  4. Good morning. My name is Catherine St. Clair.

  5. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel according to John 2, verses 1-11, as found in your liturgy.

    John 2:1–11

  6. On the third day, a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee.

  7. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding.

  8. When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him,

  9. They have no more wine.

  10. Woman, why do you involve me? Jesus replied.

  11. My hour has not yet come.

  12. His mother said to the servants,

  13. Do whatever he tells you.

  14. Nearby stood six stone water jars,

  15. the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing,

  16. each holding from twenty to thirty gallons.

  17. Jesus said to the servants,

  18. Fill the jars with water.

  19. So they filled them to the brim.

  20. Then he told them,

  21. Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet.

  22. They did so,

  23. and the master of the banquet tasted the water

  24. that had been turned into wine.

  25. He did not realize where it had come from,

  26. though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

  27. Then he called the bridegroom aside and said,

  28. Everyone brings out the choice wine first,

  29. and then the cheaper wine,

  30. after the guests have had too much to drink.

  31. But you have saved the best till now.

  32. What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee

  33. was the first of the signs

  34. through which he revealed his glory,

  35. and his disciples believed in him.

  36. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  37. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

  38. Hello.

  39. Good morning, Christchurch family.

  40. Happy New Year.

  41. Happy 2022.

  42. For those of you here for the first time,

  43. normally you'd find Pastor Jonathan

  44. or Pastor Andrew up here preaching,

  45. but today you've got me.

  46. My name is Jesse,

  47. and I work in the church office.

  48. I'm here because a few months ago,

  49. Pastor Andrew asked if I'd like to preach

  50. on December 26th,

  51. which was last Sunday,

  52. or today, January 2nd,

  53. and I picked today because I thought

  54. it would give me an additional week of preparation.

  55. But it just turned out

  56. I had an additional week of procrastination.

  57. So today is not only the first Sunday of the new year,

  58. but it's also my first time preaching here at Christchurch.

  59. I've preached at some other churches.

  60. I've preached a few times before,

  61. but it's my first time preaching here,

  62. and depending on how things go

  63. in the next 30 minutes or so,

  64. we'll see if it might also be my last time preaching here.

  65. So today's sermon text is John 2, verses 1 through 11,

    John 2:1–11

  66. where we see Jesus performing his first sign,

  67. turning water into wine.

  68. And even though turning water into wine

  69. is a miracle,

  70. it's miraculous,

  71. John, the author of this gospel,

  72. calls it a sign.

  73. And why is this a sign?

  74. Why is it something that's more than a miracle?

  75. So for two reasons.

  76. One, it is a foretaste of the age to come.

  77. And two, it is a glimpse of God's glory.

  78. A foretaste of the age to come

  79. and a glimpse of God's glory.

  80. We'll also talk about the significance

  81. of this sign happening at a wedding.

  82. And we'll talk about the significance of wine.

  83. So the four keywords you can keep in your head

  84. as you're listening are foretaste,

  85. glimpse, wedding, and wine.

  86. All right, let's start our exploration

  87. of today's passage by going to the last verse,

  88. verse 11,

  89. where it says,

  90. What Jesus did here in Cana of Galilee

  91. was the first of the signs

  92. through which he revealed his glory.

  93. And his disciples believed in him.

  94. Now, what does it mean that this was a sign?

  95. To help explain this,

  96. I'll talk about a store that

  97. most of us know about

  98. and some of us might even love.

  99. This store is known for its bigness.

  100. The stores themselves are big

  101. and the items for sale in the store are big

  102. because they're sold in bulk.

  103. So what store do you think I'm talking about?

  104. Costco, yeah, you got it.

  105. Costco.

  106. Costco is known for being big, right?

  107. But Costco is also known for something small.

  108. And that thing that's small that Costco is known for

  109. are small samples, right?

  110. How many of you, when you go to Costco,

  111. try to get a few samples?

  112. Yeah, most of us.

  113. And

  114. turning the page here.

  115. In case you've never been to Costco,

  116. if you've never experienced the wonder of free samples,

  117. what it is is

  118. throughout the main aisles of the store

  119. or scattered in the main aisles of the store

  120. are these stations

  121. where there's a Costco employee

  122. kind of giving out free bite-sized pieces

  123. of some type of food item that's for sale

  124. at that store.

  125. And

  126. so for example,

  127. let's say they're selling frozen ravioli at Costco.

  128. So if there's a sample of this ravioli,

  129. there'll be an employee who's heating up the ravioli

  130. and then kind of apportioning it out

  131. into little bite-sized pieces.

  132. Now,

  133. you might be wondering,

  134. what does ravioli have to do with the Bible?

  135. Well,

  136. I'm going to ask you a question,

  137. which is,

  138. what is the purpose of a sample of ravioli?

  139. The purpose,

  140. what is the purpose of a sample?

  141. The purpose of a sample

  142. is to give you a taste of a larger item

  143. and to point you towards it, right?

  144. A sample is supposed to give you a taste of the item

  145. and point you towards it.

  146. The same for a sign.

  147. Another example of a sign is

  148. if you drove here today

  149. and you took the freeway,

  150. you might have seen a sign on the freeway

  151. that says University Avenue

  152. or Telegraph Avenue, right?

  153. And that sign is not the road in itself, right?

  154. The sign that says University Avenue

  155. isn't University Avenue.

  156. It's meant to point you towards it.

  157. So, in the same way,

  158. in the Bible,

  159. when we see something that Jesus has done,

  160. called a sign,

  161. it's supposed to give us a taste of something larger

  162. and to point us toward a larger reality.

  163. Also, if you look at verse 11,

  164. it says,

  165. the first of the signs.

  166. What's kind of interesting is that the Greek word

  167. that we translate here as first,

  168. it's the Greek word archa,

  169. which can also be translated as beginning.

  170. So, you could also translate this as

  171. the beginning of the signs.

  172. And the word archa is a pretty important word in the Bible.

  173. At the beginning,

  174. at the opening of the Gospel of John,

  175. at the opening of the Greek translation

  176. of the book of Genesis,

  177. how do those two books begin?

  178. They begin the same way, right?

  179. In the beginning.

  180. And in Greek,

  181. that term is N-R-K.

  182. So, by calling this

  183. the beginning of the signs,

  184. we have kind of a connection

  185. that connects us to creation,

  186. that connects us,

  187. that kind of lets us see that

  188. it's a hint that Jesus

  189. is the creator God.

  190. Jesus is God.

  191. The same God who created at the beginning,

  192. the same God who is preexistent and eternal.

  193. Now, the miracle itself,

  194. the sign,

  195. turning water into wine,

  196. also connects us to God's creation

  197. in Genesis 1,

  198. where God creates the universe

  199. out of nothing.

  200. And this doctrine of God creating out of nothing

  201. has a Latin phrase,

  202. has a Latin name for it.

  203. Does anyone know it?

  204. Yeah, some of you are nodding.

  205. Yeah, creatio ex nihilo.

  206. Pardon my pronunciation.

  207. But I think it's pronounced creatio ex nihilo,

  208. which means creation out of nothing

  209. or creation from nothing.

  210. And there's an aspect of that

  211. to this miracle that Jesus does here,

  212. turning water into wine.

  213. What I mean is that

  214. some of the key and necessary ingredients

  215. that make wine,

  216. wine,

  217. are simply not present in water.

  218. or to look at it from another perspective,

  219. let's think about healing, right?

  220. We know Jesus healed people.

  221. With the human body,

  222. we know that if we give the body enough time,

  223. it kind of can naturally heal from many injuries.

  224. Not all of them,

  225. but the human body can heal.

  226. Or if you have a broken bone, right?

  227. I've actually had a fractured middle finger before

  228. from a motorcycle accident.

  229. And I know that if you just kind of put things back

  230. and give it enough time,

  231. the bone will heal.

  232. The human body can heal itself.

  233. But with this sign,

  234. with this miracle of Jesus turning water into wine,

  235. no matter how much time,

  236. no matter how much time you give it,

  237. no matter how long you wait,

  238. water will never become wine.

  239. The ingredients for wine simply are not present in water.

  240. Water doesn't have sugar

  241. that can be broken down by yeast

  242. to create alcohol.

  243. Water doesn't have pigment from grape skins

  244. to give wine its color.

  245. Water doesn't have the flavor compounds

  246. that make grape juice taste grapey

  247. and wine taste whiny.

  248. Should have revised that one.

  249. So without spending too much time on this topic,

  250. when Jesus turns water into wine,

  251. he is demonstrating some aspect of creatio ex nihilo.

  252. He's creating something out of nothing.

  253. He's demonstrating the power of God

  254. to create something out of nothing.

  255. So with this sign,

  256. which is more than a miracle,

  257. which is the beginning of his signs,

  258. Jesus is revealing to us that he is God.

  259. The same creator God

  260. who is preexistent, internal,

  261. who created the universe out of nothing.

  262. Now that we've established what a sign is,

  263. let's explore today's passage from the first verse.

  264. We'll look at the first two verses.

  265. Feel free to follow along in the Pew Bibles

  266. or on a Bible app,

  267. or in the liturgy.

  268. Verse one,

  269. What's the setting?

  270. The setting here is a wedding.

  271. And Jesus,

  272. his disciples,

  273. and his mother

  274. have all been invited.

  275. Although we don't know if Jesus

  276. was a friend of the married couple

  277. or their families,

  278. in that time and place,

  279. it was customary

  280. to invite

  281. the entire village

  282. to a wedding,

  283. and even people from neighboring villages.

  284. Jewish weddings

  285. often lasted for seven days

  286. and included music

  287. and dancing.

  288. The groom's family

  289. normally hosted the wedding

  290. and would try to invite

  291. as many people as possible,

  292. especially distinguished guests

  293. like a religious,

  294. like a well-known religious teacher.

  295. One commentary suggests

  296. that the host of this wedding

  297. was probably well-off

  298. because of the presence

  299. of servants

  300. at the banquet

  301. and the large amount of water

  302. in these stone jars.

  303. Six jars doesn't sound like

  304. a lot of water,

  305. but remember,

  306. each jar held between

  307. 20 and 30 gallons.

  308. So if you do some math,

  309. how much water in total is that?

  310. 120 to 180 gallons.

  311. So,

  312. you're probably expecting

  313. a lot of guests.

  314. Let's look at the next two verses,

  315. verses three and four.

  316. When the wine was gone,

  317. Jesus' mother said to him,

  318. they have no more wine.

  319. Woman, why do you involve me?

  320. Jesus replied,

  321. my hour has not yet come.

  322. If you feel surprised by this

  323. or find it hard to understand,

  324. you're not alone.

  325. Bible scholars

  326. and pastors also admitted

  327. that this passage,

  328. especially verse four,

  329. can be hard or perplexing

  330. for modern readers

  331. to understand.

  332. Actually, let's go back

  333. a little bit.

  334. Going back to this wedding.

  335. We see in verse three

  336. that the wedding

  337. has run out of wine, right?

  338. Jesus' mother says to Jesus,

  339. they have no more wine.

  340. Now, why is this a big deal?

  341. So, the Middle East,

  342. then and now,

  343. is a shame

  344. and honor

  345. culture.

  346. And the family

  347. is the fundamental

  348. unit of society.

  349. So, it's a little bit different

  350. than here in the West,

  351. where the individual

  352. is the fundamental

  353. unit of society.

  354. And although we do have

  355. some aspects of shame

  356. and culture,

  357. we're kind of relative

  358. to the Middle East

  359. or other Eastern cultures,

  360. we're kind of more of a

  361. guilt and innocence culture.

  362. So, shame and honor culture

  363. in the Middle East.

  364. To run out of wine

  365. at a wedding

  366. is to fail

  367. to be a good host.

  368. It's to fail

  369. to live up

  370. to that expectation

  371. of hospitality.

  372. So,

  373. to run out of wine

  374. at a wedding

  375. could bring

  376. lasting shame

  377. to the groom's family.

  378. So,

  379. that said,

  380. let's go back

  381. to verse 4,

  382. where Jesus says,

  383. Woman, why do you involve me?

  384. My hour

  385. has not yet come.

  386. So,

  387. Jesus says,

  388. Woman,

  389. and

  390. the Greek word

  391. used there

  392. is kind of equivalent

  393. to the English word

  394. ma'am.

  395. It's respectful,

  396. but it creates

  397. distance.

  398. Then,

  399. when Jesus says,

  400. why do you involve me?

  401. The Greek there

  402. is just four words,

  403. which if you translate

  404. word for word,

  405. says,

  406. what,

  407. me,

  408. and you.

  409. What,

  410. me,

  411. and you.

  412. And when you look at

  413. other occurrences

  414. of this phrase

  415. in the Greek version

  416. of the Old Testament,

  417. it creates

  418. distance

  419. between the speaker

  420. and the hearer.

  421. So,

  422. taken in total,

  423. Jesus is creating

  424. a distance

  425. between himself

  426. and his mother.

  427. And then,

  428. at the end of verse 4,

  429. Jesus says,

  430. My hour

  431. has not yet come.

  432. And what is he

  433. talking about here?

  434. Well,

  435. in the Gospels,

  436. when Jesus talks

  437. about his hour

  438. or the hour

  439. or my hour,

  440. he's referring

  441. to his crucifixion

  442. and the time

  443. and events

  444. surrounding it.

  445. So,

  446. his arrest,

  447. death,

  448. crucifixion,

  449. resurrection,

  450. and ascension.

  451. The word hour

  452. is spoken of this,

  453. in this way,

  454. in the Gospel of John

  455. seven more times

  456. and also

  457. in the other three Gospels,

  458. Matthew,

  459. Mark,

  460. and Luke.

  461. So,

  462. when Jesus says

  463. to his mother,

  464. my hour

  465. has not yet come,

  466. he is telling her

  467. that his primary task,

  468. his primary mission

  469. on earth,

  470. has not yet arrived.

  471. All the signs

  472. and miracles

  473. that he's done,

  474. those are important,

  475. but what is most important

  476. for us,

  477. for humanity,

  478. to be saved,

  479. what is most important

  480. for our relationship

  481. with God

  482. to be restored,

  483. was,

  484. one,

  485. Jesus' death

  486. on the cross

  487. as sinless

  488. and fully God

  489. and fully human,

  490. two,

  491. his resurrection,

  492. and three,

  493. his ascension.

  494. Putting all these ideas together,

  495. when Jesus says to Mary,

  496. woman,

  497. why do you involve me?

  498. My hour

  499. has not yet come.

  500. These words

  501. prepare us

  502. for what

  503. is about to happen.

  504. They prepare us

  505. for what

  506. Jesus is about to do.

  507. He's saying that

  508. he's not merely

  509. obeying

  510. his mother's request,

  511. but it's also

  512. not the fulfillment

  513. of his mission

  514. on earth.

  515. It's like we're talking

  516. about two ends

  517. of a spectrum.

  518. What Jesus is about

  519. to do at this wedding

  520. is not merely

  521. a small-scale

  522. act of salvation

  523. for this married couple

  524. and their families,

  525. but it's also

  526. not the cosmic-scale

  527. act of salvation,

  528. this history-changing

  529. act of salvation

  530. for humanity

  531. and creation.

  532. Jesus' hour

  533. had not yet come.

  534. Let's look at

  535. the next two verses,

  536. verses 5 and 6.

  537. His mother said

  538. to the servants,

  539. do whatever

  540. he tells you.

  541. Nearby stood

  542. six stone jars,

  543. the kind used

  544. by the Jews

  545. for ceremonial washing,

  546. each holding

  547. from 20 to 30 gallons.

  548. Let's talk about

  549. the stone jars here.

  550. The text says

  551. that they're used

  552. for ceremonial washing,

  553. and we see

  554. some more information

  555. about that

  556. in the Gospel of Mark,

    Mark 7:3

  557. chapter 7,

  558. verse 3.

  559. The Pharisees

  560. and all the Jews

  561. do not eat

  562. unless they give

  563. their hands

  564. a ceremonial washing,

  565. holding to the tradition

  566. of the elders.

  567. The ritual

  568. involved here,

  569. here involved

  570. servants

  571. pouring water,

  572. taking water

  573. out of these stone jars

  574. and pouring it

  575. over the hands

  576. of guests.

  577. spirits.

  578. And there is

  579. some significance

  580. to these stone jars

  581. that we should

  582. discuss further.

  583. The ceremonial washing

  584. done using

  585. these stone jars

  586. was part of a larger

  587. system in Judaism

  588. of ceremonies,

  589. sacrifices,

  590. and rules.

  591. These rules

  592. included rules

  593. on what people

  594. could or could not eat.

  595. And elsewhere

  596. in the New Testament,

  597. in Hebrews,

  598. this is written

  599. after the

  600. death,

  601. resurrection,

  602. ascension of Jesus.

  603. Probably written

  604. around 68 AD.

  605. And it's written

  606. to Christians

  607. who came from

  608. Jewish backgrounds.

  609. Hebrews,

    Hebrews 9:10

  610. chapter 9,

  611. verse 10,

  612. says,

  613. speaking of these

  614. rules and laws,

  615. they are only

  616. a matter of food

  617. and drink

  618. and various

  619. ceremonial washings,

  620. external regulations

  621. applying until the

  622. time of the new

  623. order.

  624. And then going

  625. on a few more

  626. verses to chapter 10

  627. in Hebrews,

  628. verses 1 and 2,

  629. it says that the law

  630. is only a shadow

  631. of the good things

  632. that are coming,

  633. not the reality

  634. themselves.

  635. For this reason,

  636. it can never,

  637. by the same sacrifices

  638. repeated endlessly

  639. year after year,

  640. make perfect

  641. those who draw

  642. near to worship.

  643. Otherwise,

  644. would they not

  645. have stopped

  646. being offered?

  647. For the worshipers

  648. would have been

  649. cleansed once for all

  650. and would no longer

  651. have felt guilty

  652. for their sins.

  653. I mention these

  654. because

  655. the ceremonial

  656. washings

  657. were a reminder

  658. of people's need

  659. to be cleansed,

  660. washed of their sins.

  661. But they could never

  662. actually cleanse

  663. people from their sins.

  664. that required

  665. a Savior.

  666. And now we're

  667. starting to get at

  668. more of why

  669. Jesus' act of

  670. turning water

  671. into wine

  672. at this wedding

  673. was more than

  674. just a miracle.

  675. It gave the people

  676. at the wedding

  677. and gives us today

  678. a glimpse

  679. of who Jesus is

  680. and what he came

  681. to do.

  682. It shows us that

  683. Jesus is the

  684. promised Messiah

  685. who would fulfill

  686. Old Testament law

  687. and prophecy

  688. and give humanity

  689. true and lasting

  690. cleansing from sin.

  691. and that he would

  692. usher in

  693. the promised age

  694. to come

  695. when good wine

  696. would be abundant,

  697. when evil

  698. would be no more,

  699. and when God

  700. would be fully

  701. among his people.

  702. And we'll talk

  703. more about this

  704. later.

  705. Let's look at

  706. verses 7 through 9

  707. in today's passage,

  708. but we'll start again

  709. at verse 6.

  710. Nearby stood

  711. six stone jars,

  712. the kind used

  713. by the Jews

  714. for ceremonial washing,

  715. each holding

  716. from 20 to 30 gallons.

  717. Verse 7,

  718. Jesus said to the servants,

  719. Fill the jars

  720. with water.

  721. So they filled them

  722. to the brim.

  723. Then he told them,

  724. Now draw some out

  725. and take it

  726. to the master

  727. of the banquet.

  728. They did so,

  729. and the master

  730. of the banquet

  731. tasted the water

  732. that had been

  733. turned into wine.

  734. We'll stop there.

  735. All right,

  736. let's do some math there.

  737. Let's do some math here.

  738. We have six stone

  739. jars,

  740. each holding

  741. from 20 to 30 gallons.

  742. So in total,

  743. 120 to 180 gallons.

  744. And each jar

  745. was filled

  746. to the brim

  747. with water.

  748. And all of the water

  749. became wine.

  750. So how much wine

  751. are we talking

  752. about here?

  753. So here is

  754. a bottle of wine.

  755. It's empty.

  756. This is kind

  757. of a standard

  758. size bottle of wine.

  759. And who knows

  760. what's the volume

  761. of a standard

  762. bottle of wine?

  763. Yeah.

  764. 750 milliliters.

  765. So that's

  766. 0.75 liters,

  767. which will help us

  768. later on

  769. because we're going

  770. to do some math.

  771. So if you bottled

  772. all the wine

  773. that Jesus made

  774. at this wedding,

  775. how many bottles

  776. of wine would that be?

  777. Okay.

  778. Oh, I should have

  779. passed out some

  780. scratch paper and pencils,

  781. but no worries.

  782. I did the math

  783. for you already.

  784. So each jar

  785. held between

  786. 20 and 30 gallons.

  787. Let's pick the lower

  788. number, 20 gallons

  789. per jar.

  790. That's 120 gallons

  791. in total.

  792. How many liters

  793. is 120 gallons?

  794. The answer is

  795. 454 liters.

  796. Now, how many bottles

  797. of wine is 454 liters?

  798. So 454 divided

  799. by 0.75 equals 605.

  800. So that's 605 bottles

  801. of wine.

  802. That's the low end

  803. of this calculation.

  804. What about the high end,

  805. right?

  806. If each jar holds 30 gallons,

  807. that's 118 gallons.

  808. In total,

  809. 118 gallons is equal

  810. to how many liters?

  811. 681 liters.

  812. 681 liters.

  813. How many bottles

  814. of wine

  815. is 681 liters

  816. of wine?

  817. Okay.

  818. Crunch the numbers.

  819. 908 bottles

  820. of wine.

  821. So on the high end,

  822. Jesus created

  823. 908 bottles

  824. of wine.

  825. I mean,

  826. imagine what that

  827. would look like

  828. if we saw that.

  829. 900 bottles

  830. of wine.

  831. So I think

  832. this little math

  833. exercise helps us

  834. kind of sense

  835. how much wine

  836. Jesus produced.

  837. It was exceedingly abundant.

  838. So earlier,

  839. we talked about

  840. the significance

  841. of these stone water jars.

  842. And now we're going

  843. to talk about

  844. the significance

  845. of wine

  846. and the significance

  847. of this miracle

  848. occurring at a wedding.

  849. And when we consider

  850. all the meaning

  851. behind these things,

  852. we'll see that truly

  853. this was more

  854. than a miracle.

  855. It is a sign

  856. that gives us

  857. a foretaste

  858. of the age to come

  859. and a glimpse

  860. of God's glory.

  861. Wedding.

  862. Why is it significant

  863. that this sign

  864. occurred at a wedding?

  865. Jesus could have chosen

  866. another setting

  867. to display

  868. his first sign,

  869. the beginning

  870. of his signs,

  871. but he chose

  872. a wedding.

  873. wedding.

  874. And remember

  875. that a sign,

  876. I'll put this

  877. wine bottle down,

  878. remember that a sign

  879. is a foretaste

  880. of the age to come.

  881. And in several places

  882. in the Bible,

  883. in both the Old Testament

  884. and the New Testament,

  885. when Scripture

  886. speaks of the age

  887. to come,

  888. it often uses

  889. the language

  890. and imagery

  891. of wedding

  892. and marriage.

  893. For example,

  894. in the Old Testament

  895. in the book of Hosea,

  896. God commands

  897. the prophet Hosea

  898. to marry

  899. a woman

  900. that the text

  901. describes as a

  902. quote,

  903. promiscuous woman,

  904. unquote,

  905. so that their relationship,

  906. Hosea's

  907. and his wife's relationship,

  908. would be a visible

  909. illustration

  910. of how Israel

  911. was unfaithful

  912. to God

  913. and yet,

  914. despite Israel's

  915. unfaithfulness,

  916. God would be

  917. faithful and loving

  918. God would reconcile

  919. his people to himself

  920. and restore them

  921. and be with them

  922. forever.

  923. Also in the Old Testament

  924. in the book of Isaiah,

  925. we find more

  926. wedding

  927. and marriage-related

  928. language and imagery.

  929. Okay,

  930. if you go to

  931. Isaiah 54

    Isaiah 54:5–6

  932. verses 5 through 6,

  933. Isaiah 54

    Isaiah 54:5–6

  934. verses 5 through 6,

  935. it says,

  936. for your maker

  937. is your husband,

  938. the Lord Almighty

  939. is his name,

  940. the Holy One

  941. of Israel

  942. is your Redeemer,

  943. he is called

  944. the God

  945. of all the earth.

  946. The Lord

  947. will call you back

  948. as if you were

  949. a wife deserted

  950. and distressed

  951. in spirit.

  952. And then,

  953. a few chapters

  954. later,

  955. in Isaiah 62

    Isaiah 62:5

  956. verse 5,

  957. it says,

  958. as a young man

  959. marries a young woman,

  960. so will your builder

  961. marry you.

  962. As a bridegroom

  963. rejoices over his bride,

  964. so will your God

  965. rejoice over you.

  966. And moreover,

  967. in the Gospels,

  968. we see Jesus

  969. identified as the groom.

  970. In John chapter 3,

    John 3 chapter mention

  971. John the Baptist

  972. refers to Jesus

  973. as the bridegroom,

  974. and John the Baptist

  975. refers to himself

  976. as a friend

  977. of the bridegroom.

  978. In Mark chapter 2,

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  979. Jesus refers to himself

  980. kind of in an indirect way

  981. that he is

  982. the bridegroom.

  983. And we see

  984. from these verses

  985. throughout the Bible

  986. that God

  987. has promised

  988. that there will be

  989. a time in the future

  990. when God will

  991. fully be with his people

  992. as a groom

  993. is with his bride.

  994. And we see

  995. that Jesus

  996. is the groom

  997. who has inaugurated

  998. this restoration

  999. of relationship.

  1000. Now,

  1001. let's talk about

  1002. the significance

  1003. of wine.

  1004. Why is it important

  1005. that Jesus' first sign

  1006. involves wine?

  1007. First,

  1008. let's look at

  1009. what kind of wine

  1010. Jesus created.

  1011. John chapter 2,

    John 2:9

  1012. verse 9.

  1013. The master

  1014. of the banquet

  1015. tasted the water

  1016. that had been

  1017. turned into wine.

  1018. He did not realize

1019. where it had come from,

  1020. though the servants

  1021. who had drawn

  1022. the water knew.

  1023. Then he called

  1024. the bridegroom aside

  1025. and said,

  1026. everyone brings out

  1027. the choice wine first

1028. and then the cheaper wine

  1029. after the guests

  1030. have had too much

  1031. to drink.

  1032. But you have saved

  1033. the best till now.

  1034. What kind of wine

  1035. did Jesus make?

  1036. So,

  1037. we know that this

  1038. was a big wedding,

1039. it was a big event,

  1040. and they even had

1041. a master of the banquet,

  1042. a professional,

  1043. a professional

  1044. in food and drink.

  1045. And when he tastes

  1046. this wine,

  1047. he calls it

  1048. the best.

  1049. Right?

  1050. He mentions that

  1051. everyone brings out

  1052. the choice wine first

1053. and then the cheaper wine

  1054. after the guests

  1055. have had too much

  1056. to drink.

  1057. But you have saved

  1058. the best till now.

  1059. The words

  1060. in our English translation,

  1061. choice and best,

  1062. here in this verse,

  1063. are actually both

  1064. the same word

  1065. in Greek,

  1066. kalos.

  1067. And kalos

  1068. is where we get

  1069. the name kalista.

  1070. Kalos,

  1071. so I looked up

  1072. this word

  1073. in a Greek lexicon,

  1074. and it says that

  1075. the word kalos

  1076. was,

  1077. quote,

  1078. applied by the Greeks

  1079. to everything

  1080. so distinguished

  1081. in form,

  1082. excellence,

  1083. goodness,

  1084. usefulness,

  1085. as to be pleasing.

  1086. Hence,

  1087. according to the context,

  1088. equivalent to

  1089. beautiful,

  1090. handsome,

  1091. excellent,

  1092. eminent,

  1093. choice,

  1094. surpassing,

  1095. precious,

  1096. useful,

  1097. suitable,

  1098. commendable,

  1099. admirable,

  1100. unquote.

  1101. So the wine

  1102. that Jesus

  1103. has made

  1104. in exceeding abundance

  1105. is really,

  1106. really good wine.

  1107. It's beautiful,

  1108. excellent,

  1109. admirable.

  1110. Now,

  1111. more about wine.

  1112. In general,

  1113. what makes

  1114. good wine

  1115. even better?

  1116. Time,

  1117. age.

  1118. So what's

  1119. another,

  1120. what makes

  1121. this miracle

  1122. even more impressive

  1123. is that

  1124. Jesus has made

  1125. new wine,

  1126. but it tastes

  1127. really good,

  1128. as if it's

  1129. aged wine.

  1130. He's made

  1131. 900 bottles

  1132. of wine

  1133. that somehow

  1134. paradoxically

  1135. is both

  1136. new and aged.

  1137. Now,

  1138. to a Jewish

  1139. person of that

  1140. time and place

  1141. who was familiar

  1142. with Scripture,

  1143. when you talk

  1144. about wine

  1145. that's new

  1146. and aged,

  1147. very,

  1148. very good,

  1149. and in

  1150. exceeding abundance,

  1151. what would

  1152. that person

  1153. think of?

  1154. They would

  1155. have remembered

  1156. Old Testament

  1157. Scriptures

  1158. that talked

  1159. about this

  1160. kind of wine.

  1161. They would

  1162. have remembered,

  1163. for example,

  1164. Amos 9

  1165. and Isaiah

  1166. 25.

  1167. So Amos 9

    Amos 9:13–15

  1168. verses 13

  1169. through 15

  1170. say,

  1171. The days are

  1172. coming,

  1173. declares the

  1174. Lord,

  1175. when the

  1176. reaper will

  1177. be overtaken

  1178. by the

  1179. plowman

  1180. and the

  1181. planter by

  1182. the one

  1183. treading

  1184. grapes.

  1185. New wine

  1186. will drip

  1187. from the

  1188. mountains

  1189. and flow

  1190. from all

  1191. the hills

  1192. and I

  1193. will bring

  1194. my people

  1195. Israel

  1196. back from

  1197. exile.

  1198. They will

  1199. rebuild

  1200. the ruined

  1201. cities

  1202. and live

  1203. in them.

  1204. They will

  1205. plant vineyards

  1206. and drink

  1207. their wine.

  1208. They will

  1209. make gardens

  1210. and eat

  1211. their fruit.

  1212. I will

  1213. plant Israel

  1214. in their

  1215. own land,

  1216. never again

  1217. to be uprooted

  1218. from the

  1219. land I have

  1220. given them,

  1221. says the

  1222. Lord your

  1223. God.

  1224. Isaiah

  1225. 25,

  1226. and I'll

  1227. read verses

  1228. 1, 6,

  1229. and 8.

  1230. Lord,

  1231. you are my

  1232. God.

  1233. I will

  1234. exalt you

  1235. and praise

  1236. your name,

  1237. for in

  1238. perfect faithfulness

  1239. you have

  1240. done wonderful

  1241. things,

  1242. things planned

  1243. long ago.

  1244. On this

  1245. mountain,

  1246. the Lord

  1247. Almighty

  1248. will prepare

  1249. a feast

  1250. of rich

  1251. food for

  1252. all peoples,

  1253. a banquet

  1254. of aged

  1255. wine,

  1256. the best

  1257. of meats

  1258. and the

  1259. finest

  1260. of wines.

  1261. He will

  1262. swallow up

  1263. death

  1264. forever.

  1265. The

  1266. sovereign

  1267. Lord

  1268. will wipe

  1269. away the

  1270. tears

  1271. from all

  1272. faces.

  1273. He will

  1274. remove

  1275. his people's

  1276. disgrace

  1277. from all

  1278. the earth.

  1279. The

  1280. Lord

  1281. has spoken.

  1282. So,

  1283. let's

  1284. look at

  1285. the language

  1286. in those

  1287. two passages.

  1288. Amos 9

  1289. says,

  1290. the days

  1291. are coming.

  1292. So,

  1293. we know

  1294. that this

  1295. is referring

  1296. to sometime

  1297. in the

  1298. future.

  1299. Then we

  1300. see language

  1301. such as,

  1302. never again

  1303. to be

  1304. uprooted,

  1305. the sovereign

  1306. Lord will

  1307. wipe away

  1308. the tears

  1309. from all

  1310. faces,

  1311. and the

  1312. Lord will

  1313. swallow up

  1314. death

  1315. forever.

  1316. And today

  1317. when we

  1318. think of

  1319. a time

  1320. that has

  1321. those three

  1322. characteristics,

  1323. when God

  1324. will wipe

  1325. away every

  1326. tear from

  1327. every eye,

  1328. when we

  1329. will never

  1330. again be

  1331. uprooted,

  1332. when death

  1333. will be

  1334. no more,

  1335. what are

  1336. we thinking

  1337. of?

  1338. We're

  1339. thinking of

  1340. the age

  1341. to come

  1342. and the

  1343. kingdom

  1344. to come,

  1345. a time

  1346. and a

  1347. place where

  1348. death

  1349. will be

  1350. no more,

  1351. where we

  1352. will not

  1353. be exiles

  1354. or displaced,

  1355. but we will

  1356. be fully at

  1357. home,

  1358. a place

  1359. where God

  1360. will wipe

  1361. away every

  1362. tear.

  1363. And bringing

  1364. together all

  1365. these ideas,

  1366. plus the

  1367. idea of

  1368. wedding and

  1369. marriage,

  1370. we turn to

  1371. the book

  1372. of Revelation.

  1373. Your Bible's at

  1374. the end,

  1375. and the book

  1376. of Revelation

  1377. talks at length

  1378. about the age

  1379. to come and the

  1380. kingdom to come.

  1381. And in

  1382. verse,

  1383. excuse me,

  1384. in chapter 21

  1385. of Revelation,

  1386. let me turn

  1387. there.

  1388. It says,

  1389. Revelation 21,

  1390. then I saw a

  1391. new heaven and

  1392. a new earth,

  1393. for the first

  1394. heaven and the

  1395. first earth

  1396. had passed

  1397. away,

  1398. and there was

  1399. no longer

  1400. any sea.

  1401. I saw the

  1402. holy city,

  1403. the new

  1404. Jerusalem,

  1405. coming down

  1406. out of heaven

  1407. from God,

  1408. prepared as a

  1409. bride beautifully

  1410. dressed for her

  1411. husband.

  1412. And I heard a

  1413. loud voice from

  1414. the throne saying,

  1415. look,

  1416. God's dwelling

  1417. place is now

  1418. among the people,

  1419. and he will dwell

  1420. with them.

  1421. They will be his

  1422. people,

  1423. and God himself

  1424. will be with them

  1425. and be their

  1426. God.

  1427. He will wipe away

  1428. every tear from

  1429. their eyes.

  1430. There will be no

  1431. more death or

  1432. mourning or crying

  1433. or pain,

  1434. for the old order

  1435. of things has

  1436. passed away.

  1437. Today we've

  1438. looked at this

  1439. short passage from

  1440. the Bible,

  1441. from John chapter

    John 2 chapter mention

  1442. 2,

  1443. but hopefully we've

  1444. seen how full of

  1445. meaning it is,

  1446. how dense and

  1447. rich with

  1448. significance it

  1449. is.

  1450. What Jesus did

  1451. there was more

  1452. than a miracle.

  1453. It was a sign.

  1454. It gives us a

  1455. glimpse of God's

  1456. glory.

  1457. It gives us a

  1458. foretaste of the

  1459. age to come.

  1460. When a wedding

  1461. 2,000 years ago

  1462. was on the brink

  1463. of failure because

  1464. they were about

  1465. to run out of

  1466. wine,

  1467. Jesus performed

  1468. a small-scale

  1469. act of salvation

  1470. by turning

  1471. gallons of water

  1472. into gallons of

  1473. wine,

  1474. and thereby

  1475. spared these

  1476. families from

  1477. likely lasting

  1478. shame and

  1479. preserved their

  1480. honor.

  1481. It was a

  1482. miracle,

  1483. but it was

  1484. more than a

  1485. miracle,

  1486. because he gave

  1487. them and he

  1488. gives us a

  1489. foretaste of the

  1490. age to come

  1491. and a glimpse

  1492. of God's

  1493. glory.

  1494. The passage

  1495. in John also

  1496. says that Jesus

  1497. was invited to

  1498. the wedding,

  1499. and remember it

  1500. says that Mary

  1501. told the servants,

  1502. do whatever he

  1503. tells you.

  1504. Likewise,

  1505. we need to

  1506. invite Jesus

  1507. into our lives

  1508. and do what he

  1509. says.

  1510. We need to

  1511. invite Jesus

  1512. into our lives

  1513. and do what he

  1514. says.

  1515. And remember

  1516. what the

  1517. master of the

  1518. banquet says

  1519. after he

  1520. tastes this

  1521. water that

  1522. had been

  1523. turned into

  1524. wine.

  1525. He says,

  1526. everyone brings

  1527. out the choice

  1528. wine first and

  1529. then the cheaper

  1530. wine after the

  1531. guests have had

  1532. too much to

  1533. drink, but you

  1534. have saved the

  1535. best till now.

  1536. You have saved

  1537. the best till

  1538. now.

  1539. And this

  1540. reminds us that

  1541. God's way is

  1542. not the

  1543. conventional way.

  1544. God's timing is

  1545. not always our

  1546. timing.

  1547. God's ways are

  1548. unexpected and

  1549. sometimes contrary

  1550. to the ways of

  1551. the world.

  1552. But when we

  1553. have experienced

  1554. and tasted what

  1555. he has done for

  1556. us, we will

  1557. see that his

  1558. way is the

  1559. best.

  1560. And we

  1561. will have

  1562. hope.

  1563. We have

  1564. hope because

  1565. we know that

  1566. the best is

  1567. yet to come.

  1568. When we

  1569. invite Jesus

  1570. into our lives

  1571. and we do

  1572. what he says,

  1573. we have

  1574. hope, we

  1575. have the

  1576. promise that

  1577. the best is

  1578. yet to come.

  1579. Amen.

  1580. Amen.

  1581. Amen.
