  1. We're going to continue in Matthew

  2. chapter five this morning. Um,

  3. the other day Stephen said something

  4. about I mentioned some passage in

  5. Matthew. So, yeah, when we get there in

  6. five years,

  7. uh, I am not in a hurry to get through

  8. the words of our Lord in the book of

  9. Matthew. Uh, the sermon on the mount is

  10. so practical. It's so needed. We all

  11. need it. We need it in our heart. We

  12. need it in our life. We need to be

  13. formed by this and I don't want to hurry

  14. through it. I want to take the time. I I

  15. I intend to repeat myself. Uh hopefully

  16. it's it's edifying to this body and we

  17. grow as we go through it because this is

  18. this is here the first teaching of our

  19. Lord to his disciples was the sermon on

  20. the mount. And this morning my title is

  21. the heart of murder. We'll be in Matthew

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  22. chapter 5 starting verse 17.

  23. The heart of murder. And the point of

  24. this morning's sermon is murder begins

  25. in the heart. To be right with God, we

  26. must repent of the root sin of murder.

  27. God doesn't just look at the results,

  28. the outward actions. He looks at the

  29. heart. And this isn't merely a New

  30. Testament teaching. This is found in the

  31. Old Testament. Motive is important. And

  32. many times when we read about murder,

  33. the motive is given. The murder of

  34. hatred or envy or uh some some other

  35. bitter jealousy is given for murder. And

  36. so God sees the end from the beginning.

  37. He sees what we would do if we could do

  38. without consequences.

  39. And and sometimes we'll say things about

  40. ourselves, well I would never do fill in

  41. the blank sin. Have you been tempted in

  42. that sense? Have you been tried in that

  43. way? Have you been in the same

  44. circumstances as the people that commit

  45. those sins. We don't really know what we

  46. would do if we could do what we would do

  47. without constraints. And we don't know

  48. what we would do if we could do it if we

  49. had the power to do whatever we wanted.

  50. God knows our heart. Many times people

  51. say that, "Well, God knows my heart."

  52. And usually when people say, "Well, God

  53. knows my heart." Is God knows I have a

  54. good heart. I just do bad things. No,

  55. it's actually the opposite. You have a

  56. bad heart, you just do some good things,

  57. right? The human heart in it fallen

  58. condition is desperately wicked. Who can

  59. know it? Jeremiah 17:9. And Jesus

    Jeremiah 17:9

  60. doesn't merely want to work on our

  61. externals. He wants to change us from

  62. the inside out. He wants to transform us

  63. from the inside out. He wants to start

  64. in in the core of our being, not the

  65. outer of our being. He doesn't just go

  66. to the individual in the sermon on the

  67. mount. He goes to the heart of the

  68. individual. He wants to transform the

  69. way that we think. And if our hearts are

  70. transformed, our community will be

  71. transformed. We wouldn't we wouldn't

  72. need coins. We wouldn't need judges. We

  73. could beat our swords into plowshirts if

  74. the heart of man was changed. And so

  75. Jesus addresses the heart. The heart of

  76. the issue is the heart of man. And we're

  77. going to be reading about that this

  78. morning in Matthew chapter 5 starting at

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  79. verse 17.

  80. If you would stand now for the reading

  81. of God's word. We'll read our text.

  82. Do not think that I have come to abolish

  83. the law or the prophets. I have not come

  84. to abolish them, but to fulfill them.

  85. For truly I say to you, until heaven and

  86. earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot,

  87. will pass from the law until all is

  88. accomplished. Therefore, whoever relaxes

  89. one of the least of these commandments

  90. and teaches others to do the same will

  91. be called least in the kingdom of

  92. heaven. But whoever does them and

  93. teaches them will be called great in the

  94. kingdom of heaven. For I tell you,

  95. unless your righteousness exceeds that

  96. of the scribes and the Pharisees, you

  97. will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

  98. You have heard that it was said by those

  99. of old, "You shall not murder." And

  100. whoever murders will be liable to

  101. judgment. But I say to you that everyone

  102. who is angry with his brother will be

  103. liable to judgment. Whoever insults his

  104. brother will be liable to the council.

  105. And whoever says, "Few, fool," will be

  106. liable to the hell of fire. So if you

  107. are offering your gift at the altar and

  108. there remember that your brother has

  109. something against you, leave your gift

  110. there before the altar and go first be

  111. reconciled to your brother and then come

  112. and offer your gift. Come to terms

  113. quickly with your accuser while you are

  114. going with him to court. Let your

  115. accuser hand you over to the judge and

  116. the judge to the guard and you be put in

  117. prison. Truly I say to you, you will

  118. never get out until you have paid the

  119. last penny. Lord God, we thank you this

  120. morning that you came not to leave us

  121. where we're at. You accept us where

  122. we're at in our sins and our fails. That

  123. you don't intend to leave us where we're

  124. at. You want to transform your people.

  125. And so we shall be transformed by the

  126. renewing of our mind. Renew our mind

  127. this morning, oh God. Deal with our

  128. hearts. Deal with the bitterness and the

  129. envy and the jealousy and the hatred,

  130. the unforgiveness.

  131. anything that defiles our prayers. God,

  132. we would offer you pure worship this

  133. morning. We want our songs that we lift

  134. up when we lift up our voices to be a

  135. sweet smelling favor to you. We want our

  136. prayers to be heard on high. We we want

  137. our communion remembrance to be truly a

  138. communion of our soul with your spirit

  139. for you are present. So God, I pray that

  140. you would deal with our hearts this

  141. morning. If there's anything that brings

  142. a foul order to our worship before you,

  143. God, I pray that you would deal with it.

  144. That you would refine us and purify us

  145. and cleanse us and purify your people

  146. for your glory and for your honor. In

  147. Jesus name I pray. Amen. You may be

  148. seated. Well, last week I went through

  149. 17 to 20 and I'm not going to uh go

  150. through that in depth again, but I just

  151. want to remind uh you that last last

  152. week's sermon dealt with this this text

  153. of of Matthew 5:17-20, which is really

    Matthew 5:17–20

  154. like the core thesis point of the

  155. sermon. He said, "I didn't come to

  156. destroy it, but I came to fill it to the

  157. full." And one of the ways he does that,

  158. we talked last week, was by teaching the

  159. true original intent, which you would

  160. know because he's the author. Jesus is

  161. the author of the Old Testament.

  162. The spirit of Christ was was speaking

  163. through the prophet. It's Christ who

  164. speaks from the burning bush,

  165. the son of God. It's he that instructs

  166. Moses. Jude tells us it was Jesus who

  167. led the children of Israel out of Egypt.

  168. uses his name Jesus who led the children

  169. of Israel out of Egypt. It was Jesus.

  170. Everything in the Old Testament points

  171. to Jesus. It directly comes to Jesus and

  172. nothing in it is bad or evil or to be

  173. ashamed of. If we're ashamed of anything

  174. in the Old Testament to some degree,

  175. we're we're ashamed of the words of our

  176. Lord.

  177. So, we don't throw it away, right? We we

  178. interpret it in light of the new

  179. covenant, in light of the cross, in

  180. light of the grace of God, but we don't

  181. throw it away and we don't dishonor it

  182. and we don't mock it and we don't say,

  183. "Well, that's a little embarrassing law.

  184. I'm sure glad we don't live under that

  185. anymore." With reverence, we must come

  186. to the Old Testament and we look at it

  187. through the work of Christ and what he's

  188. accomplished and what he has done

  189. because Jesus said, "I didn't come to

  190. destroy. Not not an iota, not a jaw, not

  191. a yod, not a tit, but he came to fill it

  192. to the full came to teach it and teach

  193. his true original intent. And that that

  194. I believe is of the other purposes. He

  195. did come to live an obedient life to the

  196. law, to fulfill the requirements of the

  197. law so that he could die for our sins

  198. and give us the gift of righteousness.

  199. We talked about that last week. But what

  200. he's going to do throughout the sermon

  201. is he's going to fulfill the law by

  202. teaching its true meaning and intent.

  203. He's not abregating it. He's not doing

  204. away with it. He is teaching its

  205. original intent. He's getting to the

  206. heart of the law. And he's doing it so

  207. that his disciples can obey it. The

  208. emphasis of the sermon on the mount is

  209. if you hear these things in mind and do

  210. them, you're the wise man that builds on

  211. the rock. But if you hear them and don't

  212. do them, you're a fool building your

  213. life on the sand. And when the judgment

  214. comes, your life is going to be like the

  215. house on the sand. It's going to just

  216. fall down. It's going to be worthless.

  217. So, we need to take heed to God's word.

  218. I'm so grateful we're saved by grace.

  219. I'm so grateful that on the day of

  220. judgment, I don't have to go before him

  221. in my sins, and my righteousness, with

  222. my poultry works to offer. I'm so glad I

  223. can come before his throne, the

  224. righteousness of Christ, because without

  225. it, I would surely be damned. Uh,

  226. nevertheless, God's law is meant to be

  227. learned, internalized, and obeyed.

  228. We're saved by grace, but we're saved

  229. under good works. How do you know what a

  230. good work is?

  231. Because sometimes what our common sense,

  232. our own understanding tells us is a good

  233. work is a bad work. Many people push

  234. for, for example, euthanasia, which

  235. means good bless. They say, "Well,

  236. grandma's getting old. Let's give let's

  237. give grandma a permanent sleeping pill

  238. and put her out of our misery." And

  239. they'll think they're doing them a

  240. service.

  241. Right? It sounds good to man, but God

  242. doesn't murder. So, we need to look to

  243. God's word to define for us what is good

  244. and what is evil.

  245. And so, um, here Jesus was going to

  246. teach us about a very, very short

  247. commandment. You shall not murder.

  248. It's found in Exodus 20. It's found in

  249. Deuteronomy 5:17. You shall not murder.

    Deuteronomy 5:17

  250. And he's going to the heart of murder.

  251. And he's going to go beyond what his

  252. audience thinks. Let's look at it in

  253. Matthew 5:21.

    Matthew 5:21

  254. We'll start in verse 21 of our of our

  255. text today. He says, "You have heard

  256. that it was said of those of old to

  257. those of old, you shall not murder, and

  258. whoever murders will be liable to the

  259. judgment."

  260. He's saying, "This is what you've

  261. heard." He said, So, what is he doing?

  262. He's alluding to the Old Testament. He's

  263. going to teach us. Okay, this is what

  264. you've heard and and and uh I'm gonna

  265. he's going to teach us the spirit of

  266. this law goes far beyond what some

  267. people have defined it as to to look at

  268. the Old Testament's teaching on murder.

  269. I want to go to arguably the second

  270. murder. The first murder is Adam

  271. partaking of the tree of the knowledge

  272. of good and evil, bringing death upon

  273. himself and all of his seed and

  274. children. But the second Adam we f

  275. second murder we find in Genesis chapter

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  276. 4. It's a a very famous Bible account

  277. that of Cain and Abel. It says in

  278. Genesis 4 verse one, "Now Adam knew his

  279. his knew Eve his wife and she conceived

  280. and bore Cain, saying, I have gotten a

  281. man with the help of the Lord. And

  282. again, she bore his brother Abel." Now

  283. Abel was a keeper of sheep, and Cain a

  284. worker of the ground. In the course of

  285. time, Cain brought to the Lord an

  286. offering of the fruit of the ground. And

  287. Abel also brought of the firstborn of

  288. his flock and of their fat portions. And

  289. the Lord had regard for Abel and his

  290. offering. But for Cain and his offering,

  291. he had no regard. So Cain was very angry

  292. and his face fell. Very interesting.

  293. We're going to hear about the first

  294. murder here. And what happens is they

  295. both bring a sacrifice to the Lord. Now,

  296. uh, Abel is a keeper of sheep. He has

  297. sheep and Cain, he's a farmer. And so,

  298. uh, Abel brings what God commanded to be

  299. brought, which was a picture of Christ.

  300. A lamb without blemish is a blood

  301. sacrifice. It's a picture of Christ. We

  302. learn later on in Leviticus 17, without

  303. the shedding of blood, there is no

  304. remission of sins. And instead of

  305. bringing a blood sacrifice, which is a

  306. picture of Christ, Cain brings the work

  307. of his hands, a product of the ground.

  308. And Cain wants God to bless his idea of

  309. worship. Cain has this idea of worship.

  310. Well, these are beautiful vegetables. I

  311. put a lot of work into these vegetables,

  312. so I'm going to give them to God, and

  313. God should just be happy with that.

  314. Well, if God hadn't told him what to

  315. bring, then I don't believe if it was

  316. the had to offer. I I imagine God would

  317. have accepted it. But God God told must

  318. have told him that that's not what to

  319. bring. So we read in verse six as the

  320. Lord said to Cain, "Why are you angry?"

  321. He's angry. Why are you angry? Why is

  322. your face falling if you do well? Will

  323. you not be accepted? Will I not accept

  324. you if you bring a lamb without blemish?

  325. If you bring a picture of Christ, will I

  326. not accept you? Will you not come before

  327. my throne and receive a good word? Will

  328. you not be accepted if you bring a lamb?

  329. Right?

  330. And if you do not do well, sin is

  331. crouching at the door. The Bible says

  332. that that um sin is the breaking of

  333. God's law. To him that knoweth to do

  334. good and doeth it not to him in a sin. I

  335. don't believe Cain and Abel were left

  336. guessing. God had told him back when

  337. Adam and Eve sinned. He flew an animal

  338. and he covered them in the skins of

  339. those animals. And there was a precedent

  340. set that the penalty the wages of sin is

  341. death. This animal will die in your

  342. place. as a picture of what Christ would

  343. do for you when he died on the cross.

  344. But he wants to bring his own work to

  345. God. And he knows it's wrong. And Jesus

  346. and God says to him, he says, "Uh, if

  347. you do well, will you not be accepted?

  348. If you do not do well, sin is scrouching

  349. at the door. It's desire for you and you

  350. must rule over it." Cain spoke to Abel

  351. his brother. And when they were in the

  352. field, Cain rose up against his brother

  353. Abel and killed him. There we have the

  354. first murder. And we have a motive. He

  355. was angry first. He was angry at God.

  356. But he couldn't kill God.

  357. The side was off the table. So

  358. Fratricside was on the table. Couldn't

  359. kill God. So he killed Abel. Later on

  360. God will show up. And what will they do?

  361. They'll nail him to a cross.

  362. And so the first murder is committed.

  363. And then we have the first passing of

  364. verdict, the first passing of judgment.

  365. Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is

  366. Abel, your brother?" He said, "I do not

  367. know. Am I my brother's keeper? In other

  368. words, am I supposed to be the

  369. micromanager, my brother's wife?" Which

  370. is no, of course not.

  371. And the Lord said, "What have you done?

  372. The voice of your brother's blood is

  373. crying to me from the ground." By the

  374. way, the word here, blood, is in the

  375. plural.

  376. It's not actually blood. It's blood.

  377. talked to a rabbi one time and he said

  378. that the that the Jews have asked why

  379. why is blood in the plural here and and

  380. they and they've come to the conclusion

  381. not only was Abel killed but all his

  382. potential children were killed. God

  383. created mankind to be fruitful and

  384. multiply and fill the earth with

  385. imagebearers.

  386. So when Cain kills Abel, he kills all of

  387. his potential blood, his potential

  388. children blood.

  389. He says, "And now you are cursed from

  390. the ground which has opened its mouth to

  391. receive your brother's blood from your

  392. hand. When you work the ground, it shall

  393. no longer yield you with strength. You

  394. shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on

  395. the earth." At this point in time, God

  396. did not choose to put him to death. And

  397. Cain will complain about this. He's

  398. like, "This penalty is too much for me."

  399. God says, "Well, I'll put a mark on you

  400. and nobody will kill you and you'll be

  401. okay." But he lived the rest of his life

  402. in paranoia. He went and built a fortifi

  403. fortification. I believe because he was

  404. a paranoid man and because the earth no

  405. longer bore its fruit for him and so he

  406. went off and built the city. But but you

  407. notice here's a pattern. Cain has an

  408. anger problem. Cain murders his brother

  409. and judgment is passed upon Cain. Well,

  410. what happens? Since Cain is not put to

  411. death, murder doesn't lessen it. It

  412. multiplies.

  413. Later on, God would say, "You shall put

  414. the evil away from among you." But in

  415. this case, God, it was very early in

  416. humanity and God wanted children of Cain

  417. and and uh so God did not at this time

  418. give descendants of the death penalty.

  419. But what happens? Well, we remember in

  420. Genesis, what happens is the earth

  421. becomes filled with violence. Everybody

  422. starts killing each other. God saw that

  423. the heart of man was only evil

  424. continually and they were violent. The

  425. earth was filled with violence. They

  426. didn't put away the evil and The result

  427. was evil proliferated. That's what

  428. happens if you don't deal with sin. You

  429. don't pull the weed early, you get lots

  430. of weed. Oh, there's only one dandelion.

  431. There's no harm. It doesn't take up much

  432. ground. Not for long. You have a lot of

  433. dandelions. If you get one dandelion and

  434. you don't get rid of that dandelion

  435. before the the seeds go, you're going to

  436. have lots of dandelions.

  437. If you don't deal with the sin, it's

  438. going to multiply. If the church doesn't

  439. deal with sin, it'll multiply. Because

  440. what happens with the seed of murder,

  441. the seed of lust, the seed of

  442. bitterness, the seed of fornication is

  443. if you don't deal with it, it multiplies

  444. and the weed seed spreads. Well, the

  445. earth becomes filled with violence. God

  446. sends a flood to wipe out humanity. It's

  447. a death penalty for the totality of

  448. humanity. It's a death penalty. It's a

  449. death sentence upon humanity and upon

  450. creation. But Noah finds grace in God's

  451. sight. And so because Noah finds grace,

  452. God preserves through Noah and his son

  453. and and their wives and his wife. Uh he

  454. preserves humanity eight people on an

  455. ark. And when he gets off the ark, he

  456. makes the covenant with them. And in

  457. order to keep this from happening again,

  458. he gives them very clear instructions

  459. about murder. Genesis 9 verse 5. And for

    Genesis 9:5

  460. your lifeblood,

  461. I will require reckoning. It's talking

  462. about if somebody takes away your blood

  463. like like like Abel and kills you. I

  464. will require a reckoning from every

  465. beast I will require it and from man

  466. from his fellow man I will require a

  467. reckoning for the life of man. Whoever

  468. sheds the blood of man by man shall his

  469. blood be shed. For God made man in his

  470. own image and you be fruitful and

  471. multiply and increase greatly on the

  472. earth and multiply in it. God said from

  473. here on out, I'm talking to eight people

  474. from which all nations of the earth will

  475. come. To these eight people, from here

  476. on out, if anybody kills an image

  477. bearer,

  478. I require man to deal with it by putting

  479. that person to death. We're not going

  480. for the pre flood policy here. The pre

  481. flood policy was uh you can make him you

  482. can you can just exile them or make them

  483. be a vagabond. But from here on out, if

  484. anybody murders a human being, a human

  485. image bearer, that person is gonna be

  486. put to death. And that is said to your

  487. Chinese ancestors, your Anglo-Saxon

  488. ancestors, your Peruvian ancestors, your

  489. Viking ancestors, your African

  490. ancestors. It's it's spoken to all of

  491. humanity. This is the law for humanity.

  492. Before Moses,

  493. this is the this is the norm. If someone

  494. murders an image bearer, they are to be

  495. put to death. And is compassionate

  496. because if you don't put the murderer to

  497. death, you will have a proliferation.

  498. The weed seed will spread and you have

  499. communities that are wholly given over

  500. to bloodshed and violence.

  501. You will not be safe in your homes. You

  502. will not be safe walking down the street

  503. at night. You will not be safe wherever

  504. you go because if you don't put away

  505. evil, evil will spread like gang green.

  506. It's a compassionate thing to do. In the

  507. in the moment, you feel pity because

  508. this person We just don't want to put

  509. this person to death. They have so much

  510. to offer. They're so young. They're just

  511. a a child of 27.

  512. And we make excuses, but God says, "No,

  513. if you want to have the evil put to put

  514. away the evil from among you, you must

  515. put the murderer to death." And in the

  516. end, if you if you do it, it's actually

  517. compassionate because you preserve life

  518. and you don't have the proliferation of

  519. murder and you don't you can be safe in

  520. your home. man comes along and wants to

  521. be nicer than Jesus,

  522. more compassionate than Jesus.

  523. Oh, we've evolved beyond that.

  524. Well, how's it working out for us?

  525. How's it working out for our

  526. communities? Turning a blind eye. God

  527. specifically says, "Your eye shall not

  528. put hitting him. You shall put him to

  529. death, and so shall you put away the

  530. evil from your men."

  531. You know, somebody

  532. somebody with a a toe

  533. diabetic. Some of you have experienced

  534. this. You got a diabetic toe. I got a

  535. lot of pity on my toe.

  536. I don't want to cut my toe off. Why? Why

  537. would anybody cut their toes off? That's

  538. just cruel. Well, because sometimes if

  539. you don't cut the toe off, your whole

  540. body will die.

  541. And that's the point of putting the

  542. murder to death. If you don't put it to

  543. death, it will proliferate. Now, notice

  544. I want I I need to talk about this. It

  545. might be a little uncomfortable, but it

  546. needs to be said. It's very interesting

  547. to me that immediately following in

  548. verse 7, he says, "You and you be

  549. fruitful, multiply, increase greatly on

  550. the earth, and multiply in it."

  551. He reiterates Genesis 1:27, the first

    Genesis 1:27

  552. command of scripture is to be fruitful

  553. and multiply and build the earth. That's

  554. the very first scripture in the Bible.

  555. The very first blessing and command was

  556. to be fruitful and multiply. Why is it

  557. here next to this death penalty? Well,

  558. because I think that the most common

  559. murder there is is the murder of

  560. children and always has been.

  561. Because as much as our society loves how

  562. it loves children, our society does not

  563. love children. And if you've got three

  564. of them in diapers, you'll find people

  565. they kind of make it try to sound like,

  566. oh, you got your hands full. What they

  567. really mean is what's wrong with you?

  568. You got three children in diapers, but

  569. you know you're supposed to put it too.

  570. and little jokes like you know what

  571. causes that dumpster you is not eating

  572. watermel

  573. but there's an antagonism to it you'll

  574. feel it some of you haven't have have

  575. children you got three three little ones

  576. you'll hear those comments and you can

  577. just feel a little bit of little bit of

  578. condescension it don't be sensitive just

  579. smile say yeah they're my blessing and

  580. don't don't be angry at the person but

  581. our study really doesn't like it really

  582. don't

  583. and and uh and here we have this command

  584. to be brutal right after don't murder

  585. why is that because throughout history

  586. there have been people ready to offer

  587. their babies in the brazen burning belly

  588. of Baal

  589. technically

  590. human facets children are the first to

  591. go and and uh to this very day we got

  592. coming up here in a few days amendment

  593. three

  594. amendment three is some would say is an

  595. attempt to stop abortion in the state of

  596. Missouri but it's not has lots of

  597. permission for killing certain

  598. certain image bears and and it's not and

  599. and sometimes providers will make it

  600. feel like well you know at this point

  601. they have a heartbeat you can't do it

  602. after heartbeat or this this point I

  603. feel pain and and and you know there's

  604. no anesthetic and these children are

  605. being burned and cut and dismembered and

  606. tortured and all of that I mean those

  607. are those are good to appeal to the

  608. senses and the compassion of people but

  609. the fact of the matter is life begins at

  610. conception

  611. it begins at the moment

  612. The sperm and egg unite and form a new

  613. life. An image bearer is on the way.

  614. It's the beginning of life.

  615. And it's not and and it's not just you

  616. shall you shall uh not allow some

  617. murders. All image God wants it put away

  618. from us. Amendment three makes all kinds

  619. of exceptions. I won't be voting in

  620. favor of this. I I want to see abortion

  621. ended. I do. But I can't say it's okay

  622. to kill these children but not these

  623. children.

  624. I leave that to your conscience. But I

  625. just want to I I I I for um I I I I

  626. believe that this is clearly saying that

  627. you know when we vote for something you

  628. have to take it seriously, pray about it

  629. very seriously because God holds us

  630. accountable. We don't want to be like

  631. Saul who was consenting to the death of

  632. Stephen. Did he actually throw his

  633. stone? That doesn't say Stephen threw a

  634. stone to Stephen. It just says he

  635. consented to it. He consented. He voted

  636. for it, if you will. He was there. He

  637. was nodding. He had an agreement. Maybe

  638. he didn't vote. Maybe he's just there

  639. collecting the clothes.

  640. But God God says that murdering an image

  641. bearer is an offense against him. It's a

  642. serious thing. What we need to do is

  643. that does that sound horrific to you?

  644. Does that sound shocking to you? That's

  645. because we're living in this little

  646. Overton window where

  647. even even the pro-life community, the

  648. Christian community is only willing to

  649. go so far in condemning abortion.

  650. Well, God's word is over here. The

  651. little the little window what's

  652. acceptable to talk about is over here.

  653. But God's word is over here. And it

  654. says, "He that sheds man's blood, a man

  655. shall his blood be shed."

  656. And by the way, my dear Christian

  657. brothers and sisters, check out if

  658. you're on the pill, check out, do your

  659. research. Those pills, my understanding,

  660. are mortification. The morning after

  661. pill is the murder of an image bearer.

  662. Life has been conceived

  663. and it's the putting away of an image

  664. bearer. It's a serious offense. God

  665. destroyed the earth because of it. The

  666. blood of the innocent cries out before

  667. God's throne.

  668. And so this is this is where we get to

  669. uh this is where God actually the death

  670. penalty. Then it's reiterated in both of

  671. the ten commandments. I'll read one of

  672. them. Exodus 20 verse 13. It simply says

    Exodus 20:13

  673. you shall not murder. And that's what

  674. Jesus is most directly referring to here

  675. is you've heard it said you shall not

  676. murder and whoever murders shall be

  677. liable to the judgment. So the one

  678. scripture comes from Exodus 2013 and

  679. liar to the judgment comes from Exodus

  680. 21 12-4. Whoever strikes a man so that

  681. he dies shall be put to death.

  682. But He did not lie and wait for him. But

  683. God let him fall into his hand. Then I

  684. will appoint for you a place to which he

  685. may flee. But if a man willfully attacks

  686. another to kill him by cunning, you

  687. shall take him from my altar that he may

  688. die. He may come to the altar. It was it

  689. was the custom in those days to plead

  690. for mercy by holding on to the altar. We

  691. see several people doing this Old

  692. Testament. Joab being one of them. Joab

  693. was a murderer and he went and he clung

  694. to the altar like I'm in a holy place.

  695. You know, I'm crying out to God. Don't

  696. kill me. I'm asking God to forgive me.

  697. And Solomon said you go bring him from

  698. the altar. You kill him right where he

  699. stands.

  700. God says cleaning to the altar is not

  701. going to save you.

  702. It clinging to the altar could wash away

  703. your sins before the court of God, but

  704. it could not erase your crime. Jesus

  705. died for our sins. He didn't die for our

  706. crimes. If you stole, ask God to forgive

  707. you and then make restitution.

  708. If you lied, ask God to forgive you and

  709. make restitution.

  710. God God says but but for the the civil

  711. in the civil sphere, not in the heavenly

  712. sphere. There will be many I believe

  713. there'll be many murderers and thieves

  714. and adulterers, all sorts of sin sinners

  715. in heaven.

  716. But that doesn't mean that justice

  717. shouldn't be done in the civil realm.

  718. It's told in Romans 13, what what what

  719. is what does the civil magistrate have?

  720. He has a sword.

  721. It's a sword. What's that sword for?

  722. It's not for education. It's not to take

  723. care of the elderly. is not to help out

  724. the women and infants and children. The

  725. sword is for punishing evil to earth so

  726. that the earth isn't filled with

  727. violence. That's what the civil

  728. magistrate does. And this was God's idea

  729. and this was God's teaching. And these

  730. are the words of Jesus through Moses to

  731. the children of Israel.

  732. And if a person accidentally did it,

  733. there's a distinction. There was a city

  734. of refuge he could flee to. We read

  735. about this in Deuteronomy 19:4.

    Deuteronomy 19:4

  736. The accidental homicide. What about when

  737. Homicide is an accident. Deuteronomy 19

  738. says this is a provision for the man

  739. slayer that person accidental homicide

  740. who by staying there may save his life

  741. if anyone kills his neighbor

  742. unintentionally without having hated

  743. him. Why? Because hatred is the motor

  744. motive for the murder. Okay, very

  745. important to our text that we're getting

  746. to

  747. unintentionally without having hated him

  748. in the past. As when someone goes into

  749. the forces his neighbor to cut wood, and

  750. his hand swings the axe to cut down a

  751. tree, and the head flips from the handle

  752. and strikes his neighbor so that he

  753. dies, he may flee to one of these cities

  754. and live. Let the avenger of blood and

  755. hot anger pursue the manslayer and

  756. overtake him because the way is long,

  757. and strike him fatally, though the man

  758. did not deserve to die since he had not

  759. hated his neighbor in the past. What's

  760. the difference between the accidental

  761. homicide and the intentional homicide?

  762. is the motive of hatred.

  763. And what is Jesus calling to our

  764. attention in Matthew chapter 5? Hatred.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  765. Despising your brother. Envy for

  766. brother. The difference between an

  767. accident and a murder is the motive.

  768. And this Jesus is picking up on is God

  769. sees the motive even if the action isn't

  770. carried out.

  771. So even if you've never murdered

  772. anybody, God sees a murderous heart if

  773. it's a murderous heart.

  774. So in the Old Testament, the solution

  775. was if somebody accidentally killed

  776. somebody,

  777. uh there were cities that they could run

  778. to and they could they could live there

  779. and have a productive life with their

  780. family, they could be a father to their

  781. children. They could they could learn a

  782. trade in the cities, become a city

  783. dweller, and they could learn a trade

  784. and they could provide for their own.

  785. What's our idea today? They say, "Oh,

  786. that sounds so silly and backwards. What

  787. do we do today?" Well, we take people,

  788. both accidental and non-accal homicide,

  789. and stick them in prison with hardened

  790. criminals where they learn about how to

  791. commit crimes better next time, where

  792. they're taken away from their families,

  793. and the victims through taxes support

  794. the murderers. This is a messed up

  795. system. We got one I looked it up one

  796. time, 1.3 million people in our prison

  797. system.

  798. at taxpayers's expense. There were no

  799. prisons in the Old Testament. If they

  800. were a murderer that deserved to die,

  801. they died. If they were a if they if

  802. they stole something, they made

  803. restitution. And there's a whole host of

  804. things that are crimes in our society,

  805. which would have been foolish in a

  806. biblical society, but not a crime. And

  807. and people would have gotten help

  808. instead of um just simply warehousing

  809. them in buildings like like animals. Uh

  810. where their children grow up without a

  811. daddy in the home and their life is set

  812. into utter chaos. Um, God's wisdom is so

  813. much higher than ours.

  814. So much higher than ours.

  815. We don't have a better system than God's

  816. law.

  817. Let's get back to our text chapter 5.

  818. That's the You've heard it has been

  819. said. I just gave you some of what has

  820. been said about murder. And I want you

  821. to notice that the motive of anger, it

  822. comes out in the pain story. It comes

  823. out in the act. Anger is a key thing

  824. here. Get back to Matthew chapter 5, our

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  825. text. It says, "You've heard it." So,

  826. first we read, "You've heard it said,

  827. you should not murder. Whoever commits

  828. murder is liable to the judgment." Verse

  829. 22, "But I say to you." It's going to be

  830. a repeating phrase. Jesus will say, "But

  831. I say to you." You've heard it said,

  832. "But I say to you." You've heard it

  833. said, "But I say to you." Sometimes it

  834. will be teaching the Old Testament civil

  835. laws or what was required of the civil

  836. society. And sometimes they don't he'll

  837. be correcting a mis a misnomer or

  838. something that people say not what God

  839. says. Here he says, "But I say to you

  840. that everyone who is angry with his

  841. brother will be liable to judgment.

  842. Whoever insults his brother will be

  843. liable to the council and whoever says

  844. you fool will be liable to the hell of

  845. fire."

  846. Jesus doing

  847. the motive of Cain,

  848. the the motive of the murderer.

  849. And Jesus isn't merely saying I'm only

  850. dealing with the external. He's saying I

  851. want to get to the heart. I want to get

  852. to the heart of Cain. I want to change

  853. the heart of Cain. And that heart

  854. appears in little children who cannot

  855. carry out a murder yet.

  856. And it's carried out in children and

  857. their parents when they're angry with

  858. their brother and they push and they

  859. shove and they insult.

  860. say, "Oh, well, children will be

  861. children." No. Deal with the heart of

  862. your children.

  863. If your child is saying something mean

  864. and nasty, you say, "Well, kids say mean

  865. things." Jesus says it's the heart of

  866. murder. Look at it.

  867. He says, "Whoever insults his brother

  868. will be liable to the council."

  869. The council was where they they would

  870. get their trial with two or three

  871. witnesses and an investigation would be

  872. made.

  873. What we really saying is is is is I want

  874. you to see that the heart is the issue

  875. and I'm trying to deal I'm dealing with

  876. your heart here and and that the the

  877. insulting and the cutting and the the

  878. the putting down the demeaning comments

  879. is a heart of murder.

  880. In recent years, we've had people

  881. who got embarrassed on Facebook or

  882. embarrassed on Tik Tok or whatever,

  883. particularly teenagers who went out and

  884. committed suicide

  885. because somebody said something that

  886. they thought was ending their just

  887. running their lives.

  888. That shows you how powerful words can

  889. be.

  890. Words, insults.

  891. It's so easy to just like, oh, everybody

  892. just take a little joke, little insult.

  893. Well, there's a balance here. I Our

  894. children need to be able to take mean

  895. humor, but don't dish it out. Take it,

  896. but don't dish it out. Don't raise

  897. children so sensitive that everything

  898. everybody says to them destroys them.

  899. But on the other hand, we need to train

  900. our children, our grandchildren to have

  901. kindness, to have love, because it's the

  902. opposite of hatred. It's the opposite of

  903. envy. the opposite of the anger and

  904. Jesus is dealing with the heart motive

  905. that's behind the murder. Now notice it

  906. says here he's angry with his brother.

  907. Does this apply to non-believers? Well,

  908. of course. And later in the chapter he's

  909. going to talk he's going to say

  910. virtually the same thing about loving

  911. your enemies. And we'll get to that.

  912. Right. It's significant that his brother

  913. because the first murder was Cain

  914. killing his brother.

  915. And it's the most grievous to a father

  916. when their children are at war with each

  917. other. And what grieves the heart of our

  918. heavenly father the most is when there's

  919. wars of words in the church. When

  920. there's hatred in the church. And so

  921. Jesus Jesus is dealing with the

  922. brothers. He's talking about the family

  923. first.

  924. In fact, if we deal with these issues at

  925. the heart level, at the level of the

  926. family, just if if we can change if we

  927. can change the child training of our

  928. nation,

  929. then within a generation, we can close

  930. our buds, right?

  931. When when when we just have a particular

  932. bad egg arrive, well, we put them out of

  933. our misery. I had a teacher in high

  934. school, civics teacher, and he said

  935. something. I I don't know. I I think I

  936. heard something pretty much confirmed,

  937. but you'll get the idea. Anyway, he said

  938. 2% of the population commit all the

  939. crimes.

  940. All all the crimes 2% of the population.

  941. That was in the early 90s. I don't know

  942. what percentage this is now. It may have

  943. grown in percent, but for the most part,

  944. it's the same. The 2%

  945. they're they before they were murdering,

  946. they were breaking windows and they were

  947. stealing and they were

  948. uh beating people up, getting drunk in

  949. pro in public,

  950. having a bunch of babies out of wedlock.

  951. I mean, it's just they were they were

  952. just they they weren't raised right.

  953. And when you look at you look at the

  954. prison population, most of them come

  955. from fatherless homes.

  956. Vast majority, not fatherless homes that

  957. if you look if you look back at the

  958. family, most of them had the vast

  959. majority of them had a horrible home

  960. life. That's why I I you know I I'll me

  961. I'll mention amendment three. I'll

  962. mention that we have an election coming

  963. up. But honestly I I don't I'm not that

  964. political. Sound political to me pastor.

  965. No. My emphasis is on the individual and

  966. the family in the church. If you change

  967. the individuals, if we train these

  968. children up on the discipline, the

  969. admonition of the Lord, we teach them to

  970. love one another. We model that as a

  971. community in the church. Then the people

  972. we're interacting with the most will

  973. model the love of Christ. You don't need

  974. police.

  975. We were talking yesterday about, you

  976. know, technically a lot of church, a lot

  977. of people have a key to this place and

  978. how to get in this place. You've been

  979. coming here for very long. Even even

  980. non-members say, "Hey, can I get in the

  981. truck?" Sure, I'll give you this. And

  982. I'll tell you, oh, they know you. I'll

  983. give you the lockbox code and you can

  984. come in and go out. Well, if any of you

  985. turn bad, that could go bad for us. We

  986. got a sound system over here. We got

  987. some

  988. drums over here.

  989. But I trust too. I'm not saying all

  990. pastors should trust the congregation.

  991. By the way, it occurred to me recently.

  992. I I think I I guess I've said this

  993. before, but I just been thinking about

  994. it recently that a healthy church has

  995. sinned.

  996. A healthy church has immaturity in it.

  997. Why is that? Because a healthy church

  998. has new people adding to it all the time

  999. who have a variety of issues to deal

  1000. with.

1001. A healthy church going to have some

1002. gossip in it, gonna have some backbiting

1003. in it, gonna have some pornography in

1004. it, gonna have gonna have some anger

1005. issues in it, gonna have some

1006. drunkenness, going to have some

1007. addiction issues. Healthy church is a

1008. church where sinners come and and their

1009. sinners are at different stages of

1010. development, right? But as a community,

1011. we all should be growing in grace.

  1012. God's dealing with those things. He's

1013. transforming us. He's changing us.

  1014. But I have a lot of trust. I have a lot

1015. of trust for this community. A lot of

1016. trust for this community. Um and and I I

1017. say that to say if you change the heart

1018. of men, you don't need police officers

1019. on every corner. Says in Proverbs, by

1020. the transgression of the land, many are

1021. princes. I could put that in modern

1022. vernacular. By defendant land, you get a

  1023. lot of police officers.

1024. But when you change the heart of man,

1025. the heart of anger, the heart of

1026. bitterness, the heart of covetousness,

1027. the heart of adultery, then the

1028. externals with it. So Moses comes out of

1029. Egypt. He has a group of people. Not all

1030. of them are believers. It's a mixed

1031. multitude. Some of them are Egyptians

1032. who are like, "Well, you know, the Jews

1033. put their put the blood over the

1034. doorpost and the avenger of death and

1035. didn't kill them. I'm going with the

1036. Jews. I'm going with the Hebrews."

1037. Actually, is a more technical term. I'm

1038. going with the Hebrews. I'm getting out

1039. of here with them. There were

1040. unbelievers in their camp and they had

1041. civil law to do what? To put away evil.

1042. But now Jesus is showing up and he's not

1043. merely dealing with the civil realm. He

1044. dealt with that in the Old Testament.

1045. Now he comes to us as an individual and

1046. not just as individual. He comes down to

1047. the heart and he wants us to change our

1048. hearts by bringing our sinful hearts to

1049. God, repenting and being transformed.

1050. And then we take our children and we

1051. train them up. And when we see those

1052. weeds of meanness and unkindness and

1053. hatred and envy and covetousness, we

1054. deal with it. We confront it.

1055. We thank their little honey and we we

1056. hug him and we tell them we love him.

1057. We deal with the heart, not merely the

1058. externals, but the heart. Jesus came to

  1059. deal with the heart.

1060. Verse 18, he says, "But what comes out

  1061. uh I'm sorry, Matthew 15:18."

    Matthew 15:18

1062. He tells us the heart of murder. He

1063. says, "But what when what comes out of

1064. the mouth proceeds from the heart and

1065. defiles a person? For out of the heart

1066. comes evil thoughts, murder, adultery,

1067. sexual immorality, theft, false witness,

1068. and slander." Have a feeling I'll be

1069. using this sermon this this same slide

1070. in my next sermon. I'll just change the

1071. label, the heart of to heart of

1072. adultery. You can hear it again next

  1073. week.

1074. Jesus makes it clear that that uh murder

  1075. isn't a lack of cops problem.

1076. Murder is a heart problem

1077. and Jesus wants to change the heart. Now

1078. instead Jesus changes the heart for men.

  1079. We need

1080. we need peace officers. I like the word

1081. peace officer better than police

  1082. officers.

1083. There to keep the peace.

1084. Uh they're there to restrain evil

1085. because not everybody's a big burly guy

1086. that can defend themselves. We have a

1087. society with weak people and um you know

1088. the widow and the orphan and without

  1089. people without family

1090. who are who who need the protection of

  1091. the civil majesty.

1092. We need we need peace officers

1093. but more than peace officers we need

  1094. peace.

1095. And so heart the heart of murder

  1096. is the heart.

  1097. First John 3,

1098. John says this. Says, "For this is the

1099. message that you've heard from the

1100. beginning." By the way, the word that's

1101. the name for Genesis. You've heard it

1102. from Genesis. You heard it from the

1103. beginning that we should love one

1104. another. We should not be like Cain who

1105. was of the evil one and murdered his

1106. brother. He was of the evil one. He had

1107. a heart problem. His own regenerate. And

1108. why did he murder murder him? Because

1109. his own deeds were evil and his brothers

1110. righteous. Do not be surprised,

1111. brothers, that the world hates you. We

1112. know that we have passed out of death

1113. into life because we love the brothers.

1114. Whoever does not love abides in death.

1115. Everyone who hates his brother is a

1116. murderer. And you know that no murderer

1117. has eternal life abiding in him. He

1118. doesn't say everybody that plunges their

1119. a knife into their beating heart of

  1120. someone's chest is a murderer. Everybody

1121. that hates his brother is a murderer.

1122. God says you're a murderer if you hate

  1123. your brother.

1124. If you got bitter bitterness issues with

1125. your brother, he says you're a murderer.

1126. An evidence that you've been saved and

1127. touched by God's grace. One evidence is

1128. you love the brothers. He says you love

1129. the brothers. It's an evidence of

  1130. regeneration.

1131. You I was talking with Chris here. I

  1132. don't know. I think this last week. It's

1133. just strange when you go and you visit a

1134. church or you meet a Christian and like

1135. I I remember experience this one time

1136. where I saw I was in my early uh

1137. actually probably I was early 20s or

1138. late teens and I saw this girl wearing a

  1139. a t-shirt actually quoting Matthew 6 to

1140. consider the liies. I knew that came

1141. from Matthew chapter 6. Oh, hey your

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

1142. t-shirt. Are you a Christian? Like, oh,

  1143. uh, yeah,

  1144. t-shirt.

1145. Oh, just kind of disappointing when I

  1146. meet a Christian and I I be I'm excited

1147. to meet a Christian out in bubble. I'm

1148. always like, hey, that's one of my

1149. family. And then I go and I'm expecting

1150. them to be excited to see me to meet me.

  1151. Like, hey, I'm a Christian. And it's

1152. kind of like, oh, okay.

  1153. I think that's weird. I think it's

  1154. weird. I excited when I meet a believer.

1155. Do you do you love the brothers?

  1156. I I had a conversation with a with a

1157. Romanian pastor one time. He didn't

  1158. speak English and I didn't speak

1159. Romanian or I spoke very little

1160. Romanian. He spoke very little English.

1161. We had a conversation using the Bible.

1162. We would hit out a couple little words

1163. and we turn to a verse of the Bible and

1164. he go to the same passage and we'd make

1165. some kind of point with hand gestures

1166. and we have a great fellowship. Couldn't

1167. even speak each other's language.

  1168. He loved the brothers.

1169. says, "Everyone who hates his brother is

  1170. a murderer."

  1171. It's a It's an indicative.

  1172. It's an indicative.

1173. If you hate your brother, you need to

  1174. repent because you're in a in a

  1175. dangerous situation.

1176. I'm not I I'm not going to go as far as

  1177. the apostle.

1178. Maybe maybe God just hasn't dealt with

1179. that part of your life yet. But it's

1180. still a scary statement. If you hate

  1181. your brother, you're a murderer.

  1182. It's a scary statement. So, let's deal

1183. with that before we go to the communion

  1184. table.

1185. In fact, that's what he teaches on next.

1186. Back to Matthew chapter 5. Back to the

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

1187. center of the mountain. Turn around so

1188. much you're going to forget what the

1189. text is. Back to Matthew chapter 5. So

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

1190. in other words, see as how this is the

1191. case that anger is equivalent of murder.

1192. See how that is the case. If you are

1193. offering your gift at the altar and

1194. there remember that your brother has

1195. something against you, leave your gift

1196. there before the altar and go first. Be

1197. reconciled to your brother and then come

  1198. and offer your gift.

1199. Well, what's it saying? Well, our

1200. heavenly father, if you want to be right

1201. with dad, you got to be right with your

1202. brother. So if you come to the Lord's

1203. table or in those days, if you a

1204. sacrifice. I said, "Okay, I brought my

1205. lamb without blemish. Perfect. Perfect

1206. lamb. Nice healthy lamb. It's a good

1207. looking lamb. Sacrifice great lamb." And

1208. you bring it to the door of the

1209. tabernacle and you travel all the way

1210. from pan ram. And you made it here to

1211. Jerusalem. You're going to offer your

1212. your little lamb, little little uh

1213. little fluffy. And then you're like, "My

1214. brother has something against me." Leave

1215. your gift there. We'll be reconciled.

1216. brothers didn't come and offer your

1217. guest. Now, this old covenant,

1218. what does that look like, R?

1219. Well, you come to the communion table.

1220. I'm not saying you can't take communion.

1221. Um, but what what it's saying is is u

1222. you better get it resolved with your

1223. brother. really when you know when

1224. you're on your way to church when you

1225. know earlier in the week get get right

1226. with your brother or sister or wife if

  1227. the king

1228. as much as possible peaceably with all

1229. men first be reconciled to your brother

1230. and then come and offer your gift before

1231. God hears our worship he wants us to be

1232. right with our brothers and first Peter

1233. 3 says that don't be bitter husbands

1234. don't be bitter against your wives that

1235. your prayers be not hindered

1236. Malachi He says, "You cover my altar

1237. with tears. I won't receive it." Why?

1238. Because you doubt treacherously with the

1239. wife of my youth. What's he saying? I

1240. want you to be right in your horizontal

1241. relationships in order to be right in

1242. your vertical relationship with God.

1243. If you got beef with your brother, get

1244. right with your brother. Then come and

1245. offer your gift. Otherwise, it t

  1246. I think

  1247. a I've seen of times I can't remember 13

  1248. or 17

1249. numbers in my head. It it talk in

1250. Leviticus about how when they would

1251. offer up the burnt offering, it's a

1252. sweet smelling favor in God's nose.

1253. Meaning God when when it's offered in

1254. the proper way, the smell of the burnt

  1255. offering

1256. satisfies God in such a way that he

1257. forgives their sins. Kind of an

1258. interesting phrase, a sweet smelling

1259. favor. And we're told in Corinthians

1260. that that that that sweet smelling favor

1261. is the favor of Christ. that when Christ

1262. died for us, God says, "I accept the

1263. sinner on behalf of the offering they

1264. came to offer." But if we come with

1265. hatred in our heart, it it has a sense

1266. for the sweet smelling savior. He says,

1267. "First get right with your brother."

1268. This is taught in the Old Testament.

  1269. Leviticus 19,

1270. you shall not go around as a slanderer

1271. among your people, and you shall not

1272. stand up against the life of your

1273. neighbor. I am the Lord. You shall not

1274. hate your brother in your heart, but you

1275. shall reason frankly with your neighbor,

1276. lest you incur sin because of him. You

1277. shall not take vengeance or bear grudge

1278. against the sons of your own people. But

1279. you shall love your neighbor as

1280. yourself. I am the Lord. God is very

1281. concerned with don't backfight against

1282. your neighbor. Go make it right with

1283. your neighbor and love him as you love

1284. yourself. Don't go around as a tail

  1285. bearer,

1286. but love your neighbor. Go and confront

1287. him. Post frankly with him. King your

1288. brother. King the people. That doesn't

1289. even say you're guilty when your brother

1290. has something against you. Maybe maybe

1291. they're all in the wrong 100% possibly.

1292. He just says that we should be concerned

1293. if our brother has something against us

1294. and we need to be reconciled with them

1295. as much as we possibly. Sometimes people

  1296. aren't ready to forgive. They're not

1297. ready to move on. They're not ready to

1298. get off their uh out of their angry

1299. prison. But we we need to make ourselves

1300. available for when they are ready.

1301. Jesus concludes this morning's passage.

1302. Just come to terms quickly with your

1303. accuser while you're going with them to

1304. court. Let your accuser hand you over to

1305. the judge and the judge to the guard and

1306. you put it you be put in prison. Truly I

1307. say to you, you will never get out until

1308. you have paid the last penny. Now

  1309. there's an there's an illusion here to a

  1310. prison.

1311. And the idea here is If you owe your

1312. your neighbor and you don't pay it, uh

1313. then the judge finds in favor of the

  1314. other person, you're gonna you're gonna

1315. have to pay the last penny.

  1316. Maybe didn't maybe you well I don't owe

  1317. it.

  1318. He owes me

1319. come to terms quickly with your accuser.

1320. Try to be at peace with your accuser. Uh

1321. or else while you're on your way to

  1322. court,

1323. uh you're doing while you're on your way

1324. to court, lest the the accuser hand you

1325. the judge and the judge to the guard and

1326. the guard throws you in prison. He says,

1327. "Truly I say to you, you will not get

1328. out until you paid the last penny." The

1329. penny was the smallest currency in Rome.

  1330. It was about 160th of a day's wage.

1331. So it was more than one of our pennies,

  1332. but it was a very 160th of a day's wage.

1333. He says, "You won't get out of D's

1334. prison till you pay out the city." Now,

1335. is he really talking about D's prison? I

  1336. think it's an illustration. What's the

1337. illustration? We've all got our day in

  1338. court.

1339. We're all going to appear before the

1340. Lord. And what Jesus is saying is if you

1341. got issues with the brother, seek to be

1342. reconciled with them before your day in

1343. court as much as you can. Be at peace

1344. with the brother. Some people just

1345. they're comfortable with the hostility.

1346. And I was like, well, you know, I just

  1347. I'm we're never going to be we're never

1348. going to go alone. We're never going to

1349. be friends. I'm never going to put it

1350. away. That's not the right heart. It's

1351. not the right heart. The heart, you

1352. know, God God loves his children. He

1353. loves you and he loves that brother that

1354. you're offended at. He loves that sister

1355. you're offended at. And he says, "While

1356. you're on your way to court, before you

  1357. die,

1358. go seek peace with your your brother." I

1359. I think this is direct application to to

1360. to the people in the church. God wants

1361. if we want to be right with God, we got

1362. to be right with each other, with our

1363. neighbors. If we have a heart of

1364. bitterness, heart of envy, heart of

1365. anger, he says it's a heart of murder.

1366. And the evidence of of a of a regenerate

1367. heart is love toward the brethren.

1368. Murder begins in the heart. And to be

1369. right with God, we must repent of the

1370. root sin of murder. One more verse I

1371. want to read or one more passage

1372. concluding with this. This is Psalm 51.

1373. This is a psalm that David wrote after

1374. he committed adultery with Bath Sheba.

1375. After he had Bath Sheba's wife murdered

1376. to cover up his sin, after he had a

1377. bunch of soldiers uh as a consequence of

1378. his cover up got killed.

1379. And he was confronted by the prophet as

1380. a murderer, as an adulterer,

  1381. as a hypocrite.

1382. It says this Psalm 51 says to the choir

1383. master, a psalm of David, when Nathan

1384. the prophet went to him after he'd gone

1385. into Bath Sheba. Here's his prayer.

1386. Prayer of a repentant s have mercy on

1387. me, oh God, according to your steadfast

1388. love. According to your abundant mercy,

  1389. blot out my transgressions.

1390. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity and

1391. cleanse me from my sins. For I know my

1392. transgressions and my sin is ever before

1393. me. David is done making excuses and

1394. he's done with denial. He's ready to

1395. confess his transgressions are ever

1396. before me. I'm not trying to hide it

1397. anymore. I'm done with the hiding it. My

1398. transgressions are ever before me.

1399. Skipping down to 16. For you will not

1400. delight in sacrifice or I would give it.

1401. You will not be pleased with the burnt

1402. offering. The sacrifices of God are a

1403. broken spirit, a broken and contrite

1404. heart. Oh God, you will not despise.

1405. This is the heart of repentance of a

1406. murderer, an adulterer who's grieved

1407. over it. And and so often times we want

  1408. to excuse our sins.

  1409. If if uh

1410. you know, I talked about some heavy

1411. stuff, talked about abortion, talked

  1412. about

  1413. David was a murderer.

1414. Some people want to try to get over it

1415. by by living in denial. Well, that's not

1416. murder. That's different. Denial is

1417. never going to set you free. The truth

  1418. will set you free.

1419. By mercy and truth, iniquity is purged.

1420. And by the fear of the Lord, men depart

1421. from evil. But if you will come to him

1422. with your filthy, stained hand and

1423. confess it, he's ready to hear you. Your

1424. father's ready to hear you. Now, You got

1425. to be ready to make it right with your

1426. brother, too, if you've got a brother or

1427. sister or husband or wife. But, but uh

1428. but God welcomes you to come and confess

1429. your sin. A broken spirit and a contrite

1430. heart, he will not despise.

1431. So, as we come to communion table this

1432. morning, if you have unforgiveness, if

1433. you have hatred, if you have envy,

1434. if you're if you're angry with your

1435. brother and just boiling, I I want to

1436. urge you to resolve to make it right and

1437. confess your sin to the Lord

1438. and trust in his sacrifice on your

1439. behalf and he will hear you and cleanse

1440. you and restore you because Jesus died

1441. for you and he's worth living for him.

1442. God, we thank you, Lord, that you're a

1443. merciful and gracious God. That your

1444. loving kindness extends through the

1445. deepest depths of darkness of humanity.

1446. And uh regardless of where we're at, as

1447. we bring our sins to you, you invite us

1448. as you do in Isaiah 1:18, come now and

    Isaiah 1:18

1449. let us reason together, sayeth the Lord,

1450. though thy sins be afraid. They shall be

1451. white as snow, though they be red like

1452. crimson. shall be his. God, we pray that

1453. you would cleanse us this morning, that

1454. you would heal our broken hearts, that

  1455. you would bring restoration,

1456. and uh God, that you would grant us

1457. wisdom as we deal with these sensitive

1458. subjects and compassion and mercy and

1459. kindness, that your your attributes

1460. would abound in us as your children. And

1461. Lord, I pray for this church, Lord. I

1462. pray Lord if there's any division or

1463. anger or hatred or or jealousy or envy

1464. or bitterness unforgiveness that God you

1465. would deal with it this morning that you

1466. would heal your people. Behold how good

1467. and how pleasant it is for brethren to

1468. dwell together in unity. Bring unity to

  1469. your churches.

  1470. Amen.
