  1. dear heavenly father we thank you for

  2. bringing us here this morning we thank

  3. you that your presence is here with us

  4. and I ask Lord that you open our eyes

  5. and ears to hear and see what you want

  6. us to hear today I pray that you use me

  7. as a vessel to share what you want me to

  8. share in Jesus name we pray

  9. amen so we've been doing a series on um

  10. living with trouble um so in January for

  11. those of you who took part in the

  12. wholehearted January reading plan we

  13. read through the Book of John we find in

  14. John 16 a couple of significant things

  15. that Jesus tells us he talks about the

  16. work of the Holy Spirit he talks about

  17. how our sorrow will be turned into Joy

  18. because Jesus Was preparing his

  19. disciples for when he leaves the Earth

  20. and then we read this in John

    John 16:33

  21. 16:33 or is it Matthew I think I've

  22. written the wrong

  23. anyway I have told you these things so

  24. that in me you may have peace in this

  25. world you will have trouble or

  26. tribulation but take heart I have

  27. overcome the world so the last couple of

  28. weeks we've been looking at the idea of

  29. living with trouble I'm not talking

  30. about living with your kids or your

  31. spouse that's a different kind of

  32. trouble but living with the trials and

  33. the tribulations that all of us face in

  34. life Ben spoke several weeks ago about

  35. why trouble is inevitable for Christians

  36. Steve spoke on finding blessings in our

  37. Brokenness and last week Ben shared on

  38. how we respond to trouble

  39. in John chapter 16 we understand that

    John 16 chapter mention

  40. Jesus is preparing his disciples to be

  41. prepared to experience trouble and how

  42. to navigate it when it

  43. happens today I want to speak on living

  44. with trouble how to navigate the

  45. challenges and the difficulties of Life

  46. how to find peace in the desert of

  47. troubles of life so I've called my

  48. sermon Adonai

  49. Roa and this will make sense later

  50. on how do we find peace when we are

  51. living with trouble the passage says

  52. that in him we may have peace in the

  53. world we will have

  54. trouble but he has overcome the world so

  55. to paraphrase this verse then yes in the

  56. world you'll have trouble you'll have

  57. tribulations but take heart he's

  58. overcome the world so through him we can

  59. have

  60. peace I looked in thesaurus and trouble

  61. can mean a lot of different things

  62. tribul ation stress trials anxiety

  63. suffering woe Misfortune breakdowns

  64. unrest Strife distress problems ordeals

  65. pain hardship misery and many other

  66. things the truth is that we have all

  67. been in times of trouble at least one if

  68. not all of those for me when I think of

  69. times of trouble when I would consider

  70. that I was living in trouble I think the

  71. most helpful thing for me was to know

  72. peace

  73. and here Jesus is telling us that we can

  74. find that in him simple end of

  75. message in trouble find peace in Jesus

  76. it seems so simple but I want to look

  77. today at how we can find peace in the

  78. midst of everything that goes

  79. on I want to read you Psalm

  80. 23 The Lord is my shepherd I shall not

  81. want he makes me lie down in Green

  82. Pastures he leads me beside Still Waters

  83. he restores my soul he leads me in Paths

  84. of righteousness for his name's

  85. sake even though I walk through the

  86. valley of the shadow of death I will

  87. fear no evil for you are with me your

  88. rod and your staff they comfort me you

  89. prepare a table before me in the

  90. presence of my enemies you anoint my

  91. head with oil my cup

  92. overflows surely goodness and mercy

  93. shall follow me all the days of my life

  94. and I shall dwell in the house of the

  95. Lord

  96. forever when I picture Psalm 23 I tend

  97. to picture a lush plentiful image of

  98. green grass like this little lamb there

  99. laying in the grass Shady trees sheep

  100. grazing streams running through a

  101. relaxing and peaceful environment a

  102. banquet with all the nicest foods and

  103. the extra trimmings blessings and

  104. abundance

  105. a life spent in the Lord's House so how

  106. does this apply to

  107. trouble we are reassured in verse four

  108. that even though we walk through that

  109. Valley of the shadow of death that he

  110. Comforts us and guides

  111. us Psalm 23 talks about the Lord being

  112. Our Shepherd Ben has shared about this

  113. before in the past about the Lord as our

  114. Shepherd his Shepherd's crook you know

  115. the the little shape of design of the

  116. crook it's designed to hook around the

  117. sheep and pull them back into line

  118. and as God intended it when he spoke of

  119. the shepherd the Sheep walked behind the

  120. shepherd in his safety to where he leads

  121. them I was thinking about this and I

  122. thought about this Psalm David lived in

  123. Bethlehem when he was young and a

  124. shepherd and after being a becoming a

  125. King David conquered

  126. Jerusalem if you look up a picture of

  127. the Judean Wilderness where David wrote

  128. this Psalm it paints a very different

  129. picture than the one I imagine and just

  130. describe to

  131. you for most of the year it looks like

  132. this scattered grass along dry Dusty

  133. paths where sheep must trust their

  134. Shepherd for every

  135. meal the Judean Wilderness is an area

  136. which is semi arid it's desolate there's

  137. a short period of green grass which

  138. grows in the spring after the winter

  139. rain but due to the environment it

  140. Withers away very quickly when the warm

  141. weather arrives for much of the year the

  142. grass is found growing in small toughs

  143. along the path sheep can only eat a

  144. mouthful or two then they need to look

  145. to their Shepherd to direct them to the

  146. next

  147. mouthful the Shepherds must know the

  148. landscape in order to find suitable

  149. pasture for their flock people don't

  150. live here commonly they would mostly

  151. come to seek Refuge or hide away from

  152. from more like cities or

  153. towns in Hebrew when David wrote I shall

  154. not want he used the phrase

  155. lka which is in Hebrew which translates

  156. to nothing will be missing from my life

  157. or I shall not

  158. want he wrote in Psalm 23 Adonai

  159. Roa which means the Lord is my shepherd

  160. I shall not want means the Lord I have

  161. in the Lord I have everything I

  162. need the idea of this verse is that God

  163. doesn't always give you what you want

  164. but he does give you what you need it's

  165. not geography it's

  166. context Psalm 23 1 and 2 the Lord is my

  167. shepherd I have everything I need he

  168. lets me rest in the grass and leads me

  169. be beside the

  170. streams you see the biblical definition

  171. of shepherding means daily guidance not

  172. endless

  173. Fields enough for now not endless

  174. provisions and trusting God as your

  175. Shepherd means trusting that when the

  176. paths are dusty he guides you when the

  177. grass is scattered he leads you when

  178. resources are scarce he

  179. provides sometimes you're not enough is

  180. is actually God's exactly what you

  181. need where reminded of this supply of

  182. daily need several other times in the

  183. Bible Matthew 6:11 Jesus teaches us how

    Matthew 6:11

  184. to pray and reminds us to ask each day

  185. give us today our daily bread give us

  186. today what we need to get

  187. through Jesus is asking us to come each

  188. day and ask for what we need to get

  189. through that day not the week you see

  190. here on Earth we get paid monthly or

  191. fortnightly

  192. and this is your work saying here this

  193. is what you

  194. need but you got to make it stretch out

  195. you've got to make it

  196. last it leaves no room for some people

  197. to even get what they need let alone

  198. what they

  199. want you see church on Sunday is good in

  200. fact it's great but God never meant for

  201. us to top up the tank weekly or

  202. fortnightly or monthly and then just try

  203. and make it

  204. last Jesus taught us here to come daily

  205. for what we need to make it through that

  206. day not weekly or monthly or once every

  207. 5 years we need to come to him

  208. frequently for each meal to come and say

  209. Lord give me today what I

  210. need in Exodus after Moses LED them out

  211. of Egypt the people were hungry they

  212. were in the desert they had

  213. nothing there the Lord said to Moses

  214. behold I will rain down bread from

  215. heaven for you each day the people are

  216. to go out and gather enough for that day

  217. in Exodus

    Exodus 16:4

  218. 16:4 so the Israelites did this some

  219. gathered more some gathered less when

  220. they measured it by the Omar he who

  221. gathered much had no excess and he who

  222. gathered little had no

  223. shortfall each one gathered as much as

  224. he needed to

  225. eat sometimes you may feel like you are

  226. wandering in the desert the days and the

  227. weeks and the years go by and you feel

  228. like you're still in that desert but God

  229. promises that he will sustain

  230. you you may reach your limit and think

  231. how much longer can this go on for you

  232. know for 40 years the Israelites ate

  233. Mana every day a daily provision of Mana

  234. by God for 40 years

  235. they ate daily until they came to a land

  236. where they could

  237. settle you know until you can settle

  238. until you can pass through to the other

  239. side of your troubles the Lord will

  240. provide your daily bread your daily

  241. needs enough to just get you

  242. through it is important to understand

  243. that God Made You stronger than you

  244. think you may be in a situation where

  245. you feel helpless or out of control or

  246. overwhelmed or anxious

  247. be broken or down but you are stronger

  248. than you think you are stronger than

  249. other people think you are and you are

  250. stronger than your

  251. circumstances psalm 55:22 reminds us to

    Psalms 55:22

  252. cast your burdens on the Lord for he

  253. will sustain

  254. you we are reminded to follow in his

  255. footsteps let the dust from his feet

  256. fall on your your feet you don't have to

  257. memorize the answers or know what to do

  258. just step where he steps love how he

  259. loved and live how he

  260. lived Jesus walked and taught through

  261. the desert you feel closest to him when

  262. you walk in his

  263. steps he tells us in Matthew 19 come and

  264. follow

  265. me I know when Julie shares with us she

  266. likes to give us examples of plants and

  267. trees and water and skies it's very

  268. inspiring Julie so let me try I'm going

  269. to tell you about a tree in the desert

  270. of Israel there's a tree that's called

  271. an acacia

  272. tree the acacia tree is a symbol of

  273. beauty and resilience it has the ability

  274. to adapt for symbiotic relationships and

  275. to provide essential resources for both

  276. wildlife and human communities

  277. the acacia tree teaches us something

  278. profound about surviving life's hardest

  279. moments not just surviving but

  280. thriving this is the tree that the

  281. Prophet Jeremiah had in mind when he

  282. said this in Jeremiah 7: 7 to8 blessed

  283. is the man who trusts the Lord whose

  284. hope is in the Lord for he shall be as a

  285. tree planted By the Waters that spreads

  286. out its roots by the river and shall not

  287. fear when heat comes its leaf shall be

  288. green it shall not be anxious in the

  289. year of drought and neither will it

  290. cease from yielding fruit you see the

  291. acacia tree has roots that cannot be

  292. shaken you can see in this picture where

  293. the stream has passed when there's rain

  294. you can see lines where the stream

  295. passes there's a firmness to its roots

  296. that give it

  297. permanence these trees don't just

  298. survive the desert the drought the

  299. trials the dry years of life life they

  300. thrive on it creating shelter and shade

  301. in the area around them Acasia trees

  302. don't just exist they

  303. ensure they don't just survive they

  304. sustain this particular photo which is

  305. hard to see of there's acacia trees and

  306. this is in the iny Nature Reserve in

  307. Israel in the judan desert Judean desert

  308. this is what we read about in the

  309. Bible if that doesn't Fascinate You it

  310. should these are the this is the

  311. environment that is described to us in

  312. the Bible the acacia tree serves as a

  313. habitat in this desert ecosystem of the

  314. Middle East different animals eat all

  315. parts of the acacia tree and they're one

  316. of the few plants that can provide green

  317. foliage even in the dry

  318. seasons without this tree many creatures

  319. would become extinct in

  320. Israel large animals benefit from its

  321. shade God instructed Moses to make the

  322. Ark of the Covenant with acacia

  323. wood do you know that it's believed when

  324. Jesus was crucified his crown of thorns

  325. would have been made from the branches

  326. of this tree which is covered with

  327. strong

  328. thorns in the same way God has built you

  329. for this he has built you with a

  330. capacity to have Roots deep enough in

  331. him to sustain you with the strength to

  332. withstand trials and inbuilt defenses to

  333. survive the harshest

  334. desert you have roots that can go deeper

  335. than fear strength that runs stronger

  336. than anxiety and a foundation that is

  337. firmer than your

  338. feelings how through the Shepherd that

  339. guides

  340. you see Jesus our God who leads you

  341. gives you Green Pastures in the

  342. springtime where you can walk wander and

  343. be

  344. refreshed the same God who leads you

  345. through the Summers the Wilderness the

  346. desert when you have nothing left to

  347. give leading you step by step to the

  348. next mouthful feeding you just enough to

  349. get you through until you are able to

  350. make it through the desert to be

  351. restored he guides us to give us

  352. peace when all you can see is dryness or

  353. hardship or Trouble When You See No Way

  354. Out no change on the horizon this is

  355. where God guides you step by step and

  356. speaks to you word by

  357. word I'll teach you another Hebrew word

  358. the word for Desert is midbar which

  359. comes from the root word daba which

  360. means to

  361. speak if you think about that the desert

  362. is not just where we struggle but it's

  363. where God speaks even in the desolate

  364. difficult and deserted desert even there

  365. God can and often does speak to us your

  366. hardest season might actually be Holy

  367. Ground there are numbers of people

  368. throughout the Bible from Abraham to

  369. Jesus himself every major biblical

  370. figurehead really who God chose to speak

  371. to in their hardest places in their

  372. deserts Moses was led through the desert

  373. in preparation of what was to

  374. come Elijah spent time in the wilderness

  375. John the Baptist lived in the wilderness

  376. even Jesus himself was led into the

  377. Wilderness by the

  378. spirit now your desert may look a bit

  379. different than that of the Judean

  380. Wilderness or the Middle Eastern sand

  381. Junes but the principle is the same your

  382. desert may be overwhelming anxiety maybe

  383. it's suffocating fear or crushing

  384. uncertainty maybe it's worry that drains

  385. away maybe it's an empty house or a

  386. hospital

  387. room perhaps it's a counselor's office

  388. or just a waiting

  389. season you see deserts are not detours

  390. they are Divine appointments your

  391. struggle is not wasted it is where

  392. wisdom

  393. speaks don't just ask God when when you

  394. will get out of the desert but ask him

  395. what you will get out of the desert

  396. instead of asking why am I here ask what

  397. are you trying to show me because

  398. sometimes God speaks loudest when life

  399. feels hardest he wants you to be still

  400. and listen for his voice in your desert

  401. in your times of

  402. trial sometimes when God speaks to us we

  403. don't like what he says

  404. how many times have you found yourself

  405. in a Wilderness and realized that you

  406. actually need to face a hard

  407. thing a tough decision an irreversible

  408. diagnosis a person who has wronged us

  409. maybe a person who you've wronged a job

  410. that you don't like a ministry that's

  411. failed you see often God leads us to

  412. face the thing that we most want to run

  413. away from

  414. in Genesis we read the story of Abraham

  415. and Sarah and

  416. Hagar when Hagar ran away from Sarah the

  417. angel of the Lord told her to go back

  418. that she must go back and face the

  419. mistress who treated her

  420. harshly God asked her to do a really

  421. hard thing and she did it God told Hagar

  422. to go back but he did not leave her

  423. without the comfort of

  424. Hope the Angel of the Lord promised her

  425. that the child she had will grow up and

  426. be the father of many and that Hagar's

  427. pain and sacrifice would not be in

  428. vain and in response Hagar this escaped

  429. slave a foreigner a

  430. woman gives God his first recorded name

  431. in the Bible Elroy the God who

  432. sees years later Hagar has another

  433. encounter with God in the wilderness

  434. when she and son is sent away from

  435. Abraham and

  436. Sarah dying of thirst in the desert

  437. Hagar is led to a spring of water and

  438. told once again that God has not

  439. forgotten

  440. her you see God remains faithful even to

  441. those who are kicked out harshly treated

  442. or forgotten why because he never

  443. forgets if you feel alone in a

  444. Wilderness today God sees you God knows

  445. you God offers you hope in the Life

  446. Death and resurrection of

  447. Jesus just

  448. listen God speaks in the wilderness be

  449. still know that he is God Psalm 4610

  450. says be still and know that I am

  451. God the Hebrew word for be still is Rafa

  452. and the meaning of this word literally

  453. means to let go to relax

  454. to cease

  455. striving to sink down be weak let

  456. go Release

  457. Control

  458. surrender think about that it's not

  459. forcing calm but it's freeing

  460. control it's not ignoring the storms but

  461. it's releasing the

  462. grip Lou Giglio said God's plan for your

  463. life far exceeds the circumstances of

  464. your day you see true peace is not about

  465. perfect circumstances or controlled

  466. outcomes or managed

  467. anxiety true peace is about letting God

  468. handle what overwhelms you trusting his

  469. strength more than your

  470. control and finding rest in releasing

  471. control

  472. you see God's peace flows strongest

  473. through a surrendered

  474. heart choose his peace over your control

  475. trust his plan over your

  476. Panic it's important to remember that

  477. God wants us to rely on him to come to

  478. him and to be guided by him but he does

  479. warn us to keep knowing him we're

  480. reminded in Hosea 13: 5 and 6 how God

  481. has been so good to us us and will

  482. always help us in the

  483. wilderness but he also reminds us of the

  484. importance of not drifting away after

  485. the trouble

  486. stops there are troubles in life God

  487. wants us to come and seek him in the

  488. desert because he has that lifegiving

  489. source to sustain you he will lead you

  490. step by step mouthful by mouthful to

  491. keep you going through the trouble and

  492. the torment the challenges and the

  493. stress because he wants you to be strong

  494. like a acacia tree roots deeply planted

  495. in him so that when the drought comes

  496. and it will when the outcomes cannot be

  497. controlled when the worry overwhelms you

  498. you can stand strong in him and how do

  499. we do it be still be still and know give

  500. up that

  501. control as the saying goes let go and

  502. let God

  503. there will be troubles in life it's

  504. normal every single one of us has faced

  505. troubles challenges deserts in our life

  506. my trouble is different to your trouble

  507. your trouble is different to their

  508. trouble and their trouble is different

  509. to someone else's trouble it cannot be

  510. compared it's not a

  511. competition it's about saying God I need

  512. you to guide me

  513. through as many of you know I live with

  514. metastatic breast cancer that's my my

  515. trouble that's my desert but I choose to

  516. walk close with him I allow the dust of

  517. his sandals to fall on my

  518. feet when it's hard I depend on

  519. him for my next mouthful each day when

  520. it's bearable I stay close to him

  521. because I know that I need him this is

  522. what God is talking about when he says

  523. have peace in

  524. me in this world you will have trouble

  525. but take heart I have overcome the

  526. world we all go through it every single

  527. one of us we're told in John 10:10 that

    John 10:10

  528. the enemy comes to steal kill and

  529. destroy it's rather depressing to hear

  530. the enemy will steal anything of

  531. importance to you but we are promised

  532. that while the enemy comes to steal kill

  533. and destroy God has come so that you may

  534. have life and have life

  535. abundantly not your every want but your

  536. every need

  537. I want to be cancer free but I need to

  538. get through each day and God gives me

  539. what I need it's not to say he can't

  540. give me what I want as well that is the

  541. hope that keeps us striving in him but

  542. he gives us what we need he doesn't take

  543. the trouble away you see no matter what

  544. has caused the desert that you're in no

  545. matter where your troubles come from if

  546. you come to God he will help guide you

  547. in your

  548. trouble in Isaiah 57 it says I have seen

  549. what they do but I will heal them anyway

  550. I will lead them I will comfort those

  551. who mourn bringing words of praise to

  552. their lips may they have abundant peace

  553. both near and far said the Lord who

  554. heals

  555. them it doesn't matter what your trouble

  556. is how big or how small whose fault or

  557. who's

  558. innocent if you come to the Good

  559. Shepherd he will lead lead you through

  560. when you live with trouble he will guide

  561. you I think of the 12 apostles between

  562. Adelaide and Melbourne along the coast

  563. they these towering stacks of limestone

  564. Rock the patient waves over time has

  565. transformed that solid

  566. Cliff do you see beauty isn't formed by

  567. force God often transforms us not

  568. through the Sudden Impact but through

  569. con constant contact with him Isaiah

    Isaiah 43:19

  570. 43:19 tells us behold I am doing a new

  571. thing now it Springs forth do you not

  572. perceive it I will make a way in the

  573. wilderness and rivers in the

  574. desert see sometimes it is hard to see

  575. sometimes it looks like a desert with

  576. not a blade of grass in

  577. sight God is renewing you slowly over

  578. time God is repairing you slowly over a

  579. time God is chipping away at us when we

  580. don't realize it when we're caught in

  581. our troubles and our trials he slowly

  582. transforms

  583. us as the waves possess the stone yields

  584. when water flows shapes emerge when

  585. contact continues change

  586. happens if mere water can shape that

  587. hard rock Limestone on our Coast how

  588. much more can God's word shape our

  589. hearts

  590. how do we see transformation how do we

  591. see relief through patient surrender and

  592. constant connection with

  593. him we looked at this verse I have told

  594. you these things that in me you may have

  595. peace in this world you will have

  596. trouble but take heart I have overcome

  597. the

  598. world for me this is Psalms

  600. grass pictures that everyone

  601. imagines but Psalm 23 in the context of

  617. darkest Valley I will not be afraid for

  618. you are close Beside Me Your Rod and

  619. your staff protect and comfort me you

  620. prepare A Feast for me in the presence

  621. of my

  626. days of my life and I will live in the
