  1. Good morning.

  2. Well, we're going to be back in Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  3. chapter 3 and uh I'm not going to go on

  4. the way I thought I was going to go on

  5. last week. Last week we did an overview

  6. of the entire chapter. If you haven't

  7. heard that uh the message was entitled,

  8. are you ready to meet the Lord? I

  9. encourage you to go back and listen to

  10. it. It was an overview of Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  11. chapter 3. But this morning, I want to

  12. And I want to get

  13. something very specific in the passage.

  14. And I titled this the three baptisms.

  15. In this chapter, we see two baptizers.

  16. And three baptisms are alluded to. A

  17. baptism in water, a baptism in spirit,

  18. and a baptism of fire.

  19. And they're distinct.

  20. I realized I need to go back and talk

  21. about this because one is I want to look

  22. at the Old Testament and its

  23. foreshadowing of this and then also I

  24. want to look at what happens after

  25. Christ ascends into heaven and how it

  26. carries out for us and its application

  27. for us. There's a lot of application

  28. here. Very very important application

  29. here because the three baptisms

  30. represent three very important things.

  31. First of all, there's the baptism of

  32. water for repentance.

  33. This is what John the Baptist could do.

  34. John the Baptist could baptize those

  35. that came after him in water for

  36. repentance. He said, "But one comes

  37. after I, another baptizer

  38. who can baptize with the spirit and with

  39. fire." As a human minister, the most I

  40. can do is try to lead you to Christ.

  41. Try to prepare the way of the Lord for

  42. you by calling you to repentance,

  43. calling you to put your faith in Christ

  44. and pointing you to him. He alone

  45. can give you a new heart. Human beings

  46. can't do that. Human ministers can't do

  47. that. He alone can cleanse you from your

  48. sins. He alone can seal you with the

  49. Holy Spirit.

  50. And then we're also told about the bapt

  51. baptism of fire for judgment.

  52. He baptizes with water. Man can baptize

  53. in water. But Jesus when he comes, John

  54. the baptiz will baptize with the Holy

  55. Spirit and with fire.

  56. That has a very rich history in the Old

  57. Testament. One of the reasons I decided

  58. to go back and hit this again is because

  59. there's so much that we miss when we

  60. don't look at the Old Test. background

  61. to what it says. I'm I'm very excited

  62. about it. And then we see the symbolism

  63. carried out in the New Testament. What

  64. is this baptism of fire? It always has

  65. something to do with judgment. It always

  66. has to do something with God's

  67. disposition and wrath toward sin

  68. every time. Now, there is a sense in

  69. which it can apply to us as believers,

  70. God's refining fire for us, but it's

  71. seen most of all in God's wrath towards

  72. s who don't repent, who aren't ready.

  73. We're told in Hebrews chapter 10 that

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  74. our God is a consuming fire.

  75. And this is not a warm fuzzy kind of

  76. fire. This is

  77. God is a holy God.

  78. And our sins are going to be dealt with

  79. by judgment. Either by God's judgment on

  80. the cross in our place, or we're going

  81. to stand under judgment. If you stand

  82. with me now for the reading of God's

  83. word, let us read Matthew chapter 3. I'm

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  84. going to read the whole chapter, but I'm

  85. going to focus in on a couple verses,

  86. but I want to give the context. So,

  87. Matthew chapter 3, starting at verse

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  88. one. In those days, John the Baptist

  89. came preaching in the wilderness of

  90. Judea. Repent for the kingdom of heaven

  91. is at hand. For this is he who was

  92. spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he

  93. said, "The voice of one crying in the

  94. wilderness, Prepare the way of the Lord.

  95. Make his path straight. Now John wore a

  96. garment of camel's hair and a leather

  97. belt around his waist. And his food was

  98. locust and wild honey. Then Jerusalem

  99. and all Judea and all the region about

  100. the Jordan were going after him. And

  101. they were baptized by him in the river

  102. Jordan confessing their sins.

  103. But when he saw many of the Pharisees

  104. and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he

  105. said to them, "You bru vipers. who warn

  106. you to flee from the wrath to come. Bear

  107. fruit in keeping with repentance and do

  108. not presume to say to yourselves, "We

  109. have Abraham as our father." For I tell

  110. you, God is able of these stones to

  111. raise up children for Abraham. Even now,

  112. the axe is laid to the root of the tree.

  113. Every tree therefore that does not bear

  114. good fruit is cut down and thrown into

  115. the fire.

  116. I baptize you with water for repentance.

  117. But he who is coming after me is

  118. mightier than I, whose sandals I am not

  119. worthy to carry. He will baptize you

  120. with the Holy Spirit and fire. His

  121. winnowing fork is in his hand. And he

  122. will clear the threshing floor and

  123. gather his wheat into the barn that the

  124. chaff he will burn with unquenchable

  125. fire.

  126. Then Jesus came from Galilee to the

  127. Jordan to John. baptized by him. John

  128. would have prevented him, saying, "I

  129. need to be baptized by you, and do you

  130. come to me?" But Jesus answered him,

  131. "Let it be so now, for thus it is

  132. fitting for us to fulfill all

  133. righteousness." Then he consented. When

  134. Jesus was baptized, immediately he went

  135. up from the water, and behold, the

  136. heavens were open to him, and he saw the

  137. spirit of God descending like a dove and

  138. coming to rest on him. Behold, a voice

  139. from heaven said, "This is my beloved

  140. son with whom I am well pleased." Let us

  141. pray. Father God, we thank you that you

  142. came in.

  143. You took on humanity.

  144. God the Son, you fulfilled all

  145. righteousness.

  146. With you, the Father was well pleased.

  147. And yet on the cross, you bore the wrath

  148. that every sinner deserves. On the

  149. cross, you became object of God's hatred

  150. for sin.

  151. We thank you, Father, that you bore the

  152. wrath that we can have your

  153. grace and justification. Thank you, God,

  154. for the forgiveness of sins. Thank you,

  155. Lord, for renewed hearts by your Holy

  156. Spirit. God, I pray that what we read in

  157. this text today would lead us to live

  158. grateful, careful lives, redeeming the

  159. times, the days are evil.

  160. Make your people have a hunger and a

  161. yearning to walk in holiness, to walk

  162. near to you, not grieving your spirit,

  163. but rejoicing in the life that you've

  164. laid out for us to live in carefulness

  165. and with boldness. In Jesus name I pray.

  166. Amen. You may be seated.

  167. With the son, the father is well

  168. pleased. He is the lamb without blemish.

  169. He is the perfect one. He fulfilled all

  170. righteousness. Our chapter ends with the

  171. father's endorsement of the son, the

  172. beloved son who was willing to go and to

  173. die in our place.

  174. We see here John the Baptist preparing

  175. the way as we talked last week. Uh he's

  176. like in in road construction building.

  177. The the high places he brings low, the

  178. low places he brings up to prepare a way

  179. for the Lord. Uh that that when he comes

  180. the people can come to meet the Lord.

  181. He's he's preparing them by baptizing

  182. them to repentance. The Old Testament in

  183. our English Bibles ends with the book of

  184. Malachi. In Malachi 3, we have a

  185. prophecy of John the Baptist and Jesus.

  186. And and again, we have a reference to

  187. fire. Malachi 3 verse one it says behold

  188. I send my messenger

  189. and he will prepare the way before me

  190. and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly

  191. come to his temple the messenger of the

  192. covenant in whom you delight behold he

  193. is coming says the Lord of hosts but who

  194. can endure the day of his coming and who

  195. can stand when he appears for he is like

  196. a refiner's fire and like fuller's so he

  197. will sit as a refiner and purifier of

  198. silver and he will purify the sons of

  199. Levi and refine them like gold and

  200. silver and they will bring offerings and

  201. righteousness to the Lord. Then the

  202. offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be

  203. pleasing to the Lord as in the days of

  204. old and as in former years. The name

  205. Malachi means my messenger. Malik means

  206. angel or messenger. So we have the

  207. author of the book's name is Malachi my

  208. messenger. And then we have I send my

  209. messenger which name like the word

  210. Malachi and he will prepare the way

  211. before me and the Lord whom you seek

  212. who's that Yahweh whom you seek will

  213. suddenly come to his temple the

  214. messenger of the covenant so there's

  215. three messengers here the the messenger

  216. who's writing the book the messenger

  217. who's John the Baptist and the messenger

  218. who is the Lord will suddenly appear and

  219. that's what John the Baptist is doing

  220. he's preparing the people because

  221. Messiah is about to show up Messiah is

  222. going to be Emmanuel God with us ween

  223. that already in the book. He is the Lord

  224. with us. He shows up and what is he

  225. going to do when he gets here? Well,

  226. Malachi's

  227. illustration is that of a refiner of

  228. silver and gold. John the Baptist

  229. references to uh the burning of chaff,

  230. which we talked about last week. But

  231. here he says that he'll be like a

  232. refiner of silver. What's he talking

  233. about? Well, you take a metal, say it's

  234. silver, and it has some other things

  235. mixed in with it. Maybe somebody had

  236. mixed a little bit cheaper metals in

  237. with the silver to to to make it uh to

  238. make it weigh more but be less silver

  239. and more something else. A refiner will

  240. take the silver or the gold will melt it

  241. down into a liquid and then the slab

  242. will come up to the top and the refiner

  243. will take out those impurities. And if

  244. he does it multiple times, seven times

  245. that that seven representing a perfect

  246. number, it gets more and more pure. And

  247. there's a role in which fire has to play

  248. in the believer's life. God wants to

  249. purify his people. And so when comes up

  250. in our lives, the Holy Spirit will

  251. convince us of sin and it doesn't feel

  252. good. Fire doesn't feel good. But what

  253. happens is as sin is brought to the

  254. surface and the Lord reproves us and we

  255. repent of it and we confess it and we

  256. leave it. God is refining us. So there's

  257. a sense in which fire does have a role

  258. to play in the life of the believer.

  259. But there's another analogy that we see

  260. in the text in Matthew 3. He speaks of a

  261. tree that doesn't bear fruit. What will

  262. happen to it? It'll be burned. It'll be

  263. burned. And that's not merely for

  264. purification. That's talking about

  265. people that name the name. They go to

  266. church, but they don't really know the

  267. Lord. Every tree that doesn't bring

  268. forth good fruit will be burned in the

  269. fire.

  270. Works are an indispensable evidence of

  271. saving faith. We're not saved by works,

  272. but a living faith and the living God

  273. will produce living works. I was talking

  274. with the brother about it the other day

  275. doing a members meeting and talking

  276. about this phrase that that uh it's

  277. indispensable evidence of saving things.

  278. It's like let's say you had a dead

  279. corpse and you heat that dead corpse up

  280. to 98.6 degrees. That's the temperature

  281. of a healthy human being. 98.6 or

  282. something about there. You could heat a

  283. corpse up to 98.6. sick. But guess what?

  284. It's still dead.

  285. Now, a living body will produce heat,

  286. but heating up a body doesn't make it

  287. living, right? A living tree produces

  288. sap.

  289. A living body breathes. A living body

  290. bleeds.

  291. A living faith produces good works. It

  292. produces good fruit. But going out and

  293. trying to manufacture fruit does not

  294. make you living. It comes from a living

  295. tree. It doesn't make the tree living.

  296. evidence of a living tree doesn't make a

  297. living tree living. It's a fruit is a

  298. byproduct of life.

  299. Good works are a byproduct of saving

  300. faith. We're not saved by by works.

  301. We're saved by grace through faith. But

  302. a living faith in the living God will

  303. produce living works. And so John the

  304. Baptist says that every tree that

  305. doesn't bring forth fruit, everyone

  306. who's faking it is not going to make it.

  307. Because when he comes, going to baptize

  308. in the spirit and in fire. Okay, let's

  309. get back to our text here. Let's look at

  310. these two baptizers. Verse 11, back to

  311. Matthew chapter 3, our text. He says, I

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  312. baptize you with water for repentance.

  313. I baptize you with water for repentance.

  314. You know, we we believe in believers

  315. baptism. We don't sprinkle infant. The

  316. word baptism first of all means to

  317. immerse to immerse. It used a ship that

  318. sunk in the harbor. The Greek word a

  319. ship sank in the harbor. It got baptized

  320. in the harbor. It wasn't sprinkled. It

  321. got immersed. It was immersed. They used

  322. it of dying cloths. When you take a

  323. cloth and you immerse it in the dye, you

  324. baptize it in the die. Baptized though.

  325. It's immersion. And and uh he says, "I

  326. indeed baptize you with water.

  327. What is he doing? He's calling people,

  328. turn from your sins.

  329. Confess your sins. Get ready to meet the

  330. Lord. Messiah is about to show up.

  331. Prepare your hearts to meet him. Prepare

  332. your heart. If you're hard-hearted and

  333. Messiah shows up, you'll yawn. But if

  334. you prepare your heart, you're you're

  335. ready for the Lord to show up. Get ready

  336. to meet the Lord. John is saying, I'm

  337. baptizing you for water. But when he

  338. shows up, when the other baptizer shows

  339. up, he's mightier than I. worthy to

  340. untie his shoe.

  341. He says, "He will baptize you with the

  342. Holy Spirit and fire."

  343. Now, Holy Spirit is is the work of God

  344. giving us a new heart. It's the work of

  345. regeneration. It's the work of being

  346. born again. It's the work of becoming a

  347. new creature in Christ Jesus. It's the

  348. work where we go from faking it to

  349. actually being born again. We become new

  350. creatures. No man can do that for you.

  351. Mom and dad can't do it for you. If they

  352. could, they would. No preacher can do it

  353. for you. If I could, I would. The best I

  354. can do is lead you to the lamb. Is lead

  355. to him and say, "Get your eyes on him.

  356. Come to him. He will receive you. He

  357. will forgive you. Cry out to him.

  358. Confess your sins. Get ready to meet the

  359. Lord. Get urgent about it. Ask him. Seek

  360. him until you find him. That's what I

  361. can do. That's what I'm here to do. Seek

  362. the Lord. while there is time

  363. and I can't save you. No human being can

  364. save you.

  365. In John one, we're told he came into his

  366. own and his own received him not. But as

  367. many as received him, to them he gave

  368. the right to become the sons of God. Let

  369. them quit quoting there who were born

  370. not of the will of man, not of the will

  371. of the flesh, but of the spirit of God.

  372. Only God can regenerate. Only God can

  373. take a stony heart and replace it with a

  374. heart of flesh. The best I can do is

  375. point you to the one who baptizes in the

  376. spirit and the fire.

  377. And so that's what John is doing. He

  378. says he will come and he will baptize

  379. with the holy spirit and with fire.

  380. Again quoting verse 11. He will baptize

  381. with holy spirit and fire his winnowing

  382. forces in his hand and he will sear his

  383. threshing floors wheat into the barn

  384. with the chaff he will burn with

  385. quenchable fire. Now I talked about this

  386. at length last week. Chaff is the husk

  387. that's separated from the grain of the

  388. wheat by beating it. And then the

  389. pitchfork throws it in the air and the

  390. wind blows the chaff into one pile and

  391. the wheat into the other pile so that

  392. you can gather the wheat into your barn

  393. and make bread with it. And the chaff is

  394. good for nothing but to be burned. And

  395. this analogy taken from from the Old

  396. Testament, Psalm one, talking about how

  397. the wicked will not stand in the

  398. judgment.

  399. Only stand in the judgment, but they'll

  400. be burned with fire. That's what that's

  401. what the baptism of fire is chiefly

  402. about is judgment.

  403. We see fire is about judgment. Even when

  404. it's the the purifying refining fire of

  405. a silver smith, the picture is God is

  406. judging our sin and he's dealing with it

  407. in our lives and it's not warm fuzzy.

  408. Oh, we used to sing a beautiful song

  409. uh refiner fire. Refiner's fire. My one

  410. desire is to be holy.

  411. a good song and it's a good prayer, but

  412. pray it in sincerity and get ready

  413. because the refiner's fire doesn't it's

  414. not a warm fuzzy all the time.

  415. The sin that we we're given an

  416. opportunity first 11 talks about when we

  417. come to the communion table that we're

  418. to judge ourselves so that we won't be

  419. judged. In other words, we have an

  420. opportunity. If you hear it's best to

  421. hear, you know, they say that experience

  422. is a good teacher but intuition is not.

  423. That's cool. But it's in the right. If

  424. you hear something in God's word and

  425. say, "Oh, I'm not doing that." And I

  426. should be. It's best to judge yourself

  427. and say, "I'm going to start doing

  428. that." That's the painfree way to go.

  429. Right? Or if the Lord says, "Stop doing

  430. that, like, oh, I better stop doing

  431. that." And you stop doing it. That's the

  432. painfree way to go. But if you say, "No,

  433. Lord, I love my sin too much. I'm gonna

  434. let your refiner's fire deal with it."

  435. Well, get ready, brother.

  436. Because when the Lord deals with it

  437. through refiner's fire, fire is not a

  438. painful is not a painless process.

  439. The best way to deal with it for us as

  440. believers once you've been born of the

  441. spirit, now you're a child of God. If

  442. you don't want to get a spanking, then

  443. obey him in the first place. Right?

  444. The rebellious child gets the spanking.

  445. The child that says yes sir, yes ma'am,

  446. with cheerful obedience can avoid the

  447. spanking. But when we refuse to let go,

  448. yes, he's a refiner and the Holy Spirit

  449. will refine us because there's going to

  450. be blind spots. God will use

  451. circumstances to use the conviction of

  452. the Holy Spirit. But I think deeply what

  453. is in view here isn't the refiner's

  454. fire, although it is in Malachi 3, which

  455. is irrelevant to this passage.

  456. He is the fire of judgment that comes on

  457. those that will not repent.

  458. The the Pharisees and the John's

  459. Baptist. And what does he say? He says,

  460. "Well, welcome God. Be great to have you

  461. part of the team." No, he says, "Who

  462. warned you to flee from the what? The

  463. wrath to come.

  464. Messiah is coming and it's not all going

  465. to be warm fuzzy. When Messiah comes,

  466. John the Baptist says it's going to be

  467. wrath. The tree that doesn't bring forth

  468. fruit need for repentance is going to be

  469. burned. So, you better bring forth fruit

  470. that demonstrates sincere genuine

  471. repentance." So the baptism of water is

  472. that baptism whereby you are invited to

  473. repent of your sins and place your faith

  474. in Christ.

  475. Baptism of the spirit is the work that

  476. only Jesus can do. And the baptism of

  477. fire represents the judgment

  478. of God's wrath upon sin.

  479. Now I I mentioned

  480. I mentioned last week that uh

  481. we see in the first chapters of Matthew

  482. they they correlate with the Torah the

  483. first five books of the Bible. Genesis

  484. is a book of origins in Matthew 1. We

  485. read about the origins of Jesus and we

  486. read about the word in Greek appears

  487. twice in the text. The word translated

  488. genealogy is Genesis, Genesis. And the

  489. word translated birth is the word

  490. Genesis. And we talk about other things

  491. about how it represents Genesis. And

  492. that's in Matthew 2. A strong Exodus

  493. theme is there. Out of Egypt, I have

  494. called my son. The slaying of the

  495. infants by Herod like the slaying of

  496. infants by Pharaoh. And Joseph brings

  497. them down into Egypt. And Joseph brings

  498. Jesus down into Egypt. And uh there's a

  499. lot of correlations.

  500. a strong theme in other ways in Matthew

    Matthew 2 chapter mention

  501. chapter 2. And now here in Matthew

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  502. chapter 3, we have a Levite, son of a

  503. priest,

  504. estranged from the temple wearing, By

  505. the way, all Matthew, Mark, and Luke all

  506. mention that he was wearing camel's

  507. hair. It's pretty important. For some

  508. reason, he's not wearing the the golden

  509. crown of the priest. He's not wearing

  510. the soft rayment of a priest. He's

  511. estranged from the temple. You get

  512. access to God. The temple was no longer

  513. the place to do it. It was corrupt. You

  514. had to go out in the wilderness where

  515. God had a messenger. God had a prophet

  516. and he's preparing the way for the Lord.

  517. But he's doing things that you find in

  518. the book of Leviticus. You see

  519. confessions of sin. You see it in

  520. Leviticus. You see baptisms. You see

  521. washings. In Leviticus, you see um and

  522. I'm going to show you. You see baptism

  523. of fire and a baptism of spirit in

  524. Leviticus as well. We're going to look

  525. at it. But first, let me look at I want

  526. to look at the last chapter of Exodus.

  527. This is the Old Testament background

  528. that the New Testament audience would

  529. have been familiar with and oftenimes we

  530. neglect

  531. the very last chapter of Exodus. Okay,

  532. this is the end of the book and and

  533. before there were divisions of books,

  534. this it would have just the one would

  535. have flown right into the other. In

  536. Exodus 4,

  537. this the tabernacle I'm starting Towards

  538. the end of the chapter, I'm not reading

  539. everything, but God would instruct them

  540. to build. The question was last week,

  541. how can sinners approach a holy God? How

  542. can sinners defile approach a clean and

  543. holy God? Well, God set up a tabernacle

  544. where his spirit dwelled, where people

  545. could make sacrifices and approach God

  546. and pray towards God. It was a place of

  547. forgiveness, a place of healing, and it

  548. was a place to make them a holy people

  549. where they met with a holy God. And at

  550. the end of Exodus, Moses has made

  551. everything God commanded to

  552. for a tabernacle, a temple of sorts, a

  553. tent uh that that was made according to

  554. a blueprint so that sinners could get

  555. their sins removed. Okay.

  556. So in verse 39 says, "And he set the

  557. altar of burnt offering at the entrance

  558. of the tabernacle for the meeting." So

  559. the first thing you'd come to when you

  560. get through the fence is there is a

  561. there's an altar where sacrifices would

  562. be made where the offer would lay their

  563. hand on the head of the ram confessing

  564. their sin like John is calling confess

  565. their sin and they would slay their ram

  566. before the Lord and then the priest

  567. would take and offer it up on the altar.

  568. It says uh and offered it on the burnt

  569. offering and the grain offering as the

  570. Lord had commanded Moses. He set the bas

  571. attend a meeting in the altar and put

  572. water in it for washing. Okay. So, after

  573. the altar is this big glass basin that

  574. would hold water. What's that water for?

  575. Well, it was for the cleansing, for the

  576. washing. Later on in the temple, it was

  577. way bigger because it wasn't designed to

  578. be moved. This room was designed to be

  579. emptied even carried through the

  580. wilderness. But God would make this big

  581. brazen labor where they would, some

  582. believe would be baptized. We're going

  583. to see here that they merely wash the

  584. hands and the feet, but later on uh in

  585. the temple, the whole body could be

  586. immersed. But at this time, they would

  587. wash symbolically the hands and the

  588. feet. Verse verse uh 30, he set the

  589. basin between the tent of meeting and

  590. the altar, and put water in it for

  591. washing, which which Moses and Aaron and

  592. his sons washed their hands and their

  593. feet. When they went to the tent of

  594. meeting, and when they approached the

  595. altar, they washed as the Lord commanded

  596. Moses. And he erected the court around

  597. the tabernacle on the altar and

  598. screaming at the gate of the court. So,

  599. Moses finished the work. So, the

  600. tabernacle is done. There's a place for

  601. sacrifice for atonement for sin and

  602. there's a place of washing to cleanse

  603. them. What happened? This is the end.

  604. This is this is the end of the book of

  605. Exodus. Verse 34. And the cloud covered

  606. the tent of meeting and the glory of the

  607. Lord filled the tabernacle. And Moses

  608. was not able to enter the tent of

  609. meeting because the cloud settled on it.

  610. And the glory of the Lord filled the

  611. temple throughout all their journeys.

  612. Whenever the cloud was taken up from

  613. over the tabernacle, the people of

  614. Israel would set out. If the cloud was

  615. not taken up, then they did not set out

  616. till the day that it was taken up. For

  617. the cloud of the Lord was on the

  618. tabernacle by day, and fire was in it by

  619. night, in the sight of the house of

  620. Israel throughout all their journeys.

  621. And that's the end of the book is is the

  622. tabernacle has been established, the

  623. sacrifices are made and what comes down

  624. the cloud. What is the glory cloud? It

  625. is the spirit of God.

  626. They are immersed in the spirit of God.

  627. There's a pillar of cloud by day, a

  628. pillar of fire by night, but they're

  629. literally walking in the spirit of God.

  630. A phrase comes up in the New Testament

  631. we'll look at. They're baptized in the

  632. spirit and the glory clouds as they go

  633. through the wilderness. This is this is

  634. background. So we come to the book of

  635. Leviticus

  636. and Leviticus goes into more details

  637. which immediately follows Exodus. It's

  638. the very next chapters. We get to

  639. chapter 8 and we're told that the

  640. priests go through a cleansing process.

  641. Okay. Verse Leviticus 8 verse 5. I'm

    Leviticus 8:5

  642. skipping all the different types of

  643. sacrifices in the first chapters and I'm

  644. getting down to my point of reence. make

  645. my point clear. And Moses said to the

  646. congregation, "This is the thing that

  647. the Lord has commanded to be done." And

  648. Moses brought Aaron and his sons and he

  649. washed them with water. What's John the

  650. Baptist doing? He's calling them to

  651. confess their sins and he's baptizing

  652. them. He's immersing them. It's

  653. cleansing. It represents washing from

  654. sin. The priests are getting ready to go

  655. into the presence of God and they're

  656. undergoing cleansing.

  657. It's it's background.

  658. Then later on in the next chapter,

  659. Leviticus 9, get excited about this

  660. point coming up. Leviticus 9. And Moses

  661. said, "This is the thing that the Lord

  662. has commanded you to do that the glory

  663. of the Lord may appear to you." Then

  664. Moses said to Aaron, "Draw near to the

  665. altar and offer your sin offering and

  666. your burnt offering, and make atonement

  667. for yourselves and for the people, and

  668. bring the offering of the people and

  669. make atonement for them as the Lord has

  670. commanded." He said that they listen. In

  671. order for God's glory, his spirit to

  672. appear, atonement is going to have to be

  673. made. All right? So, John the Baptist

  674. preparing the way for Jesus. Jesus, the

  675. lamb of God, is going to make atonement

  676. for our sins on the cross so that the

  677. glory of the Lord will be will be

  678. revealed. It's Leviticus chapter nine.

  679. Skipping down a few verses, we read what

  680. happens at the end of Leviticus 9. And

  681. Aaron lifted up his hands toward the

  682. people and blessed them. And he came

  683. down from offering the sin offering and

  684. the burnt offering and the peace

  685. offering. And Moses and Aaron went into

  686. the tent of meeting. And when they came

  687. out, they blessed the people. And the

  688. glory of the Lord appeared to all the

  689. people. And fire came out from before

  690. the Lord and consumed the burnt

  691. offering. And the pieces of fat on the

  692. altar. When all the people saw it, they

  693. shouted and fell on their faces. So when

  694. everything is set in order, what we see?

  695. We see a baptism of spirit. The glory

  696. cloud appears and we see a baptism of

  697. fire on what? On the offering.

  698. Now, why why why is the offering

  699. consumed with fire? They've just laid

  700. their hands on the head of the offering.

  701. What does that represent? The sins of

  702. the offerer is laid on the offering.

  703. When it goes up in fire, it is immersed.

  704. It is engulfed in flames and it ascends

  705. into heaven. By the way, the word uh

  706. burnt offering translated burnt offering

  707. in Hebrew actually means offering of a

  708. sense. It is why they call it a burnt

  709. offering because it goes up in smoke.

  710. But it misses something by calling it

  711. burnt offering instead of ascending

  712. offering. It misses the fact that Jesus

  713. was offered up for our sins. Our sins

  714. were laid on him. The wrath of God was

  715. poured out on him and he ascended into

  716. heaven. He ascends where he makes

  717. intercession for us. But the fire comes

  718. down from heaven and it consumes it

  719. immerses the offering on the spot. And

  720. this is the this is the consecration of

  721. that first tabernacle.

  722. A baptism of spirit, the glory cloud, a

  723. baptism of fire. Fire comes down and

  724. consumes the burnt offering.

  725. It's a picture of Christ who when the

  726. lamb of God, the beloved son of God bore

  727. your sins on the cross. What What does

  728. that laying your hand on the head

  729. represent? The transference of your sins

  730. to the lamb of God who bears the wrath

  731. of God so that the wrath of God is no

  732. longer on you. Jesus was willing to

  733. become the object of wrath by bearing

  734. our sins. He was not a sinner, but he

  735. became sin. He never s not even once but

  736. he became a sin offering for us. He bore

  737. our sins and it went up in fire to

  738. represent God's judgment is poured out

  739. on the offering

  740. so that you the offerer

  741. are now accepted.

  742. All right. Now this is how chapter

  743. Leviticus chapter 9 ends. If you do away

    Leviticus 9 chapter mention

  744. with chapter headings and you just you

  745. know about a thousand years ago we put

  746. chapter put chapters and verses. A

  747. priest put chapters and verses. Thank

  748. him. Well, maybe even thank him for his

  749. work because um it's really convenient

  750. to be able to say go to chapter such and

  751. such and such and such. But but

  752. sometimes we get hung up. We don't keep

  753. reading at the end of a chapter. So what

  754. do we see at the end of chapter nine? We

  755. see the offering consumed and the glory

  756. cloud. They're immersed in the glory,

  757. the spirit of God, and the offering is

  758. immersed in fire. It's baptized in fire.

  759. Let's read the very next verse after

  760. verse 24 of chapter 10.

  761. Now, Naab and Abu, the sons of Aaron,

  762. these guys are Levites.

  763. Each took the sensor and put fire in it

  764. and laid in it and offered unauorized

  765. fire before the Lord have not commanded

  766. them. And fire came out before the Lord

  767. and conceived them and they died before

  768. the Lord. Then Moses said to Aaron,

  769. "This is what the Lord has said among

  770. those who come who are near me, I will

  771. be sanctified and before all the people

  772. I will be glorified." And Aaron held his

  773. feet. Okay? And just a few verse before

  774. fire consumes the offering, now fire

  775. consumes the offerer. Why? Because they

  776. did something the Lord did not command

  777. them to do. Up to this point, you're

  778. Leviticus, even even the end of of the

  779. book of Exodus, it'll say they did all

  780. that the Lord commanded Moses. All that

  781. the Lord commanded Moses. It's a

  782. repeating phrase. All that the Lord

  783. commanded Moses. All that the Lord

  784. commanded Moses. It said over and over

  785. again, they did just as the Lord

  786. commanded Moses. And now we get to a

  787. verse that says they offered strange

  788. fire which the Lord did not command

  789. them.

  790. They did they added something to the

  791. gospel picture that God did not tell

  792. them to do. And the result of adding to

  793. the gospel and type shadow was they got

  794. baptized in fire. Fire consumes them.

  795. Fire immersed them. This is a big

  796. warning to preachers and religious

  797. leaders.

  798. What God commands to be done must be

  799. done.

  800. What God forbids to be done must not be

  801. done.

  802. What God does not command to be done

  803. must not be done.

  804. We're not there. There there's certain

  805. broad categories like we're told to

  806. worship the L Lord in song. And there's

  807. a variety of instruments you can use,

  808. but but we're not to go getting overly

  809. creative with our worship and adding a

  810. bunch of holidays, little things that

  811. God didn't command. I mean, you can

  812. celebrate holidays if you do it under

  813. the Lord, but I can't bind your with

  814. them

  815. because the Lord doesn't command it.

  816. They got creative.

  817. They added they alter. They said, "Oh,

  818. you know what would be really cool? We

  819. could add strange fire." What what's

  820. strange? We don't know. What do they do?

  821. They add something that sparkles when

  822. they burnt it. Like, I got an idea.

  823. Let's Let's add something that that like

  824. kind of goes up in smoke or creates

  825. different colors or creates like fog all

  826. over the place. They got creative. They

  827. got a fog machine and the Lord roasted

  828. them.

  829. He baptized them in fire right on the

  830. spot.

  831. Judgement.

  832. So simultaneously you have a baptism of

  833. spirit. The glory cloud comes down and

  834. you have a baptism of fire on the

  835. offering. Then for the disobedient

  836. there's a baptiz of fire on the offerers

  837. because they were doing something that

  838. it was. See everything in that

  839. tabernacle is a gospel picture.

  840. Everything is a picture in some way of

  841. Christ in the gospel. So if they did the

  842. Lord told them not to do. They're

  843. actually detracting from God's picture.

  844. They're adding a distraction. God wants

  845. our focus on the altar. He wants our

  846. focus on the peace offering. And when

  847. you start doing something Lord, the

  848. offering, the the picture goes off of

  849. Christ. The focus goes off of Christ. It

  850. gets on man.

  851. The preacher is supposed to lead you to

  852. Jesus. It's supposed to lead you to

  853. Christ. The offering, the tabernacle,

  854. the priest were all to be pictures of

  855. Christ. When Christ showed up, they're

  856. like, "Oh, this is what was foreshadowed

  857. by Moses." How do we know that? Because

  858. Hebrews tells us all these things are

  859. types and shadows of Jesus. And when

  860. they got creative, they did something

  861. that was right in their own eyes, but it

  862. wasn't a picture of Jesus.

  863. It was leading people away from Jesus.

  864. We call this the regular principle of

  865. worship. There's three of them. What God

  866. commands to be done must be done. What

  867. God forbids to be done must not be done.

  868. And what God not command to be done must

  869. not be done because who got created and

  870. God baptized him in fire and it wasn't a

  871. warm fuzzy it was a consuming fire our

  872. God is a consuming fire now later on God

  873. will ordain that no longer will they

  874. worship in a tent that they worship in a

  875. temple Solomon would build a temple

  876. exactly a thousand years before Jesus

  877. would show up 104 BC

  878. uh exactly thousand years before Jesus

  879. would come. They build a temple and uh

  880. Solomon is instructed, he's given the

  881. blueprint

  882. and he builds the temple and the day

  883. comes for them to dedicate the temple

  884. and everybody shows up. It's the first

  885. day of service, the grand opening of the

  886. temple in 2 Chronicles 7, look what

  887. happens.

  888. As soon as Solomon finished his prayer,

  889. fire came down from heaven and consumed

  890. the burnt offering and the sacrifices.

  891. Oh, that sounds familiar. That sounds

  892. just like Leviticus 9. And the glory of

  893. the Lord filled the temple. They were

  894. baptized in the spirit. And the priests

  895. could not enter the house of the Lord

  896. because the glory of the Lord filled the

  897. Lord's house. When all the people of

  898. Israel saw the fire come down and the

  899. glory of the Lord on the temple, they

  900. bowed down with their faces to the

  901. ground on the pavement and worshiped and

  902. gave thanks to the Lord saying, "For he

  903. is good for steadfast love endures

  904. forever." We got a pattern here.

  905. Dedication of the tabernacle, glory,

  906. fire, dedication of the temple, glory

  907. and fire. By the way, it's interesting

  908. if you read back in First Chronicles,

  909. the temple was built on the site of an

  910. old threshing floor, which is kind of

  911. interesting. The threshing floor, which

  912. it's interesting that it was a threshing

  913. floor, and there's a lot we could go

  914. into, but my sermon would be two hours

  915. instead of an hour and a half. So I I

  916. won't uh I won't do that to you. But I

  917. want you to see the pattern of baptism

  918. of glory of the spirit, baptism of fire.

  919. The fire consumes the offering,

  920. but not the offerings.

  921. The wrath of God was poured out on the

  922. sun so that you could become an object

  923. of mercy accepted in the world.

  924. That's the power. Now we come to the New

  925. Testament after John the Baptist after

  926. Jesus becomes the sin offering on the

  927. cross and Jesus is about to ascend like

  928. the burnt offering would ascend into

  929. heaven. He's about to send into heaven

  930. and these are some of his last words in

  931. Acts

  932. 16. It says so when they had come

  933. together they asked him Lord will you at

  934. this time restore the kingdom to Israel?

  935. He said to them, "It is not for you to

  936. know the times and seasons until the

  937. father is fixed by his own authority,

  938. but you will receive power when the Holy

  939. Spirit has come upon you and you will be

  940. witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and

  941. Samaria and to the end of the earth."

  942. All right? So, so when the b when the

  943. Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be

  944. empowered to take the gospel to the

  945. nations because the glory of the Lord is

  946. going to fill the earth.

  947. Now the Lord's going to cover the earth

  948. like the waters that cover the sea. And

  949. so God says you're going to need power.

  950. When the spirit comes upon you, you will

  951. be empowered to take the gospel to all

  952. nations. That's what he promises. And

  953. then he ascends into heaven. We won't

  954. read that, but in chapter one, he

  955. ascends into heaven like the burnt

  956. offering and ascended in smoke. So Jesus

  957. ascends into heaven where he's at the

  958. right hand of the father and makes

  959. prayers for us, intercessions for us.

  960. That's chapter one. Acts chapter two.

  961. When the day of Pentecost arrived, they

  962. were all together in one place. And

  963. suddenly there came from heaven a sound

  964. like a mighty rushing

  965. and it filled it filled the entire house

  966. where they were sitting. Oh, sounds like

  967. and divided tongues as of fire appeared

  968. to them and rested on each one of them.

  969. And they were all filled with the Holy

  970. Spirit and began to speak in other

  971. tongues as the spirit gave the

  972. utterance. Now there were dwelling in

  973. Jerusalem, Jews, devout men from every

  974. nation under heaven. And at the sound

  975. the motives came together and they were

  976. bewildered because each one of them was

  977. hearing them speak in his own language.

  978. So on the day of Pentecost,

  979. God gave certain symbols. One, there was

  980. the wind that came like it came and

  981. divided the Red Sea various places. the

  982. winds walk,

  983. the the wind of the spirit, the holy

  984. spirit. Uh he he comes in with this

  985. visible wind that comes in. They're

  986. they're filled with the spirit. So

  987. they're they're baptized in the glory

  988. cloud. And it says divided tongues of

  989. fire is on each one of their heads. Why

  990. is that? Now I've heard there's all

  991. kinds of people that claim they've been

  992. filled with the spirit with with

  993. speaking in tong, but I've never heard

  994. one person tell me that they had a

  995. little flame of

  996. What's the point of the flame of fire?

  997. And you don't read about it anywhere

  998. else in the back. What's the point of

  999. the flame of fire? I think what God is

1000. saying here is this is my new temple.

1001. The tabernacle was set apart and

1002. dedicated with the the manifest presence

1003. of God and the fire coming down and

1004. consuming the altar. Then the temple was

1005. was dedicated with the manifest presence

1006. of God and fire consuming the altar. And

  1007. now here every individual

1008. has a flame of fire over their head.

1009. What does this represent? It represents

1010. that no longer does God dwell in temples

  1011. made with men's hands.

1012. Now you are the temple of God.

1013. Believers with the spirit of God said in

1014. 1 Corinthians 3 says do you not know

1015. that you are the temple of God? If the

1016. spirit of God dwells in you if God's

1017. spirit is in you are the temple of God.

1018. How then should we live? Dear brothers

  1019. and sisters,

1020. how should we occupy our time?

1021. What application does this have for us?

1022. God is saying, listen, it used to be

1023. that the temple is some place you went

1024. three times a year. Now, you are the

  1025. temple of God.

1026. God's spirit has come to live in you.

1027. You are you are the dwell you are a

1028. dwelling place of God. Do you know how

1029. great a glory and an honor that is?

1030. You're to keep your your temple guarded

  1031. and pure and holy.

1032. When God exposes sin in you, you're to

1033. confess it and forsake it because you

1034. are a holy people. Every time God writes

1035. to a community, the Galatians, the

1036. Corinthians, the Ephesians, Paul will

1037. say to the saints that are at Colass, to

1038. the saints that are at Corinth, to the

1039. saints that are at Galatia, to the

1040. saints at Philippi. What does saint

  1041. mean?

1042. Holy. He's saying you are holy.

1043. These are common everyday people. These

1044. are slaves. These are businessmen. These

1045. are moms and wives. These are children.

1046. And yet they're called saints. Saint

1047. isn't something you achieve in heaven.

1048. Satan is something you are. It's the

1049. spirit of God dwells in you. You are the

  1050. temple of God.

1051. The symbol of the fire on every

1052. individual was to say this is the new

1053. temple of God. Now, the temple is still

  1054. standing in Jerusalem,

1055. but the temple had become such a corrupt

1056. place that John the Baptist, the son of

1057. a priest, is out in the wilderness and

1058. camels there because it's no longer what

1059. it was meant to be. It's actually put

1060. under the charge and care of

1061. unbelievers, Sadducees. As I said last

1062. week, they didn't believe in angels.

1063. They didn't believe in the resurrection.

1064. They they believe when you're dead,

  1065. you're dead. Soul asleep.

1066. It was a place of infidels.

1067. It had been made an unclean place. When

1068. Jesus walked into the temple at the

1069. beginning of his ministry, he turns over

1070. tables. He drives out the money

1071. changers. And then at the end of his

1072. ministry, he comes in a second time.

1073. Then he drives out the money changers

1074. and those that were corrupt, saying,

  1075. "This is my father's house. It's

1076. supposed to be a house of prayer for all

1077. nations, but you've made it a tent of

  1078. thieves."

1079. Now the church is baptized in the glory

1080. and the fire is on their head because

1081. from from God's people will come. You

1082. know, I was thinking about it yesterday.

1083. We're out of the abortion clinic. Praise

1084. God. We saw saw a car come in the

1085. parking lot. Sat there for some time. I

  1086. didn't actually notice it. I was

1087. preaching away at the escorts and I have

1088. no idea because they didn't talk to us.

1089. I don't know why they left. I just know

1090. that they pulled in for a while. They

1091. sat there and then they left. We're out

1092. there holding our signs. We're out there

1093. praying. We're playing some worshiping

1094. God and playing music, preaching to the

1095. escorts, calling them to repentance. And

  1096. I was just thinking about u I was

1097. thinking about some of these people. In

  1098. fact, I I believe I told him so. It's

1099. like they have time to repent. You have

1100. time to repent right now.

1101. But if you don't, these words are going

1102. to come back and you'll be reminded the

1103. gospel was presented to you. Christ was

1104. presented to you. God sent you witnesses

1105. to tell you to put your faith in Jesus

1106. Christ, but you would not.

1107. What awaits is a baptism of fire for all

  1108. that reject him.

1109. Fire came out from the the Lord and

1110. consumed and fire comes out from the

1111. from his messengers and it will be a

1112. witness against all those who reject the

1113. gospel. But again, you see this imagery

1114. of baptism of fire, baptism of the

1115. spirit, and in this case, speaking in

1116. tongues. I it's not really on topic, but

1117. I'll say one thing about speaking in

1118. tong. People often miss that at the

  1119. power of

1120. speaking in tong, speaking in other

  1121. languages, divided the nations.

1122. And now it says that they heard the

1123. gospel in their own language.

1124. The significance of the sign is that all

1125. the nations that were divided are being

1126. gathered back together in Christ through

1127. the message of the gospel. That's the

1128. symbolism of speaking in other

1129. languages. That they weren't just

1130. speaking in an unknown tongue. They were

1131. speaking in a known tongue. It's just

1132. not something they knew, right? So

1133. people came from Gaul and and they're

1134. they're hearing the gospel in some

  1135. version of French.

1136. People come from Pontis and Galatia and

1137. they're hearing the gospel in their own

  1138. langage. That was a

1139. Whereas the nations have been divided

1140. and God has been working with house of

1141. Israel, now all nations are welcome to

1142. come to Christ and believe in the

1143. Messiah and receive the forgiveness of

  1144. sins.

1145. All right, go to another passage first

1146. Corinthians. I want to get I want to get

1147. more practical for us as believers. I

1148. think we get the symbolism baptism and

1149. and water is for repentance. Baptism of

1150. spirit takes place in regeneration and

1151. by being in God's presence and living in

  1152. God's presence. I'll talk more about

1153. that in a minute. And baptis baptism of

1154. fire is a picture of judgment. In

1155. firstians 10, it speaks of the the

1156. children of Israel in the wilderness in

1157. the tabernacle out in the wilderness in

1158. terms of baptism. So I want to show you

1159. this isn't just me coming up with this.

1160. Paul has this interpretation. First

1161. Corinthians 10. For I do not want you to

1162. be unaware, brothers, that our fathers

1163. were all under the cloud,

1164. and all passed through the sea, that is

1165. the Red Sea, and all were baptized into

1166. Moses in the cloud and in the sea. You

1167. see, Paul is calling the living under

1168. the shikina, the glory cloud. He's

1169. calling it a baptism. He calls going

1170. through the Red Sea a baptism in water

1171. and being under the cloud of God is a

1172. baptism in the glory cloud. And verse

1173. And all ate the same spiritual food.

1174. Jesus is the man of the bread of life.

1175. John 6. And all drank the same spiritual

1176. drink. Jesus is the water of life.

1177. Johnapter 7. For they drank from the

1178. spiritual rock that followed them. And

1179. the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, most

1180. of them God was not well pleased for

1181. they were overthrown in the wilderness.

1182. Paul makes this. Paul says that when

1183. they were under that glory cloud, they

1184. were immersed in the spirit of God. and

1185. and they were baptized into Moses in the

1186. same way that we have been baptized into

1187. Christ. But he says, "Nevertheless, with

1188. all them, God does not love you." What's

1189. he saying? He's warning us as believers,

1190. just because you've had an experience

  1191. with Christ, it's it's not a reason to

  1192. walk carelessly.

1193. God wants his people to walk carefully.

1194. I believe in perseverance, but I also

1195. believe that God calls us to walk in

  1196. repentance and holiness.

1197. God calls us to live a life of

1198. carefulness before him because we are

1199. the temples of God. Believers indwell by

1200. the Holy Spirit, the creator of heavens

1201. and earth. He dwells in us. We are to

1202. live sensitive to him. We're to walk

1203. carefully. And it's not just for

1204. preachers and clergy and and people in

  1205. full-time ministry. Everyone who's a

1206. believer in Jesus Christ is called to be

  1207. a saint,

1208. to walk in a manner worthy of your

1209. calling. He goes on, he says, "Now these

1210. things took place as examples for us

1211. that we might not desire evil as they

1212. did. Do not be idolattors as some of

1213. them were. As it is written, the people

1214. sat down to eat and drank and rose up to

1215. play. We must not indulge in sexual

1216. immorality as some of them did and

1217. 23,000 fell in a single day." We must

1218. not put Christ to the test as some of

1219. them did and were destroyed by serpents,

1220. nor grumble as some of them did and were

1221. destroyed by the destroyers. Now these

1222. things happened to them as an example

1223. that they were written down for our

1224. instruction on whom the end of the ages

1225. has come. I this person some weeks ago

1226. this this theme of we come out of Egypt

1227. we come out of the world. Everybody gets

  1228. tested.

1229. Everybody gets baptized. Everybody gets

1230. tested as believers. And and Paul is

1231. saying listen a lot of people were

1232. baptized. They lived under the glory

1233. cloud. But what happened to them? They

1234. They they lived as they they just got

  1235. used to it.

  1236. There's a visual representation. They're

1237. walking through the wilderness and at

1238. night there's this pillar of fire. Can

1239. you imagine walking through the desert

1240. and there's this pillar of fire? It's

  1241. supernatural.

1242. Can you imagine that? Every night

1243. looking up and seeing it. And in the

1244. daytime there's this cloud like a pillar

1245. that rises above the camp. And when the

1246. cloud moves they say time to pick up our

1247. friends. Let's follow the cloud. When

1248. the fire moves up the

1249. time to move. As long as the pillar

1250. would stay in one place, they would stay

1251. in one place. When the pillar would

1252. move, they would move. They would walk

1253. in the spirit. They would follow the

1254. cloud. They would follow the pillar of

1255. fire, the pillar of fire by by night and

1256. the pillar of cloud by day. Can you

1257. imagine living under that cloud for 40

1258. years and getting the point? It's like,

  1259. oh yeah, yawn.

1260. Imagine living there and it's just

1261. cloud. Hey, you guys want to do some

  1262. gambling?

1263. You guys want to have an orgy? I did.

1264. 23,000 in one day. Hey, let's get drunk.

1265. Let's play games in front of the

1266. tabernacle and let's make a golden calf.

1267. The glory clouds right there. What's

  1268. wrong with you people?

1269. What's the matter with you? The glory

1270. clown you. How can you How can you make

1271. a golden calf? There's fire on the

1272. mountain. How can you do that?

1273. What would they say to us?

  1274. You've been born again.

1275. You have a better covenant built on

1276. better promises. The spirit of God has

1277. given you a new heart. He's forgiven you

1278. of all your iniquities and all of your

1279. trespasses. He everyone knows me from

1280. the least to the greatest. You're my

1281. people. How can you go after strange

  1282. gods?

1283. They would say, "How how can you fall

1284. into such wicked entertainment? How can

  1285. you become so lukewarm?

1286. What's Paul calling the Corinthians to

1287. do to sin? Be careful. It's amazing how

1288. desensitized human beings can be to sin

1289. and to the spirit of God. It just

1290. becomes like, oh yeah, I go to church.

1291. We hear the word of God there. We sing

1292. songs. We see God's people.

1293. And I go about my daily life and I do

1294. all kinds of things that the Lord

  1295. wouldn't approve of. But it's okay.

  1296. We're saved by grace. That's the

1297. attitude that Paul is warning us about.

1298. They were walking under the glory cloud

1299. and yet they fell into sin. This phrase

1300. walking in the spirit. I want to look at

  1301. one more passage. Galatians

1302. and this is where I'm going to I'm going

1303. to close it out. Two slides. One

1304. passage. Galatians 5. But I say walk by

1305. the spirit. Jesus walked in the spirit

1306. and you will not gratify the desires of

1307. the flesh. just stop there.

1308. What is what is Paul saying? Walk in the

  1309. spirit.

  1310. What's he saying?

1311. It's like we are in the pres.

1312. I believe what Paul is saying here is

1313. like okay the glory God is here. God is

1314. here. So Paul is saying walk in the

1315. realization and the knowledge that God

1316. is with you. Walk in communion with him.

1317. Give God thanks on a daily basis. Read

1318. God's word on a daily basis. Walk

1319. sensitive to his conviction and his Holy

1320. Spirit on a daily basis. Walk with God.

1321. Don't harden yourself to conviction.

1322. Say, "No, Lord, just leave me alone. I

1323. want to do this thing. It's so much

1324. fun." And you drown out the voice of

1325. God. No, that's not what we're doing. He

1326. says, "Walk in the spirit. Walk in

1327. communion with God, and you will not

1328. gratify the desires of the flesh." For

1329. the desires of the flesh are against the

1330. spirit, and the desires of the spirit

1331. are against the flesh. For these are

1332. opposed to each other to keep you from

1333. doing the things you want to do. In

1334. other words, there's two wills in us.

1335. The will of the flesh wants to sin. The

1336. will of the spirit wants to glorify God.

1337. He says, "But if you are led by the

1338. spirit, you are not under the law." In

  1339. other words, evidence, sexual

  1340. immorality, impurity, sensuality,

  1341. idolatry.

  1342. idolatry, sorcery, industry, strife,

  1343. jealousy,

1344. sense of anger, rivalry, deception,

  1345. division, envy, drunkenness, orgying,

1346. and these things like these, I warn you,

1347. as I warned you before, that those who

1348. do such things will not inherit the

  1349. kingdom of God.

1350. But the fruit of the spirit, love, joy,

  1351. peace, patience, kindness, goodness,

  1352. faithfulness, gent

1353. such things there is no law. Those who

1354. belong to Christ Jesus, they crucified

1355. the flesh with his passion and his

1356. all right. So Paul says, walk in the

1357. spirit. And he and he doesn't just

1358. highlight, you know, don't lie and cheat

1359. and steal and commit adultery.

1360. things that are deeply inter our

  1361. personal relationships should be

  1362. affected by

1363. if we're people that have the fruit of

1364. love and joy and patience kindness.

1365. These are delightful people to Jesus.

1366. These are people that are easy to get

  1367. along with.

  1368. Goodness, faithfulness, gent.

1369. This is the fruit of the spirit that

1370. you'd be really nice if we just said

1371. don't commit adultery and lie and cheat

1372. anymore. It's like, okay, I got those

1373. things. But the fruit of the spirit that

1374. he emphasizes the most are the things

1375. that make God's people so beautiful.

  1376. kindness,

  1377. faithfulness to goodness,

  1378. self control.

1379. So in summary, three baptisms,

1380. two baptizers, minister, and there's

  1381. Jesus, the other

  1382. three baptisms, bapting

1383. in Christ for your salvation.

  1384. I don't want to

1385. I'll be embarrassed. No, listen.

1386. You can get baptized in front of the

1387. congregation confessing your sins in

  1388. your face as well.

1389. Baptism of spirit is for power to

1390. empower us. First of all, there's

1391. regeneration whereby we become children

  1392. of God. But secondarily,

1393. a baptism of spirit power. We should the

1394. power to live a holy life and the power

1395. to be witnesses to Jesus.

1396. And the baptism of fire for judgment and

  1397. purification.

1398. That's the baptism that we don't want.

  1399. Don't pray for it.

1400. You can you can pray, "God, help me to

1401. walk in holiness." But uh when when

  1402. you're when you're going through a

1403. baptism of fire, start confessing.

1404. Start forsaking. Better to confess it

1405. and forsake it. Get this thing over

  1406. with.

1407. And finally, we're called to walk in the

1408. spirit. We're called to be holy and to

1409. walk sensitive to the voice of God. Not

  1410. just on Sundays.

  1411. 247 365. We're called to walk

1412. in the spirit under the clouds as

1413. temples of God of the dwelling place of

1414. God. Let us pray. Father, we thank you

1415. God that you are gracious towards us

1416. that you have shown us great love.

1417. We thank you that the beloved son of God

  1418. became the sin bearer,

1419. became the ascending offering, became

1420. the guilt offering, became the

  1421. thanksgiving offering, the peace

1422. offering whereby we have peace with God

  1423. and men.

  1424. Thank you Lord

1425. for taking the wrath that we deserve

1426. upon the cross. Lord, I pray for the

  1427. unbeliever

1428. who's questioning. God, I pray that you

1429. would bring them to the cross.

1430. They would confess their sins.

1431. They would repent and put their trust in

1432. you. God, I pray for us who believe,

1433. myself included. God, help us to walk

1434. carefully as Paul said, to walk in

1435. carefully redeeming the times the days

1436. are. God, I pray that a great

1437. your Holy Spirit to come upon this

  1438. congregation

1439. that we would worship you in reverence

  1440. and godly fear

1441. and with love and joy and gratitude

1442. because you are worthy of those that

1443. would worship you in spirit and truth. I

1444. pray Lord also that the fruit of the

1445. spirit, the love, the joy, the peace,

1446. the kindness, the gentleness that's

1447. mentioned here in Galatians 5 would

  1448. abound

1449. in this church in your people.

1450. It comes from you. It comes from the

1451. root comes from the root.
