  1. Death

  2. Be not proud

  3. Death

  4. Be not

  5. proud

  6. The phrase

  7. Death be not proud

  8. is

  9. from the first line of a

  10. sonnet

  11. Written by 16th century poet and

  12. English cleric

  13. Who was made Dean of st. Paul's Cathedral in London?

  14. Sir John done

  15. He employs the poetic device of

  16. irony and

  17. personification

  18. To illustrate to people

  19. that are afraid of death of

  20. The truism that death is

  21. merely a journey

  22. It is a short rest

  23. Before reaching the afterlife

  24. So John done talks to death as if it were a person

  25. Shaming death for being proud of itself

  26. Done refers to death brothers and sisters as an apostrophe

  27. Not the mark of punctuation. That's an apostrophe

  28. but apostrophe as a figure of speech

  29. The word apostrophe

  30. Comes from the ancient Greek and literally means turning away

  31. It involves the speaker or the writer

  32. addressing an inanimate

  33. abject or an abstract idea

  34. By turning its but his or her back on what they are talking about as if what they are speaking of is an

  35. Abstraction or does not really exist a

  36. Modern-day preacher poet

  37. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  38. Put death in bolder relief

  39. When he said death is not a period which ends this great sentence of life

  40. But rather a comma which punctuates it for more lofty significance

  41. Dr. King said death is not a blind alley

  42. Which leads into a state of nothingness?

  43. But rather an open door

  44. Which leads to life eternal?

  45. Robert Ingersoll

  46. Who was not a believer said life is a narrow veil

  47. between the barren peaks of two eternities

  48. birth and

  49. death

  50. Dr. Gardner see Taylor who went to be with the Lord at the age of 96

  51. Close the chasm that Ingersoll could not span

  52. Dr. W. Franklin Richardson made mention to me that when dr. Taylor

  53. learned of the death of dr. TJ Jimison and other great pulpit luminaries

  54. Dr. Taylor's response was always

  55. good for him

  56. Good for him

  57. Apparently we Christians many of us have a problem with death

  58. We use many

  59. euphemisms

  60. to sanitize and

  61. disinfect

  62. This matter called death

  63. We say so and so has expired

  64. Or she or she has passed away

  65. If you from Louisiana they kicked the bucket

  66. Or you from Texas or Oklahoma they've gone to the Ponderosa

  67. Or if you're from California, they move to the great beyond

  68. And if you're in my family, you never talk about death you say if something happens to me

  69. My sister says that all the time if something happened to me

  70. I say you mean if you're getting a car wreck or if you break your leg that's something happening to you

  71. What do you what are you really talking about? She said well if something happened to me

  72. This is what I want to happen. I said no no no let's talk about this something happening to you

  73. And I want to say to do those of us here this morning who call it kicking the bucket or passing on or expired or

  74. Going to the Ponderosa or going to the great beyond or something happened to you

  75. Let me give you an arresting statistic

  76. If the Lord Jesus delays his coming

  77. One out of every one of us in here this morning is going to die

  78. Put it in your phone

  79. Put it on your day planner

  80. Put it on your schedule. You might you might cancel your beauty shop appointment

  81. You might cancel your nail appointment. You might cancel your massage. You might cancel your eye doctor

  82. You might cancel your appointment with your which your which your gardenic colleges

  83. But put this on your schedule if Jesus does not come soon

  84. You and I are going to die

  85. I don't care how pretty you are

  86. I don't care how fine you are okay. How young you are how old you are all of us have an appointment

  87. With death

  88. But for the Christian death is not the grim Reaper

  89. For the child of God death is transportation

  90. Death carries us from one side to the other side. Listen, I

  91. Could fall asleep tonight and not wake up in the morning on this side

  92. I'm going to wake up in the morning either on this side

  93. Or on the other side because to be absent from the body. I

  94. Wish I had a vibrator

  95. Is to be present with the Lord

  96. we know

  97. That if this earthly house I

  98. Wish I had two or three more witnesses of this tabernacle is

  99. dissolved

  100. We have another building a

  101. House

  102. Not made with hands

  103. But eternal in the heaven we used to sing it when I was a boy there's a leak in this old building

  104. and

  105. My soul

  106. Has got to move

  107. Let me see if I can help somebody this morning

  108. All you have

  109. All I have

  110. is a lease agreement

  111. This this house

  112. this body

  113. That I'm living in that you are living in all you have is a lease agreement

  114. and

  115. One day the landlord

  116. Is going to come and say to you that your lease is up

  117. And it would be tragic to have to move with no forwarding address

  118. When this life is over I

  119. Wish I had a believer here when I'm through struggling down here

  120. I have another place to go I have a house not made with hands

  121. Because I am a child of God

  122. Apparently

  123. Some of the Corinthians had come to doubt the resurrection

  124. and the apostle devotes an entire chapter

  125. 58 verses

  126. To reassure them and us that the resurrection of Jesus is a real event and

  127. His resurrection from the dead can give us victory in our day-to-day life

  128. Victory over what brother pastor

  129. We Christians have victory over death

  130. Let me let me say something to us that hopefully you're gonna go on talking about

  131. Fear of death is heathenism

  132. Fear of death is heathenism

  133. not Christianity

  134. Because in the Old Testament death was called the king of terror

  135. But in the New Testament death is called sleep

  136. That's why when I'm gone

  137. They're not bringing me to a graveyard because that's for dead people

  138. I'm going to a cemetery

  139. Because the very word cemetery means sleeping place

  140. When I die I'm just falling asleep. I

  141. Wish I had some help to preach it

  142. I'm not dead. I'm sleeping

  143. I'm sleeping in that UK wake me up

  144. But when the trumpet sound

  145. The dead in Christ

  146. Shall be raised first. I wish I had some help to preach it and those of us who are alive and remain

  147. Shall be caught up together to meet them in the air. We shall be raptured caught up

  148. change in

  149. the twinkling of an eye

  150. I

  151. The scripture says two will be sleeping in a bed

  152. One will disappear and one will remain

  153. Two will be working in a field

  154. One will disappear and

  155. One will remain

  156. I like talking about the two people in scripture who did not taste death

  157. One was Elijah

  158. caught up in a chariot of fire

  159. But the one I really like talking about is Enoch. I

  160. Need two or three more Bible reading

  161. The Bible says Enoch

  162. Walk with God

  163. And he was not

  164. Because God took it

  165. One day Enoch and God was just walking and talking and and having a good time like they did every day and

  166. Then God said since you're closer to where I lived into where you live

  167. Won't you just come on and go with me

  168. And God took it

  169. One day I just want to be

  170. took it I

  171. Know that ain't good English, but that's good Baptist talk. I

  172. Want to just be took it one day? I want to just be doing what I'm doing and the law just took me

  173. I'm going home because I want to be closer to where he lives

  174. in my father's house a

  175. Many

  176. Many mansion

  177. If it were not so I

  178. Would have told you

  179. I go

  180. That's Jesus talking now

  181. To prepare a place for you and if I go to prepare a place for you

  182. I'm gonna come again

  183. And receive you under myself that where I am

  184. There you will be also

  185. Christ

  186. Overcame death and

  187. Has conquered the grave by his resurrection and

  188. brought life and

  189. mentality to light by the gospel

  190. Paul said I delivered under you

  191. First that which I have also received

  192. How he was crucified and died one Friday

  193. According to the scriptures

  194. How he was buried

  195. According to the scriptures how he rose on the third day

  196. According to the scriptures and Paul said he called me an apostle born

  197. out of due time

  198. To preach to you

  199. the resurrection I

  200. Am not even qualified. He says to be called an apostle

  201. Because I persecuted the church of God

  202. Here it is, but by the grace of God I

  203. Am

  204. What I am and everybody here who's been saved this morning don't brag on how moral you are

  205. Don't brag on how pious and righteous and scripture and illiterate you are

  206. Because all it takes is a moment and any one of us can fall in the sin, but by the grace of God

  207. I

  208. am

  209. What I

  210. Don't don't you just don't you just want to scream

  211. When you talk to these people who who answer their phone praise the Lord

  212. I

  213. I'm blessed and highly favored

  214. I'm too blessed to be stressed and they got a fish on their bumper

  215. And they're always listening to his gospel music and and you can't raise your voice around them because

  216. They're halo might fall off

  217. And and and that's why they cover themselves up so tight because their wings might be exposed

  218. That that's got to be a miserable confining

  219. Cold lifeless dead kind of life

  220. Because you can't appreciate grace

  221. until you've been a liar

  222. You can't appreciate grace until you've seen so wickedly

  223. That the Lord had to cover you with his blood and

  224. When you come here on Sunday morning, you ain't shouting because you got it right all the week long last week

  225. You come here shouting cuz you messed up, but by the grace of God I

  226. Am

  227. What I am I

  228. Should have been dead I

  229. Deserve to be dead

  230. But mercy grace

  231. Surely

  232. Goodness

  233. And mercy

  234. Shall follow me

  235. All the days of my life. I wish I had some noise right here

  236. Yeah

  237. Though I walk

  238. Through the valley of the shadow of death

  239. I fear no evil cuz I got somebody with

  240. Your rod and your staff

  241. They comfort me

  242. He prepared the table before

  243. In the presence of my enemies

  244. He anoints my head because listen, I don't know who my enemies are

  245. They look like my friends

  246. They talk like my friends

  247. They laugh and grin in my face like my friends, but I don't know who my head. That's why I need a shepherd

  248. Who can prepare a table before me

  249. in

  250. The presence of my enemies

  251. And then he anoints my head with oil

  252. So that my cup is

  253. Running over I

  254. Need a I need a witness here

  255. Who get happy when it ain't Sunday? You

  256. Don't even have to be in church

  257. You you you you you you just start thinking about

  258. How many doors he's open

  259. How many tears he's dry

  260. How many ways he's made

  261. How much he led you around that you could have fallen into but he kept you

  262. He never left you

  263. And it's just Wednesday and you start shouting about his goodness. Let me let me let me let me testify before I move on

  264. Sometime when I when I when I turn the ignition in my car

  265. I

  266. Think about the little the little Buick century I used to have

  267. That that they knew it was me coming down the street

  268. Because it smoked so much

  269. They thought I was the mosquito man spraying for mosquito

  270. And then I had to park it where I didn't have to back up

  271. Because my transmission was gone

  272. And

  273. Then look like it had a mind of its own if I left it idling it just take off by itself

  274. And I had to dive in the drivers of winter

  275. To stop it but look where I

  276. Had a little black and white 13 inch television

  277. With some foreign paper on the on the antenna. I wish I had somebody to help me

  278. And my knob was broke so I had to get a pair of pliers I

  279. Couldn't afford cable so I just had three channels, but look where the Lord I

  280. Need one or two more witnesses here who can remember all you had was one pass shoes

  281. All you had was one good suit of clothes

  282. But now you open your closet and got to make up your mind what you're gonna put

  283. down through the years

  284. The last bit good to me

  285. I've got the victory over death

  286. I've got the victory in verse 56 over deception

  287. The sting of death is sin and

  288. The strength or the power of sin is the law

  289. And and when you look at it

  290. And and when you look at sin and the law

  291. It terrifies you

  292. Because you know that because of your sin and

  293. Because you can't keep the law

  294. You're hopeless

  295. But if in this life only

  296. We have hope we are among all men

  297. Most miserable

  298. Sin is the reason Jesus came into work

  299. He lived and he died on the cross and

  300. It is his death that delivers us from our sins because he paid the price for sin

  301. With his own blood

  302. And if the power of death arises from sin

  303. Then the only way it can be done away is

  304. by the expiation and

  305. Forgiveness of sin and sin must be atoned for if death is to be destroyed

  306. Sin gave death a sting and

  307. The sting of death

  308. pierces

  309. pains and

  310. Poisons

  311. The power of sin pierces

  312. The guilt of sin is painful and

  313. The pollution and defilement of sin is poison

  314. But Jesus took the sting

  315. I was trying to save this till I got to the end of the sermon

  316. I shared it with the brothers in the back in our consecration

  317. my daughter

  318. Victoria is afraid of anything that moves or crawls. That's not a person

  319. She's scared of spiders she's scared of roaches

  320. Was bees

  321. Worms anything that squirms moves crawls does not a human

  322. She's afraid of it

  323. As bad as she try to think she is

  324. She'll call me at 10 30 at night to come get a dead roach out of her house. I

  325. Said Victoria is dead. Oh dad. I

  326. Got to get up out of my house and go get a dead roach

  327. She's been that way all of her life when she was a small child about four maybe five years old

  328. We were sitting outside and a wasp came around and

  329. She jumped in my neck and almost squeezed my eyes out of the socket

  330. And I said what's what's the matter? She said dad is a wasp. It's a wasp

  331. And I saw the was flying around and I grabbed it

  332. And it stung me in my hand

  333. And when I opened my hand I

  334. showed her the stinger and

  335. I said it can't bother you now

  336. Because the stinger is

  337. In my hand

  338. One Friday

  339. On a hill called Calvary

  340. Jesus took the sting out of death and

  341. Said oh death

  342. Where is your sting?

  343. grave

  344. Where's your victory? You want to know where the sting of death is Jesus just got to open his hand

  345. He died

  346. Didn't he die and when he died he took the sting out of death and

  347. Robbed the grave of its victory

  348. And so I've got the victory over death I've got the victory

  349. Over deception

  350. Never the next time you go to the funeral of a Christian that's deception you look in there

  351. They fooling you they ain't dead

  352. They just sleep

  353. And one of these days

  354. You're gonna read in the Houston Chronicle in the obituary column

  355. Yeah, the Terry Anderson is dead

  356. That's a misprint

  357. That's deception I'll be more live then

  358. Than I've ever been before I

  359. Will drop this metal of flesh

  360. step out of the narrow

  361. Circumstitions of time and into the

  362. Elimitable experiences of eternity when life's fitful fever is ended I will not be dead

  363. I'm going to sleep

  364. You can't get mad with a man who's worked all day who wants some sleep

  365. Somebody help me talk here

  366. When I've borne my burdens in the heat of the day when my life is ended I want to go to sleep

  367. If you miss me

  368. From singing down here and you can't find me nowhere

  369. Come up to bright glory

  370. I'll be singing up there

  371. I have victory over death. I

  372. Have victory over deception

  373. But I have victory also finally over damnation

  374. It's right here in the text but

  375. Thanks be to God

  376. Who just gives us

  377. Victory

  378. Through our Lord Jesus Christ we don't we don't deserve it

  379. We didn't do anything to earn it

  380. We will never be good enough to merit it

  381. Because of the death of Christ and I believe in his finished work on the cross he just gives us

  382. the victory

  383. And when somebody gives you something that you don't deserve you ought to have sense enough

  384. To just say thank you I

  385. Know what I deserve

  386. But thank you for your grace I

  387. Know what I got coming to me

  388. But thank you for your grace I

  389. Know what should have happened to me

  390. But thank you for your grace

  391. Do you know what could have happened to you between last Sunday and this one?

  392. Somebody ought to help me preach

  393. You don't know how many cars God slowed down to keep from running into you

  394. You don't know what was going on while you were sleeping outside your house

  395. I know you had your alarm system on and I know you got burglar balls

  396. But but but God kept you

  397. You slept soundly last night

  398. Because the death angel was flying over the city of Houston

  399. But your house was covered

  400. Not not not by a burglar system

  401. But covered by the blood of Christ I

  402. Wish I had a believer here

  403. Because some people better by nature than we are

  404. I did not wake up this morning

  405. but God woke us up and

  406. Then God got us to his house

  407. safely on the interstate and

  408. Then brought us to our particular seat in the sanctuary

  409. You could have dropped dead as soon as you got out of your car

  410. Or you could have walked in this church and died in the vestibule

  411. Or you could have sit down in your pew

  412. spoke to somebody

  413. Close your eyes and never wake up again

  414. God's just been good to us

  415. Every move I make

  416. Every step I take

  417. Is by the goodness and the mercy of God Almighty

  418. You need to tell some super saint next to you

  419. Who's trying to act all holy and they they haven't opened their mouth since they've been in the sanctuary

  420. They've never sung any of the songs that we sang this morning

  421. They didn't clap they didn't move from side to side

  422. They didn't give God glory. They didn't put their head down during devotion

  423. You need to let them know that it was not for God's goodness

  424. If it were not for God's

  425. mercy

  426. If it were not for the fact that he looked beyond my faults and

  427. saw my needs

  428. God's been good to me. I

  429. Need one or two more believers to help me close here. I know you were waiting for me to get to verse number 58

  430. You probably thought I forgot about verse number 58, but I didn't forget about verse number 58

  431. There's a whole lot of shouting in verse 58

  432. But you got to read verse 50 on down

  433. Before you can shout about verse number 58

  434. Because in verse number 50 it starts out by behold I

  435. show you a

  436. mystery

  437. We shall not all sleep

  438. But we shall all be changed

  439. in a moment in the twinkling of an eye for the trumpet of God shall

  440. sound and when this model has put on

  441. immortality and when this corruptible has put on in corruption

  442. Then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written

  443. Death has been swallowed up in

  444. victory

  445. Oh death

  446. Where is your sting?

  447. Oh grave

  448. Where is your victory?

  449. The sting of death is sin and the strength of sin is the law

  450. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory

  451. Through our Lord Jesus Christ

  452. Here it comes therefore

  453. Whenever you see the word therefore you ought to want to know what it's there for

  454. Here is what it's there for

  455. You got to read on up into chapter 15

  456. If there be no resurrection of the dead

  457. Then we have died in vain

  458. Our faith is in vain

  459. Our preaching is in vain

  460. And we are among all men

  461. most miserable

  462. But thank you Jesus

  463. He died

  464. on a hill called Calvary and his death was sufficient

  465. For God getting a ransom for our sins

  466. What can wash away my sin?

  467. Nothing but the blood of Jesus

  468. What can make me

  469. Hold again

  470. Nothing

  471. But the blood of Jesus

  472. I need a believer here this morning

  473. Who know what the word therefore is therefore

  474. Therefore my beloved brethren

  475. Be steadfast

  476. That word steadfast means just be seated

  477. Unmovable

  478. That word unmovable just means be firm

  479. Always abounding in the work of the Lord

  480. For as much as you know

  481. That your labor is not in vain

  482. In the Lord

  483. You're gonna help me close this won't you?

  484. Sometime is hard to be Christian

  485. Sometime it's difficult when the road is rough and the going gets tough and it looks like everybody's getting ahead of you and

  486. Everybody's doing better than you are doing and

  487. Everybody's life seems to be on a keel that your life is not on

  488. You look at them on Facebook and they look so good and look like life is just going their way

  489. And then you look at them on tiktok and it looked like they're just having such a good time

  490. But that's one day out of

  491. 365 days

  492. You don't know how much hell they've had those other day

  493. You don't know how mean they've been those other days

  494. You don't know how ugly life has been for them those other days, but you are the thank God
