  1. And Amen, you got a Bible. Go to Namiah chapter eight.

  2. We're gonna continue in our in our uh our core

  3. values series, We're gonna talk about joy today, Alan, I mean,

  4. transparency is is like the foundation of everything.

  5. But this is my favorite one. Joy is my favorite one.

  6. I I just, uh, I do everything in my power

  7. to make sure that I maximize not the joy I feel,

  8. but the joy that I express every single day. Amen,

  9. you know you can express joy maybe when you don't

  10. feel joy. I guess today is all about choices, right,

  11. So we we choose to do those things. And I

  12. want to talk to you a little bit today about uh,

  13. about joy and what joy really is because it's, uh,

  14. you know, a lot of times in society we think

  15. joy is the.

  16. Little brother of happiness.

  17. Come on, somebody, it's like it's not quite laughing, but

  18. it's not crying either. Joy just kind of I feel okay,

  19. but I don't feel great. So I got some joy.

  20. I'm not quite happy yet. But that's not what the

  21. Bible talks about, is joy at all. As a matter

  22. of fact, there's nothing emotional about joy. Joy is that

  23. thing that resides somewhere right in here in us down

  24. at the very fabric of our being, and it allows

  25. us to stand strong during difficult times and difficult situations.

  26. In Niemiah chapter eight, starting in verse nine, it says

  27. in Niemiah, who is the governor Ezra, the priests inscribed

  28. and the Levites who taught the people, said to all

  29. the people, this day is holy to the Lord your God.

  30. Do not mourn nor weep. For all the people wept

  31. when they heard the words of the law. The city

  32. walls had just been rebuilt, eight had just been hung.

  33. They built a platform in the town center, and they

  34. had begin to read God's Law for the first time

  35. since Israel had returned from captivity. And they were broken

  36. over the reading of the law, both because they realized

  37. their failings and also because they realized those high expectations

  38. that they were being called to. You know what, our

  39. relationship with the Lord, the enemy will use our failings,

  40. and he will use those high expectations against us. Come on, somebody.

  41. The Lord never uses anything against us. Everything he does

  42. he uses for us. He calls us up. He doesn't

  43. speak to where we are, He speaks to where he's

  44. calling us to. In scripture, when he finds somebody, he

  45. always gives them a glimpse of their destiny, not just

  46. their immediate circumstance, not just their situation. But when he

  47. Foundon was hiding behind a barn trying to get enough

  48. wheat to grind some bread. And the Lord sent an angel,

  49. and the angel shows up, and this is what he says,

  50. to get in. He says, get in you, mighty man

  51. of Valor. Gideon said, whoa, ay, you got the wrong number.

  52. Come on, somebody, because I'm from the smallest tribe, and

  53. my family is the smallest family in the tribe, and

  54. I'm the smallest of my family.

  55. I'm the least of the least of the least.

  56. But God didn't say, hey, little man, He said, get in, you,

  57. mighty man of Valor. See, it's all about destiny with God,

  58. because he already sees tomorrow as well as he knows yesterday.

  59. And he's always calling us into that next great thing,

  60. that next thing that he's doing.

  61. And the people they responded to the reading.

  62. Of God's word, and they were sad and they were broken,

  63. and they said, listen, don't weep Verse ten. Then he

  64. said to them, listen, go your way, eat the fat,

  65. drink the sweet. Now first of all, I'm not calling

  66. y'all off. Y'all's diet.

  67. Come on, somebody, that's That's not what this is about.

  68. He says, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send

  69. portions to those for whom nothing is prepared. For this

  70. day is holy to our Lord, do not sorrow, for

  71. the joy.

  72. Of the Lord is your strengths.

  73. So the Levites quieted all the people, saying, be still,

  74. for the day is holy.

  75. Do not be grieved. And all the people went their way.

  76. To eat and drink and to send portions and rejoice

  77. greatly because they understood the words that were declared to them.

  78. Let's pray, Father, thank you for your word. See only

  79. change agent on the face of the planet. And I

  80. pray right now, not a little while from now, but

  81. right now. These words take root deep down, Lord, at

  82. that fountain place that springs life. Lord, that it grows

  83. and brings a harvest that's overflowing. That we're consumed by

  84. your call in Jesus' name. Amen, Amen, and amen. So

  85. we are reading and me and Miah says, hey, here's

  86. the key. Here's the key to joy. You're sorrowful, here's

  87. the key. Go about your business. Do the things you do,

  88. and in the process of doing the things you.

  89. Do, look for people that don't have and also do

  90. for them too.

  91. Now let me say that again, because I don't think

  92. some of y'all are buying it by the look on

  93. your face that he says, here's the key to joy.

  94. Just go do the things you do. Go eat the fat,

  95. go drink the sweet. Just go do the things you do,

  96. and on the way, look for somebody that doesn't have

  97. and help them out. Doesn't have what, doesn't have peace,

  98. don't have money, don't have food, don't have clothes, don't

  99. have whatever, they don't have. Come on, somebody, he said,

  100. look for those that don't have and give a portion

  101. to them.

  102. And then when we continue to read that.

  103. Passage of scripture, there's a transformation that happens. He says, Hey,

  104. the joy of the Lord is your strength. And we

  105. get to the bottom and it says, hey, they went

  106. and they rejoiced greatly because they understood the word of God.

  107. Here's why joy is the core value.

  108. Because joy is about you being you and doing what

  109. you do.

  110. And it is acting others. That's it.

  111. Your whole Christian existence is about you doing what you

  112. do and making an impact in other people's lives. We

  113. get so worried about us. Come on, now, we get

  114. so worried about us, We get so worried about the

  115. things that were overwhelmed by the pressure of the things,

  116. and we stop looking for people.

  117. The key to joy is other people.

  118. I believe when you were laying on your deathbed, you

  119. were not going to think, boy, I wish I had

  120. paid my house off. I wish I had I wish

  121. I had drove two new cars that I didn't get

  122. to drive. I wish I had done. I don't think

  123. you're going to I think what you're gonna say is

  124. you're going to look back on all the people you

  125. helped and probably regret some people you didn't.

  126. Because our lives come down to people.

  127. Because there's enough Jesus in all of humanity. And listen,

  128. I'm not just talking about believers. I'm talking about in

  129. all humanity. There's enough of that God residue left that

  130. we look back and we.

  131. Know it's about people. We know it's about other.

  132. People, whether we've hurt people or helped people, and joy

  133. is tied to that experience. But we get so lost

  134. in the weeds. And listen, here's the thing. We get

  135. so consumed with the idea of righteousness and holiness that

  136. it becomes about everything we shouldn't do rather than what

  137. we should do. And the moment you begin to live

  138. in the negative, the don't. Come on somebody. The moment

  139. you start living in the don't is the moment you

  140. lose joy. If the enemy can make you think that

  141. whole Christian experience is about the things you're not supposed

  142. to do, you will live a less than miserable existence.

  143. But the reality is when we live in the dews, listen,

  144. I want our church to be known.

  145. For what we're for, not what we're against. That's why

  146. I spend so much time talking about what we're for,

  147. what we're for, what we're for. Now.

  148. There's a lot of things I don't like. Amen, But

  149. if i'm four of the things I'm for, I don't

  150. have to worry about the things i'm against, Because if

  151. I build the things I'm for, They're going to overwhelm

  152. and over the power of the things that I'm against.

  153. And we get so lost in the pressure of life

  154. and trying to maintain that we forget and just say

  155. Jesus ay, just go, just go, and do you man,

  156. just go and eat and drink and look for some

  157. people to make an impact in You know, there's a

  158. there's a book The Boy, the Fox, the Mole, and

  159. the Horse. And in this book there's this this moment

  160. where the boy and the horse they're lost in the

  161. wilderness and the boys just kind of overwhelmed. Fear has

  162. gripped him and he looks at the horse and he says,

  163. I can't see the way out.

  164. Now. Of course this is just a book.

  165. So the horse looks back at him and speaks, right,

  166. if you get in the wilderness and you have a

  167. conversation with your horse, please call me because we're either

  168. gonna put you in counseling or we're gonna go on

  169. the road.

  170. Amen, make a lot of money.

  171. But nonetheless, so the horse looks back and he says, hey,

  172. can you see the next step? The boy was looking

  173. for a way out, and the horse said, but can

  174. you see the next step? And the boy said, yes,

  175. I can. And here's the profound thing. The horse said,

  176. take it. And it transforms the journey into this scary, overwhelming,

  177. dark thing to a place where I'm just taking the

  178. next step that I can see and now I go

  179. from a place that's trying to kill me to I'm

  180. enjoying the process of going through a place I've never

  181. been before, all of the new experiences and all of

  182. the new sounds and all of the new smells, and

  183. through this wilderness. If you just take the next step. See,

  184. living in God's joy.

  185. Is just about taking the next step.

  186. It's stopping all the worry about what's going on beyond

  187. my field of view. You know, most of us don't

  188. actually struggle with bad things that are wrong. We struggle

  189. with the idea that things can be bad and wrong.

  190. The moment we get a little pressure, we start thinking

  191. about all the things that can happen if the pressure

  192. is not corrected.

  193. Right now, now, there's this this amazing.

  194. Narrative of Jesus where he's with his disciples and he

  195. tells them to get in a boat and go to

  196. the other side of the sea, and that he's going

  197. to meet them there. And Jesus retreats into the mountains

  198. and he prays, and the twelve disciples they get in

  199. this rowboat and they start rowing across the water. And

  200. it says, and the King James, it says, and the

  201. wind became contrary. That means it was blowing so hard

  202. they couldn't row anymore. The waves kicked up in a

  203. storm coming and they're rowing as hard as they can row,

  204. but they're stuck in place, and they're fearful because this

  205. storm's coming, and they that they couldn't go anywhere. Now,

  206. obviously they could have turned around and went back where

  207. they came from because the wind was blowing in that direction. Amen,

  208. they couldn't go that way. They could have gone that way,

  209. but they had enough, they had enough faith to know

  210. that Jesus said, go to the other side. So they

  211. were on their way to the other side, and they

  212. refused to go back. I think there's people in this

  213. room that you've hit some some turbulence in your journey,

  214. but you know enough not to go back.

  215. Amen, you know that that was worse than this that

  216. even they You know, when when when.

  217. Israel came out of Egypt, they looked back at the

  218. leaks and garlics and they wanted to go back, but

  219. Moses said, listen, there ain't no goe like in no onion.

  220. That's good enough to go back.

  221. So they're rowing and they're rowing, and they're rowing and

  222. they're trying to get to their and they can't get

  223. to the other side, and here comes Jesus walking on

  224. the water, and they thought it was a ghost and

  225. they got scared. I have you no, ghosts not real.

  226. You have to raise your hand.

  227. They're not.

  228. If you've encountered something supernatural, it's supernatural, not a ghost, angel, demon.

  229. I'll let you wrestle with that part of it, right.

  230. So they saw something I watch, they saw something that

  231. wasn't there. Their manifestation of imagination put.

  232. More pressure on the situation.

  233. Is your manifestation of your imagination putting more pressure on

  234. the situation. He's like, oh no, we can't go that way.

  235. And now there's a ghost chasing us in the other direction.

  236. And Jesus sensed their fear and he said, no, it's

  237. I fear not. And they're like, come on, man, quit

  238. this fear not stuff. Don't you see we're in a

  239. storm and a little rowboat that you put us in.

  240. And Jesus looks at him and he says, hey, if

  241. that's you, If that's you, Jesus bid me to come

  242. to you. So Jesus looks at the boat and he says,

  243. come jo He's talking to everybody in the boat. Anytime

  244. Jesus speaks to an individual in scripture, he calls them

  245. by name.

  246. Every single time.

  247. So because he didn't say Peter, he was talking to

  248. everybody in the boat.

  249. And Peter gets up.

  250. Now, at some point, there's that moment, there's that moment

  251. where potential is still potential before faith becomes faith. Do

  252. y'all know that moment that that I'm talking about. It's

  253. that moment where you're like, are we sure? There had

  254. to be that moment?

  255. Right?

  256. Peter stands up, And if you've ever stood up in

  257. a row boat, when somebody stands up, everybody knows it's

  258. like the scared cat.

  259. Everybody grabs the side. Right.

  260. But do you know before you can ever be a

  261. water walker, you got to be a boat rocker.

  262. Because here's what the world wants. The world wants you to.

  263. Be stressed out like them. They want you to be

  264. beaten down and depressed and medicated like everybody else. They

  265. want you to worry. What if they want you to

  266. come on because that has become normal in the world

  267. because the world doesn't know Jesus. Had the world known Jesus,

  268. they would not have crucified, the King of Glory. The

  269. Bible says his ways are higher than their ways. They

  270. don't understand him. They can't fathom him because they don't

  271. have the joy on the inside. But somewhere in the

  272. rocking of the boat, I don't know, maybe Peter read

  273. that book. He decided to take a step, and he

  274. picks up his foot and he swings it over the boat.

  275. And I just imagine that when it got about right

  276. there and everybody realized what he was doing, they started,

  277. have you lost your mind?

  278. And his foot hits the water, and Faith held him

  279. up right.

  280. Faith supported him. The laws of physics say it can't.

  281. At no point did Jesus say, Peter, I want you

  282. to sit down and get out a piece of paper

  283. and calculate the water displaced. But and see if your

  284. foot is big enough to hold up your body weight

  285. as it displaces the water.

  286. He just said, Come.

  287. Peter gets out the boat. He takes the step that

  288. he can see towards Jesus, and he quit worrying about

  289. the things that were around. He quit worrying about the pressure,

  290. because he knew the closer to Jesus he was to

  291. the answer.

  292. He was.

  293. Now let me give you the bad news about a

  294. joyful life. Doesn't always mean things work out. There's no

  295. promise that it's always gonna work out. Come on, somebody.

  296. We all go through tough times. We got saved from sin,

  297. not the pressure of the world. So the moment joy

  298. takes over that strength that says, hey, I can do anything,

  299. he steps out and he takes his eyes off Jesus

  300. and he begins to sink. The Bible says when he

  301. began to sink, all the disciples through a life preserver.

  302. He grabbed it.

  303. He almost drowned, and he doggy paddles back and he

  304. pulls himself in the boat.

  305. Not ain't what the Bible says.

  306. The Bible says that when he began to sink, Jesus

  307. reached down and grabbed him and pulled him up, and

  308. Jesus put him in the boat.

  309. And when Jesus got in.

  310. The boat, the boat was immediately on the other side.

  311. So that means when he stepped out of the boat,

  312. because Jesus called him and not the people in the boat,

  313. he was closer to the answer than he was the problem. See,

  314. joy allows faith to manifest in our lives. Joy is

  315. that strength that says I can do anything if I

  316. just believe I can do anything and make it through anything,

  317. because Jesus is on my side.

  318. No. Pastor Clay, I heard him say it.

  319. This morning in All Call, he said, Hey, he's never

  320. lost a battle.

  321. Every battle he's ever fought, he's won.

  322. In Psalm chapter fifty one, starting in verse ten, and says,

  323. creating me a clean heart, O God, and renew a

  324. steadfast spirit within me, do not cast me away from

  325. your presence, and do not take.

  326. Your Holy spirit from me. What a prayer?

  327. What just that that part of the Psalm. What an

  328. incredible moment of of clarity. King David Is is talking

  329. to the Lord, and he says, hey, your spirit is

  330. everything to me. Don't don't don't don't take your don't

  331. take your spirit from you. Listen, you could take everything else.

  332. You can take my money, you can take my robes,

  333. you can take my cars. You could take then, you

  334. can take my fishing poles, you can take my dear rifle.

  335. You can do whatever you will. You can take all

  336. those things. Hold on, Georgia fans, we.

  337. Can have a losing season. Just don't just don't take

  338. your spirit from me. Wow.

  339. Now the spirit literally let Jesus in the wildern into

  340. the wilderness. But he says, listen, don't take your spirit

  341. from me, because your spirit's everything.

  342. Your presence is everything, because there's.

  343. Something about it that, even when things are hard, it

  344. just seems better. Do not cast me away from your presence,

  345. and do not take your spirit from me.

  346. Verse twelve.

  347. Here's where joy comes from. The way you get it

  348. is you just do you and you help others along

  349. the way, But this is where it comes from. Restore

  350. to me the joy of your salvation. Restore to me

  351. the joy of your salvation, and uphold me.

  352. By your generous spirit.

  353. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners shall

  354. be converted to you. He said, Hey, restore to me

  355. the joy of your salvation. See, I had this moment

  356. where I thought it was mine. I had this moment

  357. where I thought it belonged to me, But it's your salvation.

  358. It saved me, but it belongs to you. It pulled

  359. me out. But you're holding the rope, and I want

  360. you to restore unto me the joy of my salvation.

  361. That moment I want you to think back for some

  362. of y else got to think back a long time. Some

  363. of y'all been saved a long time and some of

  364. y'all are just old.

  365. Come on to that. Can you remember that day?

  366. That day you prayed that prayer and the blood of

  367. Jesus washed your sin away? And it was like, listen,

  368. I have people I almost I would say seventy percent

  369. of people describe it this way. I felt like a

  370. million pounds were lifted off my shoulders. But you know,

  371. you're not carrying sin. Jesus carried sin. What happened is

  372. you were infused with joy. And joy is the equilibrium.

  373. It balances the pressure on the inside to match the

  374. pressure on the outside, so that you don't know there's pressure.

  375. And he said, restore unto me that moment, restoring to

  376. me the.

  377. Joy of your salvation.

  378. And then I'm gonna teach transgressors your ways, and listen,

  379. lost people.

  380. Are gonna be converted. Sinners are gonna be converted.

  381. Because I don't look like everybody else looks when they

  382. go through stuff.

  383. And my life becomes.

  384. A testimony, and my life becomes a sermon that people

  385. see each and every day. My goodness, my goodness, if

  386. if I can live a life where I go through

  387. the same things everybody at work it's going through.

  388. Come on, now, show of hands.

  389. Maybe your boss told say, how many people think you're

  390. overworking underpaid? I better put my hand down boards here,

  391. I mean right, I mean we get that feeling. How

  392. many of you feel unappreciated by the people that you

  393. do the most for? Oh my Andy, did you see

  394. her hand go up just pointing that out for you there,

  395. pal flowers on the way home.

  396. We all feel those things.

  397. There is nothing that happens to us that's not common demand.

  398. But if we handle it different than everybody else handles it.

  399. If everybody knows my kids have lost their mind and

  400. are driving me crazy, and just like their kids are,

  401. but I don't let it affect me the way it

  402. affects them. There is a testimony, and they begin to

  403. see something on the inside of you that's not on

  404. the inside of them, and they're drawn to it.

  405. Come on, somebody for the single people.

  406. If you're approaching singleness in a different way and everybody else,

  407. and you're not out there just chasing every single moment

  408. of intimacy that you can find, but you're handling it different.

  409. You're just sitting back waiting on Jesus. Come on now.

  410. People look and say, why how can you be so

  411. peace filled? How can you handle things so differently? Because

  412. the joy of the Lord is my strength. I don't

  413. need external inputs when the balance is right on the inside. Clay,

  414. you guys can come and get ready, he said, restore

  415. unto me.

  416. The joy of your salvation. I believe the reality.

  417. Is that maybe some people in this room have lost

  418. the joy of your salvation. Not your salvation, not your salvation,

  419. but the joy of it, that first love feeling. Listen,

  420. I just been married twenty eight years. I remember, listen,

  421. I remember the very first time I ever saw my wife.

  422. We were registering for classes at that time at Gainesville

  423. Junior College a long time ago, and she walked in.

  424. I was like, I was like that cartoon wanng you

  425. in my eyes, It's like, that's the most beautiful woman

  426. I've ever seen in my life. My heart started beating fast,

  427. and sweat broke out on my head. And she had

  428. somewhere to be and she was trying to register. But

  429. her last name star with T. My last name starts

  430. with S. So I'm one alphabet in front, I'm one

  431. letter in front of her right, And it wasn't tease

  432. time to be there yet. It was S's time to

  433. be there yet, and they said, well you got to

  434. wait until your time. I'd never seen her before my life,

  435. never said a word to her. And I'm just standing

  436. in line, you know. She cut in front of me, right.

  437. Usually I get mad about that. And I remember yelling,

  438. just let the girl register for classes.

  439. It's one letter. And for some reason this sounded like

  440. a thing that made sense in my mind.

  441. I said, And it's a consonant too, I guess I

  442. would just wanted people to know I knew the difference

  443. between Bibles and consonants.

  444. I don't know.

  445. And she turned around to look kind of blushed red,

  446. and I was just right then, I was like, who

  447. that's like.

  448. That's the target.

  449. Like if I didn't find somebody as good as her,

  450. I never knew it was going to be her. The

  451. Lord orchestrated all that years later, that first love feeling

  452. that just I don't care if I get and this

  453. is really what I thought. I don't got care if

  454. I get kicked out of college.

  455. Look at her, I just dig a ditch. I was

  456. look at her, fall in love with that Jesus.

  457. Of your salvation, that moment where you just knew everything

  458. was gonna be okay, and there's no shame and saying

  459. I want I want my joy back. I want the

  460. joy of my salvation back. There's no shame in that whatsoever.

  461. In just a minute, I'm gonna count to three, and

  462. if that's you, if you want the joy of your salvation.

  463. Back, I want you to come, and we want.

  464. To pray for you. I know, y'all we pray a

  465. lot at this church, yes we do. But maybe you're

  466. here and you've never.

  467. Trusted Jesus as your savior.

  468. Be I want to speak plainly to you, not even

  469. about eternity, because eternity is going to be bad for you.

  470. There's a place called heaven, there's a place called hell,

  471. and without Jesus, there's only one destination.

  472. That's hell.

  473. But I want to talk to you about tomorrow. If

  474. you wake up and open your eyes, there is no

  475. hope for your pressure to be equalized, because joy only

  476. comes from the Lord, and it's the only equalizer. I mean,

  477. we can look ahead towards eternity, or you can look

  478. towards tomorrow when you know you've got to go back

  479. to your job where all those people are are.

  480. They get on your nerves. And your boss is an

  481. old curmudgeon that just's.

  482. Under your skin so far that it's like a tattoo,

  483. and he just can't get rid of him. Come on, somebody,

  484. If you find the Lord today, he can give you

  485. the joy to overcome and equalize that pressure tomorrow.

  486. The choice is up to you.

  487. If you're here today and you want to accept Jesus

  488. as your Lord and savior, you want to give him

  489. your life and receive that joy story. I'm gonna count

  490. to three. When I get to three, if that's you,

  491. I want you to come to our alter team will

  492. come and get ready. Everybody else's stand on the count

  493. of three. If you're here today and you say, hey,

  494. I need Jesus, I want Jesus to save me.

  495. Or if you're here and you know.

  496. You're saved, but you want the joy of your salvation back,

  497. life is beat it out on you the day you

  498. want it back. On the count of three, I want

  499. you to step out and move now.

  500. Listen. I want to guarantee you.

  501. If you're here and you're about to step out for

  502. the very first time, give your life to everybody here

  503. is cheering for you. There's no condemnation in coming to

  504. this place not being saved. That's why we do what

  505. we do. On the count of three, I want that

  506. joy right, I need Jesus. The count of three, I

  507. want you to step out and move Don't look around,

  508. just step out and move one, two, three, step out

  509. and move right now, come on,
