  1. SCOTT BRODD: Good morning church. How is everyone? Blessed

  2. to be here today with you guys. First and foremost, there's a

  3. few points of gratitude that I want to make this morning before

  4. you to the Lord. First is we had another serve day yesterday to

  5. get the renovation work another step forward, push the ball down

  6. the field a bit further.

  7. And so I just wanted to thank everybody who showed up

  8. yesterday and served in that way. Bo, thank you for your

  9. leadership in that as well. I also wanted to give a huge shout

  10. out to our student ministry team for, I don't know why they do

  11. it, but they decide that lock-ins are a great thing for

  12. teens, and so to keep them up all night.

  13. So I know Austin and Kat and the whole ministry team, thank you

  14. guys. I know there were several of you who were partnering in

  15. that as well, came and spoke or shared or shared a testimony-led

  16. worship. So I just want to say thank you for ministering to

  17. them in our teens as well. Yeah.

  18. It's a huge blessing. I got to show up a little bit late and

  19. got to do one of my favorite things, which was play Nine

  20. Square. Is that what it's called? Nine Square. Nine in the

  21. high sky square. That's not what it's called. But anyways, and

  22. glow in the dark. It was awesome. But again, thank you

  23. guys.

  24. So if this is your first time here, or if you haven't been

  25. here in a while, we are in a series right now called Search

  26. And Rescue. And it's built out of the simple premise that Jesus

  27. came with a mission. He was sent by the Father to seek and to

  28. save the lost, right? And in cute terms, seek and save sounds

  29. good. Search And Rescue is the reality of it because lostness

  30. is peril.

  31. Lostness is dangerous. It's a futile thing to live far from

  32. the Lord. And so we're on this mission because Jesus has tasked

  33. us with it. And that's how we started this whole series. This

  34. idea that as Jesus said, as the Father has sent me. So I am

  35. sending you. We are entrusted with this mission of Search And

  36. Rescue. We've got the life raft of the gospel.

  37. We toss it out to those who are drowning in their lostness. That

  38. was how we started. And then the next week we talked about

  39. spiritual fitness to be fit and ready for Search And Rescue.

  40. Just as Joseph was saying about like, some of us have a really

  41. tough time learning, like loving lost people because of the

  42. different things that they think or how they feel.

  43. Like, and you've got... So much in you that jams you up from

  44. being free to do that. And so the reality is we need to press

  45. in. We need to grow in our faith if we're going to be available

  46. and even increasingly effective in this mission that we've been

  47. given. And then the third week, last week, we talked about who

  48. it is that we're loving.

  49. Like the lost, like, and it's not offensive to call people

  50. that. That's because who we once were, and it was by God's grace

  51. alone that we've been found. It's not something that we just

  52. self-discovery and got out of it. But it's, it's the lostness

  53. is the condition of every human being apart from Christ.

  54. And it's a, it's a peril. It's connected to danger and, and

  55. futile thinking. And so, so like loving people in this way, it's

  56. important that we know who they are. So ironically enough, in a

  57. way, so far in this series, like if we're to be tasked with

  58. Search And Rescue, we haven't quite left the base yet, have

  59. we?

  60. We haven't gone out searching in our series yet. We're kind of

  61. briefing. We're getting ready to go out and all this, right? And

  62. we're getting there. And I know some of you are kind of antsy.

  63. You're probably actually more worried that when we do start to

  64. talk about the practice of loving lost people, that you

  65. think I'm going to send you with white picket fence signs out to

  66. the street corners.

  67. Or to maybe send you to the local bars on a Friday night,

  68. and when people are coming out, you ask them, Hey, how many

  69. drinks have you had? And if you die tonight, would you go to

  70. heaven or hell? I'm not going to encourage you to do that, by the

  71. way. That kind of evangelism, that's old school, right?

  72. We're going to update our strategy, so if you're worried

  73. about that, don't worry. It's going to look a lot different.

  74. We'll get there. But today is another kind of prepping to go

  75. sort of thing. Getting things ready. So if you haven't yet, I

  76. haven't told you yet actually where to go in this thing, so go

  77. ahead and open to 2 Corinthians chapter 5.

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  78. 2 Corinthians chapter 5. And as you're turning there, I want to

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  79. set up today kind of with a story. I, for the past few

  80. weeks, so I drive a Ford F-150, which is America's truck. Hands

  81. down, just saying, it's America's truck. But the problem

  82. is, I was having coolant leaks, just like America is, and I was

  83. leaving puddles in place.

  84. Places and so I kind of put something in the system to be

  85. able to detect where the leaks were and I found two leaks

  86. coming from two different hoses and so I decided I was going to

  87. buy the parts and do it myself and I bought a few other

  88. replacement parts as well like the tensioners on the belt,

  89. bought new belt lines, new water pump and all these different

  90. things and Friday, if you don't know, Friday is my day off so my

  91. phone gets turned off basically.

  92. But I, this past Friday, set myself to being like, all right,

  93. I'm going to get this fixed. And so I'm in there and I start to

  94. pull out the air intake housing and all these different parts.

  95. And as I start to pull things out, I see that there's another

  96. leak coming from the radiator. So there was more. So I, at this

  97. point, needed some encouragement.

  98. And I called one of the more encouraging guys that I know,

  99. Dave Simpson. So, and he's very knowledgeable. He's a mechanical

  100. engineer for like hydraulic systems for nuclear plants. So

  101. if he can figure those out, pretty sure he can figure out my

  102. engine. So he came over just like, I didn't even ask, he just

  103. offered. It was such a gift. And he came over and so we're

  104. working on this engine.

  105. We're trying to get down to the root of things. I'm pulling out

  106. different parts and there's this part in there that's called the

  107. air intake throttle body. It's basically your carburetor. It's

  108. where air and the gasoline mix together and that creates your

  109. combustion. So we looked in this, like I've got the intake

  110. off and you've got this throttle body.

  111. It's that little flip thing, right? The little switch, the

  112. valve that opens up. And we pull it off and the whole thing is

  113. just caked. Like there's no silver there. It's just caked

  114. with gunk. And so Dave, when he saw that, he just asked, he's

  115. like, what kind of fuel are you running this thing on? And I

  116. said, well, it's diesel. It's not diesel. I'm just kidding.

  117. My F-150 is not a diesel truck. It's a regular gasoline truck.

  118. So I asked him if that was going to be a problem. I haven't,

  119. again, I have not put diesel in my car just so you, I haven't

  120. done it. But. It was strange to see all the gunk in there when

  121. you're putting the right stuff in. I told him, I'm putting in

  122. the unleaded, the 87. This is like everybody else.

  123. This is what I'm supposed to do. It's still kinked, gunked with

  124. all of this carbon deposit. But you and I both know that

  125. specific engines are made to run off of specific fuels. You don't

  126. put diesel in a regular gas engine. How many of you have

  127. made that mistake before? Good. You don't put gas in a diesel

  128. engine, right?

  129. You also, you don't put, you know how you have those small

  130. engines that are two-stroke engines and you have to mix the

  131. oil and the gas together pre-mixed and then you put them

  132. in the... You don't put that kind of gas in a regular engine,

  133. which I found out the hard way last year with my neighbor's

  134. tiller. I didn't know they kept them separate, so I put the mix

  135. in and thankfully it was a Honda, so it took it like a

  136. champ.

  137. But everyone knows you've got to put the right fuel in the engine

  138. that matches the engine. You can't mix them up. You can't get

  139. them wrong. If you put the wrong fuel in, it'll gum it up, it'll

  140. jam it up, it'll mess things up, it'll break things apart.

  141. Everyone kind of knows this.

  142. Even like if you look at like the Navy operators, Search And

  143. Rescue squad from the National Guard or local National Forest

  144. like Park Service, they know to put the right you fuel in the

  145. engines of their vehicles, whether it's their helicopters,

  146. their airplanes, whether it's their UTVs to trek up the

  147. mountains. Like, they know to put the right fuel in.

  148. Brothers and sisters, I'm telling you this morning this

  149. because in this mission of Search And Rescue, our hearts

  150. are the engine that move us forward in this. And my question

  151. for you this morning, is what kind of fuel is your heart

  152. running on when it comes to Search And Rescue?

  153. What fuel are you running on when it comes to this idea of

  154. evangelism, when it comes to witness, when it comes to

  155. sharing your faith, seeking and saving the lost? Because your

  156. heart's designed to run on specific fuel. And if there's

  157. the wrong fuel in there, your heart's going to get all gunked

  158. up. The throttle body is not going to work great. Fuel

  159. injectors will malfunction.

  160. In other words, what I'm asking you is what are your

  161. motivations? What motivations do we have and what motivations

  162. ought we to have? What fuel should we be putting in our

  163. hearts when it comes to Search And Rescue? Again, this is

  164. another briefing. We're getting ready to head out and do the

  165. practice, but we've got to get things in proper order before we

  166. go.

  167. It's important for us to do this self-examination work. To see

  168. what's in the tank and to know what kind of fuel we need to be

  169. able to run efficiently on this mission that we've been given.

  170. So ironically enough, like scripture points to, I'll start

  171. with like three fuel types, three kinds of fuels that you

  172. can put in your heart that will get things going, that'll get

  173. you moving, start you up and work you out in Search And

  174. Rescue. So you Let's just tackle at least three right now. The

  175. first fuel type that I think scripture points to is this one.

  176. It's called sobering urgency. Can you say sobering urgency?

  177. This fuel type kind of revolves around the nature of lostness,

  178. the peril that is in present lostness, and the future

  179. judgment that's coming. When you stay lost. The reality of future

  180. judgment, like as you and I ponder, as we consider the

  181. condition of the human soul that's lost to God, like how

  182. devastating, how dangerous it is, that should move us to a

  183. sense of sobriety and urgency.

  184. There's no way we can stay complacent in that and unmoved.

  185. We get this, you can kind of see it already in 2 Corinthians 5.

  186. I've got a few other passages, but look at 2 Corinthians 5.

  187. Let's start at verse 10. Take a look there. Verse 10. For we all

  188. must appear before the judgment seat of Christ.

  189. Ponder that.

  190. We all must appear before the judgment seat of Christ so that

  191. each may be repaid for what he has done in the body, whether

  192. good or evil. Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we

  193. try to persuade people. Can you hear that? We have this...

  194. Sobering fear of a holy God that one day we will stand before and

  195. give an account.

  196. And so that should spur us on. Look, it says he connects that

  197. reality. Therefore, since we have this fear of the Lord, we

  198. try to persuade people. We persuade them towards Christ. In

  199. other words, this passage in... Jude's letter, you can see it in

  200. verse 23 and 24. This is the way he describes it. He's saying

  201. that to the church, have mercy on those who waver and save

  202. others by snatching them from the fire.

  203. Guys, this is, if we believe in a literal hell, that sobers us

  204. up. It gives us an urgency. We're pulling people from the

  205. fire in this mission. So, like, I hope last week persuaded you

  206. enough that people who are lost aren't just mildly

  207. inconvenienced without Christ. Like, they're in real danger.

  208. And the reality, that reality should wake us up. It should

  209. start the engine.

  210. That kind of fuel, that'll get us moving. It'll get us going at

  211. least. We must be sober and we must be urgent in this. Think

  212. about the parables that we talked about last week in Luke

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  213. chapter 15. The parable of the lost sheep. The parable of the

  214. lost coin. You have these owners, the shepherd and the

  215. owner of the coin. What do they do? They don't just like ah, I

  216. lost it, it's alright.

  217. They diligently, they urgently kind of put everything else

  218. aside and they go after the thing that's been lost. The

  219. woman, she sweeps the house, she turns on the lamps and she

  220. starts to urgently look for this thing that was lost, which is

  221. why there's such a celebration when it's found. There's this

  222. urgency that we have.

  223. So if we put this kind of fuel in our tanks, in our hearts, if

  224. it's there, you won't ever find yourself being casual on this

  225. mission, as if it's meaningless or not important. It's of most

  226. importance. So we need to, I think it's biblical for us to

  227. have a sense of sobering urgency within us when it comes to this

  228. mission. Of Search And Rescue. So fill up on that. Fuel

  229. yourself on that. But not just that. There's more.

  230. There's another kind of fuel that scripture talks about.

  231. Sacred duty. Can you say sacred duty? This is the fuel that

  232. comes from an understanding that you and I have been tasked with

  233. this mission. We've been entrusted with this. Jesus said,

  234. as the Father sends me, so I am sending you. The impartation of

  235. the mission. Soldiers have an understanding that they've been

  236. given a duty, an obligation.

  237. And they fulfill the mission, the task of it. Because it's

  238. their responsibility. They understand this. We can see this

  239. in chapter 5. Look down at verse 18. Jump down to there. This is

  240. Paul saying, Everything is from God who has reconciled us to

  241. himself through Christ. And has given us what? The ministry of

  242. reconciliation. The service of reconciliation. Reconciling

  243. people back to God who were once in distance to Him.

  244. Once in broken relationship with Him. He's given us the ministry

  245. of reconciliation. Verse 19, that is in Christ God was

  246. reconciling the world to Himself. Not counting their

  247. trespasses against them. And He has committed, entrusted. The

  248. message of reconciliation to us. We don't just have this ministry

  249. or this service. We've got the life raft.

  250. We've been given the means by which people are saved.

  251. Therefore, verse 20, we are ambassadors for Christ. We're

  252. appointed to that mission. Since God is making his appeal to the

  253. world through us. So we plead. On Christ's behalf, be

  254. reconciled to God. And this is the most gospelicious verse

  255. you'll find. He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for

  256. us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  257. Amen? It's this sacred responsibility, this duty that

  258. we've been given, this calling that we have on our lives.

  259. Search And Rescue. You can see this understanding in Paul's

  260. first letter in chapter... 9 to the Corinthians, he says this,

  261. For if we preach the gospel, I have no reason to boast because

  262. I am compelled to preach. He says, And woe to me if I do not

  263. preach the gospel.

  264. Because if I do this willingly, I have a reward. But if I do it

  265. unwillingly, still, I am entrusted with a commission.

  266. I've got the mission. It's mine to do. And what then is my

  267. reward? To preach the gospel and offer it free of charge and not

  268. make full use of my rights in the gospel. Guys, we've got this

  269. sense that we've been entrusted with this. Whether we do it

  270. willingly or unwillingly, we're entrusted with this commission.

  271. We've got this holy obligation, this sacred duty. So fuel up on

  272. that. Get that in your hearts. The sense of, man, I am the

  273. king's. He can dispatch me how he pleases. In my apprenticeship

  274. to Jesus, we're commissioned to serve on the same mission he

  275. came for. It's part of our sacred duty. So get that in your

  276. hearts. Your engine will run on that well.

  277. We've got this third fuel type that I want to tell you about

  278. that I've also seen in the scriptures. Missional ambition.

  279. Can you say missional ambition? This kind of fuel type has to do

  280. with setting Search And Rescue as your goal, as your life aim,

  281. as what you're aspiring to. So you set the mission of Jesus as

  282. something you want to see accomplished, to see fulfilled.

  283. So you put in the work. You allow your life to be caught up

  284. in it. It's something that drives you, that moves you. I

  285. see this when Paul talks in Romans 15. It's actually a verse

  286. that defined a lot of my life when I was looking to go into

  287. missional work in unreached people groups.

  288. He says this, My aim, my goal, my motivation, my ambition is to

  289. preach the gospel where Christ has not been named so that I

  290. would not be a sinner. Build on someone else's foundation. Some

  291. of your translations, again, like I said, your translations

  292. might say, my ambition, my aim, my aspiration.

  293. It's this holy drive, something that you love to see, that the

  294. gospel would go further, that you're not content with just

  295. maintaining what is current. You want to see it press on further

  296. to reach new people until Christ is known everywhere. We can see

  297. this.

  298. You don't have to turn there, but we're in 2 Corinthians 10

  299. now. Check this out. This is what Paul says. He says, we are

  300. not boasting beyond measure about other people's labors. On

  301. the contrary, we have the hope, or the word there is

  302. expectation.

  303. We are planning that as your faith increases, our area of

  304. ministry will be greatly enlarged so that we may preach

  305. the gospel to the regions beyond you without boasting about what

  306. has already been done in someone else's area of ministry.

  307. As this is a God-given ambition to push the mission further, to

  308. push that ball down the field even further, to take new

  309. territory, not just to maintain what's current and existing, but

  310. to look to see the kingdom of God advancing beyond the current

  311. horizon. So we've got like three quick fuel types to put in our

  312. hearts that start our engine up and get us moving. Sobering

  313. urgency, the sacred duty and a missional ambition.

  314. But before we go any further, I think it's really important that

  315. we need to pause here and I need to point something out to each

  316. of you.

  317. Because for those of you who maintain your own yards, like

  318. your own property, and you have maybe some small tools like a

  319. chainsaw or a weed whacker and they run on fuel, you know that

  320. after a while, if you keep fuel in a tank somewhere and it goes

  321. unused, what happens to the fuel? It, I'll say it sours or

  322. kind of degrades, like it doesn't, it loses its potency.

  323. It doesn't actually get the engine going anymore.

  324. If these fuels, which are right, true, good, and biblical, if

  325. they start to, they start to sour, it'll jam up your engine.

  326. It'll jam up your hearts. If they turn bad, There's a way for

  327. these fuels, if they're misunderstood and misapplied,

  328. they can gum up everything in your heart.

  329. And when they do, they cause you in the mission of Search And

  330. Rescue to act what I'll say is unnaturally or strangely. So for

  331. example, if we took a look at this, sobering urgency, if it

  332. degrades, It can turn into fearful panic.

  333. In other words, when you're in Search And Rescue and you're

  334. looking to see people come to faith in Christ, instead of

  335. being motivated out of a sobering urgency, you're

  336. motivated by a fearful panic and an anxiety. When people are

  337. panicked, do they act natural? Do you act natural when you're

  338. panicked? No.

  339. You actually act very strangely. Very different. There's a way

  340. for us to be running on fear and misplaced fear and panic when it

  341. comes to Search And Rescue, and it makes us gunked up.

  342. So I can tell you this, that from a pastor's perspective,

  343. people who tend to be more panicked in Search And Rescue

  344. are parents of lost loved ones, of children who don't know

  345. Christ. And there's a way that that fearful panic can start to

  346. cause you to try to embrace strategies for sharing the

  347. gospel that sound more like manipulation and control.

  348. You start trying to get control over things that only God has

  349. control over, and instead of speaking with grace, you react

  350. out of fear. This sort of degradation to sobering urgency

  351. and to fearful panic, like... Causes us to be emotionally

  352. dysregulated when we're talking to people about Jesus.

  353. Sometimes to evangelize, we're yelling at them rather than

  354. speaking with them in love. Sometimes this panic, this sense

  355. of fearful panic is so me-oriented that when I'm

  356. questioned or when somebody challenges my viewpoint with

  357. something that seems to be more true to them than it does to us,

  358. we start maybe to react in anger. This panic can lead to

  359. that.

  360. When they criticize you, when they mock you for your faith,

  361. you can find yourself there. Or perhaps your sobering urgency

  362. has turned to fearful panic about where the world is going

  363. and where our nation is going. And so what you're trying to do

  364. now is you're in fearful panic, engaging in the culture wars of

  365. the day, in the political polarization of the day.

  366. And you think that that's where evangelism happens. Christ did

  367. not call us to be promoting Trump before Christ in this

  368. mission. To defend Trump is not part of this. Or to defend the

  369. Republican Party, that's not part of the Search And Rescue

  370. mission. To defend the Democratic Party is not part of

  371. the Search And Rescue mission. The kingdom of God is above all

  372. and over all.

  373. But we, in fearful panic, can find ourselves trying to quick

  374. post something that's engaging with the political problems of

  375. the day and calling out people and name-calling other people,

  376. thinking that this is the way it's supposed to be done, when

  377. in all it does is mar your witness.

  378. So I need to ask you this morning, instead of sobering

  379. urgency, are you more motivated in the Search And Rescue mission

  380. by fearful panic? Are you anxious? Too worried, over

  381. worried, that fuel has soured. So it's time to drain that tank

  382. and refuel on what would be biblical, sobering urgency.

  383. There's also this reality of our sacred duty, this sense of holy

  384. obligation that we've been given. That can sour as well

  385. into something I'll call guilty obligation. In order to feel

  386. like a good Christian, you have to tell other people about

  387. Jesus.

  388. You don't have to raise your hand, but how many of you feel

  389. like that's exactly where you're at? The reason why I have to do

  390. Search And Rescue is because, geez, I have to be a good

  391. Christian. If I've got to be a good Christian, I've got to tell

  392. people about Jesus. And man, I don't want to do that.

  393. It's like where you're witnessing about Christ is more

  394. from a debt payment back to Him than it is a joy. It's like

  395. you're on a guilt trip.

  396. So when you bear witness about Jesus, what happens is there's

  397. no natural joy in you, which joy is natural to the Christian now,

  398. or at least it ought to be. But when you have this sense that

  399. your holy obligation before God on this Search And Rescue has

  400. become more of a guilty obligation. Your evangelism,

  401. your Search And Rescue task turns into a Saturday chore.

  402. Something you just got to get done. Brothers and sisters,

  403. things won't ever transform in your life if you keep running on

  404. a guilt trip pursuit of sanctification, of trying to

  405. serve on the Search And Rescue mission with guilty obligation

  406. in your tank. I'm telling you, this is the morning. Drain that

  407. fuel.

  408. Because it won't sustain you. It will ruin your heart if you keep

  409. it in there too long. It's time to empty that out. Fill up again

  410. with what is this holy calling. This sacred duty that we've been

  411. given. That's good. Then we have this missional ambition. When

  412. that degrades, you know what it turns into? It turns into

  413. prideful selfishness.

  414. It turns into prideful selfishness. This is where the

  415. ambition for the mission turns into you boasting about the

  416. things that you've accomplished, about all the people that you

  417. shared with. It's when seeing people saved is more for your

  418. own ego and bragging rights than it is for the glory of God and

  419. their good.

  420. Sorry if the toes just got stepped on. This is where

  421. evangelism can be more like sales quotas with a bonus. This

  422. is where you testifying about Jesus is so that you can have

  423. more spiritual trophies on your trophy wall of people who came

  424. to faith in Christ that every now and then you can take down

  425. and show people what you've done.

  426. It all feeds the ego. It becomes about your story, about your

  427. results, about your success, rather than for God's glory and

  428. their rescue. Brothers and sisters, Search And Rescue is

  429. never me-centric. It's always him and the lost. They're at the

  430. end of the equation.

  431. We are a part of it at the beginning, but they're who it

  432. all equals for. Do you know what the National Guard's motto is?

  433. Let me ask this. Do you know what the Marines' motto is?

  434. Semper Fi. The National Guard's motto? That others may live.

  435. There's no me in that picture. It's not from my ego. I'm not at

  436. the end of the equation. So if you find in yourself, when you

  437. think about Search And Rescue, that your kingdom gets a little

  438. bit more glory when you do that, you need to drain that fuel this

  439. morning.

  440. Empty your heart of that and refuel with the purity of what

  441. is a missional ambition to see the kingdom of Christ advance

  442. for his glory, for their good, at my expense. We need to get

  443. back to the purity of this, the purity of sobering urgency, of

  444. sacred duty, and of missional ambition. All of these can move

  445. you. All of these in their purity can fill up your tank and

  446. get your engine going.

  447. So put them in there. But there's one more fuel. And you

  448. know how out of the gas pump you have the three different

  449. options? You have 87, 88, and 89 octane? How many of you fill up

  450. on 89 because you really want to go fast on the highway? Nobody?

  451. Yeah, it's too expensive.

  452. But what that is, it's richer and it can sustain your engine

  453. and create a bigger combustion and more powerful engine and

  454. more horsepower and more torque out of it. It can get your motor

  455. moving even more. Well, there's one more fuel type in the

  456. scripture that I would say is the highest octane for your

  457. heart. Can you guess what it is?

  458. It's Christ's love. It's his love. That's going to be found

  459. right in the middle of the passage we were just in in 2

  460. Corinthians 5. We'll start back at verse 11. Remember, we all

  461. are going to appear before the judgment seat of Christ.

  462. Therefore, since we know the fear of the Lord, we try to

  463. persuade people. What we are is plain to God.

  464. I hope it is also plain to your consciousness. We are not

  465. commending ourselves to you again, but giving you an

  466. opportunity to be proud of us. You may have a reply for those

  467. who take pride in outward appearance rather than in the

  468. heart. For if we are in our mind, it is for God. If we are

  469. out of our right mind, it is for you. Sorry, I read that wrong.

  470. If we are in our right mind, it is for you. Verse 14. For the

  471. love of Christ. Compels us. Since we have reached this

  472. conclusion, if one died for all, then all died. And he died for

  473. all so that those who live should no longer live for

  474. themselves, but for the one who died for them and was raised.

  475. This is the word of the Lord.

  476. It's the love of Christ that compels us, that moves us. You

  477. know, the literal translation of that word, it seizes us. It

  478. consumes us. Brothers and sisters, witnessing or Search

  479. And Rescue work in the kingdom of God is primarily and

  480. ultimately an act of love. Seeing that Jesus died for all

  481. so that they don't have to live for themselves anymore, but they

  482. can live for him now, right?

  483. So why we're saying that this whole series is learning to love

  484. the lost like Jesus. It's Christ's love that's going to be

  485. the best fuel for our hearts. That moves us in this mission.

  486. Guys, I'm telling you this morning, the simple point is

  487. this. The driving fuel for Search And Rescue is Christ's

  488. love.

  489. Did you notice how he doesn't put a direction on that love? In

  490. the text, he says, for the love of Christ compels us. But what

  491. direction of that love? Is it our love for him? Is it his love

  492. for us? Is it his love for them? Yes, all the above. It's our

  493. love for Jesus that moves us. Thanks. His love for us that

  494. moves us. It's His love for them that moves us.

  495. And just so we're all on the same page, because there's so

  496. many things in this world that are called love, I just want to

  497. make sure we're defining love rightly. Love is to will the

  498. good of another ahead of your own, no matter the cost. To will

  499. the good of another ahead of your own good, no matter the

  500. cost. It's an act of sacrificial love to another for their good

  501. at your expense.

  502. And this is according to Jesus. You remember John 3, 16? What is

  503. it that God is moved by such that he sent his one and only

  504. son? God so loved the world. God is moved by love in Search And

  505. Rescue. That's what's in his heart. And by the way, I want to

  506. make sure we understand this as well, that this kind of love,

  507. this understanding of love, it's not a force or a concept

  508. external to God, right?

  509. It's not a force that obligates him to act in love. Love is in

  510. the heart of God. As Scripture tells us, 1 John, that God is

  511. love. In other words, if we're going to get a definition and

  512. understanding of what love really is, we have to look at

  513. what God does and therefore we get our definition of it. Amen?

  514. So instead of saying God is compelled by love, I heard it

  515. once said that God is impelled by love. It's not an external

  516. force. It's something within him. And it moves him to send

  517. his only son to seek and to save the lost. You see, he's not

  518. compelled by panic. He's not compelled by obligation. Oh man,

  519. I got to go find them. Jeez, they're lost.

  520. He's not compelled by selfishness. He didn't need us.

  521. He's sufficient in himself. It's love. And so he moves. Brothers

  522. and sisters, the driving fuel for Search And Rescue that you

  523. need in your heart above all is Christ's love. It's his love.

  524. And so we're just going to do... A quick exercise this morning

  525. right now to wrap up our time. If you would just close your

  526. eyes.

  527. If you just take a few deep breaths. Breathe in through your

  528. nose, out through your mouth.

  529. Focus your thoughts.

  530. Focus your thoughts on this Search And Rescue mission that

  531. Jesus has given you.

  532. And as you're there, what do you find in the tank of your heart

  533. when you hear about your call to Search And Rescue, to your call

  534. to love the lost?

  535. What's in the tank?

  536. What fuel are you trying to run on? Is it panic?

  537. Is it anxiety?

  538. An all-consuming fear?

  539. Or maybe it's a sense of guilt?

  540. Or pressure coming from an obligation.

  541. Or maybe it's selfishness. Maybe it's pride. Maybe it's so that

  542. you can boast.

  543. Brothers and sisters, I want you right now in this very moment,

  544. if any of those are true, Would you just invite the Holy Spirit

  545. right now to drain that tank?

  546. And ask him to fill you up with everything that is good, right,

  547. true, and beautiful.

  548. Fill up the tank of your heart with a sobering urgency, with a

  549. sense of sacred duty, with a desire for missional ambition.

  550. Most of all, would you ask him to fill up your heart with his

  551. love?

  552. Today's the day that he wants to do a transformative work in your

  553. heart.

  554. And as long as you want to hold on to your fuel types that

  555. aren't getting you going anywhere on Search And Rescue

  556. mission, you'll be sidelined. That engine won't run.

  557. Would you let the Holy Spirit Of God in this moment right now

  558. grow His love in you?

  559. Urgency, duty, and ambition, those three remain, but the

  560. greatest of these all, it's Christ's love.

  561. So just ask right now that the love of Christ would be what

  562. moves you in this. Confess.

  563. Confess before the throne what you've been moved by that isn't

  564. moving you.

  565. I'm not asking you to try harder, to be better at this

  566. mission. God is asking you this morning to just get the right

  567. fuel in the tank. To let him fill you up, to let the love of

  568. Christ fill your heart so that then you can go and love the

  569. lost like Jesus.

  570. Lord Jesus, this morning we do confess that there's There's

  571. been a lot of ways in which we've tried to move out on

  572. Search And Rescue, to serve as witnesses of the kingdom, to

  573. seek after those who are far from you, and in that,

  574. experiencing the lostness and the peril of it.

  575. God, I confess that even in my own heart, just after hearing

  576. your word this morning, After hearing this, that there's so

  577. many ways in which I am serving in this Search And Rescue

  578. mission as an anxious soul trying to build my own ego.

  579. Lord God, I confess that this morning, and I pray that my

  580. brothers and sisters would confess as well, ways in which

  581. the fuel in their hearts have soured.

  582. God, I pray that you would hear our cries, that you would empty

  583. us so that we can be refueled with everything that we need for

  584. this mission as you've tasked us with.

  585. God, would you help us to see again and again the sobering

  586. urgency to be filled up with that, to be filled up with this

  587. sacred duty that we've been responsible for, we've been

  588. tasked with, to be filled up with an ambition that cannot be

  589. quenched for the mission, but most of all, Most of all, God,

  590. would you fill us up on your love for us, on your love for

  591. them, for those who are far from you.

  592. Because, Jesus, we want to be effective and efficient in this.

  593. We want to be able to bless those who curse us. We want to

  594. be able to persuade those who mock us. We want to be able to

  595. love those who hate us.

  596. So would you refuel us this morning, clear the gunk that

  597. jams us up as we present ourselves to you because we want

  598. to serve you in this mission. I pray all this in Jesus' name.

  599. Amen.
