  1. We're moving into the last message of this series, the

  2. best laid Plans, and I want to talk to you

  3. about we have called it before the meantime, that that

  4. that space where we know God has something, but it

  5. doesn't feel white hot and fervent and exciting right now

  6. in this moment. Amen, if you got a Bible, go

  7. to First Samuel chapter seventeen, First Samuel chapter seventeen, and

  8. I want to read a passage. Now. This is uh,

  9. this is just preceding one of the most powerful, one

  10. of the most popular Bible stories that we tell in

  11. children's church and Sunday School and vacation Bible School. How

  12. many of you ever heard of David and Goliath. Amen,

  13. this is a This is preceding that that that pivotal

  14. moment in the life of David where he faces Goliath.

  15. First Samuel, chapter seventeen, verse seventeen. It says, then Jesse

  16. said to his son David, take now for your brothers

  17. an eph of this dried grain and these ten loaves,

  18. and run to your brothers at the camp, and carry

  19. these ten cheeses to the captain of their thousand, and

  20. see how your brothers fare, and bring back news off them.

  21. Now Saul and they and all of the men of

  22. Israel were there in the valley of Elah fighting with

  23. the Philistines. Let's pray, Father, I thank you for your word.

  24. It's the only change agent on the face of the planet.

  25. And I pray that today you allow us to see

  26. deeper than we've ever seen into our own lives, so

  27. that we can experience you in places we never even

  28. you were there. Word, I ask it in Jesus name. Amen,

  29. you know this is uh, this is a captivating time

  30. when we when we read the life of David. You know,

  31. if they made movies about the life of David, they

  32. they would they would break block they would break box

  33. office records if they really made the story. Come on, somebody,

  34. because there's something in it for everybody. Right. David, he

  35. was uh, he was anointed, but he was also just

  36. one of the people. He had the same struggles and

  37. the same issues and all of those things. And when

  38. we come to this passage of scripture, we need to

  39. understand a few things that have already happened in the

  40. life of David. David was the youngest of the brothers

  41. of Jesse. Samuel, the prophet had rode to the house

  42. of Jesse, and he had his anointing hull, his anointing

  43. horn full of oil. He was there to anoint the

  44. next king. And he goes in and he asked Jesse.

  45. He says, hey, I want to see your sons. One

  46. of them is going to be the next king. And

  47. Jesse lines them up according to the way that he

  48. thinks their kingships should happen. And they all looked the part.

  49. It was a room full of manly men. Come on, somebody,

  50. a room full of people, you know, they look like me,

  51. and uh that that and he marches them and he

  52. said no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, nope.

  53. And he looks at Jesse and he says, no, it's

  54. not them. Do you have any other sons and and

  55. Jesse says, well, yeah, there's this one. There's there's the

  56. little one. He's out he's out tending the sheep. But

  57. it's probably not him. And Samuel says, hey, go get

  58. him any way, just you know, let's just make I

  59. want to be able when when I kneel down and

  60. pray tonight, I want to be able to tell God

  61. that I checked all the boxes. So go get the runt.

  62. Bring him in. Let's check him out, and let's see

  63. what God says. And he comes in and God speaks

  64. and Samuel anoints David to be the next king of Israel. Spiritually,

  65. he had already inherited the throne. Listen to me, at

  66. the spiritual level, he had already inherited the throne, not

  67. at the governmental level, not at the earthly level. But

  68. when God speaks, it's already done. Amen, it's it's settled.

  69. It's done. Case closed. David was king, and then Samuel

  70. rides away. And I'm sure that David not he's he's

  71. the next king. He's like, this is gonna change things.

  72. I mean, I'm probably getting my own bedroom. Come on, somebody,

  73. you know when you've got a bunch of kids, you

  74. know that I probably And if I don't get my

  75. own bedroom, I'm getting the top bunk. Things are about

  76. to change in my life. And Samuel rides away, he

  77. goes over the hill, and Jesse looks at David and says,

  78. get back out there and take care of them sheep.

  79. They not gonna watch their self. David said, huh, I

  80. don't think that's what kings do. But guess what David did.

  81. He wouldn't watch the sheep. He went and watched the

  82. sheep because that is what the moment required of him.

  83. So many times our plans look different than our current situation.

  84. That God has spoken and we see these things and

  85. we know what God has planned for us, or we

  86. feel what God has planned for us, or maybe we've

  87. just envisioned in our own minds what we want God

  88. to do for us, and we look around and right

  89. now doesn't look like that. And then there's a this

  90. moment where now Israel has engaged in this this conflict

  91. with the Philistines, their arch enemies. If this was like

  92. the Marvel movies, right, he would be this would be

  93. like the Philistines would be the main character. They're the

  94. they're the arch villain, and they're engaged in this conflict.

  95. But something has happened and Israel is just consumed with fear.

  96. They march out their they're champion every day, and he says,

  97. send me your best so that everybody doesn't have to die,

  98. win or take all. Let's do it on the battlefield.

  99. And day after day there's no challenger that arises in Israel.

  100. And now David, the next King of Israel, he's in

  101. the field, taking care of the sheep and writing psalms. Listen,

  102. he's out there, he's he's taking care of the sheep

  103. and he's just you know, he's laying and he's looking

  104. at the stars. He's yay the wah walk through the

  105. Valley of the Shadow of Death. Now, first of all,

  106. he is not even in the valley where the war's raging. Amen.

  107. He's like, I'm about to be bored to death right here,

  108. and yeave the wah walk through the Valley of the

  109. Shadow of death. I will fear no evil. He's writing

  110. those words. My soul chases hard after you, though ten

  111. thousand would fall at my hand. David is there, and

  112. he's in this relationship with God, and if his relationship

  113. with God wasn't where it was, if he didn't have

  114. the love affair with the Lord that he had, he

  115. would have never been positioned to actually achieve the plan

  116. that God had for his life. Because there came this

  117. moment where he's out doing this thing and his daddy

  118. calls him in, and I think in his heart he

  119. probably thought, this is it, this is it. I'm about

  120. to be king. And he comes in and his daddy

  121. looks at him and says, hey, I need you to

  122. carry some cheese to the army. Listen. You know your

  123. brothers they like to get into this nonsense, So I

  124. need you to carry this cheese to their captain just

  125. in case they cause trouble. So he won't, he won't

  126. punish him. I won't. I got ten cheeses. Take the

  127. cheese to the captain. And David's like, yes, sir, Now listen,

  128. it's not a king's job to deliver cheese after he

  129. becomes king. But my question to you is God, can

  130. God trust you to carry it? Can God trust you

  131. to carry the cheese? Can God trust you in the

  132. mundane ordinary things? Because if there was no cheese moment,

  133. there would have been no giant moment. The cheese positioned

  134. him for the giant. David carries the cheese and he

  135. carries it in, and he sees his brothers and he

  136. delivers the cheese to the front where the captain was.

  137. They're all poised because evidently what's going on here. I've

  138. never quite understood why we used to do war the

  139. way we did it, where we lined up in straight

  140. rows and let the other people shoot at us, right,

  141. I've never understood why that happened. They all line up,

  142. they get battle gear ready. Goliath comes out issues this challenge.

  143. They stand there, Golith waits a minute, he goes and

  144. sits down, and then they go back to the tent.

  145. So David carries the cheese. Goliath comes out, and something

  146. is stirred in this young boy, and he says, huh,

  147. this don't seem right. I mean, I'm sure when he

  148. said it, David was looking to see who was going.

  149. Where's our champion, where's the one? David said, He's not

  150. gonna talk about my God that way. He will not

  151. speak of my God that way. Now listen, because he

  152. brought the cheese, because he had the integrity to be trusted,

  153. because he was faithful, because he served in the mundane,

  154. just like he would serve in the moment. Somehow he

  155. finds himself in front of us all. Listen to Proverbs

  156. chapter twenty two, verse twenty nine, that says, do you

  157. see a man who excels in his work? Literally? Do

  158. you see a man who is faithful in what he does?

  159. He just shows up. He just shows up and he

  160. does what he's supposed to do. That's what that passage says,

  161. do you see a man who excels in his work?

  162. He will stand before kings. He will not stand before

  163. an unknown man. He will stand just because he serves

  164. the Lord and understands there's more, but serves faithfully where

  165. he's at, and he's diligent about the things that he's doing.

  166. It moves him and gives him favor to stand before king.

  167. So he delivers the cheese. He's standing there and he says, hey,

  168. I want to do this now. Listen, this is a

  169. boy that is really not even He doesn't even qualify

  170. to be in the army, or he would be there

  171. and he says, hey, I want to go fight now. Now,

  172. what's what happens? They take him to the king. I'm

  173. just gonna be honest. If one of the kids that

  174. was standing up here dancing today came up to Pastor

  175. Clay and said, Hey, Pastor Clay, I got a I

  176. got a word for today. I'm supposed to preach. I

  177. just it's a banger man. People are gonna shout and

  178. shake and it's gonna be holy ghost. Just carry me

  179. up there to Pastor and let me and let me

  180. tell him I'm supposed to preach state procticly gonna be high.

  181. I know.

  182. Now, no, probably not. Now, why don't we get that

  183. we're about to give away a secret here? Let us

  184. get that on the calendar. I'm just gonna give you

  185. some transparency. Right. If I look at you and say, hey,

  186. let me try to get that on the calendar, that

  187. means I don't want to do it. That's what that means. Okay,

  188. Just so you know, that means I don't want to

  189. do it. From now on, you know that I'm letting

  190. you down easy. It's it's not you, it's me, right,

  191. it's not you, it's me. So this kid comes and

  192. there's something about him. Now David knows the plan is

  193. for him to be king, but nobody else knows. Nobody

  194. else knows that he's supposed to be the king. But

  195. they saw the faithfulness of the cheese, and it gave

  196. him favor. That he stood before the king and he

  197. looks ats All and he says, hey, let me go

  198. take him out. It's winner take all. I just want

  199. you to because we never think about we never think

  200. like this. And when we knowed, we know that that

  201. king Saul, he's got to be struggling, right, Ernie. I mean,

  202. or somebody would have already went out there and whipped

  203. the Jaia King saw struggling. He don't, he's not and

  204. he's definitely not got a wide open line. He's not

  205. hearing that this is what we're supposed to do. This

  206. kid shows up and he says, hey, let me do it,

  207. and Saul says, okay, sounds great, sounds good, and they

  208. start trying to put the armor on him. He's like, no,

  209. I don't fit. And he looks at Saul and he says, hey,

  210. you know, I fought the bear and I fought the lion,

  211. and I didn't have any of this. I fought the

  212. lion and I fought the bear. See, even in the mundane,

  213. watch this, Even in the mundane their battles, Even in

  214. the day to day life that we live on the

  215. way to purse pursuing what God has for us, there

  216. are going to be those moments of encounter where we

  217. have to get a little bit outside of our normal

  218. effort to be able to persevere. And I'm sure in

  219. that moment when the bear came, David thought, this is

  220. going to be the biggest challenge of my life. When

  221. the lion came. This is the biggest challenge of my life.

  222. But each one of those things was small in comparison

  223. to what God was preparing him to do. He says,

  224. let me go, and then we all know the end

  225. of the story. He takes the sling, and then it's

  226. over and in a moment, look at me, And in

  227. a moment, the next king went from obscurity to notoriety

  228. because of the faithfulness over the cheese. We see it

  229. time and time and time again, where faithfulness and integrity

  230. leads us towards the plan because there's no there's no

  231. missional drift when we're busy with what God is putting

  232. in front of us, and we are absolutely embracing everything

  233. that the mundane moment requires, and we're chasing after God,

  234. and we just want more and more and more and

  235. more and more and more. We see it in Joseph. Joseph,

  236. God gives him this dream, and his brothers get mad

  237. and they sell him. They pretend like he's dead, and

  238. they sell him and he's a slave and ends up

  239. at Potiphar's house and Potiphar's wife comes watch this for Mama.

  240. Why would joseph story had not worked for David. See,

  241. God's got your own path. Your destiny is not on

  242. somebody else's path. Because if David had been at Potiphar's

  243. house been a different story, wouldn't it. We know David

  244. struggle there because God lines us in our training ground

  245. to build our strengths and protects us from our weakness,

  246. and he refuses to get us, so he's thrown in jail.

  247. And even when he's in jail, he refuses to do

  248. anything other than lead and be the person, and he's

  249. elevated through prison until he stands before Pharaoh, and Pharaoh

  250. recognizes the faithfulness and the integrity of the moments through

  251. the invisible plan that Pharaoh knew nothing about. I've been

  252. so much time trying to convince people that we're important.

  253. But God doesn't need anybody to see that you're important

  254. until the moment he pulls the curtain back and reveals

  255. it to the world. He collapses timeframes, he breaks through barriers,

  256. and he accelerates things, and he puts you in front

  257. of the people you need to be in front of

  258. in the moment that you need to be in front

  259. of them, because that's what God does, because that's who

  260. God is. In Matthew, Chapter twenty five, verse fifteen. It's

  261. the parable of the talents, it says, And to one

  262. he gave five talents, to another two and to another one,

  263. to each according to his own ability, And immediately he

  264. went on a journey. You know that word ability, when

  265. when we think of ability, we think of skill, But

  266. that word actually just simply means readiness to handle responsibility.

  267. That's it, readiness to handle responsibility. He did not give

  268. five to his crypto broker. That's not how that That's

  269. not how that ability was divided, right, He didn't give

  270. two to his stockbroker and one to his gardener. That's

  271. not what it's talking about. The one he gave five

  272. to had proved himself faithful and ready to rise to

  273. the occasion. The one that got two had proved himself

  274. to a level to be faithful and ready to rise

  275. to the challenge. And the one that received one probably

  276. checked in every day late. Because we're not all at

  277. the same place in the developmental scale. God can't trust

  278. us all with the same thing. There are certain things

  279. that I realize about me, and gosh, why do Larry,

  280. why do I say things that I just know? I

  281. shouldn't say when I'm standing up here ap preaching. But

  282. here's the thing. You know, our church is the size

  283. that it's at because I just honestly don't really like people.

  284. It's not something that I mean, just I don't listen.

  285. I don't want to be eating dinner somewhere and twenty

  286. people come up and interrupt me while I'm eating dinner. Amen.

  287. I don't want to have to wear a hat and

  288. sunglasses and a hoodie to shop for groceries. Amen. With

  289. my good looks, I could have been in Hollywood. I

  290. know that, no doubt, but it's not something that I

  291. am equipped for responsibility in that area. The mundane moments

  292. of life on our way to the dream. Pursuing purpose

  293. is all about being prepared for the responsibility of the moment.

  294. If David didn't have the bear and the lion and

  295. the cheese, he would not have been able to handle

  296. the notoriety that came after the giant. God is preparing

  297. you for something so significant that you don't understand it

  298. because you're not ready for it, and the moment you

  299. become ready, you will understand it and be able to

  300. receive it. So you continue in the training ground. And

  301. here's the thing. Purpose is not the end, Purpose is

  302. the journey. Purpose is getting their purpose is the cheese.

  303. Your readiness to handle response to Pastor Clay, You guys

  304. can come and get ready. Your readiness to handle responsibility?

  305. You know, I have seen on more than one occasion.

  306. You know, we live in a world, especially in ministry,

  307. where it's rare. It is rare to find someone to

  308. serve in one place very long. Now. Pastors do it

  309. more than support staff. Pastors last longer than support staff, because,

  310. after all, we're in charge, right, the illusion right, we're

  311. in charge. But to have somebody that has served as

  312. long as Pastor Clay is very rare, especially with his

  313. giftings and his talents. He's very gifted. He's very talented,

  314. not just at the things you see, but at the

  315. things that actually move the needle in a church from

  316. the administrative point. But here's the thing I know about him.

  317. I can count him. I can count on him to

  318. carry cheese. You like cheese, don't you a lot? I

  319. just have to worry about him eating it. Come on, somebody,

  320. he shows up to the captain. He got eight blocks,

  321. Well last week there was ten. I don't know what happened.

  322. But here's the thing, and this is what he says.

  323. I don't know if I want that chair. I don't

  324. feel like I'm ready that maturity, that is being equipped

  325. for responsibility. That is what that looks like. Stop being

  326. mad at God.

  327. Because somebody else has more, because somebody else is further

  328. along in the journey.

  329. Because you feel like it's not fair. What's not fair

  330. is God giving it to you and watching it crush you.

  331. Whatever it is, continue to be faithful in the moment

  332. and learn the skills necessary for the moment. Learn how

  333. money works. Learn what a good employee looks like. Learn

  334. what a good boss looks like. Learn what a good

  335. owner looks like while you have a safety net. Learn

  336. what a good husband looks like before you find out

  337. it's hard. Learn what a good father looks like before

  338. your tasked with the biggest decision of your life. Those

  339. things are for the moment. If you're here, you're wondering

  340. whether God has something for you. Maybe you don't even

  341. know Jesus yet. Jeremiah twenty nine to eleven. I'm gonna

  342. read it out of the New King James. Then I'm

  343. gonna quote it to you. Out of the NIV show

  344. it to me, says, for I know the thoughts that

  345. I that I think towards you, The Lord thoughts of

  346. peace and not of evil, to give you a future

  347. and a hope. Then IV says it this way, I

  348. know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord.

  349. I know the plans I have for you, declares the

  350. Lord plans to prosper you and not to harm you,

  351. plans to give you hope and a future. God knows

  352. the plans he has for you. And right now the

  353. plan may be to carry the cheese. But there's still hope,

  354. and there's still a future. It doesn't matter if you're

  355. four or ninety four. There's still a future. There's still

  356. things to do, there's still things to accomplish, there's still destiny,

  357. there's still purpose, there's still all of those things that

  358. are right around the corner on the horizon. If we

  359. learn integrity and faithfulness in the morning and peace in

  360. the evening, we serve a good God whose desire is

  361. for you to have the things.

  362. He spoke.

  363. Every head bowed and every eye closed. You're here today

  364. and you've never asked Jesus to forgive you of your sins.

  365. You've never asked him to be the lord of your life.

  366. You're talking about a journey from heaven to earth, to

  367. brutal death to heaven so that he could forgive your sins. Today,

  368. if you're here and you've never trusted him that way,

  369. you've never asked him to forgive you, But today you

  370. want to slip up your hand and say, that's my pastor.

  371. I want to give my life.

  372. To Jesus today.

  373. I wanted to forgive me of my sins, make me

  374. a new creation. Amen. Amen. Father, I pray right now

  375. for every person in this place that you would work

  376. and move in their lives. Father, I give you glory

  377. and honor and praise in Jesus mighty mighty name. Amen.

  378. I want want to do something real quick though you

  379. guys already have the elements, so I want to go ahead,

  380. and I want us to receive communion and then worship,

  381. because when the Holy girls fauls, I don't want y'all

  382. throwing grape juice and crackers all over each other. Amen. Amen.

  383. So if you would everybody stand with me with.

  384. The elements, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.

  385. As Jesus was pursuing his purpose, reconciling fallen men to

  386. Holy God. There was this moment. Dinner could have come

  387. and gone, but there was no ordinary moment. There is

  388. no ordinary moment. There is no ordinary moment in your life.

  389. Every single moment is spiritually significant. Jesus was sitting there.

  390. He had his closest ministry partners around him, and he

  391. took the bread from the table. He began to say,

  392. this bread, this represents my body. It'll be broken for

  393. you as often as you receive it. Remember me. Remember me,

  394. because I am the fuel of your life. I am

  395. your guiding purpose. Remember me. Then he blessed the bread. Father,

  396. I pray it you bless this bread, the broken body

  397. of Christ for me. Jesus, I'll never forget the things

  398. you've done for me. Bless it. Let's receive it together.

  399. And then he took the cup. He said, this is
