  1. Well, good morning, everyone. How are we doing this morning? We all awake? Oh, that's good.

  2. Today, we are continuing our sermon series through the book of Revelation.

  3. And I got to tell you, this has been by far the most challenging, but the most rewarding sermon series that I've ever done.

  4. I've read Revelation many times, and I got to tell you, it is a lot, right?

  5. How many of you have read Revelation, and you're like, I don't know what in the world's going on.

  6. And then there's different sides and different opinions arguing to and fro about this book.

  7. And what's really unfortunate is that how Revelation is viewed upon as such a scary book.

  8. But in reality, Revelation is a book about hope. It is a book about God making all things new.

  9. Yes, there's the final judgment. There are so many apocalyptic language that's being used in this text.

  10. But through the end comes the beginning. Through death and destruction and judgment comes new life.

  11. And it's so interesting how when we talk about things such as heaven, in Revelation, we have the new heaven and the new earth.

  12. We have this kind of language that is so connected within the Old Testament.

  13. And it's really remarkable the more that we begin to read and study together this fascinating book.

  14. It can be confusing, and it certainly can be heavy.

  15. But Lord willing, we're going to open the text together, and we're just going to go through it.

  16. This last week, we began in Revelation chapter 6.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  17. If you guys want to get ahead and go ahead and turn there, that's fine.

  18. And Revelation chapter 6 has been a very heavy and very difficult passage where we have this judgment kind of language.

    Revelation 6 chapter mention

  19. The seven seals, right? And the seals are being opened.

  20. But as we're turning there, I want us to keep in mind something.

  21. As we've been going through Revelation, there are certain key points for us to remember.

  22. The first is that God is in control. Amen?

  23. That is the most important thing.

  24. We don't need to fear the four horsemen.

  25. We need to be in relationship with the Lamb.

  26. Just like when we sing the song,

  27. Worthy is the Lamb who was slain.

  28. Very powerful lyric, right?

  29. We sing that in many worship songs, many songs that's out there.

  30. Worthy is the Lamb that was slain, that is worthy to open the scroll, right?

  31. The scroll that is found through Daniel.

  32. The scroll that is prophesied about.

  33. And now we have this scene where it is the opening of the scroll, the breaking of the seven seals.

  34. When we think about it, this last week it was the four horsemen.

  35. And that very metal kind of imagery, right?

  36. How many of you have gone on Google or you've seen an image of the four horsemen and it's the most, let's be honest, kind of dark and scary kind of image, right?

  37. And it's a very powerful image at that.

  38. Don't get me wrong.

  39. But for some people, they're like, I don't know about that.

  40. At the other, got the other side of the coin where it's like, yeah, that's awesome, man.

  41. There's got some judgment going on here.

  42. With all of that, it's important for us to recognize we need to know the Lord.

  43. And we don't need to fear the final judgment.

  44. You have to know Jesus Christ being the way, the truth, and the life.

  45. You know, life is beautiful.

  46. From the time that we are born into this earth, holding a newborn baby is something that is remarkable.

  47. Some of you parents, you remember when you held a newborn child.

  48. And some of you grandparents, you may remember your son or your daughter or your grandchildren, right?

  49. And how precious that life is.

  50. And it's so incredible when Scripture talks about how God knew us before we were born.

  51. How God knit us together.

  52. And how, well, essentially, when we are born into this earth, we have a certain number of days.

  53. Our entire life, Scripture talks about that we are amidst.

  54. Amist.

  55. And yet, in all of that, every day, every breath is a gift from God.

  56. Not only this, our gifts and our abilities, our potential, all comes from the Lord.

  57. And we have to think of how God gives each and every one of us, every single day, an opportunity for us to know Jesus Christ.

  58. An opportunity for us to go from darkness into light.

  59. I love how throughout Scripture, how many of you guys have been boating, whether it's on the ocean or on the lake, right?

  60. And we know how windy and how stormy waters can be, right?

  61. When you're getting tossed to and fro in the boat.

  62. Do you realize that the sea is a representation throughout Scripture as chaos and sin and disorder and dysfunctionality?

  63. Just like how Christ, when He goes out into the boat and He says,

  64. Peace, be still.

  65. Showing not only that Christ controls the water, but He will bring calm to the chaos.

  66. It's such a powerful kind of imagery that we think about.

  67. And so, in all of this, for many of us, we come from this chaotic world.

  68. Where we are in the sea, as it were, right?

  69. Getting tossed to and fro in the boat.

  70. Wondering what in the world.

  71. When is this storm going to be over?

  72. And it's a call for all of us to know Jesus Christ who can bring peace to our life.

  73. Give us calm.

  74. Give us clarity.

  75. Give us consistency.

  76. Give us truth.

  77. Especially in the world that we live in.

  78. Don't we live in the kind of world where people say there is no such thing as truth?

  79. Don't we live in a world where people say darkness is light?

  80. What are you talking about?

  81. We know, we should know, Jesus Christ being the way, the truth, and the life.

  82. The light for all of us to come to.

  83. It's important for us to recognize that from the time that we are born,

  84. God calls all of us into relationship by extending grace before us.

  85. It is this invitation for us to respond.

  86. And we are given time, but not forever.

  87. How many of you have been invited to a birthday party or a wedding invitation, right?

  88. We all know that you got to RSVP within 30 days.

  89. You got to RSVP within two weeks.

  90. I mean, depending upon the organization of the person putting together the party,

  91. you've got to respond.

  92. You've got to RSVP.

  93. And in the same way, that's how it works with God inviting you into salvation.

  94. Will you respond with a resounding yes or no?

  95. We are given time, but not forever.

  96. That's like how it is in any birthday party, right?

  97. My birthday is in 10 days.

  98. Are you going to come to the party or not, right?

  99. Not on the 12th day.

  100. My birthday has already passed, right?

  101. You think of these kind of things and how God gives us this invitation.

  102. And to know God is to respond to him.

  103. It is to say yes to Jesus Christ.

  104. And it is also recognizing that God is going to transform your life.

  105. He is going to change the very fabric of who you are, being born again, becoming a new creation.

  106. And as we're going to go over in the text, being given these white robes.

  107. I'm not saying my jacket is white robes in any sense here.

  108. But to be given new clothing, right?

  109. Not only are we a new creation when we are saved by grace through faith,

  110. but in this revelation kind of language, we'll see this type of new clothing

  111. and how God cares for those that love him.

  112. When we think of us coming to know Jesus Christ,

  113. how wonderful is it that we can come together,

  114. that we can worship Jesus Christ,

  115. that we can sing these songs.

  116. And I love how the scripture says, make a joyful noise.

  117. It doesn't say make a joyful production.

  118. Thank God, right?

  119. We sing songs.

  120. We praise the living God.

  121. And look, you can be out of tune.

  122. That's all right.

  123. You don't have to sing.

  124. But as long as you're worshiping God, that is what matters, right?

  125. And the fact that we can come together,

  126. we can open the word of God

  127. when there are other places in the world that do not have access to scripture.

  128. There are other places in the world that cannot sing songs to worship the Lord.

  129. Some of us may know about the persecuted church,

  130. the global church, and how Christianity is outlawed,

  131. how it is difficult.

  132. Now, granted, we may say it's difficult to be a Christian in America.

  133. I understand that.

  134. But it's very different when you look around the world.

  135. And so important for us that throughout scripture,

  136. throughout the history of Christianity,

  137. we have found that there have been people

  138. that have been persecuted for their faith.

  139. There have been people that have been martyred for their faith.

  140. And I got to tell you, as we're going into the text today,

  141. this is going to speak to those who have died.

  142. Those who have been martyred.

  143. It's some easy reading, isn't it?

  144. It's going to be some very more heavy language in here.

  145. And so to know God is to respond to him.

  146. To know him is to be held and care for

  147. and provided for and given everlasting life.

  148. And it's important for us to know that as we live here on the earth,

  149. when we are saved by grace through faith,

  150. we are in preparation for the new heaven and the new earth.

  151. For us to dwell in the presence of the Lord.

  152. What happens, unfortunately,

  153. is many times there are Christians who are persecuted for their faith.

  154. There are those that die for the word,

  155. those that die for the cause of Christ.

  156. And these people are remembered.

  157. Let's turn there.

  158. I want us to go into the text here.

  159. My slides are out of order, and that's okay.

  160. It is...

  161. It's going to be on page 1,222 in your ESVP Bibles.

  162. It's Revelation 6, verses 9 through 17.

    Revelation 6:9–17

  163. And let's read it together, church.

  164. Are we all there?

  165. Feel free to read along out loud or listen,

  166. or even in your own Bible of choice.

  167. We do use the ESVP Bible.

  168. It's those blue Bibles in here.

  169. So it says in verse 9,

  170. When he opened the fifth seal,

  171. I saw under the altar the what?

  172. The souls of those who had been what?

  173. Slain for the word of God.

  174. And for the witness they bore.

  175. They cried out with the loud voice.

  176. Let's say it together.

  177. O sovereign Lord, holy and true,

  178. how long before you judge

  179. and avenge our blood on those who dwell on the earth?

  180. What a question, right?

  181. Verse 11,

  182. Then they were each given what?

  183. A white robe,

  184. and told to rest how long?

  185. A little longer,

  186. until the number of their fellow servants

  187. and their brothers should be complete,

  188. who were to be killed as they themselves had been.

  189. That is not an easy thing to read, right?

  190. Let's be honest here.

  191. Verse 12,

  192. When he opened the sixth seal,

  193. I looked,

  194. and behold,

  195. there was what?

  196. A great earthquake.

  197. And the sun became black as sackcloth,

  198. and the full moon became like blood.

  199. And the stars of the sky fell to the earth

  200. as the,

  201. this is interesting,

  202. as the fig tree

  203. sheds its winter fruit

  204. when shaken by a gale.

  205. Verse 14,

  206. The sky vanished like a scroll

  207. that is being rolled up,

  208. and every mountain and island

  209. was removed from its place.

  210. Then the kings of the earth,

  211. and the great ones,

  212. and the generals,

  213. and the rich,

  214. and the powerful,

  215. and everyone.

  216. Okay,

  217. so it's listing those that were in power,

  218. and then everybody,

  219. slave and free.

  220. What did they do?

  221. They hid themselves in the caves,

  222. and among the rocks of the mountains.

  223. Calling to the mountains and rocks,

  224. what did they say?

  225. Fall on us.

  226. Fall on us,

  227. and hide us from the face of him

  228. who is seated on the throne,

  229. and from the wrath of the Lamb.

  230. For the great day of their wrath has come,

  231. who can stand?

  232. Whoa.

  233. What is going on here, right?

  234. So the main thing that we have to take away from here

  235. is that the martyrs are crying,

  236. and God answers.

  237. That is very important for us.

  238. Throughout Scripture,

  239. there's a question that gets asked all the time,

  240. and people in the everyday world ask this question.

  241. Why does it seem like evil people do well?

  242. Right?

  243. It's a fundamental question that gets asked all the time.

  244. I see those rich and these wicked people.

  245. They seem to have everything together.

  246. Right?

  247. It's a question that's asked in Psalms.

  248. It's a question that's asked throughout so much of Scripture.

  249. In other words,

  250. you may be familiar with the saying,

  251. why do the wicked prosper?

  252. Right?

  253. As some mentions in Psalms here.

  254. And in that,

  255. we find those that are following the Lord,

  256. those that are following God and His path and His ways,

  257. and they may find,

  258. you may even find,

  259. that there's struggles that happen within life.

  260. And you turn and you think,

  261. these bad people appear to be doing good,

  262. but yet I'm following the Lord,

  263. and there's these struggles.

  264. And it's important for us,

  265. and this is not just in Revelation,

  266. but throughout all of Scripture,

  267. that wicked evildoers,

  268. it appears that they're doing well.

  269. But on the inside,

  270. they're not.

  271. On the inside,

  272. they may have

  273. this sense of emptiness,

  274. a hole or a void that they cannot fill.

  275. I mentioned it before,

  276. and I'll mention it again.

  277. And when you search the things of this world,

  278. there's many things that the world has to offer.

  279. Fame, notoriety, right?

  280. There's casinos everywhere.

  281. There's all kinds of things that the world has to offer.

  282. And when you pursue those things,

  283. do you find a life of fulfillment and happiness?

  284. A life where you can say,

  285. you know, I've gambled all my life,

  286. and I have everything I could have ever wanted.

  287. I don't think that's a statement that's,

  288. I don't know anyone that has gambled

  289. and has said that, right?

  290. In fact, my father would tell me a story

  291. about someone that he knew very dearly

  292. who was an alcoholic

  293. and would tell me that

  294. the very look,

  295. the very taste on his tongue,

  296. every time he smelt alcohol,

  297. it would give him this high, so to speak.

  298. And how sad that happens,

  299. that there comes a point

  300. when you think of addiction and whatnot,

  301. it's not the person drinking the bottle,

  302. it's the bottle drinking the person,

  303. getting used and consumed.

  304. And it's very unfortunate

  305. when these things kind of happen.

  306. And so in this,

  307. we have to realize and to recognize here,

  308. there are struggles that happen in the earth.

  309. The people that are wicked and evildoers,

  310. it looks like they're doing well,

  311. but yet there's a sense of emptiness,

  312. a hole and a void they cannot fill on their own.

  313. And then you have the good that are struggling.

  314. Those that know the Lord, right?

  315. I'm following the ways in the Lord,

  316. and yet I'm struggling.

  317. I don't understand why.

  318. And then to top it off,

  319. you have people that are killed,

  320. those that are martyred.

  321. You have people that are crying out,

  322. why, God?

  323. Why are you letting this injustice happen?

  324. And it's important for us to recognize

  325. that God works in his own timing.

  326. When we think of God and his mind,

  327. his ways being higher than our own,

  328. we have our own human understanding, right?

  329. And I gotta tell you,

  330. I'm glad I am not a judge.

  331. I'm glad I'm not a lawyer.

  332. Because I am a human being,

  333. and I am imperfect

  334. when it comes to these kind of things.

  335. I have my own human tendencies

  336. and my own human biases.

  337. But when it comes to God,

  338. whose ways that are higher than ours,

  339. his justice, his timing,

  340. is certainly beyond our understanding.

  341. And that's very difficult.

  342. That is not an easy thing to talk about.

  343. That is not an easy thing to preach on.

  344. That is why it's so important for us

  345. to wait upon the Lord

  346. for his divine timing

  347. and understand that he will have the final say.

  348. And so in this, right,

  349. the martyrs are crying.

  350. God answers by providing them a white robe.

  351. What beautiful language.

  352. That even when wicked people

  353. think they have the final say,

  354. they certainly do not.

  355. It is God who has the final say.

  356. It is God who makes all things new.

  357. It is God who restores the broken.

  358. It is God who does the healing and transformation.

  359. That is very comforting.

  360. Now, sometimes it's hard for us

  361. to see it like that

  362. because we see only a portion,

  363. a piece of what is happening here on the earth.

  364. But let us recognize,

  365. when we talk about this judgment kind of language,

  366. a day that no one can stand,

  367. it's showing the power and the glory of God

  368. being so powerful that no one can stand it, right?

  369. It's being in the sense of an awe

  370. and of wonder in this.

  371. And it's interesting that it is connected here

  372. and this is some harder language.

  373. In Psalm 79, verses 10 through 13,

    Psalms 79:10–13

  374. let the avenging of the outpoured blood

  375. of your servants be known among the nations.

  376. There have been people that have died

  377. for the cause of Christ

  378. and God recognizes that, right?

  379. The cries of the saints

  380. has been across the centuries

  381. and it's the same cry that we see beneath the altar.

  382. If you notice,

  383. when it says in the text,

  384. in verse 9,

  385. opening the fifth seal,

  386. I saw under the altar

  387. the souls of those

  388. who had been slain for the word of God.

  389. So it's saying here in this kind of language

  390. that the souls are under the altar, right?

  391. Now, when we're looking at this apocalyptic type of language,

  392. it's very similar to what you find

  393. in the old Jewish temples, right?

  394. The old sacrificial system.

  395. There's a lot of connections within there.

  396. We had talked about previously in Revelation,

  397. the golden bowls,

  398. our prayers being offered as incense.

  399. And here we're seeing this scene

  400. where the souls under the altar

  401. is a representation of the protection

  402. and the provision of God.

  403. that not only are you protected and provided for,

  404. but God is going to restore you

  405. and make all things new.

  406. That language of receiving a white robe then

  407. is knowing it's a place of reward

  408. and it's a place of honor.

  409. You think about that.

  410. Well,

  411. to know that I'm going to be protected by the Lord

  412. is a remarkable thing.

  413. And for those that have perished,

  414. those that have passed away,

  415. that know the Lord and have been martyred,

  416. it's very, very beautiful language.

  417. And it is hard for us to understand.

  418. I can understand that.

  419. And so I mentioned about the prayers of the saints

  420. rising as incense from the golden bowls,

  421. the souls of the martyrs resting beneath the altars.

  422. And it's interesting,

  423. in Leviticus 7,

  424. the priest would place in the sacrificial system

  425. the blood, right?

  426. The blood of the horns of the incense altar,

  427. it was poured at the base of the altar

  428. as part of a sacrifice.

  429. And so in the same way,

  430. it's kind of difficult for us

  431. because we're not partaking in the sacrificial system.

  432. But it's blood that is spilt out.

  433. It's not being,

  434. you're not bleeding in vain, so to speak.

  435. It's you're being regarded.

  436. Even though evil has happened,

  437. you are being taken care of.

  438. You're being revered by the Lord.

  439. And so in this,

  440. what can we observe in here, right?

  441. The souls under the altar.

  442. The second thing is that creation shakes here.

  443. Oh, one second.

  444. The souls under the altar,

  445. another thing that's very interesting,

  446. is the martyrs.

  447. Martyrs, the language in that,

  448. talks about those that witnessed.

  449. Witnesses, or those that gave testimony.

  450. That's actually, it comes from

  451. martyria, if I pronounce that correctly.

  452. That's where we get the word martyr from.

  453. It is those who testified with their words,

  454. the testimony,

  455. with their blood.

  456. So that's kind of interesting.

  457. That's where we get the word martyr from.

  458. And so,

  459. them crying out,

  460. how long?

  461. It's connected with,

  462. and I've mentioned this parable quite a few times,

  463. is the parable of the persistent widow.

  464. I've told you about the judge,

  465. the wicked judge who didn't fear God,

  466. nor respected man.

  467. I don't want to know a judge like that, right?

  468. And this widow is crying out for justice.

  469. And eventually the judge gives justice.

  470. And the whole point of that parable

  471. is when Jesus says,

  472. how much more will God give justice

  473. to the ones that he love,

  474. as opposed to a human

  475. who doesn't revere God

  476. and doesn't respect man.

  477. It's going to show that God's justice

  478. is far greater than humans in that.

  479. And so,

  480. the cry of,

  481. how long, O Lord?

  482. It's something that has been

  483. throughout Scripture,

  484. Psalm 13,

  485. Psalm 79,

  486. Habakkuk 1.

  487. If you've ever read Habakkuk,

  488. that's a pretty good book in the Bible

  489. I should read.

  490. The saints have always cried that question,

  491. but it's waiting upon the Lord

  492. for his divine timing.

  493. And so,

  494. creation shakes.

  495. There's a great earthquake that happens,

  496. right?

  497. The shaking up that happens.

  498. The sun becoming black as sathcloth,

  499. and the full moon becoming like blood.

  500. I don't want to see that.

  501. Right?

  502. What kind of scary imagery

  503. we can think of

  504. when we think about that

  505. and the stars falling to earth.

  506. every mountain and island

  507. being removed in here.

  508. It's actually connected

  509. with the prophet Joel,

  510. where it says,

  511. the sun shall be turned to darkness

  512. and the moon to blood

  513. before the great and awesome day

  514. of the Lord comes.

  515. It's talking about

  516. what will happen

  517. before the final judgment.

  518. So,

  519. that kind of language

  520. has been shown

  521. in Scripture before.

  522. We also know that

  523. in Exodus,

  524. when God moved against Pharaoh,

  525. the sun was darkened,

  526. right?

  527. That's another very similar language

  528. about judgment.

  529. And so,

  530. there's,

  531. and even the fig tree.

  532. When Jesus said,

  533. fun fact,

  534. in Luke 21,

  535. when Jesus says,

  536. when these things begin

  537. to take place,

  538. straighten up

  539. and raise your heads

  540. because your redemption

  541. is drawing near.

  542. That's very important,

  543. is that despite all of this

  544. apocalyptic

  545. and scary kind of language,

  546. we don't need to be afraid

  547. of that.

  548. it's going to show

  549. how powerful God is

  550. in His divine works

  551. that,

  552. let's be honest,

  553. we don't fully understand.

  554. And that's okay.

  555. It's just like how we hear

  556. that God works

  557. in mysterious ways.

  558. We don't understand

  559. all of the complexities

  560. of God.

  561. God works in such

  562. incredible ways

  563. that's like,

  564. whoa,

  565. okay,

  566. the sky turning black

  567. and the great earthquakes

  568. and people running

  569. and hiding in caves

  570. is very difficult

  571. for us to comprehend.

  572. And again,

  573. that is okay though.

  574. It's going to show

  575. that God is powerful

  576. and no one can stand

  577. the awe,

  578. the power,

  579. and the glory

  580. of God.

  581. And so in that,

  582. the imagery

  583. that we have here

  584. is of God's judgment

  585. showing the power

  586. of God.

  587. It's important

  588. for us to recognize.

  589. When you hear

  590. and read this kind

  591. of language,

  592. who's really in control?

  593. Is it the wicked

  594. or is it God?

  595. So it's here,

  596. it's God showing

  597. you wicked evildoers

  598. do not have

  599. the final say.

  600. It is God that does.

  601. Because the ability

  602. to shake up

  603. all of creation

  604. and everyone

  605. being afraid

  606. of the presence

  607. of the Lord

  608. in that respect

  609. is,

  610. well,

  611. I don't have

  612. the final say.

  613. It is God

  614. that has the final say.

  615. It's going to show

  616. his power

  617. and his authority.

  618. And then finally,

  619. the third thing

  620. is that all flesh

  621. hides, right?

  622. And so in this,

  623. it's interesting.

  624. It talks about

  625. the kings of the earth,

  626. the great ones,

  627. the generals,

  628. the rich and powerful.

  629. You kind of wish

  630. you would just stop there,

  631. right?

  632. No, it extends

  633. to everyone, right?

  634. Everyone in this place,

  635. slave and free,

  636. they hide themselves

  637. in the caves

  638. and among the rocks

  639. of the mountains.

  640. And you have to think

  641. how powerful

  642. a presence

  643. it must be,

  644. especially if you're wicked,

  645. to call upon the mountains

  646. and the rocks

  647. to fall on them.

  648. When is the last time

  649. you've ever called

  650. for a mountain

  651. to fall down on you?

  652. I mean,

  653. I hope that's none of us

  654. here in this room, right?

  655. But to think for a moment

  656. that the face of God,

  657. right?

  658. And we'll go into

  659. what that means.

  660. It's kind of an interesting one.

  661. The presence of God

  662. being so powerful

  663. that it's so convicting

  664. to you that you cannot stand

  665. being in the presence

  666. of the Lord.

  667. Isn't that interesting?

  668. That these people

  669. would rather flee away

  670. in darkness

  671. and rather

  672. have mountains

  673. fall on them

  674. than to deal

  675. with the Lord.

  676. That's powerful.

  677. I mean,

  678. that is

  679. something that's remarkable.

  680. And it's also

  681. a fulfillment

  682. of the prophet Isaiah

  683. when he says,

  684. men shall enter

  685. the caves of the rocks

  686. and the holes

  687. of the ground

  688. from before

  689. the terror

  690. of the Lord.

  691. Talking about

  692. God's judgment,

  693. His presence,

  694. and His wrath.

  695. We have to think

  696. when we read

  697. these kind of things

  698. that

  699. you know,

  700. you have

  701. God's love

  702. and His mercy,

  703. but you also have

  704. God's truth

  705. and God's wrath.

  706. Now,

  707. a lot of us

  708. love God

  709. on this side,

  710. right?

  711. We love the love

  712. of God

  713. and the mercy

  714. that He has for us,

  715. but there's also

  716. this sense of

  717. truth,

  718. justice,

  719. the wrath of God.

  720. We have to think

  721. that

  722. when God offers

  723. all of us

  724. a choice,

  725. we have to

  726. essentially decide,

  727. are we going

  728. to receive the love

  729. and salvation

  730. or are we not?

  731. It's so simple,

  732. but yet,

  733. there's so much

  734. consequence

  735. that comes

  736. to that.

  737. And so,

  738. in this,

  739. it's the wrath

  740. of the Lamb,

  741. and it's the same

  742. Lamb who opens

  743. the scroll.

  744. It's the one

  745. the wicked

  746. cannot bear.

  747. Now,

  748. if you think

  749. about it,

  750. this shows

  751. the power of God,

  752. the fulfillment

  753. of prophecy,

  754. and it's when,

  755. and I want to make

  756. this very clear,

  757. this is when evil

  758. is held accountable

  759. by God.

  760. Okay?

  761. I want to make

  762. that extremely

  763. clear to you.

  764. That this sense

  765. of,

  766. I want mountains

  767. to fall on me,

  768. it is this sense

  769. of the wrath

  770. of God

  771. and that they

  772. are being held

  773. accountable.

  774. How many of you

  775. have ever felt

  776. convicted before?

  777. Yeah?

  778. I know I have.

  779. There have been times

  780. where this stirring

  781. in my heart,

  782. and I've got,

  783. I've got to do

  784. something now.

  785. I've got to make

  786. a phone call,

  787. and that kind of,

  788. it's this,

  789. like,

  790. stirring,

  791. as it were,

  792. to act,

  793. and it bothers you.

  794. For some people,

  795. you may lose sleep

  796. over such a conviction,

  797. right?

  798. I've got to call

  799. and make amends

  800. with so-and-so,

  801. or I've got to,

  802. I've got to do this,

  803. I've got to talk

  804. to so-and-so,

  805. this just didn't sit

  806. right.

  807. And God works

  808. in that kind of,

  809. really remarkable

  810. kind of way,

  811. stirring in your heart.

  812. Well,

  813. imagine the kind

  814. of conviction

  815. for an unrepentant

  816. soul.

  817. Or imagine

  818. the kind of conviction

  819. of all evil,

  820. all evil people,

  821. in that sense.

  822. Very harsh language,

  823. indeed,

  824. but,

  825. it goes to show

  826. that God

  827. cannot stand

  828. for evil.

  829. And when

  830. the wicked

  831. do evil things

  832. to God's people,

  833. that's not a good thing.

  834. How many of you

  835. are

  836. protective of your

  837. own children?

  838. You wouldn't want

  839. anything to happen

  840. to them,

  841. correct?

  842. I hope everyone

  843. says yes in that,

  844. right?

  845. Protective of your

  846. children,

  847. protective of your

  848. spouse,

  849. right?

  850. Protected of

  851. family members

  852. and even your

  853. friends at times.

  854. So,

  855. if we're so quick

  856. to want to

  857. protect those

  858. that are our own,

  859. why is it such

  860. a big deal

  861. for us to

  862. understand that

  863. God wants to

  864. protect his own?

  865. We have to,

  866. and I know

  867. it's,

  868. obviously it's

  869. different human

  870. relations compared

  871. to the Lord

  872. and us,

  873. but it's a

  874. similar concept

  875. here when we

  876. think about this.

  877. And so,

  878. in our

  879. interpretation,

  880. what does all

  881. of this mean?

  882. The first one

  883. is that God

  884. is not late,

  885. he works in

  886. his own

  887. timing.

  888. Right?

  889. Now,

  890. for some of us,

  891. this is very

  892. hard to read.

  893. Even for a

  894. person like me,

  895. it can be hard

  896. to read because

  897. I want God

  898. to intervene

  899. now,

  900. right?

  901. How many of

  902. us,

  903. we wanted God

  904. to respond

  905. immediately?

  906. And we're

  907. like,

  908. God,

  909. come on.

  910. Now,

  911. maybe a few

  912. minutes ago,

  913. right?

  914. We have those

  915. kind of moments

  916. that happen,

  917. but it's

  918. important for us

  919. to know God

  920. works in his

  921. own timing.

  922. He's not a

  923. genie in the

  924. bottle,

  925. right?

  926. Although some

  927. of us may

  928. view God

  929. as that.

  930. It's

  931. inaccurate.

  932. But God

  933. is completing

  934. something.

  935. If you notice

  936. in the text

  937. when it says

  938. until the

  939. number of

  940. their fellow

  941. servants

  942. should be

  943. complete,

  944. God is

  945. not behind

  946. schedule.

  947. It is

  948. waiting for

  949. the proper

  950. time for

  951. all of

  952. his own

  953. to be

  954. gathered

  955. together.

  956. Okay?

  957. And I

  958. want you to

  959. consider the

  960. persecuted church,

  961. those that have

  962. gone before

  963. you.

  964. Those lives

  965. that have

  966. been persecuted,

  967. they're not

  968. forgotten.

  969. They are

  970. remembered.

  971. They are

  972. held.

  973. You even

  974. think of

  975. even in the

  976. early days

  977. of

  978. Christianity

  979. spreading.

  980. The wars

  981. that happened.

  982. Ever heard

  983. of Emperor

  984. Nero?

  985. Right?

  986. That's a

  987. good example,

  988. right?

  989. In that

  990. kind of

  991. apocalyptic

  992. language.

  993. Persecution

  994. of the

  995. Christians.

  996. And in

  997. that,

  998. to face

  999. that kind

  1000. of fear

  1001. and trembling,

  1002. it's relying

  1003. on God

  1004. knowing that

  1005. look,

  1006. God has

  1007. the power

  1008. over

  1009. death

  1010. itself.

  1011. So these

  1012. wicked people

  1013. that think

  1014. they're going

  1015. to take

  1016. your life,

  1017. they're not

  1018. going to

  1019. have the

  1020. final say.

  1021. It is

  1022. God who

  1023. controls

  1024. life itself.

  1025. So although

  1026. people may

  1027. do wicked

  1028. things,

  1029. and they

  1030. may do

  1031. evil things,

  1032. God gives

  1033. them the

  1034. choice to

  1035. make on

  1036. what they're

  1037. going to

  1038. do.

  1039. It's the

  1040. same kind

  1041. of choices

  1042. we have

  1043. to make.

  1044. Are we

  1045. going to

  1046. come to

  1047. know the

  1048. Lord?

  1049. Are we

  1050. going to

  1051. let God

  1052. transform us

  1053. and do

  1054. good in

  1055. his name?

  1056. Or are we

  1057. going to

  1058. be like

  1059. the wicked?

  1060. It's

  1061. unfortunate

  1062. when in

  1063. my own

  1064. personal life

  1065. there have

  1066. been people

  1067. I've met

  1068. who blatantly

  1069. not just

  1070. reject God

  1071. but go

  1072. against God

  1073. in the

  1074. process.

  1075. If you

  1076. want to

  1077. talk about

  1078. a tragedy,

  1079. it's the

  1080. hardened

  1081. hearts of

  1082. people.

  1083. And it's

  1084. very interesting

  1085. to talk

  1086. about how

  1087. God renews

  1088. our spirit,

  1089. how God

  1090. transforms

  1091. our mind,

  1092. changes the

  1093. very fabric

  1094. of who we

  1095. are.

  1096. It's very

  1097. unfortunate if

  1098. you ever

  1099. know somebody

  1100. that has

  1101. departed,

  1102. as it were.

  1103. And so

  1104. the persecuted

  1105. church today,

  1106. it stands at

  1107. the same

  1108. altar as

  1109. Stephen,

  1110. Polycarp,

  1111. and those

  1112. that have

  1113. been martyred.

  1114. I mean,

  1115. who can

  1116. count the

  1117. amount of

  1118. lives that

  1119. have been

  1120. lost?

  1121. It's a

  1122. really,

  1123. it's a very

  1124. heavy thing

  1125. for us to

  1126. think about,

  1127. right?

  1128. It's very

  1129. difficult to

  1130. talk about

  1131. the persecuted

  1132. church,

  1133. but at the

  1134. same time,

  1135. knowing that

  1136. they will be

  1137. remembered,

  1138. to be given

  1139. that new

  1140. robe,

  1141. and they'll

  1142. dwell in the

  1143. presence of

  1144. the Lord

  1145. forever,

  1146. that's a

  1147. remarkable

  1148. thing.

  1149. And so

  1150. in that,

  1151. there's a

  1152. question that's

  1153. asked in

  1154. Luke 18,

  1155. will not

  1156. God give

  1157. justice to

  1158. his own,

  1159. who cry to

  1160. him day

  1161. and night?

  1162. I tell you,

  1163. he will give

  1164. justice to

  1165. them.

  1166. That's right

  1167. after the,

  1168. that's in that

  1169. connection with

  1170. the parable of

  1171. the persistent

  1172. widow,

  1173. showing the

  1174. same kind of

  1175. connection.

  1176. And this is

  1177. part of the

  1178. remarkability,

  1179. the significance

  1180. of scripture,

  1181. is how connected

  1182. it is with the

  1183. Old Testament

  1184. and with the

  1185. parables of

  1186. Christ,

  1187. these kind of

  1188. things.

  1189. And this is

  1190. connected,

  1191. right,

  1192. with the second

  1193. one,

  1194. the martyrs

  1195. are not

  1196. forgotten.

  1197. They wear

  1198. white in

  1199. anticipation.

  1200. What beautiful

  1201. language in

  1202. that.

  1203. The white

  1204. robe is God

  1205. making everything

  1206. new.

  1207. Everyone will

  1208. be restored

  1209. unto him.

  1210. It's as though

  1211. you received a

  1212. royal garment

  1213. given by God

  1214. himself,

  1215. or like the

  1216. guests at the

  1217. great banquet

  1218. who wait in

  1219. anticipation for

  1220. better days to

  1221. come.

  1222. It's kind of,

  1223. you think about

  1224. it,

  1225. we can think

  1226. about this in

  1227. common terms.

  1228. You're waiting

  1229. for the

  1230. wedding feast,

  1231. a great banquet

  1232. as it were,

  1233. and you're

  1234. waiting for

  1235. everyone to

  1236. arrive in

  1237. their proper

  1238. attire.

  1239. That's such

  1240. simple language,

  1241. but that's

  1242. very similar

  1243. to what the

  1244. Lord is

  1245. doing.

  1246. And so

  1247. God honors

  1248. those who

  1249. gave their

  1250. lives for

  1251. the cause

  1252. of Christ,

  1253. for the

  1254. witness of

  1255. Christ.

  1256. They're not

  1257. forgotten,

  1258. and their

  1259. lives are not

  1260. wasted.

  1261. They are

  1262. counted.

  1263. It's just

  1264. like how

  1265. the Apostle

  1266. Paul wrote

  1267. in Philippians,

  1268. for to me

  1269. to live,

  1270. for to me

  1271. to live

  1272. is Christ

  1273. and to

  1274. die

  1275. is gain.

  1276. It's

  1277. such a,

  1278. almost

  1279. confusing

  1280. when you

  1281. read it

  1282. at first,

  1283. right?

  1284. But it's

  1285. connected in

  1286. here,

  1287. that death

  1288. is not

  1289. the end.

  1290. And for

  1291. the saint,

  1292. death is

  1293. the moment

  1294. where the

  1295. white robe

  1296. is going

  1297. to be

  1298. placed,

  1299. given to

  1300. you.

  1301. Because God

  1302. makes

  1303. everything

  1304. new.

  1305. So we

  1306. don't need

  1307. to fear

  1308. the apocalyptic

  1309. language of

  1310. revelation.

  1311. We don't

  1312. need to

  1313. fear

  1314. evildoers.

  1315. We trust

  1316. in the

  1317. living God

  1318. who will

  1319. sustain us

  1320. and hold

  1321. us.

  1322. And so,

  1323. finally,

  1324. you have

  1325. the two

  1326. kinds of

  1327. hiding,

  1328. the two

  1329. kinds of

  1330. face I

  1331. put on

  1332. here.

  1333. You can

  1334. hide in

  1335. the protection

  1336. of the

  1337. Lord,

  1338. right?

  1339. to be

  1340. hidden

  1341. away.

  1342. There's

  1343. language

  1344. talking about

  1345. the shadow

  1346. of the

  1347. wings,

  1348. right?

  1349. To be

  1350. protected

  1351. as a

  1352. bird

  1353. protects

  1354. its own,

  1355. right?

  1356. You think

  1357. of that

  1358. kind of

  1359. beautiful

  1360. language,

  1361. how God

  1362. protects

  1363. his own.

  1364. So you

  1365. can hide

  1366. in the

  1367. Lord,

  1368. as it

  1369. were,

  1370. and the

  1371. protection

  1372. in the

  1373. cover,

  1374. to be

  1375. hidden

  1376. in the

  1377. lamb.

  1378. Or you

  1379. can hide

  1380. away from

  1381. the face

  1382. of God.

  1383. Just as it

  1384. mentions that

  1385. the king's

  1386. hide from

  1387. the face

  1388. of God

  1389. and begging

  1390. the mountains

  1391. to cover

  1392. them.

  1393. It's going

  1394. to show

  1395. that in

  1396. that sense

  1397. of power

  1398. of God,

  1399. what are you

  1400. going to

  1401. hide in?

  1402. Are you

  1403. going to

  1404. flee to

  1405. the mountains

  1406. or are you

  1407. going to

  1408. flee to

  1409. God and

  1410. be hidden

  1411. in him

  1412. as it

  1413. were?

  1414. And it's

  1415. interesting

  1416. that to

  1417. flee to

  1418. the mountains

  1419. would be

  1420. against the

  1421. very notion

  1422. of what,

  1423. when we go

  1424. over our

  1425. benediction

  1426. here at

  1427. church.

  1428. The Lord

  1429. make his

  1430. face shine

  1431. upon you

  1432. and be

  1433. gracious to

  1434. you.

  1435. The Lord

  1436. lift up his

  1437. countenance

  1438. upon you

  1439. and give

  1440. you peace.

  1441. You think

  1442. for a moment,

  1443. well, if you're

  1444. fleeing away

  1445. from the

  1446. Lord, it's

  1447. the opposite

  1448. of that.

  1449. Really think

  1450. about that.

  1451. And so,

  1452. let us,

  1453. as we read

  1454. that, as we

  1455. think of

  1456. this, may

  1457. you hide

  1458. in the

  1459. protection of

  1460. the Lord.

  1461. This leads

  1462. us then to

  1463. how should

  1464. we live?

  1465. The first

  1466. one I put

  1467. is to cry

  1468. out to

  1469. the Lord.

  1470. Pray to

  1471. the Lord.

  1472. Be in

  1473. connection

  1474. with him.

  1475. That's

  1476. something

  1477. that's very

  1478. important.

  1479. The persistent

  1480. widow did

  1481. not stop

  1482. asking for

  1483. justice,

  1484. and the

  1485. souls beneath

  1486. the altar

  1487. did not

  1488. stop crying.

  1489. It's a

  1490. call for

  1491. us to

  1492. pray without

  1493. ceasing.

  1494. for us to

  1495. continue to

  1496. remain in

  1497. the Lord.

  1498. It's okay to

  1499. cry out to

  1500. the Lord for

  1501. justice, for

  1502. healing, for

  1503. the prodigal, for

  1504. the persecuted

  1505. church.

  1506. God hears our

  1507. prayers.

  1508. God will

  1509. answer in

  1510. his time.

  1511. And let's

  1512. not forget

  1513. when we

  1514. think of

  1515. praying to

  1516. the Lord,

  1517. be specific

  1518. in your

  1519. prayers.

  1520. Pray for

  1521. your city.

  1522. Pray for

  1523. your leaders.

  1524. prayers.

  1525. Pray for

  1526. your family.

  1527. Pray for

  1528. that prodigal

  1529. family member.

  1530. Think of

  1531. people, and

  1532. maybe take

  1533. some time

  1534. this week

  1535. to think

  1536. of who

  1537. specifically

  1538. you can

  1539. pray for.

  1540. The second

  1541. thing then

  1542. is to

  1543. endure,

  1544. that God

  1545. restores

  1546. his own.

  1547. So much

  1548. in Scripture

  1549. when it

  1550. says to

  1551. hold fast

  1552. until the

  1553. end and

  1554. to remain

  1555. in him

  1556. until the

  1557. end is

  1558. recognizing

  1559. this is

  1560. the other

  1561. side,

  1562. that God

  1563. will restore

  1564. you.

  1565. No matter

  1566. what the

  1567. world does

  1568. to you,

  1569. how the

  1570. world may

  1571. attack or

  1572. even persecute

  1573. you,

  1574. God will

  1575. protect you.

  1576. God will

  1577. be there

  1578. with you,

  1579. and he

  1580. will restore

  1581. you.

  1582. That should

  1583. give us

  1584. comfort.

  1585. That should

  1586. give us

  1587. a really

  1588. good

  1589. understanding.

  1590. For many

  1591. of us,

  1592. we may be

  1593. worn down

  1594. in doing

  1595. good.

  1596. For many

  1597. of us,

  1598. we may

  1599. even be

  1600. suffering in

  1601. some

  1602. capacity.

  1603. Just

  1604. know,

  1605. let this

  1606. be a

  1607. call for

  1608. you to

  1609. remain in

  1610. the Lord

  1611. and to

  1612. know that

  1613. you'll be

  1614. restored in

  1615. him and

  1616. to be

  1617. that God

  1618. will make

  1619. all things

  1620. new.

  1621. The family

  1622. is almost

  1623. complete.

  1624. In other

  1625. words,

  1626. it's like the

  1627. family reunion

  1628. coming together

  1629. despite this

  1630. incredible kind

  1631. of language.

  1632. God honors

  1633. his own.

  1634. The grave

  1635. does not

  1636. have the

  1637. last word.

  1638. It is the

  1639. Lamb of

  1640. God who

  1641. does.

  1642. Let us

  1643. remember

  1644. that.

  1645. And finally,

  1646. the third

  1647. thing is to

  1648. proclaim,

  1649. to share

  1650. the gospel

  1651. whatever the

  1652. cost.

  1653. It is

  1654. recognizing

  1655. that,

  1656. look,

  1657. the martyrs

  1658. were slain

  1659. for the

  1660. word of

  1661. God and

  1662. the witness

  1663. that they

  1664. bore.

  1665. Their

  1666. testimony is

  1667. why they

  1668. rest beneath

  1669. the altar.

  1670. And so,

  1671. let this be a

  1672. call for you

  1673. to share in

  1674. your faith,

  1675. in the words

  1676. that you

  1677. speak,

  1678. in how

  1679. you conduct

  1680. your life.

  1681. Plant seeds

  1682. and recognize

  1683. some people

  1684. will choose

  1685. Christ,

  1686. some will

  1687. not.

  1688. Some will

  1689. respond to

  1690. that invitation,

  1691. some will

  1692. not.

  1693. Our job is

  1694. to continue

  1695. in the

  1696. Great Commission,

  1697. to tell the

  1698. world about

  1699. Jesus Christ.

  1700. Our job is

  1701. to witness.

  1702. And it's

  1703. important for us

  1704. to recognize

  1705. there are

  1706. churches in

  1707. the world

  1708. today where

  1709. their Bibles

  1710. are hidden,

  1711. where pastors

  1712. are imprisoned,

  1713. and where

  1714. believers are

  1715. martyred for

  1716. the name of

  1717. Christ.

  1718. We remember

  1719. those lives.

  1720. The Lord

  1721. remembers them.

  1722. And we pray

  1723. for those

  1724. that are

  1725. persecuted.

  1726. We proclaim

  1727. and we thank

  1728. God for the

  1729. blessings that

  1730. he has given

  1731. us.

  1732. And so,

  1733. in conclusion,

  1734. the Lamb who

  1735. was slain,

  1736. he holds the

  1737. scroll.

  1738. The blood of

  1739. the martyrs

  1740. is at the

  1741. base of the

  1742. altar,

  1743. representing that

  1744. they are not

  1745. forgotten,

  1746. that they are

  1747. held,

  1748. that they are

  1749. remembered.

  1750. And the

  1751. prayers of the

  1752. saints,

  1753. they rise as

  1754. incense,

  1755. that beautiful

  1756. language,

  1757. to know that

  1758. God does

  1759. have the

  1760. final say.

  1761. No one can

  1762. stand against

  1763. the power of

  1764. God.

  1765. And remember

  1766. that in your

  1767. life,

  1768. you all have a

  1769. decision to

  1770. make.

  1771. Whether to

  1772. receive salvation

  1773. through faith

  1774. or to not.

  1775. And in

  1776. receiving salvation,

  1777. know that there

  1778. is a call for

  1779. you to be

  1780. transformed,

  1781. for you to

  1782. grow in the

  1783. Lord,

  1784. and to

  1785. proclaim the

  1786. good news of

  1787. the gospel to

  1788. others.

  1789. And how

  1790. wonderful is it

  1791. to know that

  1792. in knowing the

  1793. Lord,

  1794. no matter what

  1795. evil does,

  1796. it cannot stand

  1797. against the

  1798. power of God.

  1799. God, no

  1800. matter what

  1801. evil thinks

  1802. that they have

  1803. the final say,

  1804. they certainly

  1805. don't.

  1806. It is God

  1807. who has the

  1808. final say.

  1809. And so,

  1810. in all of

  1811. this, let us

  1812. cry out to the

  1813. Lord, let us

  1814. remain in him,

  1815. and proclaim the

  1816. name of Jesus.

  1817. Let's pray

  1818. together.

  1819. And Father God,

  1820. we thank you for

  1821. this passage.

1822. We know this is a

  1823. very difficult

  1824. passage.

  1825. A lot of

  1826. language of

  1827. the sky

  1828. vanishing like

  1829. a scroll,

  1830. the stars

  1831. falling to

  1832. earth,

  1833. showing the

  1834. power of

  1835. who you

  1836. are.

  1837. And we

  1838. just pray

  1839. that may

  1840. we all come

  1841. to know who

  1842. you are.

  1843. You call each

  1844. and every one

  1845. of us,

  1846. may we respond

  1847. accordingly.

  1848. May we not

  1849. be afraid of

  1850. judgment.

  1851. May we not

  1852. be afraid of

  1853. you.

  1854. Rather, may

  1855. we come to

  1856. you and

  1857. respond to

  1858. you.

  1859. May we be

  1860. in that sense

  1861. of, just as

  1862. scripture talks

  1863. about, the

  1864. fear of the

  1865. Lord, being

  1866. in the sense

  1867. of awe and

  1868. wonder of

  1869. who you

  1870. are.

  1871. May we

  1872. boldly come

  1873. before you

  1874. and respond

  1875. to you.

  1876. May we be

  1877. transformed in

  1878. our understanding

  1879. and may we

  1880. recognize that

  1881. there are some

  1882. things that we

  1883. are just not

  1884. going to

  1885. understand and

  1886. that's okay.

  1887. What matters

  1888. is that we

  1889. believe in you

  1890. and that we

  1891. grow and we

  1892. continue in

  1893. the mission.

  1894. Father, we're

  1895. grateful for the

  1896. grace that you've

  1897. set before us

  1898. and how when we

  1899. receive this

  1900. salvation, we

  1901. certainly are a

  1902. work in progress.

  1903. May we be

  1904. molded.

  1905. May we be

  1906. confident in

  1907. you.

  1908. May we live

  1909. in love like

  1910. your son,

  1911. Jesus Christ,

  1912. the way, the

  1913. truth, and the

  1914. life.

  1915. May we wait

  1916. upon you and

  1917. trust in your

  1918. divine timing.

  1919. It is in the

  1920. name of Jesus

  1921. that we pray

  1922. and we all

  1923. say together,

  1924. Amen, church.

  1925. Amen.
