  1. well welcome to church this morning my

  2. name's I am the pastor here and this is

  3. your first time

  4. welcome you've been here for a while

  5. welcome

  6. to2 I missed the picnic last week been

  7. so thr me into pre first week back it's

  8. actually pretty ex if someone's got

  9. theck the bring it up I don't know

  10. wherever but we'll get into it

  11. 2025 it's a time of renewal as we've

  12. been talking about has been a

  13. message that's been communicated a

  14. little bit at Church online on Church

  15. Facebook but we really believe that 2025

  16. can be a time where our Spirits are

  17. renewed in our lives see renal in our

  18. our own lives families in those that we

  19. um in the lives of those that we care

  20. about

  21. and really really simply renewal starts

  22. to take place when we put Jesus first in

  23. all that we do it's really simple that's

  24. this idea of wholeheartedly January

  25. that's this idea of wholeheartedly

  26. following Jesus so I think to start the

  27. year let's dig into how we can live

  28. wholeheartedly how does that sound cool

  29. now I'm going to pray and get into

  30. it father we thank you for this morning

  31. we thank you for the fact we could GA

  32. together again what a joy it is to be in

  33. your

  34. presence as a community of of people

  35. worship you as your church just pray

  36. that you give me the words and and the

  37. strength to communicate what you want to

  38. say I just pray that yeah this morning

  39. is a really special time your name we

  40. pray amen amen so I

  41. think sometimes when we talk about this

  42. idea ofed throw it around quite a lot at

  43. church but I think we take it at just

  44. space b as meaning with our whole Hearts

  45. we throw around the word so much in

  46. church so why do we struggle to live out

  47. of that conviction sometimes I think a

  48. deeper understanding might help us to

  49. live it out truly but before I start I

  50. just want to I've been driving to the

  51. church this morning in the worship it's

  52. just been this message again and again

  53. of just how much we need and that has to

  54. be the starting point

  55. word about wholeheartedness it starts

  56. with needing God we get back to that at

  57. the

  58. end but and I want to give a chance

  59. later today at the end of this to to

  60. reaffirm that commitment to to follow

  61. God with our whole Hearts to follow God

  62. whole heartly so I just thought maybe

  63. let's approach it thoughtfully before

  64. taking that first

  65. step that step this year into committing

  66. to yeah giving God your whole

  67. heart um we're gonna go way back into

  68. ancient

  69. Israel all right it's on um Dropbox if

  70. you can find anyway we're gonna go

  71. without it for a second

  72. um assum these things happen right I've

  73. been away a

  74. mon my bad all right so we're gonna go

  75. back to Asian Israel we're going to go

  76. back three 3,000 odd 4,000 years to

  77. pretty much um very close to start of

  78. the Old Testament where you have these

  79. Israelites who are trying to follow this

  80. God they've escaped Egypt um they're

  81. walking in the wilderness in this desert

  82. and they're trying to figure out how to

  83. live out their lives well how to follow

  84. God um and perhaps it's going well

  85. perhaps it's not this if you read

  86. through like Exodus and the early books

  87. of the Bible you see that there are

  88. quite a few ups and downs and and the

  89. UPS are quite amazing like God a red sea

  90. and and the Israelites walk through it

  91. and Escape Egypt and the lows are quite

  92. profoundly bad where where thousands of

  93. people are struck down so they don't get

  94. it quite right but in Deuteronomy

  95. there's this beautiful prayer it's

  96. called the Shamar and um it's this

  97. prayer and I I'll run through some quick

  98. some quick facts but the sh shamay is

  99. taught by Moses before he died to the

  100. Israelites in the wilderness it's in

  101. this book of Deuteronomy um it's called

  102. the Great commandment it's the Comm God

  103. instructed Moses with to teach to those

  104. entering the promised land all the law

  105. all the writings of Exodus Leviticus

  106. Numbers The Ten Commandments all of it

  107. boiled down to this commandment and I

  108. wanted to surprise you with it but it's

  109. up there already um it's a be it's a

  110. short but beautifully put prayer um and

  111. it goes like this here oh Israel the

  112. Lord Is Our God the Lord alone you shall

  113. love the Lord your God with all your

  114. heart and with all your soul and with

  115. all your strength

  116. Shamar has been taught across

  117. generations of Jews to be prayed morning

  118. and night um some Jews still pray it to

  119. this day and this this beautiful prayer

  120. said by Moses which just remember Moses

  121. was the one who at the burning bush said

  122. to God I can't speak well I don't have

  123. it in me I can't lead the Israelites and

  124. and he is the one who delivered this

  125. this beautifully put prayer who which we

  126. don't even get to see the full like

  127. measure of how how well it's worded

  128. because we speaking in English and in

  129. the Hebrew it draws out even more

  130. understanding but just take that as an

  131. encouragement to not limit God in your

  132. own life and and what he could do when

  133. you don't feel like you're good

  134. enough so I'll read it one more time

  135. here oh Israel the Lord Is Our God the

  136. Lord alone you shall love the Lord your

  137. God with all your heart with all your

  138. soul and with all your

  139. strength so there you have it that is

  140. wholehearted living um and Jesus in in

  141. Matthew 22 teach that all of scripture

  142. hangs on this command to love God with

  143. all our heart soul and strength Jesus

  144. also teaches that one um one there's one

  145. other command that all of scripture

  146. hangs on after loving God with all your

  147. hearts soul and strength which is anyone

  148. know love your neighbor oh you guys are

  149. awesome we're sharp at the start of this

  150. year it's good all right so without

  151. wholehearted love for God the rest of

  152. scripture has no point um the Shamar is

  153. the first and greatest commandment um

  154. but without it the rest of it I don't

  155. think adds up I would argue there's no

  156. point in even trying to understand the

  157. Bible unless wholehearted love for God

  158. is the goal God is love he loves his

  159. people and asks us in return to love him

  160. as number one with all your heart and

  161. all your soul and all your might even

  162. loving your neighbor has no point

  163. without this Covenant and you might see

  164. these days online and in different

  165. places people who break down the Bible

  166. and anal beautiful book and there's so

  167. much meaning drawn out of it but they

  168. don't analyze it from a perspective of

  169. of this of this teaching of of of what

  170. all the scripture hangs upon which is to

  171. love God with all the heart soul and

  172. strength and I just um just to be wary

  173. that to those people who perhaps aren't

  174. coming from that perspective of loving

  175. God because it can lead them astray but

  176. let's look a bit more closely at these

  177. three terms heart soul and strength

  178. because I think there's a bit of meaning

  179. we can draw

  180. out and I'll just start first word in

  181. this sh here before here Israel um is

  182. there's a lot more going on than just

  183. here it doesn't communicate in English

  184. the measure of the word as it's meant to

  185. be um understood in Hebrew and it just

  186. gets a bit lost so I want to jump into

  187. it so this word here in the Hebrew it's

  188. Shar uh it's shama everyone says shama

  189. great it shows up 1,159 times the Bible

  190. just so you know so it's said quite a

  191. lot and it quite simply means to hear to

  192. listen to or to obey in ancient Jewish

  193. language um fascinatingly enough in

  194. ancient Hebrew there's no separate word

  195. for aate there's no separate word to

  196. carry out the wishes of someone to

  197. listen and to act to listen and to obey

  198. were two sides of the same coin it's not

  199. some passive hearing and not responding

  200. this isn't someone telling you to do the

  201. dishes while tiing is on if you watch

  202. that game

  203. show it's ridiculous show it draws you

  204. in I tell

  205. you uh to hear is to listen and respond

  206. to hear takes effort and action remember

  207. that whenever you see the word here in

  208. the Old Testament it's a God command

  209. it's not a human option don't just hear

  210. pay attention focus respond so here when

  211. you're seeing that at the start just

  212. remember that when into the rest of

  213. these so heart the next word that I want

  214. to look at the first word of these three

  215. heart soul and strength the Hebrew word

  216. is laab everyone say laab sounds a bit

  217. like a heartbeat right laab laab anyway

  218. I don't know um that'll help you

  219. remember it right um it stands for heart

  220. understanding or mind and traditionally

  221. speaks uh traditionally in the Bible

  222. speaks of three parts of us our thoughts

  223. our minds our emotions our feelings and

  224. our will also known as desires or our

  225. choices um this sometimes includes the

  226. material part of us the physical as well

  227. but you have to think of the heart as

  228. not just our feelings but as our

  229. thoughts and our like our mind and our

  230. will like as our desires or our choices

  231. it's not um written in the Bible in the

  232. same way we understand it in the modern

  233. context when we talk about following

  234. your heart and having a heart after God

  235. things like that um the Israelites did

  236. not have a sophisticated understanding

  237. of human anatomy

  238. um and that is something we very much

  239. take for granted you can imagine back

  240. 4,000 years ago how mysterious some

  241. parts of the human anatomy would be like

  242. take the brain you're pulling that apart

  243. as a as a surgeon or whatever they had

  244. back then you just have no clue how

  245. things work to be honest so just think

  246. about this really simply anatomically

  247. just as the heart pumps blood to all the

  248. parts of the human body the heart was

  249. understood as the center of all parts of

  250. human existence

  251. everything inside of us so to love God

  252. with all a heart is to love God with

  253. everything inside of us that's heart

  254. let's look at Soul Hebrew word for soul

  255. is nefesh everyone say

  256. nefesh thank you um it stands for soul

  257. self life creature person living being

  258. it's used to refer to the whole person

  259. or the whole creature you don't have in

  260. the flesh you are in the flesh you are a

  261. soul nefes is your whole physical

  262. existence your life force and physical

  263. being all that we are and we get lost in

  264. this sometimes because Greek philosophy

  265. teaches that soul and body are two

  266. separate things and this is something

  267. that came straight after the Bible and

  268. influenced a lot of schools of thought

  269. even in the early church so you end and

  270. and in modern day you think of um

  271. teachers like Plato and Aristotle and

  272. and the impact they had on on all sorts

  273. of philosophy so we have this um this

  274. conf where Greek philosophy says that

  275. soul and body are separate but ancient

  276. Hebrew understanding believed that Soul

  277. was the whole physical existence and

  278. regardless of what you believe um you

  279. have to read the Bible in that ancient

  280. Hebrew perspective so soul is your whole

  281. physical existence and quite similarly

  282. to Heart how heart is seen anatomically

  283. as um the center of all of human

  284. existence Soul actually translates

  285. closely to throat um and if you think

  286. really simply anatomically as we'll do

  287. for the last time today uh breath enters

  288. in and out of the throat food enters in

  289. and out of the throat we speak in and

  290. out of the throat so without a deeper

  291. understanding of what's going on inside

  292. just as the heart was seen as the center

  293. of human existence the ancient

  294. Israelites saw the throat as the

  295. expression of living the um a coming and

  296. going of each part of our being

  297. everything is kind of the the Gateway I

  298. don't know how you want to see it but

  299. see it as as part of

  300. ourselves so to love God with all your

  301. soul is to love God with all your being

  302. everything that you have so let's look

  303. at strength as well strength it looks a

  304. bit funny here but it's May everyone say

  305. may may put a bit of mustard on that it

  306. Mayo Mayo all

  307. right stands for strength or might or

  308. muchness or force or abundance it also

  309. is used actually it's most often the

  310. used as an adverb um an adverb is

  311. a that's a

  312. verb what's an adverb

  313. guys describing a verb there we go

  314. yeah there you go but that was that was

  315. always the one I forgot in school so I

  316. don't blame you guys um but

  317. interestingly it's most often used as an

  318. adverb so if you think of Genesis when

  319. God created the world um he looked at

  320. his creation and saw it was very good

  321. the word for very there is May um but

  322. use as a noun to articulate just how

  323. much you are to love the Lord so with

  324. with all your strength to love God with

  325. all our might is to love him with the

  326. full extent of what we have all of our

  327. like muchness all that we have and that

  328. doesn't just involve like like all of

  329. our effort but it's like love him with

  330. everything that we have so every moment

  331. every opportunity with all our ability

  332. with all our

  333. capacity so as we get to a summary here

  334. here these three terms heart soul and

  335. strength are not written alongside each

  336. other as some um as some way to

  337. understand like how the human functions

  338. but together they it poetically command

  339. a person to love God with their whole

  340. selves with all the different parts of

  341. you there's only one way to follow God

  342. that is with every fiber of your

  343. being all of your

  344. intentions all that you are and all that

  345. you have to give that's the Shar

  346. and it's very cool but perhaps it

  347. doesn't tell us um so much about why we

  348. struggle to follow this command God

  349. gives us to follow him wholeheartedly it

  350. tells us what to do but not so much why

  351. we so bad at doing it so let's dial in

  352. to Hearts because this is what we're

  353. talking about when we speak of

  354. wholeheartedness and I think it's really

  355. something interesting to draw out of the

  356. ancient understanding of heart that we

  357. miss in modern

  358. culture because as I said before our

  359. modern understanding of heart revolves

  360. predominantly around emotions we follow

  361. our hearts we have a heart for

  362. others Etc but what God is asking of us

  363. is more than just our emotions feelings

  364. are a good start but they're not enough

  365. God doesn't ask us for just our

  366. feelings if the understanding of heart

  367. also meant our thoughts and our

  368. intentions it changes how we try to be

  369. hard we can't just throw our passion

  370. into it passion is great but it's not a

  371. reliable source of of energy like for

  372. example I love youth ministry but I

  373. can't say I'm passionate about cleaning

  374. or discipline and I'll quickly lose

  375. heart if I'm driven by Passion alone and

  376. we get some fun times at youth I was

  377. cleaning the toilet a couple years ago

  378. and I found a full meat pie in there

  379. that was pretty cool had to scoot that

  380. out and that was fun but cleaning not

  381. that fun

  382. so um and those who know me know I

  383. absolutely uh do not oh I mean

  384. traditionally I hated telling youth off

  385. i' let them get away with too much and

  386. I've had to learn to actually be

  387. disciplined um and and

  388. and give consequences when they needed

  389. but um it's not something that's been

  390. traditionally easy for me or fun

  391. so even though we can't be driven by

  392. Passion alone at the same time following

  393. God with my mind is not enough either if

  394. it's all intellect and thought and not

  395. grounded in our choices and how we feel

  396. this also leads to a conflict in

  397. ourselves a disagreement like for

  398. example I I really struggle with ending

  399. up too intellectual sometimes um I feel

  400. like sometimes I get up here at the

  401. front and I'm preaching sermons and it's

  402. a bit of a head exercise where I I spend

  403. a bunch of hours preparing before

  404. sharing for 30 minutes with you all

  405. talking about words and tossing up ideas

  406. and there's an element of almost

  407. procrastinating going and living it out

  408. because action is far more scary than

  409. just talking about it like we could sit

  410. here and talk about God for ages but

  411. without the action side of it without

  412. the response at the end of it often

  413. enough we will just end up with God in

  414. our heads and not anywhere else and not

  415. out in the community around us so we

  416. need to act and make choices too but

  417. choices alone you guest falling short

  418. too too often in church we act every

  419. week we show up to church we help out we

  420. serve because it's the dumb thing maybe

  421. it once had purpose but it slowly

  422. withered away after a few years of

  423. monotonous patterns and I don't know if

  424. this is going to play we're gonna give

  425. it a go I've got here it's actually a

  426. video um but I don't know if it'll play

  427. anyway you can see a cow I went to a

  428. Dairy when I was on the honeymoon with

  429. Emily feels pretty good uh it's called

  430. PE gner Dair man on the East Coast p and

  431. means means the coming together of two

  432. rivers or

  433. something ni that's terrible anyway

  434. um yeah so I will describe that in a sec

  435. but the idea of Pana it was the first

  436. dairy in Australia to have um automated

  437. milking of cows so these cows would go

  438. into this yard um these dairy cows would

  439. walk through they would see um a little

  440. Gap that they'd walk into and then a

  441. machine would come use lasers to to

  442. figure out where the ERS were um latch

  443. on and milk the cow for however long was

  444. needed they could get milked up to three

  445. times a day and then once they were done

  446. they were able to walk out uh eat some

  447. food as a bit of a treat get a back

  448. scratch that thing on top of it is like

  449. a a rotating um like car wash sort of

  450. thing that just scratches scratches

  451. their which is really lovely so they get

  452. a bit of a Trea and what these cows end

  453. up doing is times a day they will walk

  454. around the precincts walk into the dairy

  455. the the yard they would try and do it

  456. more but they have tags on them that

  457. stop them from going through more than

  458. three times but they just their life

  459. revolves around walking uh into the

  460. cattle yard getting milked walking back

  461. out sitting in the plane for a little

  462. bit and walking and getting milked and

  463. then walking out and then it's um it's

  464. really interesting how these cows have

  465. just got this programmed way of living

  466. but times I think church can be a little

  467. bit like that especially on a Sunday

  468. morning which is not just church itself

  469. but um we end up just coming and going

  470. and and getting through the week and

  471. coming and going and getting through the

  472. week and if that's faith I don't really

  473. want to be a part of it I got to be

  474. honest with you um if we act on the

  475. basis of of just cause that's not what

  476. God is asking of us either and

  477. eventually you probably get sick of it

  478. and and leave anyway faith has to be

  479. more than that talk about following

  480. Jesus's journey and this adventure and

  481. that's because every day of following

  482. God should be different every day is a

  483. different challenge it's a different

  484. opportunity to love someone it's a

  485. different chance to bring his kingdom

  486. into this world and that's a huge

  487. opportunity and a huge blessing and

  488. privilege to be a part

  489. of

  490. so bring it back our heart biblically

  491. speaking is made up of our feelings our

  492. minds and our choices to be is to bring

  493. all three together for one thing to

  494. follow him it's the greatest Journey

  495. it's the greatest challenge it's the

  496. most

  497. lifegiving commitment a person can make

  498. and we're in here in this first service

  499. in this building of 20125 and gathered

  500. together to worship god with um hearts

  501. and souls and minds and um it's we're

  502. talking about 2025 as a real opportunity

  503. for Renewal and renewal as we said to

  504. take place when we put Jesus first in

  505. all that we do and I reckon 90% of

  506. people in this room would say yeah

  507. Bonito I'm going to put God first this

  508. year I feel like that's the intention I

  509. feel like if I talk to people if they

  510. have any business being part of this

  511. community called the church it's kind of

  512. what we're here to do we're here to seek

  513. God

  514. wholeheartedly but if I can reflect on

  515. example of our lives and my own and

  516. those around me our motivations and our

  517. intentions so of don't become our

  518. reality and it's not that we don't try

  519. it's that that we

  520. fail it's like there's a conflict in our

  521. hearts and it's really interesting

  522. because um just quickly the Bible speaks

  523. of the heart in so many different ways

  524. you talk um there's a proverb that talks

  525. about guarding your heart for it's where

  526. Life Starts and Jeremiah says that the

  527. heart is dangerous he says that the

  528. heart is deceitful Above All Things who

  529. can understand

  530. it but

  531. conflict of our hearts that we so often

  532. experience in this broken World in this

  533. world that we have

  534. sinned maybe we can understand what

  535. causes us to stumble when we try again

  536. this year maybe just maybe we can do a

  537. little bit better and a really good

  538. analogy of how this plays out it's

  539. actually in the parable of the S so I'm

  540. going to jump to Matthew um Jesus is

  541. teaching Parable here to his followers

  542. and um this Parable is written as an

  543. example of the different responses to

  544. hearing the gospel but I firmly believe

  545. that in the same way the conditions of

  546. our hearts continue to shape how you

  547. receive Jesus and respond to him and

  548. Jesus explains this himself soon after

  549. so let's read it

  550. here sorry thank you all right so the s

  551. that same day Jesus went out of the

  552. house and sat by the lake such large

  553. crowds gathered around him that he got

  554. into a boat and sat in it while all the

  555. people stood on the shore then he told

  556. them many things in Parable saying a

  557. farmer went out to sew his seed as he

  558. was scattering the seed some fell along

  559. the path the birds came and ate it up

  560. some fell on Rocky places where it did

  561. not have much soil it sprang up quickly

  562. because the soil was shallow but when

  563. the sun came up plants were scorched and

  564. they withered because they had no root

  565. other the seed fell among Thorns which

  566. grew up and choke the plants

  567. other seed fell on good soil Where It

  568. produced a crop 160 or 30 times what was

  569. sewn Whoever has ears let them

  570. he now just so we're clear the condition

  571. of the soil in this Parable refers to

  572. the condition of our

  573. hearts and we have four examples of

  574. conditions of soil and um and what ends

  575. up happening when the seed is is is

  576. scattered the seed being the message of

  577. of of Jesus the kingdom of heaven so the

  578. first one obviously when um and Jesus

  579. I'll actually read it how Jesus explains

  580. it a bit later on which he was so kind

  581. to do because it's nice that we get a

  582. clear interpretation from Jesus himself

  583. about what this Parable means but it

  584. says when anyone hears the message about

  585. the kingdom and does not understand it

  586. the evil one comes and snatches away

  587. what was sewn in their heart this is the

  588. seed sewn along the path and some people

  589. hear the message of of the Kingdom but

  590. don't let it penetrate their hearts they

  591. are like the hard earthy path and the

  592. seed get snatched away and these are

  593. those who hear about Jesus and do

  594. nothing and nothing changes in their

  595. hearts some pretty pretty black and

  596. white the second example is a bit more

  597. is a bit more layered and Jesus says the

  598. seed falling on Rocky ground refers to

  599. someone who hears the word and at once

  600. receives it with joy but since they have

  601. no root they last only a short time

  602. trouble or persecution comes because of

  603. the world they quickly Fall Away some

  604. people hear the good news and receive it

  605. with joy we see it all the time but the

  606. root and the depth and the

  607. thoughtfulness isn't there like the sun

  608. external pressures wither away their

  609. faith and um in the context of of what

  610. we're talking about today these are

  611. people who hear the word and receive it

  612. but perhaps it's all feelings and

  613. emotions and it's not there's no there's

  614. no depth to it

  615. feelings are great don't get me wrong we

  616. have to feel deeply in order to live

  617. well but here is a warning from Jesus

  618. that how we feel has to lead to more

  619. when our head and our heart figuratively

  620. speaking is in sync it plays out in the

  621. choices that we make each

  622. day and we that brings us to the third

  623. example the seed um falling on the

  624. thorns and Jesus says the seed falling

  625. on the Thorns refers to someone word but

  626. the worries of life and the

  627. deceitfulness of wealth CH the world

  628. making it

  629. unfruitful and in context I think it

  630. simply means these some people discover

  631. Jesus but never allow the call to follow

  632. him to take hold in their life and as

  633. the priority of their life the Warriors

  634. and commitments of life and the

  635. temptation to put other things above God

  636. wins out ultimately

  637. just another side note Jesus uses this

  638. word deceitfulness and just so we clear

  639. here if someone is deceived that person

  640. does not know it so take note that these

  641. Thorns are subtle and silent and we

  642. could all be facing them and we could

  643. all be experiencing them in our own

  644. lives even when we don't know it seed

  645. falling among the Thorns refers to

  646. someone who hears the word but the

  647. Warriors of life and the deceitfulness

  648. of wealth choke the word making it

  649. unfruitful that person does not reject

  650. the word that person does not not

  651. believe that Jesus is Lord but that

  652. person does not Place Jesus on the

  653. throne of their hearts that person does

  654. not make Jesus the priority of their

  655. lives and when you don't do that

  656. everything else is going to BU for that

  657. priority on your life and it's

  658. ultimately going to choke the faith that

  659. you did

  660. have so often we don't put God first

  661. because quite frankly we do not shape

  662. our lives in a way that puts him first

  663. maybe it's and what I mean by that is

  664. perhaps your lifestyle is built in such

  665. a way that it is impossible to put God

  666. first without changing a few things

  667. maybe you're just distracted maybe

  668. there's too many other things going on

  669. and you're not putting God first and

  670. let's be real even when we've created a

  671. lifestyle that allows us to seek God

  672. wholeheartedly and our choices match our

  673. intentions and everything should be

  674. great we fail to do

  675. so why because maybe there's a part of

  676. us that simply just doesn't want to

  677. we're trapped by another snag the worst

  678. of them all and that is sin plain and

  679. simple sin that this part of us like we

  680. all have sin and this part of us doesn't

  681. want us to have our choices defined by

  682. what brings us closer to God's will for

  683. our lives is part of us wants control

  684. the sinful side of us Wants to Rule our

  685. lives and that's why we will always fail

  686. because there is no way to break out of

  687. sin in this world

  688. but there's good news and that good news

  689. is that the farmer never stops

  690. scattering

  691. seed for as long as this Earth keeps

  692. turning the father never stops loving us

  693. with his whole being and so long as he

  694. loves us there will be opportunity it

  695. will be Revelation it'll be a chance to

  696. do things over so have hope the farmer

  697. remains scattering seed no matter the

  698. condition of the soil offering himself

  699. no matter the state of our hearts his

  700. love for us is equal and

  701. unmeasurable so we have this fourth

  702. example of soil and just remember that

  703. there are those who receive the seed and

  704. understand it with open hearts and in

  705. this version of the story of the parable

  706. of the sorus in mark it says that they

  707. hear the word and accept it this is the

  708. shama this is listening and hearing and

  709. obeying with all your being emotions

  710. mind and will

  711. but let's talk about how this plays out

  712. in our lives

  713. ourselves who's responsible with money

  714. here those close to me will know that

  715. I'm not um but I do really try I really

  716. try um and what's the first step to

  717. trying to save

  718. money after admitting you have an

  719. issue mom said marrying Emily it's

  720. actually pretty good um a budget is what

  721. I was gonna say so once you've decided

  722. you're sick of leaving paycheck to

  723. paycheck and you want to figure things

  724. out a budget is a Savvy First Step take

  725. stock of the bigger picture of your life

  726. and and move things around to make it

  727. easier to manage and save money and I

  728. would say that's us engaging our minds

  729. engaging our our thoughts to help us

  730. save money using Our Brands um but who

  731. knows that making a budget alone does

  732. not stop the issue if you really want to

  733. spend money you will spend money I've

  734. learned that

  735. numbers on a page Aren't Enough

  736. day-to-day choices are required of you

  737. choosing not to get Milo cereal even

  738. though it's un

  739. special that's Emily sorry um resisting

  740. the three for three for10 deal on

  741. chocolate blocks um yeah if you've made

  742. it this far and you've managed to make a

  743. budget and you've cut out the bad

  744. choices honestly credit to you you're

  745. you're doing a great job this is us Mak

  746. in choices to save money but who has

  747. made it a few days into a commitment

  748. like this before throwing it away not

  749. because of some need to spend money but

  750. purely because you felt like it we

  751. couldn't control our desire to buy

  752. something it's hilarious how many times

  753. I've made the intentional decision to

  754. save money eat healthier make my own

  755. lunch avoid the cafe skip the

  756. Panini only to use that choice to

  757. justify getting pizza the same night

  758. I'll say to M I'm so stoked we cook

  759. dinner tonight instead of going out want

  760. to go get ice

  761. cream in the same

  762. sentence I think this is us letting our

  763. emotions decide what we

  764. do see wholehearted living requires all

  765. aspects of our being to work together

  766. single-mindedness so choosing to eat

  767. more healthily or be more responsible

  768. with money these are Lifestyles will

  769. quickly look to prioritize but just

  770. choosing to prioritize them and even

  771. making the necessary changes to

  772. accommodate them to accommodate these

  773. priorities it doesn't often stop us from

  774. failing to live them out um sin and

  775. Brokenness are actually not easy

  776. obstacles at all and that's okay because

  777. there's good news the good news the seed

  778. is that we have the Savior ready to help

  779. us I might get the band back up because

  780. we we spend some more time in worship

  781. today and I really think it's important

  782. for us start the year but something I am

  783. learning lately and I've learned this

  784. morning and I've learned for like every

  785. time I go back to God and talk to him is

  786. the importance of having a really deep

  787. understanding of just how much we need

  788. Jesus the first purpose of the Shamar

  789. was for the Israelites to acknowledge

  790. the Lord Yahweh as their God their deity

  791. their creator their

  792. sustainer and the one that they depend

  793. upon the Lord Is Our God until our need

  794. for him in all that we

  795. do and discover an urgency and a

  796. desperation to know him who will always

  797. struggle to follow Jesus well and put

  798. him

  799. first there you never get to a point in

  800. life where you don't need God like you

  801. used to you never get to a point in life

  802. where you and God are kind of peers

  803. sitting at a lunch table talking about

  804. the world together we're never equals

  805. with God we never get to a point where

  806. we're like oh thanks God for helping me

  807. out there I'm I'm doing good now I don't

  808. need you the same way as I did before

  809. and so often we actually believe that

  810. lie that that we we need that we've

  811. God's helped us and then one morning we

  812. wake up and we feel like we're doing

  813. pretty well ourselves we don't need God

  814. but it's not

  815. true we need God in every step of our

  816. journey I truly believe that in order to

  817. follow Jesus whole heartedly we have to

  818. accept that we wholeheartedly need Jesus

  819. in every

  820. way when we recognize our Brokenness and

  821. our need and offer this to God he can

  822. work with

  823. it what's the point of a pudget if

  824. you're in denial of needing

  825. it we are all broken and we all live in

  826. a broken world so often when we fail we

  827. feel unlovable

  828. worthless incapable we

  829. cowardly we've all been there and sin

  830. prays on these feelings by tempting us

  831. with a temporary Escape an alternative

  832. to following Jesus's way but these

  833. escapes Don't Last Only Jesus can free

  834. us permanently and how would argue that

  835. even when like there are moments where

  836. we fail and we see we need God but what

  837. about the moments that we don't fail and

  838. we still need God every

  839. t i s sat here this morning driving to

  840. church just blown away

  841. by the amount that I just relied on God

  842. even to prepare this message we need God

  843. to follow God we need God um before we

  844. can actually take this step to

  845. wholeheartedly follow

  846. him and in that when we recognize our

  847. need for God when we choose to seek

  848. Jesus sin will do whatever it t whatever

  849. it can to stop Jesus to stop ask from

  850. seeking Jesus

  851. wholeheartedly the Thorns will try to

  852. choke the will Scorch us the rocks will

  853. prevent his word from taking root and

  854. from us from having good soil but in

  855. good soil God can reveal and God Can

  856. Transform so to offer God our whole self

  857. is to not only hand him our broken self

  858. at the altar which we might do

  859. today and to offer God our whole self is

  860. to not hand him The Smiling front that

  861. we show everyone else it's our it's all

  862. that we are it's our broken tired being

  863. it's the person who sees the joys of

  864. life and celebrates with those

  865. around whole hearted commitment to God

  866. is all of

  867. this so let's bow our heads this

  868. morning today if you want to prioritize

  869. Jesus

  870. wholeheartedly let's start at the bottom

  871. let's start by taking a moment to reveal

  872. to yourself how much you need God

  873. we all need him all the Brokenness

  874. inside all the suffering you're

  875. facing perhaps just in the regular

  876. moments of life that we actually can't

  877. do without

  878. God only when all this stuff is offered

  879. to Jesus can he be your savior and take

  880. it tend to the soil of your heart look

  881. at the the condition of your heart and

  882. what condition it's

  883. in is your soil getting hard is it like

  884. hard-heartedness plaguing your

  885. heart is your is your heart shallow is

  886. there a lack of depth this

  887. year or are there Thorns that are trying

  888. to choke out what you believe and what

  889. you're

  890. about final encouragement before we

  891. worship this morning you are going to

  892. sin it's inevitable so don't let that

  893. worry you faith is defined by our

  894. willingness to seek God in our failure

  895. time and time again so this is your

  896. chance to try

  897. again I'm going to

  898. pray and um worship and take the

  899. opportunity to stand to kneel to lift

  900. your hands whatever however you want to

  901. offer yourself to God if you wish to do

  902. that this do

  903. that I just ask if you are going to take

  904. that step to follow God wholeheartedly

  905. this year give him your whole heart give

  906. him everything your your mind your your

  907. emotions and your

  908. choices hold this year with open hands

  909. and say God I'll actually let you do

  910. whatever you want to do with

  911. it renewal takes place and we put God

  912. first in all that we do

  913. so let me pray and then we'll spend some

  914. time in worship I don't want to rush

  915. this space to worship Peters take your

  916. time

  917. father we believe in you we believe that

  918. your will for us is

  919. good please help us to try again please

  920. help us this year to seek you

  921. wholeheartedly with everything that we

  922. have

  923. that though our heart can be in Conflict

  924. at times and that we may fail God that

  925. we continue to seek you and that we seek

  926. like we ask for your help in the very

  927. first step Lord that we know that

  928. without you we are

  929. nothing but that with you there's so

  930. much for us so much joy so much in life

  931. for us to

  932. experience let us sit in your Pres this

  933. morning let us rest in you let us see

  934. what you have for us and let us receive

  935. you with open hearts

  936. Lord we pray in your name amen
