  1. Good morning.

  2. Usually

  3. when it comes to Christmas time, I have

  4. to take a break from my my myential

  5. preaching to books. So I usually do take

  6. a break because I I love Christmas and I

  7. love to talk about Christmas and the

  8. incarnation of our Lord. I think there's

  9. no need for a break because the next two

  10. weeks we're in Matthew chapter one and

  11. we're going to be talking about the

  12. birth of Christ. And I I believe that

  13. pretty much if I was preaching the

  14. sermon in July, it would probably be the

  15. same because I'm trying to get into the

  16. point of the passage of the point of the

  17. passage and I want the point of the

  18. sermon to reflect the point of the

  19. passage. We're going to be reading in

  20. Matthew chapter one. We're going through

  21. the genealogy one more time. I think

  22. it's the third time we in the genealogy

  23. where there's this this arrangement of

  24. 14 generations. Matthew will point out

  25. that there's 14 generations from Abraham

  26. to David and 14 generations from David

  27. to the land of Babylon and 14.

  28. Why did he do that? And moreover, why

  29. why did he actually manipulate the a

  30. little bit to fix that? because he

  31. actually read a couple people out of the

  32. out of the genealogy in order to

  33. accomplish this and and everybody agrees

  34. commentary he's making a literary point

  35. there's significance in the number 14

  36. what that significance is hardly any

  37. commentators I can find to say I found a

  38. couple explanations which I think are

  39. are reasonable I came to my own

  40. conclusion before I looked at other

  41. people's conclusions And uh I'm going to

  42. give you my honorary mention of another

  43. conclusion of why 14 is mentioned. But I

  44. will sum it up regardless of the meaning

  45. of 14 generations. There is definitely a

  46. point that the birth of Christ

  47. represents a new beginning.

  48. It's time for a major change. There is a

  49. there's been a pattern when after 14

  50. generations after there's a build up and

  51. the promises made to Abraham that that

  52. reaches a pinnacle in the coming of

  53. David and then new promises made to

  54. David above what was made to Abraham

  55. that from him would come the one who

  56. will reign over all the nations in an

  57. everlasting king and then after David

  58. there's a decline there's disappointment

  59. for generations. We read one king after

  60. another who fails to be the promised

  61. king who would reign forever. So it's

  62. disappointment, disappointment, covenant

  63. breaking, oath breaking, sin, murder,

  64. bloodshed. It's a big mess for 14

  65. generations. And then there's a massive

  66. consequence because they broke the

  67. covenant. God says, "I'm going to allow

  68. you to be taken by the Babylonians."

  69. And the throne of David

  70. 14.

  71. And so there's this pattern of 14.

  72. Something really big happens. It's

  73. Matthew is saying we're right on

  74. schedule. Something big happens.

  75. The son of David has come. The prophecy

  76. of Abraham has come. It represents a new

  77. beginning. Now the title is a new

  78. beginning.

  79. The birth of Christ is a new beginning

  80. to relinquish our death, set us free and

  81. give us rest. But also as we look at the

  82. new beginning, when Christ comes into

  83. our lives,

  84. it's a new beginning for us.

  85. Christ came to set us free. Christ came

  86. to give up. Christ came to relinquish

  87. our

  88. shall see Christ to save us from our s

  89. word

  90. as we've seen previous

  91. of Jesus Christ the son of David the son

  92. of Abraham

  93. Abraham was the father of Isaac and

  94. Isaac the father of Jacob Jacob the

  95. father of

  96. Judah, the father of Zer of Perez, the

  97. father of

  98. the father of the father of Andadab, the

  99. father of M.

  100. the father of Salmon,

  101. the father of Boaz by Rahab, and Boaz

  102. the father of Ruth. And God the father

  103. of the father of David.

  104. And David was the father of Solomon by

  105. the wife of Uriah. And Solomon the

  106. father of

  107. the father of Elijah. From Abraham to

  108. David for 14.

  109. And from David to Babylon 14. And from

  110. the deportation to Babylon to Christ 14.

  111. So all the generations

  112. Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place

  113. in this way. When his mother Mary had

  114. been with Pharaoh and Joseph before they

  115. came together, he was found to be the

  116. child of the Holy Spirit. Oh Lord God,

  117. we thank you that you orchestrate

  118. history to tell your story. It is

  119. your story. We thank you Lord that

  120. history

  121. our Lord and Savior. We thank you Lord

  122. that God the Son took on human flesh.

  123. You split history in half a new

  124. beginning

  125. and the year of our Lord. We serve you.

  126. You're our King. You're our Savior.

  127. You're our deliverer. You came to set us

  128. free from our s. You came to give us

  129. hope in an unexpected end. And we praise

  130. you Lord for the goodness and the

  131. graciousness that you sh.

  132. So our last verse here, I'll start with

  133. the last verse of our text and I'll go a

  134. little beyond it in my sermon. Um here

  135. we we we we observed in last week the

  136. very first verse that's the very first

  137. sermon I did in Matthew introduction to

  138. Matthew was just basically the first

  139. verse of Matthew and the last verses of

  140. Matthew 28.

  141. The first verse it speaks of uh the The

  142. book of the generation, the book of the

  143. genealogy, the book of the genesis of

  144. Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son

  145. of Abraham. The word genealogy in Greek

  146. is Genesis. It's it's it's a repeating

  147. phrase in the book of Genesis. Every

  148. genealogy has this word in Greekis in

  149. the Greek translation. And so the very

  150. first verse points out that we have the

  151. book of the genesis of Jesus Christ.

  152. Genesis origins or beginning or when it

  153. speaks of your family line your family

  154. is true. It's your origin. Well, now

  155. here we are in verse 18 where our text

  156. and it says again now the birth of Jesus

  157. Christ took place in this place. What is

  158. the Greek word for birth you might ask?

  159. It's the same word.

  160. So here again we have the phrase now the

  161. genesis of Jesus Christ

  162. the origin the beginning of Jesus took

  163. place in this way. And so the word

  164. Genesis to the Greek reader reading this

  165. to the Hebrew reader who spoke the

  166. written read this and they think to the

  167. book of Genesis. What promises were made

  168. to Adam and Eve the seed of the woman.

  169. What do we see in Matthew? We see the

  170. virgin

  171. that will

  172. see the son of Abraham the promised of

  173. God, the seed of Abraham and whom all

  174. the nations of the earth will be blessed

  175. for the great commission to go to all

  176. the nations teach them this blessing of

  177. the gospel and we see Jesus who is the

  178. son of David the king who rule the

  179. nations of the book of Matthew the king

  180. has come

  181. here and his kingdom is growing in the

  182. hearts and minds of filling the earth as

  183. we make disciples of all men so now we

  184. have this

  185. of Jesus Christ.

  186. Also notice how he conceived. Well,

  187. we're told that Joseph is not the

  188. father. He was the father.

  189. The holy spirit we read in covered over

  190. Mary and she conceived of the Holy

  191. Ghost. Jesus

  192. legal father was Joseph which means

  193. Joseph being a king

  194. of the throne of David. But The actual

  195. father is the Holy Spirit. The Holy

  196. Spirit conceives and Mary

  197. Jesus. Jesus is God the son taking on

  198. human flesh. And so Adam became a living

  199. soul when God formed Adam

  200. from the earth.

  201. God made

  202. Adam from the earth

  203. of the earth. Adam from the earth. And

  204. how did he become a living soul? in him.

  205. Holy Spirit breathed in him the breath

  206. of life and he became a living soul. Now

  207. we see Jesus

  208. Adam the new era the new creation the

  209. Holy Spirit

  210. as the Holy Spirit hovers over the

  211. waters in Genesis 13. The Holy Spirit

  212. hovered over Mary conceived in her born

  213. of the Holy Spirit. God the son becomes

  214. also the son of man become son of God of

  215. man

  216. name that probably next week but I want

  217. to put that

  218. represents a new beginning new beginning

  219. for all of us and we shall see the 14

  220. points to that. So now let's look at our

  221. text again.

  222. We just learned about Matthew

  223. Christ the Messiah. Remember Christ is a

  224. title not a man named

  225. Christ

  226. the anointed one he is the promised king

  227. the promised prophet he's the promised

  228. priest the son of David

  229. is very important I'm not going to read

  230. the whole go through it verse by verse

  231. we've done we've done that pretty much

  232. but assum

  233. As I point out last week, we want to

  234. look at the breaks from the pattern. The

  235. pattern is Abraham

  236. is the father of Isaac. Isaac was the

  237. father of Jacob. So was the father of so

  238. and so. And then once in a while, we

  239. last week, there'll be a break and we'll

  240. add a little detail.

  241. that so and so was born of Rahab and so

  242. and so was born of Ruth and so and so

  243. was born of the wife of Matthew

  244. that the leader would take note of and

  245. say why did he break the well there's

  246. another

  247. verse

  248. the father of David the king now there's

  249. a lot of butific

  250. the son of David the king and Josiah the

  251. father of his brothers at the time

  252. of Babylon. Those are your your three

  253. sections from Adrien to David and then

  254. from David to the turning away.

  255. And when we see this build up one one

  256. author

  257. I was trying to look up you know I came

  258. to my own conclusions and then I thought

  259. I want to find out if anybody else comes

  260. to me because I'm saying that you know I

  261. don't hear everywhere. I I found

  262. differences of opinions and I found one

  263. that had the same opinion as me and I

  264. thought well that's that's the one in my

  265. prayer my searching that that I feel God

  266. will give me that one but you know

  267. you're free to disagree with it but but

  268. this author noted that that um that it's

  269. almost the family line is almost like

  270. from Abraham to David it's going uphill

  271. you start small with Abraham little

  272. humble beginnings with Abraham and

  273. there's this

  274. David

  275. Abraham sits on a throne.

  276. And then there's another great and then

  277. it goes downhill. It goes downhill. It

  278. goes downhill. You got one rotten king

  279. after another. A few good ones sprinkled

  280. in there, but mostly bunch of rotten

  281. kings. And God finally says

  282. violated the covenant so much. I'm going

  283. to judge Israel. He takes them captivity

  284. into the land of

  285. the time of of Jesus.

  286. The sons of David don't have a throne.

  287. The throne is the promise has led to

  288. disappointment. God said, "I will make

  289. one of your sons to sit on a throne

  290. forever." And now there's not even a son

  291. on the throne.

  292. So, so there's this uphill to David

  293. down. And then again,

  294. promises until Christ comes that he will

  295. make prophets. God said that I will make

  296. that he was going to give an everlasting

  297. kingdom to the son of David and the son

  298. of John. All right. Now we get to our

  299. new our new verse here verse 17.

  300. 17 all the generations from Abraham to

  301. David 14.

  302. So his name is counted twice in order to

  303. kind of make this work and a couple

  304. people are left out to make this work

  305. and another

  306. the author Matthew's

  307. 14

  308. and a lot of people don't really comment

  309. on it but Matthew wants his audience to

  310. understand there's some significance in

  311. 14

  312. and Hebrew the letters are numbers kind

  313. of like if we were down a

  314. A = 1 B = 2 = 3 = 4

  315. it's pretty much that's the way they did

  316. numbers originally. They didn't write

  317. numbers as a separate symbol but the

  318. letters

  319. in Hebrew and English

  320. they both equal four. So in in Hebrew

  321. the numbers have

  322. a numerical significance because they

  323. use number two. All right. The number

  324. depending on pronunciation

  325. is spelled no. And if you wanted to

  326. calculate

  327. green and

  328. he has a value of four has a value of

  329. six and again has a value of four. So

  330. you add up four six and four and you end

  331. up with 14.

  332. And so uh some people believe just like

  333. you calculate the number of the beast in

  334. revelation the number of 666

  335. if you calculated the number of David's

  336. name it adds up to 14 and David's name

  337. is mentioned multiple times emp

  338. that is one theory and maybe correct

  339. maybe correct that's very significant

  340. that the original read that

  341. but I I my first thought was had nothing

  342. to do with the value of that son of

  343. David but rather if we divide it up

  344. let's look at it again 17

  345. to 14 generations that's one set of 14

  346. and from David Babylon is 14 generations

  347. that's a second

  348. and From the deportation to Babylon to

  349. the Christ is 14.

  350. You have three

  351. and 14 is made up of two

  352. and I I think it's beyond anybody who

  353. reads in the Bible.

  354. The number seven very clearly has

  355. significance meaning I'm going to show

  356. you that. So we have we have uh

  357. 67

  358. and so there's this pattern of sevenus

  359. you have you have

  360. seven

  361. days

  362. what happens on the seven

  363. God creates

  364. day and the sixth day is the day he

  365. created man on the seventh he and I want

  366. and so the number the principle I

  367. believe is most

  368. and I think what it's really teaching is

  369. that now that Christ has come the

  370. relationship of come

  371. it's a new start I'm going to show you

  372. the foundation of where I get First of

  373. all, let's look at one of the first

  374. mentioned here in Genesis 2. We see that

  375. in the number of the heavens and the

  376. earth will finish

  377. that the heavens and the earth were

  378. finished and all the host of them and on

  379. the seventh day

  380. that he had done

  381. the seventh day. All his work that he

  382. had done. So God blessed the seventh day

  383. and made it holy because on it God

  384. rested from all his work that he had

  385. done in creation. These are the

  386. generations that

  387. the word

  388. of the heavens and the earth and they

  389. were created in the day that the Lord

  390. God had made the earth and the same word

  391. here

  392. but here

  393. we have

  394. six

  395. of generations.

  396. We have we have 14 generations

  397. 147.

  398. What would follow the rest

  399. of the first

  400. and as a result

  401. of we all inherit the sin of Adam and we

  402. sire

  403. and under the law Israel tried to keep

  404. the covenant. We see that God makes the

  405. covenant with Abraham and God This is

  406. how you shall keep the covenant became

  407. Israel keep the covenant no like Adam

  408. they break the covenant they fall into

  409. infidelity they fall into idolatry they

  410. fall into adultery they start committing

  411. human sacrifice

  412. human sacrifice and so the old covenant

  413. shows the failure of biological Israel

  414. to keep the covenant

  415. But what we'll see here in the book of

  416. Matthew is the new Israel. He is the

  417. promise of Abraham. And whereas Adam,

  418. Christa

  419. Israel failed, Christ prevailed. He'll

  420. make a very clear point of this in

  421. that Jesus is being compared to

  422. Egypt.

  423. But Jesus keeps the covenant.

  424. We've all broken the covenant. We all s

  425. if you're laboring under the law trying

  426. to earn God's favor, then every morning

  427. you wake up feeling guilty because you

  428. broken that covenant of works that God

  429. made out. God tells Adam and

  430. you continue

  431. from the family of

  432. inheritance is restored.

  433. When we rest in Christ, when we trust in

  434. him,

  435. our deaths are relished. Our sins are

  436. forgiven. It's a new beginning. It's a

  437. new start. It's a fresh start.

  438. See, the Sabbath day was given as a

  439. reminder that God was there.

  440. God had come to redeem him, make his

  441. people. I want to look at the fourth

  442. commandment.

  443. different

  444. days to keep it holy as Yahweh your God.

  445. Six days you shall labor and do all your

  446. work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath

  447. to Yahweh your God. On it you shall not

  448. do any work. You or your son or your

  449. daughter or your male servant or your

  450. female servant or your offer your donkey

  451. or any of your

  452. or the owner who is within your male

  453. servant and your female servants may

  454. rest as well as you.

  455. You shall remember that you were a slave

  456. in the land of Egypt. And Yahweh your

  457. God brought you out from there with a

  458. mighty hand out. Therefore Yahweh your

  459. God commanded you to keep or guard the

  460. Sabbath day. And people look at the

  461. Sabbath like ohad.

  462. Church was made up of a lot of slaves.

  463. If you were a Roman slave and you went

  464. to your master and you said, "Hey, you

  465. know, I've decided I'm going to keep the

  466. fourth commandment. I'm not going to

  467. work." What would happen? You

  468. might get

  469. the

  470. church

  471. full of Romans that they have to keep

  472. the Sabbath

  473. all wrong, folks. The Sabbath was the

  474. great privilege of injury. It was

  475. incredible privilege. It was God saying,

  476. "I want you to work six days, but on the

  477. seventh day, I want you to see forth."

  478. The word

  479. is associated with the word in Hebrew.

  480. Hebrew, you see there's a lot of

  481. connections. the word

  482. I'll say I'll change

  483. the word

  484. and

  485. the word

  486. they're all they're all like the same

  487. word in the word to be when you've eaten

  488. you're full you're you're full it's a

  489. number of perfection it's a number of

  490. completion it's a it's a number of

  491. fulfillment and it's also it's also the

  492. word to keep and tied into the word this

  493. word. So the number seven

  494. and the word complete and the word oath

  495. a vow you make you make your covenant

  496. complete with a with an oath with a same

  497. word as seven.

  498. We talked about it when we talked about

  499. the well of the earth

  500. where Abraham made her. So this word

  501. Sabbath is a really big word but it was

  502. a privilege. It was God saying you know

  503. the rest of the world live in fear and

  504. starvation but that's not the way it's

  505. going to be for my people. I'm going to

  506. bless you in Jesus. It's going to take

  507. pain because your fear will make you

  508. say, "Oh, I have to I have to go to the

  509. law on Sunday because otherwise I won't

  510. have time to go do whatever I want to do

  511. on Saturday and I won't be ready for the

  512. weekend. I have to work on tomorrow's

  513. work for Monday and I have to do this. I

  514. have to do that." And fear hold

  515. people are stressed. Even in America

  516. today, people are stressed and they

  517. think it's privilege to set aside the

  518. Sabbath. The Sabbath was originally

  519. given to John's people saying, "I will

  520. provide for you and I will bless you. I

  521. will meet your economic needs and it's

  522. going to be a break for you, for your

  523. cattle, for your children, and even your

  524. servants, your slaves, your daughters.

  525. Everything's going to shut down and

  526. you're going to run and I'm going to

  527. provide for you. And when you do it,

  528. you're going to remember something.

  529. You're going to remember that you were

  530. slain in the land of Egypt. You were

  531. slain. You have the option to take off

  532. one day.

  533. But now God has brought you out. He's

  534. redeemed you. And that's why I want you

  535. to keep God people to be able to rest.

  536. Now that faith be God's God's going to

  537. make God's gonna more abundantly bless

  538. your harvest than if you

  539. God's going to bless your finances.

  540. God's going to bless you. And what would

  541. it do to the people of Israel? one day

  542. for even the farmer to sit back and read

  543. the word of God, go to synagogue,

  544. rebuild their faith. It's a privilege.

  545. It's necessary to have a sensation from

  546. the daytoday

  547. to focus on higher things, the things of

  548. God to spend time with your family.

  549. It was a blessing to them and and

  550. honestly, yes, you have to

  551. level obligation. Well, no. But I want

  552. to tell you, rediscover

  553. it. Rediscover for your own make the

  554. Lord's day, which I would make the case

  555. that the first day of the week is the

  556. new the new day of rest. Christ from the

  557. grave on the first day of the week and

  558. he brings in the new creation, the new

  559. Genesis on the first day of the week.

  560. rest on the seventh day. But but what is

  561. trusting in Christ but resting in his

  562. work for the

  563. Christ obeyed the law? Christ was born

  564. under the law. When we place our faith

  565. in him, we're saying I'm going to rest

  566. and

  567. we enter into his

  568. paid

  569. work. I'm going to him. Now, I still

  570. want to obey him and I want to live for

  571. him and I want to be an obedient son,

  572. but I'm not trying earned my salvation.

  573. Christ already earned my salvation. I

  574. rest in his work. He finished it on the

  575. cross. It is finished. When I trust in

  576. Christ, I am Christ to fulfill the law.

  577. So the Sabbath

  578. also

  579. not only

  580. there was a Sabbath of years

  581. a

  582. Deuteronomy

  583. 15. lay the foundation to explain the 14

  584. verse one at the end of every seven

  585. years. to make it clear it's after six

  586. years

  587. at the end of every seven years you

  588. shall grant a relief and this is a man

  589. of release every predator shall release

  590. what he has to his neighbor he shall not

  591. exact of his neighbor his brother

  592. because the Lord's relief has been

  593. proclaimed of a foreigner you may exact

  594. it but whatever of yours is with your

  595. brother your hand shall release okay so

  596. in Israel you could have a debt you

  597. could you could loan your brother that

  598. for up to six years if you did it in the

  599. first year. If you did it in the fifth

  600. year, you only have two years to go

  601. because the whole nation understood

  602. every seventh year is a year of release.

  603. They didn't have

  604. 30

  605. years

  606. and Israel every seventh year is the

  607. year of

  608. So if you were going to loan somebody,

  609. you loan them sufficient amount of money

  610. to get to get the food that they needed

  611. to

  612. dig the wells for and the money would

  613. not exceed what you would expect to get

  614. back by the end of the seven years

  615. because you knew that in the seventh

  616. year was the year of freedom. The debts

  617. were forgiven.

  618. And then every 49 years, anybody who

  619. would sold their land, they could sell

  620. it for up to 49 years, they would blow

  621. the trumpet and everybody to go home. I

  622. think that's a picture again.

  623. sold

  624. the

  625. he was kicked out of the garden

  626. and now in Christ we get to go back

  627. we get to Christ has declared our

  628. release and we get to return but there

  629. is a period of every seventh year of

  630. release all right he goes on but there

  631. will be no among you for Yahweh will

  632. bless you in the land that Yahweh your

  633. God is giving you inheritance.

  634. If only you will obey the voice of

  635. Yahweh your God, be careful and do all

  636. this commandment that I command you

  637. today. For Yahweh your God will bless

  638. you as he promised you and you shall

  639. many nations but you shall not borrow

  640. and you shall rule over many nations but

  641. they shall not rule over you. Say you

  642. know you say wellism

  643. I would say capitalism

  644. with what the teaches but there's an

  645. element here for Israel that wasn't what

  646. we call and it was built into the

  647. society of Israel with a year of relief

  648. and it wasn't it wasn't governed by the

  649. state really

  650. but but this idea that you don't have

  651. this ongoing debt bigger and bigger and

  652. bigger until all of a sudden

  653. everybody's left without You have boom

  654. and bust economies for many generations.

  655. That's what making a currency out of

  656. thin airs to Israel based gold and

  657. silver based currency was always backed

  658. by real something real that was

  659. divisible and transportable and

  660. nonritable

  661. value. It was a honest currency by by

  662. weight. But there's this idea that you

  663. know after so many years you

  664. release everybody start

  665. because in the year of release everybody

  666. every

  667. everybody gets their family.

  668. It was a new beginning. It was a new

  669. start. It was a year of joy. It was a

  670. year of my debt is gone. I'm released.

  671. and God says multiple times in the text,

  672. I will bless you if you will do this.

  673. One thing that is scary about

  674. our capitalist economy is you do have a

  675. situation where you you end up with

  676. people who have lots of creditors, lots

  677. of people on credit cards and and you

  678. have people billions of dollars.

  679. The population has more wealth than

  680. everybody else combined, you know. Um,

  681. and that wouldn't have been the way it

  682. was in. And yet the government wasn't

  683. taking some people and redistributing

  684. it, but but it was designed to keep them

  685. out of slavery and bondage. So if you're

  686. going to make a loan, you made it short

  687. and they want they want a debt today.

  688. Everybody wants to enjoy they want to

  689. enjoy in the present atense of their

  690. future. God didn't want people to do

  691. God.

  692. And so you have this program where you

  693. release and they would be presented. God

  694. says I will do and and what does he say?

  695. If you will uh you will many nations

  696. that you will not borrow and you shall

  697. rule over many nations but they shall

  698. not rule over you if you obey.

  699. He's basically saying you'll be free and

  700. you'll be wealthy and you'll be blessed

  701. and you'll be happy and your trust will

  702. be in God. You're not living me for

  703. material things. You're living for the

  704. Lord and you're trusting the Lord and

  705. he's blessing you. God wanted people to

  706. be a free people. And so he built into

  707. the society a year of a year after seven

  708. years a year of

  709. one of your brothers and become poor.

  710. Now notice he said a minute ago

  711. there will be no poor among you. And now

  712. he says if among you one of your

  713. brothers can become poor and how do you

  714. recon

  715. what he's saying is you're not going to

  716. have perpetual poverty

  717. you're going to have mother daughter

  718. daughter sonovery

  719. poverty will happen temporarily

  720. somebody's building burns down and all

  721. their food was in

  722. and they go to their brother and say,

  723. "Brother, I need some money. I need some

  724. food so I can rebuild like I'll loan it

  725. to you." And then again, this idea of

  726. multigenerational poverty where people

  727. only generations of being on a

  728. somewhere, but that wasn't God's intent.

  729. God's intent was people would freely

  730. give up. They would help each other out.

  731. And so you would have

  732. which is an opportunity for the body of

  733. Christ to gather around that person and

  734. say, "We're going to be there for you,

  735. brother." It's a blessing actually

  736. when when somebody needs help and we

  737. have a work day around here. Somebody

  738. moved into their house or somebody has a

  739. day moving and we show up together and

  740. we help each other like the

  741. barn. The community is made stronger by

  742. that act of charity and service. It's so

  743. easy. It's not your own to somebody

  744. else. If you work a government agency

  745. and you're just writing checks and hand

  746. to people, it's not your money. It

  747. doesn't mean anything. But when brothers

  748. and sisters see a need in the body, they

  749. come together and they help each other

  750. out. It glorifies God. It builds up the

  751. body. It builds up your God, I'll bless

  752. you for it. That was God's plan. So

  753. there there's always going to be people

  754. that break a leg and come around and

  755. give them a hand up.

  756. There's always going to be times where

  757. it actually is a good thing. It gives us

  758. an opportunity to demonstrate love and

  759. God didn't want

  760. multigenerational poverty. You know, up

  761. until up until around the founding of

  762. America, there was

  763. Europe and Africa and Asia, everywhere,

  764. you had you had people that many many

  765. generations fathers slaves

  766. just

  767. after another call, call them a slave.

  768. Under communism, the people were in one

  769. sense. They didn't have the freedom to

  770. get up and they wanted to

  771. the government was totally lording over

  772. them like the savior.

  773. God didn't want his people that kind of

  774. multigenerational

  775. slavery, multigenerational poverty. God

  776. saying to Israel, you're going to be a

  777. free people. And part of what's going to

  778. accomplish that is the year of the

  779. seventh year will be a year of verse

  780. seven among you one of your brothers to

  781. become poor in any of your towns within

  782. your land that the Lord your God is

  783. giving you

  784. your heart or set your hand against your

  785. poor brother but you shall open your

  786. hand to him and sufficient for his need

  787. whatever it may be take care that there

  788. be an unworthy thought in your heart and

  789. you say the seventh year the release is

  790. near and I look

  791. your poor brother and you give him

  792. nothing and he lied to the Lord against

  793. you and you'd be guilty of sin. What you

  794. say?

  795. And you're like, man, I don't even got

  796. six months to pay him back. I don't

  797. think I'll get my money back. That's

  798. that's an easy way to look at. He says,

  799. "Even though you're released

  800. had some major medical bills as if he if

  801. he could borrow from the church

  802. $7,000 or so

  803. done by faith just take it

  804. years

  805. back

  806. and it was causing conflict people were

  807. all upset about it people about it and

  808. got together and said, "You know what?"

  809. And up to that point, I was a pastor.

  810. I've been a pastor.

  811. And we're failing it for seven years.

  812. The amount of money that came into the

  813. church was the same amount of money

  814. Not

  815. year after year we had a savings account

  816. down down

  817. and every month

  818. on Monday night and next Sunday The bers

  819. and the bers brought two other families

  820. and our financial

  821. everything all the financial changing

  822. and pour outless

  823. soful.

  824. That was a blesscc

  825. and it was just such an obvious answer

  826. to prayers but obedience

  827. didn't make sense to natur

  828. It's beautiful. All right. Verse 10. He

  829. says, "You shall give to him freely and

  830. your heart shall not do it when you give

  831. to him because this the Lord your God

  832. will bless you in all your works and all

  833. you underake. For they will never cease

  834. to be poor. Therefore, I command

  835. your brother."

  836. God God commanded charity and and uh God

  837. you always have opportunity but God but

  838. charity.

  839. Socialism will never God's blessing

  840. like like

  841. notice there's nowhere to say the

  842. statement

  843. this commandment was to be governed by

  844. the heart of God's people

  845. were to show and show love and they

  846. didn't say I'm going to bring

  847. consequences on you but if you obey I'll

  848. bring blessings upon you all from God

  849. with a generous liberal heart God wants

  850. people

  851. liberal people

  852. about it because

  853. a fearful disposition by faith that God

  854. if your brother a Hebrew man or a Hebrew

  855. woman is saved to you shall serve you

  856. six

  857. you buy a brother out of slavery, he

  858. shall serve you for six years. And in

  859. the seventh year, you shall let him go

  860. free.

  861. When you let him go from you, you shall

  862. not let him go empty-handedly. You shall

  863. punish him literally out of your flock,

  864. out of your wine. As the Lord your God

  865. has blessed you, you shall give him you

  866. shall remember that you were a slave in

  867. the land of Egypt and the Lord your God

  868. you command this day. There's a lot of

  869. talk about child slavery in the Bible

  870. and all that, but when you look at what

  871. slavery was for a Hebrew, if you were a

  872. Hebrew Hebrew, you can look at it as an

  873. education. Let's say you didn't have a

  874. place to live.

  875. You learn the seventh year from your

  876. slavery and you're sent out with

  877. this is a replacement to college.

  878. This is all kinds of social functions

  879. that we have. But God says you're in the

  880. sun and you're to send them out with the

  881. blessing.

  882. as I want to get to Matthew. I think

  883. that's important because Jesus came

  884. after a Sabbath of generation after six

  885. days

  886. six

  887. to bring in the final rest.

  888. And he doesn't just

  889. he doesn't just forgive us and give us

  890. hell anymore. We're made sons and

  891. daughters of the king.

  892. Now you that's the point of the passage

  893. that come up in Matthew somewhere else.

  894. Um I mentioned this some weeks ago. I'm

  895. read it again when I was when I was

  896. Joseph forgiving his brother I read from

  897. this text in Matthew 18 came up and said

  898. to him Lord how often will my brother

  899. against me and I forgive him as many as

  900. seven times and Jesus said to him I do

  901. not say to you seven times but

  902. 77

  903. to him and Lord how shall my brother

  904. against me and I forgive

  905. not

  906. I think this is very

  907. when they went into the land for 490

  908. years they didn't

  909. do it for 490 years they didn't practice

  910. Deuteronomy like David they weren't

  911. practicing Deuteronomy 15 They didn't

  912. have a year anymore

  913. old

  914. anymore. And so God said in Jeremiah's

  915. day, he said, "Okay, then the land's

  916. going to have 70 years

  917. because you have not kept the

  918. ground and you didn't

  919. say I'm going to take you into

  920. to the carrying away. But God

  921. demonstrated his patience for 490 years

  922. while they set aside this principle of

  923. the year of release. You owe me seven

  924. years.

  925. You never you never

  926. let the rest have

  927. and so when Peter says

  928. to my brother Seven

  929. minutes.

  930. so patient with

  931. you know that's encouragement to me when

  932. I sit

  933. as I go to the Lord you know this way

  934. again

  935. whatever whatever it is and

  936. it's God doesn't

  937. go against

  938. we go to the Lord and we say I do it

  939. again. God, I failed again.

  940. But it's this pattern of seven concept

  941. of rest is built into

  942. Christ.

  943. A new a new beginning has begun in

  944. Christ. And so we read 14 generations

  945. from Abraham to David 14.

  946. Jesus came to your sins. set free. He

  947. came to give me the blessing. He came to

  948. give you a gift. He doesn't respond to

  949. Israel something he wasn't willing to

  950. give. Jesus has come to be our Sabbath

  951. left.

  952. So let's go back to Matthew.

  953. Here's where we pick up now and we'll

  954. pick up more next week. Now the birth

  955. that is now the

  956. of the new beginning. The beginning of

  957. Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  958. When his mother Mary had been betrayed

  959. to Joseph, before they came together,

  960. she was bound to be a child from the

  961. Holy Spirit.

  962. And her husband Joseph being a just man

  963. and willing to put her resolved to

  964. divorce her quietly.

  965. As you consider these things, behold, an

  966. angel of the Lord appeared to him in his

  967. dream, saying, Joseph, son of David, do

  968. not fear to take Mary as your wife, for

  969. that which is conceived in her is from

  970. the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son,

  971. and he shall call his name Jesus, for he

  972. will save his people from their

  973. Jesus

  974. salvation. Jehovah save your salvation

  975. salvation continue to save us from our

  976. continue to restore us to our

  977. inheritance

  978. continue to make us sons and daughters.

  979. Those that place their faith in Jesus

  980. are resting in Jesus and his finished

  981. work. Jesus kept the law. He did not

  982. keep the law. He earned what we paid the

  983. debt that he did not owe. We owed debt

  984. we could not pay. Jesus came and paid

  985. the debt so that we could be redeemed.

  986. So that we could rest in him. So that we

  987. could be set free. And he does it with a

  988. blessing. He came to bless us.

  989. Not only are we set free in this new

  990. beginning, but a debt is forgiven and we

  991. become sons and daughters. I wonder as I

  992. come to these conclusions if it's

  993. possible that the Apostle Paul maybe had

  994. this passage in mind perhaps he doesn't

  995. quote it so maybe that' be a stretch but

  996. in Matthew one we have this this

  997. beautiful ending where where we are

  998. right now where where Mary has given

  999. birth to the savior of the world

1000. remember I pointed out that was given

1001. the promise that the woman

1002. Mary the book of promise was made. Now

1003. in the New Genesis, Mary

  1004. of the Holy Spirit

  1005. and Yeshua,

  1006. salvation is born

  1007. of

  1008. the forgiveness of si

1009. forgive us our sins. Okay, now this is

1010. my final passage here. Galatians 4,

1011. Paul says, I mean the there as long as

1012. he was a child was no different from the

1013. slaves. Though he is the owner of

1014. everything, but he was under guardians

1015. and managers until the day set by his

1016. father. Now he's given the illustration

1017. of a child that he's being raised in a

1018. very rich household and he has guardian.

1019. He really doesn't look any different

1020. than a slave, right? He has to obey the

1021. school after just like the school. But

1022. in fact, he's actually the long child,

1023. he lives just like a slave. Israel lives

  1024. like a slave.

1025. They say that he is under

1026. the date set by his father. In other

1027. words, when he becomes the heir of the

1028. family estate or when he becomes an

  1029. owner operator.

1030. In the same way also we also when we

1031. were children were enslaved to the

1032. elementary principles of the world. But

1033. when the fullness of time had come

1034. forth his son born of a woman

1035. born under the law under the old

1036. covenant to redeem those who were under

1037. the law so that we might receive

1038. adoption as sons. And because you are

1039. sons, God has sent the spirit of his son

1040. into our hearts from aba father. So we

1041. are no longer a slave but a son and it's

  1042. a son to an

  1043. over

  1044. the law.

1045. We're trying to earn God's approval and

1046. we tell ourselves I think maybe I'm good

1047. enough to go to heaven. Maybe not. We're

1048. like slaves. We're like slaves to the

1049. law. But when the day when the child

1050. born into the household like a slave

1051. until the day that when he like no son

  1052. you're not you're not under a tutor

1053. anymore. Now you are you are an air of

1054. state. In the same way when we come to

1055. faith in Christ and we rest in his

1056. finished work on the cross and we trust

1057. in what he did for us. We're no longer

1058. slaves. We are sons and daughters.

1059. And so this new beginning that we have,

  1060. you're s you're a fornicator. You got an

1061. endure problem. You got a lust problem.

  1062. You're disrespectful. You're

  1063. self-filling. You're selfish. You're

1064. arrogant. All these things can be said

1065. about you and they're true. But when you

1066. come to faith in Christ, what Christ did

  1067. for you is accur.

  1068. It's a new beginning.

  1069. It's a new start.

1070. This teaching goes back well actually

1071. goes back further than that but very

  1072. popular among the westification

  1073. perfectionism

  1074. becomes

  1075. early

1076. and I've known Christians and I was to

  1077. believe it

  1078. somebody

  1079. from

1080. the second best thing about heaven. Best

  1081. thing about

  1082. anymore, God, I'm sorry. I don't repent

1083. to my brothers and sisters and my wife

1084. anymore. I'm tired of repenting, right?

1085. I long for the day I'll be in heaven. I

1086. s ever again. Oh, glorious day.

1087. But anyway, I read this. I have this

  1088. experience and I don't anymore

  1089. good to those

  1090. that good gift.

1091. I got down on my knees. I was ready to

  1092. pray. God, I don't want I don't care

1093. what you do with me. I don't want to

1094. ever sin anyone ever wonderful. I want

1095. to get that to be instantly delivered. I

1096. got down on my knees and scripture

  1097. started

  1098. deliverify

1099. the flesh to walk in the spirit daily.

1100. There's no automatic getting back.

1101. As long as you're in this body until you

1102. see him face to face, we're going to

1103. wrestle with sin. And one of the great

1104. things that these perfectionists wrestle

1105. with is is they're very very critical

1106. and unless you're very selfrighteous

1107. because if you think that you're living,

1108. I guarantee you you're not. You see,

1109. okay, maybe maybe you're not anymore.

1110. You're not living anymore. Good for you.

1111. That's great. Those are good. not do but

1112. but I tell you pride

1113. God is the proud heart

  1114. reality is of heaven

1115. we're going to wrestle with and our

  1116. heart should smus

  1117. Jesus osus

1118. all we are without sin

1119. and he died on the cross and he said the

1120. which means not just but paid in full

1121. what he's saying is their paid

1122. him we're saying I'm going to trust in

1123. what he did I am not going to trust in

1124. what I did and the doctrine of

  1125. perfection

1126. is because you trusting in you

1127. and you will live in bondage in slavery

1128. if you live that way or you will live

1129. selfrighteous and puffed up like the

1130. temple and Lord I thank you I am all

  1131. I

1132. have three days a week and then the poor

  1133. public

1134. merciful to me And Jesus says the tax

1135. collector who went homeified in the city

1136. went home damn and the public went home

1137. justified because he looked at Christ as

  1138. the fulfillment of his

  1139. trust in Christ

1140. in Christ. Trust in him in what he has

1141. done. He's coming to give you a new

  1142. beginning.

1143. Continue to fight. Continue to

1144. s continue to walk in the spirit. But

1145. don't do it to earn a merit badge to

1146. the works of the law. The law is a

1147. beautiful thing and it does bring

1148. freedom in many ways, but not as it

1149. pertains to being right with God. That's

1150. bondage. I love the law of God. I love

1151. to study the law of God. I love how it

  1152. applies to every

1153. such wisdom of the law. I love the law.

1154. That's why I keep the Sabbath on I would

1155. urge you to the but not so that you can

1156. be justified so that you don't live out

1157. in bondage all the time.

  1158. It's a blessing if you don't see it as a

1159. blessing that I always tell you.

  1160. But don't don't

1161. earn God's favor. Don't get baptized to

1162. put a letter set another

1163. don't come to church to earn your way to

  1164. heaven. That just

  1165. more damnation.

1166. We take communion every Sunday.

1167. It's a reminder. This body is for you.

1168. This blood is for you. This is the blood

1169. of the new covenant. It was a new

1170. beginning by Jesus Christ. A new genesis

1171. for each and every one of us. When we

1172. rest in him, we're justified.

  1173. Every

  1174. We have rest.

1175. Father God, we thank you Lord that you

1176. came to relinquish our death. More than

1177. that, you sent us out with a blessing.

1178. But more than that, you gave us the Holy

1179. Spirit whereby we cry, "Aba, Father,

1180. we are coairs of Christ." Lord, we long

1181. for the day when we will sin no more. We

1182. long for the day. We won't have to

1183. mortify the flesh. There will no longer

1184. be falling into sin and pride and

1185. arrogance and greed and selfenteredness.

1186. Just naturally we love you with

1187. everything that we're done. Heart, soul,

1188. mind, and strength and we just naturally

1189. love our neighbor as ourselves. God,

  1190. give us the full

1191. change, oh Lord, by your holy spirit.

1192. Father, we don't want to si

  1193. God

1194. to walk in your spirit and holiness

1195. and love one another in humility.

  1196. We have shown you

1197. the Lord require you to

  1198. mercy

  1199. on the living.
