  5. Hi, I'm Lori, and I'm part of the Oakland community.

  6. Today's reading is first from Isaiah 60, verses 1-16, and second from John 1, verses 14-18.

    Isaiah 60:1–16 John 1:14–18

  7. A reading from the prophet Isaiah.

  8. Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

  9. See, darkness covers the earth, and thick darkness is over the peoples.

  10. But the Lord rises on you, and his glory appears over you.

  11. Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

  12. Lift up your eyes and look about you.

  13. All assemble and come to you.

  14. Your sons come from afar, and your daughters are carried on the hip.

  15. Then you will look and be radiant.

  16. Your heart will throb and swell with joy.

  17. The wealth on the seas will be brought to you.

  18. To the riches of the nations will come.

  19. I'm sorry, to you the riches of the nations will come.

  20. Herds of camels will cover your land.

  21. Young camels of Midian and Epa.

  22. And from Sheba will come, and all from Sheba will come,

  23. bearing gold and incense, and proclaiming the praise of the Lord.

  24. All Kedar's flocks will be gathered to you.

  25. The rams of Nebioth will serve you.

  26. And they will be accepted as offerings on my altar.

  27. And I will adorn my glorious temple.

  28. Who are these that fly along like clouds, like doves to their nests?

  29. Surely the islands look to me.

  30. In the lead are the ships of Tarshish, bringing your children from afar,

  31. with their silver and gold, to the honor of the Lord your God,

  32. the Holy One of Israel.

  33. For he has endowed you with splendor.

  34. Foreigners will rebuild your walls, and their kings will serve you.

  35. Though in anger I struck you, in favor I will show you compassion.

  36. Your gates will always stand open.

  37. They will never be shut, day or night,

  38. so that people may bring you the wealth of the nations.

  39. Their kings led in triumphal procession.

  40. For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish.

  41. It will be utterly ruined.

  42. The glory of Lebanon will come to you,

  43. the juniper, the fir, and the cypress together,

  44. to adorn my sanctuary.

  45. And I will glorify the place for my feet.

  46. The children of your oppressors will come bowing before you.

  47. All who despise you will bow down at your feet,

  48. and will call you the city of the Lord,

  49. Zion of the Holy One of Israel.

  50. Although you have been forsaken and hated,

  51. with no one traveling through,

  52. I will make you the everlasting pride and joy of all generations.

  53. You will drink the milk of nations,

  54. and be nursed at royal breasts.

  55. Then you will know that I, the Lord,

  56. am your Savior, your Redeemer,

  57. the Mighty One of Jacob.

  58. The grass withers and the flowers fade,

  59. but the word of our God stands forever.

  60. A reading from the Gospel according to John.

  61. John.

  62. The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.

  63. We have seen his glory,

  64. the glory of the one and only Son,

  65. who came from the Father,

  66. full of grace and truth.

  67. John testified concerning him.

  68. He cried out, saying,

  69. This is the one I spoke about when I said,

  70. He who comes after me has surpassed me,

  71. because he was before me.

  72. Out of his fullness,

  73. we have all received grace,

  74. in place of grace already given.

  75. For the law was given through Moses.

  76. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  77. No one has ever seen God,

  78. but the one and only Son,

  79. who is himself God,

  80. and is in closest relationship with the Father,

  81. has made him known.

  82. This is the Gospel of the Lord.

  83. Praise to you, O Christ.

  84. Good morning, Christ Church.

  85. We are about five days out from Christmas Eve,

  86. and some of us are thinking,

  87. hurry up,

  88. some of us are thinking,

  89. slow down.

  90. Our presents are beginning to pile up

  91. under the tree just a bit,

  92. and I've mentioned to you

  93. that the tree we got this year was huge,

  94. because I wanted to get my money's worth this year,

  95. so lots of girth.

  96. And, you know,

  97. I kind of feel dumb with our tree,

  98. especially with the job of putting the lights on.

  99. That's typically Catherine's job,

  100. because it's a geometry problem

  101. that's way beyond my competency.

  102. I'm not really qualified for this eight-foot cone,

  103. and, like, 40 feet of string,

  104. and the question is, you know,

  105. how many times do you bank it around that cone?

  106. And for me,

  107. I'm going, like, two-thirds of the way up

  108. and running out of lights.

  109. So, and once I'm not going back down,

  110. I'm not going to unwind.

  111. I'm just going to take what's left,

  112. string it straight to the top,

  113. and there's, like, one light at the top of the tree.

  114. So that's why that's Catherine's job.

  115. Although my way would be a nice way

  116. to share the Gospel, you know,

  117. here's all the light at the bottom of the tree.

  118. That's paradise.

  119. Here's all the darkness in the middle of the tree.

  120. That's paradise lost.

  121. And here's the one light at the top.

  122. That's Jesus Christ.

  123. He's the hope and the light of the world.

  124. Catherine has our tree.

  125. I want to start today by saying

  126. that light is the opposite of darkness.

  127. I know I just blew your minds,

  128. so I'm going to say it one more time.

  129. Light is the opposite of darkness.

  130. And the people of God receiving this text of Isaiah 60

  131. are a people who are living in darkness,

  132. people living in distress and gloom,

  133. sorrow and anguish and oppression.

  134. Because of the Babylonian invasion,

  135. the Babylonian exile,

  136. as we said before, they've had loved ones die.

  137. They've had their families ripped apart.

  138. They've had their homes torn down,

  139. their city burned to ashes,

  140. their temple has been reduced to rubble.

  141. And they've been living as refugees

  142. in a foreign land for quite a long time.

  143. And perhaps you feel that you're living in darkness today.

  144. You look at your life and you wonder

  145. if God is present with you in any way.

  146. Maybe you feel like these people,

  147. like a smoldering wick that's about to burn out.

  148. All the color in your life has gone away.

  149. And all you can see is brokenness and bondage and suffering.

  150. And the image here with two words of Isaiah 60

  151. is sort of like a teenager that's asleep on a Saturday morning

  152. and they're in a dark room.

  153. It's just, they're dead to the world.

  154. And mom comes into that dark room

  155. and she throws back the curtains

  156. and light comes flooding in.

  157. And what does she say?

  158. She says, rise and shine.

  159. A new day has dawned.

  160. And of course, the teenager so appreciates

  161. the wisdom of his mother

  162. that he just bounces out of bed.

  163. But the message today from Isaiah 60

  164. is that God's light will draw all nations

  165. to know him as savior.

  166. That's the promise of Isaiah 60,

  167. that God's light will draw all nations

  168. to know him as savior.

  169. And I want us to think for a minute about God's,

  170. these two words that God speaks to his people,

  171. rise and shine.

  172. Verse one, arise and shine for your light has come

  173. and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

  174. See, darkness covers the earth

  175. and thick darkness is over the peoples,

  176. but the Lord rises upon you

  177. and his glory appears over you.

  178. God is likening himself to the sun,

  179. the sun that rises at dawn,

  180. the sun that breaks the darkness with light,

  181. the sun that scatters the night away.

  182. And how is it that God is the light of the world?

  183. Well, we know that the sun gives life

  184. and that if the sun were to go out,

  185. if it were just to never come back out again,

  186. we would all freeze to death, right?

  187. If the sun went down tonight

  188. and didn't come up tomorrow,

  189. all of our plants would begin to die

  190. and it would kill the food chain

  191. and we would be dead pretty soon.

  192. And so imagine a world with no sun.

  193. It's all darkness and death.

  194. And now imagine a world with no God,

  195. no one to give us life,

  196. no one to give us being and existence.

  197. The light of the sun is an image of life.

  198. But the light of the sun is also an image of the truth.

  199. We were locking up here on Sunday night

  200. after Lessons and Carols

  201. and Walter, our third child,

  202. began turning out the lights

  203. as I was moving around the sanctuary.

  204. So I started bumping into pews, right?

  205. Because without the light,

  206. I didn't know the truth about where I was

  207. and what was in front of me

  208. and where I was going.

  209. And it's similar with us.

  210. Without the light of God's truth,

  211. we get hurt.

  212. We feel pain.

  213. This is why the psalmist says in Psalm 36,

  214. in your light, we see light.

  215. The sun is not an object that you look at.

  216. It's the way that you see everything else.

  217. If you look directly at the sun,

  218. you're going to burn your eyes out.

  219. But if you look,

  220. but you look at everything else

  221. by the light of the sun.

  222. And God says,

  223. I'm going to shine my light on you.

  224. And when I shine my light on you,

  225. I'm not only going to give you life,

  226. I'm going to pour out all of my knowledge

  227. and my wisdom and my truth on you.

  228. Light is life-giving.

  229. Light is truth-revealing.

  230. And light also is joy-producing.

  231. Why do we post all of our sunset

  232. and sunrise pictures on social media?

  233. Right?

  234. Why do we go in search of these things?

  235. Why do I go out on these dark days of December

  236. and look for that one sunny spot

  237. on those steps over there

  238. and on the steps out front of the church

  239. to read my book for 15 minutes?

  240. Because it makes me feel good.

  241. Because we're searching for beauty.

  242. We're searching for joy.

  243. We're searching for something to gladden our heart.

  244. And God is reassuring his people

  245. that sit in the deep darkness

  246. of the Babylonian exile

  247. and their return

  248. and all their collective despondency

  249. and their individual depression.

  250. He says to them,

  251. I'm going to shine on you like the rising sun.

  252. And my light is going to give you life

  253. and truth and joy.

  254. Notice the double imperative

  255. that God says to his people.

  256. He says, in light of that,

  257. rise and shine.

  258. Rise and shine.

  259. Get up, my people,

  260. and glow in the dark.

  261. Why?

  262. Because, verse one,

  263. the glory of the Lord rises upon you.

  264. The light of my eternal glory

  265. is going to shine on you.

  266. And because of that, verse three,

  267. nations will come to your light

  268. and kings to the brightness of your dawn.

  269. Because my light

  270. and my glory

  271. is flooding you,

  272. the people,

  273. you are going to shine

  274. with brightness

  275. and radiance

  276. and brilliance

  277. and glory

  278. and beauty.

  279. And when you do,

  280. you're going to have this magnetic

  281. drawing power

  282. that's going to cause the world

  283. to run to you

  284. to get the life,

  285. to get the truth,

  286. to get the joy

  287. that the light of my glory

  288. brings.

  289. One of the most audacious claims

  290. that Jesus makes

  291. in the Gospels

  292. is he says,

  293. I am the light of the world.

  294. But I think what's even more audacious

  295. than that

  296. is in the Sermon on the Mount,

  297. Jesus turns to his disciples

  298. and he says,

  299. you are the light of the world.

  300. And the Apostle Paul

  301. says this in Ephesians 5,

  302. he says,

  303. for you were once darkness

  304. but now you are light

  305. in the Lord,

  306. live as children

  307. of the light.

  308. And I just want to encourage us

  309. as we think about

  310. the light of God

  311. shining like the sun

  312. that we would start our days

  313. over these stressful days

  314. of the holidays

  315. as the sun is coming up

  316. that we would begin our days

  317. with 10 minutes

  318. or 15 or 20 minutes

  319. just letting the objective reality

  320. of God's light

  321. come flooding in

  322. and become the subjective experience

  323. of our lives.

  324. That we would allow

  325. God's light

  326. to dawn upon our souls.

  327. That we would allow

  328. the light of God's word

  329. and God's spirit

  330. to flood us

  331. on the inside

  332. and illumine us

  333. from the inside out

  334. that his life coming in

  335. would give us his life

  336. and his truth

  337. and his joy

  338. and when it does that

  339. it will make us

  340. a radiant

  341. and an attractive people

  342. that Isaiah says

  343. will glow in the dark.

  344. We will arise

  345. and shine.

  346. You with me so far?

  347. God's light.

  348. What a beautiful image.

  349. God's light

  350. it says

  351. will draw all

  352. the nations.

  353. God's light

  354. will draw

  355. all the nations.

  356. How many

  357. nations or cultures

  358. do you think

  359. are represented

  360. here at Christ Church

  361. this morning?

  362. You can look around

  363. take a guess.

  364. How many nations?

  365. How many cultures?

  366. I can't even begin

  367. to parse

  368. the complexities

  369. of just this little room

  370. of people

  371. but I think

  372. that's directly tied

  373. to Isaiah 60

  374. this vision

  375. of the city of God

  376. this picture

  377. of Jerusalem

  378. renewed

  379. this image

  380. of Zion

  381. exalted

  382. and it shows us

  383. this text

  384. shows us

  385. what it means

  386. when the Lord's prayer

  387. is answered.

  388. When the kingdom

  389. of God

  390. comes on the earth

  391. as it is in heaven

  392. Isaiah 60 says

  393. when it does

  394. all the nations

  395. and all their kings

  396. will come

  397. to live and worship

  398. in the city of God

  399. and when they do

  400. enemies will be reconciled

  401. war will be over

  402. there will be no more

  403. ethnic divisions

  404. everyone will live together

  405. in unity

  406. and peace

  407. it's a vision

  408. of the city of God

  409. as a place

  410. of spiritual

  411. brightness

  412. and illumination

  413. where the light

  414. of God's glory

  415. is drawing

  416. the nations together

  417. for their healing

  418. and in verse 5

  419. it says

  420. then you will look

  421. and be radiant

  422. your heart will throb

  423. and swell

  424. with joy

  425. why is this

  426. such a thrilling

  427. and exciting

  428. vision

  429. because it's a city

  430. that no human

  431. efforts

  432. at urbanization

  433. have yet been able

  434. to produce

  435. it's a city

  436. that's built

  437. by God

  438. and what is the first

  439. thing that God does

  440. for this city

  441. of Zion

  442. we're told in verse 4

  443. it says

  444. lift up your eyes

  445. and look about you

  446. all assemble

  447. and come to you

  448. your sons come

  449. from afar

  450. and your daughters

  451. are carried

  452. on the hip

  453. the last of the scattered

  454. and exiled

  455. children of Abraham

  456. are going to be

  457. willingly

  458. and gently brought

  459. from all parts

  460. of the world

  461. north, south, east, and west

  462. the people of God

  463. are all going to come

  464. and be at home

  465. and be at rest

  466. with their God

  467. but then it gets better

  468. it says

  469. in verse 5

  470. look and be radiant

  471. your heart will throb

  472. and swell with joy

  473. why?

  474. because the wealth

  475. on the seas

  476. will be brought

  477. to you

  478. to you

  479. the riches

  480. of the nations

  481. will come

  482. surprisingly

  483. all the Gentile nations

  484. will stream

  485. to Zion's light

  486. they're going to be

  487. like moss

  488. to the flame

  489. of God's glory

  490. and it's this great image

  491. of a caravan

  492. of nations

  493. all coming

  494. to this

  495. one city

  496. and as they come

  497. they're carrying

  498. Zion's exiles home

  499. but when they arrive

  500. what do they do?

  501. they bring all

  502. of their wealth

  503. all the abundance

  504. of the nations

  505. all the finest

  506. that they have

  507. and they give it

  508. to God

  509. I love verse 11

  510. it says

  511. your gates

  512. will always stand open

  513. they will never be shut

  514. day or night

  515. so that people

  516. may bring you

  517. the wealth

  518. of the nations

  519. the gates

  520. of the city

  521. are open

  522. 24-7

  523. because the wealth

  524. of the nations

  525. is being continually

  526. hauled

  527. through those gates

  528. in a constant

  529. unending influx

  530. of accumulated

  531. foreign goods

  532. to transform

  533. and to glorify

  534. the city

  535. of God

  536. you guys with me

  537. so far?

  538. can you mind

  539. if I just nerd out

  540. for a second

  541. on this text?

  542. I went to seminary

  543. for three years

  544. so it's got to be

  545. worth something

  546. okay?

  547. when you hear

  548. these places

  549. Midian

  550. Ifa

  551. Sheba

  552. Kedar

  553. Nebeo

  554. Tarshish

  555. Lebanon

  556. what does that

  557. mean to us?

  558. it means nothing

  559. to us

  560. but these were

  561. the seven most

  562. important trading

  563. centers of the

  564. ancient world

  565. New York

  566. London

  567. Shanghai

  568. Hong Kong

  569. Tokyo

  570. Singapore

  571. Frankfurt

  572. this is where

  573. it's at

  574. and this is where

  575. it's all coming

  576. from

  577. and I want to

  578. explain to you

  579. the camels

  580. and the ships

  581. that are coming

  582. from these trading

  583. centers

  584. in verse 6

  585. the herds of

  586. camels will

  587. cover your land

  588. young camels

  589. of Midian

  590. and Ephah

  591. and all from

  592. Sheba will come

  593. bearing gold

  594. and incense

  595. we'll come back

  596. to that in a second

  597. and proclaiming

  598. the praise

  599. of the Lord

  600. these camel trains

  601. were the ships

  602. of the desert

  603. that came from

  604. the east

  605. from Arabia

  606. and they were

  607. symbols of great

  608. economic power

  609. and mobility

  610. and they came

  611. bringing what?

  612. gold

  613. and incense

  614. and then in

  615. verse 9

  616. we're told

  617. that surely

  618. the islands

  619. look to me

  620. in the lead

  621. are the ships

  622. of Tarshish

  623. bringing your

  624. children from

  625. afar

  626. and with their

  627. silver and gold

  628. to the honor

  629. of the Lord

  630. your God

  631. the Holy One

  632. of Israel

  633. for he has

  634. endowed you

  635. with splendor

  636. just as these

  637. camels come

  638. from the east

  639. from Arabia

  640. so these ships

  641. of Tarshish

  642. come from the west

  643. from Spain

  644. and they're these

  645. impressive

  646. vessels of transport

  647. that bring people

  648. and silver

  649. and gold

  650. through the whole

  651. Mediterranean world

  652. and it's this image

  653. of busy ports

  654. endless loading

  655. docks

  656. crowded scales

  657. agents hurrying

  658. and scuttling about

  659. shipping

  660. and receiving

  661. it's an image

  662. of exotic

  663. cultural products

  664. in enormous

  665. commercial wealth

  666. coming flooding

  667. and pouring

  668. into the city

  669. of God

  670. and remember

  671. who's hearing

  672. this vision

  673. it's people

  674. maybe like you

  675. who've given up

  676. hope

  677. that any sort

  678. of quality

  679. of life

  680. is possible

  681. for them

  682. anymore

  683. these are people

  684. who lack

  685. sufficient materials

  686. to rebuild

  687. the temple

  688. of God

  689. these are a people

  690. for as long

  691. as they can remember

  692. the people of God

  693. have been paying

  694. imperial tribute

  695. to other nations

  696. to Assyria

  697. to Babylon

  698. to the Persians

  699. and now here

  700. all the goods

  701. that have been

  702. flowing out

  703. from the people

  704. of God

  705. are somehow

  706. miraculously

  707. dramatically

  708. reversed

  709. and flowing

  710. back in

  711. the light

  712. of the glory

  713. of God

  714. is so filling

  715. the people

  716. of God

  717. that they glow

  718. in the dark

  719. and they draw

  720. all these nations

  721. to bring with them

  722. their wealth

  723. so that the camels

  724. of Midian

  725. why are they coming

  726. in verse 6

  727. they're coming

  728. to proclaim

  729. the praise

  730. of the Lord

  731. these ships

  732. of Tarshish

  733. in verse 9

  734. why are they coming

  735. they're coming

  736. to honor the Lord

  737. the Holy One

  738. of Israel

  739. all the technological

  740. and cultural

  741. and military

  742. and commercial goods

  743. that once were signs

  744. of pagan power

  745. are here in this moment

  746. being cleansed

  747. of all their prideful

  748. and idolatrous functions

  749. to serve a very different

  750. purpose

  751. all the camels

  752. of Arabia

  753. all the ships

  754. of Tarshish

  755. are coming

  756. from the east

  757. and coming

  758. from the west

  759. why

  760. for the glory

  761. of God

  762. why

  763. all of this

  764. luxury

  765. and extravagance

  766. and prosperity

  767. and generosity

  768. this vision

  769. tells us

  770. that just as

  771. the kings

  772. and queens

  773. brought tribute

  774. to Solomon

  775. so he could build

  776. Yahweh's first temple

  777. now he's doing it again

  778. but this time

  779. bigger

  780. and better

  781. you see all these

  782. this gold

  783. in verse 6

  784. from Sheba

  785. is going to beautify

  786. the house of the Lord

  787. and all that incense

  788. is going to make

  789. for a fragrant

  790. sweet smelling

  791. worship to God

  792. and these flocks

  793. from Kedar

  794. in verse 7

  795. these are going to become

  796. costly sacrifices

  797. on the altar

  798. of the Lord

  799. to adorn

  800. his glorious temple

  801. with his merciful

  802. substitutionary

  803. atonement

  804. in verse 13

  805. the timber

  806. from Lebanon

  807. is going to come

  808. and strengthen

  809. and adorn

  810. the Lord's sanctuary

  811. and glorify

  812. the place

  813. it says

  814. where his feet

  815. mysteriously

  816. walk

  817. among us

  818. mortals

  819. and verse 10

  820. is shocking

  821. the nations

  822. and the kings

  823. are not only

  824. going to provide

  825. the raw materials

  826. but they themselves

  827. are going to roll up

  828. their sleeves

  829. and get their hands

  830. dirty

  831. as they

  832. begin to build

  833. the house

  834. of the Lord

  835. themselves

  836. you see

  837. this new city

  838. exists

  839. for something

  840. beyond itself

  841. and beyond

  842. its own

  843. pleasure

  844. and self

  845. actualization

  846. this is a place

  847. where every knee

  848. can come

  849. and bow

  850. and every tongue

  851. can come

  852. and confess

  853. that Yahweh

  854. the Holy One

  855. of Israel

  856. is the Savior

  857. and Redeemer

  858. of the whole world

  859. Isaiah 60

  860. reveals

  861. that the world's

  862. achievements

  863. and wealth

  864. and power

  865. are destined

  866. not for destruction

  867. but for transformation

  868. that each

  869. cultural artifact

  870. of every

  871. diverse

  872. and distinct

  873. people group

  874. will be put

  875. into the service

  876. of the glory

  877. of God

  878. this is a place

  879. for all nations

  880. and all cultures

  881. to come

  882. and surrender

  883. allegiance

  884. with extravagant

  885. generosity

  886. for the enhancing

  887. of God's worship

  888. for the building

  889. up of the house

  890. of the Holy One

  891. of Israel

  892. for the extending

  893. of His kingdom

  894. in every direction

  895. every culture

  896. is bringing

  897. their best

  898. to worship

  899. to worship

  900. the Lord

  901. and that's why

  902. friends

  903. that's why

  904. we come here

  905. every Sunday

  906. to bring

  907. our unique gifts

  908. to bring the best

  909. that we have

  910. to proclaim

  911. the praise

  912. of the Lord

  913. to put our

  914. sacrificial offerings

  915. on His altar

  916. and to adorn

  917. and beautify

  918. the glorious temple

  919. of His diverse

  920. global

  921. multicultural

  922. international

  923. church

  924. amen

  925. God's light

  926. we're told

  927. is going to draw

  928. all the nations

  929. arise and shine

  930. glow in the dark

  931. my people

  932. because I want to draw

  933. all the nations

  934. to myself

  935. why

  936. God's light

  937. will draw

  938. all nations

  939. to know Him

  940. as the Savior

  941. to know Him

  942. as the Savior

  943. it's December 19th

  944. so some of you

  945. may be wondering

  946. okay this is great

  947. but what does all this

  948. have to do with Christmas

  949. I want to draw

  950. your attention

  951. back to verse 6

  952. where it says

  953. herds of camels

  954. will come

  955. from Midian

  956. Ephah

  957. and Sheba

  958. and they're going to come

  959. bearing gold

  960. and incense

  961. and proclaiming

  962. the praise

  963. of the Lord

  964. and also verse 14

  965. where it says

  966. the children of your oppressors

  967. will come bowing before you

  968. all who despise you

  969. will bow down

  970. at your feet

  971. and then in verse 16

  972. then you will know

  973. that I am the Lord

  974. I the Lord

  975. am your Savior

  976. your Redeemer

  977. the Mighty One

  978. of Jacob

  979. the question with these

  980. prophetic texts

  981. is always

  982. when

  983. and where

  984. and how

  985. is this going to happen

  986. and the Gospels tell us

  987. the Gospel of Matthew

  988. tells us

  989. that these wise kings

  990. from the east

  991. from Arabia

  992. they came on camels

  993. to the city

  994. of Zion

  995. and they asked

  996. where is the one

  997. born king of the Jews

  998. and when they finally

  999. found him

  1000. they saw the child

  1001. and were told

  1002. in the Gospels

  1003. that they bowed down

  1004. and they worshipped him

1005. and what did they do

  1006. they opened their treasures

  1007. to him

1008. and what were the gifts

  1009. of those Gentile kings

  1010. presented to him

  1011. gold

  1012. incense

  1013. and myrrh

  1014. kids you can come

  1015. study our little

  1016. nativity set

  1017. here from Rwanda

  1018. to see these gifts

  1019. that these kings

  1020. have brought

  1021. to Jesus

  1022. and why do they

  1023. give these gifts

  1024. to him

  1025. is it because

  1026. he's such a cute baby

  1027. these are wise kings

  1028. who've been seeking

  1029. the mystery

  1030. and meaning

  1031. of the cosmos

  1032. all their lives

  1033. these are men

  1034. who plumb the depths

  1035. of the wisdom

  1036. that history

  1037. and religion

  1038. and philosophy

  1039. has to offer

  1040. and at the end

  1041. of all their searching

  1042. they find themselves

  1043. drawn to this reality

  1044. from John chapter 1

    John 1:14

  1045. verse 14

  1046. the word became flesh

  1047. and made his dwelling

  1048. among us

1049. we have seen his glory

1050. the glory of the only son

1051. who came from the father

  1052. full of grace

  1053. and truth

  1054. why do these kings

  1055. from the east

  1056. bow down

  1057. why do they worship

  1058. why do they

  1059. pour out their treasures

1060. because here is the word

  1061. the logos of God

  1062. the logic of God

  1063. the deep inner wisdom

  1064. that made the worlds

1065. the logic that is beyond

  1066. all human logic

1067. and that logic of God

  1068. has been made flesh

1069. in a real historical person

  1070. the divine

  1071. preexistent

  1072. eternal

  1073. all creating

  1074. lord of nature

  1075. and of history

  1076. has become human

  1077. what mattered

  1078. has become matter

  1079. what gives meaning

  1080. is now material

1081. and the life of the universe

  1082. is embodied

  1083. in this vulnerable

  1084. child

1085. so that when they see

  1086. his face

  1087. they see the face

  1088. of God

  1089. and when they look

  1090. in his eyes

  1091. God is looking back

  1092. at them

  1093. and when they speak

1094. the name of this one

1095. who's born from the womb

  1096. of Mary

1097. and birthed in a cave

  1098. in Bethlehem

1099. they're calling on the name

  1100. of almighty God

  1101. the word

  1102. became flesh

  1103. he made his dwelling

  1104. among us

  1105. literally

  1106. it says

  1107. the word became flesh

  1108. and he tabernacled

  1109. among us

  1110. he became a temple

  1111. in our midst

  1112. so that these words

  1113. of Isaiah 60

  1114. about all the nations

  1115. streaming

  1116. to worship

  1117. at the house

  1118. of the Lord

  1119. John 1

  1120. tells us

  1121. that this child

  1122. is that point

  1123. of intersection

  1124. between the timeless

  1125. and time

  1126. between heaven

  1127. and earth

  1128. between humanity

  1129. and divinity

  1130. here the light

  1131. of the glory

  1132. of God

  1133. shines

  1134. and draws

  1135. these wise kings

  1136. from the east

  1137. they thought

  1138. to themselves

  1139. we have gone

  1140. to extraordinary

  1141. lengths

  1142. to get to this

  1143. cradle

  1144. but when they get

  1145. there

  1146. they only realize

  1147. that God

  1148. has gone to

  1149. extravagant lengths

  1150. to get into

  1151. a personal

  1152. relationship

  1153. with each

  1154. one

  1155. of them

  1156. and when these

  1157. kings see

  1158. in Jesus

  1159. this God

  1160. who is full

  1161. of grace

  1162. and truth

  1163. this God

  1164. who is full

  1165. of love

  1166. and faithfulness

  1167. what do they do

  1168. they bow down

  1169. and they worship

  1170. him

  1171. and they pour

  1172. out the best

  1173. that their culture

  1174. has

  1175. to offer

  1176. if you got

  1177. on a plane

  1178. today

  1179. and you

  1180. flew

  1181. to Israel

  1182. and you

  1183. went to

  1184. the church

  1185. of the nativity

  1186. in Bethlehem

  1187. the site

  1188. of Jesus

  1189. birth

  1190. you would

  1191. find that

  1192. the door

  1193. of that church

  1194. is so small

  1195. and so low

  1196. that you're

  1197. literally forced

  1198. to stoop down

  1199. if you want

  1200. to enter into it

  1201. it's one of my

  1202. favorite churches

  1203. in the whole world

  1204. you have to bow

  1205. down

  1206. to go inside

  1207. and once you're

  1208. in there

  1209. if you want

  1210. to go

  1211. to the cave

  1212. where Jesus

  1213. was born

  1214. you have to

  1215. walk down

  1216. these steps

  1217. and you have

  1218. to bend

  1219. your head

  1220. low

  1221. to get down

  1222. there

  1223. and then many

  1224. people once

  1225. they get down

  1226. to that level

  1227. they bow down

  1228. on the ground

  1229. so that they

  1230. can touch

  1231. the rocks

  1232. of that cave

  1233. and some people

  1234. just kiss

  1235. the dirt

  1236. that's in there

  1237. and you might

  1238. think well

  1239. what's up

  1240. with all this

  1241. stooping

  1242. and bending

  1243. and bowing

  1244. well when Isaiah

  1245. says in verse 16

  1246. then you will know

  1247. that I

  1248. the Lord

  1249. your Savior

  1250. your Redeemer

  1251. the Mighty One

  1252. of you

  1253. no one could

  1254. have imagined

  1255. that God

  1256. was going to

  1257. empty himself

  1258. of all of his

  1259. glory

  1260. and stoop down

  1261. as low as a

  1262. tiny crying

  1263. baby in a

  1264. manger

  1265. to be our

  1266. Savior

  1267. no one

  1268. could fathom

  1269. that God

  1270. would bend

  1271. as low as

  1272. a man

  1273. of sorrows

  1274. and a friend

  1275. of sinners

  1276. to become

  1277. our Redeemer

  1278. no one

  1279. could even

  1280. conjure up

  1281. this image

  1282. of the Mighty

  1283. One of Jacob

  1284. bowing down

  1285. as low as a

  1286. slave

  1287. to wash

  1288. our feet

  1289. no one

  1290. could have

  1291. possibly come up

  1292. with the idea

  1293. that God

  1294. became like us

  1295. so that he could

  1296. stretch out his arms

  1297. to give us

  1298. a hug

  1299. and absolutely

  1300. no one

  1301. would have

  1302. ever

  1303. ever imagined

  1304. that that God

  1305. on Good Friday

  1306. would stretch out

  1307. those arms

  1308. on his cross

  1309. and that the light

  1310. of the world

1311. the light of the glory

  1312. of God

  1313. would be plunged

  1314. into the darkness

  1315. to bear the weight

  1316. of our guilt

  1317. and shame

  1318. to pay the debt

  1319. of our selfishness

  1320. and sin

  1321. and to die

  1322. the death

  1323. that we deserve

  1324. to die

  1325. and you see

  1326. that's the reason

  1327. we stoop

  1328. and we bend

  1329. and we bow

  1330. as Christians

  1331. because the Holy One

  1332. of Israel

  1333. stooped

  1334. and bent

  1335. and bowed

  1336. to become

  1337. our Savior

  1338. and to become

  1339. our Redeemer

  1340. and so Christ

  1341. Church

  1342. that's my prayer

  1343. for us

  1344. that we would

  1345. arise

  1346. and that we

  1347. would shine

  1348. that we would

  1349. glow in the dark

  1350. that God

  1351. would so shine

  1352. the light of his

  1353. glory on us

  1354. the glory of his

  1355. one and only son

  1356. that we would

  1357. become transfigured

  1358. into brilliant

  1359. illumined

  1360. radiant

  1361. beautiful

  1362. Christ-like

  1363. life-giving

  1364. truth-revealing

  1365. joy-producing

  1366. people

  1367. who in our

  1368. stooping

  1369. and our

  1370. bending

  1371. and our

  1372. bowing

  1373. before God

  1374. and before

  1375. other people

  1376. we would shine

  1377. the light of God's

  1378. glory into this

  1379. world

  1380. that we would

  1381. shine the light

  1382. of God's glory

  1383. into the city

  1384. where every

  1385. people and tribe

  1386. and nation

  1387. and tongue

  1388. could be drawn

  1389. to this

  1390. stooping

  1391. bending

  1392. and bowing

  1393. Savior

  1394. whose light

  1395. shines in the

  1396. darkness

  1397. and the darkness

  1398. has not

  1399. overcome it

  1400. this is my

  1401. prayer

  1402. in the name

  1403. of the Father

  1404. Son and Holy

  1405. Spirit

  1406. Amen
