  1. Welcome to Ontario Community Church, where we are encouraging, equipping, and engaging lives for Christ.

  2. ! I'm Pastor Patrick Daly, and you're listening to the sermon podcast for December 28th, 2025.

  3. This is a special Sunday, as it is the last Sunday in the year 2025.

  4. Today, we are looking at Ephesians 2, verses 13-22, with the sermon titled, Building Bridges to Peace.

    Ephesians 2:13–22

  5. Looking back at 2025, this year the theme was Building Bridges.

  6. And as we come to the close of the end of this year, we find ourselves in a unique moment.

  7. We are standing on this bridge between two years, 2025 and 2026.

  8. We're right after Christmas, right before the new year.

  9. It is a time where we are in between these two years,

  10. and we reflect with gratitude with how God has been faithful in the past,

  11. we live in the present, and we look forward, trusting in God for what He has in store for us in the next year, 2026.

  12. In Ephesians 2, the Apostle Paul writes about how Christ is our peace.

  13. He is not just a teacher of peace, but Christ is peace Himself.

  14. Through His blood, through His sacrifice, those who were far off have been brought near.

  15. The dividing wall of hostility has been broken down.

  16. We who were once strangers and aliens are now fellow citizens and members of God's household,

  17. built on Christ as the cornerstone.

  18. This message also connects with 1 Samuel 7, verse 12,

    1 Samuel 7:12

  19. where Samuel raises up this stone called an Ebenezer stone, saying,

  20. Thus far the Lord has helped us.

  21. It's both a remembrance and a reminder of God's faithfulness,

  22. as well as a declaration of continued trust in Him for what is about to come next.

  23. I always found that so interesting, this Ebenezer stone,

  24. because it is connected with what we find in that famous hymn, Come Thou Fount.

  25. You may know the lyric in verse 2,

  26. Here I raise my Ebenezer.

  27. Many people, we don't know what that word or that lyric even means,

  28. but I found it so interesting how it's connected with 1 Samuel 7.

  29. As we listen to this message, we will explore the observation,

  30. the interpretation, and the application.

  31. Let us stand on the bridge and remember that God has been there with us the entire way.

  32. May we boldly cross the bridge faithfully.

  33. May we trust in Him,

  34. and may we be moved to be a peacemaker with Christ beside us.

  35. Let us dive into God's word together.

  36. This is one of the very few times you'll see me actually sitting down.

  37. I've been, I was sick this week and I've been recovering.

  38. I am recovered, but I don't want to move around and have a disaster go on.

  39. So I hope you can forgive me with that.

  40. But with that in mind, we're, you know, we're at the last Sunday of this year, of 2025,

  41. and it's been really remarkable seeing how much time has been flying by.

  42. You know, there's a famous saying that time flies when you're having fun,

  43. and I hope that a lot of us are having a lot of fun here in the process, right?

  44. You know, when we look back at 2025 and we think of just all of the things that have happened,

  45. I am amazed at how fast the year has gone by.

  46. Have you felt that way?

  47. The year has just completely just gone by, you know?

  48. I titled this sermon, Building Bridges to Peace.

  49. Kind of as a, we're going to open our Bibles together.

  50. We're going to go to Ephesians chapter 2, if you want to go ahead and open there.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  51. It's going to be from page 1160.

  52. Feel free to turn there.

  53. The theme for this year, for 2025, was building bridges.

  54. And the reason why that was the theme was considering how important it is for us as Christians

  55. to know that there is no dividing wall.

  56. There's nothing that separates us from the love of Christ.

  57. And just as Christ has loved each and every one of us,

  58. we are called to build bridges with other people.

  59. Those even in our own family.

  60. Those within our community.

  61. And just how to really think of how God has been working in this place

  62. has just been something that's been remarkable.

  63. And so, let's pray.

  64. And then we will read from the Word of God.

  65. And we'll go into it.

  66. And Father God, we thank you for this time and for this opportunity for us to gather

  67. on the last Sunday of 2025.

  68. I really hope and pray that each and every one of us who are here in person

  69. or here online,

  70. that they know that they are loved by you.

  71. And I hope that we've had a lot more good than bad.

  72. You know, as I was mentioning, Father, that time flies when you're having fun.

  73. I hope that we've had good experiences.

  74. But even if we've had bad or ugly experiences,

  75. may we turn to you.

  76. May we take this Sunday, this time,

  77. to reflect not only on our own personal walk with you,

  78. but how you have worked in and through our personal lives

  79. and in and through this church.

  80. We're so grateful for your love.

  81. We're grateful for you sending your son, Jesus,

  82. who is our peace.

  83. We love you.

  84. We praise you.

  85. We glorify you.

  86. And we honor you.

  87. It's in the name of Jesus that we pray and we all say together, amen.

  88. So, from Ephesians chapter 2,

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  89. it's going to be from verses 13 through 22.

  90. We can actually start from verse 11, right,

  91. where it says,

  92. one in Christ.

  93. Therefore, remember that at one time,

  94. you Gentiles in the flesh,

  95. called uncircumcision by what is called the circumcision, right?

  96. So, it's talking about circumcision versus uncircumcision,

  97. which is made in the flesh by hands.

  98. Remember that you were at the time separated from Christ,

  99. alienated from the commonwealth of Israel

  100. and strangers to the covenant,

  101. the covenants of promise,

  102. having no hope and without God in the world.

  103. So, we're thinking of the Gentiles, right?

  104. The idea that they were outside of salvation.

  105. They were outside of the fold of God.

  106. But it goes on in verse 13,

  107. but now, right?

  108. Don't you love when verses say,

  109. but then or but now, right?

  110. That's a very important thing we see.

  111. But now in Christ Jesus,

  112. what does it say?

  113. You who were once far off

  114. have been brought near by what?

  115. By the blood of Christ.

  116. That's very important, right?

  117. Verse 14,

  118. For he himself is our what?

  119. Our peace.

  120. Who has made us both one

  121. and has broken down in his flesh the what?

  122. The dividing wall of hostility.

  123. That's very important, right?

  124. Nothing that will separate us from Christ.

  125. By abolishing the law of commandments

  126. expressed in ordinances

  127. that he might create in himself,

  128. one new man in place of the two,

  129. so making peace.

  130. And might reconcile us both to God

  131. in one body through the cross,

  132. thereby killing the hostility.

  133. And he came and preached peace to you

  134. who were far off

  135. and peace to those who were near.

  136. So, it's the same message, right?

  137. You see here that peace was being preached

  138. to those who were far off,

  139. those who were outside of the fold,

  140. and those who were near.

  141. Verse 18,

  142. For through him,

  143. we both have access in one spirit to the Father.

  144. What interesting language we see here, right?

  145. To have access to the Father, right?

  146. I always love giving this example

  147. where when we think of prayer,

  148. we can think of how we have a direct line to God.

  149. You know how difficult it is

  150. to have a direct line to a CEO, right?

  151. The boss, the administrator.

  152. We think of how difficult it is

  153. in our own everyday life

  154. to get in touch with somebody,

  155. and then if you get in touch with them,

  156. do they have the time, right?

  157. Usually, they're busy.

  158. They've got appointments and meetings.

  159. But when it comes to God,

  160. having that direct line

  161. and that direct access,

  162. as this text is saying,

  163. is something that is astonishing.

  164. So, it goes into verse 19.

  165. So then you are no longer strangers and aliens,

  166. but you are what, church?

  167. Fellow citizens.

  168. With the saints and members

  169. of the household of God.

  170. That kind of reminds,

  171. should remind us of how

  172. when Christ says that in his,

  173. there are many rooms, right?

  174. We know of that verse.

  175. In the house, there are many rooms.

  176. And so, it goes on, verse 20.

  177. But the foundation of the apostles and prophets,

  178. Christ Jesus himself being the what?

  179. The cornerstone, right?

  180. The most important stone, right?

  181. The one that sustains everything together.

  182. That's very powerful.

  183. Verse 21.

  184. In whom the whole structure,

  185. being joined together,

  186. grows into a holy temple in the Lord.

  187. Verse 22.

  188. In him, you also are being built together

  189. into a dwelling place

  190. for God by the Spirit.

  191. And so, this is very interesting.

  192. We're going to piece all of this together, right?

  193. We're thinking about it.

  194. We celebrated the Advent season,

  195. the Christmas season, right?

  196. We were talking about Emmanuel,

  197. God being, God coming near to us.

  198. And we have this verse,

  199. and you'll see it later on.

  200. It was in our interactive reading,

  201. where it said,

  202. thus far, the Lord has helped us.

  203. And this is connected to what we have in Ephesians

  204. and what we have for today.

  205. In moments when you're between,

  206. we're basically between two seasons here.

  207. As a church body,

  208. we celebrated our 80th anniversary.

  209. For many of us,

  210. we had all of the things happening in 2025,

  211. and we're about to go into 2026.

  212. We're in that little middle space.

  213. And it's a very interesting space to be in, isn't it?

  214. Right after Christmas,

  215. right before the new year.

  216. But we can think to ourself

  217. how the Lord has helped us

  218. and been there for us.

  219. A bridge between two years,

  220. looking back at last year

  221. and stepping forward into the new year.

  222. And how important it is for us

  223. to celebrate the past victories

  224. that have happened through Christ.

  225. And how we humbly come before the Lord

  226. for direction and for guidance.

  227. And when we look at this Ephesians passage, right?

  228. The language is mentioning those that were far off,

  229. those that were distant,

  230. and they are brought near by the blood of Christ.

  231. Mentioning the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross.

  232. We think of the Christian faith.

  233. We think of how the Word became flesh

  234. and dwelt among us, right?

  235. When we talk about the Advent season, right?

  236. Emmanuel, God with us.

  237. How we still have our nativity scene, right?

  238. The representation.

  239. The story of how Jesus is coming into the earth

  240. in such humble beginnings as a child.

  241. And we think all of this happens

  242. so that we can be included into salvation.

  243. That God gives us the opportunity

  244. for us to respond to that salvation.

  245. That we can have security in Him.

  246. Newness of life in Him.

  247. Ephesians is also saying

  248. that through the cross,

  249. Jesus creates one new humanity.

  250. Just like how Scripture says

  251. that we are a new creation

  252. and how important it is for us

  253. to lay aside

  254. the former things of the former life

  255. and to seek the things that are higher,

  256. the things that are nobler,

  257. to grow in Christ,

  258. not to just remain a spiritual child

  259. all of your life.

  260. But to mature

  261. and to grow

  262. just as a fruit tree

  263. will produce fruit,

  264. we are called to do the same thing.

  265. And the very notion

  266. that we have access to the Father

  267. by one Spirit

  268. is a remarkable thing.

  269. It should give us comfort

  270. when we hear

  271. that we have access to God.

  272. It always saddens me

  273. when I hear about people saying,

  274. well, God is distant.

  275. He is far away

  276. and He doesn't care.

  277. How wrong can you be

  278. knowing that we have access to God?

  279. We can pray to Him.

  280. And even in moments

  281. where we don't think He's there

  282. or in moments

  283. we don't feel He is there,

  284. He is still there with us.

  285. Just think of how

  286. in our own life

  287. here on the earth,

  288. God's going to be there

  289. with you

  290. in every season of your life,

  291. in every moment.

  292. That's a very comforting thing.

  293. And I, as a pastor,

  294. I speak very much against this notion

  295. that God is far away.

  296. we can see

  297. in the Christmas season

  298. and even in these passages

  299. the nearness of God

  300. and how He desires

  301. to be with us

  302. and how in the same way

  303. we should desire

  304. to be in the presence

  305. of the Lord,

  306. to be close to Him,

  307. to grow in Him

  308. as it were.

  309. And the language

  310. when it talks about

  311. no longer being strangers

  312. but being welcome

  313. in the household,

  314. it's just like how I

  315. preached previously

  316. about

  317. all of these parables

  318. that talk about

  319. being ready for the feast

  320. or the great banquet

  321. as it were

  322. and having the proper clothes

  323. for the banquet.

  324. There's so many different

  325. parallels that we can see here.

  326. in this verse,

  327. to no longer be a stranger

  328. but to be part

  329. of God's household.

  330. That's a sense of closeness, right?

  331. Imagine for,

  332. in your own story,

  333. if you invited someone,

  334. a stranger,

  335. into your own home,

  336. at what point

  337. do they become

  338. a member of the family?

  339. It takes a lot of intention.

  340. And I'm not saying

  341. you all should do that

  342. and I'm not saying

  343. it's all going to happen

  344. in our own circumstance

  345. but just think

  346. of the amount

  347. of trust,

  348. love,

  349. and intentionality

  350. that takes

  351. and for God

  352. to

  353. welcome us in.

  354. That's powerful.

  355. That's an amazing

  356. kind of love

  357. that God has for us.

  358. We are known to God.

  359. Scripture talks about

  360. how we are given

  361. new names,

  362. new identities,

  363. and even new clothes.

  364. Just like how we've been

  365. taking a break

  366. from our Revelation series

  367. but how in Revelation

  368. it says,

  369. blessed is the one

  370. who washes his robes.

  371. How that's so connected

  372. with going from filthy rags

  373. into new clothes.

  374. Isn't that powerful?

  375. How we see all these

  376. connections here.

  377. And it's a reminder for us

  378. that Christ is the cornerstone

  379. and we are being built

  380. together

  381. into a dwelling place

  382. for God.

  383. Christ being the cornerstone,

  384. being the most important stone

  385. that holds everything together.

  386. I love thinking of the famous

  387. children's song,

  388. He's Got the Whole World

  389. in His Hands.

  390. Right?

  391. Talking about the sustenance,

  392. the sustaining power of God,

  393. that He's got this.

  394. To have the whole world

  395. in His hands,

  396. that's a lot of care

  397. and intentionality, right?

  398. That kind of imagery.

  399. If you,

  400. some of you,

  401. you may have worked

  402. with model toys

  403. or model houses.

  404. I have a friend of mine

  405. who works with model tanks

  406. and the amount of work

  407. that it takes

  408. to make sure things are correct

  409. and things don't break

  410. is a lot of work

  411. and that's just a little tank.

  412. Imagine how God

  413. is sustaining the world.

  414. How powerful that is.

  415. And so,

  416. I have

  417. the slide here.

  418. What we can observe

  419. from that entire set of passages,

  420. if there's anything

  421. you can take away from that,

  422. is that Christ is our peace.

  423. And I have this image of,

  424. how many of you have experienced

  425. or you've seen something like this, right?

  426. You're at a very serene kind of lake

  427. and there's like that one drop

  428. and you see the ripple effects, right?

  429. It's very calming.

  430. It's very satisfying.

  431. And that's just one,

  432. a smaller example,

  433. but we can think of how Christ,

  434. in all of these verses,

  435. being our peace

  436. and breaking down that dividing wall.

  437. And we think how very often

  438. the text describes

  439. not only what the wall is,

  440. but that the wall is dividing

  441. and that it's hostile.

  442. And that's,

  443. I don't want that kind of wall.

  444. And to know that God is

  445. removing

  446. that kind of wall

  447. and offering peace instead

  448. is just something that is,

  449. it can be very hard for us

  450. to wrap our mind around.

  451. And it's something that can be

  452. very above our understanding

  453. and that's okay.

  454. But I just thought that image,

  455. nonetheless,

  456. you can think of how

  457. in your own context,

  458. in your own life,

  459. something that is calming

  460. and peaceful.

  461. And think of how Christ

  462. is much greater

  463. than just a drop on a lake

  464. or a, you know,

  465. whatever you have.

  466. I mentioned about 2025

  467. how we were focusing

  468. on building bridges.

  469. And by the grace of God,

  470. we have had

  471. 10 children

  472. dedicated to the Lord.

  473. By the grace of God,

  474. we have had four baptisms.

  475. And from what I understand,

  476. we're looking at two

  477. beginning next year.

  478. Isn't that showing

  479. how God is working

  480. in this place?

  481. God is doing a new thing.

  482. And we are blessed by

  483. not just the 10 children

  484. in the four baptisms,

  485. but the families

  486. that are involved in it.

  487. And we think about how

  488. powerful

  489. evidence of God's grace.

  490. We are blessed that

  491. these families are dedicating

  492. their children to their Lord

  493. and that lives

  494. are being transformed.

  495. Making that public statement,

  496. saying,

  497. I believe

  498. in Jesus.

  499. Let us remember

  500. to believe in Christ

  501. is very personal.

  502. To be baptized then,

  503. that's very public.

  504. And it's very remarkable.

  505. It's something we should

  506. all celebrate together.

  507. You know,

  508. I always get a little,

  509. I get a little jealous

  510. sometime when I

  511. see videos of people

  512. getting baptized

  513. in the River Jordan.

  514. I think that's so cool.

  515. You know,

  516. I couldn't afford a flight.

  517. You know,

  518. I didn't get baptized

  519. in the River Jordan

  520. and not many of us can.

  521. But,

  522. in any sense,

  523. to show

  524. that

  525. sense of

  526. celebration,

  527. that public

  528. proclamation.

  529. We've seen

  530. in this course

  531. of this year

  532. that

  533. God has been

  534. allowing for us

  535. to partner

  536. with other

  537. organizations.

  538. My wife,

  539. myself,

  540. we've talked about

  541. our partnership

  542. with Building Healthy Families

  543. to help strengthen

  544. families

  545. and by us

  546. being present,

  547. that builds

  548. relationships.

  549. And,

  550. not to mention

  551. our STEAM Nights.

  552. Do you know

  553. our STEAM Nights

  554. are hosted

  555. by this church,

  556. our own church,

  557. and we have

  558. an average

  559. of 40 people

  560. who attend

  561. every single time?

  562. That's something

  563. that is for families,

  564. for communities,

  565. to be exposed

  566. to something

  567. that,

  568. to be exposed

  569. to the church,

  570. but also to be

  571. exposed to community.

  572. And that's something

  573. that the church

  574. has to offer.

  575. And,

  576. look,

  577. we're not a,

  578. we're not a big church.

  579. You know,

  580. what matters

  581. is building

  582. and cultivating

  583. those kind

  584. of relationships.

  585. Knowing someone

  586. by name,

  587. not knowing them

  588. by a number.

  589. And I certainly hope

  590. big churches

  591. don't go by numbers.

  592. Right?

  593. I know,

  594. you're all laughing,

  595. right?

  596. How many of you guys

  597. have seen that,

  598. that show,

  599. Cheers?

  600. Right?

  601. You,

  602. you probably know

  603. the theme song.

  604. You want to know

  605. where everybody

  606. knows your name.

  607. Now,

  608. that's talking

  609. about a bar.

  610. Let's be honest here.

  611. That's probably

  612. how a church

  613. should be

  614. operating,

  615. though.

  616. The same concept,

  617. okay?

  618. So,

  619. I'll tell you,

  620. go listen to

  621. the Cheers theme song

  622. and think of a church.

  623. Okay?

  624. The notion of that,

  625. I think,

  626. is very powerful.

  627. Right?

  628. Where you know people

  629. and you have those,

  630. those kind of relationships.

  631. And so,

  632. I bring all of that

  633. kind of,

  634. as we,

  635. we now go into

  636. Christ being our peace,

  637. Christ tearing down

  638. the walls,

  639. let's go into

  640. the interpretation,

  641. then,

  642. of what we can,

  643. we've gone over

  644. the observation,

  645. what can we observe

  646. directly in the text

  647. and the interpretation,

  648. then,

  649. is what we can

  650. learn from this.

  651. The first thing,

  652. then,

  653. is that,

  654. let's read it together,

  655. church,

  656. peace begins with Christ,

  657. not with us,

  658. right?

  659. Christ does not

  660. merely teach peace,

  661. right?

  662. That's very important.

  663. There's a lot of people

  664. that teach peace,

  665. but we're talking about

  666. how Christ

  667. is our peace.

  668. It's a subtle difference,

  669. but it's a pretty

  670. significant difference here.

  671. And we think of how

  672. reconciliation,

  673. then,

  674. it flows from the cross.

  675. In other words,

  676. we have to factor in

  677. what Christ

  678. has done

  679. for us,

  680. not what we

  681. can do.

  682. We think about that

  683. when it comes

  684. to our salvation

  685. and how

  686. the Lord

  687. encourages us

  688. and equips us

  689. to do great things

  690. in his name.

  691. we think about

  692. how in these verses

  693. it was talking about

  694. these walls,

  695. these dividing walls

  696. of hostility.

  697. It didn't just say

  698. walls were being destroyed.

  699. It didn't say

  700. unifying walls

  701. were being destroyed.

  702. Unifying walls of love.

  703. It's talking about

  704. dividing walls

  705. of hostility

  706. being destroyed,

  707. being torn down.

  708. And that is why

  709. for 2025,

  710. we focus so much

  711. on building bridges

  712. with other people.

  713. These walls

  714. are being torn down

  715. of hostility

  716. when we are called

  717. to live and love

  718. like Christ.

  719. And when we think

  720. of peace then,

  721. well,

  722. it begins with Christ.

  723. True peace.

  724. peace comes from Christ.

  725. How many of you

  726. have met someone

  727. who,

  728. they were so

  729. peaceful

  730. and no matter

  731. what happened

  732. in their life,

  733. there was something

  734. about them.

  735. They had a peace,

  736. right?

  737. Scripture talks about

  738. the peace

  739. that surpasses

  740. all understanding.

  741. talk about peace

  742. there.

  743. I mean,

  744. when we think

  745. of peace,

  746. we think of

  747. peace and quiet,

  748. you know?

  749. Can I get a moment

  750. of peace away

  751. from the boss

  752. who's nagging

  753. on me

  754. or whatever,

  755. you know?

  756. Can I,

  757. it's too loud,

  758. these kids are

  759. rambunctious.

  760. Not that I've

  761. ever experienced

  762. that,

  763. you know?

  764. I admit,

  765. I'm human,

  766. I've got five kids

  767. and there's a lot

  768. more loud moments

  769. than quiet ones.

  770. And to be very honest,

  771. I get a little more

  772. freaked out

  773. when it's quiet

  774. than when it's loud,

  775. you know?

  776. So I gotta be careful

  777. what I ask for,

  778. right?

  779. But anyways,

  780. with this,

  781. as we receive

  782. this true peace

  783. from Christ,

  784. we are called

  785. to share

  786. in the peace

  787. of Christ

  788. with other people.

  789. The second thing

  790. then is

  791. peace

  792. forms.

  793. I have a typo there.

  794. It forms us

  795. or forms a us,

  796. right?

  797. It forms us

  798. individually

  799. and collectively,

  800. right?

  801. I'm human.

  802. I have,

  803. I put typos

  804. every so often.

  805. Were they intentional

  806. or not?

  807. I don't know.

  808. I'll have to find out.

  809. We think about this

  810. that

  811. God

  812. not only

  813. saves

  814. individual people,

  815. but he forms

  816. people groups,

  817. forming a people,

  818. the body of Christ,

  819. transforming

  820. marriages

  821. or relationships

  822. with

  823. mother and

  824. mother and father,

  825. mother and child,

  826. father.

  827. I mean,

  828. you can go on

  829. with families

  830. and these kind of things.

  831. It is God's desire

  832. to make all things new.

  833. It is God's desire

  834. to transform

  835. each and every one of us

  836. and it doesn't stop

  837. in the individual though.

  838. It continues

  839. with others.

  840. Think about it.

  841. If I'm the only

  842. Christian

  843. in

  844. a completely

  845. evil

  846. and worldly family,

  847. you don't think

  848. that how God

  849. is transforming me

  850. is going to affect

  851. my family

  852. and everyone

  853. that I know?

  854. That's the transforming

  855. power of God.

  856. It affects

  857. a multitude

  858. of people.

  859. And we think about that,

  860. God's desire

  861. to make all things new.

  862. Christ being

  863. the transformer

  864. of all of us.

  865. And it should be

  866. our desire

  867. to want to be

  868. molded by the Lord,

  869. to journey with Him.

  870. And

  871. we think

  872. about that.

  873. To think that

  874. we're no longer

  875. strangers

  876. but members

  877. of God's household,

  878. that's a very

  879. intimate kind of setting.

  880. thinking about

  881. how

  882. Christ being

  883. the cornerstone,

  884. right?

  885. This

  886. peace

  887. forms us.

  888. We are

  889. transformed

  890. as we are

  891. transformed.

  892. We are to

  893. transform

  894. by living

  895. and loving

  896. like Christ.

  897. Christ.

  898. It is not

  899. our power,

  900. but it is

  901. the power

  902. that comes

  903. through us

  904. from Christ.

  905. It's just

  906. like how

  907. many of you

  908. have seen,

  909. I think

  910. it's the mummy,

  911. Tim.

  912. It might be

  913. the mummy,

  914. where

  915. they're trying

  916. to light

  917. a very dark

  918. room

  919. and they

  920. get a mirror

  921. to shine

  922. the light

  923. of the sun

  924. and they get

  925. all these

  926. mirrors

  927. to keep

  928. reflecting

  929. and to

  930. light this

  931. entire

  932. dark

  933. room

  934. up.

  935. I think

  936. that's a

  937. really

  938. great

  939. imagery.

  940. Right?

  941. The mirror

  942. is not

  943. the sun.

  944. It is

  945. reflecting

  946. the sun

  947. though

  948. to light

  949. up that

  950. room.

  951. In a

  952. very similar

  953. way,

  954. we have

  955. the light

  956. of Christ

  957. and we

  958. are to

  959. reflect,

  960. radiate,

  961. share in

  962. that kind

  963. of light

  964. of Christ

  965. with other

  966. people.

  967. A couple

  968. questions I

  969. want you to

  970. think about.

  971. Have you

  972. ever thought

  973. of the

  974. church

  975. as a

  976. household?

  977. You've

  978. probably

  979. thought of

  980. the church

  981. as,

  982. well,

  983. this is

  984. the

  985. dwelling

  986. place of

  987. God,

  988. right?

  989. This is

  990. God's

  991. house.

  992. I know

  993. my parents

  994. used to

  995. tell me

  996. that all

  997. the time.

  998. You don't

  999. want to be

  1000. rambunctious

  1001. because this

  1002. is God's

  1003. house.

  1004. But have

  1005. you ever

  1006. thought of

  1007. the church

  1008. being part

  1009. of God's

  1010. household?

  1011. It's kind

  1012. of an

  1013. interesting

  1014. thought,

  1015. isn't it?

  1016. And then

  1017. the other

  1018. question is

  1019. how often

  1020. do we

  1021. try to

  1022. create peace

  1023. on our

  1024. own

  1025. when we

  1026. need that

  1027. peace that

  1028. surpasses

  1029. all

  1030. understanding?

  1031. The third

  1032. thing then

  1033. is peace

  1034. shapes us

  1035. as witnesses

  1036. and peacemakers.

  1037. That's

  1038. where we

  1039. had this

  1040. idea of

  1041. the

  1042. ministry

  1043. of

  1044. reconciliation,

  1045. right?

  1046. Where peace

  1047. is not

  1048. passive,

  1049. it moves

  1050. outward

  1051. towards

  1052. other

  1053. people.

  1054. Just as

  1055. we receive

  1056. the greatest

  1057. gift of

  1058. salvation,

  1059. why would

  1060. you not

  1061. want to

  1062. share that

  1063. with other

  1064. people?

  1065. I've

  1066. always been

  1067. so confused

  1068. by that.

  1069. Why would

  1070. you not

  1071. want to

  1072. tell everyone

  1073. what you

  1074. believe in?

  1075. why would

  1076. you not

  1077. want to

  1078. share how

  1079. God's

  1080. working in

  1081. your life?

  1082. Why would

  1083. you not

  1084. want to

  1085. share the

  1086. peace of

  1087. Christ or

  1088. share the

  1089. simple fact

  1090. that Christ

  1091. is your

  1092. peace?

  1093. It's a

  1094. call for

  1095. you to

  1096. share because

  1097. this kind

  1098. of peace

  1099. is an

  1100. active kind

  1101. of peace.

  1102. And I'm

  1103. reminded how

  1104. Christ calls

  1105. us to be

  1106. peacemakers

  1107. and not

  1108. peacekeepers.

  1109. We'll go

  1110. more into

  1111. that next

  1112. week.

  1113. Blessed

  1114. are the

  1115. peacemakers.

  1116. Very

  1117. interesting

  1118. when we

  1119. think about

  1120. the difference

  1121. between a

  1122. peacekeeper

  1123. and a

  1124. peacemaker.

  1125. So let's

  1126. keep that

  1127. in mind.

  1128. And so

  1129. in all of

  1130. this then

  1131. let us go

  1132. to our

  1133. application

  1134. then.

  1135. What do

  1136. we do

  1137. about this?

  1138. Right?

  1139. We have the

  1140. observation where

  1141. we read the

  1142. text.

  1143. we have

  1144. the

  1145. interpretation

  1146. is what

  1147. are the

  1148. underlying

  1149. lessons

  1150. here.

  1151. And the

  1152. application

  1153. then is

  1154. what we

  1155. do about

  1156. it.

  1157. You know,

  1158. it's very

  1159. important for

  1160. us to

  1161. go over

  1162. all of

  1163. these because

  1164. as we

  1165. learn,

  1166. as we

  1167. grow,

  1168. we need

  1169. to live

  1170. it out.

  1171. Right?

  1172. It's kind

  1173. of, I

  1174. always think

  1175. it's interesting

  1176. how, how

  1177. many of you

  1178. have ever

  1179. bought a

  1180. self-help

  1181. book before,

  1182. you can be

  1183. honest here,

  1184. right?

  1185. And they

  1186. always say

  1187. you need to

  1188. apply what

  1189. you've learned.

  1190. I mean, this

  1191. can apply to

  1192. life skills

  1193. or training

  1194. or whatever

  1195. it is.

  1196. It doesn't have

  1197. to be just

  1198. self-help.

  1199. It can be

  1200. any sort

  1201. of thing.

  1202. You have

  1203. to apply

  1204. the skills

  1205. that you

  1206. learn.

  1207. That's no

  1208. different than

  1209. when it

  1210. comes to

  1211. scripture.

  1212. When we

  1213. read the

  1214. text and

  1215. we learn

  1216. the lessons,

  1217. we have

  1218. to apply

  1219. it to

  1220. our very

  1221. lives.

  1222. And so

  1223. we have

  1224. the question

  1225. then,

  1226. how should

  1227. we live,

  1228. right?

  1229. The first

  1230. thing is,

  1231. I've used

  1232. this in

  1233. connection

  1234. with this

  1235. idea of

  1236. bridge

  1237. building,

  1238. is to

  1239. stand on

  1240. the bridge.

  1241. Remember

  1242. God's

  1243. help.

  1244. Now, I

  1245. want you to

  1246. think of

  1247. a bridge

  1248. just like

  1249. how the

  1250. text is

  1251. talking about

  1252. the dividing

  1253. wall of

  1254. hostility being

  1255. gone.

  1256. Think of

  1257. the image

  1258. of a

  1259. bridge

  1260. to God.

  1261. That you

  1262. now have

  1263. that access.

  1264. And so,

  1265. as you

  1266. stand on

  1267. the bridge

  1268. or as

  1269. you're

  1270. journeying

  1271. in the

  1272. bridge,

  1273. remember

  1274. God's

  1275. help.

  1276. Know that

  1277. God has

  1278. been there

  1279. for you.

  1280. Right?

  1281. That he's

  1282. calling for

  1283. each and

  1284. every one

  1285. of you

  1286. into a

  1287. relationship

  1288. with him.

  1289. And maybe

  1290. it's a

  1291. possibility

  1292. for you

  1293. to think

  1294. of one

  1295. way that

  1296. God has

  1297. brought you

  1298. near to

  1299. him.

  1300. Think of

  1301. that.

  1302. God is

  1303. with us.

  1304. He's

  1305. calling for

  1306. you to

  1307. draw near

  1308. to him.

  1309. Maybe you

  1310. can reflect

  1311. on one

  1312. instance

  1313. that God

  1314. has brought

  1315. you near.

  1316. And I

  1317. also encourage

  1318. for you

  1319. to thank

  1320. God

  1321. intentionally

  1322. for his

  1323. faithfulness.

  1324. God

  1325. doesn't

  1326. give up

  1327. on us.

  1328. Now,

  1329. nobody

  1330. here has

  1331. to raise

  1332. their hand,

  1333. but it's

  1334. the most

  1335. disheartening

  1336. thing when

  1337. someone gives

  1338. up on

  1339. someone,

  1340. right?

  1341. Very

  1342. disheartening.

  1343. But when

  1344. it comes

  1345. to God,

  1346. he is

  1347. beyond our

  1348. human

  1349. understanding

  1350. and our

  1351. human

  1352. reasoning.

  1353. God

  1354. doesn't

  1355. abandon

  1356. us.

  1357. He's

  1358. always there

  1359. for us.

  1360. when we

  1361. read so

  1362. much

  1363. scripture

  1364. talking

  1365. about

  1366. the

  1367. Lord

  1368. being

  1369. patient,

  1370. kind,

  1371. and

  1372. merciful,

  1373. how the

  1374. Lord is

  1375. faithful.

  1376. We should

  1377. thank God

  1378. for that.

  1379. Just say,

  1380. Lord God,

  1381. I'm glad

  1382. you're

  1383. faithful in

  1384. my life.

  1385. And you're

  1386. the same

  1387. yesterday,

  1388. today,

  1389. and forever.

  1390. And maybe

  1391. this is a

  1392. call for you

  1393. to share

  1394. in one

  1395. story of

  1396. God's

  1397. faithfulness.

  1398. The second

  1399. thing,

  1400. then,

  1401. is to

  1402. cross the

  1403. bridge

  1404. trusting in

  1405. God,

  1406. right?

  1407. Be on

  1408. this

  1409. journey

  1410. in the

  1411. Lord.

  1412. You can

  1413. think of

  1414. the imagery

  1415. of a

  1416. bridge,

  1417. you can

  1418. think of

  1419. just

  1420. journeying

  1421. in life,

  1422. right?

  1423. You can

  1424. think of

  1425. sheep going

  1426. to green

  1427. pastures

  1428. with the

  1429. shepherd,

  1430. you can

  1431. think of

  1432. many

  1433. different

  1434. types of

  1435. imagery

  1436. about

  1437. journeying

  1438. with the

  1439. Lord.

  1440. And I

  1441. always love

  1442. going back

  1443. to the

  1444. Psalms,

  1445. where it

  1446. says,

  1447. even though

  1448. I walk

  1449. through the

  1450. valley of

  1451. the shadow

  1452. of death,

  1453. I will

  1454. fear no

  1455. evil.

  1456. Why?

  1457. Because he

  1458. trusts that

  1459. God is

  1460. with him.

  1461. That's some

  1462. amazing

  1463. faith.

  1464. faith.

  1465. When you

  1466. read that,

  1467. that should

  1468. give you

  1469. great comfort.

  1470. I mean,

  1471. that's a

  1472. lot of

  1473. trust in

  1474. the Lord.

  1475. So I

  1476. want you

  1477. to think

  1478. about one

  1479. relationship

  1480. or friendship.

  1481. How can

  1482. you represent

  1483. Christ with

  1484. a friend?

  1485. Maybe it's

  1486. a friend that

  1487. has been

  1488. marked by

  1489. tension or

  1490. distance.

  1491. How can

  1492. you represent

  1493. Christ with

  1494. others?

  1495. And you

  1496. can also,

  1497. as you

  1498. cross the

  1499. bridge,

  1500. trust that

  1501. the Lord

  1502. knows what

  1503. he's doing.

  1504. Trust in

  1505. him.

  1506. Take one

  1507. step,

  1508. right?

  1509. I love

  1510. that Christmas,

  1511. there's a

  1512. Christmas movie,

  1513. it's the

  1514. clay animation

  1515. kind of thing,

  1516. where it's,

  1517. you may know

  1518. the song,

  1519. put one foot

  1520. in front of

  1521. the other.

  1522. Do you

  1523. guys know

  1524. that song?

  1525. It's the,

  1526. what is it,

  1527. the abominable

  1528. snowman?

  1529. Right?

  1530. He's trying to

  1531. walk and

  1532. he's just a

  1533. big scary

  1534. monster,

  1535. but he learns

  1536. how to

  1537. walk,

  1538. right?

  1539. But I

  1540. love that.

  1541. You put

  1542. one foot

  1543. in front

  1544. of the

  1545. other.

  1546. I think,

  1547. I know

  1548. that's not

  1549. the heart

  1550. of that

  1551. movie,

  1552. but just

  1553. like how,

  1554. you know,

  1555. going where

  1556. everyone knows

  1557. your name is

  1558. not the

  1559. heart of

  1560. Cheers,

  1561. but we can

  1562. take little

  1563. pieces of it

  1564. nonetheless.

  1565. us.

  1566. And so,

  1567. take one

  1568. step towards

  1569. peace,

  1570. conversation,

  1571. prayer,

  1572. invitation,

  1573. even forgiveness.

  1574. And the

  1575. third thing

  1576. then,

  1577. is to be a

  1578. peacemaker

  1579. with Christ

  1580. beside you.

  1581. And I want

  1582. you to think

  1583. about one

  1584. way that

  1585. you can be

  1586. a peacemaker

  1587. and you'll

  1588. see there's

  1589. a connection

  1590. with being

  1591. a peacemaker

  1592. and a

  1593. bridge builder.

  1594. Prayer and

  1595. discipleship,

  1596. hospitality and

  1597. welcome,

  1598. community

  1599. partnership,

  1600. there's many

  1601. ways,

  1602. but in

  1603. any sense,

  1604. let this

  1605. be a call

  1606. for you

  1607. to faithfully

  1608. step forward

  1609. to be a

  1610. peacemaker

  1611. with Christ

  1612. by your

  1613. side.

  1614. And in

  1615. closing,

  1616. I want to

  1617. take to

  1618. this next

  1619. slide here.

  1620. You know,

  1621. we sang that

  1622. song,

  1623. Come Thou

  1624. Fount,

  1625. and there's

  1626. this verse

  1627. here,

  1628. which I

  1629. think is

  1630. such a

  1631. strange verse,

  1632. right?

  1633. Thus far

  1634. the Lord

  1635. has helped

  1636. us.

  1637. It's kind

  1638. of like,

  1639. well,

  1640. God has

  1641. helped us

  1642. so far,

  1643. right,

  1644. kind of

  1645. thing.

  1646. Well,

  1647. and first,

  1648. and we're not

  1649. going to turn

  1650. there,

  1651. but in

  1652. 1 Samuel

    1 Samuel 7 chapter mention

  1653. chapter 7,

  1654. God is

  1655. giving the

  1656. people of

  1657. God

  1658. victory.

  1659. And it's

  1660. in this

  1661. moment in

  1662. victory where

  1663. they're saying,

  1664. God has

  1665. helped us

  1666. so far,

  1667. and because

  1668. of this,

  1669. I'm going

  1670. to raise

  1671. up an

  1672. Ebenezer

  1673. stone.

  1674. And so I

  1675. put this as

  1676. kind of a

  1677. representation.

  1678. I have no

  1679. idea what it

  1680. looked like,

  1681. okay?

  1682. But in

  1683. this,

  1684. this stone

  1685. was a

  1686. representation,

  1687. it was a

  1688. remembrance

  1689. of marking

  1690. what God

  1691. had done

  1692. for the

  1693. people.

  1694. Not only

  1695. was it a

  1696. sense of

  1697. remembrance

  1698. though,

  1699. but it was

  1700. also the

  1701. people of

  1702. God

  1703. trusting

  1704. in the

  1705. Lord for

  1706. what he

  1707. would do

  1708. next.

  1709. It's a

  1710. moment in

  1711. time.

  1712. And so

  1713. when we

  1714. think of

  1715. that hymn,

  1716. Come Thou

  1717. Fount,

  1718. we think

  1719. of that

  1720. lyric,

  1721. Here I

  1722. raise my

  1723. Ebenezer,

  1724. right?

  1725. It's raising

  1726. that stone

  1727. in victory

  1728. and continuing

  1729. to trust

  1730. in God.

  1731. And I

  1732. think about

  1733. that,

  1734. it's such

  1735. an unusual

  1736. wording for

  1737. a lyric of

  1738. a hymn,

  1739. but it's

  1740. actually

  1741. beautifully

  1742. tied in

  1743. with

  1744. scripture

  1745. and tied

  1746. in with

  1747. where we

  1748. are at,

  1749. not only

  1750. in Ephesians,

  1751. but where

  1752. we are

  1753. today at

  1754. the end

  1755. of 2025.

  1756. That in

  1757. the same

  1758. way that

  1759. the people

  1760. of God

  1761. raised up

  1762. their stone,

  1763. knowing what

  1764. God had

  1765. done,

  1766. they were

  1767. going to

  1768. continue to

  1769. trust in

  1770. him,

  1771. not knowing

  1772. what

  1773. tomorrow

  1774. was going

  1775. to hold.

  1776. And I

  1777. think about

  1778. that.

  1779. 2025 is

  1780. coming to

  1781. a close

  1782. and we're

  1783. going to

  1784. enter in

  1785. 2026.

  1786. And quite

  1787. frankly,

  1788. we have no

  1789. idea what

  1790. that year is

  1791. going to be

  1792. like.

  1793. And that

  1794. can be

  1795. very

  1796. disheartening,

  1797. it can be

  1798. encouraging,

  1799. who knows.

  1800. But let's

  1801. not worry

  1802. about tomorrow

  1803. just as

  1804. Christ has

  1805. told us

  1806. not to

  1807. worry about

  1808. tomorrow.

  1809. let us

  1810. put

  1811. 2026

  1812. into the

  1813. hands of

  1814. God,

  1815. trusting in

  1816. him,

  1817. just as

  1818. God

  1819. knows

  1820. what he

  1821. is doing.

  1822. So let us

  1823. look back on

  1824. God's

  1825. faithfulness

  1826. and let us

  1827. step forward

  1828. into this

  1829. new year

  1830. much as

  1831. we cross

  1832. the bridge,

  1833. much as

  1834. we know

  1835. that Christ

  1836. is our

  1837. peace,

  1838. may we

  1839. step boldly

  1840. in faith.

  1841. Let us

  1842. pray together.

  1843. And

  1844. Father God,

  1845. we thank

  1846. you for

  1847. this time

  1848. and this

  1849. opportunity

  1850. for us

  1851. to go

  1852. through

  1853. these

  1854. verses

  1855. in

  1856. Ephesians,

  1857. learning a

  1858. little bit

  1859. about

  1860. the

  1861. Ebenezer

  1862. stone,

  1863. but also

  1864. importantly,

  1865. knowing about

  1866. how your

  1867. son Christ

  1868. is our

  1869. peace and

  1870. how we

  1871. are to

  1872. receive this

  1873. peace and

  1874. to share

  1875. this peace.

  1876. The language,

  1877. Father,

  1878. of removing

  1879. the wall,

  1880. the dividing

  1881. wall of

  1882. hostility,

  1883. just goes to

  1884. show us

  1885. the love

  1886. that you

  1887. have for

  1888. each and

  1889. every one

  1890. of us.

  1891. I pray

  1892. for every

  1893. person here

  1894. today in

  1895. person and

  1896. every person

  1897. who is

  1898. watching online,

  1899. whether it's

  1900. YouTube,

  1901. TikTok,

  1902. Rumble,

  1903. Facebook,

  1904. or whether

  1905. they're listening

  1906. online to

  1907. the sermon

  1908. podcast.

  1909. Christ,

  1910. I pray

  1911. that everyone

  1912. will know

  1913. that they

  1914. are loved

  1915. by you

  1916. and they

  1917. are called

  1918. to receive

  1919. salvation.

  1920. They are

  1921. called into

  1922. transformation

  1923. and they

  1924. are called

  1925. to live

  1926. and love

  1927. like you.

  1928. We love

  1929. you so much

  1930. and we

  1931. know that

  1932. this is our

  1933. last Sunday

  1934. in 2025.

  1935. May we

  1936. take these

  1937. last few

  1938. days in

  1939. the remainder

  1940. of the year

  1941. seeking you

  1942. and

  1943. may we

  1944. trust in

  1945. you to

  1946. lead and

  1947. guide us

  1948. into next

  1949. year.

  1950. It is in

  1951. the name

  1952. of Jesus

  1953. that we

  1954. pray and

  1955. we all

  1956. say together.

  1957. Amen,

  1958. church.

  1959. Amen.

  1960. Thank you

  1961. for joining

  1962. us for this

  1963. message from

  1964. Ontario Community

  1965. Church.

  1966. As we

  1967. close out

  1968. this sermon

  1969. and close

  1970. out this

  1971. year,

  1972. I want to

  1973. leave you

  1974. with this.

  1975. Jesus

  1976. Christ is

  1977. our peace.

  1978. He has

  1979. broken down

  1980. the dividing

  1981. wall of

  1982. hostility

  1983. through the

  1984. cross.

  1985. Those who

  1986. were far

  1987. off have

  1988. been brought

  1989. near.

  1990. We are

  1991. no longer

  1992. strangers,

  1993. but we

  1994. are welcomed.

  1995. We are

  1996. members of

  1997. God's

  1998. household,

  1999. being built

  2000. together into

  2001. a dwelling

  2002. place for

  2003. God by

  2004. the Spirit.

  2005. And we

  2006. are standing

  2007. on a bridge

  2008. between

  2009. 2025 and

  2010. 2026.

  2011. As we

  2012. look back,

  2013. let us

  2014. raise our

  2015. Ebenezer

  2016. stone and

  2017. say with

  2018. Samuel,

  2019. thus far,

  2020. the Lord

  2021. has helped

  2022. us.

  2023. God has

  2024. been faithful,

  2025. but that

  2026. stone isn't

  2027. just about

  2028. the past.

  2029. It's about

  2030. continue trusting

  2031. God for

  2032. what's ahead.

  2033. And here's

  2034. the truth.

  2035. We have no

  2036. idea what

  2037. next year will

  2038. bring.

  2039. that can

  2040. make us

  2041. feel anxious

  2042. or uncertain

  2043. or we

  2044. may not

  2045. know even

  2046. what we

  2047. feel.

  2048. But Jesus

  2049. tells us

  2050. to not

  2051. worry about

  2052. tomorrow.

  2053. Let us

  2054. put this

  2055. new year

  2056. into the

  2057. hands of

  2058. God,

  2059. trusting in

  2060. Him because

  2061. He knows

  2062. what He

  2063. is doing.

  2064. You can

  2065. find all

  2066. of today's

  2067. resources at

  2068. OntarioCommunityChurch.org

  2069. including

  2070. congregational

  2071. notes,

  2072. Bible studies,

  2073. sermon slides,

  2074. and interactive

  2075. readings.

  2076. We're also

  2077. on YouTube,

  2078. Rumble,

  2079. Facebook,

  2080. or wherever

  2081. you listen

  2082. to your

  2083. podcasts.

  2084. May the

  2085. Lord bless

  2086. you and

  2087. keep you.

  2088. May the

  2089. Lord make

  2090. His face

  2091. shine upon

  2092. you and

  2093. be gracious

  2094. to you.

  2095. May the

  2096. Lord lift

  2097. up His

  2098. countenance

  2099. upon you

  2100. and give

  2101. you peace.

  2102. As we

  2103. step boldly

  2104. into 2026,

  2105. may we live

  2106. and love

  2107. like Christ.

  2108. Christ is

  2109. our peace,

  2110. and may we

  2111. cross bridges

  2112. with confidence

  2113. because Jesus

  2114. first built

  2115. the bridge

  2116. to us.

  2117. May you

  2118. have a

  2119. happy new

  2120. year,

  2121. friends,

  2122. and may

  2123. God bless

  2124. you in

  2125. 2026.

  2126. Bye-bye.

  2127. God bless

  2128. Thank you.

  2129. Thank you.

  2130. Thank you.

  2131. Thank you.
