This morning we're back in Matthew
Matthew 1 chapter mention
-
chapter 1. Continuing our second sermon
-
here in Matthew chapter 1. Start off
Matthew 1 chapter mention
-
with a little bit of an illustration
-
as a means of thought. Suppose you were
-
thinking about buying a car and you
-
talked to all your young friends, school
-
kids at church and you said, "Hey,
-
thinking about buying this car. What do
-
you think of this car?" Like, "Oh, that
-
car is great. It's so cool looking. It's
-
so fast. And then you think, "Okay,
-
that's great. Now I want to go talk to
-
the mechanics I know and the people that
-
are in the manufacturing industry. I'm
-
going to talk to some older people. They
-
all say, "That thing's a piece of junk.
-
Don't buy it." Who would you listen to?
-
If you're wise, you wouldn't listen to
-
your young friends. You listen to
-
mechanics. You listen to people that
-
know what they're talking about. Matthew
-
has a hurdle to overcome because he's
-
talking to first century Jews
-
persuading them that Jesus indeed is the
-
Messiah that we've long been waited
-
waiting for as we saw in the first
-
but to the first century Jew there's a
-
problem
-
who
-
believes that Jesus is Messiah
-
Gentile that is non Jew
-
tax collectors, prostitutes,
-
women
-
did not did not necessarily bolster his
-
testimony to be a woman. And Matthew is
-
trying to appeal to a first century
-
Jewish audience and persuade them that
-
Jesus is the Messiah. But the first
-
century Jew is saying the experts say
-
he's not. the scribes, the Pharisees,
-
the priests, the temple, all the experts
-
are saying Jesus is not the Messiah. And
-
then simultaneously,
-
the the people that a Jew may not have
-
as much respect for are believing in
-
record numbers.
-
Well,
-
this is God's plan. And we're going to
-
see this morning, we're going to be
-
reading in the family tree of Jesus.
-
We're going to read the genealogy. Last
-
week we didn't read the genealogy, but
-
we alluded to the genealogy. And in the
-
genealogy, there's going to be some
-
added phrases that are added in addition
-
to the so and so is the son of so and
-
so. There's some little additions.
-
There's some little additions. And
-
particularly women,
-
great women like Sarah not mentioned.
-
Rebecca not mentioned Rachel not
-
mentioned mentioned
-
Rahab Ruth Ba
-
women who had a past
-
women who would not have been highly
-
esteemed. And yet
-
three of those women are the
-
grandmothers, the great grandmothers of
-
David. And every Jew knew that they were
-
in the family tree of King David.
-
And they serve as an illustration that
-
God takes the lowly, the sinful, the
-
Gentiles, and drafts them in by faith.
-
And God will often pass over the
-
seemingly religious
-
righteous.
-
So it's a major theme of Matthew Gentile
-
in
-
we will see this little hint in the
-
genealogy is actually one of the big
-
themes of Matthew is that God is saving
-
that this is a global faith. This is
-
what we call a small Catholic faith. It
-
is universal. It's not just a regional
-
faith for Israel anymore. It is now
-
going global so that all can be included
-
and you can be included in this family
-
tree. There's a family tree leading up
-
to Christ and there's a family tree
-
proceeding from Christ. But it's not a
-
blood. It's a covenant
-
by union with Christ.
-
Though you may have a sexually immoral
-
Though you may have some horrible sins
-
that no one even knows about, yet you
-
faith by union with Christ can be
-
included in this family tree. If you
-
stand with me God's word, we're going to
-
read in Matthew 1.
-
Matthew 1, the book of the genealogy of
-
Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son
-
of Abraham.
-
Abraham was the father of Isaac and the
-
Jacob and Jacob the father of Judah and
-
his brothers and Judah the father of
-
Perez the father of Hezron the father of
-
Ram the father of
-
the father of and the father of
-
the father of by
-
and the father of by
-
and the father Jesse and Jesse the
-
father of David the king. And David was
-
the father of Solomon by the wife of
-
Solomon the father of Riaboam. And
-
Riaboam the father of Elijah. And Elijah
-
the father of Asaf the father of
-
Jehoshaphat. And Jehoshaphat the father
-
of Jorum the father of Uzziah. And Uziah
-
the father of Jam. And the father of
-
Ahaz.
-
the father of Hezekiah. And Hezekiah the
-
father of Manasseh and Manasseh the
-
father of Amos and Amos the father of
-
Josiah. And Josiah the father of
-
Jeconiah and his brothers at the time of
-
the deportation to Babylon. And after
-
the deportation of Babylon, Jeaniah was
-
the father of
-
the father of Elim. And the father of
-
Azor and Azor the father of Zadok. And
-
Zadok the father of
-
the father of
-
the father of Elazar the father of
-
the father of Jacob. Jacob, the father
-
of Joseph, the husband of Mary, of whom
-
Jesus was born.
-
Lord God, we thank you that Father, you
-
came from heaven above to the
-
condescended. You came down to walk our
-
streets. You came to be born not to a
-
wealthy person, although that would have
-
been a great humiliation.
-
He came to be born to a humble carpenter
-
and his wife and raised
-
the streets of Nazareth. And you did
-
that because of your great love for us.
-
You were willing to become poor that we
-
might be made. You were willing to come
-
and give yourself that we might be
-
included in your family. Lord, we thank
-
you. We are saved by
-
grace through.
-
This is the last great
-
of the Bible. Granted, Luke also has a
-
genealogy, but what I'm saying is
-
whether Luke is first or Matthew comes
-
first
-
of
-
the great
-
in the Bible.
-
And as we saw last time, this genealogy
-
shows that God has kept his promises
-
first to Adam, then to Abraham, and then
-
to
-
raise up to David to sit on his throne,
-
a son who would have an everlasting
-
kingdom. And the genealogy is given to
-
Jesus that promised that God made
-
certain promises. And this is the record
-
of the family line up to Christ that
-
shows that he
-
being the son of David, being the son of
-
Abraham to be the fulfillment of those
-
after
-
anybody who's ever tried to read through
-
the Bible in that large portions of
-
scriptures and chronicles that are
-
geneal and people often want to pass
-
over them. Sometimes there's some real
-
jewels in those genealogies like wow
-
that really
-
but a lot of people skip them because so
-
and so and so and so James
-
people get bored of it and they want
-
they want to skip on that but from God's
-
vantage point it's very important
-
because from God's vantage point God is
-
demonstrating to us that he made
-
particular promises to particular people
-
Adam and Eve made the promise that the
-
seed of the woman would crush the
-
Adam we looked at last week Jesus the
-
last Adam who ata the hill of the skull
-
crushed the serpent's head to Abraham he
-
made a promise that he would make him of
-
his seed all the nations of the earth
-
would be blessed and also from his
-
atonement for sinapter
-
22 gyra my provider not provider of my
-
electric bill but he was a provider of
-
my atonement that's the emphas
-
we talked about in Genesis 22 and then
-
the day that he made the promise that of
-
his own body he would make a son to sit
-
on his throne with an everlasting
-
kingdom
-
that promise kept that promise no more
-
testament after this genealogy we're
-
done with genealogy
-
they're no longer important but don't
-
don't make they extremely important
-
until Christ came so important that when
-
Ezra comes back from the captivity
-
there's certain people where you want to
-
participate in the rebuilding of the
-
walls right where's your genealogy we
-
don't have one then you're excluded you
-
can't participate
-
participation we don't know if you're
-
really Jews or not your family record
-
in the book of Nehemiah I'm Sorry. Ezra
-
uh Ezra finds out that certain of the
-
people, certain of the priests and
-
chapter 10 have married foreign lines
-
and God said you're going to have to
-
divorce your wife
-
yet. And God did not want them to
-
intermingle with the pagans around them
-
and lose track of of their faith because
-
God God was very protective like like a
-
hen is protective of an egg. God was
-
very protective of the the family line
-
of of Christ and the priesthood until
-
Christ came. After Christ comes, we're
-
told in 1 Corinthians 7, if you're if
-
you're a believer and you married an
-
unbeliever, presuming you were you
-
became a believer before actually you
-
came to faith in Christ, you were
-
already married to an unbeliever. He
-
says if you have an unbelieving spouse
-
who's content as well, if you don't stay
-
with them
-
for ever marry an unbeliever, even in
-
the New Testament, but if you're already
-
married to an unbeliever, then you try
-
to win them to Christ by your life and
-
your example. talk about that in
-
the Old Testament marriage to an
-
unbeliever was so forbidden that in Ezra
-
he said divorce your unbelieving
-
what what has changed what changes
-
Christ
-
and the family line is not what's
-
important is what is important faith in
-
Christ with Christ and now it's no
-
longer an issue of you come from a
-
particular tribe a particular family the
-
issue is have you put your faith in
-
Jesus
-
You have
-
this language of union with Christ.
-
When we come into
-
Christ and his dwells within us, the
-
spirit of God comes to dwell in the
-
believer.
-
And by his spirit dwelling in us, we
-
have
-
you become a temple of God. No longer
-
does God dwell in temples made with
-
men's hands. dwells in individuals who
-
have consecrated themselves by faith in
-
Christ. His spirit dwells in us and we
-
have union with Christ. We are one with
-
Christ.
-
And since we have union with Christ, our
-
family tree is his family tree. The one
-
that matters is we are union with Christ
-
by faith and therefore his royal line is
-
our royal line because we are found in
-
him.
-
How does that work? Well, how does it
-
work? When a woman marries a man and she
-
takes his last name and his bank account
-
becomes her bank account,
-
she leaves her father and mother. He
-
leaves his father and mother. They form
-
a new family. They have union. The two
-
become one. That is one of the types of
-
union is when a man and woman become one
-
flesh together in marriage. They have
-
union. His becomes hers and hers becomes
-
his. His body is now her body. First
-
Corinthians 7 says and her body is his
-
body. They have union. They're owners of
-
each other. They have union with each
-
other. And in the same way when we come
-
to faith in Christ, we repent of our
-
sins. We put our faith in him. His
-
righteousness becomes our righteousness.
-
We are called by his name. We are part
-
of his family. We are grafted into his
-
family tree. Welcome dear believer to
-
the royal family. You are sons and
-
daughters of the king
-
by union with Christ.
-
Christ. All right, let's get down now.
-
Let's look at this verse by verse one.
-
We're actually not going to focus on the
-
last verses.
-
Probably one more sermon in the
-
genealogy. I didn't cover but we're
-
going to pay attention to the breaks in
-
the pattern. First of all, let's look at
-
verse one again. This is our last week.
-
Our verse last week, the book of the
-
genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of
-
David, the son of Abraham. Remember last
-
week I
-
gives
-
the book of
-
the same phrase for Adam.
-
I believe it's the book of the genesis
-
of the book of the uh in the Greek it's
-
the same word the book of the genesis of
-
Christ the son of David the son of
-
Abraham and again Abraham was made the
-
promise that in him all nations will be
-
in him
-
all nations
-
will be blessed in Christ, Jew and
-
Gentile, male and female, bond, slave,
-
free. In Christ, we are blessed. Christ
-
is that promise kept to Abraham.
-
And to David, God made the promise that
-
he would have a son that would have an
-
everlasting kingdom. And so, as you saw
-
last week, major theme in the book of
-
Matthew is the kingdom of God.
-
525 I said it last week
-
of Matthew it is used more in Matthew
-
than any other book the word kingdom
-
it's the gospel of the kingdom Jesus is
-
the king
-
as we saw last week in Matthew 28
-
all authority in heaven earth has been
-
given me that my friends is a kingdom
-
Christ at the right hand of the father
-
a throne and rules the nations by the
-
word of his power.
-
He has all authority in heaven and
-
earth. Jesus is the promise to David
-
Abraham and Adam who is the biolog
-
between Adam and Jesus. You're either in
-
Adam family or you're in Christ family
-
And so this family tree that we read
-
about, you're either in it or you're not
-
in it. You may be a Jew and not be in
-
it. You may be a Gentile and be in it.
-
Maybe a Gentile and not be in it. You
-
may be a Jew and be in it. And what
-
makes the difference
-
and
-
there's a lot of there's applications
-
we're going to make here. Some takeways
-
that I think are great importance.
-
in our modern time. But for now, let's
-
look at verse two.
-
What we're going to be looking at here,
-
what I want you to see is there's a
-
pattern. Was the father of the father of
-
was the father of the father of a little
-
detail of the genealogy. And I want you
-
to see these breaks
-
are worthy of the break.
-
Why is that there? All right. Abraham
-
was the father of Isaac and Isaac the
-
father of Jacob and Jacob the father of
-
Judah and his brothers there's addition
-
and his brothers
-
and Judah the father of
-
Perez and by a woman
-
and the father of
-
Hezron the father of Lam the father of
-
the father of Nan the father and Salmon
-
the father of Boaz by Rahab another
-
woman
-
and Boaz the father of Oed by Ruth
-
another woman and Oed the father of
-
Jessie and Jessie the father of David
-
the king note there and David was the
-
father of Solomon by the wife of not
-
mentioned by name
-
the wife of another
-
David.
-
So one thing I want to mention first of
-
all is Jesse the father of David the
-
king. It's a reminder that's in there to
-
remind you that Jesus is the promise to
-
David kingdom.
-
Now a lot of these people are kings all
-
the following
-
up until Babylon but specifically David
-
the king. Why is David the king
-
mentioned? Because Jesus is the promised
-
son who would sit on David's throne
-
forever and that other than that he
-
by
-
uh Boaz by Rahab of Ruth and Solomon by
-
the wife of I want to look at these and
-
think about what
-
happen so we have this Judah and his
-
brothers
-
Judah
-
The father
-
the father of
-
Boaz the father by
-
the father of David the king the father
-
of my wife ofahhah and Jacob the father
-
of Joseph the husband of Mary of whom
-
Jesus is born
-
is the final woman
-
and Mary was such an woman
-
that she blessed among above all
-
No woman blessed Mary
-
of any woman to ever live to be the
-
woman who brought the son to all
-
nations. So she's our final break in the
-
pattern and we'll talk about that
-
very
-
Judah first of all. Judah and his
-
brothers. He mentioned that that
-
Jacob was the father of Judah and his
-
brothers. Why? Why? What does he want to
-
think about? Well, as we talked about
-
now, maybe a month, month and a half
-
ago, going through Genesis, finishing up
-
the book of Genesis,
-
we were reading in Genesis 49 8-10.
-
Remember, there's a prophecy of Jacob
-
over each of the sons of
-
each of his 12 sons and they came to
-
Judah verse 89
-
your brothers shall praise you refers to
-
praise
-
your brother shall praise you your hand
-
shall be on the neck of your enemies
-
your father's son shall bow down before
-
you
-
is lion
-
from the prey. My son gone up and lion
-
shall not depart from Judah nor the
-
ruler in his feet until tribute comes to
-
him and him shall be the obedience of
-
the people. So Judah has this marvelous
-
messianic prophecy that will come the
-
Messiah who will rule all nations and
-
all nations will bow before him.
-
Christion's
-
reminder that Jacob is the father of
-
Judah and his brothers. Oh, out of all
-
the brothers, one was chosen to bring
-
forth the Messiah
-
who is a father of Christ
-
as the lion of the tribe of Judah. So I
-
believe that's I believe that's the
-
reason Judah is mentioned is a reminder
-
of the promise to first century readers
-
of Judah will come the Messiah who will
-
have a scepter that all the people not
-
just all because again there's a massive
-
theme here of the inclusion of all
-
nations
-
of Matthew and the big I believe in this
-
then we also read that Judah
-
Judah.
-
So where do we read about that back in
-
Genesis 384
-
to 27? Let me give you a little
-
background here. I know I just preached
-
on it last year, but if you remember
-
after Judah,
-
there's a whole chapter dedicated quite
-
a bit of narrative here to Judah and
-
some of the things that he did and one
-
of the things he had already married a
-
womanite
-
woman, but he did aite woman had two
-
sons by them and
-
took a
-
and
-
simply say don't worry
-
in place of his brother
-
if a woman died without children would
-
marry the widow but on didn't want the
-
responsibility
-
of of his brotherly
-
being the father to our son because he
-
knew that that son would be the heir of
-
his dead brother's estate.
-
told his feet on the ground and God him
-
and then he had another son and that son
-
when it came when he came of age you
-
came of age
-
he didn't want to give his youngest son
-
and so he was going to be childless
-
went back to live in her father's house.
-
And one day Judah was on
-
Judah
-
and he gave her money here. I'll give
-
you I'll give you some tokens.
-
I'll come back. I'll pay you for playing
-
nice with you. And he goes, "Okay, wait
-
for you." And he goes back, "Hey,
-
where's the temple?"
-
Well, she's not here. And so we get down
-
to verse 24. It says, "About three
-
months later, Peter was told, your
-
daughter-in-law has been immoral.
-
Moreover, she is pregnant by
-
immorality."
-
And bring her out and let her be so
-
ready to condemn her just
-
as she was being brought out. She sent
-
word to her father-in-law by the man to
-
whom these belong.
-
Then Judah identified them and said she
-
is more righteous than I
-
did not give her to my son Sheila and he
-
did not know her again.
-
So
-
God takes this woman who dressed up like
-
a prostitute. She wanted children so bad
-
like a prostitute
-
relationship with her father-in-law
-
and
-
children by him and
-
God yet again a woman
-
why why is she mention first why would
-
why wouldn't they mention Sarah
-
woman of great faith
-
who being so old and yet she considered
-
her body as
-
she considered God's promise that she
-
would have received. She believed it was
-
going to be
-
or not. Why not why not Rebecca who was
-
so noble that when the servant of of
-
Abraham came she said I'll draw water
-
for you and for your 1000
-
gallons of water
-
she's not
-
or like Leah every time she she was
-
having another baby she would praise the
-
Lord
-
those women are not mentioned who's
-
mentioned first
-
the
-
If Jesus is the Messiah, how come all
-
these prostitutes and tax collectors of
-
which
-
comes
-
don't believe?
-
And he's also demonstrating something
-
else. He's demonstrating
-
hope for the defile.
-
hope for the hope for the nonigus
-
Christ came into the world to save
-
my name.
-
The attitude of the Christian should not
-
be well I'm not as I understand why I
-
got in but I don't know how he could be
-
saved. Our attitude should be if God can
-
save me.
-
That should be our attitude. never have
-
an attitude. You know, we don't have a
-
lot of homeless walk in here that sort
-
of thing. We have a church on
-
we were close to
-
homeless people. We had alcohol
-
in
-
the street
-
and
-
anytime
-
we want to welcome them.
-
We're not going to tell you that it
-
doesn't matter our stand. God demands
-
that we repent.
-
But we hope it says in first
-
such not inherit the kingdom of God, nor
-
idolattors, nor fornicators, nor
-
homosexuals
-
will inherit the kingdom of God. And
-
such were some of you.
-
You were washed. You were sanctified.
-
You were justified. You were righteous
-
by the spirit of our God. God delights
-
in taking
-
the wicked, the sinner, the lowly
-
saving them. And often times he passes
-
over the expert, intellectual, the
-
philosopher,
-
high.
-
All right. Next one. The
-
We saw Salmon the father of Boaz by
-
a few generations later
-
getting a close
-
came from saying go the land especially
-
Jericho
-
and they went came into the house of a
-
prostitute whose name was
-
so versatile
-
and said, "Hey, where are the men?
-
came into your house last night.
-
We're terrified. We know what God did
-
Egyptian
-
and
-
I don't want my family to die.
-
Will you remember me? Because tell you
-
what, our lives are your life. You
-
spared us. We spare you. She let him let
-
him down
-
and they said, "But you got to do this.
-
You got to hang
-
it from your house." The house was built
-
into the wall.
-
When they came to Jericho, they marched
-
around the wall with the exception of
-
the part of the wall. By the way, I very
-
interesting video
-
of Jericho, the walls of Jericho did
-
indeed fall down and one section that
-
did not fall at that time and that would
-
have been whereabitute.
-
She had a high body count. She did it
-
for a living
-
yet.
-
She's she's noted in multiple places
-
including James 2.
-
Now everybody in Jericho, everybody God
-
said you were wipe out everything in
-
Jericho. You're not their clothing,
-
their gold, their silver. Burn it all
-
these people out. They were such a
-
wicked people full of human sacrifice.
-
It was just a very abominable place. And
-
God said you're going to burn
-
everything.
-
And when was in there, he was supposed
-
to burn everything, but he saw some
-
silver. He saw Babylon and he took it
-
and it was
-
so
-
battle, battle, not technology.
-
They lose the battle.
-
If you bring a cursive thing in your
-
house, you're bring
-
They did they
-
by they said
-
they took the
-
particular family and they came down
-
there
-
and
-
burned. So it's very interesting. of
-
Judah who could have been in the family
-
of Christ
-
and Rahab who was under the curse the
-
curse of Jericho her and her household
-
is
-
so you have an Israelite of the tribe of
-
Judah like a branch broken off and a
-
curse is grafted in
-
the family tree of All
-
right. What do we read in the book of
-
Ruth? We read that Boaz who was okay. So
-
Rahab
-
with
-
Boaz. That's his son.
-
And Boaz
-
marries Ruth and has Oed who has David.
-
All right. That's kind of how far off we
-
are. It's like great.
-
Who is Ruth?
-
Ruth. I'll read through the days when
-
the judges ruled there was a famine
-
because of the judgment of God and it
-
was really bad where Jesus would end up
-
being born here
-
and a man of
-
Judah went to the country of Moab
-
and his wife and his two sons. The name
-
of the man was the name of his wife
-
Naomi. And the names of his two sons
-
were
-
they were from Judah. That's where
-
they went to the country of Moab and
-
remained there. Butcabit
-
wives the name of the one and the name
-
of the other.
-
All right. So who are the Moabites?
-
was a
-
lot random and he went and lived in a
-
cave with two daughters and two
-
daughters came to him and said we don't
-
like our father and they got him drunk
-
and one got him drunk and laid with her
-
father one night
-
drunk he didn't know he didn't know
-
anyway pretty disgusting story of incest
-
between Lot and his two daughters the
-
daughter became pregnant and conceived
-
Ammon who became
-
and the other daughter got pregnant and
-
conceived Moab who became the Moabites.
-
So the Moabites and the Ammonites are
-
two tribes that were born of incest from
-
the line of Lot of Abraham.
-
And when Israel came out of Egypt, the
-
Moabites
-
came hired a prophet to come and curs.
-
But later on we're told that this
-
prophet named
-
Israites
-
and the Ammonites God told him he says
-
you're never ever going to interit
-
forever noted.
-
It was illegal. They were the people
-
that must not be married. And yet what
-
happens is is in a time of famine.
-
Naomi and her husband and her sons go
-
down into the land of Moab because
-
there's no there's no bread in
-
Bethlehem, which means house of bread.
-
And so they go over to Moab and they
-
marry these two women.
-
And then under the judgement of God, her
-
husband and her two sons, they all die.
-
And
-
go back to live people. But says, "Where
-
you go, I will
-
be my people. Your God will be my God."
-
Ruth
-
said, "Your God will be my God." She had
-
faith. I want to serve Yahweh. Even
-
though it was an illegal marriage
-
initially, she goes back with Naomi and
-
she meets Boaz. Boaz sees her incredible
-
character, marries her and has Oed
-
and she
-
so far, one dressed up like a prostitute
-
and slept with her father-in-law. The
-
next one was a prostitute for a living.
-
And now we have a God specifically said
-
no and yet God allowed because
-
all right here's the next one mention
-
second. Now we get out of out of
-
further down.
-
David did really well.
-
When there was a lion to fight, he was
-
ready. When there was a bear to fight,
-
he was ready. When there was a giant
-
fight, he was ready. When there was a
-
beautiful woman to sleep with, he was
-
ready.
-
This is where he falls.
-
in regards to his wife's a man after
-
God's own heart but apparently a man
-
also after his wife
-
11 says it happened late one afternoon
-
walking on the roof of the king's house
-
that he saw from the roof the woman
-
bathing and the woman was very beautiful
-
and inquired about the woman and one
-
said is not this the daughter of the
-
wife of your
-
David sent me and took her and she came
-
to him and he lay with her and she had
-
been purifying herself.
-
Then she returned to her house and the
-
woman and she told David I am
-
well
-
of his best
-
of
-
So first he says there's a battle going
-
on
-
it easy
-
on the fly but it was a time when he got
-
the war and David sitting at home
-
instead of being engaged in the war he's
-
sitting on his couch
-
sitting on his couch and uh that's when
-
he falls into
-
uh
-
what does he do he calls
-
Hey,
-
good job.
-
I'm not going to do that. He refused to
-
go home. He was such a noble. He was a
-
nobleite. A noble gentile. Not not an
-
Israelite. Aite, a gentile.
-
And he's more than David by far.
-
Well, David David cannot. David was
-
hoping that would go home and be with
-
his wife and conceive a child or think
-
child. Oh, congratulations on the baby
-
baby boy. Didn't work out that way. God
-
wanted.
-
So later on David goes to Joab.
-
Not just a bunch of people died.
-
Oh, okay. Don't worry about it.
-
But he does make
-
you
-
a year later. comes into
-
not lawful what you do here
-
and
-
David is finally confronted recogniz
-
The child later
-
that's how David
-
God
-
Jebiahus
-
is our
-
adultery
-
draft.
-
Well, I I put here as a reminder to that
-
Jewish reader. God's always been
-
by
-
the Old
-
Jesus Christ.
-
Later on in Matthew 21,
-
we read about the
-
Matthew 2132.
-
When he entered the temple, the chief
-
priest, the elders of the people came up
-
to him as he was teaching and said, "By
-
what authority are you doing these
-
things? And who gave you this
-
authority?" So here they are the chief
-
priest.
-
They're in the temple. The elders the
-
elders also were the rulers of the
-
people by their tribe.
-
And they're asking by what authority
-
I will also ask you one question and I
-
also will tell you by what authority I'm
-
doing the baptism of John and where did
-
it come from heaven or man they
-
discussed it among themselves saying if
-
you will say to us why then did you not
-
believe but we from we are afraid of the
-
crowd. For they all told that John was a
-
prophet. So they answered Jesus, we do
-
not know. And he said to them, neither
-
will I tell you by what authority I do
-
these things.
-
He said listen
-
to market share. They didn't want to
-
lose followers. They didn't want to lose
-
their subscribers.
-
So, look, what what did John the Baptist
-
say?
-
They know what he said. They said, "This
-
is the Messiah. Greater than um and I'm
-
not waiting on
-
that message." It wasn't that the
-
experts didn't have enough information.
-
It's that they had a reason to reject
-
him because they did not want to lose
-
their following. And so, because they
-
had a dishonest question, I tell you
-
what
-
and he went to the first and said work
-
in the vineyard today and he answered I
-
will not
-
change his mind and he went to the other
-
son and said the same and he answered I
-
will sir will
-
father they said the
-
Truly I say to you
-
came to you in the way of righteousness
-
and you did not believe him but the tax
-
collectors and the believed him even
-
when you saw it you did not change your
-
mind
-
I gave the Jews
-
and the people
-
when God shows up.
-
And so that brings the question we are
-
we
-
say I'll follow Jesus anywhere. A lot of
-
people people get baptized
-
faith but afterwards they quit the Bible
-
they quit church
-
they said I'll serve Christ I'll follow
-
Christ
-
don't none go with me so I will follow
-
I
-
came down to it
-
for those who
-
see in Matthew we're going to see many
-
examples of
-
chapter eight we're read
-
Later on, we'll read about how
-
Christ
-
is rejected. It's a major theme of
-
gentile inclusion.
-
Then
-
I want to go to a new
-
Romans 11.
-
There are two
-
God's chosen people because of their
-
ethnicity, their race, their
-
pitfall
-
elect
-
Israel was chosen to be the the country
-
from which the Messiah would come. He
-
would come from Abraham's flesh. He
-
would come from David's line. That's why
-
the genealogy is there. But that's the
-
last genealogy.
-
That's it.
-
The genealogy of Christ the last
-
pitfall
-
and I'm really sick of it. People that
-
want to just talk about the Jews like
-
behind that ever happened and cherry
-
linenwood
-
all run by Jews and uh pornography run
-
by Jews and all the banks is run by Jews
-
and Jews Jews. Okay, so ignore all the
-
Nobel prizes and science and medicine
-
because some important processed by I'm
-
tired of hearing about
-
It's just another way of boasting in
-
your ethnicity because you wouldn't be
-
saying that if you were a Jew, would
-
you?
-
I'm not a Jew. I'm notic
-
by
-
British and Americ
-
that that we do as a people as Americans
-
as a nation. Do you want to be
-
accountable for every war that we've
-
been involved in since World War II?
-
You want to be accountable for that? You
-
want to take ownership of it?
-
Every everybody in the village has been
-
bombed in some way, whether just or
-
unjust. You want to take credit for it?
-
Listen,
-
we should not be boasting our ethnicity.
-
in Christ.
-
You're either in Christ or you're not in
-
Christ. Now you are
-
wise very intelligent people and there's
-
a lot of brilliant genius Jews and some
-
of them are evil geniuses and some of
-
them
-
sense contributed greatly to humanity
-
and some Jews are believers.
-
Christ, right?
-
But in terms of righteousness, what
-
matters? What matters is being in
-
Christ. You are saved by grace, not by
-
race. Nor are you excluded by race. Paul
-
says here in Romans 11, he says, "Now I
-
am speaking to you as much as I am the
-
Gentiles. magnify my ministry in order
-
somehow to make my fellow Jews jealous
-
and thus save some of them for their
-
reject
-
what will acceptance but life
-
on one hand
-
there is no salvation given to men
-
outside of
-
There is no other name under heaven
-
given whereby we must be saved but in
-
Christ. But on the other hand
-
he longs to see the Jews saved in
-
Christ.
-
And that should be all as well because
-
there's plenty of people around every
-
human race is corrupted. But in Christ,
-
What do we have in verse 16? If the
-
dough offered the first fruit, so is the
-
analogy. And if the root is holy, so are
-
the saying, listen, if the starter
-
loss
-
from it is holy. If you're in Christ,
-
you are in him.
-
back to Leviticus 2 and the offering of
-
first fruits that would be offered. If
-
you are Christ from the dead, if you are
-
in Christ, you are holy as he is holy.
-
And then he uses the next analogy. And
-
if the root is holy, so are the
-
branches. The root of the tree, if the
-
root of the tree is holy, then the
-
branches that come from that tree are
-
holy. And that's the illustration of a
-
family tree here. I'm tying it in
-
Matthew although it doesn't mist
-
but if some of the branches were broken
-
off and you although a wild olive were
-
grafted among the others and now the
-
olive tree do not be arroant towards the
-
branches if you are remember it is not
-
you take the root but the roots you've
-
got this olive tree which is a picture
-
of Christ
-
and Some have been broken off Jews. Why?
-
Because they rejected Christ. And some
-
are in Gentiles. Why? Because they put
-
their faith in Christ. They're grafted
-
into the tree. The analogy here is a
-
branch was cut off and a wild branch was
-
grafted in and becomes part of the tree.
-
It has
-
branches off.
-
Jews didn't believe they rejected Jesus
-
until the gospel.
-
That's right. That is true. They were
-
broken off because of their unbelief.
-
But you stand through faith. So do not
-
become fear. For God did not spare the
-
natural branches. Neither did they spare
-
you. Not the kindness of God.
-
But God's kindness to you provided you
-
kindness. Otherwise, you will be cut
-
off.
-
Be very careful. You don't get an
-
antiite attitude in your heading against
-
the branches. You are saved because of
-
your faith in Christ, nothing in
-
yourself. And if you have the same
-
arrogant, unbelieving attitude, you will
-
be broken off. It's only by faith in
-
Christ that we are grafted in that we
-
become part of that royal family. Verse
-
23, and even they do not continue in
-
unbelief will be grafted in. For God has
-
the power to them in again. For if you
-
were cut off Nature by nature olive tree
-
and grafted concrete nature into a
-
cultivated olive tree. How much more
-
will these natural branches be in their
-
own
-
practically speaking?
-
I don't support an ethnicity just
-
because they have an ethnicity.
-
I don't I don't believe God never did
-
say unconditionally support the Jewish
-
people
-
called the Jewish people in the Old
-
Testament.
-
If you love the call to repentance,
-
call them to faith in Christ.
-
But there should be no hatred in the
-
heart of Christian
-
making lots of jokes, making jokes,
-
saying all kinds of things.
-
Yes, there have been Jewish
-
conspiration.
-
You don't have
-
your branch.
-
We thank you, God.
-
Lord, I pray for anyone here tonight.
-
They're still relying on some kind of
-
pride
-
and they're yet to humble themselves.
-
Lord, I pray for them this morning.
-
You would draw them to yourself
-
that you would make them a new creature.
-
I thank you that you welcome
-
sexually immoral
-
violence.
