  1. Psalm 107 is Thanksgiving week and Psalm

  2. 107

  3. is a command. It just a command to give

  4. God thanks for the things that he's done

  5. in our lives to make him known and and

  6. it's a reminder that the redeemed of the

  7. Lord has the delightful duty to testify

  8. of his goodness and steadfast love. When

  9. we live with thanksgiving, not just one

  10. day a year, When we live with a heart of

  11. gratitude to God, it's a cure for many

  12. ills. But more important than that, it's

  13. it's the way that we spread the fame of

  14. our God and the things that he has done.

  15. The command to praise is not merely a

  16. command to sing, but to make him known,

  17. to glorify him, to make him famous, to

  18. speak of him, and and particularly for

  19. the redeemed. You know, we all have to

  20. be thankful for. Everybody has things to

  21. be thankful for. We can always give God

  22. thanks. Whether we're a believer, an

  23. unbeliever, God's given us breath. Every

  24. good thing we've ever experienced is a

  25. gift from God. Comes down from God.

  26. People that hate God, God still shows

  27. his loving kindness towards he makes his

  28. son to rise in the evil and on the good.

  29. He sends his rain on the just and the

  30. unjust. People who curse and blasphe the

  31. name of God, yet they have laughter.

  32. They they eat rightful They have they've

  33. been given friends. They've been given

  34. life. They've been given the opportunity

  35. to respond to his goodness. But as

  36. believers, we have something even more

  37. than things to give thankful for. We

  38. have someone to give thankful be

  39. thankful to. We have an an object, a

  40. person that we can give thanks to. And

  41. this is a cure for for many ailments of

  42. the soul. It it's a it's a cure for, for

  43. example,

  44. the entitlement mentality that cannot

  45. but make us miserable. If you're an

  46. entitled individual and you feel that

  47. the world owes you things, you're going

  48. to be an unhappy person because you've

  49. got to constantly have things that

  50. exceed your expectations.

  51. If we can find our contentment in the

  52. Lord, we'll be surprised by joy. But if

  53. you constantly have demands of life that

  54. life doesn't meet, what's going to

  55. happen? You're going to be miserable. It

  56. It's really something that when Paul and

  57. Barnabas were in prison, they were seen.

  58. What kind of people srison

  59. after being beaten and the jailers

  60. listening listen to them praise God and

  61. give God thanks and worshiping God. Who

  62. does that? Do Christians do that? And so

  63. when there was an earthquake and were

  64. released on their chains and the jailer

  65. was ready to kill himself. They said,

  66. "Stop. Do you no harm? We're we're

  67. here." He said, "What must I do to be

  68. saved?"

  69. He knew that they had something they

  70. didn't when the shackles of iron fell

  71. off their wrists as happens in this

  72. psalm also. And he wanted to know, but

  73. he heard them testify first. I think

  74. it's such it's so important that we as

  75. believers testify to God's goodness in

  76. our lives. The way The way that we

  77. witness has more to do with giving God

  78. due credit than it does with our ability

  79. to kind of be in apologetics. And

  80. there's absolutely links to that as

  81. well. But just by testifying of his

  82. goodness and the things that he's done

  83. for us, particularly as redeemed

  84. sinners, not as

  85. redeemed sinners, we can testify of his

  86. goodness. Also, thankfulness is a cure

  87. to hopelessness.

  88. When someone testifies of the low state

  89. that they were in, when they testify of

  90. a miserable condition, as we'll see in

  91. the psalm, there's this pattern. There's

  92. a problem. There's a prayer and then

  93. there's an adation to praise God.

  94. There's a problem. Somebody is in a very

  95. dire situation. And what do they do?

  96. They cry out to God. There's a prayer

  97. and then God heals them. And there's to

  98. testify. When we testify of God's

  99. goodness in our lives and people hear

  100. it, it gives hope.

  101. It's like God saved Jeff. God God

  102. delivered Jeff from alcoholism. And if

  103. you want to use that term, delivered him

  104. from his bondage. If God saved Jeff,

  105. then there's hope for me. Paul said,

  106. "This is a good and faithful saying that

  107. Jesus Christ came into the world to save

  108. sinners of whom I am." And he said,

  109. given that that God's been mercer and

  110. God can be merciful to you, too.

  111. Faithfulness is a

  112. a cure to acquies.

  113. It reminds us that God really does

  114. interact in believer's life. He's not we

  115. don't we don't serve a philosophy, a

  116. moral philosophy. We serve a living God

  117. who actually cares for us and he he

  118. hears our cries and he delivers us. It

  119. builds faith in the body. Lovelessness.

  120. Thanksgiving is a cure for lovelessness.

  121. When we reflect on God's steadfast love,

  122. what he's done for us and the things

  123. that he has provided for us, it makes

  124. the heart grateful, thankful, and we

  125. fall in love with all with God all over

  126. again. Bitterness and unforgiveness.

  127. A lot of people, they're trapped in

  128. bitterness and unforgiveness because

  129. they can't see God's providential hand.

  130. They can't see God in the hardship of

  131. their life. The Christian knows, right?

  132. Romans 3:28, that God works all things

    Romans 3:28

  133. together for good to those who love God,

  134. to those who are the called according to

  135. his purpose. Christians have to suffer.

  136. Unbelievers have to suffer. We have

  137. someone to give thanks to. And we have

  138. someone that we know is working all

  139. things together for our good and it

  140. enables us to forgive to move on to not

  141. be down. So I want to get into the psalm

  142. this morning. If you stand with me now

  143. for the reading of God's word we'll read

  144. in Psalm 107 and

  145. oh give thanks to the Lord for he is

  146. good for his steadfast love endures

  147. forever. Let the redeemed of Yahweh say

  148. he has redeemed from trouble and

  149. gathered in from the land from the east

  150. and from the west from the north and

  151. from the south.

  152. Some wandered in desert waste, finding

  153. no way to a city to dwell in hungering

  154. and thirsting their soul fainted within

  155. them. Then they cried to the Lord in

  156. their trouble and he delivered them from

  157. their distress. He led them by a

  158. straight way till they reached the city

  159. to dwell in. Let them thank the Lord for

  160. his steadfast love, for his wonderful

  161. works for the children of man. For he

  162. satisfies the longing soul and the

  163. hungry soul he fills with good things.

  164. Some sat in darkness and in the shadow

  165. of death, prisoners in affliction and in

  166. iron. For they have rebelled against the

  167. words of God and sterned the counsel of

  168. the most high. So he bowed their hearts

  169. down with hard labor. They fell down

  170. with none to help. Then they cried to

  171. the Lord in their trouble and he

  172. delivered them from their distress. He

  173. brought them out of darkness and the

  174. shadow of death and burst their bonds

  175. apart. Let them thank the Lord for his

  176. steadfast love, for his wondrous works

  177. for the children of man, for he

  178. shattered the doors of bronze and cut

  179. into the bars of iron.

  180. Some were fools through their sinful

  181. ways and because of their iniquity

  182. suffered affliction. They loathed any

  183. kind of food and they drew near to the

  184. gates of death. Then they cried to the

  185. Lord in their trouble and he delivered

  186. them from their distress. He sent out

  187. his word and healed them and delivered

  188. them from their destruction. Let them

  189. thank the Lord for his steadfast love,

  190. for his wondrous works through the

  191. children of man, and let them offer

  192. sacrifices of thanksgiving and tell of

  193. his deeds and songs of joy. Some went

  194. down to the sea and ships doing business

  195. on the great waters. They saw the deeds

  196. of the Lord, his wondrous works in the

  197. deep. For he commanded and raised the

  198. storming wind, which lifted up the waves

  199. of the sea. They mounted up the heaven.

  200. They went down to the depth. Their

  201. courage melted away in their evil heart.

  202. They reeled and staggered like drunken

  203. men and were within. Then they cried to

  204. the Lord in their trouble and he

  205. delivered them from their distress. He

  206. made the storm be still and the waves of

  207. the sea were hushed. Then they were glad

  208. that the waters were quiet and he

  209. brought them to their desired.

  210. Let them thank the Lord for his

  211. steadfast love for wondrous works to the

  212. children of men. Let them extol him in

  213. the congregation of the people and

  214. praise him in the assembly of the

  215. elders. He turns rivers into a desert,

  216. springs of water into thirsty ground, a

  217. fruitful land into a salty waste because

  218. of the evil of its inhabitants.

  219. He turns a desert into pools of water, a

  220. parched land into springs of water, and

  221. there he lets the hungry dwell and they

  222. establish a city to live in. He sews and

  223. plant vineyards and fruitful yield. By

  224. his blessings they multiply greatly and

  225. he does not let their livestock

  226. diminish. They are and brought low

  227. through oppression, evil, and sorrow. He

  228. pours contempt on princes and makes them

  229. wander in trackless ways. He raises up

  230. the needy out of affliction and makes

  231. the families like flock. The upright see

  232. it and are glad and all wickedness shuts

  233. his mouth. Whoever is wise, let him

  234. attend these things. Let them consider

  235. the steadfast love of the Lord. Let us

  236. pray. Oh Lord God, we thank you to the

  237. Lord for your

  238. love. We thank you, Father. Even though

  239. we are often wishywashy and pickled in

  240. our desires, doubleminded in our in our

  241. desires to serve you. We we all sin in

  242. many ways, but you are steadfast. Your

  243. love is everlasting. Your mercies are

  244. new every morning. Lord, when we

  245. afflicted because of our sin, and we cry

  246. out to you, you are a gracious God. You

  247. hear us. You forgive us. You restore us.

  248. We thank you, God, that you are so

  249. intimately acquainted with the ways of

  250. the of the righteous, your people. And

  251. we pray, Lord, this morning that our

  252. heart would take courage and also Lord

  253. that you would put within us that that

  254. desire to testify and make you known for

  255. you are worthy,

  256. my friend.

  257. You may be seated. So again, in in this

  258. there's a there's a pattern where people

  259. breakers. These are believers who have

  260. fallen into sin and their sin has led

  261. them into chastisement. It's sanctum.

  262. They they they go through a variety of

  263. problems and and then what happens is in

  264. the midst of their affliction, what do

  265. they do? They turn to God. They cry out

  266. to God and God restores them and heals

  267. them. and and and

  268. this adoration repeatedly. I like the

  269. King James version when it says, "Oh,

  270. that men would praise the Lord for his

  271. goodness and his wonderful works for the

  272. children of men." It says that the way

  273. it's worded in the King James, "Oh, that

  274. men would praise the Lord." It's like,

  275. you know what? We need to hear the

  276. testimony of God-fearing people who have

  277. been delivered. But a lot of times

  278. people receive some great deliverance in

  279. their lives and they tell one or two

  280. people instead of sharing it with the

  281. congregation later on. He's going to say

  282. share it. Share it before the church and

  283. church and state before the church and

  284. before the elders of the land. Tell of

  285. the good things that God has done in

  286. your lives because people need hope. You

  287. know, I have a little thing that a

  288. little I don't think I'm nicking but I

  289. really can't stand most Christian

  290. movies. understand reality. I really

  291. don't like them. Low quality, but it's

  292. not it's not the acting that bugs me.

  293. It's not the it's the testimony that

  294. bugs me. Since the 80s, you know,

  295. put out these movies and it's always

  296. some rebellious guy who or some girl

  297. ends up falling in love with a horse

  298. first and a boy later and and they're

  299. out there and somebody's a Christian and

  300. they're a bunch of good and the guy

  301. finally says, "You know what? You're

  302. right. He becomes a Christian. It's just

  303. the same madeup testimony over and over

  304. again recent years. God God is not dead.

  305. Oh, I hated that movie. A madeup story.

  306. Didn't even have the gospel in it to be

  307. real with you. It was just kind of like

  308. a madeup testimony movie and Christians

  309. went out and bought it. I guess

  310. Hollywood figured out, wow, we got a I

  311. just can't believe a person that's

  312. really been redeemed by the Lord wrote

  313. that script and left the name of Jesus

  314. out. I just can't believe it. But

  315. anyway, I

  316. that bothers me the most. There are so

  317. many wonderful testimonies of believers

  318. whose lives have been changing. Physical

  319. healing, financial provision,

  320. deliverance from addiction. They're all

  321. over the place. They're in this room.

  322. They're all over the people whose lives

  323. have been transformed. And you're going

  324. to make up a movie. It's like, "Oh,

  325. yeah. I need them to make up that plot

  326. line." Yeah. But the the plot line of

  327. redemption is all around us. If only

  328. would

  329. It said, "Yes, this is what I was. Then

  330. I met Jesus, and now this is who I am

  331. because of who he is." That's what

  332. people need to hear. They need to hear

  333. real genuinely redeemed people

  334. testifying of good God's goodness and

  335. his love and his his graciousness.

  336. People in the church suffer struggling

  337. with sin and they think, "I'm alone in

  338. my struggle. I'm the only one who's

  339. struggling with sexual. I'm the only

  340. struggling with pride because other

  341. people don't talk about it and they they

  342. think I'm the only one that's struggling

  343. with this but how great how wonderful it

  344. is. I love on our camp outs every year

  345. on Saturday night we go out you all most

  346. of you all know this if you never been

  347. to a camp out in the fall we don't have

  348. church here we have it out in the

  349. wilderness and I love it every year

  350. whoever wants to get out and share their

  351. testimony can get up and do so and I've

  352. heard such real genuine

  353. not just like the embarrassment goes

  354. away and real honest sharing of people's

  355. stories and you hear about their

  356. brokenness and how Christ has intervened

  357. in their life and made a difference and

  358. um that's been you know it was it was a

  359. testimony service that afterwards my son

  360. two years ago said I I want to get

  361. baptized

  362. kind of on the fence wondering for for

  363. years going through it and then he hears

  364. the testimonies of things and it's just

  365. so amazing every We need to hear the

  366. redeemed say so. We need to hear the

  367. world needs to hear the redeemed. So he

  368. says we serve a living God. Allah is not

  369. a living God. You know what Muslims when

  370. they pray? They pray these replicitious

  371. prayers out of doing five times a day

  372. and the world marvels at their

  373. discipline. But they cannot testify as

  374. so many Christians can. I cried to God

  375. and he healed me of a physical

  376. affliction. I cried to God and he

  377. delivered me out of my financial stress.

  378. I God I cried out to God and God

  379. delivered me from my addictions. We

  380. serve the only living God that there is.

  381. Oh that men would praise the Lord for

  382. his goodness and for his wonderful works

  383. for the children of man. The world needs

  384. to hear your testimony.

  385. And that's repeated in this again and

  386. again. Let's look at verse one. Oh, give

  387. thanks to the Lord for he is good for

  388. his steadfast love endures forever.

  389. That's always a reason that the

  390. Christian can be thankful. always you

  391. may you may be a burned victim in a

  392. hospital suffering this somewhere burned

  393. over 90% of your body and you still have

  394. breath and you have pain and you're in

  395. agony but you can still look to the Lord

  396. and say he is good his steadfast love

  397. endures forever you can cry out to him

  398. cry out to him your your affliction will

  399. not last forever there's always a happy

  400. ending to the genuine believer holy

  401. always his steadfast love endures

  402. forever. I love this word forever in

  403. Hebrew. The word love here is

  404. I like that worded is a versatile word.

  405. Sometimes it's translated in mercy.

  406. Sometimes it's translated as of love

  407. because the Hebrew word

  408. is a bigger word than translates both

  409. God's love. But that has another word

  410. next to it which means eternity to mean

  411. the universe. So the the enduring is

  412. everlasting eternal it's eternal

  413. unending uh the universe isn't big

  414. enough to contain love. That's this idea

  415. of they got to put it into weakness. I'm

  416. sorry the weakness of the English

  417. language but it's a great big

  418. mean like eternal eternal steadfast

  419. love. It's consistent. It's there. It's

  420. new every morning. As long as you're on

  421. this side of the grave, God's steadfast

  422. love is there when you cry out to him.

  423. What a beautiful thing. He is good. He

  424. is a good God. And his steadfast love

  425. endures forever. Now, it has here. I

  426. want to go back and look at this first

  427. phrase. Oh, his faith to the Lord. That

  428. word, interesting enough, was a

  429. vocabulary word that I was working on a

  430. week or two ago. I was working on this

  431. word. Yah is the word. And yada, this

  432. word for giving thanks, but the word yad

  433. means.

  434. So the word give thanks refers to uh to

  435. the lifting of the human

  436. especially to rever or worship with

  437. extended hands. You thought that was

  438. just a charismatic thing. It's not. It's

  439. in the Bible. Worshiping God with hands

  440. lifted up. This word Yah implies

  441. thankfulness with extended hands. Jews

  442. worship and pray with extended hands. In

  443. the book of Daniel, he lifts up his

  444. hands. Even in the New Testament, 1

  445. Timothy 2 says, "I desire then that in

  446. every place the men should pray lifting

  447. holding hands without anger or

  448. quarreling." lifting their hands and

  449. praying. When Moses was praying and

  450. there was a battle between the

  451. Malachites and Hebrews, he lifted up his

  452. knees. They would pray with lifted

  453. hands. They give thanks with lifted

  454. hands. That's the word for thanksgiving

  455. here. It's it's like it's looking to

  456. heaven with lifted hands. Something most

  457. of us don't do much here in in in the

  458. word. We're not much of a hand lifting

  459. congregation. But don't condemn those

  460. that do because it's biblical. It's in

  461. the Bible. So take it up with the Lord.

  462. I guess you like it. Verse two, let the

  463. redeemed of the Lord say so he has

  464. redeemed from trouble and gathered in

  465. the lands from the east and from the

  466. west and the north from the south. Who

  467. are the redeemed? The redeemed are

  468. people. It's a word that refers to like

  469. to buy back a slave. Somebody that has a

  470. huge debt and because of their debt they

  471. had to sell the family farm in Israel.

  472. They could do it for a period of up to

  473. up to 49 years till the year of Jubilee.

  474. They would sell they would sell their

  475. property. They would sell it and

  476. sometimes they'd have to say I have a

  477. debt so big I have to sell myself and my

  478. family into slavery. But someone a

  479. relative usually a relative could be the

  480. redeemer and they could pay the money,

  481. pay off the debt and buy the person's

  482. freedom. So who wants to do this right?

  483. Your your relatives have been foolish.

  484. They gambled away. make foolish choices

  485. and and you bail them out again and

  486. again and again and here they are once

  487. again like I'm sorry bro but man you

  488. just don't learn you're you're on your

  489. own well the this is a situation where

  490. for whatever reason the

  491. needed redemption well we all need

  492. redemption because we all owe a debt we

  493. cannot pay we all owe a debt that we

  494. could never pay we owe we owe God uh

  495. faithful obedience we faithful obedience

  496. and and so he says let the redeemed of

  497. the Lord of Yahweh say so let him speak

  498. up let him testify say so don't still

  499. remain quiet if the Lord has redeemed

  500. you from evil don't remain quiet about

  501. it he has redeemed from trouble and

  502. gathered in from the land from the east

  503. and from the west and from the north and

  504. from the south told Israel said when

  505. you're a faithless nation I will bring

  506. somebody in they'll conquer you and

  507. they'll scatter

  508. all over the world. And he did that

  509. multiple times. He did that with the

  510. Assyrians in the 800 and the 700s in the

  511. 8th century. Brought in the Assyrians

  512. and took Israel captive and scattered

  513. them all over the world. And he did that

  514. also

  515. with Judah. He scattered them and then

  516. he brought a few back to the land. This

  517. makes me think while some people say

  518. David, nobody knows for sure he wrote

  519. this psalm. Some say David, I tend to

  520. think it was written after captivity

  521. after they were returned from Babylon.

  522. These were people who have been

  523. estranged from the holy land. They've

  524. been living in other lands. They've been

  525. living they've been living under the

  526. bondage of the Babylonians and and now

  527. they've been brought back to Israel. And

  528. the work of the Lord say the talk about

  529. it. telling God's goodness. People need

  530. to hear it. So now what we have is a

  531. series of four testimonies of different

  532. scenarios where somebody uh God did they

  533. found themselves in a dire situation.

  534. They cried unto the Lord. The Lord heard

  535. them and then there's this adoration to

  536. testify and the pattern goes again and

  537. again. So let's look at verse four.

  538. Some wandered in desert wicular group of

  539. people that the writer of this song they

  540. he had talked to them. talked to some

  541. people and this is what happened to

  542. them. Some wandered in in desert waste

  543. finding their way to a city to dwell in

  544. hungry and thirsty their soul thanks was

  545. within them. Then they cried to the Lord

  546. in their trouble and he delivered them

  547. from their distress. He led them by a

  548. straight way till they reached the city

  549. to dwell in. Let them thank the Lord for

  550. his steadfast love for his wondrous

  551. works to the children of men. for he

  552. satisfies the longing soul whom the

  553. hungry soul is filled with good things.

  554. So the first scenario we have are some

  555. people that uh they have the ultimate

  556. financial trouble. They're lost. They're

  557. hungry. They're thirsty. They're facing

  558. death. They don't know how to find this

  559. thing. They're turned around in the

  560. wilderness. You get lost in the desert

  561. and you don't have water and you don't

  562. have food. It's only a matter of time

  563. and you're bucketed. yourself. And so

  564. that's what these people did. They're

  565. out. They're lost in the wilderness and

  566. they cried out to God in their trouble

  567. and the Lord heard them. I heard a great

  568. story years ago. Thanksgiving. They're

  569. eating um Thanksgiving with our friends

  570. to Jesus and they had this book of

  571. remarkable occurrences. It was a

  572. genuinely old book. I think it was 16 or

  573. 1700. Very old ancient

  574. maybe 1700s. And They read a story from

  575. them. They would do this kind of thing.

  576. They pull out these antiquated books and

  577. they'll read you a story from years ago

  578. and they have a true story about a group

  579. of people and they were lost at food and

  580. there was no wind and they they were

  581. they cried out to God and they and they

  582. they tell this story of how they were

  583. out there and they cried out to God.

  584. They had no more food. They were on the

  585. verge of starving. They didn't have much

  586. longer left. And they cried out to God

  587. and the next day a dolphin jumped into

  588. her boat and quickly failed us

  589. and over the next then they found that

  590. every day of the week as they cried out

  591. to God this is story every day of the

  592. week a dolphin which I think might be

  593. the dolphin fish not the dolphin man I

  594. think it's the other dolphin every day a

  595. dolphin would jump in their fish except

  596. on Sunday no dolphin jumps in their boat

  597. story and this happened for multiple

  598. weeks before they came in God provided

  599. for them that's supernatural

  600. You can't, you know, you can't expect

  601. that. It's notable, but God God or I

  602. should say, yeah, it's providential. God

  603. provided it for them. And this is a true

  604. story told by some Christians that were

  605. lost in. And it was written in this book

  606. of remarkable occurrences.

  607. God, that's the kind of things he does.

  608. These people were lost in the

  609. wilderness. They didn't have food. They

  610. didn't have water. And he led them by a

  611. straight way till they reached the city

  612. to dwell in. And here the King James

  613. says, "Oh, that Praise the Lord. Verse

  614. eight, for his goodness and for his

  615. wonderful works for the children of men.

  616. So

  617. there there's a testimony. So if God can

  618. provide for somebody in that situation,

  619. can God provide a job for you? Can God

  620. help you pay your electric bill? Can he

  621. help you get out of the situation you're

  622. in? Of course he can. There's hope here.

  623. If you are in dire strait, call out to

  624. God. Repent of your sins. confess your

  625. sins to him, seek him and uh let him do

  626. his things. That's the kind of God we

  627. serve. Okay. Testimony number two, verse

  628. one. Some same phrases

  629. in affliction and in iron. So they have

  630. rebelled against the words of God and

  631. stern the counsel of the most high. So

  632. he bowed their hearts down with hard

  633. labor. They fell down with

  634. Then they cried to the Lord in their

  635. trouble. And he delivered them from

  636. their distress. He brought them out of

  637. darkness from the shadow of death and

  638. burst their bonds apart. Bless them the

  639. Lord for his steadfast love for his

  640. wondrous works for the children of man.

  641. For he shatters the doors of bronze and

  642. cuts into the bars of iron. Now the

  643. first scenario we read, they were

  644. people. They didn't have to stay because

  645. of their sin. They were just in dire.

  646. They cried out to God and God delivered

  647. them. In this situation, it's very

  648. clear. These people are in prison

  649. because of this crime. It's not against

  650. God. They they're in prison. Why? Verse

  651. 11. For they have rebelled against the

  652. word of God and the counsel of the high.

  653. You know, prison has been a blessing for

  654. many many people because many people

  655. come to the knowledge of the Lord in

  656. prison. God delights in saving

  657. prisoners.

  658. repent and turn to him. Now, in the

  659. Bible, God did not set up a prison

  660. system. He didn't that wasn't part of

  661. the Hebrew Republic. I don't know if

  662. they developed later on or if this was

  663. in a foreign land, but in any case,

  664. these people these people had um sinned

  665. against God and they find themselves in

  666. shackles of iron and from the dungeon.

  667. They cry out to God and the Lord heard

  668. them into this trouble in their trouble

  669. and delivered them

  670. So there there's again a pattern here.

  671. They're in prison. They're in a a prison

  672. because of their sin. There's more than

  673. one kind of prison though. There's

  674. there's a lot of people who are living

  675. by guilt, by

  676. by anger, by regret, living in regret.

  677. And it's it's no less a shackle of iron

  678. and bronze than real shackles of iron

  679. and bronze. and and maybe there's real

  680. sin and guilt behind it. But Christ came

  681. to deliver the prison that

  682. he he gets up and he reads the scroll of

  683. the book of the law. He reads from

  684. Isaiah. The spirit Lord God is

  685. responding. He has anointed me to preach

  686. the gospel to poor set the captives

  687. free. What kind of counsel is he talking

  688. about? He's talking about those in

  689. captives to sin. People captivated by

  690. guilt. People who have heavy things

  691. weighing on their conscience. people

  692. that are are are burdened by their their

  693. expression. You know, the world the

  694. world wants you to excuse it or cover it

  695. up, think about something else or drug

  696. it try to get the drugs to just not

  697. think about it. I think I think that

  698. sort of apathy when apathy is your cure.

  699. That's not a very good savior.

  700. If it's no longer feeling anything is

  701. the way you're dealing with your

  702. emotional guilt, that that's not a very

  703. good savior. Jesus didn't didn't merely

  704. come to make us feel apathetic towards

  705. our sin or apathetic towards everything

  706. where we don't feel anything. He He came

  707. to deliver us. He He caused

  708. for his loving kindness and delivering

  709. us from our sins. So cry out to the Lord

  710. and seek him because his ears are open

  711. to us and his steadfast love endure

  712. forever. No, no, man. I've s forgive me.

  713. You know what? You're you're doubting

  714. God's character and love does not

  715. flatter him.

  716. God doesn't want to hear you grow and

  717. say, "I don't know. God can never

  718. forgive me." That's unbelief.

  719. His steadfast love endures forever. Cry

  720. out to him and he forgives and he

  721. restores and he heals. It's therefore

  722. they ask for. All right, that's number

  723. three. Fools with afflictions. Verse 17.

  724. Some were fools through their sinful

  725. ways and because of their iniquity they

  726. suffered afflictions. They lo any kind

  727. of food and they drew near to the gates

  728. of death. Then they cried to the Lord in

  729. their troubles and he delivered them

  730. from their distress. He sent out his

  731. word and healed them and delivered them

  732. from their destruction. Let them thank

  733. the Lord for his steadfast love for his

  734. wondrous works for the children of men

  735. and let them sacrifices of thanksgiving

  736. and tell of the seeds and songs of joy.

  737. Now that's kind of a hard testimony to

  738. say stand up before saying you know I

  739. wasn't a fool. I was a person because I

  740. was a fool. The world wants to make us

  741. all victims

  742. but in this testimony the person was a

  743. fool and they came to realize the Bible

  744. gives very little hope for a fool. Fools

  745. are hard to teach. The Bible says that

  746. that you know I think it's 100 stripes

  747. um say about that

  748. a reute entries more into a wise man

  749. than the hund stripes into the back of a

  750. fool.

  751. A wise man you rebuke him maybe even do

  752. it offensively which is not the proper

  753. way to rebuke somebody. We should always

  754. review or approve in the way that we

  755. would want to be reproved in a way that

  756. is easily sometimes people and it's

  757. speaking but it's true right somebody

  758. can be telling the truth even though

  759. they're saying it arrogant disposition

  760. it still might be true right well a

  761. rebuke an open rebuke enters more into a

  762. wise man stripes in the back of what

  763. does that means are hard to teach

  764. there's a stubborn I will not submit to

  765. and wisdom. I just won't do it.

  766. Children is acknowledged in fathers that

  767. foolishness is bound in the heart of a

  768. child. Little child is like, "No, I

  769. won't do it. But it's good for you. I

  770. don't care."

  771. All right. It says that that the shall

  772. drive it far from him. The rod of ref

  773. because the nature of it has no interest

  774. in wisdom. What is the one for a fool?

  775. We find it here. You have a fool in your

  776. life. Here's the hope for a fool. You

  777. want to know a hope for a fool? Some

  778. fools through their sinful ways and

  779. because of their iniquity suffered

  780. affliction.

  781. When fools suffer the consequences of

  782. their actions, that is the best way, the

  783. best hope for the fool that they will be

  784. delivered by crying out to God. But

  785. sometimes equally foolish parents and

  786. spouses,

  787. moms, dads bail their little fool out of

  788. trouble and they don't feel the pain of

  789. their family.

  790. This fancy term of codependency, you

  791. know, somebody that's an addict of some

  792. sort and their spouse complains about

  793. the addiction, but it kind of makes them

  794. feel good because they get to be the

  795. savior over and over again. And so the

  796. spouse is calling in the other person

  797. saying, "Hey, you know what? My my

  798. husband or wife got the flu and they're

  799. so sick they can't come in today. Let me

  800. out of hung over, right?" And they bail

  801. them out again and again with lies and

  802. with with uh or just paying the

  803. consequences. You know, you got a kid in

  804. jail

  805. might be to let them let them sit out

  806. their time in jail.

  807. Let let them feel the results of their

  808. folly. It's just like the compassionate

  809. thing to do for a brat throwing

  810. themselves on the floor and climbing the

  811. caveman is walking. In the same way, the

  812. fool needs to suffer the consequences of

  813. their actions so that they'll be verse

  814. 19. Then they cry to the Lord in their

  815. trouble. But sometimes people enable the

  816. fool to continue in the folly instead of

  817. letting them suffer the consequence of

  818. their actions. That's a lot of times

  819. when the great turn happens is they find

  820. themselves at a low point and then what?

  821. They cry in the Lord of their trouble

  822. and he deliver them from their distrust.

  823. How they tell them to deliver them?

  824. Verse 20, he sent out his word and

  825. healed them and delivered them from

  826. their destruction.

  827. What did the fool ultimately need all

  828. along? They needed to submit to God's

  829. word. He sent his word and healed them.

  830. When I was in Bible college, this verse

  831. is one of the reasons why I love this

  832. chapter. this verse verse 20 Psalm 107

    Psalms 107:20

  833. verse 20 was written up on the back wall

  834. of our chapel so every Sunday at some

  835. point in the service I would look up and

  836. I would see on the back wall he sent his

  837. word them and delivered them from their

  838. destruction

  839. look at it every week he sent his word

  840. how did he

  841. well I think one this is his commanding

  842. word that calls things forward but but

  843. all we need is God's truth we to hear

  844. the truth. But the fool doesn't want to

  845. hear the truth. And what makes the fool

  846. willing to hear the truth? Their

  847. afflictions humble them to the point

  848. that they're willing to hear the good

  849. news of God's word.

  850. Verse 21, let them thank the Lord for

  851. his steadfast love, for his wonderful

  852. works to deliver men. That's the

  853. repeating phrase. Let fools tell people,

  854. "I was a fool. I cried out to God and he

  855. delivered me." and let them offer

  856. sacrifices of thanksgiving and his needs

  857. in songs of joy. Sacrifices of

  858. thanksgiving. You know, interesting

  859. enough. I was looking up another word

  860. that I've been studying this week and I

  861. just have a hard time remembering it.

  862. It's the word. I know it's not. And I

  863. was like, I gota find it somewhere in

  864. the Bible and look at it in context.

  865. And I looked it up was very interest.

  866. Interesting because the word

  867. can mean pierce. It has pierced and it's

  868. the word for the unleaven bread that

  869. they would give in thanksgiving

  870. offerings like in Leviticus 17. The

  871. thanksgiving bread was always pierced

  872. and it's implied in the Hebrew but it's

  873. not in English. We don't know it in

  874. English.

  875. If you ever look at our communion bread,

  876. look at the full

  877. it

  878. years ago. I like Jews have been taking

  879. leaven bread and piercing it for

  880. thousand years and we don't know why

  881. they did it. Well, I read that word for

  882. all and there it is. The bread that they

  883. used in thanksgiving offerings was

  884. pierced. It was it was

  885. another beautiful picture because Jesus

  886. he was wounded for our transgressions

  887. for our iniquities

  888. of our people and by his stripes we are

  889. healed already.

  890. Jesus was

  891. pierced and his hands and feet and his

  892. pierced him. And so the and the bread

  893. that we use for communion the Jews who

  894. make that you look at the box that he

  895. made in Israel the Jews that do that for

  896. thousands of years and people forgotten

  897. why but when you read the Hebrew the the

  898. bread itself was always to be

  899. it's in the world and so as we break the

  900. communian bread and We we remember that

  901. he was Christ and he was pierced for us.

  902. There's actually more than just it's

  903. actually implied in the way that the

  904. unleven bread was made for thousands of

  905. years. It's a reminder that he was stri

  906. for us. He was here for us. And the word

  907. for for the word Eucharistic Eucharist

  908. means thanksgiving.

  909. So for us believers thanksgiving is

  910. every week we come to the word we see

  911. our father. We hear the gospel. We come

  912. to the communion table and we give God

  913. thanks for his steadfast love and for

  914. his goodness for the children of men.

  915. This is part of our weekly service, the

  916. Eucharist, which means thanksgiving. We

  917. give God thanks. We remember his fierce

  918. body. We remember his body that was

  919. broken for us and we give him thanks.

  920. That this is part of thanksgiving that

  921. that we do weekly in our service and to

  922. be part of our lives giving God thanks.

  923. Okay.

  924. Verse 23. Next testimony.

  925. Testimony number four, the dangers of

  926. nature. Verse 23. Some went down to the

  927. sea and ships doing business on the

  928. great waters. They saw the deeds of the

  929. Lord, his wondrous work from the deep.

  930. For it commanded and raised the storming

  931. wind which lifted up the waves of the

  932. sea. They mounted up the heavens. They

  933. went down to the depth. Their courage

  934. melted away in their evil fight. They

  935. healed, reeled, and staggered like

  936. drunken men and were at their skin. Then

  937. they cried to the Lord in their trouble

  938. and he delivered them from their

  939. distress. He made the storm be still and

  940. the waves of the sea were hush. Then

  941. they were glad that the waters were

  942. quiet and he brought them to their

  943. desired haven. So now here we got a

  944. group of people. They're out at sea in a

  945. terrifying situation. I think it's

  946. passage of the Bible. Jonah Jonah has

  947. been told to go to the people at

  948. Nineveh. And instead of going and doing

  949. what he's doing, he runs in the opposite

  950. direction. He gets on a boat. He gets in

  951. the boat. They're headed for sleep

  952. and on the way he falls asleep in the

  953. holy ship and there's a storm so bad

  954. they come and they wake him up and

  955. wrinkle that sleeper. pray to thy God

  956. that he might have mercy upon us. Here's

  957. the one man who is able. His prayers

  958. actually avail

  959. and the pagans are crying out to God.

  960. And so he comes and he says, "You know

  961. what? It's because of me that I do this.

  962. Throw me in the water and the storm will

  963. be filled."

  964. And what they do is they throw them in

  965. the water after they're all going to

  966. sink anyway. They throw them in the

  967. water and immediately the ship is

  968. calmed. What a beautiful picture that

  969. Jesus was willing to die for us and that

  970. that the wrath of God would subside and

  971. immediately that the the sea was calm

  972. where these people were out in the in

  973. the ocean. They're in a storm and they

  974. cry out to God and then immediately the

  975. storm is calmed. We have a story in the

  976. New Japest

  977. on the Sea of Galilee and the disciples

  978. were crying out. Don't you care that we

  979. perish? And he stands up and he says,

  980. "Peace be still." And immediately

  981. the sea was calmed and also immediately

  982. they appeared at ran. So So Jesus calmed

  983. the evidence of his divinity and his

  984. power but also his love and his care for

  985. his disciples. They cried out to Jesus,

  986. the maker of heaven and earth, and he

  987. heard them. So dangers of major, they

  988. cried out to God, and God delivered them

  989. because the Lord rules over the sea. All

  990. right. Verse 31. Let them thank the Lord

  991. for his steadfast love, for his wondrous

  992. works for the children of man. Let them

  993. extol him in the congregation of the

  994. people and praise him in the assembly of

  995. the elders.

  996. Go tell the church. And when you're done

  997. telling the church, go tell the elders,

  998. the senators of the land. Go tell We

  999. need to talk about it. Christians, we

1000. need to talk about it. When we have our

1001. we have our time where we we make our

1002. prayer request. It's also a time for

1003. thanksgiving. It's a time to talk about

1004. God, what he's done in our life. You

1005. never know when he testifies who will be

1006. encouraged, who will be strengthened, uh

1007. who will be built up in their faith, who

1008. will realize that there's hope for them.

1009. They think, "Wow, God can save that guy.

1010. Surely he can save me." Uh, testify

1011. before church and and make them known.

1012. Verse 33, he turns rivers into a desert,

1013. brings water into thirsty ground, a

1014. fruitful land into a salty waste because

1015. of the evil of it.

1016. All right. So, first he focuses on the

1017. sanctions. He turns rivers west

1018. into desert springs of the water and

1019. water. Why does he turn a rand into a

1020. salty race? Because of the evil of its

1021. inhabitants. This is a reminder to

1022. Israel. Even though you think you're

1023. powerful, even though you think you have

  1024. a mighty military, a strong defense, a

1025. strong navy, great a great network of

1026. spies, even though you think you're

1027. safe. If you are not waiting for the

1028. Lord, you are not safe. If your nation

1029. is covenant breaking, you are not safe.

1030. He can take a river and turn it into a

1031. desert. He can take springs of water and

1032. spring into the thirsty ground. God is

1033. able to proud. He's able to bring the

1034. powerful low whoever they are. This is a

1035. good morning to us in the United States

  1036. and I I remember after 911 it it

1037. bothered me so quickly because the power

1038. applied was put on bumper stickers

1039. everywhere. The power the only power

1040. applied I read in scripture is the power

  1041. to bring you low.

1042. that actually pride is the fall of many

1043. empires. Even in history, the Persians

1044. trusted in their mighty chariots and uh

1045. the Greeks figured out that the ranks

  1046. could

  1047. long spears with chariots.

1048. A little change in technology and their

1049. superior weaponry was no longer

1050. superior. the the the um various battles

1051. in the middle ages of knights against

1052. men with long spears. Um pride pride has

1053. the ability to bring us low as

1054. individuals, as families, as nations.

1055. Pride is a very dangerous attitude now.

1056. Uh the humble we cry out to God in a far

1057. safer way. But he goes the other way as

1058. well. He can turn a desert into a

1059. spring. He turns a desert into pools of

1060. water, a parched land into springs of

1061. water. So when a n been judged and he

1062. comes to the Lord. When a man has been

1063. judged and he comes to the Lord, God is

1064. able to take the desert and turn into a

1065. full water and there he lets the hungry

1066. dwell and they establish the city to

1067. live in. They grow fields and plant

1068. vineyards and get a fruitful yield. By

1069. his blessing they multiply greatly and

1070. he does not let their livestock

1071. diminish. When they are diminished and

1072. brought low through oppression, evil and

1073. sorrow, he pours contempt on princes and

1074. makes them wander in trackless ways. But

1075. he raises up out of affliction and makes

1076. their families like flocks. The upright

1077. see and are glad in all wickedness shuts

1078. it. Now this was written by people

1079. coming back from Babylon. They just

  1080. lived it.

1081. They know that a generation earlier they

1082. were a powerful independent nation and

1083. God brought them into judgment and he

1084. humbled them and now God is restoring

1085. them. And so it is kind of a reminder

1086. that he's faithful to God because God

1087. meets out blessings and curses based

  1088. upon covenant fidelity.

1089. This is taught in Deuteronomy 30. God at

1090. the end of Deuteronomy Moses is

1091. appealing to them. He's telling them to

1092. be covenant keepers. Keep the covenant

1093. that's been delivered to you.

1094. Deuteronomy 3:16 I set before you today

    Deuteronomy 3:16

1095. life and good death and evil.

1096. If you obey the commandments of Yahweh

1097. Elohim that I command you today by

1098. loving the Lord your God by walking in

1099. his ways and by keeping his commandments

1100. and his statutes and his rules, then you

1101. shall live and multiply and the Lord

1102. your God will bless you in the land that

1103. you are entering to take possession of

1104. it. But if your heart turns away and you

1105. will not here but are drawn away to

1106. worship other gods and serve them. I

1107. declare to you today that you shall

1108. surely perish. You shall not live long

1109. in the land that you are going over the

1110. Jordan to enter into Moses. You know

1111. what I told you? I told you life and

1112. death. I told you ought to be blessed

1113. and I told you how you'll be cursed. God

1114. will either bless you or curse you as a

1115. nation based upon covenant idity.

1116. It's like I said before you a tree of

1117. life and the tree of knowledge of good

1118. and evil. Choose life both you and your

  1119. children may live.

  1120. That's the choice.

1121. Fidelity and blessing or infidelity and

1122. cursing. Then verse 19, he says, "I call

1123. heaven and host witness against you

1124. today that I have set before you life

1125. and death, blessing and curse. Therefore

1126. choose life that both you and your

1127. offspring may live. loving the Lord your

1128. God, obeying his voice, and holding fast

1129. to him, for he is your life and length

1130. of days, that you may dwell in the land

1131. that the Lord swore to your fathers, to

1132. Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob to get

1133. them. Now, New Testament, the New

  1134. Testament, we're saved. We're declared

1135. righteous by faith in Jesus Christ.

1136. Talked about that a lot last week. It's

1137. by grace that we are saved through faith

1138. and not not of ourselves. It is a gift

1139. of God, not a works that any man

1140. I will say though that it's still true

1141. for the Christian mind that fidelity

1142. brings God's blessing and infidelity

  1143. brings

1144. whom the Lord loves and chases.

1145. Now it may be that it's God's will for

1146. you to suffer not as a sinner but as a

1147. witness of him. Maybe, but most of the

1148. suffering that comes in our life in some

  1149. way comes from

1150. uh disobedience to I don't like to say

1151. most, but a good deal of it is anyway.

1152. Foolish living, foolish choices, sinful

1153. behavior brings guilt and misery and

  1154. strife.

  1155. foolish financial practical foolish

  1156. eating practical foolish sleeping

1157. foolish. You can go on and on and

1158. principles in scripture that are wise to

1159. live by that brings blessings. And so

1160. these people finding themselves in dire

1161. strait after having uh disobeyed God

1162. when they turn to the Lord they find

1163. that God the steadfast love is

1164. everlasting. He's good steadfast love

1165. endures forever. Verse 43 last verse of

1166. Psalm 107 and I bring one of the New

  1167. Testament Psalm 107 vers43. Whoever is

1168. wise let him attend to these things. Let

1169. them consider the steadfast love of the

1170. Lord. So we conclude with really why is

1171. this psalm written? This psalm is

1172. written to show you the pattern that sin

1173. brings consequences. But when you cry

1174. out to God, God's love hasn't moved. It

  1175. hasn't changed. It's there. He's waiting

1176. for us to cry out to him and repent. And

1177. and he is a faithful God who loves us.

1178. He gave himself for us. And we cry out

1179. to him. He forgives us. He restores to

1180. and and also it's written that we would

1181. attend these things to what things to

1182. giving you glory. This is our delightful

1183. duty. People need to hear when God has

1184. done something in our life. Let the

1185. redeemer of the Lord say so. Talk about

1186. it. Other people need to hear your

1187. story. I want to go the New Testament.

1188. It shows this pattern of people crying

  1189. out to God

1190. and God blessing. Acts 2 verse 37 Peter

    Acts 2:37

1191. preaches the sermon to by the way there

1192. are Jews that are scattered they've been

1193. scattered all over the gap for just like

1194. earlier in the psalm after after they

1195. were scattered these are Jews who have

1196. come up to Jerusalem from all over the

1197. world from where they've been scattered

1198. and they're coming up to Jerusalem on

1199. pilgrimage to offer gifts and they hear

  1200. hear preach a fantastic

1201. first sermon on the day of Pentecost

1202. This is when Peter's found preaching. It

1203. says that when they heard this, they

1204. were cut to the heart. Peter ended the

1205. sermon with you have slain the Messiah.

1206. And when they heard this, they were cut

1207. to the heart and said to Peter and to

1208. the rest of the apostles, "Brothers,

1209. what shall we do?" Peter crying out to

1210. God, "What shall we do?" And Peter said

1211. to them, "Repent, be baptized, every one

1212. of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for

1213. the forgiveness of your sins, and you

1214. will receive the of the Holy Spirit. So

1215. the promise is for you and for your

1216. children and for all who are far off,

1217. everyone in whom the Lord our God calls

1218. to himself. With many other words he

1219. bore witness and continue to exort them,

1220. saying, "Save yourselves from this

1221. crooked generation. So those who

1222. received his word were baptized and they

1223. were added that day about 3,000 souls.

1224. They cried out to God and God saved

1225. them. So now they're redeemed."

  1226. 42

1227. and they devoted themselves to the

  1228. apostles teaching and fellowship

1229. breaking of bread and the prayer. By the

1230. way, that is that's why we do service

1231. the way we do. Uh they devote themselves

1232. to the apostles teaching we we teach

1233. God's word. So that whatever what only

1234. God's truth is being preached the point

1235. of the passage would be the point of the

1236. sermon, right? themselves the we do that

1237. weekly fellowship. I don't have time to

1238. go into this word point in the air but I

1239. believe it points to the Lord's supper.

1240. That's what I believe it refers to is

1241. the Lord's supper. Breaking of bread.

1242. That's why we have a fellowship meal

1243. every Sunday. The early church had

1244. agreed meals and they ate together on

1245. the first day of the week and prayers.

1246. That's why we we pray an opening prayer.

1247. We pray the prayer request. We pray at

1248. the opening of the sermon. We at the end

1249. we pray over the communion the prayers

1250. and and I and I believe that this is

1251. God's design to build a mature body of

1252. believers not what man says but what God

1253. says will transform our lives we hear

1254. God's word at the end of every sermon we

1255. come to the communion table we remember

1256. what Christ has done for us we remember

1257. how he exp we cry out to God save us and

1258. We have a fellowship meal. We break

1259. bread together. This is every week. And

1260. and and it's it's even even the

1261. relationships that are built are

1262. sanctifying influence on the body of

1263. Christ. It says in verse 46

  1264. uh

1265. or verse 43, and a came upon every soul,

1266. and many wonders and signs were being

1267. done through the apostles. I do want to

1268. say a little note there too. A King

1269. James said fear. Um, it's very

  1270. important. Remember that we're we're

1271. here to reverence God. The service is

1272. actually service for God. I want to tell

1273. you this is this is not a time to be on

1274. our phones looking at Facebook and other

  1275. things. That's offensive. I think that's

1276. offensive. Honestly, don't you feel

1277. offended if you have a friend over and

  1278. who's not I think families I think we

1279. follow. We all fall into this. I know I

1280. found this. We're sitting in the same

1281. room and the phone. It's a way of saying

1282. you're not very important to me. You're

1283. not as important to me right now as

  1284. whatever's on my phone,

1285. right? To be honest, kind of offensive.

1286. I think it's offensive God. God told

1287. Moses, "Poke your shoes off. You're on

1288. holy ground." Why? I mean, God created

1289. all the dust on earth. Why didn't you

1290. take your shoes off somewhere? Because

1291. from Moses's vantage point, when you

1292. come into a holy place, you take your

1293. shoes off as you don't bring your

  1294. sandals in the temple.

1295. So what God is saying is if you would do

1296. that in a pagan temple when you come

1297. before me take your shoes off because

1298. you understand it as an act of

1299. reverence. We don't take our shoes off

  1300. in this church.

1301. Uh but we it's not it's not our culture

1302. so much to necessarily take the sho

1303. shoes off but it was for them. And so

1304. because it meant that to them, it's like

1305. if you would do that for an earthly king

1306. or or if you would do that for a pagan

1307. temple, when you come into my presence,

  1308. you're going to take

1309. I think it is when we when we certain

1310. things that we do, what what are we

1311. telling the Lord by what's important? I

1312. think I think if we're all involved, if

1313. we can't put down our Facebook when

1314. we're here to worship God or whatever it

1315. is that we're looking at, um I think

1316. it's a lack of reverence and God God

1317. created fear came upon every soul. What

1318. does that mean? God became immensely

  1319. important to them.

1320. Reverence came upon the congregation.

1321. And what happened? Many wonders and

  1322. signs were done. Oh, that's that's

1323. opportunity for a lot of testimony.

1324. God was healing people. God was changing

1325. people. God was saving people. God works

1326. wonders in a congregation that reverses

  1327. him.

  1328. to give them respect.

1329. You know, here's the church. Time to get

1330. the conversations out in the lobby.

1331. You know, security team, I hope you're

  1332. listening to the sermon.

  1333. Whoever's out there,

1334. we don't want to offend God.

1335. So, we focus on God. We reverence God,

1336. not the Lord. That we don't want to

1337. offend him. And if we treat magistrate

1338. with more reverence than we treat the

1339. king of kings, it's offensive. But in in

1340. this attitude of holy awe and reverence,

1341. what was happening? Verse 46. And day by

1342. day, ascending the temple together,

1343. breaking bread in their homes, the

1344. hospitalities, it's not one day a week.

  1345. They're breaking bread. That's why I

1346. think it refers to the fellowship

1347. earlier. They're breaking bread from

1348. house to house. They receive their food

1349. with glad and generous hearts. not

1350. entitled people. These are grateful

1351. people. They're not hyper critical

1352. people. They're grateful people. They

1353. have glad and generous hearts. That's

1354. the other thing. We can check ourselves.

1355. If instead of thanksgiving, we're

1356. constantly critical. We're critical of

1357. everything. That is an indicator of a

1358. heart problem. If all we

  1359. criticism, check your heart.

1360. Check your heart. We just pled through

1361. your family. If it's just nothing but

1362. critical, we need to check our heart.

1363. And Verse 47, Praising God,

1364. testifying about his goodness, praising

1365. God and having favor with all those

1366. people. And the Lord added to their

1367. number day by day those who were being

1368. saved daily before church. Why? God's

1369. people filled with gladness, filled with

1370. joy, filled with thanksgiving, having

  1371. experienced God's presence, having

  1372. experienced God's redemption, having

1373. experienced God's loving kindness and

1374. goodness. They couldn't help but talk

  1375. about him

1376. doing one day a week. Hey, I'm going to

1377. take care of your great

  1378. entertainment.

1379. No, they were going to themselves.

1380. your neighbor doesn't think you got to

1381. come over. I got to I got to tell you

1382. it's not just I got to tell you about

1383. what's going on in my church. I got to

1384. tell you what's going on. That that's

1385. how the church was it was exploding. It

1386. occurred to me recently that the early

1387. church the first church the day it was

1388. born was a mega church by our

  1389. definition.

1390. The first day 3,000 people get saved and

1391. then after that every day people were

1392. getting saved. And a couple chapters

1393. later, 5,000 people get saved. And then

1394. we had 12 apostles in

1395. 12 men had to figure out a way to

1396. disciple thousands of people. I tell

  1397. you, I don't that that

1398. that's part of mission. What are you how

1399. you thousands of people? You got to

1400. delegate and you got to get babies grow

1401. up to maturity as you can each other.

  1402. That's God's plan is the whole

1403. congregation with pleasing God with

1404. generous heart and and they ordered that

1405. in church daily and then they as they

1406. got taught they taught each other. It's

  1407. a beautiful thing. God's church growth

1408. plan. I pray it for us. I pray that God

1409. would make us as a church more reverent,

1410. more thankful, more grateful, less

1411. critical, and more willing to speak of

  1412. his trust, loving tong.

1413. Lord God, we thank you that you have

1414. redeemed us from all evil. We thank you,

1415. God, that your mercies renew every

1416. morning. We thank you, Father, that when

  1417. we cry to you,

1418. when we ask you to forgive us of our s

1419. on the basis of what Christ has done for

1420. us. Your word says that if we confess

1421. our sins, he is faithful and just to

1422. forgive us of our sins

1423. from all unrighteous. Lord, we thank you

1424. for this gracious mercy is to all those

1425. who call upon the name of the Lord. But

1426. whoever call upon the name of the Lord

  1427. shall be saved.

1428. Father, for leading us to the cross, we

1429. find the pierce who gave himself as a

  1430. substitute.

1431. Father, fill us with reverence. Fill us

1432. with a holy desire to make you known.

1433. And father, I pray for anyone here this

1434. morning that is yet to cry out to you.

1435. Lord, we pray for them. We pray that

1436. Lord, you would move upon their hearts,

1437. that you would remove the doubt, that

1438. you would remove their whatever whatever

1439. idol would hold them back. and serving

1440. you. God, we pray that you would cleanse

1441. them from their idols, take their heart

  1442. and take their heart.
