  5. Your ears and your heart will be with your people forever.

  6. Help us to see the privilege that that is and to fall on our knees in worship.

  7. Long more and more for more of you, God.

  8. So be honored in the preaching of your word and we pray these things in Jesus' strong name.

  9. Amen.

  10. Amen.

  11. So with Advent coming next week, we are closing out our fall series.

  12. We've been in a series on the theme of what?

  13. Revival.

  14. Right?

  15. So this is the final sermon on revival.

  16. So no pressure.

  17. Right?

  18. All right?

  19. It's make it or break it today.

  20. Got to bring the fire and let the revival begin.

  21. Amen.

  22. Thank you.

  23. But you know, seriously, every time I come up here to preach God's Holy Spirit-inspired word of truth,

  24. I do pray, I do hope for, I do expect a revival of some kind.

  25. And like, if not in this whole world, maybe in this country.

  26. If not in this country, maybe in this city.

  27. If not in this city, at least maybe in this church.

  28. Maybe if not in this whole church, then maybe at least in some of you.

  29. And if not in even any of you, at least in me.

  30. At least in me.

  31. I'm always hoping for, I'm always expecting revival.

  32. And I'm hoping that that's something we can take away from this series.

  33. That no matter the scale, revival is something that we never stop pursuing.

  34. Deeper intimacy with God.

  35. Fresh experiences of his presence and his power amongst us.

  36. The very dynamic, I imagine, of heaven itself.

  37. This trajectory of plumbing the bottomless depths of our infinite God for all eternity.

  38. Here at Christ Church, we will never move on.

  39. We will never graduate from pursuing revival.

  40. As Jonathan shared last week in our congregational meeting,

  41. we are convinced that revival is the last great hope of the Bay Area,

  42. even of the entire secular West.

  43. Revival.

  44. Not politics.

  45. Not civility and kindness and charity.

  46. Not reason and argumentation.

  47. Not money or prosperity.

  48. Not scientific or technological advancements.

  49. What the Bay Area needs, we believe, is a revival.

  50. The supernatural work of the Spirit of God.

  51. To heal and mend all that's been broken.

  52. So see, this series, this hasn't been some kind of individualistic,

  53. religious insider piety that we're promoting and pursuing just inside the walls of this church.

  54. No.

  55. We are seeking to lead people into deeper relationships with Christ for the city.

  56. For the world.

  57. And you know what I love about the Christian faith?

  58. I love the Christian interpretation of history.

  59. The Christian interpretation of history is that even if we cannot force revival like on command,

  60. the story that God is writing in history actually assumes and expects and guarantees revivals.

  61. So even if we cannot determine or set the when and the where of a revival,

  62. we can be confident that revival is always coming.

  63. It's always on the way.

  64. And that guarantee, that promise, is found right here in our text this morning.

  65. This text we've been repeating and alluding to throughout our series in chapter 7, verse 14.

  66. If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face

  67. and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and forgive their sins and heal their land.

  68. This guarantee that revival is always on the way for God's people when they pray.

  69. Now maybe this still doesn't excite you.

  70. This guarantee of a revival, maybe this entire series has been uninspiring to do.

  71. Maybe you're quite content to continue living a prayerless life without revival.

  72. But what if I framed it this way?

  73. What if prayer, this global and historic phenomenon that you can find across virtually every culture

  74. and every religious tradition,

  75. what if prayer wasn't some religious task or duty,

  76. but an indication of each and every human being's longing to be heard?

  77. Every person's longing for someone other than themselves to pay attention to their cries.

  78. Every person's longing for someone who can hear and who can help.

  79. You know, Chelsea and I, we love musicals,

  80. and one of my personal favorites is this one called Dear Evan Hansen.

  81. Anyone listen to or see Dear Evan Hansen?

  82. We love it.

  83. You've got to check it out.

  84. And what it's basically about is this friendless, socially awkward high schooler,

  85. his name is Evan Hansen,

  86. who has spent most of his life feeling like he's unseen and unheard and an outsider.

  87. And so the musical opens with him.

  88. He's getting out of bed and his arm is in a cast.

  89. Because that summer, because of self, out of self-harm,

  90. maybe even suicidal ideation,

  91. he's allowed himself to fall from a tree.

  92. And so he's got this broken arm, he's in a cast,

  93. and he's waking up in bed,

  94. and it's the first day of school,

  95. and he's just absolutely dreading it, right?

  96. And in the opening scene, he enters into the high school,

  97. and everyone's so excited to catch up except for him.

  98. And he's smack in the middle of this whole sea of students,

  99. yet at the same time, he feels all alone,

  100. and this is what he sings.

  101. On the outside, always looking in,

  102. will I ever be more than I've always been?

  103. Because I'm tap, tap, tapping on the glass.

  104. I'm waving through a window.

  105. I try to speak, but nobody can hear,

  106. so I wait around for an answer to appear.

  107. While I'm watch, watch, watching people pass,

  108. I'm waving through a window.

  109. Can anybody see?

  110. Is anybody waving back at me?

  111. He continues, when you're falling in a forest,

  112. and there's nobody around,

  113. do you ever really crash or even make a sound?

  114. Did I even make a sound?

  115. It's like I never made a sound.

  116. Will I ever make a sound?

  117. And you know, I wonder if any of us really needs

  118. to be an awkward teenager to identify with dear Evan Hansen.

  119. Like, you may not feel your need for revival,

  120. but everyone, everyone at one point or another feels unheard.

  121. Like nobody cares, like nobody sees.

  122. But that's what I love about our passage today.

  123. Like, what if I told you of a guarantee,

  124. a guarantee that you would always be heard,

  125. always be seen, and not just by anyone,

  126. but by an all-powerful, good, and loving person.

  127. Even if you are skeptical,

  128. in your skepticism about this person's possible existence,

  129. wouldn't you want this guarantee?

  130. Wouldn't you want a guarantee of this person to be true?

  131. And wouldn't you at least be interested

  132. in how to relate with and communicate with such a person?

  133. Well, that's what this passage illustrates for us,

  134. the privilege, the posture, and the promise of prayer.

  135. And those are our three points,

  136. the privilege, the posture, and the promise of prayer.

  137. Now, to set this up a bit,

  138. because we're jumping right into the middle

  139. of another episode of the Bible,

  140. what's recorded here in our text

  141. is one of the most pivotal, great moments

  142. in Israel's history.

  143. King Solomon's world-famous temple

  144. has finally been built as a permanent residence

  145. for God himself,

  146. this historic temple moment

  147. in their capital, Jerusalem.

  148. And so as it says down here in chapter six, verse 12,

  149. the scene for us is this picture

  150. of this kingly son of David, right, Solomon,

  151. and he's standing before the temple altar

  152. in front of the whole assembly,

  153. and he's lifting up his hands,

  154. and he offers up this prayer.

  155. And see, when we observe how Solomon prays

  156. and what he asks for,

  157. we find that even for this great king of Israel,

  158. this son of David,

  159. prayer is not something that he just presumes.

  160. He sees it as a privilege,

  161. and that's our first point,

  162. the privilege of prayer.

  163. Now read with me and notice how he recognizes

  164. the bigness, the transcendence,

  165. the sovereign authority of God

  166. in comparison to all other things.

  167. Verse 14, he said,

  168. Lord, the God of Israel,

  169. there is no God like you in heaven or on earth.

  170. Verse 18, will God really dwell on earth with humans?

  171. The heavens, even the highest heavens,

  172. cannot contain you,

  173. how much less this temple I have built.

  174. See, Solomon knows better than to presume

  175. that this temple is worthy of Yahweh,

  176. or even capable of housing him.

  177. He knows better than to assume

  178. that this temple could somehow harness the power

  179. and the presence of God.

  180. He knows how silly to think this would be.

  181. Even this greatest architectural feat

  182. in all of Hebrew history,

  183. he knows that in and of itself,

  184. even with all the time and the sweat

  185. and all the resources they put into this temple,

  186. that compared to Yahweh's glory,

  187. it was but a tiny and insignificant box.

  188. Solomon understood that apart from God's own

  189. actual commitment to be present

  190. and attentive to this temple,

  191. it'd just kind of be like,

  192. what is this, a temple for ants?

  193. Right?

  194. Zoolander reference, thank you.

  195. And so with eyes wide open,

  196. wide open to the greatness of this God,

  197. who he hopes will dwell in his dinky little temple,

  198. Solomon does not presume that this temple

  199. is already a place of prayer.

  200. Rather, he pleads for this temple

  201. to be a place of prayer.

  202. Look with me at verse 19.

  203. Look at what he asks for,

  204. and especially notice how many times

  205. he uses the word here.

  206. Verse 19.

  207. Lord my God, give attention

  208. to your servant's prayer and his plea for mercy.

  209. Hear the cry and the prayer

  210. that your servant is praying in your presence.

  211. May your eyes be open toward this temple,

  212. day and night, this place of which you said

  213. you would put your name there.

  214. May you hear the prayer your servant prays

  215. toward this place.

  216. Hear the supplications of your servant

  217. and of your people Israel

  218. when they pray toward this place.

  219. Hear from heaven your dwelling place.

  220. And when you hear, forgive.

  221. Verse 40.

  222. Now my God, may your eyes be open

  223. and your ears attentive

  224. to the prayers offered in this place.

  225. Did you catch that?

  226. Here in this most momentous occasion

  227. of King Solomon's reign,

  228. his highest prayer and petition

  229. is basically for the gift of prayer,

  230. the privilege of prayer itself.

  231. He's praying for prayer.

  232. He acknowledges that God is not obliged

  233. to hear and receive their prayers,

  234. so he pleads to God

  235. that God would hear them,

  236. hear their cries, hear their prayers,

  237. hear their supplications

  238. all the way from heaven,

  239. hear their pleas for mercy and forgiveness.

  240. Even for this son of David,

  241. the wisest king of Israel,

  242. prayer is not an entitlement,

  243. but it's an endowment in his eyes.

  244. It's not a presumption.

  245. Again, it's a privilege.

  246. And I wonder how many of us

  247. perceive and practice prayer

  248. for the great privilege that it is.

  249. Or do we take for granted,

  250. do we take communication

  251. with the creator and sustainer

  252. of the universe for granted?

  253. You know, we live in this modern,

  254. egalitarian internet age

  255. where for better and for worse,

  256. people can be heard like never before, right?

  257. Like think about it.

  258. Any one of us could conceivably

  259. go viral tomorrow, right?

  260. With just the right perfect video,

  261. we could get the attention

  262. of all the media outlets

  263. of the president of the United States.

  264. You can shoot off messages,

  265. get into people's DMs,

  266. capture thousands of people's attentions

  267. just like that, right?

  268. You can share on a GoFundMe page

  269. about your personal financial struggles,

  270. and Kim Kardashian just might see it

  271. and donate a few thousand bucks.

  272. Like this is the world that we live in.

  273. Or if I just tweet something

  274. that's clever enough,

  275. compelling enough,

  276. I might get retweeted by Steph Curry, right?

  277. We can get the ears

  278. and the attention of more people

  279. than has ever been possible in history.

  280. And thus it can be easy

  281. to take for granted

  282. our very right to be heard, right?

  283. And the obligation of others

  284. to listen to our cries for attention

  285. and our cries for help.

  286. And I'll be the first one

  287. to say that we should indeed

  288. lend our ears to our neighbors,

  289. to one another.

  290. That there is a real sense

  291. in which we owe our ears

  292. to one another

  293. as fellow human beings.

  294. And it is truly awesome

  295. to think that you can tweet

  296. at Taylor Swift

  297. and she just might see it.

  298. But while I mean no offense

  299. to the Swifties in this room,

  300. Taylor Swift's ears

  301. and God's ears

  302. are on two totally different levels,

  303. all right?

  304. Like just because Taylor Swift

  305. might give her attention

  306. to your tweets

  307. does not mean

  308. we now have the right

  309. to God's ear.

  310. Just because.

  311. The right to God's attention

  312. and to God's responses

  313. to our pleas.

  314. God is God

  315. and we are not.

  316. And he is not obligated

  317. to listen to

  318. or to heed our prayers

  319. and the request

  320. of sinful creatures

  321. just because we want him to.

  322. Do we realize

  323. that there are

  324. over seven and a half

  325. billion people

  326. on this planet?

  327. And before any of us

  328. there were billions

  329. upon billions of others,

  330. each one created

  331. by God

  332. in his image,

  333. each with their own needs

  334. and concerns

  335. and hurts

  336. and longings.

  337. And yet do we presume

  338. that God would give his ear

  339. to any single

  340. one of us?

  341. One speck of sand

  342. amidst the vastness

  343. of the seashore

  344. of humanity.

  345. humanity.

  346. And not to mention

  347. his holiness.

  348. Do we even know

  349. who we presume

  350. to be talking to

  351. in prayer?

  352. The Lord Yahweh,

  353. the high and exalted one

  354. seated on his throne.

  355. Pure and sinless angels

  356. cover their faces

  357. day and night

  358. in his presence

  359. unable to speak

  360. anything else

  361. than holy,

  362. holy,

  363. holy is the Lord

  364. God Almighty

  365. who was and is

  366. and is to come.

  367. Do we presume

  368. to pray to this kind

  369. of a God

  370. with our unclean lips,

  371. lips we've used

  372. to deny him

  373. and dishonor him

  374. and disparage those

  375. made in his image?

  376. You know,

  377. some of us

  378. might be stuck today

  379. and hung up on this mystery

  380. of why God doesn't seem

  381. to hear

  382. and answer our prayers.

  383. But what if the greater

  384. mystery was that

  385. he might even be

  386. willing to?

  387. In Solomon's

  388. unsurpassed wisdom,

  389. he was preoccupied

  390. with this greater mystery,

  391. marveling at the privilege

  392. and the possibility

  393. of prayer,

  394. the possibility

  395. of having a conversation

  396. with God,

  397. being heard by God

  398. with all the attention

  399. of a patient

  400. and empathetic parent

  401. toward their beloved child,

  402. the possibility

  403. of bringing a personal request

  404. to the one

  405. for whom nothing

  406. is impossible.

  407. Christchurch,

  408. we must pray.

  409. No,

  410. it's not that we

  411. must pray,

  412. we get to pray.

  413. We get to pray.

  414. We aren't doing God,

  415. we aren't doing the church

  416. a favor

  417. when we get on our knees,

  418. when we show up

  419. to the boiler room,

  420. to Wednesday,

  421. even song

  422. or to our prayer vigils.

  423. Prayer is the privilege

  424. of the people of God

  425. and when we grasp

  426. the absolute privilege

  427. of prayer

  428. to the holy God

  429. of the universe,

  430. it should make sense

  431. that there is also

  432. a proper posture

  433. of prayer as well

  434. in point number two,

  435. the posture of prayer.

  436. Like just because

  437. we are given

  438. the privilege

  439. of being heard by God,

  440. right,

  441. doesn't mean

  442. we should just come

  443. before him

  444. in any way

  445. that we want.

  446. And I know this might

  447. fly in the face

  448. of our kind of

  449. I'm just gonna do me,

  450. let me be myself

  451. culture,

  452. but honestly,

  453. unless you are

  454. a sociopath,

  455. everyone gets this

  456. at some level.

  457. This is true

  458. of any respectful

  459. relationship.

  460. Just because you are

  461. given the privilege

  462. of a relationship

  463. with someone

  464. does not mean

  465. you should treat them

  466. and approach them

  467. in whatever manner

  468. you choose.

  469. If you are given

  470. the privilege

  471. of entering into

  472. the Vatican

  473. to meet the Pope,

  474. entering the White House

  475. to meet the President,

  476. you don't just go in there

  477. however you want,

  478. like yo, yo, yo,

  479. what's up my guy,

  480. right, fist bump, yo,

  481. no.

  482. Or a better example,

  483. a better example

  484. might be this,

  485. if you've wronged someone,

  486. say you've cheated

  487. on your partner

  488. and they've granted

  489. you the privilege

  490. of entering back

  491. into a relationship

  492. with them,

  493. you don't approach them

  494. in any way

  495. that you want,

  496. in a lighthearted,

  497. flippant way

  498. as if they had not

  499. just shown you

  500. an incredible mercy.

  501. If someone

  502. who is way out

  503. of your league,

  504. if someone

  505. you owe

  506. a great debt to

  507. grants you

  508. the privilege

  509. of a relationship

  510. with them,

  511. this cannot but

  512. affect your posture

  513. toward them.

  514. How can you not

  515. be humble toward them,

  516. personal toward them,

  517. even penitent

  518. toward them?

  519. And that's what we get at

  520. in chapter 7,

  521. verse 14.

  522. God says,

  523. my people

  524. who are called

  525. by my name

  526. will humble themselves

  527. and pray

  528. and seek my face

  529. and turn from

  530. their wicked ways.

  531. See,

  532. a proper posture

  533. of prayer

  534. is one

  535. of humility.

  536. How could we

  537. not be humbled

  538. when we consider

  539. the great privilege

  540. of God

  541. lending his ear

  542. to our unclean lips?

  543. Prayer is inherently

  544. an act of humility,

  545. right?

  546. It's an act of dependence

  547. and it's an admission

  548. of our need

  549. and abandonment

  550. of our self-sufficiency

  551. and you know,

  552. I honestly think

  553. that this is the biggest reason

  554. why many of us

  555. don't pray.

  556. One of our elders

  557. this past week

  558. in our session meeting,

  559. he was saying that,

  560. it was Wes,

  561. Wes Selke,

  562. he was saying that,

  563. he thought that

  564. our biggest problem

  565. and I agree with him,

  566. our society's biggest problem

  567. is that we don't feel

  568. our need for God

  569. and this is not

  570. outside society,

  571. this is the church's

  572. problem as well,

  573. this is why we don't pray.

  574. It's not because

  575. we don't have enough time,

  576. it's not because

  577. we're not pious enough,

  578. it's not because

  579. we're not disciplined enough,

  580. it's because we're not

  581. humble enough,

  582. it's because we are not

  583. humble enough,

  584. it's that simple.

  585. Humble people pray,

  586. prideful people don't.

  587. People who believe

  588. they need God

  589. are in touch with God

  590. and people who don't

  591. believe they need God

  592. will not be in touch

  593. with him.

  594. Now a humble posture

  595. is also a personal posture,

  596. one that seeks God's face,

  597. that seeks God for God.

  598. Remember prayer is not

  599. a transactional exchange

  600. offered up to this

  601. cosmic gumball machine

  602. or this like

  603. your wish is my command

  604. kind of a genie.

  605. Proper prayer does not

  606. ultimately seek God's goods

  607. but God himself.

  608. prayer is not just

  609. worrying in the direction

  610. of God,

  611. it is seeking him,

  612. it's pursuing him,

  613. a relationship

  614. with the living God

  615. and this is the kind

  616. of prayer that God

  617. loves to respond to.

  618. Listen to his words

  619. through the prophet Jeremiah

  620. to an exiled people,

  621. you will seek me

  622. and find me

  623. when you seek me

  624. with all your heart,

  625. I will be found by you

  626. declares the Lord.

  627. Isn't that such

  628. an amazing promise?

  629. Isn't that an amazing promise?

  630. God is after our hearts

  631. and what this also means then

  632. is that our humble

  633. and personal prayers,

  634. they also need to be

  635. penitent prayers.

  636. Turning away

  637. from our wicked ways,

  638. God is light

  639. and in him

  640. is no darkness at all.

  641. If we say we have

  642. fellowship with him

  643. while we walk in darkness,

  644. we lie

  645. and do not practice

  646. the truth.

  647. Like real talk here,

  648. if you don't want

  649. to be forgiven,

  650. God is not going

  651. to forgive you.

  652. If you do not want

  653. to be healed,

  654. God will not heal you.

  655. And I know this all

  656. seems kind of like

  657. no duh,

  658. but are our prayers

  659. really marked

  660. by this kind of humble

  661. and personal

  662. and penitent posture?

  663. Do we assume

  664. a Godward posture

  665. or a selfward posture

  666. when we approach

  667. God in prayer?

  668. Do we pray,

  669. thy will be done

  670. or my will be done?

  671. Are we truly

  672. humbly dependent upon him?

  673. Do we really want God

  674. for God alone?

  675. And are there any

  676. wicked ways

  677. we might be holding on to

  678. that are obstructing

  679. our communion with him?

  680. God has laid out

  681. for us the kind of posture

  682. that pleases him,

  683. that captures his attention.

  684. He says in Isaiah

    Isaiah 66 chapter mention

  685. chapter 66,

  686. this is the one

  687. to whom I will look.

  688. He who is humble

  689. and contrite in spirit

  690. and trembles at my word.

  691. That's how we get

  692. the eyes of God.

  693. It's not some

  694. manipulative technique,

  695. to force his hand,

  696. but it's a blueprint

  697. for walking in his light

  698. and life and love.

  699. It's a posture

  700. to set ourselves up

  701. for revival.

  702. You know,

  703. my pastor in college,

  704. Peter Kim,

  705. he talked about this

  706. really helpfully.

  707. He said,

  708. you know,

  709. we cannot force

  710. the hand of God,

  711. we cannot manufacture

  712. revival,

  713. but though we cannot

  714. control the wind

  715. or the sea,

  716. what we can do

  717. is we can put up

  718. our sails, right?

  719. We can correct

  720. our rudders

  721. as we wait

  722. for the fresh wind

  723. of God's spirit

  724. to move us

  725. as he so desires.

  726. When our prayers

  727. are postured

  728. in humility

  729. and in seeking

  730. God's face

  731. and in turning

  732. from our wicked ways,

  733. God promises,

  734. he promises

  735. to hear,

  736. he promises

  737. to forgive,

  738. he promises

  739. to heal

  740. and that's amazing

  741. and that's an amazing

  742. promise

  743. and this is where

  744. we'll end

  745. the promise

  746. of prayer.

  747. You know,

  748. this book,

  749. 2 Chronicles,

  750. though it records

  751. Solomon's prayer

  752. and God's response,

  753. you know,

  754. with the fire

  755. coming down,

  756. it was actually

  757. written hundreds

  758. of years later

  759. and in the traditional

  760. Jewish ordering

  761. of the Old Testament,

  762. this would be

  763. the very last book

  764. that you would read.

  765. So in Jesus' Bible,

  766. this would be

  767. the very last book

  768. that he read.

  769. So the actual

  770. original readers

  771. of 2 Chronicles

  772. are not those

  773. Israelites who are there

  774. at the moment

  775. with Solomon,

  776. but they are the

  777. generation of Israelites

  778. who had returned

  779. from exile.

  780. They're the ones

  781. who had returned

  782. from Babylonian

  783. captivity.

  784. So I want us

  785. to imagine

  786. reading 2 Chronicles

  787. like this generation

  788. of post-exilic

  789. Israelites,

  790. right?

  791. Imagine being

  792. a post-exilic

  793. Jewish person

  794. reading this account

  795. in 2 Chronicles

    2 Chronicles 6 chapter mention

  796. chapter 6 and 7.

  797. You're back

  798. in your homeland

  799. but you don't have

  800. a king, right?

  801. And technically

  802. you are still

  803. under the jurisdiction

  804. of the Persian Empire.

  805. Now imagine

  806. reading this event,

  807. Solomon's prayer,

  808. God's response,

  809. the fire coming down

  810. and God promising,

  811. promising that he

  812. would definitely

  813. hear his people's

  814. prayers at

  815. Solomon's temple.

  816. But then you look

  817. outside your window,

  818. right?

  819. Do you see

  820. Solomon's temple?

  821. No, you see

  822. the second temple

  823. that you yourself

  824. built post-exile

  825. and you are told

  826. that this second temple

  827. pales in comparison

  828. to the original temple

  829. that Solomon had built

  830. where the fire came down

  831. and God met

  832. his people.

  833. So like what

  834. do you do

  835. with these

  836. century-old promises

  837. that were given

  838. to Solomon

  839. and those people

  840. back in verses

  841. 14 and following?

  842. When God said

  843. hundreds of years earlier,

  844. if my people

  845. who are called

  846. by my name

  847. will humble

  848. themselves and pray

  849. and seek my face

  850. and turn from

  851. their wicked ways,

  852. then I will hear

  853. from heaven

  854. and I will forgive

  855. their sin

  856. and will heal

  857. their land.

  858. Now my eyes

  859. will be open

  860. and my ears attentive

  861. to the prayers

  862. offered in this place.

  863. I have chosen

  864. and consecrated

  865. this temple,

  866. God said,

  867. so that my name

  868. may be there forever.

  869. My eyes and my heart

  870. will always be there.

  871. What do we do

  872. with that kind of a promise

  873. that's so tied

  874. to Solomon's temple,

  875. right?

  876. If we put ourselves

  877. in the shoes

  878. of the original readers

  879. of 2 Chronicles,

  880. it would be really confusing,

  881. I think,

  882. to read these words

  883. and figure out

  884. how they exactly

  885. applied to us.

  886. God,

  887. you said you'd be attentive

  888. to the prayers

  889. offered in Solomon's temple,

  890. but what about our temple?

  891. You said your name

  892. and your eyes

  893. and your heart

  894. would be there forever,

  895. but we messed up

  896. and we were actually exiled.

  897. We turned from you

  898. and the temple,

  899. the original temple

  900. where you made these promises,

  901. it's gone.

  902. So where is your name now?

  903. Where are your eyes?

  904. Where is your heart now?

  905. Are you still with us?

  906. Do you still see us?

  907. Is your heart still for us

  908. or has our sin

  909. disqualified us

  910. once and for all

  911. and is our land

  912. beyond the possibility

  913. of healing?

  914. While Solomon

  915. and the assembly before him

  916. saw the fire come down

  917. and while they received

  918. the promise of God

  919. to meet them

  920. in their temple,

  921. these original readers

  922. of 2 Chronicles,

  923. these 2 Temple Israelites

  924. were left in the same shoes

  925. many of us

  926. find ourselves in today,

  927. posing the same question

  928. as Dear Evan Hansen.

  929. Might it be

  930. that we will go on unseen,

  931. unheard,

  932. unloved

  933. for the rest of our lives?

  934. For while the first Temple Israelites

  935. had their own son of David,

  936. their own wise king

  937. pleading on their behalf

  938. for the presence of God,

  939. their own consecrated Temple

  940. upon which the very fire

  941. and glory of God's presence

  942. visibly descended,

  943. what did the second Temple Israelites

  944. have?

  945. And what do we have

  946. to assure us

  947. that God sees us,

  948. that God hears us,

  949. that God loves us,

  950. that we have his eyes,

  951. his ears,

  952. and his heart,

  953. that the forgiveness

  954. of our sins

  955. and the healing of our land

  956. are possible?

  957. What assurance do we have?

  958. I mean,

  959. if only we too

  960. had a son of David,

  961. right?

  962. An all-wise king

  963. to plead with God

  964. on our behalf.

  965. If only we had

  966. maybe even a son of God

  967. whose requests

  968. would never be refused

  969. by his Father.

  970. If only we had a temple,

  971. a glorious point

  972. of access to God,

  973. a place for a real experience

  974. of the presence of God

  975. here with us on earth.

  976. If only we had

  977. such an incorruptible Temple

  978. that even if it was

  979. violently torn down,

  980. it could rise again

  981. in three days.

  982. If only, right?

  983. Or is that not

  984. what we have

  985. in the person

  986. of Jesus Christ?

  987. The better and ultimate

  988. son of David,

  989. a king who,

  990. while crowned with thorns,

  991. begs his father

  992. to forgive them

  993. for they know not

  994. what they do.

  995. And by his wounds,

  996. we are healed.

  997. Jesus is the ultimate temple

  998. who grafts us in

  999. and even makes us

  1000. a temple with him

1001. of the very Spirit of God

  1002. dwelling within us,

1003. a spirit interceding for us

  1004. with groans

  1005. too deep for words.

  1006. You know,

  1007. in the musical

  1008. Dear Evan Hansen,

  1009. the kind of big

  1010. feel-good song

  1011. of the show

  1012. is this song

  1013. where he preaches

  1014. the good news

  1015. to all the misfits

1016. that you will be found.

  1017. You'll be heard,

  1018. you'll be seen,

  1019. you will be found.

  1020. There's a place

  1021. where we don't have

  1022. to be alone.

1023. But it's never really clear

1024. how he can guarantee that.

  1025. It's never really clear

1026. how this is anything more

  1027. than a wishful encouragement

1028. that outsiders will be seen

  1029. and heard

  1030. and loved.

  1031. But you know

1032. the beauty of the gospel

  1033. is that in Christ

  1034. we have the guarantee.

  1035. We have the Spirit

  1036. crying within us,

1037. not just you will be found

  1038. but Abba,

  1039. Father,

1040. you have already been found.

  1041. Our Father in heaven

1042. has seen his prodigal children

1043. when they were so far off

  1044. that they could not

  1045. even see him

1046. and he has run to us

1047. in the person of Christ.

1048. And just as God promised

  1049. to David's son,

  1050. King Solomon,

1051. that he and his people

  1052. would have his eyes,

  1053. his ears,

  1054. and his very heart.

  1055. Guess what?

1056. All the promises of God

  1057. are yes and amen

  1058. in Jesus Christ.

  1059. And so much more

  1060. has he promised

  1061. to David's son,

  1062. King Jesus,

1063. that he and his people

  1064. will always and forever

  1065. have eyes,

  1066. have his ears,

  1067. and his very heart.

  1068. And this,

  1069. this is the gospel.

  1070. The promise

  1071. of prayer.

  1072. The privilege

  1073. of prayer

  1074. secured for us,

  1075. guaranteed

  1076. in Christ.

  1077. Christ.

  1078. So Christ,

  1079. let us be

  1080. a people of prayer.

  1081. Let us be

  1082. a church of prayer.

  1083. Christ,

  1084. let us be

  1085. a people

  1086. of humble,

  1087. personal,

  1088. penitent prayer.

  1089. And not just because

  1090. we got to,

  1091. but because we

  1092. get to

  1093. in Christ.

  1094. Let's pray.

  1095. Lord,

  1096. these are your words.

  1097. Let's pray.

  1098. If we will

  1099. humble ourselves

  1100. and pray

  1101. and seek your face

  1102. and turn from

  1103. our wicked ways,

  1104. then you will

  1105. hear from heaven.

  1106. You said it.

  1107. I will

  1108. hear from heaven.

  1109. You didn't say,

1110. I might hear from heaven.

  1111. You didn't say,

  1112. I'll think about

  1113. hearing from heaven.

  1114. You said,

  1115. I will

  1116. hear from heaven

  1117. and forgive

  1118. their sins

  1119. and heal

  1120. their land.

  1121. Impress upon us,

  1122. Lord,

  1123. the privilege

  1124. of prayer.

  1125. Help us to assume

  1126. the posture

  1127. of prayer

  1128. and help us

  1129. to glory

  1130. in the promise

  1131. of prayer

  1132. made possible

  1133. by Jesus Christ,

  1134. the great

  1135. son of David,

  1136. the temple

  1137. we never deserved,

  1138. who has come

  1139. near to us

  1140. and brought us

  1141. to you

  1142. at great,

  1143. great cost

  1144. to himself.

  1145. We love you,

  1146. God,

  1147. and we want

  1148. to love you more.

  1149. So would you do

  1150. that in us,

  1151. we pray.

  1152. In the name

  1153. of Jesus,

  1154. amen.

  1155. Amen.

  1156. Amen.

  1157. Amen.

  1158. Amen.

  1159. Amen.

  1160. Amen.

  1161. Amen.

  1162. Amen.

  1163. Amen.

  1164. Amen.

  1165. Amen.

  1166. Amen.

  1167. Amen.

  1168. Amen.

  1169. Amen.

  1170. Amen.

  1171. Amen.

  1172. Amen.

  1173. Amen.

  1174. Amen.

  1175. Amen.

  1176. Amen.
