  1. Good morning church. Good to be here.

  2. I'm here today to talk about light.

  3. And I was doing some research. I was

  4. looking at things. I found definitions.

  5. There's a few engineers in here. I found

  6. definitions about waves and all those

  7. sort of things. But I'm like, "No, I'm

  8. not about that. I'm a simple man."

  9. But what I want to bring to your

  10. attention today, I wonder, as you can

  11. see, I've dimmed the lights.

  12. But

  13. light is such a simple thing. I flick

  14. the switch

  15. and light comes on. It changes the room.

  16. It changes the atmosphere.

  17. It changes

  18. how we see things. Let's pray.

  19. Lord, I thank you for this time. I thank

  20. you for this place and for bringing

  21. everyone together today. I just pray

  22. that as we look at your word,

  23. you teach us and you guide us and you be

  24. with us in Jesus name. Amen.

  25. So yeah, you walk into a dark room and

  26. you flick a switch and all of a sudden

  27. everything changes. What once was dark

  28. is now light.

  29. The darkness doesn't fight back.

  30. It just disappears.

  31. Gone.

  32. It doesn't fight back. It just

  33. disappears when we turn the light on. I

  34. read something recently that made me

  35. stop and think. Actually, it was on a

  36. kid's website. I I looked up I want to

  37. know just basics. So, I looked up kids

  38. science light was my Google search and I

  39. found some things and it said this

  40. thing. It said darkness is the absent of

  41. light. Absence of light. You can't

  42. actually create darkness.

  43. To make somewhere dark, you simply stop

  44. the light from coming in.

  45. Darkness is the absence of light. You

  46. can't actually create darkness. To make

  47. somewhere dark, you simply stop the

  48. light from coming in. So, I was looking

  49. at this before.

  50. I can see the light trying to come in

  51. here. But if I was to do this, the light

  52. would come in.

  53. But we're stopping the light from coming

  54. in.

  55. Darkness.

  56. Anyway, that's a side point.

  57. But even a small light can change a dark

  58. room.

  59. This light's from my bedroom. I use it

  60. all the time and it lights the room. But

  61. I wonder if I can give you this quote if

  62. my clicker thing works.

  63. Yes, I can.

  64. Martin Luther King once said something

  65. that captured this idea really well. He

  66. said, "Darkness cannot drive out

  67. darkness.

  68. Only light can do that. Hate cannot

  69. drive out hate. Only love can do that."

  70. And when you think about it, that's

  71. exactly how light works.

  72. You don't fight darkness, you simply

  73. introduce light.

  74. And Jesus once said something and it's

  75. what we're focusing on for the next

  76. little while. The I am series. He says,

  77. "I am the light of the world.

  78. Whoever follows me will never walk in

  79. darkness, but will have the light of

  80. life." The message translation says it

  81. this way.

  82. I am Jesus. I am the world's light.

  83. No one who follows me stumbles around in

  84. the darkness. I've provided plenty of

  85. light to live in.

  86. And as I looked up this passage,

  87. I knew I was preaching on I am the light

  88. of the world. So I went to John 8

  89. and I looked and I found the verse, John

    John 8:12

  90. 8:12. But something caught my eye as I

  91. went to that verse and found it.

  92. I found the context of it. And like

  93. Pastor Ben preached on last week about

  94. the bread of life. I am the bread of

  95. life. I am the bread of life comes after

  96. the feeding of the 5000.

  97. And when I found the verse, I am the

  98. light of the world.

  99. What precedes it? What comes before it

  100. is the woman caught in adultery.

  101. And I was like, I'd never noticed that

  102. before.

  103. I think we've all read them in separate

  104. context. We've read, "I am the light of

  105. the world.

  106. No one who follows me stumbles around in

  107. darkness. I provide plenty of light to

  108. live in." But I'd never noticed that the

  109. very preceding story was this story.

  110. And it comes straight after the woman

  111. caught in ad idolatry.

  112. And when we think about I'm the light of

  113. the world, we often imagine that just as

  114. a single teaching moment.

  115. But it actually

  116. is a moment where Jesus shows mercy to

  117. someone.

  118. You see, the the the crowd had brought

  119. uh the woman before Jesus.

  120. She'd been dragged into the middle of

  121. the crowd. She was caught in sin. You

  122. know, many people believe that she was

  123. they just dragged her straight from the

  124. very act of adultery.

  125. probably wrapped in some bed sheets,

  126. embarrassed,

  127. put in the middle of this crowd.

  128. Everyone was mocking her. And then if

  129. you read the story and you could read it

  130. later, the religious leaders are ready

  131. to condemn her and they place her in

  132. front of everyone and ask Jesus what

  133. should be done.

  134. But they weren't looking just for Jesus.

  135. They were trying to trap him. And Jesus

  136. bends down and begins riding in the

  137. dust. And then he stands up and says,

  138. "Let the one

  139. of you who is without sin be the first

  140. to throw a stone at her."

  141. That stuffs them up a little bit.

  142. This crowd that was once accusing and

  143. yelling and boisterous

  144. begin to walk away. One by one, the

  145. stones begin to drop. The people start

  146. to realize that they're judging her. And

  147. eventually it's just Jesus and the woman

  148. standing there. And Jesus looks at her

  149. and says,

  150. "Here we go." Jesus straightened up and

  151. asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has

  152. no one condemned you?" "No one, sir,"

  153. she said. "Then neither do I condemn

  154. you. Go now and leave your life of sin.

  155. I am the light of the world. Come

  156. straight after this.

  157. And I realized something. I realized

  158. that uh the first thing that Jesus does

  159. here when he's talking about light in

  160. John chapter 8 is he stops condemnation.

    John 8 chapter mention

  161. No, that's not the one I want. I thought

  162. I had one. He stops condemnation. The

  163. first thing the light of Jesus does is

  164. stop condemnation. The light of Jesus

  165. exposes sin, but it does not exist to

  166. destroy people.

  167. The crowd were there to destroy people.

  168. They were there to destroy a reputation.

  169. They were there to to give

  170. he found it. They were there to give um

  171. accusation to say you're worse than me.

  172. And then the crowd suddenly realized

  173. that no, they're not worse than her.

  174. And that's why they kept dropping stones

  175. because it was who has no sin can you

  176. know drop the first stone.

  177. So one by one the sins they dropped

  178. the light of Jesus exposes sin but it

  179. does not exist to destroy people. It

  180. exists to save them. When Jesus said

  181. these words people listening you got to

  182. remember again where this happens. So

  183. this happens in the temple courts. It

  184. happens at a time of celebration.

  185. It happened

  186. when the festival of tab tabernacles was

  187. on. So that was they what they do in the

  188. festival they would light light these

  189. large lamps in the in the in the

  190. festival grounds in the grounds of the

  191. of the of the place of the temple.

  192. And this was to remind the people of God

  193. that God led Israel through the

  194. wilderness with light.

  195. So there's examples of that all around.

  196. This is God. What God did in Israel.

  197. This is what God did for you in the

  198. past. This is what God did for you.

  199. The God of the Old Testament. This is

  200. what the God of the Old Testament did

  201. for you. But here Jesus is saying, "I am

  202. the light."

  203. Now in form of a human.

  204. He wasn't just pointing towards the

  205. light. He is saying, "I am the light. I

  206. am the light." That was that verse

  207. there.

  208. There's a verse in Exodus that

  209. highlights that around

  210. God leading them out of Israel, uh,

  211. Egypt. By night, the Lord went ahead of

  212. them in a pillar of fire to give them

  213. light.

  214. So, talked about that.

  215. We'll get to this bit.

  216. Always when I think of light in the

  217. context of Jesus,

  218. I think about lighouses. It's just what

  219. I do. Often when I go and write my

  220. messages,

  221. I park in that car park near the

  222. Birkenhead Tavern near the bridges. I

  223. slide in there, park under one of the

  224. big trees, and I have the the port in

  225. front of me. And so as I'm writing this,

  226. the lighthouse is there. And and I love

  227. the image of lighouses. I grew up in the

  228. Salvos and and the Salvos have a an

  229. image in lots of their centers that is a

  230. lighthouse and has people swimming in

  231. the ocean and and the lighthouse is the

  232. place of safety.

  233. So ships navigate dangerous waters and

  234. they look for the lighthouse. They look

  235. for that beacon of light.

  236. But it's not the building or the the

  237. structure

  238. that is the thing that creates light.

  239. Inside the power, there's a lamp. But

  240. this lamp isn't as effective unless it

  241. has mirrors around it.

  242. Because the mirrors are the things that

  243. guide that light out. They're the things

  244. that point that light out to the to the

  245. ocean.

  246. The lighthouse simply reflects the light

  247. it receives.

  248. How do we fit in that? The lighthouse

  249. simply reflects the light it receives.

  250. And the mirrors need to stay clean.

  251. If they become dirty or clouded, the

  252. light is still there, but it doesn't

  253. shine as clearly. And sometimes our

  254. lives can be like that. We reflect the

  255. light we stay close to.

  256. Jesus says, "You are the light of the

  257. world." In Matthew 5:14.

    Matthew 5:14

  258. And this is the story where it says they

  259. put a lamp on a stand and they covered

  260. it. You know, we're called to be the

  261. light of the world. We're called to be

  262. light in this world.

  263. I was lying there the other morning.

  264. I'd got up to pray and I still had some

  265. time and I was tired. So, I'm like, I'm

  266. going back to bed. So, I went back to

  267. bed and the Holy Spirit didn't let me

  268. rest cuz I was in prep mode. So he gave

  269. me a thing and he goes,

  270. "Glow-in-the-dark stickers."

  271. So I'm lying there. You imagine I'm

  272. lying there trying to sleep, trying to

  273. rest. And he goes, "Glow-in-the-dark

  274. stickers?" I'm like, "What the heck are

  275. you mean by glow-in-the-dark dark

  276. stickers, God? I have no idea what

  277. you're talking about." But then it

  278. became clear to me.

  279. I remember as a as a dad of two kids,

  280. the glow-in-the-dark stickers in the

  281. shop and and they want one and they're

  282. two bucks in office work, so I just

  283. bought lots of them, but that's a trick.

  284. Um

  285. the little moons and stars you stick on

  286. the ceiling. I think Samuel's still got

  287. some. He's 15, but they're still on the

  288. ceiling cuz cuz you don't take them down

  289. once they're stuck there. They're there

  290. for for life, right? They're just stuck

  291. there. I'm not getting back up there to

  292. fix them.

  293. and and often they don't work straight

  294. away. They you get them and they're

  295. like, "Why is this thing not glowing?

  296. It's meant to glow." They think it's

  297. going to glow. Especially these are the

  298. nice bright yellow ones, but those white

  299. ones that don't look like they're

  300. functioning or doing anything.

  301. They're not glowing. And in the shop,

  302. you they're you think they're going to

  303. do everything, but once you get them

  304. home and stick them on the roof,

  305. nothing. Absolutely nothing.

  306. And the reason is simple.

  307. It's because this doesn't produce light

  308. by itself.

  309. Glow-in-the-dark stickers don't produce

  310. light themselves.

  311. They absorb light and then reflect it

  312. when it gets dark.

  313. They absorb light and then reflect it

  314. when they get dark. So they need

  315. exposure to light.

  316. They need time under the light.

  317. How many times have you stood there as a

  318. parent?

  319. I've got one here. Yeah. How many times

  320. you stood there as a parent held it

  321. really, really, really close to the

  322. light and you're getting blinded because

  323. you're trying to hold it here and I can

  324. already see I'm going to get dots if I

  325. close my eyes. But how many times you

  326. holding it here so it glows for your

  327. kid?

  328. They absorb the light and reflect it

  329. when things get dark. They need exposure

  330. to light. They need to be close to the

  331. light and if they don't re receive

  332. enough light, so once we stick them on

  333. the roof, you'd think the theory was

  334. that daylight is going to do it. But

  335. daylight doesn't cut it.

  336. But those ones that are stuck on the

  337. roof and aren't glowing haven't stopped

  338. being what they were made to be.

  339. They just aren't fully charged.

  340. They glow best when they spend time in

  341. the light.

  342. What have I got up here? They glow best

  343. when they spend time in the light.

  344. Sometimes

  345. I know my life can feel like that. I

  346. know I had someone who I'm close to in

  347. this church recently.

  348. I was tired and I was serving and I've

  349. been doing stuff and someone said to me,

  350. just gave me a little said, Matt, how

  351. much time you spending with God? And I

  352. went, "Thank you for that. I will

  353. receive that and I will ponder that and

  354. I will see how I go this week."

  355. Sometimes our faith can feel like that.

  356. We're still around the light, but we're

  357. not always giving Jesus the attention

  358. our hearts need.

  359. Life gets busy kind of faith. We just

  360. live it. Yeah, we believe in Jesus and

  361. it drops into the background. But

  362. following Jesus doesn't happen by

  363. accident.

  364. And it wouldn't be a preach in the port

  365. church without a Eugene Peterson quote.

  366. So I found one.

  367. Wait. But yeah, this is the point that

  368. our faith journey, if we just fumble

  369. around and stumble around and keep going

  370. through the motions, we're not going to

  371. glow. We're not going to be close enough

  372. to the source. So we have to be

  373. intentional.

  374. It doesn't happen by accident.

  375. And here we are.

  376. Disciplehip is a long obedience in the

  377. same direction.

  378. That just means that we have to maintain

  379. the course.

  380. That we have to continue even when we

  381. don't feel like it. that when our

  382. sticker feels like it's getting old and

  383. crusty on the roof and it hasn't

  384. received any light, we don't just ignore

  385. it. We understand it's part of a

  386. journey. That staying close to the light

  387. is something we have to choose again and

  388. again and again and again.

  389. Cuz light in our lives is intentional.

  390. It is. It's intentional.

  391. Now, Pastor Ben last week gave out some

  392. worksheets. He called them homework,

  393. which grated against me

  394. cuz I don't like homework. Never have,

  395. never will. So, when he said it was

  396. homework, eh, now I've got worksheets. I

  397. got things today. I don't know what I'm

  398. I'm giving you stuff later on. We'll do

  399. it. Don't worry, my helpers. I'm not

  400. there yet. Don't freak out. But

  401. everyone's going to receive

  402. uh a guide and it's going to have one of

  403. these stickers on it, one of these

  404. little glow-in-the-dark.

  405. And I I would love for you to take that

  406. home with you today

  407. and place that sticker somewhere you're

  408. going to see it every day.

  409. So, chuck it on your fridge, put it in

  410. your car, stick it on your phone cover,

  411. um put it on your mirror, stick it

  412. beside your bed, wherever you want to

  413. do, do it. do at the back of the toilet

  414. door. You could just one singular

  415. sticker on the toilet door. Yeah.

  416. Perfect.

  417. And every time you remember, you see it,

  418. you remember these things. Stay close to

  419. the light, recharge daily, and reflect

  420. Jesus.

  421. Now, on that on that handout, you've got

  422. some guides around that. you've got some

  423. some thinking around that as a

  424. reflection

  425. because Jesus said, "I am the light of

  426. the world." And our job is not to create

  427. the light. Our job is to stay close to

  428. him.

  429. Because when we stay close to the

  430. source,

  431. his light begins to shine through us,

  432. into our homes, into our friendship,

  433. into our community.

  434. And people navigating the darkness of

  435. light will see something different in

  436. us. They'll see us reflecting Jesus.

  437. But it's not us. It's not our light.

  438. It's Jesus light. Because Jesus says, "I

  439. am the light." So it's a light that's

  440. not ours,

  441. but it's his.

  442. Why don't we just take a moment right

  443. now

  444. just to ponder that thought

  445. just to ponder

  446. the sticker,

  447. the need for recharge,

  448. the need for recharge so that we can

  449. reflect Jesus in our community.

  450. perhaps take a moment to

  451. do a

  452. a check on ourselves.

  453. Have we just been going through the

  454. motions?

  455. Have we just been rocking up to church

  456. on a Sunday?

  457. Have we just been

  458. living in this chaotic world which it is

  459. right now?

  460. and forgetting

  461. about the light that guides us,

  462. about the beacon on the hill.

  463. Have we forgotten that

  464. amongst the crashing waves of the ocean

  465. and the chaos of the storms?

  466. If only we'd look up.

  467. If we're only we'd lift our eyes from

  468. our troubles and see the lighthouse on

  469. the hill.

  470. Wait for it. It's coming. The light is

  471. coming.

  472. Sometimes it might blink,

  473. but the hope of the light is there.

  474. Why don't you ask for God's light to be

  475. more evident in your life?

  476. And maybe

  477. and a little dirty

  478. or a little clouded.

  479. We haven't paid attention to that.

  480. Lord, give us strategies to

  481. shine Jesus into our world,

  482. into our communities, into where you

  483. place us. Help us, Lord, to shine your

  484. light.

  485. Recharge us, I pray.

  486. Amen.
