  1. Matthew

  2. this morning and disappointed maybe that

  3. I'm starting by going to chapter one.

  4. I'm going to read the entirety of

  5. chapter 2, but I'm going to focus on

  6. five quotations from the Old Testament.

  7. Look at the way that Matthew is using

  8. these quotations to show that there's

  9. something deeper below the surface

  10. at first meets the eye particularly for

  11. a modern reader. My son this morning is

  12. the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

  13. Jesus made the lost sheep of house of

  14. Israel his first priority during his

  15. ministry. Now Jesus the good shepherd

  16. seeks lost sheep in every nation. Many

  17. many times Jesus will refer to himself

  18. as a shepherd and he refers to us as a

  19. sheep. The people of his pasture this is

  20. a new analogy a new metaphor. It's in

  21. the old testaments 23 says the Lord is

  22. my shepherd. I shall not want. It's it's

  23. uh David himself had been a shepherd and

  24. God said I I took you from the sheepfold

  25. to shepherd my people Israel. Shepherds

  26. become an analogy for kings and for

  27. priests to whose job was to lead the pe

  28. people and teach the sheep. We went into

  29. it last week about the analogy today in

  30. the word constant being a shepherd. But

  31. Jesus saw himself as the good shepherd.

  32. And multiple times in the book of

  33. Matthew, he refers to the lost sheep of

  34. the house of Israel. Now, first

  35. appearance, it's going to look like that

  36. has nothing to do with this text, but

  37. I'm going to tell you that it does.

  38. Maybe a complicated sermon. I pray that

  39. God help him uh to bring clarity instead

  40. of obscure things. And I hope he gives

  41. you the attention stand to follow along.

  42. If you read with me now from Matthew

    Matthew 1:18

  43. chapter 1 verse 18

  44. starting in Matthew 1:18. Now the birth

    Matthew 1:18

  45. of Jesus Christ took place in this way.

  46. When his mother Mary had been matured to

  47. Joseph before they came together she was

  48. found to be with child from the Holy

  49. Spirit. And her husband Joseph being a

  50. just man and unwilling to put her to

  51. shame resolved to divorce her quietly.

  52. But as you considered these things,

  53. behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to

  54. him in a dream, saying, Joseph, son of

  55. David, do not fear to take Mary as your

  56. wife. For that which is conceived in her

  57. holy spirit, she will bear a son. You

  58. shall call his name Jesus, for he will

  59. save his people from their s. All this

  60. took place to fulfill what the Lord has

  61. spoken by the prophet. Behold, a virgin

  62. shall conceive and bear a son, and they

  63. shall call his name Emmanuel, which

  64. means God with us. When Joseph woke, he

  65. did as the angel of the Lord commanded

  66. him. He took his wife, but knew her not

  67. because she given birth to Jesus was

  68. born of Judea in the days of Herod the

  69. king. Behold, a wise man from the east

  70. came to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he

  71. who has been born king of the Jews? He

  72. saw his star when it rose and had come

  73. to worship him. When Herod the king

  74. heard it, he was troubled and all

  75. Jerusalem with him. And assembling all

  76. the chief priests and scribes of the

  77. people, he inquired of them where the

  78. Christ was to be born. They told him,

  79. "In Bethlehem, but Judea, for so it is

  80. written by the prophet, and you, oh

  81. Bethlehem, and the land of Judah are by

  82. a knowing priest among the rulers of

  83. Judah. For from you shall come a ruler

  84. who will will

  85. my people Israel. Then Herod summoned

  86. the wise men secretly and asked him from

  87. them what time the star had appeared.

  88. And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying,

  89. "Go and search diligently for the child.

  90. When you have found him, bring me word

  91. that I too may come and worship him.

  92. After listening to the king, they went

  93. on their way. And behold, the star that

  94. they had seen when it rose went before

  95. them until it came to rest over the

  96. place where the child was. When they saw

  97. the star, they rejoiced with great joy.

  98. And going into the house, they saw the

  99. child of Mary, his mother, and they fell

  100. down and worshiped him. Then opening

  101. their treasures, they offered him gifts,

  102. gold, and frankincense and myrr. And

  103. being warned in a dream not to return to

  104. Herod, they departed to their own

  105. country by another way. And when they

  106. had departed, behold the angel of the

  107. Lord appeared to Joseph in the dream and

  108. said, "Rise, take the child and his

  109. mother and flee to Egypt and remain

  110. there until I tell you. For Herod is

  111. about to search for the child to destroy

  112. them." And he rose and took the child

  113. and mother by night, departed to Egypt,

  114. and remained there until the death of

  115. Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord

  116. had spoken by the prophet out of Egypt,

  117. I called my son. And when they departed,

  118. the old angel of the Lord appeared to

  119. Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take

  120. the child and his mother and flee to

  121. Egypt, remain there until I tell you.

  122. For Herod is about to search for the

  123. child to destroy him." And he rose and

  124. took the child and the mother by night,

  125. departed to Egypt and remain there until

  126. the death of Herod. This was to fulfill

  127. what the Lord had spoken by the prophet,

  128. "Out of Egypt I called my son.

  129. that devil.

  130. Sorry about that.

  131. Verse 16. Then Herod when he saw that he

  132. had been tricked by the wise men became

  133. furious and sent killed all the male

  134. children of Bethlehem and all the region

  135. who were two years old and under

  136. according to the time that he had

  137. ascertained from the wise men. Then was

  138. fulfilled what was spoken by the A voice

  139. was heard in Rama weeping in loud

  140. lamentation. Rachel weeping for her

  141. children. She refused to be comforted

  142. for they are no more.

  143. When Herod died, an angel of the Lord

  144. appeared in the dream to Joseph in

  145. Egypt, saying, "Rise, take the child and

  146. his mother and go to the land of Israel,

  147. for those who sought the child's life

  148. are dead." And he rose and the child and

  149. his mother and went to the land of

  150. Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus

  151. was running over Judea in place of the

  152. father, he was afraid to go there. And

  153. being warned in the dream, he to the

  154. district of Galilee. And he went and

  155. lived in the city called Nazareth, so

  156. that what was spoken by the prophets

  157. might be fulfilled, that he would be

  158. called a Nazarene. Let's pray. Oh Lord

  159. God, I pray, Father, this morning that

  160. you would give us great clarity on this

  161. issue before us, that you would help us

  162. to see and to hear. God, you would make

  163. us rejoice in you, the good shepherd who

  164. seeks lost sheep, who bring restoration

  165. to the broken, to the backs, to the

  166. person who strayed far from you. Yet you

  167. are a shepherd that loves the lost sheep

  168. and you seek them out and you restore

  169. them to your fold that you might heal

  170. them and save them. We thank you in

  171. Jesus name we pray. Amen. You may be

  172. seated.

  173. Well,

  174. we've gone over this text, most of the

  175. text over and over again up until the

  176. very end. And I was looking and I kept

  177. noticing I I brought it out in previous

  178. ones. He keeps quoting Old Testament

  179. prophets

  180. and then he'll say this was to fulfill

  181. what they said. But then I go back and I

  182. read the original prophet and I'm like,

  183. "Wow, that doesn't look at all what I

  184. would expect to find." What I would

  185. expect to find in the first one with the

  186. virgin shall conceive is that there'd be

  187. a passage that says when Messiah comes

  188. will be conceived of a virgin and the

  189. quote when it talks about uh a ruler

  190. coming from Judah. I would expect it to

  191. all be about the Messiah and where's

  192. going to happen in hundreds of years

  193. being born in Bethlehem. But I find out

  194. it it deals a lot with a lot of things

  195. current and Mike is gay. When we read

  196. the part quoting Hosea 11:1, we did a

    Hosea 11:1

  197. whole sermon out of Egypt. I called my

  198. son. You're expecting a passage that

  199. says, "Well, after the baby's born,

  200. he'll spend some time in Egypt to come

  201. out." And again, it's not exactly what

  202. you find. And when we get to the passage

  203. about Rachel weeping for her children, I

  204. I go back, I read it and expecting to

  205. say that all the babies are going to be

  206. killed when Messiah is born. But that's

  207. not what we find in the text. And then

  208. we come to this part that appears that

  209. abundance of prophets said that Jesus

  210. would be born in Nazareth. What's

  211. interesting is even in the New

  212. Testament, it's noted no prophet arises

  213. from Galilee. And the Nazareth was

  214. They didn't expect the Messiah to come

  215. from Natalie.

  216. But Matthew's original audience was not

  217. stupid. In fact, Matthew's original

  218. audience knew the Old Testament

  219. frontwards and backwards. They went

  220. through the reading of the Tanakh every

  221. three years in the synagogue. There was

  222. daily readings, there was weekly

  223. readings, and they would read through

  224. it. They they heard these words again

  225. and again and again.

  226. Matthew, if he was trying to pull the

  227. wool over their eyes, would not succeed

  228. because they were a very biblically

  229. literate people. And here's the problem

  230. with us. We're not as Old Testament

  231. believers. When new believers get saved,

  232. what do we tell them? We say, "Well,

  233. start in Matthew or start in John or

  234. start in Mark and read the New

  235. Testament." And we come and there's

  236. certain things from this that every baby

  237. Christ should be able to quickly derive.

  238. Jesus was born in a supernatural way.

  239. was born of a virgin.

  240. He was to be born in Bethlehem as he

  241. was.

  242. He was um that he went down into Egypt

  243. to escape the wrath of a man king. That

  244. that uh there was there was weeping that

  245. went on when that king killed a bunch of

  246. babies in the town that he was born in.

  247. And that finally his family by the

  248. dictates of the angel Lord moved to

  249. Nazareth where he would be raised. And

  250. that satisfies our curiosity about the

  251. earliest life of Jesus. We sure feel

  252. like know a lot more between 12 and 30,

  253. but God didn't satisfy that curiosity.

  254. But he just gives us some history. Mark

  255. skips over all of this and goes right to

  256. the beginning of his ministry. And John

  257. starts way earlier. He starts before

  258. creation showing that Jesus is actually

  259. God. But Matthew does something very

  260. different. He quotes these Old Testament

  261. passages. And I submit to you that he

  262. wants his audience to go back and read

  263. them and see a connection. And when they

  264. do, you're going to see something in

  265. common in all of them. All of them have

  266. something to do with the children of

  267. Israel being taken into captivity by the

  268. Assyrians in 721 BC or the restoration

  269. to the land. It has something to do with

  270. Israel. Let me explain the term Israel.

  271. Israel in different context in the Bible

  272. can mean different For example, it's the

  273. name of Jacob after it gets changed by

  274. the angel of the Lord. Jacob wrestles

  275. with the angel of the Lord and the Lord

  276. redeems him from evil and he changes his

  277. name from Jacob to Israel.

  278. One who repents of God or one who

  279. strives with God. Jacob ends up having

  280. 12 sons and those 12 sons originally are

  281. called the sons of Israel but eventually

  282. they become the 12 tribes of Israel and

  283. then further down they're just called

  284. Israel. All of Israel goes out to fight

  285. battles together.

  286. They go into the promised land under

  287. Joshua. They're divided up under their

  288. inheritance and eventually they want a

  289. king like all the other nations. And so,

  290. uh, God brings a man named Saul from the

  291. tribe of Benjamin. And he appoints him

  292. as a king over all of Israel, all 12

  293. tribes.

  294. And Saul is not a very faithful king.

  295. And so God says, I reject you as being

  296. king. I'm going to take a man after my

  297. own heart, a man you know by the name of

  298. David. I'm going to take him from being

  299. a shepherd to shepherd my people Israel.

  300. And here's this analogy of shepherd.

  301. shepherd over the people of Israel. Now,

  302. Israel is used of the co and David is

  303. the shepherd of his people Israel. David

  304. has a son named Solomon who becomes the

  305. king over all of Israel. But what

  306. happens to Solomon? Well, Solomon, he

  307. starts out great, builds the temple of

  308. the Lord. God grants him great wisdom.

  309. But he loves many foreign wives and they

  310. take his heart after false gods and he

  311. builds up high places to the false gods

  312. and he becomes unfaithful in his latter

  313. years. And when he does, God says, "I'm

  314. going to take from your son, not in your

  315. lifetime, your son's lifetime. I'm going

  316. to take 10 tribes from you, but I'm

  317. going to leave you. I'm going to leave

  318. you a little bit, a little bit of Levi

  319. and Benjamin and Judah. The house of

  320. David would rule over the southern

  321. kingdom. The kingdom would become

  322. divided in the next generation between

  323. someone

  324. and the other 10 tribes would go under a

  325. man named Jeroboam. So now you've got

  326. the southern kingdom known as the

  327. kingdom of Judah and the northern

  328. kingdom known as the kingdom of Israel.

  329. And from there on out, when you speak of

  330. Israel, it's almost always talking about

  331. the northern kingdom until Christ comes.

  332. The northern kingdom was under a man,

  333. Jeroboam, who were fearful that the

  334. people would go back to Judah. And so he

  335. set up idols in the north calves. And he

  336. said all the people could come up here

  337. to worship these cavs instead of going

  338. down to Jerusalem and going to the

  339. temple of Solomon. And that began the

  340. apostasy of Israel. And over the next

  341. several hundred years from from uh you

  342. know David Solomon's temple was built

  343. about 104 BC and up until the 700s there

  344. are two kingdoms the kingdom of Israel

  345. and the kingdom of Judah and there are

  346. prophets that are sent to both and they

  347. prophesy to them because they're all

  348. God's people and God loves them. But the

  349. northern tribes of Israel constantly

  350. fall into idolatry.

  351. worship, astro worship, mole, worshiping

  352. all these false gods, sexual immorality.

  353. And so the prophets go and they say,

  354. "Return to the Lord. Be faithful to the

  355. Lord." He said, "You're you're like an

  356. adulterous woman." He calls him a

  357. And he says, "You're going after false

  358. gods. You're breaking the covenant. The

  359. Lord God's a jealous God. Come back to

  360. the Lord." But they it's there's no good

  361. in northern Israel. It's just bad.

  362. Now in the southern king of Judah, the

  363. descendants of David are on the thrones

  364. and some of them are good and some of

  365. them are bad and some of they fall into

  366. idolatry and then a prophet will rise

  367. and they'll repent and they'll come back

  368. to the Lord. And so there's this back

  369. and forth relationship whereas Israel is

  370. continually committing what God calls

  371. spiritual adultery, idolatry. And then

  372. in the south in Judah, sometimes they're

  373. faithful and sometimes they're not. And

  374. this goes right on up until the 700s.

  375. And in the 700s, God finally says to

  376. Israel, he's going to divorce them and

  377. he's going to take them into captivity.

  378. And a group of people known as the

  379. Assyrians come and they besiege,

  380. northern Israel, and they put hooks in

  381. their noses. They play their king a lie.

  382. They rip his skin off. They take the

  383. people off into captivity and they are

  384. dispersed

  385. into the lands of the Assyrians.

  386. The kingdom of Judah will last about

  387. another hundred years and then they too

  388. will be taken into captivity by another

  389. nation, the Babylonians.

  390. But but in the the first way, men like

  391. Isaiah and Hosea, they warn they want

  392. Micah warned that this is going to come

  393. upon Israel. the children of Israel, the

  394. northern kingdom are going to be taken

  395. in to captivity.

  396. 100 years later, a prophet by the name

  397. prophesies and he will warn that Judah

  398. is going to go away into captivity. And

  399. all of these prophecies that we read

  400. here have something to do with this

  401. carrying away into Babylon because the

  402. people have been unfaithful.

  403. And Jesus in the book of Matthew will

  404. talk about his mission being

  405. he to the lost sheep of the house of

  406. Israel. Say it multiple times in the

  407. book of Matthew. So I want to give you a

  408. couple of them before I get into these

  409. verses here. The first one I want to

  410. look at is he sends the 12 disciples out

  411. all over Galilee, which is where Israel

  412. was. Galilee where Jesus ministry is.

  413. where the northern tribes have been.

  414. Jesus will grow up in the land where

  415. Israel have been. He says, "These 12

  416. Jesus sent out instructing them, go

  417. nowhere among the Gentiles and enter no

  418. town of the Samaritans, but go rather to

  419. the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

  420. Now, notice he calls them sheep. And

  421. what we're going to look at in these

  422. topics is he talks about God talks about

  423. raising up a righteous shepherd.

  424. Speaking of Christ, the righteous

  425. shepherd who's going to gather the lost

  426. of the house in Egypt and he's going to

  427. bring them back. Then again in Matthew

  428. 15 I could quote others in the book of

  429. Matthew but I'm trying to tell you this

  430. is a theme in the book of Matthew.

  431. Matthew 15 it says and Jesus went away

  432. from there and withdrew to the district

  433. of Sidon and the oldest woman from the

  434. region came out and was crying. Have

  435. mercy on me oh lord son of David my

  436. daughter is severely oppressed by a

  437. demon but he did not answer a word and

  438. his disciples came and begged him saying

  439. her away for she is crying out after us.

  440. He answered, "I was not I was sent only

  441. to the lost of the house of Israel."

  442. Again, he phrase the lost of the house

  443. of Israel. In chapter nine, he'll be

  444. looking he's ministering up in northern

  445. Israel where Israel had been. He's

  446. ministering to the multitude. And what

  447. does he see them as? He sees them in

  448. Matthew 9 as as sheep without a

  449. shepherd. As sheep without a shepherd.

  450. And so Jesus has a longing for the lost

  451. sheep of house of Israel. And during his

  452. three years of ministry, he wasn't he

  453. wasn't going to Gentiles. He wasn't

  454. going outside of Israel. His key focus

  455. was

  456. gathering together the lost sheep of the

  457. house of Israel. His main ministry was

  458. in

  459. up north in the northern tribes. Every

  460. one of these quotes that are quoted has

  461. something to do with the dispersion of

  462. Israel. But see, kind of complicated,

  463. but let's get into um our text again.

  464. And first of all, let's look back at the

  465. first one in Matthew 1:22. This is our

    Matthew 1:22

  466. first quote. And this took place to

  467. fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the

  468. prophet. Behold, the virgin shall

  469. conceive and bear a son. And they shall

  470. call his name Emmanuel, which means God

  471. with us. When Joseph woke from sleep, he

  472. did as the angel Lord commanded him and

  473. took his wife, but knew her not until he

  474. had given birth to a son. And he called

  475. his name Jesus. So Jesus was not born of

  476. both a father and a mother but a woman

  477. only. The Holy Spirit overshadowed her

  478. was conceiving her of the Holy Ghost. He

  479. talked about it again and again. And he

  480. says this was done to fulfill what was

  481. spoken by Isaiah the prophet. Now let's

  482. look at that passage in Isaiah. Let's

  483. see what it says. Now at this time let

  484. me tell you a little background earlier

  485. in the chapter. This king of Judah, the

  486. southern king is up is is worried

  487. because the northern king of Israel and

  488. Syria are partnering together and

  489. they're going to come around and attack

  490. him. He's worried about it. He's he's

  491. he's concerned about it.

  492. And so this name is King Ahab. Again,

  493. the Lord spoke to Ahaz, "Ask the sign of

  494. the Lord your God. Let it be deep as

  495. steel or as high as heaven." Ahaz said,

  496. "I will not ask and I will not put the

  497. Lord to the test." And he said, "Here

  498. then, oh house of Israel. Is it too

  499. little for you to weary me that you

  500. weary my God also? Therefore, the Lord

  501. himself will give you a sign. Behold,

  502. the virgin shall conceive and bear a son

  503. and shall call his name Emanuel." That's

  504. where we like to stop because we don't

  505. want to preach long sermons like this.

  506. We just want to move along in the text.

  507. And we stop there and we say, "See, he

  508. prophesied that the Messiah born of a

  509. virgin. I don't know. But the context,

  510. we're gonna be honest. We got to read

  511. the context. Verse 15. He shall eat

  512. courage and honey when he knows how to

  513. refuse the evil and choose the good. For

  514. before the boy knows how to refuse the

  515. evil and choose the good. The land two

  516. things you dread will be deserted. The

  517. Lord will bring upon you and upon your

  518. people and upon your father's house such

  519. days have not come since the day that

  520. Ephraim departed from Judah. the king of

  521. Assyria. So see what he does is in the

  522. next chapter what he says is he says the

  523. virgin's going to conceive

  524. going to have a child and before the

  525. child knows knows really what good food

  526. is and what bad food is the king of

  527. Assyria is going to come and defeat your

  528. enemies up there in Israel in Syria who

  529. have joined together. It's going to

  530. happen before it's going to happen. So

  531. the miracle sign from their standpoint

  532. is that a child's going to be born and

  533. his enemies are going to be defeated

  534. before the child is even of an age that

  535. they know what good and bad food is.

  536. Well, that's not near the sign as a he

  537. said the signs high in heaven or low in

  538. hell. Not a very impressive sign really.

  539. It's it's a true prophecy, but it's not

  540. that amazing of a sign that you predict

  541. that the Assyrians will come and destroy

  542. them. And nevertheless, it is fulfilled.

  543. We read about it fulfillment in the next

  544. chapter 8. And I went to the prophet.

  545. Oh, so Isaiah went into the prophet.

  546. Okay. To his wife. And she conceived and

  547. bore a son. Then the Lord said to me,

  548. call man Hash for the boy knows how to

  549. cry my father or my mother. the wealth

  550. of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria

  551. will be carried away before the king of

  552. Assyria. So on one hand Jesus's birth

  553. doesn't seem to have anything to do with

  554. Assyria, right? But on the other hand,

  555. there's nothing very miraculous about

  556. Isaiah going into his wife and

  557. conceiving a son. And not only that, his

  558. name is Mary Hashil.

  559. Uh and yet it's cited here if we read on

  560. in the text was the one of the Emanuel

  561. prophets

  562. disappointing fulfillment a burden in he

  563. said ask a sign something really high in

  564. heaven like you know the sun stands

  565. still or open up the earth and and

  566. swallow people alive that would be

  567. impressive but the sign is fulfilled

  568. when a woman by natural means continues

  569. the sun is born

  570. outside

  571. and uh and then by the time the child of

  572. a certain age comes and conquers their

  573. enemies that is what scholars will tell

  574. you is the fulfillment of the prophecy

  575. but it's not a very I wouldn't call it a

  576. fulfillment they call it a fulfillment

  577. Jesus is the great deliverer who is born

  578. of a virgin and and his birth his birth

  579. is is truly to defeat Israel's greatest

  580. enemy but it's not it's uh the original

  581. fulfillment was about the Assyrians

  582. taking Israel into captivity

  583. and Israel are the people that Jesus is

  584. going to reather from the nations and

  585. save them. So that is the context of

  586. this original. Now originally I had a

  587. picture of of the the wall that

  588. had he comes back from defeating

  589. northern Israel and he puts it on the

  590. wall. You can look it up yourself. it

  591. just didn't work that it didn't really

  592. fit on the screen or whatever the

  593. picture it didn't work for some reason

  594. on my my iPad but through the bad relief

  595. of Israel being brought before Kingb and

  596. the the Assyrians are proud of their

  597. torturing the Israelites and the king is

  598. there doing his oasis before them and

  599. and it shows it shows the horror that

  600. northern Israel would suffer because of

  601. their breaking of covenant with Israel

  602. and They were dispersed and sent off to

  603. other countries and they would no longer

  604. inhabit the land. Some would return at

  605. various times, but as a whole, they were

  606. taken off to other nations and and it it

  607. was fulfilled just as Isaiah said. Now,

  608. let's go on to Matthew chapter 2. I'll

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  609. quickly read what leads up to it, the

  610. context, but I'm going to really focus

  611. on these five scriptures. Not Jesus was

  612. born in Bethlehem in the days of the

  613. king. The old wise men from the east

  614. came to Jerusalem saying, "Where is he

  615. who has been born king of the Jews? For

  616. he saw a star when it rose and had come

  617. to worship him." When the king heard

  618. this, he was troubled and all Jerusalem

  619. with him. And assembling all the chief

  620. priests and scribes of the people,

  621. inquired of them where Christ is to be

  622. born. They told him in Bethlehem of

  623. Judea for so it is written by the

  624. prophet and you Bethlehem in the land of

  625. Judah are by no means least among the

  626. rulers of Judah for you shall come a

  627. ruler who will shepherd my people

  628. Israel. Again this reference to the king

  629. being a shepherd of the people of

  630. Israel. The king is like a shepherd of

  631. the sheep and Jesus was born in

  632. Bethlehem and Jesus is the good

  633. shepherd. So that is clearly taken. But

  634. let's go and look at the context. of

  635. Micah real quick. Micah chapter 5. This

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  636. is the one who prophesied it

  637. back in at the same time he's

  638. contemporary of Isaiah. So around about

  639. the time of the Assyrian invasion,

  640. but he's prophesying to Judah. Now your

  641. troops, daughter of truth, siege is laid

  642. against them. With a rod, they strike

  643. the judge of Israel on the tree. But

  644. you, oh Beth Africa, who are too little

  645. to be among the Judah, from you shall

  646. come forth from one who is to be ruler

  647. of Israel, whose turning forth is from

  648. old from ancient days. Right? The Hebrew

  649. says from everlasting

  650. everlasting. Therefore, he shall give

  651. them up until the time when he who is in

  652. labor has given birth. Then the rest of

  653. his brothers shall return to the people

  654. of Israel. And he shall stand and

  655. shepherd his flock in the strength of

  656. the Lord. And the majesty in the name of

  657. the Lord is God. And they shall dwell

  658. secure. For now he shall be great to the

  659. ends of the earth. And he shall be. When

  660. the Assyrian comes into our land and

  661. trees in our houses, then we will rise

  662. against him

  663. princes of men. They shall the land of

  664. Assyria with the sword and land of

  665. Nimrod at its entrance. and he said,

  666. "Deliver us from the Assyrian when he

  667. comes into our land and within our

  668. border." Now, wait a minute here. That's

  669. talking again about a contemporary,

  670. somebody that's about to come on the

  671. scene. And and some even even Jews

  672. believe this is a messianic prophecy.

  673. They just don't think it's been

  674. fulfilled yet. But there's a there's a

  675. sense in which um

  676. there's a there's a sense in which it

  677. applies to

  678. to to Hezekiah. Hezekiah was besieged by

  679. the Assyrians. And God would would

  680. deliver Hezekiah from the Assyrians, but

  681. there's no record of Hezekiah being born

  682. in Bethlehem. And Hezekiah, his going

  683. forth isn't from eternity, from

  684. everlasting as the prophet said. And so

  685. there's something that fits Hezekiah,

  686. but there's something that doesn't

  687. Hezekiah. It's a partial fulfillment in

  688. Hezekiah, but it points to a greater

  689. fulfillment in Christ. Who deliver his

  690. people. He would save the people from

  691. what? Their sin. He's a greater deliver.

  692. He came for a greater deliverance. But

  693. again, there's this association with the

  694. Assyrians and the carrying away of the

  695. of the children of Israel into

  696. captivity. Now, this becomes more

  697. relevant as we go on. Um I'll skip on

  698. down in the text to um

  699. Matthew. Matthew.

  700. So the the wise men meet Herod. They go

  701. to they go to Bethlehem. They come to

  702. him. They worship him. And and then when

  703. they leave, they're warned to depart.

  704. And it says in in Matthew 2:13, "Now

    Matthew 2:13

  705. when they have departed, behold, an

  706. angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in

  707. a dream and said, "Rise, take the child

  708. and his mother and flee to Egypt, and

  709. remain there until I tell you, for Herod

  710. was about to search for the child to

  711. destroy him. And he rose and took the

  712. child and his mother by night and

  713. departed to Egypt and remained there

  714. until the death of Herod. This was to

  715. fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the

  716. prophet out of Egypt I called my son.

  717. Now two weeks ago I did a whole

  718. and how we see that that just as uh

  719. Israel was called out of Egypt was

  720. called out of Egypt.

  721. Just as Egypt, Israel was baptized in

  722. the Red Sea, Jesus was baptized in the

  723. Jordan. And just as Israel was tested

  724. for 40 years in the wilderness, Jesus

  725. was tested for 40 days. But whereas

  726. Israel failed to keep the covenant and

  727. Israel was faithless, Jesus was the

  728. faithful son. What do we not find? We

  729. don't find a prophecy that says that the

  730. Messiah after birth is going to take a

  731. little trip to Egypt. Instead, we find

  732. more references to the Assyrians. Hosea

  733. 11 verse one. When Israel was a child, I

  734. loved him and out of Egypt I called my

  735. son. That's the quotation. It's clear

  736. it's not the Messiah, but it's actually

  737. the children of Israel. And Matthew is

  738. quoting it to set up a compar.

  739. They kept sacrificing the bales and

  740. burning offerings to idols. Yet it was I

  741. who taught them freedom to walk. I took

  742. them up by their arms, but they did not

  743. know that I healed them. I led them with

  744. cords of kindness with demons of love.

  745. And I became to them as one who eases

  746. the yolk on their jaws and bent down to

  747. them and fed them. They shall not return

  748. to the land of Egypt, but Assyria shall

  749. be their king because they have refused

  750. to return to me. The sword shall rage

  751. against their cities. Consume the to

  752. their gate and devour them because of

  753. their own transfer. Hosea says, "You

  754. know what? You're like a son to me. I

  755. brought you out of Egypt. I took care of

  756. you. But no matter what, you kept going

  757. back to the veils. You went back to the

  758. idols. You you fell into sexual

  759. immorality. You turned from the Lord.

  760. You didn't obey my laws and my statutes.

  761. And the result is what? You're going to

  762. be carried away by an Assyrian king into

  763. captivity."

  764. So, everyone so far we had a comparison.

  765. relation to the captivity of Israel.

  766. Hope you're still following me. All

  767. right. So, let's see the next one. Going

  768. back to Matthew

  769. in Herod when he saw that he had been

  770. tricked by the wise men became furious.

  771. And he sent and killed all the male

  772. children of Bethlehem in all the region

  773. who were two years old and under

  774. according to the time that he had

  775. ascertained from the wise men. Then was

  776. fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet

  777. Jeremiah. A voice heard in Rama weeping

  778. in loud lamentation Rachel weeping for

  779. her children she refused to be comforted

  780. because they are no more all right so

  781. it's like wow so

  782. out of fear that this king is going to

  783. take his job has all the babies in

  784. Bethlehem killed two years and under

  785. we've already talked about this Herod

  786. was an Edomite and just like Esau

  787. wanted to to kill Jacob. So now Herod

  788. wants to kill the Messiah, the baby

  789. Jesus, the Israel of God. That's what

  790. he's after. And it's an Arabic

  791. quotation. All this was to fulfill what

  792. was spoken by the prophet. So you think,

  793. "Oh, okay. So if I go back and read

  794. Jeremiah somewhere, it's going to

  795. prophesy that a bunch of babies are

  796. going to be killed just like they were

  797. killed in Egypt and and various other

  798. things in the Old Testament." But alas,

  799. that's not what we find when we look at

  800. Jeremiah 31. We something something more

  801. than that. And once again, something to

  802. do with the captivity in Assyria.

  803. Jeremiah 31:15, thus says the Lord, a

    Jeremiah 31:15

  804. voice is heard in rain, a lamentation,

  805. and bitter weeping. Rachel is weeping

  806. for her children. She refuses to be

  807. comforted for her children because they

  808. are no more. Thus says the Lord, keep

  809. your voice from weeping and your eyes

  810. from fear. For there's a reward for your

  811. work, declares the Lord. And

  812. shall come back to their own country. So

  813. early here in the text it associates why

  814. is Rachel weeping for children because a

  815. come and

  816. why why is Matthew quoting he wants his

  817. audience go back and read these

  818. prophecies these prophecies prophesy the

  819. reathering of Israel which is exactly

  820. what Jesus has come to do he's come to

  821. reathering the west back to save them

  822. and to bring them back and he's already

  823. so Jeremiah 31 prophesies the reathering

  824. of Israel after they were taken away.

  825. Very famous later in the chapter. I'm

  826. skipping a lot of verses in Jeremiah

  827. real quick. I'm skipping all the way

  828. from 17 down to 31. You'll know these

  829. verses. Most of you will know these

  830. verses. The old days are coming,

  831. declarant

  832. of Israel and the house of Judah. Not

  833. like the covenant that I made with their

  834. fathers on the day when I took them by

  835. the hand to bring them out of the land

  836. of Egypt. my covenant that they broke,

  837. the lie was with the lie was their

  838. husband, declares the Lord. He says,

  839. "You know what? You never kept the

  840. covenant." He actually divorced them in

  841. Isaiah or in Hosea. He divorced them. He

  842. says, "I'm divorcing you. I'm sending

  843. you away." But now he says, "I'm going

  844. to make a new covenant with you. It's

  845. not going to be like the old covenant.

  846. It's going to be a new covenant." And

  847. Hebrews 8 quotes this passage, which I

  848. won't go to it for length sake.

  849. But look now with me next verse 33. For

  850. this is the covenant that I will make

  851. with the house of Israel after those

  852. days.

  853. I will put my law within them and I will

  854. write it on their heart and I will be

  855. their God and they shall be my people

  856. and no longer shall each one teach his

  857. neighbor and each one his brother saying

  858. know the Lord for they shall all know me

  859. from the least of them to the greatest

  860. declares the Lord. For I will forgive

  861. their iniquity and I will remember their

  862. sin no more. The same chapter that talks

  863. about Rachel weeping because the taken

  864. into captes a new and better covenant

  865. and this is what we call the new

  866. testament.

  867. So this quotation Matthew doing this

  868. deliberately is prophesying the new

  869. covenant. The Messiah has shown up to

  870. keep the new covenant to go after the

  871. lost sheep of the house of Israel. Every

  872. time we talk about we take communion, we

  873. remember this new covenant. This is the

  874. new covenant in my blood.

  875. And what does that what does that infer?

  876. That means that even the Gentiles from

  877. all the nations

  878. are graciously included in this new

  879. covenant.

  880. Jesus in his ministry goes only to the

  881. land of Israel. His ministry is based up

  882. north where Israel has been. He also

  883. preaches in Judah some but he preaches

  884. to the Jews and he preaches to the house

  885. of Judah and house of Israel. But his

  886. intent was always to include the nations

  887. in this new covenant with the house of

  888. Israel. If we don't do the study and go

  889. back to the quotes and look at the

  890. context, we we're missing one of the

  891. greater meanings that Matthew is laying

  892. down with this new covenant. It's no

  893. longer about race. It's about grace. And

  894. all of us are included in it because the

  895. good shepherd is after she not just from

  896. Israel, but from all nations.

  897. If you're a backslider like Israel, if

  898. you're an idoler like Israel, if you're

  899. a homosexual, if you're If you're

  900. promiscuous, if you're a drunkard, if

  901. you're an idoltor, if you're vain, if

  902. you're arrogant, if you're a jerk, Jesus

  903. Christ came to save lost sheep.

  904. He came to bring the rebellious sheep,

  905. which Isaiah 53 says, "All we like sheep

  906. have gone astray, and the Lord has laid

  907. on him the iniquity of us all." These

  908. quotes were intended for the evil reader

  909. and say, "Jesus has come to after the

  910. lost sheep of the house of Israel. And

  911. multiple times in the book of of

  912. Matthew, he uses that phrase. I'm here

  913. for the lost sheep of the house of

  914. Israel. Having died for our sins though,

  915. now he commissiones his disciples to go

  916. in to all nations,

  917. to all people, to rebellious sons and

  918. daughters of Aram all over the world.

  919. But the new covenant is prophesied in

  920. this chapter about

  921. Rachel weeping for her children. She in

  922. context Rachel Rachel had given birth to

  923. her son who would be named by his father

  924. Benjamin. But remember remember what she

  925. called her son she called her son Doni

  926. son of my sorrow. She died giving birth

  927. to Benjamin and she named him son son

  928. son son son son son son son son son son son son son son son son son son son of

  929. my sorrow but but the father say no no

  930. no I'm not going to name it son of my

  931. sorrow so he named him Benjamin son of

  932. my right hand and uh Benjamin would

  933. would be taken later in captivity and

  934. restored but the apostles was of the

  935. tribe of Benjamin and and just the

  936. illusion of Jeremiah is Rachel's all of

  937. her children are gone into captivity.

  938. But the context of Matthew is yet again

  939. another tragedy more groaning. The

  940. babies are killed by its back to

  941. remeance all the times where Satan has

  942. tried to kill the woman has tried to

  943. kill the Messiah, tried to kill the

  944. lion, the Messiah, and it's another

  945. failure because he escaped to Egypt. All

  946. right. Now, here's the final one. This

  947. is this is an old text here. We haven't

  948. read this yet.

  949. it will be called a Nazarene. Matthew

    Matthew 2:19

  950. 2:19, but when the angel of the Lord

  951. appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,

  952. saying, "Rise, take the child and his

  953. mother and go to the land of Israel. For

  954. those who sought the child's wife are

  955. dead." And he rose and took the child

  956. and his mother and went to the land of

  957. Israel. But when he heard that Archelaus

  958. was reigning over Judea in place of his

  959. father, he was afraid to go there. And

  960. being warned in a dream, he withdrew to

  961. the district of Galilee. And he went and

  962. lived in a city called Nazareth, so that

  963. what was spoken by the prophet might be

  964. fulfilled, that he would be called the

  965. Nazarene. Now, all the other ones said

  966. that it might be fulfilling what was

  967. spoken by the prophet. But here's

  968. perhaps very little lots of prophecies

  969. in the Old Testament that says the

  970. Messiah is going to live in Nazareth.

  971. And

  972. then guess what? Not a single one,

  973. not a single Old Testament prophet says,

  974. "He shall be called a Nazarene." Now,

  975. the other one, they had at least a very

  976. definitive text that that you could go

  977. to and and and look at it and read it

  978. and read it context. But this one, he

  979. said something strange. He says, "The

  980. prophet who shall be called a Nazarene."

  981. Why would you use prophets in the world

  982. when there's not

  983. That's a very

  984. you're expecting somewhere and a lot of

  985. people stumble over this like wow he

  986. says it the Jews today say well he's

  987. just making stuff up now he's just

  988. making up it didn't happen some people

  989. say well maybe it was an oral topic

  990. which is a legitimate explanation it

  991. could have been somebody

  992. but but apparently it was something that

  993. was well known if it was oral but that

  994. produces a problem because when

  995. Nicodemus tries to speak up for Jesus

  996. among the are you a

  997. Don't you know that no prophet arises

  998. from Galilee? In other words, there's no

  999. prophet coming from Galilee. Jesus is

1000. from an area where there's no we're not

1001. we're looking for him to come from

1002. Bethlehem. We're not looking for him to

1003. come from Galilee or Nazareth. Nazareth

1004. within Galilee. And yet Matthew says he

1005. shall be called a Nazarene. What is

  1006. going on here?

1007. Well, the word Nazarene is a puns

1008. like Hebrew word which is the word for

1009. and there's multip lot of prophecies

1010. that refer to the messiah as the bridge

1011. and it sounds like the word so it's a

  1012. word it's I wouldn't quite say it lime

1013. but it's it brings me sounds like the

1014. Hebrew word for branch and we have a

1015. very specific verse where it's the true

1016. ina 11 verse one there shall come forth

1017. a shoot from the stump of Jesse and a

1018. branch a net there from his root shall

1019. bear fruit. Now, what's the picture

1020. here? Just the father of David. The

  1021. picture of the tree,

1022. it's been cut down and there's nothing

  1023. left.

1024. And you look at the sun, man, that was

1025. once a glorious tree and now it's just

1026. a branch is going to come out of that.

1027. And what's the word picture here? Well,

1028. Isaiah prophesied the destruction of the

1029. northern kingdom and also the prophecies

1030. of the destruction of the southern

1031. kingdom. And the of David would lie in

1032. so much so that one of David's

1033. descendants is a man named Joseph who's

1034. a carpenter in Galilee living in the

1035. northern where the northern tribes are

1036. and so it says there will come out of

1037. this stump there's going to come forth

1038. it looks like it's over for the house of

1039. David it looks like God is done with the

1040. line of David and the promises of David

1041. it looks like the divic covenant has

  1042. failed but he's saying no a branch a

1043. little going to grow up off of the side

1044. of that stump. And what's it going to

1045. do? Verse two, and the spirit of verse

1046. two, and the spirit of Yahweh shall rest

1047. upon him. That happens in chapter four,

1048. right? And the spirit of wisdom and

1049. understanding, the spirit of counsel and

1050. might, the spirit of knowledge and the

1051. fear of the Lord, and his delight shall

1052. be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not

1053. judge by what his eyes see, or decide

1054. dispute by what his ears hear, but with

1055. righteousness he shall judge the poor,

1056. and decide with equity for the meek of

1057. the earth. And he shall strike the earth

1058. with the rod of his mouth, and with the

1059. breath of his lips, he shall kill the

1060. wicked, speaking of his reign. So the

1061. word there means a branch, right? Uh

  1062. verse 11, I'm sorry, verse 10, Isaiah

    Isaiah 11:10

1063. 11:10. In that day, the root of Jesse,

1064. again, the house of David, the little

1065. Jesse, who shall stand as a signal for

1066. the peoples. Of him shall the nations

1067. inquire, and his resting place shall be

1068. glorious. And that day the Lord will

1069. extend his hand yet a second time to

1070. recover the remnant that remains of his

1071. people from Assyria, from Egypt, from

1072. Pathos, from Bush, from Elim, from

1073. Shina, from the coins of the sea. He

1074. will raise a signal for the nation and

1075. will assemble the banish of Israel and

1076. gather the dispersed from Judah from the

1077. four corners of the earth. The brill

1078. prophecy I can show you numerous ones in

1079. Zechariah and other have to do with with

1080. God raising from the house of David

1081. which has been laid waste a righteous

1082. branch who will gather his people back

1083. from the nation. He will gather them to

1084. all these other lands. He er the place

1085. he lifts all the places he will gather

1086. them and and uh what Matthew is

1087. signaling is this is what Jesus has come

1088. to do. He's come together. Now there are

1089. other branch prophecies and these often

1090. times I I could have gone through quite

1091. a few branch prophecies where the

1092. Messiah is called. I have another

1093. passage I want to go to but um this one

1094. is different. But it's still this idea

1095. of the Messiah being a branch that the

1096. awesome that what would make a king of

  1097. Judah live in

1098. that's that is what Matthew is pointing

1099. out. He's it's going to be unexpected.

1100. People going to think he's a Gilean

1101. because he doesn't come from where they

  1102. expect. And that that's that's a very

1103. clear point that Matthew was making but

1104. he's playing on words saying yes he was

1105. raised in Galilee because he's the

1106. branch that we've been looking for. He

  1107. comes

1108. This is the Messiah who's going to

1109. gather the lost people of the house of

1110. Israel and be a shepherd to them. The

1111. phrase shepherd is very important. So

1112. Jeremiah 23, we have more another branch

1113. here in this very important passage.

1114. Jeremiah 23, woe to the shepherds who

1115. destroy and scatter the sheep of my

  1116. pasture, declares Yahweh. Therefore,

1117. thus says Yahweh the God of Israel

1118. concerning the shepherds who care for my

1119. people. You have scattered my flock and

1120. have driven them away. you have not

1121. attended to them. Behold, I will attend

1122. I will attend to you for your evil

1123. deeds, declares the Lord. Then I will

1124. gather the remnant of my flock out of

1125. all the countries where I have driven

1126. them, and I will bring them back to

1127. their fold, and they shall be faithful

  1128. and multiply. So he's saying, I I am

1129. going to gather the sheep from all the

1130. countries where I have delivered them.

1131. For Jesus is Yahweh. And that's what

1132. Jesus came to do. Going on to verse

1133. four, I will set shepherds over them.

1134. care for them and they shall hear no

1135. more nor be dismayed. Neither shall any

1136. missing declares the Lord. Behold the

1137. days are coming, declares the Lord. When

1138. I will raise up for David a righteous

1139. and he shall reign in his king and be

1140. wisely and shall exeute justice and

1141. righteousness in the land in his days

1142. will be saved and Israel will dwell sec.

1143. And this is the man by which he shall be

1144. called Yahweh. The Lord is our

  1145. righteous.

1146. So when Matthew makes this rail play on

1147. words, he's calling instead of just

1148. trying instead of using up a lot of

1149. paper space, he he's alluding to all

1150. these numerous prophecies about the

1151. branch from Isaiah, Jeremiah. I could go

1152. into Zechariah, Zechariah 3, Zechariah

    Zechariah 6 chapter mention

1153. chapter 6 where the man called the

1154. branch was going to gather his people

1155. together. You learn lots of passages,

1156. but the big picture here is that number

1157. one, I want to point out that Jesus is

1158. referred to as a shepherd

1159. gathering his people and is referred to

1160. as the Lord our righteousness.

1161. Yahweh he shall be called the Lord our

1162. righteousness. Now, Jesus never called

1163. him in the New Testament by the name

1164. Hey, Yahweh, right? He never never he

1165. never, hey, where's that guy? Yahweh.

1166. He's not called that. But why does he

1167. say shall be called the Lord in our

1168. righteousness? Because that's what Jesus

  1169. came to do.

1170. To bear the sins of the sheep, to bear

1171. our iniquities in himself, to pay for

1172. the sins of his people, to pay for the

1173. sins of the lost sheep of the house of

1174. Israel. was a good shepherd who came to

1175. seek that which was lost to pay for

1176. their sins to reather them and restore

  1177. them.

1178. One more next passage in Jeremiah 23

1179. here next verse. Therefore, behold the

1180. days are coming because the Lord makes

1181. them no longer say as the Lord lived he

1182. brought up the people of Israel out of

1183. the land of Egypt. But as the Lord

1184. lives, he brought up and led the

1185. offspring of the house of Israel out of

1186. the north country and out of the country

1187. where they had driven them. Then shall

1188. they dwell in their own land. Here's

  1189. what's interesting.

1190. We What do we remember at the Lord's

1191. table? Do we remember what they

1192. remembered at Passover? What do they

1193. remember at Passover? They remember

1194. every year on Passover Jesus remember

1195. how God brought him out of the land of

1196. Egypt. God says, "When the branch gets

1197. here, when Yahweh came here, the Lord of

1198. righteousness gets here. When the good

1199. shepherd gets here, no longer are you

1200. going to be talking about your

1201. deliverance from Egypt, but you're going

1202. to be you're going to be referring to

1203. your gathering." I say, "Well, we don't

1204. do that, do we?" Yeah, we do. The word

1205. church, what does it mean?

  1206. You called out

1207. the word synagogue refers to gathering.

1208. Every time we talk about the church of

1209. Jesus Christ made that all the nations

1210. and all peoples, Jew and Gentile, we're

1211. talking about what Christ has done by

1212. sheep from every nation under heaven and

1213. gathering him unto himself. And so

1214. Matthew is calling to attention these

1215. prophecies that Jesus of the house of

1216. David the branch who grows up

1217. grows up in Nazareth. And what's the

1218. mission? The mission is to come to the

1219. house of Israel and now that and now

1220. that he's died for our sins

1221. the house of Israel. So I want to look

1222. at this final passage here in Matthew

1223. 15. I want to I already read half of it

1224. earlier. I want to read the other half

1225. of it. Matthew 15 and it was right at

1226. the center of the book. And Jesus went

1227. away from there and the dream of the

1228. district was tired and sight him. And

1229. behold, a Canaanite woman from that

1230. region came out and was crying, "Have

1231. mercy on me, O Lord, son of David. My

1232. daughter is severely oppressed by a

1233. demon." But he did not answer a word.

1234. And his disciples came and begged him,

1235. saying, "Send her away, for she is

1236. crying out after us." He answered, "I

1237. was sent only to the lost sheep of the

1238. house of Israel, for the of his

  1239. ministry. He said, "I don't I don't

  1240. know. That's not what I'm here for. I'm

1241. here for the lost sheep of the house of

1242. Israel. I'm here to fulfill the

1243. prophecies of Isaiah and Jeremiah that I

1244. would gather the lost sheep of house of

  1245. Israel together again. That's what I'm

  1246. here for.

1247. That's my job." And he's the language of

1248. sheep and house of Israel.

  1249. This woman, this Canaanite

1250. came and knelt before him, saying,

1251. "Lord, help me." And he answered, "It is

1252. not right to take the children's bread

1253. and throw it to the dog."

1254. That would deter you, right? Okay, man.

  1255. Do

  1256. she

  1257. even becomes fall?

1258. Then Jesus answered her, "Oh woman,

1259. your faith Let it be done for you if you

1260. desire and her daughter is healed

1261. instantly. Now some people saying wow

1262. Jesus was really insulted. I I think

1263. making the point here this woman

1264. wouldn't take no for an answer. Well

1265. yeah that's why her she's not one of us.

  1266. She's not an

1267. Even even the puppies even even the

1268. puppies get the the master table. She

1269. was humble. She tears just away in

1270. rejection. She said, "Yeah, it's almost

1271. like when when Jesus turns to his

1272. disciples, will you walk away also?" And

1273. they said, "Who else says the words of

  1274. life?" She says, "Her

1275. the bread from the master's table and

  1276. Jesus commended to her."

1277. Now Jesus was sent to the house of

  1278. Israel. But

1279. how does the book how does the book end?

1280. The book ends after Jesus having died

1281. for our sins and rose from the grave

1282. before he ascends into heaven. He gives

1283. permission to his disciples to go and

1284. teach all nations all families of

1285. baptize in the name of the father and of

1286. the son and of the holy spirit. Teach

1287. them observe all things I've commanded

  1288. you and learn.

1289. to the end of the age.

1290. So the the the ministry is no longer

1291. limited to an ethnic, an ethnicity, a

1292. people group. And I would guard as as a

1293. way of application here at the end of

1294. the sermon. I I would guard all

1295. Christians should be on guard against

1296. any form of ethnic hatred or despising a

1297. people because of their people group or

1298. their skin color, their ethnicity, their

1299. history. Jew or Gentile or Palestinian

  1300. for that matter.

1301. There is no other name under heaven

1302. given to men whereby they must be saved.

1303. Every Jew must come to the father

  1304. through Christ.

1305. Every Palestinian must come to the

1306. father through Christ. Every European,

1307. every American, every Latino, every

1308. every African. There's only one way to

1309. come to the father and it's through the

1310. good shepherd through David's life for

1311. the week to gather us together. Not not

1312. to leave us separated. One of the things

1313. that's relevant here is so many people

1314. right now even Christian people are

1315. getting off onto that we're getting so

  1316. caught up with ethnicity.

1317. Behold how beautiful the church is. What

1318. do you see on the day of Pentecost? You

1319. see Israelites from both captivity, Jews

1320. from every nation under heaven. They're

1321. coming up to offer gifts at the temple

1322. and the Holy Spirit has come upon the

1323. 120 in the upper room and they hear the

1324. gospel in their own language and they

1325. get saved and they believe. What is

  1326. that? That's the reathering

1327. of lost sheep of the house of Israel on

1328. the day of Pentecost. They're Jews from

1329. every nation under heaven. They're being

1330. brought to they're being brought to

1331. Jerusalem and they're being gathered

1332. back and What do you see a few chapters

1333. later? You see the Samaritans, half

1334. Jewish, half something else, half Greek,

1335. the enemies of Israel. And what happens?

1336. They get saved and filled with Holy

1337. Spirit and brought into Israel. And in a

1338. few chapters, we get into chapter 10.

1339. And Peter gets a vision that he's not to

1340. call any person on earth,

1341. but all who fear God

  1342. are welcome to God.

  1343. It's a major

1344. of the New Testament is Jesus came to

1345. save all nations. He's the good

1346. shepherd. The church is the godly union

1347. is a celebration of the good the new

1348. covenant that we read about in Jeremiah

  1349. 23.

1350. This is the new covenant with the house

1351. of Israel. And we're going to communion

1352. here in a few moments. And communion is

1353. a remembrance of this new covenant that

1354. we read about in Jeremiah 23 in the same

1355. chapter that has Rachel weeping for her

1356. children. And and what do we do when we

1357. come to the Lord's table? Well, we we

1358. remember the new covenant in his dwell.

1359. He's written his laws and our hearts

1360. into our minds. He says, "I will be

1361. their God. They shall be my people. And

1362. everyone shall know me from the least to

1363. the greatest. and their sins and their

1364. iniquity I will remember no more. That's

1365. what we come to the community table to

1366. remember. Now, if you have repented of

1367. your sins and put your faith in Jesus

  1368. Christ,

  1369. you're a participant in that new

1370. covenant. If you are still clinging to

1371. your idols and your sins and you've

1372. rejected Christ, well, you're not yet a

1373. member of the new covenant.

1374. We would we would ask you if you're yet

1375. to put your faith in Christ to

  1376. strengthen your

1377. to do. So now turn to the Lord Jesus

1378. Christ. Turn to him. Come to him. Come

  1379. to the good.

1380. He he has demonstrated himself to love

1381. lost you. If you want to come, then come

1382. and he will accept you.

1383. However, we ask you before you take your

1384. communion to be baptized. That's the

  1385. news and like a a wedding ceremony. It's

1386. where we make our public vows together.

1387. You done that yet. We ask you to do so.

1388. Uh but if you are a visitor here this

1389. morning and you trusted in the Lord

1390. Jesus Christ and you've been obedient to

1391. the community baptized, not saved by

1392. baptism. We're saved by trusting in

1393. Christ. Nevertheless, don't leave what

  1394. Jesus commanded undone.

1395. Be baptized. Do not believe and be

1396. baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

1397. Father, we thank you God that Jesus, the

1398. good shepherd, the Lord our

1399. righteousness, the branch of the

1400. hospital that has come. We are gathered

1401. together in his name, the name of Jesus,

1402. and we trust in Jesus. We thank you for

1403. the forgiveness of sins. We thank you,

1404. Lord, for the beautiful work that you're

1405. doing all over the world. That your your

1406. church is made of Jew and Gentile and

1407. male and female. It's been made as slave

1408. and bond and free. God, you you have one

1409. body. You broken down the dividing wall

1410. between us Jew and Gentiles to make us

1411. one new people of God. We rejoice in the

1412. Lord who is our shepherd. Father, I pray

1413. for anyone here today who wonders, have

1414. I too far? Have they gone too far? Lord,

1415. you demonstrate in these prophecies that

1416. it's your heart that every rebel return

1417. would turn to you that they would turn

1418. from their sins to the living God to be

1419. healed of their affliction, their

1420. spiritual affliction, and to be restored

1421. to those of you. I pray Lord that you
