Highlights: Nehemiah - Week 1

Hey man, We're starting a brand new, brand new series today on the

Book of Nehemiah. We're gonna kind of go through the Book of Nehemiah,

and we we did this last year. We called it the Highlight Series.

We looked at the Book of Psalms. Of course me and is a little

shorter than Psalms. But but we're gonna really just bear down and focus in

on personal leadership over these next four weeks because I believe that if I can

learn to lead me better, then I can lead my family better. If

I can lead me better, I can I can be a better employee or

employer. If I can lead me better, I can lead my team better.

I can volunteer better, I can serve better. I can do all

of those things better if I can learn to lead me better. So we're

gonna look at the Book of Nehemiah and maybe a little bit different kind of

thing that I normally preach, maybe a little more practicality to some of it.

Not that I don't I try to be practical all of time, but

uh, I just I don't want you to uh to miss one of these

weeks. I believe it's going to be a very important series that will impact

your life in a very deep way if you'll grab these principles and put them

to work in your life. So if you're on vacation this month, listen,

go back and watch it online. I don't get paid extra if you

go back and watch it online. I just want you to get this this

material into your spirit because I believe it has the potential to take you from

one level to another level. The Bible says transform from glory to glory to

glory, and I believe that is that should be our goal. Niam I

chapter one, starting in verse one, Niami chapter one, starting in verse

one. Listen, if you if you've got a regular paper Bible and you

don't know where NIAMI is, just use the index. It's okay, you

don't have to be super spiritual. Just look it up in the end and

go there. Amen. Amen, use the tools God created indexes so we

could find those small books of the Bible. Amen. Amen. Me and

my chapter one, verse one, the words of Nehemiah, the son of

Kaliah, close as I can get. It came to pass in the month

of Chislof in the twentieth year, as I was in a shoeshon the citadel

that Behinah. And I, one of my brethren, came with men from

Judah, and as I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who

had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem, and they said to me,

the survivors who were left from the captivity and the province are there in great

distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its

gates are burned with fire. So it was when I heard these words that

I sat down and wept and mourned. For many days. I was fasting

and praying before the God of Heaven. Father, I thank you for your

word. It's our only change agent. Lord. I pray today that these

words take root at the fabric of our being, or that you stir something

in us that's been dormant for a long time, that you call greatness out

of each and every one of us, and let us lock on purpose,

Lord, with a resolute focus that we've never had. Lord. I love

you, and I thank you in Jesus' name. Amen. Now, Nehemiah

is a figure. Neemiah was a Jew. He was serving in the court

of our dessert sees. He was serving there, and he was the cup

bearer to the king. That means he had a pretty good job. He

had great favor with the king, access to the king. Literally, the

king's life was in his hands, so he was greatly trusted by the king.

A cup bearer would literally taste the wine, taste the drink, taste

the food before the king ate it because their greatest fear was to be poisoned

by someone, because that was a way to execute an almost untraceable secret death.

So literally he had the king's life in his hands. He had a

job that most people and now I know that doesn't sound I'm gonna get poisoned,

but that very rarely happened. Amen. But the access he had and

the clout he had, it was a good job. It was like that

job at your work that you want, you know, that one where it

looks like they just sit in an office and don't do anything all day but

make a lot more money than you. Come on somebody. It was that

kind of job, and it seems like those are the kind of jobs that

make everybody right. And he thought he was happy up until the moment he

discovered purpose, up until the moment he discovered something that touched him. At

the very soul level of his being. And he heard these words that the

people were beginning to return from captivity. The walls of Jerusalem were broken down,

and the gates were burned with fire, and he began to weep.

And it says for days he went into mourning over the people and the situation

in Israel. He was vexed. He was captivated by this problem that was

happening. He had finally discovered his why for living. Most people go through

life without ever really discovering the why that births the purpose on the inside of

them. That why is the thing that motivates you. It shakes you.

It's what gets you up out of the bed every day. It's what makes

you go headlong into the fire trying to save just one person and pull one

person out. It's that thing that that is the driving force of all that

you do. And most people never find that. Most people simply go through

life surviving. We go through life and our goal is to make enough money

to stay alive and to have a few nice things. But purpose supersedes that.

Purpose is what makes that John chapter ten, verse ten life come into

being life and life more abundantly. And it doesn't matter what we have.

It's when we discover who we are. It's it's when we discover who we

are and what we what we were created for. And this moment happened in

Nea Mayah's life where he was shaken. You know, I when I watched

TV, there's this. They're old commercials, but they still show them,

so that means they work. Right, If it's an old commercial and they're

still showing it, it means it works. People are sending money. And

it's that one where they show the dogs locked in cages. Some of y'all

are shaking your head. Sally Struthers is like, you know, in the

background and she's saying, these animals and it's that soft violin kind of music

playing in the background and all the I don't know how they get those dogs

to frown. I mean, I don't know how, but it's like they're

the saddest looking dogs, and you know, and for only the for only

the price of a cup of coffee, you can make sure that these dogs

are adopted and well cared for. And listen, my family just they're like,

oh, we need to go to humane society. We needed I saw

a dog on the side of the road and I'm sitting there thinking, am

not bringing another animal home? That commercial doesn't stir me in the least.

I'm like, what in the world, why would why would anybody respond to

that? You know why? Because that is not even close to my purpose.

That's not something that I have compassion for, and my purpose is not

married to that thing at all. But some people, it is some people

that draws you that because somehow your purpose is connected somewhere in that particular area

or that vein of thinking, and it could be the Lord pulling you down

a road toward discovery so that you can find the thing you were created for.

For me, what really just tugs at my heartstrings is when I watch

people achieve great feats. Listen when somebody, when somebody wins in the Olympics

and they're not supposed to, when I cry like a baby when I when

I listen, I can watch documentaries of people that do great things. I

watch one on on Nikolai Tesla and all the things that he went through.

I cried because my purpose is to help people find purpose, and when people

are finding purpose, it moves me at the very fabric of who I am.

When people discover their purpose and it awakens something in me. It's why

I wake up every day and put my feet on the floor. It's so

that one more person can find purpose, because I believe purpose equals life.

And when we find our why for being, it changes everything. It changes

the way we think, it changes the way we are. Nia my chapter

two, verse one, it says, and it came to pass in the

month of Nissan, in the twentieth year of King art Dexerxees, when wine

was before him, that I took the wine and gave it to the king.

Now, I had never been sad in his presence before. Therefore,

the king said to me, why is your face sad? Since you're not

sick, This is nothing but sorrow of heart. Well, first of all,

I want you to understand. Art Xerxes was not a spiritual man,

pagan king, and he saw that there was something different. He saw that

that there was something that had shaken Nehemiah to his core. He took note

of it, and he asked about it. Because when you find your purpose,

everybody sees it. Everybody knows there's something different. Everybody sees a different

drive and attraction about what's happening on the inside of us. He says.

So I became dress fully afraid, and I said to the king, May

the king now, first of all, he showed some wisdom, right.

He didn't just say, man, I quit, I'm out of here.

He said, may the king live forever. Why should my face not be

sad when the city, the place of my father's tombs, lies waste and

its gates are burned with fire. Then the king said to me, what

do you request? He told him what was happening, and the King's response

to his why was what are you asking me for? He hadn't asked him

for anything. He told him about a situation, and the Lord moved on

art of Exerxy's heart to say, what what are you? What is it

exactly that that I'm asking for? Listen, where God gods, he provides,

Where God guides, there's always provision. God will give you kingdom connections.

He will put people in your path that are moved by the purpose and

the why in your life. And you're like, I don't believe that you

haven't found your why yet, because your why moves people. He said,

what do you? What do you request? So I prayed to the God

of Heaven, and I said to the king. If it pleases the king,

and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that

you send me to Judah, to the city of my father's tombs, that

I may rebuild it. Now, remember this, Namigh. His job is

to keep the king alive. He's asking the man for an extended vacation,

and he's going to have to replace the only person he trusts with somebody else.

But Neemiah asks him anyway, because purpose always demands action. Somebody needs

to tweet that purpose always demands action. If you're not motivated to action,

it's still not purpose. How long, then, the king said to me,

the queen also sitting beside him, how long will your journey be?

And when will you return? So it pleased the king to send me,

and I set him a time. He said. It pleased the king that

I would leave the only person that he trusts. It pleased for him to

go because he saw the purpose inside Neemiah and he wanted to be part of

that solution. If there were just three or four people that really grab hold

of purpose in this room right now, it wouldn't just change this church,

it would change our community. It would turn our community upside down. When

purpose is born, you do crazy things. You dream bigger than you could

ever imagine. You think about things that have never been thought about. You.

You have this resoluteness on the inside of you that causes you to achieve

things that nobody else even knows needs to be achieved. It causes you to

step out and become a full time missionary to help people position themselves in leadership

with human trafficking victims. Amen. It causes you, like Gary Dodson to

create a food bank that feeds hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of people every single

month. We're feeding six or seven hundred people every single month. And listen,

I didn't do a thing about it. All we did was build a

wall. But it was a vision born in a man years ago. That

was a passion that pulled him up out of the bed. Every single day.

Purpose moves things. You know, we often call purpose something else,

especially in the Pentecostal realm, and I want to talk about that because we

we have used this word and many times when we throw this word out,

it's like this mystical dust or something that we that's how we envision it.

When when it happened and we use this word, but I want you to.

I want you to look at Luke chapter four with me. These are

the words of Jesus Luke chapter four, verse eighteen. It says, the

spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me. I want

you to underline that in your Bible. The spirit of the Lord is upon

me because He has anointed me. How many of you have ever heard this

word used in church? Anointed boy, that was anointed preaching. Amen,

boy, the anointing was really in the room today. I want to just

I want to share something with you, whether you feel it or not,

the anointing is always in the room always. The Word of God is always

anointed because it shall not return void, but it shall accomplish that for which

it was sent, and it shall prosper in the task. That's its purpose.

Anointing equals purpose. When you step into your anointing, you step into

purpose. And the Bible says when you are anointed, the spirit of the

Lord is attracted to the anointing. We get the spirit of the Lord and

the anointing confused. Sometimes we think they're one and the same, But literally,

the anointing is the target that the spirit of the Lord is attracted to.

Once we get on purpose, the spirit of the Lord is attracted to

that anointing, and the spirit of the Lord gives us favor. The spirit

of the Lord opens doors, the spirit of the Lord creates miracles. The

spirit of the Lord gives us favor with people. The Spirit of the Lord

does those things. Because we discover our purpose, and we get about our

purpose, we find our why, the reason God created us to exist.

Jesus said, the spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed

me to preach the Gospel to the poor. Step one in his job description,

preached the Gospel. He sent me to heal the broken heart. At

step two to proclaim liberty to the captives. Three recovery aside to the blind,

four to set it liberty those who were oppressed. Five to proclaim the

acceptable year of the Lord. Then he finished his job description, says Then

he closed the book and gave it back to the attendant and sat down,

and the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on him.

He stood up, he read his job description, and he said, hey,

when I do these things, the spirit of the Lord is on me.

When the spirit of the Lord is on me. Then that's when things

happen. Do you know every time in scripture that Jesus does a multitudinal miracle,

in other words, mass healings, mass feedings, all those things,

it's either it's either preceded or followed by the phrase he was moved with compassion.

He was moved with compassion. He had an understanding because it was in

his anointing, he was created for it, and he was moved to do

those things because there was something that happened at the heart level of who Jesus

was. That when we are moved with compassion, when we can connect with

something on a deep emotional level that motivates us to action, that's where things

begin to happen and the spirit of the Lord is attracted to it. Now,

I could go and chase some rabbits here, but I think that there

are people that accidentally find their purpose that are not in the Kingdom of God.

I think there are people who stumble into their purpose. Now the Lord

will point you there. The Lord will will give you every opportunity to discover

it. But I believe there are people who accidentally discover their purpose who are

not part of the Kingdom of God, and those people also become highly successful

people because they just see those natural giftings and talents and compassion that those desires

that are on the inside, and they discover that purpose because that purpose has

power. Nea Maiah discovered that purpose. Jesus says, the spirit of the

Lord is attracted because I'm on assignment. And then he closed the book and

he sat down. The original language is imported here. In the synagogues of

the day, the synagogue is set up with a teaching rostrum and then a

chair, a seat set apart and designated for Messiah. A chair is always

empty, it's never filled. It says that he finished reading, he closed

the book and in the original language, immediately sat down. So he did

not return to his place in the synagogue. He sat down on the rostrum.

He sat down on that holy place and declared himself Messiah in front of

all those people, because he understood who he was and the anointing in his

life, and he wasn't afraid to be who God called him to be?

Are you afraid to be who God called you to be? Because it feels

so big, you get a little pull of it and you think, oh

no, I don't know that. I'm not smart enough to do that.

I don't have enough money to do that, I don't have enough education to

do that. List. Let me just let me let y'all in a little

secret. I'm probably the dumbest person in this room, but I'm smart enough

to never be the smartest person in the room. See, my anointing is

to help people find their purpose with a little side dish of networking and connecting

people for the right task. You know, I love Calvin, but I'm

not gonna call Calvin to come fix my air conditioner at my house. Amen,

I'm calling Chase. Why Because he's skilled, he's talented to be able

to do that, to get the right person in the right place to accomplish

the job. And that's part of my giftedness is to network and get those

people in the right places to create something and something great. You know,

the the key to successful kingdom living is understanding who you are and not trying

to live under it or above it, but just sat in the chair that

was designed for you, to just take a seat and boldly be who God

created you to be. Now, I don't remember, I don't I don't

know if there's anybody left. But when I became, when I went from

youth pastor to lead pastor at Cornerstone, you know, there was this It

was this pivotal moment where I had to go in for my interview with the

board. And and I went in and I sat down, and you know,

they interviewed me to ask all these questions. I don't know if any

of y'all were part of that meeting or not. And and at the time,

I dressed at church the way I dress now, just jeans. I

will tell you though, that most I don't hardly ever wear flip flops on

the stage. Back then I wore flip flops a whole lot. I got

on, hey, dudes, right now, no cowboy boots. I dressed

down today because it's July. A man, if you want to know how

dressy I feel, the day is if I'm wearing cowboy boots, it's a

dressy day. Nothing else really changes. And I sat down and they said,

hey, you know, uh, would you consider? And I could

tell they were nervous. I said, would you consider? I said what

then? You know, well, hm, would you consider dressing up a

little more on Sundays? And I and I and I had this moment where,

you know, I thought, and I said, this is this This

answer I'm about to give is probably pivotal, even though it's something true of

you all. Amen. So I thought, how can I tell the truth

but remains true to myself? Amen? And I looked at them and I

said, I will consider it. And I gave it consideration. I gave

it consideration. Amen. I sat there and I thought, who's going to

hell if I don't wear a jacket? Honestly, I mean, that's that's

that's that because I really, deep down I wanted to make sure that I

wasn't offending the people I was called to reach, the hurting, broken people

in our community. Amen. You know what, I just said, Hey,

you know what, I'm gonna wear a jacket for a couple of weeks

and just see what happened. So I put on my jeans and a T

shirt the jacket over it, and man, I preached it. I thought

I was gonna have a heat stroke for like the first six weeks I was

there. I was like, who And I remember it happened. It was

like this epic moment where I was preaching, I was sweating. I couldn't

see I was trying to wipe the sweat out of my eyes. I preached

a little harder back then for some reason. And I was wiping the sweat

out of my eyes, and I took my jacket off and I pitched it

like that, and when it landed, it landed over beside the drums,

kind of in between beside the between the drums and the wall. It landed,

and I preached, and I remember that I just never came back to

church with a jacket on, just never did, as a matter of fact,

like it was a few years later, we found my jacket tucked over

between the wall and the drums where I had thrown it. And you're like,

why are you telling this? Because that wasn't me. And I can't

be something i'm not. I can't operate in the anointing and be something i'm

not. If you are trying to pretend to be somebody you're not, you

will never truly step into your purpose. You need to take off the mask

and just be you. And you think people won't like it, they may

not, but I will tell you this, you're a person. Your purpose

will be both attractive and repulsive. It will draw people who are lighthearted,

and it will repel those who are not. When the dog commercial comes on

TV, I go get something to drink, and that's okay, Cornerstone.

We are not built to reach everybody. It's not who we are. Not

everybody. I know this is shocking to most of you. Not everybody likes

what we do. Some of y'all don't like how we do it. But

you're attracted to the purpose enough to put up with the method because the why

supersedes the how. When you step into the fullness of who God created you

to be, your why will supersede the how, and the things that you

used to think we're important won't seem quite as important anymore. And the things

that you used to just absolutely just think that you had to have when melt

away, and you won't need those things anymore. And it'll be like,

oh, no, I make less than I've ever made, but I feel

like I have more than I've ever had. Because God's provision is not about

the American dream. It's about kingdom, citizenship and kingdom purpose and authority.

In First Corinthians, Chapter twelve, verse eighteen, this is what God thinks

about it. After we get this list of these nine gifts of the spirit

that we talked about a couple of months ago, he says in First Corinthians,

chapter twelve, verse eighteen. But now God has set the members,

each one of them in the body, just as he pleased. He set

the members. They sat down in their place, and they fulfilled the purpose

that they're supposed to fulfill. And if they were all one member, where

would the body be? But now, indeed there are many members yet one

body. All of our purposes are different. Every single person is created for

an individual task to be used in the hands of God. But together we

create a force that the enemy cannot reckon. With that the enemy cannot defeat.

If every single one of us is operating on purpose, it is too

much for the enemy to handle. And we will literally take over our community

because we have the spirit of the Lord attracted to the anointing, the purpose

that each and every one of us lives in. Now you don't have to

clap its, okay, And you're thinking, well, you know what,

I don't know that I have anything that excites me like that. Look for

it. And the reality is you do have something, you just don't think

God can use it. You have something that just excites you, something that

that just motivates you. But you don't think God can use that. God

can use anything. It's a matter of fact, God can do something.

If you're thinking that way, God can probably do something through you that's never

been done before to draw people into the Kingdom that are on the outside looking

anything and there's no place for me there. You think, Oh, well,

I just I like Japanese cartoons. I just I just love Japanese cartoons.

Hey what about this? How about how about starting a group about Japanese

cartoons. Nobody else in our church LIFs Japanese cartoon You don't know that.

You know why, because we've never had a group for people who like Japanese

cartoons. I don't even know if it's Japanese. I'm struggling here. Start

the group, and you know what, it may not be for people in

the church. It may be for all those friends you have that you share

that in common with, but you've never been able to bring it to a

spiritual purpose. But now you start a small group over it, so now

it's pointed towards a spiritual purpose. So those people come and give you an

opportunity to speak life, to be able to speak. Oh, I gosh,

this pains me to say I love Taylor's not not me, not me,

not not not my? I mean, what of was it not mean?

Maybe you're out there and you say I love Taylor Swift, start a

swifty small group and find some deep spiritual meaning in those songs. It's not

there, but God can use it, you know what? You know what?

I just I feel like I'm going through life alone and man, my

purpose. I think my purpose is to help other people that feel alone get

connected with meaning and start a group for people that fell alone. I just

I love money. Well, that's the root of all evil. Now,

I just think about I think about money. I'm good at making money.

I'm good at I see those ideas, I see how to do those things.

Hey, how about this? How about start businesses and become a distribution

center for the wealth and the Kingdom of God and help us carry the gospel

around the world. You know, Chase, can I talk about you for

a second? You know, uh, Chase, Chase Thomas. He's one

of our board members. And Chase, you've always felt that in your your

heart that you were going to be a full time missionary and on the mission

field somewhere, and God's never opened that door. But what God has done

is He's given him an amazing mind to be able to start and run a

business, that's able to create wealth, that's able to create money, and

he supports missionaries all over the world. So God tweaked what he originally thought

just a little bit and said, hey, man, I've given you another

gift too, So I'm going to bring those things together and in that you'll

be able to find purpose and fulfillment. And listen, he's all the time

calling me saying, hey, we give too much away, and it's why

he successful because these on purpose. Now, let me tell you what I'm

not saying. I'm not telling you to go quit your job. That's not

what I'm telling you. I'm telling you to find your purpose while somebody else

is paying you to find it. I'm telling you, I'm telling you to

let that thing set you on fire on the inside, to set you a

blaze so that when you get off in the afternoons, you're working three or

four hours on the thing that gives you purpose, and you get that thing

moving and you get those people attracted to it so that you're out there doing

what you're called to do, because listen, your job may not be your

purpose. Your job may allow you to complete your purpose. And you get

that thing moving, and you get people attracted to it, and so it

gets a little momentum, and then it can get a little more momentum,

and it's like that snowball going down a hill, and it just gets bigger

and bigger and bigger, and suddenly you realize, oh, my goodness,

I never thought I could have a company drawing Japanese cartoons that people get saved

too. Because purpose makes room for itself. When the spirit of the Lord

is attracted to it, the enemy can't do anything with it. He has

no plan against it. He cannot derail it. But if you're in survival

mode, you're never going to be fulfilled and complete the way you see other

people and Acts, Chapter two, verse seventeen. Band come and get ready

and acts. Chapter two, verse seventeen. It says, and it shall

come to pass in the last days, says God, that I'll pour out

my spirit on all flesh. Now, what is the spirit of the Lord

attracted to the anointing purpose? I don't know how to make anything happen.

I don't know how to make it. I'm about I'm about to give it

to you out of the greatest Pentecostal scripture in the Bible. I mean,

this purpose is purpose. We're gonna get emails about. This purpose is a

Pentecostal thing. Listen, if you're living a spiritfield life, you should find

purpose easier and better than anybody else in the world. Because the Holy Ghost

is supposed to be guiding you. You're supposed to be living a spiritual life.

You're supposed to be listening, and he's putting you in the right place.

This is what Joel wrote in the Old Testament that Peter decides to quote

the day the New Testament Church was born. Because we're the ones that are

supposed to be creating the culture of the world. I'm tired of a church

that has to live under the constraints of somebody else's culture. Acts Chapter two,

verse seventeen. And it shall come to pass in the last day,

says God, that I'll pour out my spirit on all flesh. Your sons

and your daughters shall prophesy, shall speak things that are not as though they

are, that will speak things into existence that don't yet exist. Your young

men shall see visions. Wellyse when you get on purpose, you start seeing

things nobody else sees. Your old men shall dream dreams. When you get

on purpose, those young men that start seeing visions and they have a little

piece of it will start coming to you for mentorship, and you'll be able

to string those visions into a long line, and instead of a picture,

it becomes a movie. It becomes a plan to go from where they are

where God's design for their life is. God's just waiting on a few of

us seasoned saints to realize that it's our purpose to help people find purpose.

Your young men and women shall see visions. Your old men, there are

no old women, shall dream dreams. And on my men's servants and on

my maid servants. It doesn't matter who you are. You're not disqualified from

purpose. You're not disqualified from changing the world as we know it. I

will pour out my spirit on those days, and they you, the people,

under the sound of my voice right now, sitting in this room,

right there at home, or ten years from now, when you find this

on replay on YouTube, you shall prophesy. You shall call things that don't

exist into the visible world through your words and your actions. And your reckless

abandon to achieve everything that God has called you to achieve. That's your purpose.

Find it. Go home tonight and ask God, God, what breaks

my heart? God? What makes me mad? What makes me feel fulfilled

in my life? What have I done it makes me feel fulfilled? And

if he says six Flags, go get a job as a janitor at six

Flags and walk around with all the smile and laughing people and share Jesus every

opportunity you get. And then the favor will rest on you, and before

long you'll be running the department. Then you'll move on to the executive team.

You'll be a decision maker. You can influence the way six Flags operates,

six Flags works. That's the way God does it. That's the way

he did it with Joseph. That's why I'll do it with you. Purpose

is life. Everybody's staying with me all over the building. Listen, if

you're here today and you've never asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins.

You've never asked him to wash you clean, to cleanse you, to live

in your life on a daily basis, never ask him to do those things.

But you feel something strange. You don't know yet, but that's the

Holy Spirit drawing you. I want to tell you something. If that's where

you are today, your only hope is to stumble into purpose, to accidentally

find it. But if you'll trust Jesus today, he will pull you,

he will bump you, he will nudge you towards purpose as long as you

wake up with your heart set to live for him. I don't know about

you, but it sounds like a good deal that he'll push me towards purpose

and he'll save me from hell. That's a win win. If you're here

today, you want to ask Jesus to save you, forgive you of your

sins. Maybe a long time ago you prayed that prayer, but now you've

got sin in your life and you don't hear him anymore. You can't,

You can't fill the presence of the Lord anymore. Today, come back to

him, repent and allow him to wash you clean, make you brand new.

If that's you, I'm going to count to three in just a minute.
