  1. thank you good morning

  2. everyone I

  3. um I don't do this very often but I want

  4. to give a trigger warning to a sermon

  5. today um and know I'm not joking I'm

  6. serious that um we're g to we've been

  7. talking this month about um in this

  8. world you'll have trouble and we're

  9. going to talk a bit about Brokenness

  10. today and I know that when we talk about

  11. Brokenness it can actually do some stuff

  12. to us so

  13. I really want you to look after yourself

  14. today okay I don't I'm not going to

  15. intentionally try and say stuff but if I

  16. say stuff that triggers you in a way

  17. feel free to go and sit outside for a

  18. minute or throw something at me or

  19. whatever you want to do but um I said to

  20. my church once years ago I was preaching

  21. through a really difficult theological

  22. concept to understand I gave them Nerf

  23. balls and I said if I say something

  24. today that you don't understand just

  25. ditch Nerf po at me and I'll stop and

  26. we'll explain that a bit more uh I'm

  27. never going to do that again but someone

  28. suggested afterwards I should have given

  29. them eggs and I'm not sure what they

  30. meant by that but I really mean it like

  31. let's um just make sure you have some

  32. space to look after yourself today but

  33. let's

  34. pray Jesus we thank you that you love

  35. us and that your word promises us that

  36. as we gather together you you are in our

  37. midst you walk amongst us you are here

  38. present with us now whether we feel it

  39. or not whether we owledge it or not you

  40. are

  41. here and so Lord this time is yours Holy

  42. Spirit would you speak to us would you

  43. would you minister to us would

  44. you would you get past the surface stuff

  45. and speak deeply to our to our heart and

  46. to our soul today

  47. we ask it in your name Jesus our

  48. King Our Savior our

  49. Lord

  50. amen in this world you will have

  51. trouble has anyone here

  52. anyone to this point in your life never

  53. experience

  54. trouble one yeah well see me afterwards

  55. we can sort that that's

  56. fine pain is unavoidable right this is

  57. this is the life we live it's

  58. unavoidable it's part of our human

  59. experience pain and difficulty and

  60. struggle emotional pain physical pain

  61. spiritual pain struggle and and these

  62. feelings that sometimes we don't know

  63. what to do

  64. with some of you know that I had a

  65. really busy busy year last year um I I

  66. took stock of it at the end of the year

  67. actually I went and saw my counselor

  68. because I really needed to it just to

  69. unpack it all let me give you a brief

  70. rundown of my year last year um uh just

  71. before Christmas

  72. 2023 both my boss and my boss's boss

  73. quit which C created some instability at

  74. work early last year um I got a I got a

  75. promotion I got a new role and I um uh

  76. those of you don't know I work for

  77. Baptist World Aid and U my job now is

  78. that I manage the national team that

  79. does Church engagement for over a

  80. thousand Baptist churches in Australia

  81. with the work that we do overseas so

  82. it's a big job I I flew 30,000

  83. kilometers last

  84. year so quantis tells me in my

  85. app you you know the end of year wrap-up

  86. congratulations 29,800 something oh

  87. really no wonder I feel tired

  88. new job I was supposed to do a new job

  89. and lose my old job but um they didn't

  90. replace someone in my old job either so

  91. I did my new job and my old

  92. job flew 30,000

  93. K we had a family

  94. wedding we had a um uh baby grandchild

  95. born which is not not terrible but it's

  96. also just changed right between June and

  97. about August or September I've sort of

  98. lost track of it 13 people that we know

  99. died

  100. 13 Vicki's mom has dementia Vicki's her

  101. primary career and uh near in September

  102. and October she got sick she had covid

  103. and it became very clear she wasn't able

  104. to go home and look after herself so she

  105. went into care and we spent time

  106. cleaning out her house and putting her

  107. house on the market and all those all at

  108. the same time when I was unpacking that

  109. with my oh and I studied halftime I did

  110. a halftime uni course last year as

  111. well and it was just

  112. pressure always something going on never

  113. quite

  114. settled and what that time did for me

  115. was it made all the stuff that I had

  116. kept buried for a long time the pressure

  117. sort of just squeezed that stuff

  118. out um when I was

  119. seven seven or eight back in the 1920s

  120. or whatever that was I um I was

  121. diagnosed with

  122. ADHD and um my parents were the sort of

  123. parents with oh okay that explains a lot

  124. and then forget about it right so I was

  125. like this is who you are this is what

  126. you've got but just get on and do it and

  127. so that's what I did I just went on with

  128. life and for a long time I had some

  129. coping mechanisms but I realized um like

  130. I didn't even talk about it in fact last

  131. year in about August was the first time

  132. I told Vicki I was diagnosed with ADHD

  133. married 33 years she say you've never

  134. told me that before because I just

  135. didn't think about it I just thought I

  136. was

  137. strange but the pressure got to me and

  138. the all the things started happening and

  139. one of the things that um ADHD does is

  140. it I I don't process emotion

  141. well there's this

  142. disconnect between thinking and feeling

  143. and I live a lot in my head and not a

  144. lot

  145. here so I don't like quiet I don't like

  146. I go on silent Retreats once a year but

  147. I me the first silent Retreat I went on

  148. it was horrendous because I stopped for

  149. a second and all this stuff that was

  150. going on sort of bubbled to the surface

  151. I didn't like it one little bit because

  152. the other part of my personality is I

  153. have a personality type that wants to at

  154. all costs avoid

  155. pain most of us are like that but my my

  156. personality type is is heavy into that

  157. space so um what I do is I just move on

  158. I just don't process it so you put the

  159. ADHD and this personality type thing

  160. together I don't process pain I want to

  161. ignore it and move on and make out it

  162. never happened and just tell a joke and

  163. be happy and everything's

  164. good don't make me think about that but

  165. when 13 people die in 10 weeks or

  166. so and like family

  167. friends people that we love and

  168. know you can't contain it

  169. anymore and all this stuff started to

  170. pop

  171. out we

  172. all none of us like pain I don't think

  173. we mask it and we we push it away I had

  174. a year last year where I had to actually

  175. try and confront it I want to talk about

  176. that in a minute

  177. but I want to look at today with all of

  178. that as the background look at um the

  179. Beatitudes Sermon on the Mount St of The

  180. Sermon on the Mount it's and we just

  181. really quickly some context this is this

  182. is Earth shattering um the Theologian NT

  183. W in his introduction to his commentary

  184. um talking about the beatitude says

  185. tells this story of um uh the movie is

  186. it the right stuff is that the movie

  187. where they they're trying to break the

  188. sound barrier is that that movie I think

  189. you one of those you know and there's

  190. some sort of there's some conjecture

  191. about how true the movie is but in the

  192. movie you have uh the all these American

  193. Air Force and Military Pilots trying to

  194. to break the sound barrier to go faster

  195. than sound and um they can get up to the

  196. sound barrier they get there and when

  197. they cross over that threshold the

  198. planes were just exploding and the

  199. planes were crashing and lots of people

  200. either ejected just in time or lost

  201. their lives it was one of the riskiest

  202. things and then there was this guy

  203. called Chuck Jager you may have heard of

  204. him he in the movie now whether whether

  205. this is really true or not is is

  206. conjecture but in the movie what he's

  207. watching in this and suddenly

  208. realizes

  209. that when the planes go through the

  210. sound

  211. barrier the controls all work

  212. differently and so you in a normal plane

  213. you'd pull back to make the plane go up

  214. once you crush the sound barrier you

  215. have to push the joystick forward to do

  216. the same thing the controls work in

  217. Reverse there's this

  218. boom and then everything switches and

  219. this is a great picture of what Jesus is

  220. doing when he starts to um talk this the

  221. whole sermon on the out but in

  222. particular the Beatitudes there's this

  223. sonic boom that would have been

  224. felt and he's turning

  225. everything immediately upside down the

  226. controls work the other way now and and

  227. The Sermon on the Mount is really

  228. interesting because Matthew in his

  229. gospel you you may know this but Matthew

  230. in his gospel mirrors the Old Testament

  231. experience of the Jews so when Jesus

  232. stands up on the mount in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  233. Chapter 5 and gives this sermon there's

  234. a couple of things that have happened in

  235. deliberately the Matthew the way he

  236. tells the story the first thing is that

  237. Jesus and his family when when Jesus was

  238. a baby you remember there was a

  239. persecution and they fled to

  240. Egypt and so Jesus comes out of

  241. Egypt and then the next thing that

  242. happens is he meets John the Baptist and

  243. is's baptized and then he's on the

  244. mountain teaching which is an exact

  245. mirror of the Old Testament story of

  246. Israel where they were captive in Egypt

  247. where they come out of Egypt where they

  248. cross the Jordan across the river

  249. through Red Sea through the waters and

  250. then Moses stands up on the mountain and

  251. gives them the law can you see the

  252. parallel and so Jesus is doing Matthew

  253. is telling the story in exactly this way

  254. want you to understand what's going on

  255. is Jesus is redefin in

  256. everything the and the the Beatitudes

  257. are a really interesting thing The

  258. Sermon on the Mount was thou shout thou

  259. shout Thou shalt not you know all that

  260. sort of stuff it was the rules by which

  261. you live

  262. by if you do these things then

  263. everything will be okay what Jesus does

  264. in the Beatitudes is he flips that as

  265. well the Beatitudes are not meant to be

  266. a picture of this is how you live if you

  267. live like this then you're close to God

  268. if you live like this and everything's

  269. okay the Beatitudes and The Sermon on

  270. the Mount are actually an announcement

  271. that this is how it is

  272. now this is not a list of things to

  273. ascribe to this is what is

  274. happening let's see if this

  275. works turned it on that

  276. works this is from uh the message

  277. version

  278. when Jesus saw his ministry drawing huge

  279. crowds he climbed a hillside those who

  280. were apprenticed to him the committed

  281. climbed with him arriving at a quiet

  282. place he sat down and taught his

  283. climbing Companions and this is what he

  284. said you're blessed when you're at the

  285. end of your

  286. rope with less of you there is more of

  287. God and his

  288. rule let's just hold off for just a

  289. second let's just talk about that word

  290. blessed because is perhaps one of the

  291. most misused misunderstood words in our

  292. modern culture and in our church

  293. World blessed does not

  294. mean that everything is great and we all

  295. we all have our you know house and two

  296. cars and enough money in the bank to

  297. save a retirement and the 3 to six month

  298. emergency fund and all those other

  299. things right that's not what blessed

  300. means blessed does not mean happy it

  301. gets translated sometimes as happy happy

  302. but it's not happy the the Old Testament

  303. idea of blessed plenty of examples of it

  304. think of um you know the story of Jacob

  305. where Jacob has a night wrestling with

  306. God and in that process God touches his

  307. hip and dislocates his hip or does

  308. something to his hip so he walked with a

  309. limp for the rest of his time but also

  310. in that moment God renames

  311. him he renames him and he sets him on a

  312. different path and that is the idea of

  313. being blessed about being called by God

  314. acknowledged by God brought into God's

  315. family often

  316. renamed often giving a new purpose and a

  317. new Destiny that's the idea behind this

  318. Old Testament idea of blessed right

  319. that's different to like I'll bless

  320. you I'm so blessed today because like my

  321. wife's away on a weekend of retreat

  322. she may watch this afterwards so maybe

  323. not that that's not what I meant but you

  324. know what I mean we we see blessed is

  325. something that makes us feel good and

  326. happy but it's not

  327. that it's a whole lot deeper than

  328. that you're blessed when you're at the

  329. end of your rope you're blessed when you

  330. feel like you've lost what is most dear

  331. to you only then can you be embraced by

  332. the one most dear to

  333. you you're blessed when you're content

  334. with just who you are no more no less

  335. that's the moment you find yourselves

  336. proud owners of everything that can't be

  337. bought it's great phrasing isn't it

  338. you're blessed when you've worked up a

  339. good appetite for God he food and drink

  340. in the best meal you'll ever

  341. eat you're blessed when you care at the

  342. moment of being careful you find

  343. yourselves cared

  344. for you're blessed when you get your

  345. inside World your mind and your heart

  346. put

  347. right then you can see God in the

  348. outside

  349. world this is a pronouncement of

  350. Jesus that if you are like this if you

  351. are hurting if you are broken if you are

  352. grieving if you are feeling like you're

  353. at the end of your rope and there's

  354. nothing else to

  355. give you're actually blessed already

  356. not because of your circumstances it's

  357. not like oh you know I heard someone

  358. preach this once what I should do is I

  359. should try and become more poor so I

  360. could be more blessed like it's not a

  361. list of it's not a to-do list this is a

  362. pronouncement this is the reverberation

  363. the sonic boom of the Kingdom everything

  364. is flipped from

  365. here everything is

  366. flipped and God is with you imagine the

  367. crowds that heard this right when Jesus

  368. is delivering The Sermon on the Mount

  369. imagine the crowds the the poor the

  370. broken the rejected the the people who

  371. live in an occupied country the people

  372. who are paying crazy taxes to the Romans

  373. all these other things and what they

  374. hear

  375. is I'm blessed by God God hasn't

  376. forgotten

  377. me God is here with me in the midst of

  378. this and T WR says this is a call to

  379. live in the present in a way that will

  380. make sense in God's

  381. future to live in the present in a way

  382. that will make sense just after this

  383. Jesus goes on and we have the Lord's

  384. Prayer you know your kingdom come your

  385. will be done on Earth as it is in heaven

  386. that this is God's intention for us to

  387. live this way even if it doesn't feel

  388. like it's making sense

  389. now see the problem with

  390. pain is that if we avoid

  391. it and we

  392. do the avoidance of

  393. pain is now really commonly accepted in

  394. Psychology and

  395. therapy as the path to

  396. addiction that

  397. addiction and I'm you know like drug

  398. addiction alcohol addiction porn

  399. addiction eating addiction shopping

  400. addiction whatever the addiction is like

  401. you know we find all sorts of things but

  402. the the outworking of undal with

  403. pain and undal with trauma often leads

  404. us to seek comfort in other things we

  405. don't want to deal with the pain so we

  406. just find something to soothe the pain

  407. does that make

  408. sense that can be work that can be

  409. binging Netflix it can be seriously it

  410. can be

  411. Ministry it can be serving God or

  412. thinking we're serving

  413. God but what we're really trying to do

  414. is get that

  415. hit to make ourselves feel better and

  416. not actually deal with us it can be in

  417. relationships it's a temporary Escape

  418. but the problem is that temporary

  419. escapes often become permanent

  420. escapes just stop and think for a

  421. minute when you

  422. are at your worst you know the bits that

  423. you don't talk to other people about

  424. right but when you are stressed or when

  425. you are feeling abandoned or lonely or

  426. rejected or hurt or traumatized or

  427. whatever what's the thing you do to make

  428. you make yourself feel better

  429. you know what it is I'm not I'm not

  430. asking you to write it down on your

  431. survey form and hand it into B any none

  432. of that stuff this is you and God's

  433. stuff right but what's that

  434. thing you see what we do is we develop

  435. attachments because we might do

  436. something once oh that feels better our

  437. brain gets a dopamine hit and we all

  438. feel good and we do it again and we do

  439. it again and we do it again and we do it

  440. again and soon it becomes a thing the

  441. Bible has a word for those things the

  442. Bible has a word for places we go to be

  443. self soothed to feel

  444. better when we don't want to deal with

  445. our pain and we don't want to confront

  446. god with it you know what the Bible

  447. calls those things

  448. Idols that's what an idol is it's

  449. somewhere where you go when your life is

  450. out of control and you need to get some

  451. sort of sense of what's going on this is

  452. what you know in the Bible it's really

  453. clear we create this poll and we'll go

  454. and pray there and that that'll fix our

  455. rain issues or what you know what the

  456. things that are stressing us but we all

  457. have Idols we all have these

  458. attachments anything we go to to support

  459. our pain that is not God is an

  460. idol now I am discounting therapy and

  461. those things because you have to do that

  462. like seriously I have a relationship I

  463. pay a lot of money to go and see a

  464. therapist who tells me I'm being stupid

  465. and uh rolls his eyes at me and says

  466. we've talked about this before Steve I

  467. go yes I know we have just tell me

  468. again Dallas Willard who's a he died a

  469. few years ago now but was a writer in

  470. spiritual theology he

  471. says that even wanting to know God's

  472. will for our Liv lives is

  473. idolatry I'll just let that sit I'll

  474. explain it in a second no one's got up

  475. and walked out

  476. but he says it's because of this because

  477. most of us want to know God's will for

  478. our lives for the next 5 years or 10

  479. years not because we're so desperate to

  480. serve God in the way that he wants to

  481. call us to but we just want to feel sure

  482. that it's okay

  483. our life's going to be okay I tell you

  484. if God told me 10 years ago where my

  485. life would be today I don't think I

  486. would have wanted gone on that journey

  487. to get there right who's like that so

  488. let's be honest if we're saying God I

  489. just need to know what's going to happen

  490. in the next five

  491. years most of the time that is because

  492. we want to feel better about ourselves

  493. and that's

  494. idolatry that even God can become an

  495. idol in place of God

  496. that's scary isn't

  497. it instead of finding healing we become

  498. ins slaved to what once seemed like

  499. relief in Romans uh chapter 6 it says

  500. you are a slave to the one you

  501. obey you're a slave to the one you owe

  502. so if you are obeying something else if

  503. you are focusing on something else there

  504. something else even in the deepest

  505. darkest places where you just feel you

  506. need to be seen and need love and and

  507. need

  508. comfort if you're finding that anywhere

  509. other than in God then you're a slave to

  510. something else and you're not

  511. free yeah let me say this again this is

  512. not about judgment right this is a

  513. pronouncement that if that is you then

  514. Jesus says then you are blessed because

  515. the father is with you in this and so

  516. often in churches so often in

  517. religion we focus on the externals

  518. ah they're like that they're doing that

  519. again they should just stop

  520. that you know if you want God to love

  521. you just stop that thing if you want if

  522. you don't want to feel the shame of

  523. doing that thing again well just stop it

  524. and what we don't do is deal with what's

  525. actually at the root of that which is

  526. the the trauma and the pain and the

  527. difficulty that we carry that we're

  528. actually not willing to talk

  529. about but the Beatitudes are an

  530. invitation to bring our pain to

  531. God and to

  532. sit with

  533. him with

  534. it because true comfort and true true

  535. healing and true transformation is

  536. possible but often it's

  537. not magic and instant it actually means

  538. confronting some stuff that's going on

  539. for

  540. us Psalm

    Psalms 34:8

  541. 34:8 the Lord is close to the

  542. Brokenhearted and saves those who are

  543. crushed in

  544. spirit the Lord is close to the broken

  545. heart often when we feel that the place

  546. we go is anywhere but God because so

  547. often the behavior that sits over the

  548. the trauma and the pain and the

  549. emotion leads us to shame all the time

  550. I've done it again I've blown the credit

  551. card again I had a bad day day and I

  552. shopped or had a bad day and I went and

  553. ate all the things I shouldn't eat or

  554. drank the things I should whatever

  555. whatever the thing is spent too much

  556. time playing online games or spent too

  557. much time B binging Netflix or spent too

  558. much time at work and neglected my

  559. family because it's easier to just keep

  560. that at work than actually deal with the

  561. stuff that's going on at home that's

  562. causing me pain whatever those things

  563. are right you know what yours is we'll

  564. do a survey afterwards and you can we'll

  565. get everyone to we'll name them and get

  566. you

  567. toway there's no shame all right I

  568. really want you to hear there's no shame

  569. and no judgment I'm I'm talking to you

  570. today as someone who is exploring this

  571. harder in this part of my life than I

  572. ever have

  573. before it's been really really tricky to

  574. do so I want to give you four steps

  575. of what this is what I'm

  576. doing what I'm

  577. learning but hopefully it's it's helpful

  578. for you as well first one is this to

  579. actually honestly acknowledge your

  580. pain actually naming

  581. it that may be childhood trauma that may

  582. be broken relationships who knows knows

  583. what the thing is you know what your

  584. thing is and some of you right now are

  585. going I don't want to talk about

  586. that there's resistance already if you

  587. feel that resistance that's okay that's

  588. actually a God

  589. thing what I've had to do in the last

  590. six months working with my my counselor

  591. and my spiritual

  592. director is I've done a lot of

  593. journaling and a lot of actually not

  594. avoiding pain but sitting with it

  595. in small small doses CU you know I don't

  596. like it um but actually finding Qui time

  597. to sit down and think about those things

  598. that have been traumatic in my life and

  599. bring them before God and just Journal

  600. how I'm feeling something happens just

  601. in the actually naming

  602. it there's this biblical idea of lament

  603. right lament is biblical of of actually

  604. sitting in the pain and the grief and

  605. actually allowing it to to Bubble Up

  606. there's all sort different ways of doing

  607. it you can use the Psalms there plenty

  608. of Psalms that are just crying out to

  609. God God I can't do this

  610. anymore I often if I really need to feel

  611. the feels I'll tell you what I do um I I

  612. go into a room I turn all the lights off

  613. and light a candle and I play Leonard

  614. Cohen music

  615. especially his last album the one that

  616. was released just after he died just

  617. before he died around the time of his

  618. death like it's there's there's a song

  619. called you want it darker like it's

  620. depressing music but it is so cathartic

  621. for me that's what I

  622. do and then I just

  623. write and it's good that I write because

  624. my handwriting is terrible so I can

  625. never go back and read what I was

  626. actually trying to say it's just gets it

  627. out so first acknowledging your pain

  628. secondly

  629. turn to Jesus in The Suffering in the

  630. pain turn to him take it to him we've

  631. already talked about that this morning

  632. we've sung about it we've experienced it

  633. in communion that Jesus understands

  634. suffering he suffered more than any of

  635. us think about what Jesus went through

  636. on the cross that he took all the

  637. Brokenness all the pain all the sin of

  638. every human being that has lived did

  639. live and will ever

  640. live just think about that you know when

  641. your pain feels unbearable to

  642. Bear when it's like I can't do this

  643. Jesus took it for billions of people and

  644. the broken systemic structures of the

  645. world took all of that pain on himself

  646. and he bore that and he suffered with

  647. that so if anyone knows what suffering

  648. is it's

  649. him he's the place we should be running

  650. to not not

  651. avoiding and yet we do I'll just deal

  652. with this myself because then once I get

  653. myself sorted then I'll feel like I can

  654. go and talk to Jesus about it that's the

  655. shame talking and it's a lie it's a lie

  656. of the enemy Ben talked about last week

  657. and one of the reasons that we have this

  658. Brokenness is because we're in a war

  659. we're in a

  660. battle those of you who have kids think

  661. about how much you hate your children

  662. being in pain right moms especially dads

  663. yeah you know bit of Pain's good for

  664. them every now and then but you know

  665. what I mean

  666. right the way that you can hurt parents

  667. is to hurt their

  668. kids and I honestly believe this is one

  669. of the key tools that Satan uses to try

  670. and to try and needle

  671. God is to hurt his kids

  672. Satan loves hurting you because he

  673. thinks it's hurting

  674. God and creating distance between you

  675. and

  676. God the cross is the ultimate example of

  677. pain leading to

  678. Redemption thirdly seek community and

  679. support the the the solution I believe

  680. this with all my heart the solution to

  681. addiction solution to those unhealthy

  682. attachments

  683. is

  684. community it's actually doing life

  685. together the way we're meant to

  686. be authentically being with you know I

  687. had a pastor who used to say dirty

  688. washing should be washed not aired

  689. right and so you know this is we're not

  690. talking about let's all get up and share

  691. our deepest darkest stuff without find

  692. some people who you

  693. trust that can go on the journey with

  694. you I've got I've got a friend who works

  695. in um lives in Vancouver in Canada in

  696. the downtown east side it's one of the

  697. roughest uh roughest places in all of

  698. North America there are um about eight

  699. or 10 city blocks with about 10,000

  700. addicts in that

  701. space um open open drug dealing I

  702. visited him spent a week with him it was

  703. amazing open drug dealing going on you

  704. just walk in people just handing cash

  705. over um open prostitution on the street

  706. some of the women even have clothes

  707. on there are women who just disappear

  708. from the neighborhood the police don't

  709. hardly ever go into the neighborhood

  710. it's too scary for them the but there

  711. are there are stories over and over

  712. again of women who

  713. are off their faces on drugs selling

  714. themselves into prostitution and a car

  715. will come up they'll get in the car

  716. they'll go off with a guy and they're

  717. never seen

  718. again that's a regular story

  719. he wrote a book about this about

  720. addiction and and um and attachments um

  721. it's a challenging book because the F

  722. whole first half of the book is okay

  723. before we talk about how to deal with it

  724. in other people we need to deal with it

  725. in you first so I first time I read it I

  726. read the first seven or eight pages and

  727. put it away for a few months because I

  728. didn't want to face it right one of

  729. those sort of books

  730. but he says the way that we deal with

  731. this is in community with other people

  732. that's through small groups through

  733. church find a spiritual director if you

  734. don't know what it is come and talk to

  735. me or tell you about that find a

  736. counselor find someone that you can

  737. start to do this with with no judgment

  738. and no

  739. shame James 5 says confess your sins to

  740. one another pray for each other so that

  741. you may be

  742. healed there's something that loses its

  743. power when we speak it out and when we

  744. know someone else

  745. knows and loves us

  746. anyway and then

  747. fourthly embrace the blessing in

  748. Brokenness our suffering is not

  749. wasted our Brokenness isn't

  750. wasted God uses us uses it to shape us

  751. God uses

  752. it to change

  753. us when we surrender surrender our pain

  754. to God he transforms it into his

  755. purpose because that's who he

  756. is because that's what he

  757. does God gives good

  758. gifts you know there's that in part of

  759. The Sermon on the Mount if I ask God for

  760. bread will he give me a give me a stone

  761. or whatever it is and if I ask for a

  762. fish will he give me a snake to you know

  763. like God doesn't do that what God gives

  764. us actually when we ask for that what

  765. God gives us is

  766. himself what we find is that in the pain

  767. and in the Brokenness and in the trauma

  768. God is actually

  769. there transforming

  770. it and I think one of the

  771. most uh one of the things that holds us

  772. most captive especially if you've been

  773. in church for a long time especially if

  774. you've been a Believer for a long time

  775. and experienced pain and difficulty in

  776. that space whether the church has hurt

  777. you whether people who are supposed to

  778. know better uh hurt you whether whether

  779. um uh whether there's been broken

  780. relationships with friends or family or

  781. anything in church is that we ask God

  782. for stuff and it doesn't seem like

  783. anything changes and we become

  784. disappointed with

  785. God I've tried this

  786. God you didn't come through for me

  787. I cried out for you for years to save my

  788. marriage and it didn't happen I cried

  789. out for you for years to help my kid and

  790. it didn't happen whatever the thing is I

  791. don't know if I can trust you anymore

  792. God the world is broken and it happens

  793. inside the church I pulled literally I

  794. pulled up in the car this morning in the

  795. carp Park and I got a text message from

  796. a friend in another state who uh is a

  797. pastor being a great pastor Pastor for a

  798. lot of times saying I'm just sorry to

  799. dump this on you on a Sunday morning I'm

  800. just letting you know that I'm

  801. separating from my

  802. wife being in the church being a

  803. Christian does not exclude us from the

  804. suffering of the

  805. world but so often we take that on as

  806. disappointment

  807. and so I want encourage you maybe to

  808. start to take a step to trust God with

  809. it

  810. again just it's really hard I know how

  811. hard it is you know I'm preaching to

  812. myself as much as I am to you

  813. today but maybe one more

  814. go I've trying to maybe put that

  815. disappointment aside putting that stuff

  816. aside I've I've tried this 100 times

  817. maybe it's just the next

  818. time here's what I want to do to finish

  819. off just want to would you just close

  820. your

  821. eyes just sit for a

  822. minute and just think

  823. about what

  824. what's going on for

  825. you I don't want you to think about the

  826. idols I don't want you to think about

  827. the attachments oh just if I could just

  828. stop doing this if I could just none of

  829. that stuff

  830. today where's the seat of

  831. it and that if you are

  832. game would you just invite Jesus to

  833. sit with

  834. you in that pain in that trauma in that

  835. rejection anger bitterness grief

  836. whatever the whatever the thing

  837. is you

  838. just sit with

  839. it holy spirit would you come and just

  840. begin

  841. to minister to your

  842. people to bring your healing

  843. today thank you that we can trust you

  844. God we can trust

  845. you would you begin to bring freedom to

  846. your people today

  847. Lord just ask God what he wants you to

  848. do with that pain maybe maybe there's a

  849. prompt to go and see a counselor I know

  850. this counselors

  851. here talk to Ben about

  852. that maybe it's somewhere else maybe you

  853. need to talk to them maybe you need to

  854. pray with someone maybe you need to tell

  855. someone for the first time actually all

  856. this stuff is happening because this

  857. happened that's what I mean by

  858. triggering right so please I want it to

  859. be safe don't want you to walk out of

  860. here and feel like it's got

  861. worse I actually want you

  862. to move towards healing

  863. today we're just going to play a song

  864. the song is Beautiful it's called lean

  865. back just going to lean back in the

  866. loving arms of a father we just hold on

  867. to that stuff and just during this song

  868. just do that he lean

  869. back and allow God to start to speak to

  870. you comfort you
