  1. We finally made it to Matthew chapter 2

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  2. from Matthew. And in this passage, we

  3. see the wise men coming to worship Jesus

  4. and bring him gifts. It's interesting

  5. that we're landing in all this right in

  6. the Christmas season, New Year. And up

  7. to this point, we see a train of thought

  8. as we look at Matthew chapter one

  9. through the eyes of a Jew who's asking

  10. the question, Jesus set the criteria

  11. for Messiah.

  12. And he's the Messiah that we should be

  13. expecting. There's a a Jewish audience

  14. in mind for Matthew the first century.

  15. So in the book of Matthew, he quotes a

  16. lot of Old Testament passages and we'll

  17. see that here in Matthew chapter 2 that

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  18. there's Old Testament prophets that are

  19. quoted and there's things alluded to.

  20. What we see in chapter one, first of

  21. all, our first sermon, we talked about

  22. Jesus is the promised Abraham was told

  23. that in him all the nations of the earth

  24. will be blessed. What do we see in

  25. Matthew chapter 2? We see wise men

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  26. coming from other nations coming from as

  27. far and and there's this message of

  28. gentile inclusion. We saw even in the

  29. family tree of Christ that certain women

  30. are mentioned who several of them are

  31. Gentiles and they're grafted into the

  32. tree of Christ which is a bit of

  33. surprise to the Jewish reader that oh

  34. this is actually part of God's plan that

  35. in Christ all the nations are going to

  36. be blessed and Gentiles are going to be

  37. grafted into the family tree. We also

  38. saw that he is the promise kept to David

  39. that David was told that one of his uh

  40. that his that he would have a son who

  41. would have an everlasting kingdom and

  42. Jesus fits the bill. He comes from the

  43. right family. That's why we have a

  44. genealogy. He is the promised king who

  45. was to come, the king of kings and the

  46. lord of lords. And now what are the wise

  47. men coming to do? They're coming to

  48. worship the newborn king, King Jesus.

  49. And uh we saw him also as the one in

  50. whom we have running, the remission of

  51. sins, the forgiveness of our debt, the

  52. God of man. He is both God and man. And

  53. in this chapter also we will see the

  54. wise men

  55. bowing to worship Jesus. Now no one is

  56. to worship any creature of God. But

  57. Jesus isn't merely a preacher of God. He

  58. is the God man. He receives worship

  59. throughout the book of Matthew. Multiple

  60. times Jesus will receive worship which

  61. would be unlawful to do but for the fact

  62. that he is more than him. He is the God

  63. man which is what we talked about last

  64. week in the incarnation. Now this

  65. morning I thought this wise man savior

  66. and the point is that Danielside

  67. becoming his king Jesus kings fear him

  68. and wise men seek him. In in this

  69. chapter, we will see the wise men go to

  70. the logical place. They go to Jerusalem.

  71. And what is the response of Jerusalem?

  72. They're troubled. They are fearful. Why?

  73. Because King Jesus is a threat to

  74. existing power structure.

  75. He's a threat. He is still a threat.

  76. This is why Christianity must not be

  77. tolerated and must be persecuted by all

  78. totalitarian regimes

  79. because Christ demands loyalty. He

  80. demands the obedience of the nations.

  81. And so when Christians proclaim the full

  82. scope of the authority of Jesus Christ,

  83. it is a threat to existing power

  84. structure. Caesar must persecute

  85. Christians because he cannot maintain an

  86. empire of order where he is the center

  87. of the world and Jesus is the center of

  88. the world.

  89. No must persecute Christians because

  90. Christianity is a threat to Rome. It's

  91. also been a threat to atheistic

  92. communism. It's a threat to Islam. It's

  93. a threat today in countries like

  94. communist China. It's a threat in

  95. Myanmar. It's a threat anywhere where

  96. they deny the authority of Jesus Christ.

  97. It is a threat. And I dare say that it's

  98. a threat here as well. The systems have

  99. bought into this idea of secularism.

  100. Secularism is not a biblical concept. In

  101. fact, the first commandment for this

  102. secularism,

  103. the first commandment, you shall have no

  104. other gods before me, is a declaration

  105. that God is the source of ethics for

  106. morality, crime and punishment, right

  107. and wrong. He is our authority

  108. and secularism and the authority of

  109. Christ cannot equally coexist with what

  110. we put.

  111. Our founders in the United States

  112. recognized on paper that Jesus is the

  113. sovereign judge of all the earth and

  114. they appealed to him for the justice of

  115. their father. They said that rights come

  116. from God. They said we hold these things

  117. to be self-evident that all men are

  118. created equal. Atheists can't say that

  119. and are endowed by your creator with

  120. inaliable rights life

  121. aka properties. concept is God has said

  122. it's wrong to steal and therefore

  123. socialism is also famous

  124. that that God created man in his own

  125. image. All men all ethnicities all

  126. colors of skin are created in God's

  127. image. That means all men have value and

  128. worth in that sense equal before God not

  129. equally talented equally beautiful

  130. equally wealthy equal under the law of

  131. Christ.

  132. This is a concept that has existed in

  133. Christianity and you hear it in the term

  134. Christendom

  135. for millennia Christian spoke of

  136. Christendom. What is Christendom? Well,

  137. it's short for Christ kingdom. There was

  138. a knowledge that kings must tremble

  139. before him. I heard that when handle

  140. messiah

  141. was being played that the king uh the

  142. king who was there present he had to

  143. respond and worship because recognize

  144. there's a king greater than himself.

  145. That should be the response of kings

  146. everywhere to bow before the king of

  147. kings and the lord of lords to proclaim

  148. his sovereignty to acknowledge his

  149. authority

  150. for by him king.

  151. Daniel prophesied the timeline in which

  152. king Jesus would come. He prophesied

  153. and and uh he he laid it out. We're

  154. going to this morning and there were a

  155. group of wise men that received this

  156. prophecy and I believe they've been

  157. waiting they've been waiting for 400

  158. years and they see step by step the

  159. prophecy of Daniel taking place

  160. and now appears the nature of which can

  161. be debated a bit but as far as appear

  162. they out to these wise men it's the

  163. right time and there's the

  164. And the

  165. other books would have given us.

  166. Now if you were standing,

  167. where is he who has been born king of

  168. the Jews? For he saw his star when it

  169. rose and had come to worship him. When

  170. Herod the king heard this, he was

  171. troubled. And all Jerusalem with him and

  172. assembling all the chief priests and

  173. scribes of the people, he inquired of

  174. them where the Christ was to be born.

  175. They told him Bethlehem of Judea. For so

  176. it is written by the prophet, "And you,

  177. oh Bethlehem, and the land of Judah are

  178. no least among the rulers of Judah. For

  179. from you shall come a shepherd my people

  180. Israel. Then Herod summoned the wise men

  181. secretly announc

  182. the star had appeared. And he sent them

  183. to Bethlehem saying go and search

  184. diligently for the child. And when you

  185. have found him bring you word that I too

  186. may come and worship him. And listening

  187. to the king, they went on their way. And

  188. behold, the star that they had seen when

  189. it rose went before them until it came

  190. direct over the place where the child

  191. was. When they saw the star, they

  192. rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. And

  193. going into the house, they saw the child

  194. with Mary his mother, and they fell down

  195. and worshiped him. Then opening their

  196. treasure, they offered him gifts, gold,

  197. and frankincense and myrr. And being

  198. warned in a dream not to return to

  199. Herod, they to their own country by

  200. another way. Oh Lord God, we thank you

  201. that our king is we thank you father

  202. of David sits on the throne at the right

  203. hand of the father and just as you

  204. always

  205. go it is our pleasure it is our honor.

  206. our glory to be your subject to to live

  207. a life that pleases you to further the

  208. advancement of your kingdom to make you

  209. known to worship you as these wise men

  210. worship you. So we worship you today in

  211. our heart

  212. that you have sent Christ to bear our

  213. sues.

  214. Amen. You may be seated.

  215. One of the things I love about the

  216. Christmas season is you read the old

  217. Christmas, the old one, and they rejoice

  218. in the kingdom of Christ. Joy to the

  219. world, the Lord has come. Let earth

  220. receive our king. It's this joyful

  221. optimistic message that Christ rule. And

  222. even as we see sometimes uh we look

  223. around at the world and we see we say,

  224. "What a mess." Oh, but what a What a

  225. change we've been in the last 2,000

  226. years. Been a massive change. As the

  227. wherever the gospel goes, it brings

  228. healing to the nations. It brings

  229. transformation. And just as Christ

  230. coming into a man's heart, God begins to

  231. sanctify him and change him and mold him

  232. or her. Uh so it is when Christ comes

  233. into a church when Christ is in a

  234. community. When Christ goes into a

  235. nation and a people group who have never

  236. heard the gospel before, hear the

  237. glorious gospel and it starts leading to

  238. a change.

  239. We we teach with the gospel. We begin to

  240. teach husbands. Love your wives as

  241. Christ. Love the church. Quit hating

  242. them. Right? And to the wives we say

  243. submit yourselves unto your husbands as

  244. unto the Lord. And the children we say

  245. to fathers, train up your and the

  246. discipline, the admonition of the Lord.

  247. So, so no longer do you follow your

  248. pagan customs, but you learn to think

  249. God's thoughts after him. And you learn

  250. what God's word says about being a

  251. father and being a mother and being a

  252. being a parent and and and how to apply

  253. God's word to your work and to your life

  254. and to your community, how to deal with

  255. your neighbors and and you say, "Well,

  256. what about that beaten swords and the

  257. file stuff?" Well, you begin in the

  258. home. You begin with your neighbors. The

  259. concept of good and the other cheek that

  260. we'll get to later in chapter five of

  261. Matthew isn't talking about national

  262. defense. It's not talking about an

  263. invader coming into your home. It's

  264. talking about your your day-to-day

  265. personal relationships. We humble

  266. ourselves and we bear insult. We don't

  267. return evil for evil. We return good for

  268. evil. We we bless other men curse. Yet

  269. that the kingdom begins on a very small

  270. level. It's like leaven that a woman

  271. into a the lump of bread until the whole

  272. is leaven. Christ begins to change us

  273. from the inside. If if we teach people

  274. love your enemies, love your neighbor,

  275. love your wife, love your husband, love

  276. your children, will that have an effect

  277. on crime rates? Yes, it does. And it's

  278. not from the outside in, it's from the

  279. inside out. You want to change America?

  280. Start with your toddlers.

  281. It doesn't happen overnight. Great those

  282. great sequoas that I saw in in

  283. California, some of them being a

  284. thousand years old. We were out there a

  285. few years ago and we saw some of these

  286. sequoas thousands of years old and a

  287. wind had just recently come by and it

  288. knocked over like four of them. Huge

  289. tree like standing like double or triple

  290. my height the root of that thing. It's

  291. like wow it seems so sad. It took

  292. thousands of years for this thing to

  293. grow. Well, it it didn't happen in a

  294. day. You can plant a tree today. It

  295. takes time to grow. It takes time for

  296. the kingdom to grow. It takes time to

  297. change things. But instead of to the

  298. outside looking all the time at two

  299. political solutions. The kingdom of God

  300. spreads in the hearts and minds of men.

  301. It starts with the home. It starts with

  302. individuals. It changes us from the

  303. inside out. That's where we begin.

  304. That's where Christ's kingdom grows in

  305. the fertile hearts of men of men and

  306. women and children and communities. All

  307. right, let's look here at Got a lot to

  308. cover because I'm going to be looking at

  309. Daniel, but let's look again at

  310. particularly uh the first verses. It

  311. says, "Now after Jesus was born in

  312. Bethlehem, so this isn't the night

  313. Christ is born. This is after, as we

  314. shall see, he's living in a house at

  315. this time. Now after Jesus was born in

  316. Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod

  317. the king, the old wise men from the east

  318. came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he

  319. who has been born king of the Jews? For

  320. we saw his star when it rose and has

  321. come to worship him. When Herod the king

  322. heard this, he was troubled and all

  323. Jerusalem with him. And assembling all

  324. the chief priests and scribes of the

  325. people, he inquired of them where the

  326. Christ was to be born. Now, there's

  327. several things that I want to point out

  328. to here that I think the original

  329. audience would have immediately seen. It

  330. would have reminded them of Daniel

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  331. chapter 2, which we're going to go

  332. through in several ways. Number one,

  333. there are wise men from the east.

  334. They're from the east. Where in the

  335. east? From Babylon. From Persia. Now,

  336. Babylon was divided up into different

  337. countries afterwards. And Persia was

  338. divided. So, they may have been from

  339. different parts of the empire, but they

  340. were from the east. We've read about

  341. wise men before in Daniel chapter 2.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  342. We're going to look at it again today.

  343. There's there's wise men. There's no

  344. reason to believe that there's no good

  345. reason to believe there's only three of

  346. them and that they're writing on camera.

  347. There are

  348. gold, frankincense, and myrr. But it

  349. doesn't doesn't say there was only

  350. three. They likely came in a very large

  351. number writing Persian is probably how

  352. they showed up. Not the way we see. They

  353. they come and if there was just three of

  354. them, I doubt they would have troubled

  355. Jerusalem very much. But when you have

  356. this this bunch of of Persian thieves

  357. showing up with minimum influence from

  358. Babylon uh a great Iran today uh that

  359. that was would have been perceived as a

  360. threat. And what are they looking for?

  361. They're looking for the king who is to

  362. be born king of the Jews. What's the

  363. response?

  364. Herod is troubled. Now Herod couldn't

  365. possibly be that king. He was doing his

  366. best to make people think he might be

  367. that king. He he had been really truly a

  368. pretty impressive man. I might go into

  369. it more. In many ways, he's an

  370. impressive man, but he was a very

  371. vicious man. He was a builder. He built

  372. incredible cities. He had been building

  373. the temple for for decades already. He

  374. had he had been a a friend of Mark

  375. Anthony. And when Mark Anthony lost uh

  376. to to Octavian 40 something years

  377. earlier you know 44 Caesar was dead for

  378. maybe 40 BC or so uh I forget the exact

  379. year but but Herod had been a loyal man

  380. to Mark Anthony and he saw Mark Anthony

  381. was defeated he humbled himself and he

  382. ran to Octaven and said listen I've been

  383. a loyal subject to Mark Anthony I will

  384. be a loyal subject to to you as well and

  385. Octaven was impressed by

  386. because the logical thing would been

  387. done is kill him and uh he says actually

  388. I'll keep you around and he made him

  389. king of Judea so he's a king he was uh

  390. he had many many wives one of them his

  391. favorite wives he's known for kicking

  392. her to death and regretting it

  393. afterwards very vicious man but he was

  394. an incredible organizer an incredible

  395. builder but one thing that would have

  396. bothered the Jew was a

  397. is is a Latin word that means Edomite.

  398. He's a descendant of Esau. I'll go into

  399. that more next week and a little bit in

  400. this sermon. But he's troubled because

  401. he knows that he cannot be the one of

  402. the line of Judah of the line of David

  403. to be the everlasting king. He doesn't

  404. have the genealogy which we just read in

  405. Matthew chapter one. He doesn't have the

  406. pedigree. He's maybe half Jewish, but

  407. everybody knows he's a descendant of

  408. Esau. And Esau is not to reign over

  409. Jacob. Jacob is to reign over Esau. So,

  410. he's troubled. If a king has been born,

  411. this king is a threat to power. Karen

  412. killed some of his own sons because he

  413. thought they were a threat to his power

  414. when he was getting close to death.

  415. That's the kind of man he was. He had no

  416. qualms about killing anyone and even his

  417. own son if he thought they were

  418. conspiring against him. Killed one of

  419. his own his own favorite wife who killed

  420. her. So he's troubled in all of

  421. Jerusalem. Why Jerusalem? Because

  422. there's a whole there's a whole uh

  423. entourage. There's a whole system.

  424. There's a there's a swamp. Let's put it

  425. in modern day. The the priest uh there's

  426. corruption in the priesthood. A bunch of

  427. Sadducey priests. There's there's

  428. corruption in the politics. all kinds of

  429. people that that shouldn't be there or

  430. they are ruling over people. So when

  431. they hear that one from the the house of

  432. David has come they are greatly troubled

  433. in trouble because Christ is a threat to

  434. the existing power.

  435. If Christ the king has come then they

  436. are in trouble. They can either bow and

  437. worship him and submit to him and

  438. relinquish their authority or they can

  439. they can seek to kill him. I think of

  440. Saul

  441. Saul was big fan of David until he

  442. figured out that David was to take his

  443. place. And then what did Saul want to do

  444. in the Old Testament? Saul wanted to

  445. kill David. Even now the mad king wants

  446. to kill the rest of his power and all of

  447. Jerusalem with him. Now we read about

  448. these wise men. They're from the east

  449. and they saw his star. They saw his star

  450. as we so so these the other names of

  451. these people are the magi.

  452. uh the word we get magician from they

  453. were astrologers they watched the

  454. heavens they watched the horoscope now

  455. they the the Jews also used horoscopes

  456. even mentioned in the book of Job for

  457. example a lion is mentioned in the book

  458. of Job horoscopes go back very very far

  459. there's different views on them the

  460. horoscopes you read about today are

  461. pagan people trying to tell the future

  462. by the stars is a very pagan concept but

  463. the Jewish concept they use the

  464. horoscope as well but it was it was a

  465. uh they believe that the sovereign God

  466. that rules over heavens and earth rules

  467. over the stars also and that he at times

  468. chooses to reveal things through the

  469. stars but they didn't look to the stars

  470. in a pagan sort of fortune telling way

  471. but these men were astrologers and

  472. there's there's probably a mixture of of

  473. paganism and thought and and thought

  474. aligning more in line with scripture

  475. among them but in any case they were

  476. magi they were astrologers they were

  477. from Persia or Babylon and they they

  478. have come to meet the king. Now to

  479. understand this I'm going to do quite a

  480. bit of reading in Daniel and um I I did

  481. a sermon on this about a year ago or a

  482. little less um but I went back and uh I

  483. want to take another look at it. I think

  484. it's very important to understand the

  485. book of Matthew. Major theme of Matthew

  486. is that Christ is the king we've been

  487. waiting for. He's here. That's the major

  488. theme. The book ends with the gospel

  489. going to all nations. Why? Because all

  490. authority in heaven and earth has been

  491. committed to him. It's a theme of the

  492. book of Daniel. So we're going to look

  493. at Daniel chapter 2. And again we see a

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  494. dream a troubled king and wise men.

  495. Daniel chapter 2 verse one. In the

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  496. second year of King Nebuchadnezzar,

  497. Nebuchadnezzar had dreamed his spirit

  498. was troubled. Okay. Matthew uses this

  499. language of a troubled king to apply to

  500. Herod and Jerusalem. Same phrasiology.

  501. Nebuchadnezzar is troubled. The Hebrew

  502. reader knows. He's been reading book and

  503. he's going to remember ah a troubled

  504. king troubled power.

  505. His spirit was troubled and his sleep

  506. left him. Then the king commanded that

  507. all the magicians, the magi, the

  508. enchanters, the sorcers, and the

  509. calaldans be summoned to tell the king

  510. his dreams. So they came in and stood

  511. before the king. And the king said to

  512. them, "I had a dream and my spirit is

  513. troubled again, troubled to know the

  514. dream." Then the cow said to the king in

  515. Aramaic, "Oh king, live forever. Tell

  516. your servants the dream and we will show

  517. the interpretation."

  518. So it's like, "Hey, we We can do this.

  519. We have books. We look to dream

  520. interpretation manuals. Just tell us the

  521. dream. We'll give you the

  522. interpretation. No problem. We do this

  523. all the time.

  524. The king answered and said to the

  525. cowians, "The word for me is firm. If

  526. you do not make known to me the dream

  527. and its interpretation, you shall be

  528. torn limb from limb, and your houses

  529. shall be laid in ruins." Oh, see James.

  530. Your house shall be made of don.

  531. But if you show the dream and its

  532. interpretation, you shall receive from

  533. me. gifts and rewards and great honor.

  534. Therefore, show me the dream and its

  535. interpretation. They answered the second

  536. time and said, "Let the king tell his

  537. servants the dream, and we will show its

  538. interpretation." Interesting. At the end

  539. of the passage, the wise men are warned

  540. in a dream not to return to.

  541. So, words coming up here, trouble, a

  542. troubled king, wise men dream. And so,

  543. what does the king do? He says, "No, no,

  544. I how this works. I give you a dream and

  545. then you give me a plausible explanation

  546. for the dream and then you kind of

  547. revise it when things don't happen the

  548. way you want it to or you tell me

  549. something flattery. I'm not going to

  550. tell you the dream. You tell me the

  551. dream and give me the interpretation. If

  552. you truly have supernatural powers, you

  553. can give me the dream and the

  554. interpretation. This is the perilous

  555. task of the wise men. And if the wise

  556. men cannot fulfill the task, what

  557. happens? the rich from limb to limb and

  558. their houses are made.

  559. The wise men need a savior.

  560. On the other hand, if they forgive

  561. dreams and interpretation, they're given

  562. gifts. What do we see? We see the wise

  563. men bringing gifts to their savior.

  564. Okay. So, there's there's a lot of

  565. common words here between Daniel 2 and

  566. and common themes between Daniel 2 and

  567. Matthew 2.

  568. The king answered and said, "I know with

  569. certainty that you are trying to gain

  570. time, if you see that the word for me is

  571. firm. If you do not make the dream known

  572. to me, there is but one sentence for

  573. you. You have agreed to speak lying and

  574. cleft words before me till the times

  575. change. Therefore, tell me the dream,

  576. and I shall know that you can show me

  577. its interpretation." No magic trick.

  578. Give me the dream. Give me the

  579. interpretation. I'm not playing with

  580. you. Verse 10. The Caldians answered the

  581. king and said, "There's not a man on

  582. earth who can meet the king. For no

  583. great and powerful king is as such the

  584. thing of any magician or enchanter or

  585. Calaldian. The thing that the king has

  586. asked is difficult

  587. and no one can show it to the king

  588. except the god whose dwelling is not

  589. with flesh." We just read at the end of

  590. chapter one, Jesus is God and flesh, the

  591. god man. Very interesting. Because of

  592. this, the king was angry and very

  593. furious and commanded that all the wise

  594. men of Babylon be destroyed. So the

  595. decree went out and the wise men were

  596. about to be killed and they thought

  597. Daniel and his companions to kill them.

  598. So wise man is a wide enough term to

  599. include Daniel and his three friends and

  600. they're all the gone out kill them all.

  601. Right? So Arich,

  602. the uh you read here in verse 14 comes

  603. to Daniel. When Daniel replied with

  604. prudence and discretion to Arioch, the

  605. captain of the king's guard, who had

  606. gone out to kill the wise men of

  607. Babylon, he declared to Arioch the

  608. king's captain. Why is the decree of the

  609. king so urgent? When Arioch made the

  610. matter known to Daniel, Daniel went in

  611. and requested the king to appoint him

  612. that he might show the interpretation to

  613. the king. So Daniel says, "Listen, just

  614. give me a little bit of time to pray

  615. here and I'll give you the

  616. interpretation."

  617. So Daniel went to his house and made the

  618. matter known to Haniah, Ma and Aariah,

  619. Asadra, Meshach, and Abednego, and told

  620. them to seek mercy from the God of

  621. heaven concerning this mystery so that

  622. Daniel and his companions might not be

  623. destroyed with the rest of the wise men

  624. of Babylon. Then the mystery was

  625. revealed to Daniel in a vision of the

  626. night, for Daniel blessed the God of

  627. heaven. I'll tell you uh so oftenimes we

  628. fail when we think the only solution

  629. political solutions when really it's

  630. like usually the worst solution.

  631. Don't get me wrong, there's a place

  632. there's absolutely a place to be engaged

  633. and be involved. If you love your

  634. neighbor, you should be involved, right?

  635. We're called to love our neighbor as

  636. ourselves and when our neighbor is being

  637. oppressed and robbed and murdered.

  638. Christian should be a voice for the

  639. voiceless. We should be we should stand

  640. up for the widow and the orphan. But

  641. Daniel's first plea is not a political

  642. plea here. He He cries out to the God of

  643. heaven.

  644. He prays.

  645. Sometimes we neglect to pray when prayer

  646. is the right thing and we neglect to act

  647. when acting is the right thing. But as

  648. we see, Daniel was a man of prayer and a

  649. man of action and he ends up being a man

  650. of influence. So they cry out to the God

  651. of heaven uh so that they would not be

  652. destroyed. Verse 20, Daniel answered and

  653. said, "Blessed be the name of God

  654. forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom

  655. and might. He times and seasons. He

  656. removes kings and sets up kings. Jesus

  657. is in that seat.

  658. When we talk about the reign of Christ,

  659. Jesus sits in that seat. He removes

  660. kings and he sets up kings.

  661. He gives wisdom to the wise and

  662. knowledge to those who have

  663. understanding. He reveals deep and

  664. hidden things. He knows what is in the

  665. darkness and the light dwells with him.

  666. To you, oh God of my fathers, I give

  667. thanks and praise for you have given me

  668. wisdom and might and Now made known to

  669. me what we ask of you. For you have made

  670. known to us the king matters. So they

  671. bless the God who rules. They know from

  672. where authority comes. They know who

  673. they know who controls the weather. They

  674. know who controls the times. They know

  675. who controls the season. It's the father

  676. and God in heaven. Verse 24. Therefore

  677. Daniel went into whom the king had

  678. appointed to destroy the wise men of

  679. Babylon. See repeated phrase wise men

  680. wise men wise men. There it is.

  681. bring me before the king and I will show

  682. the king the interpretation. The brought

  683. in Daniel before the king and hasted and

  684. said to him, I have found among the

  685. exiles from Judah a man who will make

  686. known to the king interpretation. The

  687. king declared to Daniel whose name was

  688. Belshazzar spoke to you able to make

  689. known to me the dream that I have seen

  690. and its interpretation.

  691. answered the king and said, "No wise

  692. men, enchanters,

  693. magi, magicians,

  694. or astrologers, people that study the

  695. stars, uh, not astronomers, they were

  696. astrologers, but it was all kind of

  697. mixed up back then to show the king the

  698. mystery that the king has asked. But

  699. there is a God in heaven who reveals

  700. mysteries. And he has made known to King

  701. Nebuchadnezzar what will be in the

  702. latter days, your and the visions of

  703. your head as you lay in bed are. So he's

  704. saying you know what wisdom of men

  705. experts can solve this problem. This is

  706. not a matter of expertise or intellect.

  707. This is something that only god can do.

  708. But my god unlike all your pagan gods is

  709. a revealer of mysteries. You know demons

  710. have uh a lot of knowledge a lot of

  711. power to do certain things.

  712. you know, when when people are talking

  713. uh like like I' I've heard the

  714. testimonies of uh witches and u

  715. what do you call them the uh fortune

  716. tellers people like that people people

  717. who

  718. uh tell stories as Christians about

  719. really incredible revelations that they

  720. had from their spirit guide which they

  721. now believe accurately to be demonic

  722. entity and and they could give they

  723. given like I heard a testimony of a

  724. woman I She was on Michael's one time

  725. also on

  726. the other guy with Christian who does

  727. these kind of things. Anyway, she's on

  728. there and she was she was talking about

  729. how she gave an incredible prophecy to

  730. this woman or telling this woman that

  731. she started speaking as if her dead

  732. brother who was was murdered and started

  733. giving her details of the murder that no

  734. human being could know. She never met

  735. the woman in her life and the woman

  736. became like enraged over it. How how did

  737. the demon know that? Because it was past

  738. and the demon knew about this woman and

  739. what had happened to her. Demons can see

  740. and recount facts as they have been, but

  741. the demons don't know the future. They

  742. may be able to guess kind of like we're

  743. able to guess and sometimes we get it

  744. right. Sometimes we get it wrong. But

  745. but demons don't actually know the

  746. future because they're not in control.

  747. They they know a lot of things that have

  748. happened. They know things that they

  749. have done and and sometimes they can

  750. manipulate and do things in the

  751. immediate future. But demons don't have

  752. knowledge of the future in the same way

  753. that God God knows the end from the

  754. beginning. And so, uh, it's not in the

  755. power of these magicians or or those

  756. demon spirit guides to tell the king

  757. what's going to happen. But God knows

  758. and God is a revealer of mysteries.

  759. Notice that word reveals. This is a a

  760. key word. And he says he's going to

  761. reveal to you what will happen in the

  762. latter days. Now, some translations will

  763. say last days, which is a phrase that

  764. means later on. Doesn't necessarily mean

  765. at the end of time. It just means later

  766. on. These are things that are going to

  767. happen in the future.

  768. and latter days. He uses this word

  769. multiple times in verse 29. So you king

  770. as you laid in bed thought of what would

  771. be after this. And he who reveals

  772. mysteries made known to you what is to

  773. be. But as for me this mystery has been

  774. revealed to me not because of any wisdom

  775. that I have bore more than all the

  776. living but in order that the

  777. interpretation may be known to the king

  778. and that you may know the thoughts of

  779. your mind. The word apocalypse that we

  780. the book of revelation means unveiling

  781. and in that same like like in the Greek

  782. translation here it's a it's a variety

  783. of that word I believe I studied that in

  784. the past that it is the word basically

  785. apocalypse is used in the verb form

  786. revealed revealed revealed God is

  787. unveiling to you what is going to happen

  788. in the coming centuries from now till

  789. the coming of we will say Christ and

  790. therefore it's going to provide a

  791. timeline you have a timeline wise men

  792. could watch the timeline until the

  793. coming of the kingdom of God.

  794. He said, "You saw, oh king, and behold,

  795. a great image. This image, mighty and

  796. exceeding brightness, stood before you,

  797. and its appearance was frightening. The

  798. head of this image was of fine gold. Its

  799. chest and arms were of silver, its

  800. middle and thighs of bronze, its legs of

  801. iron, its feet partly of iron and partly

  802. of clay. As you looked, a stone was cut

  803. out by no human hand and it struck the

  804. image on his feet of iron and clay and

  805. broke them into pieces. So he sees this

  806. thing. He sees this image and he's not

  807. this is the stone dream. He's not

  808. telling the interpretation but this the

  809. stone is cut out without hand

  810. and the image on the broken piece. Then

  811. the iron the clay the The silver and the

  812. gold all together were broken in pieces

  813. and became like the chaff of the summer

  814. threshing floors and the wind carried

  815. them away so that not a trace of them

  816. could be found that the stone that

  817. struck the image became a great mountain

  818. and filled the whole earth. This was the

  819. dream. Now we will tell the king

  820. interpretation since these kingdoms that

  821. had been heavy substances become like

  822. chest. You know when you take wheat and

  823. you beat it with the stick the grain of

  824. wheat separate from the you can take it

  825. and on a windy day or you can have a guy

  826. stand there with a fan and you can throw

  827. the grain up in the air and the wind

  828. will blow the lighter chaff into one

  829. pile and the grain will fall into

  830. another pile so that you can gather the

  831. grain up into your barn and then you can

  832. burn the chaff. John the Baptist will

  833. say for the king heaven is at hand. It's

  834. right here right here. Come up here. And

  835. he will use the imagery of the Messiah's

  836. coming and his hand is in his hand and

  837. he will thoroughly clean his and the

  838. chaff will burn with unquenchable fire

  839. and the grain will gather to his barn.

  840. That imagery is taken in part from this

  841. dream and other places like Psalm one

  842. and little places that speak of the

  843. wicked being like death. But this

  844. judgment language that says the Messiah

  845. has come. He's going to separate the

  846. righteous from the ungodly, the wheat

  847. from the chaff. He's going to burn the

  848. fire. He's going to gather the righteous

  849. unto himself. That's the imagery being

  850. used here. But now he's dealing with

  851. kingdoms. These kingdoms become his

  852. chap. And what happens to the stone?

  853. It became a great mountain

  854. and it fills the whole earth.

  855. Now what's the interpretation?

  856. Verse 37. You, oh king of the king, to

  857. whom the God of heaven has given the

  858. kingdom. Where does your kingdom come

  859. from?

  860. comes from God. He gave it to you.

  861. You're pagan and he uses you as he sees

  862. fit. He's given the kingdom, the power

  863. and the might and the glory. And into

  864. whose hand he has been has given

  865. wherever they dwell the children of man,

  866. the field, and the birds of heaven,

  867. making you rule over them all. You are

  868. the head of gold. Okay? So, you saw this

  869. image. The head was of gold. He was not

  870. even going to enter you and your

  871. kingdom. In other words, is that head of

  872. gold.

  873. you're you're at the beginning of the

  874. timeline, which logically means that

  875. what comes after comes after you. And so

  876. he says that here, verse 39, another

  877. kingdom, inferior king, shall rise after

  878. you. And yet a third kingdom of bronze,

  879. which shall rule over all the earth, and

  880. there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong

  881. as iron, because iron breaks to pieces

  882. and shatters all things. And like iron

  883. that crushes, it shall break and crush

  884. all these. So we're told the timeline,

  885. Babylon is the head of gold. A kingdom

  886. that is inferior to you. Meaning at

  887. present that kingdom is under your

  888. authority. It's it's inferior to you. I

  889. don't think it means that the quality of

  890. the kingdom is necessarily going to be a

  891. worse kingdom because it's actually

  892. going to last longer. The Persian

  893. Empire, but uh but right now they're

  894. inferior to you. They're under you.

  895. They're going this not Nebuchadnezzar

  896. would want to hear one of your subject

  897. kingdoms is going to take your place.

  898. That's what Daniel's telling him very

  899. forthrightly. No reason to lie about

  900. that. He's telling him something he

  901. doesn't want to hear. But the the the

  902. next kingdom, the silver kingdom, would

  903. be media Persia because it was all about

  904. gold. It fit his kingdom very well.

  905. Media Persia used silver currency used

  906. to market the silver currency to gain

  907. power to buy people off. Um and then

  908. after that comes the kingdom of bronze.

  909. Heroditus refers to the armies of

  910. Alexander the Great who conquered the

  911. Persians. conquered them cloud in bronze

  912. said they were cloud and bronze. It was

  913. a bronze empire. Bronze was the metal

  914. that Alexander used. Uh it was it was

  915. superior. It didn't rust like like like

  916. iron does. Um it's an alloy of tin and

  917. nine parts tin and one part copper. So

  918. it has it has strength. It's less likely

  919. to rust. Uh and his army was cloud in

  920. bronze. And then after that comes the

  921. iron kingdom.

  922. the Romans defeated the Greeks and uh at

  923. the time they they didn't have an

  924. emperor yet but uh but shortly

  925. thereafter the empire rises you got the

  926. iron and clay now what what happens

  927. there is like like iron it crushes it

  928. shall break and crush all of these it

  929. just it ruled it it ruled it defeated

  930. all the Persians all the Babylonians

  931. they were all subjected to Rome

  932. and as we saw the feet and toes partly

  933. potter's clay and partly of iron, it

  934. shall be a divided kingdom. But some of

  935. the firmness of iron shall be in it. But

  936. as you saw iron mixed with the soft

  937. clay, and as the toes of the feet were

  938. partly iron and partly clay, so the

  939. kingdom shall be partly strong and

  940. partly brittle. As you saw, the iron

  941. mixed with soft clay, so they will mix

  942. with one another in marriage, but they

  943. will not hold together just as iron does

  944. not mix with clay. So this this Roman

  945. Empire would be Roman Republic would be

  946. succeeded by the Roman Empire. It's very

  947. interesting that Octavian after Julius

  948. Caesar dies Octavian gives his sister to

  949. Mark Anthony to be his wife. Mark

  950. Anthony goes down to Cleopatra who

  951. already had a son with Julius Caesar and

  952. he breaks he divorces his wife sister of

  953. Octavian and and starts shacking up with

  954. Cleopatra and Octaven said that's an act

  955. of war and they go to war with each

  956. other that's interesting that that right

  957. after that is when Herod comes Octaven

  958. said I was I was loyal to Mark Anthony

  959. I'll be loyal to you and so it really

  960. very accurately at that time there's all

  961. these alliances being formed in Rome

  962. They're like iron and clay. But Rome

  963. Rome as an empire is full of civil war.

  964. This entire history there's just one one

  965. successor fighting with another

  966. successor and each one sending the other

  967. one's a usurper and finally killing

  968. them. And I mean that goes on for for

  969. for the Roman Empire's history. There's

  970. constant civil wars. Most of their most

  971. of their emperors died by unnatural

  972. causes like murder. Uh, in fact, I think

  973. up to the time of um I mean it's it's

  974. thought that most of these emperors over

  975. in Octavia, they ended up dying by

  976. assassination plots in one way or

  977. another or by suicide. And so it it's a

  978. union. It's a union of power, but

  979. there's a lot of division. There's a lot

  980. of civil war. I think that describes

  981. Rome very well. And so what happens

  982. next? In the days of those kings, what

  983. kings? Not Babylon, not Persia, not

  984. Greece, not the Roman Republic, but in

  985. the days of those kings, the days of the

  986. empire. All right? Heaven will set up a

  987. kingdom that shall never be destroyed.

  988. And the days of those kings in the first

  989. century, not at the end of time. The

  990. feet are not separated from the body.

  991. There's no 2,000 year gap here. that the

  992. feet are iron and clay connected to the

  993. iron legs in the days of those kings.

  994. The God of heaven will set up a kingdom

  995. that shall never be joy. Nor shall the

  996. kingdom be left to another people. It

  997. shall break in pieces all these kingdoms

  998. and bring them to an end. and it shall

  999. stand forever just as you saw that the

1000. stone was cut out from the mountain by

1001. no human hand that it broke in pieces

1002. the iron the clay uh the iron the bronze

1003. the clay the silver and the gold a great

1004. god is made known to the king what shall

1005. be after this the dream is certain and

1006. it interpretation sure you can think on

1007. it it's going to happen

1008. Nebuchadnezzar fell upon his face

1009. falls down and worship and paid homage

  1010. to Daniel

1011. and commanded there an offering an

1012. infant be offered up to him. So he

  1013. worshiped Daniel. He's pagan. He doesn't

1014. know any better. The king answered and

1015. said to Daniel, "Truly your God is a God

1016. of God and Lord of kings." You hear that

1017. language, King of Kings and Lord of

  1018. Lords and a revealer, a mystery.

1019. for you have been able to reveal this

1020. mystery. Then the king gave Daniel high

1021. honors and many great gifts and made him

1022. ruler over the whole province of Babylon

1023. and chief prefect over all the wise men

  1024. of Babylon.

1025. Daniel made a request of the king and he

  1026. appointed Shadrach, Meshach, and

1027. Abednego over the affairs of the

1028. province of Babylon. But Daniel remained

  1029. in the king's court.

1030. So Daniel is a savior to the wise men.

1031. Of course, the wise men were scheduled

1032. to be executed. The Arch, the captain of

1033. the guard, had already been sent out to

  1034. kill them all.

1035. And Daniel by the God in heaven gives

1036. the dream and the interpretation. And

1037. these wise men, what do you think they

  1038. thought about this?

1039. Oh, thank you. Thank you.

1040. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. How did

1041. you do this? How did you do this? How

1042. did you know? Do you think some of them

  1043. became believers? I I think so.

1044. Some of them later on there, you know,

1045. the the uh the wise men were were kind

  1046. of like

1047. kind of like Nazi scientists after World

1048. War II. Have you ever heard of Operation

  1049. Pap

1050. after World War II? a bunch of the Nazi

1051. scientists von Braum different people

1052. they said you know these people done

1053. some real damage but we can't kill them

1054. because they know too much they're too

1055. useful they are useful knowledge they

1056. know they know how rockets work they

1057. know how some people think UFOs work I

1058. mean there's different theories about

1059. where different technologies come from I

1060. don't know about all that but it is an

1061. absolute fact that the most brilliant of

1062. the N scientist was kept either by

1063. Soviet Union or by the United

1064. because they they do too much. The wise

1065. men would be when the Persians come in

1066. and conquer the Babylonians, they say,

1067. "Give us your intellectual. We want to

1068. use them." Right? They stick around. So,

1069. they stick around to the Babylonian

1070. Empire, the Persian Empire, the Greek

1071. Empire. You don't get rid of your, you

1072. know, your 152 IQ. You keep them around.

1073. And so, uh, kept coming up and they

1074. watch and they read over the next

1075. 400 something years and they see Daniel

1076. prophecies coming place. Now there's all

1077. kinds of prophecies in the book of

  1078. Daniel. There's multiple timelines. I'm

1079. only going into this one. One of them my

1080. favorite one is Daniel 7.

1081. One like the son of man comes up to the

1082. end of days to receive a kingdom that

1083. all peoples and nations and tongues

1084. should worship and serve him. What do

1085. the wise men do when they come to Jesus?

1086. They bow down and they worship him. They

1087. worship him because he is the divine

1088. king they have been waiting for and they

1089. watch. All right, let's go back and read

1090. verse one again. Back in Matthew chapter

1091. one says now after Jesus was born in

1092. Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod

1093. the king. Behold wise men from the east

1094. came to Jerusalem saying where is he who

1095. has been born king of the Jews? For we

1096. saw his star when it rose and had come

1097. to worship him. His star. What are you

1098. talking about? Well, this is debated.

  1099. I've heard a very very interesting

1100. theory that deals with constellations. I

1101. don't think I'm sold on the idea but

1102. it's very interesting. Michael talked

1103. about it and uh supposedly BC which

1104. sounds a little off by a couple years

  1105. because I've been told

  1106. but anyway

1107. that that uh that the constellation the

1108. Virgo which is the Virgin above her was

1109. Leo the lion was the star and Saturn

1110. which is like the king stars and they

1111. all line up in a very particular way. So

1112. you got this this combination of virgin

1113. and of the tribe of Judah and Virgo. And

1114. it all lined up on a particular day like

1115. a like a few like like 23 minutes on

1116. September 11th, which was Roshana, the

1117. head of the year, the the Yumua, the day

1118. of blasting in 3 BC. They all line up at

1119. a very particular time and that ancients

1120. understood this as the king from the

1121. tribe of Judah has come of the virgin.

1122. There's this excellent theory about it.

1123. You can Google it. I don't know if

1124. that's right or wrong. are a whole lot

1125. of interesting things that seem kind of

1126. beyond coincidental except for the time

1127. indicators unless scholars are wrong

1128. about when Hera died. But uh it's

1129. interesting because Roashana is the day

1130. of the year when began to rain on

1131. Roashana was the official beginning date

1132. of the rain and that's when the star

1133. appeared on September 11th the beginning

1134. of the piece of tabernacles when the

1135. word was made flesh and tabernacled

1136. among us. There's all kinds of

1137. interesting things to go into, but in

1138. any case, there was something about a

1139. star that these magi recognized in

1140. heaven and it led them to a place. It

1141. led them to initially the capital of

1142. Judea, Jerusalem. That's where you

1143. expect the king to be born. They saw his

1144. star arrive. So, they have Daniel's

1145. prophecy laying out the time sequence

1146. and they have a star that in some way is

1147. pointing at Jerusalem, pointing at

1148. Israel. Where is this concept of the

1149. star that they would have gotten? Daniel

  1150. doesn't mention the star. Where's the

1151. star? Well, they also would have had the

1152. books that Daniel had. They would have

1153. had the Torah. They would have had the

1154. five books of Moses. And there's a

1155. prophecy, a messianic talk about a star

1156. and a book of numbers. This guy, a

1157. gentile named Bum makes this prophecy.

1158. And here what he says in Numbers 24 15

1159. to 19. He says, "And he took up his

1160. discourse and said, the oracle The son

1161. of the oracle of the man whose eye is

1162. opened. The oracle of him who hears the

1163. words of God and knows the knowledge of

1164. the high who sees the vision of the

1165. almighty falling down with his eyes

1166. uncovered. I see him not. I behold him

1167. but not me. A star shall come out of

1168. Jacob. A spectre shall rise out of

1169. Israel. It shall crush the forehead of

1170. Moab and break down all the sons of

1171. Shef. Edom where Herod came from shall

1172. be dispossessed. Fear the capital of

  1173. Edom.

1174. Fear also his enemies shall be

1175. dispossessed. Israel is doing valiantly.

1176. And one from Jacob shall exercise

1177. dominion and destroy the survivors of

  1178. the city.

1179. star rising in Jacob dispossessing the

  1180. Edomite.

1181. That's that's the kind of picture that

1182. these wise men were reading. We see this

  1183. come good news.

  1184. Good news for Herod.

1185. Verse three. When Herod the king heard

1186. this, he was troubled. Now you see why

1187. he's troubled. And Jerusalem with him

1188. and assembling the chief priests

1189. described to the people inquire of them

1190. where the Christ was to be born. He

1191. assembled describes the chief priest.

1192. What is he doing? He's assembling the

  1193. wise men.

  1194. I'm just making a thematic contextual

  1195. association of Daniel 2 and Matthew 2. a

1196. lot of things. I think the original

1197. reader would have saw all that and he

1198. wants to know from our holy books where

1199. is the Christ not a Christ the Christ

  1200. was to be born.

1201. They told him in Bethlehem of Judea for

1202. so it is written by the prophet and you

1203. oh Bethlehem and the land of Judah are

1204. by no means least among the rulers of

1205. Judah for from you shall come a ruler

1206. who will shepherd my people Israel. Now,

1207. this is found in in Micah. I'll look at

1208. that in a second. And notice he's going

1209. to be a ruler who shepherds my people

1210. Israel. Now, Bethlehem was the hometown

1211. of a shepherd boy named David who was

1212. taken from ruling over the sheep to rule

1213. over his people Israel. So, this is very

1214. after David. This is written uh Micah

1215. was a contemporary with Isaiah and

1216. Hosea. And it was about the time Assyria

1217. was invading the north. Michael was

1218. prophesying to the north and to the

1219. south. And here's this thing that out of

1220. Bethlehem will come the one who will be

  1221. a leader

1222. who will shepherd my people Israel. He

1223. said I am the good

1224. who gives his life to the people. He is

1225. the ruler, the star, the

1226. stone cut out without hands of his

1227. kingdom. Here I want to show you though

1228. a little richness we get from Micah

1229. itself. Another detail that Matthew

1230. doesn't give us. But you, oh Bethlehem,

1231. who are too little to be among the clans

1232. of Judah, from you shall come forth for

1233. me one to be ruler Israel, whose coming

1234. forth is from of old, from ancient days.

1235. There's different ways to translate this

1236. word that they put ancient days. Um, but

1237. is a word for eternity

1238. all over the world. In fact, when Hebrew

1239. blessings, they always make the

  1240. blessings to

  1241. the kingdom.

1242. the king of the universe. That's the

1243. word used here for ancient day. So the

1244. LSB when they translated it kind of the

1245. same thing with King James version and

1246. NASB they all emphasize his going forth

  1247. is from everlasting

1248. from the ancient days. Everlasting.

1249. What's the point here? The point is that

1250. in the Hebrew it's very clear that that

1251. even though he's going to be born in at

1252. Bethlehem he's been he's going forth is

1253. from everlasting from eternity. So he's

1254. going to be born a child but there's

1255. something about him that's eternal

1256. something everlasting is going to be

1257. born to the Virgin Mary. He is as we

1258. said last week the God man Emmanuel God

1259. with us. His going forth is from

1260. everlasting but now a child in a manger

1261. born to Mary and at the time of Matthew

  1262. 2 living in a house

  1263. in Bethlehem.

1264. Then Herod summoned the wise men

1265. secretly and asked from them what time

1266. the star had appeared. And he sent them

1267. to Bethlehem saying go and search

1268. diligently for the child and when you

1269. have found him bring me word that I too

1270. may come and worship him. Notice

1271. Nebuchadnezzar he bows down and worships

1272. Daniel. Oh I want to worship this king.

1273. I'm so excited to live for the king.

1274. Verse 9. After listening to the king,

1275. they went on their way, and behold, the

1276. star that they had seen when it rose

1277. went before them until they came to rest

1278. over the place where the child was. When

1279. they saw the star, they rejoiced

1280. exceedingly with great joy. Something

  1281. about the star

  1282. visibly moved from Jerusalem

1283. to Bethlehem, which is about four miles

  1284. away. It's not a great distance.

  1285. walked

1286. four miles away. It's not far David's

  1287. hometown. And I don't know that I buy

1288. the horoscope. As interesting as it is,

1289. if Herod died in 4 BC, it seems like

1290. Herod is want to know when thinking

1291. maybe the child was born earlier.

1292. Doesn't mean that he was could have been

1293. very shortly after the birth of Christ.

1294. I think there's some evidence that it

1295. was. Um, but there's also a theory that

1296. the child is two years old, which would

1297. make Jesus like 35 at the time of his

1298. death and not 33. So, or yeah, 33. So, I

  1299. don't I don't know about all that, but

  1300. they're astrologers.

1301. They watch stars and it leads them to

1302. Jesus. We know that because the text

  1303. says

1304. and going into the house they saw the

1305. child with Mary's mother and they fell

1306. down and worshiped him. Then opening

1307. their treasures they offered him gold

1308. gifts gold and frankincense and being

1309. warned in dream not to return to Herod

1310. they departed to their own country by

1311. another way. They warned in a dream

1312. was warned in a dream. They are dream

1313. interpreters. One more point of contact

1314. with Daniel chapter 2. I believe that if

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

1315. we read Matthew 2 without reading Daniel

  1316. 2, we're missing essential cont.

1317. Well, here's the thing. The Bible was

1318. written for us. It wasn't written to us.

1319. It was written to an original audience,

1320. an audience that read the Tanakh.

1321. And they were extremely acquainted with

1322. the book of Daniel. And they were

1323. acquainted with the Torah. acquainted

1324. with the prophets. And so Matthew, as we

1325. go through Matthew, he's constantly

1326. bringing in the Old Testament. He's

1327. quoting Old Testament prophets. He's

  1328. quoting Micah. He's quoting Isaiah. He's

1329. quoting he's making illusions to the

1330. narrative. And sometimes it's not

1331. obvious in the text because audience is

1332. kind of cumbersome. Every time he's

1333. explaining every little detail of

1334. nuance, he expected his audience to pick

1335. up on it. So when we read it, here's

1336. here's the beauty of it. I said last

1337. I'll say it again. The main things are

1338. the plain things. We can dip in this

1339. text and say Jesus is the God's king and

1340. we should worship him. That's a right

  1341. interpretation.

1342. And we can dig deeper and we can look at

1343. the lens of the Old Testament and we get

1344. a little bit more of what the original

1345. audience also would have picked up. And

1346. that's that's what we ran on here. Very

1347. simple though is that wise men worship

1348. Jesus and wise men bring in gifts and

1349. wise men fear God and not man. We can

1350. pick up those things very easily. They

1351. were warned in a dream don't go back to

1352. go home another way. And so they did.

1353. And so what's our pro what's the proper

1354. response of wise men? One is

1355. we also should bow, surrender and

  1356. worship the king.

  1357. Without Christ, your life

  1358. is an utter failure.

1359. You can you can retire a billionaire and

  1360. live.

1361. You can be set in

  1362. beautiful

1363. president United States be a billionaire

  1364. saving the world.

1365. But if you don't have Christ much more

  1366. man

  1367. without Christ your life

1368. your life will not have meaning. Now I'm

1369. not saying following Christ will make

1370. your life easy. It may get a lot harder

  1371. because

1372. was troubled by the coming of Jesus and

1373. by the ones bringing the message of

  1374. Jesus.

1375. If the wise men would have gone back to

1376. Herod, Herod would have killed them

1377. because they knew who the king was. He

1378. would have killed them and he probably

1379. would have killed and he would have

1380. sought to kill the child finding out

  1381. where he was at.

1382. So when you sign up to be a Christian,

  1383. you're signing up for a fight.

1384. When you align yourself with Christ,

  1385. you're you're you're already in a war.

1386. for the hearts and the minds of men and

  1387. women, children.

1388. To be a Christian brings you in conflict

1389. with the unseen cosmic powers and with

1390. the seen powers that reject the

1391. authority of the Lord Jesus Christ. It

1392. brings conflict. If you start living

1393. your life by the word of God, your

1394. family will say, "You've joined a cult.

1395. You're strange. Your children are going

  1396. to turn out weird.

1397. Why can't you do what the rest of us do?

1398. Why can't you just go along? Why can't

1399. you just get in line?

1400. Wear the stupid mask and shut up.

1401. But we as wise men are to bow,

1402. surrender, and worship him only shall

  1403. we.

1404. Second thing is they give him gifts. I

  1405. think it's so interesting.

1406. Nebuchadnezzar said to them, "If you can

1407. give me the dream of tribulation, I'll

1408. give you gifts." God does give us many

1409. great wonderful gifts. It should be our

1410. desire to give them right back to them.

  1411. Our relationship,

  1412. our treasure,

1413. the days of our life, our health. Some

1414. people want to try to con

1415. children will say, "Ah, I want to enjoy

1416. them in my youth. When I get old, I I'll

  1417. just say a prayer and I I'll get I'll

1418. get to go to heaven, but I can enjoy

  1419. life, too.

1420. How smart God are you? I believe on the

1421. absolutely why do you want to waste your

1422. life of your life to the devil to give

  1423. God the less

1424. he gave you every gift you have

1425. your health or the dream you have it is

1426. a gift from God your relationships your

1427. family your children your friendship how

1428. can you say oh yeah but if I follow

1429. Jesus my my my friends or my boyfriend

  1430. my girlfriend won't follow I'm reminded

1431. of a story of piano player

1432. used to come to church many years ago.

1433. None of you knew her. Nobody in this

1434. room knew her. Name was Joy Walker. Boy,

1435. she was a joyful woman. And uh when she

1436. was a young girl, she was probably up in

1437. the 80s at the time in the 90s. When she

1438. was when she was a girl, uh her her kind

1439. of adopted parents were an evangelist in

1440. life. And they they used to preach all

1441. over the south and everywhere. I

1442. remember it was just the south. It was

1443. all over the place. And one day um The

1444. famous Bonnie from Bonnie and Clyde came

1445. into the tent meeting and the story is

1446. that Bonnie is the story she told me

1447. that the cell heroped Christian mother

1448. had told her Bonnie was

  1449. convicted

1450. by the hearing of the gospel of Jesus

  1451. and itself

1452. And the evangelist's wife was talking

  1453. with her seren

1454. right now. God's not ready to follow

1455. Jesus. And it was just a couple weeks

1456. later they were both stop the

1457. read the book and here stop the pieces

1458. in a car running from the

1459. time the call was given.

1460. She didn't want to bow.

1461. She died a death and is most reasonably

  1462. in hell.

1463. She didn't want to give it back to God.

1464. She wanted to give it back to Christ.

1465. Wise men bow and worship the king. Wise

1466. men give him their life, the treasures,

1467. the relationships, the hopes, the

1468. dreams. They surrender and repentance.

1469. And wise men fear God and not man. Jesus

1470. said, "Do not fear him destroy the

1471. do nothing but fear him body and soul

  1472. fear God.

  1473. Don't waste your life.

1474. Jesus is king. Now there's debate over

1475. uh whether or not the king of God has

1476. made a difference in the world. I read

1477. history and I think no doubt it has.

  1478. Wherever the gospel grows,

  1479. Christianity goes with it.

1480. learning literature goes with it,

1481. science goes with it, people wanting to

1482. solve problems and leave the world a

1483. better place. I think a person can be a

1484. better place. I I urge you to make your

1485. life mission in some way to make the

1486. world better than for you not having

1487. been here by allowing Christ by

1488. surrendering and having Christ for you.

1489. You can do it in any way. You can say,

1490. "I want to bring the kingdom of God to

1491. bear in my place of employment, in my

1492. neighborhood, in my community. God, use

1493. me. I want to give my life back to you.

1494. I want to lay it at your feet in Jesus."

1495. Christianity want the world just wants

1496. to live live up pleasure for the moment.

1497. You know, if we're not here, we're

  1498. spending our kids inheritance.

1499. The Christian wants to glorify God and

  1500. their family, the work.

  1501. their lives.

1502. Leave the world a better place than they

1503. found. Let us pray. Father, we thank

1504. you, oh God, that you are the king. You

  1505. are our savior.

1506. You are our savior. You came to save us

1507. from the sentence of death. Came to bear

1508. our sins in your own body.

1509. And Lord, it is our pleasure to give our

1510. lives to you, to worship you, to serve

1511. you. God, I pray Lord today that you

1512. would inspire in the hearts of your

1513. people a desire not just to live with

1514. pleasure and lift, but God there would

1515. be a desire in this place in this house

1516. to live for you with all of our hearts

  1517. and minds.
