5/31/26 - Psalm 62:5-8: We Trust God - Steve Gee

This morning we're looking at Psalm 62, and really focal text would be Psalm 62, verses 5 through 8, titled We Trust God.

Psalms 62:5–8

By way of inter uh illustration, if uh, you know, so kids are off of school.

I don't know if you've noticed that the roads aren't parking lots right now, and uh so uh like our kids are just hanging out at home and they get hungry all the time, constantly hungry, constantly, constantly consuming calories, because their bodies are like hummingbird bodies, I guess, just you know, fast, metabolism, and you know, kind of like a hummingbird, they fight each other for food.

But you know, when it when one of my children, so let's say one of my kids come in and they say, Hey, uh, I'm I'm hungry, I'm really hungry, and uh we've we've banned the word starving, because you know, they'll say, I'm starving, and I've said, No, you're not.

I don't think you know what that word means.

Uh, but you know, I'm hungry, and uh the so I say, okay, yeah, yeah, great, great, great.

I just got back from Sam's Club.

We have 37 pounds of chicken nuggets in our freezer.

Uh so you're in luck.

Uh you can get that.

We have a dolly that will carry the nuggets for you, and so uh go grab the chicken nuggets.

And you know, child says, Okay, great, I'm gonna get the chicken nuggets, and then let's say, like, later that afternoon, I see them again, and they're like, they're like, uh, well, I mean, not first of all, they get hungry quick.

But let's say, like, oh, I I feel I haven't eaten, I, you know, I'm I'm I'm really feeling malnourished now.

I'm starting to get headaches, I'm so hungry.

I'm like, whoa whoa, I told you there is a lot, a gross amount of chicken products in our freezer.

Like, why haven't you that that will help you?

And they said, oh no, I got the chicken nuggets out.

I opened them, I read the instructions, I read the 75 ingredients in a piece of chicken.

Uh, you know, I read all of that and I looked, I know how to make them, I memorized how to make them six minutes in the air fryer, flip over, do another four minutes.

I memorized it, I can recite it.

Like, I know all about chicken nuggets and all the things that are in them.

Open the bag, and you know, uh, they're actually in my pocket.

Look at all my, look at all my I got cargo pants on, look at all my all my tots and my chicken nuggets, look what I got here.

Uh and so uh they're showing you all the chicken nuggets, and you're like, what are you doing?

What are you doing?

That's right, Phillips.

You're supposed to eat these.

You're supposed to eat these.

Why did you, why did you study them and memorize the instructions and know everything about them, but you never consumed it?

The great danger of living in a Christian culture is that the word of God becomes just words that we memorize, try to understand, and then we put it in our pockets.

And we're walking around malnourished and unable to walk.

We read the Bible during the week, hear a sermon preached, and memorize it and affirm it, but do we actually trust it?

And I'm not saying that growing in faith and trust is a work of man, but I am saying, do we ever actually slow down and truly consider it?

Do we give the Spirit an opportunity to open the eyes of our hearts?

Do we press God's truth into our daily lives?

Do we filter our thoughts and circumstances through what we say we believe?

Do we ever taste and see that the Lord is good?

Again, it'd be strange if my son would have said, or my child would have said, Hey, I listened to a 40-minute podcast about chicken nuggets.

But why am I still so hungry?

Is that what did you actually consider?

At the end of, let me read our focal text here.

Psalm 62, 5 through 8.

For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress.

I shall not be shaken.

On God rest my salvation and my glory, my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Trust in him at all times, O people, pour out your heart before him.

God is a refuge for us.

Selah.

The word Selah is a hard word for commentators, for theologians, for biblical scholars to translate as far as what it actually means.

But most commentators will gather around a meaning some uh uh uh in the in the realm of saying that the word selah in the Psalms is a silence as the words fall away.

To sit and consider what was just spoken.

I even thought, I was like, oh, we should have called our time of consider that we do at each end of each service, Selah.

That that would be a time where we all pause and say, Do you hear what God just said?

Could we just taste what God just said instead of putting in our pockets, going away, memorizing it, knowing it into Greek, understanding how to translate it and parse it?

Could we just for a second enjoy the meal?

Selah.

Breathe.

Consider, think about.

And so this morning, may the words of God not be like water that washes over you and goes down a drain, but rather a spring of water that you drink deeply from, a water that refreshes and invigorates your soul and shapes your life.

May the truths we affirm move past our lips and into the depths of our hearts.

May we slow down and feast on these truths, allowing them to nourish us.

May the words of the living God to his people be a lamp to our feet and a light to our daily path.

Today's passage is from David, and his trust is in God.

It is more than just words that he writes.

His trust in God is the foundation of his life and not just decorations on the wall of his house.

This is a psalm of David.

We don't know the exact circumstances that he wrote it in, except that he was being pursued by his enemies.

He needs more than words in his pockets and bumper stickers on his chariot.

He needs to be nourished by the truth of who God is and who he is in respect.

So then, we'll look at those four verses.

But first let's pray.

Heavenly Father, thank you for this day.

Father God, we pray that your words from the hand of your servant David, a man whose heart was uh after you.

Father God, I pray that these words would not wash over us, that we would drink deeply from these, we would feast on these words.

We would not just memorize these words, we would uh taste these words and feast on these words and be nourished by these words, Father God.

We need the work of your spirit to open the eyes of our hearts to do these things.

May our necks not be stiff and may our hearts not hearts not be hard.

We need you.

Thank you for your son Jesus Christ who makes this prayer in all things possible.

He is our amen.

Okay, so to give you a purpose statement for today, we trust God, and therefore we wait in full expectation of his presence, we walk in the confidence of his salvation, and we worship him in our weakness.

So see that.

We trust God, therefore, we wait in full expectation of his presence, we walk in the confidence of his salvation, and we worship him in our weakness.

We trust God, therefore.

Three things.

So, three things.

Our waiting, our salvation, and our trust.

Our waiting, our salvation and our trust.

First, our waiting.

Verse five, for God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

In the midst of chaos and confusion and war going on around him, David comes to a conclusion.

He concludes that he would take all of his thoughts, concerns, and anxieties to God alone.

If David is like me, though, I would have exhausted every piece of logic and solution I could think of before conceding this.

As his enemies pursued him, I wonder if David gripped his sling and said, I've done it before.

I just need a brook with five rocks.

That's what I would have done.

What's worked in the past.

How can I do this?

And what is revealed in this exercise is that while I do trust God, there are many other things that I trust before I go to Him alone.

And way too often, it is only when everything else fails me or fails to comfort or satisfy me that I find myself saying, Okay, God, I trust you.

I have nothing else.

But David here is saying that not only does he trust God alone, but it is, it is God alone.

There can be no other competing trusts or confidences in our lives.

God is not meant to be simply the lighthouse in the storms of our lives.

He's meant to be the light we need as we walk around in the familiar of our lives.

He's not simply meant to be a life raft in a catastrophe.

He is meant to be the boat we make our entire journeys on and in.

David says his soul waits in silence.

I want to look at three aspects of waiting as far as the Bible, uh as far as what it means in the Bible.

First of all, waiting upon God is not a passive posture.

Waiting upon God is an activity.

It is not letting go and letting God, that's not biblical.

It is not sitting on a couch waiting for a lightning strike.

You remember Acts 1.4, it says this, and while this is what Jesus says, and while staying with them, he's talking to the disciples, he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which he said, You heard from me.

He tells the disciples when he's about to ascend, Jesus Christ is about to ascend, he says, wait for the promise, wait for the power.

And after Christ ascended, they came together and they prayed.

They did not scatter in their waiting, they gathered as the first Christian church.

Waiting was not indecision, it was the decision.

Does that make sense?

Sometimes we wait because I don't know, like I just, you know, whatever, like I'm just gonna be complacent, I'm just gonna sit on the couch, I'm gonna do whatever, whatever, maybe something will happen.

Waiting is the decision we must make.

We wait upon God, it is an activity.

Second, he is waiting in silence.

We're talking about David here.

This does not mean that he just keeps his mouth shut, it means that his soul is quieted, it is inclined toward God.

So, yes, prayers, seeking godly counsel, he's waiting.

Doesn't mean he keeps his mouth shut, it means that his soul is quieted in all of these things.

He prays with a confidence and an expectation of the God who meets them, meets him in all things.

So waiting is not indecision, it is the decision.

Waiting is also not keeping your mouth shut, it is uh it is a posture of a silent soul, a quieted soul, a soul that can cannot be moved.

And then thirdly, and most importantly, in the Bible, waiting on God is in this present age is what transforms us.

Waiting is not just about what we receive at the end of the waiting, it's about who we become in the waiting.

I I know you know this, how could you not know this?

But have you ever been on an elevator in the last 15 years?

Maybe not.

I mean, if you were at the church plant that we first started at, you might have been in that elevator, although I wouldn't ever recommend it to anybody because it broke a lot.

But if you've ever been in an elevator, what happens in modern elevators besides going up and down?

What does everybody do?

They grab their phones.

Well, like it's it's 30 seconds, Kevin.

And we all, myself included, like, oh, like that's when I find out that I left my phone at home, is when I'm in an elevator.

Or when I have to wait for a second.

Or you could just think about uh at a stoplight.

Like, okay, I'm at a stoplight.

This is a long one.

I'm uh I'm gonna I could probably catch up on the four texts I got on the way here.

Like, I won't text while I drive, but I certainly will text at a stoplight.

Uh you're like, oh, I honked at you the other day.

The light turned green.

Uh uh so yeah, so we don't know how to wait.

We can't even sit at a stoplight.

We have to, we have to get our phone out, we have to do, we have to be productive.

Because in our modern minds, man waits for no one.

We don't wait for anything.

We don't know how to wait.

We must redeem every second.

To simply wait is not just boredom, it is to fall behind.

Waiting is wasting in our minds.

Waiting is not wasting.

Take a breath.

Keep the phone in your pocket.

Let's not panic for a second.

May our souls be quiet.

May we gather and pray.

We are the church.

We are not modern man.

Waiting on God is entirely upside down from our natural inclinations because waiting is not wasting.

Rather, it is in the waiting that we are becoming.

So often God uses the moments between the moments to form his people.

It is in the waiting that our faith is revealed and tested and then strengthened.

Think about it.

Think about your own life.

Think about when you when you feel like maybe you grew in Christ.

Was it in the receiving or was it in the waiting?

We see it in the Israelites in their wilderness journey.

Every time they faced a challenge, when they had the choice to seek the Lord and wait for God's provision, they chose to grumble, complain, and even build an idol of gold.

Just for a second.

Remember that?

They were waiting.

They got tired of waiting.

They got fearful in their waiting.

They said, Aaron, build an idol.

Remember what Aaron did, what Moses did with the idol later?

He crushed it up.

And he made them consume it.

Going back to the chicken nuggets.

Why?

I mean, there's reasons.

I mean, we could come up with a thousand reasons, but most probably.

God's saying, does your idol nourish you?

Taste and see what your idol tastes like.

Taste and see what gold can do for you.

Taste it.

Go ahead.

Consume it.

Drink up your idol.

See if it satisfies your soul.

See if you find shalom.

See if you find peace in drinking gold dust.

It does not.

Please don't try it.

They believed that the trials of the Red Sea, their enemies, and their hunger were all obstacles for them to manage rather than opportunities to trust the God who freed them by the blood of the Lamb.

Their souls were far from silently trusting.

They demanded answers and made assumptions about the character of their God in the waiting.

They could not see that in the pause, God was inviting them to Himself.

He was beckoning them to seek His presence and trust.

They believed their true restoration found its fulfillment in a land of promise.

The Garden of Eden's shalom was not found in the fruit tree.

The Garden of Eden was simply the sanctuary in which man walked with his God.

Man's home is not a place to live, it is a presence to be enjoyed.

And also, we must be careful, because it is for us as well.

Otherwise, if we don't understand this idea of what it means to wait, otherwise we will rush into the silence, we will fill it with activity, with pursuits, with attempts to manipulate our circumstances instead of taking it to the Lord.

We will look toward assurances of silver and gold or the confidence of our own wisdom, and we'll put and we'll pull levers and turn knobs.

And when things take longer than next day delivery, our minds spiral into the depths of the sea, and we begin to doubt the Lord as we seek relief, because we still believe that waiting is wasting, and that the loss of shalom, when actually, we don't lose shalom in the waiting.

Actually, it is an invitation to shalom.

But here in Psalm 62, David, a man who is described as a man after God's own heart, not because he was perfect, but because in his weakness, in his need, he knew how to wait on the Lord.

Even when those who sought to kill him were vulnerable, he did not take things into his own hands.

He waited for the Lord's timing as he sought the Lord's presence.

David became the king, he was meant to be in the wilderness caves, not in the palace he was promised.

Does that make sense?

He didn't become a king when he ascended the throne, he became a king when he waited for the Lord in the wilderness.

The children of Israel were being formed in the wilderness, not in the promised land.

And so it is for us too.

As we wait.

As we wait for the return of the Lord, as we wait for the daily things in our lives, we hear the invitation of God.

And David goes on to write here that is his hope is from him.

In other words, he doesn't look horizontally for his ultimate hope.

He's not looking in his mirror and saying, I got this.

He's not looking at his fellow man and saying, We got this.

He looks to the heavens.

And he is not looking for a wish from a star, he's looking to his God with full expectation.

And as I thought about that thought, or as I thought about this, I thought, what a grace, what a grace of God that man would be brought to the end of himself, that the trajectory of his eyes would shift from himself to his God, that he would see clearly that what he truly needs cannot be found in the things he owns or the comfort of his circumstances.

And in that realization, in that hardship, he must look elsewhere.

He must look outside of himself.

Again, no one wants to or should want to be hiding in the wilderness.

But when there are seasons in which God's grace leads us to the back 40, may we seek him there and declare that our hope is not distant.

Rather, all of these things are leading us to himself.

And our souls are quieted, even in the caves.

Secondly, our salvation.

We'll move faster.

I think.

Verse 6 and 7.

He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress.

I shall not be shaken.

On God rest my salvation and my glory.

My mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Redemption Church, nourished, be nourished by this.

He alone is my rock and my salvation.

Salvation is help and deliverance.

So God only is David's confidence in help and deliverance.

The image of the rock should bring to mind an immovable foundation.

As we all know from living in this area, the house is only as good as the soil it's built on.

You know that?

The most expensive house built on a clay soil is destined for failure.

Brick facades might look sturdy, but they crack and crumble when the foundation shifts.

David's hope for salvation is not found in the stones that fill his slingshot.

It is found only in the rock who goes with him.

And he declares that on God rests his salvation.

The word rest carries the weight of quieted or made still.

So on God, the work, the anxiety, the concern of his salvation is quieted.

He looks to God and says, My soul is quieted.

The work of my salvation, which is what we all actually want.

We want the presence of God.

We're trying to return to a place we've never been, but somehow is hardwired into us, that is, Eden.

Not the garden of fruit, but the presence of God.

And our pursuit of that garden that seems like we've been guarded against, has found its amen, has found its entry, has found its gate through the person of Jesus Christ.

It's quieted.

We have entry.

And we also know that David only knew what David only knew in shadow that the rock of his salvation is Jesus, the King of glory who would come from his line.

As Justin unfolded a couple weeks ago from Matthew 11, we are invited into the presence of our Savior to go and find rest.

That is, to go to him and have our souls quieted, to be made still in our pursuit of salvation, deliverance, and help.

It is through our union with Christ, the cornerstone of God, the rock of our refuge, that we can then walk into and through the wilderness valleys with our souls already at rest.

As we not yet wait.

As I thought about this, I wondered about the current alternatives in our lives.

What are the things in this day and age that also make invitations to us?

And hear me.

The invitation of Jesus Christ that Justin preached on a few weeks about a few weeks ago about come to me, all who are weary.

You are receiving that invitation from every source in the world.

Every source in the world is saying, Hey, just come to me.

Are you weary?

Are you tired?

Are you sad?

Are you hungry?

Are you whatever?

Fill in the blank.

I got you.

You'll find rest in me.

What else is saying?

Come to me, all who are weary, and I'll give you rest.

I can bear the weight of your groaning and satisfy the thirst of your souls.

Sometimes it's the law.

If I just obey, if I make myself clean, then I can find rest.

Sometimes it's the appetites of our flesh.

If I have this or that, I'll find stillness, the search will cease, and my soul will slack.

A vacation is my soul's rest.

A career is my rock, a relationship will complete me, a smoother face will fulfill my want.

A community of friends will be my refuge.

After all, aren't we just chemicals seeking the right formulation of dopamine?

How can we argue that the fleeting pleasures of our addictions don't at least lead us to a moment of stillness, even if the next morning is filled with great regret?

And David, the one who sought salvation in the arms of that which was forbidden, declares, It is only in God that my soul is made still.

It is only in his embrace that I find refuge.

That's where the joy of his salvation is restored.

Not in the arms of Bathsheba, but in the arms of his Lord.

Thirdly and finally, we trust.

And this is where we must consume, we must eat, we must feast.

Trust is a heart posture, it is not something.

Just for our lips, it is for our hearts.

So David writes this trust in him at all times, O people, pour out your heart before him.

God is a refuge for us.

This week, as I thought about what it means to truly trust in the midst of chaos and confusion and in times of calm and comfort, I realized how hard this was.

It goes against all of our natural inclinations.

It is hard for the flesh to rest in trust of God.

Preaching the steadfast love, compassion, and care of God in any circumstances needs more than a Sunday afternoon or Sunday morning.

It needs a Tuesday afternoon and a Friday morning reminder.

And quite literally, a brother in Christ preached this text via preached this truth via a text to me on Friday morning.

He wrote this Jesus is in this moment and he cares for you.

I was spiraling.

And I got this text from a brother in Christ.

Jesus is in this moment.

He cares.

We need that on Friday mornings.

We need that on Tuesday afternoons and not just on Sunday mornings.

These things aren't meant for our lips and for our pockets, they're meant for our hearts.

So therefore, trust him.

Amen.

And immediately the capacity, when I got that text, immediately, immediately, the capacity of my lungs increased.

My shoulders went slack and my soul found rest.

It was quieted.

But again, the words Jesus is in the moment and he cares aren't just characters or are just characters on a screen.

They must be trusted to provide relief.

They must be considered and tasted to nourish us.

We must put our actual weight on these truths and promises.

We must, by the grace of God, believe that the Father who sent the Son in love, and the Son who obeyed in love, and the Spirit who indwells in love will not now abandon us in the waves of questions that we have.

And David finishes verse 8 with this very important exhortation.

He says, Pour out, this is great.

I don't know if you've seen this text yet.

You should read it for yourself.

If you have a Bible, look at it.

Psalm 62, A B.

O people, that's y'all, church, pour out your heart before Him.

In a Christian culture, in an affluent culture, in a I got this culture, an American culture, we are not good at this.

The Bible does not say, keep your fears, keep your shame, keep your unbelief, keep your doubts, keep your worries and anxieties from God.

God doesn't say deal with it.

He says, pour them out before him.

Phone call, a text, a conversation with man.

Where do we look for comfort?

David says we should pour these things out before the Lord.

I'm not saying we're not meant to talk to our Christian community and bear one another's burdens, but have we even taken it to the Lord?

And on the other side of that, as a Christian community, we remember that we are meant to be a people who lead each other to God and not to ourselves.

We love each other well by pointing others to Christ.

I know when someone shares their struggles with you, it can encourage you that not only do they trust you, but also that you are not alone in your struggles.

I get it.

But understand, that is not the destination.

If you come to me with a broken leg, I'm not gonna invite you and rub chicken nuggets on it.

That's weird.

And I'm not gonna sit and tell you, be of good cheer.

I've broken my leg too.

We're the same.

Rather, what makes me a good friend is to go with you to the doctor who can mend your broken leg.

It's silly, but some of us do that with our Christian counseling.

When friends come over and they have problems, you say, Oh, listen, it's okay.

It's okay.

I have that same problem, that same sin.

It's okay.

Oh, okay, I feel so much better.

Do you feel better?

Yeah, I feel better because we're both sinners.

This is great.

This is great.

You want to go have lunch?

You would never say that to someone with a broken leg.

You would say, I'm so sorry, I did break my leg once.

I know it hurts.

Let's go to a doctor.

Let's go to the one who can actually mend us.

I'm gonna come with you.

Because my leg hurts too.

And you go together to the doctor.

This is what the Christian community says.

Let's go to the great physician.

Let's go to the great counselor.

I'm with you in this.

You are not alone.

But he has not left us alone.

Again, the goal of the church is not that this would be a place that is encouraged by the fact that we are all sinners.

The goal of the church is that we would walk with each other toward Christ.

Our true encouragement is not commiseration, it is Christ.

Whatever valley or green pasture you are walking through in this moment, whatever is occupying the news feeds of your soul, hear this.

Pour it out before him.

Go to him, and also surround yourself with friends who will stir you up to God.

That is true Christian community.

And I say this to our new graduates.

When you get to your place where you're going, find Christian friends who are not just gonna say, don't worry about it, it's okay, we all sin.

Find Christian friends who say, It's okay, I sin too, but you know what?

I know somebody who can take care of these sins.

Can we go before God the Father together?

Get Christian friends who lead you to Christ every day.

Not lead you to themselves as the destination of your complaints and concerns and fears.

Be there, but then go there.

And also in the pouring out of our hearts we worship.

This is our offering.

Hear this, this is important.

When we pour out our hearts, it is worship.

It is an offering to God.

When we cast our cares upon Him, we are declaring that He alone is our rock of salvation.

Again, you break your leg, you come to me, I say, Hey, man, that stinks.

I hate that.

My leg hurts too.

I've broken a leg before.

Not actually, it was a metaphor.

Y'all get it.

Uh and so I'm not bragging that I've not broken a leg, by the way.

Uh uh I'm just very fragile.

I'm very cautious.

You don't care.

Okay, and so uh I I would I would then go to the best doctor I know.

Right?

I would say, hey, let's go.

I know a guy who's a great doctor, he can fix this.

When I do that, what am I saying?

I'm saying that doctor is a good doctor and he can heal you.

When we pour out our hearts before him, we are worshiping.

When we pour out our hearts before his throne, we proclaim that he alone is our refuge, that he alone is the water and the rock that quenches our thirst, that he is the new morning bread from heaven that we gather each day, that he is the rock solid foundation of our salvation, that he is the rest of our vacations, that he is the stillness of the waters of our soul, and that he is the presence of God's promises.

Praise him, pursue him.

All right, in conclusion, and it's brief, seriously.

Don't trust in me, though.

Redemption Church, when we say we trust God alone, may it never just be lip service.

When God told us he loves us, he is not asking us to believe something we can't see.

He is not a politician hoping to say whatever he needs, uh, whatever he needs to in order to get your vote.

Instead, he is the king who chose us and paid the ultimate price to secure us.

Romans 5.8 says this, but God shows, God's love is not lip service, but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

He shows us.

He doesn't just say, Hey, I love you.

You'll be okay, I love you.

I go with you in the darkest valley.

No, he showed us by sending his son Jesus Christ, the person that every uh ancient historian who was around that time, even once who didn't believe, uh attribute or attest to, accounted for.

God showed us his love for us, in that while you were still an enemy, while your mind was still hostile to God, while you were still behind the dividing wall, while you were still outside the temple, while you were still lame, waiting for God, hoping for charity and you received uh restoration, while you were in that condition, Christ died for you.

He showed you.

If God did not even spare his own son, why would he spare anything else?

You have a concern, you have a worry, you're worried about tomorrow, you don't know what's gonna happen, career, job, whatever.

You're so concerned, you're so concerned.

He sent his son Jesus Christ.

That's the measure.

He shows us.

We have been shown the love of God.

So then, therefore, pour out your hearts of fear, frustration, desire, impatience, and unbelief before God, and pause and consider and be in awe.

Say law that this God whom we worship invites you into his presence and has made a way in Christ for us to enter into the throne room of his mercy and receive and drink in when we are need.

Praise him, trust him.

Let's pray.

Heavenly Father, thank you for this day that you gave us.

Father God, you have given us minds that can understand words and think about things and memorize things.

Father God, I pray that you would give us your spirit to help us see these things, that the eyes of our hearts would be open.

But Father God, I also know that so often I can grieve the work of the Holy Spirit by just moving on to the next thing, by pulling out my cell phone at the stoplight and not even considering what I just heard.

Father God, may we silence all of those things now in this time of consideration.

May we think about what it means to wait.

What it means that in the waiting we are actually becoming.

Father God, may we consider that we you are trustworthy, that you are the rock of our salvation and our refuge, that our hope is in you and in you alone.

May we consider all of these things.
