  1. for me

  2. ups and downs emotionally

  3. quite appropriate some of the things

  4. that went on this week with this

  5. morning's text

  6. are you ready to meet the Lord

  7. I was thinking about this on Wednesday

  8. evening I'm hearing my daughter's

  9. symptoms

  10. that meant I didn't know what it meant.

  11. Symptoms of

  12. high blood pressure

  13. was another one. Headache migraines. My

  14. father's been having migraines for days.

  15. She's in the past of it. I didn't know

  16. about the blurry vision that happened

  17. Wednesday evening. Didn't know about the

  18. high blood pressure. Wouldn't have

  19. known. It was really providential that

  20. Kathy had given them a blood pressure

  21. test. And they thought, well, let's just

  22. check it just to see her blood pressure

  23. is skyh high. And I'm reading these

  24. things and you know possible outcomes.

  25. Wow.

  26. My daughter

  27. could die.

  28. my old daughter could die.

  29. And it's just, man, talk about emotional

  30. like a couple days emotional

  31. that that my daughter and my

  32. granddaughter

  33. could pass away.

  34. And and it's just it's it's very fitting

  35. to think about. It's very humbling. It's

  36. like, Lord, you don't owe me my

  37. daughter.

  38. You don't owe me grandchildren. You

  39. don't owe me another day. God does not

  40. owe us our loved ones.

  41. And I I told that to the Lord. I'm like,

  42. Lord, I don't want to be testing that. I

  43. I don't plan on turning my back on you

  44. if things don't go the way I want. But

  45. but God, I cry out, Lord. You're so

  46. gracious. I cry out to you, for my

  47. daughter and my granddaughter.

  48. And uh it's just a very humbling

  49. reminder that our our life is so

  50. fragile.

  51. We're all heartbeat away.

  52. before the judgement

  53. heart be

  54. and and every one of us believers and

  55. unbelievers need to think about being

  56. ready to meet the Lord. Now as an

  57. unbeliever

  58. the main issue is

  59. have you repented of your sins and put

  60. your faith in Jesus Christ? Are you

  61. trusting in him alone for your

  62. salvation?

  63. Not you are not ready to meet the Lord.

  64. not ready, but also as believers,

  65. are are we ready to go today in a second

  66. way? Are we are we ready to go in the

  67. sense of have you been living for the

  68. Lord? Have you been living for Jesus?

  69. Have you done all that you want to do

  70. for Jesus?

  71. I don't feel ready to meet the Lord.

  72. I want I want to I want to do something

  73. more for God.

  74. my time here for the Lord. I don't just

  75. want to have a nice life. I want I want

  76. to do something for God. Yes, I'm in

  77. fulltime ministry, but I don't I'm not

  78. ready yet. I don't I don't want to go

  79. not ready yet. I'm ready in the first.

  80. I'm ready to meet the Lord. I know who

  81. my savior is. I know my given, but I

  82. don't want to go before him. I wise men

  83. bring gifts when they meet the Lord.

  84. Right? We read that in the last chapter.

  85. The wise men bring gifts. When I

  86. Lord, I don't want to come empty-handed.

  87. I want to do things for you.

  88. So, as we look at the text this morning,

  89. we can think about getting ready for the

  90. Lord, ready to meet the Lord. That

  91. generation when John the Baptist is

  92. preaching, he's preparing people to meet

  93. the Messiah, the Savior, the Lord. He's

  94. telling them how to get ready. Messiah

  95. is coming. He's coming. You show up any

  96. day now. We don't know the time. He's

  97. going to show up. Are you ready to meet

  98. him?

  99. The point of this morning's text is

  100. repentance, confession of sin, and faith

  101. in Christ are essential to having peace

  102. with God. Let's all read God's word in

  103. Matthew 3.

  104. In those days, John the Baptist came

  105. preaching in the wilderness,

  106. repent,

  107. the kingdom of heaven is at for this is

  108. he who was spoken by the prophet Isaiah

  109. when he said, voice of one flying in the

  110. wilderness, prepare the way of the Lord,

  111. make his path straight. Now John wore a

  112. garment of hair and a leather belt

  113. around his waist and his food was broken

  114. and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all

  115. Judea and all the region about the

  116. Jordan were going out to him and they

  117. were baptized by him in the river Jordan

  118. confessing their sins. But when he saw

  119. many of the Pharisees and Sadducees

  120. coming to their baptism, he to them, you

  121. brought

  122. our father. For I tell you, God is able

  123. from these stones to raise up children

  124. to Abraham. Even the raised tree. Every

  125. tree therefore that does not bear good

  126. fruit is cut down and thrown into fire.

  127. I baptize you with water for repentance.

  128. But he who is coming after me is I

  129. sandals I am not worthy to carry. He

  130. will baptize you with the Holy Spirit

  131. and fire. His winnowing fork is in his

  132. hand. And he will clear his threshing

  133. floor and gather his wheat into the

  134. barn. But the chaff he will burn with

  135. unquenchable fire.

  136. I baptize you for

  137. Jesus came from the Jordan to be

  138. baptized by him. John would have

  139. prevented him saying I need to be

  140. baptized by you and you come to me. But

  141. Jesus answered him, "Let it be so th it

  142. is fitting for us to fulfill all

  143. righteousness." Then he consented. When

  144. Jesus was baptized, immediately he went

  145. up from the water. Behold, the heavens

  146. were open to him and he saw the spirit

  147. of God descending like a dove and coming

  148. to rest on him. Behold, a voice from

  149. heaven said, "This is my beloved son

  150. with whom I am well pleased." Oh Lord

  151. God, we thank you. The Lord Jesus Christ

  152. has come to fulfill all righteousness.

  153. God, you have made a highway, a way for

  154. us to come to you with joy. rejoicing,

  155. believing in the good news of the gospel

  156. that our sins can be washed away that we

  157. can come before you and have peace with

  158. you knowing that we are forgiven and

  159. that you love us and that you accept us

  160. in Christ Jesus.

  161. In Jesus name I pray. Amen. You may be

  162. seated.

  163. All right. So, as we've been going

  164. through the book of Matthew, I've

  165. highlighted that chapter one and chapter

  166. 2 have some things to them. The Torah

  167. are the first five books of the Bible.

  168. There's Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus,

  169. Numbers, and Deuteronomy. In Genesis,

  170. the word Genesis means

  171. in Matthew 1, we read about the origins

  172. of Jesus. We read about his genealogy

  173. and the word genealogy is in Greek

  174. genesis and we read about his birth also

  175. the word is genapis

  176. and there's a very strong theme in

  177. Genesis we read about the first Adam

  178. that brought sin into the world and his

  179. genealogy starts with the book of the

  180. book of the genesis Jesus, the last

  181. Adam, the one who comes to take away

  182. scene. In Exodus, Pharaoh kills all the

  183. babies. In Matthew chapter 2, Herod

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  184. kills babies. And in Exodus, God brings

  185. his children out of the land of Egypt.

  186. And we have this verse that says, "Out

  187. of Egypt, I have called my son." We also

  188. have a bunch of prophecies that talk

  189. about bringing the nations out of the

  190. far countries, a new exodus, bringing

  191. them the promised land. So this is a

  192. strong theme in Matthewapter 2. So the

  193. next book of the Torah is the book of

  194. Leviticus. And the book of Leviticus is

  195. means like it's a book for the priest

  196. and it's all about how can sinners

  197. approach a holy God. When God brings out

  198. the land of Egypt, he brings them to

  199. Mount Si and God's presence is manifest.

  200. There's fire on the mountain top and the

  201. people are terrified when they hear the

  202. law and they say we cannot approach God

  203. and God they are warned don't approach

  204. the mountain don't touch it it's too

  205. holy if you touch the mountain of God

  206. you will you will die and so God reveals

  207. himself in a very terrifying way God is

  208. holy we are not holy God is good we are

  209. not good is perfect we are sinners and

  210. the book of Leviticus is all about How

  211. can sinners, sinful people approach a

  212. holy God? How can we come into his

  213. presence? And God makes a way for them

  214. through

  215. a sacrificial system, through an

  216. atonement system whereby their sins can

  217. be forgiven. What do we see in

  218. Matthewap?

  219. a man named John the Baptist who as we

  220. learn in Luke is a descendant of the

  221. priest. And he's not in the temple. He's

  222. out in the wilderness.

  223. Why is that? Because presently the

  224. priests that are occupying the temple

  225. are a bunch of corrupt Sadducees who

  226. don't believe in angels. They don't

  227. believe in the supernatural. They don't

  228. believe in the resurrection. They're

  229. just kind of filling the office and

  230. getting rich off of it. Josephus tells

  231. us there was a group of people at that

  232. time called the

  233. out in the desert. The reason they were

  234. out in the desert was because they saw

  235. the priest as as so that they they they

  236. knew that they needed a new priest. They

  237. were looking for two messiahs. One to be

  238. a descendant of David and one to be a

  239. descendant of Levi. One to be a priest

  240. and one to be uh the son of David.

  241. Well, as I'll probably go into next

  242. week, Jesus is our new priest. But we

  243. have the last of these older priests and

  244. he's an exile. He's in the wilderness.

  245. He's not in the temple. He's not dressed

  246. in soft rain. He's dressed in camel

  247. hair. He's out in the wilderness and

  248. he's what is he doing? He'sapt.

  249. is where priests would go to get washed

  250. before they would attempt to enter

  251. God's presence. We see confessions of

  252. sin in Leviticus chapter 5. We see John

    Leviticus 5 chapter mention

  253. talking about confessing sin and it's

  254. it's a theme of how can these sinners

  255. approach a holy God. Well, John is from

  256. the old order of priests. He's preparing

  257. the road to meet the Messiah. He's

  258. telling the people, "This is how you get

  259. ready to meet the Messiah.

  260. Confess your sins,

  261. be baptized,

  262. repent,

  263. allow God to search your heart,

  264. and wait in expectation because Messiah

  265. is about to show up." That's the message

  266. of John the Baptist. So, let's look at

  267. it in verse one. In those days, John the

  268. Baptist came preaching in the wilderness

  269. of Judea. Repent for the kingdom of

  270. heaven is at hand. So John the Baptist,

  271. he's preaching in the wilderness. And

  272. his message is the kingdom of heaven is

  273. at hand. It's coming. They've been

  274. waiting in the prophets for the kingdom

  275. to come. I I mentioned few sermons ago.

  276. chapter 10 right now of Matthew chapter

  277. three. But the wise men, they had a

  278. timeline that said the messianic kingdom

  279. is going to show up and it showed them

  280. when in the Roman Empire. They they

  281. watched the timeline coming to pass over

  282. the last 500 years. The time is

  283. fulfilled.

  284. The kingdom of God is at hand.

  285. They've been waiting for it. And now

  286. John is saying it is here. The time is

  287. here. You have several different

  288. timeline from Messiah this 490 year

  289. period. They've come to the end of the

  290. 490 years. We're at the 483rd year. The

  291. last the last seven years are here.

  292. Those that know the book of Daniel know

  293. what I'm talking about. A lot of you may

  294. overhead. That's okay. But the point is

  295. God gave prophetic timelines and the

  296. time is fulfilled. And John the Baptist

  297. is saying

  298. because the kingdom of God is

  299. not at home because Jesus is the king

  300. and he's about to show up. That's the

  301. message of John the Baptist. It's also

  302. interesting that he's in the wilderness.

  303. Where was the tabernacle that they would

  304. make atonement? It was set up in the

  305. wilderness.

  306. What is he doing? He's calling out to

  307. them in the wilderness and he's telling

  308. them to repent. Repenta

  309. Greek word means to have a change of

  310. mind and heart. Change your way of

  311. thinking.

  312. Ask God to

  313. ask God to find out if there's ask God

  314. to there any idols that I'm

  315. there more than I love you.

  316. Is there anything that I can't live

  317. without? God cleanse me from my idols.

  318. He's telling them to repent and get

  319. ready.

  320. For this is he who was spoken of by the

  321. prophet Isaiah when he said the voice of

  322. him crying in the wilderness prepare the

  323. way of the Lord make his path.

  324. So Matthew quotes from Isaiah 40 and he

  325. says this is the fulfillment of that

  326. prophecy. The voice of one in the

  327. wilderness prepare the way of the Lord

  328. make his path straight. Now this um

  329. makes

  330. compared to a highway as we're going to

  331. see and and the highway worker what what

  332. do they do? Well they the trees that are

  333. in the way they got to remove the trees

  334. the hills that are in the way they got

  335. to bring the hills down. The valleys

  336. that are in the way they got to bring

  337. the valleys up. So you take the hills

  338. you put them in the valley. You make the

  339. road smooth. You prepare it. John the

  340. Baptist

  341. has a message for the crowd.

  342. The message of the crowd is

  343. you may be rich, you may be beautiful,

  344. you may be intelligent, you may have the

  345. praises of men, but you're going to die

  346. and you need to be ready to meet the

  347. Lord. And for the valleys, for the

  348. humble, for the people that feel like

  349. their life is worthless, they have

  350. nothing to live for. They feel like

  351. failures. They feel they they know

  352. they're sinners. He has a message, the

  353. good news. Christ came to pay for your

  354. sins. Christ came to make you again, to

  355. make you new again. And so, he has a

  356. message to the proud that brings them

  357. down. He has a message to the humble

  358. that lifts them up. He's preparing

  359. people to meet the Lord. This scripture

  360. that's quoted has a lot of interesting

  361. context. I want to look at the context

  362. in Isaiah chapter 40. Here's Isaiah 40

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  363. that's being quoted. A voice cries in

  364. the wilderness. Prepare the way of the

  365. Lord. Make straight in the desert a

  366. highway for our God. Every valley shall

  367. be lifted up and every mountain and hill

  368. shall be made low. The uneven ground

  369. shall become level and the rough places

  370. of plain and the glory of Yahweh is what

  371. all mean shall be revealed and all flesh

  372. shall see it together for the mouth of

  373. Yahweh has spoken. Now what's very

  374. interesting here is I told you that you

  375. got you got mentioned twice in Matthew.

  376. You got out of Egypt. Exodus alluded to

  377. very strongly in Matthew chapter 2. The

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  378. name for the book of Leviticus is uh and

  379. he called or

  380. taken from the first line of the book of

  381. Leviticus.

  382. the word the same root word is used here

  383. in the word ply a voice

  384. and then the next book numbers is also I

  385. find very interesting the name of the

  386. book of numbers in Hebrew means in the

  387. wilderness it's very fascinating that

  388. you've got an illusion to the title of

  389. the book of Leviticus and you got the

  390. name of the book of numbers in the next

  391. verses and we're going to see that theme

  392. continue on in Matthew

  393. and and and what's this voice doing?

  394. Write the book of Leviticus. It answers

  395. the question, how can approach a holy

  396. God? How can we unholy people, sinners,

  397. guilty sinners approach a God so holy

  398. and so righteous as Yahweh? And he's

  399. going to prepare the way. And so, uh,

  400. he's preparing the way for the for the

  401. Messiah to show up.

  402. More context. A voice cried says, "Cry."

  403. And I said, "What shall I cry?" All

  404. flesh is as grass. And all beauty is

  405. like the flower of the field. The grass

  406. withers, the flower

  407. of the Lord blows on it. Surely the

  408. people are grass. The grass withers, the

  409. flower fades, but the word of our God

  410. will stand forever.

  411. Stop there for a moment.

  412. Empower those Valentine flowers.

  413. Are they brown yet?

  414. Are they dead yet? Have you thrown them

  415. out yet? The little additive that you

  416. put in the water, did it keep them

  417. looking good? What shall you cry? Tell

  418. them that all

  419. as grass. What's the analogy here? We're

  420. like grass for a little time. It grows

  421. up.

  422. It's green. It's beautiful. And then one

  423. day the flowered

  424. the flower

  425. and the grass wither and it's dead and

  426. it's dry. And what do you do? You take

  427. it, you

  428. burn it. We went for a walk the other

  429. day on Wednesday. Went for a walk and

  430. nature reserves and they they burned the

  431. fields out there to make way for new

  432. growth coming up. But all those

  433. beautiful grasses that we walked through

  434. last summer last spring, we were walking

  435. through that same field picking flowers.

  436. My wife likes to pick the flowers. My

  437. daughter Eliza likes to drive them

  438. and then save them. But all those

  439. beautiful flowers now the field is

  440. burned and you're walking over the

  441. billionaires

  442. celebrated geniuses Nobel Prize winners

  443. former beauty pageant winners.

  444. All flesh is as

  445. James says this. I think also

  446. the flower

  447. let the rich man let the poor man

  448. rejoice and it is exalted with the rich

  449. man that he is made low as the flower of

  450. the field.

  451. Whatever it is that you take most joy

  452. and pleasure in about yourself, young

  453. man rejoices in his strength. Well, if

  454. God brings you a long life, you'll feel

  455. it subside. You feel yourself weakening.

  456. You'll feel pain

  457. before. Whereas before you can fall down

  458. and get up and not even think about it

  459. anymore, now that little trip will hurt

  460. you for the next month.

  461. And the young beautiful girl

  462. She takes delight in her beauty that

  463. beauty is going to fade

  464. and and intelligence

  465. a long life we all have a decline in our

  466. mental faculties

  467. all the brown hair turns gray

  468. face wrinkles

  469. the body

  470. grass withers the flowers

  471. the word of God forever. This is true of

  472. men. This is true of women. This is true

  473. of nations.

  474. Great Britain used to be the empire in

  475. which the sun never set

  476. all over the globe. There was always the

  477. sun was always shining on the British

  478. Empire. It was so vast and so huge. That

  479. little island, that little foggy island

  480. controlled

  481. good deal of the world.

  482. Powerful.

  483. over

  484. of Rome, true of Egypt and Babylon, true

  485. be true of America, too.

  486. We love our country. We want it to be

  487. sustained,

  488. but you will fade as the glass. This is

  489. what Isaiah said that the way maker, the

  490. highway man was surprised. Why? Why such

  491. a foolish preacher? I didn't show up to

  492. you this kind of stuff. supposed to be

  493. insulted by a preacher today. I bet

  494. you're supposed to make people happy.

  495. No, I'm supposed to help you consider

  496. the fact that you will meet God.

  497. Are you ready to meet the Lord?

  498. Who's in charge of your life?

  499. Is it you? Are you behind the wheel of

  500. the car?

  501. And also, what are you trusting?

  502. John the Baptist going to prepare people

  503. to meet the Lord. And it's a painful

  504. message, but it's an important message

  505. because we want to be ready to move. We

  506. want to look forward to it. We want to

  507. rejoice in it.

  508. Verse four, it says, "Now John wore a

  509. garment came and leather belt around his

  510. waist and his food was wild honey." It's

  511. a very strange verse. It seems kind of

  512. out of place. I'm sure it wasn't out of

  513. place for the original audience. It's

  514. like you don't tell us too much about

  515. what the apostles were. Why are you tell

  516. us what John the Baptist? And there's a

  517. couple of mysteries. One is that that

  518. there was like um that Elijah may have

  519. wore.

  520. That may be correct. It may be correct.

  521. But I think it's to highlight that he is

  522. not like the priests in Jerusalem

  523. who were dressed in fine clothing. He's

  524. an up like the in he does not fit in

  525. with the others. He is separate. He is

  526. in the wilderness. He's called out in

  527. the wilderness. He is like a priest in

  528. exile and and he's wearing camel's hair

  529. a garment of

  530. and a leather belt around his waist and

  531. he's eating locust and wild. He's not

  532. eating the fat of

  533. his father.

  534. Luke starts off with with Zechariah

  535. giving a vision as an old man that his

  536. wife who was elderly would conceive a

  537. son and this son would turn people to

  538. the Lord. The same kind of thought here

  539. and he would be a Nazerite from

  540. So he had long very long hair because he

  541. never cut his hair was never cut. You

  542. may not think of John Bapt that way but

  543. his hair like like the Old Testament

  544. would have been all the way down his

  545. back probably and uh and he was would

  546. have had a very bushy beard and he's

  547. wearing camel's hair which was not which

  548. was unusable clothing which like

  549. mentioned not what everybody wore and it

  550. wasn't wealthy clothing. It was made out

  551. of camel's hair and he's eating a was

  552. ceremonially cleaning 11. It was

  553. something you're allowed to eat and it's

  554. usually what people would eat if they

  555. had nothing else to eat in very hard

  556. times. It's not it's not food.

  557. He's out in the wilderness. He's

  558. separated. He's driven from his unlike

  559. his father who served.

  560. Uh in the year 86, the Romans said the

  561. priesthood is just too powerful,

  562. too.

  563. So the Roman government started to

  564. appoint the priests and the first one

  565. was a man named

  566. the first priest would have five sons

  567. because all five of them at some point

  568. in their lifetime would be would be

  569. high priest and the bizar

  570. was called the bizar of the five sons of

  571. they were very corrupt.

  572. They they uh they did they were not

  573. believers.

  574. So here they are in the temple making

  575. intercession for the people. They don't

  576. believe in the resurrection. They don't

  577. believe in angels and they think when

  578. you're dead you're just kind of dead

  579. asleep. So they're liberal theologians

  580. is what they

  581. don't take theible serious

  582. and and here is the son of priest.

  583. He likely should have been the high

  584. priest in the temple.

  585. He's driven from his office. He's out in

  586. the wilderness. He's wearing a garment

  587. came and leather belt around his waist.

  588. What did priest wear? Exodus 28 near you

  589. and his sons with him from the people of

  590. Israel to spare me and sons

  591. and you shall make holy garments for

  592. your brother for glory and for beauty.

  593. You shall speak to all the skillful whom

  594. I have filled with the spirit of skill

  595. that they may that they make Aaron's

  596. garments torate him for my priesthood.

  597. Well, that's not what John is because

  598. John is alienated from the priesthood

  599. priest. Instead, he's out in the

  600. wilderness later.

  601. What did you see

  602. in the

  603. What did you see?

  604. No.

  605. What did you prophet? Yes.

  606. It says, "Then Jerusalem and all Judea

  607. and all the region about the Jordan were

  608. going out to him and they were baptized

  609. by him. the river confessing their sins.

  610. All of Jerusalem, all of Judea. One of

  611. the things that said that next verse

  612. I forgot to read verse n. This is that

  613. after the grass wither says, "Go up on

  614. high. Go up to a high mountain. Herald

  615. the good news." That is the gospel. Lift

  616. up your voice with strength Jerusalem.

  617. Herald the good news. Lift it up. Fear

  618. not. the cities of Judah, behold your

  619. God. He's there to reveal who the

  620. Messiah is. And the Judah, Jerusalem,

  621. and all Judea, all that region about the

  622. Jordan

  623. in fulfillment of the prophecy of Isaiah

  624. 40, all the cities of Judah coming out

  625. to beapt

  626. Sinners would go when they had sinned

  627. like we read in Leviticus the third

  628. book. They would go and confess their

  629. sins. We see it in Leviticus 5 verse one

  630. says if anyone sins

  631. down when he realizes his guilt many of

  632. these and confesses the sin he has

  633. committed. He shall bring to the Lord as

  634. his compensation for the sin that he has

  635. committed a female from the flock, a

  636. lamb or a goat for a sin offering and

  637. the priest shall make atonement for him

  638. for his sin. So when people became aware

  639. of their sin, they're supposed to go to

  640. the priest and they're supposed to

  641. confess their sin.

  642. Leviticus chapter one they would lay

  643. their hand on the head of that burnt

  644. offering or in this case sin offering

  645. confessing their sin

  646. and they would slay it before the Lord.

  647. What's that picture of? It's a picture

  648. of you bring this you bring this sheep

  649. you lay your hand on his head.

  650. The offerer having confessed his sin is

  651. laying his head on the hand head of the

  652. lamb. Confessing his sins as if his sins

  653. are being imputed put on the account of

  654. the sheep, the lamb. And the innocency

  655. of the lamb without blemish is being

  656. transferred to him. It's a picture of

  657. exchange. The sin is laid on the lamb

  658. and the innocence of the lamb is put on

  659. the offerer and atonement is made. And

  660. God says in Leviticus 1, you shall do

  661. this that you may be accepted.

  662. Confession of sin is necessary to be

  663. accepted.

  664. And it's not about us accepting Jesus

  665. there. It's about God accepting us. And

  666. so when when when John the Baptist, a

  667. priest, is saying to confess your sins

  668. to God, he's preparing them

  669. to meet the lamb of God. Back in John's

  670. gospel, he says we see Jesus coming. We

  671. don't read that here, but he says,

  672. "Behold the lamb of God

  673. of the world."

  674. The lamb of God. So we have this priest

  675. out in the wilderness and he's calling

  676. people to confess their sins.

  677. Take aven.

  678. Consider whether you have any idols. God

  679. first.

  680. Consider how are you treating

  681. your neighbors?

  682. Husbands, how are you treating your

  683. wives? Do you love the church?

  684. Wives. How are you treating your

  685. husband? Do you reverence them? Do they

  686. feel

  687. nagging them?

  688. A guilt

  689. Children, are you honoring your mother

  690. and father? Do you obey with a good

  691. attitude?

  692. Are you kind to others? And a lot of

  693. times we think about all the sins to

  694. confession. We think of the big about

  695. lying.

  696. Think about adultery and maybe say, "Oh,

  697. okay. I'm pretty good on all that. I'm

  698. good." But how are we in the kindness?

  699. Do do people do people People see us as

  700. ambassadors of Christ, approachable

  701. cares about people. You know, that's a

  702. caring about ourselves more than we care

  703. about others. That's a sin, too.

  704. Being rash with our words,

  705. talking,

  706. putting people down on Facebook, right?

  707. Insulting people even at the level of a

  708. child. Especially when mom and dad's not

  709. around. That's all my sweet little boy

  710. and girl, they wouldn't do that. I know

  711. other kids do that. My little boy and

  712. little girl wouldn't do that. Wow. We

  713. don't know. Little children, you know.

  714. You know, you know how mean you can be,

  715. how selfish you can be.

  716. Well, John was calling people to confess

  717. their sins. He was telling the soldiers,

  718. "Do violence to no man. Be content with

  719. your wages." There's one consentment.

  720. We're called to be content. If we're

  721. murmuring and complaining and grumbling,

  722. it's it's in gratitude towards God. It's

  723. a sin John the Baptist would call people

  724. to repent of their sexual immorality,

  725. their covetousness, their anger

  726. problems,

  727. their lack of self-control, lack of

  728. self-government.

  729. And he's telling them, "Confess your

  730. sins. If God brings it to mind,

  731. let it go."

  732. What does he say?

  733. But when he saw many of the Pharisees

  734. and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he

  735. said to them, "You brood of vipers,"

  736. that's a poisonous ven or a venomous

  737. snake. Something say poisonous. A

  738. venomous snake, a viper,

  739. who warned you to flee from the wrath to

  740. come bear fruit in keeping with

  741. repentance. Now both of these, the

  742. Pharisees and the Sadducees, that the

  743. names are religious orders.

  744. The priests at that time who were in

  745. control of the priesthood, the ones that

  746. were actually in control of things, the

  747. high priest were Sadducees.

  748. As I told you before, they didn't they

  749. rejected the resurrection.

  750. They thought when you're dead, you're

  751. dead. They didn't believe that there's

  752. consciousness after death. But Jesus

  753. very clearly teaches in Luke 16 that

  754. when we die, we remain conscious. We

  755. remember things. We remember people.

  756. that that some go to a place of torment

  757. waiting for the resurrection and some go

  758. to a pleasant place

  759. and uh the didn't believe in any of that

  760. because there the the ministry can be

  761. very lucrative.

  762. The the apostles had people selling

  763. their houses and laying money at their

  764. feet

  765. and it was it was needful because there

  766. were a lot of people coming from parts

  767. of the empire. They were hearing the

  768. gospel, believing the gospel and they

  769. were to disciple. They needed a place to

  770. stay and they needed food and they only

  771. brought so much for their short trip to

  772. Jerusalem. So, people were being very

  773. generous. They were selling their

  774. possessions. That's why that's why the

  775. early church had all things in common.

  776. They weren't communist. There was a a

  777. dramatic need as God was gathering the

  778. house of Israel, as God was bringing

  779. these people to saving faith. There

  780. there was a need for money to take care

  781. of all the people, all the widows that

  782. were coming. And and so people were

  783. selling what they had, giving it

  784. apostles. Well, for a Judas, for a

  785. covetous man, there's opportunity to

  786. make money. Ministry can be very

  787. lucrative. And so these Sadducees, they

  788. didn't believe

  789. in the resurrection. They didn't believe

  790. in eternal life,

  791. but they were utilitarians. You know,

  792. religion is good for the people and it's

  793. very lucrative. So, they filled that

  794. position. There's a lot of denominations

  795. like that today.

  796. You know, Wesley is credited with whose

  797. theology I don't all together agree

  798. with, but he was a mighty man of God. He

  799. really was.

  800. He said people asked him one time,

  801. "Wesley, why do why do people show up to

  802. hear you preach?" He says, "I just get

  803. on fire and people come to watch me

  804. burn."

  805. And and and Wesley and Whitfield

  806. preached the gospel and England was

  807. transformed by it. Some think that

  808. England would have had like revolution

  809. except for the great awakening that

  810. happened under Wesley and Whitfield

  811. and there was a great awakening in

  812. America as well. was a great turning.

  813. People had become very intellectual and

  814. heady in their faith. But through the

  815. preaching of Whitfield in particular, a

  816. little bit of Wesley but more Whitfield

  817. in America, Jonathan Edwards, multitudes

  818. came the saving faith in Jesus Christ

  819. brought a rebirth in America.

  820. Well, today what's the Methodist

  821. denomination

  822. embraces? We got women pastors,

  823. homosexual pastors.

  824. Many of them deny the virgin birth.

  825. It's like where's where where's the

  826. where's the authority of the word of

  827. God? Who gave me the authority to change

  828. what God has written?

  829. And churches go little. It's not not

  830. just methods. There's a lot of

  831. denominations started by that that that

  832. were movements started by people who

  833. love Jesus and they love people and they

  834. believe God's word and God did a work

  835. through them and and and so when people

  836. die, they leave a bunch of money to the

  837. church and they build glorious

  838. buildings, but eventually it's all about

  839. the building and and listen, having

  840. having a wonderful place like this to

  841. meet is such a blessing. So grateful for

  842. it. But if we just become a white washed

  843. supper or burn it down,

  844. the church is the people.

  845. Well, the Sadducees, they're in the

  846. temple. They've got the smells and bells

  847. and uniforms, but they don't have a real

  848. faith in God.

  849. But they do come out to John the

  850. Baptist.

  851. And John the Baptist calls them vipers.

  852. Then there's this other group, the

  853. Pharisees. The Pharisees, unlike the

  854. Sadducees,

  855. they were conservative.

  856. They believed

  857. that God inspired the synergy.

  858. They believed in the resurrection. They

  859. believed in miracles. They believed in

  860. angels.

  861. Paul the Apostle said as as touching the

  862. law, he said he called himself a

  863. Pharisee in terms of the doctrinal

  864. statements of faith in God's word. Now,

  865. in addition to their faith in the word

  866. of God, they also had a bunch of

  867. traditions of men

  868. that they held as equally valid. And if

  869. you look at what Jesus criticizes the

  870. Pharisees for, which we'll get to later

  871. in the book of Matthew, um it was their

  872. covetousness is one of the big ones,

  873. their hypocrisy, and also the fact that

  874. they exalted their human tradition above

  875. the law of God. He does not criticize

  876. them for loving the law of God.

  877. He criticizes them for the traditions of

  878. man that they exalt the traditions of

  879. man over the word of God.

  880. But at least they believe in the

  881. resurrection and things of that nature.

  882. And it's been noted that Jesus was

  883. harder on the Pharisees than he did the

  884. Sadducees. Probably because he

  885. identified more with the Pharisees than

  886. he did the Sadducees. The Ses not even

  887. believers. The Pharisees have become

  888. faithful.

  889. This churches

  890. aren't going to stick around very long.

  891. I don't believe

  892. where's our biggest ditch that we have

  893. to be aware of at this church.

  894. At least for now. Um,

  895. if I quit believing it, I'm going to

  896. quit preaching.

  897. I'm not I'm not I'm not gonna I'm not

  898. gonna I'm not going to stay in the

  899. pulpit. If if something happens where I

  900. woke up at the Sadducees, I I I leave.

  901. Where's our danger? Our danger is

  902. falling into traditions and losing that

  903. love for God, love for neighbor, love

  904. for the poor, love for the lost,

  905. self-righteous,

  906. faking it, going through the motions.

  907. Now, that's even easier to do than we'd

  908. like to think because it happens by

  909. degrees and gradually.

  910. That's why reason why it's very

  911. important that every Sunday we have a

  912. time of renewal. We come to the Lord's

  913. table. Allow God's law. Allow God's word

  914. to search your heart. Like David, he

  915. said, "Try me. Know my thoughts. Search

  916. me. See if there be any wicked way in

  917. me. Confess it to the Lord and come to

  918. the communion table and freshly give

  919. thanks and appreciation for what Christ

  920. has done for you and walk out of here

  921. with a desire to do something for

  922. Jesus."

  923. Because it's very easy to keep your

  924. conservative beliefs. I'm talking even

  925. scripturally conservative

  926. and and draw near with your lips, but

  927. your heart is far from God. This is

  928. always a danger. We have to constantly

  929. come and renew ourselves before the

  930. Lord.

  931. And so the Pharisees and the Sadducees,

  932. they're two types of vipers. John the

  933. Baptist criticizes both and he warns

  934. them to do what? Bear fruit in keeping

  935. with repentance.

  936. Many times these people will say a tree

  937. is known by its fruit

  938. is known by its bark and leaves also but

  939. fruit is very from a long distance you

  940. can look over and you can see I see

  941. apple my blurry vision that's an apple

  942. tree if apples were being born and if

  943. it's a thorn a thorn bush you can tell

  944. what that is too a tree is known by it

  945. fruit and so he says if you're

  946. professing faith in Christ if you're

  947. professing faith in God and produce the

  948. fruit that comes logically from a living

  949. faith in the living God. It should

  950. produce living words. He says something

  951. else to the Pharisees and Sites, all

  952. Jews. He do not presume to say to

  953. yourselves, we have Abraham as our

  954. father. For I tell you, God is able from

  955. these stones to raise up children for

  956. Abraham. What's the danger here? The

  957. danger is for the Pharisee, they were

  958. all Jews, to say, "We are descendants of

  959. Abraham. Therefore, God accepts

  960. This is a current concern. A lot of

  961. people say, "Well, we're Jews are

  962. accepted because we're Jews or Israel's

  963. accepted because they're descendants of

  964. Abraham." Not according to John the

  965. Baptist.

  966. He says, "Don't don't say we have

  967. Abraham for our father." Don't say that.

  968. That's a danger for us too. Very easy.

  969. Young young children growing up in your

  970. parents household, you too need to

  971. examine yourself and say, "Do I really

  972. believe what

  973. mom and dad

  974. The evidence is there. Many, many young

  975. people go through their high school

  976. years and don't come to a saving faith

  977. in Christ and as soon as they go to

  978. college, they're living like the world.

  979. This is a fear I have as a pastor. I've

  980. been thinking about it a lot lately.

  981. Thinking about it a lot. I I we we don't

  982. you

  983. am I responsible? Am I going to give an

  984. account? Yes, I am. But fathers,

  985. mothers, you're going to give an

  986. account, too.

  987. And so I I urge you to don't just be

  988. Christians in church.

  989. Make sure Christ is brought into your

  990. home. Teach him the word of God in your

  991. home.

  992. Teach them to learn scripture.

  993. And also teach them apologetics.

  994. Read books about the defense of the

  995. faith. Read learn give them a biblical

  996. worldview. There's a lot there's things

  997. I want to do about that in the near

  998. future. I think on a regular rotation

  999. every few years, we need to as a church,

1000. we need to be hitting something that

1001. apologetics, something that deals with

1002. having a right heart before the Lord,

1003. something has to do with worldview,

1004. something that has to do with right now,

1005. we're kind of on a systematic theology

1006. thing. If you're in the small groups,

1007. we're going through, we started studying

1008. the the foundations of the Christian

1009. faith and we're starting systematic

1010. theology. And that's very important to

1011. know how to think rightly about God and

1012. what his word about a variety of about

1013. all sorts of topics. But Satan has

1014. different attacks. He attacks he he'll

1015. attack he'll attack our appetite and try

1016. to draw us into sin. If God gets us

  1017. caught up

1018. in sin, our mind will justify what our

  1019. lust want to do.

  1020. It's not all intellectual.

1021. One reason why atheists are atheists who

1022. used to call themselves Christians is

1023. because they want to fornicate. And

1024. atheism is justification to do whatever

1025. you want to do. Right? So the heart is

1026. important. You can't just find but but

1027. the mind is important too. We're to love

1028. God with all our what? Heart, soul,

  1029. mind, strength. The mind.

1030. Can you em can your heart embrace what

1031. your mind rejects? No, it cannot.

1032. Now the Bible or or or God's word and

1033. logic and reason, we have answers for

1034. the atheists. We have answers for other

  1035. religions

1036. because God God is all knowing and he

1037. revealed himself in the word and he is

1038. true. And so it's important that we

1039. learn what God's word says. And it's

1040. also important that our children learn

1041. how to defend. But back to our text, we

1042. have Abraham for our father. God is able

1043. to use stones to raise up children for

1044. Abraham. Now I having studied the Hebrew

1045. Old Testament and knowing the word

1046. stones and the word for children. I I

1047. asked AI to confirm my suspicion. I

1048. asked AI something along the lines of um

1049. if John the Baptist was preaching in

1050. Aramaic, is there a play on words

1051. between stones and children of Abraham?

1052. And it confirmed my suspicions that I

1053. don't know any Aramaic or very little

1054. anyway. And said, "Yes, what is that?"

1055. Well, the word for stones in Hebrew, you

1056. can hear it eban. Evan

1057. Evan there's the boy name it means stone

1058. or rock be a rock for Jesus stone

1059. the word for son is now here it says

1060. children but the word even in Greek is

1061. son but it means more than sons it's a

1062. general term for children okay but it

1063. means son and so he says god is able of

  1064. these

  1065. stone to raise up

  1066. son. It's a play on words.

1067. A house, a physical house is built out

1068. of stones. A a family is built up of

1069. sons, children. And so John John the

1070. Baptist in Aramaic and in Hebrew, if he

1071. was preaching in Hebrew, it would be

1072. evident that he says, "God is able of

1073. these to raise up Ben. He's able to

1074. raise up sons. A house is built with

1075. stones. And in the Old Testament, it

1076. talks about building your your family

1077. name. The word the word to build is

  1078. banana.

1079. So you build a physical house. You ban

1080. physical house out of eban stone. It's

1081. all got the same root. And so he's

1082. making a play on words. And he's saying,

  1083. "Yeah, you're you're proud that you're

1084. sons of Abraham. God can take a rock and

  1085. turn them into a

1086. That's a play on word in Hebrew here.

1087. God is able to take if God is able to

1088. take a rock and make it a son like he

1089. took dust and made it Adam his first

1090. son. Then then God can take Gentiles.

1091. God can take Rahab the harlot. God can

  1092. take

1093. God can take Caleb in the Old

1094. God God can take the Gentiles and he can

1095. make them st and that's an important

1096. theme of the book of Matthew as we've

1097. covered multiple times with Gentile

1098. inclusion. Gentiles are included. God is

1099. drafting Gentiles into the house of

1100. Israel. He's bringing them in to the

1101. house of Israel. He's drafting us in the

1102. read of Christ. All right. Verse 10.

1103. Even now, John Bapt says, "Even now, the

1104. axe is laid to the root of trees. Every

1105. tree, therefore, that does not bear good

1106. fruit is cut down and thrown into the

  1107. fire." Remember, he's a he's a highway

1108. maker. Think about the pioneers when

  1109. they went wet.

1110. And they had to make carts for they had

1111. to make roads for the cart to go on.

1112. What are they doing? They're chopping

1113. down trees, filling in holes,

1114. and and tearing down mounds to make a

1115. highway for people to go west. Well, uh

1116. here here John is saying, you know what,

1117. the axe is out. God's looking at the

1118. fruit. He's not just listening to what

1119. you say. He's not just making sure

  1120. you're saying the right things. He's

1121. looking at your fruit. And if the tree

1122. is not producing the fruit of

1123. righteousness, what's going to happen?

1124. The Lord is going to cut it down the

1125. root. But Dax has already laid at the

1126. root of trees. Today's work has begun

1127. and he's starting to chop down the

1128. trees. It's a warning to the Pharisees

1129. and the Sadducees. You better be

1130. producing the fruit of your profession.

1131. Verse 11, I baptize you with water for

1132. repentance, but he who is coming after

1133. me is mightier than I, whose sandals I

1134. am not worthy to carry. He will baptize

1135. you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

1136. Now John baptized with water as priests

1137. would do in the Old Testament ceremonial

1138. mikvah uh washings to as a visible

1139. picture of washing away sins and also

1140. when when non-Jews would want to become

1141. Jews they would get baptized in water

1142. and the men would get circumcised and it

1143. was a picture of you're dead to being

1144. Gentiles now you're alive to Jewish

1145. no longer gent Gentile, you're now a Jew

1146. and your gentile filthiness is washed

1147. away and you are accepted. It was part

1148. of it was something you would do for a

1149. gentile. You wouldn't do it for a Jew.

1150. John the Baptist is doing it to his

1151. fellow Jewish people. And he says, "I am

  1152. baptizing you with water,

1153. but another one who's mightier than I

1154. whose sandals I'm not worthy to carry."

1155. He's saying, "I'm not even fit to be

1156. Messiah's lowest slave. The lowest slave

1157. of the household would be the one likely

1158. a little child not skilled in other

1159. things. Master comes in with dusty feet

1160. walking the roads walking where there's

1161. the roads were filthy. There was horse

1162. feces everywhere, dog feces everywhere

1163. and and human feces everywhere because

1164. they didn't have the sewer systems that

1165. we do today. So it was customary

1166. everybody when they came in the house

1167. would get their feet washed and Who got

1168. that job? The lowest slave of thousands

1169. would unlatch the shoes of the master

1170. when they would come home.

1171. I'm not even worthy to unuse this

  1172. sandal.

1173. I'm not even fit to do this. So John the

1174. Baptist whom Jesus calls the greatest

1175. born of women had a sense of awareness.

1176. He had a sense of awareness. I am a

  1177. sinner.

1178. I need to be baptized of him which he

1179. will say. I need his baptism, too. I'm

1180. baptizing you, he says, with water to

1181. repentance. I'm getting you ready. But

1182. when he shows up, it's not just going to

1183. be water. He's going to baptize you with

1184. the spirit and with fire. I want to

1185. focus on the Holy Spirit first because I

1186. think this has to do with regeneration.

1187. I can take you, John is like John, I can

1188. take you through this religious ritual

1189. getting ready to meet the Messiah. I can

1190. take you through the exercise of

1191. thinking about sin and confessing sin

1192. and telling you to get ready for

1193. Messiah, but he's going to baptize you

  1194. with the spirit,

  1195. the new birth,

1196. regeneration. He's going to make you new

1197. creatures. He will baptize you with the

1198. Holy Spirit and fire. All right. Now,

1199. what's the baptism of fire? A lot of

1200. songs about refiners fire and getting

1201. baptized in fire. I heard somebody

1202. preach one time. He's like, "Well, you

1203. may have been baptized with the spirit,

1204. but haven't you been baptized with the

1205. fire yet?" I like, "Yeah, that sounds

  1206. exciting." You know, fire.

1207. You don't want to get baptized in fire.

1208. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit

1209. and fire. His winnowing fork is in his

1210. hand. He will clear his threshing floor

1211. and gather his meat into the barn, but

1212. the chaff will burn your entrenchable

1213. fire. What's the illustration here? says

  1214. his winnowing fork. What's that? It's a

1215. pitchfork. We call it a pitchfork. Why

1216. is it a pitch fork? Because you pitch,

  1217. you pitch the

1218. got wheat, you got the stalk, you got

1219. the the grain, and they cut the heads of

1220. the tunnels off. Then they beat the

1221. wheat. They beat it with the pestle on a

1222. mortals called mortar. They put it out

1223. on a on a floor. I saw it done in

1224. Romania at one time, not with wheat, but

1225. with beans. Actually, my my my wife's

1226. grandma's sister in Little Village, she

1227. had her her she had some sheets laid out

1228. on the ground and she had these beans

1229. with pods and she put them in a pile and

1230. she took the stick and she was beating

1231. the bean pods. So that the the pods

1232. broke open and then you got this mixture

1233. of pods and beans. You want to eat the

1234. beans, you don't want the pod. So she

1235. would eat the dried pods and the beans

1236. would come out. Then what do you do?

1237. Well, you take your pitchfork, whether

1238. it's wheat or bean pods in my

1239. illustration, and you pitch it up in the

1240. in the air and someone with a fan,

1241. usually a different person, would take

1242. the fan and would blow it, unless it was

1243. a windy day. The wind would do it for

1244. you. Um, but you would you would pitch

1245. it up in the air and the wind would take

1246. the lighter husk and blow it into one

1247. pile and the beans, which are heavier,

1248. would fall down into another pile. So,

1249. the wind and the pitchfork would

1250. separate the bean from the husk. the

1251. wheat from the chaff. Messiah is coming.

1252. He's got a winnowing fork in his hand

1253. and he will clean his threshing floor.

1254. Threshing is where you beat the wheat

1255. and gather the wheat into the barn. And

1256. the picture here is he's he's got a fan

  1257. and he's got a

1258. the fork and if it's a windy another

1259. gospel says he has a fan here says he

1260. has winnowing fork to winnow. The wind

1261. would blow. You'd have a pile of husk

1262. and you'd have a pile of beans. You take

1263. the beans with the wheat. wheat. Now,

1264. I'm not talking about my grandmother,

1265. but you take the wheat, you gather it

1266. into your barn, and what's left over in

1267. the house? It's not good raven. So, what

1268. do you do? Kindling. You burn it. You

1269. don't want to be baptized with fire. You

1270. want to be gathered into the barn.

1271. You want to be synagogued into the barn.

1272. The chaff you will burn with

  1273. unquenchable fire. There's many

1274. scriptures that refer to this analogy.

1275. Um, but I think Psalm one is most in

1276. mind. I'm just Read the whole thing real

1277. quick. Psalm one, it's short. Blessed is

1278. the man who walks not in the counsel of

1279. the wicked, nor stands in the way of

1280. sinners, nor sits in the feet of

1281. scoffers, but his delight is in the law

1282. of the Lord. And on his law he meditates

1283. day and night. What's he like, David? He

1284. is like a tree planted by streams of

1285. water. It yields it fruit in its season,

1286. and it leaf does not wither. In all that

1287. he does he prospers. So you've been

1288. hearing a lot about bringing forth fruit

1289. need for repentance. Very reminiscent of

1290. the righteous in Psalm one. The wicked

1291. verse four are not so but like the

1292. chaff. The chaff that the wind drives

1293. away. Wherefore the wicked will not

1294. stand in the judgment nor sinners in the

1295. congregation of the righteous. For the

1296. Lord knows the way of the righteous but

1297. the way of the wicked will perish. You

1298. got cont. The righteous are like trees

1299. planted by water that bears fruit and

1300. sees them. The wicked are like the

1301. chaff. The wind drives away. And John is

1302. saying Messiah is coming up. He's coming

1303. here and he's going to thoroughly purge

  1304. the Lord.

1305. Everyone's going to have to stand before

1306. him and he's going to touch.

1307. Now the Lord shows up. Verse 13. Then

1308. Jesus came from Galilee to Jordan to

  1309. John

1310. to be baptized with him.

1311. John would have prevented him, saying,

1312. "I don't need to be baptized by you, and

1313. do you come to me?" But Jesus answered

1314. him, "Let it be so now, for thus it is

1315. fitting for us to fulfill all

1316. righteousness." Then he consented. And

1317. when Jesus was baptized, immediately he

1318. went up from the water, and behold, the

1319. heavens were open to him, and he saw the

1320. spirit of God descending like a dove and

1321. coming to rest on him. Behold, a voice

1322. from heaven saying, "This is my beloved

1323. son. whom I am well pleased. I'll

1324. probably make this the text next week, I

1325. suppose. Who knows? Um there's so much

1326. to say about these verses, but I'll just

1327. point out why did he get baptized?

1328. Because he fulfills the law that all of

  1329. us have broken.

  1330. We've all broken God's will. We've all

1331. fallen short of the glory of God. None

1332. of us have measured up. None of us

1333. measure up to the glory of God. Jesus is

1334. the beloved son with whom the father is

  1335. well pleased.

1336. And and he came to do what? To fulfill

1337. all righteousness. The beloved son fills

1338. fulfills the law. He fulfills the

  1339. requirements of the law

  1340. so that

1341. we can be given the gift of

  1342. righteousness by grace.

  1343. And so

1344. Isaiah 40 going on to the next verse

1345. that I quoted earlier says a voice says

1346. cry and I said what shall I cry? All

1347. flesh is as grass. There's that burning

1348. analogy. And all its beauty is like the

1349. flower of the field. The grass withers

1350. the flower fades. When the breath of the

1351. Lord blows on it, surely the people are

1352. grass. The grass withers, the flower

1353. fades. But the word of our God will

1354. stand forever. Go on up to a high

1355. mountain, O Zion, herald of good news,

1356. lift up your voice with strength, O

1357. Jerusalem. Herald of good news, lifted

1358. up. Fear not. Say to the cities of

  1359. Judah, behold your God.

1360. We have here the baptism of Jesus, the

1361. father, God the father, God the son, God

1362. the holy spirit. The chapter ends like

1363. Isaiah 40 verse 9. Behold your God.

    Isaiah 40:9

1364. Behold your savior. Behold the one who

1365. came to redeem you. As it says in John

1366. 1, behold the lamb of God who came to

  1367. take away your sins.

1368. I want to go to one more place briefly.

  1369. 2 Corinthians 5. As I'm summing up and

1370. I'm thinking about the question, are you

1371. ready to meet the Lord?

  1372. 2 Corinthians 5.

1373. So we are always of good courage. Paul

1374. is speaking. We know that while we are

1375. at home in the body, we're away from the

1376. Lord. For we walk by faith, not by

1377. sight. Yes, we're of good courage. And

1378. we would rather be away from the body

1379. and at home with the Lord. So whether we

1380. are at home or away, we make it our aim

1381. to please him. That's the goal of the

1382. Christian is to please the Lord.

1383. For we must all appear before the

1384. judgment seat of Christ, that each one

1385. may receive what is due for what has

1386. done in for what he has done in the

1387. body, whether good or evil. Therefore,

1388. knowing the fear of the Lord, we

1389. persuade others. But what we are is

1390. known to God, and I hope it is known

1391. also to your conscience. While I was

1392. sitting in the hospital the other day

1393. waiting to hear about the birth of my

  1394. baby granddaughter,

1395. uh someone in the church texted me about

1396. this verse. What does this mean? We must

1397. all appear before the judgment seat of

1398. Christ. Actually, the question led me

1399. thinking about this passage. This is not

1400. the great white throne judgment. This

1401. this seat was called the bema seat. This

1402. this seat was like a race platform that

1403. athletic contestants would be judged

1404. from. This isn't a court of law. This is

1405. a court where people were evaluated for

1406. how they played in the games. And we

1407. must all appear before this judgement

1408. seat. We all got to stand before the

1409. judge. And the idea here is that even as

  1410. believers,

1411. we're gonna we're going to stand before

1412. the Lord and our lives are going to be

  1413. evaluated.

1414. What did you do for Jesus?

1415. Now, the final judgment, the wicked are

1416. going to be judged at if you haven't

1417. turned from your sin and put your faith

  1418. in Jesus Christ,

1419. then an awful future awaits you.

1420. As believers, we don't have to worry

  1421. about that anymore.

1422. But we do need to be Let me ask you, do

1423. you want to come before the Lord

  1424. empty-handed?

1425. I want I just want to impress upon you.

1426. You want to be ready to meet the Lord.

1427. One sense, I'm ready to meet the Lord.

1428. I'm ready to meet the Lord. Um my sins

  1429. are forgiven. I'm accepted. I've trusted

  1430. in Christ. I know he's my savior. I'm

1431. ready to move forward in that sense.

1432. This other son, I'm not ready to go yet.

1433. I I pray he gives me more.

1434. I want to see more people come to

1435. Christ. I want to see more people

1436. walking in God. I want I want to do

1437. something with the life you live. I I

1438. hope and pray, church, that you're

1439. living for something more than what you

1440. can get down here entertainment wise,

  1441. wealthwise, because that's that's all

1442. draft stuff and it's going to fade away.

1443. do something for Jesus. The final thing

1444. he says is knowing the fear of the Lord.

1445. We persuade other ugly. Why are we

1446. trying to win people to Christ? Not

1447. trying to earn brownie points so we can

1448. make it to heaven. We want other people

  1449. to know our savior.

1450. We want other people to come to a saving

1451. knowledge who he is. We we know what it

1452. is to be forgiven. We want them to

  1453. experience forgiveness.

1454. But John, he says, "I'm not even worthy

1455. to sit down and latch your shoe." We

1456. should have such humility as believers.

  1457. Not like the

1458. Knowing the great debt we've been

1459. forgiven with compassion and love and

1460. mercy, we should talk to the unbelievers

1461. and try to persuade them. Knowing to

1462. fear the Lord, we persuade others. So

1463. later in the chapter, he says,

1464. "Therefore, we are ambassadors for

1465. Christ." God making his appeal through

  1466. us.

1467. We be we implore you, talking

1468. unbelievers, we implore you on behalf of

1469. Christ, be reconciled to God. For our

1470. sake, he made him to be who knew no sin

1471. so in him we might become the

1472. righteousness of God. What it's saying

1473. is Jesus is the lamb that came to die

1474. for your sin. If you're an unbeliever,

1475. we implore you on behalf of God

1476. reconciled to God. How do you get

1477. reconciled with God? You turn from your

  1478. sins.

1479. You you give up who's running your life.

  1480. Who's in charge?

1481. If you're if you can't say Jesus is is

1482. in charge of my life, then you're yet to

1483. turn from your sins. And the second

1484. question is, what are you trusting in?

1485. If you died right now, what would you be

1486. hoping is your ticket to heaven? If it's

1487. something you've done or who you are,

1488. that is a vain hope. It will not get you

1489. into heaven. That is wood and stubble.

  1490. That is chap stuff.

1491. The only thing that can get us into

1495. So we implore you unbeliever be

1496. reconciled to God. Come to him. Confess

1497. your sin. Confess your need and put your

1498. faith in him for the forgiveness of

1499. sins. Let us pray. Lord God, we thank

1500. you that you are so gracious to us that

1501. we could be here in this room this

1502. morning reading from your word, hearing

1503. so clearly what your word says to us.

1509. even the difficult people, God, give us

1510. hearts of compassion for them.

1511. That we would love them like you loved

1512. us because before your throne, we're all

  1513. children.

1514. It's it's your grace that makes the

  1515. difference.

1516. Give us hearts of function,

  1517. God. Give us enthusiasm

1518. to live our lives aiming to please you,

1519. our Lord and Savior, that you would be

1520. our delight, we would rejoice in you,
