  1. Good morning everyone.

  2. >> How you all doing?

  3. Enjoying the cool change. Got some sleep

  4. last night. Yes, it's amazing. Just felt

  5. like just with the sense of what's

  6. happening in the meeting this morning

  7. that I should just share the word right

  8. now. um because it just flows with what

  9. we've been talking about lately,

  10. preparing ourselves for the year and and

  11. getting ready for what God is doing and

  12. drawing close to him. As you would be

  13. aware, last Sunday we uh prayed for

  14. Hamish as he starts his new role as the

  15. youth pastor here at the church. And I

  16. shared a scripture with him if you

  17. remember, if you were here. If you

  18. weren't, that's okay. But I shared a

  19. scripture from 1 John 4:4. And this is

    1 John 4:4

  20. from the New Living Translation and it

  21. says, "But you belong to God, my dear

  22. children. You have already won a victory

  23. over those people because the spirit who

  24. lives in you is greater than the spirit

  25. who lives in the world." Now what John

  26. is doing, he's writing to the church at

  27. that time and they were under a lot of

  28. persecution. There was all sorts of

  29. things happening in their world. They

  30. were under the dominion of the Roman

  31. Empire and there's a lot of pressures on

  32. the church and he's reminding them

  33. that the spirit in them and this is the

  34. thing he's not talking about their

  35. spirit like their ability to have spirit

  36. and go and whatever he's talking about

  37. the holy spirit in them is greater

  38. than the spirit who lives in the world.

  39. All those things that would try to

  40. dominate and rule and and dominate our

  41. minds, God's spirit in us is greater.

  42. And this is the thing as I shared that

  43. passage with Hamish,

  44. the thing that's been crazy is it hasn't

  45. left me all weak. And uh and I just felt

  46. really strongly that it was more than

  47. just something to encourage Hamish. So,

  48. I believe it's something to encourage

  49. all of us here in the church, especially

  50. as we embark on 2026.

  51. So, let's just pray and then we'll get

  52. straight into his word.

  53. Lord God, we thank you. We thank you of

  54. your presence in this place

  55. that you are here amongst us, but even

  56. more importantly, you are in us.

  57. I pray that as we share today, as I

  58. share, that you would speak deeply into

  59. our very being and bring change and

  60. transformation in Jesus' name. Amen.

  61. See, I believe God wants to remind us

  62. that he has given us his Holy Spirit.

  63. He's given us his Holy Spirit to help us

  64. live the life

  65. of a follower of Jesus.

  66. As you all would know, but let's remind

  67. ourselves of this is that when we the

  68. Bible tells us that when we confess with

  69. our mouths and believe in our heart that

  70. Jesus is God,

  71. says that we will be saved, that we will

  72. become children of God. And what that

  73. means that when we're saved is in that

  74. moment when we declare that we want God

  75. to sit on the throne of our lives and we

  76. want him to be Lord and he is God and we

  77. give him our lives. It says that the

  78. spirit of God we receive the Holy Spirit

  79. and that he comes and lives in us to

  80. help us live as Jesus lived. Another way

  81. the Bible describes this is that we are

  82. the temple of the Holy Spirit.

  83. God doesn't dwell in buildings anymore

  84. or in tabernacles. He dwells in us.

  85. And I believe God wants to remind us of

  86. that this morning.

  87. And as we embark on this year that we

  88. carry the presence of God in us. In John

  89. 3, Jesus described this as being born

  90. again. And he says in John 3:es 5-7 he

  91. says very truly I tell you he's talking

  92. to Nicodemus here no one can enter the

  93. kingdom of God unless they are born of

  94. water which we all have been and the

  95. spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh but

  96. the spirit gives birth to spirit. You

  97. should not be surprised at my saying you

  98. must be born again. This is God's

  99. encouragement to us that we need to be

  100. born again.

  101. God's spirit connects with our spirit to

  102. make us alive again in God to be a part

  103. of his kingdom. There's many verses

  104. where this is confirmed.

  105. Romans 8:11 it says, "And if the spirit

    Romans 8:11

  106. of him who raised Christ from the dead

  107. is living in you, he who was raised, he

  108. who raised Christ from the dead will

  109. also give life to your mortal bodies

  110. because of his spirit who lives in you."

  111. Did you hear that?

  112. God's spirit lives in you.

  113. Romans 8:15-16 says, "The spirit you

    Romans 8:15–16

  114. received does not make you slaves so

  115. that you live in fear again. Rather, the

  116. spirit you received when you became a

  117. Christian brought you brought about your

  118. adoption to sunship. And by him we cry,

  119. Abba, Father, the Spirit himself

  120. testifies with our spirit that we are

  121. God's children."

  122. Think about that for a moment. You and I

  123. are God's children.

  124. That means we receive

  125. all the benefits of being God's

  126. children. Anyone who's a parent here,

  127. your children receive all the benefits

  128. of being your children.

  129. Think about that for a moment.

  130. Maybe if you're not a parent, but you

  131. think about to when you were living in

  132. your parents' home and all the benefits

  133. that came from living in your parents'

  134. home.

  135. Ephesians 1:3-13-14

    Ephesians 1:3–13

  136. says, "In him you also, when you heard

  137. the word of truth, the gospel of your

  138. salvation, and believed in him, were

  139. sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

  140. who is the guarantee of our inheritance

  141. until we acquire possession of it to the

  142. praise of his glory." What does that

  143. mean? It means if we're God's children,

  144. we inherit everything God has for us.

  145. One of those things is eternal life. But

  146. even more than that, it's a relationship

  147. with God and all the benefits that has.

  148. In John 4:23-

    John 4:23–24

  149. 24, Jesus is talking to the woman at the

  150. well, and he says, "Yet a time is coming

  151. and has now come when the true

  152. worshippers will worship the father in

  153. the spirit and in truth. For they are

  154. the kind of worshippers the father

  155. seeks. God is spirit, and his

  156. worshippers must worship in spirit and

  157. in truth." What that's telling us is God

  158. no longer wants to dwell in buildings

  159. or temples or altars. He wants to dwell

  160. in us. We are his temple now and he

  161. wants to dwell in us. Let's dig into

  162. this a little bit deeper because in John

    John 14:25–27

  163. 14 verse 25-27, Jesus explained that

  164. once he died and went to be with the

  165. father again, we don't need to be

  166. troubled

  167. because he would send a helper to

  168. continue his legacy. Whoops, lost that

  169. one. says, "All I have spoken while

  170. still with you." All this I have spoken

  171. while still with you. That's right,

  172. Jackie. Finish that page.

  173. And he says there 26, "But the advocate,

  174. the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will

  175. send in my name, will teach you all

  176. things and will remind you of everything

  177. I have said. Peace I leave with you. My

  178. peace I give you. I do not give you as

  179. the world gives. Do not let your hearts

  180. be troubled and do not be afraid. And

  181. then in John 16, a couple of chapters

  182. later, he says these words,

  183. "Nevertheless, I tell you the truth. It

  184. is to your advantage that I go away. For

  185. if I do not go go away, the helper will

  186. not come to you. But if I go, I will

  187. send him to you. And when he comes, he

  188. will convict the world concerning sin

  189. and righteousness and judgment. See, in

  190. all these passages I've just shared, we

  191. learn that the role of the Holy Spirit

  192. is very, very clear.

  193. He confirms who we are as children of

  194. God. He It confirms that we have been

  195. adopted into God's family. How good is

  196. that, church?

  197. >> Are you excited about that? That is

  198. something to be excited about. But he

  199. also convicts us of sin as Jesus says,

  200. which is very interesting fact because

  201. we like to convict other people of sin,

  202. don't we? We like to tell them all the

  203. things they're doing wrong. But the

  204. Bible teaches us that it is the Holy

  205. Spirit who truly convicts us of sin and

  206. knows that reminds us of when we are

  207. going the wrong direction.

  208. He leads us into all truth. The Bible

  209. teaches us. He leads us to what is true

  210. and right. He leads us into how we

  211. should live our life in his

  212. righteousness. He leads us into the

  213. truth that we know that everything I

  214. have is only possible because of what

  215. God has done for me. And it is God's

  216. incredible gift to us. All I need to do

  217. is come to him. and I receive all that

  218. he has. The Holy Spirit also exists to

  219. reveal Jesus to us. In that passage, in

  220. the first passage, it says, "We'll teach

  221. you all things and remind you of

  222. everything I have said to you." One of

  223. the roles of the Holy Spirit is to

  224. reveal Jesus to us, to remind us of what

  225. Jesus has taught us, to remind us of

  226. what Jesus has given us.

  227. Even this morning as as we were

  228. worshiping, Linda came up and shared

  229. something that came into her heart to

  230. remind us that Jesus is our healer and

  231. that in him we can find wholeness and

  232. healing in every aspect of our life.

  233. And finally, the Holy Spirit empowers us

  234. to walk the Christian walk.

  235. The names that Jesus gives the Holy

  236. Spirit are names like comforter,

  237. encourager,

  238. advocate. What's an advocate? Someone

  239. who stands by you and supports you

  240. through all things that you're going

  241. through.

  242. And this is the incredible gift that God

  243. has given us, his spirit in us. And I I

  244. really sense that God wants to remind us

  245. of this truth. We are not doing this on

  246. our own.

  247. God is with us. He is in us and he wants

  248. to empower us. He wants to strengthen

  249. us. But most importantly, he wants to

  250. lead us.

  251. Galatians 5 explains this how this

  252. relationship with the Holy Spirit w

  253. works. Says, "So I say, walk by the

  254. spirit," talking about the Holy Spirit,

  255. "and you will not gratify the desires of

  256. the flesh. For the flesh desires what is

  257. contrary to the spirit and the spirit

  258. what is contrary to the flesh. They are

  259. in conflict with each other so that you

  260. are not to do whatever you want. But it

  261. says then but if you are led by the

  262. spirit you are not under the law.

  263. Basically he's talking about the law

  264. that the Jews were called to follow.

  265. that no longer that when we choose to be

  266. led by God's spirit

  267. and we allow God's spirit to guide us

  268. and lead us and we walk with the spirit

  269. and by the spirit walk in step the

  270. spirit we ask the holy spirit to lead us

  271. and guide us and help us live this life

  272. we don't come under any law then because

  273. we are under the law of Christ and if we

  274. are under the law of Christ then any law

  275. of the land doesn't affect us. That

  276. doesn't mean you go breaking the law

  277. like start speeding down the road. No,

  278. you obey the law because you know it's

  279. the right thing to do because you're

  280. allowing the Holy Spirit to lead and

  281. guide guide you. You know that when you

  282. think, "Oh, I'm going to lie to my

  283. boss." No, I shouldn't lie to my boss

  284. about why I took yesterday off.

  285. But we live to learn in honesty and

  286. openness. We come under his law. And if

  287. you read on in Galatians 5, he says,

  288. "The fruit of walking by the spirit is

  289. love, joy, patience, kindness." You

  290. remember them. Come back to Sunday

  291. school. Goodness.

  292. Oh, come on. Come on. Grace,

  293. don't forget.

  294. >> Gentle.

  295. >> That's the best one. Self-control. Who

  296. needs self-control?

  297. If you want self-control,

  298. you realize number one, first thing to

  299. you need to realize is the Holy Spirit's

  300. in you.

  301. And then the next step is to say, "Holy

  302. Spirit, lead me.

  303. Holy Spirit, come and take control. Holy

  304. Spirit, guide me where you want me to go

  305. and make sure help me to not go where

  306. you don't want me to go. give me

  307. self-control to choose you be before

  308. other things. You see this idea and it's

  309. important for us to understand the Bible

  310. teaches us that the Holy Spirit is a

  311. person.

  312. We are created in his image. So just

  313. like we are people, he is a person like

  314. we are a person. That doesn't mean he

  315. has flesh and all of that. He but in his

  316. nature he operates in the same way as

  317. us.

  318. So think about that means we can have a

  319. relationship with him but to have a

  320. relationship both sides have to give

  321. don't they? And so the simple idea is

  322. that

  323. as I lay my life down and say God follow

  324. lead me follow me he has done everything

  325. to make that possible. You see, God has

  326. done everything required for us to have

  327. a relationship with him. Jesus came to

  328. earth, died on a cross, and rose again

  329. so that we could have a relationship

  330. with God again. And so God has done

  331. everything. And so now our

  332. responsibility is to seek after him,

  333. to desire him, to to ask him to lead the

  334. way and show us where we should go.

  335. There's a really interesting passage in

  336. 1 Thessalonians

  337. um

  338. 5:17 and 19

  339. which uh if we read it, it says,

  340. "Rejoice always." Talking to us as

  341. Christians, "Rejoice always. Pray

  342. continually. Give thanks in all

  343. circumstances." This is what it's

  344. telling us to do. For this is God's will

  345. for you in Christ Jesus.

  346. Who wants to know God's will for your

  347. life?

  348. Here it is.

  349. God wants you to rejoice

  350. always. What's that mean? It means have

  351. joy in your life. Be excited about your

  352. life because why? Because you have the

  353. Holy Spirit in you. Have joy in your

  354. life because God has given you grace and

  355. Jesus has come died on a cross so that

  356. you don't have to face the penalty of

  357. sin which is death. You can have eternal

  358. life. Anyone excited about that?

  359. >> Anyone happy?

  360. >> Be excited that the fact rejoice always

  361. because of what God has done for you.

  362. This is what is Paul is encouraging the

  363. church of his day to do. He says, "Pray

  364. continually."

  365. We'll talk about this a little bit more

  366. in just a moment, but prayer is all

  367. about

  368. desiring and following after God, being

  369. God conscious. How do you pray

  370. continually? you if you think prayer is

  371. just words then you can't pray

  372. continually.

  373. But if you understand prayer is an

  374. attitude and a mindset and a God

  375. consciousness

  376. being aware of God in your life and

  377. watching for God. You know, one of the

  378. reasons I knew this God wanted me to

  379. preach this sermon this week is because

  380. early in the week, I was looking at my

  381. verse of the day, and I'll share it a

  382. little bit later, but it is exactly

  383. about what I wanted to preach about

  384. today. So, I was watchful and wanting to

  385. know what God was saying and doing

  386. because the Bible teaches us that God is

  387. always at work. He is always working. He

  388. is always moving. He's always acting.

  389. We have to get in the position to be

  390. watchful and ready. And that's what

  391. praying continuously is all about. Being

  392. watchful and ready to see what God is

  393. doing. And then the last one is give

  394. thanks in all circumstances, which is

  395. basically the idea of keeping a grateful

  396. heart no matter what is going on in your

  397. life. That I have God with me. So

  398. greater is he that is in me than

  399. anything that the world can throw at me.

  400. Isn't that right? But there's a really

  401. interesting part because that's what

  402. Paul is saying God's will is that we

  403. live in this space in this attitude in

  404. this mindset. But then he says these

  405. really significant words straight after

  406. this and do not quench the spirit

  407. talking about the Holy Spirit. It's as

  408. if Paul is reminding us that the only

  409. way we can do God's will in our lives

  410. is with the help of the Holy Spirit.

  411. If you want to be able to

  412. pray continuously, rejoice always, and

  413. give thanks in all things, you need the

  414. Holy Spirit to help you do that. So,

  415. don't quench the Holy Spirit.

  416. If you read it in the amplified, it says

  417. these words, "Do not quench,

  418. subdue, or be unresponsive to the

  419. working and guidance of the Holy

  420. Spirit."

  421. Let's read that again. Do not quench,

  422. subdue, or be responsive to the working

  423. and guidance of the Holy Spirit. Now to

  424. fully understand this text, as I read a

  425. few commentaries, it talked about the

  426. fact that we need to understand that

  427. Paul is talking as a Jew in relation to

  428. the law. A and the idea of the law and

  429. sacrifices. And this idea of quenching a

  430. fire because the Holy Spirit is

  431. described as a fire can directly be

  432. associated with a verse in Leviticus

  433. concerning instructions they gave God

  434. gave to priests about presenting

  435. suitable sacrifices. It's in Leviticus

    Leviticus 6:12–13

  436. 6:12-13.

  437. And it says this,

  438. "The fire on the altar, the altar that

  439. they've brought their sacrifices to must

  440. keep burning. It must not go out. Every

  441. morning the priest is to add firewood

  442. and arrange the burnt offering on the

  443. fire and the and burn the fat of the

  444. fellowship offerings on it. The fire

  445. must keep burning, must be kept burning

  446. on the altar continuously.

  447. It must not go out.

  448. Interestingly, Matt just shared before I

  449. came up to preach that we are a

  450. priesthood of believers.

  451. So it's no longer the responsibility of

  452. one person to keep the fire burning in

  453. this church family.

  454. It's each of our individual

  455. responsibilities to keep the fire

  456. burning in our heart. You see the fire

  457. represents the Holy Spirit.

  458. We have chosen and and declared that we

  459. want the God to be Lord of our life. Now

  460. it's our responsibility

  461. to keep that fire burning.

  462. You know, so often when I've read the

  463. passage

  464. uh in Thessalonians

  465. that says, "Do not quench the Holy

  466. Spirit." I've focused on the thought

  467. that I must not do anything to pour

  468. water

  469. on the fire by committing sins and doing

  470. things wrong.

  471. But as I've understood that it's related

  472. to this verse in Leviticus and that I

  473. have a responsibility to keep the fire

  474. of the Holy Spirit in my life burning,

  475. I've come to understand that the biggest

  476. threat to that fire in my life is not

  477. the sin in my life. It's actually

  478. inattention.

  479. We go trying to work on getting rid of

  480. sin in our life so much as we can

  481. that we forget to actually go to the

  482. Holy Spirit to help us with it.

  483. Or we get distracted by everything

  484. that's going on in our world and then

  485. all of a sudden we find things going on

  486. in our life and things going wrong and

  487. things going difficult.

  488. It's because we've failed to pay

  489. attention

  490. to the fire that is within us.

  491. We've gotten distracted by the things

  492. around us. We've gotten distracted

  493. distracted by the size of our bills.

  494. We've gotten distracted by that habit

  495. that doesn't seem to want to break, that

  496. we can't get loose of. And so we get

  497. trying to work on ways to get rid of

  498. that. And we fail

  499. to go to the one who can actually set us

  500. free from the habit by paying attention

  501. to the fire of the Holy Spirit within

  502. us.

  503. Are you hearing what I'm saying, church?

  504. When I'm not paying attention to the

  505. Holy Spirit in my life, that is when I'm

  506. more likely to fall into problems and

  507. traps and even sins that so easily

  508. entangle.

  509. Those things that would quench his

  510. influence on my life. That's why

  511. Galatians 5 is so important. When we

  512. walk with the spirit, when we walk by

  513. the spirit, when we make this walking

  514. with God our first and most important

  515. priority, as Emily shared last week,

  516. that's what sets us free

  517. from things that hold us in bondage.

  518. God will lead us to where we need to go.

  519. God will guide us to those things that

  520. need to be dealt with. But we must pay

  521. attention to this fire that is within

  522. us.

  523. We must not we must do everything we can

  524. to not let it go out.

  525. So you may ask, well, so how do I pay

  526. attention? I want to share with you just

  527. two very simple things in closing. And I

  528. in in a little while when I preach

  529. again, I'll I'll go into them a bit more

  530. deeply. But I just want to leave it at

  531. this space right now. Introduce them to

  532. them to you because it's something that

  533. I learned when I was very young as a

  534. Christian. And the the reason I learned

  535. it was because of the house I lived in

  536. and the example my mom showed me as she

  537. raised us as kids. But the first thing

  538. that is absolutely critical is prayer.

  539. Your prayer life is vital.

  540. And now, and as I said earlier, this is

  541. not about

  542. words. I've shared this before and I'll

  543. share it again. The most common word for

  544. prayer in the New Testament is pro. The

  545. Greek word prose. It is actually the

  546. same word that is used for this passage

  547. where it says pray continuously.

  548. This is the word that it use. And the

  549. word simply means by definition a

  550. fervent desire to draw near as you would

  551. in an intimate relationship or a vowed

  552. relationship.

  553. We are in a vowed relationship with God.

  554. A covenant relationship it's called

  555. where he has paid the price for us to

  556. have a relationship with him.

  557. And this is the most critical aspect of

  558. this type of prayer is a fervent desire

  559. to draw near to God.

  560. This is the critical part. This this

  561. starts before any words are spoken. It's

  562. a an an understanding and a knowledge

  563. that everything I need to survive and

  564. live this life is found in God. So my

  565. desire is to include him in everything I

  566. do in my life.

  567. This is the type of prayer I'm talking

  568. about.

  569. It's not bringing your shopping list of

  570. what I need today. It's God, I'm

  571. starting today. I'm getting out of bed

  572. and I cannot get out of bed unless I

  573. know you're with me.

  574. >> You're with me. I know you're with me.

  575. You're in me. Help me be aware of you in

  576. everything I do. Help me be watchful of

  577. you. Help lead me to where I should go

  578. and don't lead me anywhere I shouldn't

  579. go. My life is in your hands.

  580. That's how we pay attention to the fire

  581. that's in us. That's how we stop it

  582. going out. Being watchful to see and

  583. conscious of what God is doing. And the

  584. second part is simply to obey what he is

  585. asking us to do. Prayer and obedience.

  586. Prayer and obedience. You know, one of

  587. the other roles I said earlier, one of

  588. the roles of the Holy Spirit is to equip

  589. us and enable us, empower us to do

  590. the Christian life. And the Bible, I'll

  591. talk about this more later, but the

  592. Bible teaches us that he gives gifts,

  593. the gifts of the spirit. It's what Linda

  594. did this morning. She gave a gift, a a

  595. word of encouragement to us to to seek

  596. God, to see healing in our lives.

  597. And this is the thing that in the Holy

  598. Spirit, he has all these things that he

  599. wants to impart to us and give to us.

  600. But if we're not putting ourselves in a

  601. position where we can

  602. receive them, then we'll never know the

  603. benefit of those.

  604. But the the incredible thing, great

  605. example, Linda this morning coming up to

  606. share that that would have taken a lot

  607. of guts and bravery to do that. But it

  608. ultimately she knew she needed to be

  609. obedient to what God was showing her.

  610. And that's that's one example. But

  611. that's that's our example in life. So

  612. tomorrow when you get up and go to work,

  613. you say, "Holy Spirit, I put my life in

  614. your hands. I lead I I know you are

  615. within me and you lead me and guide me.

  616. Help me to w be watchful and knowing

  617. what you want me to do."

  618. And then your boss gives you a hard time

  619. at work, then the challenge is how do I

  620. respond?

  621. Do I get angry? Do I get mad? Maybe.

  622. Maybe you do. But at the end of the day,

  623. you go, well, God talks to us in the

  624. Bible about the fact that we are to obey

  625. our bosses and to live at peace with

  626. them and and to do what they ask us to

  627. do. So, I will do as long as it's

  628. nothing contrary to God, I would do what

  629. they're asking me to do with a a good

  630. heart.

  631. Sure, they might have said it to me in

  632. the wrong way, but I'll still choose to

  633. honor God by the way I respond. That's

  634. obedience.

  635. This is the obedience that Jesus

  636. demonstrated to us when he walked this

  637. earth. He said, "I will do nothing other

  638. than what I see the father doing."

  639. And this is our challenge, church. I'll

  640. finish

  641. with this passage which says it really

  642. well in Ephesians 4:30. And do not bring

    Ephesians 4:30

  643. sorrow to God's Holy Spirit by the way

  644. you live. Remember, he has identified

  645. you as his own. Guarantee you will be

  646. saved on the day of redemption.

  647. So is what did I say earlier? The Holy

  648. Spirit is a person.

  649. So guess what? We can bring sorrow to

  650. the Holy Spirit. Another translation

  651. says, "Do not grieve the Holy Spirit.

  652. He has feelings."

  653. And so do not bring sorrow to the Holy

  654. Spirit by the way you live. And then

  655. further on it says, "Get rid of all

  656. bitterness, rage, anger, harsh words,

  657. and slander, as well as all types of

  658. evil behavior. Instead, be kind to each

  659. other, tender-hearted, forgiving one

  660. another, just as God through Christ has

  661. forgiven you."

  662. Very simple illustration of obedience.

  663. What's our

  664. our act of obedience?

  665. Steer clear of rage. Steer clear of

  666. anger. Steer clear of harsh words. Steer

  667. clear of slander as well as any kind of

  668. evil behavior. This is this is but

  669. remember you'll never be able to do that

  670. without the Holy Spirit's help. So how

  671. do you get the Holy Spirit's help? By

  672. keeping the fire burning

  673. by being conscious of him. Prayer and

  674. obedience.

  675. Prayer. So when you pray and you draw

  676. near to him, he's going to lead you and

  677. guide you. There's going to be things

  678. that come across your path that you then

  679. need to choose to obey.

  680. This is our challenge for the year,

  681. church, and beyond that. But we have the

  682. Holy Spirit in us. So, let's be aware of

  683. him by drawing near to him, by paying

  684. attention to him. And then when he

  685. guides us and leads us, let's be

  686. obedient to all that he asks of us. And

  687. that's in the things that he asks us to

  688. do, but also in the things that he asks

  689. us not to do. This is our challenge.

  690. Let's pay attention to the fire that God

  691. has given us. Let's keep it burning.

  692. Let's do all that it takes to keep it

  693. burning.

  694. I want to share with you just in closing

  695. the scripture that God gave me this week

  696. to confirm that I should preach this

  697. message. And it's actually in the Old

  698. Testament.

  699. It's not in the New Testament. It's in

  700. the Old Testament. So it's that idea

  701. that God was speaking long before

  702. he came to become one of us and to be a

  703. part of us. Long before he saved us and

  704. redeemed us, he was speaking into this

  705. space to let us know this is what my

  706. plan is for you.

  707. And we're going to close with this in

  708. Psalm 143:10. David,

    Psalms 143:10

  709. David,

  710. King David, someone who was well aware

  711. of the lack of his humanness and to what

  712. happens when you don't pay attention to

  713. the fire. We know the story of King

  714. David that when he was not paying

  715. attention to the fire, when he should

  716. have been out on the battlefield, he was

  717. home, he fell into sin, committed

  718. adultery. that then led to murder.

  719. So he knows full well what happens when

  720. you don't pay attention to that fire. He

  721. wrote these words. Teach me to do your

  722. will for you are my God.

  723. First step, God, you are God. I am your

  724. creation.

  725. I am your child. Teach me your ways.

  726. And then he says these words, "May your

  727. gracious spirit lead me forward on firm

  728. footing."

  729. Let's close our eyes

  730. for a moment and just reflect on what

  731. that's saying.

  732. Think about what it's saying to you.

  733. Teach me to do your will, for you are my

  734. God. This morning, right now, may be an

  735. opportunity for you to declare in your

  736. prayer right now to declare, "God, I put

  737. you back on the throne of my life. I've

  738. let things distract me and get caught up

  739. in stuff that's going on in my life, and

  740. I've forgotten that you've given me your

  741. Holy Spirit. I've forgotten that you are

  742. God, and I am your creation. So I I

  743. acknowledge you again aresh that you are

  744. God of my life.

  745. And then the second prayer is our

  746. invitation to him.

  747. May your gracious spirit lead me forward

  748. on firm footing.

  749. So right now it may be your opportunity

  750. to say, "Holy Spirit, lead me.

  751. Lead me where you want me to go. Help

  752. me find firm ground.

  753. I know I can't do it in my own strength.

  754. I need your help. So I ask you for help

  755. right now. So right now in this place,

  756. just ask him. Ask him to lead you.

  757. Commit to walking with him.

  758. This is our prayer this morning, Lord. A

  759. reminder

  760. to not quench the spirit in our lives

  761. by inattention.

  762. But God, we put our full attention on

  763. you now and commit to keep our eyes

  764. fixed on you.

  765. to pray continuously by always desiring

  766. and wanting your will in our lives, not

  767. our own.

  768. Holy Spirit, come and renew the fire

  769. within each of us.

  770. Rekindle the flame.

  771. Let your wind

  772. blow on it and cause it to rise up like

  773. never before in our lives.

  774. in Jesus name. Amen.
