  5. The Lord's word for us this morning comes from the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 20, 17 through 28.

    Matthew 20 chapter mention

  6. Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem.

  7. On the way, he took the twelve aside and said to them,

  8. We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.

  9. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.

  10. On the third day, he will be raised to life.

  11. Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons and, kneeling down, asked a favor of him.

  12. What is it you want? he asked.

  13. She said, Grant that one of these two sons of mine may sit at your right and the other at your left in your kingdom.

  14. You don't know what you are asking, Jesus said to them.

  15. Can you drink the cup I am going to drink?

  16. We can, they answered.

  17. Jesus said to them,

  18. You will indeed drink from my cup, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant.

  19. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared by my Father.

  20. When the ten heard about this, they were indignant with the two brothers.

  21. Jesus called them together and said,

  22. You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.

  23. Not so with you.

  24. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave.

  25. Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

  26. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  27. Praise to you, O Christ.

  28. Thank you, Brian.

  29. Good morning.

  30. My name is Andrew.

  31. I'm one of the pastors here at Christ Church.

  32. And it's great to be with you.

  33. I'm sharing God's word with you this morning.

  34. Will you pray with me?

  35. Lord God, we have not come to witness a powerful preacher, but to encounter your powerful word spoken to us from the lips of Jesus.

  36. And I just ask that we would so experience the Spirit, so encounter your Son,

  37. that we'd be changed by the ordinary preaching of your word.

  38. So make much of our little.

  39. Do immeasurably more than we could ask or imagine.

  40. We pray this in Jesus' name.

  41. Amen.

  42. All right, so I'm not sure if Cody and Stevie Texan are tuning in, but I did want to give them a shout out.

  43. They just had their newborns this week safely.

  44. We're super happy about that.

  45. Yeah, I'm super excited for them.

  46. First-time parents, beautiful little boys, twins, Samuel and Luke Texan.

  47. We'll call them the Texan twins, all right?

  48. The Texan twins.

  49. And, you know, this really got me reminiscing about my first time as a parent.

  50. That was four years ago.

  51. Kami is four now.

  52. And I just remember four years ago holding that little baby girl in my arms, fresh out of the womb.

  53. And I was like, man, I want this girl to be great.

  54. I want her to be great.

  55. And so I did all the things, right?

  56. Skin on skin time with mommy and daddy.

  57. I read to her.

  58. I sang to her.

  59. I smothered her with affection.

  60. I even tried to enhance her physical capabilities.

  61. Just one day old, I was like having her bounce up on my lap trying to make her do baby squats.

  62. I would touch her fingers to increase her tactile senses and let her touch a bunch of different things to increase her dexterity.

  63. I put a basketball next to her to familiarize her with the game.

  64. I just, I really wanted her to be great.

  65. An absolutely great human being according to all the metrics of greatness, at least in my mind.

  66. And imagine that's what Cody and Stevie want for their boys.

  67. It's what all of the parents in this room probably want for their kids, what all of our parents probably wanted for us.

  68. We all want to be great.

  69. And we all want those we love to be great.

  70. And it was no different in the days of Jesus than it is today when a mother, not unlike any other parent in this room,

  71. approached her Messiah King, seeking the greatness of her beloved boys, two of Jesus' innermost disciples, James and John, the sons of Zebedee.

  72. And yet what we see here is that in typical Jesus fashion, he neither denies nor grants this short-sighted request,

  73. but instead he points them beyond themselves, beyond their present understandings of who he is and what true greatness is.

  74. And he points them to a far more profound understanding of himself and of true greatness.

  75. He points them to the fact that when we miss the crux of the cross, we miss the greatness of greatness.

  76. And that's God's word to us today.

  77. When we miss the crux of the cross, we miss the greatness of greatness.

  78. Now let's set the scene here first.

  79. Look with me at verse 17.

  80. Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem.

  81. So this is his final journey, his journey to the cross.

  82. And you just can imagine the things that he's feeling on his way there, right?

  83. And so it's not surprising that he wants to talk about what's heaviest upon his heart with his crew.

  84. So it says,

  85. Like remember, he's got quite an entourage, but it says he takes his closest friends aside,

  86. wanting to share with them what's on his heart, what's on his mind.

  87. And even though he's shared this at least twice with them already in Matthew's gospel account,

  88. and even though they typically seem to not really understand what he's talking about

  89. or just kind of seem to brush it off normally,

  90. he tries to be vulnerable with them again.

  91. And he wants them to know.

  92. He wants to prepare them for what's going to happen.

  93. So he says to them in verse 18,

  94. And what he does is he gives them even more information than he'd previously given them.

  95. In verse 19, he says that he's going to be delivered to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified.

  96. And he says on the third day he will be raised to life.

  97. So imagine you're his close friends,

  98. and he pulls you aside and he spills his guts to you like this.

  99. And he's not only your close friend,

  100. he's the one you believe to be the Messiah,

  101. the one who you believe is sent from God, right?

  102. The authoritative voice of God, the prophetic voice right there with you.

  103. How might you respond to all these things that Jesus just said

  104. about his crucifixion and his resurrection?

  105. You would think that his closest friends would be distressed, right?

  106. Or if they didn't understand, they'd be like,

  107. you know, tell me more, please.

  108. I mean, Jesus was saying some pretty wild things, right?

  109. Condemned by the chief priests in the temple,

  110. flogged and mocked by both the Jewish establishment and Gentile Romans,

  111. crucified, and then like raised from the dead?

  112. What are you talking about?

  113. Raised from the dead.

  114. But what verse?

  115. But what does verse 20 say?

  116. What does verse 20 say?

  117. Right after Jesus speaks about his crucifixion and his resurrection,

  118. there is no consolation.

  119. There are no questions.

  120. It's like he hasn't said anything at all.

  121. Verse 20,

  122. Then the mother of Zebedee's sons came to Jesus with her sons

  123. and kneeling down asked something from him.

  124. And you know the NIV says asked a favor of him,

  125. but I think that's actually too generous in my opinion.

  126. In the Greek, it actually says she asked something from him.

  127. Like she's out to just get something from him.

  128. And so he asked her in verse 21,

  129. what do you want?

  130. What do you desire?

  131. And she commands him.

  132. She gives an imperative.

  133. In the Greek, it's not actually grant, but it says say.

  134. She says,

  135. Say, Jesus,

  136. Say that these two sons of mine may sit at your right and left.

  137. Effectively, make them your prime minister and your chief of staff in your kingdom.

  138. And if that seems like an incredibly awkward transition from verse 19 to 20,

  139. it is.

  140. It is an awkward transition.

  141. But you know, I think that this gospel writer knew exactly what he was doing

  142. by recording this major non sequitur.

  143. And I spent a lot of time this week trying to figure out,

  144. puzzling as to why this chapter was written the way that it is.

  145. Like what was the logical flow between verse 19 and verse 20?

  146. Like why would anyone think it was cool or okay or natural

  147. to so abruptly change the topic of conversation

  148. and the flow of thought to demand something of Jesus

  149. after he'd just gotten vulnerable with them,

  150. sharing what was on his heart with his dearest friends

  151. about some really deep stuff like being mocked and flogged and crucified.

  152. But then it hit me.

  153. This transition from verse 19 to verse 20

  154. was probably supposed to strike me as odd and discordant.

  155. And not only was this inappropriate and awkward of James and John and their mom,

  156. but I think God was trying to show me this week

  157. that this wasn't just a reflection of the Zebedee family,

  158. but it was also a mirror reflecting me.

  159. And how I too so often approach the Lord, my King, my Messiah,

  160. not as the King of Kings crucified in my place,

  161. but more as a genie than a sacrificial master.

  162. It's a reflection of how I so often ignore the main thing that Jesus is about,

  163. the main thing that's on his heart,

  164. and instead bring to him the things on my own self-centered agenda list.

  165. And we all do this.

  166. We do this all the time, don't we?

  167. Like if someone asks us,

  168. how can I pray for you?

  169. What do we say?

  170. We ask people to pray that God would help us

  171. achieve our own self-determined goals

  172. toward our own greatness, right?

  173. That God would help me do well in my test.

  174. That he would help me do well in my performance.

  175. That he would grant me favorable outcomes at work, right?

  176. Better circumstances to make me great.

  177. To make me great at whatever it is I'm pursuing.

  178. We all do this.

  179. I'm preaching right now,

  180. and I probably asked someone this week,

  181. can you just pray that God would give me a good sermon to preach?

  182. Make me a good preacher?

  183. Give me good pastoral counsel?

  184. But you know,

  185. if we only ever approach Jesus

  186. as an all-powerful king,

  187. and not as a crucified king,

  188. we will only ever approach him wrongly.

  189. We will only ever pray the wrong kinds of prayers,

  190. and missing the crux of the cross,

  191. we will miss the greatness of true greatness,

  192. his greatness.

  193. Now look,

  194. I'm not saying that these kinds of prayers

  195. should never come upon our lips,

  196. or that God doesn't care about our lives,

  197. or the things that we ask for.

  198. In fact, he does.

  199. He cares more than we do about our lives,

  200. and he wants us to bring every little thing

  201. on our minds,

  202. on our hearts,

  203. to him.

  204. I would even say that God wants us to be great.

  205. Notice,

  206. Jesus doesn't rebuke or reproach the Zebedee family here.

  207. He doesn't scold them for being arrogant,

  208. or prideful,

  209. or selfish,

  210. or worldly.

  211. Like,

  212. who do you think you are?

  213. How dare you pursue greatness?

  214. No,

  215. Jesus doesn't have anything against greatness,

  216. or ambition,

  217. in and of itself.

  218. In fact,

  219. in the scriptures,

  220. the scriptures teach that we are wired,

  221. to pursue greatness.

  222. It's part of what it means to be human,

  223. to be made in the great,

  224. and glorious image of God,

  225. to fulfill God's first words to humanity,

  226. to be fruitful,

  227. and to multiply those fruit,

  228. and to expand over the earth,

  229. and to rule the earth,

  230. and to exercise dominion,

  231. as children of our kingly creator.

  232. We should all want to be great,

  233. because God made us to be great.

  234. In our classrooms,

  235. in our workplaces,

  236. in our families,

  237. our relationships,

  238. in our hobbies,

  239. as students,

  240. employees,

  241. employers,

  242. as parents,

  243. siblings,

  244. spouses,

  245. athletes,

  246. artists,

  247. scientists,

  248. professionals,

  249. to use and develop the gifts

  250. he's given to each of us

  251. to be a blessing to the world.

  252. Because our greatness reflects

  253. God's greatness.

  254. It's like what Eric Liddell said,

  255. the Olympians,

  256. in that movie,

  257. The Chariots of Fire,

  258. said this to his sister,

  259. I believe that God made me for a purpose.

  260. He made me fast.

  261. And when I run,

  262. I feel his pleasure.

  263. To give it up would be to hold him in contempt.

  264. It's not just fun.

  265. To win is to honor him.

  266. So the Zebedee family's desire for greatness

  267. wasn't wrong.

  268. But what was wrong

  269. was their understanding of greatness.

  270. That's what went wrong.

  271. See, what went wrong

  272. with their understanding of greatness

  273. is that they only understood

  274. half the gospel.

  275. They only understood half the gospel.

  276. Yes, James and John

  277. and their mother

  278. rightly believed

  279. Jesus is king.

  280. Jesus is Messiah.

  281. It even says she

  282. knelt before him.

  283. They clearly understood

  284. something of Jesus' greatness.

  285. And they sought their own greatness

  286. by proximity to his.

  287. That's right.

  288. That's good.

  289. But what they failed to understand

  290. was the other half of the gospel.

  291. That Jesus would be

  292. a crucified king.

  293. And that his true greatness

  294. didn't just come from some

  295. generic crown upon his head

  296. but specifically

  297. from his crown of thorns.

  298. See, by ignoring Jesus'

  299. vulnerable discussion

  300. about the suffering

  301. he was about to face,

  302. by missing the crux of the cross,

  303. they were missing

  304. the greatness

  305. of his greatness.

  306. And so what Jesus does

  307. is he gently and patiently

  308. tries to redirect them

  309. to his cross

  310. and to the truth

  311. about what real greatness

  312. is about.

  313. So I want to have us

  314. turn our attention now

  315. to Jesus' teaching

  316. on true greatness.

  317. Look with me at verse 22.

  318. In verse 22,

  319. it's clear to Jesus

  320. that they have no idea

  321. what true greatness is.

  322. You don't know

  323. what you are asking,

  324. he says.

  325. And so the first thing he does

  326. is he tries to help

  327. them connect the dots

  328. between his cross

  329. and his greatness.

  330. And so he asks them,

  331. can you drink the cup

  332. I am going to drink?

  333. I'm going to explain more

  334. about that cup in a minute,

  335. but what you at least

  336. need to know

  337. is that it's not

  338. a desirable thing

  339. to drink this cup.

  340. It's the same cup

  341. that Jesus desperately

  342. pleads with his Father

  343. about in the garden.

  344. Father,

  345. if it is possible,

  346. may this cup

  347. be taken away from me.

  348. Yet not what I will,

  349. but yours be done.

  350. And it's a cup of suffering

  351. and sorrow

  352. and anguish

  353. and loneliness

  354. and forsakenness.

  355. And so by asking

  356. this question,

  357. Jesus is indicating

  358. that the way to greatness

  359. involves drinking

  360. a bitter cup,

  361. a bitter cup of suffering

  362. and hardship.

  363. He's saying that the road

  364. to greatness

  365. isn't a walk in the park.

  366. It's costly.

  367. It's hard to swallow.

  368. It's not just a matter

  369. of asking your mom

  370. to get you a nice seat

  371. next to the king.

  372. No.

  373. It's like Dr. King said,

  374. nothing worthwhile

  375. is gained without sacrifice.

  376. It's costly.

  377. Jesus says to the sons

  378. of Zebedee,

  379. do you really know

  380. what it takes,

  381. what it costs?

  382. Are you really able

  383. to drink this cup

  384. all the way down

  385. to the last,

  386. most bitter dregs?

  387. And it's not quite clear

  388. that they do understand

  389. what Jesus is communicating

  390. to them

  391. about the bitter cost

  392. of greatness

  393. in his kingdom.

  394. Because James and John

  395. are like,

  396. yeah,

  397. we can drink it.

  398. We got this.

  399. Yeah, Jesus,

  400. we'll be your cup bearers,

  401. whatever it takes

  402. to share your greatness.

  403. We can pay it.

  404. We can pay the cost.

  405. But really,

  406. they have no idea.

  407. So Jesus continues

  408. in verse 23.

  409. He says,

  410. well,

  411. you say you can

  412. and I can even tell you now

  413. that you will indeed

  414. drink from my cup,

  415. but regardless,

  416. to sit at my right

  417. or left,

  418. it's not for me to grant.

  419. These places belong

  420. to those for whom

  421. they have been prepared

  422. by my Father,

  423. Jesus says.

  424. And this is the next thing

  425. that we learn about greatness.

  426. It not only involves

  427. a bitter cup,

  428. but ultimately,

  429. greatness is judged

  430. and decided

  431. by the Father.

  432. Jesus,

  433. their great Messiah

  434. and King

  435. is setting for them

  436. an example of greatness.

  437. And it's not about

  438. seizing authority,

  439. but rather submitting

  440. to authority.

  441. The authority

  442. of our Father

  443. in heaven.

  444. Jesus is saying,

  445. look guys,

  446. honestly,

  447. I myself,

  448. the Messiah,

  449. I don't even have

  450. the authority

  451. to grant who will be

  452. at my right

  453. or my left

  454. because even I am

  455. under the authority

  456. of my Father.

  457. And He decides,

  458. not me.

  459. You guys want to be

  460. at my left

  461. and right in the kingdom,

  462. but don't forget

  463. whose kingdom this is.

  464. How did I teach you

  465. to pray?

  466. Our Father in heaven,

  467. hallowed be your name.

  468. Your kingdom come.

  469. Your will be done.

  470. And Jesus consistently

  471. points them back

  472. to not my will be done,

  473. but my Father's.

  474. You know,

  475. in Mark's gospel account

  476. of this story,

  477. the two sons are recorded

  478. saying to Jesus,

  479. they say,

  480. teacher,

  481. we want you to do

  482. for us

  483. whatever we ask.

  484. And I think this is,

  485. this really betrays,

  486. I think,

  487. their understanding

  488. of greatness

  489. in the kingdom of God.

  490. They think that greatness

  491. is about getting

  492. whatever you want,

  493. having that much authority.

  494. And that's what so many of us

  495. think when we think

  496. of greatness as well,

  497. don't we?

  498. We think of power.

  499. We think of authority.

  500. We think of self-determination.

  501. When I put my basketball,

  502. right,

  503. into my newborn Cammie's hands,

  504. what was I thinking?

  505. I want her to dominate,

  506. all right?

  507. I want her to dominate

  508. on the court.

  509. I want her to have her way

  510. with her opponents.

  511. When I read to her,

  512. what was I thinking?

  513. I want her to be great

  514. at school.

  515. I want her to be able

  516. to get into whatever school

  517. she wants,

  518. right?

  519. But what if greatness

  520. isn't about ascending

  521. to some status

  522. where we can always

  523. have our way,

  524. where we can always

  525. impose our will?

  526. What if greatness

  527. is submission

  528. to the Father's way?

  529. What if the best

  530. and greatest way

  531. to be human

  532. is not freedom

  533. from the Father,

  534. but following the Father?

  535. Like, think about that

  536. for a second.

  537. If greatness

  538. is about getting

  539. our own way

  540. and it's not about

  541. going God's way,

  542. what kind of a world

  543. would that lead to?

  544. Everyone pursuing greatness

  545. and thus everyone

  546. pursuing the power

  547. and authority

  548. to go their own way.

  549. What would ensue?

  550. What would ensue

  551. but vicious,

  552. cutthroat competition

  553. and division

  554. and hatred?

  555. And I mean,

  556. that's exactly

  557. what happens here

  558. with the other ten disciples.

  559. Verse 24 says,

  560. they're indignant.

  561. Yo, bro,

  562. you asked your mom,

  563. you tried to use your mom

  564. to manipulate Jesus

  565. into one upping us

  566. in the kingdom of God?

  567. Their misunderstanding

  568. of greatness

  569. only turned community

  570. into competition

  571. and friendships

  572. into fighting.

  573. So Jesus sets

  574. all of them straight

  575. in verse 25.

  576. You know that the rulers

  577. of the Gentiles

  578. lord it over them

  579. and their high officials

  580. or as it says

  581. in the Greek,

  582. the great ones

  583. exercise authority

  584. over them.

  585. And what he's saying

  586. is that in every other kingdom,

  587. in every other kingdom,

  588. rulers are overlords

  589. and the great ones

  590. wield authority.

  591. And to them,

  592. this makes complete sense,

  593. right?

  594. Because why wouldn't

  595. rulers rule

  596. over those who are under them?

  597. And why wouldn't

  598. the great ones

  599. exercise authority

  600. over the lesser ones,

  601. right?

  602. But according to Jesus,

  603. verse 26,

  604. not so with you.

  605. Not so in my kingdom,

  606. he says,

  607. for unlike any other,

  608. Jesus' kingdom

  609. is an upside-down kingdom.

  610. With no social hierarchy,

  611. it's ordered by an economy

  612. of love and service.

  613. Verse 26,

  614. not so with you,

  615. Jesus says.

  616. Instead,

  617. whoever wants to become

  618. great among you

  619. must be your servant

  620. and whoever wants

  621. to be first

  622. must be your slave.

  623. And you have to understand

  624. that especially

  625. in Jesus' ancient

  626. pre-Christian world,

  627. ruling,

  628. not serving,

  629. was the greatest status.

  630. A servant worked for hire

  631. to maintain

  632. their master's property.

  633. And a slave

  634. was forced

  635. into service,

  636. right?

  637. As one commentator puts it,

  638. a slave was virtually

  639. a non-person,

  640. someone with no rights,

  641. no existence

  642. of their own.

  643. Rather,

  644. they existed solely

  645. to serve others.

  646. Doesn't that sound awful?

  647. Like,

  648. these are the lowest,

  649. the lowest possible positions

  650. in society

  651. that Jesus is talking about.

  652. And yet,

  653. what he's doing here

  654. is he's reversing

  655. their status

  656. to great and first

  657. in the kingdom economy.

  658. And not in some,

  659. like,

  660. abstract,

  661. conceptual,

  662. idealistic way,

  663. but he makes it personal.

  664. He holds himself

  665. the king of kings,

  666. the king of the kingdom of God

  667. to the same standard.

  668. And he offers himself

  669. as the prime example

  670. of this servant-hearted,

  671. even self-sacrificing

  672. greatness.

  673. Verse 27.

  674. And whoever wants

  675. to be first

  676. must be your slave,

  677. just as

  678. the Son of Man

  679. did not come

  680. to be served,

  681. but to serve,

  682. and to give his life

  683. as a ransom

  684. for many.

  685. Jesus points them

  686. to true greatness

  687. by pointing them

  688. to his cross.

  689. He's saying,

  690. I'm the Messiah.

  691. I'm the king.

  692. And even I didn't come

  693. to be served,

  694. but to serve.

  695. And not just to serve,

  696. but to sacrifice,

  697. to sacrifice my whole life

  698. as a ransom.

  699. So according to Jesus,

  700. greatness doesn't primarily

  701. consist in getting,

  702. but in giving.

  703. Not in asserting supremacy,

  704. but in assuming servanthood.

  705. And Jesus calls

  706. every citizen

  707. of his kingdom,

  708. both then

  709. and now today,

  710. to pursue

  711. this kind of greatness

  712. through self-denying,

  713. sacrificial service

  714. after the pattern

  715. of his cross.

  716. Now I wish

  717. I could end

  718. the sermon here,

  719. right?

  720. But I'm pretty sure

  721. that for a lot of us,

  722. myself included,

  723. like for those of us

  724. who've grown up

  725. in the church,

  726. and honestly,

  727. even for those of us here

  728. who aren't even Christians,

  729. a sermon like this

  730. probably seems

  731. pretty standard,

  732. unsurprising,

  733. and therefore redundant,

  734. and probably uninspiring,

  735. right?

  736. No duh,

  737. Pastor Andrew.

  738. Of course a Christian minister

  739. is going to get behind

  740. the pulpit

  741. and say something like this.

  742. Yeah, we got it.

  743. Be more like Jesus.

  744. Serve more like Jesus.

  745. Love more like Jesus.

  746. Sacrifice more like Jesus.

  747. Okie dokie.

  748. I'll try harder this week.

  749. I'll try harder

  750. to wash a few more dishes

  751. at home, right?

  752. To give a little bit more

  753. effort at work.

  754. To block out

  755. Saturday, June 24th,

  756. on my calendar

  757. for the next Project Peace

  758. day of service, right?

  759. How's that for

  760. sacrificial service?

  761. I got this.

  762. I got this.

  763. And I don't at all mean

  764. to discourage

  765. or downplay

  766. any such resolutions.

  767. But if try harder

  768. is all that you've heard

  769. today,

  770. then I've totally

  771. failed you

  772. and you haven't

  773. heard the gospel.

  774. Dude, this isn't some

  775. moralistic,

  776. love your neighbor better,

  777. give more,

  778. serve more sermon.

  779. If all we heard

  780. from Jesus today

  781. is a challenge

  782. to make some

  783. moderate behavioral

  784. modifications,

  785. then I'm afraid

  786. we all have still

  787. missed the crux

  788. of the cross

  789. and the greatness

  790. of greatness.

  791. Like really,

  792. if our only takeaway

  793. from Jesus' words here

  794. is to just

  795. moderately try

  796. a little bit harder

  797. to love our neighbors

  798. like Jesus,

  799. then honestly,

  800. we're probably

  801. not actually pursuing

  802. the greatness

  803. that God wants

  804. for us.

  805. But some other

  806. kind of greatness,

  807. another kind of greatness

  808. patterned more

  809. after a conventional crown

  810. than Jesus'

  811. crown of thorns.

  812. And if that's the case,

  813. then we have totally

  814. missed the crux

  815. of the cross

  816. and the greatness

  817. of Jesus' greatness.

  818. greatness.

  819. And we need to be

  820. honest with ourselves

  821. if that's the case.

  822. Because if that's the case,

  823. the good news about Jesus

  824. isn't actually

  825. very good news to us.

  826. And we can't even

  827. call it a gospel.

  828. Like perhaps the good news

  829. of Jesus

  830. that the way up

  831. is down,

  832. that the cross

  833. precedes the crown,

  834. that it is better

  835. to give than to receive.

  836. Perhaps this news

  837. about God

  838. becoming a servant

  839. and humbling himself

  840. unto death

  841. on a cross

  842. to pay the ransom

  843. for his beloved people,

  844. perhaps we find this

  845. to be more of a threat

  846. to our pursuit of greatness

  847. than actual good news.

  848. Maybe we prefer

  849. alternate empires

  850. and don't actually

  851. want to live

  852. in a kingdom

  853. where just anyone

  854. can be great

  855. not through self-assertion

  856. but through

  857. self-abandonment.

  858. You see,

  859. that's what we really

  860. need to consider

  861. this morning.

  862. Not just whether

  863. we understand

  864. Jesus' teaching

  865. about greatness

  866. with our heads

  867. and not even just

  868. whether we are

  869. copying Jesus'

  870. model of greatness

  871. with our hands,

  872. we need to consider

  873. whether we are

  874. truly convinced

  875. of Jesus'

  876. cross-shaped

  877. greatness

  878. in our hearts.

  879. Whether we believe

  880. what he says

  881. about true greatness

  882. and greatness'

  883. inextricable

  884. link

  885. to his cross.

  886. Or else,

  887. all this stuff

  888. about self-denial

  889. and submission

  890. and sacrifice

  891. and service,

  892. not only will

  893. we never be able

  894. to live it out,

  895. but we won't want to

  896. because it won't make

  897. any sense to us.

  898. See,

  899. if we only read

  900. this passage of Scripture

  901. as a word from Jesus

  902. about how we're supposed

  903. to live and die

  904. for others

  905. just like he did,

  906. we've missed

  907. the most important part

  908. of what he's saying.

  909. Like,

  910. yes,

  911. we ought to live

  912. and die

  913. for others like Jesus,

  914. but it's only when

  915. we first realize

  916. that he is the one

  917. who has lived

  918. and died

  919. for us.

  920. That we will ever

  921. even understand

  922. how we can do

  923. the same

  924. for others.

  925. The crux of the cross

  926. is that the bitter cup

  927. reserved for us.

  928. The bitter cup

  929. was reserved for us.

  930. The cup,

  931. the prophets

  932. and the psalmists

  933. spoke about foaming

  934. with bitter wrath

  935. and judgment

  936. reserved for all those

  937. who neglected

  938. to do justice

  939. and love mercy

  940. and walk humbly

  941. before their God.

  942. The poison cup,

  943. every single one of us

  944. deserve to drink.

  945. Jesus,

  946. though it was

  947. his worst nightmare

  948. and though

  949. he deserved nothing

  950. but the sweetest

  951. overflowing cup

  952. in the banquet

  953. of banquets in heaven,

  954. he drank our cup

  955. in our place.

  956. The creator of the universe

  957. came into the world,

  958. but his existence

  959. among us

  960. was not to be served

  961. as the creator

  962. that he is,

  963. but rather to serve

  964. his creatures

  965. as the savior

  966. that he chose

  967. to become

  968. graciously,

  969. voluntarily.

  970. And he gave his life

  971. in the place

  972. of our lives

  973. as a ransom

  974. to purchase

  975. our liberation.

  976. And guess what?

  977. The scriptures tell us

  978. that therefore,

  979. precisely because

  980. he humbled himself

  981. and became a servant

  982. unto death

  983. on a cross,

  984. God exalted him

  985. to the highest place

  986. and gave him the name

  987. above every name

  988. that every knee

  989. will bow

  990. and every tongue

  991. confess that he is Lord.

  992. The crucified servant

  993. is the great

  994. and exalted one,

  995. risen and seated on high.

  996. And this,

  997. this is the gospel.

  998. Good news

  999. of a better kingdom.

  1000. Good news

  1001. of a better identity,

  1002. a better purpose.

  1003. Good news

  1004. of a better way

  1005. to live.

  1006. The good news

  1007. that Jesus' greatness

1008. was not for the purpose

  1009. of serving himself,

  1010. nor our greatness

  1011. for the purpose

  1012. of serving ourselves.

  1013. The gospel

  1014. is the only news

  1015. that can liberate us

  1016. from our slavery

  1017. to ourselves

  1018. and make us cheerful,

  1019. sacrificial servants.

  1020. This transformational news

  1021. of the crucified

  1022. and exalted Christ.

  1023. Now, can you imagine?

  1024. Can you imagine

  1025. what kind of a spirit-filled people

  1026. the church might be

  1027. if we believed

  1028. this liberating gospel?

  1029. If we inhabited

  1030. this upside-down kingdom?

1031. And if we went forth

  1032. into our schools,

  1033. into our neighborhoods,

  1034. into our workplaces,

  1035. our clubs,

  1036. our homes,

  1037. subverting all

  1038. the broken hierarchies

  1039. and insisting

  1040. upon being servants,

  1041. willing to give

  1042. all of ourselves

1043. for the sake of others.

  1044. What if we were

  1045. the kind of people

  1046. that bore witness

  1047. to a cross-shaped greatness,

  1048. pursuing the liberation

  1049. of all those

  1050. held captive

1051. to all these lesser kingdoms

1052. other than the kingdom of Christ?

  1053. That's what

  1054. the greatest of Christ's

  1055. citizens do.

  1056. Because in Christ,

  1057. every obstacle

  1058. has already been removed.

1059. We don't need to worry

  1060. about being served.

1061. We don't need to be worried

  1062. about being served anymore.

  1063. Because Christ has already

1064. served us to the full.

1065. No more vying to sit

1066. at His right or left.

1067. We are happily seated with Him

  1068. in the heavenly places.

  1069. No more giving begrudgingly

  1070. out of our scarcity.

  1071. We can give lavishly

  1072. of ourselves,

  1073. even unto death,

1074. giving out of the spring

  1075. of His abundant

  1076. resurrection life.

  1077. Because Christ Church,

  1078. ours is the greatness

  1079. of Christ.

  1080. The cross-shaped

  1081. greatness of Christ.

  1082. A very existence

  1083. on this planet,

  1084. not primarily for ourselves,

  1085. but for the good

  1086. of the city.

1087. For the glory of Christ.

  1088. And that's the kind

  1089. of people He's wanting

  1090. to make us into.

1091. Will you pray with me?

  1092. Lord, we confess

  1093. that being a servant

1094. is not attractive to us.

1095. But as soon as we confess that,

  1096. we realize

  1097. that that must mean

  1098. that Jesus is not

  1099. that attractive.

1100. Help us to see the beauty

  1101. of a God

  1102. who became a servant.

1103. and help us to be so ravished

  1104. by that truth

  1105. that you make us

  1106. cheerful servants ourselves.

  1107. Pouring ourselves out.

1108. Not in a legalistic way,

1109. but out of love for Christ.

1110. The one who loved us,

  1111. gave Himself for us.

  1112. A ransom.

  1113. The one who drank

  1114. the cup for us.

  1115. We soften our hearts

  1116. to the gospel,

  1117. we pray.

  1118. In Jesus' name.

  1119. Amen.
