  5. Good morning. My name is Brian Lee, and my family and I are part of the Alameda Community Group.

  6. The Lord's word for us this morning comes from the Gospel according to John, chapter 11, verses 17 to 53.

    John 11:17–53

  7. On his arrival, Jesus found that Lazarus had already been in the tomb for four days.

  8. Now Bethany was less than two miles from Jerusalem,

  9. and many Jews had come to Martha and Mary to comfort them in the loss of their brother.

  10. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet him, but Mary stayed at home.

  11. Lord, Martha said to Jesus, if you had been here, my brother would not have died,

  12. but I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.

  13. Jesus said to her, your brother will rise again.

  14. Martha answered, I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

  15. Jesus said to her, I am the resurrection and the life.

  16. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die.

  17. And whoever lives by believing in me will never die.

  18. Do you believe this?

  19. Yes, Lord, she replied.

  20. I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.

  21. After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside.

  22. The teacher is here, she said, and is asking for you.

  23. When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to him.

  24. Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met him.

  25. When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house comforting her noticed how quickly she got up and went out,

  26. they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.

  27. When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw him, she fell at his feet and said,

  28. Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  29. When Jesus saw her weeping and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping,

  30. he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled.

  31. Where have you laid him? he asked.

  32. Come and see, Lord, they replied.

  33. Jesus wept.

  34. Then the Jews said, see how he loved him.

  35. But some of them said, could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?

  36. Jesus, once more deeply moved, came to the tomb.

  37. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.

  38. Take away the stone, he said.

  39. But Lord, said Martha, the sister of the dead man,

  40. by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.

  41. Then Jesus said,

  42. did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?

  43. So they took away the stone.

  44. Then Jesus looked up and said,

  45. Father, I thank you that you have heard me.

  46. I knew that you always hear me.

  47. But I said this for the benefit of the people standing here,

  48. that they may believe that you sent me.

  49. When he had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice,

  50. Lazarus, come out.

  51. The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen and a cloth around his face.

  52. Jesus said to them, take off the grave clothes and let him go.

  53. So from that day on, they plotted to take his life.

  54. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  55. Praise to you, O Christ.

  56. Good morning, Christ Church.

  57. Thank you so much, Brian.

  58. If you're new with us, on November 14th, we commended Isaac, Brian, and Seung-yoon's son into the Lord's hands

  59. as he passed from this world into the world to come.

  60. And our hearts just broke that Sunday morning.

  61. And I threw the sermon that I had prepared into the trash.

  62. And we just stumbled our way through this text about the death of Jesus' friend.

  63. And so we love you guys.

  64. And it's not often you get to preach the same text twice in a year.

  65. Fortunately, this one is a rich one.

  66. And I hope I can bring something fresh and helpful to you today.

  67. It's the first Sunday in Lent.

  68. And those Ash Wednesday words, those sober words, ring especially true these days.

  69. Remember that you're dust, and to the dust you shall return.

  70. There's nothing like a once-in-a-hundred-year killer virus to remind us of our frailty,

  71. where it's felt at times like nature itself is trying to destroy us.

  72. And then there's nothing like, you know, national vitriol just spewing

  73. and internationally rockets launching to make us conclude that if nature can't kill us,

  74. then we certainly are capable of doing it ourselves.

  75. And, you know, there's one place.

  76. Sorry, this thing doesn't want to fit my ear this morning.

  77. I don't know what happened to my ear.

  78. But there's one place I know to go and find big-picture help in our dust-to-dust reality of our lives and of this world,

  79. and that's the Bible.

  80. But as we open the Bible, I remember a book that I opened a few years ago by a philosopher named Luke Ferry.

  81. He's a professor of philosophy at the University of Paris,

  82. and he served as the French minister of national education.

  83. And he wrote this book called A Brief History of Thought, A Philosophical Guide to Living.

  84. And this is what Luke Ferry says.

  85. He says,

  86. When I was a student in 1968, when religious questions were not the most fashionable,

  87. we basically ignored, lumped together, and cheerfully channel-hopped our way through the great monotheistic religions.

  88. It was possible to pass our exams and even become a philosophy professor by knowing next to nothing about Judaism, Islam, or Christianity.

  89. As a result, for years, I knew more or less nothing about the intellectual history of Christianity beyond the cultural commonplaces.

  90. And Ferry says,

  91. This strikes me as absurd, and I would not wish you to repeat the mistake.

  92. Even if one is not a believer, and all the more so if one is hostile to religion, we have no right to ignorance.

  93. If only we oppose it, we must at least be familiar with religion and its various forms and understand what we are opposing.

  94. There is not a museum of art or even of contemporary art which does not require a minimum of theological understanding if one is to fully understand its contents.

  95. That's a striking quote to me because as we think about the universal aspirations of humankind,

  96. the kind of stuff philosophers work on, the search for identity, the quest for meaning, the sense of guilt, longing for freedom,

  97. the hunger for love, the instinct to worship, the dread of death, and the desire to survive,

  98. I would argue that Jesus corresponds rather wonderfully and beautifully to these deep and universal human aspirations.

  99. And so I agree with Luke Ferry that it's strange and rather shocking that Jesus would be so studiously ignored by philosophers

  100. and by the educated elites of the Western world.

  101. Think about it.

  102. We have more evidence about Jesus than all the great figures of ancient history,

  103. and part of that evidence is the Gospel of John and the story of Lazarus.

  104. And when you think about all the great heroes of history,

  105. how many of them have stood in a cemetery and with the power of a word raised a human being from death to life?

  106. Now, if that happened and we have strong evidence and tough-minded reasons to believe that it did happen,

  107. wouldn't we want to know more about this person, who they are, what they came to do,

  108. what their philosophy of life is all about?

  109. And shouldn't that have some bearing on our philosophy of life and our approach to how we're going to live it?

  110. So what I want to say this morning from John 11 is that Jesus gives us tombstone truth,

  111. graveside grace, and primal power.

  112. I just want to walk us through each one of those.

  113. Jesus gives us tombstone truth, graveside grace, and primal power.

  114. First of all, Jesus gives us tombstone truth.

  115. Look at verse 21.

  116. Lord, Martha said to Jesus,

  117. If you had been here, my brother would not have died.

  118. But I know that even now God will give you whatever you ask.

  119. And Jesus said to her,

  120. Your brother will rise again.

  121. And Martha answered,

  122. I know he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

  123. These are orthodox doctrines of Scripture.

  124. That God is all-powerful,

  125. that nothing's impossible for him,

  126. that he listens to the prayers of the righteous,

  127. that at the end of history,

  128. God will raise his covenant people to new life.

  129. That's sturdy biblical theology that gives us hope in the hardest times.

  130. And though it's true,

  131. it's kind of cold comfort to grieving Martha.

  132. And so Jesus gives an even deeper comfort to her

  133. with what are perhaps some of his most famous words in verse 25.

  134. He says,

  135. I am the resurrection and the life.

  136. Anyone who believes in me will live,

  137. even though they die.

  138. And whoever lives by believing in me will never die.

  139. Do you believe this?

  140. Jesus, when he says,

  141. I am the resurrection,

  142. he's claiming to be the Lord of our physical death.

  143. If you're trusting in me,

  144. he says,

  145. even though you die,

  146. you will live.

  147. Now, you'll not escape the experience of death,

  148. but you will survive it.

  149. You'll live with God in a disembodied state temporarily.

  150. And then as the scriptures teach,

  151. when Jesus comes again on the last day,

  152. you will be raised up.

  153. You will be re-embodied with him and like him

  154. with a new resurrection body like Jesus' body

  155. that has unimaginable powers.

  156. So though your body now is weak and fragile and mortal,

  157. your new body will be immune from pain and disease and fatigue

  158. and shame and age and death

  159. because that body will be free finally of sin.

  160. So Jesus says,

  161. I am the resurrection.

  162. You don't need to look to a future event.

  163. You need to look to the present person with you now.

  164. Now, the resurrection is not so much a distant hope

  165. as it is God in the flesh talking to you.

  166. Jesus is saying,

  167. I've come to win a victory.

  168. I've come to triumph and conquer over death.

  169. And so it follows logically

  170. that my beloved believers,

  171. for them,

  172. death will not be the last word.

  173. You guys tracking with me?

  174. I need like an amen or I need,

  175. I can't keep preaching the sermon.

  176. This is like not a monologue here.

  177. Yes, you are going to share in the shock

  178. and the scandal and the sadness of death,

  179. but for you,

  180. your final state will be the reversal

  181. of the reality of physical dissolution.

  182. So don't look to the future for your hope.

  183. Look to me right now

  184. for I am the resurrection

  185. and I have come to bring people

  186. from death to life.

  187. The resurrection is not a doctrine.

  188. The resurrection has a living face

  189. and a name.

  190. It's Jesus.

  191. I'm the resurrection.

  192. That's a claim to be the Lord

  193. over physical death.

  194. And when he says,

  195. I am the life,

  196. that is a claim to be the Lord

  197. over spiritual death.

  198. Jesus says in verse 26,

  199. I'm the life

  200. and whoever lives by believing in me

  201. will never die.

  202. Or as one translator says,

  203. they will never ever die

  204. an eternal death.

  205. For all people are born

  206. under the judgment of God

  207. for our sins.

  208. We arrive at life

  209. already in a state of death,

  210. alienated from God,

  211. separated from the God of life

  212. under his just condemnation.

  213. But Jesus says,

  214. when we experience him

  215. who is life with a capital L,

  216. we will come alive.

  217. That as he taught Nicodemus,

  218. we will be born again from above,

  219. that the Holy Spirit

  220. will come down

  221. and bring the divine,

  222. eternal life of God

  223. into us.

  224. That Jesus,

  225. who is the life

  226. by the Holy Spirit,

  227. will bring us

  228. into the fellowship of love

  229. with his Father.

  230. And if that's true of you,

  231. if you're in this circle

  232. of life and love

  233. with God,

  234. you can never die

  235. a spiritual death.

  236. Nothing can separate you

  237. from the love of God.

  238. If you have this real,

  239. true,

  240. deep experience

  241. of life in Christ,

  242. your moment of physical death

  243. will not even be a blip.

  244. This life will be so strong,

  245. so full,

  246. so rich,

  247. so indestructible

  248. that in comparison

  249. with your physical death,

  250. it will be trivial.

  251. You will simply go

  252. straight from living

  253. with Christ in this world

  254. to a more intensified form

  255. of life

  256. with him

  257. in the world to come,

  258. which the scriptures tell us

  259. is better by far.

  260. Jesus has been building up

  261. to this

  262. through the whole gospel.

  263. And we heard him say

  264. in John chapter 5,

    John 5:24

  265. verse 24,

  266. he says,

  267. very truly I tell you,

  268. whoever hears my word

  269. and believes him

  270. who sent me

  271. has eternal life,

  272. not will have eternal life,

  273. but has,

  274. as a present,

  275. authentic experience,

  276. you have eternal life

  277. now,

  278. and you will not be judged

  279. because you crossed over

  280. from death

  281. to life.

  282. And Jesus goes on,

  283. he says,

  284. very truly I tell you,

  285. a time is coming

  286. and has now come

  287. when the dead

  288. will hear the voice

  289. of the Son of God

  290. and those who hear

  291. will live.

  292. We heard him say

  293. a couple weeks ago

  294. in John chapter 8,

    John 8 chapter mention

  295. very truly I tell you,

  296. whoever obeys my word

  297. will never see death.

  298. And Jesus is going to go on

  299. in his great

  300. high priestly prayer

  301. in John 17,

  302. he's going to pray this.

  303. He's going to say,

  304. now this is eternal life

  305. that they may know you,

  306. the only true God

  307. and Jesus Christ

  308. whom you have sent.

  309. Eternal life

  310. is not a thing,

  311. it's not an object

  312. that you possess.

  313. Eternal life

  314. is a person,

  315. it's a relationship,

  316. it's an experience

  317. that you enter into.

  318. And Jesus,

  319. I have to say,

  320. he's pretty excited

  321. about not only life

  322. after death

  323. but life before death

  324. right now.

  325. He's come

  326. and he's come

  327. to deal with

  328. the problem

  329. of life

  330. and its meaninglessness

  331. and he's also come

  332. to deal with

  333. the problem

  334. of death

  335. and its certainty.

  336. And that's why

  337. he says,

  338. I am both

  339. the resurrection

  340. and the life.

  341. Do you believe this?

  342. Do you believe that?

  343. That's the question

  344. that he asked

  345. and we're going to come

  346. to Martha's answer

  347. in a little bit.

  348. But this is,

  349. this is just good

  350. tombstone truth

  351. and you're going

  352. to need it.

  353. You're going

  354. to need it

  355. because you're all

  356. going to stand

  357. at a tombstone.

  358. And so Jesus gives us

  359. not only tombstone truth

  360. but he also gives us

  361. graveside grace.

  362. He gives us

  363. not just tombstone truth

  364. but graveside grace.

  365. I was with one

  366. of my New Testament

  367. professors last week,

  368. Reggie Kidd

  369. and we were talking

  370. by the fire

  371. drinking some strong

  372. beverages

  373. talking about

  374. how much we love

  375. the gospel of John

  376. because in it

  377. we get this

  378. high divinity

  379. of Jesus

  380. but also this deep

  381. humanity of Jesus.

  382. Jesus is the word

  383. of God

  384. who made the world

  385. but he also

  386. has the longest

  387. and deepest

  388. conversations

  389. and dialogues

  390. with people

  391. whom he radically

  392. is transforming.

  393. And John 11

  394. is no different.

  395. Here we see

  396. Jesus' divine power

  397. and his great

  398. humanity.

  399. Look with me

  400. at the end

  401. of the story

  402. where Jesus says

  403. in verse 43

  404. called out

  405. in a loud voice

  406. Lazarus come out

  407. and the dead

  408. man came out.

  409. Now that's a power

  410. beyond human imagining.

  411. We can put a man

  412. on the moon

  413. but can we

  414. call the dead

  415. out of a grave?

  416. Of the greatest

  417. achievements

  418. of the 20th century

  419. Jesus' achievement

  420. in the first century

  421. was even greater

  422. I have to say.

  423. We get

  424. this amazing

  425. description

  426. of divine power

  427. here

  428. but alongside

  429. it we get

  430. this lovely

  431. description

  432. of humanity.

  433. Jesus is close

  434. with this family.

  435. It says that

  436. he had great

  437. affection for them.

  438. He loved Martha.

  439. He loved Mary.

  440. He loved Lazarus.

  441. When they saw him

  442. weeping over his friend

  443. they said

  444. see how

  445. see how

  446. he loved him.

  447. This was his

  448. home base

  449. his spiritual family

  450. that he had adopted

  451. when he'd come down

  452. to Jerusalem

  453. this is where

  454. he would be

  455. with this family.

  456. And

  457. alongside

  458. of his divine

  459. power

  460. we see

  461. a deep

  462. sympathy

  463. that Jesus

  464. has with those

  465. he calls

  466. friends

  467. especially when

  468. they're going

  469. through a family

  470. tragedy

  471. we see Jesus

  472. weep

  473. with those

  474. who weep.

  475. We get here

  476. a picture

  477. of the supernatural

  478. power that

  479. separates Jesus

  480. from us

  481. because we can't

  482. do that

  483. we can't stand

  484. in a graveyard

  485. and call people

  486. to come out

  487. but we also

  488. get here

  489. a picture

  490. of a human

  491. sympathy

  492. from Jesus

  493. that draws

  494. us close

  495. to him

  496. and if

  497. in his divinity

  498. he does

  499. for us

  500. what we cannot

  501. do for ourselves

  502. in his humanity

  503. he sets

  504. for us

  505. a pattern

  506. of what

  507. we ought

  508. to be

  509. like

  510. in our life

  511. and in our

  512. experience

  513. and look

  514. at what

  515. he does

  516. with these

  517. two sisters

  518. Martha

  519. and Mary

  520. in their

  521. different

  522. personalities

  523. and their

  524. drastically

  525. different

  526. needs

  527. we read

  528. in verse

  529. 32

  530. that when

  531. Mary reached

  532. the place

  533. where Jesus

  534. was

  535. and saw

  536. him

  537. she fell

  538. at his

  539. feet

  540. and said

  541. Lord

  542. if you

  543. had been

  544. here

  545. my brother

  546. would not

  547. have died

  548. the same

  549. statement

  550. as Martha

  551. they must

  552. have been

  553. saying it

  554. to one

  555. another

  556. for days

  557. all week

  558. long

  559. if only

  560. the Lord

  561. were here

  562. but Mary

  563. in contrast

  564. she doesn't

  565. want to

  566. talk theology

  567. she doesn't

  568. want to

  569. talk the

  570. truth

  571. with Jesus

  572. she's

  573. so

  574. stricken

  575. with grief

  576. that all

  577. she can

  578. do

  579. is throw

  580. herself

  581. down

  582. on the

  583. ground

  584. at his

  585. feet

  586. and some

  587. of us

  588. know what

  589. that means

  590. some of us

  591. know what

  592. it means

  593. to be so

  594. sad

  595. and so

  596. broken

  597. that all

  598. you can

  599. do is

  600. just crumble

  601. up in a

  602. pile

  603. and in a

  604. puddle

  605. of tears

  606. but look

  607. at verse

  608. 35

  609. kids

  610. this is a

  611. great one

  612. if your

  613. parents want

  614. you to do

  615. some scripture

  616. memory

  617. I recommend

  618. starting here

  619. what does

  620. it say

  621. it says

  622. Jesus

  623. wept

  624. my son

  625. Walter

  626. was reflecting

  627. on this

  628. verse a few

  629. weeks ago

  630. he said

  631. dad

  632. isn't it

  633. amazing

  634. that the

  635. most powerful

  636. person in

  637. the universe

  638. cries like

  639. us

  640. and that he

  641. cries with

  642. us

  643. it is

  644. amazing

  645. it's amazing

  646. that he

  647. shares our

  648. tears

  649. and what's

  650. amazing

  651. is that

  652. he's

  653. deeply

  654. moved

  655. and

  656. troubled

  657. with

  658. us

  659. in

  660. verse

  661. 33

  662. it

  663. says

  664. that

  665. when

  666. Jesus

  667. saw her

  668. weeping

  669. and the

  670. Jews

  671. who had

  672. come along

  673. with her

  674. also

  675. weeping

  676. he was

  677. deeply

  678. moved

  679. in spirit

  680. and

  681. troubled

  682. we could

  683. also

  684. interpret

  685. that

  686. that

  687. he

  688. was

  689. outraged

  690. and

  691. grief

  692. stricken

  693. and if

  694. you know

  695. anything

  696. about

  697. bereavement

  698. you know

  699. that tears

  700. and anger

  701. often

  702. flow

  703. together

  704. Jesus

  705. I think

  706. is outraged

  707. why

  708. because

  709. is he

  710. seeing

  711. the raw

  712. havoc

  713. that

  714. suffering

  715. and sin

  716. wreak

  717. on our

  718. lives

  719. as we

  720. encounter

  721. death

  722. is Jesus

  723. looking down

  724. the corridors

  725. of time

  726. looking down

  727. through the

  728. centuries

  729. at all the

  730. tombs

  731. and all the

  732. funerals

  733. of all of

  734. his beloved

  735. people

  736. unable to

  737. hold back

  738. his tears

  739. as he

  740. sees his

  741. loved

  742. ones

  743. losing

  744. their

  745. loved

  746. ones

  747. I

  748. think

  749. Jesus

  750. is

  751. outraged

  752. in this

  753. moment

  754. because

  755. he

  756. sees

  757. all the

  758. tears

  759. of

  760. Christian

  761. people

  762. and he

  763. knows

  764. that the

  765. turmoil

  766. and the

  767. bitterness

  768. that's in

  769. the heart

  770. of this

  771. family

  772. at this

  773. particular

  774. graveside

  775. is going

  776. to be

  777. repeated

  778. countless

  779. numbers

  780. of times

  781. through

  782. Christian

  783. history

  784. and that

  785. question

  786. of verse

  787. 37

  788. is going

  789. to be

  790. asked

  791. over

  792. and over

  793. again

  794. Lord

  795. where

  796. were

  797. you

  798. if

  799. only

  800. you

  801. had

  802. been

  803. here

  804. my

  805. loved

  806. one

  807. would

  808. not

  809. have

  810. died

  811. and

  812. Jesus

  813. knows

  814. that in

  815. the future

  816. he will

  817. not do

  818. what he's

  819. going to do

  820. for Lazarus

  821. in each

  822. case

  823. that despite

  824. the fact

  825. that he

  826. wins

  827. the victory

  828. over death

  829. at Easter

  830. death

  831. will continue

  832. to cause

  833. us

  834. intense

  835. grief

  836. and so

  837. he's

  838. outraged

  839. and he's

  840. grief stricken

  841. at the

  842. prospect

  843. of this

  844. pattern

  845. repeating

  846. itself

  847. down

  848. the

  849. ages

  850. so

  851. friends

  852. I hope

  853. you can

  854. see here

  855. that

  856. John 11's

  857. tombstone

  858. truth

  859. assures

  860. us

  861. of Jesus

  862. power

  863. over

  864. physical

  865. and

  866. spiritual

  867. death

  868. but it

  869. also

  870. assures

  871. us

  872. of

  873. Jesus

  874. love

  875. it

  876. assures

  877. us

  878. that

  879. he

  880. is

  881. in

  882. fact

  883. the

  884. suffering

  885. servant

  886. of Isaiah

  887. 53

  888. who

  889. has

  890. borne

  891. our

  892. griefs

  893. and

  894. carried

  895. our

  896. sorrows

  897. and if

  898. Jesus

  899. is the

  900. pattern

  901. for our

  902. humanity

  903. then we

  904. too

  905. are to

  906. bear

  907. one

  908. another's

  909. grief

  910. and we

  911. too

  912. are to

  913. carry

  914. one

  915. another's

  916. sorrows

  917. and to

  918. weep

  919. with those

  920. who

  921. weep

  922. in fact

  923. I would

  924. say

  925. that our

  926. visits

  927. and the

  928. tears

  929. of

  930. Christians

  931. are one

  932. of the

  933. major

  934. ways

  935. the

  936. world

  937. can

  938. experience

  939. God

  940. today

  941. amen

  942. so

  943. Jesus

  944. gives

  945. us

  946. tombstone

  947. truth

  948. and

  949. graveside

  950. grace

  951. but finally

  952. he also

  953. gives us

  954. primal

  955. power

  956. the

  957. prologue

  958. of this

  959. gospel

  960. we learn

  961. that Jesus

  962. came from

  963. the father

  964. full of

  965. grace

  966. and truth

  967. but

  968. he doesn't

  969. just tell us

  970. he's full of

  971. grace and

  972. truth

  973. he gives

  974. us

  975. a visual

  976. aid

  977. in verse

  978. 39

  979. we read

  980. take away

  981. the stone

  982. he said

  983. but lord

  984. said

  985. Martha

  986. the sister

  987. of the

  988. dead

  989. man

  990. by this

  991. time

  992. there is

  993. a bad

  994. odor

  995. for he

  996. has been

  997. there

  998. four

  999. days

  1000. now I

  1001. love the

  1002. old

  1003. King James

  1004. version

  1005. because

  1006. Martha

  1007. says

  1008. there

  1009. but lord

  1010. he stinketh

  1011. he stinketh

  1012. and that

  1013. just tips

  1014. me off

  1015. that the

  1016. gospel

  1017. is about

  1018. turning

  1019. tragedy

  1020. into

  1021. comedy

  1022. right

  1023. lord

  1024. he

  1025. stinketh

  1026. and Jesus

  1027. says

  1028. well did I

  1029. not tell you

  1030. that if you

  1031. believe

  1032. you will see

  1033. the glory

  1034. of God

  1035. and then

  1036. down in

  1037. verse 43

  1038. he called

  1039. out in a

  1040. loud voice

  1041. Lazarus

  1042. come out

  1043. and the

  1044. dead

  1045. man

  1046. came out

  1047. his hands

  1048. and feet

  1049. wrapped

  1050. with strips

  1051. of linen

  1052. and a

  1053. cloth

  1054. around his

  1055. face

  1056. and Jesus

  1057. said to

  1058. them

  1059. take off

  1060. the grave

  1061. clothes

  1062. and let

  1063. him go

  1064. now this

  1065. is a

  1066. heart

  1067. stopping

  1068. glorious

  1069. moment

  1070. because an

  1071. immovable

  1072. object

  1073. meets with

  1074. an

  1075. irresistible

  1076. force

  1077. death

  1078. meets

  1079. Christ

  1080. and Christ

  1081. conquers

  1082. this is a

  1083. power that

  1084. should drive

  1085. us to

  1086. awe

  1087. and thanks

  1088. and hope

  1089. this is a

  1090. power that

  1091. should be

  1092. the center

  1093. of our

  1094. philosophy

  1095. of life

  1096. now if

  1097. you think

  1098. about it

  1099. there are

  1100. most likely

  1101. other newly

  1102. buried people

  1103. in this

  1104. tomb

  1105. and so

  1106. it's a

  1107. good thing

  1108. that Jesus

  1109. said the

  1110. name

  1111. Lazarus

  1112. otherwise

  1113. many people

  1114. would have

  1115. come out

  1116. Jesus

  1117. would have

  1118. been like

  1119. no Kevin

  1120. I'm sorry

  1121. not you

  1122. not now

  1123. at least

  1124. but there

  1125. is a

  1126. kind of

  1127. miracle

  1128. within a

  1129. miracle

  1130. here

  1131. that

  1132. Lazarus

  1133. comes

  1134. stumbling

  1135. out

  1136. somehow

  1137. wrapped up

  1138. in his

  1139. burial

  1140. clothes

  1141. I mean

  1142. we don't

  1143. know

  1144. really

  1145. how

  1146. he

  1147. did

  1148. that

  1149. Jesus

  1150. doesn't

  1151. bring him

  1152. out in

  1153. pristine

  1154. condition

  1155. he gets

  1156. his friends

  1157. involved

  1158. and I think

  1159. that's a

  1160. little picture

  1161. of the

  1162. mission

  1163. of the

  1164. church

  1165. he says

  1166. to his

  1167. disciples

  1168. around him

  1169. take off

  1170. the grave

  1171. clothes

  1172. and let

  1173. him go

  1174. free

  1175. and that's

  1176. really kind

  1177. of our

  1178. job

  1179. with each

  1180. other

  1181. you're not

  1182. dead

  1183. anymore

  1184. you're

  1185. alive

  1186. you need

  1187. to go

  1188. free

  1189. and walk

  1190. and follow

  1191. Jesus

  1192. but how

  1193. did Jesus

  1194. reveal the

  1195. glory of

  1196. God

  1197. how did he

  1198. life out

  1199. of death

  1200. we're told

  1201. in the story

  1202. that he did

  1203. it through

  1204. prayer

  1205. verse 41

  1206. then Jesus

  1207. looked up

  1208. and said

  1209. father

  1210. I thank

  1211. you that

  1212. you have

  1213. heard me

  1214. I knew

  1215. that you

  1216. always

  1217. hear me

  1218. Jesus I

  1219. think invites

  1220. us to pray

  1221. like him

  1222. to look

  1223. up

  1224. to open

  1225. our eyes

  1226. to talk

  1227. straight to

  1228. our father

  1229. in heaven

  1230. to say

  1231. thank you

  1232. so much

  1233. for hearing

  1234. us

  1235. and he

  1236. invites us

  1237. to pray

  1238. and ask

  1239. God

  1240. to hold

  1241. at bay

  1242. the forces

  1243. of death

  1244. and to

  1245. cause

  1246. life

  1247. to triumph

  1248. over death

  1249. and we

  1250. should try

  1251. to pray

  1252. this way

  1253. we should

  1254. try to pray

  1255. like Jesus

  1256. for the war

  1257. in Ukraine

  1258. for strained

  1259. marriages

  1260. for troubled

  1261. youth

  1262. for broken

  1263. hearts

  1264. for gospel

  1265. breakthrough

  1266. we should

  1267. ask God

  1268. would you

  1269. let life

  1270. triumph

  1271. over death

  1272. and Jesus

  1273. when he

  1274. thanks his

  1275. father

  1276. for hearing

  1277. his prayer

  1278. he's referring

  1279. to the fact

  1280. that he's

  1281. been praying

  1282. for Lazarus

  1283. for days

  1284. for days

  1285. before he

  1286. even got

  1287. to this

  1288. prayer

  1289. he's been

  1290. praying

  1291. that though

  1292. he die

  1293. he'd be

  1294. preserved

  1295. from corruption

  1296. that his

  1297. body in the

  1298. tomb

  1299. would be

  1300. whole

  1301. and complete

  1302. that he'd

  1303. be ready

  1304. to be

  1305. summoned

  1306. back

  1307. to life

  1308. and Jesus

  1309. prayers

  1310. are powerful

  1311. and we're

  1312. told in the

  1313. new testament

  1314. that Jesus

  1315. prays for

  1316. us

  1317. Jesus

  1318. is praying

  1319. right now

  1320. from the

  1321. throne of

  1322. God

  1323. and the

  1324. power of

  1325. the Holy

  1326. Spirit

  1327. for you

  1328. by name

  1329. in all

  1330. the circumstances

  1331. that you're

  1332. going through

  1333. and that

  1334. should give

  1335. us incredible

  1336. confidence

  1337. for our

  1338. lives today

  1339. it should

  1340. also give

  1341. us incredible

  1342. confidence

  1343. for our

  1344. future

  1345. that one

  1346. day Jesus

  1347. prayers are

  1348. going to be

  1349. answered

  1350. and he is

  1351. going to

  1352. say

  1353. Jonathan

  1354. Barry

  1355. St.

  1356. Claire

  1357. come

  1358. out

  1359. and that's

  1360. exactly what

  1361. I'm going

  1362. to do

  1363. so if

  1364. that's

  1365. what's

  1366. going to

  1367. happen

  1368. why am

  1369. I afraid

  1370. what do

  1371. I have

  1372. to be

  1373. afraid

  1374. of

  1375. now notice

  1376. as we

  1377. close

  1378. that Lazarus

  1379. is not

  1380. given a

  1381. body like

  1382. Jesus

  1383. resurrection

  1384. body

  1385. Jesus

  1386. does not

  1387. come out

  1388. of his

  1389. tomb

  1390. bound

  1391. hand

  1392. and foot

  1393. his

  1394. resurrection

  1395. body

  1396. is so

  1397. powerful

  1398. that we're

  1399. told in

  1400. the end

  1401. of this

  1402. gospel

  1403. that he

  1404. just passed

  1405. through his

  1406. grave

  1407. clothes

  1408. Jesus

  1409. just passed

  1410. through his

  1411. tombstone

  1412. right

  1413. that wasn't

  1414. moved for

  1415. Jesus to

  1416. get out

  1417. it was

  1418. moved for

  1419. us to

  1420. get in

  1421. and see

  1422. that the

  1423. tomb

  1424. was empty

  1425. Jesus

  1426. has gone

  1427. through

  1428. death

  1429. and out

  1430. the other

  1431. side

  1432. into a

  1433. life that

  1434. can never

  1435. die

  1436. into an

  1437. indestructible

  1438. life

  1439. but Lazarus

  1440. merely comes

  1441. back to

  1442. ordinary

  1443. human life

  1444. the process

  1445. of death

  1446. has been

  1447. reversed for

  1448. him and

  1449. he's not

  1450. given

  1451. a new

  1452. body

  1453. which I

  1454. imagine

  1455. caused him

  1456. to feel

  1457. a little

  1458. bit

  1459. ambivalent

  1460. on this

  1461. day

  1462. yes I'm

  1463. glad to be

  1464. welcomed back

  1465. by my

  1466. sisters

  1467. yes I am

  1468. glad that

  1469. Jesus used

  1470. me to

  1471. convince the

  1472. world that

  1473. he's the

  1474. son of

  1475. God

  1476. but I

  1477. gotta say

  1478. I'm a

  1479. little

  1480. bummed

  1481. I'm a

  1482. little

  1483. bummed

  1484. to be

  1485. leaving

  1486. the

  1487. joys of

  1488. heaven

  1489. behind

  1490. I'm a

  1491. little

  1492. bummed

  1493. that I

  1494. gotta come

  1495. and face

  1496. disease and

  1497. dying all

  1498. over again

  1499. I'm a

  1500. little

  1501. bummed

  1502. because it's

  1503. bad enough

  1504. to die

  1505. once

  1506. right

  1507. for most

  1508. of us

  1509. one funeral

  1510. is sufficient

  1511. that's all

  1512. I want

  1513. why does

  1514. Jesus go

  1515. through the

  1516. trouble

  1517. with his

  1518. friend

  1519. Lazarus

  1520. why does

  1521. he bother

  1522. with this

  1523. because we're

  1524. told in

  1525. verse 53

  1526. from that

  1527. day on

  1528. they plotted

  1529. to take

  1530. his life

  1531. Jesus I

  1532. think conspires

  1533. with his

  1534. friend Lazarus

  1535. and he knows

  1536. that this is

  1537. going to be

  1538. the triggering

  1539. event

  1540. he knows

  1541. that if he

  1542. goes to

  1543. war with

  1544. death

  1545. Jesus is

  1546. signing his

  1547. own

  1548. death

  1549. warrant

  1550. no one's

  1551. gonna want

  1552. me around

  1553. anymore

  1554. this is

  1555. too much

  1556. power

  1557. this threatens

  1558. the powers

  1559. that be

  1560. if I

  1561. bring

  1562. Lazarus

  1563. out

  1564. I'm

  1565. essentially

  1566. burying

  1567. myself

  1568. if

  1569. Lazarus

  1570. is raised

  1571. I'm

  1572. gonna sink

  1573. if Lazarus

  1574. lives

  1575. then I

  1576. have to

  1577. die

  1578. but Jesus

  1579. is joyfully

  1580. going to

  1581. die

  1582. why

  1583. because he

  1584. knows

  1585. that the

  1586. resurrection

  1587. and the

  1588. life

  1589. must die

  1590. if he's

  1591. going to

  1592. destroy

  1593. the power

  1594. that death

  1595. holds

  1596. over us

  1597. Jesus

  1598. is going

  1599. to have

  1600. to go

  1601. into

  1602. death

  1603. and dismantle

  1604. it from

  1605. the inside

  1606. and so

  1607. the immortal

  1608. God

  1609. in the

  1610. flesh

  1611. joyfully

  1612. walks

  1613. into the

  1614. jaws

  1615. of death

  1616. on the

  1617. cross

  1618. for you

  1619. and for

  1620. me

  1621. to give

  1622. us life

  1623. life to

  1624. the full

  1625. life

  1626. abundant

  1627. life

  1628. everlasting

  1629. life

  1630. that can

  1631. never

  1632. die

  1633. do you

  1634. believe

  1635. this

  1636. that's

  1637. the question

  1638. that

  1639. Jesus

  1640. asked

  1641. to

  1642. Martha

  1643. do you

  1644. do you

  1645. believe

  1646. this

  1647. and

  1648. John

  1649. tells us

  1650. at the

  1651. end of

  1652. his

  1653. gospel

  1654. he says

  1655. in John

  1656. 20

  1657. that Jesus

  1658. performed

  1659. many other

  1660. signs

  1661. in the

  1662. presence

  1663. of his

  1664. disciples

  1665. which are

  1666. not recorded

  1667. in this

  1668. book

  1669. but these

  1670. signs are

  1671. written

  1672. this

  1673. sign

  1674. of

  1675. Lazarus

  1676. was

  1677. written

  1678. down

  1679. as the

  1680. seventh

  1681. and

  1682. climactic

  1683. of the

  1684. great

  1685. signs

  1686. in this

  1687. gospel

  1688. it was

  1689. written

  1690. down

  1691. so that

  1692. you

  1693. may

  1694. believe

  1695. that

  1696. Jesus

  1697. is the

  1698. Messiah

  1699. the

  1700. Son

  1701. of

  1702. God

  1703. and that

  1704. by

  1705. believing

  1706. you

  1707. may

  1708. have

  1709. life

  1710. in

  1711. his

  1712. name

  1713. do

  1714. you

  1715. believe

  1716. Martha

  1717. says

  1718. in

  1719. verse

  1720. 27

  1721. yes

  1722. Lord

  1723. I

  1724. believe

  1725. that

  1726. you

  1727. are

  1728. the

  1729. Messiah

  1730. the

  1731. Son

  1732. of

  1733. God

  1734. who

  1735. was

  1736. to

  1737. come

  1738. into

  1739. the

  1740. world

  1741. on

  1742. the

  1743. lips

  1744. of

  1745. this

  1746. woman

  1747. in

  1748. a

  1749. culture

  1750. by

  1751. the

  1752. way

  1753. that

  1754. hadn't

  1755. been

  1756. revolutionized

  1757. by

  1758. Jesus

  1759. yet

  1760. they

  1761. hadn't

  1762. learned

  1763. from

  1764. Jesus

  1765. how

  1766. to

  1767. value

  1768. women

  1769. yet

  1770. on

  1771. the

  1772. lips

  1773. of

  1774. this

  1775. woman

  1776. comes

  1777. the

  1778. highest

  1779. confession

  1780. of

  1781. faith

  1782. in

  1783. the

  1784. gospel

  1785. three

  1786. amazing

  1787. affirmations

  1788. about

  1789. Jesus

  1790. person

  1791. that

  1792. you're

  1793. the

  1794. Messiah

  1795. you're

  1796. the

  1797. Son

  1798. of

  1799. God

  1800. and

  1801. you're

  1802. the

  1803. one

  1804. who

  1805. was

  1806. to

  1807. come

  1808. to

  1809. bring

  1810. life

  1811. to

  1812. this

  1813. world

  1814. Martha

  1815. brings

  1816. together

  1817. objective

  1818. intellectual

  1819. conviction

  1820. with

  1821. subjective

  1822. personal

  1823. commitment

  1824. believing

  1825. in the

  1826. person

  1827. of

  1828. Jesus

  1829. trusting

  1830. in the

  1831. work

  1832. of

  1833. Jesus

  1834. she

  1835. said

  1836. yes

  1837. Lord

  1838. I

  1839. believe

  1840. do

  1841. we

  1842. believe

  1843. do

  1844. we

  1845. believe

  1846. in

  1847. this

  1848. Jesus

  1849. who

  1850. brings

  1851. tombstone

  1852. truth

  1853. who

  1854. brings

  1855. graveside

  1856. grace

  1857. and who

  1858. brings

  1859. us

  1860. even

  1861. now

  1862. and

  1863. especially

  1864. on

  1865. the

  1866. last

  1867. day

  1868. primal

  1869. power

  1870. to

  1871. bring

  1872. the

  1873. dead

  1874. back

  1875. to

  1876. life

  1877. may

  1878. God

  1879. help

  1880. me

  1881. believe

  1882. may

  1883. he

  1884. help

  1885. you

  1886. believe

  1887. in the

  1888. name

  1889. of

  1890. the

  1891. Father

  1892. Son

  1893. and

  1894. Holy

  1895. Spirit

  1896. Amen
