  1. Welcome to Ontario Community Church, where we are encouraging, equipping, and engaging lives for Christ.

  2. ! I'm Pastor Patrick Daly, and you're listening to week two of our Advent series for 2025.

  3. Before we jump into today's message, I want to give you a little context.

  4. Last week, we kicked off Advent with Revelation 21, exploring God's promise to make all things new.

  5. We talked about hope, hope that isn't just wishful thinking, but a confident expectation that God is restoring what has been broken.

  6. Today, we're continuing that theme, but we're shifting from hope to peace.

  7. And I've got to tell you, this passage that is found in Revelation 22 is remarkable.

  8. John receives this vision of a river, the river of the water of life, that is bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb.

  9. And beside that river stands the tree of life, bringing healing to the nations.

  10. What I want you to listen for as you hear this message is how peace flows.

  11. It is not static. It is not something that we manufacture.

  12. Peace flows from God's throne, through Christ, into our chaos, and then through us to others.

  13. We're also going to connect this vision to the entire biblical story,

  14. from Genesis, where the world begins with chaos over the deep,

  15. to Jesus standing in the boat saying,

  16. Peace, be still.

  17. And then finally, to this final vision in Revelation, where the sea of chaos is no more.

  18. It is all connected, and it's beautiful.

  19. One more thing before we start.

  20. My wife Amber created these incredible Advent devotionals that go along with each week's sermon.

  21. Week two focuses on peace, and it includes daily reflections, art, contemplation, and even practical ways to be a peacemaker in your community.

  22. You can download it for free on our website at OntarioCommunityChurch.org.

  23. So let's settle in.

  24. Let's dive into this message together.

  25. Here is Peace That Flows, From Chaos to New Creation.

  26. All right.

  27. Well, good morning, everyone.

  28. What a special time it is for us to partake of communion, the bread and the cup.

  29. I think it's been so common for us to get so used to when COVID-19 was around, going into the little packets of everything,

  30. and how beautiful it is for us to be able to have bread and for us to share in the cup together,

  31. a time of remembrance and a time of reflection on the hope that is found in Christ,

  32. the peace that surpasses all understanding.

  33. We think of all of this and this love that the Lord has for us in sending his son down to change the course of history.

  34. We think of how there is a peace that flows like a river.

  35. And I gave you this idea, this notion of a river from the chaotic sea

  36. into when Christ enters the scene saying,

  37. Peace, be still.

  38. We think of Advent.

  39. We think of this time of reflection,

  40. this time where things slow down

  41. in our busy lives.

  42. I don't know about you, but

  43. how many of you go to see Christmas lights?

  44. I went into,

  45. my family and I went into Eagle,

  46. and there's this really famous

  47. light show that they have.

  48. And

  49. when you film it,

  50. you take pictures of it,

  51. the amount of lights and decorations that are on there,

  52. it's about as much as you'd get on a street and packed into one house.

  53. And the funny part is,

  54. the neighbor next door has lights that say,

  55. I give up.

  56. You can't compete with this guy.

  57. But we think about it.

  58. We think of the,

  59. this time,

  60. we think of slowing down.

  61. Right?

  62. Where the sun's not out as much.

  63. And it gets darker earlier,

  64. and a lot of us just want to

  65. cuddle up with a blanket

  66. and some hot chocolate,

  67. or whatever it may be.

  68. We think about it,

  69. I have put on here,

  70. tying in our Revelation series

  71. with Advent.

  72. What a peculiar thing to do.

  73. And I actually want us to turn

  74. to Revelation.

  75. Revelation.

  76. And you'll see

  77. in here

  78. the connection.

  79. Revelation 22,

    Revelation 22:1–5

  80. verses 1 through 5.

  81. We will see in here

  82. something

  83. really remarkable.

  84. That's good.

  85. It's going to be on page

  86. 1,234

  87. in your ESV Pew Bible.

  88. Revelation 22,

    Revelation 22:1–5

  89. verses 1 through 5.

  90. Let's read it together, church.

  91. Ready?

  92. Then the angel

  93. showed me the river

  94. of the water of life,

  95. bright as crystal,

  96. flowing from the throne of God

  97. and of the Lamb,

  98. through the middle

  99. of the street

  100. of the city,

  101. also on either side

  102. of the river,

  103. the tree of life

  104. with its twelve kinds

  105. of fruit,

  106. yielding its fruit

  107. each month.

  108. The leaves of the tree

  109. were for what?

  110. Healing of the nations.

  111. No longer will there

  112. be anything accursed,

  113. but the throne of God

  114. and of the Lamb

  115. will be in it,

  116. and his servants

  117. will worship him.

  118. They will see his face,

  119. and his name

  120. will be on their foreheads,

  121. and night will be

  122. no more.

  123. They will need

  124. no lamp,

  125. light of lamp,

  126. or sun,

  127. for the God

  128. will be their light,

  129. and they will reign

  130. forever and ever.

  131. We think about this

  132. and this notion

  133. of the water of life,

  134. right?

  135. Something that is bright

  136. as crystal.

  137. And I don't know

  138. about you,

  139. how many of you

  140. have gone to a river

  141. and you know

  142. how peaceful

  143. it can be,

  144. right?

  145. And then,

  146. you might go further

  147. down that river

  148. and you see how chaotic

  149. it can be

  150. with all the rocks

  151. and all the things

  152. going on,

  153. right?

  154. And we can see

  155. this real-life imagery

  156. of water.

  157. The strength

  158. and the power

  159. of water.

  160. We think of storms,

  161. hurricanes,

  162. we think of all

  163. of the forces

  164. of nature

  165. and then how peace

  166. and calm

  167. it can be.

  168. This description

  169. then, right,

  170. is the water of life,

  171. there's the tree of life

  172. and the healing

  173. of the nations,

  174. and what's beautiful

  175. about this language

  176. is the Lord God

  177. will be their light.

  178. So it's how it's all

  179. tied into here.

  180. Let us think

  181. for a moment

  182. about how this

  183. is tied in

  184. with our very typical

  185. Advent verses

  186. from Isaiah,

  187. right?

  188. The shoot

  189. from the stump

  190. of Jesse

  191. and the spirit

  192. resting upon him,

  193. right?

  194. We think about that

  195. and how he judges

  196. with righteousness

  197. and defends the poor

  198. and the language

  199. of the wolf

  200. and the lamb

  201. dwelling together.

  202. Things that were

  203. prophesied

  204. that get fulfilled

  205. within Revelation.

  206. And it's wonderful

  207. imagery

  208. to show

  209. the consistency

  210. of our God

  211. and that he

  212. does not fail.

  213. Everlasting

  214. to everlasting,

  215. our God

  216. remains the same.

  217. and he calls

  218. for each of us

  219. into not only

  220. that hope

  221. but also

  222. that peace

  223. as well.

  224. We think of how

  225. in our scripture

  226. reading

  227. there was the verse

  228. of Romans 15

  229. talking about

  230. welcoming one another

  231. just as Christ

  232. has welcomed you.

  233. We think of how

  234. important it is

  235. just as Christ

  236. gives us

  237. peace

  238. that surpasses

  239. all understanding.

  240. We need to

  241. exhibit that peace

  242. to other people.

  243. Let God

  244. work in and

  245. through our lives

  246. and transform us.

  247. We have to think

  248. how important it is

  249. not only to come

  250. and know Jesus Christ

  251. and to have that

  252. relationship with him

  253. but to let it expand.

  254. Let God

  255. be your foundation

  256. and build your house

  257. upon that foundation.

  258. And just as God

  259. has given you peace

  260. may you give peace

  261. to other people.

  262. It's so very important

  263. and even when we think

  264. of John the Baptist

  265. in Matthew chapter 3

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  266. preparing the way

  267. of the Lord.

  268. Preparing for

  269. the peace

  270. that surpasses

  271. all understanding.

  272. Right?

  273. So we see

  274. the river

  275. of the water of life

  276. flowing from

  277. the throne of God

  278. the tree of life

  279. standing on both sides

  280. bearing fruit

  281. each month.

  282. It's kind of interesting

  283. right?

  284. Each month you're going

  285. to have some new fruits

  286. and the leaves

  287. are bringing healing

  288. to the nations.

  289. What beautiful imagery.

  290. Beautiful description

  291. of what the new heaven

  292. and the new earth

  293. will be like.

  294. You know

  295. as a dad

  296. sometimes

  297. I'm imperfect.

  298. I am imperfect.

  299. We're all imperfect.

  300. Sometimes children

  301. can be very frustrating.

  302. Amen?

  303. When I read this

  304. no more curse

  305. no more darkness

  306. right?

  307. I think

  308. oh there will be

  309. no more weeping

  310. right?

  311. Just as children

  312. get worked up

  313. at times

  314. throwing tantrums

  315. right?

  316. We can think of that

  317. for children

  318. but we can also

  319. expand that

  320. into our own

  321. adult life.

  322. Pain

  323. suffering

  324. no more sin

  325. restoration.

  326. you want it

  327. to bring home

  328. and to hit home

  329. think of the

  330. imperfection

  331. that exists

  332. on the earth

  333. today.

  334. Imagine waking

  335. up one day

  336. and there's

  337. no bad news.

  338. What a day

  339. that would be

  340. right?

  341. Imagine for a

  342. moment where

  343. there's no more

  344. darkness

  345. or there's no

  346. more curse.

  347. We think of

  348. the fallen

  349. nature

  350. right?

  351. How so many

  352. of us are in

  353. darkness

  354. and entering

  355. into light

  356. but let's

  357. think about

  358. us dwelling

  359. with the

  360. Lord forever

  361. and what that

  362. will be like.

  363. It's actually

  364. very hard

  365. for us to

  366. fathom

  367. because we

  368. get so used

  369. to brokenness.

  370. We get so

  371. used to

  372. darkness.

  373. We get so

  374. used to

  375. people who

  376. live in

  377. sin.

  378. We get used

  379. to hearing

  380. about evil

  381. and what

  382. evil does.

  383. When you go

  384. through the

  385. Psalms,

  386. for example,

  387. a common

  388. theme that you

  389. see throughout

  390. Scripture,

  391. particularly in

  392. the Psalms,

  393. is it seems

  394. like the

  395. wicked are

  396. doing well.

  397. And why

  398. is that,

  399. right?

  400. Well, the

  401. thing is, it

  402. may appear

  403. that they're

  404. doing well,

  405. but God

  406. has the

  407. final say.

  408. And we

  409. have to keep

  410. that in mind

  411. and how

  412. everything is

  413. connected.

  414. I want to go

  415. to this next

  416. slide.

  417. That should

  418. be the

  419. image on

  420. here.

  421. And we

  422. have, I

  423. put this

  424. image together

  425. of Christ

  426. as the

  427. Prince of

  428. Peace.

  429. Now, for

  430. many of

  431. you, you

  432. know, when

  433. we talk about

  434. controversy,

  435. there's debate

  436. on how old

  437. and how long

  438. did it take

  439. for the

  440. universe to

  441. be made.

  442. I don't

  443. want to go

  444. there.

  445. I do want

  446. to go into

  447. Genesis.

  448. If you want

  449. to turn there,

  450. you're welcome

  451. to.

  452. If not,

  453. that's okay

  454. too.

  455. Because there's

  456. something that

  457. a lot of

  458. people miss

  459. in Genesis,

  460. where it

  461. says, in

  462. the beginning,

  463. some of you

  464. can quote it

  465. verbatim,

  466. right?

  467. God created

  468. the heavens

  469. and what?

  470. And the

  471. earth, right?

  472. Verse 2,

  473. the earth

  474. was without

  475. form and

  476. void, and

  477. darkness was

  478. over the

  479. face of

  480. the what?

  481. Of the

  482. deep, right?

  483. And the

  484. Spirit of

  485. God was

  486. hovering over

  487. the face

  488. of the

  489. waters.

  490. An

  491. imagery

  492. of

  493. darkness,

  494. an

  495. imagery of

  496. the earth

  497. without

  498. form.

  499. It's

  500. talking about

  501. this sense

  502. of a

  503. void that

  504. is existing.

  505. So

  506. interesting

  507. that then

  508. you have

  509. the scene

  510. where God

  511. says,

  512. let there

  513. be light

  514. and there

  515. was light.

  516. It's

  517. actually the

  518. entire story

  519. of Christ

  520. within the

  521. first two,

  522. three verses

  523. of Scripture.

  524. I don't know

  525. about you,

  526. but that is

  527. far more

  528. powerful

  529. than

  530. debating

  531. on

  532. how old

  533. is the

  534. universe.

  535. Talking about

  536. the earth

  537. being full

  538. of darkness

  539. and the

  540. chaos of

  541. the sea

  542. representing

  543. sin,

  544. representing

  545. brokenness,

  546. and then

  547. God saying,

  548. let there be

  549. light, and

  550. there was

  551. light.

  552. How powerful

  553. is that?

  554. And that's

  555. why I put

  556. it on the

  557. first one,

  558. the darkness

  559. over the

  560. face of

  561. the deep,

  562. this

  563. representation.

  564. we think

  565. of hurricanes

  566. and storms

  567. and how

  568. powerful it

  569. can be.

  570. Some of

  571. us may

  572. have been

  573. in a

  574. storm.

  575. I remember

  576. in the

  577. time that

  578. my wife

  579. and I

  580. were in

  581. Hawaii,

  582. the tropical

  583. storms that

  584. would happen

  585. all the

  586. time,

  587. and they

  588. would just

  589. come really

  590. quick,

  591. it would

  592. be very

  593. chaotic,

  594. and then

  595. gone.

  596. And usually

  597. it would

  598. come out

  599. of nowhere.

  600. It's like,

  601. what happened?

  602. We can

  603. watch movies,

  604. recordings,

  605. about how

  606. powerful the

  607. ocean or

  608. the sea

  609. is.

  610. So much

  611. so that

  612. there's a

  613. verse in

  614. scripture,

  615. I don't have

  616. it off the

  617. top of my

  618. head,

  619. but it

  620. talks about

  621. how in

  622. scripture,

  623. how God

  624. had to

  625. restrict the

  626. power of

  627. water in

  628. creation.

  629. That is

  630. wild.

  631. Knowing how

  632. powerful the

  633. ocean and how

  634. powerful water

  635. already is,

  636. what do you

  637. mean God

  638. had to

  639. restrict the

  640. power of

  641. it?

  642. You mean it

  643. was more

  644. powerful than

  645. it already

  646. is?

  647. Wrap your

  648. mind around

  649. that for a

  650. second here.

  651. But we

  652. think of

  653. literally the

  654. chaos of

  655. the sea,

  656. but also

  657. this

  658. representation

  659. of chaos,

  660. brokenness,

  661. and sin.

  662. And then we

  663. have within

  664. the middle

  665. of scripture

  666. this idea

  667. of Christ

  668. standing out

  669. on the boat

  670. and saying

  671. those three

  672. words,

  673. let's say it

  674. together,

  675. peace,

  676. be still.

  677. Right?

  678. Just like

  679. how the

  680. Lord said,

  681. let there be

  682. light,

  683. and there

  684. was light.

  685. Right?

  686. Light entering

  687. the scene,

  688. much like how

  689. Christ enters

  690. the scene into

  691. the dark and

  692. broken world.

  693. Christ is

  694. showing the

  695. power that

  696. he has,

  697. literally over

  698. water,

  699. but also

  700. showing that

  701. same kind

  702. of power

  703. that can be

  704. commanded in

  705. our own

  706. lives.

  707. The same

  708. God that

  709. calms the

  710. sea can

  711. calm our

  712. own hearts.

  713. peace and

  714. how chaotic

  715. our very

  716. lives can

  717. be.

  718. And how

  719. there is

  720. that peace

  721. that when

  722. it says

  723. surpasses

  724. all understanding,

  725. do you realize

  726. what that

  727. means?

  728. It is beyond

  729. comprehension.

  730. Much like

  731. the love of

  732. God,

  733. much like

  734. the hope

  735. of Christ,

  736. it is beyond

  737. our understanding

  738. and that's

  739. okay.

  740. It's okay

  741. that it's

  742. beyond our

  743. understanding.

  744. Just understand

  745. that Christ,

  746. our Lord and

  747. our God,

  748. has the

  749. final say

  750. and can

  751. command the

  752. sea.

  753. Now,

  754. you can

  755. raise your

  756. hand if you

  757. want to.

  758. How many of

  759. you have

  760. been in a

  761. storm,

  762. like a

  763. literal storm,

  764. right?

  765. I know we

  766. have storms

  767. in life,

  768. right?

  769. Wouldn't it

  770. be amazing

  771. if Christ

  772. was there

  773. and just

  774. said,

  775. peace be

  776. still in

  777. that moment,

  778. right?

  779. When you're

  780. out in a

  781. boat and

  782. it's all

  783. shaky and

  784. you feel

  785. like you're

  786. going to

  787. throw up

  788. because,

  789. you know,

  790. you're being

  791. tossed to

  792. and throw.

  793. And you

  794. think that

  795. has to

  796. take a

  797. lot of

  798. power to

  799. be able to

  800. completely calm

  801. it.

  802. I love the

  803. old little

  804. cartoons from

  805. like the

  806. 70s and

  807. 80s,

  808. right?

  809. Where Jesus

  810. goes out and

  811. then it just

  812. completely,

  813. you have this

  814. storm and

  815. the thunder and

  816. lightning and

  817. the waves and

  818. then it's like a

  819. calm and serene

  820. scene,

  821. right?

  822. Where the

  823. birds are

  824. chirping again and

  825. the disciples are

  826. like,

  827. whoa,

  828. right?

  829. And that's

  830. okay.

  831. Think of

  832. that.

  833. And how

  834. that transforms

  835. your own

  836. very life,

  837. right?

  838. So Christ

  839. out on the

  840. boat saying,

  841. peace be

  842. still.

  843. And then

  844. finally,

  845. how God

  846. makes all

  847. things new

  848. where there

  849. is no

  850. more sea.

  851. And that's

  852. found in

  853. Revelation 21

  854. 1.

  855. Now,

  856. when you

  857. read that,

  858. we read from

  859. Revelation 22,

  860. but when you

  861. read Revelation

  862. 21,

  863. it's such a

  864. weird verse.

  865. I saw the

  866. new heaven and

  867. the new

  868. earth and

  869. the sea was

  870. no more.

  871. And you're

  872. like,

  873. well,

  874. excuse me,

  875. where's the

  876. sea,

  877. right?

  878. But we're

  879. talking about

  880. that sense

  881. of chaos.

  882. Not that there

  883. won't be any

  884. water,

  885. but the

  886. chaos that

  887. happens from

  888. it.

  889. The

  890. brokenness as

  891. represented by

  892. the sea will

  893. be calm because

  894. we have this

  895. notion of

  896. streams of

  897. living water.

  898. Just like how

  899. Christ says in

  900. his own

  901. teachings about

  902. how drinking

  903. of his water

  904. and never

  905. thirsting.

  906. Do you see

  907. how beautifully

  908. connected when

  909. we talk about

  910. water, but we

  911. also talk about

  912. the peace of

  913. Christ.

  914. And so I

  915. show that as

  916. a good

  917. representation for

  918. us to understand

  919. that peace that

  920. flows from

  921. chaos, from

  922. sin, from

  923. brokenness, to

  924. the new

  925. creation.

  926. And that is

  927. remarkable.

  928. So let's go to

  929. that next slide

  930. then.

  931. So what can we

  932. learn from these

  933. passages?

  934. Well, the first

  935. one, church, is

  936. that peace

  937. begins where

  938. God enters the

  939. chaos, right?

  940. We can think of

  941. the storms,

  942. literal storms,

  943. but we can also

  944. think of the

  945. chaos that exists

  946. in our own

  947. lives, let

  948. alone the

  949. chaos that

  950. exists in

  951. our society,

  952. in our very

  953. world.

  954. There's

  955. brokenness within

  956. us, but

  957. there's also

  958. brokenness in

  959. the world that

  960. we live in.

  961. And I don't

  962. know about

  963. you, I need

  964. some peace in

  965. my life.

  966. We all need

  967. peace that

  968. Christ provides

  969. for us.

  970. That peace that

  971. surpasses all

  972. understanding,

  973. people will see

  974. that, they will

  975. recognize it.

  976. And so in

  977. this, I gave

  978. this example of

  979. the new

  980. creation replacing

  981. the sea of

  982. chaos, right?

  983. It's a good

  984. description of

  985. that.

  986. The chaos of

  987. the sea, or

  988. when you hear

  989. about people

  990. who are lost

  991. at sea, right?

  992. Representing how

  993. chaotic it is

  994. and how dangerous

  995. it can be.

  996. We think of

  997. calm, living,

  998. refreshing,

  999. rejuvenating water

  1000. and how beautiful

  1001. that imagery is.

  1002. I don't know

  1003. about you, but the

  1004. next time I'm on

  1005. a boat, I don't

1006. want to be out in

  1007. a chaotic sea.

1008. I want to be out

  1009. when it's nice and

  1010. calm, maybe a

  1011. couple waves, but

  1012. nothing to the

  1013. point where I'll

  1014. flip over.

  1015. And so we think

  1016. about that, right?

  1017. That first thing is

  1018. peace begins where

  1019. when God enters

  1020. the chaos.

  1021. The second thing

  1022. then is that peace

  1023. heals what sin

  1024. has broken.

  1025. Right?

  1026. We think of this

  1027. idea that God is

  1028. the God of

  1029. restoration.

  1030. The river of

  1031. life, it waters

  1032. the tree whose

  1033. leaves bring

  1034. healing to the

  1035. nation.

  1036. We think of how

  1037. this water is

  1038. helping the tree

  1039. and its healing

  1040. ability.

  1041. We also have to

  1042. think of how the

  1043. living water and

  1044. the peace that

  1045. comes from our

  1046. Lord and our

  1047. God, how it

  1048. heals us, how it

  1049. transforms us, and

  1050. how important it is

  1051. for us.

  1052. We all need

  1053. healing.

  1054. Do we all need

  1055. healing?

  1056. We certainly do.

  1057. We need healing

  1058. and restoration that

  1059. comes from the

  1060. Lord.

  1061. Now, what healing

  1062. looks like is

  1063. obviously going to

  1064. differ from each

  1065. person.

  1066. Some of us have

  1067. had certain

  1068. experiences, whether

  1069. it's bad

  1070. situations, people

  1071. doing evil things,

  1072. traumatic events,

1073. the list can go on

  1074. and on about things

  1075. that we experience.

  1076. But when we think

  1077. of our God being

  1078. the restorer, the

  1079. one that transforms

  1080. us, it is

  1081. remarkable.

  1082. And even when we

  1083. talk about the

  1084. common reading in

  1085. Advent 2 is Isaiah's

  1086. vision of the wolf

  1087. and the lamb.

  1088. This also is

  1089. prophetically talking

  1090. about a time where

  1091. there will be peace.

  1092. Thinking of a wolf

  1093. and a lamb together

  1094. is quite the sight,

  1095. right?

  1096. You think about that,

1097. you don't want to put

  1098. a wolf and a lamb

  1099. together nowadays.

  1100. Why is that?

  1101. Well, we know the

  1102. answer, right?

  1103. The wolf's going to

  1104. eat the sheep and

1105. have a good meal out

  1106. of there, right?

  1107. But the imagery of

  1108. them being together,

  1109. dwelling together,

  1110. is a remarkable one

  1111. at that.

  1112. And peace in

  1113. Scripture, it is the

  1114. presence of God and

  1115. the presence of

  1116. wholeness.

  1117. Complete restoration.

  1118. salvation.

1119. Now God is going to

  1120. work in and through

  1121. us every single day

1122. to make us more like

  1123. him.

  1124. And that is a

  1125. beautiful process.

  1126. When you're thinking

  1127. of this imagery of

  1128. the tree that is

  1129. bearing fruit every

  1130. month, well that tree

1131. is going to take a lot

  1132. of nourishment from

  1133. the water.

  1134. It's going to require

  1135. sunshine and all the

  1136. things that a tree

  1137. requires.

1138. Much like how for us,

1139. when the seed of the

  1140. word gets planted,

  1141. we are called to

1142. grow for us to take

1143. root in our faith and

1144. for us to bear fruit.

  1145. It's kind of remarkable

1146. when you think of what

  1147. the parables teach and

  1148. how that's connected

1149. with the tree of life.

  1150. It's like it's all, it

  1151. starts making your head

1152. go, wow, this is, this

  1153. is really incredible.

1154. And so let us remember

  1155. that peace is something

1156. that God gives to us.

1157. And for many of us, we

  1158. search for peace.

1159. Now I know for a lot of

1160. us, you know, when we

1161. have children or we have

  1162. constantly phone calls and

1163. knocks at the door, we

1164. think for a moment, well

  1165. can't I just have a little

  1166. bit of peace?

  1167. Peace and quiet, right?

  1168. Sometimes it's, you just

1169. want to lock yourself in

  1170. your office, right?

1171. Not that I ever do that,

  1172. right?

1173. Or other times you just

  1174. want to lock yourself

  1175. away.

1176. Can I have five minutes

  1177. here?

1178. You guys are too loud.

  1179. What's going on here,

  1180. right?

  1181. I'm not talking about

  1182. that kind of peace.

  1183. Although that peace is

  1184. really cool too, right?

  1185. I'm talking about a peace

  1186. that is beyond that.

  1187. A peace that is

  1188. rejuvenating.

  1189. Right?

1190. And it's kind of, it can

1191. be difficult for us to

  1192. wrap our minds around

  1193. that.

  1194. That's okay.

1195. That's the kind of peace

  1196. that I want.

  1197. A peace that I may not

  1198. even fully understand and

  1199. comprehend.

  1200. That's okay.

  1201. And finally, the third

1202. one is peace prepares us

  1203. to welcome others just

1204. as Christ has welcomed us.

1205. I mentioned the idea of

  1206. Romans 15, right?

1207. When we had our scripture

1208. reading about how we are

  1209. called to welcome one

1210. another just as Christ has

  1211. welcomed us.

1212. We also think of how

1213. there's the call for us to

1214. bear fruit, real change and

  1215. transformation.

  1216. Peace then is relational.

1217. We are to give the peace

1218. of Christ to other people.

1219. And we do that by the

1220. words that we speak and

1221. the actions that we do.

1222. And we think for a moment

1223. that peace will make room.

  1224. It will build bridges

  1225. instead of walls.

1226. We think of how the peace

1227. of Christ can very much

  1228. transform our minds and

  1229. our hearts.

  1230. And so,

  1231. ask yourself that question.

  1232. Who is someone

  1233. that you can welcome

  1234. to know Christ?

  1235. Who is someone

1236. that God may be calling

  1237. you to welcome

1238. or to share that peace

  1239. with?

1240. These are the kind of

  1241. questions.

1242. Let's go to the application

1243. and the final piece here.

  1244. How should we,

  1245. what should we do

  1246. because of this?

  1247. it's very unusual

  1248. and peculiar

  1249. to look at revelation

1250. from the sense of peace.

  1251. But then again,

  1252. it isn't

  1253. because it's connected

  1254. about the peace

  1255. that we will receive

  1256. in the future.

  1257. Just as we anticipate

1258. and we wait for the arrival

  1259. of baby Jesus

  1260. in the manger,

  1261. in the first coming,

  1262. we await for

  1263. the second coming

  1264. of Christ.

  1265. It's that same kind

  1266. of anticipation

  1267. and it's that same

  1268. kind of preparation.

  1269. And so,

  1270. in all of this,

  1271. let Christ speak

  1272. peace

  1273. over your chaos.

  1274. Right?

  1275. We think of how

  1276. there are storms

  1277. literally in the world

  1278. that we live in,

  1279. but let's also think

  1280. of the storms

  1281. that exist

  1282. in our own minds

1283. and in our own hearts.

  1284. peace.

  1285. And how powerful

1286. is it that we should

  1287. even pray,

  1288. Jesus,

  1289. speak peace

  1290. over this place,

  1291. over this area

  1292. in my life.

  1293. Lord,

  1294. I have a storm.

  1295. I've got a stormy sea

  1296. in this area

  1297. of my life,

  1298. right?

  1299. Don't raise your hand

  1300. on what that is,

  1301. but we all got

  1302. a stormy sea.

  1303. And we ask Christ

  1304. who commands,

  1305. who has command

  1306. over the sea

  1307. to bring peace

  1308. into our lives

  1309. and to bring peace

  1310. into certain areas

  1311. in our life.

1312. And how important it is,

1313. think of that one area

  1314. and ask Jesus

  1315. to intervene

  1316. and to bring peace

  1317. into your life,

  1318. whatever that may be.

1319. It could be a family member.

1320. It could be a relationship

  1321. with a friend.

1322. It could be your own battles.

  1323. Don't we have battles

1324. that we face every day?

  1325. We certainly do.

  1326. And we ask God

  1327. to help us

  1328. to bring peace

  1329. in our life.

  1330. We think of strength

1331. that comes from the Lord

  1332. and how God provides

  1333. for us.

1334. We certainly should seek Him

  1335. and ask for help.

  1336. The second thing then

1337. is to let God's peace

  1338. flow into your relationships

  1339. just as God transforms

  1340. our lives.

  1341. We have to be

  1342. those ambassadors

  1343. for Christ.

  1344. In what we say

1345. and in what we do,

  1346. we don't just hide

  1347. the light of God,

  1348. right?

1349. Hide it under a bushel.

  1350. No,

1351. I'm going to let it shine,

  1352. right?

  1353. In the same way,

1354. when God gives you peace,

1355. share that with other people.

  1356. And it will.

  1357. it will fundamentally change

  1358. your life

1359. to where how you interact

  1360. with people is different.

  1361. To where how friends

1362. or family would be like,

  1363. dude,

1364. you're not the same guy

  1365. I knew.

1366. What's going on with you?

  1367. What's gotten into you,

  1368. right?

1369. You have those kind of

  1370. conversations

  1371. about transformation,

  1372. about the peace.

  1373. peace.

  1374. And people recognize

  1375. that kind of peace.

1376. Why are you so calm

  1377. when X, Y, and Z

  1378. is going on?

  1379. How can you withstand

  1380. this kind of pressure

  1381. when other people

  1382. would crumble

  1383. or they would fall

1384. or they would go crazy

  1385. in this situation?

  1386. But yet,

  1387. that peace that surpasses

  1388. all understanding

  1389. will carry you through.

  1390. It'll certainly carry you

  1391. through any situation

  1392. that you go through.

  1393. Why do you think

1394. it's written in the Psalms,

  1395. even though I walk

  1396. through the valley

1397. of the shadow of death,

1398. I will fear no evil

1399. for you are with me.

  1400. Why do you think

  1401. that's written in there?

  1402. It's for us

  1403. to recognize

1404. that God is with us

  1405. as we journey

  1406. through life,

  1407. as we go through

  1408. storms in this life,

  1409. as we go through

  1410. situations in here.

  1411. And so,

  1412. a challenge for you

  1413. is to choose

  1414. practice

  1415. an act of peace.

  1416. Perhaps

1417. it is a gentle word.

  1418. Words of encouragement.

  1419. Our words

  1420. have such gravity

  1421. to them, right?

  1422. You can think of

  1423. famous speeches, right?

  1424. Ones that give life

1425. and ones that give what?

  1426. Death.

  1427. Evil.

  1428. Think of how powerful

  1429. our tongue is, right?

  1430. How many of you

  1431. had a parent say,

  1432. hold your tongue?

  1433. Because you didn't know

1434. how to control it, right?

  1435. And certainly,

  1436. I wish I could tell

  1437. some people,

1438. you gotta hold your tongue,

  1439. right?

  1440. But certainly,

1441. it even says in Scripture

  1442. that death and life

  1443. are in the power

  1444. of the tongue.

1445. We've got to be mindful

  1446. of what we speak

  1447. to people.

  1448. a gentle word,

  1449. the ministry of presence,

  1450. being present with people,

  1451. showing up.

1452. Showing up is the first thing

  1453. that we can do.

  1454. Sometimes there are situations

  1455. in our life

  1456. where just showing up

  1457. and not even know

  1458. what to say.

  1459. Just you being there

  1460. is enough

  1461. for so many people.

  1462. There have been times

  1463. where I have

  1464. visited someone

1465. and I did not have

  1466. the words to say,

1467. if you can believe that.

  1468. I'm a man of many words.

  1469. But there are times

  1470. I don't know what to say.

  1471. And I'm just there

  1472. in that moment.

  1473. Do you know

  1474. that kind of action

  1475. can speak volumes

  1476. to people?

  1477. Being there for someone,

1478. giving them a phone call,

  1479. sending a text,

  1480. or just showing up,

  1481. hey,

  1482. I heard this happened.

  1483. I'm here for you.

  1484. That's it.

  1485. Because we all need,

1486. it's like that famous saying,

1487. we all need a shoulder

  1488. to cry on, amen?

  1489. We all need someone.

1490. And I think of this church

1491. and I think of how

1492. this church has been seen

  1493. as a hospital

1494. for those that are hurting.

  1495. And I think that's something

  1496. I think a lot of churches

  1497. should be known for.

  1498. a place where

1499. you think of a hospital

  1500. or you think of

  1501. this sense of nourishment.

1502. If you broke your leg,

1503. you certainly want to make sure

  1504. you take care

  1505. of the immediate pain,

  1506. right?

1507. I think anyone with common sense

1508. would want to make sure

  1509. they get relief.

  1510. But to be able

  1511. to strengthen the leg,

1512. to be able to have

  1513. physical recovery,

  1514. physical therapy

  1515. to where

  1516. now I can work

  1517. with the leg

  1518. completely.

  1519. Now,

  1520. not all of us

  1521. are going to break

  1522. our legs here,

  1523. but I'm using this

  1524. as an example

1525. of why it's so important

  1526. for us to have

  1527. spiritual nourishment

  1528. and spiritual healing.

  1529. We have to think

  1530. of how

  1531. when we're out

  1532. in the field

  1533. or when we're out

  1534. in our own

  1535. everyday life,

  1536. sometimes

  1537. we get hurt.

  1538. And it's important

  1539. for us to come

1540. to the body of Christ,

  1541. the community of believers

  1542. for prayer,

  1543. support,

  1544. and encouragement

  1545. for each other.

  1546. I was reading a book

  1547. one time

  1548. that was saying

  1549. that for every

  1550. rebuke

  1551. that a pastor

  1552. must give,

  1553. there's about

  1554. 10 different

  1555. opportunities

  1556. for that pastor

  1557. to speak encouragement

  1558. to people.

  1559. Because more often

  1560. than not,

  1561. rebuke

  1562. is not as common

  1563. as someone

  1564. who needs help

  1565. and assistance

  1566. or someone

  1567. who needs prayer

  1568. and encouragement.

  1569. That was a very,

  1570. I don't remember

1571. the name of the book

  1572. and if you ask

  1573. we'll talk after,

1574. I'll see if I can find it.

  1575. But I remember

  1576. that that struck

  1577. a chord with me

  1578. because there are

  1579. some people

  1580. that all they are

  1581. is focused on

  1582. rebuking and correcting

  1583. and making sure

  1584. people are on the

  1585. straight and narrow.

  1586. Certainly,

  1587. by all means

  1588. that's important.

  1589. But what about

  1590. people that are hurting?

  1591. What about people

  1592. that need presence,

  1593. words of encouragement,

  1594. these kind of things

  1595. are so critical.

  1596. They are crucial

  1597. for us.

  1598. Finally,

  1599. our last thing

  1600. is to bear

  1601. the fruit

  1602. of transformation

  1603. this Advent season.

  1604. Identify

  1605. a pattern.

  1606. Maybe there is

  1607. something that you

  1608. need to address

  1609. in your life.

  1610. Maybe it's sin.

  1611. Maybe it's having

  1612. a conversation

  1613. with a friend

  1614. or a family member.

  1615. Instead of

  1616. defensiveness,

  1617. defensiveness,

  1618. offer understanding.

  1619. You know how hard

  1620. it is to talk

  1621. with someone

  1622. you don't agree with?

  1623. Right?

  1624. They're making

  1625. life choices.

  1626. That doesn't mean

  1627. we're not standing

  1628. on the word.

  1629. We certainly

  1630. stand strong

  1631. in our convictions

  1632. and we deal

  1633. in love

  1634. with other people.

  1635. Instead of avoidance,

  1636. offer presence.

  1637. sometimes

  1638. it's difficult

  1639. to have difficult

  1640. conversations.

  1641. That's why they're

  1642. called difficult

  1643. conversations.

  1644. Right?

  1645. But sometimes

  1646. it's better

  1647. to just be present

  1648. in those moments.

  1649. Offering

  1650. to build that

  1651. bridge

  1652. with another

  1653. person.

  1654. And instead

  1655. of fear,

  1656. offer trust.

  1657. And certainly

  1658. we have to think

  1659. of what is

  1660. appropriate

  1661. and what is not.

  1662. We have to use

  1663. discernment

  1664. in these kind

  1665. of things.

  1666. But I want you

  1667. to think

  1668. nonetheless

  1669. of how peace

  1670. is not passive.

  1671. It is the path

  1672. that leads

  1673. to life.

  1674. And how important

  1675. having that peace

  1676. of Christ is.

  1677. And how it

  1678. transforms us

  1679. and transforms

  1680. other people.

1681. And I want to go

  1682. to that slide,

  1683. the three images,

  1684. Matteo,

  1685. if that's alright.

  1686. The image

  1687. with Christ,

  1688. the Prince of Peace.

1689. And I kind of want

  1690. to close with this.

  1691. That the biblical

  1692. story talks

  1693. about the chaos

  1694. of the waters,

  1695. the chaos

  1696. of the sea,

  1697. and how

  1698. Christ

  1699. enters the sea

  1700. standing

  1701. on the chaotic

  1702. water.

  1703. Right?

  1704. Not afraid.

  1705. And how

  1706. the disciples

  1707. and how even

  1708. us can be afraid

  1709. of standing

  1710. on a boat,

  1711. right?

  1712. When there's chaos

  1713. going on.

  1714. God's

  1715. But how Christ

  1716. stands with

  1717. such authority

  1718. and presence

  1719. and power

  1720. to command

  1721. the sea

  1722. and the sea

  1723. obeys.

  1724. And it ends

  1725. with the river

  1726. of life.

  1727. let us think

  1728. of Christ

  1729. as the Prince

  1730. of Peace,

  1731. the one

  1732. who can

  1733. calm storms,

  1734. literally,

  1735. but also

  1736. the storms

  1737. in our life.

  1738. How Christ

  1739. will heal

  1740. our wounds

  1741. and he's

  1742. preparing

  1743. a new heaven

  1744. and a new earth.

  1745. And so

  1746. this Advent,

  1747. may you hear

  1748. Christ speaking

  1749. peace

  1750. over your

  1751. chaos,

  1752. over the storms

  1753. of your life

  1754. and may

  1755. the river

  1756. of life

  1757. flow through

  1758. the broken

  1759. places

  1760. in your life.

  1761. May there be

  1762. healing,

  1763. restoration,

  1764. transformation

  1765. and renewal.

  1766. And whether we

  1767. got that broken

  1768. leg

  1769. or we're

  1770. strengthening it,

  1771. may we be

  1772. on a path

  1773. of healing,

  1774. renewal

  1775. and strength

  1776. from Christ.

  1777. May his

  1778. healing peace

  1779. move through

  1780. you and

  1781. to others.

  1782. Let's pray

  1783. together.

  1784. And Father,

  1785. we thank you

  1786. for this time

  1787. and this

  1788. opportunity for

  1789. us to go

  1790. over this

  1791. wonderful Advent

  1792. theme of

  1793. peace.

  1794. And in going

  1795. over Revelation

  1796. and this scene

  1797. of what the

  1798. new heaven

  1799. and new earth

  1800. will be like,

  1801. may we take

  1802. away from

  1803. this sermon

  1804. how your

  1805. son,

  1806. Jesus Christ,

  1807. commands

  1808. the storm

  1809. and how

  1810. he has

  1811. the power

  1812. and the

  1813. authority

  1814. to speak

  1815. the words

  1816. peace,

  1817. be still.

  1818. And I

  1819. pray for

  1820. every person

  1821. here.

  1822. If they're

  1823. experiencing

  1824. chaos in a

  1825. certain area,

  1826. a stormy sea

  1827. or a stormy

  1828. situation,

  1829. that you

  1830. will intervene

  1831. and let there

  1832. be peace

  1833. in their life.

  1834. I pray for

  1835. the people

  1836. that are

  1837. watching online,

  1838. the people

  1839. that will be

  1840. listening to

  1841. the podcast

  1842. recording of

  1843. this,

  1844. that they

  1845. will know

  1846. God calls

  1847. them to

  1848. receive his

  1849. grace.

  1850. God also

  1851. calls them

  1852. to receive

  1853. his peace.

  1854. May we

  1855. never forget

  1856. that.

  1857. May we

  1858. never lose

  1859. sight of

  1860. that,

  1861. knowing that

  1862. Christ is

  1863. the Prince

  1864. of Peace.

  1865. We love

  1866. you,

  1867. we praise

  1868. you,

  1869. we glorify

  1870. you,

  1871. and we

  1872. honor you.

  1873. we're so

  1874. in awe

  1875. of who

  1876. you are,

  1877. just as

  1878. that song

  1879. says,

  1880. great are

  1881. you,

  1882. Lord,

  1883. and may

  1884. we pour

  1885. out our

  1886. praise to

  1887. you.

  1888. It is in

  1889. the name

  1890. of Jesus

  1891. Christ,

  1892. the Prince

  1893. of Peace,

  1894. that we

  1895. pray,

  1896. and we

  1897. all say

  1898. together,

  1899. amen,

  1900. church.

  1901. Amen.

  1902. Thank you

  1903. for listening

  1904. to today's

  1905. message.

  1906. I hope

  1907. that this

  1908. sermon

  1909. encouraged

  1910. you.

  1911. You know,

  1912. when I was

  1913. preparing this

  1914. message,

  1915. I kept

  1916. thinking about

  1917. this imagery

  1918. of that

  1919. which is

  1920. chaotic

  1921. to the

  1922. river

  1923. of life,

  1924. the river

  1925. that is

  1926. flowing

  1927. from God's

  1928. throne.

  1929. It is

  1930. something

  1931. that is

  1932. remarkable,

  1933. it is

  1934. something

  1935. that is

  1936. abundant,

  1937. powerful,

  1938. and life-giving,

  1939. and that

  1940. is what

  1941. God's peace

  1942. is like.

  1943. It flows

  1944. like a river.

  1945. But here's

  1946. another thing

  1947. that really

  1948. struck me.

  1949. Peace

  1950. isn't just

  1951. something that

  1952. we receive,

  1953. it flows

  1954. through us,

  1955. from the

  1956. throne,

  1957. to the

  1958. river,

  1959. to us,

  1960. and to

  1961. others.

  1962. It's this

  1963. constant movement

  1964. of peace

  1965. that is found

  1966. in Scripture.

  1967. And that's

  1968. what this

  1969. message teaches

  1970. us,

  1971. that peace

  1972. begins where

  1973. God enters

  1974. the chaos.

  1975. Peace

  1976. heals

  1977. what sin

  1978. has broken,

  1979. and peace

  1980. prepares us

  1981. to welcome

  1982. others the

  1983. way that

  1984. Christ has

  1985. welcomed us.

  1986. I want

  1987. to challenge

  1988. you this

  1989. week with

  1990. something that

  1991. is practical.

  1992. Think of

  1993. one area

  1994. where chaos

  1995. is loud

  1996. in your

  1997. life.

  1998. Maybe

  1999. it's a

  2000. relationship.

  2001. Maybe

  2002. it's anxiety.

  2003. Maybe

  2004. it's just

  2005. something

  2006. internal

  2007. that you're

  2008. wrestling

  2009. with.

  2010. And I

  2011. want you

  2012. to begin

  2013. each day

  2014. with this

  2015. simple

  2016. prayer that

  2017. I mentioned

  2018. in the

  2019. sermon

  2020. today.

  2021. Jesus,

  2022. speak

  2023. peace

  2024. over this

  2025. place in

  2026. my life.

  2027. Just

  2028. that.

  2029. Name

  2030. that area,

  2031. identify it,

  2032. and trust

  2033. it to the

  2034. one who

  2035. calms the

  2036. storms.

  2037. See what

  2038. happens when

  2039. you invite

  2040. Christ to

  2041. speak peace

  2042. over the

  2043. chaos,

  2044. even in

  2045. your own

  2046. life.

  2047. The great

  2048. thing is,

  2049. you do

  2050. not have

  2051. to manufacture

  2052. peace.

  2053. You don't

  2054. have to

  2055. fix

  2056. everything.

  2057. You just

  2058. have to

  2059. let God's

  2060. peace flow

  2061. through you.

  2062. All of

  2063. our resources

  2064. from today,

  2065. the devotional,

  2066. the notes,

  2067. the slides,

  2068. all of the

  2069. things,

  2070. they are

  2071. available for

  2072. free on

  2073. our

  2074. website

  2075. at

  2076. ontariocommunitychurch.org.

  2077. Everything is

  2078. also in our

  2079. sermon archive,

  2080. so you can

  2081. go back and

  2082. review or

  2083. even share it

  2084. with someone

  2085. else.

  2086. That is

  2087. very much

  2088. encouraged.

  2089. Next week,

  2090. we continue

  2091. our Advent

  2092. series with

  2093. week three,

  2094. focusing on

  2095. joy.

  2096. But until

  2097. then,

  2098. let us

  2099. think of

  2100. that image

  2101. of how

  2102. Christ will

  2103. calm the

  2104. storms,

  2105. the literal

  2106. storms,

  2107. but also

  2108. the storms

  2109. in our

  2110. life.

  2111. May the

  2112. river of

  2113. peace flow

  2114. through you

  2115. this week.

  2116. May Christ

  2117. speak calm

  2118. over every

  2119. chaos in

  2120. your life,

  2121. and may

  2122. you be a

  2123. carrier of

  2124. peace to

  2125. those around

  2126. you.

  2127. God bless

  2128. you.

  2129. We will

  2130. see you

  2131. next week

  2132. as we

  2133. continue

  2134. through

  2135. Advent.

  2136. Thank you.

  2137. up.

  2138. up up

  2139. up up

  2140. Thank you.

  2141. Thank you.
