  1. But I want to jump into part two of our series,

  2. Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. How many of you when

  3. you were kids now listen to a lot of y'all

  4. because we got a fairly young church. A lot of

  5. y'all are not gonna know this show. But how many

  6. of you can remember mister Rogers? You know he was.

  7. He was like the ideal neighbor. He was always in

  8. a good mood, he was always cheery. The man changed

  9. shoes when he got home every day. I mean, you know,

  10. just to keep his floor clean. I guess I don't know,

  11. but uh, it was just a picture of an old

  12. way of life.

  13. That was just the norm back then.

  14. But it's something that we have disassociated so far from

  15. in today's world.

  16. I'm gonna ask a question.

  17. If you want to respond, you can if you don't

  18. have to, if you don't want to, But how many

  19. of you would be honest enough to say that you

  20. don't even know your neighbors names?

  21. Yeah?

  22. Uh, we live in a different world and we have

  23. lost what we thought as old time American values. But

  24. actually it's an erosion of the fundamental kindness and friendliness

  25. that was the key to evangelism. In the early Church,

  26. and not just the early Church, but in the church

  27. up until just the last twenty years. Most evangelism didn't

  28. happen inside our buildings. Most evangelism happened out in the

  29. world when people were inviting their neighbors over for dinner

  30. and talking to them about Jesus, and at work and

  31. talking to people about Jesus. And that's the way evangelism happened.

  32. As a matter of fact, in the early Church, that's

  33. the way it happened.

  34. It says that they broke bread from.

  35. House to house, they prayed for one another, and that

  36. people were at to the church daily as a result

  37. of friendship and homes.

  38. That the church grew daily.

  39. You know, the reality is, if we want the church

  40. to grow daily, we could have a church service every day.

  41. We could. I mean that's something we could do.

  42. I'd be dead in about a week, but we could

  43. do a church service every day. But the reality is,

  44. I don't know that we would see any more people

  45. get saved than we already see until we get back

  46. to the scriptural basis of evangelism. And that's us evangelizing.

  47. The people that we know.

  48. If you got a Bible, go to a John, chapter four,

  49. verse thirty four. W we John chapter four, verse thirty four.

  50. It says Jesus said to them, my food is to

  51. do the will of him who sent me, and to

  52. finish his work. We could preach a series just on

  53. the last part of that sentence, and to finish his work. Listen,

  54. Jesus right there says that the Father could do it.

  55. Come on, somebody, the Father could do it, but he

  56. has chosen to delegate the finishing of the work to Jesus,

  57. who then delegated it to us. That literally, we live

  58. our lives in such a way that we finish the

  59. work of the Father.

  60. What an incredible mandate on our.

  61. Lives that God has entrusted us to finish his work.

  62. Do you not say there's still Do you not say

  63. there's still four months?

  64. And then comes the harvest.

  65. Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and

  66. look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest.

  67. Let's pray, Father, we thank you for your word. See

  68. only change agent on the face of the planet. And

  69. I pray that today something happens a little different to

  70. us than happens on most Sundays. But Lord, that we

  71. are motivated empowered, initiated, ignited Lord Uh to see things differently,

  72. so that we do things differently in Jesus' name. Amen,

  73. you know, Uh, I wish that I wish that I

  74. could have been there to actually.

  75. See Jesus teach these things.

  76. Because I think when we read it written, we miss

  77. a lot of Jesus' communication style. I think that we

  78. miss a lot of what's happening because we can't see

  79. where he's teaching these things. Come on, somebody. We can't

  80. see where he's pointing and what he's doing. But he

  81. looks at his disciples and he says, hey, you say

  82. there's still four months to the harvest. But look, he

  83. didn't say go Look, he didn't take them somewhere where

  84. they weren't already.

  85. He said, lift up your eyes. Look, the fields are

  86. already white for harvest. There's already things ready right now.

  87. You don't have to go anywhere. You don't have to

  88. do anything else.

  89. All you need to do is lift up your eyes

  90. and look and see what I see. In other words,

  91. Jesus is telling us you don't have to go anywhere

  92. else other than where you already go to be part

  93. of the harvest, to help bring the harvest.

  94. In a lot of times.

  95. We think that that we got to go and stand

  96. on a corner somewhere with a bullhorn.

  97. Amen. You know that that we go down to Atlanta,

  98. we get.

  99. A bullhorn, we stand on the corner and we're listen.

  100. That's not for everybody. I'm gonna go as far as

  101. say that's not for me. I'm first of all, I

  102. don't like to sweat. Come on somebody, especially not for me.

  103. Between into May and you know, beginning of September in Georgia,

  104. I know that I'm not called the bullhorn ministry.

  105. Amen. That's not for everybody. Because see here.

  106. There's a there's a difference between an evangelist and a witness.

  107. An evangelist is gifted.

  108. And called and mandated to stand and challenge somebody to

  109. make a crisis decision in that moment.

  110. You know you're an evangelist.

  111. If the first thing you think when your waitress walks

  112. to the table to serve you your lunch today, if

  113. the first thing you think to say to her is

  114. if you died right now, do you have the assurance No,

  115. you're going to heaven.

  116. But if you don't, you're going to have that's how

  117. you know if you're an evangelist.

  118. If the first thought that comes to your mind when

  119. she comes to the table is wow, you know what

  120. she looks.

  121. She looks down.

  122. So my goal is to make her smile, invite her

  123. to church, and leave her a big tip. You're probably

  124. not an evangelist, You're just a good Christian.

  125. Amen.

  126. There's different ways to skin a cat. I don't know

  127. even why we say that. I don't even know why

  128. that's a saying. I don't even know why.

  129. That's a saying.

  130. Although I did, I'm not going to tell you that

  131. story in Haiti one time. I know there was one

  132. on its way to be skinned, and it definitely made

  133. me appreciate the fact we were eating rice and beans.

  134. Amen.

  135. But there's more than one way to finish the work

  136. of the Father. And it's God's will that none should perish,

  137. but that all would have everlasting or eternal life. But

  138. he refuses to snap his fingers and do it.

  139. He's committed that into our hands, and he says, do

  140. it right where you are.

  141. You don't have to do anything else to make a

  142. difference than what you do right now, other than opening

  143. your eyes and seeing things in a different way. You

  144. are working with people who need a savior. You buy

  145. coffee from people that need a savior. Listen, if you

  146. want to challenge you on this. If you go to

  147. the same.

  148. Convenience store every morning on your.

  149. Way to work, and you buy coffee from the same

  150. person and you don't know the person's first.

  151. Name, I want to challenge you that Step one is.

  152. To learn your coffee person's first name, the person that

  153. runs the register. Just learn their first name over the

  154. next week. Know their name by Friday. Amen, so that

  155. you can come in next Friday and write their name

  156. down on a prayer card we're gonna give you so

  157. that you can pray that their heart would be prepared

  158. to receive the gospel.

  159. Amen. Can't listen. Some of y'all don't need to cook

  160. a pie. Go buy a pie. I'm gonna go.

  161. Tools of evangelism. I'm just I'm giving them to you

  162. right now, y'all. Write this down. Go buy a pie,

  163. take it home, take it out of the box, put

  164. it in your oven and heat it up. Carry it

  165. to your neighbor and knock on the door and say, hey,

  166. I just took this pie out of the oven. Don't

  167. tell them you don't tell them you made the pie.

  168. Don't start it out like a hypocrite. I mean we

  169. all are, but don't start it out that way. I

  170. just thought of you and I wanted you to have this.

  171. My name is Steve, who doesn't want a pie.

  172. Now they may look at you and say, oh, I

  173. can't have that. I'm diabetic or i'm you know what,

  174. we're vegans, and.

  175. This could get you at oil that if they look

  176. at you and say, well, we're vegan. Is that made

  177. with any animal products? Just to be safe, say yes

  178. and take the pie home. Amen, and just say.

  179. If they say those things to you, say oh, I'm

  180. so sorry.

  181. I didn't know, but I just wanted to make any

  182. I just wanted to take an opportunity to get to

  183. know you and introduce myself. And then on the way home,

  184. get out your phone and say, Sherry, my next door

  185. neighbor has diabetes.

  186. Pray for that every day.

  187. And then before you see Sherry again, get on the

  188. internet and do some searching about diabetes and find something

  189. if you can't cook, that you can buy that's okay

  190. for a diabetic to eat. And when you see Sharry Er,

  191. I say hey, listen, I was by the store and

  192. I got you something, and go back in your house,

  193. go out of your way, and start building a relationship

  194. with Chary. Because the fields are white for harvest. Do

  195. not start by saying, hey, come to church with me.

  196. Is that where we want you to end up? Maybe, Listen,

  197. I have no illusions that God sent me here to

  198. build a kingdom.

  199. He sent me here to build the kingdom. If you

  200. lead them to.

  201. Jesus in their driveway and they go to church with

  202. Pastor Jensen, I am excited about that.

  203. Amen. We just want people born into the kingdom. That's it.

  204. And you doing your part in that.

  205. Because the fields are white with harvest, to the point

  206. that only eleven percent, and this is in the Southeast

  207. United States, eleven percent of the population now identifies themselves

  208. as church attending Christians. Eleven percent, almost nine out of

  209. ten people you encounter are not church attending Christians.

  210. It's a big pool of people.

  211. America is now the second largest mission field in the world,

  212. only behind India. There are more unsaved people in America

  213. now than there is in China. Second largest mission field

  214. in the world is right here in our back door.

  215. Because we forgot how to be good neighbors. In Luke

  216. chapter ten, verse thirty, we read a pretty pretty common

  217. passage of scripture for those office that have been in

  218. church for a while, if you had And that's okay.

  219. But in Luke chapter ten, verse thirty, it says, then

  220. Jesus answered and said, a certain man went down from

  221. Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, who stripped him

  222. of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now,

  223. by chance, a certain priest came down that road, and

  224. when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

  225. So the preacher, the preacher was busy.

  226. Pastor, if you're watching this, do not be so busy

  227. going to visit the people that are already saved that

  228. you walk by the people that are lost. But we

  229. get so busy doing church stuff sometimes we're not really

  230. very good to the community. And that's an indictment on us,

  231. not as preachers, but us as individuals. But we just

  232. blame it on how busy we are taking care of

  233. the flock. Likewise, a Levite highly spiritual person. I'm gonna

  234. call this guy board member.

  235. Amen.

  236. Likewise a Levi, a team captain, a board member, a

  237. group leader. When he arrived at the place, came and looked,

  238. and then he passed by on the other side.

  239. Now listen, maybe the preacher didn't see.

  240. Him, but these people looked at him and moved to

  241. the other side of the road. But a certain Samaritan,

  242. as he journeyed, came where he was, and when he

  243. saw him, he had compassion. His heart was broken over

  244. the situation. What if we prayed and asked the Lord

  245. to show us the invisible wounds.

  246. They're not in a physical ditch.

  247. Bleeding, but they're in a life rut, and on the

  248. inside they're traumatized and broken and in need of help.

  249. What if we said, gee, what if we started every

  250. day and we said, Jesus, show me the hurting and

  251. broken people around me. Let me identify them so that

  252. I don't go to the other side of the road.

  253. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, poured

  254. oil and wine, and he set him on his own animal,

  255. and brought him to an inn and took care of him.

  256. On the next day when he departed, he took out

  257. two d naraim, gave them to the innkeeper and said

  258. to him take care of him and whatever more, whatever

  259. more you spend, when I come again, I'll repay you.

  260. He paid him up front, and.

  261. He said, listen, if taking care of this man cost any.

  262. More, let me know. I'll pay it when I get back.

  263. Sometimes we only enter relationships when we know we're getting

  264. something out of it. But to enter into a relationship

  265. and we don't know what it's gonna cost us. On

  266. the other side, we don't know what that what that

  267. withdrawal is gonna be. We don't know those things. We

  268. know this person's hurting, we know this person's broken. But

  269. I'm gonna choose to love that person like Jesus anyway,

  270. and I'm willing to pay for it whatever it is.

  271. I'm gonna go to the take that call at eleven

  272. thirty at night. I'm gonna go to their kid's birthday party.

  273. And I don't even like kids, especially their kids. Y'all know,

  274. y'all got friends like that look at me like I'm unspiritual.

  275. But I'm gonna pay the cost because their soul is

  276. worth it. Whatever more you spend, when I come again,

  277. I'll repay you. So which of these three do you

  278. think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves,

  279. and he said, he who showed mercy on him. Then

  280. Jesus said to him, go and do likewise. Jesus didn't say,

  281. right answer. You've moved from discipleship one oh one to

  282. discipleship two oh one.

  283. Because you knew the answer.

  284. You know the answer, Put the answer into practice. Start

  285. doing something with the knowledge you have. Will only been

  286. saved a week. You're a week ahead of somebody that's

  287. not saved.

  288. Amen. As a matter of fact, you're still fresh.

  289. Enough that you haven't been poisoned with the traditions of

  290. the church. That will tell you that those people are dirty,

  291. and those people come on somebody. Jesus was approached by

  292. a leper, and the man said, Lord, speak to me

  293. and heal me.

  294. And we've seen Jesus speak and people be healed.

  295. But Jesus went to the leper and he reached out

  296. his hand and he touched the leper, and the leper

  297. was healed. Because listen, leprosy. When you see leprosy in scripture,

  298. it's symbolic of sin.

  299. Because Jesus wasn't.

  300. Afraid of somebody's sin. I wasn't afraid of somebody's dirtiness,

  301. of somebody's wrong thinking he wasn't afraid of somebody dropping

  302. the F bomb every other word. Listen, if somebody saying

  303. the F word to you is going to send you

  304. to hell, you're.

  305. Just barely hanging on anyway. Now, you probably shouldn't jump

  306. in and join.

  307. But look past it, because Jesus looks at the soul

  308. of a person and he understands that the brokenness on

  309. the outside is symptomatic of the brokenness on the inside.

  310. And if the brokenness on the inside has a grace

  311. collision with Jesus, the brokenness on the inside is healed,

  312. and eventually the brokenness on the outside will follow.

  313. So it's time for us to do the hard work

  314. of being a neighbor for the purpose of evangelism.

  315. Let me say that again, for the purpose of evangelism, Like, well,

  316. now that sounds a little hypocritical.

  317. I'm only going to be their friends so they get safe.

  318. Yeah, what better reason. You became friends with somebody at

  319. work so you could get a promotion. You became friends

  320. with somebody because they have a nice boat and you want.

  321. To go fishing. We become friends with people because of

  322. what people can do for us. Simple fact of the matter.

  323. Why not become.

  324. Friends with somebody with the intention of leading them to Jesus,

  325. of saving their soul, pulling them out of the ire,

  326. changing their eternal destination.

  327. Man, you can come and get ready.

  328. Listen, I don't don't in just a minute. When I

  329. make the altar call, it's not time for y'all to

  330. pack up. We still got a few things we need

  331. to do.

  332. Uh.

  333. We're baptizing five people today and uh, and then we're

  334. going to uh. We're gonna pray for over all of

  335. our all all of our kids and teachers before we

  336. leave today too, So everybody stay for that. Let me

  337. go ahead and tell you to before I finish up

  338. the space. It's gonna be a bang, I'm preach mm

  339. hmmm h Your kids are gonna come in here and

  340. come to the altar and we're gonna pray over them,

  341. and teachers anybody works at a school. We're gonna pray

  342. over them. And you're going to be tempted to grab

  343. your child. No, do not move. We're gonna take your

  344. children back to kids Church and you're gonna check them

  345. out the normal way. This is why, because we want

  346. to make sure that your child ends up at your

  347. house and not at somebody else's house, because the safety

  348. of your children is a priority to us. That's why

  349. once I make the altar call, you're not gonna be

  350. able to use the bathroom because we're.

  351. Blocking the hallway.

  352. Nobody can go down the kids hallway because we don't

  353. want somebody hiding and taking your kids. So don't get

  354. mad and change churches because you couldn't go to the

  355. bathroom during.

  356. The altar call. Come to the altar.

  357. And he'll handle that problem for you too, Amen, Isaiah,

  358. Chapter fifty.

  359. Eight, verse ten.

  360. If you extend your soul to the hungry and satisfy

  361. the afflicted soul, if you extend yourself to those that

  362. are hurting and broken, that's what it says. Then your

  363. light shall dawn in the darkness, and your darkness shall

  364. be as noonday. The Lord will guide you continually and

  365. satisfy your soul, and drought and strengthen your bones.

  366. You shall be like a water garden, and like a

  367. spring of water whose waters do not fail those from

  368. among you. So I know the reality of this series

  369. we're doing.

  370. Not everybody's gonna catch it, Pastor, I mean, do you

  371. have any illusion that everybody's gonna get it, I mean,

  372. no going to see the reality is, it doesn't take

  373. everybody to turn a community upside down. It just takes

  374. a few somebodies. Listen, just a few people to realize

  375. that Jesus talking to me today. I just came to

  376. talk to somebody.

  377. Today, not everybody. Those from among.

  378. You shall build up the old waste places. You shall

  379. raise up the foundations of many generations, generational impact.

  380. That there are people who haven't had a child.

  381. Yet that you will reach and it will impact their

  382. grandkids and their great grandkids because of your efforts in

  383. building relationship for them to find Jesus today. You shall

  384. be called the repair of the breach, the restorer of

  385. streets to dwell in.

  386. So the reality is that.

  387. When God created the earth, man stood in a place

  388. where there was no chasm between them and God.

  389. God came from heaven every day in.

  390. The cool of the afternoon, and he walked with at

  391. him and even he talked with them, and through one

  392. act of rebellion, that relationship was broken, and a chasm

  393. was formed, and no longer could man just simply stretch

  394. out his hand and get to Holy God. There was

  395. a separation and there was a need for sacrifice and

  396. priests because sin requires blood.

  397. And then Jesus came.

  398. And Jesus became a bridge. But the reality is is

  399. the chasm is like this.

  400. And Jesus is the bridge.

  401. But he sits under humanity to serve. He sits under

  402. humanity that has saved. He sits under humanity that has.

  403. Lost to serve.

  404. The Bible tells us that if Jesus is lifted up,

  405. that he's lifted.

  406. Into the gap.

  407. And he fills the gap between falling humanity and Holy God.

  408. That's your job is to lift Jesus up by building

  409. relationships so that people can see him as.

  410. Their lord and savior.

  411. And when we lift him up and we glorify him

  412. through our lives and the gap is filled, you become

  413. the repairer of the breach. God is looking for some

  414. breach repairers today.

  415. For some people that will just see people differently. Today.

  416. It's not your hateful neighbor that won't cut their grass.

  417. It's a broken soul. It's in need of a savior,

  418. and you need to wade through the waste high grass

  419. to become a repair of the breach. That's your boss.

  420. Who everybody hates because he's a mean old cuss. Needs somebody,

  421. needs you to build a relationship for the purpose of

  422. leading him to Jesus. Maybe it's your mom or your dad.

  423. You know, my dad's not doing well right now. It's

  424. probably the very end of his life.

  425. We're talking.

  426. He told my mom the other day that he didn't

  427. think he was going to live very long. He doesn't

  428. do everything right. But I had an opportunity a few

  429. years ago to present the gospel and see him accept

  430. Jesus into his life. And now we're at that moment.

  431. And now we're at that moment because that breach was

  432. repaired and restored.
