  5. My name is Wes Selke and this is my daughter Nora.

  6. I'm an elder here at Christ Church and we're part of the Oakland community.

  7. Today's scripture reading is from the book of Deuteronomy chapter 29 verses 1 to 6, 9 to 19, and 29 as printed in the liturgy.

    Deuteronomy 29:1–6

  8. These are the terms of the covenant that the Lord commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab

  9. in addition to the covenant that he had made with them in Hora.

  10. Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them,

  11. Your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to all his land.

  12. With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs and great wonders.

  13. But to this day the Lord has not given you a mind that understands, or eyes that see, or ears that hear.

  14. Yet the Lord says,

  15. It says,

  16. You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God,

  17. A covenant the Lord is making with you this day and sealing with an oath to confirm you this day as his people,

  18. That he may be your God as he promised.

  19. As he promised you and as he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  20. I am making this covenant with its oath, not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God,

  21. but also with those who are not here today.

  22. You yourselves know how he lived in Egypt and how he passed through the countries on the way here.

  23. You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold.

  24. Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose hearts turn away from the Lord our God

  25. and go and worship the gods of those nations.

  26. Make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.

  27. When such a person hears the words of the oath and they invoke a blessing on themselves,

  28. thinking, I will be safe even though I persist in going in my own way,

  29. they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.

  30. The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever,

  31. that we may follow all the words of this law.

  32. The grass withers and the flowers fade.

  33. The Lord our God stands forever.

  34. Good morning, Christ Church.

  35. If you're new with us, my name is Jonathan.

  36. I'm one of the pastors here.

  37. It's a delight to have you with us.

  38. The question I'm asking myself a lot these days is,

  39. where are we right now?

  40. As we look at our own lives as individuals, as families, as a congregation,

  41. where are we right now?

  42. As we look at our city, our nation, our society, where are we?

  43. It's an important question.

  44. It reminds me of the story of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.

  45. They decided to go on a camping trip.

  46. And after dinner, they enjoyed a bottle of wine.

  47. And then they laid down for the night.

  48. They went to sleep.

  49. And some hours later, Holmes awoke.

  50. And he nudged his faithful friend and he said,

  51. Watson, look up at the sky.

  52. And tell me what you see.

  53. And Watson said, I see millions of stars.

  54. And Holmes asked, well, what does that tell you?

  55. And Watson pondered a minute.

  56. He said, astronomically, it tells me that there are millions of galaxies

  57. and potentially billions of planets.

  58. Astrologically, I observe that Saturn is in Leo.

  59. Horologically, I deduce that the time is approximately a quarter past three.

  60. Theologically, I can see that God is all-powerful and that we are small and insignificant.

  61. Meteorologically, I suspect that we will have a beautiful day tomorrow.

  62. What does it tell you, Holmes?

  63. And Holmes was silent for a minute and then he spoke,

  64. Watson, you idiot.

  65. Someone has stolen our tent.

  66. What do you see?

  67. You know, you're probably going to get a different answer based on who it is

  68. and their varying understandings and perspectives of things.

  69. What do you see?

  70. What do you make of all this?

  71. Where are we right now?

  72. You know, what I see is that we're coming out of 18 months of a ridiculously disruptive pandemic.

  73. Amen?

  74. 12 of those months, we were in total lockdown.

  75. The past six months, we've been reopening everything, including Christchurch.

  76. We've been looking around for six months going, okay, who's even here?

  77. What do we have to work with?

  78. What are we doing now?

  79. And I'm asking my question as a pastor, what are we going to do in the next six months?

  80. Where are we headed?

  81. And I hope that you'll come join us next Sunday for our congregational meeting

  82. to get more insight into where we're going.

  83. But what I can see over the next six months is a renewing of Christchurch.

  84. A renewing of Christchurch.

  85. And I think there's a quantitative renewal of relationships that has to happen.

  86. All these connections to be formed among people that are regular, people who are new,

  87. people who just don't know one another very well.

  88. How do we make weak ties into strong ties relationally and quantitatively?

  89. But I think that's actually the easier part.

  90. The harder part about renewing Christchurch is this qualitative building up of our life with God.

  91. And I'm so grateful today for Deuteronomy 29 because that's the theme.

  92. If you were to open your pew Bibles in front of you, you would see at the top of this chapter,

  93. the heading says, Renewal of the Covenant.

  94. Renewal of the Covenant.

  95. Another word for renewal is revival.

  96. Revival of the Covenant.

  97. A revival is a season where the ordinary operations of the Holy Spirit are greatly intensified

  98. to renew our spiritual vitality.

  99. And so I want to think together for a minute about the dynamics of covenant renewal,

  100. the dynamics of spiritual revival.

  101. And what I want to say this morning is that covenant renewal is relational, personal, and sacrificial.

  102. Covenant renewal is relational, personal, and sacrificial.

  103. I'm going to start with covenant renewal being relational.

  104. Have you ever had an experience in your life where something was easy to start but hard to sustain?

  105. Anybody experienced this?

  106. Maybe you started a company.

  107. Maybe you started a marriage.

  108. Maybe you started a church.

  109. Maybe you started a family and had some kids.

  110. And yeah, there were challenges in that launching phase,

  111. but you had passion, you had energy, you had sheer grit to kind of get you through those early stages.

  112. But, you know, you get 10 years in, 20 years in, 40 years in, you start facing complexities.

  113. You start facing challenges that you just could never anticipate.

  114. And so businesses find it helpful to refresh their vision and their values.

  115. Couples find it helpful to renew their vows of marriage.

  116. Churches find it helpful to reaffirm their beliefs and their practices.

  117. And that's really the situation here with the people of God.

  118. It's been 40 years since they experienced the liberating power of God in being rescued from Egypt.

  119. It's been 40 years since they were at Horeb or Mount Sinai and experienced God's covenant love.

  120. It's been 40 years since they received the Ten Commandments and the Torah.

  121. And 40 years is a long time.

  122. I'm 43 years old.

  123. And a lot has happened in that span of time.

  124. A lot can happen in 40 years.

  125. And here the people of God are on the plains of Moab, on the edge of the promised land.

  126. And they're being invited and indeed challenged to renew their covenant with the living God.

  127. And what we see here is that that covenant relationship is vertical.

  128. The covenant is a vertical relationship with the Lord.

  129. Look at verse 2.

  130. It says,

  131. Your eyes have seen all that the Lord did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials, and to all his land.

  132. With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those signs, and great wonders.

  133. When you were experiencing an oppressive bondage, you then experienced me as your liberating God.

  134. That's what it says.

  135. And this tells us that the gospel is not merely a good idea.

  136. The gospel is good news.

  137. The gospel is news about historical givens, about the wonderful works of God, about the mighty acts of God's salvation for us.

  138. And it shows us that this covenant relationship is initiated outside of us and above us.

  139. That a covenant is created not by us, but by a prior reality of loving kindness that wants us in a relationship.

  140. It goes on in verse 5.

  141. And it says,

  142. It says,

  143. And so that's why when you get to verse 9, it says,

  144. This assumes that Yahweh has already acted to save his people by his grace.

  145. That they are a people grasped and held by the strong and caring hands of the Lord.

  146. And so these terms of the covenant are not the condition of a relationship.

  147. They're the consequence of a relationship.

  148. They are not entering in to obey the Ten Commandments to get God's love.

  149. They're entering in to obey those commands because they've already received God's love.

  150. And they want to show God how grateful they are in their obedience.

  151. Does that make sense?

  152. You guys tracking with me?

  153. This covenant relationship is a vertical relationship with the Lord.

  154. But also the covenant is a horizontal relationship with the people of God.

  155. Look at verse 10.

  156. It says,

  157. This is a detailed list of the members of the people of God.

  158. In fact, it's the most inclusive list in all of the Old Testament.

  159. It's got leaders and followers.

  160. Men and women.

  161. Old people and babies.

  162. Those born in Israel and those who are resident aliens.

  163. Those who are rich and those who do the lowliest of jobs.

  164. Chopping wood.

  165. Carrying water.

  166. Everyone is included.

  167. And no matter who stands above whom in daily life.

  168. All of them are on level ground because they're in the presence of the Lord himself.

  169. And it says in verse 14.

  170. It says,

  171. I am making this covenant with its oath.

  172. Not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the Lord our God.

  173. But also with those who are not here today.

  174. This covenant transcends time and space.

  175. It includes future generations who are not yet born.

  176. Which means that it involves you and me.

  177. We're the ones not yet standing here today that are being addressed.

  178. And here is the heart.

  179. The essence of the covenant in verse 12.

  180. It says,

  181. You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the Lord your God.

  182. A covenant that the Lord is making with you this day.

  183. And sealing with an oath to confirm you this day as his people.

  184. That he may be your God.

  185. As he promised you.

  186. And as he swore to your fathers Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  187. I will be your God.

  188. And you will be my people.

  189. That is the essence of a covenant relationship.

  190. You will be my people of the promise.

  191. You will be the children of Abraham.

  192. You will be the heirs of that blessing through which all the nations of the world will be blessed.

  193. And all of us are here in this covenant included together.

  194. This reminds me of the words of John Donne.

  195. That great poet and pastor.

  196. He said,

  197. No man is an island of itself.

  198. Every man is a piece of the continent.

  199. A part of the main.

  200. Everybody is a part of this covenant.

  201. It reminds me of the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

  202. When he wrote his letter from a Birmingham jail.

  203. I think he was thinking in covenantal structures in terms of reality.

  204. He said,

  205. All men are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality.

  206. Tied in a single garment of destiny.

  207. Whatever affects one directly affects all.

  208. Indirectly, I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be.

  209. And you can never be what you ought to be until I am what I ought to be.

  210. This is the interrelated structure of reality.

  211. It's a covenant.

  212. A covenant relationship.

  213. And there's this organic, collective, holistic relationship that, yes, involves me, but really is about we.

  214. Yes, it involves every little thread, but it's really about the whole tapestry.

  215. Yes, it's about the different members of the body, but really it's about the healthy functioning of the whole body.

  216. And you can see that here in verse 18.

  217. Where it says,

  218. Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations.

  219. Make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison.

  220. When such persons hear the words of this oath and invoke a blessing on themselves, thinking,

  221. I will be safe even though I persist in going my own way, they will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry.

  222. This covenant says,

  223. Do not let there be a root of bitter poison that could destroy the whole tree.

  224. Jesus and the apostles use the language of watch out for a little yeast that can corrupt the whole batch of dough.

  225. This covenant relationship with the Lord can be negatively influenced by one person, one family, one group of people that thinks to themselves,

  226. It's no big deal if I just go my own way.

  227. It's no big deal if I kind of blend the doctrine and ethics of the scriptures with the ideologies and the practices of Canaan.

  228. It won't be a big deal.

  229. If I just kind of relax my grip on these inconvenient truths that make me a little bit uncomfortable from our faith, all will be well.

  230. And what this actually says in this covenant, that is a complete disaster.

  231. Not just for you, but for us.

  232. And we need to think this way because the covenant, we're told, is relational.

  233. Covenant renewal is relational.

  234. You guys tracking with me?

  235. Covenant renewal is not only relational, it's also personal.

  236. Covenant renewal is personal.

  237. In verse 10, it says,

  238. All of you are standing today in the presence of the Lord, your God.

  239. This is a sober, serious, solemn moment of being koram deo, before the face of God.

  240. They've been listening to Moses' final sermons in the last days of his life.

  241. And in these sermons, Moses has been taking the Ten Commandments and he's been expounding them and illustrating them and applying them and saying,

  242. This is the way.

  243. This is the blueprint.

  244. This is the guide for abundant life in the promised land.

  245. And now it's time, having heard all of this teaching, to covenant together to live by the teaching.

  246. And so every single individual here is going to take responsibility for their own relationship before God.

  247. Their own relationship with God in the presence of God.

  248. They're going to make an oath of allegiance.

  249. They're going to swear their commitment to keep this covenant.

  250. They say,

  251. We are ready to be loyal to this gracious God.

  252. We are fully aware of all the curses and all the disasters that will come down upon us for being disloyal to this God.

  253. And so what do we see that God wants for us in this relationship?

  254. He wants the relationship to be personal.

  255. Listen to verse 17.

  256. It says,

  257. You saw among them, that is the Egyptians and all the nations they've just passed through.

  258. You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold.

  259. Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the Lord our God to go and worship the gods of those nations.

  260. See, God wants the heart of each person turned toward him in worship.

  261. And he's saying,

  262. Look, you're entering into a context of endless distractions.

  263. You're going into a land where you're going to be surrounded by attractive alternatives.

  264. Silver and gold, shiny objects that are going to vie for your attention and turn your attention away from me and cause you to worship lesser things that are not worthy of your devotion.

  265. Can you imagine living in a society, living in a place where there are these bright, shiny, luminous things wanting to control your attention and giving you a dopamine hit every time you pull it out of your pocket or off the shelf and do like this?

  266. Can you imagine living in a society like that?

  267. If you weren't at our August retreat, I said there that the average iPhone user touches his or her phone 2,617 times a day.

  268. In contrast, the psalmist says,

  269. I have set the Lord always before me.

  270. What would my life be like if God touched my mind as often as I touch my phone?

  271. Multi-billion dollar companies are asking themselves,

  272. how do we consume as much of your time and attention as we possibly can?

  273. One person said the tech industry is the largest, most standardized, and most centralized form of attentional control in human history.

  274. So that continuous partial attention is now our new normal.

  275. And don't get me wrong,

  276. our technological devices are not the only idols in our lives that cause our hearts to turn away from the Lord.

  277. They're just the most obvious.

  278. They look around at everybody like this, bowing down, right, to their phones.

  279. So Deuteronomy 29 is telling us how easy it is to turn our hearts away from devotion and love and worship to the Lord

  280. as our highest good, as our sumum bonum.

  281. And this is really a restatement of all the teaching of Deuteronomy.

  282. That heart turn in verse 18 restates for us what we heard in Deuteronomy 5.

  283. The Ten Commands.

  284. What's the first of those Ten Commands?

  285. You shall have no other gods before me.

  286. But remember it says,

  287. you, second person singular,

  288. Jonathan, Barry, St. Clair,

  289. you personally

  290. should have no other gods

  291. before me.

  292. And then the next chapter,

  293. and then the next chapter,

  294. Deuteronomy 6,

  295. is really a restatement of this heart turning away

  296. or turning toward the Lord where it says,

  297. hear, O Israel,

  298. the Lord our God,

  299. the Lord alone.

  300. You,

  301. second person singular,

  302. you,

  303. Jonathan,

  304. Barry,

  305. St. Clair,

  306. you are to love the Lord your God

  307. with all your heart,

  308. with all your soul,

  309. and with all your strength,

  310. with all that you are

  311. and all that you've got.

  312. In the midst of this myriad of distractions

  313. and all of these attention-grabbing,

  314. attractive alternatives

  315. that are telling you to put money

  316. or sex or power at the center,

  317. that are telling you to put your work

  318. or your comfort

  319. or approval

  320. at the center of your life,

  321. what we are being called to

  322. in this covenant renewal

  323. is for each person

  324. and each family

  325. and each group

  326. to turn your heart toward the Lord

  327. in worship.

  328. One of the commentators

  329. that I read this week,

  330. he said,

  331. Deuteronomy

  332. is deeply aware

  333. that Israel's faith

  334. is in a context

  335. of endless distractions

  336. from covenantal faith.

  337. The most likely candidates

  338. for such seduction

  339. are precisely those

  340. who are comfortable

  341. and complacent with God.

  342. They are the ones

  343. most susceptible

  344. and most surely

  345. to bring disaster

  346. upon all of the community.

  347. Seduction from covenant

  348. happens among those

  349. who turn a little bit

  350. at a time

  351. away from the Lord

  352. because they are not vigilant.

  353. What this is telling us

  354. is that your personal

  355. spiritual vigilance,

  356. your personal habits

  357. of the heart,

  358. your personal engagement,

  359. your personal quality

  360. of life with the Lord

  361. not only matters to God,

  362. it matters to all of us

  363. and our quality of life

  364. as a church community.

  365. And so the question

  366. I'm asking is

  367. how can I,

  368. how can we

  369. practically keep God

  370. as our first love?

  371. what are the predictable patterns,

  372. what are the healthy habits

  373. that will regularly

  374. revitalize our relationship

  375. with the Lord

  376. so that He is my love supreme?

  377. And I want to say

  378. you've made a good start today.

  379. You've begun the first day

  380. of your week

  381. here turning your heart

  382. toward the Lord in worship

  383. which is the fourth commandment,

  384. right?

  385. Observe the Sabbath

  386. and keep it holy to the Lord

  387. and that is a great start.

  388. George Herbert,

  389. the poet,

  390. he says

  391. seven whole days

  392. not one in seven

  393. I will praise thee.

  394. And so my question is

  395. how will we worship God

  396. seven whole days this week,

  397. tomorrow

  398. and the next day

  399. and the day after that

  400. and my simple question is

  401. how will you start

  402. the day tomorrow

  403. when you wake up

  404. in the morning?

  405. I love this quote

  406. from C.S. Lewis

  407. in his book

  408. Mere Christianity.

  409. He said this in 1941.

  410. He said

  411. the real problem

  412. of the Christian life

  413. comes where people

  414. do not usually look for it.

  415. It comes the very moment

  416. you wake up each morning.

  417. All your wishes

  418. and hopes for the day

  419. rush at you

  420. like wild animals.

  421. And the first job

  422. each morning

  423. consists simply

  424. in shoving them all back

  425. and listening

  426. to that other voice

  427. and taking that other

  428. point of view,

  429. letting that other

  430. larger,

  431. stronger life

  432. come rushing in

  433. and so on

  434. all day long

  435. he says.

  436. Around that same time

  437. a man

  438. this

  439. Lewis was in England

  440. a man named

  441. Dietrich Bonhoeffer

  442. in Germany

  443. wrote these words

  444. and he would later be

  445. taken and killed

  446. by the Nazis

  447. but he said

  448. the morning prayer

  449. determines the day.

  450. squandered time

  451. of which we are ashamed

  452. temptations to which

  453. we succumb

  454. weaknesses

  455. and lack of courage

  456. at work

  457. disorganization

  458. and lack of discipline

  459. in our thoughts

  460. and in our conversation

  461. with other men

  462. all have their origin

  463. most often

  464. in the neglect

  465. of morning prayer.

  466. Decisions demanded

  467. by work

  468. become easier

  469. and simpler

  470. where they are made

  471. not in the fear

  472. of men

  473. but only

  474. in the sight

  475. of God.

  476. My goal

  477. this week

  478. is to move

  479. some of you

  480. from nothing

  481. to something

  482. to move you

  483. from investing

  484. zero minutes

  485. in your personal

  486. relationship with the Lord

  487. to five minutes

  488. and then ten minutes

  489. and fifteen minutes

  490. to investing

  491. one day of your week

  492. to three days

  493. then four days

  494. then five days

  495. of your week

  496. and if you're a guest

  497. with us today

  498. we're not normally

  499. this practical

  500. or this

  501. this prescriptive

  502. but I'm just realizing

  503. as a pastor

  504. after 18 months

  505. of pandemic life

  506. that we desperately

  507. need to reestablish

  508. healthy habits

  509. and predictable patterns

  510. that are gonna give us

  511. a life with God

  512. and so I've given you

  513. this handout

  514. called morning prayer

  515. as your insert

  516. this morning

  517. and I hope it will

  518. equip you

  519. with a tool

  520. to help

  521. keep God

  522. as your first love

  523. in your life

  524. which is what

  525. Deuteronomy

  526. is all about

  527. tomorrow morning

  528. you're gonna engage

  529. in many habits

  530. you're not even

  531. gonna be thinking about

  532. hopefully you're gonna

  533. take a shower

  534. we hope

  535. hopefully you're gonna

  536. put on clothes

  537. we hope

  538. hopefully you're gonna

  539. eat and brush

  540. your teeth

  541. and I wanna invite you

  542. to create some space

  543. and time

  544. to pray

  545. at least a portion

  546. of this

  547. half of it

  548. just the first words

  549. of it

  550. would be an absolute

  551. victory for us

  552. I think

  553. if we began

  554. this practice

  555. of morning prayer

  556. a revival

  557. would break out

  558. at Christ Church

  559. amen

  560. covenant renewal

  561. is relational

  562. and it's

  563. personal

  564. for each one

  565. of us

  566. but the last thing

  567. I wanna say

  568. is covenant

  569. relational

  570. covenant renewal

  571. is relational

  572. personal

  573. and it's sacrificial

  574. you know

  575. the sad

  576. and tragic

  577. story of the Bible

  578. is that

  579. God's people

  580. fail over and over

  581. to be the

  582. covenant partners

  583. that we swear

  584. to be

  585. right

  586. we persist

  587. in going

  588. our own way

  589. as it says

  590. in verse 19

  591. but the sweet

  592. and triumphant

  593. story of the Bible

  594. is that though

  595. we fail

  596. God's covenant

  597. love

  598. never fails us

  599. the Lord

  600. would send

  601. his own

  602. eternal

  603. and beloved

  604. son

  605. Jesus

  606. to be

  607. this faithful

  608. Israelite

  609. to be the one

  610. true

  611. human being

  612. to do for us

  613. what we cannot

  614. do for ourselves

  615. Jesus is the

  616. only one

  617. whose heart

  618. does not

  619. turn away

  620. from the Lord

  621. he's the only

  622. one

  623. who rather

  624. had his heart

  625. turned toward

  626. the Lord

  627. every moment

  628. of every day

  629. of his life

  630. and when he came

  631. to the end

  632. of that beautiful

  633. life

  634. on the night

  635. before he was

  636. to be

  637. crucified

  638. he offered

  639. us these

  640. gifts

  641. of bread

  642. and wine

  643. and he said

  644. this broken

  645. bread of my

  646. body

  647. reveals what

  648. I've come

  649. to do for you

  650. in my

  651. incarnate

  652. person

  653. and this

  654. outpoured

  655. wine

  656. of my

  657. blood

  658. is showing

  659. you what

  660. I've come

  661. to do for you

  662. in my

  663. atoning

  664. work

  665. work

  666. and what

  667. is the

  668. word

  669. that Jesus

  670. uses

  671. when he

  672. gives us

  673. this meal

  674. he says

  675. this is my

  676. blood

  677. of the

  678. new

  679. covenant

  680. covenant

  681. Jesus

  682. is completing

  683. the covenant

  684. renewal

  685. that began

  686. with Israel

  687. on the

  688. plains

  689. of Moab

  690. when he

  691. says

  692. this blood

  693. of the

  694. covenant

  695. is being

  696. poured out

  697. for the

  698. forgiveness

  699. of sins

  700. you see

  701. the Lord

  702. knew

  703. when he

  704. entered

  705. into

  706. a covenant

  707. with human

  708. beings

  709. like us

  710. that it

  711. would cost

  712. him

  713. dearly

  714. that it

  715. would be

  716. an absolute

  717. bloody

  718. mess

  719. but he

  720. did it

  721. anyway

  722. because

  723. he loves

  724. us

  725. he did

  726. it knowing

  727. that he

  728. would take

  729. all of the

  730. curses

  731. of our

  732. breaking

  733. of the

  734. covenant

  735. so that

  736. we would

  737. get all

  738. the blessings

  739. of his

  740. keeping

  741. the covenant

  742. as if

  743. we

  744. ourselves

  745. had kept

  746. the covenant

  747. Jesus

  748. is going

  749. to enter

  750. in to

  751. be torn

  752. to pieces

  753. the nails

  754. the spears

  755. the thorns

  756. are going

  757. to tear

  758. him apart

  759. why

  760. so that

  761. we can

  762. have

  763. what Paul

  764. calls

  765. the righteousness

  766. peace

  767. and joy

  768. in the

  769. Holy Spirit

  770. all of our

  771. hearts

  772. turning away

  773. from God

  774. all of that

  775. root

  776. of bitter

  777. poison

  778. that destroys

  779. the whole

  780. thing

  781. all of that

  782. disaster

  783. that results

  784. when I persist

  785. in going

  786. my own way

  787. all of that

  788. will be poured

  789. out on

  790. Jesus

  791. on his

  792. cross

  793. and this

  794. is why

  795. the apostle

  796. Paul

  797. is telling

  798. us

  799. in Galatians

  800. 3

  801. he says

  802. Christ

  803. redeemed

  804. us

  805. by becoming

  806. a curse

  807. for us

  808. he redeemed

  809. us that

  810. blessing

  811. that the

  812. blessing

  813. given to

  814. Abraham

  815. might come

  816. to us

  817. through

  818. him

  819. do you

  820. realize

  821. what Jesus

  822. has done

  823. for you

  824. in his

  825. perfect

  826. life

  827. he

  828. completely

  829. fulfilled

  830. the terms

  831. of the

  832. covenant

  833. and he

  834. earned

  835. the covenant

  836. blessing

  837. so that

  838. God

  839. could love

  840. you

  841. absolutely

  842. unconditionally

  843. and in

  844. his

  845. sacrificial

  846. death

  847. he

  848. completely

  849. satisfied

  850. all the

  851. curses

  852. of this

  853. covenant

  854. so that

  855. he could

  856. remove it

  857. from anyone

  858. who would

  859. ask them

  860. ask him

  861. to take

  862. it away

  863. from them

  864. and friends

  865. do you know

  866. what Jesus

  867. was doing

  868. in those

  869. final moments

  870. on his

  871. cross

  872. as he

  873. was dying

  874. for the

  875. sins of

  876. the world

  877. he turned

  878. his heart

  879. and worshipped

  880. toward the

  881. Lord

  882. as he

  883. was writhing

  884. in agony

  885. he cried

  886. out

  887. father

  888. into your

  889. hands

  890. I commit

  891. my spirit

  892. father

  893. into your

  894. hands

  895. I commit

  896. my spirit

  897. it's a

  898. prayer

  899. Jesus

  900. prayed

  901. thousands

  902. of times

  903. it came

  904. straight

  905. out of

  906. his

  907. prayer

  908. book

  909. from

  910. psalm

  911. 31

  912. verse

  913. five

  914. father

  915. into your

  916. hands

  917. I commit

  918. my spirit

  919. you know

  920. we spend

  921. most of our

  922. time attempting

  923. to get

  924. our lives

  925. out of

  926. God's

  927. hands

  928. and into

  929. our

  930. hands

  931. and in

  932. this

  933. dialogue

  934. deep

  935. in the

  936. heart

  937. of the

  938. trinity

  939. with

  940. Jesus

  941. on his

  942. cross

  943. he does

  944. for us

  945. what we

  946. cannot

  947. do

  948. in this

  949. one

  950. last

  951. confident

  952. reckless

  953. act

  954. of faith

  955. Jesus

  956. willingly

  957. exuberantly

  958. commends

  959. the purpose

  960. of his

  961. whole

  962. life

  963. and his

  964. whole

  965. work

  966. into the

  967. strong

  968. loving

  969. hands

  970. of his

  971. father

  972. father

  973. into your

  974. hands

  975. I commit

  976. my spirit

  977. and that

  978. I hope

  979. becomes the

  980. prayer

  981. for all

  982. of us

  983. who know

  984. the

  985. depths

  986. which

  987. Jesus

  988. sacrificed

  989. himself

  990. to renew

  991. this

  992. covenant

  993. for us

  994. may it

  995. become our

  996. prayer

  997. tomorrow

  998. morning

  999. and the

  1000. day after

  1001. that

  1002. father

  1003. into your

  1004. hands

  1005. I commit

  1006. my spirit

  1007. in the name

  1008. of the

  1009. father

  1010. son

  1011. and holy

  1012. spirit

  1013. amen

  1014. he

  1015. to pour

  1016. him

  1017. together

  1018. to

  1019. me

  1020. am

  1021. in the name
