  1. Good morning.

  2. We're back in Matthew chapter 4. We just

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  3. had our celebration of the resurrection

  4. last week and

  5. um remembering the Passover. And I was I

  6. was just thinking the text that we're in

  7. was about this time of year

  8. approximately

  9. 2,000 years ago, not even two millennia

  10. ago. Uh, I'm persuaded that Jesus's

  11. ministry began around Passover time in

  12. the year 26 AD. We're told when it

  13. started, 16th year, I believe, 15th year

  14. of the reign of Tiberius. John the

  15. Baptist was preaching and Jesus was

  16. baptized.

  17. Immediately afterwards, he was driven by

  18. the spirit in the wilderness where he

  19. was tested of the devil. And so two

  20. weeks ago, we talked about that text and

  21. how Satan took him up into a high

  22. mountain and showed him the kingdoms of

  23. the world and and basically was saying,

  24. "I can give you this." And I'll add

  25. without a cross.

  26. But we saw how the world and the people

  27. that live therein actually belongs to

  28. God. The earth is the Lord's and the

  29. fullness thereof, and they that dwell

  30. therein. God the Father owned it all.

  31. But God has delegated

  32. the nations to be under different

  33. spiritual entities. And we really went

  34. into that last time. And Satan is

  35. saying, "Hey, I can give you the keys of

  36. this world through my network."

  37. And the inference is without a cross,

  38. but the world itself is not his to give

  39. because the earth is the Lord's and the

  40. fullness thereof, and they that dwell

  41. therein end. Well, this week takes place

  42. uh shortly after that. He's tested of

  43. the devil and he's going to begin his

  44. ministry in 26 AD. I've titled the

  45. sermon the dawning of the kingdom. And

  46. the point of this morning's sermon is

  47. Christ is king. His kingdom expands

  48. progressively as the gospel is

  49. proclaimed, disciples are made, and

  50. supernatural lifech changing power is

  51. displayed. If you stand with me now for

  52. the reading of God's word, we're going

  53. to read in Matthew 4, starting in verse

  54. 12.

  55. Now when he had heard that John had been

  56. arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And

  57. leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in

  58. Capernaam by the sea and the territory

  59. of Zebulun and Nasseri. So that what was

  60. spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be

  61. fulfilled. The land of Zebulun and the

  62. land of Nasseri, the way of the sea

  63. beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the

  64. Gentiles. The people dwelling in

  65. darkness have seen a great light. And

  66. for those dwelling in the region and

  67. shadow of death, on them a light has

  68. dawned.

  69. For that time Jesus began to preach,

  70. saying, "Repent, for the kingdom of

  71. heaven is at hand."

  72. While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he

  73. saw two brothers, Simon, who is called

  74. Peter, and Andrew, his brother, casting

  75. a net into the sea, for they were

  76. fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow

  77. me, and I will make you fishers of men."

  78. And immediately they left their nets and

  79. followed him. And going on from there,

  80. he saw two other brothers, James, the

  81. son of Zebedee, and John, his brother.

  82. In the boat was Zebedee, their father,

  83. mending their nets, and he called them.

  84. Immediately they left the boat and their

  85. father and followed him. And he went

  86. throughout all Galilee teaching in their

  87. synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of

  88. the kingdom and healing every disease

  89. and every affliction among the people.

  90. So his fame spread throughout all Syria.

  91. And they brought him all the sick, those

  92. afflicted with various diseases and

  93. pains, those oppressed by demons, those

  94. having seizures and paralytics. And he

  95. healed them. And great crowds followed

  96. him from Galilee and the decapit and

  97. from Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond

  98. the Jordan. Let's pray. Oh Lord God, we

  99. thank you that indeed the kingdom of

  100. Christ has come into the hearts of us.

  101. We trust and believe in you that your

  102. reign has already been extended into our

  103. hearts. God, we also rejoice that right

  104. now Jesus, the son of man, the son of

  105. God, is ascended to the throne at the

  106. right hand of the father and you rule by

  107. the word of your power. That all

  108. authority in heaven and earth has been

  109. given to you. And you've commissioned us

  110. to go and do what you do in this passage

  111. to make disciples to freely offer

  112. the forgiveness of sins through

  113. repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.

  114. Lord, if there's anyone here this

  115. morning who is yet to come to the

  116. knowledge of you, Lord, I pray that you

  117. would draw them to yourself. Father, I

  118. pray that you would extend your kingdom

  119. into our hearts this morning. That you

  120. would help us, Lord, to submit to you

  121. greater and greater as we see your truth

  122. revealed. We would trust in you and be

  123. bold in our faith for the glory of God

  124. in the Lord Jesus Christ. In Jesus name

  125. I pray. Amen. You may be seated.

  126. So we see here uh the language of dawn

  127. is used. Dawn dawning is when the sun

  128. first begins to show itself and it gets

  129. brighter and brighter and brighter until

  130. the fullness of day. Uh we made

  131. comparisons

  132. made comparisons that originally Adam

  133. was given the world. He was given the

  134. world. He was given dominion over the

  135. world. We hear dominion. We think

  136. politics. But actually, Adam and Eve

  137. were to co-raign over the earth, over

  138. stuff

  139. to be fruitful, multiply, fill the

  140. earth, and subdue it. Subdue it, rule

  141. over it. They were the first king and

  142. queen over the earth. They were going to

  143. have children who were going to fill the

  144. earth and rule over the earth. not to

  145. doineer people but to glorify God and

  146. Godhonoring work and labor. Well, Satan

  147. comes and entices Adam to be autonomous

  148. and independent from God. He says, "Eat

  149. of the tree and you can be as God."

  150. Declaring for yourself what is good and

  151. what is evil. You can make your own

  152. rules.

  153. And this is what is in human nature,

  154. fallen human nature to this day. What we

  155. struggle with is we want to rule

  156. ourselves and our destiny. We want to be

  157. the predestinator. We want to be the

  158. source of law and authority. Humankind

  159. wants to be God.

  160. That's that is the ultimate thing, the

  161. first thing that we need to repent of.

  162. Our desire for self-ruule. When we

  163. repent, we turn from our sins. We are

  164. submitting ourselves to God. And the

  165. other thing that we have to repent of

  166. and turn from is trusting in ourselves

  167. to trusting in Christ and what he has

  168. done for us. Well, Jesus's ministry

  169. begins with the call to repent and

  170. believe the good news, to believe the

  171. gospel. And that call will go out this

  172. morning. But when Adam rebels,

  173. let's say for the metaphor's sake, Adam

  174. is created at high noon and he rebelss.

  175. What happens to the world after Adam's

  176. rebellion?

  177. It grows darker and darker and darker

  178. and darker

  179. until Christ comes. What does the world

  180. look like at the time of Christ? It's a

  181. brutal place. There are no charitable

  182. hospitals.

  183. There there is human sacrifice all over

  184. the globe. Most people are slaves. Short

  185. life expect

  186. people living in the darkness and the

  187. fear of of pagan gods that were actually

  188. real demonic entities and powers that

  189. ruled over territory. The world lived

  190. under this kind of demonic oppression.

  191. They lived in fear. There are still

  192. people to this day living in the

  193. jungles, living in places never heard

  194. the gospel who who fear the word of the

  195. witch doctor who might curse them and

  196. they would die.

  197. real demonic entities, real uh spiritual

  198. intelligences that oppress people and

  199. afflict people.

  200. That's the whole world. The whole world

  201. is practicing human sacrifice. The whole

  202. world is enslaving one another. Slavery

  203. is all over the whole earth.

  204. The place is a dark place where the

  205. spirit of the Lord is. There is liberty.

  206. But the nations have been handed over to

  207. nonholy spirits and people live in fear

  208. and dread.

  209. They torture one another. They do

  210. horrible things. This is the world that

  211. Christ is born into.

  212. And we read in the language of this

  213. passage the language of dawn.

  214. And Adam we see the coming of darkness.

  215. The world by by Genesis 6. God saw the

  216. hearts of men that it was only

  217. continually evil and he sent out a flood

  218. to destroy mankind. The prophets speak

  219. of another, I'll say flood that's to

  220. come yet in the future when the

  221. knowledge of the Lord will cover the

  222. earth like the waters that cover the

  223. sea. There will be a day when the

  224. knowledge of the Lord covers the

  225. continent. Where everywhere you go,

  226. they've heard about Jesus. where

  227. everywhere you go there there's

  228. believers on the Lord Jesus and the

  229. knowledge of the Lord will cover the

  230. earth just like the waters covered the

  231. earth in Noah's day. There's a time in

  232. the future where the knowledge of the

  233. Lord is going to cover the whole earth

  234. like the waters cover the sea. I ask you

  235. again, how much of the sea is covered in

  236. water?

  237. All of it.

  238. A day is yet to come. Has not come yet,

  239. but it will come. It will come people

  240. living in the oppression of Islam in

  241. places like Iran or people living under

  242. the the the frightful doctrines of

  243. Hinduism or Buddhism or communism,

  244. atheistic communism.

  245. There there will be people that fear the

  246. Lord and know his name. The dawn begins

  247. in this chapter. The beginning of the

  248. kingdom spread begins in this chapter.

  249. This chapter thrills me. I love it.

  250. Let's look at it. Hebrews chap Matthew

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  251. chapter 4 starting in verse 12. We'll

  252. look at it verse by verse. Now when he

  253. heard that John had been arrested, he

  254. withdrew in the Galilee. And I probably

  255. could have done a whole slide on that.

  256. John was used to prepare the people for

  257. the coming of Yahweh in flesh. That that

  258. phrase prepare the way of the Lord. It's

  259. you know uppercase L lowercase OD in the

  260. New Testament English. In the Old

  261. Testament, it's all cap LD because it's

  262. Yahweh coming in flesh.

  263. Yahweh has shown up. John the Baptist

  264. has prepared them through a message of

  265. repentance, through a message of turn to

  266. the Lord. Prepare your hearts because

  267. Yahweh is coming. He's coming. The king

  268. is coming. The Messiah is coming. When

  269. when he was done after the baptism, God

  270. is now done with John the Baptist. And

  271. uh shortly thereafter he would be

  272. beheaded. In verse 13 it says, "And

  273. leaving Nazareth, he went and lived

  274. Capernium by the sea and the territory

  275. of Zebulun and Napali, so that what was

  276. spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be

  277. fulfilled. The land of Zebuli and the

  278. land of Neli, the way of the sea beyond

  279. the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the

  280. people dwelling in darkness have seen a

  281. great light." And so those dwelling in

  282. the region and shadow of death, on them

  283. a light has dawned. There's where my

  284. title comes from. The dawning of the

  285. kingdom. The light has dawned. It's the

  286. beginning. It's always darkest before

  287. the dawn, they say. And the world had

  288. come to a very dark point when Christ

  289. comes into it. The light of the world

  290. has now entered in onto the scene and

  291. the light has dawned. Now, uh, so

  292. because John was was persecuted and

  293. people were persecuting, Jesus didn't

  294. stay right there. He goes up north,

  295. close to his hometown, a little way away

  296. from there in the village of Kethan, the

  297. village of Nahum or uh, village of

  298. Pumper is another way of reading it. And

  299. he goes there and he begins to preach.

  300. And this was what in ancient times had

  301. been uh, the territory of Zebulun and

  302. Napali. You remember that Jacob has 12

  303. sons. When Joshua comes into the

  304. promised land, they divide up the the

  305. land of Israel actually into 11 or

  306. actually more than 11 in a sense because

  307. uh Levi didn't get territory, but like

  308. Manasseh gets two. And so the the land

  309. was divided up into 12 sections. And

  310. Nasali and Zedwin received an

  311. inheritance way up north.

  312. Later on, Saul would rule over all of

  313. Israel, the first king. And then David

  314. ru rule all over all Israel. Then

  315. Solomon would rule over all Israel. And

  316. then Riaboam would ascend the throne.

  317. And he had a united kingdom. All 12

  318. tribes were under Riaboam. But because

  319. Riaboam was an oppressor, the people

  320. said, "We're done with you. Too high

  321. taxes." And they broke away and formed

  322. their own kingdom. There was civil war

  323. in Israel. And in the south where

  324. Jerusalem was, there was Jerusalem and

  325. Benjamin uh uh uh sorry, Judah and

  326. Benjamin were down in the south. And way

  327. up north there was Napali and Zebulun.

  328. And this man named Jeroboam became king

  329. over the upper tribes. And he was scared

  330. that the people would return to the king

  331. of Judah, the house of David. And so he

  332. set up two idols in Israel. And he says,

  333. "It's too far for you to go to

  334. Jerusalem." So he set one way up north

  335. and he set one down close to the border

  336. close to Jerusalem so that it was easier

  337. to go worship a golden calf or a calf

  338. than it was to go all the way to

  339. Jerusalem. Well, Judah would have some

  340. good kings and some bad kings, but

  341. Israel had nothing but bad kings. They

  342. were all evil. They were all corrupt.

  343. And they worshiped idols and they fell

  344. into Baal worship. And and so the the

  345. the northern tribes became more

  346. apostate. They fall away from the faith

  347. so badly that in the 700s about 7:21 BC

  348. the Assyrians come in and they conquer

  349. them and take them away captive. Then

  350. Smackareb the Assyrian king tries to

  351. conquer Judah but is unable because God

  352. protects Hezekiah and later they also

  353. would fall to the Babylonians. But there

  354. was this big vision of the kingdom and

  355. the northern tribes fell into darkness,

  356. very bad darkness and idolatry. So at

  357. the time of Christ, the northern area is

  358. has Gentiles, that's why it's called

  359. Galilee of the Gentiles and Israelites.

  360. It's a mixture. Some Gentiles who are

  361. pagans. So if you go away from Jerusalem

  362. up north, there were pagan idols. There

  363. was gymnasiums. By the way, the word

  364. gymnasium in Greek means in the nude.

  365. There's a lot of paganism in the north,

  366. a lot of idolatry. They worship pan. The

  367. they call it the the worship pan up at

  368. Cesaria Philippi. The the area was given

  369. over to idolatry. Where did Jesus go in

  370. his ministry? He goes right into the

  371. most idolatrous part of Israel in the

  372. land of Zebulun and Napali where it was

  373. at its worst. Its land is a little less

  374. holy

  375. because of the idolatry in the history.

  376. But it had originally been given to the

  377. 12 tribes of Israel. Jesus' ministry

  378. will begin in in Zebulun and Nathali.

  379. And that's why it says in verse 15 he

  380. quotes Isaiah the land of Zenon land of

  381. Nazi the way of the sea beyond the

  382. Jordan Galilee of the Gentiles. The

  383. people dwelling in darkness have seen a

  384. great light. They're described as a

  385. people living in darkness. It's been a

  386. long time since Yahweh has been truly

  387. honored there. Yeah. There's there's a

  388. synagogue that's been uncovered right

  389. there in Capernaum. Uh and it's believed

  390. that Peter's house was right across the

  391. street. I think there's really good

  392. evidence that that Peter's house has

  393. been found and and and there's there's

  394. lots of evidence there that you can look

  395. up and find out about and there's an

  396. ancient synagogue there. But a lot of

  397. this area was there with paganism and

  398. that's where Jesus begins his ministry

  399. and the worst part of Israel. It's the

  400. most idolatrous part of Israel and it's

  401. described as a light dawning. Like if

  402. you've ever been out driving, I remember

  403. driving on the highway to go we drove

  404. all night long and we're we're going to

  405. Colorado and uh about the time we're

  406. somewhere in Kansas and and you could

  407. and you see watching um watching the the

  408. world become light or coming home and

  409. watching the world become light,

  410. watching the sunrise and uh the the

  411. world grow brighter. This is the

  412. imagery. the kingdom is dawning. Okay.

  413. Now, for for context, when when the New

  414. Testament quotes a verse,

  415. uh, a lot of times God wants you to go

  416. look up the context and see what it

  417. says. So, I want to read from Isaiah 9.

  418. And I want to show you why I call this

  419. the dawning of the kingdom. In Isaiah 9

  420. 1-3, we have the text that was just

  421. quoted by Matthew.

  422. Says, "But there will be no gloom for

  423. her who was in anguish. In the former

  424. time, he brought into content the land

  425. of Zebulun and the land of Napali. But

  426. in the latter time, he has made glorious

  427. the way of the sea, the land beyond the

  428. Jordan, Galilee of the nations, or

  429. Gentiles. The people who walked in

  430. darkness have seen a great light. Those

  431. who dwelt in the land of deep darkness,

  432. on them a light has shone. You have

  433. multiplied the nation. You have

  434. increased its joy. They rejoice before

  435. you as with joy at the harvest, and they

  436. are glad when they divide the soil. Now,

  437. at the time this is written, this is not

  438. a description of Isaiah's day. It's a

  439. look into the future at the time of

  440. Jesus's day because in Isaiah's day,

  441. they're about to be taken captive by the

  442. Assyrians. So, when it talks about here,

  443. the rejoicing in the joy of harvest and

  444. dividing the spoil, this is talking

  445. about a future time way off in the

  446. distance when Christ will come. Now, if

  447. I skip down to verse six, you're going

  448. to recognize, most of you are going to

  449. recognize this scripture because we read

  450. it at Christmas time. What does it say?

  451. For un for to us a child is born. To us

  452. a son is given. Listen to this. And the

  453. government shall be upon his shoulder.

  454. And his name shall be called wonderful

  455. counselor, mighty God, everlasting

  456. father, prince of peace, of the increase

  457. of his government and of peace. There

  458. will be no end. on the throne of David

  459. and over his kingdom to establish it and

  460. to uphold it with justice and with

  461. righteousness with this from this time

  462. forth and forever more. The zeal of the

  463. Lord of armies, Lord of hosts will do

  464. this. This is very important by quoting

  465. Isaiah nine and looking at the context,

  466. the uses of the word dawn. Dawning of

  467. what? the kingdom and the rule and the

  468. government and the authority of Messiah

  469. who is to come. Now, some say, "Well,

  470. yeah, he came, he demonstrated a little

  471. authority, then he left and he said,

  472. "Well, I'll just let the world go to

  473. hell for a couple thousand years, and

  474. he's going to come back and then he's

  475. going to set up his kingdom." But look

  476. at what it says. It says, "Of the

  477. increase of his government and kingdom,

  478. there will be no end.

  479. It will increase.

  480. It will start in Nazi and Zebulun, but

  481. like a dawn increases. The world under

  482. Adam got darker and darker and darker.

  483. But Christ begins his ministry and it's

  484. like the dawn. It grows brighter and

  485. brighter until the fullness of day. Of

  486. the increase of his government peace,

  487. there will be no end. He said, "Well,

  488. wait a minute. Maybe they hadn't started

  489. yet." He says, um, from this time forth

  490. and forever more.

  491. And who's going to get this done?

  492. the zeal of Yahweh Sabah, the Lord of

  493. the hosts, will do this.

  494. He doesn't say, "Well, I'm I'm hoping

  495. that I have some really smart churchmen

  496. come along and can figure all this out."

  497. No, God is going to do this.

  498. Because when God wants to regenerate the

  499. daddy or regenerate them, when God wants

  500. to call people to himself, he calls them

  501. to himself. It is his pleasure to use us

  502. to preach the gospel, to live out our

  503. faith, to teach the nations, to baptize.

  504. But it's the work of God ultimately.

  505. Yes, he cooperates with the church, but

  506. the zeal of Yahweh Savote is going to

  507. get this done.

  508. That's the good news.

  509. He didn't leave it to us, nor did he

  510. postpone it. It began 2,000 years ago.

  511. quite literally 2,000 years ago in 26 AD

  512. the kingdom began to dawn

  513. and God is going to get it done.

  514. Let me give you another scripture that

  515. teaches this rather than a cataclysmic

  516. coming a progressive growing and

  517. infiltrating. You see it in 1

    1 Corinthians 15:22

  518. Corinthians 15:22. I quote it a lot

  519. because it's one of my favorite

  520. scriptures. 1 Corinthians 15:22. For as

    1 Corinthians 15:22

  521. in Adam all die,

  522. so also in Christ shall all be made

  523. alive, but each in his own own order.

  524. Christ, the first fruits, which we

  525. celebrated last Sunday, resurrection

  526. Sunday, was first fruits, the holiday.

  527. Then at his coming belong to Christ,

  528. then comes the end. Not then is the

  529. beginning. Then comes the end.

  530. When comes the end, when he delivers the

  531. kingdom to God the Father. After, not

  532. before, after destroying every rule and

  533. every authority and power. For he must

  534. reign. How long? Until he has put all

  535. his enemies under his feet.

  536. The last enemy, not the first, the last

  537. enemy to be destroyed is death.

  538. Now, there's some that believe that

  539. there that everything's going to get

  540. worse and worse and worse and then

  541. Christ will come and then it'll get

  542. better. But but here it says, where is

  543. Jesus right now? Where is a physical

  544. body born and where does that body

  545. reside?

  546. I want you to think about it at the very

  547. least. Somebody say it if you got it.

  548. The right hand of the father. How long

  549. is it going to be there?

  550. Well, yeah. until all enemies are put

  551. under his feet and then he's going to

  552. come again.

  553. And the last enemy, not the first, the

  554. last enemy to be destroyed is death. The

  555. Bible is this is called a kayazm.

  556. Adam is dominion in Genesis. Jesus has

  557. complete dominion in Revelation.

  558. Adam brings sin into the world and death

  559. by sin. The last thing to be destroyed

  560. will be death. The world people long

  561. periods of time and there's blessedness

  562. and the world gets darker and darker and

  563. lifes and things get worse and the world

  564. comes into the darkness of paganism and

  565. then Christ's kingdom comes and the

  566. gospel is going to the nations and as it

  567. does we teach the nations repent believe

  568. be baptized observe everything he's

  569. taught us in his word

  570. and and and Jesus says in Matthew 13

  571. it's like the new heaven is like what

  572. like leaven

  573. like leaven that you put in in dough and

  574. it infiltrates the whole lump of dough

  575. and so it expands in the hole with

  576. leaven. He says also before that he says

  577. the kingdom of heaven is like the

  578. mustard seed. It's the tiniest of seeds

  579. in terms of the garden. It's not that

  580. there's not tinier scores than mustard

  581. seeds but for illustration purposes it's

  582. the tiniest of seeds but it grows in the

  583. largest of gardeners. So it is the

  584. kingdom of heaven was small. The dawning

  585. was The beginning was small, like a

  586. little lemon, like a little seed. And

  587. and the barn is just beginning. And it

  588. begins here with Jesus preaching a

  589. message. Verse 17, back to Matthew 4.

  590. From that time, Jesus began to preach

  591. saying, "Repent for the kingdom of

  592. heaven is at hand."

  593. Not far away, not postponed, not wait

  594. till later, but the kingdom of heaven is

  595. at hand. It's here. Not there. is here.

  596. Repent. God's kingdom is here.

  597. It's at hand.

  598. That's the message.

  599. I was going to a museum one time at a

  600. museum. I think it was in Fort Worth,

  601. Texas. And uh the whole the whole museum

  602. was about the battles. Uh it was about

  603. war. Everywhere you go, you look at war.

  604. And there's this Asian man who was

  605. there. And I started talking to him and

  606. he was he was kind of disgusted by it.

  607. and and we had a conversation about it

  608. and you're looking at the exhibit and

  609. showing the concrete doors and the

  610. different things that have interacted

  611. with the state of Texas and he's like

  612. these museums act like the only thing

  613. that there was was was war and all they

  614. cover is war. They don't the the museum

  615. wasn't talking about um the buildings

  616. they built or their art or their

  617. architecture or what they ate or

  618. culture. It was very much focused on

  619. battles that had been won and maybe

  620. reflects the values of the people that

  621. funded the museum. I don't know. But

  622. anthropology feel studies more than just

  623. war archaeology. We archaeologists are

  624. interested in well what do they eat? How

  625. do they live? How do they survive? What

  626. inventions do they have? And and people

  627. look at uh they look at the the

  628. different aspects of the culture. Here's

  629. kind of like a list of things that that

  630. anthropologists or archaeologists will

  631. look into. They they do want to study

  632. their warfare and their battles. That's

  633. a major part of history. Their religion,

  634. their beliefs, the foundations of their

  635. social order, their politics, how they

  636. ruled, how they governed. Education, who

  637. got educated, who didn't and why. Uh

  638. art, what was their art? Expression of

  639. their values and what what they found

  640. valuable. Their music, uh their science,

  641. their philosophy, their technology, food

  642. production and distribution. These are

  643. the kinds of things that that

  644. archaeologists and anthropologists are

  645. interested in. We want to learn about

  646. these people. We want to learn about

  647. these things and people people look look

  648. into, you know, I remember when they

  649. found a guy in a bog over there in

  650. Ireland or Scotland or England or

  651. something like that and looked in his

  652. stomach. What were these people eating?

  653. These are the kinds of things they're

  654. interested in. And it just occurred to

  655. me that that all of these aspects of

  656. culture are things that God's word

  657. speaks to. God's word speaks to

  658. What's just war? What's unjust war?

  659. Christians need to know how to think

  660. about war.

  661. Right? When someone's trying to sell us

  662. a new war, there's a time for war. Bible

  663. says so. That the civil magistrate has

  664. given a sword to punish evildoers and to

  665. defend people from aggression. God's

  666. people need to know how to think

  667. biblically about war.

  668. We need to know how to think biblically

  669. about justice

  670. because there are just wars and there

  671. are unjust wars. If it's just, then

  672. something that sadly must be engaged in.

  673. If it's unjust, it's just more murder

  674. and bloodshed.

  675. God's word should be able to think

  676. biblically about these things.

  677. Obviously, God's word speaks to

  678. religion, but politics, God's word says

  679. a whole lot about justice, punishment of

  680. ter of criminals, what just governance

  681. is. It speaks to it. Uh education,

  682. the book has the book of Proverbs is a

  683. whole book on education. Education isn't

  684. neutral.

  685. Education is designed people a certain

  686. worldview to become a certain kind of

  687. citizen to act certain ways to vote

  688. certain ways to live certain ways. It is

  689. religious in nature. All education is

  690. religious. All of it

  691. because it's all based upon your faith

  692. presuppositions and how you interpret

  693. the world. Education is religious. Art

  694. art has what what you value comes out in

  695. your art. Well, the Bible has a lot to

  696. say about what we value. We're to value

  697. eternal things and good things and holy

  698. things. Art just because it's art isn't

  699. neutral. Art can be wicked. Art can

  700. glorify God. Music, the words of the

  701. music, they teach things. They embody

  702. values. They tell you what you should

  703. pursue after. Dirt music says you need

  704. to go chase the hose, right?

  705. That's more their language. And some

  706. some music points us to Christ, points

  707. us to God. It's not neutral science.

  708. There there wouldn't be a scientific

  709. method without the reformation.

  710. It didn't grow out of a pantheistic

  711. worldview. The scientific method science

  712. can't give an explanation for itself.

  713. It's science itself. It methodology

  714. isn't even testable by I mean something

  715. has to assume by faith. Now why am I

  716. going into all this? Because when how

  717. did Jesus start to advance the kingdom?

  718. Not by raising an army but telling

  719. people to repent. to have a change of

  720. heart and mind. Change your thinking.

  721. When you read repent, it's change your

  722. thinking and values. That's what repent

  723. is telling you to do. I want you to

  724. change your thinking about these things.

  725. If if we study the kingdom of Rome and

  726. Greece and we're interested in their war

  727. and religion and politics or or or the

  728. Aztec or the Maya, these are things

  729. we're interested in. Well, God has a

  730. kingdom and God's kingdom speaks to all

  731. of these things. Christians need to

  732. think biblically about every area of

  733. life.

  734. We're to have a change of heart and mind

  735. about child education,

  736. about music,

  737. about what goes on in the bedroom, about

  738. what goes on in the in the uh the White

  739. House, about what goes on in the Senate,

  740. in the Congress. We're to think like

  741. Christians

  742. because the kingdom of God is an inside

  743. out kingdom, not an outside in kingdom.

  744. Minds change and hearts change. People

  745. come to fear the Lord more than they

  746. fear a man. And wherever there's fear

  747. is, they're to bring the law of God to

  748. bear in that fear. We're to observe all

  749. things he has commanded us.

  750. teach them to observe all things. God's

  751. word speaks to these things. God's

  752. kingdom expands by changing heart and

  753. mind.

  754. Change the thinking. You know, if we

  755. loved our neighbor as oursel and we love

  756. God with our heart, soul, mind, and

  757. strength, we wouldn't even need civil

  758. government. Hardly.

  759. You don't need many cops. And you say,

  760. "Well, yeah, but that's awful extreme."

  761. Well, yeah, but look, it's it's a sli

  762. it's like a a sliding scale. It's a

  763. spectrum, right? There was a time not

  764. long ago where many people, some of you

  765. still do, by the way. I I just had it

  766. happen the other day, like I was with

  767. somebody didn't didn't lock the door in

  768. the car. It's like, it's okay. We're in

  769. Franklin County

  770. yesterday actually. We went for a walk

  771. and and I was like, "Oh, did you lock

  772. the door?" I don't know. Somebody said,

  773. "Oh, it doesn't matter. We're in

  774. Franklin County. It'll be fine." Right?

  775. Which I don't know if that's true or

  776. not. There's a lot of garbage goes on in

  777. Franklin County. But there have been

  778. times if you have a god-fearing

  779. community, locks are less needed. I

  780. remember when I was a child, I was very

  781. impressed by that in a negative way.

  782. When I come to St. Louis, because for

  783. Laura lived in Jeff City, remember at

  784. Christmas going to my grandmother's

  785. house and knocking on the door and she

  786. comes to the door and it takes like a

  787. few minutes to unlock all the locks. She

  788. has like there's a whole series of locks

  789. on the door. Like one lock. I'm like,

  790. why all these locks? because he lived in

  791. fear, right? Stink little.

  792. Well,

  793. when the when the as as the nations

  794. learn, love your neighbor as yourself,

  795. serve one another, seek one another's

  796. wealth.

  797. When what what happens when when the

  798. when when the love of Christ comes into

  799. a heart, comes into a family, comes into

  800. community, well, charitable hospitals

  801. start getting built,

  802. people start serving one another. We we

  803. we you may happen on a steel. Yeah, but

  804. it can happen as a local church, right?

  805. It already is.

  806. I The people I know in this church, the

  807. people I'll say people come here

  808. regularly, there's not one of there's

  809. not one of you that if I had somebody

  810. sitting out on the table that I'd worry

  811. about you coming to my house and

  812. stealing it. Now, that's not necessarily

  813. you want a church that's evangelizing

  814. and bringing new people of the faith and

  815. people are different stages of

  816. development in their walk with Christ. I

  817. get that. But the point is on a small

  818. scale, you can see in the church how the

  819. gospel changes indiv and families and

  820. communities. It's the leaven of the

  821. gospel. It changes hearts and minds. It

  822. changes the way we live. It changes the

  823. way we train our children. It changes

  824. the way we handle our finances. It

  825. changes our entertainment. It changes

  826. our our view of family disciplehip. It

  827. changes education. The kingdom of Christ

  828. changes everything because we're

  829. commanded to take every thought captive

  830. to the obedience of Christ. We do that

  831. by learning what his word says about

  832. every area of life. And God's word

  833. speaks to every area of life. How the

  834. kingdom spread. Verse 18.

  835. He says, "While walking by the Sea of

  836. Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who

  837. is called Peter, and Andrew, his

  838. brother, casting an net into the sea,

  839. for they were fishermen. And he said to

  840. them, "Follow me, and I will make you

  841. fishers of men." Immediately they left

  842. their nets and followed him. And going

  843. on from there, he saw two other

  844. brothers, James, the son of Zebedee and

  845. John his brother, in the boat with

  846. Zebedee, their father, mending their

  847. nets. And he called them. And

  848. immediately they left the boat and their

  849. father and followed him. All right. So,

  850. here's four men with fathers and they're

  851. doing a good thing. He's not asking them

  852. to quit doing a bad thing. They have a

  853. family business. They're trying to

  854. better their life with what God has

  855. given them. They're fishermen. Good,

  856. honest trade. There's nothing wrong with

  857. it. There's a lot of things. There's

  858. nothing wrong with it in and of itself.

  859. But when Christ beckons, we are tonged.

  860. The kingdom spreads by disciplehip, by

  861. making disciples. Jesus will pour

  862. himself into these men for three years.

  863. They will learn his teachings. They will

  864. have them memorized.

  865. They will have the sermon on the mount

  866. memorized. These are preachers at

  867. multiple times. They they will watch how

  868. he lives. They will watch how he walks.

  869. They will watch how he interacts with

  870. others like a father walks with his son

  871. doing that Deuteronomy 6 thing. Jesus

  872. will walk with his disciples. And when

  873. they are fully taught, they will be as

  874. his master. They will be transformed by

  875. learning how to live, how to think, how

  876. to talk. They will be changed. And the

  877. things that they learn, as Paul told

  878. Timothy, the things that you have heard

  879. of me in the presence of many witness

  880. teach

  881. that they can teach others also. This is

  882. the pattern.

  883. We learn God's word. We teach it to our

  884. children. They grow up. They have

  885. children. We evangelize. We teach people

  886. to fight. We teach them, "Observe all

  887. things that I have commanded you. Let

  888. him stole steal no more.

  889. You were sexually immoral in the past.

  890. From here on out, you're to live pure

  891. and shame.

  892. Before you engaged in filthy talk and

  893. filthy jokes. Now you're to speak with

  894. purity." And as you learn, you model it.

  895. It spreads like leaven spreads. The

  896. kingdom spreads through disciplehip. The

  897. book of Matthew ends with all authority

  898. is given to me in heaven and in earth.

  899. In consequence, therefore, go and make

  900. disciples.

  901. Baptize them in the father and of the

  902. son and of the holy spirit. Teaching

  903. them to observe all things I have

  904. commanded you. And who's going to

  905. perform this? The lord of I am with you

  906. always to the end of the age.

  907. Disciplehip.

  908. We're all called to be disciples.

  909. The disciple call goes beyond the 12.

  910. Later on in Luke 12:25,

    Luke 12:25

  911. it's another passage that kind of

  912. mirrors this. The great crowds part.

  913. Now, great crowds accompanied him. And

  914. he turned and said to them, "If anyone

  915. comes to me and does not hate his father

  916. or mother or wife and children and

  917. brothers and sisters, yes, and even his

  918. own life, he cannot be my disciple.

  919. Whoever does not bear his own cross and

  920. come after me cannot be my disciple."

  921. Lots of people will follow at a

  922. distance. But he says, "If you're going

  923. to be my disciple, pick up your cross

  924. and follow me." Later on, many of these

  925. crowds would would not follow him. And

  926. when he says you got to love mother and

  927. father and wife and children hate hate

  928. them is one of the language this is an

  929. idiom it's saying that from I think of

  930. two things one is your love for others

  931. including yourself needs to be secondary

  932. to your love for God before self before

  933. family. God before country

  934. God before all. Uh but second of all um

  935. uh sometimes it feels like change to

  936. people you know for the for the for the

  937. the young for the not necessarily young

  938. for the Christian man and woman over in

  939. Iran right now who's just come to faith

  940. in Christ there's multitudes of them has

  941. been for years

  942. that if if they go to their Muslim

  943. father their Muslim brother their Muslim

  944. uncle the Muslim mother there many of

  945. many Christians have been beaten death

  946. were tortured to death by their own

  947. family members

  948. and it's like why why do you hate us son

  949. what have we done to you why would you

  950. do this why would you become a Christian

  951. there's a famous martyr a lady named

  952. Perpeta who was of a upper class her her

  953. father was a prominent man and uh and

  954. she was thrown in prison for the for

  955. naming the name of Christ and her father

  956. comes to him to her yells at abuses her.

  957. Like, what have I done? Have I not been

  958. a good father? Why can't you just say

  959. Why can't you just say that Caesar is

  960. Lord and reject him? You can believe

  961. whatever you want in your heart. Just

  962. say the words. It's insane. Why won't

  963. you just say it and then later you can

  964. repent the Father? Can I How? What is

  965. this? Is it What is this? It's a It's a

  966. base. It's a bond. But can I call it

  967. anything but what it is? Well, no, you

  968. can't. It's what it is. I cannot call

  969. myself anything but Christian.

  970. And

  971. and her friends would go to their death

  972. in the arena refusing to deny Christ.

  973. Now, why do they want to kill them in

  974. the first place?

  975. Because Caesar found Christians to be a

  976. threat because Christians proclaimed

  977. that there was a Lord who was over

  978. Caesar. In fact, Romans 13, Caesar is

  979. his deacon, his minister.

  980. And that was a threat to the power of

  981. Rome.

  982. They recognized Rome cannot continue as

  983. it is. And Christianity, it's one or the

  984. other. They were right. It's the one,

  985. not the other.

  986. If you're going to be a disciple, we

  987. have to be ready to suffer.

  988. But what makes us oftenimes suffer is

  989. when our life brings us the contrast,

  990. brings us into conflict with the status

  991. quo that is anti.

  992. Now, just sitting in your church and

  993. singing songs and saying, "Oh, well, we

  994. don't have anything to do with the

  995. world." doesn't isn't a threat to the

  996. powers that be. When you start

  997. proclaiming that Jesus Christ is Lord

  998. over everything,

  999. then it's a threat. It's a threat to the

1000. idol makers, for the silver smiths. It's

1001. a threat to the powers that be and it

1002. and it and it invites persecution. All

1003. right. Matthew 4:23. Back to the

    Matthew 4:23

1004. passage. And he went throughout all

1005. Galilee teaching in their synagogue and

1006. proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom

1007. and healing every disease and every

1008. affliction among the people. So, spread

1009. throughout all Syria and they brought

1010. him all the sick, those afflicted with

1011. various diseases and pains, those

1012. oppressed by demons, those having

1013. seizures and paralytics and he healed

  1014. them.

1015. The kingdom spread supernaturally. It's

1016. not just left to our intelligence.

1017. It's not remember the zeal of the Lord

1018. of those shall perform this.

  1019. Jesus heals.

1020. He delivers the oppressed of demons.

  1021. Demons are real.

1022. For a long time, the the the atheists,

1023. the agnostics have laughed at at at the

  1024. supernatural. Pagans aren't laughing.

1025. All the world, the whole world knows

1026. that demons are real. It's just in the

1027. West, uh, the Enlightenment has

1028. convinced a lot of people that there are

1029. no demons. I remember some years ago,

  1030. there was a a Drudge Report article. I

1031. think it was back in 2012, a judge

1032. report article about a case in Gary,

  1033. Indiana

1034. where uh this kid was there was there

1035. was police I looked it up to confirm it.

1036. You can you can look this up. You look

1037. up Gary, Indiana, demonic possession,

1038. wild stuff. This kid was seen by

1039. doctors, by police officers, by social

1040. workers. A kid was seen walking up the

  1041. wall backwards,

1042. including psychologist. It was like

1043. recorded. It was a big deal. was in

1044. public news and and it's like, oh, that

1045. can't happen. It has to be a lie. When

1046. you got multiple witnesses saying they

  1047. thought, police officers, doctors,

  1048. nurses, psychologists,

1049. that sounds farfetched to you, but can't

1050. walk up the wall. It can't happen. Uh

1051. there is a supernatural world. Demons

  1052. are real.

  1053. They're real. There's a reason why all

1054. the nations believe in their gods. It's

1055. because they're deceived by demonic

  1056. powers.

1057. And when Christ his kingdom expands, he

1058. deals with those demonic entities.

1059. That's the way the kingdom is spread.

1060. Matthew 12:26 going on a little later in

    Matthew 12:26

1061. the book, uh they they they say Jesus

1062. casting out devils by the prince of

1063. devils. In verse 26 says, "If Satan cast

1064. out Satan, he is divided against

1065. himself. How then will his kingdom

1066. stand? And if I cast out demon by demons

1067. by beelible, by whom do your sons cast

1068. them out? Therefore, they will be your

1069. judges. But if it is by the spirit of

1070. God that I cast out demons, then the

1071. kingdom of God has come upon you has

  1072. come past tense.

  1073. He's telling I'm casting out demons.

1074. What you're witnessing is the

1075. advancement of the kingdom of God. The

1076. kingdom of God is advancing as Jesus is

1077. delivering people from the oppression of

1078. the of the enemy of the of the devil.

1079. And so it still is. One of the practical

1080. calls of the gospel is submit yourselves

1081. to God. Resist the devil. and he will

1082. flee from you. We don't need holy water.

1083. We don't need crucifixes. We don't need

1084. sage. We don't need a bunch of hocus

1085. pocus. We need the authority of the Lord

1086. Jesus Christ. In the name of the Lord

1087. Jesus Christ, come out. Depart. Be gone.

1088. But we begin with the gospel.

1089. We begin with the gospel. Have you

1090. submitted yourself to God? If you're out

1091. here playing with Ouija boards and

1092. playing with tarot cards, you've invited

1093. them in. You need to repent and believe

1094. the gospel. If you will submit yourself

1095. to the shepherd, the wolves will flee.

1096. You don't need a priest, not an earthly

1097. one. You need the high priest, the Lord

1098. Jesus, to come and deliver them. This

1099. this is a reality after the resurrection

1100. of Christ. I want you to look at Acts 19

    Acts 19:8–12

1101. verse 8-12. This is Paul here. I want

1102. you to notice that Paul proclaims the

1103. kingdom of God. This is after the

1104. resurrection that part of the message of

1105. some say, "Oh, well, yeah, Jesus

1106. preached the kingdom of God, but not

1107. Paul." No, here Paul is preaching the

1108. kingdom of God. Verse eight, "And he

1109. entered the synagogue and for three

1110. months spoke boldly, reasoning and

1111. persuading him about the kingdom of

  1112. God." There's a place for reason. It's a

1113. place for logic. That has its place

1114. about what? The kingdom of God. But when

1115. some became stubborn and continued in

1116. unbelief, speaking evil way before the

1117. congregation, he withdrew from them and

1118. took the disciples with them, reasoning

1119. daily in the hall of tyrannic.

1120. This continued for two years so that all

1121. the residents of Asia heard the word of

1122. the Lord, both Jews and Greeks. And God

1123. was doing extraordinary miracles by the

1124. hands of Paul. Even handkerchiefs or

1125. aprons that had touched his skin were

1126. carried away to the sick and his

1127. diseases left them and the evil spirits

1128. came out of them. So Paul was

1129. proclaiming the kingdom and God was

1130. working supernaturally and people were

1131. being transformed. But the message he

1132. was reasoning about was the kingdom of

1133. God. Part of that message is your

  1134. personal salvation.

1135. Are you ready to meet the Lord? And you

1136. know what? Honestly, it's going to be

1137. the one issue I'm going to go to if

1138. someone's dying on their deathbed. If

  1139. I'm going to somebody's be bedside, I'm

1140. probably not going to talk a lot about

1141. how God's word is applicable to politics

1142. and science. What am I going to What

1143. must I do to be saved?

1144. Repent of your sins and put your faith

  1145. in the Lord Jesus.

1146. Put your faith in the Lord Jesus. Call

  1147. out to him.

  1148. That's a message of personal salvation.

1149. It's a glorious message. In our last

1150. hours, it'll be the most comforting of

  1151. messages. Absolutely.

1152. But we have to preach the whole council

1153. of God to the church. We have to teach

1154. the church to observe all things he has

1155. commanded us. It is a a message that

1156. touches every area of life. And some

1157. have reduced the gospel to merely a how

1158. do I get to heaven? That's an important

1159. message. Absolutely. But the gospel of

1160. the kingdom is how do I live as a

  1161. citizen of King Jesus

1162. because his word applies to all areas.

  1163. All areas.

1164. Verse 25. And great crowds. Back to

1165. Matthew 4:25. And great crowds followed

    Matthew 4:25

1166. him from Galilee and the decathlas and

1167. from Jerusalem and Judea and from beyond

1168. the Jordan. Great crowds followed.

1169. Some of those great crowds would later

1170. cry out crucify him. And many of them

1171. would later come back having heard of

1172. Jesus resurrection and would believe

1173. because multitudes of his generation did

1174. come to saving faith before they left

1175. the world. If some of them would fall

1176. away saying, "Well, I was expecting

1177. Jesus to overthrow Rome." When he says,

1178. "My kingdom is not of this world. My

1179. kingdom is not from this world." And it

1180. doesn't advance the way that Satan

1181. offered in the kingdom through political

1182. entry. It advances through the changing

1183. of hearts and minds and the preaching of

1184. the gospel. That's not to say that if

  1185. there's a civil magistrate, we shouldn't

1186. teach him what God's word says about

  1187. justice.

1188. And somebody say, "Well, Christians

1189. shouldn't be involved in politics."

1190. Okay, so Christians shouldn't get

1191. involved in stopping the slave trade,

1192. just to be clear. And Christians

1193. shouldn't be concerned about human

1194. trafficking. We should leave them alone.

  1195. And Christians shouldn't be shouldn't be

1196. worried about their neighbors being

1197. molested, we should leave that politics

1198. stuff alone, right? And when when those

1199. houses are devoured, we should keep our

1200. mouth shut, right? And when babies are

1201. torn apart in a mother's womb, we we

1202. should keep silent because God doesn't

1203. want Christians involved in anything

1204. political. No. If you love your

1205. neighbor, you want to deliver them from

1206. oppression and theft and slaughter.

  1207. Christians should be concerned.

1208. So there is a place for teaching the

1209. magistrate from God's word what justice

1210. is, what the what his limited scope of

  1211. authority is.

1212. This concept of limited government and

1213. his concept of servant leadership taught

1214. in scripture. Taught in scripture.

1215. limited government because the king

1216. doesn't have authority over my family

1217. and things that God directly told my

1218. family to do. Nor does the king have

1219. authority over the church. The church is

1220. directly under the Lord Jesus Christ.

1221. That is why the church is taxexempt.

1222. That is why Congress dare not pass a law

1223. including a tax law against it because

1224. it's not under their jurisdiction.

1225. There's a limit to the jurisdiction of

  1226. Congress. There's a limit to the

1227. jurisdiction of the civil magistrate.

1228. There's a limit to the jurisdiction of

1229. the church. Pastors have no b no no

1230. business telling you which car to buy or

1231. not to to buy. Right? It's your family

  1232. business.

1233. Lots of things that the church has no

1234. business in. But but Christ word speaks

1235. to all of these things.

1236. All right. Great multitudes followed

1237. him. Not all believed. I want to look at

  1238. one more scripture.

1239. and then read my conclusion. Ephesians 5

1240. 5-12. This is something practical here

1241. for us. Been talking about dawning in

1242. light and light increasing etc.

1243. Ephesians 5 it says for you may be sure

1244. of this that everyone who is sexually

1245. immoral or impure or is covetous that is

1246. an idoltor has no inheritance in the

1247. kingdom of Christ of God. There we're

1248. talking about the kingdom again. Let no

1249. one deceive you with empty words. For

1250. because of these things, the wrath of

1251. God comes upon the sons of disobedience.

1252. Therefore, do not become partners with

1253. them. For at one time you were darkness,

1254. but now you are light in the Lord. Walk

1255. as children of light. For the fruit of

1256. light is found in all that is good and

1257. right and true. And try to discern what

1258. is pleasing to the Lord. take no part in

1259. the unfruitful works of darkness, but

1260. instead expose them for is shameful,

1261. evil, even to speak of the things that

1262. they do in secret. So, as children of

1263. light, we're not to partner with

  1264. darkness.

  1265. We're to expose darkness.

1266. And we're to basically through teaching

1267. the nations, we're to expose the

1268. darkness through the light of God's

1269. word. Many times God's word is called

  1270. light.

1271. The light of the law. The law. The law

1272. of the Lord is a lamp into my feet,

  1273. light into my path.

1274. The law brings light. God's word brings

1275. life. And as Christians, you are all

1276. called in your sphere. Whatever you are,

1277. whatever your occupation is, if you're a

1278. domestic engineer, aka mom, you're to

1279. bring God's light to bear in the

1280. teaching of your children and the

1281. discipline of your children and the

1282. running of your household and the

  1283. athletics of your household.

1284. You're you're to do it to the glory of

1285. Christ with contentment and joy.

1286. If you're if you're working in IT, if

1287. you're working in the trade, if you're

1288. working in civic, whatever your area is,

1289. working in law, working working as a

1290. merchant, working in sales, you're to do

1291. it to the glory of God. Whether you eat

1292. or drink or whatsoever you do, do all to

1293. the glory of God. And we learn what

1294. God's word says. We apply it. We do it.

1295. And we are light. You become a light in

1296. a dark place to people who are yet to

1297. see the light of the gospel. We're to

1298. live it out as children of light. Christ

1299. is the light of the world. As children

1300. of light, we're to bring the light of

1301. Christ to bear in our spirit, in our

1302. neighborhoods, in the workplace, in the

1303. and the in the place of commerce. You're

1304. to bring the light of Christ to bear.

1305. And through this gradually like leaven

1306. works its way through the whole lump of

1307. dough. The kingdom of God expands.

1308. She said you are the light of the world.

1309. You are the light of the world. A city

1310. on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men

1311. light a candle and put it under a

1312. basket. They put it on a candlestick and

1313. give light to all the house. Let your

1314. light so shine before men that they may

1315. see your good works and glorify your

1316. father which is in heaven. This is how

1317. the gospel expands and spreads.

  1318. It's not in a threatening way. Put a

1319. sword to someone's throat and say,

1320. "Repent, I'm going to burn you at the

  1321. stake." That's some panic.

1322. It's by being right and pointing people

1323. to the savior. And that's what God's

1324. people do. All right. I preached on this

1325. years ago and I wrote a poem as a

1326. summary. And uh I want to read it for

1327. you this morning. It's a summary of the

1328. points of the poem and I'll conclude

1329. with that. in a few minutes. The dawning

  1330. of the kingdom.

  1331. Without Adam's transgression began a

1332. decline. The world became wicked and

1333. violent with crying. Adultery, rape,

1334. murder, lying, and theft, oppressing the

1335. poor, so nothing was left. They

1336. sacrificed to idols, their sons and

1337. their daughters. They did not honor

1338. their mothers and fathers. Having

1339. forgotten the promise to Adam and Eve,

1340. they followed those gods and did as they

1341. choose. Then came the day ministry had

1342. begun in the land of Napali and Zebulun.

1343. Those that sat in darkness saw a great

1344. light bringing a new day while

1345. dispelling the night. If they would turn

1346. from their sin and do right, they must

1347. turn from their sin to the son who gives

1348. light. This Jesus proclaiming throughout

1349. all the land, repent for the kingdom of

1350. God is at hand. By at hand, he imag the

1351. kingdom is near. Not far in the future,

1352. but already here. A new kingdom was

1353. dawning. Time to quit yawning. There's

1354. work to be done in the light of his son.

1355. The call to repent is more than quitting

1356. sin. It's really a call to come and

1357. follow him, to be a disciple and learn

1358. his way, to walk by faith, trust, and

1359. obey. In Matthew 4:17, Jesus commands to

    Matthew 4:17

1360. repent and get ready for the kingdom of

1361. heaven. Soon, he will tell them how to

1362. repent in Matthew 5:6 and 7. Next, we

    Matthew 5:6

1363. see Peter and Andrew and James and John

1364. working hard, catching fish for

1365. something to live on, still building a

1366. family business. They were yearning for

1367. more when suddenly the master spoke from

1368. the shore. Come and follow me, came the

1369. beckoning call. They immediately their

1370. neck boats and all. Repent, believe,

1371. forsake and follow. For some, this car

1372. call is hard to swallow. Like the rich

1373. young ruler who possessed so much, or

1374. the Pharisees who were too holy to

1375. touch, or the Sadducees with political

1376. power, or multitudes who waited for a

1377. convenient hour. Excuses, excuses. What

1378. can excuse us? If we gain, the whole

1379. world will finally lose us. Our souls

1380. are more precious than silver or gold.

1381. When Jesus calls, don't ask questions as

1382. he is told. Next, Jesus continued in

1383. Galilee, teaching multitudes by land and

1384. sea, casting out devils and healing

1385. diseases. The demons were learning Jesus

1386. does as he pleases because he's the king

1387. and this is his dominion. What Satan is

1388. selling isn't his or his minion. He's an

1389. impostor without title or deed. This

1390. isn't his will. He cannot succeed. The

1391. son has now crushed the serpent's head.

1392. Having died for our sins and rose from

1393. the dead. He ascended to heaven and at

1394. the right hand of power. He waits for

1395. the father to tell him the hour to come

1396. for the church and end his m this mass

1397. that began the day when Adam

1398. transgressed. Multitudes followed him as

  1399. in our generation.

1400. But how many fell into spiritual

1401. stagnation? The sunlight should grow

1402. brighter the longer we live because

1403. truth isn't exhaustable. He has more

1404. light to give. So if you would live well

1405. a li life well worth living, there is

1406. only one lifetime you have for the

1407. giving. So pick up your sword and join

1408. in the fighting the darkness as soldiers

  1409. of the light.

  1410. Let's pray.

1411. Lord God, we do thank you, Father, for

  1412. the joyful, optimistic, glorious

1413. message, not just the forgiveness of

  1414. sins,

1415. but for the fact that Christ, you are a

1416. king. You rule. You are the most

1417. benevolent of kings. You love your

1418. people so much that you were willing to

1419. go to the cross to die for our sins. We

1420. thank you, Lord, for this forgiveness.

1421. It's our pleasure. It's our honor to get

1422. to work with you. for you to glorify you

1423. by good works that we were created to

1424. walk in. Lord, I pray that you would

1425. change our hearts and minds, that you

1426. would renew our thinking, that you would

1427. teach us each how to honor you and the

1428. sphere of authority that you have given

1429. to us. You are worthy, Lord, of lives

1430. laid down for your glory and for your

1431. honor. Teach us to seek you early, to

1432. love you with all of our hearts, to

1433. cherish your pleasure, and to honor you.
