  1. Welcome to Ontario Community Church, where we are encouraging, equipping, and engaging lives

  2. ! I'm Pastor Patrick Daly, and each week I balance the grace and love of Jesus Christ with the truth

  3. ! Today, you'll be hearing week seven of our sermon series through the book of Revelation.

  4. We are looking at Revelation 2, verses 18-29, which is Christ's letter to the church in Thyatira.

    Revelation 2:18–29

  5. Now, here's something that is powerful to note before you listen. Thyatira was a church that was

  6. growing in love. The text says that their latter works exceeded their first, which essentially means

  7. they were getting better, not worse. This church had demonstrated love, faith, service, and patient

  8. endurance. But Jesus also confronts this church. Some in the congregation were tolerating Jezebel,

  9. a false prophetess who was leading believers into idolatry and sexual immorality. This wasn't just

  10. a bad teaching, it was seducing people away from Christ to worship another god. The text mentions

  11. that Christ, whose eyes were like fire and feet like burnished bronze, calls the church to repent or to

  12. face judgment. What a reminder for us today. We live in a world where there is compromise everywhere,

  13. and there's this pressure to tolerate corruption and to blend in rather than to stand out. But it is

  14. Christ who searches our minds and our hearts. His eyes are like fire, and they see everything. He calls

  15. for us to stand firm in Him and to hold fast. In this sermon, you'll hear three practical applications

  16. for your life. First is to receive the light of Christ, to believe in Him, to receive His salvation,

  17. and to remain rooted in Him. The second is to resist evil and to let your lamp shine. Don't hide your

  18. light under a bushel. Let it shine. And third is to share the hope of the morning star, to help others

  19. find the light, love, and truth of Jesus Christ. And here is the beautiful imagery that runs through this

  20. entire message. We are like the lamps. We are like lamps that are shining in the night. And Jesus Christ

  21. is the morning star. We are living in this darkness of this age and letting our light shine that we

  22. received from Christ. Letting it shine in the darkness as we await for the dawn of the morning star to rise

  23. and bring forth a new eternal day. Just like when the power goes out, you need a flashlight or a candle

  24. until the sun comes up. Well, in the same way, we are carrying the light of Christ now as we await for

  25. the greater light. To the faithful who hold fast, Christ promises the morning star, Himself. He promises

  26. authority, inheritance, and to reign with Him forever. Let us refuse compromise. Let us resist evil. Let us

  27. hold fast to Christ alone. And let us await for the coming of the morning star. Let us now listen to

  28. today's message, Hold Fast to the Morning Star. Paul, good morning, everyone. Today we are continuing

  29. through our study through the book of Revelation. And we've been going through these seven churches that are

  30. found in Revelation. Let us be reminded of Christ and this imagery that we have about how He holds the seven

  31. stars and that He walks among the lampstands, showing the sense of completedness, the sense of the church, and

  32. walking among them, showing the power and the authority that Jesus Christ has. It's important for us to recognize that

  33. these churches, not only were they historical, but there are specific situations that we can learn from and that we can be

  34. mindful of. When we find it in Scripture, sometimes we wonder, well, what in the world does, how does that, what does that even

  35. look like today? And are there patterns that happen from Scripture that we can see today? Absolutely.

  36. It is just like how there are so many people in this life that are in darkness.

  37. And before, feel free to turn your Bibles to Revelation 2, chapter 2, verses 18 through 29.

  38. And I want you to, as we are turning our Bibles, I want you to get this image in your head.

  39. We've seen throughout Scripture this image of a lamp.

  40. As the children sang this song earlier, this little light of mine, I am going to let it shine.

  41. And it's a cute song. It's a historical one, one that gets you going and gets you wanting to stomp your feet as the

  42. children were doing. But it's important to realize how the symbolism and the significance of lamps are.

  43. To receive the light of Christ. To receive the fire, the flame, the oil in the lamp.

  44. And how important it is to not hide it under a bushel.

  45. Or not to hide it under a bed.

  46. But to put it out and to let it shine.

  47. And what's so powerful about that, the implication, is that lamps are placed out when it's dark.

  48. We think about that, you know, when it's dark, I need a flashlight.

  49. Or I need a lamp.

  50. But think of a moment of how there is darkness in the world.

  51. And how we are waiting for the true light, the light of Christ to come.

  52. And we'll see how that is so connected when Scripture talks about lamps and these little flames that are flickering.

  53. And how we wait for the greater light in Christ.

  54. We'll see how this is connected with this church in Thyatira.

  55. And so, are we there, church?

  56. Are we here at the church in Thyatira?

  57. It's on page 1219.

  58. Revelation chapter 2, verses 18 through 29.

    Revelation 2:18–29

  59. Church, let's read this together.

  60. And to the angel of the church in Thyatira write,

  61. The words of the Son of God, who has eyes like what?

  62. A flame of fire, and whose feet are like what?

  63. Burnished bronze.

  64. I know your works, your love, and faith, and service, and patience, endurance.

  65. And that your latter works exceed the first.

  66. But, uh-oh.

  67. I have this against you.

  68. You tolerate who?

  69. That woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess.

  70. And is teaching and doing what?

  71. Seducing my servants to practice sexual immorality,

  72. and to eat food sacrificed to idols.

  73. Isn't that interesting how we have this time to partake in communion as an act of worship?

  74. And you see in Scripture, just like in this,

  75. an act of worship to another God.

  76. Very interesting, right?

  77. Verse 21,

  78. I gave her time to repent.

  79. Does she accept?

  80. No, she refuses to repent of her sexual immorality.

  81. Behold, I will throw her onto a sickbed,

  82. and those who commit adultery with her,

  83. I will throw into great tribulation,

  84. unless they repent of her works.

  85. And I will strike her children dead,

  86. and all the churches will know that I am he who searches what?

  87. Mind and heart,

  88. and give to each of you according to your works.

  89. But to the rest of you in Thyatira,

  90. who do not hold to this teaching,

  91. who have not learned what some called the deep things of Satan,

  92. to you I say,

  93. I do not lay on you any other burden.

  94. Only hold fast what you have until I come.

  95. The one who conquers and who keeps my works until the end,

  96. to him I will give authority over what?

  97. The nations.

  98. And he will rule them with a rod of iron,

  99. as when earthen pots are broken in pieces,

  100. even as I myself have received authority from my Father.

  101. And I will give him what?

  102. The morning star.

  103. There it is.

  104. He who has an ear,

  105. let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  106. Really interesting.

  107. We have a lot of things that are going on here.

  108. Father God,

  109. we pray that as we have read the Scripture,

  110. that your Word speaks to us.

  111. We ask that it will be made abundantly clear,

  112. not only what you are going for,

  113. but what are the lessons we can learn,

  114. and how can we apply it to our very lives.

  115. We know that you are the God of simplicity,

  116. but through simplicity,

  117. there are deeper things.

  118. May we be hungry to learn more about this church in Thyatira,

  119. and how Christ is the morning star.

  120. We say together, church, amen?

  121. So, in this,

  122. let's go into what exactly is happening here, right?

  123. Well, we see first and foremost

  124. that Christ is speaking to the church in Thyatira,

  125. and this church is known for four things then.

  126. If you look back in your Bibles,

  127. or you can look on the screen as well,

  128. you see here that there are,

  129. I know your works, right?

  130. So, we see your love,

  131. your faith,

  132. your service,

  133. and patient endurance.

  134. So, there are four things

  135. that make up the works of the church in Thyatira then, right?

  136. So, that's interesting that we see, right?

  137. That Christ is introducing himself

  138. as the son of God.

  139. He's recognizing these four things.

  140. And the text is mentioning

  141. that the latter works are exceeding the first.

  142. Now, that's kind of a weird language that's going on.

  143. We have,

  144. as we went over the church in Ephesus,

  145. first and foremost,

  146. we've got to love God and to love people.

  147. That is the foundation

  148. of when we think of churches,

  149. not only back then,

  150. but churches even today.

  151. When we think of what happened back in Ephesus,

  152. they had lost that love.

  153. And what a tragedy it must be

  154. to lose the love of God

  155. and let alone the love for others.

  156. Here,

  157. love being that foundation for the church,

  158. they had grown

  159. in their ability to do good things

  160. in the name of Christ.

  161. And that's something that's very important for us

  162. is we have,

  163. we've got to love God.

  164. And we've got to love others as well.

  165. We continue to grow in the word

  166. and we should be moved to do good in his name.

  167. And so then we see in here,

  168. Christ is confronting the tolerance of Jezebel.

  169. That's kind of an interesting one, right?

  170. Now, for some of us nowadays,

  171. we may have heard a show of hands

  172. or if you're online and watching this,

  173. some of you may have heard the phrase,

  174. a Jezebel spirit.

  175. Have you heard that recently?

  176. So-and-so's got a Jezebel spirit.

  177. It's really icky, right?

  178. It's really something you,

  179. you don't want to be called that kind of thing.

  180. Well, what we're going to do

  181. is go into what exactly

  182. the significance of Jezebel

  183. and why does she reappear in Revelation?

  184. I'll tell you,

  185. when someone's calling someone a Jezebel spirit,

  186. that's usually typically tied

  187. into someone who's rebellious.

  188. It's a lot heavier of a word

  189. than people should be calling people church.

  190. That's very important for us to know.

  191. So, Christ has something against the church,

  192. their tolerance.

  193. Now, what's very interesting

  194. for those of you

  195. who are more scholarly

  196. and more academic,

  197. you have different manuscripts.

  198. Some that follow the KJV versus the ESV,

  199. it's different manuscripts

  200. of the old languages.

  201. Well, what's interesting

  202. is that some translation are saying

  203. that the tolerance of Jezebel

  204. is resulting in suffering.

  205. That's what the KJV says.

  206. And in the English standard

  207. and in a lot of modern translations,

  208. it's saying you're permitting it to happen

  209. and you're not doing anything about it.

  210. And I think it's important for us

  211. to note that there is suffering

  212. that is happening

  213. because it is falling into sin.

  214. And it's also important to note

  215. nothing is being done about this.

  216. Well, you have this woman,

  217. this prophetess,

  218. who is just doing

  219. these very wicked thing.

  220. She is false

  221. and leading believers

  222. into idolatry and immorality.

  223. And what I want to say

  224. first and foremost

  225. is how important it is.

  226. this section

  227. can be misused

  228. and misread.

  229. There are some people out there

  230. that say,

  231. well, see,

  232. this is why we don't have women

  233. in ministry.

  234. And that's inaccurate.

  235. This is a very specific situation

  236. of a woman

  237. who had power

  238. and abused that power.

  239. This is not

  240. ammunition to say,

  241. well, this is why we don't have

  242. any women in ministry.

  243. And I want to speak to that

  244. because this is one of those verses

  245. that can be misused

  246. and used in such a way

  247. to unfortunately attack

  248. women in ministry.

  249. That is very inaccurate

  250. because this is a very specific situation.

  251. Here's what I mean.

  252. Jezebel, in this sense,

  253. is leading people

  254. into sexual immorality

  255. to the point

  256. where they're worshiping another god

  257. or having them partake in meals

  258. as acts of worship.

  259. That's very different

  260. than someone

  261. who is dedicated

  262. to the Lord

  263. and leading people to Christ.

  264. Do we all understand that?

  265. That's very different.

  266. And unfortunately,

  267. what we find

  268. is something

  269. that is inaccurate

  270. or what some people

  271. would call

  272. misinformation on that.

  273. So tolerance,

  274. in this sense,

  275. is allowing someone

  276. to do wrong

  277. and it's because

  278. of their permissiveness

  279. that Christ

  280. is going to intervene

  281. in here.

  282. Christ is warning

  283. of the sickbed

  284. for Jezebel

  285. and tribulation

  286. for those who do not repent.

  287. And let us remember,

  288. when we talk about repentance,

  289. it is changing your mind, right?

  290. It's so important for that.

  291. When we're doing wrong,

  292. we've got to repent of that.

  293. We've got to change our mind

  294. in understanding

  295. why it is wrong

  296. and how can we course correct.

  297. It's just like how

  298. when you see in Scripture

  299. repent and believe,

  300. it's change your mind

  301. about Christ

  302. so that you come

  303. to believe in Him.

  304. Well, we continue

  305. to repent,

  306. seeing how God

  307. is going to mold us

  308. and make us more like Him

  309. to make us more holy

  310. and also to act upon

  311. the faith that we have

  312. in Him.

  313. And so,

  314. Christ offers mercy

  315. to all of those

  316. who repent.

  317. it's a reminder for us.

  318. Should we fall into sin,

  319. we've got to change our minds

  320. to get back on the course

  321. and to remain in Him.

  322. To remain faithful to Christ

  323. is so important for us.

  324. It goes on further,

  325. going back here,

  326. it says,

  327. to all the churches who,

  328. I am He who searches mind and heart.

  329. The language talks about

  330. knowing your inward parts.

  331. Isn't that interesting?

  332. It's very similar

  333. when we find in Scripture,

  334. before you were born,

  335. I knew you, right?

  336. The inner workings

  337. of who you are.

  338. Well,

  339. before you're born,

  340. God knows your inner workings

  341. and certainly after the fact

  342. that you're born

  343. when you're here on the earth,

  344. God knows who you are,

  345. your inner workings.

  346. So that's important as well.

  347. And so,

  348. hold fast to what I come.

  349. Verse 24,

  350. to the rest of you in Thyatira

  351. who do not hold this teaching,

  352. who have not learned,

  353. I'm not going to lay any other burden.

  354. You keep doing what you're doing.

  355. And it's important that

  356. when there's a scandal,

  357. when there is something

  358. that is happening

  359. where someone is partaking in sin

  360. or in evil

  361. or whatever it is,

  362. for us that are not partaking in it,

  363. we just remain in Christ

  364. and by golly,

  365. we keep journeying in Christ.

  366. we remain,

  367. we hold fast

  368. as the language is saying.

  369. And so,

  370. Christ is commanding

  371. to hold fast

  372. until I come.

  373. And the promise then

  374. is the morning star,

  375. which is the light of Christ.

  376. And we start to see

  377. how some of this,

  378. when I had gone over

  379. the parabolic language

  380. of the parable of the lamps,

  381. a lot of that language

  382. is finally getting tied in

  383. to what we see in Revelation.

  384. In other words,

  385. we are waiting in darkness,

  386. shining the light of Christ,

  387. waiting for the brightness

  388. of the light of Christ to come.

  389. It's fascinating

  390. how that kind of connection

  391. begins to happen

  392. within Scripture.

  393. Let's go to that next slide here.

  394. I want to show you something.

  395. When you see in Scripture

  396. this language of

  397. eyes like fire,

  398. right,

  399. and feet like burnished bronze,

  400. this is the same type of language

  401. that we see in Daniel

    Daniel 10:6

  402. chapter 10, verse 6,

  403. where the prophet Daniel

  404. is kind of seeing

  405. a heavenly figure.

  406. Some scholars say

  407. this is actually Christ

  408. that he's seeing.

  409. Some say it's an angelic being.

  410. But in any case,

  411. it's the same kind of description

  412. that is being shown

  413. in Revelation

  414. and in Daniel.

  415. And it's fascinating

  416. when we see that kind of thing,

  417. right?

  418. Now, obviously,

  419. in Daniel,

  420. he's talking about

  421. the arms and the legs

  422. compared to the feet,

  423. right?

  424. Obviously,

  425. different parts of the body,

  426. but still kind of

  427. the same idea with this.

  428. And that's really fascinating

  429. when we see that.

  430. We can go to the next slide here.

  431. And what's important for us

  432. is that

  433. what are the things

  434. we can learn

  435. from this?

  436. It's very interesting

  437. to see, like,

  438. okay, you have Jezebel,

  439. you have all these things

  440. that are going on

  441. and remaining firm.

  442. Well, the first thing here

  443. is recognizing

  444. that Christ refines

  445. and searches our hearts,

  446. right?

  447. As it mentions

  448. in Hebrews 4, verse 13,

    Hebrews 4:13

  449. that no creature

  450. is hidden from his sight.

  451. I always love,

  452. you guys remember

  453. the story of the garden

  454. where God's saying,

  455. where are you, Adam?

  456. I always love that.

  457. It's like as though

  458. God doesn't actually know

  459. where Adam is, right?

  460. He's calling for him

  461. to come and out of hiding,

  462. hey, let's deal

  463. with this kind of thing, right?

  464. And so I've always found

  465. God having a sense

  466. of humor in Scripture,

  467. especially what you find

  468. back in Genesis here, right?

  469. And that it's important

  470. for us to know

  471. Christ knows our intention, right?

  472. When we think of the things

  473. that we think of,

  474. that's why it's so important

  475. for us to think about

  476. what we think about.

  477. What are you filling

  478. your mind with, right?

  479. When we talk about the heart,

  480. what is your intention

  481. for God and for other people?

  482. And so it's important for us

  483. that not only do we seek out Christ,

  484. but we have the Lord refine us, right?

  485. That's the same kind of language

  486. of transformation

  487. or becoming sanctified, right?

  488. The language of being more holy

  489. and becoming like him.

  490. And ask yourself the question then,

  491. how is Christ purifying

  492. your life right now?

  493. Or is he?

  494. If not, perhaps it's a call for you

  495. to ask the Lord

  496. to search your heart and your mind

  497. and to continue to mold you.

  498. Because I find that as a Christian,

  499. as I have grown in my faith,

  500. I hope you can say this as well.

  501. It's wonderful to see

  502. how God changes you

  503. and then you look back

  504. at who you were.

  505. Not even a year ago

  506. or even a few months ago.

  507. You see how God is working in you,

  508. continuing to transform you.

  509. The second thing then

  510. is Jezebel shows a pattern

  511. of abused power.

  512. Now, we'll go into that.

  513. You know, let's go to that

  514. next slide, actually.

  515. I want to show you some examples

  516. of what exactly Jezebel is doing here.

  517. Now, throughout 1 and 2 Kings,

  518. we see this constant battle between,

  519. I mean, we see throughout

  520. through all Scripture,

  521. the battle between good and evil, right?

  522. That's why we trust in the living God.

  523. We trust in Jesus Christ

  524. because he's victorious.

  525. But here you're seeing Jezebel,

  526. who she went and served Baal

  527. and worshipped him, right?

  528. Someone that is serving another God

  529. and to the point where

  530. I am going to go against

  531. the people of God.

  532. That's important for us to understand.

  533. Not only did she worship another God,

  534. but she was waging war

  535. against the people of God.

  536. That is the pattern

  537. that you see not only

  538. in 1 and 2 Kings

  539. throughout Scripture,

  540. but also what is happening

  541. in Revelation 2 here.

  542. Now, do we know

  543. if they are giving the title

  544. Jezebel to this prophetess?

  545. Some argue that.

  546. Some are saying

  547. it's someone who has that same name.

  548. Never name your child Jezebel.

  549. Can we not do that, right?

  550. You don't want to live up

  551. to that name, okay?

  552. So, in any case,

  553. it could have been

  554. someone literally named Jezebel

  555. or it could have been

  556. we're just going to give you the title

  557. because it's just like

  558. what happened in the past.

  559. There is some debate on that.

  560. But in any case,

  561. you see in this other verse

  562. with the green here,

  563. there was none

  564. who's referencing King Ahab

  565. who sold himself to do

  566. what was evil

  567. in the sight of the Lord,

  568. whom Jezebel,

  569. his wife incited.

  570. Right?

  571. So, we're talking about influence.

  572. We're talking about

  573. this sense of

  574. I'm going to make

  575. people turn against the Lord

  576. and do evil in his sight.

  577. So, when we see that

  578. in the Old Testament,

  579. we can actually have

  580. an understanding of what,

  581. a better understanding

  582. of what's happening here.

  583. In other words,

  584. Jezebel in the Old Testament

  585. and this Jezebel in Revelation

  586. is using their power

  587. and their influence

  588. to turn people away from God

  589. to sexual immorality,

  590. offering their bodies

  591. to another God

  592. and partaking in these meals.

  593. That's a very specific thing.

  594. And so, when you hear someone say

  595. they've got a Jezebel spirit,

  596. that's a very heavy title

  597. and I don't think that should be

  598. loosely just thrown out at people.

  599. This is a very specific thing

  600. that happens

  601. that Christ is against

  602. in this case.

  603. And so, I show that to you

  604. just as how important for it,

  605. for us to understand

  606. who is Jezebel?

  607. What did she do?

  608. And why is it here

  609. in Revelation again?

  610. Let's go back to the interpretation

  611. that previous slide here.

  612. Right?

  613. It's a pattern of abused power.

  614. We have to think for us,

  615. if you want to bring it home,

  616. is how you influence people.

  617. Some of us are in positions of power.

  618. Some of us have positions

  619. where we can influence people.

  620. We have to consider

  621. what God has given to us, right?

  622. Time, talent, treasure, testimony,

  623. but also how we influence people.

  624. You would be absolutely amazed

  625. at how you can lead people to Christ

  626. or lead people away from them.

  627. Now, I don't know about you.

  628. I don't know any Jezebels.

  629. And if you do,

  630. pray for them.

  631. Pray that God will intervene

  632. in their life

  633. and that they may repent.

  634. Just as Christ was offering

  635. Jezebel to repent.

  636. I pray that we don't have any of those,

  637. but I would be foolish to say

  638. it's never going to happen again.

  639. It is in those cases

  640. that we stand firm

  641. and we don't fall into

  642. that type of seduction

  643. or that temptation as it were.

  644. And so,

  645. use your power,

  646. your influence for good.

  647. Right?

  648. This is the same pattern.

  649. We also think of the responsibilities

  650. of pastors and shepherds,

  651. that we are to lead people

  652. to Christ

  653. and to offer ourselves,

  654. our bodies, as it were,

  655. to the Lord.

  656. Not in sexual immorality,

  657. but in purity.

  658. We don't send people into darkness.

  659. We send people to light.

  660. That is important for us.

  661. And this whole thing about meals

  662. and partaking in that,

  663. let us just remember

  664. when we partake in communion together,

  665. we worship the living God

  666. and we say thank you

  667. and we reflect on that.

  668. Let us,

  669. and I hope none of us

  670. ever partake in a meal like that

  671. as an act of worship to another God.

  672. It's very clear in Scripture

  673. to not do that.

  674. The third thing then that shows up

  675. is that Christ is our hope,

  676. the morning star,

  677. that there is a reward

  678. for remaining in Christ

  679. even in the presence of evil.

  680. We think of how things

  681. are going on today

  682. with, well, things globally,

  683. things that are going on in Sudan

  684. and the terrible things

  685. that are happening there.

  686. We think of things that are going,

  687. I mean, we can go on and on

  688. about just all of the tragedies,

  689. the war,

  690. all of these things

  691. that are happening.

  692. In the face of evil,

  693. we stand firm,

  694. trusting in Christ,

  695. the living hope.

  696. you can't take away

  697. the love that God has for us.

  698. You can't.

  699. And no matter what

  700. politician, government,

  701. regime ever happens,

  702. we believe in the King of Kings

  703. and the Lord of Lords,

  704. whose power is far greater

  705. than any human being.

  706. And so,

  707. in this,

  708. Christ,

  709. as the morning star,

  710. will share in the inheritance

  711. and his authority

  712. to reign with him forever

  713. in the new heaven

  714. and in the new earth.

  715. And so,

  716. as I gave you this imagery

  717. about the lamp

  718. that shines in the darkness,

  719. Christ being the morning star,

  720. we await for the day to break.

  721. Just as scripture says,

  722. joy comes in the morning.

  723. And so,

  724. ask yourself,

  725. are you living your life

  726. settling into the night?

  727. Or are you living your life

  728. in anticipation

  729. for the light to come?

  730. I know we're getting,

  731. I'm getting a little far here.

  732. Let's keep going.

  733. Let's go to our application then.

  734. So,

  735. how should we respond?

  736. How do we live this out?

  737. Well,

  738. the first thing,

  739. the first most important thing

  740. is to receive the light of Christ.

  741. We've got to believe in Jesus Christ

  742. and receive his salvation

  743. and we remain rooted in Christ.

  744. We have him as our firm foundation.

  745. That is the ultimate decision.

  746. That is the greatest decision.

  747. Right?

  748. Receive salvation.

  749. Receive the light of Christ.

  750. Receive and to remain in him.

  751. Never be afraid

  752. to go to the Lord.

  753. Never be afraid to seek him

  754. and to ask him to search you.

  755. Consider the words of the Psalms.

  756. I love it.

  757. Psalm 139

  758. where it says,

  759. Search me, O God,

  760. and make me true.

  761. Ask God.

  762. Now,

  763. don't only ask God for salvation,

  764. but ask him

  765. to be more like him.

  766. Because God will mold us

  767. in some incredible ways.

  768. Love,

  769. patience,

  770. joy,

  771. the peace that surpasses

  772. all understanding.

  773. I mean,

  774. we can go on and on

  775. about all of the wonderful things

  776. that God gives to us.

  777. And even when we have

  778. this language of receiving

  779. the morning star

  780. or the white stone,

  781. all of these things

  782. is showing the gifts

  783. that the Lord has for us.

  784. Ask yourself

  785. if you have received salvation,

  786. if you have that light of Christ.

  787. The second thing then

  788. is to what, church?

  789. Resist evil.

  790. Right?

  791. And let your lamp shine.

  792. Right?

  793. And we can see

  794. how this gets connected, right?

  795. We don't hide our lamp

  796. under a bushel.

  797. We don't hide it under a bed.

  798. As we journey in faith,

  799. we will face pressures

  800. from the world.

  801. It can be at work.

  802. It can be people

  803. that are against your faith.

  804. It can be people

  805. that say,

  806. you know what?

  807. You used to be

  808. this kind of person.

  809. Why aren't you

  810. that person anymore?

  811. Could be those kind of things.

  812. In any case,

  813. we stay the course

  814. and we resist evil.

  815. That's where we use

  816. the language

  817. of standing firm,

  818. remaining rooted.

  819. Right?

  820. Because we have that

  821. solid rock in Christ

  822. which we can build

  823. our house upon.

  824. Very important.

  825. And this is just like how

  826. when we recite

  827. or when we pray

  828. the Lord's Prayer,

  829. lead us not

  830. into temptation

  831. but deliver us

  832. from evil.

  833. It's wonderful

  834. how things are

  835. connected as this.

  836. Are you being asked

  837. to partake in evil?

  838. That's a question

  839. that you can reflect on.

  840. And in those moments,

  841. may you resist evil.

  842. May you stand firm.

  843. May you navigate

  844. or maybe even help someone

  845. resist evil

  846. in their life.

  847. It's very important.

  848. And then finally,

  849. share the hope

  850. of the morning star.

  851. I want to turn there.

  852. We'll have a little bit

  853. of time here.

  854. I want to show you

  855. something that I think

  856. is very interesting

  857. throughout Scripture

  858. in here.

  859. In Genesis,

  860. we all know

  861. that in the beginning

  862. God created the heavens

  863. and the earth

  864. and the earth

  865. was out

  866. with formless

  867. and void.

  868. There was darkness

  869. that was over it.

  870. And then God said,

  871. let there be light.

  872. The implication

  873. is that

  874. it's actually

  875. a mini creation story

  876. within the creation story.

  877. The world being

  878. in darkness

  879. and the light

  880. of Christ

  881. coming

  882. and breaking

  883. through.

  884. How powerful

  885. is that?

  886. Just as how

  887. Jesus says,

  888. I am the light

  889. of the world.

  890. Whoever follows me

  891. will have the light

  892. of life

  893. just like how

  894. Christ is saying,

  895. I will give him

  896. the morning star.

  897. And then as we're

  898. going in Revelation

  899. to the one

  900. who conquers,

  901. I will give

  902. the morning star.

  903. We can see.

  904. And if you need

  905. it even more clear,

  906. Jesus identifies

  907. himself as

  908. I am

  909. the bright

  910. morning star.

  911. What beautiful

  912. connections here,

  913. church.

  914. stars and light

  915. shining in the

  916. darkness.

  917. I want you to

  918. think as we

  919. close here.

  920. Today,

  921. we live

  922. in darkness

  923. as though

  924. the night

  925. is here

  926. and we hold

  927. our lamps

  928. in anticipation

  929. and waiting

  930. for Christ

  931. to come.

  932. We await

  933. the light

  934. of the morning

  935. star and

  936. we await

  937. for God

  938. to say,

  939. let there

  940. be light

  941. and there

  942. will be

  943. light.

  944. So powerful.

  945. And there's

  946. always an end

  947. to every storm.

  948. There's light

  949. at the end

  950. of darkness

  951. and there's

  952. morning

  953. after the

  954. night.

  955. And that is

  956. why

  957. we shine

  958. our lamps

  959. brightly.

  960. We wait

  961. for the greater

  962. light to come.

  963. Think about it.

  964. when you're

  965. in a dark

  966. room,

  967. let's say

  968. the power

  969. is out.

  970. You've got

  971. a little

  972. lighter,

  973. right?

  974. Or a candle.

  975. There's only

  976. so much light

  977. that is

  978. illuminating

  979. in the room.

  980. But my

  981. gosh,

  982. when the

  983. sun is

  984. out,

  985. I can

  986. see everything,

  987. right?

  988. And we

  989. think of

  990. that when

  991. it comes

  992. to Christ.

  993. That his

  994. light is

  995. unlike any

  996. other light.

  997. And this

  998. is why we

  999. share in the

  1000. gospel message,

  1001. right?

  1002. It's that.

  1003. Let's go

  1004. back to

  1005. the application.

  1006. That's why

  1007. we share

  1008. the hope

  1009. of the

  1010. morning star.

  1011. Because there's

  1012. so many

  1013. people that

  1014. don't have

  1015. that light.

  1016. They're not

  1017. holding a

  1018. lamp yet.

  1019. A lamp

  1020. that's lit.

  1021. Well,

  1022. think about

  1023. it.

  1024. If the

  1025. power goes

  1026. out and

  1027. it's dark

  1028. and you've

  1029. got the

  1030. lamp and

  1031. your friend

  1032. doesn't,

  1033. hey,

  1034. buddy,

  1035. you've

  1036. got to

  1037. have a

  1038. lamp

  1039. here.

  1040. We've

  1041. got to

  1042. find you

  1043. one.

  1044. Let's

  1045. get you

  1046. some

  1047. light.

  1048. Let's

  1049. get you

  1050. a candle

  1051. kind of

  1052. thing.

  1053. That is

  1054. the kind

  1055. of

  1056. imagery

  1057. we

  1058. think

  1059. of

  1060. when

  1061. we

  1062. share

  1063. the

  1064. gospel

  1065. so

  1066. that

  1067. they

  1068. too

  1069. can

  1070. have

  1071. the

  1072. light

  1073. and

  1074. that

  1075. they

  1076. too

  1077. can

  1078. wait

  1079. for the

  1080. greater

  1081. light

  1082. to

  1083. come.

  1084. We

  1085. tell the

  1086. world

  1087. of the

  1088. hope

  1089. of

  1090. Jesus

  1091. and

  1092. we

  1093. speak

  1094. of

  1095. how

  1096. God

  1097. has

  1098. worked

  1099. in

  1100. our

  1101. life.

  1102. Think

  1103. of

  1104. that

  1105. imagery.

  1106. Hey,

  1107. I'm

  1108. holding

  1109. a lamp

  1110. here and

  1111. it's

  1112. shining.

  1113. Do you

  1114. want to

  1115. see where

  1116. you're

  1117. going?

  1118. Let's

  1119. get you

  1120. a lamp.

  1121. Go

  1122. to the

  1123. light.

  1124. See how

  1125. simple

  1126. God is

  1127. when we're

  1128. thinking of

  1129. this kind

  1130. of

  1131. language?

  1132. We can

  1133. think

  1134. literally

  1135. like,

  1136. hey,

  1137. bud,

  1138. you're

  1139. in the

  1140. darkness.

  1141. I've

  1142. got to

  1143. get you

  1144. a

  1145. flashlight,

  1146. right?

  1147. But we

  1148. think in

  1149. the

  1150. spiritual

  1151. sense

  1152. how

  1153. powerful

  1154. that

  1155. is.

  1156. We

  1157. speak

  1158. of

  1159. his

  1160. promises

  1161. and we

  1162. have to

  1163. think,

  1164. church,

  1165. of how

  1166. important it

  1167. is for

  1168. the world

  1169. to know

  1170. of Jesus

  1171. Christ more

  1172. than ever

  1173. before.

  1174. Because there's

  1175. still a lot

  1176. of darkness

  1177. as we

  1178. wait for

  1179. the light

  1180. to come.

  1181. People need

  1182. to know

  1183. that there

  1184. is more

  1185. to the

  1186. confusion,

  1187. the darkness,

  1188. the sin,

  1189. and the

  1190. evil that

  1191. exists in

  1192. the world

  1193. today.

  1194. It does

  1195. not,

  1196. the existence

  1197. of evil

  1198. does not

  1199. change our

  1200. call.

  1201. We share

  1202. in the

  1203. hope of

  1204. Jesus

  1205. Christ for

  1206. others.

  1207. We share

  1208. the gospel,

  1209. we grow

  1210. as we've

  1211. received

  1212. salvation

  1213. and we

  1214. do good

  1215. in the

  1216. name of

  1217. Christ.

  1218. And I

  1219. want you

  1220. to think

  1221. as we

  1222. close,

  1223. who can

  1224. you share

  1225. the light

  1226. of Christ?

  1227. Ask

  1228. yourself that.

  1229. Think of

  1230. someone that

  1231. you can

  1232. share in

  1233. the gospel

  1234. message with

  1235. this week,

  1236. the next

  1237. person that

  1238. you know,

  1239. a friend,

  1240. a family,

  1241. a co-worker,

  1242. a student,

  1243. whatever.

  1244. Think of

  1245. that.

  1246. In closing,

  1247. let us

  1248. think of

  1249. this

  1250. beautiful

  1251. imagery

  1252. of Christ

  1253. being the

  1254. morning star.

  1255. We are

  1256. in this

  1257. darkness

  1258. shining,

  1259. holding these

  1260. lamps together

  1261. as we

  1262. wait for

  1263. the dawn.

  1264. Let's

  1265. pray together.

  1266. Father God,

  1267. we thank

  1268. you for

  1269. this time,

  1270. this opportunity

  1271. for us to

  1272. go over

  1273. this wonderful

  1274. church in

  1275. Thyatira.

  1276. We just

  1277. pray,

  1278. first and

  1279. foremost,

  1280. that we

  1281. recognize that

  1282. your Son,

  1283. Jesus Christ,

  1284. is the

  1285. Son of

  1286. God and

  1287. He is the

  1288. fulfillment

  1289. of prophecy.

  1290. We pray,

  1291. Father,

  1292. that lives

  1293. are transformed.

  1294. We pray

  1295. that if

  1296. anyone has

  1297. not made

  1298. a decision

  1299. for Christ,

  1300. they believe

  1301. in the

  1302. death,

  1303. burial,

  1304. and resurrection

  1305. of your

  1306. Son,

  1307. Jesus Christ.

  1308. We pray

  1309. that individually

  1310. and collectively

  1311. as a church,

  1312. we may grow

  1313. in the

  1314. deeper things

  1315. of God

  1316. and not in

  1317. the deep

  1318. things of

  1319. Satan,

  1320. as the

  1321. Scripture mentions.

  1322. we pray

  1323. that we

  1324. can have

  1325. the ability

  1326. to discern

  1327. right from

  1328. wrong,

  1329. truth from

  1330. lies,

  1331. good from

  1332. evil,

  1333. and that we

  1334. can stand

  1335. firm and

  1336. hold fast

  1337. in our

  1338. faith so

  1339. that should

  1340. there be

  1341. a Jezebel,

  1342. or should

  1343. there be a

  1344. synagogue of

  1345. Satan,

  1346. or should

  1347. there be

  1348. Satan's

  1349. throne,

  1350. that we

  1351. can resist

  1352. that.

  1353. That we

  1354. can stand

  1355. firm and

  1356. we continue

  1357. on the

  1358. journey that

  1359. exists in

  1360. you,

  1361. just as

  1362. you have

  1363. shown us

  1364. that Christ

  1365. is the

  1366. shepherd leading

  1367. us to

  1368. green pastures.

  1369. We are

  1370. awaiting,

  1371. and may

  1372. we wait

  1373. upon you,

  1374. for we

  1375. are like

  1376. holding those

  1377. lamps,

  1378. waiting for

  1379. the light of

  1380. Christ,

  1381. the morning

  1382. star to

  1383. come.

  1384. I pray,

  1385. Father,

  1386. that as we

  1387. close our

  1388. time today,

  1389. that this

  1390. imagery of

  1391. standing firm,

  1392. this imagery

  1393. of lamps

  1394. shining in

  1395. the darkness

  1396. waiting for

  1397. the dawn

  1398. will resound

  1399. with us,

  1400. that we

  1401. will remember

  1402. it and

  1403. take it to

  1404. heart,

  1405. and that we

  1406. may share

  1407. in the gospel

  1408. message,

  1409. share in the

  1410. words of our

  1411. testimonies,

  1412. and live and

  1413. love like

  1414. you.

  1415. It is in

  1416. the name of

  1417. Jesus Christ,

  1418. the morning

  1419. star,

  1420. that we pray,

  1421. and we all

  1422. say together,

  1423. amen,

  1424. church?

  1425. Amen.

  1426. Thank you for

  1427. tuning in to

  1428. Ontario Community

  1429. Church.

  1430. If this message

  1431. encouraged you,

  1432. I encourage for

  1433. you to share it

  1434. with a friend

  1435. or a family

  1436. member.

  1437. Maybe you know

  1438. someone who is

  1439. struggling with

  1440. compromise,

  1441. or maybe you

  1442. know someone who

  1443. just needs to

  1444. hear about the

  1445. hope that we

  1446. have in Christ.

  1447. Remind them that

  1448. Christ knows

  1449. their heart,

  1450. Christ understands

  1451. their circumstance,

  1452. and he calls for

  1453. each and every one

  1454. of us to come

  1455. to him,

  1456. to remain in

  1457. him,

  1458. and to hold

  1459. fast until he

  1460. returns as the

  1461. bright morning

  1462. star.

  1463. Let us receive

  1464. his light.

  1465. Let us resist

  1466. evil with the

  1467. power of the

  1468. Holy Spirit.

  1469. Let us share in

  1470. the gospel with

  1471. others who are

  1472. still in the

  1473. darkness.

  1474. In today's

  1475. sermon, we

  1476. learned that we

  1477. are like lamps,

  1478. shining in the

  1479. night, awaiting

  1480. the morning

  1481. star.

  1482. And just as a

  1483. lamp helps us to

  1484. see in the

  1485. darkness, we

  1486. carry the light

  1487. of Jesus Christ

  1488. today.

  1489. We await the

  1490. full dawn of

  1491. when Christ

  1492. returns as the

  1493. morning star to

  1494. bring eternal

  1495. light.

  1496. That is our

  1497. hope, that is

  1498. our future, and

  1499. that is what we

  1500. hold fast to.

  1501. Think about this.

  1502. If the power goes

  1503. out and you have

  1504. that flashlight, but

  1505. your friend doesn't,

  1506. you would obviously

  1507. help them find a

  1508. flashlight to or

  1509. shine the light

  1510. upon them.

  1511. That is what

  1512. sharing the gospel

  1513. is like.

  1514. We have the

  1515. light of Christ.

  1516. Let us help

  1517. others find the

  1518. light of Christ so

  1519. they too can wait

  1520. for the greater

  1521. light to come.

  1522. You're welcome to

  1526. information about

  1527. our church, how to

  1528. connect with us, or

  1529. how you can get

  1530. involved.

  1531. Just visit our

  1532. website.

  1533. Next week, we

  1534. will continue in our

  1535. sermon series through

  1536. the book of

  1537. Revelation with the

  1538. Church in Sardis,

  1539. found in Revelation

    Revelation 3:1–6

  1540. chapter 3, verses 1

  1541. to 6.

1542. We will be looking at

  1543. Christ's message to a

  1544. church that has a

  1545. reputation for being

  1546. alive, but is

  1547. actually dead.

  1548. And what does it

1549. mean to wake up, to

  1550. strengthen what remains,

  1551. and to remember what

  1552. we have received?

1553. Grace and peace to you

  1554. in our Lord Jesus

  1555. Christ.

  1556. May you receive the

  1557. light of Christ.

  1558. May you resist evil

  1559. and let your lamp

  1560. shine brightly.

1561. May you share in the

  1562. hope of the morning

  1563. star with others, and

  1564. may Christ search your

  1565. heart and refine you,

  1566. making you more like

  1567. him.

1568. May you hold fast and

1569. wait with joy for the

  1570. dawn when Jesus Christ,

  1571. that morning star,

  1572. returns.

  1573. He searches your heart

  1574. and he knows your

  1575. circumstance.

1576. May you turn to him,

1577. and may you come to

  1578. know Jesus, the way,

1579. the truth, and the life.

  1580. God bless you.

  1581. God bless you.

  1582. God bless you.
