  1. What's his name? Amen? Amen, and amen, somebody give the

  2. Lord a handclap.

  3. It's good to be back with everybody this week, and

  4. we're going to be moving into a new series today

  5. called The Greater Work. We want to talk about over

  6. the next few weeks. We're going to talk about prayer.

  7. But I want to refocus in a maybe a different concept,

  8. a different way than we, uh than we think about

  9. prayer because most of us spend, if not all, a

  10. majority of our prayer lives asking God for something.

  11. Let me say that again. Maybe you, maybe, maybe that's

  12. not you, but we spend.

  13. Most of our prayer lives asking God for something, and

  14. we think that's what prayer is. But the reality is

  15. that's not. That's only a portion, a very small portion

  16. of prayer. Because even even when we get down to

  17. the prayer, to the bare.

  18. Tax of it, God already knows owes our.

  19. Needs before we present them to him. He doesn't even really.

  20. Need you to bring your need.

  21. He already knows your need, and he's already promised to

  22. provide your need.

  23. Let me say that again.

  24. He's already promised to provide your need. He's already promised

  25. that prayer is communication with God.

  26. It's that constant contact.

  27. Where we talk to God, where we receive from God,

  28. and we have that open line of communication. The apostle

  29. Paul says this. He says, listen, pray without cease, pray

  30. without stopping. Always be in a manner of prayer. And

  31. if we will always be in a posture of prayer

  32. in our lives, it takes care of some.

  33. Of the other crazy stuff that we do too.

  34. Amen, if you're constantly understanding that, you've got to open

  35. line with God, just the if you had.

  36. Jesus on speedakerphone all the.

  37. Time, you had it tucked in your pocket, you probably

  38. wouldn't say some of the things you say to some

  39. of the people you say them to. Amen, if you

  40. really thought Jesus was listening. And the reality is he is.

  41. It's an open line of communication. But we're talking about

  42. intentionality in our communication with the Lord. So if you

  43. got a Bible, go to Luke chapter twenty two. Luke

  44. chapter twenty two, we're going to start reading in verse

  45. thirty nine. Luke twenty two thirty nine, it says, coming out,

  46. he went to the Mount of Olives as he was accustomed,

  47. and his disciples also followed him. When he came to

  48. the place, he said to them, pray that you may

  49. not enter into temptation. Let me stop right here and

  50. give you the backdrop of what's happening.

  51. So this is Jesus.

  52. He's moving into the garden of Gasseimine. He has been

  53. with his closest ministry partners, with those disciples. He's been

  54. there with them. They've just taken communion together. He's given

  55. great revelation in that place. And now they've headed out

  56. to the place of prayer. And we know that he

  57. is just soon to be arrested. He's soon to be

  58. beaten beyond human recognition. He's about to be spit on.

  59. He's about to be mocked. He's about to be swung

  60. from a cross and shed his blood for the remission

  61. of our sins and endure a painful, painful death so

  62. that we could be reunited with a holy God. He's

  63. about to go through something that most of us will

  64. never experience. And now we find him in the place

  65. of prayer Verse forty one. And he was withdrawn from

  66. them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and prayed, saying, Father,

  67. if it's your will, take this cup away from me. Nevertheless,

  68. not my will, but your will be done. Then an

  69. angel appeared to him from heaven, strengthening him, and being

  70. in agony, he prayed more earnestly. Then his sweat became

  71. like drops of blood falling down to the ground. When

  72. he rose up from prayer and had come to his disciples,

  73. he found them sleeping from sorrow. Then he said to them,

  74. why do you sleep? Rise and pray lest you enter

  75. in to temptation.

  76. Let's pray. Father.

  77. We thank you for your word. It's the only change

  78. agent on the face of the planet. And I pray

  79. right now that you do a work.

  80. So profound at the very fabric of our beag.

  81. That we look back to this moment and we say

  82. that is when my walk with Jesus changed, That I

  83. saw something deeper.

  84. That made me see things truer.

  85. Lord, I ask you to bless our time together in

  86. Jesus' name.

  87. Amen.

  88. You know, here's the thing that captured me. Although we're

  89. not going to spend a lot of time about it,

  90. is that that Jesus is praying.

  91. He knows what he's about to endure.

  92. Because he has a perfect picture of the future, and

  93. he prays and then the Angel visits him, strengthens and

  94. it says that.

  95. He prayed more earnestly.

  96. Now he had just said those words that scholars argue

  97. and fight about what they actually mean. We for a

  98. couple of thousand years we have argued over what was

  99. he really asking the Father to take away what liight

  100. ahead of him? Was he really asking his father to

  101. spare him from that? And we have argued this point

  102. of theology that it wasn't Jesus worried, it wasn't him

  103. actually asking for a reprieve, And and there's great, great

  104. energy and books and effort has gone into to.

  105. Looking at that question.

  106. But then it says that he prayed even more earnestly

  107. than that, And we don't know what he prayed even

  108. more earnestly than that. But the reality is is when

  109. we look at this picture of prayer, it's a much

  110. different picture of prayer than what most of us.

  111. Do on a daily basis.

  112. Amen, It's much different picture of that prayer than what

  113. we do when we Now, I lay me down to sleep,

  114. and I pray the Lord my soul to keep, And

  115. if I should die before I wake, I pray the

  116. Lord my soul to take You know, you don't need

  117. to pray that if you're saved, because to be absent

  118. from the body is to be present with the Lord.

  119. What we need to understand is how I.

  120. Come to him and I see significant change in my life,

  121. not in the situations around me, Because if I could

  122. respond differently, if I can respond differently than the world

  123. in the situation I find myself in, that attracts attention

  124. to Jesus. That becomes a testimony in a display of

  125. His power and his love and his grace.

  126. Not that I don't go through something, but.

  127. How I go through it. That's what paints a picture

  128. to the world. Prayers where God does the greater work

  129. in you so that he can do the right work

  130. through you. He does a greater work in you so

  131. that He can do the right work through you.

  132. See, when God truly.

  133. Does something in you, then he can get something right

  134. out of you.

  135. Most of the time.

  136. We are consumed with what should I do, what should

  137. I be?

  138. How should I this? How should I that?

  139. And it's not a natural spilling out of our relationship

  140. with Jesus because the things in us are not right.

  141. But when He can get things right in us. He

  142. doesn't worry about what comes through us if he can.

  143. Fix what's truly in us.

  144. Because out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth

  145. speaks or the life responds. Out of the abundance of

  146. the heart, what's in here is going to come out.

  147. And if this is right, then that will be right.

  148. When we read this, let me go back to verse

  149. thirty nine again. It says coming out, he went to

  150. the Mount of Olives as he was accustomed, and his

  151. disciples followed him. When he came to that place, he

  152. said to them, and listen to what he wants them

  153. to pray. He says, pray that you may not enter

  154. into temptation. Prayer is the workshop where formation happens. He said, listen,

  155. here's what I want you to pray. I don't want

  156. you to pray that my life is spared. I don't

  157. want you to pray about who's the greatest. I don't

  158. want you to pray about all of those things. What

  159. I want you to pray about is that you would

  160. not succumb or fall into temptation, not that you wouldn't

  161. be tempted, not that you wouldn't have an opportunity to

  162. make the wrong choice, but that you would pray that

  163. when the opportunity comes, you make the right choice. He says,

  164. let's fix our hearts on holiness.

  165. I want you to.

  166. Pray that you so clearly see the image of the

  167. Father that sin repulses you, that those things that once

  168. drew you, that those things that once enticed you, that

  169. you have disdain for those things that I like to

  170. say this way, I'd.

  171. Rather eat dirt than sin.

  172. That those things they're not appealing to me because my

  173. heart is completely melded into the heart of the Father.

  174. Leonard Ravenhill used this great quote. He said, a sinning

  175. man will stop praying, and a praying man will stop sinning.

  176. Now listen, I preach this.

  177. I use that quote in a scripture a few years ago,

  178. and it stirred up more. I don't know why people

  179. got so mad. I don't know why people got mad.

  180. I didn't even it's not even my quote. Come on, somebody,

  181. people like you can't just because I pray.

  182. I don't see it.

  183. No, it's the spirit of this thing. I don't want

  184. you to leave here and think all I need to

  185. do to be like Jesus says, pray every day. What

  186. He's saying is that the more I'm conformed into the

  187. image of God, the more time I spend in the

  188. presence of holiness, the more time I climb in the

  189. lap of the Father and I start smelling like him.

  190. The more I want to look like the world and

  191. have the things of the world and be the things

  192. of the world.

  193. I want more of Him.

  194. So that means I distance myself from those things that create.

  195. Distance between me and Him.

  196. That's true formation. It's when we pray God to help

  197. me make the right decision. God, not fix my bad God,

  198. don't you don't have to fix my bad decisions. I

  199. just want you to keep me from making another bad one.

  200. I'm willing to I'm willing. I'm willing to walk through

  201. the consequences of what I walk through. But let me

  202. have my eyes fixed on You so that next time,

  203. so that as I onboard people into my journey and

  204. I invite them into my life, that.

  205. They see me make the right decision moving forward.

  206. See, prayer is about formation, not about getting something from God.

  207. Because if I get God, if I can clear up

  208. my belief system and get my heart right, my natural

  209. response to everything is a God response.

  210. So I stop needing and wanting, and I just experience

  211. because he's in control. Listen, Church, He's in control of everything.

  212. If you will let him.

  213. Have control, He's already moving and working. If you will

  214. take your hands off the staring wheel. You know, if

  215. I could sing, I would sing. I'd sing carry Underwood.

  216. Right now, a faster Clay is inviting me to I'll

  217. just let him have the will. I'm not gonna try

  218. to sing it.

  219. Amen.

  220. Prayer is not about getting God to align with your plans,

  221. but allowing your heart.

  222. To align with his.

  223. You know a lot of times we go do what

  224. we want to do and then we invite God into it.

  225. You know, we we we we see something good and

  226. we go do it and then we say, God, jump

  227. over here and bless it.

  228. God. I you you know, my.

  229. Heart, Lord, I just want to serve you, and I

  230. just want to I just want to lift your name up.

  231. I just want to make a name for you. So

  232. I'm gonna go do this. Lord, I'm gonna go do this,

  233. and I just want you to bless it. You know

  234. that that concept reminds me of of the Apostle Philip

  235. as he's leading this red Hot revival in Jerusalem, and

  236. people are getting saved and healed and set free. And

  237. the signs and signs and wonders are happening every time

  238. they get together in corporate groups, whether it's a house

  239. church or larger gatherings, and God speaks to him and

  240. he says, listen, I want you to go. I want

  241. you to go to the desert, and I want you

  242. to sit by the road and I just want you

  243. to wait. And Philip had to be thinking, No, God,

  244. what I'm thinking about is starting another early morning worship service.

  245. I'm you know, we need to go to two services

  246. because we've got.

  247. To get more people in the building.

  248. And then I need to hire a few more people,

  249. and I need to increase the staff, and uh, we've

  250. got to have new chairs and go ahead and invent

  251. air conditioning now, God, because it's hot and that now,

  252. see God, that's.

  253. What we need to be doing. Put it in your world. God, God, you.

  254. Know what I need to do is, uh, I need

  255. to become manager. So what I'm gonna do is I'm

  256. gonna make up a story about that guy and get

  257. him fired.

  258. Because I can run things better.

  259. And then, you know, if I have more money, I'm

  260. gonna give more to the church.

  261. So uh.

  262. But what you you don't realize is you're not ready

  263. for leadership. What you don't realize is you don't manage

  264. what you got and if you have more, it's.

  265. Gonna hurt you even worse.

  266. And when you take that management role and you haven't

  267. found those leadership skills, those people are going to crush

  268. you and break you.

  269. And you're going to turn.

  270. To some crutch other than Jesus to self medicate all

  271. the pressure that you find yourself under.

  272. And God is keeping you right where you're at.

  273. Because he loves you, not because he's mad at you,

  274. because more money doesn't always equal more life. Prayers not

  275. a back kiding God to align with your plans, but

  276. allowing your heart to align with his. In Luke, chapter

  277. twenty two, verse forty one, says that he was withdrawn

  278. from them about.

  279. A stone's throw.

  280. He knelt down and prayed, saying, Father, if it's your will,

  281. take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not my will,

  282. but yours be done.

  283. Jesus is wrestling with this whole thing.

  284. He doesn't want I can assure you even the Son

  285. of God walking in flesh does not want to endure

  286. what's about to happen. His flesh did not welcome what's

  287. about to happen. Now, the spirit part of him completely

  288. knew what was at stake. The spirit part of him

  289. completely knew, But he also knew that at the snap

  290. of his fingers, every knee would bow and every tongue

  291. would confess. He knew that with a scepter and with

  292. an iron fist, he could stand up and he could

  293. assume control and make everyone bow. But that wasn't the

  294. plan of the Father. And he said, here's the thing, God,

  295. I I want. I want if this is.

  296. Really your will.

  297. See he didn't say, he didn't say, not my will,

  298. but yours be done. First thing, he says, If this

  299. is really your will, I'm willing to do it.

  300. He said, if this is.

  301. Your will, I'm just double checking. I'm just double checking

  302. because I need my heart to line up with your

  303. heart so this is not as torturous as I know

  304. it's going to be. I need my heart in alignment

  305. with yours. And an angel the Lord shows up and

  306. comforts him, and then he really starts praying, and it

  307. says he prayed more earnestly, and.

  308. He laid out every.

  309. Every thought that he had, He laid out every other

  310. idea that could possibly work come on somebody, and he

  311. still came to the conclusion that the most important.

  312. Thing is for my heart to be aligned with your heart. Father,

  313. that if I can have.

  314. Spiritual alignment there, even though this is going to be horrendous,

  315. I'm going to get through it because I'll see your glory.

  316. That on the other side, something greater than the temporary

  317. pain and discomfort that I'm experiencing right now will be

  318. the payoff that there is something greater. I want you

  319. to know that no matter how hard things are right now,

  320. there's something greater. There is something greater, because you're built

  321. for more than.

  322. What is happening in your life right now.

  323. Alignment always brings an encounter with the new dimension of

  324. God's glory. He said, not my will, but yours be done.

  325. And then he prays more earnestly, and he gets up,

  326. and this is what he listened. He goes back to

  327. the disciples, and he looks at him and he says, hey,

  328. wake up, wake up, and pray that you not enter

  329. into temptation. He wakes them up. He says, pray the

  330. same thing I just told you to pray, only do

  331. it better this time. Only Stop saying your sorrowful.

  332. And falling asleep. This is what he says.

  333. Stop using your brokenness as an excuse to missing and

  334. counter with the Father. Stop using your limitations as an

  335. excuse to be changed by God. He says, Pray that

  336. you enter, not into temptation. Stop saying, well, you know,

  337. I'm stressed out God, so I just need four more twinkies.

  338. I don't even have twinkies in my house. I'm fat

  339. off potatoes and meat, chili and soup. He says, Hey,

  340. everybody has an excuse, but there's a remnant. There's there's

  341. a remnant that will push past it. There are a

  342. few who are so hungry for alignment that they will

  343. walk through the discomfort.

  344. Into glory.

  345. The greater work is transformation before assignment. Here's where we

  346. have gotten it Here's where we've gotten it wrong. Here's

  347. where the church has gotten it wrong. Is that we

  348. think you should just go and start doing. But the

  349. reality is is that it's important for you to see

  350. transformation and renewal before.

  351. You start doing. That hurts me so bad to say,

  352. because I.

  353. Need you to go do things. I need you to

  354. put your hand to the plow. But if you get formation,

  355. we don't need a program for you to do anything.

  356. We don't need a system for you to do anything,

  357. because you're just out there doing it. See, transformation is

  358. before the assignment. The Bible says in Psalm forty six,

  359. be still and know that I am God. He says,

  360. be still, get on your knees, in your closet and

  361. find out who I am. Because when you find out

  362. who I am, it transforms who you are. That there

  363. is no greater work than prayer itself. There is no

  364. greater work than the inward renewal that God wants to

  365. do in you and through you. There is no greater

  366. work than being shaped and molded into God's image so

  367. that we look a little more like him. You know

  368. one of the pasca. You guys can come and get ready.

  369. You know one of the most moving stories. And I'm

  370. not I'm not moved by sad stories. I'm moved by

  371. overwhelming overcoming odds. I can watch a sports movie where

  372. you know, the guy that was throwing twenty strikes out

  373. and I just cry like a baby. But sad stories

  374. really don't move me. But one of the most moving.

  375. Stories I've ever heard.

  376. It's the story how the hymn I Have Decided to

  377. Follow Jesus came about. It was written from by a

  378. missionary in India about a man who had found Christ

  379. and Christ transformed his life. And the elders of this

  380. tribe they were angry that he was preaching the gospel

  381. and people were being transformed, and they brought he and

  382. his family. They had tom kneel in front of this

  383. the entire village, and they told him, we need you

  384. to recant of your faith in Jesus. And he said,

  385. I'm not gonna do that. And they took his wife

  386. and they separated her from the group, and they said,

  387. if you don't recant, we're gonna kill your wife. And

  388. he looks at that leader and he says those words.

  389. He says, I have decided to follow Jesus.

  390. No turning back, No turning back. They killed his.

  391. Wife, they took his children, they separated him. They were screaming.

  392. He said, here's your chance, recant. Where are you going

  393. to kill your children? As his children were murdered, he

  394. looked into heaven and he said, though none go with me,

  395. still I will follow.

  396. And then he said, we're going to give you one

  397. more chance, and they put the blade to his throat

  398. and they said racan't.

  399. And the last words from this man's mouth were the

  400. world behind me, the cross before me. I have decided

  401. to follow Jesus.

  402. No turning back and listen.

  403. That sounds so awesome that in that moment he was

  404. able to make that declaration. But I want you to

  405. know that that kind of resilience is.

  406. Not formed in the moment.

  407. It's formed over years of silence and isolation, being formed

  408. and renewed by God. It's in the moments of isolation

  409. and obscurity where God so forms us on the inside

  410. that we trust him to the level that we can

  411. follow him like that.

  412. If we wonder why we bend our knee.

  413. At the slightest moment of inconsistency, it's because God is

  414. not through forming us. God is not really through.

  415. At the foundation of our being. He is not finished

  416. with us.

  417. We think we're a finished product, and then we've got

  418. it made, but we must spend more time with Him.

  419. And then when we're called on the carpet, when we

  420. have to stand and make a declaration of faith or

  421. our bodies respond in a moment of insecurity and fear

  422. and overwhelm, it stands up and says, I have decided

  423. to follow Jesus, no turning back, no turning back. And

  424. for some of you in this room, that sounded like

  425. a horrible thing, that that man would let his entire

  426. family die, and all he needed to do was recant.

  427. And some of you even thought if he just would,

  428. then he could go back home and he could tell

  429. Jesus he was sorry, and Jesus would take him back.

  430. And that's true.

  431. But what you don't understand was that the Lord so

  432. trusted him through those years of formation that he knew

  433. the result that would happen would be so.

  434. Overwhelming and bring so much life into darkness.

  435. Because as we hear the rest of the story that's

  436. not written in the song, it's the same leader of

  437. the village who executed him and his family were so

  438. overwhelmed by his dedication and loyalty to the Lord that

  439. he gave.

  440. His life to Jesus.

  441. And then he led the entire village to repent and

  442. turn their lives over to Jesus. And then a song

  443. was written that so shook the foundation of men through

  444. so many decades that thousands and thousands and thousands of

  445. people turned their life to the Lord because of a

  446. stand of man made born in those quiet moments of prayer.

  447. And if that sounds foreign to you, maybe you've never

  448. even truly met Jesus. You've never asked him to forgive

  449. you of your sins, you never ask him to be

  450. the lord of your life. But you want to be

  451. able to stand for something. Listen, you're never going to

  452. be You'll never live for anything until you find something

  453. you can die for. And if you're here today and

  454. you've never experienced Jesus, you've never asked him to forgive

  455. you of your sins and be the lord of your life.

  456. But today you feel something strange down at the heart

  457. level of who you are, the Holy Spirit drawing you.

  458. This is your moment with every head bowed and every

  459. eye closed. If you're here today and you want to

  460. invite Jesus into your life, you know you're far from him.

  461. You know that if you die today, you don't have

  462. the assurance of knowing and you would make it to heaven.

  463. And maybe you've.

  464. Been here for years, maybe you're serving on a team

  465. and then a group, but suddenly the Holy Spirit is

  466. awakened something and you know things are.

  467. Not right between you and the Lord.

  468. Or maybe this is your very first time and you've

  469. realized that things are not right between you and the Lord.

  470. This is your moment. So if you're here and you

  471. want to invite Jesus into.

  472. Your life, slip up your hand and say that's my

  473. pastor pray for me. I want to surrender my life

  474. to Jesus. Amen, I want things to be right when

  475. I stand in that moment of conflict. I want to say,

  476. no turning back, no turning back. I'm gonna wait just

  477. a moment. The Holy Spirit's moving. Just put your hand

  478. up and put it right back down. If that's you,

  479. I want to I want to turn my life over

  480. to Jesus. I want to repent of sin, those things

  481. that I've allowed to creep into my life. Amen, every

  482. eye open, every head looking around, everybody stand to your feet.

  483. As if you raised your hand.

  484. When you get down to the front, in just a moment,

  485. I need you to tell the person you're praying with

  486. that that you want to pray to receive Jesus. It's

  487. important that you that you tell them that, or they're

  488. going to pray for miracles, and I want you to.

  489. I want them to be able to pray the right.

  490. Prayer with you.

  491. But now, if you're hearing, you would say, Pastor, I

  492. want that resoluteness. I want that level of faith that

  493. shakes the world like that's story. I want my heart

  494. so aligned with the Father. But I need to overcome

  495. some obstacles. I need to overcome some fear. I need

  496. to overcome some shame and some guilt and maybe even

  497. some anger towards God. I need to get past some

  498. things so that I can step into that perfect alignment.

  499. If that's you, in just a moment, I'm going to

  500. count to three, because I believe there's a few world

  501. changers in this room. I believe there are some some

  502. world changers. I believe that God has given you the

  503. assignment to really shake things in this community and beyond.

  504. And if you want to step into that, this is

  505. for you. If you want to be that world changer.

  506. When I count to three, I want you to step

  507. out and move on our alter team to come. Unless

  508. you're planning on responding to the altar call, only count

  509. of three. If that's you, give my life to Jesus

  510. or I'm ready to take that next step and give

  511. everything to stand in the gap and be a difference maker.

  512. That's you.

  513. On the count of three, I want you to step

  514. out and don't look to see if anybody else is moving.

  515. Just get out and go one, two, three, step out

  516. and move right now. I want to be a I

  517. want to be a difference maker. Amen, Amen, Amen, Amen,

  518. Amen amen. Fears falling away, fears falling away, insecurity is

  519. falling away.

  520. Favor is opening.

  521. The windows of heaven are opening for people to experience

  522. Him in.

  523. A new or more fresh way. Thank you, Jesus, Thank you, Jesus,

  524. thank you. The alders are open, asked, Clay must worshiped.
