  5. Good morning.

  6. I am Joan Benson, and I'm part of the North Berkeley Community Group and Women Reading Women.

  7. Today's scripture reading is from the book of Exodus, chapter 33, verses 15 to 23, and

    Exodus 33:15–23

  8. from Paul's second letter to the Corinthians, chapter 3, verse 18, as printed in the liturgy.

  9. Exodus 33, 15.

  10. Then Moses said to him, if your presence does not go with us, do not send us up from here.

  11. How will anyone know that you are pleased with me and your people unless you go with us?

  12. What else will distinguish me and your people from all the other people on the face of the earth?

  13. And the Lord said to Moses, I will do the very thing you have asked because I am pleased with you and I know you by name.

  14. Then Moses said, now show me your glory.

  15. And the Lord said, I will cause, excuse me, all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim my name, the Lord, in your presence.

  16. I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

  17. But he said, you cannot see my face, for no one may see me and live.

  18. Then the Lord said, there is a place near me where you may stand on a rock.

  19. When my glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft in the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by.

  20. Then I will remove my hand, and you will see my back, but my face bids not be seen.

  21. The grass withers, the flowers fall, but the word of God stands forever.

  22. And now a reading from Paul's second epistle to the Corinthians.

  23. Second Corinthians 3, 18.

  24. And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory,

  25. which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.

  26. This is the word of the Lord.

  27. Thanks be to God.

  28. Well, thank you for that scripture reading, Joan, and good morning, Christ Church.

  29. My name is Andrew, and one of the pastors here.

  30. I was away last weekend on vacation with my family, but we're glad to be back.

  31. Glad to be back worshiping with our church family.

  32. Will you join me in prayer?

  33. Lord God, we ask this morning that in the preaching of your word, you would allow us to see what you want us to see.

  34. That you would allow us to see you, and not just see you, but behold you, oh God.

  35. One thing have I desired of the Lord.

  36. That will I seek after.

  37. That I will dwell in the house of the Lord.

  38. All the days of my life, and behold the beauty of the Lord.

  39. And inquire in his temple.

  40. That's what we want to see, oh God.

  41. We want to behold your glory.

  42. We thank you that you are the kind of God who has revealed that glory to us.

  43. Full of grace and truth in your son, Jesus Christ.

  44. Be honored in the preaching of your word, in the administration of the sacraments, in our fellowship here today, oh God.

  45. We pray in Jesus' name.

  46. Amen.

  47. Amen.

  48. All right, so we're continuing our series here.

  49. This mini-series in Exodus chapters 32 to 34, right?

    Exodus 32 chapter mention

  50. We're looking at this first great national rebellion.

  51. The infamous incident of the golden calf turned into the first great national revival in history.

  52. All right, so now what I want to do is I want to reset where we are in the story.

  53. Remember, God has delivered his Hebrew people out of 400 years of slavery in Egypt, right?

  54. And he's brought them through the Red Sea to this holy mountain.

  55. And this mountain is called Mount Horeb, also known as Mount Sinai.

  56. Now, this is a special mountain, all right?

  57. This is the same mountain where an 80-year-old refugee and shepherd named Moses first encountered Yahweh, the living God, in an unburning bush.

  58. You can read about that in Exodus chapter 3.

    Exodus 3 chapter mention

  59. So this is holy ground where we are.

  60. God has told Moses all the way back then at the unburning bush that he's heard his people's cries, right?

  61. And he tells Moses that he wants to use him to deliver his people and to unite them to himself in a covenant bond.

  62. And here we are now in Exodus chapter 33, and God has done exactly what he said he was going to do.

    Exodus 33 chapter mention

  63. He's brought them back to this mountain because he wants to now ratify his covenant union with them.

  64. He wants to bring them back to this holy site, like a sacred, nostalgic wedding venue.

  65. Only this time, he's not manifesting himself in some little unburning bush.

  66. The whole mountain is on fire, and there's a dark cloud, and there's rumblings of thunder and lightning,

  67. and the presence of God here is undeniable.

  68. It's unmistakable that God is here, and the people dare not approach this mountain.

  69. So that's the scene, right?

  70. And the people dare not approach, but God invites Moses up the mountain.

  71. And so Moses goes up the mountain, and for 40 days, God reveals to Moses his detailed vision

  72. for what he wants their union and their communion to look like as a family.

  73. He's basically saying to Moses, this is the kind of beautiful home

  74. and the kind of wonderful life and dwelling place I'm preparing for our family that I want us to enjoy.

  75. But what happens when Moses is on the mountain after 40 days?

  76. People grow impatient, right?

  77. And at the very moment that God is detailing his plans to be intimately present with them,

  78. they seek to force his presence and harness his power amongst themselves with the golden calf idol.

  79. And God's heart breaks, and his anger burns, like with all the jealousy of a husband

  80. who's only ever had eyes for his bride.

  81. A husband who's been excitedly making all these plans for a beautiful life together with his precious bride.

  82. And so God, he now desires to just wipe this people out, to just forsake his plan of union with them.

  83. Just give them over to their new lover, give them over to their own self-destruction.

  84. And he says, I'm just going to make a new nation out of you, Moses.

  85. But what does Moses do?

  86. He intercedes.

  87. He pleads.

  88. He says, but God, remember your promise.

  89. And the crazy thing is, God relents.

  90. He hears Moses' prayer, and he relents.

  91. But still, we have this problem.

  92. God does not want to dwell with this unfaithful people anymore.

  93. He says, okay, I'm still going to let you live.

  94. I'm still even going to let you go into the land flowing with milk and honey,

  95. this promised land that I promised to send you into.

  96. But I'm not going to go with you.

  97. I'm not going to be present with you, because you are a stiff-necked people.

  98. And I might destroy you on the way.

  99. And so what happens?

  100. The people mourn, and they strip off their ornaments.

  101. Because of this great conundrum that their greatest need, the presence of God,

  102. has now become their greatest threat at the same time.

  103. Because, like, what is the promised land apart from the presence of God?

  104. So what Moses does is he pitches a tent.

  105. He pitches a tent far outside the camp.

  106. Not among the people, but far outside the camp.

  107. And amazingly, graciously, the presence of God in a cloud descends on that tent.

  108. And he still meets with Moses.

  109. He still meets with his people.

  110. Even says that he speaks to Moses as a friend, face to face, mouth to mouth.

  111. And as the people of God see the presence of God descend upon this tent,

  112. they are filled with worship.

  113. Because maybe they are not doomed after all.

  114. Now it is in this tense of meeting that we find ourselves today in this passage.

  115. Where Moses continues to intercede for his people who are still at odds with God.

  116. And Moses says, you've told me to lead these people, God.

  117. But who's going to go with me?

  118. And God says, well, I will go with you.

  119. My presence will go with you, Moses.

  120. But Moses says, no, but unless you go with us.

  121. With all of us.

  122. What will distinguish me and your people amongst all the nations?

  123. And this is where we left off last week.

  124. In verse 17.

  125. Where God graciously says to Moses, okay.

  126. Okay, I will.

  127. He says, I will do the very thing you have asked.

  128. Because I am pleased with you.

  129. And I know you by name.

  130. Now if we don't grasp how crazy this is, we need to read this again.

  131. This is crazy if you think about it.

  132. The intercession and pleading of Moses has brought God from going,

  133. I'm going to wipe them out.

  134. To, oh, I'm going to let them go into the promised land,

  135. but I'm not going to be with them.

  136. To, now I'm going to be with them in my fullness and not destroy them.

  137. Isn't that incredible?

  138. That the prayers and the pleas of Moses would be heard and answered by God.

  139. When everything that Moses asked for seemed so contrary to what his people deserved,

  140. God granted his request.

  141. Here in verse 17, the creator of the universe says to a mere mortal,

  142. I will do the very thing you have asked.

  143. Because I am pleased with you.

  144. And I know you by name.

  145. Wow, right?

  146. Can you imagine if God said that to you?

  147. I am so pleased with you.

  148. And we have so personal a relationship that I will do the very thing you have asked.

  149. It's like a blank check from the almighty God on high.

  150. Now, if you had this many requests granted to you by God,

  151. seemingly impossible requests granted to you by this God

  152. who also just told you that he is pleased with you and he knows you by name,

  153. what would you ask for next?

  154. What would you ask for next?

  155. If God wrote you like this blank check and your relationship with him was so deep,

  156. so personal, so full of trust and confidence,

  157. if God said to you,

  158. I would do the very thing you ask because I am pleased with you,

  159. what would you ask for next?

  160. Instant retirement?

  161. Impeccable health?

  162. Your soulmate?

  163. The picture of perfect family, eternal life, liberty, and happiness?

  164. What would you ask for?

  165. It's kind of hard to even imagine, right?

  166. Like the most awesome thing we could think of probably seems too small a thing to ask for

  167. with such a blank check from God, right?

  168. But just because this question is hard to answer doesn't mean we should give up on considering

  169. whether there might be a right answer.

  170. Like what is the ultimate thing we could possibly ask of God,

  171. especially if we knew he was pleased with us and knew us by name and had just promised to be present with us.

  172. What more could we possibly ask for?

  173. This morning, I think God wants us to consider the things that our hearts presently desire.

  174. And I think God wants to show us what our hearts were made to rightly desire.

  175. And this is so key to our understanding of revival.

  176. Revival is all about our hearts' desires and returning to the purest and highest of possible desires.

  177. Far from our culture's insistence that the heart just wants what it wants.

  178. Revival comes when the heart wants what God wants it to want.

  179. When we pray fervently, with sincerity, thy kingdom come, thy will be done.

  180. This is what God wants to show us today.

  181. The heart of someone with an intimate relationship with God.

  182. The heart of someone who is so convinced that God loves them,

  183. so convinced that God cares for them and listens to them and is pleased with them

  184. and will answer their prayers.

  185. The heart of someone with a blank check from God.

  186. What we see in our passage today in the person of Moses

  187. is a man who had for 80 years lived without knowing the one true God of the universe.

  188. And yet had come to experience the surprising defeat of the greatest empire in the world,

  189. the parting of the Red Sea, manna and quail from heaven, water from a rock,

  190. affirmative answers to his impossible prayer requests,

  191. and a face-to-face conversational relationship with the living God

  192. who also says to him,

  193. I will do the very thing you have asked because I am pleased with you.

  194. So basically here we have in Moses a man with every reason to believe

  195. that he is loved and cared for by God

  196. and every reason to believe that he has the very ear of God.

  197. He's a man truly convinced that God is pleased with him

  198. and will do the very thing he's asked.

  199. So what does he ask for?

  200. Verse 18.

  201. Then Moses said,

  202. Now show me your glory.

  203. Now show me your glory.

  204. Or more literally in the Hebrew,

  205. Cause me to see,

  206. Cause me to see your glory.

  207. What does this man ask for?

  208. Who's been given deliverance that he and his people don't deserve,

  209. forgiveness that they don't deserve,

  210. sustenance they don't deserve,

  211. prayer requests answered that they don't deserve,

  212. a promised land they don't deserve,

  213. God's very presence that they don't deserve.

  214. What do you ask for when you have it all,

  215. even the affirmation of God and his promise to answer your prayers?

  216. What do you ask of this kind of a God?

  217. You ask him for more of him.

  218. You ask for more of him,

  219. to see more of him,

  220. to know more of him,

  221. to experience more of him

  222. in all his inexhaustible fullness.

  223. You ask to go deeper

  224. into the bottomless well of living water

  225. for fresh experiences of him

  226. and all his goodness that are new

  227. every single morning.

  228. That's what Moses asked for.

  229. when he asked to see the glory of God.

  230. And that is the primal plea

  231. and the burning pursuit

  232. that catalyzes every revival,

  233. a hunger and a thirst

  234. for nothing but God and God alone.

  235. As King David said in Psalm 27,

  236. one thing have I desired of the Lord

  237. that will I seek after,

  238. that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

  239. all the days of my life,

  240. to behold the beauty,

  241. the beauty of the Lord

  242. and to inquire in his temple.

  243. So with the rest of our time today,

  244. we're going to look more closely

  245. at Moses' bold request

  246. and God's balanced response.

  247. And the big idea is this,

  248. to see the glory of God

  249. is our greatest pursuit,

  250. our greatest problem,

  251. and our greatest privilege.

  252. To see the glory of God

  253. is our greatest pursuit,

  254. our greatest problem,

  255. and our greatest privilege.

  256. Now maybe you're here

  257. and you're not sure

  258. you can even believe in God.

  259. Or you're not sure

  260. how to relate to this Old Testament account

  261. about Moses.

  262. Or maybe you identify as a Christian,

  263. but you honestly don't feel

  264. much of a hunger

  265. or much of a thirst

  266. for more of this God.

  267. And so Moses' prayer

  268. caused me to see your glory.

  269. It kind of sounds abstract, irrelevant,

  270. and unrelatable.

  271. But I think that if we give

  272. some attention to Moses' requests here

  273. and consider what glory even is,

  274. I wonder if you might find

  275. Moses' prayer

  276. to see the glory of God

  277. more relatable than you might think.

  278. And not only relatable,

  279. but essential.

  280. Even our greatest possible pursuit.

  281. So let's start by considering

  282. this word glory,

  283. which admittedly is a hard word

  284. to define and to describe.

  285. Because as theologian Richard Gaffin,

  286. one of my professors at Westminster,

  287. he said,

  288. glory is preeminently

  289. a divine quality.

  290. Only God has glory.

  291. And so all other glories

  292. are only derivatives.

  293. So that makes it hard

  294. to describe and define.

  295. But still, I think we can arrive

  296. at an approximate definition.

  297. After all, God himself

  298. has revealed his glory to us

  299. that we might grasp,

  300. that we might grasp

  301. what he wants us to grasp

  302. about who he is, right?

  303. So let's go for it.

  304. All right, in the Hebrew,

  305. the word for glory

  306. is this word kavod.

  307. Kavod, which primarily

  308. has this sense of weightiness.

  309. Weightiness.

  310. Now first, this might sound weird.

  311. The glory of God

  312. as the weightiness of God.

  313. But maybe another helpful word

  314. is like gravitas.

  315. Or when we talk about

  316. weighty matters

  317. or weighty subjects.

  318. These are subjects

  319. of first importance, right?

  320. Of most ultimate priority.

  321. Things that matter the most.

  322. So when we talk about

  323. the glory of God,

  324. we're talking about

  325. the supreme weightiness of God.

  326. God as the ultimate anchor

  327. and foundation of all reality.

  328. The ultimate reference point.

  329. The sovereign creator

  330. apart from whom nothing exists.

  331. The glory of God

  332. is the gravitas of God.

  333. Now in the Greek,

  334. the word for glory

  335. is another word.

  336. It's doxa.

  337. Which carries this sense of honor

  338. and recognition

  339. and praiseworthiness.

  340. So to talk about glory

  341. is to talk about

  342. what is worthy of praise.

  343. What is worthy of my honor

  344. and my worship.

  345. The glory of God then points

  346. to the supreme worthiness of God.

  347. Worthy of all our worship

  348. and honor and praise.

  349. The only one before whom

  350. we ought to bow down in worship.

  351. And then when you put

  352. these two words together,

  353. kavod and doxa,

  354. what they have in common

  355. is that they both connotes

  356. a sense of splendor

  357. and majesty,

  358. abundance and wonder.

  359. And this is why

  360. when the glory of God

  361. is beheld

  362. throughout the scriptures,

  363. it makes people hide.

  364. It makes people turn away.

  365. It makes people fall to the ground

  366. and gaze with wonder,

  367. shock and awe.

  368. Now we could dive deeper

  369. into the many dimensions

  370. of the glory of God.

  371. But me and Jonathan's

  372. favorite theologian,

  373. Herman Baving,

  374. he defines the glory of God

  375. like this.

  376. The glory of the Lord

  377. is the splendor

  378. and brilliance

  379. that is inseparably associated

  380. with all of God's attributes

  381. and his self-revelation

  382. in nature and grace.

  383. The glorious form

  384. in which he everywhere

  385. appears to his creatures.

  386. So there can really be

  387. no end to this discussion

  388. of the glory of God.

  389. But I bring up

  390. these three aspects,

  391. the weightiness of God,

  392. the praiseworthiness of God,

  393. and the splendor of God

  394. to highlight precisely

  395. why the glory of God

  396. is our greatest possible pursuit.

  397. Because don't you see,

  398. we're all looking

  399. for something weighty.

  400. that one thing

  401. that matters most,

  402. the heaviest of anchors,

  403. right,

  404. that will hold us fast

  405. and keep our ships

  406. from drifting

  407. and sinking

  408. under the waves

  409. of this chaotic world.

  410. We're all looking

  411. for an ultimate

  412. weighty foundation

  413. that can hold us secure

  414. amidst the shifting sentiments

  415. of public opinion,

  416. the shifting values

  417. of each new generation

  418. and every transition

  419. of power

  420. from one empire

  421. to the next.

  422. And we're also looking

  423. for something worthy

  424. of our worship,

  425. someone to worship.

  426. As the late essayist

  427. and Pomona College professor

  428. David Foster Wallace

  429. once said,

  430. here's something else

  431. that's weird but true.

  432. In the day-to-day trenches

  433. of adult life,

  434. there's actually

  435. no such thing as atheism.

  436. There's no such thing

  437. as not worshiping.

  438. Everybody worships.

  439. The only choice we get

  440. is what to worship.

  441. Wallace was absolutely right.

  442. We're all looking

  443. for someone

  444. to bow down to as Lord.

  445. Something or someone

  446. of the most ultimate,

  447. far surpassing worth

  448. to devote our lives to.

  449. Someone worthy of ordering

  450. and organizing

  451. and orienting our lives,

  452. our beliefs,

  453. our values,

  454. our commitments

  455. and our every moment

  456. of existence.

  457. Someone to rescue us

  458. from our otherwise

  459. untethered,

  460. arbitrary,

  461. meaningless,

  462. and ironically

  463. self-conscious

  464. self-worship.

  465. And not only are we

  466. looking for that

  467. which is the weightiest

  468. or the most praiseworthy,

  469. but we're looking

  470. for something

  471. with such splendor.

  472. Something so transcendently

  473. beautiful

  474. that it cannot

  475. but take our breaths

  476. away in its presence.

  477. Something that is

  478. more than just true

  479. but something that is

  480. so compelling

  481. and captivating

  482. that it's astoundingly

  483. rapturous

  484. beyond words.

  485. This is what

  486. the glory of God

  487. is.

  488. This is what

  489. Moses is asking

  490. to see.

  491. the most ultimate

  492. thing he could

  493. conceive of.

  494. God,

  495. cause me to see

  496. you.

  497. In all your radiance,

  498. in all your glory,

  499. in all your fullness,

  500. let me experience

  501. all of who you are,

  502. your very essence.

  503. Reveal to me

  504. your identity

  505. and your character

  506. in an undeniable way.

  507. Moses wants to

  508. behold God's glory

  509. because he wants

  510. to know God

  511. even more.

  512. And Moses wants

  513. to know and behold God

  514. because to know God

  515. and to behold

  516. his glory

  517. is to know

  518. and behold

  519. the single most

  520. important thing,

  521. the single most

  522. profound,

  523. the single most

  524. foundational reality.

  525. What Moses is after

  526. is what I want to call

  527. that one thing.

  528. And we all have it.

  529. That one thing,

  530. that one vision,

  531. that one encounter,

  532. that one experience,

  533. the realest,

  534. the most fundamental,

  535. most transformative,

  536. life-altering

  537. and awe-inspiring

  538. sight one could

  539. possibly behold.

  540. The glory,

  541. the gravitas,

  542. the awesomeness

  543. and splendor

  544. of God.

  545. The one thing

  546. we're all after,

  547. a single orienting reality

  548. that will anchor

  549. and inspire

  550. all of us

  551. in this otherwise

  552. chaotic,

  553. uncertain,

  554. arbitrary,

  555. and meaningless world.

  556. The one thing

  557. to which all else

  558. is subjected.

  559. With a blank check

  560. from God,

  561. Moses asks

  562. for more of God

  563. because he's been

  564. up the mountaintop

  565. and he knows

  566. that there's no

  567. greater pursuit

  568. than to behold

  569. the glory of God.

  570. Now based on

  571. Moses' track record

  572. of prayer requests

  573. so far,

  574. we might assume

  575. that God's like,

  576. alright,

  577. one more,

  578. Moses?

  579. Sure,

  580. I could do one more.

  581. Sure,

  582. you can see my glory.

  583. But what we find here

  584. in verses 19 to 20

  585. is actually neither

  586. a full yes

  587. nor a full no.

  588. It's more of,

  589. I'll tell you

  590. what I'm going to do

  591. instead.

  592. See,

  593. because as much

  594. as God loves Moses,

  595. as much as God

  596. is pleased with Moses

  597. and has graciously

  598. granted so many

  599. of his prayers

  600. already,

  601. to see the glory

  602. of God

  603. is not a small

  604. and simple thing.

  605. To see the glory

  606. of God

  607. isn't just

  608. our greatest pursuit

  609. but it's also

  610. our greatest problem.

  611. Look at verse 19.

  612. Here's the partial yes.

  613. And the Lord said,

  614. I will cause

  615. all my goodness

  616. to pass in front of you

  617. and I will proclaim

  618. my name,

  619. the Lord,

  620. in your presence.

  621. I will have mercy

  622. on whom I will have mercy

  623. and I will have compassion

  624. on whom I will have compassion.

  625. But,

  626. verse 20,

  627. and here's the partial no,

  628. but he said,

  629. you cannot see my face

  630. for no one may see me

  631. and live.

  632. Now I imagine that

  633. for many of us,

  634. we struggle here

  635. with verse 20,

  636. this concept

  637. that people cannot

  638. see God's face

  639. and live.

  640. Maybe you're still

  641. caught up back

  642. a couple verses earlier

  643. with this notion

  644. of God's fiery anger

  645. burning against

  646. idol-worshiping Israelites

  647. and God wanting

  648. to even wipe them out

  649. as a whole entire nation

  650. for worshiping

  651. this golden calf.

  652. And I can understand

  653. how this irritates

  654. our modern

  655. Western sensibilities

  656. that have so elevated

  657. each one of us

  658. human beings.

  659. I can see

  660. how this might trigger

  661. even some of us

  662. who have this

  663. conception of God

  664. that he's primarily

  665. a wrathful God,

  666. an angry God,

  667. mostly to be feared.

  668. And you know,

  669. I would love to have

  670. an extended conversation

  671. with you,

  672. our elders would as well,

  673. but for the sake of time,

  674. I want to share with you

  675. some words from a book

  676. I highly recommend.

  677. It's by hip-hop artist

  678. Jackie Hill Perry.

  679. This book is titled

  680. Holier Than Thou,

  681. How God's Holiness

  682. Helps Us Trust Him.

  683. Because I think she

  684. hits it right on the head

  685. in her commitment

  686. to the holiness of God

  687. and in her explanation

  688. of this interface

  689. between this God

  690. who is holy,

  691. holy,

  692. holy,

  693. and his sin-stained

  694. creatures,

  695. including you and me.

  696. Listen to what she writes.

  697. She writes,

  698. The holy,

  699. holy,

  700. holy God

  701. should never be treated

  702. as so familiar

  703. to the degree

  704. that he becomes

  705. approachable

  706. on our own terms.

  707. I'm going to read that again.

  708. The holy,

  709. holy,

  710. holy God

  711. should never be treated

  712. as so familiar

  713. to the degree

  714. that he becomes

  715. approachable

  716. on our own terms.

  717. See,

  718. the glory,

  719. the gravitas of God

  720. demands that we acknowledge

  721. that he is God

  722. and that we are not.

  723. That he's the creator

  724. and we're his creatures.

  725. And therefore,

  726. we must not approach him

  727. on our own artificial terms,

  728. but on his authoritative terms.

  729. And according to God's terms,

  730. his holy presence

  731. cannot abide

  732. that which is not holy.

  733. Jackie Hill Perry,

  734. she writes,

  735. God's wrath

  736. is nothing like the anger

  737. we know of by experience.

  738. Wrath isn't a response

  739. to God's ego being bruised,

  740. nor is it that he's a sadist

  741. taking pleasure in our pain.

  742. It is quite the opposite.

  743. The wrath of God

  744. is the holy revulsion

  745. of God's being against

  746. that which is a contradiction

  747. to his holiness.

  748. God cannot be indifferent

  749. towards sin

  750. because he is too

  751. holy,

  752. holy,

  753. holy to do so.

  754. The reason we,

  755. she writes,

  756. the reason we eventually

  757. find the confidence

  758. to accuse God

  759. of injustice

  760. whenever his gavel

  761. falls too hard

  762. for our liking

  763. is because we have

  764. a ridiculously low view

  765. of sin

  766. and an equally mediocre

  767. grasp

  768. of the holiness of God.

  769. And that is why,

  770. she writes,

  771. we can ask to see his glory,

  772. but it's either death

  773. or a cleft

  774. available to us

  775. if God allows himself

  776. to be seen.

  777. And so when Moses

  778. asks to see

  779. the glory of God,

  780. he's not only asking

  781. for the deepest longing

  782. of his heart

  783. and for the very thing

  784. he was meant to gaze upon

  785. forever and ever

  786. into eternity,

  787. but he's also

  788. making a death wish.

  789. And that's the conundrum

  790. for all of us.

  791. How can we dwell

  792. with a holy God?

  793. How can we dwell

  794. with a holy God?

  795. But thankfully,

  796. this isn't the end

  797. of Moses' story,

  798. nor is it the end of ours.

  799. And that's where

  800. this cleft comes in.

  801. For to see the glory

  802. of God is not only

  803. our greatest pursuit

  804. and our greatest problem,

  805. but it's also

  806. our greatest privilege.

  807. Look with me

  808. at verse 21.

  809. Just as soon as God

  810. introduces this tension

  811. of,

  812. I will cause all of me

  813. to pass in front of you,

  814. but you cannot see my face

  815. or you will die,

  816. God also says

  817. in verse 21,

  818. there is a place

  819. near me

  820. where you may stand

  821. on a rock.

  822. When my glory

  823. passes by,

  824. I will put you

  825. in a cleft in the rock

  826. and cover you

  827. with my hand

  828. until I have passed by.

  829. Then I will remove

  830. my hand

  831. and you will see

  832. my back,

  833. but my face

  834. must not be seen.

  835. And do you know

  836. what this is?

  837. This is a foreshadowing

  838. of the gospel.

  839. The good news.

  840. The good news

  841. that when we couldn't

  842. come nearer,

  843. even behold,

  844. the glory of God,

  845. the glory of God

  846. shining from the face

  847. of Jesus Christ

  848. has come near

  849. and revealed himself

  850. to us.

  851. That when all we had

  852. was a tent

  853. far outside the camp,

  854. the eternal word,

  855. as the gospel of John

  856. puts it,

  857. the eternal word

  858. became flesh

  859. and dwelt among us,

  860. tabernacled among us,

  861. and we beheld his glory

  862. full of grace

  863. and truth.

  864. You see,

  865. because of Christ,

  866. when even mighty Moses

  867. with whom God

  868. was pleased to answer

  869. so many of his

  870. prayer requests,

  871. what mighty Moses

  872. could only see

  873. in part

  874. in Christ,

  875. God's own son,

  876. we can see

  877. in full

  878. through his son

  879. with whom

  880. he is well pleased.

  881. And what Moses

  882. needed to shield him

  883. from the unapproachable

  884. glory of God,

  885. his greatest need

  886. and yet his greatest threat,

  887. we have

  888. in Christ.

  889. a better rock,

  890. a permanent rock,

  891. a rock who will go

  892. with us,

  893. the ultimate cleft

  894. to Haydn,

  895. with no need to fear

  896. the awesome glory

  897. of God.

  898. And this is the good news,

  899. that at the cross,

  900. the conundrum

  901. of our greatest pursuit

  902. being our greatest problem

  903. because of sin,

  904. at the cross,

  905. it's resolved.

  906. In Christ,

  907. Jesus has put

  908. the problem,

  909. he's put our sin

  910. to death

  911. in his own body

  912. and if we will trust him,

  913. if we will hide ourselves

  914. in him

  915. as the ultimate cleft,

  916. we can be called

  917. the very righteousness

  918. of God,

  919. the very holiness

  920. of God,

  921. partakers in the glory

  922. that once threatened

  923. our existence

  924. as people who once

  925. so foolishly

  926. ascribed all weightiness

  927. and worthiness

  928. and wonder

  929. to created things

  930. rather than

  931. our creator.

  932. And this is the gospel.

  933. This is the gospel,

  934. this is the heartbeat

  935. of every revival

  936. when people have caught

  937. such a glimpse

  938. of the glory of God

  939. in Jesus Christ

  940. that they humbly

  941. yet boldly

  942. seek more of him

  943. and pray along with Moses,

  944. oh God,

  945. show me your glory.

  946. And that's what we celebrate

  947. today,

  948. this Reformation Sunday

  949. when we remember

  950. Solus Christus.

  951. There is only one mediator

  952. between God and man

  953. and it is his son,

  954. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  955. We don't need a priest,

  956. we don't need to

  957. fulfill any rituals,

  958. we don't need to pay anything

  959. out of our own pockets,

  960. but solely through Christ.

  961. We can come before

  962. the throne of God's grace

  963. with confidence.

  964. Now perhaps you're here today

  965. and you've been sitting

  966. through this revival series,

  967. right?

  968. And we're, what,

  969. nine sermons in now

  970. to this revival series

  971. and you're like,

  972. ah, shoot.

  973. I still don't feel anything.

  974. I haven't made it

  975. to the top of the mountain.

  976. I haven't had that experience.

  977. Come on, Jonathan.

  978. Light us up, man.

  979. Bring the fire.

  980. Lead us up the mountain.

  981. And I'm trying, man.

  982. But you know,

  983. this reminds me of a story

  984. that one of my favorite

  985. preachers,

  986. Francis Chan,

  987. loves to tell.

  988. He tells the story

  989. of this Indian pastor

  990. who is his mentor.

  991. And he's an incredibly

  992. fruitful pastor in India.

  993. He's planted like

  994. thousands of churches.

  995. But one day,

  996. Francis Chan receives this call

  997. from this pastor

  998. and the pastor

  999. is just weeping.

  1000. He's weeping

1001. because he's just found out

  1002. that yet another

  1003. high-profile pastor

  1004. in America

  1005. has fallen,

  1006. has fallen,

  1007. has had another

  1008. moral failure.

  1009. And he's weeping

  1010. because he knows

  1011. what kind of effect

1012. this is going to have

1013. on the church in America.

  1014. We who so love

  1015. our celebrity pastors,

1016. we who are so dependent

  1017. on these fiery guys

  1018. on YouTube and Instagram

  1019. just inspiring us

  1020. and carrying us

  1021. on their backs

  1022. up the mountain.

  1023. And what he says

  1024. to Francis Chan is,

  1025. Francis,

  1026. what's wrong

  1027. with you guys?

  1028. Don't you know

  1029. you can go up

  1030. the mountain yourselves?

  1031. Don't you know

1032. that you can go up

  1033. the mountain yourselves

  1034. and behold a glory

  1035. far beyond

  1036. what Moses ever

  1037. could have dreamed of

  1038. until he saw

  1039. the transfigured Christ?

  1040. Well, that's who

  1041. we have now.

  1042. we have the Christ.

  1043. He has come.

  1044. He has come.

  1045. He has given himself

  1046. to us

  1047. to behold

  1048. the good news

  1049. of God's word

  1050. to us today,

  1051. the good news

  1052. of Reformation Sunday

  1053. is that in Christ

  1054. and through Christ

  1055. we can go up

  1056. the mountain.

  1057. We can behold

  1058. his glory.

  1059. Will you come?

  1060. Will you come

  1061. and see?

  1062. Will you come

  1063. to Jesus?

  1064. Come to this table

  1065. and behold

  1066. his glory

  1067. and find it

  1068. full of grace

  1069. and truth.

1070. Will you pray with me?

  1071. and be damned

  1072. in theừng

  1073. and sab

  1074. and

  1075. who
