  1. Starting

  2. the book of Matthew this morning right

  3. off chapter one after 105 or so sermons

  4. in Genesis. Uh those sermons will come

  5. in handy as we come into the book of

  6. Matthew. Matthew alludes to Genesis a

  7. lot. Genesis. In Genesis, we see

  8. promises made to Adam and to Abraham and

  9. later on promises will be made to David.

  10. In the book of Matthew,

  11. we'll see those promises kept. It's a

  12. long wait for Messiah, a long way before

  13. Christ has come. Book of Matthew

  14. uniquely goes after a Hebrew, first

  15. century Hebrew audience. Mark is geared

  16. very much towards the Romans. Okay, it's

  17. a language, a quote scripture, post the

  18. Old Testament, but not like Matthew.

  19. Matthew is geared towards the Hebrew

  20. mind, the Hebrew leader of the first

  21. century who reads the Greek Old

  22. Testament. That is who Matthew is

  23. talking to. Luke has in mind a very

  24. Greek audience and a lot of the same

  25. things as Matthew, but Matthew is

  26. uniquely Jewish and written to an

  27. audience that read again and again and

  28. again the Old Testament. And so as we

  29. read every chapter in Matthew, there's

  30. going to be quotations of the prophets

  31. going to be illusions to the law, the

  32. Torah. And we're going to look at that

  33. this morning. We look at the major

  34. from the

  35. sign.

  36. The Jew of the first century has

  37. questions about does Jesus meet the

  38. criteria of being the Messiah we've been

  39. waiting for. We're going to see he comes

  40. at the proper time. He comes from the

  41. proper family. He he uh he does things

  42. that only Messiah could do. And he is

  43. the long awaited

  44. second Adam, the seed of Abraham and the

  45. son of David the king. So my title this

  46. morning is introduction to Matthew

  47. text. The point of this morning sermon

  48. is the promises made to Adam, Abraham

  49. and David are fulfilled in Christ. If

  50. you stand with me now for the reading of

  51. God's word, we'll start reading in

  52. Matthew 1

  53. verse one. The book of the genealogy of

  54. Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son

  55. of Abraham. Skipping down to the final

  56. verses of the book of Matthew 28.

  57. And Jesus came and said to them, "All

  58. authority in heaven and on earth has

  59. been given to me. Go therefore and make

  60. disciples of all nations, baptizing them

  61. in the name of the Father and of the Son

  62. and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to

  63. observe all that I have commanded you.

  64. And behold, I am with you always to the

  65. end of the age."

  66. Lord God, we thank you that you are a

  67. promise keeping

  68. God that you made promises to the

  69. fathers and the prophets that you have

  70. kept the person of your son Jesus Christ

  71. with the king that's coming Lord even as

  72. we are getting ready to enter into this

  73. Christmas season and we think about your

  74. incarnation your life on our behalf your

  75. death on our behalf and your exaltation

  76. God I pray that this Christmas with you

  77. especially focused on you our Lord and

  78. Savior that the king has come the

  79. kingdom has come and you are our Lord

  80. and Savior forever. We pray your Jesus

  81. name. Amen. You may be seated. You may

  82. be seated. So I started with the first

  83. verse of the Bible of the book of

  84. Matthew

  85. and I ended with the final verses of

  86. Matthew. We're really gonna see that the

  87. scene that begins in verse one and the

  88. final verses of Matthew, it shows Jesus

  89. as the last Adam to whom heaven and

  90. earth has been given. Adam was given to

  91. man. Now Christ has been given to him as

  92. the seed of Abraham. The promise made

  93. Abraham that Jesus is the fulfillment of

  94. that promise. Here is the seed of

  95. Abraham in whom all the nations of the

  96. earth will be blessed. And so here we we

  97. have Jesus saying go and teach all

  98. nations. And we see also the promise

  99. made to David that from him would come

  100. an everlasting king. And Jesus is that

  101. everlasting king. And he says I am with

  102. you always to the end of the age. Let's

  103. look here. I'm speak this morning and

  104. and look at verse one. Matthew 1. That's

  105. as far as we're going to get in Matthew

  106. 1 this morning. But we're going to look

  107. at a lot a lot of parts of the Bible

  108. that are reflected in this verse. The

  109. book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ,

  110. the son of David, the son of Abraham.

  111. Verse one calls out directly

  112. to whom promises were made that Jesus is

  113. the fulfillment of this concept of Jesus

  114. being the Messiah. Jesus is the Messiah.

  115. Jesus Christ. Christ is a Greek word for

  116. means anointed one. Someone who smeared

  117. with oil. The Hebrew word Mashiach. It

  118. also means anointed one. We get our word

  119. Messiah from the word Messiah. And we

  120. get our word Christ from the word. But

  121. they all mean the same thing, the

  122. anointed one. Christ is not his last

  123. name. Or maybe you could look him up in

  124. a first century telephone book. Christ

  125. is a title. It's a title. In the Old

  126. Testament, the the prophets were

  127. anointed with oil, the priests were

  128. anointed with oil, and the kings were

  129. anointed with oil. And a symbolic

  130. ceremony where he became the anointed

  131. one, a spot. But Jesus says, Jesus,

  132. the Christ, he is the anointed one that

  133. all former anointed ones pointed to. And

  134. so the first thing we do is asking the

  135. question, does Jesus meet the criteria

  136. of being the anointed one? And so we'll

  137. start off the book of Matthew. I'll get

  138. into it next week. A genealogy that

  139. demonstrates he comes from the exact

  140. family that that God promised the

  141. Messiah would come from. But as the

  142. anointed one, uh he is our prophet, our

  143. priest, and our king. And we will see in

  144. the book of Matthew, Jesus, a prophet.

  145. Matthew 567 showing the people their

  146. sins calling them to repentance. We'll

  147. see him as God's priest by bearing our

  148. sins on the cross in our place. And we

  149. will see him as our king exalted with

  150. all authority in heaven and in earth. My

  151. hope is that that just as encouraged the

  152. first century Jew that as a 21st century

  153. Christian you will be invigorated with

  154. the concept that Jesus indeed is king.

  155. He is all sorts of authority. He is

  156. God's sovereign and not just sovereign

  157. over us in a personal way. He has all

  158. authority in heaven and in earth. He is

  159. the king of kings and the lord of lords.

  160. He is the one by whom princes rightly

  161. reign by which they will be judged if

  162. they violate him. We are not

  163. secularists. We are Christians and we

  164. acknowledge the authority of Jesus

  165. Christ. He is Lord. Is he our personal

  166. savior? Yes, indeed. Personal. He died

  167. for you. If you trust in him, he will

  168. save you. But he's more than our

  169. personal savior. He is the one from whom

  170. all authority in heaven and earth is

  171. derived. This is what clearly put forth

  172. in the book of Matthew. We will see the

  173. word

  174. 55 times the word kingdom will appear.

  175. It is a it is a theme of Matthew. Jesus

  176. is the king who's on the throne of

  177. David. Jesus is the promised king

  178. Adam.

  179. We see here

  180. the book of the genealogy of Jesus

  181. Christ the son of David the son of

  182. Abraham. Now that word

  183. is the word.

  184. It's the word.

  185. The book of the genealogology

  186. is the book of the genesis of Jesus the

  187. Messiah the son of David the son of

  188. Abraham. The word means source and

  189. origin. So when you're talking about

  190. your genealogy you're talking about

  191. where you came from your origin. This is

  192. the Greek word hol I think 13 times at

  193. least in the book of Genesis. The book

  194. of Genesis as we read after 525

  195. in the book of Genesis. We read many

  196. genealogies.

  197. We read the genealogy of Adam and the

  198. genealogy of Noah and the genealogy of

  199. Abraham. We have many genealogies. And

  200. the genealogies show record of the

  201. people for whom the promises were made.

  202. God made certain promises to Adam of

  203. which we are all descendants and we are

  204. the heirs of those. God made certain

  205. promises to Abraham that all the nations

  206. would be blessed and we are in another

  207. sense the heirs of that and Jesus made

  208. promises to David. Genealogies are

  209. important because it's God saying I made

  210. a promise and I want you to keep record

  211. so that when the promise is fulfilled

  212. you know I fulfilled that promise and we

  213. talk about that a lot in the book of

  214. Genesis. The book of Genesis is a book

  215. of origin the origin of the Adam and the

  216. earth but also the the of the families

  217. of the earth and the origins of the

  218. priesthood and the origins of of of

  219. substitutionary atonement dying in the

  220. place of the sinner. And so here in the

  221. first verse, Matthew chooses to use the

  222. word Genesis which is the name of the

  223. book in the Greek. The Hebrew reader

  224. when he reads the book of the Genesis of

  225. Jesus Christ his mind comes back to

  226. promises.

  227. So while the verse mention specifically

  228. Abraham and David

  229. of all the places this word Genesis is

  230. used in the Greek translation is only

  231. called the book of the Genesis one time.

  232. The book of the Genesis is in Genesis 5

  233. 1-3 here. Look at what it says. It says

  234. in Genesis 5 going back to Genesis. This

  235. is the book

  236. of the generations of Adam. This is the

  237. book of the Genesis of Adam. It's the

  238. same.

  239. But here Adam

  240. created man. He made them in the

  241. likeness of God. Male and female he

  242. created them. And he blessed them and

  243. made them man. when they were created

  244. when Adam lived 130 years from father to

  245. son in his own likeness out of his image

  246. and made himself.

  247. So the one time it's used uh in the Old

  248. Testament this phrase the book of

  249. Genesis is in reference to Adam. It

  250. refers to the genesis of Noah and the

  251. genesis of Abraham. And here's the of

  252. the generations of Adam. And I believe

  253. the reason that uh Matthew is doing this

  254. is he wants us to think about Adam.

  255. I'm going to show you promises were made

  256. to Adam and Jesus called the last

  257. Adam.

  258. All of us are descended from

  259. Adam we all partake of his sin nature.

  260. But we can either be legally in Adam as

  261. sinners or we can be legally drafted

  262. into Christ and be in the last Adam and

  263. which we are partaker not of his sin but

  264. of his righteousness. So Matthew wants a

  265. first century thinking about Genesis and

  266. the promises that were made. I'm going

  267. to show you some parallels between

  268. Jesus and what Adam had and what Jesus

  269. says of it's I find it very fascinating

  270. and in Genesis 126 28 we see Adam's

  271. dominion. Then God said, "Let us make

  272. man in our image after our likeness, and

  273. let them humanity have dominion over the

  274. fish of the sea, and over the birds of

  275. the heaven, and over the livestock, and

  276. over all the earth, and over every

  277. creeping thing that creeps on the

  278. earth." So God created man in his own

  279. image, in the image of God, he created

  280. him, male and female, he created them.

  281. And God blessed them. God said to them,

  282. "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the

  283. earth and subdue it and have dominion

  284. over the fish of the sea and over the

  285. birds of the heavens and over every

  286. living thing that lives on the earth."

  287. Okay. So, Adam had

  288. it.

  289. It makes him a king. He had a kingdom.

  290. He had dominion over the earth. But what

  291. happens to Adam is Adam will fall and

  292. his kingdom. But what do we see in

  293. Christ? Christ has given his kingdom

  294. back. So the verse I've already

  295. said, all authority in heaven and on

  296. earth has been given to me. All

  297. authority

  298. has

  299. dominion at the end of

  300. they reflect each other. And it's a

  301. major theme of the book of Matthew is

  302. Christ has dominion. He is the last

  303. Adam. He is our king. He is our

  304. authority. All authority comes from him.

  305. Authority in the home. Authority in the

  306. civil government. Authority in the

  307. church. Our own authority as human

  308. beings derive from Christ authority.

  309. It's all authority in heaven and on

  310. earth. No, he doesn't just say all

  311. authority on earth or all authority in

  312. heaven. is all authority in heaven and

  313. on earth. When we say Christ is king, we

  314. mean he is king. All right. But Adam

  315. also reflected Christ. Adam is tested

  316. for sin.

  317. In Genesis 3:16, the Lord God took him

    Genesis 3:16

  318. and put him in the garden of Eden to

  319. work it. The Lord God commanded the man

  320. saying, "You must surely eat of every

  321. tree of the garden, but of the tree of

  322. the knowledge of good and evil. You

  323. shall not eat for in that day that you

  324. eat of it you shall surely die. So God

  325. gives a practical test. Adam is created

  326. sinless and his wife is sinless. And in

  327. order to show his love a

  328. tree in the midst of the garden of all

  329. the tree you may freely eat but the tree

  330. of the knowledge of good and evil you

  331. shall not eat of it. The tree of it you

  332. shall surely not.

  333. This is a practical way for Adam and Eve

  334. to show their love to God by continuing

  335. in obedience and fellowship with him.

  336. They had two trees set before them.

  337. There's the tree of life from which they

  338. could eat and they could enjoy it and

  339. live forever. And they have the tree and

  340. the knowledge of good and evil or the

  341. tree of death if you will. And so this

  342. test was given to Adam. Adam was tested

  343. in a gardener.

  344. Matthew 41 was led up by the spirit into

  345. the wilderness to be tempted by the

  346. devil. And Adam is

  347. wild.

  348. Adam is driven from the garden by angels

  349. and at the end of the temptation angels

  350. come and minister to Jesus. This is a

  351. contract

  352. fail.

  353. So we see Jesus as the second Adam. We

  354. see Adam fall in Genesis 36

  355. at the tree of an evil. But the serpent

  356. said to the woman, "You will not surely

  357. die. For God knows that when you eat of

  358. it, your eyes will be opened and you

  359. will be like God, knowing good and evil.

  360. So when the woman saw that the tree was

  361. good for food, and it was a delight, and

  362. that the tree was desire, he desired to

  363. make one wise, she took of it and ate.

  364. And she also gave some to her husband

  365. was with her and he ate. So Adam,

  366. they

  367. just

  368. think you can

  369. be as

  370. selfexating

  371. himself to pass through the womb of a

  372. woman. What a contrast. Adam

  373. selfexation.

  374. Jesus being God humiliation

  375. to do what? To die on a tree. Adam is

  376. temped at a tree and failed. Jesus

  377. tested on a tree.

  378. We will see Jesus

  379. on a tree. The question why

  380. why not a sacrificial altar like the

  381. oldest

  382. I think the symbolism is very strong

  383. that God chose as a means of sacrifice

  384. for God's son. Adam was at a tree. Jesus

  385. was tested on a tree. Adam failed.

  386. Christ prevailed. He is the greater

  387. Adam. He is the son of God who

  388. prevailed.

  389. Genesis 3:4-6

    Genesis 3:4–6

  390. and the serpent

  391. the Lord God saidp

  392. here

  393. people laugh. This isn't merely a

  394. talking.

  395. This is an intelligent supernatural

  396. being who is temping Adam and Eve to

  397. usurp God's authority and to become God

  398. for themselves to be a self

  399. above all livestock and above all beasts

  400. of the field on your belly you shall go

  401. and dust you shall eat all the days of

  402. your life. I will put enmity between you

  403. and the woman and between your offspring

  404. your seed and her offspring. He shall

  405. bruise your head and you shall lose his.

  406. Now notice here it says there will be

  407. there will be war between the seed of

  408. the serpent and the seed of the woman.

  409. The seed of the woman. Biologically who

  410. has the seed, the man or the woman?

  411. The man. But in this verse, it promises

  412. that the seed of the woman will crush

  413. the serpent's head. What will we see

  414. later in Genesis chapter one and later

  415. this month? The virgin birth, the seed

  416. of the woman, the man, finally a child

  417. will be born to a woman who will crush

  418. the serpent's head. You see this in

  419. Matthew 27:32

    Matthew 27:32

  420. later in the book as they went out they

  421. found the mannequel

  422. this man to carry his cross made of

  423. what?

  424. And when they came to a place called

  425. the woman

  426. where Jesus will die

  427. of the woman born of a virgin one is now

  428. going to crush the head at a place

  429. called the place of the

  430. And they offered him wine to drink mixed

  431. with gold was bitter but was a pain

  432. reliever. But when he prayed for he

  433. would not drink it. See Adam and Eve

  434. perceiving that the fruit of the tree

  435. was sweet. They took it down. But Jesus

  436. being offered a reliever

  437. rejected it. He rejected all of the

  438. natural relief that could be given

  439. because he was there to get silver mind

  440. and a place of judgment to bear our sins

  441. and it would not refuse to drink strong

  442. drink in the place of judgment. Verse 35

  443. and when they had crucified him they

  444. divided his garments among them by

  445. casting lots. That means he was naked.

  446. But how did God find him? Naked in the

  447. garden.

  448. Then they sat down and kept watch over

  449. him there and over his head they put the

  450. charge against him which read this is

  451. Jesus the king of the Jews. Then two

  452. robbers were crucified with him one on

  453. the right and one on the left. So in

  454. Genesis we see Adam beginning

  455. and we see and then in Matthew we see

  456. Jesus born of a virgin woman. We

  457. prevailing in tempting

  458. out a tree. We see Jesus on a tree. We

  459. see Jesus the seed of a woman crushing

  460. the serpent. This is all intentional.

  461. But this is not merely the orchestrating

  462. of of man. This is the work of God. God

  463. orchestrated all of history to point

  464. the whole Old Testament. the Jew who

  465. read the the Torah at least three years

  466. went through the entire Torah through

  467. the synagogue year after year after

  468. year. He's making these connections as

  469. we go through the book of Matthew to the

  470. best of my ability. I'm going to try to

  471. find those connections which I've

  472. already

  473. talked

  474. and what I hope will happen is it will

  475. invigorate your fa your faith. book is

  476. not the man's mind. This book is divine

  477. because it's the very growth of God

  478. telling us God's story. This is the

  479. meaning of history, the meaning of life.

  480. It all points to Christ who is the last

  481. Adam who is the seed of the woman who

  482. trustes the serpent. And we will see

  483. this in chapter one through the virgin

  484. birth. The king has come and born of a

  485. virgin. Now moving on in Genesis the

  486. of Jesus Christ. We also read that he's

  487. the son of David, the son of Abraham.

  488. Certain promises are again made to

  489. Abraham that will be alluded to very

  490. heavily in the book of Matthew Genesis

  491. 12 1-3. This is what Abraham gets

  492. introduced into the story of Genesis.

  493. Now the Lord said to Abram, "Go from

  494. your country and your kindred and your

  495. father's house to the land where I show

  496. you. And I will make you a great nation.

  497. And I will bless you and I will make

  498. your name great so that you will be a

  499. blessing. I will bless those who bless

  500. you. And him who honors you, I him who

  501. dishonors you, I will. And in you all

  502. the families of the earth shall be

  503. blessed." Paul refer to this as the

  504. inbations

  505. of the earth will be blessed. The

  506. blessing will not just be for his

  507. biological

  508. but in Christ all the nations of the

  509. earth are blessed. He reiterates this

  510. again.

  511. Now is veryap

  512. and I want you to take him on a thour

  513. and when you get there I want you to

  514. offer up your on a particular mountain

  515. that I will show you. It's got to be a

  516. specific one. I will show you when you

  517. get there. He goes to the area

  518. Jerusalem.

  519. That's where Jerusalem

  520. offer.

  521. But I believe on the very spot where God

  522. Abraham

  523. only son that he loved God only

  524. know what's in your heart. I know I I

  525. know it's in your heart and because

  526. you've done this makes some great

  527. promises. Um and and he he promises the

  528. uh he authored in the place of his son

  529. Isaac, the promised son. And and he says

  530. this in verse 16, he said, "By myself I

  531. have sworn before Lord because you have

  532. done this and have not withheld your

  533. son, your only son. I will surely bless

  534. you and I will surely multiply your

  535. offspring as the stars of heaven and the

  536. stand on the seashore. and your

  537. offspring shall develop to David his

  538. enemy. And in your offspring shall all

  539. nations of the earth be blessed because

  540. he obey my voice. And what's interesting

  541. in Hebrew is the word offering here

  542. isn't plural.

  543. And we might just say, well, okay, yeah,

  544. it's one, but I know in Genesis, but

  545. the promise

  546. Paul says, "Now the promise were made to

  547. Abraham and to his offspring." It does

  548. not say and offer referring to referring

  549. to one and your offspring who is

  550. according to Paul

  551. Abraham is that one particular offspring

  552. beloved son all the nations of the earth

  553. will be left.

  554. And so what do we read? Going back to

  555. our final verse that I repeated

  556. repeatedly

  557. verse 18

  558. all authority in heaven and earth has

  559. been given therefore and make disciples

  560. of all nations baptizing them in the

  561. name of the father and of the son and of

  562. the holy spirit teaching them to observe

  563. all that I commanded you and behold I am

  564. with you always to the end of the age

  565. the final verses of the book of Matthew

  566. are about taking this message of Christ

  567. the last Adam the seed Abraham, the one

  568. who sits on the throne of David in front

  569. of all nations and in him all the

  570. nations are going to be blessed because

  571. people from all nations are going to be

  572. are going to believe and be saved. This

  573. is a major theme of the book of Matthew

  574. is that Jesus is the seed of Abraham. He

  575. is the fulfillment of that promise and

  576. his whole nation will be formed. And

  577. just like his first words to Abraham was

  578. Abraham go from your country

  579. here in Matthew 28 or his command is go

  580. therefore

  581. as you go

  582. and this

  583. glorious message of the death

  584. resurrection of Jesus to all nations

  585. that all nations will be blessed in

  586. So here in Matthew,

  587. the genesis of Jesus Christ, the son of

  588. David, the son of Abraham

  589. referred to his promise that all nations

  590. would be blessed in him. All right, now

  591. we got David to cover.

  592. David,

  593. love the story of David. David starts

  594. off with a shepherd boy and he's tending

  595. his father's sheep and God says I want

  596. my own heart

  597. David becomes king David makes some

  598. major mistakes and

  599. crimes and God is very gracious to him

  600. and forgiving him and so at one point

  601. David says I want to build a house

  602. temple for the Lord I want to build a

  603. temple and That's a great idea. Go do

  604. that. Go do everything in your heart to

  605. do it. God directs

  606. me

  607. to go and talk. He doesn't

  608. your son will, but you won't. And he

  609. makes certain promises to actually go

  610. God's very pleased with David's heart.

  611. David wants to build temple. David wants

  612. to see God's arwelling and beautiful

  613. temple. And so he makes certain

  614. when your beliefs are fulfilled and you

  615. lie down with your fathers, I will raise

  616. up for up your

  617. shall come from your body and I will

  618. establish his kingdom. He shall build a

  619. house for my enemy and I will establish

  620. the throne of his kingdom forever. I

  621. will be a father and he shall be a son.

  622. When he commit iniquity, I will

  623. discipline him with the men with the

  624. stripes of the sons of men. steadfast

  625. love will not depart from them as I take

  626. it from Saul my foot away from before

  627. you and your house and your kingdom

  628. shall be made sure forever before me

  629. your throne shall be established forever

  630. now there's certain ways in which his

  631. son

  632. of

  633. Solomon did fall into and did him and

  634. did thank him kind of the modern

  635. vernacular

  636. of treatment

  637. but Jesus

  638. and Solomon's descendants did end up

  639. leaving the kingdom. So he's not the

  640. everlasting king. So the Jews read this

  641. and they're saying well the son of David

  642. everlasting has an everlasting kingdom

  643. that will be made forever that will be

  644. established forever.

  645. that they are waiting at the time.

  646. The Jews are waiting for the son of

  647. David who will have a kingdom

  648. established forever. This promise was

  649. later clarified through the prophets

  650. through Daniel and Isaiah and others

  651. that God would take of the family of

  652. David and make an everlasting kingdom

  653. to come at the time.

  654. We're going to look at a very precise

  655. timeline at that time.

  656. The wise men will come and they're

  657. coming because they have a timeline and

  658. a star that directs them.

  659. But they knew it's time for Messiah to

  660. show up.

  661. It's time for him to show up. Where is

  662. he? Where is he everlasting?

  663. Well, the word king, as I told you, the

  664. word uh kingdom is used

  665. in the book of Matthew, more than any

  666. other book. It's a little bit less than

  667. Luke

  668. is a shorter book, but the theme of the

  669. gospel of Matthew.

  670. Here's just a few of them. Matthew 32

  671. the preaching of John the Baptist with

  672. John the Baptist.

  673. The kingdom of heaven is at

  674. the kingdom at the time. The kingdom of

  675. heaven is at hand. In Matthew 4:17,

    Matthew 4:17

  676. Jesus takes up the same message. From

  677. that time,

  678. the kingdom of heaven is at

  679. hand. It's nearby. It's not thousands of

  680. years away. It's at hand.

  681. Matthew 4:23

    Matthew 4:23

  682. the uh we see Jesus and he went

  683. throughout all Geing in their synagogue

  684. and proclaiming the gospel of the

  685. kingdom and healing every sickness and

  686. every affliction affliction among the

  687. people Jesus preaching the gospel of the

  688. kingdom the good news of the kingdom

  689. 53

  690. blessed are the poor there is the

  691. kingdom of heaven

  692. Matthew 12:28

    Matthew 12:28

  693. by the spirit of God that I demonstr

  694. to whom David was made the promise that

  695. his son will sit on his kingdom forever

  696. and Jesus saying all authority is given

  697. to me in heaven and in earth saying I

  698. gin

  699. he lost it

  700. but he forfeited it

  701. now has come at the right hand of the

  702. father and all authority in heaven and

  703. earth has been given to him and So as we

  704. read the book of Matthew, we'll get to

  705. chapter 13. We'll hear the parables of

  706. his kingdom. He's teaching us what the

  707. kingdom is like. Now this is one of the

  708. things like talking about what's the

  709. nature of that kingdom. Jesus makes it

  710. very clear. It's not like the kingdom of

  711. this world. It's a different kind of

  712. kingdom.

  713. This kingdom is an inside out kingdom.

  714. The kingdom is within you. The kingdom

  715. starts from the inside of its way

  716. outward. Other kingdoms have to impose

  717. from

  718. fear and promise of reward and bribery

  719. rule. But Christ changes us from the

  720. inside.

  721. What's very clear in the book of Matthew

  722. I think

  723. is that the time of the kingdom has come

  724. in the first century and Jesus said it

  725. comes out and delivered people.

  726. So over the next couple years as we go

  727. through I don't know if it'll take years

  728. or notice

  729. maybe more

  730. week after week after week about the

  731. kingdom of God

  732. and everyone comes under the authority

  733. of Christ. He's either your Lord and

  734. Judge or he's your Lord and Savior.

  735. and think about it. He is your lord.

  736. He rules at the right hand of the father

  737. and nations are judged by the words of

  738. his

  739. instit.

  740. I believe that there's something

  741. physical present in the bread and

  742. present in the wine. I don't believe in

  743. that. But physical is not the most real

  744. thing. In fact, before there was a

  745. physical universe, there was eternal

  746. God, father, son, and holy spirit. When

  747. we think of Christy

  748. in a powerful way, he is walking amongst

  749. the candlestick. He's walking in his

  750. church. He's evaluating them. knows our

  751. hearts. And people say that, "Oh, well,

  752. yeah, I'm doing some bad things, but God

  753. knows my heart."

  754. It's actually terrifying.

  755. If you're walking contrary to his will,

  756. if you come to him as a child and you

  757. say, "Lord, I'm struggling. God, I need

  758. your help. Father, I need you as my

  759. deliverer." If you come to them in

  760. humility with the knee bowed, there's a

  761. lot of comfort in that. But if you come

  762. to the rebel, there's no comfort in the

  763. fact that he knows our heart. When we

  764. come to table, God's people, we do this.

  765. We heal

  766. at Matthew 28:18, the final verses of

    Matthew 28:18

  767. the book of Matthew. Let's look at it

  768. one more time. And Jesus came and said,

  769. "All authority

  770. in heaven and on earth has been given to

  771. me."

  772. Go therefore

  773. given all authority and you're my

  774. disciples. What do I want you to do? I

  775. want you to go. Go therefore and make

  776. disciples of all nations.

  777. Today the modern concept

  778. laws and geography. The first century

  779. when they heard the word

  780. of the earth to go and teach all the

  781. families of the earthaches

  782. and after they believe on the Lord Jesus

  783. Christ, what do we do? We baptize them.

  784. If baptizing them in the name of the

  785. father and of the son and of the holy

  786. Baptism.

  787. We require baptism.

  788. Baptism is much like a marriage ceremony

  789. where you say your vows. Baptism is the

  790. vows.

  791. Baptism

  792. to you. I'm trusting in you. I identify

  793. with your death and resurrection on my

  794. behalf. And I'm yours.

  795. by union with Christ. Uh what he has

  796. becomes ours and what we have becomes

  797. his heon

  798. and we take his rightous upon us by

  799. union with Christ a great

  800. he says I'll take your sins

  801. and and we take his righteousness this

  802. is what we teach all nations we preach

  803. the gospel the newsary

  804. atonement, how he died on a tree.

  805. And then what teaching them to observe

  806. all that I have in the name of what

  807. we

  808. are command of Matthew? There are

  809. promises to be believed. There are

  810. warnings to be heeded. There are

  811. commandments to be obeyed. as his

  812. people, we are commanded to obey him.

  813. So week after week, yes, we're going to

  814. preach the gospel and the good news of

  815. some preachers say, "Oh, that's

  816. moralistic preaching." That's not

  817. moralism. What moralism is if you're

  818. telling people you can be saved by good

  819. works

  820. but Jesus taught the disciples

  821. we're going to spend some time in

  822. Matthew 56

  823. amount of time

  824. when I was a young man first year in

  825. Bible college I went to Bible college

  826. and I come out I'd gone to a public

  827. school where I' been I thought I was a

  828. very alone

  829. And I started reading I'm like Lord I

  830. just I

  831. want to be I want to do

  832. and so for quite a while I don't even

  833. know how long it was quite a while every

  834. morning I

  835. serve

  836. memorize this thing. I read it so much.

  837. Matthew seemed easy. I think in three

  838. days I memorized

  839. I read it so many times it's like my

  840. ears up and then within a week or so I I

  841. memorized Matthew 5.

  842. A great challenge for you. It takes some

  843. time to do it

  844. not not in an effort to try to merit or

  845. earn God's favor.

  846. God's people. He's our king. We should

  847. submit to him.

  848. We need to be the kind of people we

  849. should say to all things.

  850. Jesus teaches us what to value, how to

  851. live, how to feed our enemies, what type

  852. of what type of he

  853. doesn't go. It's very practical.

  854. I found it very convincing.

  855. really humbled me greatly

  856. just reading the repeatedly

  857. therefore perfectrifice.

  858. init.

  859. I'm not as honest as I thought I was.

  860. I'm not as free as I thought I was. I'm

  861. not I'm not as generous as he called me

  862. to be. I don't love my enemies like I'm

  863. supposed to. Nor do I love my neighbor

  864. as I'm supposed to. Nor do I love God as

  865. I'm supposed to.

  866. It should leave you humble when you're

  867. done.

  868. And when you're humbled by it, you

  869. should say

  870. I want to be more.

  871. That's what it should be. We're a lot of

  872. people in the book of Matthew. We're

  873. going to be given again typology, the

  874. fulfillment of the Old Testament.

  875. We're going to see Christ as the last

  876. of the woman in Matthew chapter one just

  877. like we see Genesis in Matthew chapter

  878. one. We'll see.

  879. We'll see.

  880. And we'll see the beginning of the law

  881. in Matthew 56 and there's a lot of

  882. things we're going to delve into that

  883. the first century Jew would have picked

  884. up on. It should leave us humble, but it

  885. should also leave us

  886. known. This is good news. The gospel of

  887. according to Matthew is that all the

  888. promises made to Adam and Abraham and

  889. Jesus are fulfilled in Christ. This is

  890. good news and it will be our delight to

  891. love him and

  892. join.

  893. We thank you Lord that we acknowledge

  894. our sin and we are humbled before you

  895. interfailed.

  896. And Christ is indeed seated at the right

  897. hand of the father extending mercy and

  898. grace to us. Lord, I I pray father now

  899. for those who don't yet know you who are

  900. yet to confess their sins to you and to

  901. repent and come from a life of a life of

  902. faith in Christ. Lord, I pray that in

  903. their hearts today I pray for our little

  904. they

  905. for the forgiveness

  906. and I pray father that you give your

  907. people confidence to proclaim the

  908. lordship and the kingship of Jesus

  909. Christ we would not leave to declare

  910. that Christ is king

  911. of kings the lord of lords the judge of

  912. all the
