Starting
-
the book of Matthew this morning right
-
off chapter one after 105 or so sermons
-
in Genesis. Uh those sermons will come
-
in handy as we come into the book of
-
Matthew. Matthew alludes to Genesis a
-
lot. Genesis. In Genesis, we see
-
promises made to Adam and to Abraham and
-
later on promises will be made to David.
-
In the book of Matthew,
-
we'll see those promises kept. It's a
-
long wait for Messiah, a long way before
-
Christ has come. Book of Matthew
-
uniquely goes after a Hebrew, first
-
century Hebrew audience. Mark is geared
-
very much towards the Romans. Okay, it's
-
a language, a quote scripture, post the
-
Old Testament, but not like Matthew.
-
Matthew is geared towards the Hebrew
-
mind, the Hebrew leader of the first
-
century who reads the Greek Old
-
Testament. That is who Matthew is
-
talking to. Luke has in mind a very
-
Greek audience and a lot of the same
-
things as Matthew, but Matthew is
-
uniquely Jewish and written to an
-
audience that read again and again and
-
again the Old Testament. And so as we
-
read every chapter in Matthew, there's
-
going to be quotations of the prophets
-
going to be illusions to the law, the
-
Torah. And we're going to look at that
-
this morning. We look at the major
-
from the
-
sign.
-
The Jew of the first century has
-
questions about does Jesus meet the
-
criteria of being the Messiah we've been
-
waiting for. We're going to see he comes
-
at the proper time. He comes from the
-
proper family. He he uh he does things
-
that only Messiah could do. And he is
-
the long awaited
-
second Adam, the seed of Abraham and the
-
son of David the king. So my title this
-
morning is introduction to Matthew
-
text. The point of this morning sermon
-
is the promises made to Adam, Abraham
-
and David are fulfilled in Christ. If
-
you stand with me now for the reading of
-
God's word, we'll start reading in
-
Matthew 1
-
verse one. The book of the genealogy of
-
Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son
-
of Abraham. Skipping down to the final
-
verses of the book of Matthew 28.
-
And Jesus came and said to them, "All
-
authority in heaven and on earth has
-
been given to me. Go therefore and make
-
disciples of all nations, baptizing them
-
in the name of the Father and of the Son
-
and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
-
observe all that I have commanded you.
-
And behold, I am with you always to the
-
end of the age."
-
Lord God, we thank you that you are a
-
promise keeping
-
God that you made promises to the
-
fathers and the prophets that you have
-
kept the person of your son Jesus Christ
-
with the king that's coming Lord even as
-
we are getting ready to enter into this
-
Christmas season and we think about your
-
incarnation your life on our behalf your
-
death on our behalf and your exaltation
-
God I pray that this Christmas with you
-
especially focused on you our Lord and
-
Savior that the king has come the
-
kingdom has come and you are our Lord
-
and Savior forever. We pray your Jesus
-
name. Amen. You may be seated. You may
-
be seated. So I started with the first
-
verse of the Bible of the book of
-
Matthew
-
and I ended with the final verses of
-
Matthew. We're really gonna see that the
-
scene that begins in verse one and the
-
final verses of Matthew, it shows Jesus
-
as the last Adam to whom heaven and
-
earth has been given. Adam was given to
-
man. Now Christ has been given to him as
-
the seed of Abraham. The promise made
-
Abraham that Jesus is the fulfillment of
-
that promise. Here is the seed of
-
Abraham in whom all the nations of the
-
earth will be blessed. And so here we we
-
have Jesus saying go and teach all
-
nations. And we see also the promise
-
made to David that from him would come
-
an everlasting king. And Jesus is that
-
everlasting king. And he says I am with
-
you always to the end of the age. Let's
-
look here. I'm speak this morning and
-
and look at verse one. Matthew 1. That's
-
as far as we're going to get in Matthew
-
1 this morning. But we're going to look
-
at a lot a lot of parts of the Bible
-
that are reflected in this verse. The
-
book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,
-
the son of David, the son of Abraham.
-
Verse one calls out directly
-
to whom promises were made that Jesus is
-
the fulfillment of this concept of Jesus
-
being the Messiah. Jesus is the Messiah.
-
Jesus Christ. Christ is a Greek word for
-
means anointed one. Someone who smeared
-
with oil. The Hebrew word Mashiach. It
-
also means anointed one. We get our word
-
Messiah from the word Messiah. And we
-
get our word Christ from the word. But
-
they all mean the same thing, the
-
anointed one. Christ is not his last
-
name. Or maybe you could look him up in
-
a first century telephone book. Christ
-
is a title. It's a title. In the Old
-
Testament, the the prophets were
-
anointed with oil, the priests were
-
anointed with oil, and the kings were
-
anointed with oil. And a symbolic
-
ceremony where he became the anointed
-
one, a spot. But Jesus says, Jesus,
-
the Christ, he is the anointed one that
-
all former anointed ones pointed to. And
-
so the first thing we do is asking the
-
question, does Jesus meet the criteria
-
of being the anointed one? And so we'll
-
start off the book of Matthew. I'll get
-
into it next week. A genealogy that
-
demonstrates he comes from the exact
-
family that that God promised the
-
Messiah would come from. But as the
-
anointed one, uh he is our prophet, our
-
priest, and our king. And we will see in
-
the book of Matthew, Jesus, a prophet.
-
Matthew 567 showing the people their
-
sins calling them to repentance. We'll
-
see him as God's priest by bearing our
-
sins on the cross in our place. And we
-
will see him as our king exalted with
-
all authority in heaven and in earth. My
-
hope is that that just as encouraged the
-
first century Jew that as a 21st century
-
Christian you will be invigorated with
-
the concept that Jesus indeed is king.
-
He is all sorts of authority. He is
-
God's sovereign and not just sovereign
-
over us in a personal way. He has all
-
authority in heaven and in earth. He is
-
the king of kings and the lord of lords.
-
He is the one by whom princes rightly
-
reign by which they will be judged if
-
they violate him. We are not
-
secularists. We are Christians and we
-
acknowledge the authority of Jesus
-
Christ. He is Lord. Is he our personal
-
savior? Yes, indeed. Personal. He died
-
for you. If you trust in him, he will
-
save you. But he's more than our
-
personal savior. He is the one from whom
-
all authority in heaven and earth is
-
derived. This is what clearly put forth
-
in the book of Matthew. We will see the
-
word
-
55 times the word kingdom will appear.
-
It is a it is a theme of Matthew. Jesus
-
is the king who's on the throne of
-
David. Jesus is the promised king
-
Adam.
-
We see here
-
the book of the genealogy of Jesus
-
Christ the son of David the son of
-
Abraham. Now that word
-
is the word.
-
It's the word.
-
The book of the genealogology
-
is the book of the genesis of Jesus the
-
Messiah the son of David the son of
-
Abraham. The word means source and
-
origin. So when you're talking about
-
your genealogy you're talking about
-
where you came from your origin. This is
-
the Greek word hol I think 13 times at
-
least in the book of Genesis. The book
-
of Genesis as we read after 525
-
in the book of Genesis. We read many
-
genealogies.
-
We read the genealogy of Adam and the
-
genealogy of Noah and the genealogy of
-
Abraham. We have many genealogies. And
-
the genealogies show record of the
-
people for whom the promises were made.
-
God made certain promises to Adam of
-
which we are all descendants and we are
-
the heirs of those. God made certain
-
promises to Abraham that all the nations
-
would be blessed and we are in another
-
sense the heirs of that and Jesus made
-
promises to David. Genealogies are
-
important because it's God saying I made
-
a promise and I want you to keep record
-
so that when the promise is fulfilled
-
you know I fulfilled that promise and we
-
talk about that a lot in the book of
-
Genesis. The book of Genesis is a book
-
of origin the origin of the Adam and the
-
earth but also the the of the families
-
of the earth and the origins of the
-
priesthood and the origins of of of
-
substitutionary atonement dying in the
-
place of the sinner. And so here in the
-
first verse, Matthew chooses to use the
-
word Genesis which is the name of the
-
book in the Greek. The Hebrew reader
-
when he reads the book of the Genesis of
-
Jesus Christ his mind comes back to
-
promises.
-
So while the verse mention specifically
-
Abraham and David
-
of all the places this word Genesis is
-
used in the Greek translation is only
-
called the book of the Genesis one time.
-
The book of the Genesis is in Genesis 5
-
1-3 here. Look at what it says. It says
-
in Genesis 5 going back to Genesis. This
-
is the book
-
of the generations of Adam. This is the
-
book of the Genesis of Adam. It's the
-
same.
-
But here Adam
-
created man. He made them in the
-
likeness of God. Male and female he
-
created them. And he blessed them and
-
made them man. when they were created
-
when Adam lived 130 years from father to
-
son in his own likeness out of his image
-
and made himself.
-
So the one time it's used uh in the Old
-
Testament this phrase the book of
-
Genesis is in reference to Adam. It
-
refers to the genesis of Noah and the
-
genesis of Abraham. And here's the of
-
the generations of Adam. And I believe
-
the reason that uh Matthew is doing this
-
is he wants us to think about Adam.
-
I'm going to show you promises were made
-
to Adam and Jesus called the last
-
Adam.
-
All of us are descended from
-
Adam we all partake of his sin nature.
-
But we can either be legally in Adam as
-
sinners or we can be legally drafted
-
into Christ and be in the last Adam and
-
which we are partaker not of his sin but
-
of his righteousness. So Matthew wants a
-
first century thinking about Genesis and
-
the promises that were made. I'm going
-
to show you some parallels between
-
Jesus and what Adam had and what Jesus
-
says of it's I find it very fascinating
-
and in Genesis 126 28 we see Adam's
-
dominion. Then God said, "Let us make
-
man in our image after our likeness, and
-
let them humanity have dominion over the
-
fish of the sea, and over the birds of
-
the heaven, and over the livestock, and
-
over all the earth, and over every
-
creeping thing that creeps on the
-
earth." So God created man in his own
-
image, in the image of God, he created
-
him, male and female, he created them.
-
And God blessed them. God said to them,
-
"Be fruitful and multiply and fill the
-
earth and subdue it and have dominion
-
over the fish of the sea and over the
-
birds of the heavens and over every
-
living thing that lives on the earth."
-
Okay. So, Adam had
-
it.
-
It makes him a king. He had a kingdom.
-
He had dominion over the earth. But what
-
happens to Adam is Adam will fall and
-
his kingdom. But what do we see in
-
Christ? Christ has given his kingdom
-
back. So the verse I've already
-
said, all authority in heaven and on
-
earth has been given to me. All
-
authority
-
has
-
dominion at the end of
-
they reflect each other. And it's a
-
major theme of the book of Matthew is
-
Christ has dominion. He is the last
-
Adam. He is our king. He is our
-
authority. All authority comes from him.
-
Authority in the home. Authority in the
-
civil government. Authority in the
-
church. Our own authority as human
-
beings derive from Christ authority.
-
It's all authority in heaven and on
-
earth. No, he doesn't just say all
-
authority on earth or all authority in
-
heaven. is all authority in heaven and
-
on earth. When we say Christ is king, we
-
mean he is king. All right. But Adam
-
also reflected Christ. Adam is tested
-
for sin.
-
In Genesis 3:16, the Lord God took him
-
and put him in the garden of Eden to
-
work it. The Lord God commanded the man
-
saying, "You must surely eat of every
-
tree of the garden, but of the tree of
-
the knowledge of good and evil. You
-
shall not eat for in that day that you
-
eat of it you shall surely die. So God
-
gives a practical test. Adam is created
-
sinless and his wife is sinless. And in
-
order to show his love a
-
tree in the midst of the garden of all
-
the tree you may freely eat but the tree
-
of the knowledge of good and evil you
-
shall not eat of it. The tree of it you
-
shall surely not.
-
This is a practical way for Adam and Eve
-
to show their love to God by continuing
-
in obedience and fellowship with him.
-
They had two trees set before them.
-
There's the tree of life from which they
-
could eat and they could enjoy it and
-
live forever. And they have the tree and
-
the knowledge of good and evil or the
-
tree of death if you will. And so this
-
test was given to Adam. Adam was tested
-
in a gardener.
-
Matthew 41 was led up by the spirit into
-
the wilderness to be tempted by the
-
devil. And Adam is
-
wild.
-
Adam is driven from the garden by angels
-
and at the end of the temptation angels
-
come and minister to Jesus. This is a
-
contract
-
fail.
-
So we see Jesus as the second Adam. We
-
see Adam fall in Genesis 36
-
at the tree of an evil. But the serpent
-
said to the woman, "You will not surely
-
die. For God knows that when you eat of
-
it, your eyes will be opened and you
-
will be like God, knowing good and evil.
-
So when the woman saw that the tree was
-
good for food, and it was a delight, and
-
that the tree was desire, he desired to
-
make one wise, she took of it and ate.
-
And she also gave some to her husband
-
was with her and he ate. So Adam,
-
they
-
just
-
think you can
-
be as
-
selfexating
-
himself to pass through the womb of a
-
woman. What a contrast. Adam
-
selfexation.
-
Jesus being God humiliation
-
to do what? To die on a tree. Adam is
-
temped at a tree and failed. Jesus
-
tested on a tree.
-
We will see Jesus
-
on a tree. The question why
-
why not a sacrificial altar like the
-
oldest
-
I think the symbolism is very strong
-
that God chose as a means of sacrifice
-
for God's son. Adam was at a tree. Jesus
-
was tested on a tree. Adam failed.
-
Christ prevailed. He is the greater
-
Adam. He is the son of God who
-
prevailed.
-
Genesis 3:4-6
-
and the serpent
-
the Lord God saidp
-
here
-
people laugh. This isn't merely a
-
talking.
-
This is an intelligent supernatural
-
being who is temping Adam and Eve to
-
usurp God's authority and to become God
-
for themselves to be a self
-
above all livestock and above all beasts
-
of the field on your belly you shall go
-
and dust you shall eat all the days of
-
your life. I will put enmity between you
-
and the woman and between your offspring
-
your seed and her offspring. He shall
-
bruise your head and you shall lose his.
-
Now notice here it says there will be
-
there will be war between the seed of
-
the serpent and the seed of the woman.
-
The seed of the woman. Biologically who
-
has the seed, the man or the woman?
-
The man. But in this verse, it promises
-
that the seed of the woman will crush
-
the serpent's head. What will we see
-
later in Genesis chapter one and later
-
this month? The virgin birth, the seed
-
of the woman, the man, finally a child
-
will be born to a woman who will crush
-
the serpent's head. You see this in
-
Matthew 27:32
-
later in the book as they went out they
-
found the mannequel
-
this man to carry his cross made of
-
what?
-
And when they came to a place called
-
the woman
-
where Jesus will die
-
of the woman born of a virgin one is now
-
going to crush the head at a place
-
called the place of the
-
And they offered him wine to drink mixed
-
with gold was bitter but was a pain
-
reliever. But when he prayed for he
-
would not drink it. See Adam and Eve
-
perceiving that the fruit of the tree
-
was sweet. They took it down. But Jesus
-
being offered a reliever
-
rejected it. He rejected all of the
-
natural relief that could be given
-
because he was there to get silver mind
-
and a place of judgment to bear our sins
-
and it would not refuse to drink strong
-
drink in the place of judgment. Verse 35
-
and when they had crucified him they
-
divided his garments among them by
-
casting lots. That means he was naked.
-
But how did God find him? Naked in the
-
garden.
-
Then they sat down and kept watch over
-
him there and over his head they put the
-
charge against him which read this is
-
Jesus the king of the Jews. Then two
-
robbers were crucified with him one on
-
the right and one on the left. So in
-
Genesis we see Adam beginning
-
and we see and then in Matthew we see
-
Jesus born of a virgin woman. We
-
prevailing in tempting
-
out a tree. We see Jesus on a tree. We
-
see Jesus the seed of a woman crushing
-
the serpent. This is all intentional.
-
But this is not merely the orchestrating
-
of of man. This is the work of God. God
-
orchestrated all of history to point
-
the whole Old Testament. the Jew who
-
read the the Torah at least three years
-
went through the entire Torah through
-
the synagogue year after year after
-
year. He's making these connections as
-
we go through the book of Matthew to the
-
best of my ability. I'm going to try to
-
find those connections which I've
-
already
-
talked
-
and what I hope will happen is it will
-
invigorate your fa your faith. book is
-
not the man's mind. This book is divine
-
because it's the very growth of God
-
telling us God's story. This is the
-
meaning of history, the meaning of life.
-
It all points to Christ who is the last
-
Adam who is the seed of the woman who
-
trustes the serpent. And we will see
-
this in chapter one through the virgin
-
birth. The king has come and born of a
-
virgin. Now moving on in Genesis the
-
of Jesus Christ. We also read that he's
-
the son of David, the son of Abraham.
-
Certain promises are again made to
-
Abraham that will be alluded to very
-
heavily in the book of Matthew Genesis
-
12 1-3. This is what Abraham gets
-
introduced into the story of Genesis.
-
Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from
-
your country and your kindred and your
-
father's house to the land where I show
-
you. And I will make you a great nation.
-
And I will bless you and I will make
-
your name great so that you will be a
-
blessing. I will bless those who bless
-
you. And him who honors you, I him who
-
dishonors you, I will. And in you all
-
the families of the earth shall be
-
blessed." Paul refer to this as the
-
inbations
-
of the earth will be blessed. The
-
blessing will not just be for his
-
biological
-
but in Christ all the nations of the
-
earth are blessed. He reiterates this
-
again.
-
Now is veryap
-
and I want you to take him on a thour
-
and when you get there I want you to
-
offer up your on a particular mountain
-
that I will show you. It's got to be a
-
specific one. I will show you when you
-
get there. He goes to the area
-
Jerusalem.
-
That's where Jerusalem
-
offer.
-
But I believe on the very spot where God
-
Abraham
-
only son that he loved God only
-
know what's in your heart. I know I I
-
know it's in your heart and because
-
you've done this makes some great
-
promises. Um and and he he promises the
-
uh he authored in the place of his son
-
Isaac, the promised son. And and he says
-
this in verse 16, he said, "By myself I
-
have sworn before Lord because you have
-
done this and have not withheld your
-
son, your only son. I will surely bless
-
you and I will surely multiply your
-
offspring as the stars of heaven and the
-
stand on the seashore. and your
-
offspring shall develop to David his
-
enemy. And in your offspring shall all
-
nations of the earth be blessed because
-
he obey my voice. And what's interesting
-
in Hebrew is the word offering here
-
isn't plural.
-
And we might just say, well, okay, yeah,
-
it's one, but I know in Genesis, but
-
the promise
-
Paul says, "Now the promise were made to
-
Abraham and to his offspring." It does
-
not say and offer referring to referring
-
to one and your offspring who is
-
according to Paul
-
Abraham is that one particular offspring
-
beloved son all the nations of the earth
-
will be left.
-
And so what do we read? Going back to
-
our final verse that I repeated
-
repeatedly
-
verse 18
-
all authority in heaven and earth has
-
been given therefore and make disciples
-
of all nations baptizing them in the
-
name of the father and of the son and of
-
the holy spirit teaching them to observe
-
all that I commanded you and behold I am
-
with you always to the end of the age
-
the final verses of the book of Matthew
-
are about taking this message of Christ
-
the last Adam the seed Abraham, the one
-
who sits on the throne of David in front
-
of all nations and in him all the
-
nations are going to be blessed because
-
people from all nations are going to be
-
are going to believe and be saved. This
-
is a major theme of the book of Matthew
-
is that Jesus is the seed of Abraham. He
-
is the fulfillment of that promise and
-
his whole nation will be formed. And
-
just like his first words to Abraham was
-
Abraham go from your country
-
here in Matthew 28 or his command is go
-
therefore
-
as you go
-
and this
-
glorious message of the death
-
resurrection of Jesus to all nations
-
that all nations will be blessed in
-
So here in Matthew,
-
the genesis of Jesus Christ, the son of
-
David, the son of Abraham
-
referred to his promise that all nations
-
would be blessed in him. All right, now
-
we got David to cover.
-
David,
-
love the story of David. David starts
-
off with a shepherd boy and he's tending
-
his father's sheep and God says I want
-
my own heart
-
David becomes king David makes some
-
major mistakes and
-
crimes and God is very gracious to him
-
and forgiving him and so at one point
-
David says I want to build a house
-
temple for the Lord I want to build a
-
temple and That's a great idea. Go do
-
that. Go do everything in your heart to
-
do it. God directs
-
me
-
to go and talk. He doesn't
-
your son will, but you won't. And he
-
makes certain promises to actually go
-
God's very pleased with David's heart.
-
David wants to build temple. David wants
-
to see God's arwelling and beautiful
-
temple. And so he makes certain
-
when your beliefs are fulfilled and you
-
lie down with your fathers, I will raise
-
up for up your
-
shall come from your body and I will
-
establish his kingdom. He shall build a
-
house for my enemy and I will establish
-
the throne of his kingdom forever. I
-
will be a father and he shall be a son.
-
When he commit iniquity, I will
-
discipline him with the men with the
-
stripes of the sons of men. steadfast
-
love will not depart from them as I take
-
it from Saul my foot away from before
-
you and your house and your kingdom
-
shall be made sure forever before me
-
your throne shall be established forever
-
now there's certain ways in which his
-
son
-
of
-
Solomon did fall into and did him and
-
did thank him kind of the modern
-
vernacular
-
of treatment
-
but Jesus
-
and Solomon's descendants did end up
-
leaving the kingdom. So he's not the
-
everlasting king. So the Jews read this
-
and they're saying well the son of David
-
everlasting has an everlasting kingdom
-
that will be made forever that will be
-
established forever.
-
that they are waiting at the time.
-
The Jews are waiting for the son of
-
David who will have a kingdom
-
established forever. This promise was
-
later clarified through the prophets
-
through Daniel and Isaiah and others
-
that God would take of the family of
-
David and make an everlasting kingdom
-
to come at the time.
-
We're going to look at a very precise
-
timeline at that time.
-
The wise men will come and they're
-
coming because they have a timeline and
-
a star that directs them.
-
But they knew it's time for Messiah to
-
show up.
-
It's time for him to show up. Where is
-
he? Where is he everlasting?
-
Well, the word king, as I told you, the
-
word uh kingdom is used
-
in the book of Matthew, more than any
-
other book. It's a little bit less than
-
Luke
-
is a shorter book, but the theme of the
-
gospel of Matthew.
-
Here's just a few of them. Matthew 32
-
the preaching of John the Baptist with
-
John the Baptist.
-
The kingdom of heaven is at
-
the kingdom at the time. The kingdom of
-
heaven is at hand. In Matthew 4:17,
-
Jesus takes up the same message. From
-
that time,
-
the kingdom of heaven is at
-
hand. It's nearby. It's not thousands of
-
years away. It's at hand.
-
Matthew 4:23
-
the uh we see Jesus and he went
-
throughout all Geing in their synagogue
-
and proclaiming the gospel of the
-
kingdom and healing every sickness and
-
every affliction affliction among the
-
people Jesus preaching the gospel of the
-
kingdom the good news of the kingdom
-
53
-
blessed are the poor there is the
-
kingdom of heaven
-
Matthew 12:28
-
by the spirit of God that I demonstr
-
to whom David was made the promise that
-
his son will sit on his kingdom forever
-
and Jesus saying all authority is given
-
to me in heaven and in earth saying I
-
gin
-
he lost it
-
but he forfeited it
-
now has come at the right hand of the
-
father and all authority in heaven and
-
earth has been given to him and So as we
-
read the book of Matthew, we'll get to
-
chapter 13. We'll hear the parables of
-
his kingdom. He's teaching us what the
-
kingdom is like. Now this is one of the
-
things like talking about what's the
-
nature of that kingdom. Jesus makes it
-
very clear. It's not like the kingdom of
-
this world. It's a different kind of
-
kingdom.
-
This kingdom is an inside out kingdom.
-
The kingdom is within you. The kingdom
-
starts from the inside of its way
-
outward. Other kingdoms have to impose
-
from
-
fear and promise of reward and bribery
-
rule. But Christ changes us from the
-
inside.
-
What's very clear in the book of Matthew
-
I think
-
is that the time of the kingdom has come
-
in the first century and Jesus said it
-
comes out and delivered people.
-
So over the next couple years as we go
-
through I don't know if it'll take years
-
or notice
-
maybe more
-
week after week after week about the
-
kingdom of God
-
and everyone comes under the authority
-
of Christ. He's either your Lord and
-
Judge or he's your Lord and Savior.
-
and think about it. He is your lord.
-
He rules at the right hand of the father
-
and nations are judged by the words of
-
his
-
instit.
-
I believe that there's something
-
physical present in the bread and
-
present in the wine. I don't believe in
-
that. But physical is not the most real
-
thing. In fact, before there was a
-
physical universe, there was eternal
-
God, father, son, and holy spirit. When
-
we think of Christy
-
in a powerful way, he is walking amongst
-
the candlestick. He's walking in his
-
church. He's evaluating them. knows our
-
hearts. And people say that, "Oh, well,
-
yeah, I'm doing some bad things, but God
-
knows my heart."
-
It's actually terrifying.
-
If you're walking contrary to his will,
-
if you come to him as a child and you
-
say, "Lord, I'm struggling. God, I need
-
your help. Father, I need you as my
-
deliverer." If you come to them in
-
humility with the knee bowed, there's a
-
lot of comfort in that. But if you come
-
to the rebel, there's no comfort in the
-
fact that he knows our heart. When we
-
come to table, God's people, we do this.
-
We heal
-
at Matthew 28:18, the final verses of
-
the book of Matthew. Let's look at it
-
one more time. And Jesus came and said,
-
"All authority
-
in heaven and on earth has been given to
-
me."
-
Go therefore
-
given all authority and you're my
-
disciples. What do I want you to do? I
-
want you to go. Go therefore and make
-
disciples of all nations.
-
Today the modern concept
-
laws and geography. The first century
-
when they heard the word
-
of the earth to go and teach all the
-
families of the earthaches
-
and after they believe on the Lord Jesus
-
Christ, what do we do? We baptize them.
-
If baptizing them in the name of the
-
father and of the son and of the holy
-
Baptism.
-
We require baptism.
-
Baptism is much like a marriage ceremony
-
where you say your vows. Baptism is the
-
vows.
-
Baptism
-
to you. I'm trusting in you. I identify
-
with your death and resurrection on my
-
behalf. And I'm yours.
-
by union with Christ. Uh what he has
-
becomes ours and what we have becomes
-
his heon
-
and we take his rightous upon us by
-
union with Christ a great
-
he says I'll take your sins
-
and and we take his righteousness this
-
is what we teach all nations we preach
-
the gospel the newsary
-
atonement, how he died on a tree.
-
And then what teaching them to observe
-
all that I have in the name of what
-
we
-
are command of Matthew? There are
-
promises to be believed. There are
-
warnings to be heeded. There are
-
commandments to be obeyed. as his
-
people, we are commanded to obey him.
-
So week after week, yes, we're going to
-
preach the gospel and the good news of
-
some preachers say, "Oh, that's
-
moralistic preaching." That's not
-
moralism. What moralism is if you're
-
telling people you can be saved by good
-
works
-
but Jesus taught the disciples
-
we're going to spend some time in
-
Matthew 56
-
amount of time
-
when I was a young man first year in
-
Bible college I went to Bible college
-
and I come out I'd gone to a public
-
school where I' been I thought I was a
-
very alone
-
And I started reading I'm like Lord I
-
just I
-
want to be I want to do
-
and so for quite a while I don't even
-
know how long it was quite a while every
-
morning I
-
serve
-
memorize this thing. I read it so much.
-
Matthew seemed easy. I think in three
-
days I memorized
-
I read it so many times it's like my
-
ears up and then within a week or so I I
-
memorized Matthew 5.
-
A great challenge for you. It takes some
-
time to do it
-
not not in an effort to try to merit or
-
earn God's favor.
-
God's people. He's our king. We should
-
submit to him.
-
We need to be the kind of people we
-
should say to all things.
-
Jesus teaches us what to value, how to
-
live, how to feed our enemies, what type
-
of what type of he
-
doesn't go. It's very practical.
-
I found it very convincing.
-
really humbled me greatly
-
just reading the repeatedly
-
therefore perfectrifice.
-
init.
-
I'm not as honest as I thought I was.
-
I'm not as free as I thought I was. I'm
-
not I'm not as generous as he called me
-
to be. I don't love my enemies like I'm
-
supposed to. Nor do I love my neighbor
-
as I'm supposed to. Nor do I love God as
-
I'm supposed to.
-
It should leave you humble when you're
-
done.
-
And when you're humbled by it, you
-
should say
-
I want to be more.
-
That's what it should be. We're a lot of
-
people in the book of Matthew. We're
-
going to be given again typology, the
-
fulfillment of the Old Testament.
-
We're going to see Christ as the last
-
of the woman in Matthew chapter one just
-
like we see Genesis in Matthew chapter
-
one. We'll see.
-
We'll see.
-
And we'll see the beginning of the law
-
in Matthew 56 and there's a lot of
-
things we're going to delve into that
-
the first century Jew would have picked
-
up on. It should leave us humble, but it
-
should also leave us
-
known. This is good news. The gospel of
-
according to Matthew is that all the
-
promises made to Adam and Abraham and
-
Jesus are fulfilled in Christ. This is
-
good news and it will be our delight to
-
love him and
-
join.
-
We thank you Lord that we acknowledge
-
our sin and we are humbled before you
-
interfailed.
-
And Christ is indeed seated at the right
-
hand of the father extending mercy and
-
grace to us. Lord, I I pray father now
-
for those who don't yet know you who are
-
yet to confess their sins to you and to
-
repent and come from a life of a life of
-
faith in Christ. Lord, I pray that in
-
their hearts today I pray for our little
-
they
-
for the forgiveness
-
and I pray father that you give your
-
people confidence to proclaim the
-
lordship and the kingship of Jesus
-
Christ we would not leave to declare
-
that Christ is king
-
of kings the lord of lords the judge of
-
all the
