  5. A reading from the Gospel of John, chapter 4, verses 5 to 29 and 39 to 42 as printed in the liturgy.

    John 4:5–29

  6. So he came to a town of Samaria called Sychar, near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  7. Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey, was sitting beside the well.

  8. It was about the sixth hour.

  9. A woman from Samaria came to draw water.

  10. Jesus said to her, Give me a drink.

  11. For his disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

  12. The Samaritan woman said to him,

  13. How is it that you, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?

  14. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  15. Jesus answered her,

  16. If you knew the gift of God and who it is that is saying to you, give me a drink,

  17. you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.

  18. The woman said to him, Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep.

  19. Where do you get that living water?

  20. Are you greater than our father Jacob?

  21. He gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.

  22. Jesus said to her, Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again,

  23. but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again.

  24. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.

  25. The woman said to him, Sir, give me this water so that I will not be thirsty or have to come here to draw water.

  26. Jesus said to her, Go call your husband and come here.

  27. The woman answered him, I have no husband.

  28. Jesus said to her, You are right in saying I have no husband, for you have had five husbands,

  29. and the one you now have is not your husband.

  30. What you have said is true.

  31. The woman said to him, Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet.

  32. Our fathers worshipped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.

  33. Jesus said to her, Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father.

  34. You worship what you do not know.

  35. We worship what we know.

  36. For salvation is from the Jews.

  37. But the hour is coming and is now here when the true worshippers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.

  38. For the Father is seeking such people to worship him.

  39. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.

  40. The woman said to him, I know that Messiah is coming, he who is called Christ.

  41. When he comes, he will tell us all things.

  42. Jesus said to her, I who speak to you am he.

  43. Just then his disciples came back.

  44. They marveled that he was talking with a woman, but no one said, what do you seek or why are you talking with her?

  45. So the woman left her water jar and went away into town and said to the people, come see a man who told me all that I ever did.

  46. Can this be the Christ?

  47. Many Samaritans from that town believed in him because of the woman's testimony.

  48. He told me all that I ever did.

  49. So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.

  50. And many more believed because of his word.

  51. They said to the woman, it is no longer because of what you said that we believe,

  52. for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this is indeed the Savior of the world.

  53. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  54. Praise to you, Lord God.

  55. Thank you for that scripture reading, Terry, and good morning, Christ Church.

  56. My name is Andrew.

  57. I'm one of the pastors here.

  58. I missed you last week.

  59. Not that much, though, because I got to sit in a cabin and eat popcorn and throw snowballs at the youth

  60. and teach them about Jesus and the church, and it was a really good time.

  61. Why don't I open us up in prayer, then we'll dive into God's word this morning.

  62. Father, we want to declare with the Samaritans in this village that indeed, this is the Savior of the world.

  63. Would we dive into the depths of what it means that you are the Savior of the world,

  64. what it means that you are the Savior of this Samaritan woman?

  65. Would we be amazed, God, at the way that you deal with us, at the way that you have chosen to be our God among us?

  66. So be honored in the preaching of your word, and we pray these things in the name of Jesus.

  67. Amen.

  68. So we're continuing our series in the Gospel of John.

  69. We're now in chapter four.

  70. We're at the famous story of the woman at the well, Jesus and the woman at the well.

  71. And, you know, this is actually not the first time I've ever preached this text.

  72. The first time was maybe six to eight years ago.

  73. I was a seminary student in Philly at Westminster Seminary,

  74. and I tried looking for my old manuscript, my old audio recording, but I couldn't find it.

  75. And I was really disappointed because I had to start over all over again.

  76. But, you know, maybe it's for the best because while I remember being super excited as this young, aspiring pastor

  77. preaching this, you know, famous text about Jesus and the woman at the well,

  78. I also remember the sermon bombing pretty bad in northeast Philadelphia.

  79. Sorry to those folks.

  80. As in, it was definitely not the bomb, all right?

  81. It was one of those sermons where I came to church that Sunday, like, oh man, I'm not feeling this.

  82. I don't got it today.

  83. I mean, I feel like that most of the time here at Christ Church, but especially that Sunday, I was like, mm-mm.

  84. And the people, they knew.

  85. They were struggling.

  86. So hopefully it'll be better this time.

  87. I can't make any promises.

  88. But yeah, I went away from preaching this passage not feeling like I did it justice.

  89. And then came this week.

  90. And it was, it was like just as hard.

  91. It was just as surprisingly difficult to figure out how to preach this text.

  92. But I think this time around, I've kind of come to understand why this text is a little bit difficult to preach.

  93. It's a pretty long one.

  94. It's got tons of details.

  95. It's overflowing with so many themes that you could pick to preach on.

  96. You could preach Jesus, the healer of racial and ethnic cultural conflict.

  97. Jesus, the uplifter of women and the outcast.

  98. Jesus, the living water that satisfies everyone's thirst.

  99. Jesus as a model for how to share the truth about the Christ.

  100. You could preach on Jesus in sex or marriage or singleness or on worship in spirit and in truth.

  101. There are a lot of ways that you could go with this text, John chapter 4.

    John 4 chapter mention

  102. But I think what makes this passage really, really difficult, especially to preach in 25 to 30 minutes,

  103. is this kind of complicated dialogue between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well.

  104. It's got some really, really strange twists and turns, some really weird transitions throughout the conversation.

  105. I think about it.

  106. It goes from a conversation about water to living water to husbands and then to prophets, right?

  107. And then to mountains and then they talk about worship and then they talk about the end times.

  108. And then all of a sudden Jesus says, I am the Messiah.

  109. And she's leaving her water jug there going into the city and telling everyone,

  110. come see a man who told me all that I ever did.

  111. Thus saith the Lord, right?

  112. That's it.

  113. That's it.

  114. It's strange, right?

  115. Well, what I want to do today is I want to try to help us make sense of all these twists and turns in the story

  116. because I'm really convinced, I'm really convinced that if we can understand why,

  117. after this strange conversation with Jesus,

  118. why this woman all of a sudden leaves her water jug behind and goes back into the town

  119. and tells people to come and see a man who told her all that she ever did,

  120. I think if we can understand why she responded in this way to this encounter with Jesus,

  121. I think we'll get a wonderful glimpse of the heart of God

  122. and the goodness of the good news about Jesus.

  123. I think we'll get a sense of the pursuing love of the Father.

  124. We'll get a sense of the costly grace of the Son

  125. and of this communal fellowship of the Holy Spirit that He wants for us.

  126. A love, a grace, and a fellowship that free us and fill us to be the people,

  127. to live the lives we've always wanted to live.

  128. To live the lives that God has always wanted us to live.

  129. So are we ready to dive in?

  130. We don't have a lot of stories today.

  131. This is the story.

  132. Jesus and the woman at the well, right?

  133. Let's start at verse 5.

  134. You're going to want to have your printed text in front of you, your liturgy,

  135. because we're going to be looking down at this text a lot.

  136. Let's start with verse 5.

  137. So he, Jesus, came to a town of Samaria called Sikar,

  138. near the field that Jacob had given to his son Joseph.

  139. Jacob's well was there, so Jesus, wearied as he was from his journey,

  140. was sitting beside the well.

  141. It was about the sixth hour.

  142. Tons of things we could talk about here, but I want to talk about Samaria.

  143. What is Samaria?

  144. If you know nothing about Samaria, if you know nothing about the Samaritans

  145. and their relationship with Jesus' people, the Jewish people,

  146. what you need to know is that the relationship between the Jewish people

  147. and the Samaritans was incredibly hostile, and it had been for centuries.

  148. All right?

  149. Shortly after the death of King David's son, King Solomon,

  150. after the building of the temple, there was a civil war between the north of Israel

  151. and the south of Israel.

  152. And the south of Israel had its capital in Jerusalem,

  153. and the north of Israel had its capital in Samaria.

  154. And what you need to know about the history of Israel is that,

  155. while the southern kingdom, they did have a few good kings,

  156. the northern kingdom had all terrible kings,

  157. all kings who went their own way, did not follow the way of God.

  158. And then, eventually, for their own political ends,

  159. they set up their own place of worship outside of Jerusalem,

  160. away from the temple that God had told Israel to build.

  161. Like, now we're going to do our own thing.

  162. All right?

  163. So you can imagine, like, in the eyes of the southern Jewish people,

  164. how blasphemous this would have been.

  165. And then, to make matters worse,

  166. when the Assyrians came from the north and the east to come,

  167. and they first conquered the north,

  168. they first conquered Samaria,

  169. shortly after that, the northerners, they began to intermarry

  170. with these foreigners from the north and the east of Assyria,

  171. and they began to intermarry with people who did not worship Yahweh.

  172. And so the religion became even more impure,

  173. and you can imagine the hostility and the division

  174. between the Jewish people and the Samaritans

  175. growing and growing and growing over the centuries.

  176. In 110 BC, there's a Jewish king who comes up

  177. and actually destroys this sacrilegious temple in Samaria.

  178. And then you have another story of maybe six,

  179. I think it's six in the common era,

  180. where there are some Samaritans who sneak into Jerusalem.

  181. They sneak into the Jerusalem temple, and they defile it.

  182. They scatter human bones in it and make it unclean.

  183. There's just tons of animosity, tons of back and forth.

  184. But this is the history between the Jewish people and the Samaritans.

  185. They hated each other.

  186. To the average Jewish person, the Samaritan was a half-breed,

  187. an impure person with an impure religion.

  188. And to the Samaritans, the Jewish people were their judgmental relatives,

  189. the ones who rejected them and saw them as inferior and unfaithful

  190. and unworthy of association and utterly separated from God,

  191. even though they claimed Abraham as their father too.

  192. Now look down with me at verse 7.

  193. This is the history between the Jews and the Samaritans.

  194. Then verse 7, enter a Samaritan woman who's come to draw water.

  195. And this is where things really start to get interesting,

  196. because what was she doing all alone at the sixth hour at high noon

  197. drawing water from this well?

  198. Normally this was supposed to be a communal chore,

  199. a communal activity, the drawing of water,

  200. with all the other women in the town,

  201. and certainly not at the hottest time of the day.

  202. This was supposed to be a communal group chore done in the cool of the morning

  203. or in the cool of the evening.

  204. But here she is.

  205. She's all alone in the heat of the day.

  206. Something's up with this loner of a woman.

  207. And as the text unfolds in verse 18,

  208. that this woman is doing her chores in the heat of the day

  209. and in lonely isolation probably has something to do with the fact

  210. that she has a past.

  211. She has a past.

  212. She's had five husbands and is now with a man who isn't her husband.

  213. She's probably a despised social outcast.

  214. And yet, in spite of Jesus and this woman's weariness in the heat of the day,

  215. in spite of their people's centuries of ethnic hostility,

  216. and in spite of the patriarchal society that they lived in,

  217. in spite of the fact that Jesus knew everything about this woman's past,

  218. in spite of the fact that he was a Jewish rabbi, right,

  219. who if he was seen speaking to such a woman,

  220. it would jeopardize his reputation.

  221. In spite of all these factors,

  222. the most unlikely of conversations ensues

  223. between Jesus and this forsaken outcast of a woman.

  224. And thus begins the longest recorded one-on-one personal encounter with Jesus

  225. in all the gospel accounts.

  226. It's with this woman, of all people,

  227. the Samaritan woman at the well.

  228. It's a conversation between the Son of God

  229. and an unnamed outcast Samaritan woman.

  230. A conversation in which a righteous, faithful, and pure Jewish rabbi

  231. is willing to take an unclean Samaritan woman's cup

  232. and put it to his lips for a drink.

  233. It's a conversation in which the holy creator of the universe

  234. is willing to ask this destitute woman for a favor, for a drink.

  235. This is our God. This is Jesus.

  236. Now, the Samaritan woman is just as astounded

  237. as any Jewish person would be

  238. that Jesus has initiated a conversation with her

  239. and that he's even cool with drinking from her water jar.

  240. She's very aware of and even bound by the social conventions,

  241. the social norms that Jesus had just breached.

  242. And she says in verse 9,

  243. How is it that you, a Jew,

  244. ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?

  245. For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

  246. She's saying, Who do you think you are?

  247. Who do you think I am?

  248. And how can you ask such a favor from me?

  249. But Jesus says in verse 10,

  250. If you knew the gift of God

  251. and who it is that is saying to you,

  252. Give me a drink,

  253. you would have asked him.

  254. And he would have given you living water.

  255. He's saying, Oh, I know who I am.

  256. And if you only knew who I was too.

  257. If you only knew.

  258. You think it's crazy that I,

  259. a male Jewish rabbi,

  260. am asking you, a Samaritan,

  261. for a drink of water?

  262. I got something crazier for you,

  263. he says to her.

  264. I got something crazier for you.

  265. I can give you for free.

  266. You only need to ask.

  267. I can give you living water.

  268. Welling up to eternal life,

  269. a gift from God himself.

  270. And at this point,

  271. the woman thinks Jesus is just talking about

  272. some kind of running water maybe,

  273. some other source.

  274. And she meets Jesus with skepticism.

  275. Verse 11,

  276. Sir, you have nothing to draw water with.

  277. And the well is deep.

  278. Where do you get that living water?

  279. Are you greater than our father Jacob?

  280. He gave us the well and drank from it himself

  281. as did his sons and his livestock.

  282. She's like,

  283. Look, our forefather Jacob gave us this well.

  284. And here you are asking me for a drink.

  285. Bro, you don't even have a bucket.

  286. You don't even have a bucket.

  287. What are you talking about, man?

  288. But Jesus challenges her.

  289. Verse 13,

  290. Everyone who drinks of this water

  291. that Jacob dug up for you

  292. will be thirsty again.

  293. But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him

  294. will never be thirsty again.

  295. The water that I will give him

  296. will become in him a spring.

  297. A spring of water welling up to eternal life.

  298. And at this point,

  299. the skeptical Samaritan woman is just like,

  300. All right, sure.

  301. Sounds great.

  302. Verse 15,

  303. Sir, give me this water then

  304. so that I will not be thirsty

  305. or have to come here to drink water.

  306. That sounds good.

  307. If you really have that kind of living water

  308. that can forever quench my thirst,

  309. sure, I'll take some of that.

  310. I'll take some of that.

  311. And this is where things get really confusing.

  312. Right?

  313. She says,

  314. Yes, I like this living water

  315. that you're offering,

  316. but I kind of don't believe that you have

  317. because you don't even have a bucket.

  318. And then in verse 16,

  319. Jesus says,

  320. Go call your husband and come here.

  321. Like, what is going on in this conversation?

  322. They were just talking about water

  323. and the lack of buckets

  324. and all of a sudden,

  325. we're talking about,

  326. Go call your husband and bring him here.

  327. How in the world did this conversation

  328. go from living water to a husband?

  329. Is Jesus just completely changing the subject?

  330. Well, I think the answer becomes clearer

  331. if we follow the dialogue further.

  332. She says in verse 17,

  333. Look with me.

  334. I have no husband.

  335. She indulges this change of subject.

  336. She says,

  337. I have no husband.

  338. And Jesus says,

  339. You are right,

  340. saying I have no husband.

  341. For you have had five husbands

  342. and the one you now have

  343. is not your husband.

  344. What you have said is true.

  345. What's going on here?

  346. How did it get to this?

  347. Well, I think Jesus is doing,

  348. what he's doing here

  349. is that he's revealing to this woman

  350. her deepest thirst.

  351. Her deepest thirst.

  352. Jesus is saying,

  353. If you want living water,

  354. something that can forever quench

  355. your every thirst

  356. and turn you into a life-giving spring,

  357. welling up to eternal life

  358. for yourself and for others,

  359. you have got to come to terms,

  360. not just with your thirst for this well water.

  361. You have got to come to terms

  362. with your deepest thirst.

  363. And for this woman,

  364. it had to do with something with her past.

  365. Having had five husbands

  366. and now having a man who was not her husband.

  367. And you know,

  368. I don't want to judge

  369. or make too many assumptions about this woman.

  370. I think a lot of preachers and commentators

  371. can easily do that.

  372. We don't know the stories

  373. behind the first five husbands

  374. in this woman's life.

  375. Maybe they all divorced her

  376. each time for reasons out of her control.

  377. Maybe some of them passed away.

  378. Or maybe she really was unfaithful.

  379. To some of them,

  380. maybe to all of them,

  381. maybe she was shamefully promiscuous.

  382. We don't know.

  383. But what we can know

  384. is that her life is not at all

  385. what she had intended or wanted, right?

  386. We can know that at least.

  387. No one gets married

  388. planning to have four more spouses

  389. in their lifetime.

  390. No one gets married

  391. planning to end up with someone

  392. who isn't their spouse.

  393. And we can also know

  394. that her relationship

  395. with this six man at least

  396. who isn't her husband,

  397. it's not what God wants for her.

  398. Right?

  399. A sexual relationship

  400. relating to another person

  401. as a spouse

  402. who is not actually your spouse.

  403. This is not God's will

  404. or design for her

  405. or for any of us.

  406. And I think John Piper

  407. was so right

  408. in his sermon on this passage

  409. when he said that

  410. no one goes through five marriages

  411. and an additional

  412. extramarital relationship

  413. without either starting thirsty

  414. or ending thirsty.

  415. And Jesus was prophetically

  416. revealing this truth to her.

  417. You've got a thirst

  418. and it has to do

  419. with this past of yours

  420. with these five men

  421. and now this six men.

  422. Her pursuit of a husband

  423. and probably a happy home

  424. and a marriage

  425. and whatever supposedly

  426. normative status and lifestyle

  427. that came with such things,

  428. a pursuit not so unlike

  429. many of ours,

  430. it left her thirsty.

  431. It'll leave us thirsty too

  432. if we don't watch out.

  433. And now with this six men

  434. who is not her husband

  435. or maybe we could read it as

  436. who is not her husband,

  437. maybe he's someone else's husband,

  438. she's worse off

  439. than when she'd begun,

  440. thirstier than she's ever been

  441. in more ways than one

  442. at Jacob's famous well

  443. at high noon.

  444. She's here at this well,

  445. she thinks she's gonna satisfy

  446. some kind of thirst,

  447. but Jesus shows her

  448. you are so much thirstier

  449. than you even know.

  450. And you know,

  451. a lot of commentaries

  452. and preachers think

  453. that this woman

  454. tries to change the subject

  455. away from her sex life.

  456. They think that she's trying

  457. to move the conversation

  458. to something maybe

  459. more superficial,

  460. more intellectual,

  461. more theological,

  462. like talking to a prophet

  463. about something

  464. he might be interested in.

  465. But I wanna follow

  466. the commentators

  467. Leslie Newbigin

  468. and Herman Ritterbos

  469. because I think something else

  470. is happening here

  471. when she responds

  472. to Jesus' intimate knowledge

  473. about her five husbands

  474. and her current partner.

  475. Look with me at verse 19.

  476. In verse 19,

  477. when she says,

  478. Sir,

  479. I perceive that you are a prophet.

  480. Our fathers worshipped

  481. on this mountain,

  482. but you say that in Jerusalem

  483. is the place

  484. where people ought to worship.

  485. I don't think, actually,

  486. that she's trying

  487. to deflect Jesus' prophetic words

  488. into her life.

  489. I think she's actually

  490. beginning to acknowledge

  491. who Jesus is.

  492. You're a prophet.

  493. What is a prophet?

  494. I think a lot of times

  495. we think of a prophet

  496. as someone who makes predictions,

  497. but most properly,

  498. a prophet is someone

  499. who speaks the words of God

  500. and opens people's eyes

  501. to their waywardness.

  502. A prophet is someone

  503. who calls people back

  504. into right relationship

  505. with God.

  506. After all,

  507. isn't she trying to

  508. if she's trying

  509. to divert Jesus

  510. into another topic,

  511. seems like she would

  512. have been successful

  513. because Jesus goes on

  514. with this topic, right?

  515. But I think what's really

  516. going on here

  517. is that she has received

  518. the prophetic words

  519. of Jesus

  520. about her deviation

  521. from God

  522. in her sex life.

  523. And recognizing

  524. that Jesus

  525. is at least someone

  526. who speaks the words of God,

  527. she is now bringing to him

  528. a genuine concern

  529. that she now has.

  530. And this is the concern.

  531. She says,

  532. All right,

  533. you're right.

  534. I've been unfaithful

  535. to Yahweh.

  536. I've been unfaithful

  537. to the Torah.

  538. I've been with this man

  539. who is not my husband.

  540. But now,

  541. this is problematic

  542. for me,

  543. Mr. Prophet.

  544. This divide

  545. between us Samaritans

  546. who worship here

  547. and you Jewish people

  548. who worship in Jerusalem,

  549. well,

  550. that's a huge,

  551. huge problem

  552. for me now.

  553. Look,

  554. Mr. Prophet,

  555. I'm already an outcast

  556. here in Samaria.

  557. They won't even let me

  558. worship and offer

  559. sacrifices to atone

  560. for my sins

  561. here on Mount Gerizim.

  562. But if you are right

  563. and the right place

  564. to worship

  565. is where the Jewish people

  566. say in Jerusalem,

  567. well,

  568. how could I,

  569. of all people,

  570. ever deal

  571. with my sin?

  572. I must be hopeless

  573. if you are right.

  574. And at this point,

  575. all hope seems lost

  576. for this woman

  577. at the well.

  578. But the good news

  579. of the gospel

  580. is that with Jesus,

  581. there is always hope

  582. for Jesus is not only

  583. the prophet who reveals

  584. our waywardness,

  585. but he is a prophet

  586. who shows us

  587. the way,

  588. the way to life,

  589. the way to living water,

  590. the way back to God.

  591. He is himself

  592. the very way,

  593. the very truth,

  594. and the very life,

  595. and no one comes

  596. to the Father

  597. except through him.

  598. Listen to what he says

  599. to her.

  600. He doesn't shrug

  601. and say,

  602. it's okay,

  603. as long as you're sincere

  604. and you mean well,

  605. you're close enough,

  606. just have a good spirit

  607. about it,

  608. and you'll be accepted

  609. as a true worshiper

  610. of God.

  611. He's honest.

  612. Verse 22,

  613. he says,

  614. you worship

  615. what you do not know.

  616. We worship

  617. what we know

  618. for salvation

  619. is from the Jews.

  620. Yes,

  621. the Samaritan religion

  622. is a deviation

  623. from the truth.

  624. But he says

  625. in verse 21,

  626. believe me though,

  627. the hour is coming

  628. when neither

  629. on this mountain

  630. nor in Jerusalem

  631. will you worship

  632. the Father.

  633. Verse 23,

  634. the hour is coming

  635. and is now here

  636. when the true worshipers

  637. will worship the Father

  638. by the Spirit

  639. and the truth

  640. for the Father

  641. is seeking such people

  642. to worship him.

  643. Do you realize

  644. what Jesus is saying

  645. to her right here?

  646. This is the gospel.

  647. This is the gospel.

  648. Confronted by her sin

  649. with some man

  650. who is not her own husband,

  651. she sees the wide chasm

  652. between God

  653. whose temple

  654. is in Jerusalem

  655. and herself

  656. as an immoral,

  657. outcasted,

  658. Samaritan woman

  659. and yet here

  660. Jesus is saying

  661. to her,

  662. the hour is coming

  663. and is now here

  664. because I'm here,

  665. because God

  666. is among you,

  667. because the true temple

  668. is here,

  669. I am the true temple

  670. and true worshipers

  671. will worship the Father

  672. not by their own effort,

  673. not by figuring out

  674. a way to sneak

  675. into Jerusalem

  676. as a Samaritan

  677. to offer right sacrifices,

  678. but the way

  679. to be in right relationship

  680. with God

  681. as a true worshiper,

  682. Jesus says,

  683. is by the Spirit

  684. and by the truth,

  685. for the Father

  686. is seeking such people

  687. to worship Him.

  688. Jesus is saying,

  689. you're right,

  690. the chasm is far

  691. too wide

  692. for you to cross

  693. the gap on your own,

  694. but through the Spirit's power

  695. and through me,

  696. the truth,

  697. and because the Father

  698. is the one

  699. actively seeking

  700. and pursuing worshippers,

  701. there is a way

  702. to be right

  703. with God once again,

  704. apart from your

  705. insufficiencies

  706. and despite your

  707. insurmountable obstacles,

  708. it's by the Spirit,

  709. it's by the truth

  710. and by the ever-seeking

  711. Father,

  712. the pursuing Father.

  713. And as this woman

  714. hears the good news

  715. of this hour

  716. that is coming

  717. when she will actually

  718. be able to worship

  719. and be restored

  720. into a right relationship

  721. with Yahweh

  722. by His Spirit

  723. and His truth,

  724. she can't wait.

  725. Wouldn't you believe

  726. that to be good news

  727. for you?

  728. She cannot wait

  729. for that hour

  730. to come

  731. and she says

  732. in verse 25,

  733. I know that Messiah

  734. is coming,

  735. He who is called Christ.

  736. When He comes,

  737. He will tell us

  738. all things.

  739. I can't wait.

  740. And yet to her surprise

  741. and to her delight,

  742. Jesus says to her

  743. in verse 26,

  744. literally in the Greek,

  745. ego emi,

  746. I am.

  747. His very first statement,

  748. I am the one

  749. speaking to you,

  750. I am He.

  751. I am the Messiah

  752. that you're longing for.

  753. And this changes

  754. everything for the woman.

  755. This changes everything

  756. for her.

  757. And she leaves

  758. her water jug behind

  759. and she returns

  760. to her town

  761. and she invites

  762. everyone in the city

  763. to come and see a man

  764. who told her everything

  765. that she had ever done.

  766. And I want to wrap up now

  767. by highlighting

  768. this incredible

  769. response of hers

  770. and I want to talk about

  771. what prompted this response

  772. and then how this is

  773. relevant for us.

  774. Now check it out

  775. in verse 28,

  776. how she leaves her water jug

  777. behind with Jesus.

  778. She just leaves it behind,

  779. leaves it right there

  780. with Him at the well.

  781. I want you to imagine

  782. her love-hate relationship

  783. with that jug of water

  784. before she met Jesus.

  785. On the one hand,

  786. it's the very instrument

  787. that she daily depended upon

  788. to secure her own survival

  789. and to quench her thirst

  790. again and again and again.

  791. She can't live without it.

  792. And yet on the other hand,

  793. she daily strains herself

  794. to carry that heavy jug

  795. back and forth

  796. by the sweat of her own brow,

  797. wishing she never had

  798. to draw water with it

  799. ever again,

  800. wishing for an eternal spring

  801. instead.

  802. Does that sound familiar?

  803. Does that sound like

  804. our lives,

  805. the paradoxical relationship,

  806. right,

  807. between the exhausting grind

  808. of life we seek freedom from,

  809. but also our dependence

  810. upon the grind

  811. for our survival

  812. and meaning?

  813. Maybe we're not so different

  814. from the Samaritan woman,

  815. are we?

  816. Laboring day after day

  817. to quench our thirst,

  818. believing the lie

  819. that Jacob's well

  820. and her water jug

  821. were the best shot

  822. that she had

  823. at survival,

  824. the best shot

  825. that she had

  826. at somewhat quenching

  827. her thirst.

  828. Until boom, right,

  829. she meets Jesus

  830. and her relationship

  831. to the well

  832. and her relationship

  833. to that jug of water

  834. are completely transformed.

  835. And she isn't thirsty

  836. like she was before.

  837. I also want us to notice

  838. how she runs not away,

  839. she doesn't run away

  840. from the town,

  841. but she runs toward

  842. the very town

  843. in which she was an outcast

  844. of promiscuous repute.

  845. this woman who approached

  846. the well as an ashamed loner

  847. is now running toward people.

  848. And this woman

  849. who has had five husbands

  850. and is most recently

  851. with a man who is not

  852. her husband

  853. is now openly telling people

  854. in verse 29,

  855. come and see a man

  856. who told me all

  857. that I ever did.

  858. Who would do that?

  859. Especially with a past

  860. like hers.

  861. Who would highlight that?

  862. Who would broadcast that?

  863. Come and see a man

  864. who told me

  865. how much of an adulterer I was.

  866. How immoral I am.

  867. How much of a sexually

  868. perverse deviant I am.

  869. Someone asked the question,

  870. what was it about

  871. this woman's encounter

  872. with Jesus

  873. that led to

  874. such an incredible response?

  875. Well in short,

  876. I think she found,

  877. I think it's that she found

  878. the man

  879. she'd always needed

  880. but never knew to seek.

  881. Never knew she even wanted.

  882. When she looked

  883. to quench her thirst

  884. with man after man

  885. through marriage and sex

  886. and maybe domestic dreams,

  887. Jesus said,

  888. all you need is me.

  889. All you need is me,

  890. the living water.

  891. You don't need this well.

  892. You don't need that water jug.

  893. You don't need these other men.

  894. All you need is me.

  895. Is that a word

  896. for some of us today

  897. from Jesus to us

  898. that all you need is me?

  899. Because see in Jesus,

  900. she found a man

  901. who loved her

  902. like she'd never been loved before.

  903. Like she'd never been loved before.

  904. A man who though

  905. he had every reason

  906. not to speak to her,

  907. every reason not to enter

  908. into a relationship with her,

  909. she found a man

  910. who wanted to give her

  911. a free gift.

  912. She would just ask.

  913. Right?

  914. Verse 10,

  915. if you knew the gift of God

  916. and who it is

  917. that is saying to you,

  918. give me a drink,

  919. you would have just asked him

  920. and he would have given you

  921. living water.

  922. This is the gospel.

  923. It's free.

  924. You just ask

  925. and he wants to give it to you.

  926. She found a man

  927. who loved her

  928. unconditionally.

  929. A man who knew her

  930. to the bottom

  931. and loved her

  932. to the heavens.

  933. A Jewish man

  934. who though,

  935. knowing everything

  936. she ever did,

  937. still wanted to talk to her.

  938. Still wanted to give her

  939. living water for free.

  940. Still believed that she could be

  941. in right relationship

  942. with God

  943. as a true worshiper.

  944. Still told her

  945. that she was worth pursuing

  946. and not without hope

  947. and that she was even able

  948. to be filled with

  949. the spirit and presence

  950. and power of God.

  951. That God had a plan

  952. for this woman

  953. to make her

  954. a spring of life-giving water

  955. even for others.

  956. In Jesus,

  957. she found a security

  958. and a steadfast love

  959. unlike any

  960. she'd ever experienced.

  961. And all of a sudden,

  962. she was freed.

  963. She was freed

  964. from the judgmental opinions

  965. of others toward her.

  966. Who cares

  967. what the townspeople think

  968. if I have

  969. the steadfast love of God?

  970. That's how

  971. she could run back

  972. into this city.

  973. Come and see

  974. a man who told me

  975. all that I ever did

  976. and still loved me

  977. with all that he is.

  978. And still included me.

  979. And still wanted

  980. to be my savior,

  981. my Messiah.

  982. Do we understand

  983. the liberating power

  984. of Jesus?

  985. The freedom

  986. of this gospel

  987. that is preached

  988. here by the church.

  989. That the good news

  990. that we don't need

  991. what we think we need

  992. and that

  993. the living water

  994. of eternal life

  995. is completely free

  996. for whoever

  997. simply asks.

  998. That this good news

  999. that we can be both

  1000. fully known

1001. in all of our sin

  1002. and fully loved

  1003. by God's

  1004. abundant grace.

  1005. This good news

  1006. that even when

  1007. we are running away,

  1008. the Father is seeking

1009. those who will worship him.

  1010. The good news

  1011. is that we cannot

  1012. outrun his spirit

  1013. or render false

  1014. his truth in Christ.

  1015. Christ's church,

  1016. do we really understand

  1017. this liberating gospel

  1018. of Jesus?

  1019. Can we,

  1020. with the same enthusiasm

  1021. of this woman

  1022. at the well,

  1023. can we invite

  1024. and call others

  1025. with the same vulnerability

  1026. and confidence,

  1027. the same humility

  1028. and boldness,

  1029. can we approach

  1030. our friends

  1031. and our family

  1032. and our colleagues

  1033. and our neighbors

  1034. saying,

1035. come and see a man

  1036. who told me

  1037. everything I ever did.

1038. Come and see a man

  1039. who knows about

  1040. my porn addiction.

1041. Come and see a man

  1042. who knows about

  1043. my aberrant sexual life,

  1044. my marital unfaithfulness,

  1045. my multiple partners

  1046. and flings and affairs.

1047. Come and see a man

  1048. who knows about

  1049. my selfish, greedy heart

  1050. and habits,

1051. how I use my time

1052. and how I use my money.

1053. Come and see a man

1054. who knows all the hatred

1055. and contempt in my heart

  1056. for my spouse,

  1057. my boss,

  1058. my parent,

1059. this or that kind of person.

1060. Come and see a man

  1061. who knows the deepest,

  1062. darkest secrets

  1063. of my past.

1064. Like what if the strength

  1065. of our witness

  1066. didn't depend on

  1067. how much we knew

1068. or how much we were able

  1069. to reason and debate

  1070. and explain our faith

  1071. like Nicodemus surely was?

1072. But what if the strength

  1073. of our witness

  1074. has more to do

  1075. with the magnitude

  1076. of the forgiveness

  1077. and the grace

  1078. poured out upon us

  1079. in Christ?

  1080. What if the people

  1081. in our lives

  1082. knew even just some

  1083. of what Christ's blood

  1084. has atoned for

  1085. in our lives?

  1086. What if the millions

  1087. of people out

  1088. in our world today

  1089. who struggle every day

  1090. with not being enough,

  1091. with not measuring up,

  1092. with guilt upon guilt,

  1093. what if they knew

  1094. the man who though

  1095. knowing all that

  1096. they ever did

  1097. chose not just

1098. to be God among us

  1099. but a thirsty God

  1100. among us?

1101. A thirsty God among us

1102. not just at Jacob's well

  1103. at the sixth hour

1104. but at the sixth hour

  1105. upon the cross.

  1106. Would they

1107. and would we with them

  1108. astounded

  1109. that neither death

  1110. nor life

  1111. nor angels

  1112. nor rulers

  1113. nor things present

  1114. nor things to come

  1115. nor powers

  1116. nor height

  1117. nor death

  1118. nor anything else

  1119. in all of creation

  1120. could ever separate us

1121. from the love of God

  1122. in Christ Jesus

  1123. our Lord?

1124. What if they knew that?

1125. What if they knew that?

  1126. That's what we're saying

  1127. when we say come

  1128. and see

  1129. a man

  1130. who told me all

  1131. that I ever did.

  1132. If they knew that

1133. if we all knew that

  1134. would we all not

  1135. declare

  1136. along with the rest

  1137. of the Samaritans

  1138. from this woman's village

  1139. in verse 42

  1140. that this is indeed

  1141. this is indeed

  1142. the Savior

1143. not just of the Jews

1144. not just of the Samaritan woman

  1145. not just of you

  1146. and me as individuals

  1147. this is the Savior

  1148. of the world.

  1149. Let's pray.
