House of Prayer - Week 4

Encourage you to keep praying and appropriately. We are wrapping

up our series this morning on prayer. This is the

last Sunday of House of Prayer. So you might have

noticed over the past few weeks the prayer wall, which

is now fully in place where it's going to remain.

But I hope you guys have been using that.

I hope you've been praying the past twenty one days

of prayer. It has been our church wide effort to

pray together. I hope you have been enjoying that. I

hope that you have been praying. I hope you've not

just been hearing a lot about prayer. I hope you've

been doing it. I'll admit I'm a little sad that

it's over. I've gotten at the beginning, I was really

not excited about getting up early and being here and

starting a song at seven am every weekday. And listen,

Pastor Cathy was here, Pastor Fred's been here, Connie's been here. Look,

there have been some weird notes come out of my

mouth that early in the morning. So but I'll tell

you this, it has been a powerful, powerful time of prayer.

And I believe that that powerful things happen when we

put order to our lives like that. When we commit

to a time period to press in and pray and

make it part of our schedule. God does some special

things and it's been a wonderful time. I believe those

things help us get closer to God. I believe it's

so important that we do that. So I hope you've

been praying. And over the last three weeks, we've talked

about prayer strategies. We've talked about what prayer really is,

We've talked about prayer models. We had the town hall

where you guys asked some incredible questions about prayer. Pastor

Gray was really awesome and answering a lot of those.

He's just a prayer he's anointed to pray, I mean,

so it is really cool that we've been able to

hear from all these different perspectives. This series has been

really good for me. I hope it's been for you.

And last week Chief challenge just about to start with forgiveness,

to root out that bitterness when we pray, that we

might start with a clean slate, that we might remain

persistent and continue to pray, and the value of righteousness

when it comes to communicating with God, we have to

understand righteousness. And even with all that, though, I just

have a hunch that maybe perhaps maybe you're like me

and you still struggle with prayer. Like I know that's

hard to believe, but I struggle with prayer, okay, because

the enemy hates it when you talk to God. The

world doesn't like it when you talk to God. To

let them tell you what they hate. Even more, the

enemy hates when you hear from God. Matter of fact,

he'll let you talk. But when you pray, when you

really pray, like we've been praying these past three weeks,

you start to hear from God and the enemy wants

to stop that. There's nothing God doesn't know. God knows everything,

so he'll the enemy.

Will allow you.

He'll allow you to pray and pray and say a

lot of things. But hearing from God that other part

of the communication, and it's it's a dial, it's two

way street, and that hearing from God is what's so powerful.

So I know that.

If you're like me, you're probably still struggling a little

bit with maybe establishing a prayer life that you you

would consider to be successful, or maybe you look at

scripture and think that would be successful.

I think some of us we find ourselves weary.

It's hard to keep up every single day that schedule

of prayer.

Maybe for other others it's it's.

A maybe we think it's a lack of skill, like

I have to reach a certain I got to reach

a certain level in my discipleship before I can pray

on a daily basis. Maybe other others, we we think

maybe it's we're not worthy.

Have you ever felt like that?

And then maybe how can I talk to the creator

of the universe when I've done what I've done, when

I've been how I've been. I've struggled with that too.

So if if you're like me, maybe you're still struggling.

And I think there might be a root cause for that,

And I think for God has revealed it to me

in this time of study as I prepare for this message.

You see, we're conditioned to think about prayer in a

certain way, and we've worked hard these past three weeks,

past month to undo what those things we kind of

get embedded in our head about prayer, But we tend

to think about prayer like this. We pray and then

we receive. We pray and we get and that's true.

Scripture does back that up. But that's just one part

of prayer. It's not the whole picture. You see, Prayer

is not only about receiving nor and I want you

to hear this, nor is prayer just about doing.

And we can get into the mindset.

Where, well, I did pray today for some amount of time,

so it's done. I can check it off on my list.

Prayers not just about doing it.

It's not just about receiving, but prayer.

And we're gonna look at this today from scripture, prayer

can determine your very state of being.

In fact, it can.

It is so foundational, it can be the thing from

where everything else springs forth if we do it the

way God intended us to do it. Prayer, when when

it's done in the way Scripture teaches us, it changes us.

Consider those and I as I didn't I didn't know

that was going to happen this morning. But as I was,

I was thinking about people. You know, those people who

pray and they seem to always get what they pray for.

If you met those people, if you spend enough time

in a church, in any any good church, you know

those people who they pray or they're the people. They're

the person. Uh they someone always comes to them, Hey

can you pray for me? I want you to pray

for me because your prayers I know you got God

on speed dial.

You know you heard that phrase.

Or maybe you feel like your prayers get stuck in

the rafters. But their prayers just like shoot off like

a rocket to heaven. You know, those people, those people

that we they're the ones we want to pray for

us because we think they've got God's ear.

But you can too.

You see the people that the people we call prayer warriors,

people like Grandma Mary, the people we we we say

these things about. They seem like they always have successful prayers.

And the reason is they understand how to position their

lives that they might be in the will of God,

so that before they even say Father, they're already standing

in his will. They're already operating in his will. The

starting point of prayer is so important. Why are their

prayers so successful? Why do they seem okay with the

answers even when God says.

No, that's right.

Successful prayer it doesn't always mean we get what we

ask for. Successful prayer can can mean you hearing God

and say m and then you go yes, sir. Okay,

let's move on. That's a successful prayer could be a no.

But a lot of times we can't even hear that.

We don't even fully understand that because we're not positioned.

For successful prayer.

Let's look briefly, we're gonna go quick with these, okay,

conditions for successful prayer. We're gonna start with the first one,

which is repentance. Jeremy's got the scriptures up there. Second Chronicles,

chapter seven, verse fourteen. It says, if my people who

are called by my name humble themselves and pray and

seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then

I will hear them from heaven and will forgive their

sin and heal their land.

That's the word of God. It's easy to get stuck here. See.

We think that because we prayed for forgiveness at some

point in our lives, that maybe we no longer need

to repent. But repentance is a daily practice, at.

Least if you're like me, it's probably more like hourly.

Because I mess things up, I do it wrong, I

hurt people's feelings, I don't say the right things. Those

things happen to me hourly, if not more frequently. Repentance

should be continual. Repentance is a daily practice because failure

is a daily occurrence.

Our sin, nature, our world. They all pull us.

In a direction opposite of God, which means I have

to be mindful and put myself back in the direction

of God. And repentance is the is the key to

doing that. See, we don't repent to make God move.

Don't force his hand by repenting. Okay, God, I repent it.

Now you have to move. No, we repent to make

way in our lives for our Holy God to come

and work in us the way he already wants to.

He already wants.

To work in you.

The block a lot of times there. The disconnect there

is because we have not made way for him. And

I'll tell you this, it's difficult to leave our sin

unaddressed when we maintain a consistent prayer life, because you

have to start with repentance.

You know, those sins that.

Kind of just drag on, we seem like we can't

get rid of them. It's because we haven't made way

for God. God wants us to pray. In fact, he's

waiting for you to pray. Not because He requires words

before he distributes blessings.

Hang with me.

Listen, Prayer is not transactional. It's not a transaction. It's

not a okay, God, I prayed, now, blessing please. It's

not pressing the button and getting the blessing. Prayers not transactional.

Prayer is transformational.

Hang with me.

Next condition for successful prayer Jeremiah twenty nine. We're gonna

start in verse twelve. You so you thought we were

going to eleven. That's the one we all know, right,

But let's read twelve and thirteen says, then you will

call upon me and come and pray to me, and

I will hear you. Verse thirteen you will seek me

and find me when keyword you seek me with all

your heart. You see, prayer is not transactional. But prayer

is also not performative if we don't put our whole

hearts and therefore by extension. Remember that Hebrew word is

heart and mind. That's connected. That's one thing. If we

don't put our hearts and minds into prayer, then we're

just babbling.

It's just empty words. It's just wishful thinking.

And notice how God says we will find him. We

will find him. God knows where you are. God knows

right where, and that might be a revelation for you.

But God knows right where you are all the time.

What prayer does is it helps us find him. We

get that backwards a lot because God is everywhere. God's

omni present right. But a lot of times we don't.

Even though he's right here, I don't find him because

I got something in the way. There's something blocking my eyes. Spiritually,

I can't. I don't know that he's there. Even though

he is, we will find him. Prayer doesn't reveal us

to him. It reveals him to us. Prayer shapes. If

you're taking notes, you're tweeting, or whatever they call it. Now,

I want you to remember this. If you remember nothing

else from this a general remember this, Prayer shapes the

heart of man far more than it moves the heart

of God. The Father is already for you. He's already

fighting for you. He already loves you. We're not praying

to get him to love me more. I'm not praying

to get him to move on my behalf more. He

already wants to do that. Prayer moves me. Prayer changes

me so that I can recognize him and follow him fully.

Our next condition for successful prayer is faith. Mark chapter eleven,

verse twenty four. Chief was Chief has mentioned this too,

but says, therefore, I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer,

believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.

I want you to put a pen right there, because

we're coming back to faith when we close. Okay, put

a pin right there. We spend some extra time on faith.

That's the core of our message today. Our next condition

for successful prayer number four righteousness. This one Chief covered

last week James chapter five, verse sixteen. Therefore, confess your

sins to one another and pray for one another that

you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person

has great power as it is working. Remember, it starts

with forgiveness. We root out the bitterness. It continues with

understanding how Christ has given us his righteousness. We could

not do it without him. But Christ has given us

his righteousness that we might boldly approach the throne of

God and speak directly to him. The last condition, number

five is obedience. This is the tough one. Repentance is

pretty tough, but obedience this is my chink in the armor.

Right here, First, John chapter three, verse twenty two says,

and whatever we ask, we receive from him because keyword,

we keep his commandments and do what pleases him. One

John chapter five, verse fourteen, similar thing. And this is

the confidence that we have toward him that if we

ask anything according to his will, he hears us. Do

you hear John's words, you hear the word of God

here according to his will he hears us. So to

be clear, again, God's no genie, right. He doesn't have

a set number of wishes for your life. And you

get your wishes. You can't wish for more wishes. It's

not like that. God's not a genie. But when we

are within the will of God, walking in step with

his spirit, doing the things He's called us to do,

he promises to hear us and work on our behalf.

Again.

Prayers not transactional, it's transformational. Well right here, we see

it as relational. Think about it. Any earthly parent. When

we're pleased with the actions of our children, we're more inclined.

To reward them. Now, I don't look at.

My son and daughter and say, hey, if you're at right,

I'll give you this. It's not a reward system, but

when the grades are up, when the instructions are being followed,

when we're getting along with our siblings, when all those

things are clicking, when we're respectful, when we're doing what

we're supposed to do, it's a lot easier for me

to go, hey, guys, jump in the car, let's go

to McDonald's and let's get ice cream. When they're not

following instructions, when they're not being respectful, when they're not

doing what they're supposed to do, what we ain't going

to McDonald's. Now, listen to me, hear me. That's a

relational thing. It's not a transaction. Every time they do

something right, I don't take them to McDonald's.

But when they are in a.

Season of doing well, I find joy in giving them

what they want.

Where does that come from? God? God does that with you.

He's not telling you.

He's not telling you to do these things and then

he'll give you what you need.

He's going to give you what you need.

But when you start doing what he's told you to do,

that you start to get things on top of your need.

Extra blessing.

Because we are close to him, and when you are

close and walking with him and he you have that

positive relationship. We just get blessings. It's a word of God,

not me. But notice these five things. Repentance, wholeheartedness, faith, righteousness, obedience.

Notice how this forces you to change the way you live.

It's easy to be like, Okay, I'm getting up early,

I'm gonna pray if I got to make sure these

five things are clicking in my life.

That forces me to change my schedule, That forces me

to change my actions, That forces me to change my words,

the way I think and interact with other people. No

longer is prayer vain repetition. No longer is it just

beating your head against the wall trying to break through.

No longer is prayer just reduced to you speaking your

desires out to God. Instead, prayer is now the driving.

Force of your life.

Because I gotta be I gotta be clean, I gotta repent.

I gotta do this with my whole heart and with

my whole mind. That means I can't let things into

my heart and mind that will get me off track here.

I can't leave my sin on address. I have to repent,

so I can't go on sinning. I have to I

have to have faith, so I gotta gather with other believers.

I gotta get there. I gotta worship, I gotta I

gotta do those things so my faith would increase. I

have to understand Jesus, to understand his righteousness applied.

To me, so that means I gotta be closer to him.

That means I gotta read more word, I gotta pray more.

I gotta worship more so that I understand that. And

then I have to hear from God, which means I

have to get quiet enough so I can hear him.

And then I have to obey him. That changes your life.

That's not a twenty one day campaign. That is your

whole life. And yet we can find ourselves still struggling

to establish such order. You say, Pastor, you understand it's

chaos in my life. Me too, Pastor, you don't understand

this happened. This happened.

Yeah, yeah, But if you have this in place, come

what may, and you will stay the course.

When you are this close, when you're this tight with God,

he's your captain.

The ship's not going down. Captains go down with their ship.

God doesn't lose, So the ship's not going down, because

then he would have to go with it.

This puts you right there with him. And look, I

don't mean to.

I don't mean to say this, because what I think

is this is a crisis of faith, is what it

really comes down to. That's why I said put a

pen in faith, because we're coming back right now. I

think this is a crisis of faith. And you say, oh, pastor, no, no, no,

I believe That's not what I mean.

I think it's a crisis of faith. We don't. It's

not the way you might assume.

I don't mean to say that your prayers are not

working because you don't have enough faith. You've heard, I'm

sure you've heard some church leaders, pastors, people preach that

the reason you're not getting what you need is not

because you can't muster enough faith. That's not what I'm

trying to say. There's no magic threshold of faith. Okay,

once you get a hundred faith, then you unlock healing.

Once you get one hundred and fifty faith, you unlock blessing,

once you get two hundred. It's just money's just flowing

out of every orifice. It's not a magic threshold of faith.

You're not punished for having Oh, I have three faith

faith the size of a mustard seed moves mountains. It's

not about a magic threshold of faith. Nor is there

a certain amount of praying that's going to automatically grant

you what you're asking for. Well, God, I was there

all twenty one days of prayer. I didn't get what

I asked for. Maybe you're not asking for the right thing.

The goal of that was to get close to God.

Then I can understand what I ought to be asking

for because I'm in his will.

See our crisis of faith, it typically has to do

with the way we view and think about God.

For one reason or another, we just can't let go

of our lives enough to fully trust Him. And then

we stopped praying. But we don't stop praying because we

don't get what we need. You might think that's what

you've done, but you we don't stop praying because we

asked and it didn't come to pass. We stop praying

because we forget who we are, because we've forgotten who

we're talking to.

Oh, it's about to happen. I hope you're ready.

I believe this to be the case because it's in

scripture all throughout. You can just basically if you'll just

open and start reading some narrative in your scripture. If

just you start reading a story, you'll probably find this

happening where people forget who they are because they forget

who God is. You can't understand yourself without understanding him.

At least knowing him.

Let's read two more passages to inform our minds so

that we can believe Matthew Chapter six. Starting in verse

twenty five, Jesus says, Therefore, I tell you, do not

be anxious about your life, what you will eat, or

what you will drink, nor about your body what you

will put on. Is life not more than food, in

the body more than clothing.

Look at the birds of the air.

They neither sow, nor reap, nor gather into barns, and

yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Hear the words of

our Lord right here. Are you not of more value

than they? And why are you anxious about clothing? I'm

sorry Verse twenty seven. And which of you, by being anxious,

can add a single hour to his span of life?

Actually you're doing the opposite Verse twenty eight. And why

are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the

field and how they.

Grow, they neither toil nor spin.

Yet, I tell you, even Solomon, in all his glory,

was not a red like one of these Verse thirty

But if God so close the grass of the field,

which today is alive, and tomorrow thrown into the oven,

will he not much more clothe you? Owe you a

little faith. Therefore, do not be anxious saying what shall

we eat, or what shall we drink? Or what shall

we wear? For the gentile sink after all these things,

and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

Who verse thirty three.

But seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness,

and all these things will be added to you. Therefore,

do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be

anxious for itself sufficient, for the day is its own trouble.

I love that passage. I love thirty three. I love

thirty four. I remember as a teenager writing verse thirty

four in my journal every day so that I would

not worry about the next day. It's an often quoted passage. Actually,

we've been singing verse thirty three. I don't know if

you notice the song of the month. The Lord will

provide that bridge. Seek first, the sext and it's treasures

and everything else. It will be added. All that I'm needing,

I know the Lord will provide. It comes from right here.

Jesus is teaching directly about faith, about anxiety, about worry

and our misplaced attention. And what we usually get out

of this passage is you need to seek the Kingdom harder.

That's what we usually get. You need to do more.

You need to do better and your seeking or maybe

we get do more for God and then everything else

will be taken care of. And those are those are

not bad takeaways. I think that's there too, that we

ought to be focused and not worry about things, so

God will handle those things while we work for him.

But what I really want you to notice today is

how God is speaking about you.

You are of utmost value to God.

You whoever, if you're not listening in this present moment

I'm talking to you, you are of utmost value to God.

Somebody just now said, ah, me, though you don't know

what I've done pastor you don't know what I did

last night, you don't know what happened this week, you

don't know what I walked in here with, you are

of utmost value to God. People matter more to God

than any other piece of creation. That's not pride that scripture.

God is far more interested in us than he is

our requests. He's more concerned with your heart more than

your situation.

Hear me. That is, it's tough.

When you're in the middle of the storm and you're

praying and you're asking God to bring you through the storm,

and God is saying, what about you, I'm not really

worried about the storm.

Where is your heart?

The storm will pass and there will be another one,

probably bigger.

I don't know.

They seem to do that because I'm not interested in

the storm. He's interested in you. And it's not that

he just doesn't care about what happens. He does care

about what happens to you. You can't care about you

and not care about what happens to you, and he doesn't.

It's not because he's cruel that he doesn't care as

much about our situations.

It's because of this.

He knows if you are close to him, your temporary

circumstances matter far less.

Because He's not temporary. He's eternal.

When we stop doing the things that God commands us

to stop doing, you'll probably find you had a lot

of time on your hands. I did when I stopped worrying,

when I stopped stressing out over everything, when I stopped

trying to do it on my own, trying to make

plans so that I don't hit that pitfall instead of

how can I get closer to the King? Because the

King doesn't fall in any of those pits. He doesn't

lead me to those pits, leads me not into temptation.

And God tells us exactly how to fill the space

when we stop doing the things he tells us to

stop doing.

You fill the space with prayer. So if maybe you

were thinking, I don't.

Know, pastor, how am I gonna get How am I

gonna put all those things into my life? Those five things?

How am I gonna make that work? How I'm gonna

order my life? Stop doing what God's telling you to

stop doing, and then you're gonna be like, what do

I fill my schedule with? Turns out I was worrying

for about twelve hours a day, and all of a sudden,

I'm free.

I have nothing on the replace it with prayer.

If you seek the things that matter, the eternal things

of God, his kingdom, his righteousness, and Remember, you can't

get righteousness without Christ. When you seek those eternal things,

the temporary things will no longer even be big enough

to occupy your mind. If I have eternity on my mind,

what is time? If I have eternity on my mind,

what is this current situation that will pass? But to

fully understand how to live this way, we have to

have a correct view of God. I want to look

at one more parable. As the band gets ready, this

is actually where I started when I was preparing Luke

chapter eighteen, starting in verse one, and he told them

a parable to the effect that they ought always to

pray and not lose heart. He said, in a certain city,

there was a judge who neither feared God nor respected man.

And there was a widow in that city who kept

coming to him, saying, give me justice against my adversary.

For a while he refused, But afterward he said to himself,

though I neither fear God nor respect man, Yet, because

this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice

so that she will not beat me down by her

continual coming.

And the Lord said, hear what the unrighteous judge says verse.

Seven, And will God not give justice to his elect

who cried to him day and night. Will he delay

long over them? I tell you he will give justice,

justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the son of Man comes,

will he find faith on the earth. You see the

widow In this parable, Jesus is telling she was able

to get her need met by perseverance. We talked a

bit about that last week, by persistence, by continuing to pray,

continuing to ask. But in this parable, that unjust judge,

he's not a God fearing man, he's a I mean,

by all accounts, we would say this was an evil person,

somebody against God and didn't respect people.

And this unjust.

Judge, he was not moved by her circumstance. Why would

an unjust judge be moved by a need for justice?

He doesn't care about justice, didn't care about doing the

right thing. He didn't have compassion on her. He was

moved by her perseverance. He had no reason to give

her what she asked for other than the fact.

That she just would not stop.

And then Jesus contrasts God with this unjust judge, and

he explains that God will quickly answer those that he

has a relationship with don't get hung up on elect Okay,

don't get hung up, don't get don't.

Get weird about it.

Listen the elect of God and those who have a

relationship with God, those he has saved and redeemed, those

he desires to bring justice. If the unrighteous judge, if

the unjust judge was moved by persistence, how much more

is your loving father?

How much more is your loving father who wants you

to pray all the time, He wants you to ask

all the time, He wants you to toil day and night,

crying out to him, he wants to be that close

to you that it's all the time.

How much more would a kind, loving, righteous God?

How much more would he answer? See? I think we

we get.

Mixed up because we forget who we are, Then we

forget who we're talking to. I love the way one

of our early church fathers put it. Augustine of Hippo said,

if then with the most unjust judge, the perseverance of

the suppliant at length prevailed. And I was very fancy

English at length prevailed even to the fulfillment of her desire.

How much more.

Confident ought they to feel, who cease not.

To pray to God, the fountain of justice and mercy.

And so it follows.

And the Lord said, hear what our Lord speaks of

this perfect faith, which is found seldom on the earth.

See how full the Church of God is. Were there

no faith, who would enter? Were there perfect faith, who

would not move mountains? Our Lord adds us to show

that when faith fails, prayer dies. In order to pray,

then we must have faith, and that our faith fail

not we must pray. Faith pours forth prayer, and the

pouring forth of the heart and prayer gives steadfastness to faith.

See cycle, the cycle of having faith, praying that produces faith.

Hear me, don't let the lights bug you. I'm telling

you something right now, This right here is the reason

it has been the toughest we have had a long time.

I don't know that. I don't think that's that's nobody's fault.

That's the devil doesn't want you to get this church.

I'm telling you.

Because if you can get this cycle of faith to prayer,

that produces faith, that produces prayer, you.

Will be so ablaze.

For Jesus that it will tear a hole through the

strongholds in people's lives because it will bust back the

gates of darkness.

If we can.

Understand this cycle, if we know who we are, who

we're praying to, our prayers and therefore our lives, they

become effective and powerful. And that's who you're called to be,

effective and powerful kingdom citizens, the children of God. When

you position your life, use those five things. Position plus

perseverance that equals powerful prayer.

Unless you have any doubt left, let.

Me close with this from these encouraging words from Paul

and then Colossians chapter one, because I think.

There are still some of us.

That are like, Ah, I don't know about me, Pastor,

I'm really I'm trying hard to break that off you.

I think we need to call in the Holy Spirit

to break that off.

Colausus chapter one, Verse one one.

Hear this in your heart and receive it and pray

like you're a child of God. And you who were

once alienated and hostile in mind doing evil deeds as

all of us, he has now reconciled in his body

of flesh by his death in order to present you

holy and blameless and above reproach before him.

If you indeed continue in the faith, stable and steadfast,

not shifting from the hope of the gospel that you

have heard, which has been proclaimed in all creation under heaven,

and of which I Paul became a minister, which I

Clay became a minister. If you continue in the faith,

stable in steadfast, if our alter team would come, Let's

get ready to pray, because I can't think of anything

better to do after a message like this than to pray.

So I want you to take what we learned.

I want you to start right here, right now, in

these next few moments.

Let's go ahead and take what God has spoken to us.

Let's put it into practice. Whether you come to the front,

where you pray, where you're at, it doesn't matter as

long as you're praying.

If we would continue in the faith, meaning we pray

produces faith produces prayer produces faith.

If we continue, we can rest.

We can rest knowing.

That God has presented us holy and blameless and above reproach.

We are saved. So I want you to take some time.

As Haley leads this song, we're gonna have communion to end,

but I want you to take these next few these

next five six minutes, as we sing about the blood

of Jesus as we can or.

What he has done for us. Just as Paul said,

as we think.

About how to improve our prayer lives, to order our

life around prayer rather than adding it to our schedule,

we should have press this morning.

If you'd stand with.

Me, I'm telling you, man, if we can get this church,

if we can understand this, we can do this. Not

only will the things you're struggling with begin to break,
