  5. Today's scripture reading is from the Gospel of John, chapter 4, verses 46 to 54, as printed

    John 4:46–54

  6. in the liturgy.

  7. A reading from the Gospel according to John.

  8. Once more he visited Cana and Galilee, where he had turned the water into wine.

  9. And there was a certain royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum.

  10. When this man heard that Jesus had arrived in Galilee from Judea, he went to him and begged

  11. him to come and heal his son, who was close to death.

  12. Unless you people see signs and wonders, Jesus told him, you will never believe.

  13. The royal official said, Sir, come down before my child dies.

  14. Go, Jesus replied.

  15. Your son will live.

  16. The man took Jesus at his word and departed.

  17. While he was still on the way, his servants met him with the news that his boy was living.

  18. When he inquired as to the time when his son got better, they said to him, yesterday, at

  19. one in the afternoon, the fever left him.

  20. Then the father realized that this was the exact time at which Jesus had said to him, your son

  21. will live.

  22. So he and his whole household believed.

  23. This was the second sign Jesus performed after coming from Judea to Galilee.

  24. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  25. Praise to you, O Christ.

  26. Good morning, Christ Church.

  27. We are continuing in the gospel of John today.

  28. And I have to say that this passage is a hard passage to preach.

  29. Because if you're new with us, about 10 weeks ago, we lost Isaac Lee, a beloved son of Christ

  30. Church.

  31. His first child we baptized in our church.

  32. A pillar in our youth group.

  33. We learned that he was sick.

  34. And some of you came.

  35. We gathered together to pray right up there.

  36. And we begged God to heal him.

  37. And he went to be with the Lord.

  38. And we've been grieving with his family, with his parents and his siblings.

  39. And it's been tough for me to read the story this week about this healing of the sickness

  40. of the son that Jesus pulled back from the brink of death when our experience so recently

  41. in our church was just so different.

  42. So Brian and Sam know this.

  43. I hope Jack and Juliet know it.

  44. I hope all of you know it.

  45. That that's the tension in my heart.

  46. The grief that I bring very close to my heart as I read and preach this text today.

  47. And I hope to circle back to that tension and that grief at the end of the sermon.

  48. But I want to ask, you know, why did John give us this story in his gospel anyway?

  49. The Gospel of John is a book about faith.

  50. And we assume that the Apostle John had been asked many, many times, you know, what is the

  51. Christian faith?

  52. What is the path to faith?

  53. And out of his vast catalog of files that he had on Jesus, John gathered together the

  54. stories that are in this little booklet that he wrote to answer many of the questions that

  55. we have about faith.

  56. John gathers together stories from people who were there at the Jordan River when Jesus

  57. underwent baptism and began to call his first disciples.

  58. He went and gathered the stories of the people who were at that wedding in Cana where Jesus

  59. turned the water into wine.

  60. And he talked to the people and interviewed the folks who were there in Jerusalem at the

  61. temple when Jesus cleared it out.

  62. And he said, you know, I am now the meeting place between God and his people.

  63. He went and interviewed Nicodemus and his family and his students.

  64. And he asked them more.

  65. What did Jesus mean when he said he was the one to bring the new birth from above by the Holy

  66. Spirit?

  67. He went and talked to that woman in Samaria and her whole village that came to discover

  68. Jesus as the living water and the Savior of the world.

  69. That's why he's put all these stories in this little booklet for us.

  70. And he actually tells us this at the end of the book.

  71. If you want to turn to John 20, John chapter 20, verse 30, he tells us the point of writing

    John 20:30

  72. this book.

  73. He says, Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are

  74. not recorded in this book.

  75. But these signs are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God,

  76. and that by believing, you may have life in his name.

  77. So this is a book about belief.

  78. It's a book about faith and the eternal life that comes through faith in Jesus.

  79. And of all the stories that John had on file, why did he choose this one about the healing

  80. of the official son?

  81. Well, you'll notice that that word belief occurs three times here.

  82. In verse 48, Jesus talks about how you will never believe.

  83. Verse 50, it says the man took Jesus at his word.

  84. Or in the Greek, it says he believed Jesus' word.

  85. And then in verse 53, it says, so he and his whole household believed.

  86. The story was written down for us and our questions as a signpost pointing us to what real faith,

  87. deep faith, life-saving, life-giving faith is all about.

  88. And so what I want to talk about a little bit this morning is how Jesus challenges our faith,

  89. gives us his word, and heals our bodies.

  90. That's what I think this story is about.

  91. That Jesus challenges our faith, gives us his word, and heals our bodies.

  92. Let's think for a minute about how Jesus challenges our faith.

  93. This is an urgent moment.

  94. This young man is sick.

  95. He's close to death.

  96. The doctors say it's hopeless.

  97. And agony, powerlessness, and desperation has settled in upon his family and his friends.

  98. And yet there is this glimmer of hope because it's reported that Jesus is back from the Passover at Jerusalem.

  99. And everybody's talking about his power.

  100. And so hearing this news, the boy's father takes courage.

  101. He takes action because there's not a moment to lose.

  102. Life-giving faith starts with reason.

  103. It starts with our minds.

  104. It starts with thinking and our rationality.

  105. Why did this guy go to Jesus?

  106. Because he had heard the reports about Jesus.

  107. We didn't print this verse, but it says in verse 45,

  108. When Jesus arrived in Galilee, the Galileans welcomed him.

  109. They had seen all that he had done in Jerusalem at the Passover festival,

  110. for they also had been there.

  111. And once more, he, Jesus, visited Cana in Galilee,

  112. where he had turned the water into wine.

  113. So Jesus is doing wonderful works, mighty deeds, public miracles,

  114. and the word is beginning to spread.

  115. Perhaps even people that this man knew and trusted,

  116. they're saying, we've seen Jesus with our own eyes.

  117. And this man would not have gone to Jesus

  118. unless he had heard and weighed the evidence of those reports.

  119. So I want to say today that faith moves beyond reason,

  120. but faith always starts with reason.

  121. Most of the things that we believe,

  122. we take on the authority of other people.

  123. We believe the authority of reports from historians and scientists

  124. and sociologists and psychologists and journalists,

  125. and maybe even our uncle posting on Facebook.

  126. But that's, you know, we have to sift through all these things.

  127. We have to sift through these reports

  128. with our reason to see if they're reliable,

  129. to see if they're believable.

  130. Maybe our uncle posting on Facebook

  131. isn't somebody worth listening to after all.

  132. But that's why we go through the Gospels on a regular basis,

  133. because we want you to be able to hear directly

  134. from these eyewitnesses and weigh the reports

  135. and decide for yourself whether or not they're trustworthy.

  136. And that's what this guy does.

  137. He takes the first baby step of faith

  138. based on those reports, and he goes to Jesus.

  139. But Jesus, of course, wants more than that.

  140. And so we hear him say in verse 48,

  141. unless you people see signs and wonders,

  142. you will never believe.

  143. Now, I'm 100% confident

  144. that none of us would like Jesus and the apostles

  145. as much as we think we would like them, right?

  146. Because of stuff like this.

  147. They're constantly saying things that are off-putting,

  148. that disturb us and make us uncomfortable

  149. and maybe even offend us.

  150. No writer of fiction that's aware of Jesus' compassion

  151. would come up with this sharp rejoinder

  152. that seems harsh and maybe even cruel,

  153. because here's this desperate man in agony,

  154. and he's begging, please come and heal my dear son

  155. who's dying.

  156. Why does Jesus respond to his first baby step of faith

  157. like this?

  158. Well, first of all, Jesus says you, plural, not singular,

  159. which kind of softens the blow.

  160. He says you all, y'all, you people are all the same

  161. unless you see, you'll never really believe.

  162. And Jesus is not here against the need

  163. for proper and substantial evidence

  164. to be presented to our rational mind.

  165. He's not saying you just need to be persuaded

  166. without any facts, because we're told in verse 54

  167. that this was the second sign Jesus performed

  168. after coming from Judea to Galilee.

  169. Jesus knows that we need signs,

  170. and that's why he gives us signs.

  171. So what is Jesus challenging here?

  172. I think he's challenging superficiality.

  173. I think he's challenging shallow, surface-level faith.

  174. Think to Jesus teaching on the parable of the sower,

  175. and he talks about how those seeds are scattered

  176. in that second type of soil,

  177. and what happens is they sprout up quickly,

  178. and it seems like faith,

  179. but there are actually no roots.

  180. There's no depth.

  181. It's not gone to the inmost heart.

  182. It's shallow.

  183. And so Jesus says when the heat comes,

  184. when the trouble comes,

  185. that shallow faith becomes scorched and withered

  186. and falls away because it has no roots,

  187. and therefore it can bear no fruit.

  188. And Jesus there in his teaching

  189. is helping us distinguish

  190. between superficial faith and deep faith,

  191. between temporary faith and lasting faith.

  192. And I think what he's saying to this guy in verse 48 is,

  193. have you come to me because you think

  194. that I'm just a conduit of power

  195. that responds to foxhole prayers?

  196. Do you think I'm a Messiah

  197. who just performs on-demand miracles?

  198. Have you come to use my supernatural power

  199. to get what you want and what will benefit you?

  200. Or do you want me?

  201. Do you want a relationship with me

  202. whether I heal your son or not?

  203. See, Jesus is saying,

  204. I want a belief.

  205. I want a faith that's not about the signs

  206. and not about what I can do for you.

  207. I want a belief and a faith

  208. that moves toward what all the signs are pointing to,

  209. namely, me.

  210. This is challenging, isn't it?

  211. Jesus is saying,

  212. I don't just want to physically heal your son,

  213. I want to spiritually heal you.

  214. And it's a massive challenge.

  215. It's a massive test.

  216. He's drawing this guy out.

  217. He's seeing what's in his heart.

  218. And what comes out of his heart next

  219. is absolutely amazing.

  220. Verse 49,

  221. the royal official said,

  222. Sir,

  223. sir,

  224. come down before my child dies.

  225. Sir,

  226. he's respectful.

  227. He's humble.

  228. Come down, please.

  229. He's dogged and persistent.

  230. He prayed once

  231. and Jesus put him off.

  232. And so he doesn't stop praying.

  233. He keeps praying persistently,

  234. coming back.

  235. That's his second step of faith.

  236. And I wonder if you're ready today

  237. wherever you're coming from

  238. to take that first baby step of faith,

  239. to just look directly at the evidence for yourself,

  240. to weigh these reports about Jesus.

  241. If you've never done that,

  242. we're so glad that you're here.

  243. And we would invite you to come

  244. on Wednesday nights to Christianity Explored.

  245. We're looking at the Gospel of Mark.

  246. It's a gospel.

  247. You can read it in about 45 minutes

  248. over a cup of coffee.

  249. And we're reading it,

  250. asking questions,

  251. watching videos,

  252. engaging discussions about it.

  253. If you can't join us on Wednesday nights,

  254. we encourage you to join in

  255. to our daily Bible reading plan

  256. in the Gospel of John

  257. and just see for yourself

  258. whether this eyewitness testimony

  259. about Jesus is reliable,

  260. trustworthy,

  261. and believable.

  262. But if you've taken that first baby step of faith,

  263. then are you ready to take

  264. that second baby step of faith,

  265. to move beyond superficial interest in Jesus

  266. and going to Jesus

  267. only for the benefits that he gives you?

  268. Maybe some of you have said,

  269. you know, I tried to pray once

  270. and it didn't work,

  271. so I stopped.

  272. Or I went to Jesus

  273. and I didn't really like what he said back,

  274. so I quit going.

  275. Are you willing to wrestle with Jesus like this man?

  276. Are you willing to invest

  277. in having a relationship with Jesus

  278. even when he doesn't engage on your terms

  279. or say the things you want him to say

  280. or play by your rules?

  281. That's the second step of life-giving faith.

  282. You guys with me so far?

  283. Jesus is challenging.

  284. And Jesus challenges our faith.

  285. But more than that,

  286. Jesus not only challenges our faith,

  287. he gives us his word.

  288. He gives us his word.

  289. How does Jesus respond

  290. to this man's second prayer request?

  291. Well, he tells him in verse 50,

  292. go, your son will live.

  293. Now we know more than this man knows,

  294. but this is actually a higher challenge

  295. than the first challenge that Jesus gave.

  296. Because this man says,

  297. please Jesus,

  298. come with me

  299. because you need to be physically present

  300. to bring healing.

  301. And if you're not there,

  302. then there's no hope.

  303. And Jesus makes this astounding,

  304. astonishing claim.

  305. He says, you know,

  306. I don't need to go with you

  307. because I'm so powerful

  308. that I don't even need to be there.

  309. I can just heal with a word.

  310. And I give you my word.

  311. I give you my word of honor.

  312. I promise that I'll do it.

  313. Who else can claim

  314. that kind of ability

  315. and authority

  316. to give life?

  317. Who can heal disease

  318. and save from death

  319. at a distance

  320. and with only a word?

  321. I would say only God.

  322. Only God can do that.

  323. Only the God who says,

  324. let there be light

  325. and there was light.

  326. Only the God who has

  327. light-making power

  328. in his word.

  329. And that's what Jesus is claiming here.

  330. He's claiming creator-like,

  331. life-giving power.

  332. You don't need my physical presence

  333. to experience my power.

  334. I can heal my sick,

  335. sinful,

  336. broken,

  337. dying creatures

  338. that I created

  339. from anywhere

  340. with a word.

  341. Now you gotta remember

  342. that John is writing

  343. his gospel

  344. to people

  345. who can't see Jesus.

  346. Jesus is resurrected

  347. and he's ascended

  348. into heaven

  349. and people around John

  350. are saying,

  351. how can we put our faith

  352. in Jesus?

  353. How can we put our trust

  354. in a Jesus

  355. that we cannot see?

  356. And this story

  357. is here to tell us

  358. that we don't need

  359. to have the physical presence

  360. of Jesus

  361. to become a believer.

  362. what we need

  363. is the word

  364. of Christ.

  365. And we have

  366. many of the words

  367. of Christ

  368. in our Bibles.

  369. Right?

  370. The question is,

  371. do we read them?

  372. Do we even know them?

  373. And then,

  374. if we know them,

  375. will we believe them?

  376. And will we trust

  377. these promises

  378. and will we obey

  379. these commands?

  380. That's what faith

  381. is about.

  382. Jesus challenges

  383. and he tests

  384. this man a second time

  385. and basically

  386. he's saying to himself,

  387. okay,

  388. if Jesus can't do

  389. what he just said

  390. he can do,

  391. if he does not have

  392. the power

  393. that no one else

  394. has ever claimed

  395. to have,

  396. then my son

  397. has no hope.

  398. So am I going to trust

  399. my present

  400. and my future?

  401. Am I going to trust

  402. my son's life

  403. to this incredible

  404. claim of Jesus

  405. that he's the life giver?

  406. Remember,

  407. imagine,

  408. imagine the scene

  409. where he to arrive home

  410. and his wife

  411. and his servants

  412. are like,

  413. where's the healer?

  414. You had one job.

  415. Where's the healer?

  416. I mean,

  417. if he goes home

  418. with only a word

  419. of promise,

  420. how foolish

  421. is he going to look

  422. in the eyes

  423. of everybody

  424. in his household

  425. and in his village?

  426. And how many of us

  427. are super excited

  428. to look like a fool

  429. in the eyes of others?

  430. But friends,

  431. that's what faith is about.

  432. Faith means

  433. taking the risk

  434. of looking foolish.

  435. And that's the risk

  436. he takes.

  437. In verse 50,

  438. it says,

  439. the man took Jesus

  440. at his word

  441. and departed.

  442. The man believed

  443. Jesus' word

  444. and he went home.

  445. That's the third

  446. baby step

  447. of faith.

  448. Faith is taking Jesus

  449. at his word

  450. and then living your life

  451. according to it.

  452. He acts.

  453. He moves.

  454. Jesus speaks

  455. and he begins

  456. to walk

  457. home.

  458. Faith is going

  459. each morning

  460. to Jesus' teachings,

  461. to his words,

  462. to his promises,

  463. to his commands

  464. and saying

  465. to ourselves,

  466. these are going

  467. to be the very words

  468. by which I live

  469. my life.

  470. And when you

  471. do that,

  472. you know

  473. that like this man,

  474. you're moving

  475. from rationalistic belief

  476. that Jesus exists

  477. to a personal

  478. trust in Jesus.

  479. You're moving

  480. from intellectual

  481. assent

  482. that Jesus

  483. has power

  484. to actually

  485. entrusting

  486. the details

  487. of your life

  488. to him.

  489. Right?

  490. You're moving

  491. from knowing

  492. about Jesus

  493. to staking

  494. your life

  495. on Jesus.

  496. Does that make sense?

  497. You're moving

  498. from saying,

  499. okay,

  500. that chair

  501. will probably

  502. hold me up

  503. if I took the risk

  504. to sit down

  505. in it

  506. to actually

  507. going over

  508. and putting

  509. the full weight

  510. of your life

  511. on that chair

  512. and maybe

  513. it won't

  514. hold you up.

  515. Maybe you'll

  516. fall down.

  517. Maybe you'll

  518. look like a fool

  519. or maybe

  520. you won't.

  521. That's what

  522. faith is all

  523. about.

  524. There are many,

  525. many nominal

  526. Christians,

  527. right?

  528. And nominal

  529. Christians believe

  530. some of the stuff

  531. that they like

  532. in Christianity,

  533. kind of conveniently

  534. they pick out

  535. the things that

  536. sort of fit

  537. with what they

  538. already believed,

  539. but they're not

  540. actually trusting

  541. their life

  542. to Jesus.

  543. Tons and tons

  544. of people

  545. believe in Jesus,

  546. but what do they

  547. trust?

  548. They trust their

  549. money.

  550. They trust

  551. themselves.

  552. They trust a whole

  553. host of things

  554. other than Jesus

  555. and Jesus is saying,

  556. I want you to

  557. trust your whole

  558. life to my

  559. claims and

  560. to my words

  561. and to my

  562. promises.

  563. And when this

  564. man puts

  565. Christ's word

  566. to the test

  567. and he found

  568. the result

  569. that Jesus

  570. is the one

  571. who gives

  572. life,

  573. it pushed

  574. him all

  575. the way

  576. to that

  577. fourth

  578. baby step

  579. of faith

  580. and he

  581. became a

  582. convinced

  583. and convicted

  584. believer

  585. with his

  586. whole household

  587. it says.

  588. So are you

  589. ready today

  590. to take that

  591. third baby

  592. step of faith

  593. where you

  594. don't just

  595. say that

  596. you believe

  597. in Jesus

  598. but you

  599. actually listen

  600. to his

  601. words every

  602. day,

  603. that you

  604. make it a

  605. priority.

  606. First thing

  607. in the morning

  608. to chew

  609. and to

  610. digest

  611. his

  612. words

  613. and then

  614. to ask

  615. God

  616. help me

  617. believe

  618. these

  619. words

  620. in such

  621. a way

  622. that I

  623. change my

  624. life

  625. according

  626. to them

  627. no matter

  628. how foolish

  629. that might

  630. make me

  631. seem in the

  632. eyes

  633. of others.

  634. Jesus will

  635. kind of say

  636. this again

  637. at the end

  638. of the gospel

  639. when he's

  640. talking to

  641. doubting Thomas

  642. in John 20

  643. and he

  644. says

  645. Thomas

  646. blessed

  647. are those

  648. who have

  649. not seen

  650. and yet

  651. who have

  652. believed

  653. on the

  654. basis of

  655. my word

  656. on the

  657. basis of

  658. the testimony

  659. and the

  660. word about

  661. me

  662. blessed

  663. are those

  664. who have

  665. not seen

  666. and yet

  667. have

  668. believed.

  669. Jesus

  670. challenges

  671. our faith

  672. he gives

  673. us his

  674. word

  675. and lastly

  676. he heals

  677. our bodies

  678. Jesus heals

  679. our bodies

  680. here he is

  681. in Cana

  682. and he says

  683. to this

  684. father

  685. go home

  686. to Capernaum

  687. there's nothing

  688. to fear

  689. your son

  690. lives

  691. the time

  692. is about

  693. one o'clock

  694. in the

  695. afternoon

  696. in the

  697. blazing

  698. heat

  699. in the

  700. middle

  701. of the

  702. day

  703. it's

  704. so hot

  705. back

  706. at this

  707. man's

  708. home

  709. that his

  710. wife

  711. we're

  712. sure

  713. is working

  714. furiously

  715. to

  716. help bring

  717. down

  718. the raging

  719. fever

  720. that's

  721. about

  722. to

  723. take

  724. the

  725. life

  726. of

  727. her

  728. son

  729. the

  730. sun

  731. is

  732. scorching

  733. their

  734. little

  735. house

  736. is

  737. boiling

  738. there's

  739. no

  740. air

  741. conditioning

  742. there's

  743. no

  744. bathtub

  745. there's

  746. no

  747. running

  748. water

  749. mom

  750. keeps

  751. going

  752. back

  753. and

  754. forth

  755. to get

  756. more

  757. water

  758. to bring

  759. his

  760. temperature

  761. down

  762. and she

  763. goes

  764. out

  765. one

  766. more

  767. time

  768. and she

  769. comes

  770. back

  771. and

  772. amazingly

  773. he's

  774. completely

  775. and

  776. instantly

  777. healthy

  778. 98.6

  779. degrees

  780. and she

  781. is

  782. amazed

  783. and so

  784. she sends

  785. her servants

  786. to her

  787. husband

  788. with the

  789. glorious

  790. news

  791. that her

  792. son

  793. is

  794. perfectly

  795. well

  796. and the

  797. man

  798. begins

  799. to cross

  800. examine

  801. the

  802. servants

  803. saying

  804. well

  805. when

  806. did he

  807. recover

  808. and they're

  809. like

  810. well

  811. we think

  812. it was

  813. about

  814. one

  815. o'clock

  816. in the

  817. afternoon

  818. yesterday

  819. in the

  820. heat

  821. of the

  822. day

  823. and the

  824. man

  825. thinks

  826. that's

  827. when

  828. Jesus

  829. gave

  830. me

  831. his

  832. word

  833. of

  834. promise

  835. verse

  836. 53

  837. then

  838. the

  839. father

  840. realized

  841. that

  842. this

  843. was

  844. the

  845. exact

  846. time

  847. at

  848. which

  849. Jesus

  850. had

  851. said

  852. to

  853. him

  854. your

  855. son

  856. will

  857. live

  858. and

  859. so

  860. he

  861. and

  862. his

  863. whole

  864. household

  865. believed

  866. he

  867. now

  868. has

  869. taken

  870. that

  871. fourth

  872. baby

  873. step

  874. to

  875. a

  876. conviction

  877. he's

  878. convinced

  879. that

  880. Jesus

  881. gives

  882. life

  883. and so

  884. he

  885. has

  886. to

  887. share

  888. that

  889. conviction

  890. with

  891. all

  892. who

  893. are

  894. near

  895. and dear

  896. with

  897. him

  898. in his

  899. household

  900. and in

  901. his

  902. village

  903. who

  904. also

  905. come

  906. to

  907. believe

  908. the

  909. thing

  910. that's

  911. been on

  912. my

  913. heart

  914. all

  915. week

  916. as

  917. I've

  918. been

  919. thinking

  920. about

  921. this

  922. healing

  923. is

  924. that

  925. there

  926. were

  927. many

  928. in

  929. Israel

  930. with

  931. sick

  932. bodies

  933. that

  934. Jesus

  935. did

  936. not

  937. heal

  938. I

  939. think

  940. of

  941. Jairus'

  942. daughter

  943. Jairus

  944. was the

  945. synagogue

  946. ruler

  947. he was

  948. the father

  949. of a

  950. 12 year

  951. old

  952. daughter

  953. who

  954. was

  955. also

  956. dying

  957. he

  958. comes

  959. and he

  960. desperately

  961. begs

  962. Jesus

  963. to come

  964. and to

  965. heal

  966. and if

  967. you know

  968. the story

  969. Jesus

  970. delays

  971. and because

  972. Jesus

  973. delays

  974. this

  975. daughter

  976. like

  977. many

  978. others

  979. died

  980. but

  981. Jesus

  982. says

  983. to this

  984. man

  985. to

  986. Jairus

  987. he

  988. says

  989. do

  990. not

  991. be

  992. afraid

  993. just

  994. believe

  995. now

  996. anyone

  997. who

  998. says

  999. that

  1000. is

  1001. either

  1002. spectacularly

  1003. misguided

  1004. or

  1005. is

  1006. supremely

  1007. confident

  1008. in his

  1009. own

  1010. power

  1011. and

  1012. authority

  1013. don't

  1014. be

  1015. afraid

  1016. just

  1017. believe

  1018. and

  1019. Jesus

  1020. will

  1021. show

  1022. this

  1023. particular

  1024. grief

  1025. stricken

  1026. family

  1027. his

  1028. power

  1029. over

  1030. death

  1031. when

  1032. he

  1033. says

  1034. to

  1035. her

  1036. little

  1037. girl

  1038. rise

  1039. up

  1040. and

  1041. he

  1042. takes

  1043. her

  1044. the hand

  1045. of her

  1046. corpse

  1047. and

  1048. he

  1049. wakes

  1050. her

  1051. up

  1052. like

  1053. she's

  1054. been

  1055. in

  1056. a

  1057. nap

  1058. the

  1059. same

  1060. thing

  1061. happens

  1062. with

  1063. Jesus

  1064. good

  1065. buddy

  1066. Lazarus

  1067. he gets

  1068. this

  1069. urgent

  1070. message

  1071. Lord

  1072. the

  1073. one

  1074. you

  1075. love

  1076. so

  1077. much

  1078. is

  1079. sick

  1080. and

  1081. what

  1082. does

  1083. Jesus

  1084. do

  1085. he

  1086. delays

  1087. he

  1088. delays

  1089. again

  1090. and

  1091. his

  1092. friend

  1093. dies

  1094. and

  1095. these

  1096. bewildered

  1097. sisters

  1098. say

  1099. to

  1100. Jesus

  1101. Lord

  1102. if

  1103. only

  1104. you'd

  1105. been

  1106. here

  1107. our

  1108. brother

  1109. would

  1110. not

  1111. have

  1112. died

  1113. and

  1114. when

  1115. Jesus

  1116. sees

  1117. their

  1118. tears

  1119. he

  1120. begins

  1121. to

  1122. weep

  1123. too

  1124. why

  1125. because

  1126. I

  1127. think

  1128. he's

  1129. looking

  1130. around

  1131. at

  1132. all

  1133. the

  1134. people

  1135. he's

  1136. not

  1137. going

  1138. to

  1139. heal

  1140. all

  1141. the

  1142. people

  1143. whose

  1144. bodies

  1145. he's

  1146. not

  1147. going

  1148. to

  1149. raise

  1150. up

  1151. I

  1152. think

  1153. he's

  1154. looking

  1155. down

  1156. the

  1157. corridors

  1158. of

  1159. time

  1160. through

  1161. the

  1162. centuries

  1163. to

  1164. all

  1165. of

  1166. our

  1167. tombs

  1168. all

  1169. of

  1170. our

  1171. funerals

  1172. all

  1173. the

  1174. bodies

  1175. of

  1176. his

  1177. beloved

  1178. people

  1179. he's

  1180. looking

  1181. he

  1182. cannot

  1183. hold

  1184. back

  1185. his

  1186. own

  1187. tears

  1188. because

  1189. he's

  1190. looking

  1191. at

  1192. all

  1193. of

  1194. his

  1195. loved

  1196. ones

  1197. who

  1198. are

  1199. going

  1200. to

  1201. lose

  1202. their

  1203. loved

  1204. ones

  1205. but

  1206. Jesus

  1207. in

  1208. that

  1209. moment

  1210. he

  1211. gives

  1212. this

  1213. particular

  1214. grief

  1215. stricken

  1216. family

  1217. a

  1218. sign

  1219. that

  1220. he

  1221. has

  1222. the

  1223. power

  1224. over

  1225. death

  1226. and

  1227. so

  1228. Lazarus

  1229. come

  1230. out

  1231. you

  1232. see

  1233. Jesus

  1234. when

  1235. this

  1236. father

  1237. came

  1238. to

  1239. Jesus

  1240. Jesus

  1241. did

  1242. not

  1243. come

  1244. on

  1245. the

  1246. father's

  1247. terms

  1248. but

  1249. he

  1250. did

  1251. decide

  1252. for

  1253. whatever

  1254. reason

  1255. to

  1256. heal

  1257. his

  1258. son

  1259. and

  1260. yet

  1261. in

  1262. these

  1263. other

  1264. stories

  1265. Jesus

  1266. did

  1267. not

  1268. come

  1269. immediately

  1270. when

  1271. Jairus

  1272. said

  1273. it's

  1274. urgent

  1275. when

  1276. Mary

  1277. and

  1278. Martha

  1279. said

  1280. please

  1281. Lord

  1282. come

  1283. it's

  1284. urgent

  1285. Jesus

  1286. did

  1287. not

  1288. come

  1289. he

  1290. delayed

  1291. and

  1292. people

  1293. died

  1294. many

  1295. of you

  1296. know

  1297. that

  1298. this

  1299. happened

  1300. to

  1301. my

  1302. mom

  1303. my

  1304. mom

  1305. got

  1306. sick

  1307. when

  1308. I

  1309. was

  1310. 19

  1311. years

  1312. old

  1313. and

  1314. that

  1315. was

  1316. the

  1317. first

  1318. major

  1319. problem

  1320. of my

  1321. life

  1322. and

  1323. like

  1324. this

  1325. man

  1326. I

  1327. went

  1328. to

  1329. Jesus

  1330. many

  1331. of

  1332. us

  1333. many

  1334. many

  1335. people

  1336. went

  1337. to

  1338. Jesus

  1339. and

  1340. we

  1341. begged

  1342. Jesus

  1343. we

  1344. said

  1345. please

  1346. Lord

  1347. come

  1348. for

  1349. she's

  1350. she's

  1351. gonna

  1352. die

  1353. please

  1354. heal

  1355. her

  1356. and

  1357. for

  1358. whatever

  1359. reason

  1360. Jesus

  1361. chose

  1362. not

  1363. to

  1364. do

  1365. things

  1366. on

  1367. our

  1368. terms

  1369. he

  1370. delayed

  1371. and

  1372. she

  1373. died

  1374. at

  1375. the

  1376. age

  1377. of

  1378. 50

  1379. right

  1380. I'm

  1381. gonna

  1382. blink

  1383. and

  1384. be

  1385. 50

  1386. when

  1387. Isaac

  1388. got

  1389. sick

  1390. we

  1391. came

  1392. together

  1393. and

  1394. we

  1395. said

  1396. Lord

  1397. Jesus

  1398. please

  1399. we're

  1400. begging

  1401. you

  1402. please

  1403. heal

  1404. this

  1405. beloved

  1406. young

  1407. man

  1408. and

  1409. for

  1410. whatever

  1411. reason

  1412. Jesus

  1413. chose

  1414. not

  1415. to

  1416. do

  1417. that

  1418. and

  1419. he

  1420. delayed

  1421. and

  1422. Isaac

  1423. died

  1424. at

  1425. the

  1426. age

  1427. of

  1428. 16

  1429. and

  1430. so

  1431. I

  1432. want

  1433. to

  1434. say

  1435. that

  1436. it's

  1437. so

  1438. right

  1439. for

  1440. us

  1441. to

  1442. ask

  1443. the

  1444. healer

  1445. for

  1446. healing

  1447. when

  1448. we

  1449. need

  1450. healing

  1451. have

  1452. any

  1453. of

  1454. you

  1455. ever

  1456. known

  1457. people

  1458. who've

  1459. been

  1460. healed

  1461. by

  1462. Jesus

  1463. anybody

  1464. asked

  1465. for

  1466. healing

  1467. we

  1468. got

  1469. too

  1470. many

  1471. Presbyterians

  1472. in

  1473. here

  1474. we

  1475. okay

  1476. a few

  1477. I

  1478. see

  1479. a few

  1480. Pentecostals

  1481. and I

  1482. pray

  1483. okay

  1484. hands

  1485. are

  1486. coming

  1487. up

  1488. wow

  1489. okay

  1490. um

  1491. yeah

  1492. we

  1493. need

  1494. we

  1495. need

  1496. more

  1497. of

  1498. that

  1499. but

  1500. think

  1501. about

  1502. it

  1503. this

  1504. man's

  1505. son

  1506. who

  1507. Jesus

  1508. healed

  1509. he

  1510. eventually

  1511. died

  1512. and

  1513. Jairus

  1514. his

  1515. daughter

  1516. would

  1517. die

  1518. again

  1519. Lazarus

  1520. would

  1521. die

  1522. again

  1523. all

  1524. of

  1525. us

  1526. we

  1527. might

  1528. experience

  1529. healing

  1530. but

  1531. we're

  1532. gonna

  1533. die

  1534. we're

  1535. gonna

  1536. die

  1537. maybe

  1538. when

  1539. we're

  1540. young

  1541. Jesus

  1542. in

  1543. every

  1544. case

  1545. for

  1546. all

  1547. of

  1548. us

  1549. he's

  1550. gonna

  1551. delay

  1552. his

  1553. coming

  1554. that

  1555. could

  1556. save

  1557. us

  1558. from

  1559. death

  1560. but

  1561. we

  1562. know

  1563. we

  1564. know

  1565. that

  1566. Jesus

  1567. has

  1568. given

  1569. us

  1570. his

  1571. word

  1572. that

  1573. he

  1574. has

  1575. the

  1576. power

  1577. over

  1578. sickness

  1579. and

  1580. death

  1581. that

  1582. he

  1583. is

  1584. the

  1585. one

  1586. who

  1587. gives

  1588. healing

  1589. and

  1590. life

  1591. and

  1592. we

  1593. very

  1594. much

  1595. are

  1596. like

  1597. this

  1598. father

  1599. whom

  1600. Jesus

  1601. sends

  1602. back

  1603. on his

  1604. anguished

  1605. way

  1606. to walk

  1607. 20 miles

  1608. back home

  1609. on that lonely

  1610. road

  1611. by himself

  1612. with only

  1613. Jesus

  1614. word

  1615. that he

  1616. has life

  1617. in the face

  1618. of death

  1619. and that's how we're

  1620. called to live

  1621. it looks foolish

  1622. it looks beyond

  1623. the bounds

  1624. of possibility

  1625. but we know

  1626. more than this man

  1627. knew

  1628. because we have

  1629. the final sign

  1630. that Jesus gave us

  1631. at the end

  1632. of this gospel

  1633. that we're

  1634. going to talk

  1635. about

  1636. on Easter

  1637. Sunday

  1638. in John

    John 20 chapter mention

  1639. chapter 20

  1640. it says

  1641. that very

  1642. early

  1643. on that

  1644. third

  1645. morning

  1646. after Jesus

  1647. own

  1648. death

  1649. the son

  1650. of God

  1651. died

  1652. but very

  1653. early

  1654. on that

  1655. third

  1656. morning

  1657. after his

  1658. death

  1659. Jesus

  1660. rose

  1661. up

  1662. in the

  1663. darkness

  1664. of night

  1665. in the

  1666. power

  1667. of an

  1668. endless

  1669. life

  1670. so friends

  1671. at present

  1672. Jesus

  1673. sometimes

  1674. and often

  1675. times

  1676. he doesn't

  1677. respond

  1678. on our

  1679. terms

  1680. and Jesus

  1681. probably

  1682. for every

  1683. one of us

  1684. is going

  1685. to delay

  1686. his coming

  1687. that would

  1688. prevent us

  1689. from death

  1690. but make

  1691. no mistake

  1692. for those

  1693. of us

  1694. who believe

  1695. all of his

  1696. life giving

  1697. power is going

  1698. to come

  1699. to us

  1700. in the end

  1701. he will

  1702. heal

  1703. our bodies

  1704. he will

  1705. raise us

  1706. up

  1707. to

  1708. indestructible

  1709. life

  1710. he will

  1711. make

  1712. all things

  1713. new

  1714. that is what

  1715. all these

  1716. signs of

  1717. healing

  1718. all these

  1719. signs of

  1720. resurrection

  1721. are pointing

  1722. us to

  1723. it's how

  1724. John begins

  1725. his gospel

  1726. in John 1

  1727. 4 he says

  1728. in Jesus

  1729. was life

  1730. and that

  1731. life

  1732. was the

  1733. light

  1734. of all

  1735. people

  1736. the life

  1737. that's in

  1738. Jesus

  1739. is the

  1740. hope

  1741. of the

  1742. world

  1743. I want

  1744. to leave

  1745. you with

  1746. this famous

  1747. passage in

  1748. the Bible

  1749. about God's

  1750. people who

  1751. live by faith

  1752. and this

  1753. wonderful

  1754. definition of

  1755. faith

  1756. Hebrews 11

  1757. you ready

  1758. for it

  1759. it says

  1760. now faith

  1761. is the

  1762. assurance

  1763. of things

  1764. hoped for

  1765. and the

  1766. conviction

  1767. of things

  1768. we cannot

  1769. see

  1770. now faith

  1771. is the

  1772. assurance

  1773. of things

  1774. hoped for

  1775. and the

  1776. conviction

  1777. of things

  1778. not seen

  1779. and after

  1780. going through

  1781. example

  1782. after example

  1783. after example

  1784. of people

  1785. who live

  1786. by faith

  1787. it says

  1788. this

  1789. all these

  1790. people

  1791. were still

  1792. living by

  1793. faith

  1794. when they

  1795. died

  1796. they did

  1797. not receive

  1798. the things

  1799. promised

  1800. they only

  1801. saw them

  1802. and welcomed

  1803. them from a

  1804. distance

  1805. admitting

  1806. that they

  1807. were foreigners

  1808. strangers

  1809. and strangers

  1810. on earth

  1811. and that's

  1812. the question

  1813. for us

  1814. will we

  1815. have this

  1816. kind of

  1817. assured

  1818. and convicted

  1819. faith

  1820. even in the

  1821. face of

  1822. certain death

  1823. a faith that

  1824. sees that

  1825. coming day

  1826. in the future

  1827. when Jesus

  1828. will heal

  1829. and resurrect

  1830. our bodies

  1831. to be like

  1832. his body

  1833. that's what

  1834. it means

  1835. to be a

  1836. Christian

  1837. that's what

  1838. it means

  1839. to be a

  1840. church

  1841. that's what

  1842. it means

  1843. to live

  1844. by

  1845. faith

  1846. may it be

  1847. so

  1848. among us

  1849. in the name

  1850. of the Father

  1851. Son and Holy

  1852. Spirit

  1853. Amen
