  5. Good morning, church family.

  6. My name is Stevie.

  7. I'm part of the North Berkeley Community Group.

  8. This morning I'll be reading the scripture lesson.

  9. It's from the Gospel of John, chapter 2, verses 15 to 23.

    John 2:15–23

  10. When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

  11. In the temple courts he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves,

  12. and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

  13. So he made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts, both sheep and cattle.

  14. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

  15. To those who sold doves he said,

  16. Get these out of here.

  17. Stop turning my father's house into a market.

  18. His disciples remembered that it is written,

  19. Zeal for your house will consume me.

  20. The Jews then responded to him,

  21. What sign can you show us to prove your authority to do all this?

  22. Jesus answered them,

  23. Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days.

  24. They replied,

  25. It has taken 46 years to build this temple,

  26. and you're going to raise it in three days?

  27. But the temple he had spoken of was his body.

  28. After he was raised from the dead,

  29. his disciples recalled what he had said.

  30. Then they believed the scripture and the words that Jesus had spoken.

  31. Now while he was in Jerusalem at the Passover festival,

  32. many people saw the signs he was performing and believed in his name.

  33. But Jesus would not entrust himself to them,

  34. for he knew all people.

  35. He did not need any testimony about mankind,

  36. for he knew what was in each person.

  37. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  38. Praise to you, O Christ.

  39. Good morning, Christ Church.

  40. And again, Happy New Year.

  41. New Year, new you, right?

  42. How many of you made New Year's resolutions this year?

  43. How many of you, your resolutions included the word Omicron?

  44. So many disappointing disruptions right now, right?

  45. But thankfully, this appears to be mild.

  46. We think it's going to peak in the next week or so,

  47. and hopefully pass over pretty quickly.

  48. And I'm grateful to have such a highly vaccinated and boosted church.

  49. We were 98% vaccinated back in May.

  50. If you're new with us, that's just maybe helpful information to have.

  51. And our plan during this season is what it's been the whole time,

  52. which is just to keep calm and carry on.

  53. Remember when the NBA shut down and the pandemic became real.

  54. You guys remember the NBA shutting down?

  55. Well, I think the NBA is going to lead us out of the pandemic as well.

  56. The Omicron wave seems to have peaked in the league already.

  57. And if the NBA can find a way to keep playing,

  58. then surely the people of God can find a way to keep doing what we do.

  59. Because I believe what we're doing is infinitely more important

  60. than what the NBA is doing.

  61. And with that, I want to say go Warriors.

  62. And actually, I think Steph Curry would agree with what I just said,

  63. which is really cool.

  64. Maybe your New Year's resolution did not include the word Omicron,

  65. but what kind of change are we typically hoping for with these resolutions?

  66. Many of us want to exercise more, lose weight, get organized,

  67. learn a new skill or hobby, kick a bad habit,

  68. spend less, save more, invest more time in our family and our friends,

  69. maybe travel more, read more books.

  70. What's interesting to me is that 50% of Americans set New Year's resolutions,

  71. but you know what happens a year later?

  72. 88% of those resolutions fail.

  73. That's 156 million failed resolutions.

  74. Maybe you're here today and you resolve to lose five pounds.

  75. Nine days in, you've only got 10 pounds left to go, right?

  76. Change is hard.

  77. And if it were easy, everybody would do it.

  78. We need support for whatever change we want to see in our lives.

  79. So if one of your desires is to grow closer to God in 2022,

  80. I want to say that you won't do that on your own.

  81. That you need a church, this church or any other church,

  82. you need to form the habit of Sunday worship every week,

  83. get involved in a midweek community group,

  84. maybe come to our Christianity Explored,

  85. which starts this Wednesday night.

  86. But if you want to see change in your life,

  87. research has shown us you can't do that strictly on your own.

  88. You need a strong community that's built for change.

  89. And here in the church, we have the means of God's grace.

  90. We have the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

  91. We have 2,000 years of enablement for deep and lasting change.

  92. You want to know what my New Year's resolution is for your life?

  93. It is to lead you into a deeper relationship with Christ and His church

  94. through community and for the city.

  95. As Andrew mentioned, that's our mission.

  96. That's our New Year's resolution for you in 2022.

  97. It's the reason we preach the Gospels every year from Christmas to Easter.

  98. It's the reason we create discussion questions for our community groups.

  99. The reason we create a daily Bible reading plan through the Gospel of John.

  100. All of these are meant to help you have an encounter with Jesus Christ.

  101. Because there's no more powerful agent of change in the whole world

  102. than to have a relationship and a relationship that's getting deeper and deeper with Jesus.

  103. If He rose from the dead, whatever change you want to see happen in your life is no problem for Him.

  104. But He wants to do it in the context of His community.

  105. And right now, everything's telling us to lean away from community.

  106. And I'm inviting you to lean in to community.

  107. Unless you're sick.

  108. Stay home.

  109. Stay home.

  110. We're in the Gospel of John.

  111. We focused for a few weeks on John 1 leading up to Christmas.

  112. And we started the New Year in John 2 last Sunday where Jesus changes the water to wine,

  113. changes shame to joy.

  114. Today we're looking at Jesus who cleanses and redefines the temple.

  115. And I think God's word for us today is that zealous Jesus makes bold claims

  116. about God, His body, and our hearts.

  117. Zealous Jesus makes bold claims about God, His body, and our hearts.

  118. I want to start with this, that zealous Jesus makes bold claims about God.

  119. Listen to verse 13.

  120. When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover, Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

  121. and in the temple courts He found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves,

  122. and others sitting at tables exchanging money.

  123. Some historical context, if you don't know the Bible very well,

  124. you can't be a Jew without the Torah and the temple.

  125. And in the Torah, the first five books of the Bible,

  126. we learn about Israel's exodus from Egypt, the night of the Passover,

  127. the sacrificial lambs, the blood on the doorposts, the mercy of God,

  128. the angel of death passing over to save God's people.

  129. And that yearly, there's a yearly celebration of that Torah event

  130. in the temple on Mount Zion.

  131. And Jesus, being a faithful Jew, He walks, you know,

  132. that five-day journey from Galilee to Jerusalem three to four times every year

  133. to celebrate the biblical feasts.

  134. And He gets to Passover, this one particular year at the beginning of His ministry,

  135. and tiny Jerusalem is full of people.

  136. Probably about two million-plus people are packed.

  137. It's just crowded wall to wall.

  138. And what does Jesus do to start His ministry at Israel's ground zero

  139. amid massive crowds of pilgrims?

  140. We read in verse 15, this is what He decided to do.

  141. He made a whip out of cords and drove all from the temple courts,

  142. both sheep and cattle.

  143. He scattered the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.

  144. Probably not the best way to win friends and influence people.

  145. Is this the Jesus that we introduce to our young kids?

  146. Maybe you had a picture of Jesus in your room or in your Bible as a child,

  147. and it was this idealized figure in a meadow with a lot of flowers,

  148. and He's holding a lamb, and little boys and girls are reaching out to Jesus.

  149. It's probably a sentimentalized, anemic, passive figure.

  150. We teach our kids about gentle Jesus, meek and mild,

  151. healing Jesus, forgiving Jesus, feeding Jesus, teaching Jesus.

  152. But what about whipping Jesus, who's driving the animals?

  153. What about table-turning Jesus, who's scattering the coins?

  154. We love the Jesus of John 2, who turns water into wine and brings the joy of the feast.

  155. But we're not so sure that we like this Jesus.

  156. The rest of John 2, that makes a whip of judgment.

  157. Now, the cords of this whip were the rushes that you would put under animals,

  158. and they were not strong at all.

  159. They wouldn't have hurt the animals.

  160. It's just a little whip woven together out of straw.

  161. Jesus is not physically overpowering these animals,

  162. but what He is doing is spiritually overpowering the people with His zeal for God

  163. and His moral outrage.

  164. Now, imagine what would happen if you did this.

  165. You waited till the biggest day in your office or your department.

  166. It's an open house.

  167. There's a year-end party, and you bust open the doors,

  168. and you start turning desks upside down and throwing papers all over the place.

  169. And you say, with a really loud voice, you say,

  170. this whole place is a disgrace.

  171. It's corrupt from top to bottom.

  172. You ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

  173. This entire system is finished.

  174. What do we do with this Jesus?

  175. Well, you basically have two options.

  176. You can go the Thomas Jefferson route,

  177. and you can basically just cut this part and any other part

  178. out of your Bible that you don't like.

  179. Or you can get comfortable with a Jesus that makes you uncomfortable.

  180. And I think that's why stories like this are in the Gospels.

  181. Listen to verse 16.

  182. To those who sold doves, He said,

  183. Get these out of here.

  184. Stop turning my Father's house into a market.

  185. His disciples remember that it is written,

  186. Zeal for your house will consume me.

  187. Zeal.

  188. Zeal.

  189. What is zeal?

  190. Zeal is energy.

  191. It's enthusiasm.

  192. It's passion and fire.

  193. It's intensity, fervency, and vigor.

  194. The antonym of zeal is apathy and indifference.

  195. What this tells us is that the real Jesus of the Gospels

  196. is going to do things and say things over and over

  197. that rub you the wrong way and make you say,

  198. who do you think you are?

  199. Which is what they ask Him here.

  200. Jesus comes in and He says,

  201. This is not your market.

  202. This is my Father's house.

  203. Who has the audacity to call God my Father?

  204. Not our Father, but my Father.

  205. Jesus is making a claim to a special,

  206. unique relationship with God as the eternal Son of God.

  207. And what is He so zealous for?

  208. What is consuming Him and burning in Him and eating Him up?

  209. It's not so much the evils of the world.

  210. It's the fact that the people of God have lost their purity.

  211. This is to be the house of my Father,

  212. but you turn it into a market.

  213. This is to be the place of worship,

  214. but what you filled it with is a bunch of noise

  215. and mess and distraction and business

  216. and banking and money and deals.

  217. Now, don't get me wrong.

  218. Banking and business need to be done.

  219. Money needs to be changed.

  220. The animals here need to be purchased

  221. so they can be sacrificed.

  222. All of this is legitimate and essential.

  223. But the issue here is location, location, location.

  224. Jesus says, I want you to prepare for worship

  225. and I want you to do it in a different way,

  226. at a different time, in a different place.

  227. Why?

  228. Because God deserves respect.

  229. And Jesus has come to restore honor to God.

  230. What's the first thing He teaches us to pray

  231. in the Lord's Prayer?

  232. First line.

  233. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

  234. And He puts that at the top line of the prayer

  235. because it's His highest concern.

  236. It was precisely Jesus' passion for God's worship

  237. that led to Jesus' passion and death at human hands.

  238. That's why they arrested Him and put Him on trial.

  239. Jesus was so on fire for the majesty, the power,

  240. the holiness of God that He would get badly burned.

  241. And that's what Jesus' cross tells us.

  242. It tells us that if you have zeal for God and for His house,

  243. it's gonna hurt you too.

  244. So what does this mean for us, Christchurch,

  245. as we start a new year?

  246. I just wanna ask some questions.

  247. How closely do we resemble Jesus' zeal

  248. about worshiping and honoring God?

  249. And would people recognize in us

  250. Jesus' consuming passion for the quality,

  251. authenticity, and purity of our relationships with God

  252. and our worship given to God?

  253. I want you to think about this text from the prophet Malachi.

  254. This is Malachi chapter three, verse one.

  255. You've probably heard this if you've ever heard

  256. Handel's Messiah.

  257. It says this,

  258. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking

  259. will come to His temple,

  260. but who can endure the day of His coming?

  261. Who can stand when He appears?

  262. For He will be like a refiner's fire

  263. and a launderer's soap.

  264. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver.

  265. He will purify the Levites and refine them

  266. like gold and silver.

  267. And then the Lord will have people

  268. who will bring offerings in righteousness.

  269. If Jesus were to put us in our worship

  270. through His refiner's fire,

  271. what slag, what dross would be removed

  272. so that what remains is pure gold?

  273. If Jesus were to cleanse us in our worship

  274. with His launderer's soap,

  275. soaking and beading and scrubbing and rinsing,

  276. what dirt, what stains would be removed

  277. so that what remains is pure fabric?

  278. If Jesus were to put together a whip

  279. to drive out the animals of distraction in our lives

  280. and to overturn the tables of lesser priorities

  281. in our lives that keep us from morning prayer

  282. and daily scripture and showing up prepared

  283. and on time week after week to Sunday worship,

  284. what would those distractions and lesser priorities be?

  285. Malachi 3 says,

  286. then the Lord will have people

  287. who will bring offerings in righteousness.

  288. John 2 says that whatever is in our lives

  289. that needs to be burned up in the refiner's fire,

  290. whatever needs to be washed away by the launderer's soap,

  291. whatever is impure,

  292. whatever is unrighteous,

  293. whatever is insignificant and unimportant

  294. and not worthy of God,

  295. Jesus says to that thing that He's pointing at

  296. in my life and in your life,

  297. get rid of it.

  298. Get it out of here.

  299. Get rid of everything that's keeping you

  300. away from my Father's house

  301. and get rid of everything that's not appropriate

  302. and fitting to bring into my Father's house.

  303. You guys with me?

  304. You guys with me?

  305. Okay.

  306. The mask, I can't tell.

  307. The house of my Father is not a transactional market

  308. among equals.

  309. The house of my Father is the place

  310. where the almighty, majestic, holy God

  311. wants little people like us to come

  312. and be at home with Him

  313. in personal, intimate relationships.

  314. The Father's house is a place

  315. where we enter into a familial covenant bond

  316. with Him by His Son and by His Spirit.

  317. It's the place where by the Spirit

  318. we come to share in the relationship

  319. that the Son has with His Father.

  320. Wow.

  321. What a high privilege.

  322. And yet what a high responsibility

  323. for the people of God.

  324. You see, in John 2,

  325. we encounter the Lord of the wine

  326. and the Lord of the whip.

  327. Both.

  328. We can't separate them.

  329. We have to have both together.

  330. In the sermon on the wine,

  331. we expect in a healthy church

  332. to find Jesus meeting the personal needs

  333. of ordinary people

  334. and quietly entering into their private crises

  335. and gently but powerfully

  336. moving individuals and families

  337. from shame to joy.

  338. That's the turning of the water into wine.

  339. But the sermon on the whip

  340. tells us to expect a Jesus

  341. who will come and judge the public worship

  342. of the people of God

  343. and to raise up a people

  344. who are zealously passionate

  345. for the purity of the people of God.

  346. So that's zealous Jesus.

  347. Add that to all of your other Jesuses.

  348. Zealous Jesus wants to make bold claims here

  349. about God,

  350. but also about his body.

  351. He wants to make bold claims about his body.

  352. It's a minor miracle that Jesus

  353. is not arrested on the spot.

  354. It's shocking that people put up

  355. with this behavior,

  356. this protest from this lone agitator,

  357. this unknown prophet from Galilee,

  358. but they do have questions.

  359. And in verse 18, they say,

  360. what sign can you show us

  361. to prove your authority to do all this?

  362. Now, Thomas Jefferson,

  363. he did actually remove this part

  364. from verse 17 and following

  365. from his Bible

  366. because he didn't much like

  367. a divine authoritative Christ.

  368. Because listen to Jesus' answer.

  369. How does he answer the question?

  370. He says in verse 19,

  371. destroy this temple

  372. and I will raise it again

  373. in three days.

  374. That's a cataclysmic claim.

  375. We modern people miss it

  376. because we don't really know

  377. what temples are,

  378. but ancient people knew

  379. that the temple was the place

  380. where heaven and earth,

  381. where the eternal

  382. and the temporal,

  383. where the supernatural

  384. and the natural

  385. intersect and meet together.

  386. It's a cosmic crossroads

  387. crossroads,

  388. where the divine resides

  389. and where the divine presence

  390. is mediated

  391. and where the gap

  392. between us

  393. and the divine

  394. is bridged.

  395. If you go to Mount Zion today

  396. in Jerusalem,

  397. you'll see that it's,

  398. you'll see why it's one of the

  399. wonders of the ancient world.

  400. It's a building project.

  401. Some of us went a few years back.

  402. It's a building project

  403. that lasted 46 years

  404. and it's just a remarkable

  405. architectural achievement.

  406. Massive retaining walls,

  407. 1,500 feet long,

  408. 150 feet high

  409. and some of these,

  410. some of the blocks

  411. are 40 feet wide,

  412. 500 tons apiece.

  413. And it's this platform

  414. that creates 37 acres,

  415. basically 25 American football fields

  416. on the top of this platform.

  417. And when you get up

  418. on the top of this gigantic plaza,

  419. there are these large staircases

  420. that go up even higher

  421. into the court of the Gentiles

  422. and then the court

  423. of the Israelites.

  424. And then you come

  425. to where the Passover lambs

  426. were placed

  427. on the altar of sacrifice

  428. and then you look beyond that

  429. to the temple itself

  430. covered in gold,

  431. towering another 150 feet high

  432. where only one priest

  433. can enter one time a day

  434. and where only the high priest

  435. can go into the very innermost part,

  436. the Holy of Holies,

  437. one time a year.

  438. What's up with all this?

  439. What does all this mean?

  440. Why go to all the trouble?

  441. Well, the temple tells us

  442. that the ultimate transcendent mystery,

  443. the mystery behind all mysteries

  444. in this world,

  445. that gap between that mysterious power

  446. and us has been bridged

  447. and that all that's wrong with us

  448. can be made right here

  449. by the priests

  450. and the sacrificial lambs

  451. and all the prayers

  452. and the price that's being paid

  453. in this place.

  454. The temple is the place

  455. where you find the one thing

  456. in the whole world

  457. that you can't explain,

  458. the one thing that explains

  459. everything else.

  460. And what does Jesus claim

  461. about this place?

  462. He says, I'm it.

  463. I am the temple.

  464. I'm the ultimate reality

  465. that you seek.

  466. Now, if you go back

  467. just a minute

  468. to the Old Testament,

  469. to 2 Chronicles 7,

  470. King Solomon

  471. builds this amazing temple

  472. and he dedicates it.

  473. He prays this prayer

  474. and we're told

  475. when he prays,

  476. fire came down from heaven

  477. and the glory of the Lord

  478. filled the temple

  479. to a degree

  480. that the priests

  481. couldn't serve anymore.

  482. The people,

  483. it says,

  484. they fell down

  485. with their faces

  486. on the ground

  487. and they worshiped

  488. and they cried out,

  489. the Lord is good.

  490. His love endures forever.

  491. That's what the scriptures

  492. call the Shekinah glory of God.

  493. And that same glory,

  494. that divine presence of God

  495. had come down

  496. at Mount Sinai

  497. a long time before.

  498. It's basically an earthquake,

  499. a hurricane,

  500. and a volcano

  501. all in one

  502. and Moses had the audacity

  503. to say,

  504. Lord, show me

  505. the fullness of your glory.

  506. And what did God say to Moses?

  507. He said,

  508. Moses, no way.

  509. You would die.

  510. You can't handle my glory.

  511. And here,

  512. the glory of God

  513. comes down to the temple

  514. and it sweeps people

  515. off of their feet

  516. and it casts them down

  517. on the ground

  518. and here,

  519. Jesus at the Passover says,

  520. that's me.

  521. My body,

  522. my physical person

  523. houses the Shekinah glory

  524. of God.

  525. And the question for us

  526. is have we adequately

  527. understood Jesus' claim?

  528. Colossians 2 verse 9

    Colossians 2:9

  529. says,

  530. for in Christ

  531. all the fullness

  532. of the deity

  533. lives in bodily form.

  534. And we've been looking

  535. over and over

  536. at John 1 14

  537. where it says,

  538. the word became flesh

  539. and tabernacled

  540. or templed among us

  541. and we have seen

  542. his glory,

  543. it says.

  544. Now that's a huge claim

  545. in and of itself,

  546. but Jesus goes

  547. one step further here

  548. and he says,

  549. take this temple

  550. and destroy it

  551. and I will raise it up

  552. again in three days.

  553. This destroyed

  554. yet rebuilt temple

  555. is simple code

  556. from Jesus

  557. about his crucified

  558. yet resurrected body.

  559. And what he's saying

  560. is that every other temple

  561. you go to the priest,

  562. you bring the sacrifice,

  563. you pay the price,

  564. but in this new temple,

  565. I am the priest,

  566. I am the sacrificial lamb

  567. and I pay the full price.

  568. Here is where

  569. the atoning work of God,

  570. the mercy of God,

  571. the forgiveness of God

  572. happens right here

  573. in me.

  574. Jesus is saying,

  575. I'm the God

  576. on the other side

  577. of the gap

  578. and I've come over

  579. on your side

  580. and when I die

  581. on the cross,

  582. I'm gonna put a bridge

  583. that's gonna bridge

  584. the infinite gap

  585. between you and God.

  586. For I am the temple

  587. that all humanity

  588. has been looking for.

  589. I've come to fulfill

  590. the highest ideals

  591. of all the temples

  592. of this world

  593. and render them

  594. obsolete.

  595. Has anybody else

  596. made such a claim?

  597. Any other religion

  598. made such a claim?

  599. Jesus,

  600. on this Passover,

  601. claims to be

  602. the temple,

  603. the house of the Father,

  604. but three Passovers

  605. from now,

  606. in the spring of 30 AD,

  607. on the night

  608. before his crucifixion,

  609. Jesus gives his disciples

  610. a new Passover.

  611. At that time

  612. when liberation

  613. and freedom

  614. and rescue from slavery

  615. are being celebrated,

  616. Jesus breaks bread

  617. and he pours out wine

  618. and he says,

  619. my body

  620. and my blood

  621. are the new Passover

  622. sacrifice for you.

  623. And friends,

  624. the crucified yet risen

  625. Jesus comes among us

  626. every time we gather

  627. in this place

  628. and he does the same thing.

  629. He says,

  630. the temple of my body

  631. was destroyed on the cross

  632. to free you from your sins.

  633. The temple of my body

  634. was raised up

  635. on the third day

  636. to liberate you

  637. from death.

  638. You cannot bridge

  639. the gap

  640. without me.

  641. You cannot

  642. be the priest.

  643. You cannot pay

  644. the sacrifice.

  645. You cannot

  646. give

  647. what it takes.

  648. You can't do it

  649. without me,

  650. so come

  651. put your trust

  652. in me.

  653. Seek the continuing

  654. presence of God

  655. in me.

  656. Make your home

  657. here with me

  658. in my Father's house

  659. and that's what

  660. we're going to do

  661. in just a moment

  662. as we come

  663. to Jesus

  664. at his table.

  665. But I want to say

  666. one final thing

  667. because Jesus,

  668. zealous Jesus,

  669. makes a bold claim

  670. here about God.

  671. He makes a really

  672. bold claim here

  673. about his body.

  674. But he goes

  675. one step further

  676. and he says,

  677. he makes a bold

  678. claim about us,

  679. about our hearts.

  680. Jesus came

  681. at a time,

  682. Passover,

  683. and to a place,

  684. the temple,

  685. that was so central

  686. in the life

  687. of Israel

  688. that what

  689. he did there

  690. had to reverberate

  691. through all

  692. of Israel,

  693. through the whole

  694. nation because

  695. the temple

  696. is the beating

  697. heart of Judaism.

  698. It's not just

  699. another church

  700. on the street

  701. corner.

  702. The temple

  703. is the center

  704. of worship

  705. and music,

  706. of politics

  707. and society,

  708. the center

  709. of national

  710. celebration

  711. and mourning.

  712. And here this

  713. unknown prophet

  714. from Galilee

  715. comes and he

  716. shockingly turns

  717. everything upside

  718. down and he

  719. makes quite a

  720. stir.

  721. In fact,

  722. he impresses

  723. quite a number

  724. of people.

  725. In today's terms,

  726. we would say

  727. that Jesus had

  728. many followers

  729. on Twitter

  730. and Instagram

  731. and TikTok.

  732. Somebody would

  733. have made a

  734. popular YouTube

  735. channel and

  736. started a podcast

  737. and he'd

  738. have had lots

  739. of likes

  740. and shares

  741. and views

  742. and Jesus

  743. goes viral

  744. in this moment

  745. and he becomes

  746. an influencer.

  747. An influencer

  748. is, quote,

  749. someone who has

  750. large followings

  751. of enthusiastic,

  752. engaged people

  753. who pay close

  754. attention to

  755. their views.

  756. Now,

  757. what does Jesus

  758. think about all

  759. these new

  760. enthusiastic followers?

  761. How does he

  762. relate to them?

  763. How does Jesus

  764. leverage his

  765. mega-influencer

  766. status?

  767. Verse 23,

  768. now while he

  769. was in Jerusalem

  770. at the Passover

  771. festival,

  772. many people saw

  773. the signs he was

  774. performing and

  775. believed in his

  776. name, but Jesus

  777. would not entrust

  778. himself to them

  779. for he knew

  780. all people.

  781. He did not need

  782. human testimony

  783. about them for

  784. he knew what

  785. was in them.

  786. Jesus knows

  787. the difference

  788. between believers

  789. and believers.

  790. Jesus makes

  791. a key distinction

  792. between two

  793. different types

  794. of belief,

  795. which seems

  796. to be the

  797. difference between

  798. belief that is

  799. shallow and

  800. belief that is

  801. deep.

  802. Belief that is

  803. temporary and

  804. belief that is

  805. ongoing.

  806. Belief that is

  807. circumstantial and

  808. belief that is

  809. authentic.

  810. And the question

  811. here is, will

  812. the belief of

  813. these so-called

  814. believers stick?

  815. Will it abide?

  816. Jesus is constantly

  817. begging this

  818. question.

  819. His first and

  820. greatest parable is

  821. the parable of the

  822. sower, the seed, and

  823. the soils, where

  824. three soils received

  825. the seed of God, but

  826. they failed to bear

  827. fruit.

  828. And only one of

  829. those four soils,

  830. who got the divine

  831. seed, took root and

  832. bore fruit.

  833. And in that parable

  834. that interprets all

  835. the rest of the

  836. parables, Jesus is

  837. saying, look, there's

  838. a belief that's

  839. shallow and

  840. temporary and

  841. circumstantial, and

  842. there's a belief that

  843. is deep and

  844. ongoing and

  845. authentic.

  846. And Jesus is

  847. deeply concerned

  848. here about

  849. untrustworthy types

  850. of believing.

  851. This belief is

  852. based upon things

  853. that are seen, not

  854. upon the Holy

  855. Spirit who is

  856. unseen.

  857. Jesus is

  858. looking for a

  859. faith that he can

  860. believe in.

  861. Right?

  862. He doesn't believe in

  863. their belief in him.

  864. Why?

  865. Because like it

  866. says in 1 Samuel 16

  867. 7, the Lord does

  868. not look at the

  869. things human beings

  870. look at.

  871. People look at the

  872. outward appearance,

  873. but the Lord looks at

  874. the heart.

  875. So how can you know

  876. that you're a

  877. believer with the

  878. kind of belief that

  879. Jesus believes in?

  880. Well, say you

  881. invite a friend over

  882. to your apartment or

  883. to your house, and

  884. they walk in and

  885. they say, hey, you

  886. know what, let's move

  887. this couch from here

  888. to there, and let's

  889. put that table here,

  890. let's put that right

  891. over there.

  892. And you say to

  893. yourself, hey, what

  894. sort of authority do

  895. you think you have?

  896. I'm the owner and

  897. you're the guest.

  898. But you see, that's

  899. the point of John 2.

  900. Jesus comes in and

  901. he starts moving all

  902. the furniture around.

  903. And he's telling

  904. people what to do as

  905. if he owns the place

  906. because he does.

  907. And Jesus, we're told,

  908. he knows the difference

  909. between someone who

  910. sees him merely as a

  911. guest of their life or

  912. as the actual owner of

  913. their life.

  914. Between somebody who

  915. renders to him marginal

  916. authority and somebody

  917. who surrenders to him

  918. absolute authority.

  919. Somebody who says,

  920. Jesus, come on in and

  921. sit here as my guest.

  922. Or Jesus, why don't you

  923. come on in and move my

  924. couch and rearrange my

  925. life in whatever way you

  926. see fit.

  927. That's the Jesus we have

  928. in John chapter 2.

    John 2 chapter mention

  929. And that's why over and

  930. over the scriptures tell

  931. us to examine ourselves.

  932. Paul says in 2 Corinthians

  933. 13, 5, examine yourselves

  934. to see whether you are

  935. actually living in the

  936. faith.

  937. Examine yourselves to see

  938. whether you are actually

  939. living in the faith.

  940. And that's probably not a

  941. bad way for us to start a

  942. new year, 2022.

  943. Do we have the kind of

  944. belief that Jesus believes

  945. in?

  946. That's the question for us

  947. today.

  948. In the name of the Father,

  949. the Son, and the Holy

  950. Spirit.

  951. Amen.
