  4. My name is Luther George. I'm a 9th grader at Oakland Tech and I'm in the youth group.

  5. My name is Eli Gilbert. I'm an 8th grader at Claremont Middle School and I'm in the youth group.

  6. A reading from the gospel according to John.

  7. John 14 verses 16 through 18.

    John 14:16–18

  8. And I will ask the Father and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever.

  9. The Spirit of Truth. The world cannot accept him because it neither sees him nor knows him, but you know him.

  10. He lives with you and will be in you.

  11. I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you.

  12. Continuing with verses 25 through 26.

  13. All this I have spoken while still with you, but the advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name,

  14. will teach you all things and remind you of everything I have said to you.

  15. John 15 verses 26 through 27.

    John 15:26–27

  16. When the advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth, who goes out from the Father,

  17. he will test about me and you also must testify for you have been with me from the beginning.

  18. John 16 verse 17 through 15.

  19. Be very truly, I tell you, it is for your good that I am going away.

  20. Unless I go away, the advocate will not come to you.

  21. But if I go, I will send him to you.

  22. When he comes, he will prove the world to be in the wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.

  23. About sin, because people do not believe in me.

  24. About righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer.

  25. And about judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

  26. I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.

  27. But when he, the Spirit of Truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.

  28. He will not speak on his own.

  29. He will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

  30. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you.

  31. All that belongs to the Father is mine.

  32. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.

  33. He will glorify me.

  34. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  35. Thanks to you, Lord Christ.

  36. Thank you so much for that reading, Eli and Luther.

  37. And good morning, Christ Church.

  38. It's good to be with you.

  39. And is it warm in here?

  40. Could someone turn the heat down back there?

  41. We're going to melt if it stays like this, or I am at least.

  42. If you're a guest today and you're new at Christ Church, we're delighted to have you.

  43. We'd love to meet with you after the service and connect with you over our coffee time.

  44. I have three weeks until my sabbatical begins, so this is my moment to form a connection with you for a little while.

  45. I will be here on April 17th, Easter Sunday, and then April 24th, which is a time when we'll celebrate our 16th birthday as a church.

  46. It should be really fun.

  47. As Andrew said, the mission of our church is to lead people into a deeper relationship with Christ and his church through community and for the city.

  48. And part of that mission is that we don't really talk about sports here at this church.

  49. Particularly, we don't talk about college basketball.

  50. We especially don't talk about the Final Four, the Duke-UNC rivalry.

  51. And if you're here to talk about that today, I don't want to talk to you because sports are dumb.

  52. Sports are just dumb.

  53. Okay.

  54. All right.

  55. Well, you can tell my team lost last night, so let's just get into the good news, shall we?

  56. We're looking at the farewell discourse, the Gospel of John, chapters 14 to 17.

    John 14 chapter mention

  57. And it's the upper room.

  58. It's Thursday night before Jesus' Good Friday crucifixion.

  59. And he's been saying to his disciples that he's going to leave them.

  60. And the result is that they're full of trouble in their hearts.

  61. Because they know that they can't continue the work that Jesus is entrusting to their hands unless Jesus is with them.

  62. And without Jesus, the mission is going to be impossible.

  63. And so they have sorrow in their hearts because if he leaves, we're totally helpless.

  64. We don't have the power we need to carry out this ministry.

  65. And so Jesus, in this discourse, he's anchoring them in something bigger than themselves.

  66. He's anchoring them in the being of God and the heart of the triune God.

  67. And so that's why in John 14, he's talking about his father.

  68. In my father's house, there are many rooms.

  69. And then in John 15, he's talking about the son, that I am the true vine and you are the branches.

  70. And then in John 16, he begins talking about the Holy Spirit.

  71. And this is really the most concentrated teaching we have from Jesus on the Holy Spirit in the four Gospels.

  72. And Jesus is comforting these grieving disciples who are preparing for his departure by saying,

  73. the spirit of truth is going to come and he's going to take my place.

  74. And this is how I will continue to be with you, my disciples, during my time of physical absence from you.

  75. So as we dive in to learn about this mysterious person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit,

  76. I want to encourage you also to be thinking ahead to next week.

  77. We have this congregational meeting.

  78. And one of the things we're going to do in that meeting is nominate new elders and deacons for this church.

  79. And, you know, as we think about what are the character and competency qualifications for somebody who's ordained to lead in the church,

  80. there's a lot of ways to answer that question.

  81. But surely part of the answer is that that person would be full of the Holy Spirit,

  82. that they'd be a person who walks with the Holy Spirit and is led by the Holy Spirit

  83. and bears the fruit of the Holy Spirit that we're going to be learning about.

  84. So I want you to keep that in mind as well.

  85. Well, what does Jesus teach us in the Farewell Discourse?

  86. What we learn is that the Holy Spirit speaks about Jesus through the apostles to us and through us to the world.

  87. The Holy Spirit speaks about Jesus through the apostles to us and through us to the world.

  88. And I want to begin with the idea that the Holy Spirit speaks to us about Jesus.

  89. You can look in chapter 14.

  90. He lays some stuff down in chapters 14, 15, and then really unpacks it in chapter 16.

  91. But chapter 14, verse 16, Jesus says,

  92. I will ask the Father and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever, the Spirit of truth.

  93. So first of all, the Spirit is a who and not a what.

  94. The Spirit is a person and not an impersonal force or thing.

  95. And as a person, he's an eternal person, not a created person who just kind of shows up here on the scene in the first century.

  96. Jesus is talking about the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit who existed before creation

  97. and has been related to one another in an eternal, unceasing outpouring of love, each with the other.

  98. And so Jesus says, I'm going to send you another advocate.

  99. I've been your advocate these three years.

  100. I'm going to send you another advocate who's going to be just as helpful to you as I've been to you.

  101. And then he says, if you turn to chapter 16, verse 7, Jesus says,

  102. Very truly I tell you, it is for your good, it is to your advantage that I go away.

  103. For unless I go away, the advocate cannot come.

  104. But if I go away, I will send him to you.

  105. Now that's a striking statement because if you're like me, you often think,

  106. if only I could have been with Jesus, if only I could have seen his face or heard his voice,

  107. if only I could have watched him feed the hungry and heal the sick and raise the dead,

  108. if only I could have sat at his feet like Mary and leaned on his shoulder like John,

  109. how could it possibly be better for Jesus to go away?

  110. How could it possibly be more for us to have less of Jesus?

  111. How could that be for our good?

  112. Well, I want us to keep in mind that there were two limitations to Jesus' physical presence.

  113. First of all, Jesus' presence was local, meaning that he could be separated from his disciples

  114. and their fellowship could be interrupted.

  115. If Jesus went down to Galilee or went down to Jerusalem, some of them stayed behind in Galilee.

  116. If the disciples went out to fish on the sea and Jesus stayed on the land, they couldn't be together.

  117. And if you think about it, if Jesus were still on earth today, we would not be able to get near him.

  118. All the planes, all the ships, all the roads, they'd be packed and there'd be really, really long lines

  119. and you'd be at the back of the line.

  120. But what the Holy Spirit does is he universalizes the presence of Jesus

  121. and makes Jesus available to every disciple in every church everywhere.

  122. Pretty awesome.

  123. Jesus' presence was local, but Jesus' presence was also external,

  124. meaning that he was not able in his ministry to enter into the personalities of his disciples.

  125. He wasn't able to change them from within to get into their thoughts and their passions

  126. and their motives and their desires.

  127. But we learn here that the Holy Spirit internalizes the presence of Jesus.

  128. Jesus says the Spirit will be in you.

  129. And this is why the apostles go on and on about this.

  130. This is Ephesians 3.

  131. It says Christ dwells by his Spirit in our hearts.

  132. Or 1 Corinthians 6 says that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.

  133. And what that means is that when congregations get together to worship,

  134. Jesus is here in our midst by the Holy Spirit.

  135. That when two or three disciples get together to pray,

  136. Jesus is there in their midst by the Holy Spirit.

  137. And that when you as a Christian are alone,

  138. you're actually not alone because Jesus is with you by the Holy Spirit.

  139. And that's why Jesus says it's to your advantage,

  140. it's for your good that I'm going away to send you the Holy Spirit

  141. because he's going to universalize my presence to the church and to every disciple.

  142. They're going to have the internalized presence of Jesus.

  143. Well, what does the Holy Spirit do when he's inside of us?

  144. What is his ministry within us?

  145. Well, let me just repeat a few of these verses we heard.

  146. John 14, 26, Jesus says,

  147. The Spirit of truth will teach you everything you need to know

  148. by reminding you of everything I have said to you.

  149. Chapter 15, verse 26, Jesus says,

  150. The Spirit of truth will testify about me.

  151. And then in chapter 16, verse 13, he says,

  152. The Spirit of truth will guide you into all the truth,

  153. speaking what he hears from me

  154. and making known what he receives from me

  155. and bringing glory to me.

  156. So I like to think of the Holy Spirit as the floodlight.

  157. When floodlighting is done well,

  158. the lights are so subtly placed in front of a building

  159. that you can't see the fixtures.

  160. And it's meant for us to just be able to see the building

  161. that the floodlights are illuminating.

  162. So think about like the Campanile at Cal at night.

  163. It's lit up at night, right?

  164. You're not paying attention to the lights themselves,

  165. but to the thing that's being lit.

  166. And the Holy Spirit loves nothing more

  167. than to light up Jesus Christ,

  168. to illuminate Jesus.

  169. Jesus says,

  170. He will glorify me.

  171. So the Holy Spirit is this self-effacing,

  172. never advertising himself,

  173. always glorifying Jesus person.

  174. How do you know if you're in a Spirit-filled church

  175. or with Spirit-filled Christians?

  176. Well, because are they centered on Jesus

  177. or are they centered on some other center?

  178. That would be the way to answer that question.

  179. Well, how does the Holy Spirit illuminate or glorify Jesus?

  180. Jesus says five times,

  181. He calls the Holy Spirit the paraclete.

  182. Paraclete.

  183. And that word in Greek means

  184. one who comes alongside of us.

  185. Sometimes it's translated as a helper,

  186. a comforter,

  187. an encourager,

  188. a counselor.

  189. It's one who comes alongside us

  190. and brings us to Jesus.

  191. And Jesus says three times

  192. that this Spirit is the Spirit of truth

  193. who will teach and testify and speak.

  194. So that when the Holy Spirit comes

  195. on the day of Pentecost,

  196. we find Him to be a speaking Spirit,

  197. a declaring Spirit,

  198. a teaching Spirit.

  199. And He will continue the teaching of Jesus

  200. after His death,

  201. His resurrection,

  202. His ascension into heaven

  203. where we can see Him no longer.

  204. Jesus' teaching ministry

  205. will be carried on by the Holy Spirit.

  206. If you're familiar at all

  207. with the Acts of the Apostles,

  208. it's really a book

  209. that's a theology

  210. of the person and work

  211. of the Holy Spirit.

  212. And if you look at Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  213. on the day of Pentecost,

  214. what happens

  215. is that tongues of fire

  216. come to rest on the apostles.

  217. And it's a vivid picture

  218. of this speaking Spirit

  219. who comes and touches

  220. the lips of His church,

  221. comes and touches

  222. the organs of speech

  223. of His disciples

  224. so that the flame of Jesus

  225. is resting on them

  226. that the Spirit,

  227. that Jesus might speak

  228. by His Spirit

  229. through His church.

  230. And what happens

  231. at Pentecost next

  232. is that they all begin

  233. to open their mouth.

  234. And they all begin

  235. to speak in different languages

  236. about the wonderful works

  237. of God done

  238. in and through Jesus Christ.

  239. What happens

  240. on the day of Pentecost

  241. when the Spirit comes?

  242. The Apostle Peter

  243. preaches a really long sermon.

  244. Not a three-pointer,

  245. a five-point sermon,

  246. longer than any of you

  247. could possibly bear

  248. to listen to.

  249. And what is that

  250. Spirit-inspired sermon about?

  251. It's about Jesus.

  252. The Spirit is a calling,

  253. beseeching,

  254. entreating Spirit

  255. who says things like this

  256. in Acts chapter 2.

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  257. He says,

  258. God has raised this Jesus

  259. to life,

  260. and God has made this Jesus

  261. whom you crucified,

  262. both Lord and Messiah.

  263. Repent and be baptized,

  264. every one of you,

  265. in the name of Jesus Christ

  266. for the forgiveness

  267. of your sins.

  268. That's what it sounds like

  269. when the Holy Spirit

  270. shows up and begins speaking.

  271. So the Holy Spirit

  272. speaks about Jesus.

  273. But also the Holy Spirit

  274. speaks about Jesus

  275. through the apostles

  276. to us.

  277. The Holy Spirit speaks about Jesus

  278. through the apostles

  279. to us.

  280. It's really important

  281. to remember

  282. that Jesus is not speaking

  283. to us in this farewell discourse,

  284. but that he's speaking

  285. to these 11 apostles.

  286. And he says again

  287. in verse 26,

  288. the advocate,

  289. the Holy Spirit,

  290. whom the Father

  291. will send in my name

  292. will teach you all things

  293. and will remind you

  294. of everything I have said

  295. to you.

  296. The Holy Spirit

  297. will remind these apostles

  298. of Jesus' teachings

  299. that they've already heard.

  300. And of course,

  301. these apostles are human.

  302. Their memories

  303. are fallible.

  304. Of course,

  305. they don't have TVs

  306. and smartphones

  307. like we do,

  308. so their attention spans

  309. are far larger than ours.

  310. And in their oral culture,

  311. they had a capacity

  312. to memorize

  313. as far greater than ours.

  314. In fact,

  315. Jews in the first century

  316. learned more by memory

  317. than they did by manuscript.

  318. And so we can be assured

  319. that these apostles

  320. had the capacity

  321. to remember all the things

  322. that Jesus did and said,

  323. but we have even greater assurance

  324. because the Holy Spirit,

  325. it says,

  326. came to remind them

  327. and be teaching them.

  328. And that assures us

  329. of the accuracy

  330. of all the things

  331. that we have

  332. in our New Testament.

  333. That here,

  334. in a special act of God

  335. through the Holy Spirit,

  336. He preserved

  337. the unique teaching

  338. of the supreme intelligence

  339. who's ever visited

  340. our planet.

  341. The Holy Spirit

  342. has given us

  343. divine objective truth

  344. in the New Testament.

  345. And that's what Jesus

  346. is teaching us here

  347. in chapter 16,

  348. verse 12.

  349. He says,

  350. I have much more

  351. to say to you,

  352. more than you can now bear.

  353. There's a ton more teaching

  354. you apostles need to hear,

  355. but I know you can't

  356. take it in.

  357. I know you can't carry it.

  358. I know it's too heavy

  359. a burden tonight.

  360. You could not possibly

  361. assimilate it

  362. to teach it to others

  363. at this time

  364. because your hearts

  365. are so full

  366. and so burdened

  367. and so troubled

  368. with the events

  369. that are leading up

  370. to my cross

  371. tomorrow night.

  372. But, Jesus says

  373. in verse 13,

  374. when He,

  375. the Spirit of truth,

  376. comes,

  377. He will guide you

  378. into all the truth

  379. and He will speak,

  380. He will not speak

  381. on His own,

  382. He will speak only

  383. what He hears

  384. and He will tell you

  385. what is yet to come.

  386. The Spirit will come

  387. to bring the entire truth,

  388. all the truth

  389. that I taught you

  390. and all the truth

  391. that I wanted

  392. to teach you,

  393. all the truth

  394. that God sent me

  395. into the world

  396. to teach you.

  397. And the Holy Spirit,

  398. when He comes,

  399. He doesn't give

  400. a new,

  401. independent,

  402. secret revelation.

  403. The Holy Spirit

  404. does not teach

  405. a new gospel

  406. that's different

  407. from the doctrines

  408. and the ethics

  409. that Jesus taught.

  410. We don't become

  411. a Christian

  412. and then learn

  413. the gospel of Jesus

  414. and then sometime later

  415. learn the gospel

  416. of the Holy Spirit.

  417. It's all one thing.

  418. Jesus says

  419. He's going to hear,

  420. He's going to speak

  421. what He hears

  422. from the Father

  423. and the Son

  424. and He's going to declare

  425. to you

  426. the things

  427. that we find

  428. in the gospels,

  429. in the apostolic letters

  430. and in the Acts

  431. of the Apostles

  432. and in the revelation

  433. given to John,

  434. all the stuff

  435. that's in the New Testament.

  436. And the question is,

  437. can we trust

  438. these writings

  439. to tell us

  440. the truth?

  441. And I want to suggest

  442. to you today

  443. that if Jesus

  444. gave the Holy Spirit

  445. and the authority

  446. of the Holy Spirit

  447. to the apostles

  448. to teach

  449. and if He empowered

  450. them with His Spirit

  451. of truth

  452. to nudge their minds

  453. as to how Jesus

  454. would be responding

  455. to all the opportunities

  456. and the challenges

  457. of these new Christian communities

  458. to which these letters

  459. were being written,

  460. then we have to give

  461. those letters

  462. final authority

  463. in our lives.

  464. We have to believe

  465. those words

  466. as words that are coming

  467. straight to us

  468. from the resurrected,

  469. ascended Jesus Himself.

  470. We are not at liberty

  471. to selectively affirm words

  472. that fit our own paradigms

  473. and then to ignore

  474. or even reject words

  475. that we simply don't like.

  476. You guys tracking with me?

  477. So, the same thing applies

  478. not only to the apostolic letters

  479. but to the gospels

  480. because these are the result

  481. of the Holy Spirit

  482. bringing to remembrance

  483. all the things

  484. that Jesus said

  485. and all the things

  486. that He did

  487. climaxing

  488. in His Good Friday

  489. and Easter Sunday work.

  490. And the Holy Spirit

  491. doesn't just give us

  492. this cold

  493. and lifeless book.

  494. What the Holy Spirit does

  495. is He takes this firm word

  496. of the scriptures

  497. and He gives us

  498. a fresh word

  499. for our spirits.

  500. When the Holy Spirit comes

  501. we call upon Him

  502. to teach us

  503. through the New Testament

  504. which is the end product

  505. of the Spirit's work

  506. in the apostles

  507. and we ask the Holy Spirit

  508. through this external

  509. objective word

  510. to give us an internal

  511. subjective word

  512. for our spirits.

  513. And what we need

  514. to hear today

  515. the Holy Spirit

  516. makes this Jesus

  517. not just a historical figure

  518. of the past

  519. but a living contemporary

  520. who speaks to us today.

  521. The Holy Spirit

  522. applies

  523. the historical

  524. revelation of Jesus

  525. to our present experience

  526. and He renders

  527. the truth of Jesus

  528. active and alive

  529. in our hearts.

  530. The Holy Spirit

  531. interprets to us

  532. the words

  533. and the works

  534. of Jesus

  535. and takes what belongs

  536. to Jesus

  537. and makes it plain

  538. to the church.

  539. And that's how you know

  540. the Holy Spirit's working

  541. when that's happening

  542. among us.

  543. The Holy Spirit

  544. doesn't just enable us

  545. to look backward

  546. to memories about Jesus.

  547. The Holy Spirit

  548. enables us

  549. to look upward

  550. at the living Christ

  551. Himself

  552. and to look forward

  553. to the kingdom

  554. in which

  555. Jesus

  556. is leading us.

  557. So do you want

  558. to know the Holy Spirit?

  559. Do you want

  560. to have a relationship

  561. and experience

  562. the power

  563. of the Holy Spirit?

  564. You've got to spend time

  565. near the hot spots

  566. of the Holy Spirit.

  567. And the hot spot

  568. is the scriptures

  569. that the Spirit

  570. produced.

  571. The Spirit of God

  572. produced the Word

  573. of God

  574. and you've got

  575. to create

  576. and develop

  577. a daily discipline

  578. to digest

  579. those scriptures

  580. and to make them

  581. a part of your life.

  582. A predictable pattern

  583. for reading the Gospels

  584. and the epistles

  585. of the New Testament.

  586. And when you do

  587. to ask the Holy Spirit

  588. to guide you

  589. into the truth

  590. that He's revealed

  591. to illumine

  592. and glorify Jesus

  593. for you

  594. and to enlighten

  595. your mind

  596. to understand it

  597. because He knows

  598. Jesus best

  599. and He knows

  600. you best

  601. and He knows

  602. how to take

  603. what belongs

  604. to Jesus

  605. and make it

  606. yours.

  607. And we should be

  608. saying to the Spirit

  609. as we're reading

  610. Spirit,

  611. what do you want

  612. to say to me?

  613. What do you want

  614. me to do?

  615. What do you want

  616. me to say

  617. as a result

  618. of what you're speaking?

  619. And don't be surprised

  620. if the Spirit

  621. comes back to you

  622. and says,

  623. well, keep your eyes

  624. fixed on Jesus

  625. and see what a

  626. capable,

  627. competent Savior

  628. He is for you

  629. and trust Him.

  630. Live for Him.

  631. Don't let Him down.

  632. Follow Him.

  633. Serve Him

  634. with all of your life.

  635. That's the kind of stuff

  636. the Spirit

  637. says over

  638. and over

  639. and over

  640. again

  641. and as much

  642. as possible

  643. we should try

  644. to read

  645. the Word of God

  646. created by the Spirit

  647. of God

  648. with the people

  649. of God

  650. because that's

  651. again the hot spot

  652. of where the Spirit

  653. likes to show up

  654. and do His work

  655. on the world,

  656. on the earth

  657. and in the world.

  658. The Holy Spirit

  659. speaks about Jesus

  660. and likes

  661. no other topic

  662. more than that one

  663. and the Holy Spirit

  664. speaks about Jesus

  665. through the apostles

  666. and really

  667. no other organism

  668. but that organ.

  669. He speaks through

  670. the apostles

  671. to us

  672. but finally

  673. the Holy Spirit

  674. not only speaks

  675. through the apostles

  676. to us about Jesus

  677. but He speaks

  678. through us

  679. to the world

  680. about Jesus.

  681. Now I have much

  682. more to say to you

  683. more than you can

  684. now bear.

  685. This could be

  686. a really long sermon

  687. but I'll try

  688. to keep it short

  689. when the Holy Spirit

  690. comes at Pentecost

  691. we see Him

  692. as a missionary spirit.

  693. He's a witnessing spirit

  694. and that's what Jesus

  695. is telling us

  696. in verse 8.

  697. He says

  698. when He

  699. the Spirit

  700. comes

  701. He will prove

  702. the world

  703. to be in the wrong

  704. about sin

  705. and righteousness

  706. and judgment.

  707. The Spirit

  708. is a powerful advocate

  709. who goes

  710. before the church

  711. to bring the world

  712. under conviction

  713. and in bringing

  714. the world

  715. under conviction

  716. to expose

  717. the falsity

  718. of the world's

  719. most fundamental

  720. ideas.

  721. All people

  722. everywhere

  723. have ideas

  724. about what's right

  725. and what's wrong.

  726. All people

  727. everywhere

  728. draw lines

  729. to mark off

  730. that which is good

  731. from that which is bad

  732. that which is true

  733. from that which is false

  734. that which is worthy

  735. of honor

  736. and that which is worthy

  737. of condemnation

  738. and Jesus is saying

  739. the Holy Spirit

  740. is going to come

  741. do three things.

  742. First of all

  743. how do people

  744. here where we live

  745. how do they

  746. answer that question

  747. of what's most wrong

  748. with the world?

  749. What is the greatest

  750. sin of the world?

  751. And Jesus says

  752. in verse 9

  753. He says

  754. the Spirit's going

  755. to come

  756. and prove the world

  757. wrong about sin

  758. because people

  759. do not believe

  760. in me.

  761. The Holy Spirit

  762. is going to show

  763. that our rejection

  764. and condemnation

  765. of Jesus

  766. was a failure

  767. to respond

  768. to the coming

  769. of God

  770. in the flesh.

  771. The Holy Spirit

  772. is going to come

  773. and show

  774. that the root

  775. wrong in the world

  776. is a refusal

  777. to believe in Jesus.

  778. A refusal

  779. to trust

  780. in God's Messiah

  781. who was sent

  782. to reveal

  783. the Father's love

  784. for the world.

  785. The Holy Spirit

  786. Jesus says

  787. is going to come

  788. and show

  789. that this persistent

  790. ongoing refusal

  791. to believe

  792. in the greatest

  793. of all world realities

  794. namely Jesus

  795. is the greatest

  796. of all wrongs.

  797. That that is

  798. the basic evil

  799. out of which

  800. all other evils

  801. flow.

  802. And then the second

  803. thing the Spirit

  804. is going to come

  805. and do is

  806. Jesus says

  807. well how do people

  808. around you

  809. how do they answer

  810. that question

  811. of what's most

  812. right in the world?

  813. What is the reality

  814. and the event

  815. and the fact

  816. that is the most

  817. right thing

  818. that's ever happened

  819. in human history?

  820. And Jesus says

  821. in verse 10

  822. the Spirit's going

  823. to come

  824. and He's going

  825. to convict

  826. the world

  827. that it's wrong

  828. about righteousness

  829. because I'm going

  830. to the Father

  831. where you can see

  832. me no longer.

  833. The work of the Spirit

  834. is to come

  835. and show us

  836. that Jesus' career

  837. His life of obedience

  838. to the Father

  839. His crucifixion

  840. to atone

  841. for the world's sins

  842. His resurrection

  843. to conquer death

  844. His going

  845. to the Father

  846. to rule

  847. over all things

  848. in heaven

  849. that these

  850. are the most

  851. important

  852. helpful

  853. just

  854. and right

  855. deeds

  856. that have ever

  857. been done

  858. for the world.

  859. And you see

  860. by the world's

  861. understanding

  862. of righteousness

  863. Jesus was found

  864. to be in the wrong.

  865. The greatest

  866. of all religions

  867. the greatest

  868. of all governments

  869. at that time

  870. said Jesus

  871. is wrong

  872. and they put Him

  873. on a cross.

  874. But in God's

  875. higher tribunal

  876. in the higher

  877. law court

  878. of God

  879. Jesus was found

  880. not to be

  881. in the wrong

  882. but to be

  883. in the right.

  884. And Jesus' cross

  885. reveals

  886. that the one

  887. hanging there

  888. is He is

  889. the righteous

  890. one of God.

  891. And that by

  892. His hanging there

  893. He's won a victory

  894. of the righteousness

  895. of God

  896. over human sin.

  897. And that everybody

  898. who places

  899. their faith in Him

  900. we share

  901. in His status

  902. of being people

  903. who are not

  904. in the wrong

  905. but who are

  906. in the right

  907. with Him.

  908. This is what

  909. the Holy Spirit

  910. does.

  911. You want to know

  912. the third thing

  913. He does?

  914. He convicts the world

  915. that it's wrong

  916. about what's wrong.

  917. He convicts the world

  918. that it's wrong

  919. about what's right.

  920. And then Jesus says

  921. that you know

  922. how do people

  923. around you

  924. answer this question

  925. about who wins

  926. in life's

  927. great contest

  928. between what's

  929. right and what's

  930. wrong.

  931. Between sin

  932. and righteousness.

  933. Between just

  934. and injustice.

  935. Between good

  936. and evil.

  937. Who ultimately

  938. wins?

  939. And Jesus says

  940. the Spirit

  941. comes

  942. in verse 11

  943. and He convicts

  944. the world

  945. that it's wrong

  946. about judgment

  947. because the prince

  948. of this world

  949. now stands

  950. condemned.

  951. The prince

  952. of this world

  953. the evil one

  954. the dark power

  955. who enslaves

  956. people and holds

  957. people in bondage

  958. that same power

  959. that came to

  960. condemn

  961. and to destroy

  962. Jesus

  963. on His cross.

  964. Well guess what?

  965. The resurrection

  966. the resurrected

  967. Jesus

  968. shows us

  969. that the power

  970. of that evil one

  971. has been

  972. definitively

  973. broken

  974. and that

  975. He has been

  976. dethroned

  977. and that

  978. that dark power

  979. that prince

  980. of this world

  981. He has been

  982. soundly judged

  983. and condemned

  984. so that all

  985. those whom

  986. He was

  987. condemning

  988. can be

  989. set free

  990. and all

  991. those who

  992. were in

  993. bondage

  994. can be

  995. liberated

  996. and have

  997. a new

  998. life.

  999. That's what

  1000. the Holy

  1001. Spirit

  1002. comes

  1003. to show

  1004. us.

  1005. Sorry I've only

  1006. got a couple

  1007. more sermons

  1008. and then

  1009. I'll go on

  1010. sabbatical

  1011. you don't have

  1012. to put up

  1013. with my passion

  1014. too much

  1015. longer

  1016. but this

  1017. missionary

  1018. spirit

  1019. this witnessing

  1020. spirit

  1021. He convicts

  1022. the world

  1023. in order to

  1024. convert the

  1025. world

  1026. in these

  1027. three major

  1028. areas of

  1029. what's wrong

  1030. with the

  1031. world

  1032. what's right

  1033. with the

  1034. world

  1035. and who

  1036. ultimately

  1037. is judged

  1038. to be

  1039. victorious

  1040. and who

  1041. ultimately

  1042. is judged

  1043. to be

  1044. defeated

  1045. and Christ

  1046. Church

  1047. I just

  1048. want to

  1049. encourage you

  1050. today that

  1051. you have

  1052. this

  1053. missionary

  1054. spirit

  1055. that

  1056. residing

  1057. within

  1058. you

  1059. is

  1060. this

  1061. witnessing

  1062. spirit

  1063. that

  1064. the

  1065. holy

  1066. life-giving

  1067. spirit

  1068. of God

  1069. is in

  1070. you

  1071. that

  1072. according

  1073. to Romans

  1074. 8

  1075. the one

  1076. who

  1077. the spirit

  1078. who raised

  1079. Christ

  1080. from the

  1081. dead

  1082. is living

  1083. in you

  1084. right

  1085. now

  1086. and that

  1087. through

  1088. your words

  1089. and your

  1090. works

  1091. through the

  1092. words and

  1093. works of

  1094. this

  1095. disciple

  1096. community

  1097. this

  1098. mighty

  1099. spirit

  1100. this

  1101. mighty

  1102. advocate

  1103. who

  1104. wants

  1105. to

  1106. bear

  1107. witness

  1108. to

  1109. Jesus

  1110. through

  1111. your

  1112. lives

  1113. and

  1114. through

  1115. what

  1116. you

  1117. do

  1118. and

  1119. what

  1120. you

  1121. say

  1122. this

  1123. mighty

  1124. spirit

  1125. wants

  1126. to

  1127. bear

  1128. witness

  1129. so

  1130. that

  1131. people

  1132. look

  1133. upon

  1134. this

  1135. hated

  1136. and

  1137. humiliated

  1138. one

  1139. on

  1140. his

  1141. cross

  1142. and

  1143. with

  1144. us

  1145. they

  1146. come

  1147. to

  1148. confess

  1149. actually

  1150. Jesus

  1151. is

  1152. Lord

  1153. the

  1154. Holy

  1155. Spirit

  1156. brings

  1157. the

  1158. power

  1159. of

  1160. God

  1161. and

  1162. the

  1163. truth

  1164. of

  1165. God

  1166. to

  1167. bear

  1168. so that

  1169. people

  1170. look at

  1171. Jesus

  1172. cross

  1173. of

  1174. shame

  1175. and

  1176. defeat

  1177. and

  1178. they

  1179. come

  1180. to

  1181. believe

  1182. with

  1183. us

  1184. actually

  1185. that

  1186. is

  1187. his throne

  1188. of glory

  1189. and victory

  1190. in this

  1191. world

  1192. the

  1193. spirit

  1194. of the

  1195. father

  1196. the

  1197. spirit

  1198. of

  1199. Jesus

  1200. the

  1201. spirit

  1202. of

  1203. truth

  1204. wants

  1205. wants

  1206. wants to

  1207. perform

  1208. his

  1209. own

  1210. miracles

  1211. in the

  1212. hearts

  1213. of

  1214. people

  1215. here

  1216. in the

  1217. bay

  1218. area

  1219. so that

  1220. they

  1221. are

  1222. brought

  1223. to

  1224. recognize

  1225. Jesus

  1226. as the

  1227. one

  1228. he

  1229. is

  1230. and

  1231. he

  1232. wants

  1233. to

  1234. perform

  1235. those

  1236. miracles

  1237. through

  1238. us

  1239. through

  1240. us

  1241. may it

  1242. be

  1243. so

  1244. the

  1245. holy

  1246. spirit

  1247. longs

  1248. to

  1249. speak

  1250. about

  1251. Jesus

  1252. through

  1253. the

  1254. apostles

  1255. to

  1256. us

  1257. and

  1258. through

  1259. us
