  5. My name is Vaughn Woodson and I am a part of the Oakland Little Faith Group.

  6. Today's scripture reading is from the book of Deuteronomy, chapter 5, verses 1-7 and 22-33, as printed in the liturgy.

    Deuteronomy 5:1–7

  7. And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them,

  8. Hear, O Israel, the statutes and the rules that I speak in your hearing today,

  9. and you shall learn them and be careful to do them.

  10. The Lord our God made a covenant with us in Horeb.

  11. Not with our fathers did the Lord make this covenant,

  12. but with us, who are all of us here alive today.

  13. The Lord spoke with you face to face at the mountain out of the midst of the fire,

  14. while I stood between the Lord and you at that time to declare to you the word of the Lord,

  15. for you were afraid because of the fire.

  16. And you did not go up into the mountain.

  17. He said, I am the Lord your God,

  18. who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.

  19. You shall have no other gods before me.

  20. These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain,

  21. out of the midst of the fire, the cloud,

  22. and the thick darkness with a loud voice.

  23. And he added, No more.

  24. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

  25. And as soon as you heard the voice out of the midst of the darkness,

  26. while the mountain was burning with fire,

  27. you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders.

  28. And you said, Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness,

  29. and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire.

  30. This day we have seen God speak with man, and man still live.

  31. Now, therefore, why should we die?

  32. For this great fire will consume us.

  33. If we hear the voice of the Lord our God anymore, we shall die.

  34. For who is there of all flesh that has heard the voice of the living God

  35. speaking out of the midst of fire, as we have, and has still lived?

  36. But go near and hear all that the Lord our God will say,

  37. and speak to us all that the Lord our God will speak to you,

  38. and we will hear, and we will do it.

  39. And the Lord heard your words when you spoke to me.

  40. And the Lord said to me, I have heard the words of this people,

  41. which they have spoken to you.

  42. They are right in all that they have spoken.

  43. Oh, that they had such a heart as this always,

  44. to fear me and to keep all my commandments,

  45. that it might go well with them and with their descendants forever.

  46. Go and say to them, return to your tents.

  47. But you stand here by me,

  48. and I will tell you the whole commandment and the statutes and the rules

  49. that you shall teach them,

  50. that they may do them in the land that I am giving them to possess.

  51. You shall be careful, therefore, to do as the Lord your God has commanded you.

  52. You shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left.

  53. You shall walk in all the way that the Lord your God has commanded you,

  54. that you may live, and that it may go well with you,

  55. and that you may live long in the land that you shall possess.

  56. The grass withers and the flowers fade,

  57. but the word of our God stands forever.

  58. Well, thank you, Vaughn, for that scripture reading.

  59. Good morning.

  60. My name is Andrew.

  61. I'm one of the pastors here,

  62. and it's good to be with you.

  63. Will you join me in prayer as we come to hear what God has to say to us?

  64. Lord God, it was good when they said to me, when they said to us,

  65. let us go to the house of the Lord.

  66. Father, I thank you personally this morning for the praises sung here

  67. by my brothers and sisters in Christ,

  68. exclaiming your holiness and your character and your awesomeness.

  69. And I pray that we would encounter you as such today,

  70. the God who reigns, the holy and awesome God,

  71. who in many ways is terrifying,

  72. but in Christ is also more tender than we could ever imagine.

  73. Help us to know you as this kind of God.

  74. Help us to know you not just as lawgiver, but lifegiver,

  75. and to understand how those things are not opposed to one another

  76. because of the gospel,

  77. because of the good news of what you've done for us in Christ.

  78. Would you bless and honor the preaching of your word

  79. and fill us all with your spirit

  80. as we listen to what you have to say to us.

  81. And we pray these things in the name of Jesus.

  82. Amen.

  83. Well, Christ Church, we're continuing our series

  84. in the book of Deuteronomy and these Hebrew scriptures,

  85. this last book of the Torah.

  86. And to get what Deuteronomy is about,

  87. I know we've talked about it, but I just want to refresh us.

  88. I want you to picture Moses.

  89. Picture Moses and the people of Israel

  90. on the other side of the Jordan River,

  91. outside of the Promised Land.

  92. And 40 years have now gone by.

  93. 40 years have now gone by since their people,

  94. mostly their parents, mostly their grandparents,

  95. were delivered from slavery in Egypt,

  96. but then refused to enter the land

  97. that God had promised them.

  98. And so here in Deuteronomy,

  99. you have this next generation of Israel.

  100. Pretty much all their parents,

  101. pretty much all their grandparents

  102. have not survived long enough to get to this moment

  103. where they're about to cross the Jordan River

  104. and enter into the Promised Land.

  105. But they're still led by their faithful leader,

  106. their faithful prophet and shepherd, Moses,

  107. who is now 120 years old,

  108. and he's about to die knowing

  109. that he is not gonna enter the Promised Land

  110. with this people.

  111. So here in Deuteronomy, you have Moses,

  112. this great prophet and shepherd over Israel,

  113. contemplating his death,

  114. wishing better things for this next generation of Israel,

  115. better things than for the previous generation,

  116. and looking to speak a final and fruitful word to them

  117. as they begin their next season of being the people of God

  118. without him.

  119. And so what Deuteronomy is,

  120. is it's the record of this prophet Moses,

  121. his final and most important parting words

  122. to an Israelite generation

  123. about to embark on a new chapter

  124. in the story of God's people.

  125. And so in the first chapters,

  126. which we covered in the last couple weeks,

  127. he pretty much, he retells the history.

  128. He retells Israel what God has done for them,

  129. how he brought them out of Egypt,

  130. how he sustained them through the wilderness,

  131. how he forgave them with all their whining

  132. and all their rebellion

  133. and all the ways that they failed to trust him.

  134. But as we come here to Deuteronomy chapter five today,

  135. Moses has moved on from retelling what God has done,

  136. and he moves on to tell us what God has spoken,

  137. namely his law.

  138. Verse one says,

  139. Now next week,

  140. Jonathan is gonna talk about those 10 commandments,

  141. specifically given at Horeb.

  142. But what I wanna point out to us today

  143. from Deuteronomy chapter five

  144. is not the laws themselves.

  145. Today, I want us to see the way that these laws

  146. are actually framed as they're spoken to Israel.

  147. And this is so important to see

  148. because if we just go straight to the laws themselves,

  149. and if we fail to see who communicates these laws

  150. and why and how,

  151. we'll completely misunderstand God's law,

  152. we'll completely misunderstand God himself.

  153. But if we pay close attention,

  154. we'll notice that it's not just the law

  155. that Moses wants to remind us about.

  156. Here in Deuteronomy chapter five,

  157. Moses also wants to remind us,

  158. he wants to impress upon us

  159. of who this God is who spoke to us,

  160. and why he spoke to us,

  161. and how he spoke to us.

  162. Who, why, and how.

  163. See, because Moses understands,

  164. and we all need to understand

  165. that unless we've been struck

  166. by the reality of who God is,

  167. and why he gave us his law,

  168. and how he spoke it,

  169. we'll never rightly relate to God,

  170. we'll never rightly know him,

  171. we'll only know him

  172. as just some authoritarian law-giving God,

  173. we'll never know him

  174. as the affectionate, life-giving God

  175. that he truly is.

  176. And that's what Moses is up to this morning,

  177. that's what he wants his people to see here

  178. in Deuteronomy chapter five,

  179. and that's what I hope we'll all see

  180. in the preaching of God's word this morning.

  181. So let's dig in and look at how,

  182. before Moses even got to the what,

  183. before he even got to the law,

  184. he insisted on reminding them

  185. of who it was who spoke to them.

  186. Notice, he doesn't start with the what of the law,

  187. he starts with the who of the lawgiver.

  188. See, Moses had a bigger understanding,

  189. a bigger view of the faith

  190. and simply, here you go, Israel.

  191. These are some Jewish rules and regulations

  192. for you to obey and follow.

  193. Moses' retelling of the law

  194. is about so much more

  195. than helping them brush up

  196. on this religious manual

  197. for the sake of good Jewish behavior.

  198. In verse two,

  199. Moses roots the statutes and the rules.

  200. He's calling Israel to hear

  201. and learn and do them.

  202. He's rooting them in the covenant.

  203. That's what it says in verse two.

  204. Hear, O Israel,

  205. the statutes and rules.

  206. Learn them and be careful to do them.

  207. Four, verse two.

  208. The Lord, our God,

  209. made a covenant with us in Horeb.

  210. See, by invoking this covenant

  211. that God made,

  212. by invoking this life and death

  213. binding commitment

  214. of the sovereign God

  215. to his people,

  216. Moses is saying,

  217. this is not primarily about rules.

  218. This is primarily about relationship.

  219. And that's the key thing about covenant.

  220. Covenant is about relationship,

  221. a personal, intimate, communicative,

  222. and faithful relationship.

  223. And so what Moses is doing here

  224. is he's reminding these people

  225. in verses four to six

  226. of just how personal,

  227. just how intimate,

  228. just how faithful this God has been

  229. in this covenant relationship to them.

  230. He reminds them,

  231. the Lord, Yahweh,

  232. the God who appeared

  233. and spoke to Abraham

  234. and your forefathers,

  235. he also, verse four,

  236. spoke to you.

  237. He spoke to you.

  238. Face to face at the mountain,

  239. he says.

  240. And not only did he speak intimately

  241. with his covenant people

  242. face to face,

  243. but Moses reminds them

  244. of Yahweh's covenant credentials.

  245. Look at verse six.

  246. Before God even tells them

  247. what they shall and shall not do

  248. in the Ten Commandments,

  249. God grounds his commandments

  250. in who he is

  251. and what he's already done

  252. as their covenant God.

  253. In verse six,

  254. before giving out any commands,

  255. God says,

  256. I am Yahweh,

  257. I am the Lord,

  258. your God,

  259. who brought you out

  260. of the land of Egypt,

  261. out of the house of slavery.

  262. Moses wants them to see

  263. that the law they've received

  264. didn't just come from anyone,

  265. not simply from him,

  266. a mere man,

  267. just another Israelite,

  268. and certainly not from your typical

  269. ancient Near Eastern pagan God.

  270. No, it came from their covenant God,

  271. Yahweh,

  272. the God who had fulfilled

  273. his promises to Abraham,

  274. the God who rescued them

  275. from Egypt,

  276. and the God who was about

  277. to bring them into the promised land,

  278. the I am.

  279. The I am who said,

  280. I am yours.

  281. I am your God,

  282. O Israel.

  283. See, Moses reminds them

  284. that these laws

  285. are so much more than rules.

  286. They're a way of life.

  287. They're a way of life

  288. meant to reflect

  289. and cultivate

  290. a sacred relationship

  291. between God and his people.

  292. Think of it this way.

  293. If you're about to enter

  294. into a relationship

  295. with someone

  296. and you want to nurture

  297. that relationship,

  298. what do you do?

  299. Do you just kind of

  300. plop a manual

  301. into their lap

  302. with all your likes

  303. and dislikes,

  304. all your preferences

  305. and pet peeves

  306. and say,

  307. hey, memorize this,

  308. live by this.

  309. If you want a relationship

  310. with me that's going to work out,

  311. just follow these rules.

  312. Go try that out

  313. and see how it works, right?

  314. No, you unfold to them

  315. who you are

  316. if you want a deep relationship

  317. with them.

  318. You unfold to them

  319. who you are.

  320. You show them your character

  321. and you connect with them

  322. in the deepest ways possible.

  323. You knit your hearts together

  324. around the things

  325. that unite you

  326. and that's what God's doing

  327. in the giving of his law.

  328. It's not a list

  329. of God's pet peeves.

  330. It's a reflection

  331. of who he is.

  332. It's a reflection

  333. of his character.

  334. So when God says,

  335. thou shalt not kill,

  336. it's a reflection of him

  337. as the giver of life,

  338. as a God

  339. who values life.

  340. Or when he says,

  341. you shall not bear

  342. false witness,

  343. you shall not lie,

  344. he's reflecting himself

  345. as a God of truth,

  346. a God of integrity.

  347. And see,

  348. just as these laws

  349. reflect his character,

  350. they also reflect

  351. the intended character,

  352. the intended way of life

  353. for all those

  354. who are made

  355. in his image.

  356. Image bearers of God

  357. meant to enjoy

  358. a harmonious relationship

  359. with him.

  360. See, God's law

  361. is not an oppressive

  362. straitjacket.

  363. No, it's actually

  364. the truest,

  365. most original,

  366. most authentic way,

  367. the best way,

  368. God's intended way

  369. for human beings

  370. to live.

  371. So don't you see

  372. that this book,

  373. this book,

  374. the scriptures,

  375. this law,

  376. even with all the laws

  377. and rules

  378. and statutes

  379. and demands upon our lives,

  380. it's not just

  381. any other book,

  382. it's the word of God.

  383. It's the word of God,

  384. the God who loves us

  385. and gives himself to us

  386. and desires a personal

  387. and intimate relationship

  388. with us.

  389. And the who,

  390. and who these laws,

  391. who these laws come from,

  392. this makes all the difference.

  393. It makes all the difference

  394. in how we should understand

  395. and receive this book

  396. and all the rules

  397. and statutes

  398. that are in it.

  399. You know,

  400. the history of the world,

  401. the history of world religions

  402. is fraught

  403. with a bunch of magic,

  404. impersonal formulas

  405. for how to get what you want,

  406. how to attain that blessed life,

  407. which hoops you have to jump through,

  408. which obstacles you have to overcome,

  409. which sacrifices you have to make.

  410. But this is not so

  411. with the Christian faith.

  412. Christianity is different.

  413. It's not about doing

  414. all the right things

  415. and following a list of rules

  416. from an impersonal,

  417. distant God

  418. who only exists

  419. to place impossible demands

  420. upon our creaturely existence.

  421. The faith of Moses,

  422. the faith of all God's people

  423. is grounded,

  424. not in rules,

  425. but in a relationship

  426. with the one true

  427. and living God

  428. who graciously covenants himself

  429. to belong to

  430. an undeserving people like us.

  431. Do we know this God?

  432. Do we know this God?

  433. This is the God

  434. who rescues his people

  435. from all kinds of slaveries,

  436. from slavery in Egypt,

  437. from slavery to our own sin,

  438. our addictions

  439. and our sinful habits,

  440. from our enslavement

  441. to the regret

  442. and the shame

  443. and the depression

  444. that plague us

  445. over all our inadequacies

  446. and our imperfections

  447. and our failures.

  448. leaders,

  449. if you are down this morning,

  450. if you are depressed

  451. this morning,

  452. overwhelmed by the weight

  453. of your flaws

  454. and your failures,

  455. and if your understanding

  456. of the Christian faith

  457. is simply that

  458. of a legal code

  459. that you have shamefully broken,

  460. Moses has good news for you.

  461. The Spirit of God

  462. speaking through him

  463. and maybe even through me

  464. preaching to you today,

  465. we have better news for you.

  466. Good news

  467. of the covenantal,

  468. relational God

  469. who before even uttering

  470. his Ten Commandments

  471. broke the chains

  472. of his beloved people.

  473. And if we only ever have eyes

  474. to view the Christian faith

  475. as but one among many other

  476. religious systems

  477. filled with pious rules

  478. and rituals,

  479. then we will only ever

  480. find God's law.

  481. We will only ever find

  482. God himself as burdensome

  483. and oppressive

  484. and ancient

  485. and irrelevant.

  486. But if we are struck

  487. with the larger,

  488. truer reality

  489. of this covenant God

  490. that the Lord Almighty

  491. so desired

  492. to bind himself

  493. in a life and death

  494. relationship

  495. with his people,

  496. including people like us,

  497. this changes everything.

  498. This changes everything

  499. about how we are

  500. to understand

  501. the law of God

  502. and it opens our eyes

  503. to see him not just

  504. as the law giver

  505. but as the life giver.

  506. Our covenant God,

  507. he breaks the chains

  508. of all those

  509. who belong to him.

  510. His law is,

  511. it's a picture,

  512. not merely of

  513. the limitations

  514. that are placed upon us.

  515. Actually what it is,

  516. is it's a way

  517. to live out

  518. our liberation.

  519. That's what the law is.

  520. It's a way to live out

  521. our liberation.

  522. And this brings me

  523. to the why question.

  524. Why did God speak to them

  525. and give them his law?

  526. Well, Moses wants them

  527. to know that the reason why

  528. was out of their covenant

  529. God's loving kindness,

  530. out of his desire

  531. for his children

  532. to flourish.

  533. See, when we understand

  534. who this God is,

  535. the why question

  536. actually becomes quite clear.

  537. Look with me

  538. at the last two verses,

  539. 32 and 33.

  540. You shall be careful,

  541. therefore,

  542. to do as the Lord

  543. your God

  544. has commanded you.

  545. You shall not turn aside

  546. to the right hand

  547. or to the left.

  548. You shall walk

  549. in all the way

  550. that the Lord your God

  551. has commanded you

  552. that you may live

  553. and that it may go

  554. well with you

  555. and that you may live

  556. long in the land

  557. you shall possess.

  558. Every good parent

  559. makes laws.

  560. Every good parent

  561. makes rules

  562. for their children,

  563. not for their harm,

  564. not for their frustration,

  565. but for their good.

  566. Like when I say,

  567. Kami and Leah,

  568. thou shalt not

  569. come near to the oven

  570. when we're baking cookies

  571. for you

  572. because you will

  573. harm yourself.

  574. You will get burned

  575. and we don't want you

  576. to get burned.

  577. I mean, think about it.

  578. No one actually wants

  579. to live in a world

  580. without laws.

  581. No one actually wants

  582. to live in a world

  583. without laws, right?

  584. No sane person

  585. who's honest about

  586. their finitude

  587. and their fallibility

  588. even wants to live

  589. in a world

  590. where they themselves

  591. get to make up

  592. their own laws.

  593. Our aversion

  594. is not to laws

  595. if we think about it.

  596. It's not actually

  597. to laws in and of themselves.

  598. You know what it is?

  599. Our aversion

  600. is to imperfect laws

  601. given by imperfect lawgivers.

  602. But what if

  603. there was a perfect lawgiver?

  604. What if there was

  605. a perfect lawgiver

  606. whose laws worked

  607. for the good

  608. of all people

  609. truly without fail?

  610. Might it be

  611. that the one true God

  612. is a good father

  613. who wants our good

  614. and who is for us?

  615. Can you hear

  616. his fatherly longing

  617. here in verse 29?

  618. His fatherly longing

  619. for his children's good

  620. when he says to Moses,

  621. oh, verse 29,

  622. oh, that they had

  623. such a heart

  624. as this always

  625. to fear me

  626. and to keep my commandments

  627. that it might go well

  628. with them

  629. and with their descendants

  630. forever.

  631. What if,

  632. what if we didn't

  633. simply see

  634. the law of God

  635. as a list of limitations

  636. but as a liturgy

  637. of life?

  638. A good way,

  639. a good pattern

  640. to commit ourselves to,

  641. a way to give ourselves to,

  642. a law that's been given

  643. to us

  644. by an infinitely wise,

  645. an infinitely good,

  646. an infinitely loving

  647. father in heaven?

  648. What if we saw

  649. the law of God

  650. in that way?

  651. But maybe you question that.

  652. Is God really good?

  653. Can I really trust

  654. this law

  655. that he's given us?

  656. Is the God of Moses,

  657. the God of the scriptures,

  658. is he truly good?

  659. Is he truly for us?

  660. Well, having considered

  661. the who

  662. and the why,

  663. I think it's really

  664. when we understand

  665. how he spoke

  666. that we begin to see

  667. just how much God

  668. is actually

  669. for his people,

  670. just how much

  671. he desires our good

  672. when he gives us

  673. his law.

  674. I want you to notice

  675. how Moses,

  676. he details the

  677. dramatic experience

  678. of Israel's encounter

  679. with God

  680. and he details it

  681. with a lot of

  682. like darkness

  683. and terror

  684. when God spoke to them

  685. at the Mount Horeb,

  686. right?

  687. In verse 22,

  688. these words,

  689. the Lord spoke to

  690. all your assembly

  691. at the mountain,

  692. out of the mist

  693. of the fire,

  694. the cloud,

  695. and the thick darkness

  696. with a loud voice.

  697. This wasn't just

  698. some casual encounter,

  699. this is what theologians

  700. call a theophany,

  701. a visible,

  702. sensible manifestation

  703. of God

  704. in creation

  705. to humans.

  706. Of all the ways

  707. that God could have

  708. communicated his law

  709. to them,

  710. he didn't drop a scroll

  711. down from the sky,

  712. he didn't send

  713. just an angel

  714. and a prophet

  715. as his messenger,

  716. he didn't just speak

  717. with a loud voice

  718. from heaven,

  719. he revealed to them

  720. his glory

  721. and his power

  722. and his presence

  723. palpably

  724. with the nearest exposure

  725. that anyone had had

  726. with God

  727. since the first humans

  728. originally walked

  729. with him

  730. in the Garden of Eden

  731. before the fall.

  732. And it was an absolutely

  733. overwhelming encounter

  734. to hear this law

  735. from God

  736. because things were

  737. different now

  738. than in the garden.

  739. They were different now

  740. compared to when

  741. God's people once

  742. strolled with him

  743. through the Garden

  744. Paradise.

  745. Moses reminds Israel

  746. of not just how

  747. awesome this encounter

  748. was,

  749. but also of how

  750. absolutely terrifying

  751. it was.

  752. It was terrifying.

  753. Verse 23,

  754. Moses says,

  755. And as soon as you

  756. heard the voice

  757. out of the midst

  758. of the darkness,

  759. while the mountain

  760. was burning with fire,

  761. a whole mountain

  762. on fire,

  763. you came near to me,

  764. all the heads

  765. of your tribes

  766. and all your elders,

  767. and you said,

  768. Behold,

  769. the Lord our God

  770. has shown us

  771. his glory and greatness,

  772. and we have heard

  773. his voice

  774. out of the midst

  775. of the fire.

  776. This day we have seen

  777. God speak with man

  778. and man still live.

  779. They're surprised.

  780. They continue in verse 25,

  781. Now therefore,

  782. why should we die?

  783. For this great fire

  784. will consume us.

  785. If we hear the voice

  786. of the Lord our God

  787. any more,

  788. we shall die.

  789. For who is there

  790. of all flesh

  791. that has heard

  792. the voice

  793. of the living God

  794. speaking out of the

  795. midst of fire

  796. as we have

  797. and has still

  798. lived.

  799. The people

  800. were amazed,

  801. yes,

  802. to encounter

  803. and to hear directly

  804. the voice of God,

  805. but gone were the days

  806. when sinless humanity

  807. could encounter

  808. the Almighty God

  809. in all his glory

  810. and all his holiness

  811. without dread,

  812. without terror,

  813. without the fear

  814. of getting consumed

  815. by his overwhelmingly

  816. holy presence.

  817. A holiness

  818. that cannot,

  819. a holiness that will

  820. not tolerate sin

  821. and evil

  822. and injustice

  823. and unrighteousness.

  824. Moses reminds them

  825. of the terror

  826. that they felt

  827. when they heard

  828. the voice of God

  829. and met him

  830. at the burning mountain

  831. and received

  832. his holy law.

  833. He reminds them

  834. of this

  835. in order to impress

  836. upon them

  837. the seriousness

  838. of coming before God,

  839. the seriousness

  840. of an encounter

  841. with God,

  842. the weightiness

  843. of what was spoken

  844. to them,

  845. given to them,

  846. the law.

  847. The law

  848. is not something

  849. to be received

  850. nonchalantly.

  851. It's not a mere

  852. suggestion,

  853. something to

  854. flippantly try out.

  855. Like, hey,

  856. I'm gonna try keto

  857. this week.

  858. I'm gonna try

  859. intermittent fasting

  860. for months.

  861. See how it works

  862. out for me.

  863. No.

  864. When God told Israel

  865. at Mount Horeb

  866. to consecrate

  867. themselves for two days

  868. and to wash

  869. all their garments

  870. and then on the third day

  871. to come near

  872. to the mountain

  873. but not to touch

  874. the mountain,

  875. not even their animals,

  876. lest they surely die.

  877. And when God came near

  878. and revealed himself

  879. to them

  880. and spoke to them

  881. from this burning

  882. mountain of fire

  883. with flashes of lightning

  884. and thunder

  885. and darkness

  886. and a deep,

  887. dark cloud of smoke,

  888. this was all meant

  889. to indicate to them

  890. that the words

  891. spoken to them

  892. were not

  893. a mere suggestion

  894. but the words

  895. of the holy,

  896. almighty,

  897. creator God,

  898. words that were

  899. a matter

  900. of life and death

  901. and in fact,

  902. too hot

  903. to even handle.

  904. Moses reminds them

  905. that they were surprised.

  906. They were surprised

  907. to even have encountered God

  908. and hear him speak

  909. directly to them

  910. and still have survived.

  911. And by reminding them

  912. of how God

  913. so dramatically

  914. spoke to them,

  915. by reminding them

  916. of how terrifying

  917. God's voice was

  918. when he met them

  919. and spoke his law

  920. to them,

  921. Moses was also reminding them

  922. of really the great conundrum

  923. they faced

  924. as recipients

  925. of God's law

  926. and this was the conundrum.

  927. On the one hand,

  928. Israel recognized

  929. that it was only by

  930. God's word and law

  931. that they could live.

  932. They needed him

  933. to speak to them.

  934. They recognized

  935. that God's voice

  936. was absolutely necessary

  937. for life

  938. and yet on the other hand,

  939. they also recognized

  940. that they could neither handle

  941. nor survive

  942. God's holy word

  943. and law.

  944. That it was impossible

  945. for them

  946. to remain in God's presence

  947. and continue listening

  948. to his voice

  949. much less live up

  950. to this law

  951. he was giving them.

  952. On the one hand,

  953. to hear God's voice

  954. and receive his law

  955. was wonderful

  956. and absolutely necessary

  957. for life

  958. and well-being

  959. but on the other hand,

  960. it was absolutely terrible

  961. and impossible

  962. to survive

  963. and this is really

  964. the whole conundrum

  965. of the Christian faith.

  966. This is the whole conundrum

  967. of all of life

  968. that we human beings

  969. made in God's image

  970. are absolutely dependent

  971. on the word

  972. and the presence of God,

  973. his word

  974. and his voice

  975. of the very thing

  976. that created us,

  977. the very thing

  978. that sustains us

  979. and yet,

  980. his holy word

  981. and his presence

  982. present a deep,

  983. dark threat

  984. to all of us

  985. because we've all

  986. violated his holy standards.

  987. We have not loved him

  988. with our whole heart,

  989. soul, mind

  990. and strength

  991. nor loved our neighbors

  992. as ourselves.

  993. We have not put God first

  994. nor trusted in him.

  995. We've lived first

  996. for ourselves

  997. and then only occasionally,

  998. right,

  999. only opportunistically

  1000. for the good

  1001. of our neighbors,

  1002. our image of God

  1003. bearing neighbors.

  1004. This conundrum

  1005. is at the heart

  1006. of the Christian faith

1007. and if we don't understand

  1008. this dire conundrum,

  1009. we have not understood

  1010. what Christianity

  1011. is about.

1012. If we only know God

1013. as a tender teddy bear

1014. and not as a terrifyingly

  1015. transcendent God,

  1016. we have not understood

  1017. him or his law

1018. or how far we've gone

  1019. astray from him

  1020. and how far

  1021. and how much

  1022. we need him.

  1023. I mean,

  1024. do we,

  1025. do any of us,

1026. do any of us realize

  1027. what a wonder

  1028. it is

  1029. that we are all

  1030. still breathing

  1031. today

  1032. as we've come

1033. into the house of God

  1034. before the presence

  1035. of God

  1036. to worship him

1037. and to hear his word

  1038. this morning.

  1039. Most of us

  1040. probably came

  1041. far more casually

  1042. than any Israelite

  1043. would have dared

  1044. approach

  1045. the living God

  1046. at Mount Horeb

  1047. or in his temple.

  1048. Myself included,

  1049. we come half-hearted,

  1050. we come half-awake

  1051. on our own time,

  1052. on our own terms,

  1053. coming to consume

1054. more than to bow down.

  1055. When reminding Israel

  1056. of what God spoke,

1057. Moses wanted to remind them

  1058. of how God spoke,

  1059. reminding them

  1060. of the conundrum

  1061. inherent in any encounter

  1062. between the holy God

  1063. and wayward humanity.

  1064. But see,

  1065. the beauty of this

  1066. is Moses didn't just

  1067. remind them

  1068. of the problem

  1069. they face

  1070. in verse 26.

  1071. For who is there

  1072. of all flesh

  1073. that has heard

  1074. the voice

  1075. of the living God

1076. speaking out of the mist

  1077. of the fire

  1078. as we have

  1079. and has still lived?

1080. But he also reminds them,

  1081. he also reminds them

  1082. of how they still

  1083. happen to live

  1084. while encountering

  1085. this holy God.

  1086. Go back down

  1087. to verse 4.

1088. The Lord spoke with you

  1089. face to face

  1090. at the mountain,

  1091. out of the mist

  1092. of the fire,

  1093. verse 5,

  1094. while I stood

  1095. between the Lord

  1096. and you

  1097. at that time.

  1098. See,

  1099. the way that Israel

  1100. survived this conundrum

  1101. was by a mediator.

  1102. They had someone

  1103. to stand between

  1104. them and God,

  1105. someone to stand

  1106. between sinful them

  1107. and their holy God,

  1108. a substitute,

  1109. someone to face

  1110. and encounter

  1111. their fiery God

  1112. even more intimately

  1113. than they ever dared.

  1114. The people of Israel

  1115. knew that this was

  1116. a holy God

1117. when they saw the fire,

1118. when they heard the voice,

  1119. and so they pleaded

  1120. with Moses

  1121. in verse 27.

  1122. You,

  1123. go near

  1124. and hear all

  1125. that the Lord

  1126. our God will say

1127. and then speak to us

  1128. all that the Lord

  1129. our God

  1130. will speak to you

1131. and we will hear it

  1132. and do it.

  1133. We cannot handle

  1134. his voice anymore,

  1135. Moses,

  1136. but we desperately

  1137. need it,

  1138. so you go,

  1139. please,

  1140. go and try

  1141. in our place.

  1142. You go,

  1143. expose yourself

  1144. to the fiery God.

  1145. You go meet him

  1146. on the mountain

  1147. in the dark cloud

  1148. for us.

  1149. And God says

  1150. in verses 28 to 31,

  1151. they are right.

  1152. It is good

  1153. that they said this.

  1154. Tell them to return

  1155. to their tents,

  1156. but you,

  1157. Moses,

  1158. stand here by me

  1159. and I will speak

  1160. with you

  1161. so that you

  1162. may teach them.

  1163. See,

  1164. Moses rehashes

  1165. all of this

  1166. because he wants

  1167. them to remember

  1168. not only the terror

  1169. they felt

  1170. in the presence

  1171. of God,

  1172. in the presence

  1173. of his law,

  1174. but also

  1175. he wants to remind

  1176. them of the

  1177. sacrificial mediator

  1178. that they needed

  1179. who made it

  1180. possible for them

  1181. to hear

  1182. from this

  1183. terrifyingly

  1184. holy God

  1185. who made it

  1186. possible for them

  1187. to enter

  1188. into a relationship

  1189. with this

  1190. awesome God.

  1191. See,

  1192. no one just

  1193. encounters God

  1194. on their own

  1195. without a mediator.

  1196. We all need

  1197. someone to stand

  1198. between us

  1199. and God.

  1200. He is far

  1201. too holy.

  1202. We are far

  1203. too sinful.

  1204. We all need

  1205. someone like

  1206. Moses,

  1207. someone who will

  1208. go into the fire

  1209. and the darkness

  1210. in our place

  1211. and restore

  1212. our relationship

  1213. with God.

  1214. Really though,

  1215. we need someone

  1216. greater than Moses.

  1217. God allowed Moses

1218. to serve as a mediator

  1219. but in one sense

  1220. it was a burden

  1221. too great

  1222. for him to bear

  1223. and he died

  1224. without entering

  1225. the promised land

  1226. with his people

  1227. a consequence

  1228. of his own sins

  1229. and the sins

  1230. of his people.

1231. But thanks be to God.

  1232. You know why?

  1233. Thanks be to God

  1234. that he has not

  1235. left us

  1236. without a better

  1237. mediator.

  1238. The Apostle Paul

  1239. says in 1 Timothy

    1 Timothy 2 chapter mention

  1240. chapter 2

  1241. for there is

  1242. one God

  1243. and there is

  1244. one mediator

  1245. between God

  1246. and men.

  1247. The man

  1248. Jesus Christ

  1249. who gave himself

  1250. as a ransom

  1251. for us all.

1252. And this is the gospel.

  1253. This is the gospel

  1254. that the conundrum

  1255. of the Christian faith

  1256. is solved

  1257. by the ultimate

  1258. mediator

  1259. Jesus Christ.

  1260. The one who

  1261. faced the fiery

  1262. judgment of God

  1263. and went into

  1264. the darkness

  1265. in our place.

  1266. And came out alive

  1267. dying and yet

  1268. rising again

  1269. to bring us

  1270. into the promised land

  1271. of new creation.

  1272. The gospel

  1273. the good news

  1274. of Jesus Christ

  1275. is that though

  1276. God is far holier

  1277. than we could

  1278. ever comprehend

  1279. and though we are

  1280. more sinful

  1281. than we could

  1282. ever dare

  1283. to imagine

  1284. the terrifying

  1285. law-giving God

  1286. of Mount Horeb

  1287. has still

  1288. chosen

  1289. to pour out

  1290. his sacrificial

  1291. love

  1292. upon us.

  1293. A love

  1294. greater than

  1295. we would

  1296. ever dare

  1297. hope

  1298. because he

  1299. is the

  1300. life-giving

  1301. God

  1302. not just

  1303. of Mount

  1304. Horeb

  1305. but he's

  1306. the life-giving

  1307. God of

  1308. Mount Zion

  1309. in Christ

  1310. the mediator

  1311. of a new

  1312. covenant

  1313. initiated

  1314. by his

  1315. blood.

  1316. So Christ

  1317. Church

  1318. my prayer

  1319. is as we

  1320. continue in this

  1321. series in

  1322. Deuteronomy

  1323. as we

  1324. continue to

  1325. examine

  1326. God's

  1327. law together

  1328. in the weeks

  1329. ahead

  1330. we'll do it

  1331. with this

  1332. proper

  1333. framework

  1334. remembering

  1335. our covenant

  1336. God

  1337. who broke

  1338. our chains

  1339. even before

  1340. giving us

  1341. commands

  1342. to live

  1343. out our

  1344. liberation

  1345. remembering

  1346. his tender

  1347. heart

  1348. and his

  1349. good intentions

  1350. for us

  1351. his desire

  1352. that we

  1353. experience

  1354. his abundant

  1355. life

  1356. and remembering

  1357. how he

  1358. sacrificially

  1359. sent forth

  1360. his one

  1361. and only

  1362. son

  1363. as a

  1364. mediator

  1365. to solve

  1366. the ultimate

  1367. conundrum

  1368. presented

  1369. by the

  1370. heights

  1371. of his

  1372. holiness

  1373. and the

  1374. depths

  1375. of our

  1376. sin

  1377. this is

  1378. the

  1379. gospel

  1380. will you

  1381. pray

  1382. with me

  1383. Lord what

  1384. will we

  1385. do without

  1386. the gospel

  1387. the good

  1388. news that

  1389. you have

  1390. sent a

  1391. mediator

  1392. for us

  1393. help us

  1394. never to

  1395. presume that

  1396. we could

  1397. have a

  1398. relationship

  1399. with you

  1400. on our

  1401. own

  1402. show us

  1403. the wickedness

  1404. of our

  1405. hearts

  1406. show us

  1407. the holiness

  1408. of your

  1409. character

  1410. and make us

  1411. tremble before

  1412. you

  1413. and

  1414. help us to

  1415. hear your

  1416. tender voice

  1417. your desire

  1418. to be with

  1419. us

  1420. give us

  1421. eyes to see

  1422. how far

  1423. you've gone

  1424. to pursue

  1425. us

  1426. to bring us

  1427. into your

  1428. family

  1429. to allow us

  1430. into your

  1431. presence

  1432. to commune

  1433. with you

  1434. at this

  1435. table

  1436. Lord let us

  1437. not take

  1438. this lightly

  1439. show us

  1440. the heights

  1441. of your

  1442. holiness

  1443. the depths

  1444. of our

  1445. sin

  1446. and the

  1447. overwhelming

  1448. abundance

  1449. of your

  1450. grace toward

  1451. us in

  1452. Christ

  1453. our perfect

  1454. mediator

  1455. we pray these

  1456. things in his

  1457. name

  1458. amen

  1459. and

  1460. so

  1461. we

  1462. never

  1463. let's

  1464. go

  1465. Oh

  1466. oh

  1467. Oh

  1468. oh
