  7. Good morning. My name is Lindsay Ng and I am a youth at Christchurch.

  8. Today's reading is a reading from the prophet Haggai.

  9. It came by the hand of Haggai the prophet.

  10. Is it a time for you yourselves to dwell in your paneled houses

  11. while this house lies in ruins?

  12. Now therefore, thus says the Lord of hosts,

  13. consider your ways.

  14. You have sown much and harvested little.

  15. You eat, but you never have enough.

  16. You drink, but you never have your fill.

  17. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm.

  18. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.

  19. Thus says the Lord of hosts, consider your ways.

  20. Go up to the hills and bring wood and build the house

  21. that I may take pleasure in it and that I may be glorified, says the Lord.

  22. You look for much and behold, it came to little.

  23. And when you brought it home, I blew it away.

  24. Why, declares the Lord of hosts,

  25. because of my house that lies in ruins

  26. while each of you busies himself with his own house.

  27. Therefore, the heavens above you have withheld the dew

  28. and the earth has withheld its produce.

  29. And I have called for a drought on the land

  30. and the hills on the grain,

  31. the new wine, the oil on what the ground brings forth,

  32. on man and beast and in all their labors.

  33. The grass withers and the flowers fade,

  34. but the word of our God stands forever.

  35. Good morning.

  36. My name is Andrew and I'm one of the pastors here

  37. and I'm looking forward to sharing God's word with you this morning.

  38. Will you join me in prayer?

  39. Father, we want to hear from you today.

  40. And I just pray as your mouthpiece

  41. that you would make much of my little,

  42. that the words of my mouth and the meditations of my heart

  43. would be pleasing to you and be good for your people.

  44. You are our Lord, our rock, and our redeemer.

  45. We want to hear from you.

  46. We want to hear from you.

  47. We want to hear from you.

  48. Fill our hearts with love toward you

  49. and awe at who you are

  50. and a desire to follow you

  51. even when it's hard.

  52. Give us your spirit to do that, we pray.

  53. We pray all these things in the name of Jesus.

  54. Amen.

  55. So like Jonathan had mentioned,

  56. like Eric had mentioned,

  57. today is the first Sunday of Advent.

  58. We're beginning the Christian liturgical year.

  59. And Advent, it means coming, right?

  60. So this is a season where we anticipate

  61. and we prepare for the coming of the Messiah King.

  62. Just as the people of God in ancient Israel

  63. waited for the coming Messiah,

  64. so the people of God today,

  65. we await the return,

  66. the second coming of the Messiah.

  67. This is a season of longing and hope.

  68. And can I just say that it's so important,

  69. it's so important to hold these two things together,

  70. longing and hope.

  71. Longing and hope.

  72. Because longing without hope is just despair.

  73. And hope without longing,

  74. it's really devalued.

  75. Hope without longing is devalued.

  76. Now as we enter into Advent today

  77. with the words of the prophet Haggai

  78. to these returning citizens in Israel,

  79. that's what's going on here,

  80. they're returning from exile,

  81. I think we get a picture in this story

  82. of what happens when we long,

  83. yet without hope.

  84. And I think we're going to see that

  85. when we long without hope,

  86. we'll always end up attaching ourselves

  87. to lesser hopes

  88. that will eventually let us down.

  89. And the constant letdowns

  90. only lead us into a downward spiral

  91. that increases our longing

  92. and our disappointment

  93. and our despair even more.

  94. And not only that,

  95. but the downward spiral

  96. will also just only turn our attention inward,

  97. make us inward focus on ourselves

  98. in an individualistic, defensive,

  99. and self-preserving posture.

  100. That's what it does

  101. when we long without hope.

  102. That's what it does.

  103. It's no good for anyone.

  104. It's no good for ourselves.

  105. Longing without hope

  106. preoccupies us with our own houses

  107. and our own fields

  108. and our own lands

  109. and our own security.

  110. But the good news of Advent,

  111. the good news of the gospel

  112. is that there is hope.

  113. There is a king.

  114. He has come and he's coming again.

  115. And he's building for us

  116. an imperishable house,

  117. an imperishable kingdom

  118. because he wants to dwell with us forever.

  119. The good news of Advent

  120. is that when we sing,

  121. O come, O come, Emmanuel,

  122. which means,

  123. O come, O come,

  124. God with us,

  125. he answers us and says,

  126. I am.

  127. The God and king of the universe,

  128. when we say,

  129. O come, O come, Emmanuel,

  130. he says,

  131. I am coming.

  132. I am coming to be with you.

  133. And in fact,

  134. I'm building a house.

  135. I'm building a house

  136. to be with you forever.

  137. And that's the point

  138. of our text this morning

  139. as we enter into the Advent season

  140. through the prophet Haggai.

  141. God was saying to his

  142. groaning people,

  143. Israel, back then,

  144. and he's saying to us

  145. groaning new covenant people,

  146. today,

  147. I hear your groaning.

  148. I know your longings,

  149. but your greatest need

  150. isn't your own house.

  151. Your greatest need

  152. is my house.

  153. And you're invited.

  154. What you need most,

  155. what is of the utmost importance

  156. is not your own house,

  157. but my house.

  158. Or as Haggai calls it

  159. in verse two,

  160. the house of the Lord.

  161. The house of the Lord.

  162. Now, before we dive

  163. into the context

  164. of Haggai chapter two,

  165. I want us to understand

  166. the significance

  167. of the house of the Lord.

  168. We need a wide-angle view

  169. from Scripture

  170. of what the house

  171. of the Lord is.

  172. And to put it simply,

  173. it's so much more

  174. than a building, right?

  175. To put it simply,

  176. the house of the Lord

  177. is another way

  178. of talking about

  179. the temple in Jerusalem.

  180. And man,

  181. there's so much I'd like to say

  182. about the temple,

  183. but let me just say this.

  184. The key point of the temple,

  185. the house of the Lord,

  186. is the presence of God.

  187. The presence of God.

  188. The meeting place

  189. between heaven and earth,

  190. between God and humanity.

  191. And this has always been

  192. God's heart

  193. from the very beginning.

  194. From the very beginning

  195. of creation.

  196. In the book of Genesis,

  197. we see that God

  198. has always sought

  199. to build a house,

  200. a dwelling place,

  201. to be with His people.

  202. Like while every other

  203. ancient Near Eastern religion

  204. placed images of their gods

  205. in their temples,

  206. God, He created Adam and Eve

  207. in His own image.

  208. And He placed them

  209. in the garden.

  210. And He made them priests

  211. in that garden.

  212. He gave them the same job

  213. that He gave the priests

  214. of Israel.

  215. He said, guard it,

  216. cultivate it,

  217. protect it,

  218. nurture it.

  219. That's exactly what He said

  220. to the priests

  221. of the tabernacle

  222. and the temple as well.

  223. And most importantly,

  224. there in the garden,

  225. God walked with us.

  226. God walked with His people.

  227. He met with them.

  228. He walked with them

  229. and they enjoyed

  230. each other's presence.

  231. And this is how it begins

  232. and this is also how it ends.

  233. At the end of the Bible,

  234. in Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  235. Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  236. it talks about the city

  237. and the temple

  238. and the final dwelling place

  239. of God and His people.

  240. And it says this,

  241. I saw the holy city,

  242. the new Jerusalem,

  243. coming down out of heaven

  244. from God.

  245. And I heard a loud voice

  246. from the throne saying,

  247. look,

  248. God's dwelling place

  249. is now among the people

  250. and He will dwell with them.

  251. They will be His people

  252. and God Himself

  253. will be with them

  254. and be their God.

  255. He will wipe away

  256. every tear from their eyes.

  257. There will be no more death

  258. or mourning

  259. or crying or pain

  260. for the old order of things

  261. has passed away.

  262. And then He says,

  263. I did not see a temple

  264. in the city

  265. because the Lord God Almighty

  266. and the Lamb

  267. are its temple.

  268. So see,

  269. this has always been

  270. God's intention.

  271. Even in spite of Adam and Eve's

  272. sinful rebellion,

  273. their failure as priests

  274. to guard that garden

  275. and their open rebellion

  276. against God

  277. in His original dwelling place,

  278. God chose mercy.

  279. God chose grace

  280. time and time again

  281. and He never abandoned

  282. His plan

  283. to dwell with His people,

  284. to be with His people.

  285. That is the heart of God,

  286. to be present with us,

  287. God with us.

  288. And He made covenants

  289. to ensure that this would happen,

  290. covenants with sinful people,

  291. sinful Abraham,

  292. sinful Israel,

  293. dwelling among them

  294. in their mobile tabernacle,

  295. right?

  296. After delivering them

  297. from Egypt

  298. even while they complained

  299. and whined

  300. and groaned

  301. and grumbled,

  302. He still dwelt with them

  303. in that moving tabernacle.

  304. And then,

  305. dwelling with them

  306. for an even longer time,

  307. He dwelt with them

  308. in Jerusalem,

  309. in Solomon's temple,

  310. even while the nation

  311. of Israel

  312. continued

  313. with their injustice

  314. and their infidelity.

  315. I'm glad it's done.

  316. God's a God

  317. who wants to dwell with us.

  318. He wanted to dwell

  319. with the people

  320. with Adam and Eve

  321. in the garden.

  322. He wanted to dwell

  323. with His rescued Israelites

  324. out of Egypt

  325. in the tabernacle.

  326. He wanted to dwell

  327. with His sinful,

  328. unjust,

  329. wayward,

  330. idolatrous people

  331. in Solomon's temple.

  332. And even though

  333. He would eventually

  334. send the Babylonians

  335. and come

  336. and they would destroy Jerusalem,

  337. they would destroy

  338. the temple,

  339. and He would allow

  340. that first temple

  341. to be destroyed,

  342. even then,

  343. He never gave up

  344. on His covenant

  345. with them.

  346. He never gave up

  347. on His promise

  348. that He would be with them.

  349. And He brings them back,

  350. right?

  351. He brings them back

  352. after 70 years

  353. from Babylonian exile

  354. just as He promised.

  355. And then you have

  356. a small remnant

  357. of about 50,000 Israelites

  358. who've chosen to return

  359. and rebuild

  360. and resettle

  361. in their homeland.

  362. And they begin to farm.

  363. And they begin to rebuild

  364. the walls of Jerusalem again.

  365. And most importantly,

  366. they begin working

  367. on the second temple.

  368. And they laid down

  369. its foundation

  370. as one of the first things

  371. they did

  372. after they got back

  373. from exile,

  374. all because God's plan

  375. has always been

  376. to dwell with His people.

  377. And this brings us

  378. to where we are here today

  379. in the book of Haggai,

  380. to our text today,

  381. these words from the prophet.

  382. Here at the time

  383. of Haggai's prophetic words,

  384. about 16 years, okay?

  385. 16 years have gone by

  386. since those original 50,000

  387. have returned from Babylon

  388. to Jerusalem.

  389. But after these 16 years,

  390. it's still just the foundation.

  391. No one has built

  392. on top of it yet.

  393. And so this is the context

  394. that the prophet Haggai

  395. is speaking into.

  396. This is what he wants to,

  397. this is the reason

  398. why he's giving God's word

  399. to them, okay?

  400. There's nothing done yet.

  401. And he says in verse 2

  402. to the leaders of Israel,

  403. to the priest Joshua,

  404. to the governors of Rebubal,

  405. he says this,

  406. Thus says the Lord of hosts,

  407. These people say

  408. the time has not yet come

  409. to rebuild the house

  410. of the Lord.

  411. Is it a time for you,

  412. yourselves,

  413. to dwell in your paneled houses

  414. while this house

  415. lies in ruins?

  416. Saying,

  417. you built your houses,

  418. how come you haven't built mine?

  419. And, you know,

  420. I think we might read this

  421. and there might be

  422. a tendency to

  423. treat these Israelites harshly.

  424. Why don't you just obey God?

  425. Why don't you put

  426. first things first?

  427. But let's be sympathetic,

  428. all right?

  429. Let's be sympathetic

  430. and kind of think

  431. of some reasons

  432. why they might have

  433. left the temple

  434. in ruins.

  435. For starters,

  436. they were returning

  437. from exile.

  438. Did they have tons of money?

  439. Probably not.

  440. Did they have tons

  441. of resources?

  442. Probably not.

  443. Were they expert,

  444. you know,

  445. civil engineers

  446. and architects?

  447. Probably not.

  448. And we also have to

  449. imagine how daunting

  450. a task this would have been

  451. for them to return

  452. to a nation still

  453. bearing the scars

  454. of that complete destruction

  455. of their beloved city.

  456. Huge piles of rubble

  457. to get out of the way

  458. before you can even

  459. start building, right?

  460. Probably not a lot

  461. of building materials,

  462. easily accessible.

  463. And then the land itself

  464. and their ancestral homes

  465. in disarray

  466. and disrepair.

  467. The land had probably

  468. lain fallow

  469. for a very long time.

  470. There were people

  471. who were left in Israel too,

  472. people usually

  473. from the lower classes,

  474. and now these people

  475. had moved into

  476. a lot of these lands

  477. so there were legal disputes

  478. about who belonged to

  479. or what land belonged to whom,

  480. not knowing if,

  481. you know,

  482. this land is mine

  483. or this land is yours.

  484. How are we going to

  485. settle this?

  486. The king of Persia,

  487. is he going to

  488. settle this for us?

  489. And if you read back

  490. in the biblical accounts

  491. of Ezra and Nehemiah,

  492. you'd also know

  493. that there was

  494. foreign opposition

  495. to the rebuilding

  496. of the city

  497. and to the rebuilding

  498. of the temple.

  499. And all the builders

  500. actually at one point

  501. had to hold both

  502. a shovel and a sword

  503. at the same time

  504. because they were

  505. always under threat

  506. as they were trying

  507. to work on

  508. the city of God.

  509. Verse 8,

  510. God tells them,

  511. go up that hill

  512. and get that wood,

  513. bring it down.

  514. Who wants to go up a hill

  515. and carry wood down,

  516. right?

  517. It's a lot of work.

  518. It's going out of my way.

  519. And then there's also

  520. the demotivation factor,

  521. right?

  522. Imagine how hard

  523. it would have been

  524. to believe that God

  525. actually still wanted

  526. to dwell with them at all

  527. after 70 years of exile.

  528. Imagine how hard

  529. it would have been

  530. to believe that the

  531. second temple,

  532. whose foundation,

  533. it really paled

  534. in comparison

  535. to the first,

  536. was going to actually

  537. be significant

  538. in the plan of God.

  539. This temple that still

  540. was under foreign occupation,

  541. it was much smaller,

  542. much less spectacular

  543. than the previous one.

  544. How could this second temple

  545. that we've just scrounged up,

  546. how can this have

  547. any significance

  548. like the prophets

  549. had foretold?

  550. In Ezra chapter 3,

    Ezra 3 chapter mention

  551. there's this really vivid

  552. and awkward

  553. and uninspiring description

  554. of the temple's foundation.

  555. It says this,

  556. And all the people

  557. gave a great shout

  558. of praise to the Lord

  559. because the foundation

  560. of the house

  561. of the Lord was laid.

  562. But many of the older priests

  563. and Levites

  564. and family heads

  565. who had seen

  566. the former temple

  567. wept aloud

  568. when they saw

  569. the foundation

  570. of this temple

  571. being laid.

  572. While many others

  573. shouted for joy,

  574. no one could distinguish

  575. the sound

  576. of the shouts of joy

  577. from the sound

  578. of weeping.

  579. Not exactly

  580. an inspiring time

  581. to build the temple, right?

  582. And then lastly,

  583. you just have the scarcity

  584. and the drought

  585. and the famine

  586. that they're dealing with

  587. in the land.

  588. I think it's in verse 8,

  589. which they don't even realize,

  590. but it was God himself

  591. who was preventing them

  592. from prospering

  593. because they let his house

  594. stay in ruins.

  595. Verse 9, it says,

  596. You looked for much

  597. and behold,

  598. it came to little.

  599. And when you brought it home,

  600. I blew it away.

  601. Why?

  602. declares the Lord of hosts.

  603. Because of my house

  604. that lies in ruins.

  605. While each of you

  606. busies himself

  607. with his own house,

  608. therefore the heavens above

  609. you have withheld the dew

  610. and the earth

  611. has withheld its produce.

  612. And I have called

  613. for a drought

  614. on the land

  615. and the hills,

  616. on the grain,

  617. the new wine,

  618. the oil,

  619. on what the ground

  620. brings forth,

  621. on man and beast

  622. and on all their labors.

  623. They were occupied

  624. with their own houses

  625. instead of God's

  626. and unwittingly

  627. they were digging

  628. even deeper holes

  629. for themselves.

  630. So I ask you again,

  631. can you imagine

  632. being very motivated

  633. to build this second temple?

  634. Can you imagine

  635. going through a drought

  636. and famine

  637. and such scarcity

  638. and having the faith

  639. to stop working

  640. on your own household

  641. and start working

  642. on God's?

  643. Can you imagine

  644. why they might have said,

  645. it's just not the time

  646. right now in verse 2.

  647. It's just not the time

  648. to build

  649. the house

  650. of the Lord.

  651. And maybe that's how

  652. a lot of us feel

  653. with regard to

  654. how much we are

  655. wanting to invest

  656. in the house

  657. of the Lord.

  658. It's just not

  659. the right time for me.

  660. It's not the right season.

  661. But I think the question

  662. for us this morning

  663. from God's word

  664. is when is the right time?

  665. When is the right time?

  666. I was really convicted

  667. the other week.

  668. I'll tell you two stories.

  669. There was a time

  670. in seminary,

  671. I remember,

  672. and I was trying

  673. super hard

  674. to get good grades.

  675. I really wanted

  676. to get into a Ph.D. program,

  677. but my school

  678. in Philadelphia,

  679. Westminster Seminary,

  680. has a reputation

  681. for being quite

  682. academically rigorous.

  683. Like, I think

  684. if you got a 95%,

  685. it was an A-.

  686. It was crazy.

  687. I was trying so hard

  688. to get a good GPA,

  689. get my Ph.D.

  690. so I could serve God

  691. and fulfill all the plans

  692. that I had

  693. to serve Him.

  694. And, you know,

  695. I worked hard.

  696. I worked my tail off

  697. and I remember

  698. there was one point

  699. in the semester,

  700. oh, probably several points,

  701. but there was one time

  702. I remember,

  703. not only did Westminster

  704. encourage us

  705. to study hard,

  706. but also encourage us

  707. to develop spiritually

  708. and they had chapel regularly,

  709. they had times of meeting

  710. with our prayer groups

  711. and I remember

  712. one time

  713. I was hanging out

  714. with my friend

  715. in one of these public areas

  716. and he said,

  717. yo, are you going to

  718. go to prayer group now?

  719. And I said,

  720. no, man,

  721. I don't got time to pray.

  722. I don't got time to pray.

  723. And of course,

  724. the vice,

  725. or the associate dean

  726. was there

  727. in the same room

  728. overhearing my conversation

  729. and she said,

  730. hey, man,

  731. you don't have time

  732. not to pray.

  733. And she got me.

  734. She got me.

  735. I didn't value

  736. the presence of God

  737. and I didn't

  738. see my time

  739. as worthy of giving

  740. to just be with him

  741. in prayer.

  742. Another story

  743. I wanted to tell you

  744. is I was taking a walk

  745. in Alameda

  746. the other week

  747. with Peter Claussen,

  748. one of our deacons,

  749. and I was just sharing

  750. with him

  751. some of the things

  752. I'm working on

  753. in my life.

  754. Right now,

  755. me and our family,

  756. we're really trying

  757. to work on

  758. observing the Sabbath

  759. in a more faithful

  760. and structured

  761. and intentional way.

  762. And I said,

  763. here's my plan,

  764. but I'm going to

  765. start ramping up

  766. after this milestone

  767. in our life.

  768. And Peter looked at me

  769. and he's like,

  770. oh, you're my pastor,

  771. but can I give you

  772. some advice?

  773. And he said,

  774. don't wait, man.

  775. Waiting for that right time

  776. to do what's right

  777. is not the way

  778. of the people of God.

  779. It's not the way

  780. of the people of God.

  781. God's word to us today

  782. is that it's always

  783. the right time.

  784. It's always the right time

  785. to build the Lord's house

  786. above and beyond

  787. our own houses.

  788. It's always the right time

  789. to build God's house

  790. above and beyond

  791. our own houses.

  792. And you might be asking,

  793. okay, what does that even mean?

  794. What does it even mean

  795. to build the house

  796. of the Lord?

  797. Does it mean like,

  798. you know,

  799. yesterday when everyone came

  800. and they put up

  801. these nice decorations,

  802. thank you everyone

  803. for doing that?

  804. Well, yeah, sort of,

  805. but it's also a lot

  806. more than that as well.

  807. And I'm not saying

  808. we all need to,

  809. you know,

  810. become contractors

  811. and go build churches,

  812. but Paul says

  813. in 1 Corinthians 6

  814. that the people of God,

  815. the body of Christ,

  816. we are the temple of God

  817. and the Holy Spirit

  818. dwells within us.

  819. So when I ask,

  820. in what ways

  821. are we building

  822. the house of the Lord?

  823. I'm asking,

  824. in what ways

  825. are we building up

  826. the body of Christ

  827. with our time

  828. and with our talent

  829. and with our treasure?

  830. And I'm not just saying

  831. a simple volunteer more,

  832. give money more,

  833. you know,

  834. here at Christ Church

  835. we like to say

  836. it's awesome

  837. if you could worship

  838. plus two, right?

  839. Come to worship,

  840. maybe get involved

  841. in a community group

  842. and maybe serve

  843. on some kind of team here,

  844. but it's so much more

  845. than that.

  846. What I really want

  847. to challenge us today

  848. is to consider

  849. our priorities.

  850. I want to challenge

  851. our very priorities,

  852. like what if the church,

  853. what if the body

  854. of Christ

  855. came before our jobs?

  856. And I'm not saying

  857. quit all your jobs

  858. and join me and Jonathan

  859. to be pastors,

  860. but like what if

  861. we thought about

  862. and weighed

  863. the impacts

  864. of our actions

  865. on the church?

  866. Like when we decide

  867. to move away,

  868. move homes,

  869. take a more demanding job

  870. or take that promotion

  871. with maybe better pay

  872. but hours less conducive

  873. to leading people

  874. into deeper relationships

  875. with Christ

  876. and His church

  877. through community

  878. and for the city?

  879. And I say this

  880. with hesitation

  881. because the last thing

  882. I want is for us

  883. to be some kind of cult

  884. and the church is big

  885. and we are so glad

  886. that so many people

  887. have come through

  888. these doors

  889. and left

  890. and are now serving

  891. at other churches

  892. in other contexts.

  893. But what I'm trying

  894. to press upon us,

  895. what I'm trying

  896. to press upon

  897. is where does the church,

  898. both local

  899. and global,

  900. the temple of God,

  901. where's the people

  902. of God,

  903. the dwelling place

  904. of the Holy Spirit

  905. land on each

  906. of our priority lists?

  907. And I know this

  908. is a big ask

  909. because I know

  910. I'm not asking

  911. most of you

  912. to stop dealing drugs,

  913. stop murdering people,

  914. stop robbing banks, right?

  915. Usually when we neglect

  916. to do the most important thing

  917. it's not because

  918. we're doing something

  919. evil, bad,

  920. or wrong,

  921. but it's almost always

  922. because we're so busy

  923. doing good things, right?

  924. And necessary things.

  925. But God is calling us

  926. to put first things first

  927. here in Haggai chapter 1.

    Haggai 1 chapter mention

  928. To trust Him

  929. with the good

  930. and necessary things

  931. that we often

  932. wrongly put before

  933. the ultimate things.

  934. We've got to trust Him.

  935. He's the one

  936. who closed the heavens

  937. and withheld the grain

  938. and the oil

  939. and the dew

  940. from these people of Israel

  941. because they did not

  942. put first things first.

  943. Will He not also

  944. provide all those things

  945. richly for us

  946. when we follow Him?

  947. And I hope I've got

  948. some of us thinking now,

  949. okay, well how can I be

  950. building up the house

  951. of the Lord,

  952. the temple of God, right?

  953. The church.

  954. Hmm.

  955. Let me think about it.

  956. Let me pray about it.

  957. See what doors God

  958. opens up.

  959. And I'm thankful

  960. if you're even taking

  961. a step like that

  962. in your minds right now.

  963. But let me also say,

  964. are there not some

  965. trivial things

  966. that we can be giving up

  967. right now?

  968. We often say,

  969. oh, it's not time

  970. for me to serve God

  971. in this or that way.

  972. I need to wait on God

  973. and hear from Him

  974. so I know exactly

  975. how I'm going

  976. to serve Him.

  977. Did we put that much thought

  978. into our decision

  979. to watch Netflix

  980. last night?

  981. And again,

  982. I have to be careful.

  983. God is not anti-Netflix

  984. or fun

  985. or recreation

  986. or rest.

  987. But His Word

  988. is always challenging us

  989. to constantly examine

  990. our priorities

  991. and not to grow

  992. in complacency

  993. in our paneled houses.

  994. And can I just

  995. start wrapping up

  996. by saying this?

  997. This is not just

  998. a matter of obey.

  999. Give more.

  1000. Obey harder.

  1001. Try harder.

1002. Like we like to say here,

  1003. I don't want

  1004. your generosity.

  1005. I don't want

  1006. the generosity

  1007. of your time,

  1008. talent,

  1009. and treasures

  1010. from you.

  1011. I want generosity

  1012. for you.

1013. I want you to know

  1014. the liberating

  1015. way of being

  1016. so influenced

  1017. by the gospel

  1018. of grace,

  1019. the abundant grace

  1020. of God.

  1021. God doesn't want

  1022. more, more, more

  1023. from us.

  1024. Like He's got this

  1025. checklist of all

  1026. that we have

  1027. and He's grading us

  1028. on how much

  1029. we're going to give.

  1030. He just wants us.

  1031. He just wants us.

  1032. People who want

  1033. to build the house

  1034. of the Lord,

  1035. people who want

  1036. to invest

  1037. in the temple,

  1038. they don't do so

  1039. primarily out of duty

  1040. but out of conviction.

1041. The house of the Lord,

  1042. the temple of God,

  1043. the new covenant

  1044. people of God

  1045. is where the very

  1046. presence of God

  1047. resides.

1048. Like what if we came

  1049. to church believing

  1050. that?

  1051. That this is where

  1052. the very presence

  1053. of God dwells.

1054. The point of the temple

  1055. is not to have

  1056. an institution

  1057. to give to

  1058. or serve

  1059. or support.

  1060. Like I said

  1061. in the beginning,

1062. the point of the temple

  1063. has always been

  1064. the presence of God

  1065. with His people.

  1066. You can ask,

  1067. does it do anything

1068. to us to hear that?

  1069. That God,

  1070. the most high creator

  1071. of the universe,

  1072. desired not just

  1073. to be God

  1074. but to be God

  1075. with us.

  1076. God with us.

  1077. Emmanuel.

  1078. Something that

  1079. my three-year-old daughter

  1080. has been saying

1081. a lot to me lately,

1082. one of the nice things,

1083. there are tons of other

  1084. not very nice things,

1085. but one of the things

  1086. that melts my heart

  1087. every single time

  1088. is she says,

  1089. Daddy,

1090. can you be with me?

  1091. Daddy,

1092. can you get me more milk?

  1093. Well,

1094. she says that every morning.

  1095. Daddy,

1096. can you get me more goldfish?

1097. She doesn't say that anymore.

1098. But she says quite frequently,

  1099. Daddy,

1100. can you be with me?

  1101. She doesn't want me

  1102. to do something

  1103. with her

  1104. or for her.

1105. She just wants me to be.

1106. She wants all of me

  1107. just with her.

  1108. She wants my presence

1109. and it just melts my heart

  1110. every single time

  1111. because I feel loved,

  1112. I feel adored,

  1113. I feel honored.

1114. What if we said that to God?

1115. And can we hear him

  1116. saying that to us?

1117. Can I be with you?

  1118. That's what I want,

  1119. he says.

  1120. That's what the temple

  1121. is about.

  1122. That's his heart.

  1123. God with us.

1124. He wants to be with us.

  1125. John chapter 1,

    John 1 chapter mention

  1126. in the beginning

  1127. was the Word

  1128. and the Word

  1129. was with God

  1130. and the Word

  1131. was God.

  1132. Verse 14,

  1133. and the Word

  1134. became flesh

  1135. and dwelt among us,

  1136. literally tabernacled

  1137. amongst us.

  1138. Do we realize

  1139. what great lengths

  1140. he's gone to

  1141. to be with us

  1142. in Christ?

  1143. God has emptied himself,

  1144. taking on humanity

  1145. to be with us

1146. and not just to be God

  1147. with us

  1148. but to be God

  1149. crucified

  1150. by and for us.

  1151. God with us,

  1152. crucified

  1153. in Jesus Christ,

  1154. God with us.

  1155. He's the one

1156. who went up that hill.

1157. He went up that hill

  1158. and carried that wood

  1159. because he wanted

  1160. to be with us.

  1161. Tear this temple down,

1162. he said in John chapter 2,

    John 2 chapter mention

1163. and I will raise it up

  1164. in three days.

  1165. And he did.

1166. And he wants to raise us up too.

1167. He wants us to know

  1168. union with him,

  1169. presence of God

  1170. with him.

  1171. Christ Church,

  1172. the temple has come

  1173. in Christ.

  1174. And the church

  1175. is his body

  1176. whom he purchased

  1177. with his blood

  1178. and united himself with

  1179. and filled

  1180. with his spirit.

  1181. that's what this is.

1182. In the book of Haggai

1183. and in the person of Christ,

  1184. God is inviting us

  1185. today.

  1186. He's saying,

1187. I want to be with you.

1188. I want to be with you.

1189. I want to dwell with you.

  1190. I am building a house

  1191. for us

  1192. to dwell together

  1193. forever in.

  1194. Will you join me?

  1195. Will you join me?

1196. Will you pray with me?

  1197. Lord,

  1198. if it

  1199. does not affect us,

  1200. God,

  1201. that you,

1202. the God of the universe,

  1203. the I am,

  1204. desire to be

  1205. God with us.

  1206. That your son says,

  1207. surely I am

  1208. with you

  1209. always,

  1210. even to the end

  1211. of the age.

  1212. If that does not

  1213. affect us,

  1214. Lord,

  1215. would you

  1216. wreck our stony hearts?

  1217. Show us

  1218. that our deepest,

  1219. our only need

  1220. is the presence

  1221. of God.

  1222. That's what we need.

  1223. Help us to prioritize

  1224. the presence of God,

  1225. the house of God

  1226. over our own

  1227. households,

1228. no matter what the cost.

1229. And help us to know

  1230. what great lengths

  1231. you went to,

  1232. what costs you paid

  1233. to build your house

  1234. amongst us,

  1235. to be with us,

  1236. to be our God.

  1237. Lord,

  1238. we pray these things

1239. in the name of Jesus.

  1240. Amen.
