A reading from the Acts of the Apostles.

In the first book, Theophilus, I dealt with all that Jesus did and taught until the day he was taken up after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen.

He presented himself alive to them by many proofs after he had suffered

appearing to them during 40 days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

While meeting with them, he enjoined them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father about which you have heard me speak.

For John baptized with water,

but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.

When they had gathered together, they asked him, Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?

He answered them, it is not for you to know the times or seasons that the father has established by his own authority.

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.

And you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem throughout Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth.

When he had said this, as they were looking on, he was lifted up and a cloud took him from their sight.

While they were looking intently at the sky as he was going, suddenly two men dressed in white garments stood beside them.

They said, Men of Galilee, why are you standing there looking at the sky?

This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.

Since through the blood of Jesus, we have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary by the new and living way he opened for us through the veil, that is, his flesh.

You are witnesses of these things, and behold, I am sending the promise of my father upon you, but stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.

Then he led them out as far as Bethany, raised his hands, and blessed them.

As he blessed them, he parted from them and was taken up to heaven.

They did him homage, and then returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

And they were continually in the temple praising God.

Of course, today we are celebrating the solemnity of the ascension of the Lord, also beginning the March, the month of June, which is a month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a great devotion that has brought so many people to greater appreciation of the gift of Jesus' heart.

a human heart, especially in the Eucharist, our connection, human connection with God, the only God, who decided to become men.

Because in the history of the world, we've had many men who thought they were gods, who thought they would become gods, but there is only one true God who became men.

So as we come to this ascension, it's always good to explain the ascension because it's not one of those self-explanatory feasts.

You know, yesterday at 10 a.m., there was a mass of the ordination to the diaconate for the Diocese of Savannah.

Three young men were ordained deacons, and next year they will be ordained priests, God's willing.

And so as I was sitting there, I was sitting on this side of the sanctuary looking this way.

So on this side was this beautiful stained glass window of the ascension.

And I thought to myself, this is great because I have to preach about it, so I'll just look at it the whole time and come up with the homily.

And so as I was looking at it, I thought it was very human.

because, you know, just the portrayer of the relationship between Jesus and his father.

But before that, on the other side of the cathedral is the assumption.

And the assumption, of course, is of the Blessed Virgin Mary, who is piously praying.

And then on the top of the window is Jesus, her son, God, Jesus Christ, with a beautiful crown holding it in front of him for our lady to be assumed into heaven, and then he will place that beautiful crown on her head.

And you know, she will be crowned the queen of heaven and earth as we pray in the mystery of the rosary.

but on this side we have got the father on top of the stained glass window and he's he's reaching out like this with this great joy depicted on his face reaching out to his son who is ascending like this to his father and like as if the father wanted to reach and couldn't wait for the son to end up in his arms and i think you know if you have memories like that with your father

That's, you know, one of those most consoling, safe places, we would say, and you should cherish them.

Because of course, there will be your moments of security subconsciously without you even knowing.

But finally, at last, Jesus is going to the Father, right?

He said that to Mary Magdalene, don't touch me because I have not yet ascended to the Father, but now he's actually going back.

And of course, that reminds us.

of our destiny.

If we only want to stay close to Jesus, like as if grab, you know, his hands and go with him, we have that opportunity every single time.

We are at Mass, which is the preparation for us to enter into heaven one day.

And so heaven is our destiny and the welcoming father, right?

He's our spiritual father.

Now I was on the way back talking to my mother on the phone.

yesterday, and she was having not the best day, even though the weather was nice, you know, in Poland too, and yesterday it was nice, but she was just having one of those days.

And it was so bad in a sense that she would say, like, she mentioned something about dying or death, you know, like as if death was going to be deliberation.

And so when she said it, I was just like, I don't know what to say, right?

Everybody expects the son priest, right, to...

know what to say, know how to comfort.

But in moments like this, you don't know, like, should I say something?

Is this a trap?

Like, she's going to, like, lure me in.

And so, but then I was driving, so I just said, something about heaven.

And she goes, oh, you want me dead?

And.

So this is a warning for you, you know, you're trying to comfort your parents.

Don't talk about heaven, right?

Because they'll think that you're trying to get rid of them and, you know, take possession of their possessions.

Like, so I was lured into the trap and I, of course, as a good son, trying to comfort my mother, got what I deserve, by the way.

So this is what you deserve.

But anyways, I do believe it.

I do believe the fact that here is not heaven.

I keep saying it to people when they are usually surprised with like experiencing evil, experiencing this, experiencing that this is not heaven.

This was never meant to be perfect.

It will never be perfect.

And when I was saying it to my mother, I really hope and I really pray that one day she will be in heaven and experience this, there is no more void, there is no more sadness, there is no more bad days, there's no more illness, there's no more missing somebody, longing.

None of it.

We are complete.

We are fulfilled.

We are in joy with God.

And that's what it says today.

It says that the apostles...

When Jesus was ascending and blessing them, they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.

Why?

Well, because they saw something that gave them so much security and joy, no matter what's going to happen to them, and we know what happened to them.

They were murdered.

They were killed.

But in a way, they were showing, we don't care.

You want to kill me?

Kill me.

Because they saw the reality of heaven.

They know they're going to leave this world, and that's why they went and continually...

prayed in the temple continually.

And so we are invited to this reality of heaven where there is no imperfection.

You know, I think to children, we sometimes have to explain, like, this world is not perfect, right?

It's not a cartoon.

Or to young couples, right, very young ones who are like in so fascinated with each other, they just, you know how they are.

And they just, you know, cannot comprehend that like marriage is not going to be perfect, you know.

And so we sometimes the priest will tell them, like, it's not going to be perfect.

Like, what do you mean?

So you can ask those who have been married for a few months, they'll tell you.

But that's how it's meant to be.

You know, even for the richest people on the face of the earth, right?

They can have all these billions of dollars and build a nice racket that costs billions of dollars and then the rocket explodes after a few seconds in the air.

And like, that's a bad day, right?

The same with all of us.

And that's how it's going to be.

But Jesus ascended into heaven not to abandon us.

And that's the key.

We don't believe in God who abandons us.

We don't believe like those Greek gods that were playing with people, like laughing at them and they didn't exist, but one who leaves us, but leaves himself with us under the species of the body and blood, on the Eucharist.

And not only himself, he leaves to us the sacred heart.

We call the sacred heart of Jesus.

His most intense, loving presence, the heart of Jesus, which is of course crowned with thorns, which is bleeding for the humanity, but it's the best give God could ever give us.

And we have it in every single celebration of the Eucharist.

And when Saint Margaret Mary Alacocque, who had the apparitions of Jesus of the Sacred Heart,

She said that Jesus appeared to her in an ascended Lord as the ascended Lord, the glorified one, and he was profoundly human and he was intimately close to her.

That's what we want to cherish in the gift of the Eucharist.

And in our faith, as Catholics, we are the only Christians on the face of the earth that have it.

We should cherish it.

This is what Jesus said to her.

Behold this heart which has loved so loved man that has spared nothing even to exhausting and consuming itself to testify to them its love.

And in return, I receive from the greater number of them nothing but in gratitude.

We don't want to be the greater number of them.

We want to be the minority that offers Jesus attention and offers Jesus comfort.

And how do we offer him attention and comfort?

By ordering our lives to the Eucharist, by ordering our lives so that when we receive Jesus, our hearts are prepared.

They are on fire with love and they are not stained by mortal sin.

Because if we came to receive him in a state of moral sin, he could say to us, how could you do this to me?

How could you do this to me?

Just like someone you loved the most and you cross them, betrayal, whatever, they would say to you, how could you do this to me?

Like I gave you my heart, I gave you everything, raise your children, all of that.

The same with Jesus.

He gave us literally everything.

That's why we have to order our lives, ordering our lives towards the Eucharist, meaning that I have to live in such a way that I can receive him in a state of grace.

I have to do everything in my possible way that I can receive him.

And if I cannot, I don't.

Because he is...

good to me because he's God and that's what he wants.

And so that's the beautiful paradox that God leaves, but he stays in the gift of the Eucharist.

He sends us the Holy Spirit.

He overshadows us with the Holy Spirit.

He heals us in this.

And so the ascension challenges us to live as people who are rooted in heaven.

And that's what I was trying to help my mother with understanding.

Like, I know it's not a perfect day.

But one day in heaven, you know, when we all meet there, it's going to be.

We hope.

You guys, we may, you want to be in heaven, I presume, and you have people who you're like, don't like and can't stand.

And you just cannot imagine them being in heaven, but just imagine.

They're going to be completely different.

They're going to be wholesome and beautiful and in a way that you never imagined they could be.

They will be the best versions of themselves and more.

And that's what I wish for my mother.

That's what I was trying to come across to communicate, but I didn't, couldn't do it really effectively in this traffic, you know.

But that's what I wish.

and also for myself.

And that's what Jesus is inviting us so that the Father is welcoming us just like Him.

And so in this month of Sacred Heart, we will expose the Blessed Sacrament at the end of Mass for a few minutes to sing the litany of the Sacred Heart so that you can offer all of your intentions to the open heart of Jesus, this one Sunday of the month.

The heart that is burning with mercy.

and peers for our sins.

When he says to us continuously at every single mass, come to me all of you who are burdened and I will restore you.

The Eucharist is the enduring gift of the ascended Lord.

Away he fulfills his promise.

I am with you always till the end of time.

St.

John Paul II put it beautifully.

He said this, in the Eucharist.

The heart of Jesus continues to beat with love for humanity.

So in every Holy Communion, we don't just touch heaven.

Heaven touches us.

I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, the maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father, through Him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary and became men.

For our sake, he was crucified under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living and a dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, a giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, where the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins, and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.

With confidence, let us bring our needs before the Father.

For our Holy Father and his leadership as head of Christ's body on earth, may the Holy Spirit grant him counsel and wisdom.
