  1. let's

  2. pray Lord God we thank you for your

  3. church we thank you for the opportunity

  4. to gather together time to exalt you and

  5. lift you up and worship you and remember

  6. you in all the things that we do and we

  7. pray right now as we come around your

  8. word that you would speak to

  9. us that you would guide us that you

  10. would lead

  11. us in Jesus name amen

  12. now as you most of you would be aware if

  13. you weren't here last week we announced

  14. that for the month of March we're going

  15. to be walking through Psalm

  16. 23 and I thought just before we dig into

  17. Psalm 23 bit by bit we thought it'd be

  18. good to just give you a little bit of an

  19. overview of the Psalms in general now

  20. the Psalms are described described as a

  21. book of poems or a book of songs and um

  22. some Scholars would actually say that

  23. the Psalms were the hym book of the Jews

  24. because the Jews would actually sing

  25. these Psalms together when they gathered

  26. together to worship God a little bit

  27. like what we would describe as liturgy

  28. in modern Church they would come

  29. together and they would sing them

  30. together which reminded me of the fact

  31. that that's what we do when we come

  32. together U most of the songs we sing

  33. many of them this morning were taken

  34. straight from

  35. and that we sing together to remind us

  36. to and encourage us to stay faithful to

  37. Jesus and his commands or his words and

  38. the Jews did the same when they came

  39. together with the Psalms they'd sing the

  40. Psalms to remind them to stay faithful

  41. to the Torah is what they knew as the

  42. word of God and uh and in the Psalms

  43. they they also talk about their waiting

  44. for the Mah that they're expecting to

  45. come so if there's some really

  46. interesting stuff around the Psalms in

  47. that it's it's divided into five parts

  48. and those five parts reflect the Torah

  49. the five books of that Moses wrote that

  50. the Jews built their faith upon and um

  51. and so when they were reading the Psalms

  52. or singing the Psalms might try singing

  53. it a little bit later who knows they uh

  54. they were singing and ing that they were

  55. going to stay faithful to the Torah but

  56. also within those psalms there's this

  57. common theme of they were looking

  58. forward to the Messiah coming to fulfill

  59. scripture does that sound good now in

  60. the Psalms there are two types of Psalms

  61. there are the Psalms of lament and the

  62. psalms of praise now we know what the

  63. Psalms of lament mean they those psalms

  64. where the psalmist goes where are you

  65. God why have you forsaken me why why

  66. have you left me I sit all night in my

  67. bed and I cried you know my bed is full

  68. of tears you read those song or I'd be

  69. better off dead and here sort of stuff

  70. the lament stuff and then there's the

  71. songs of praise which or the psalms of

  72. praise which talk about how good and

  73. faithful God has been and acknowledging

  74. God is the Creator and the one who has

  75. given us all and who is

  76. amazing and I I really love that idea of

  77. Psalms of lament and Psalms of pra

  78. because it reminds me that when I come

  79. to God I can I can come just as I

  80. am whether I'm depressed and downtrodden

  81. and had enough of life or whether I'm on

  82. top of the world and I'm just thinking

  83. God you're amazing you're God says it's

  84. okay come as you are come openly and

  85. honestly sometimes we're rejoicing and

  86. sometimes we're

  87. lamenting now the most famous power of

  88. the Psalms is David King David he

  89. literally wrote over half of the Psalms

  90. 79 out of the 150 Psalms that we had

  91. David wrote 79 of them and it's believed

  92. that he wrote Psalm 23 later in life as

  93. he reflected on on his life and he

  94. praised God for and acknowledge God's

  95. hand upon his life from beginning to end

  96. I I sort of have a thought that David

  97. was probably writing Psalm 23 his old

  98. life it was a it was something he was as

  99. a boy as he was looking after his father

  100. sheep in the back blocks of Israel he

  101. was getting this revelation of who God

  102. is is and um I think it's a really great

  103. example for us of how God uses our life

  104. experiences to reveal himself to

  105. us David was serving his father looking

  106. after the Sheep and as he did God

  107. revealed himself to him as this amazing

  108. Shepherd and the incredible thing

  109. is over the thousands of years years

  110. since this Psalm was

  111. written David's revelation of God has

  112. been an encouragement to Christians for

  113. years and years and years and it just

  114. made me think and I want to begin today

  115. by just asking you a question as we

  116. consider the psss

  117. are we looking for and listening for God

  118. in what we are

  119. experiencing right now in our lives are

  120. we looking for and listening for God in

  121. what we are experiencing right now in

  122. our lives reminded me a of a time in my

  123. life where I just left our former church

  124. with a plan to plant a church but it was

  125. a very difficult time in my life and and

  126. I

  127. remember and I've probably told this

  128. story before but I remember sitting up

  129. on the go Coast getting up early in the

  130. morning because they don't have daylight

  131. savings about 4 in the morning everyone

  132. else was asleep and I just felt to just

  133. pray and in that time I was

  134. lamenting I was in that space where it

  135. wasn't a song of Praise coming from my

  136. mouth it was a song of complain and

  137. complaining and lament I was sitting

  138. there going God I've left everything I'd

  139. been in that church all my life pretty

  140. well and I'd gotten to a position where

  141. I had a Ministry in the church and I had

  142. a role and a responsibility and I

  143. thought God I'm leaving everything I

  144. don't know what I'm doing here I'm

  145. leaving everything that I have my

  146. Ministry my this my that my friends my

  147. all that and in that moment as I was

  148. crying out to God

  149. complaining that little still voice came

  150. to my

  151. ear and said what about

  152. me aren't I enough for

  153. you and in that moment I was reminded of

  154. the

  155. Revelation that it's not about my

  156. Ministry and my this and my that but

  157. it's about my relationship with God and

  158. it's that Foundation that we've built

  159. this church on a foundation that

  160. relationships are what matter most

  161. firstly our relationship with God then

  162. our relationship with each other and our

  163. relationship with our

  164. community and in that experience in that

  165. space god revealed himself to me

  166. reminded me of what really mattered so

  167. that's what I ask you this question

  168. right now are we looking for and

  169. listening for God in what we are

  170. experiencing right now in our

  171. lives now I'm going to ask you

  172. to do something for me today and we've

  173. got some handouts I believe is that

  174. right are they up the

  175. back um if I could grab

  176. someone to I I thought wiita was going

  177. to ask the ushers to do it but I

  178. probably should

  179. um there's big ones and there's little

  180. ones so those of you who like me don't

  181. like to wear your glasses there's bigger

  182. ones for you but there's uh but those

  183. younger ones who have 2020 Vision you're

  184. welcome to take a smaller one but um

  185. these are to give you for this month of

  186. March put them on your fridge put them

  187. in on the back of your toilet door put

  188. them in your Bible wherever you want to

  189. put them they Psalm 23 written out for

  190. you and today I thought it would be

  191. great in the tradition of the the Jewish

  192. tradition of reading the Psalms together

  193. we're not going to sing them we're going

  194. to read them so um I'll get you to once

  195. you've got your your uh little hand out

  196. I'll get you to be

  197. upstanding someone might want to help

  198. Brenton so I think he needs a drink

  199. big one or little

  200. one so once you've got yours why you be

  201. upstanding that's it stand

  202. up you got a little one Brian oh you got

  203. your glasses on

  204. just showing off showing off all right

  205. I'll have it on the screen for you as

  206. well if you need

  207. it everyone got one all right in big

  208. voices and with enthusiasm today who's

  209. got

  210. enthusiasm anyone feeling enthusiastic

  211. about God's

  212. word yes

  213. enthusiasm all right on the count of

  214. three one two three the Lord is my

  215. amen well done that was the best Bible

  216. reading I think we've ever done in

  217. church

  218. fantastic thank you for standing up the

  219. back there too Ryan that was wonderful

  220. joining in it's

  221. great what an amazing passage of

  222. scripture an amazing piece of literature

  223. and so over the next four weeks we're

  224. going to walk through this Psalm bit by

  225. bit there's actually four sections to

  226. the psalm and today I'm going to do

  227. verses one to three last week Emily

  228. without knowing gave us an overview of

  229. the Psalms and the relationship between

  230. the shepherd and the sheep and we

  231. discovered how the boundaries of our

  232. relationship with God God should work

  233. verse one says very clearly the Lord is

  234. my

  235. shepherd I shall not

  236. want basically telling us that God is

  237. the Lord and as the Lord he is our

  238. Shepherd

  239. and that means he is the shepherd and we

  240. are the Sheep now don't get offended it

  241. is

  242. scripture but you are not sheep because

  243. you are dumb right is that

  244. okay it's simply explaining to us that

  245. God is the provider of all we need and

  246. we are to receive all we need from him

  247. in other words God gives and we

  248. receive God is the source of all and we

  249. need to depend and rely upon him for

  250. everything now this part where it says I

  251. shall not

  252. want this idea of what does it mean how

  253. do we look probably two ways we can look

  254. at it we can look at it firstly by

  255. saying that God gives me all I

  256. want and this can become a way of faith

  257. in our world today it's a consumerism

  258. type of faith that faith that has that

  259. attitude that says that focuses on

  260. us and

  261. says God is some sort of Father

  262. Christmas some sort of benevolent

  263. benefactor that gives us everything we

  264. desire now the problem I have with this

  265. attitude is that what happens when we

  266. don't get what we

  267. desire when God doesn't heal us God

  268. doesn't pay the bill God doesn't give us

  269. that job God doesn't give us that wife

  270. or husband that we

  271. wanted and all of a sudden and I've

  272. talked with people over the years and

  273. I've seen them respond to this that

  274. God's not giving me and they

  275. that does God God doesn't even care for

  276. me or they take it even further and they

  277. start to question does God even really

  278. exists and I I believe this image of God

  279. is a distorted image that he would be

  280. the god that gives us all we want and it

  281. diminish diminishes God to be our

  282. servant rather than the God who created

  283. us with the purpose of relationship

  284. the second way we can look at

  285. this is is taking an attitude that says

  286. with God as my

  287. she I have all that I want or in other

  288. words I

  289. lack with God as my

  290. shepherd I have all that I want and I

  291. lack nothing you know this was my one of

  292. my mom's favorite passages of scripture

  293. she lived by and we've written on the

  294. bottom of her gravestone

  295. the Lord is my shepherd I lack

  296. nothing and it's it's that attitude of

  297. with God I have everything I need why

  298. it's so important to take that attitude

  299. is because God is the objective and I am

  300. declaring my trust in whatever he has

  301. planned for my life and David is exactly

  302. saying this as he reflects over his own

  303. life he's acknowledging that God has

  304. been with me all the way and I see his

  305. goodness and his Mercy wherever I look

  306. and this is a relationship where God

  307. leads and we

  308. follow we when we accept that Jesus is

  309. my Creator and my Lord what I'm saying

  310. is I place my life in his hands and

  311. believe in him is everything I need to

  312. be all I was created to be I love a

  313. quote from from r f that up he says

  314. because the Lord is my shepherd I shall

  315. not be in want and unless the Lord is my

  316. shepherd I shall be in

  317. want if I am not in want it is because

  318. the Lord is my

  319. sheer and if I

  320. am then the Lord is not

  321. my challenging

  322. so verse one establishes the boundaries

  323. of our relationship with God he is the

  324. shepherd we are the Sheep now it goes on

  325. then in verses two and three to show us

  326. what God provides for us in that

  327. relationship the first part says he

  328. makes me lie down in Green Pastures that

  329. sounds good doesn't it what what do you

  330. focus on in that part what's the what's

  331. the thing that makes sense to you I

  332. don't know about you but for me the

  333. first thing that I'm drawn to in my

  334. carnal sort of nature is Green

  335. Pastures oh provision everything I need

  336. type of thing but the key word or key

  337. words in this passage are not Green

  338. Pastures the key words are lied

  339. down see we want to focus on the

  340. abundance that Green Pastures gives us

  341. that picture of but the key message of

  342. this verse is that the Sheep had found

  343. safe place where with the shepherd where

  344. they can Li lie down and

  345. rest you know it's farmers will tell you

  346. sheep will only lie down when they know

  347. they are safe otherwise they're always

  348. on guard always watching and ready to

  349. run so this passage is telling us when

  350. we make God Our Shepherd we are

  351. safe the Green Pastures that David is

  352. talking about is the is not physical

  353. abundance but rather the safety that we

  354. find knowing god both spiritually and

  355. internally Jesus said it like this this

  356. is eternal life that you know God and

  357. his son who

  358. sent so a relationship with the shepherd

  359. allows us to stop

  360. striving stop consuming when the Sheep

  361. lies down in G pastures that isn't

  362. eating the pastures it's resting in the

  363. pastures and that happens when we God

  364. the Reigns it's that same message that

  365. Jesus spoke when he talked about take my

  366. yoke Rest in Me So this verse reminds me

  367. that truth that my value and worth is

  368. not determined by what I have or what I

  369. achieve or how trouble-free my life is

  370. but it is determined by who I am

  371. connected with and with God as my

  372. shepher I am

  373. the next part says he leads me beside

  374. Still Waters again we quickly be

  375. attracted to the idea of still waters

  376. isn't that right but the key ver words

  377. of this verse are the words he

  378. leads he leads me be beside Still Waters

  379. basically telling us that you will not

  380. experience peace the Peace of still

  381. waters you refuse to be led by

  382. him choosing God as your Shepherd means

  383. surrendering to his

  384. leading there a

  385. challenge now that doesn't mean you just

  386. sit down and you get up in the morning

  387. you say god what have you got for me

  388. today should I eat wheat pigs or corn

  389. flakes should I drive the car or catch

  390. the train it's not that type of

  391. leading it's that

  392. that idea of his we have to be like

  393. asking him what's the next thing we

  394. should do

  395. but waiting or being led by God is all

  396. about making our relationship with God

  397. the primary purpose of our

  398. life it's that it's that understand that

  399. God is always working for us Jesus said

  400. that the father is always at work he's

  401. always working on our behalf and we need

  402. to understand that and that God is

  403. working in my life and through my life

  404. and so what I need to do is make loving

  405. God with all my heart soul and strength

  406. my

  407. purpose and when we do that the natural

  408. fruit of our life is doing life the way

  409. God has called us to there's a really

  410. powerful passage in Galatians where it

  411. talks about walking in the spirit that

  412. God has called us to walk in the spirit

  413. Not In the Flesh and that idea is that

  414. that idea of the sheep and the shepherd

  415. is there that we follow the Holy Spirit

  416. we are led by the Holy Spirit we're

  417. watchful for the Holy Spirit and in

  418. Galatians 5 it says very clearly that

  419. the fruit of someone who walks in the

  420. spirit who walks with God and and is

  421. acknowledging God in all they do and is

  422. is thinking that and trusting that God

  423. is leading is that they will produce the

  424. fruit of love joy peace in

  425. there the peace we're looking for the

  426. Still

  427. Waters all these different things

  428. perseverance and so on and so this is

  429. what this passage is saying is when we

  430. acknowledge that we are being led by God

  431. that God is the one we're following that

  432. we we're understanding that he is our

  433. God he is our Shepherd and we submit to

  434. him if you refuse to submit your life to

  435. him you will never find

  436. peace the next part says he restores my

  437. soul now in this this one the key word

  438. is

  439. restores you happy about

  440. that following the shepherd brings

  441. Restoration in the original language in

  442. the Hebrew this word restores can also

  443. be translated as

  444. refresh or another way which is really

  445. interesting is returns as in it brings

  446. it back to where it came

  447. from that picture is in modern terms is

  448. rebooting your computer when it's messed

  449. up anyone do that anyone remember you

  450. ring up the IT people and they say have

  451. you tried turning it on and off again is

  452. that right that's on and off again off

  453. and on again off and then on again that

  454. that idea that it's a reboot it's a

  455. restart and the Bible teaches us that we

  456. are created in God's image therefore we

  457. will never discover our true selves

  458. until we

  459. reconnect with our Shepherd or our

  460. creator so restoring or restoration of

  461. our soul refreshing of our soul

  462. returning our soul is all about

  463. salvation we can try to F our lives with

  464. all kinds of things to try and make us

  465. feel better fill our lives with

  466. relationships with possessions with

  467. positions all those sorts of things to

  468. try to refresh and restore us but it's

  469. only a relationship with our creator

  470. it's only a relationship with the

  471. shepherd it's only a relationship with

  472. God that will restore our soul refresh

  473. our lives and return us back to who

  474. created us to be this is what this is

  475. saying about restoring my soul the great

  476. thing about this is that Jesus has done

  477. everything required for our souls to be

  478. restored there's a beautiful Parable

  479. that he tells to explain this where he

  480. says he's the Good Shepherd and that he

  481. is the shepherd who leaves the 99 to

  482. find the one lost sheep

  483. that's God restoring our he left Heaven

  484. came to Earth died on a cross and rose

  485. again the purpose of bringing those lost

  486. sheep back to him how good is

  487. that all we need to do is acknowledge

  488. our

  489. mistake declare our need for

  490. him and his promise is to refresh

  491. restore and return us back to who he

  492. created us

  493. the final thing that we'll look at today

  494. is he leads me in Paths of righteousness

  495. for his name's

  496. sake again this

  497. affirms the need for us as sheep to have

  498. a

  499. mindset that my life exists to follow

  500. the

  501. shepherd this is the key to this whole

  502. first

  503. these whole first three we love to focus

  504. on Green Pastures Still Waters

  505. restoration but the key to these first

  506. and verses and it establishes very

  507. clearly that if we want these things it

  508. requires us to allow God to

  509. live Emily said last week that it's no

  510. accident that Jesus used the words

  511. follow me

  512. described himself as I am the Good

  513. Shepherd and he encourages encourages us

  514. to follow

  515. him John 8:12 he says these words he

    John 8:12

  516. says whoever follows me will not walk in

  517. darkness but will have the light of life

  518. and that's what this passage is talking

  519. about in Psalms the verse is literally

  520. telling us that those who put their

  521. trust in the shepherd

  522. will always be on the right

  523. path those who put their trust in the

  524. shepherd will always be on the right

  525. path this is God's promise to us trust

  526. me and I will lead you where you

  527. need put your faith in me and I will

  528. lead you

  529. to rest in

  530. me put the full weight of your life upon

  531. me because I can hold you and I will

  532. take you where you need to go another

  533. really powerful Psalm that David wrote

  534. was Psalm

  535. 37 and uh in that Psalm he says these

  536. words the Lord directs the steps of The

  537. Godly he Delights in every detail of

  538. their lives that's in the New Living

  539. Translation in the Amplified it says it

  540. this way the steps of a good and

  541. righteous

  542. are directed and established by the Lord

  543. and He Delights in his way and blesses

  544. his path the steps of a good and

  545. righteous man are ordered by the Lord or

  546. are directed and established by the Lord

  547. now we know we understand that as

  548. Christians nothing we can do makes us

  549. righteous the Bible tells us our

  550. righteousness is as dirty rags that's

  551. why Jesus had to come but Jesus promises

  552. us that if we put our faith in him if we

  553. choose to trust him acknowledge Him as

  554. our

  555. Shepherd he then gives us his

  556. righteousness and the Bible teaches us

  557. that he leads us into all

  558. righteousness that means that and if we

  559. look at this verse that we've just read

  560. that means that we could literally

  561. translate as God is delighted in the

  562. person who puts their trust in is

  563. righteousness and he directs their

  564. steps notice what I in this in this

  565. paraphrase of it is God is delighted in

  566. the person who

  567. puts it's in the present

  568. tense it's not Delights in the person

  569. who has put his faith maybe years ago

  570. you put your faith in Jesus and you

  571. think well I did it then and that's

  572. great so everything should be okay no

  573. every day you put your faith in his

  574. righteousness every step you take you're

  575. putting your faith in his righteousness

  576. it's active it's daily is Moment by

  577. moment I am trusting God this is what

  578. this passage David is trying to explain

  579. to

  580. us in this he leads me in Paths of

  581. righteousness or God directs the steps

  582. of the

  583. is that he is telling us that we need to

  584. put our faith in him Moment by moment

  585. step

  586. by it's not just something we

  587. decided 25 years ago or 10 years ago and

  588. it's all okay it's a

  589. daily Moment by moment thing but it even

  590. goes even deeper than that because

  591. repeatedly the Bible encourages us

  592. to live a life that trusts

  593. God God's way above our own way so in

  594. other words our job is to trust and it's

  595. God's job to

  596. lead and in Psalm 23 what we've just

  597. read is a beautiful picture of God as

  598. the shepher and we as the

  599. Sheep the benefits are endless but the

  600. challenge for us is to choose to

  601. as next week we're going to go into the

  602. next passage about the Valley of the

  603. shadow of

  604. death which reminds us is if we learn to

  605. trust God it doesn't matter where he

  606. leads us we

  607. will doesn't matters us us

  608. when when we decision to allow God to be

  609. our his prom

  610. is Ste Waters but his ultimate promise

  611. is that he will guide us

  612. every step

  613. of We Are Not Alone the God who loves us

  614. is with

  615. us and

  616. heighted to walk with us

  617. no I want to close with this last

  618. thought because I I found it really

  619. interesting that there's a really

  620. beautiful connection between David's

  621. teaching around this idea of trusting

  622. God as the shepher and we as the Sheep

  623. IDE living a life of

  624. trust continually Watching God through

  625. his

  626. dire and his son's teaching in the

  627. Proverbs his son Solomon King Solomon

  628. who followed on from David

  629. after after David died and there's a

  630. really interesting connection between

  631. the two David talking about trusting the

  632. Lord with everything we have and son

  633. Solomon in the Proverbs he wrote

  634. Proverbs teaches us the same thing and

  635. the picture I get maybe it's just where

  636. I'm at the moment but I have that

  637. picture of David drumming this into his

  638. son all his

  639. life

  640. he's Solomon don't forget the Lord's

  641. your Shepherd stop trying to do it your

  642. own way follow the

  643. shepherd you

  644. imagine it's like

  645. having for me that that benefit and

  646. that privilege of having a Godly mother

  647. who continually encourage me to trust

  648. God or she would say trust God Benny you

  649. can do it trust him he's got everything

  650. everything you

  651. need trust him trust him and I can

  652. imagine David doing the son same with

  653. his son Solomon trust trust you're going

  654. to be the next king need to learn to

  655. allow the shepherd to lead let him lead

  656. trust him trust him he orders the steps

  657. of the good and righteous ones the ones

  658. that are in right standing with him the

  659. ones that are trusting him and then we

  660. go

  661. to

  662. and maybe Solomon listen sometimes maybe

  663. he didn't but at the end of the day

  664. scripture teaches us that at some point

  665. it's sunk in

  666. because in

  667. Proverbs 35 and

  668. 6 Solomon wrote these

  669. words trust in the Lord with all your

  670. heart and do not lean on your own

  671. understanding in all your ways

  672. acknowledge Him and He will make your

  673. paths

  674. straight let's pray

  675. as we bow our heads and we reflect on

  676. these first three verses of

  677. Psalms take a moment just

  678. to think about your life right now

  679. what is God saying to

  680. you maybe he's

  681. saying give me back the steering

  682. wheel make me your Shepherd

  683. again you've got distracted youve you've

  684. allowed yourself to be led your own ways

  685. and God's calling you back and saying

  686. trust me trust me

  687. calling you to

  688. reboot to

  689. refresh maybe he's just wanting you to

  690. know whatever you're going through right

  691. now he wants you to

  692. know it's okay you're safe with me I've

  693. got you I'm holding you right

  694. now doesn't matter what happens I'm with

  695. you and you are safe maybe that's

  696. today what I want you to do is just

  697. reach out to

  698. him talk to him acknowledge

  699. Him take a moment to acknowledge him as

  700. your

  701. Shepherd say God I choose you to be my

  702. shepherd maybe you need to say help me

  703. be a sheep because I'm a stubborn

  704. pigheaded

  705. sheep who loves to do their own thing so

  706. help me God to

  707. the type of sheep I need to be one that

  708. trusts

  709. you you take a moment just

  710. to ask God for his help

  711. Lord God we thank you for your

  712. word we thank you that it is life to

  713. us that it reminds us

  714. of what we're called to

  715. do that the greatest thing we can do in

  716. this life is trust

  717. you trust you with their life the

  718. greatest thing we can do is follow you

  719. and your promise to us as you would lead

  720. us and guide us and will be with us in

  721. all

  722. things pray for every person here you

  723. know where they're at right now I pray

  724. that over these next few weeks and even

  725. today that you would give them a fresh

  726. revelation of you as their Shepherd the

  727. Good

  728. Shepherd who

  729. leads into Green

  730. Pastures he restores our

  731. he leads us in Paths of

  732. righteousness he refreshes

  733. us we lean into you and we rest in you

  734. and we put our faith and trust in

  735. you in Jesus

  736. name amen
