  5. Good morning.

  6. I'm Melissa Arsuniega, and I'm part of the North Berkeley Tuesday Night Community Group at the Wesolowskis.

  7. Today's scripture reading is from the book of Exodus, chapter 33, verses 12 through 18, as printed in the liturgy.

    Exodus 33:12–18

  8. A reading from the book of Exodus.

  9. Moses said to the Lord,

  10. You have been telling me, lead these people, but you have not let me know whom you will send with me.

  11. You have said, I know you by name, and you have found favor with me.

  12. If you are pleased with me, teach me your ways so I may know you and continue to find favor with you.

  13. Remember that this nation is your people.

  14. The Lord replied, my presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.

  15. Then Moses said to him, if your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.

  16. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and with your people unless you go with us?

  17. What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?

  18. And the Lord said to Moses, I will do the very thing you have asked, because I am pleased with you, and I know you by name.

  19. Then Moses said, now show me your glory.

  20. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the Lord the Lord stands forever.

  21. This week at our wonderful Wednesday gathering, we had about 20 people here, and we were talking in our adult breakout time about prayer and praying together.

  22. And I asked people to write down, you know, what's a question or a challenge that you have in your own prayers to God?

  23. And it was striking to me that out of this group of 20 people, a bunch of people mentioned the very same thing.

  24. And they said, do our prayers affect God?

  25. Do our prayers do anything?

  26. And this is so important, because this is a sermon series where we're inviting you and challenging you to think about this one word, revival.

  27. And particularly to pray this one simple prayer, revive us.

  28. But of course, why would we pray this prayer if we're not sure that our prayers affect God, if we're not sure that our prayers actually do anything?

  29. So I want to begin by saying this morning that I believe God has given us the prayers of Scripture, the prayers of Abraham, Moses, and David,

  30. the prayers of the prophets, the prayers of Jesus and the apostles, so that we might learn how to pray like them.

  31. Because God wants to be affected by those prayers.

  32. God wants to take those prayers up to himself and pour them back down upon the church and pour them back down upon the world to accomplish his purposes.

  33. And I don't think God would have given us these visions of revival, these models of revival in the Bible and in church history,

  34. unless he intended for us to be inspired by them and therefore to pray earnestly for them.

  35. And some of you, if you're new today, you might think, gosh, revival, what's he talking about?

  36. This focus seems a little bit strange.

  37. But we've reached an age in which the vast majority of church members, at least in our part of the world,

  38. have ceased to think in terms of revival at all.

  39. Up until about 1860, it was just instinctive to think in terms of revival, especially in our Reformed tradition.

  40. If you hit a period of spiritual drought, if things were not going so well in the church or in society,

  41. what was the first thing that people thought?

  42. They thought to themselves, should we not enter into a time of confession?

  43. Should we not humble ourselves?

  44. Should we not enter into a season of prayer for God to come and visit us again?

  45. But in our modern time, you know, we see the church languishing,

  46. and our first thought is we should form a committee.

  47. You know, we should host a potluck.

  48. We should play more games.

  49. But our spiritual mothers and fathers were much wiser than us,

  50. and they said, you know, why are things so bad?

  51. Why is it that we are seeing plagues and violence and drought?

  52. Why is there seemingly an increasing amount of spiritual confusion and moral decline

  53. and social division and economic crises and cultural breakdown and communal disasters?

  54. That's what they ask themselves.

  55. Why is it so bad?

  56. And why is the church not more alive to God and not more faithful to the gospel?

  57. And they thought to themselves, you know, we must have offended God.

  58. Like we collectively as a society, we must have offended God.

  59. We must have grieved him in some way.

  60. Perhaps we turned our backs on God, and so he's turned his back on us.

  61. And they thought, well, what can we do about this?

  62. And the church said, well, we, representing all the people around us,

  63. we can get down on our knees and we can ask God, please come back.

  64. Please, we're pleading with you.

  65. We're arguing with you.

  66. We're reasoning with you, God, to send your Holy Spirit and to send revival.

  67. And that's what the church would do.

  68. They would plead the promises of God.

  69. They would agonize in prayer until God heard them, until God visited them with the Holy Spirit,

  70. until God revived not only the church but the whole society around the church.

  71. And this is the pattern that's repeated over and over again in the prophets of Moses and Samuel and Elijah,

  72. and the kings like Asa and Jehoshaphat and Josiah and Hezekiah,

  73. and Ezra and Nehemiah, if you just go read the Bible, you'll see this pattern repeated,

  74. that God is affected by our prayers,

  75. and that God has designed things in such a way that he would take our prayers

  76. and he would use those to revive his people and therefore to revive the whole world.

  77. And so with that, I want to invite us to turn our attention to Moses and his great prayer for revival in Exodus chapter 33.

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  78. And this text today tells us,

  79. ask God for more.

  80. Ask God for more assurance, power, and holiness.

  81. That's what Moses' prayer is about.

  82. Ask God for more assurance, power, and holiness.

  83. What does it mean to ask God for more assurance?

  84. We've seen in these last few weeks that God withdrew his presence from the church of the Old Testament.

  85. Israel, the people of God, they had this golden calf moment,

  86. and God withdrew his presence, and in response to that, the people repented.

  87. And Moses set up this tent of meeting, and he began to pray for God to have mercy on his people,

  88. and this cloudy pillar of God's presence began to return to the church.

  89. God was beginning to answer these prayers for revival, prayers that he would return,

  90. prayers that he would not hold the sins of the church against her,

  91. and that God would not withhold his favor and withhold his face from his people.

  92. And I think Moses was extremely grateful to God for this.

  93. And I think the people of Israel were extremely grateful to God for this.

  94. They saw this cloudy pillar of God's presence come down upon the tent of meeting,

  95. and we saw last week all the people began to worship.

  96. And every person began to turn their own homes into a little tent of meeting

  97. where they would pray and they would worship God.

  98. And why were they worshiping?

  99. Because God was returning.

  100. Because God was listening to Moses and speaking to Moses.

  101. And you would think that Moses would stop here,

  102. and he would be content just to enjoy the answers to his prayers.

  103. But you can see that Moses is not satisfied,

  104. that Moses desires more,

  105. and that he in fact goes back to the tent of meeting,

  106. and he keeps on praying.

  107. And he says,

  108. Lord, what we have is not enough.

  109. And that's the essence of revival.

  110. The essence of revival is pleading for something more.

  111. It's pleading for that which is additional,

  112. and unusual,

  113. and special,

  114. and exceptional,

  115. and extraordinary.

  116. And this is not to say that we should be ungrateful to God

  117. for all the things that he's given us.

  118. We should thank God when we see the church knows who she believes,

  119. and when the church is firm in the truth,

  120. and experiencing God's blessings.

  121. We should thank God when the church is conscious of his presence,

  122. and full of the Holy Spirit,

  123. and empowered for his work,

  124. and seeing regular conversions.

  125. We should hope for that,

  126. and we should thank God for those things.

  127. But that's not revival.

  128. Revival.

  129. That's just the regular,

  130. usual,

  131. normal,

  132. ordinary state of the church.

  133. But revival goes way beyond these things.

  134. Revival is something startling,

  135. something amazing,

  136. something extraordinary.

  137. And if I don't draw your attention to that,

  138. you won't be concerned about it,

  139. and you won't know that you need to pray for it.

  140. You might think to yourself,

  141. well,

  142. things are going fine.

  143. God is blessing us.

  144. We should just keep on as we are.

  145. Revival is not really necessary.

  146. And Moses himself could have settled for that.

  147. But we see here that he pleads for more.

  148. And what did Moses pray for?

  149. Well,

  150. he prays for that same thing

  151. that men and women always pray for

  152. when they feel a burden for revival.

  153. This characteristic prayer

  154. that people who are praying for

  155. and preparing for revival,

  156. they pray this way.

  157. And the first thing Moses prays for

  158. is he asks for assurance.

  159. He asks God for assurance.

  160. And he says in verse 13,

  161. if you are pleased with me,

  162. teach me your ways

  163. so I may know you

  164. and continue to find favor with you.

  165. Remember that this nation

  166. is your people.

  167. Now that sounds strange

  168. because last week we saw

  169. that Moses was spoken to by God

  170. face to face

  171. and person to person

  172. like a friend.

  173. So doesn't Moses already know God?

  174. Doesn't he already have the favor of God?

  175. And the reality is

  176. that Moses wants to know God more.

  177. He wants to experience

  178. the favor of God more.

  179. He's not content with mere knowledge

  180. that God has accepted him

  181. or that God cares for him.

  182. He knows that.

  183. He knows God's concern

  184. and he knows God's kindness.

  185. But what he wants

  186. is a deeper

  187. and a fuller knowledge of God.

  188. He wants more personal

  189. and direct experience

  190. that God really loves him.

  191. It's like a child.

  192. A child might know

  193. that you love them

  194. but that child needs to hear from you.

  195. You are my pride and joy.

  196. I love you to the moon and back.

  197. Right?

  198. A child desperately needs to hear those words

  199. and that's what Moses is praying for.

  200. Lord, press your love so deep into my heart

  201. that I'm confident of it,

  202. that I'm assured of it.

  203. And Moses is like a,

  204. I imagine him like a little child

  205. playing at the edge of the water on the beach

  206. and he's praying,

  207. Lord, I want to know

  208. the mighty ocean depths

  209. of your love for me.

  210. I'm not content to stay here in the shallows.

  211. Let me know beyond any doubt

  212. how vast

  213. and unmeasured

  214. and boundless

  215. is the ocean

  216. of your deep, deep love for me.

  217. And if even Moses had to pray that,

  218. how much more do you and I

  219. need to pray for this?

  220. But Moses doesn't stop there.

  221. He's like a daring child, right?

  222. A daring child doesn't just ask for one thing.

  223. They keep going

  224. and he asks God for more

  225. and he says in verse 13,

  226. he says,

  227. Lord, teach me your ways.

  228. Now that's also strange

  229. because Moses of all people,

  230. does he not know the ways of God?

  231. What does this mean?

  232. He's saying,

  233. Lord, show me your purposes

  234. and your plans.

  235. You've told us,

  236. you've told Israel

  237. that we can go forward

  238. into the promised land

  239. without you.

  240. That we can go ahead

  241. and have all the gifts

  242. without the giver.

  243. That we can go

  244. and have this kingdom

  245. without the king.

  246. But Lord,

  247. who can live with that?

  248. You've got to come with us.

  249. You've made promises to us.

  250. You've sworn oath to us.

  251. You've made a covenant

  252. commitment to us.

  253. So Moses is saying,

  254. Lord, let me in.

  255. Teach me your ways.

  256. Show me your thoughts

  257. and your mind.

  258. I want to know

  259. what your secret plans are for us.

  260. Are you coming with us or not?

  261. Is what he says.

  262. And don't we need

  263. this kind of assurance from God?

  264. Don't we need this assurance

  265. of his deep love for us?

  266. I mean, we know that God

  267. sent his son to die on the cross,

  268. but doesn't that need

  269. to be applied to me

  270. so that I experience it

  271. and so that I feel it

  272. in my bones?

  273. Don't we need this assurance

  274. that God is going with us?

  275. Yes, he's given his spirit

  276. to the church,

  277. but is he going to fill us?

  278. Is he going to enable us

  279. to move forward

  280. into the future together

  281. at Christ Church?

  282. Yes, of course,

  283. we all need this assurance.

  284. It's one thing to know

  285. about the love of God

  286. and the presence of God,

  287. but it's another thing

  288. to know it,

  289. to experience it,

  290. to feel it,

  291. to live in it.

  292. Last night or this morning

  293. as we were preparing ourselves

  294. to come here

  295. and meet with God,

  296. did you offer any special prayer

  297. that God might reveal

  298. more of his love to us today?

  299. That he might let us know

  300. in some special way

  301. that he's going to be here

  302. with us?

  303. Or did we just kind of show up

  304. assuming that he'll do it

  305. without asking for it?

  306. You see, Moses teaches us

  307. how to pray for revival.

  308. He says,

  309. Lord, on the basis of your favor,

  310. on the basis of your mercy

  311. and your grace,

  312. and given everything

  313. that you've done for us,

  314. everything you've spoken to us,

  315. I want to humbly ask

  316. and yet boldly ask for more.

  317. Will you please

  318. build us up

  319. in a new confidence

  320. and a fresh certainty

  321. and a blessed assurance

  322. of your affections for us?

  323. And won't you show us

  324. how much we matter to you?

  325. And won't you please

  326. reveal to us

  327. your intentions

  328. and your specific purposes

  329. for us,

  330. your people?

  331. Friends,

  332. that type of praying

  333. affects God.

  334. That is the type of praying

  335. that God wants to hear

  336. and cause him to move

  337. and pour himself out

  338. and answer to our prayers,

  339. and it's what he did

  340. for Moses in verse 14.

  341. It says,

  342. the Lord replied,

  343. my presence will go with you

  344. and I will give you rest.

  345. Friends,

  346. are you feeling this desire

  347. to be let into God's heart?

  348. Are you wanting to know

  349. whether or not

  350. God is going to do

  351. something great for us

  352. here in the East Bay?

  353. Are you wanting to know,

  354. Lord,

  355. are you going to revive us

  356. or not?

  357. Are you going to revive

  358. your church

  359. with a capital C

  360. or not?

  361. Are you going to revive

  362. the city or not?

  363. Teach me your ways.

  364. Are you going with us

  365. or not?

  366. What's it going to be,

  367. Lord?

  368. That's the kind of praying

  369. that we're meant to be doing

  370. as a people.

  371. So we should ask for more.

  372. We should ask for more assurance

  373. and we shouldn't stop there.

  374. We should ask for more assurance

  375. and we should ask for more power.

  376. So verse 15,

  377. Moses says to the Lord,

  378. if your presence does not go with us,

  379. then do not send us up from here.

  380. And why does Moses say this?

  381. Does he not hear God's answer

  382. to his prayer in the previous verse?

  383. See, he does hear it,

  384. but the problem there in verse 14

  385. is that God said,

  386. my presence will go with you singular.

  387. It doesn't say my presence

  388. will go with y'all plural

  389. or you's guys,

  390. depending on where you're from.

  391. And you see,

  392. Moses doesn't just want to personally

  393. be blessed as an individual.

  394. Moses is praying for the church.

  395. He's concerned to stress

  396. the collective good of God's people.

  397. He says in verse 13,

  398. remember that this nation

  399. is your people.

  400. And do we pray in the plural like that?

  401. Are we praying for me

  402. or will you go with me

  403. or will you go with us?

  404. And you see,

  405. the other problem in verse 14

  406. is that the Lord said,

  407. I will give you rest.

  408. My presence will go with you

  409. and I will give you rest.

  410. And that word rest

  411. got Moses praying for more

  412. because that phrase,

  413. I will give you rest,

  414. can be translated as

  415. I will lighten your burden.

  416. And that's the phrase

  417. continually found in the context

  418. where God is bringing relief

  419. to Israel

  420. and giving her rest

  421. from the burden of her enemies.

  422. And this gets Moses thinking

  423. about the great difficulties

  424. that are facing the people of God.

  425. It gets him thinking

  426. about the great task

  427. that lays before them

  428. to go in and claim

  429. the promised land,

  430. the task to go

  431. and set up the kingdom of God

  432. in the midst of hostile territory.

  433. And you see,

  434. you got to remember

  435. that this is a little ragtag group

  436. of nomadic people.

  437. They've been slaves for 400 years.

  438. They've been wandering

  439. without a home for 40 years.

  440. They're about to cross

  441. into enemy territory

  442. completely weak

  443. and vulnerable

  444. and defenseless.

  445. They're about to be attacked

  446. by strong and armed

  447. and fortified people

  448. and this is overwhelming.

  449. This is a terrifying reality

  450. for Moses.

  451. He's meditating

  452. on the magnitude

  453. and the immense problem

  454. that confronts

  455. the people of God,

  456. the burden of her enemies.

  457. And so he says,

  458. Lord, do not send us

  459. without your supernatural power,

  460. without the power

  461. of your presence

  462. because we are going

  463. to get crushed.

  464. We're going to be destroyed.

  465. We're going to be annihilated

  466. without your strength

  467. and without your might

  468. and without your authority

  469. going with us.

  470. Now some of us today

  471. might say,

  472. well it's a good thing

  473. that the church

  474. today doesn't have

  475. such big problems

  476. and such scary enemies.

  477. And if that's you,

  478. I want to encourage you

  479. to read the newspaper

  480. and to read the New Testament

  481. because we're told

  482. that the church

  483. has three great enemies.

  484. The world,

  485. the flesh,

  486. and the devil.

  487. Think for a moment

  488. about our enemies,

  489. the world,

  490. and the flesh.

  491. You're probably aware

  492. of the stats

  493. about church decline

  494. in the western world

  495. over the past 150 years.

  496. You're probably aware

  497. that church membership

  498. in the United States

  499. has gone down sharply

  500. over the last two decades,

  501. roughly the lifespan

  502. of Christ's church.

  503. I won't bore you

  504. with all the data this morning.

  505. You can read the polls.

  506. You probably read

  507. about the rise

  508. of the nuns,

  509. N-O-N-E-S,

  510. people who no longer

  511. have a religious identity

  512. or a religious group affiliation.

  513. You're probably aware

  514. of this movement

  515. in the Protestant world

  516. of deconstruction

  517. and deconversion.

  518. And, you know,

  519. those things didn't just happen

  520. as a result

  521. of the past few years.

  522. The past few years

  523. have not been

  524. the cause of these things.

  525. They've just revealed to us

  526. the depths of the problem

  527. of these things.

  528. It showed us

  529. how much power

  530. the world is actually

  531. exerting over the church.

  532. It showed us

  533. how the world

  534. is conforming us

  535. to its patterns

  536. and squeezing us

  537. into its mold.

  538. It showed us

  539. in a fresh way

  540. how the world

  541. is pulling us,

  542. the church,

  543. down into its secularity

  544. and its functional atheism

  545. and its godlessness.

  546. Listen to these words

  547. from the apostle

  548. in his epistle

  549. to the Romans,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  550. chapter 1.

  551. He says,

  552. For although they knew God,

  553. they neither glorified him

  554. as God

  555. nor gave thanks to him,

  556. but their thinking

  557. became futile

  558. and their foolish hearts

  559. were darkened.

  560. They exchanged the truth

  561. about God for a lie

  562. and worshipped and served

  563. created things

  564. rather than the creator.

  565. And the result of all this

  566. is that they become

  567. filled with every kind

  568. of wickedness,

  569. evil, greed,

  570. and depravity.

  571. They are full of envy,

  572. murder, strife,

  573. deceit, and malice.

  574. They are gossips,

  575. slanderers,

  576. God-haters,

  577. insolent,

  578. arrogant,

  579. and boastful.

  580. They invent ways

  581. of doing evil.

  582. They disobey their parents.

  583. They have no understanding,

  584. no fidelity,

  585. no love,

  586. no mercy.

  587. Now that's meant

  588. to be a description

  589. of the world,

  590. but does that not

  591. more and more

  592. apply to the church

  593. of North America?

  594. No love,

  595. no mercy.

  596. We're getting pulled down

  597. by this great enemy

  598. and can't you see

  599. our need for God's

  600. supernatural power

  601. in the church?

  602. Or what about

  603. our other great enemy,

  604. the devil?

  605. Jesus taught us to pray,

  606. deliver us from the evil one.

  607. And his lead disciple,

  608. Peter,

  609. says this in his first epistle.

  610. He says,

  611. be alert and of sober mind.

  612. Your enemy prowls around

  613. like a roaring lion,

  614. seeking those

  615. whom he might devour.

  616. The apostle Paul says

  617. in Ephesians 6,

  618. he says,

  619. take your stand

  620. against the devil

  621. and his schemes.

  622. For our struggle

  623. is not against flesh

  624. and blood,

  625. but our struggle

  626. is against rulers

  627. and against authorities.

  628. It's against dark powers.

  629. It's against spiritual forces

  630. of evil

  631. in high places.

  632. Christchurch,

  633. what if we believe that?

  634. Would we not tremble

  635. like Moses?

  636. Would we not pray

  637. more like Moses?

  638. Would we not see

  639. our need for God

  640. to come down

  641. in his power

  642. and to lighten

  643. our burden

  644. and give us rest

  645. from our enemies?

  646. We live in the most

  647. unchurched region

  648. of the United States

  649. of America

  650. and we've been given

  651. the one task

  652. of making disciples

  653. of Jesus Christ

  654. here in this place.

  655. Do you think

  656. that we can do that

  657. in our own resources

  658. and with our own power?

  659. You see,

  660. Moses humbles himself

  661. and he realizes

  662. his great weakness

  663. and his inability

  664. and he says to God,

  665. who am I

  666. to meet this situation?

  667. Lord,

  668. I'm not enough.

  669. I'm not,

  670. I'm totally inadequate.

  671. And he says,

  672. Lord,

  673. I'm not going to take

  674. another step

  675. unless I know

  676. that the power

  677. of your presence

  678. is going to go with us.

  679. I'm not going to go on.

  680. I'm not going to even

  681. attempt to do

  682. one more thing

  683. without you.

  684. He's pleading

  685. for an unusual

  686. manifestation

  687. of God's

  688. supernatural power.

  689. And if we

  690. as a church

  691. in North America

  692. are confident

  693. in ourselves

  694. and we're proud

  695. of our abilities,

  696. then number one,

  697. we don't know

  698. our enemies

  699. and number two,

  700. we don't know

  701. ourselves.

  702. and it's

  703. unless we

  704. become aware

  705. of our impotence,

  706. of our weakness,

  707. of our desperate

  708. dependence on God

  709. and his power

  710. to carry out

  711. his mission,

  712. then we simply

  713. won't pray for it.

  714. The Apostle Paul

  715. writes this

  716. in 1 Thessalonians 1.

  717. He says,

  718. our gospel

  719. came to you

  720. not simply

  721. with words

  722. but also

  723. with power

  724. and with the Holy Spirit

  725. and with deep

  726. conviction.

  727. Now,

  728. do you think

  729. the Apostle Paul

  730. just rolled up

  731. into that

  732. Greco-Roman

  733. pagan city

  734. of Thessalonica

  735. and he

  736. just kind of

  737. didn't pray

  738. for anything

  739. and stuff

  740. started to happen?

  741. No,

  742. I imagine

  743. him agonizing

  744. in prayer

  745. beforehand

  746. just like

  747. Jesus

  748. agonized

  749. in prayer

  750. before every

  751. great act

  752. of his ministry

  753. and I imagine

  754. Paul saying,

  755. Lord,

  756. bring your gospel

  757. to this place

  758. and to these people

  759. with power

  760. and with the Holy Spirit

  761. and with deep

  762. conviction.

  763. The Apostle

  764. also writes

  765. in 1 Corinthians 2,

  766. he says,

  767. I came to you,

  768. I came to Corinth

  769. in weakness

  770. and with great

  771. fear

  772. and trembling

  773. and my message

  774. and my preaching

  775. were not with wise

  776. and persuasive words

  777. but with a demonstration

  778. of the Spirit's power

  779. so that your faith

  780. might not rest

  781. on human wisdom

  782. but on God's power.

  783. How in the world

  784. did his message

  785. of Christ crucified

  786. penetrate

  787. and transform

  788. that pagan city,

  789. that port city

  790. of Corinth?

  791. Don't we think

  792. the Apostle

  793. and some of his friends

  794. were agonizing

  795. in prayer

  796. and saying,

  797. Lord,

  798. won't you please,

  799. please,

  800. please accompany

  801. the message,

  802. accompany the preaching

  803. of your gospel

  804. with a demonstration

  805. of your Spirit's power.

  806. And oh,

  807. how the church

  808. needs to relearn

  809. how to pray

  810. for power.

  811. It's the reason

  812. we're so weak

  813. because we haven't

  814. learned to pray

  815. and need to pray

  816. for power.

  817. But I would suggest

  818. you shouldn't stop there.

  819. Ask God for more.

  820. Ask Him for more assurance

  821. and ask Him

  822. for more power.

  823. And the last thing

  824. I want to say

  825. is ask Him

  826. for more holiness.

  827. Revival's all about

  828. asking God

  829. for more holiness.

  830. In our ordinary

  831. conversations

  832. at home

  833. or at work

  834. or at school,

  835. we often express

  836. our urgency

  837. to get something

  838. or to get something

  839. done by setting up

  840. reasons why

  841. this other person

  842. should do this thing

  843. for us.

  844. Right?

  845. We might even

  846. seek the advice

  847. of other people

  848. or plan beforehand

  849. what we want to say

  850. in our conversation.

  851. And Moses is kind of

  852. like that.

  853. He's like a lawyer

  854. who's gone to court

  855. and he's building

  856. this great case

  857. before God,

  858. the judge,

  859. and he's teaching us

  860. that we too

  861. should pray like this.

  862. How do we communicate

  863. our petitions to God

  864. with the kind of intensity

  865. and the persuasive

  866. urgency of Moses?

  867. His first step

  868. is he says,

  869. God,

  870. I want to draw

  871. your attention

  872. to our own needs

  873. and desires.

  874. Lord,

  875. we want to know you more.

  876. We want to experience

  877. your favor

  878. and your pleasure.

  879. We want to be assured

  880. that you are going

  881. to go with us.

  882. And the second case

  883. that he makes,

  884. the second step

  885. in his argument

  886. is that he says,

  887. God,

  888. I want to draw

  889. your attention

  890. to your people.

  891. Lord,

  892. remember that this nation

  893. is your special people.

  894. And send us,

  895. Lord,

  896. with your power

  897. and the power

  898. of your presence

  899. because he knows

  900. that the Israelites

  901. are not just

  902. an ordinary people,

  903. that they're the apple

  904. of God's eye.

  905. They're dear

  906. to his heart.

  907. He says,

  908. Lord,

  909. I want you to focus

  910. on the special character

  911. of your people.

  912. Do not let us face

  913. our powerful enemies

  914. without your superior power.

  915. But then Moses

  916. takes his urgent prayer

  917. one step forward.

  918. Actually,

  919. two steps forward.

  920. We'll see the next step

  921. next week.

  922. But he takes it

  923. one step forward

  924. and this third step,

  925. he draws his attention

  926. to God's glory

  927. among the nations.

  928. And he says this

  929. in verse 16.

  930. He says,

  931. How will anyone know

  932. that you are pleased

  933. with me

  934. and with your people

  935. unless you go with us?

  936. What else

  937. will distinguish me

  938. and your people

  939. from all the other people

  940. on the face of the earth?

  941. Who is anyone?

  942. It's all the peoples,

  943. all the nations

  944. of the earth.

  945. And Moses said,

  946. How are they going

  947. to know

  948. that we are

  949. the people

  950. of your pleasure,

  951. that we are the people

  952. of your favor

  953. and your grace?

  954. The way they're going

  955. to come to know that

  956. is because you,

  957. Lord,

  958. distinguish us.

  959. You make us

  960. a different people

  961. and a distinct people.

  962. They'll know it,

  963. Lord,

  964. when they see

  965. that you separated us,

  966. you set us apart,

  967. you made us holy.

  968. They'll come to know you

  969. when they see

  970. that we've come

  971. to share

  972. in the honor

  973. and the glory

  974. of your holiness.

  975. And that's what

  976. revival's all about.

  977. Lord,

  978. if you allow

  979. your people

  980. to be diminished

  981. by the nations

  982. or to be assimilated

  983. into the nations,

  984. that is going to bring

  985. about an unacceptable result

  986. for your reputation.

  987. But,

  988. the nations of the earth

  989. will come to know you

  990. and they'll come

  991. to know your glory

  992. when they see

  993. your holiness

  994. reflected in the distinct

  995. and distinguished holiness

  996. of your people.

  997. When they come

  998. to experience

  999. our holy lives

  1000. individually

  1001. and our holy character

  1002. collectively.

1003. And this is a prayer

  1004. that the church

  1005. should be

  1006. as she's

  1007. meant to be.

  1008. Lord,

  1009. make your church

  1010. distinguished.

  1011. Make your church

  1012. set apart.

  1013. Make your church

  1014. unique.

  1015. Robert Murray McShane

  1016. is a great

  1017. Scottish pastor

  1018. and preacher

  1019. and he prayed

  1020. this prayer.

  1021. He said,

  1022. Lord,

  1023. make me as holy

  1024. as a pardoned sinner

  1025. can be made.

  1026. And that's become

  1027. my prayer for me

  1028. and for my family.

  1029. It's become my prayer

  1030. for our church.

  1031. Lord,

  1032. make us as holy

  1033. as pardoned sinners

  1034. can be made.

  1035. Lord,

  1036. make it clear

1037. that we are not just

  1038. one among

  1039. many peoples

  1040. and many nations

  1041. in the world,

  1042. but make it clear

1043. that we are the people

  1044. who are blessed

  1045. by your pleasure

  1046. and your favor

  1047. and your grace.

  1048. Lord,

  1049. make it clear

  1050. that we belong

  1051. to a holy

  1052. and distinguished

  1053. God.

  1054. And make us

  1055. so different,

  1056. so distinct,

  1057. so distinguished

  1058. that it will arrest

  1059. the attention

1060. of the rest of the world

  1061. and they will come

  1062. to see the glory

  1063. of your holiness

  1064. expressed in us.

  1065. Christ Church,

  1066. how different are we

  1067. than other agencies

  1068. other bodies,

  1069. other institutions?

  1070. Is it clear

  1071. to them that,

  1072. to other people

  1073. that we're more

  1074. than just nice people

  1075. or respectable people

  1076. or likable people,

  1077. but that we're

  1078. holy people?

  1079. Is it clear

  1080. that we're more

1081. than just a social club

  1082. or a community organization

  1083. or a political

  1084. affinity group?

  1085. Do people

  1086. look at us

  1087. and say,

  1088. we don't really know

  1089. what's going on

  1090. over there,

  1091. but we know

  1092. that what's going on

1093. is not of human beings,

  1094. it's of God.

  1095. In Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1096. shortly after Pentecost,

  1097. this little church

  1098. is facing

  1099. great difficulty

  1100. and they're experiencing

  1101. incredible resistance

  1102. to the gospel.

  1103. People are being

  1104. thrown in jail

  1105. and threatened

  1106. with execution

  1107. for preaching

  1108. the gospel.

  1109. And so what does

  1110. the church do?

  1111. the church gets together

1112. and has a prayer meeting

  1113. and they say,

  1114. Lord,

  1115. do something special.

  1116. Do something extraordinary.

  1117. Distinguish us

  1118. and glorify yourself

  1119. among the nations

  1120. through us.

  1121. And what happens?

  1122. The Holy Spirit

  1123. came down.

  1124. The Holy Spirit

  1125. was poured out.

  1126. And that whole place,

  1127. it says,

  1128. was shaken.

1129. And all the people there,

  1130. they were shaken

  1131. by the presence

  1132. of the Holy Spirit

  1133. in their midst.

1134. Is that how we're praying?

  1135. Lord,

  1136. distinguish us

  1137. by your Holy Spirit.

  1138. Lord,

  1139. distinguish us

  1140. by your Spirit

  1141. of holiness

  1142. in us.

  1143. Because that's the prayer

  1144. we know God likes

  1145. to answer.

1146. We know that's the prayer

  1147. God likes to have

  1148. affect him

  1149. and likes to use

  1150. to affect the world

  1151. because we're told

  1152. in verse 17,

1153. the Lord said to Moses,

1154. I will do this very thing

  1155. you've asked

  1156. because I am pleased

  1157. with you

  1158. and I know you

  1159. by name.

  1160. Christ Church,

  1161. may we ask

  1162. for more assurance,

  1163. more power,

  1164. and more holiness.

  1165. And may we ask

  1166. with confidence

  1167. knowing that God

  1168. wants to give us

  1169. this very thing

  1170. because he's pleased

  1171. with us

  1172. and he knows us

  1173. by name.

1174. In the name of the Father,

  1175. Son, and Holy Spirit.

  1176. Amen.
