  1. Well, it is lovely and cool in here.

  2. >> How are we all this morning?

  3. >> Good. It's lovely and cool in here. I

  4. was sitting there with goosebumps, which

  5. is nice cuz I'll step outside and be

  6. like the opposite. But um it is lovely

  7. to see you all um on this Sunday and and

  8. lovely to see so many of Hamish's family

  9. and friends um who I think there are a

  10. lot of people in the ministry so bit of

  11. pressure for me but that's okay.

  12. Um I want to ask you think back to what

  13. you remember as being your best year or

  14. maybe it was a a good time. Maybe it was

  15. when you were young in your 20s or a

  16. teenager. Maybe it was more recent than

  17. that. Think back to that time, that

  18. year, that holiday. What made it good?

  19. What made it great? Even what would you

  20. consider your best year or time or

  21. season? Doing what you love. Can you

  22. think of that and hold that thought?

  23. We just returned from a trip overseas.

  24. It was really needed. We left just days

  25. after the last day of school uh and went

  26. to India. We spent 10 days touring, two

  27. and a half weeks at our house with

  28. family there. We spent Christmas and New

  29. Year and then a few days in Koala Lumpa

  30. on the way home. It was busy but it was

  31. not chaotic. We had time to explore, to

  32. see, to relax in the evenings, to enjoy

  33. meals, to take in the sights, time to

  34. read, time to play cards, watch game,

  35. watch movies, play games. We did a lot.

  36. Um, we did a lot of steps, we did a lot

  37. of stairs.

  38. We ate a lot of Indian food. Uh we drank

  39. a lot of chai. We battled plenty of

  40. crowds. We caught trains, buses,

  41. flights, autos, cycle rick shores, cars,

  42. and the monor rail. So, um Ben mentioned

  43. a couple last week, I think he said, why

  44. don't you do a slideshow? So, I'm just

  45. going to give you a real quick

  46. slideshow. Um so, if we can hit the

  47. light so you can see. Um,

  48. we visited the Golden Temple in Amritza.

  49. It's a seek temple that feeds over a

  50. 100,000 meals a day to anyone who needs

  51. one. We witnessed the changing of the

  52. guard ceremony at the IndiaPakistan

  53. border.

  54. We traveled 7,000 ft up on a very windy

  55. road to see a mountain town near the

  56. Himalayas, Missouri, where my

  57. grandmother attended boarding school as

  58. a child in the 30s and 40s. We walked

  59. the steep narrow cobblestone roads of

  60. the area. We viewed in the distance the

  61. snowcapped Himalayas. We saw the Tibetan

  62. Buddhist prayer flags hung high on the

  63. hill. We saw the hustle and the bustle

  64. of Delhi.

  65. The structures that have withtood

  66. hundreds of years in a very populated

  67. and smoggy city. We were aed by the

  68. magnificence of the Taj Mahal and the

  69. precious stone inlays in the symmetrical

  70. building built close to 500 years ago.

  71. We witnessed the fortresses built of red

  72. sandstone which still stand today. We

  73. put our hands onto the handcarved beauty

  74. in the pillars. We saw churches,

  75. mosques, temples, and other religious

  76. sites. We saw the final resting place of

  77. the famous Mother Teresa. As simple as

  78. she lived her life, but as impactful as

  79. she left her legacy. We sat for hours in

  80. trains watching the countryside go by.

  81. We in cues. We sat in parks.

  82. We spent time with family. We played,

  83. you know, more times than we can count.

  84. Snakes and ladders. We milked the cows.

  85. We watched the goats, the sheep, the

  86. chickens, the animals run on the

  87. streets. We drove to far villages. We

  88. ate food on the ground on paper plates

  89. for Christmas Day. We saw the joy in the

  90. faces of our nieces and nephews as they

  91. saw and put their feet in the ocean for

  92. the first time in their lives. and saw

  93. animals in a zoo they could have only

  94. imagined or seen in books.

  95. We saw the twin towers in Malaysia. We

  96. climbed the almost 300 steps of a

  97. brightly pl paint painted temple. We saw

  98. creatures in the aquarium and bird park

  99. which were fascinating.

  100. And more than once um my husband's words

  101. to me was this is such a nice family

  102. time and that it was.

  103. So think of that time I asked you to

  104. think of at the beginning. Was it a

  105. year? Was it a holiday? Was it a season?

  106. Was it a short time?

  107. What was it that you remember being a

  108. good time? And I think for the majority

  109. of us, if not all of us, all the times

  110. that you can think of right now were

  111. times that you are not in a time of

  112. rush, a holiday, a time in your younger

  113. years where there was no stress.

  114. Spending time together on leave when

  115. you've got a newborn. It's busy, but

  116. it's not rushed. You can take it all in.

  117. Traveling with someone you love and

  118. sightseeing.

  119. Relaxing at home doing something that

  120. you enjoy. Strolling along the beach.

  121. Times where you were enjoying something

  122. in your life.

  123. Work, family, your loved ones, and you

  124. spent it without rush when you slowed

  125. down. For us, this holiday was nice to

  126. be spending time together as a family

  127. without the rush or routine of daily

  128. life, but time to take in the extra

  129. moments.

  130. It happens to all of us. Life gets busy.

  131. Life gets chaotic, rushed. There's so

  132. much to fit in. For me, I had a pretty

  133. busy year last year. Life is generally

  134. busy when you have a husband who works

  135. close to full-time shift work. Three

  136. children in school, one in primary, one

  137. in high school starting a new school

  138. last year, one in senior school year 11,

  139. which these days is, if not busier than

  140. year 12, who is also learning how to

  141. drive. Each participates in activities

  142. outside of school, so they need to train

  143. and play games or practice practice an

  144. instrument or attend a performance. I've

  145. always worked since my first part-time

  146. job at age 14. When the girls were

  147. young, I worked one then two days a

  148. week. A few years ago, I increased to

  149. three days a week. And just before

  150. Christmas, the year before last, my boss

  151. told me she was retiring. And by January

  152. that year, I was working four days a

  153. week. So last year was a busy year for

  154. me. As well as this, like a lot of

  155. people, I manage a chronic health issue.

  156. It adds in the extra appointment once or

  157. twice a month, specialist, GP, nurse,

  158. physio extras, and all the waiting time

  159. that goes along with that with the

  160. public hospital system.

  161. As well as this, it is nice to see

  162. friends and family sometimes. Um, and

  163. our family, our faith is our priority.

  164. So, we we are involved in the church. We

  165. go to church most weeks. I'm involved in

  166. the preaching roster, volunteering in

  167. the church, plus all the other things

  168. like making a house, keeping the garden

  169. alive, which unfortunately is just

  170. hanging in there. Um, it's not thriving,

  171. but it is alive. Um, walking the dog,

  172. looking after the managerie we call our

  173. own, the dog, the cat, the frog, the

  174. guinea pig, a dozen chickens. Thanks,

  175. Wanita, for keeping them alive when we

  176. were away.

  177. [laughter]

  178. But I love it. I love being busy.

  179. By the end of the year though, last year

  180. I was exhausted. I was gradually

  181. becoming more and more rushed. I had not

  182. that m much extra to give. My meals had

  183. got a bit lazy. And while the girls

  184. didn't complain, I know they're a bit

  185. slap dash, maybe not as nutritional as

  186. they should have been. Probably a bit

  187. much takeaway slipped in there. And as

  188. often happens towards the end of the

  189. year, I began to reflect on how I can

  190. make some simple changes so that this

  191. year I would feel less rushed. I've

  192. always hated New Year's New Year's

  193. resolutions. So, I didn't do that. But

  194. from November, I really sought to sought

  195. God to help guide me to make some

  196. conscious and thoughtful decisions, a

  197. bit of a refocus

  198. to look at my priorities. And so I start

  199. implementing some things in December.

  200. Still looking at ways to simplify areas

  201. of my life to do more of the things I

  202. like like cooking or gardening or

  203. reading or knitting. Don't judge me. But

  204. we're looking at prayer in October,

  205. November at church. So I really started

  206. to focus on that. I felt that I needed

  207. to prioritize God even more in my life.

  208. Read the Bible more. I've read it

  209. through before and I do read it, but my

  210. regular reading had slowed. So, I

  211. ordered a book to help guide me through

  212. reading the Bible in a year. I started

  213. that while we were away, and God has

  214. continued to guide me to make simple

  215. changes just to reduce that rush.

  216. Putting down the phone, reducing social

  217. media use, not worrying about world

  218. issues that are beyond my control,

  219. but trusting that God is in control.

  220. While we were away, I searched up

  221. recipes that were good to make, that

  222. were easy, quick, but really tasty. And

  223. I've already started to to make them

  224. when we've got home.

  225. I'm trying to be organized, trying to be

  226. well planned. And during our first

  227. service this year, Ben a couple of weeks

  228. ago shared and he mentioned that verse

  229. in Matthew 11:28-30,

    Matthew 11:28–30

  230. come to me. And it really spoke to me,

  231. he will give us rest. And when I

  232. listened to Ben Sharer, I clearly felt

  233. that word busy, the rush, the busyiness

  234. of life. That's what God wanted me to

  235. share about today. Our lives are so

  236. busy. Sometimes we can trick oursel that

  237. we're almost too busy to come to God

  238. with our problems, but we try and solve

  239. them ourselves. A quick Google search or

  240. talk about them with someone else or

  241. maybe just let them bubble and fester

  242. away inside.

  243. Steve came last week and shared about

  244. being poised again right with what was

  245. being stirred in my heart.

  246. So I've titled my message today busy

  247. find rest.

  248. I want you to notice a common theme in

  249. the following verses as I read them. In

  250. Matthew 9 Jesus traveled through all the

  251. towns and villages of that area teaching

  252. in the synagogues announcing the good

  253. news about the kingdom. And he healed

  254. every kind of disease and illness. You

  255. see, he didn't just go to the big towns.

  256. He went even to the villages and healed

  257. every illness, which would mean on any

  258. person, not just certain types of

  259. people. In Matthew 4:18, one day as

    Matthew 4:18

  260. Jesus was walking along the shore of the

  261. Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,

  262. Simon, also called Peter and Andrew,

  263. throwing a net in the water, for they

  264. fish for a living. Note, he took the

  265. time to walk along the shore.

  266. In Matthew 14, when Jesus heard the

  267. news, that was a news about um them

  268. wanting to kill John the Baptist, he

  269. left in a boat to a remote area to be

  270. alone.

  271. After sending them home, he went up into

  272. the hills by himself to pray. Night fell

  273. while he was there alone. In Matthew 15,

  274. Jesus returned to the sea and climbed a

  275. hill and sat down.

  276. In Mark 10, Jesus was walking ahead of

  277. them. In Mark 11, as Jesus was walking

  278. through the temple area. In John 1, as

  279. Jesus walked by. In John 10, Jesus was

  280. in the temple courts walking in

  281. Solomon's colonade.

  282. And as I look at Jesus life and

  283. ministry, I notice something. Jesus was

  284. never rushed.

  285. He walked. He left to be alone. He went

  286. places by himself. He sat down.

  287. The Bible does not record Jesus running

  288. or jogging or skipping or rushing or

  289. even fast walking.

  290. He walked, he waited, he withdrew to

  291. spend time alone. His ministry covered

  292. three years. Yet what was learned and

  293. taught in that time is still spoken of

  294. today.

  295. Is still relevant today. Yet he didn't

  296. rush.

  297. Steve mentioned last week in his sermon

  298. when Lazarus was ill, they called him

  299. and he waited two days before going

  300. back.

  301. He didn't rush. He took time to break

  302. bread with his disciples.

  303. He stopped and talked to people along

  304. the way, to teach a crowd a valuable

  305. lesson, to go to someone's house that

  306. someone else would go to, to speak to

  307. someone who others overlooked. Jesus

  308. behavior was not rushed. He was busy. He

  309. did a lot of teaching. He went to a lot

  310. of places, but he was never rushed.

  311. You see, walking was a way of life for

  312. Jesus. His ministry involved extensive

  313. walking, often long distances.

  314. He set a deliberate pace. He chose slow

  315. travel, walking or even riding a donkey.

  316. and he rem remained present. He never

  317. appeared rushed even when people pursued

  318. him.

  319. He escaped danger in Luke 4:28-30. When

    Luke 4:28–30

  320. the people of Nazareth tried to throw

  321. him off a cliff, he walked through the

  322. crowd and went his way. He didn't run

  323. away from trouble and he had a focus on

  324. others. He didn't chase after betrayers

  325. like Judas did. Instead, he allowed

  326. events to unfold, ultimately even

  327. allowing his own death on a cross to

  328. unfold as the father intended.

  329. Let me bring this together. In 1 John

    1 John 2:6

  330. 2:6, it tells us, "Whoever claims to

  331. live like him must live as Jesus did."

  332. In Mark 2:13-14,

    Mark 2:13–14

  333. Jesus said to Levi, "Come follow me."

  334. And Levi followed him.

  335. Jesus calls us follow him. So

  336. practically speaking, if Jesus walks, he

  337. wants us to walk. He wants us to follow

  338. him. If Jesus didn't rush, as those who

  339. believe and follow him, we should also

  340. not rush.

  341. If you don't know the direction to

  342. someone's house and you've got your car

  343. and I've got my car, I might say,

  344. "Follow me. I'll I'll show you the way

  345. to get there."

  346. It would make no sense then for you to

  347. speed past me because you don't know

  348. where you're going. So if Jesus didn't

  349. rush, why would we sprint past him if

  350. he's asked us to follow him? Following

  351. someone means you need to go at their

  352. pace.

  353. If I go walking with a friend for

  354. exercise, we can crack a fair pace, get

  355. the heart pumping.

  356. But if I take grandma to the shop, I

  357. have to change that pace so that I can

  358. walk alongside of her.

  359. So, how do we change from the busyiness

  360. of life, that rush of so much to do to

  361. find rest in God, in his word? There are

  362. stories and examples. There's wisdom.

  363. There's revelation. God speaks through

  364. the scriptures. I decided the end of

  365. last year, I want to read through the

  366. Bible again. But I don't want to set

  367. myself up for failure. So, I chose to do

  368. it in a way that's achievable. And for

  369. me, that was doing it over a year. Of

  370. course, I can do it quicker if it turns

  371. out that way, which maybe it will, but I

  372. didn't want to choose a time frame which

  373. made it a chore or a burden or

  374. unattainable. So, I found a guide that

  375. looked achievable. It estimates about 15

  376. minutes a day. I can do that. I spend

  377. more time than that on social media

  378. every day, so I'm choosing to do a bit

  379. less scrolling and more reading. The

  380. plan I chose has a guide for six days of

  381. the week of what to read.

  382. allowing time on the seventh day to

  383. catch up on things you may have missed.

  384. For me, that was important. Things

  385. happen. Well-intended plans don't

  386. happen. And so, I've poised myself for

  387. success and not failure. And so far,

  388. I've ended up reading more than intended

  389. each day because some of the Old

  390. Testament is actually a really good

  391. read. The stories are incredible. How

  392. long they live for, what they conquered,

  393. the trust and faith they had. It's easy

  394. to read things in the Old Testament and

  395. not understand it properly. You've got

  396. to slow down. You've got to go deeper.

  397. You've got to find out more. When the

  398. Israelites were freed by God from Egypt,

  399. it took 40 years of wandering the desert

  400. before God allowed them to enter the

  401. promised land. The time they spent

  402. waiting on God. For 40 years, they had

  403. to learn to trust God again.

  404. changing from that slave mentality to

  405. the mentality of a free people. The fear

  406. and disobedience just added to that

  407. time. 40 years. You think of that, you

  408. think that seems like a long time. I can

  409. still say I haven't even been alive for

  410. that long.

  411. Just

  412. they had to wait on God. But think about

  413. it. How often do we wait for something

  414. that we really want? How many people

  415. long to buy a brand new car one day and

  416. then when you're 60 or 70 you finally

  417. get to buy that brand new car or that

  418. holiday to Europe that you work all your

  419. life to make

  420. to see a friend from school that you

  421. haven't seen for 60 years and you

  422. finally see again. Many of us wait for

  423. years for our miracle that cure to be

  424. declared healthy for that baby for those

  425. loved ones. The thing is, we wait if

  426. it's something that we want. But when

  427. God asks us patience, it's so hard.

  428. When we have to wait two years for a

  429. surgery, it's not fair. The thing is is

  430. that we are living in a society, a

  431. generation of rush. We have access to

  432. everything at our fingertips. We are on

  433. call, alert, accessible, informed, and

  434. reachable all of the time. We are rushed

  435. all of the time. My children will tell

  436. me off if they open my phone and they've

  437. got I've got too many tabs open. You

  438. have to swipe them up to get rid of

  439. them. But sometimes that's exactly what

  440. my brain feels like. I've got so many

  441. thoughts and tabs open in my mind at

  442. once. So many that you can't actually

  443. begin to sort them out. It's important

  444. for us to live out of rest, not full

  445. rest.

  446. Matthew 11:29-30

    Matthew 11:29–30

  447. says, "Come to me, all you who are weary

  448. and burdened, and I will give you rest.

  449. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,

  450. for I am gentle and humble in heart. You

  451. will find rest for your soul. My yoke is

  452. easy, my burden is light."

  453. There's I've got this book on Hebrew

  454. words, and there was a really good

  455. little bit in there on rest.

  456. It says, "When he said, "I will give you

  457. rest." He was quoting from the book of

  458. Exodus when Moses asked God to teach him

  459. how to know the Father better. In

  460. response to this request, God replied,

  461. "My presence will go with you and I will

  462. give you rest." That's in Exodus 33.

  463. Was saying that if Moses faithfully

  464. followed the Lord's commands, he would

  465. know God better and be rested. The

  466. Hebrew word for rest in this verse is

  467. new, which means to be settled and

  468. comforted.

  469. How can you find rest today? It's

  470. simple. Rest or newuck comes when you

  471. devote yourself to being faithful in

  472. following Jesus. That's when you'll feel

  473. settled.

  474. You see, when we take God's yoke upon

  475. us,

  476. we are walking in tune with him, walking

  477. in his rest. His yoke is easy. The

  478. burden is actually lighter. We are able

  479. to then step out in rest. When we come

  480. to him, we learn those unforced rhythms

  481. of grace. A shift from the life of

  482. striving, pressure, and legalism into a

  483. life of ease and freedom and intimacy

  484. with God. We take his yoke upon us. It

  485. focuses the idea of being with Jesus

  486. rather than doing things for him. The

  487. value of connection, letting go of the

  488. ended to control or fix everything and

  489. instead trusting that God will bear the

  490. weight.

  491. Come to me. We are following God's pace,

  492. not ours. Walking, not running. He will

  493. give us rest. He will help us with our

  494. burdens. He will help us find rest.

  495. Everything we need to find rest is in

  496. him.

  497. At a conference a couple of years ago, I

  498. heard a lady speak on emotional

  499. intelligence, and it was really

  500. interesting listening to what she had to

  501. say. She said something I continue to

  502. remember. She talked about using the

  503. word busy as simple as, "Oh, how are

  504. you?" "Oh, I'm so busy." She talked

  505. about how straight away that can shut

  506. down a conversation. Do they have time

  507. for me? They're busy. Maybe I'm not as

  508. important as them. And went on to talk

  509. about the different kinds of busy, good

  510. and bad. And that stuck with me. Not all

  511. busy is bad. There are many periods in

  512. our life where we are busy. We have

  513. young families during times of study

  514. during certain career moments in your

  515. life. I've observed for a lot of people

  516. the busiest times in their life is when

  517. they have grandchildren and aging

  518. parents and are still working. Good busy

  519. can be fulfilling and enriching. But bad

  520. busy is overwhelming, consuming and

  521. limiting. I want a good busy fulfilling

  522. life with time to do the things I enjoy,

  523. not rushed.

  524. So, I've put together a few key points

  525. that I thought can help getting that

  526. balance to feel less rushed.

  527. The first point is you must prioritize

  528. God. It seems pretty easy, right?

  529. Logical even. I mean, we're all here

  530. this morning, so we can tick that one

  531. off. No further explanation needed.

  532. Unfortunately, it is a little bit more

  533. than that. is more than just an hour a

  534. week or a quick, "Oh, thanks God for

  535. letting me get a park ride outside the

  536. shop door.

  537. It's getting up each day and saying,

  538. "I'm intentionally going to put you

  539. first today, God." It's making a

  540. deliberate choice to choose God, to

  541. choose to make him a priority.

  542. I've decided to read the Bible more and

  543. read it through. So, if I'm going to

  544. spend half an hour reading, something

  545. else has to give. There are only 24

  546. hours in a day.

  547. Maybe I put down my phone earlier and

  548. make a choice to read instead of scroll.

  549. Maybe I choose to listen to some worship

  550. or praise music instead of music that I

  551. might normally listen to. And it doesn't

  552. mean all the time. You're allowed to

  553. enjoy music and what shows that you

  554. enjoy. But it's about making small

  555. sacrifices to prioritize God. Perhaps

  556. you come to church once a month.

  557. Challenge yourself to come twice a

  558. month. Perhaps you come every week.

  559. Maybe it's time to challenge yourself to

  560. volunteer in a different capacity. Maybe

  561. you have a great prayer life. But maybe

  562. you need to prioritize God with your

  563. finances or another area of your life

  564. that you struggle with.

  565. Proverbs 16:3 says, "Commmit to the Lord

    Proverbs 16:3

  566. whatever you do, and he will establish

  567. your plans in everything you do. When

  568. you put God first, he will direct and

  569. crown your efforts with success."

  570. Maybe it's God. I don't know what the

  571. right choice is. Proverbs 3:6 says,

    Proverbs 3:6

  572. "Seek his will in all you do, and he

  573. will show you the path to take." If it

  574. just feels so complicated or everything

  575. so overwhelming where you don't know if

  576. you can give it all to God, think of

  577. what was written in Amos 5'8. He who

  578. made Palades and Oran, who turns

  579. midnight into dawn, darkness darkens day

  580. into night, who calls for the waters of

  581. the sea and pours them over the face of

  582. the land. The Lord is his name. He is an

  583. all powerful God. It doesn't matter what

  584. the burden, what the issue, what the

  585. need, he can handle it.

  586. We know that to find rest, we must

  587. prioritize God. We've heard it said. The

  588. thing is getting the information is good

  589. and even be life-changing some

  590. information but if that information is

  591. not taken in and given the time it needs

  592. to transform behaviors or your health or

  593. your mind it'll only ever be

  594. information.

  595. Transformation takes time. The doctor

  596. can tell you your blood pressure is

  597. high. You need to reduce your salt

  598. intake. Maybe lose some weight to

  599. control your blood pressure. They can

  600. print out a handout and give it to you.

  601. But if that handout sits on the floor of

  602. the backseat of the car, that will never

  603. change your life.

  604. The information is good. It's lifech

  605. changing,

  606. but it needs to come inside. It needs to

  607. be stuck on your fridge and over the

  608. next few months, you need to start to

  609. read it and apply it. Maybe reduce a bit

  610. of salt in your cooking or start to just

  611. go for little walks. And over time, that

  612. information becomes real and

  613. transformational.

  614. It's the same with God. Prioritizing God

  615. becomes transformational in our lives.

  616. We know God loves us. We know he wants

  617. the best for us. We may understand some

  618. of the character of God, but to go more

  619. deeply in a relationship where we can

  620. unconditionally trust and prioritize

  621. God. We need to make what we know as

  622. information into transformation.

  623. We can provide you a a Bible verse on a

  624. card to take at the end of the service

  625. or a print out or a reading plan to

  626. strengthen your Bible reading. But if

  627. it's never used or never prayed upon or

  628. never discussed, it will always just be

  629. words on a printout. If you read it,

  630. think about what it means to you and how

  631. to apply it. It begins to transform your

  632. life.

  633. Isaiah 40:31 says, "Those who hope in

    Isaiah 40:31

  634. the Lord will renew their strength. They

  635. will soar on wings like eagles. They

  636. will run and not grow weary. And they

  637. will walk and not be faint.

  638. The second point is it's okay to say no.

  639. And I strongly feel that for some people

  640. this is something you need to hear. It's

  641. okay to say no. Sometimes is actually

  642. necessary.

  643. I've had significant health issues over

  644. the last almost 10 years. There have

  645. been times in there I have been very

  646. productive, very well, very capable and

  647. very balanced. And there are times in

  648. there that I've had to step back. I've

  649. had to say no. And I've realized it's

  650. okay. You do not need to be involved in

  651. everything.

  652. And this applies both inside and outside

  653. of the church. I want to make it clear

  654. when we need rest, it doesn't mean to

  655. stop everything you do outside the

  656. church and suddenly spend all your time

  657. in the church. We must never get so busy

  658. doing that we forget what our first love

  659. is. And when I did say no, I discovered

  660. something. Do you want to know what it

  661. is? I discovered that the world

  662. continues to spin when I step back. It's

  663. okay to say no. I've said no when asked

  664. to help organize things or go somewhere

  665. or be involved in something. And those

  666. things went on perfectly fine without

  667. me. and it allowed me to make my

  668. priorities right and put my focus where

  669. it needed to be at that time. See, faith

  670. doesn't always look like confidence.

  671. Sometimes it looks like staying,

  672. trusting, and showing up while God is

  673. still right in the middle of the story.

  674. Matthew 6:25 says, "Don't worry about

    Matthew 6:25

  675. God's about life's needs. God's will

  676. provide."

  677. Jesus goes so far in the sermon on the

  678. mount in Matthew 5 to say, "Let what you

  679. say be simply yes or no." It's simple.

  680. No proviso. No, oh, if this happens,

  681. maybe I'll be able to do this. If you

  682. need to say no, say no. No should mean a

  683. clear refusal. It's honest

  684. communication. It's simple, direct

  685. speech rather than manipulation.

  686. The Apostle Paul wrote some guidance

  687. about the importance of setting up

  688. boundaries in Titus 2. For the grace of

  689. God has appeared, bringing salvation for

  690. all people, training us to renounce

  691. ungodliness and worldly passions, and to

  692. live a self-controlled, upright, and

  693. godly lives in the present age. We need

  694. to say no to temptation, to

  695. overcommitment, to unhealthy demands, no

  696. to people pleasing. We need boundaries

  697. to prioritize Christ, and to rest in our

  698. own lives.

  699. The third point,

  700. it's okay to say yes. Hang on, but I

  701. just said it's okay to say no, but on

  702. the other hand, it's okay to say yes. In

  703. fact, it's good to say yes when the

  704. situation is right. The point goes hand

  705. in hand with the previous one. Yes

  706. should mean a firm commitment. In 2

  707. Corinthians 1:19:20, it's written, "As

  708. God's ultimate yes, he always does what

  709. he says, for God's promises have been

  710. fulfilled in Christ with a resounding

  711. yes." Yes can show consistency in

  712. character. Yes can be a sign of

  713. surrender to God and accepting his

  714. salvation, particularly in your life.

  715. Yes to prioritizing God's will. Yes, I'm

  716. going to try something new. I'm going to

  717. invite someone for a coffee.

  718. Maybe it's time to say yes to a coffee

  719. invitation. Maybe it's saying yes to

  720. staying after popup to study the Bible.

  721. Yes, Lord, I commit to read more of your

  722. word. Saying no to the distractions that

  723. hold you back. Maybe it's that extra

  724. task at work or volunteering now and

  725. again in the classroom. I had said no

  726. when I needed time to balance my health,

  727. work, and family.

  728. But I have said yes when the time is

  729. right.

  730. I said yes last year to step back on the

  731. board because I felt the time was right.

  732. And as it turns out, everything with

  733. God's hand on it works in his favor. I

  734. stepped back on the board and now I've

  735. put my hand up to chair the board. It's

  736. okay to say yes. And sometimes saying

  737. yes is is to a calling we don't even

  738. fully understand, but we know that God

  739. wants us to say yes. to trust before we

  740. see it unfold.

  741. To say yes while your heart is still

  742. full of questions.

  743. To learn that obedience doesn't require

  744. clarity. Only surrender. The same God

  745. who overshadowed Mary will continue to

  746. cover our uncertainty, too. He will do

  747. what he promised. Deuteronomy 31:6

    Deuteronomy 31:6

  748. reminds us,

  749. be strong. So, be strong and courageous.

  750. Do not be afraid and do not panic before

  751. them. For the Lord your God will

  752. personally go ahead of you. He will

  753. neither fail you or abandon you. So

  754. think about today what God might be

  755. wanting you to say yes to in your life.

  756. And on the same hand, what he might be

  757. wanting you to say no to.

  758. The fourth point is balance is

  759. important. Life should be about balance.

  760. God wants us to find rest. Even God

  761. rested. In Genesis 2 2:3 we read on the

  762. seventh day God had finished his work of

  763. creation. So he rested from all of his

  764. work. And God blessed the seventh day

  765. and declared it holy because it was the

  766. day when he rested from all his work of

  767. creation. Even God rested. It's an

  768. important part of balance to rest to

  769. cease the rushing to spend time slowing

  770. down. It's one of the keys to our health

  771. to reducing stress. Our society has

  772. record high levels of stress, burnout,

  773. depression, anxiety, but also record

  774. high levels of unrest. How many people

  775. haven't had a proper holiday in years?

  776. Even taking a day off here and there, it

  777. actually takes three days on holidays to

  778. de-stress. You have to be on holidays

  779. for at least three days before your body

  780. actually starts to decompress and

  781. recharge.

  782. Jeremiah 29:11 says, "I know the plans I

    Jeremiah 29:11

  783. have for you, said the Lord. They're

  784. plans for good and not disaster, to give

  785. you future and a hope." So you see, the

  786. dreams God planted in your heart were

  787. planted for a reason. Chase it and trust

  788. that God will guide you to achieve it.

  789. Spending one hour on something a week

  790. will not help you earn that certificate

  791. or knowledge. Knitting for one hour a

  792. week will not improve your skill, just

  793. maintain it.

  794. To improve your knowledge, your

  795. relationship, your skills, you need to

  796. apply yourself regularly. You have to

  797. spend time with another person to get to

  798. know them. One hour a week in church

  799. will not be enough to get to know God at

  800. the level he wants to know you. We are

  801. wired to be anxious and stressed and

  802. worried, always thinking about the next

  803. thing. But the Bible tells us your worry

  804. won't will not change the situation.

  805. Psalm 55:22 reminds us to cast your

    Psalms 55:22

  806. cares on the Lord and he will sustain

  807. you. He will never let the righteous be

  808. shaken.

  809. We need to come to God to sit back and

  810. to let God develop you so that you are

  811. better for tomorrow instead of you

  812. trying to develop tomorrow. Does that

  813. make sense? I'll say it again. Sit back

  814. and let God develop you so that you are

  815. better for tomorrow instead of you

  816. trying to develop tomorrow.

  817. In Psalm 46, the whole chapter remind us

  818. reminds us, but in particularly verse

  819. 10, be still and know that I am God.

  820. I've heard Ben say it many times. God is

  821. God and we are not.

  822. We need to get that balance right.

  823. There's a beautiful verse in Psalm 911.

  824. Whoever dwells in the shelter of the

  825. high will rest in the shadow of the

  826. almighty. Like shade on a day like today

  827. gives you rest. Dwelling in the shadow

  828. of the most high will also give you

  829. rest. Rest for your soul.

  830. And my last point is slow down.

  831. Real rest and real grow growth takes

  832. time. Big changes to technology in our

  833. history have taken time. Sure, we get a

  834. new phone update every year with minor

  835. adjustments.

  836. The latest smartphone is somewhat better

  837. than the one the year before, but it

  838. doesn't change that much from year to

  839. year really.

  840. But you look at the initial mobile phone

  841. technology from that big brick to what

  842. you hold in your hand. It took time. It

  843. took 20 years to transform that. Big

  844. change takes time. Transformations take

  845. time.

  846. Do you know where the number one moment

  847. people get their aha moments is? The

  848. number one place that people get that

  849. aha moment.

  850. Close in the shower. The second number

  851. one is in bed. Why do you think that is?

  852. Cuz you're literally doing nothing.

  853. You're standing in the shower. You

  854. hardly walk. You're standing still. You

  855. can't answer your phone. You can't

  856. scroll. you can't watch something.

  857. You're literally standing still.

  858. It's it's a time where you can clear

  859. your mind to gather your thoughts.

  860. For me, I do that every morning. I clear

  861. my mind. I gather my thoughts. And

  862. before bed, I do again. I consciously

  863. made a choice to clear the thoughts from

  864. my mind. I've experienced a lot of times

  865. where I've had a lot of trouble sleeping

  866. and still do sometimes. But what I've

  867. done is a small routine to help me clear

  868. my head and allow my mind to rest. I've

  869. disciplined myself not to use my phone

  870. at night. If I can't sleep, I will lie

  871. there. I will [snorts] not open it up

  872. because on the phone there are so many

  873. things vying for my attention and not

  874. good things. things that will give me

  875. more worries, more stress, consume my

  876. time and my thoughts, leaving me with

  877. less time to rest. So many concerns and

  878. burdens that I don't need to take on.

  879. And since I've been consciously doing

  880. this, I'm finding that most days I can

  881. fall asleep within minutes.

  882. President Ronald Rean walked a lot. He

  883. rested and recharged, and he was known

  884. to make some good decisions. Steve Jobs

  885. was similar. He took deliberate walks

  886. every day. He slowed down and achieved a

  887. lot spiritually in your heart. God can

  888. transform you immediately when you come

  889. to know him. But it takes time to make

  890. those deeper spiritual changes. We have

  891. to slow down and make conscious changes

  892. to our life to allow that transformation

  893. to take place. God gives us scriptures

  894. and guidance to teach us how to grow in

  895. him in our hearts. Not just with our

  896. mind, but our hearts, our actions, and

  897. our lifestyles.

  898. Learning to find rest and prioritize God

  899. takes time. It takes a willing,

  900. deliberate choice to slow down

  901. and be better. You think about love.

  902. Infatuation is immediate. You see

  903. someone and you're infatuated. But love

  904. is a decision that takes time and a lot

  905. of work.

  906. We come to know God and accept him and

  907. we have that instant infatuation. But to

  908. learn to rest in God and trust him and

  909. love him is a decision that takes time.

  910. There's a quote from CS Lewis that says,

  911. "When first things are put first, second

  912. things are not suppressed but

  913. increased." What does that mean? If your

  914. priorities are are right and the first

  915. thing is first, the second thing can be

  916. added and succeed. However, if you try

  917. and put those second things first, you

  918. end up losing both.

  919. In other words, God has to be the

  920. priority. God has to be the first thing.

  921. Then the things that are added are not

  922. suppressed but increased over time. The

  923. faith, the friendships, the growth, the

  924. success, the breakthrough, the finances,

  925. the job, those relationships.

  926. But if those things are our priority and

  927. we add God in, it'll end up in failure.

  928. Prioritizing God is not something that's

  929. as easy as an overnight change. It's an

  930. ongoing deliberate action which like any

  931. change in your life is difficult to

  932. begin with but over time becomes easier

  933. and second nature.

  934. I want to end by reading some of Psalm

  935. 91.

  936. Those who live in the shelter of the

  937. most high will find rest in the shadow

  938. of the almighty. This I declare about

  939. the Lord. He alone is my refuge, my

  940. place of safety. He is my God and I

  941. trust him. For he will rescue you from

  942. every trap, protect you from deadly

  943. disease. He will cover you with his

  944. feathers. He will shelter you with his

  945. wings. His faithful promises are your

  946. armor and protection.

  947. Do not be afraid of the terrors of the

  948. night, nor the arrow that flies in the

  949. day. Do not dread the disease that

  950. stalks in the darkness, nor the disaster

  951. that strikes at midday. Though a

  952. thousand will fall at your side, though

  953. 10,000 are dying around you, those evils

  954. will not touch you. The Lord says, "I

  955. will rescue those who love me, I will

  956. protect those who trust in my name. When

  957. they call on me, I will answer. I will

  958. be with them in trouble. I will rescue

  959. and honor them. I will reward them with

  960. a long life and give them my salvation."

  961. I don't think it's a coincidence that

  962. God's given us a bit of a theme to start

  963. the year. It's no coincidence that Ben

  964. reminded us that God wants us to come to

  965. him. It's no coincidence that Steve

  966. reminded us to be poised, to be ready

  967. for what God wants to do. And it's no

  968. coincidence that God's been speaking to

  969. me since last year about slowing the

  970. rush.

  971. Slowing down, removing distractions,

  972. focusing on him. It's no coincidence

  973. that you're here today hearing those

  974. words. God has so much he wants to do in

  975. your life. He just wants us to come to

  976. be poised and to find rest. How do we do

  977. that? We make God our priority.

  978. I really feel that this will be an

  979. incredible year of growth for us as a

  980. church. We had our f first board meeting

  981. this week and we are feeling really

  982. excited. We're really looking forward to
