  4. Good morning. I'm Maddie Duhan and I'm part of the Women Reading Women group.

  5. Today's scripture readings are from the book of Joshua, chapter 4, verses 20 to 24, and the book of Judges, chapter 2, verses 8 to 10, as printed in the liturgy.

    Joshua 4:20–24 Judges 2:8–10

  6. A reading from the book of Joshua.

  7. And those twelve stones which they took out of the Jordan, Joshua set up at Gilgal.

  8. And he said to the people of Israel,

  9. When your children ask their fathers in times to come, what do these stones mean?

  10. Then you shall let your children know, Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.

  11. For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over,

  12. as the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over,

  13. so that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty,

  14. that you may fear the Lord your God forever.

  15. A reading from the book of Judges.

  16. And Joshua, the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of 110 years.

  17. And they buried him within the boundaries of his inheritance,

  18. Abtinath-Hirehs, in the hill country of Ephraim, north of the mountain Gaash.

  19. And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers.

  20. And there arose another generation after them,

  21. who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.

  22. The grass withers and the flowers fall.

  23. If you are just tuning in, today's your first Sunday at Christ Church, we welcome you.

  24. And just as context, I've returned from a four-month sabbatical that was given to me by the church just recently.

  25. And during that time, God gave me this one word, revival.

  26. And the simple prayer, revive us.

  27. And I want to go back today to the definitions that I gave you my first Sunday back at the beginning of this month.

  28. This is from a pastor in London who died about 40 years ago.

  29. His name was Martin Lloyd-Jones.

  30. And he said that revival is a visitation from on high, a great religious awakening,

  31. the unusual outpouring and manifestation of the Spirit of God.

  32. A church historian named Edwin Orr gives this definition.

  33. He says, revival is a movement of the Holy Spirit bringing about a revival of New Testament Christianity in the church of Christ and its related community.

  34. And the result of this outpouring of the Holy Spirit,

  35. the result of this awakening to New Testament Christianity in the church,

  36. is that people find themselves saturated with God.

  37. Over and over, people describe themselves as saturated with God.

  38. Now, if you're here today and you say, I think I have enough of the Holy Spirit.

  39. I think I've got this New Testament Christianity thing down.

  40. And I am more than saturated with God.

  41. This sermon series is probably not for you.

  42. But for the rest of us.

  43. We're talking today about expecting revival.

  44. And I'd like to try to raise our expectations for revival.

  45. God commanded the children of Israel to take 12 stones out of the middle of the Jordan River

  46. and set them up at Gilgal so that they would never forget.

  47. And they would always remember this mighty act of salvation that happened there in that place.

  48. That they would always remember God's wonderful works.

  49. And in the same way, we need help to learn about revivals.

  50. We need help to not forget and to remember these great times that God has brought to his people,

  51. both in Scripture and in church history, where God has come down in a powerful way.

  52. We don't want to forget these things lest we end up like this generation described in Judges chapter 2 that we just read.

    Judges 2 chapter mention

  53. There arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.

  54. What a tragic crisis among the people of God.

  55. And is that not a description of the cultural moment we're in?

  56. There's so much we don't know about the Lord.

  57. There's so much we don't know about what he's done for his people.

  58. And so I want to point our attention to these events recounted in Joshua chapter 4

    Joshua 4 chapter mention

  59. that speak directly to this theme of revival.

  60. And what I want to say today is that we need reminding that the Lord's hand is mighty for those who cry out to him.

  61. And first of all, we need reminding.

  62. God did something exceptional.

  63. God did something unusual, something striking and sudden and extraordinary.

  64. First of all, just by delivering the children of Israel from her enemies, the Egyptians,

  65. who had enslaved them and forced them into harsh labor for 400 years.

  66. And God, boom, he delivered them.

  67. And then after that, the Lord divided the Red Sea and they went through on dry land.

  68. Of all the mighty acts of salvation in the Old Testament, this is the foremost event.

  69. And here they are now after the wilderness for 40 years.

  70. They're looking on the other side of the Jordan River.

  71. They can see the land that God promised to Abraham, this land that they've been longing for,

  72. this land flowing with milk and honey.

  73. And the problem is, how are they going to get to the other side?

  74. How are they going to cross through this river, especially when it's at flood stage?

  75. And you can go home and look up YouTube, Jordan River flood stage.

  76. And you'll see, and you can just imagine, this ancient river was much wider, much deeper,

  77. much stronger flowing whitewater rapids.

  78. This is an impossible situation.

  79. This river cannot be crossed.

  80. But God.

  81. But God came and he divided the waters.

  82. And they went through, not on wet ground, but on dry ground, just like they did at the Red Sea.

  83. And God commanded them after that.

  84. But he said, take 12 stones from the spot where those priests stood in the middle of the river

  85. with the ark of the Lord's covenant, the symbol of God's presence.

  86. And I want you to take those 12 stones and set them up on the other side at Gilgal.

  87. Why does God command them to do this?

  88. Verse 21, it says that your children are going to ask their fathers in times to come,

  89. what do these stones mean?

  90. And I think we're in a similar position today as we consider the wonderful works of God in revival

  91. and the ways that God has shown his mighty hand, the ways that he's come down and he's acted in power

  92. to awaken and enliven and quicken his church.

  93. And what I'm wanting to do through these sermons is cause us to ask the question,

  94. what do these stones mean?

  95. What is it all about?

  96. What in the world are you and Andrew talking about?

  97. What are these events that have happened in the past?

  98. Why do they matter to us?

  99. What in the world is this revival in the 16th century you call the Reformation?

  100. What is this revival that happened in the 18th century called the Great Awakening?

  101. What exactly happened in 1857 on Wall Street in New York that changed the face of the church in the United States?

  102. What happened in 1904 to 1907 in Wales and all the way to India and China and Korea that changed the 20th century church?

  103. We don't even know about these things.

  104. And the stones that we're trying to set up.

  105. They're meant for the children of Israel to ask the question, what does it all mean?

  106. What do these stones mean?

  107. We don't know what happened.

  108. And these sermons on revival are meant to be like stones that cause us to ask, what is this?

  109. And why is it relevant to us today?

  110. Now, you would think with an event like this in your history, there'd be no need to remind people.

  111. It's extraordinary that we even need these stones of remembrance and memory.

  112. And you would think that, you know, here's these two impossible events that God made possible.

  113. The dividing and the crossing of the Red Sea and the dividing and the crossing of the Jordan River.

  114. There's no way people are going to need to be reminded in some sort of visible, external, objective way that this happened among their people.

  115. But God knows us better than we know ourselves.

  116. Right?

  117. He knows that we're made of the dust.

  118. He knows that we're common human clay.

  119. He knows that our human nature is corrupted by sin.

  120. And therefore, we so easily forget the truth.

  121. That even an unforgettable event can be forgotten.

  122. That even this thing that happened could come to somehow not be imprinted on the minds and impressed upon the consciences of the next generation.

  123. And so God says, put up some stones and get the attention of the people and provoke them to ask the question, what does all this mean for us?

  124. You guys tracking?

  125. So the Bible is like a set of stones for us.

  126. The Bible is meant for us to come along and to open it and to read it and there to encounter the power of the living God.

  127. This God who's revealing himself.

  128. This God who's doing mighty acts.

  129. This God who's saving people and showing that his hand is mighty.

  130. And yet so many people in the church today are just walking by those stones.

  131. They don't know what they mean.

  132. And they're not even asking the questions.

  133. And if we would just allow these stones of scripture to stop us in our tracks.

  134. If we would take the time to say, what does it all mean?

  135. We too could experience the power of the living God who reveals himself through those stones.

  136. Our communion table is like a set of stones.

  137. The Lord knew that in our sin we might forget even the death of the Son of God for us.

  138. His agony and his shame and all that he endured on the cross as our substitute to atone for our sins and bear the judgment of God in our place.

  139. How could we forget this?

  140. How could we forget this mighty act of God that demonstrated his eternal love for us?

  141. But Jesus knows us better than we know ourselves.

  142. And so he commands us, break bread.

  143. Drink wine.

  144. Do this in remembrance of me.

  145. He's setting up a visible, external, objective memorial, a tangible reminder lest we forget.

  146. What does this Bible mean?

  147. What does this table mean?

  148. What do these stones mean?

  149. And I want us to set up some stones of revival in this season at Christ Church.

  150. Stones that could be signposts for us to the history of God's mighty hand coming down to awaken his church.

  151. And I pray that as we do that subsequent generations, our children and their children and their children's children would be going along casually one day.

  152. And they would suddenly come across all these stones.

  153. And they would have awakened within them a new interest, a new curiosity to say, Mom, Dad, what is the meaning of all this for us?

  154. And that we might have the great privilege of telling them these stones serve as a testimony that the presence of the living God came down among us and performed a great miracle for us.

  155. We get to remind them of the facts, of the central event that once happened, that Christ was crucified to save sinners like us.

  156. That's what the stones mean.

  157. That's what the Bible means.

  158. That's what this table means.

  159. That's what every revival in the history of the church means.

  160. And we need reminding.

  161. We need reminding.

  162. And we need reminding that the Lord's hand is mighty.

  163. We need reminding that the Lord's hand is mighty.

  164. Look at verse 21.

  165. It says,

  166. When your children ask their fathers in times to come, what do these stones mean?

  167. Then you shall let your children know that Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.

  168. For the Lord your God dried up the waters of the Jordan for you until you passed over.

  169. As the Lord your God did to the Red Sea, which he dried up for us until we passed over.

  170. So that all the peoples of the earth may know that the hand of the Lord is mighty.

  171. That you may fear the Lord your God forever.

  172. You know, we too want to remember these times and these events where something amazing happened.

  173. Something wonderful happened to revive God's people.

  174. And it's not just something that happens, you know, only once in an utterly unique event.

  175. And you'll notice a series in our own text here that what God did at the Red Sea, he did again at the Jordan River.

  176. That God moved at the Jordan River exactly as he did before at the Red Sea.

  177. And the same thing happens in revival.

  178. It's not just something that happens once.

  179. It's something that happens serially and repeatedly down the centuries of the church.

  180. In the same way, with the same patterns, and the same characteristics, God does here what he did over there.

  181. And just as God worked in the same way at the sea as he did at the river,

  182. so the Holy Spirit has come down at different times in the life of the church.

  183. And he's shown his mighty hand here and here and here in the exact same ways that we too might know that the hand of the Lord is mighty.

  184. I want us to think for a moment about the past just 300 years of the church.

  185. And I want us to think about these revivals that have happened over the past few centuries

  186. that have caused us to see that the hand of the Lord is mighty.

  187. Think about the great awakening that happened in the 1730s and 40s.

  188. We know that before that time, the state of society was deplorable.

  189. And we also know that the state of the church was dead.

  190. And God decided to send the Holy Spirit down.

  191. And when the Holy Spirit came down, he converted and created some of the greatest preachers since the time of the apostles.

  192. And it was through the preaching, the renewed preaching of the gospel,

  193. that whole churches, whole cities, whole nations came alive to God in that time in a mighty way,

  194. in a way that showed that the Lord's hand is mighty.

  195. Historians tell us that, you know, this awakening had a huge part to play in the United Kingdom and her colonies,

  196. not descending into the kind of revolution that swept through France in 1789,

  197. that we were spared of that kind of violence and that kind of social chaos.

  198. And that rather what sprang up from that awakening was the trade unions movement.

  199. Right?

  200. That people, as the Holy Spirit came down,

  201. and people were given a new identity, a new nature, a new sort of dignity in Jesus Christ,

  202. they began to demand better education and better working conditions.

  203. And we know that also out of this revival, the abolition of slavery movement rose up.

  204. William Wilberforce and his whole cohort of abolitionists are a result of this revival.

  205. It would have never happened.

  206. This wide-scale liberation from bondage, liberation from oppression would have never happened

  207. had the Holy Spirit not come down in power at this time.

  208. What do these stones mean?

  209. They mean that the hand of the Lord is mighty, to do mighty things.

  210. If you fast forward to the revival in 1857 to 59 in the United States,

  211. the United Kingdom that spread throughout the world,

  212. that revival began in a lunch hour prayer meeting among business people on Wall Street, of all places.

  213. And that lunch hour prayer, it began with one person.

  214. One person who went and started to pray by themselves.

  215. And then eventually that one person became six people.

  216. And then eventually that six people became 10,000 people praying every day at lunch in the heart of Wall Street.

  217. And what happened was that revival started to move from city to city,

  218. from college campus to college campus.

  219. It came all the way here to the College of California that in just a few years' time

  220. would become named the University of California at Berkeley.

  221. And people, when they described that revival, they called it a year of the right hand of the Most High.

  222. Where God showed that His hand was mighty.

  223. And then if you fast forward to 1904 to 1907,

  224. the revival in Wales that swept to India and China and Korea,

  225. that revival began by people saying,

  226. Lord, bend us.

  227. Lord, bend us.

  228. Lord, send your Holy Spirit now for Jesus Christ's sake.

  229. And they prayed and prayed and prayed until the Holy Spirit came down.

  230. And it changed whole peoples and whole nations.

  231. You can ask Miriam Kim about her grandfather who suffered greatly for the gospel in Korea.

  232. And I believe it's coming straight out of her family having roots in this revival that changed that nation.

  233. Now, what I'm trying to say to you

  234. is that the hand of the Lord has been shown to be mighty

  235. at the Jordan River

  236. exactly as He showed it to be mighty at the Red Sea.

  237. And what I want us to see is that

  238. the Lord works in the same ways,

  239. in the same patterns,

  240. and with the same characteristics

  241. through all of these times of revival

  242. when He shows that His hand is mighty.

  243. And just to list a few of these characteristics

  244. that we see in each of these revivals,

  245. number one,

  246. every single one of them is a repetition of the day of Pentecost.

  247. That the Holy Spirit comes down

  248. on a whole number of people together

  249. and they become aware

  250. of a presence and a power

  251. that's above them and beyond them.

  252. They become aware of the majesty

  253. and the might of God.

  254. And they begin to sense that no human being

  255. is presiding over this meeting.

  256. That in fact,

  257. it's the Holy Spirit who's presiding,

  258. who's leading,

  259. who's directing,

  260. who's guiding.

  261. And because of that,

  262. people begin to become awake

  263. to spiritual things.

  264. Things that maybe they've heard

  265. a thousand times before,

  266. but were never really real to them.

  267. They begin to feel their power.

  268. And the second thing that happens,

  269. the second characteristic,

  270. when the Lord shows that His hand is mighty in revival,

  271. is not only does the Spirit come down,

  272. but people become awake to the glory

  273. and the holiness of God.

  274. And when they realize the holiness

  275. and the glory of God in their midst,

  276. people are filled with a sense of awe

  277. and reverence,

  278. a sense of holy fear before God.

  279. And the third characteristic of these times

  280. where God shows that His hand is mighty,

  281. is that people experience the utter purity of God.

  282. And that leads them inevitably

  283. to a deeper sense of their own sin.

  284. To see the ways in their life

  285. that they're actually fighting against God.

  286. And they begin to say with the prophet Isaiah,

  287. as they realize that,

  288. they say,

  289. woe is me,

  290. for I'm ruined,

  291. and I'm lost,

  292. and I'm unclean.

  293. People begin to cry out from their heart

  294. and say,

  295. my heart is vile,

  296. and I'm utterly unworthy.

  297. In fact,

  298. I don't believe I've ever done any good at all.

  299. We say with the Apostle Paul,

  300. any goodness I bring to God

  301. is nothing to me.

  302. It's just,

  303. it's trash,

  304. it's garbage,

  305. it's dung,

  306. it's filthy rags.

  307. One of the great hymns

  308. that came out of the Great Awakening

  309. was this great prayer that said,

  310. nothing in my hand I bring,

  311. simply to Thy cross I cling.

  312. Naked,

  313. come to Thee for dress.

  314. Helpless,

  315. look to Thee for grace.

  316. Foul,

  317. I,

  318. to the fountain fly,

  319. wash me,

  320. Savior,

  321. or I die.

  322. This great revival

  323. that broke out

  324. at the Bible conference meeting

  325. in Pyongyang

  326. in January 1907.

  327. One of the observers wrote this.

  328. He said,

  329. God came to us in Pyongyang

  330. that night

  331. with the sound of weeping.

  332. And as the prayer continued,

  333. a spirit of heaviness

  334. and sorrow for sin

  335. came down upon the audience.

  336. And over on one side,

  337. someone began to weep,

  338. and in a moment,

  339. the whole audience was weeping.

  340. And man after man would rise,

  341. confess his sins,

  342. break down and weep

  343. and throw himself to the floor

  344. and beat the floor

  345. with his fists

  346. in perfect agony of conviction.

  347. And it says that the Christians

  348. returned to their homes,

  349. taking the Pentecostal fire with them,

  350. and it spread to practically

  351. every church.

  352. Schools

  353. canceled classes for days

  354. while students

  355. wept out their wrongdoings together.

  356. We had our hearts torn

  357. again and again

  358. by the return of little articles

  359. and money

  360. that had been taken from us

  361. over the years.

  362. All through the city,

  363. people were going

  364. from house to house,

  365. confessing wrongs,

  366. returning stolen property,

  367. not only to Christians,

  368. but to non-believers.

  369. A Chinese merchant

  370. was astounded

  371. to have a Christian walk in

  372. and pay him

  373. a large sum of money

  374. he had obtained unjustly

  375. years before.

  376. The whole city

  377. was stirred.

  378. The cry went out

  379. over the city.

  380. You see,

  381. this is what happens

  382. over and over

  383. and over again

  384. when the Lord's mighty hand

  385. comes down

  386. in revival.

  387. We sense the Holy Spirit

  388. come among us.

  389. And we sense the holiness

  390. and utter glory

  391. and purity of God.

  392. And we sense

  393. within ourselves

  394. something deeply wrong.

  395. And we begin

  396. with a new honesty

  397. and a fresh expression

  398. to get that wrong

  399. out before God.

  400. And then what begins

  401. to happen

  402. as a result of that,

  403. another characteristic

  404. is that we get

  405. a clearer view

  406. of the mercy of God.

  407. We come to a clearer view

  408. of Christ crucified.

  409. Something that perhaps

  410. all of our lives

  411. we've known

  412. in a theoretical way,

  413. but we never really

  414. experienced his power.

  415. And all of a sudden,

  416. because of God's

  417. mighty hand upon us,

  418. we're melted by it.

  419. And we're broken

  420. by it.

  421. And we weep

  422. not only with a sense

  423. of sorrow,

  424. but with a sense

  425. of joy.

  426. And we say to ourselves,

  427. for God so loved

  428. the world

  429. that he gave

  430. his one and only son

  431. that whoever believes

  432. in him

  433. should not perish,

  434. but should have

  435. everlasting life.

  436. And that becomes

  437. suddenly real

  438. to people.

  439. It becomes applied

  440. to their lives

  441. and they begin

  442. to sing

  443. like Charles Wesley,

  444. another great

  445. revival hymn.

  446. He said,

  447. and can it be

  448. that I should gain

  449. an interest

  450. in the Savior's blood?

  451. Died he for me

  452. who caused his pain,

  453. for me

  454. who him to death

  455. pursued?

  456. Amazing love.

  457. How can it be

  458. that thou,

  459. my God,

  460. should die

  461. for me?

  462. People become

  463. lost in praise

  464. to the Father,

  465. Son,

  466. and Holy Spirit

  467. when the mighty hand

  468. of the Lord

  469. comes down.

  470. And I would say

  471. a last characteristic

  472. of these

  473. great times

  474. of revival

  475. is that one thing

  476. begins to absorb

  477. the church.

  478. And the church

  479. desires to

  480. be together

  481. more and more

  482. around that one thing.

  483. If you could believe it,

  484. people begin

  485. to want more

  486. church meetings.

  487. They want to get

  488. together so they can

  489. praise God more

  490. for these things

  491. and they can talk

  492. more with each other

  493. about these things

  494. and they can pray

  495. more for God

  496. to do more

  497. of these things.

  498. And the church's

  499. whole experience

  500. of time

  501. completely transforms.

  502. Whereas before,

  503. people had no time

  504. to give.

  505. Now time

  506. is forgotten.

  507. Time gets absorbed

  508. into eternity.

  509. prosperity.

  510. And people

  511. want to meet

  512. like the New Testament

  513. church met

  514. daily

  515. in the temple

  516. courts.

  517. They met until

  518. midnight.

  519. Sometimes they met

  520. until daybreak

  521. because they couldn't

  522. get enough

  523. of God.

  524. The Holy Spirit

  525. reorganizes

  526. our sense of time

  527. and causes us

  528. in these seasons

  529. of revival

  530. to experience

  531. days of heaven

  532. upon the earth

  533. and we don't

  534. want to leave.

  535. life.

  536. So what do

  537. these stones

  538. mean?

  539. They mean that

  540. God did again

  541. at the Jordan

  542. River exactly

  543. what he did

  544. at the Red Sea

  545. and why did he

  546. do that?

  547. To show us

  548. that the hand

  549. of the Lord

  550. is mighty

  551. and that the

  552. living God

  553. can come down

  554. in power

  555. among his people.

  556. And what do

  557. these stones

  558. of revival

  559. mean?

  560. They mean that

  561. God has continued

  562. to awaken his church

  563. again and again

  564. and again

  565. in the exact

  566. same way

  567. according to

  568. the same

  569. characteristics

  570. and the same

  571. patterns.

  572. Why did he do

  573. that?

  574. So that you

  575. might know

  576. that the hand

  577. of the Lord

  578. is mighty

  579. and that the

  580. living God

  581. has come down

  582. among us

  583. before and he

  584. can do it

  585. again.

  586. And so that

  587. is our simple

  588. prayer.

  589. Do it

  590. again.

  591. Lord,

  592. do it again

  593. here

  594. and now.

  595. Do it again

  596. among us

  597. and in our

  598. time.

  599. Lord,

  600. show us

  601. and show

  602. the East Bay

  603. that your

  604. hand is indeed

  605. mighty.

  606. Don't you

  607. want this?

  608. If this

  609. happened,

  610. would it not

  611. address almost

  612. all of our

  613. spiritual and

  614. moral issues?

  615. Would it not

  616. address pretty

  617. much all of our

  618. cultural and

  619. social problems?

  620. realms?

  621. If the mighty

  622. hand of the

  623. Lord was

  624. coming down

  625. from on high

  626. and the Holy

  627. Spirit was

  628. filling up and

  629. presiding over

  630. his church and

  631. life abundant

  632. was being given

  633. to God's people

  634. without measure

  635. and we were

  636. living out of a

  637. new sense of

  638. power and a

  639. new sense of

  640. awe and a new

  641. sense of humility

  642. and unity and

  643. desire to go and

  644. serve people and

  645. even suffer for the

  646. sake of other

  647. people, don't you

  648. want this?

  649. It's what God

  650. wants and we

  651. need reminding

  652. that he wants

  653. it.

  654. We need reminding

  655. that the hand of

  656. the Lord is

  657. mighty and we

  658. need reminding

  659. that the hand of

  660. the Lord is

  661. mighty when we

  662. cry out to

  663. him.

  664. I want to close

  665. just with a

  666. thought about

  667. this that says

  668. in verse 24,

  669. so all the

  670. peoples of the

  671. earth may know

  672. that the hand

  673. of the Lord is

  674. mighty and that

  675. you might fear

  676. the Lord your

  677. God forever.

  678. The Lord comes

  679. down and he

  680. shows his hand

  681. to be mighty

  682. for two reasons.

  683. Number one,

  684. that God's people

  685. would fear him

  686. all their days,

  687. that we would

  688. recognize him

  689. in his glory

  690. and his majesty

  691. and we would

  692. give to him the

  693. worship that he

  694. alone deserves.

  695. But the second

  696. reason he shows

  697. that his hand is

  698. mighty is that

  699. all peoples of

  700. the earth would

  701. know his power

  702. and his greatness.

  703. The Lord wants

  704. every person in

  705. your life to

  706. know him.

  707. Every person

  708. that you live

  709. among, every

  710. person that you

  711. work with, every

  712. person that you

  713. play with, he

  714. wants every person

  715. connected with this

  716. church to know

  717. him.

  718. He wants every

  719. person here in the

  720. Bay Area to know

  721. him.

  722. And we might say,

  723. you know, how can

  724. God possibly do

  725. that?

  726. How could he

  727. possibly bring

  728. revival to

  729. Berkeley and to

  730. Oakland and to

  731. the Bay Area?

  732. How could God

  733. make the

  734. impossible possible?

  735. And what I'm

  736. trying to do is

  737. show you that

  738. he's done it

  739. before.

  740. He's done it in

  741. other places and

  742. other times that

  743. maybe even were

  744. much more difficult

  745. than now.

  746. And I want you to

  747. notice two final

  748. details about this

  749. text in terms of

  750. his timing.

  751. When does the

  752. Lord show that

  753. his hand is

  754. mighty?

  755. Well, he shows

  756. that his hand is

  757. mighty after periods

  758. of great trial and

  759. discouragement.

  760. That in the same

  761. way, he's always

  762. brought mighty

  763. revivals to the

  764. church after seasons

  765. of great decline

  766. and decay.

  767. And think about it.

  768. God's people had

  769. been in Egypt for

  770. 400 years in

  771. bondage, in

  772. captivity, under

  773. cruelty and task

  774. masters and whips

  775. and bricks without

  776. straw.

  777. And then the mighty

  778. hand of the Lord

  779. came down and parted

  780. the waters of the

  781. Red Sea.

  782. After Egypt, God

  783. does the impossible.

  784. And he does it

  785. after the wilderness.

  786. God's people had

  787. been in this

  788. howling, barren,

  789. lifeless wasteland.

  790. They'd been

  791. experiencing hunger

  792. and thirst, been

  793. experiencing trials

  794. and temptations.

  795. They'd just

  796. experienced the

  797. death of Moses,

  798. their great leader.

  799. They're grieving.

  800. They're discouraged.

  801. And then the mighty

  802. hand of the Lord

  803. comes down and he

  804. parts the waters of

  805. the Jordan River.

  806. after the wilderness.

  807. He does the

  808. impossible.

  809. And similarly, after

  810. the church has been

  811. in Egypt and been

  812. in the wilderness,

  813. after the church has

  814. gone through these

  815. hard periods, these

  816. barren periods in the

  817. history of the church

  818. where even the people

  819. of God have lost

  820. their faith in the

  821. living God, that is

  822. when God sends his

  823. revivals.

  824. That is when his

  825. mighty hand comes

  826. down to awaken and

  827. quicken and enliven

  828. his church, to build

  829. it up and to

  830. transform society.

  831. He always does this

  832. after periods of

  833. great trial and

  834. discouragement.

  835. Anybody had any

  836. reason to feel

  837. discouraged over the

  838. past few years?

  839. That's when he likes

  840. to do this stuff.

  841. And notice that the

  842. Lord typically waits

  843. until the moment of

  844. crisis.

  845. When our back is up

  846. against the Red Sea.

  847. When we come to the

  848. borderland of the

  849. Jordan River and we

  850. have nowhere else to

  851. go.

  852. When the people of God

  853. feel hopeless and

  854. helpless, then the

  855. mighty hand of the

  856. Lord comes down.

  857. At the Red Sea, we

  858. had the mountain on

  859. one side.

  860. Right?

  861. We had a mountain on

  862. the other side.

  863. We had Pharaoh and

  864. his chariots and the

  865. army of Egypt coming

  866. from behind us and we

  867. had an uncrossable body

  868. of water in front of

  869. us.

  870. We were defenseless and

  871. doomed.

  872. The people of God were

  873. desperate and despairing.

  874. A mountain here, a

  875. mountain there, an

  876. enemy behind us, an

  877. impossible barrier before

  878. us, utterly helpless and

  879. hopeless.

  880. Shut in, shut down.

  881. The people of God crying

  882. out to him for salvation.

  883. And it's always in that

  884. moment that God acts.

  885. The mighty hand of the

  886. Lord comes down and all

  887. of a sudden the presence

  888. and power of the living

  889. God is in the midst of his

  890. people.

  891. And he's manifesting the

  892. glory and the goodness of

  893. God to all the nations.

  894. And Christ Church, I want to

  895. invite us to raise our

  896. expectations of God.

  897. I want to invite us to get

  898. down on our knees before

  899. God and to cry out to him

  900. to send revival, to do it

  901. again so that all the

  902. peoples of the earth may

  903. know that the hand of the

  904. Lord is mighty and that we

  905. might fear the Lord our God

  906. forever.

  907. forever.

  908. In the name of the Father,

  909. Son, and Holy Spirit.

  910. Amen.
