  5. Today's reading is from Matthew chapter 21, verses 1 to 17.

    Matthew 21:1–17

  6. This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet.

  7. Say to daughter Zion,

  8. See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

  9. The disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them.

  10. They brought the donkey and the colt and placed their cloaks on them for Jesus to sit on.

  11. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road,

  12. while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

  13. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted,

  14. Hosanna to the son of David.

  15. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

  16. Hosanna in the highest heaven.

  17. When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked,

  18. Who is this?

  19. The crowds answered,

  20. This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.

  21. Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there.

  22. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves.

  23. It is written, he said to them,

  24. My house will be called a house of prayer, but you are making it a den of robbers.

  25. The blind and the lame came to him at the temple and he healed them.

  26. But when the chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did,

  27. and the children shouting in the temple courts,

  28. Hosanna to the son of David, they were indignant.

  29. Do you hear what those children are saying?

  30. They asked him,

  31. Yes, replied Jesus.

  32. Have you never read?

  33. From the lips of children and infants, you, Lord, have called forth your praise.

  34. And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.

  35. This is the gospel of the Lord.

  36. Praise to you, Lord Christ.

  37. Good morning, Christ Church.

  38. This Palm Sunday is the day, and it's really the doorway through which we enter into Holy Week,

  39. at which time Christians all over the world every year gather together to read and to remember

  40. and to prayerfully celebrate the final days of Jesus leading up to his climactic crucifixion

  41. and his resounding resurrection.

  42. If you're here today and you're exploring Christianity,

  43. I want to say this is a wonderful time to have a front row seat into what Christianity is all about.

  44. If you've ever wondered why Christians see this as the turning point in history

  45. and the center point of humanity,

  46. if you've ever wondered how in the world can the life and the death of someone in the first century

  47. have an impact on me here in the 21st century,

  48. my life, my condition, my destiny,

  49. this is a great time.

  50. There's no better time, really, to get involved and to come and ask these questions.

  51. If you're a Christian, perhaps you've experienced many, many Holy Weeks through the years.

  52. You know Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday, Easter Sunday like they're old friends.

  53. And my prayer and hope for you this week is that you would be surprised by God,

  54. that his Son and his Spirit would meet you in some fresh and powerful ways.

  55. The Gospels have been described as passion narratives with long introductions.

  56. And that's because all four Gospels really spend the latter half of their narratives

  57. talking about the suffering of Jesus from four different angles, four different perspectives.

  58. That is that Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John, they give us a total of 30 chapters

  59. on this final week of Jesus' life leading up to his death on the cross.

  60. And so I imagine that even for those of us who are deeply familiar with these events,

  61. that somewhere in those 30 chapters,

  62. you might encounter something that you haven't encountered before.

  63. You might integrate this week something into your faith and life that you haven't integrated before.

  64. And that's my prayer, that the Lord would reveal more of himself to you,

  65. more of his presence and more of his power.

  66. So here's Palm Sunday.

  67. It's recorded for us in all four Gospels.

  68. What does it mean and why does it matter for us and for our lives?

  69. I think this narrative before us in Matthew 21 tells us that

  70. Jesus is the King who rides a donkey and transforms the temple.

  71. Jesus is the King who rides a donkey and transforms the temple.

  72. I want to focus for a minute on this theme of Jesus as the King.

  73. A lot of us, we assume that on Palm Sunday,

  74. he kind of just stumbles into Jerusalem and sees the reaction of the crowd.

  75. And he says, oh, shucks.

  76. Okay, I guess, I guess.

  77. You know, I'll go along with this.

  78. But really, Jesus is this reflective theologian and a strategic revolutionary

  79. who's given a great deal of thought and energy to what he's going to do

  80. and what he's going to say to intentionally bring his story to a climax

  81. and to bring his public vocation to its proper conclusion.

  82. And so what we have here is premeditated symbolic action.

  83. Jesus is making all these decisive, calculated arrangements

  84. to enter into the holy city on this particular Passover feast.

  85. In verses 2 to 3, he's giving detailed directions to his advance team.

  86. And he says, this is how I want you to set up the staged campaign.

  87. And in many ways, Jesus is recreating an enthronement scene.

  88. In the ancient Near East, a king would go out to battle.

  89. They would defeat their enemies.

  90. And then they would return in victory.

  91. And they'd be welcomed back into their capital city with great celebration.

  92. And Jesus says, that's what we're doing.

  93. For one mile, for 30 minutes, there's going to be this red carpet event,

  94. this ticker tape parade where people are going to welcome their king

  95. in this royal reception and procession.

  96. Now, how do the crowds and how do the disciples respond to this?

  97. Well, it says in verse 8,

  98. that a very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road

  99. while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

  100. Now, you can imagine a person visiting our city

  101. and you see a crowd of people taking off their very nice and very expensive jackets

  102. to lay them down in the dirt for people and animals to walk on.

  103. And what do you conclude?

  104. You conclude this must be a very important person,

  105. a person that's worthy of great respect and great honor.

  106. You also conclude this is a great time to be in the dry cleaning business

  107. because that's a lot of dirty jackets on the ground.

  108. And what about these branches?

  109. The Gospel of John tells us that these are palm branches.

  110. And every Jew would know the meaning of this

  111. because 200 years before this time, there had been a Jewish rebellion.

  112. The Greek Empire had been oppressing the Jews,

  113. had outlawed their practices of Sabbath and Scripture

  114. and the sacrament of circumcision.

  115. They went and set up pagan idols in all the Jewish towns.

  116. They even set up pagan idols in the temple in Jerusalem itself.

  117. And there was this one family, the Maccabean family.

  118. They led a rebellion that was successful

  119. and enabled Israel to practice their faith freely again.

  120. And that's what's celebrated in the festival of Hanukkah.

  121. But after that great rebellion,

  122. this family made a crest and the nation minted new coins.

  123. And you know what was on that crest and on those coins?

  124. Palm branches.

  125. Palm branches became the symbol of the nation.

  126. It became a symbol of resistance and revolt.

  127. It became a symbol of liberation and freedom.

  128. And so they're laying down their coats,

  129. but they're also laying down their palms before Jesus.

  130. And what else does it say that the crowds give to him?

  131. It says in verse 9 that the crowds went ahead of him

  132. and those followed behind him and they shouted.

  133. They shouted.

  134. Now, why are they shouting so loudly?

  135. Well, if you go back and you skim the Gospel of Matthew,

  136. you can read all about these great deeds of supernatural power

  137. that Jesus performed over Satan,

  138. over the demons,

  139. over disease and seizures and paralysis,

  140. where he healed people who were crippled

  141. and he healed people who were blind.

  142. And he fed 5,000 people

  143. and he calmed the storm

  144. and he raised the dead.

  145. And most outrageously of all,

  146. he said to people,

  147. your sins are forgiven.

  148. Jesus is exercising the power

  149. and the authority of God

  150. over sickness

  151. and over nature

  152. and over death

  153. and even over our greatest problem.

  154. Sin is selfishly ignoring our Creator God

  155. and Jesus says,

  156. that's okay,

  157. I can deal with that too.

  158. And that's why these people say,

  159. this isn't just one king

  160. in a long line of kings.

  161. This is the king.

  162. This is God's only chosen king.

  163. And so they're shouting at the top of their voices

  164. and what are they saying?

  165. They're saying,

  166. Hosanna to the Son of David.

  167. Blessed is he

  168. who comes in the name of the Lord.

  169. Hosanna in the highest heaven.

  170. Hosanna in the highest heaven.

  171. This is Passover.

  172. And so this is one of their Passover hymns,

  173. Psalm 118.

  174. And it basically means,

  175. long live God's king.

  176. Because all through Moses and the prophets,

  177. all through the Old Testament,

  178. they were,

  179. Israel was looking for a king

  180. in the line of David

  181. who would come

  182. and put everything right.

  183. This is a victory chant

  184. of Israel's hope

  185. that God will help us,

  186. that God will save us.

  187. That's what Hosanna means.

  188. God, save us.

  189. Come and defeat our foes.

  190. Come and bring deliverance to your people.

  191. Come and establish your kingdom of peace

  192. in its fullest measure.

  193. Now, I believe that hope for a king

  194. is not just a Jewish hope,

  195. but it's a deeply human hope.

  196. And of course,

  197. there's a bit of a problem

  198. because we're Americans

  199. and we don't suffer our sovereigns lightly,

  200. do we?

  201. We like to be our own masters

  202. and the authorities of our own lives

  203. and in charge of our own selves, right?

  204. You look at the flag

  205. of the Commonwealth of Virginia

  206. and what does it say?

  207. It says,

  208. Sic semper tyrannis,

  209. thus always to tyrants,

  210. where it has Lady Liberty

  211. or Lady Justice,

  212. I'm not sure which.

  213. She has her foot on the chest of a king

  214. who's lying on the ground

  215. and his crown is toppled off of his head.

  216. Thus always to tyrants

  217. is what we Americans say.

  218. This is how we like our government,

  219. of the people,

  220. by the people,

  221. and for the people.

  222. And yet,

  223. there's a tension there for us

  224. because even though we're Americans,

  225. most of our literature

  226. and most of our movies

  227. abounds with kings and queens

  228. and royal figures

  229. and messianic heroes.

  230. Why is that?

  231. Why are we so fascinated

  232. by royal weddings?

  233. I know some of you are.

  234. Royal babies,

  235. royal coronations.

  236. Why is that?

  237. Well,

  238. C.S. Lewis wrote an essay in 1943

  239. and he says this.

  240. He says,

  241. We Britons should rejoice

  242. that we have contrived

  243. to reach a much legal democracy

  244. without losing our ceremonial monarchy.

  245. A man's reaction to monarchy

  246. is a kind of test.

  247. Monarchy can be easily debunked,

  248. but watch the faces.

  249. Mark the accents of the debunkers.

  250. These are the men

  251. whose taproot in Eden

  252. has been cut.

  253. Whom no rumor

  254. of the polyphony,

  255. the dance can reach.

  256. Men to whom pebbles

  257. laid in a row

  258. are more beautiful

  259. than an arch.

  260. Now,

  261. that's an Oxford professor's way

  262. of insulting me,

  263. right?

  264. And people like me.

  265. But here's what he says.

  266. He says,

  267. Yet even if they desire equality,

  268. they cannot reach it.

  269. Where men

  270. are forbidden

  271. to honor a king,

  272. they honor millionaires,

  273. athletes,

  274. or film stars instead.

  275. Even famous prostitutes

  276. or gangsters.

  277. For spiritual nature,

  278. like bodily nature,

  279. will be served,

  280. deny it food,

  281. and it will gobble poison.

  282. See,

  283. Lewis is telling us

  284. that in our heart of hearts,

  285. we long to honor a king.

  286. And you can tell yourself

  287. you don't need a king,

  288. but your spiritual nature

  289. says otherwise.

  290. We're starving

  291. to crown someone

  292. who has the authority

  293. to give us identity

  294. and belonging

  295. and meaning

  296. and purpose

  297. and significance

  298. and value.

  299. We're longing to say

  300. to someone

  301. who's much greater

  302. than ourselves,

  303. much higher

  304. than ourselves,

  305. please tell me

  306. that I matter.

  307. Please give me

  308. a peace

  309. that I cannot achieve

  310. on my own.

  311. Please give me

  312. a glory

  313. that's greater

  314. than what I've got.

  315. Now,

  316. why do we do that

  317. as human beings

  318. psychologically

  319. and culturally?

  320. Well,

  321. before the breaking

  322. of our world,

  323. the human race

  324. stood in the presence

  325. of the true king

  326. in absolute glory

  327. and splendor,

  328. a king of justice

  329. and power

  330. and wisdom,

  331. a king of great compassion

  332. and nobility

  333. and beauty

  334. who was shining

  335. like the sun

  336. and yet evil

  337. entered our world

  338. and we became

  339. our own masters

  340. and we lost

  341. that king

  342. and yet we did gain

  343. this promise

  344. in Genesis 3.15

  345. that said

  346. this great one

  347. is going to come

  348. and he's going to

  349. trample on evil

  350. and even though

  351. he will be wounded

  352. and he'll suffer terribly,

  353. he will triumph,

  354. right?

  355. And the whole Bible

  356. from that point on

  357. is just rustling

  358. with this whisper

  359. and this rumor

  360. of a king

  361. who's going to come

  362. so that on Palm Sunday

  363. when Jesus comes in

  364. and people begin

  365. to treat him

  366. as a king,

  367. he does not blush,

  368. he smiles.

  369. Jesus receives

  370. their praises

  371. and he embraces

  372. their hopes

  373. and he affirms

  374. all of their desires

  375. and he says,

  376. yes indeed,

  377. I have come

  378. in the name

  379. of the Lord.

  380. I do intend

  381. to be your king,

  382. I do hear

  383. your cries

  384. of Hosanna

  385. and I do intend

  386. to save you.

  387. Now those are

  388. incredible,

  389. audacious,

  390. implicit,

  391. really immodest

  392. claims

  393. that Jesus

  394. is making

  395. on Palm Sunday

  396. and I believe

  397. his dramatic entry

  398. into the capital city

  399. is a throwing down

  400. of the gauntlet.

  401. It's Jesus saying,

  402. crown me

  403. or kill me.

  404. I'm either

  405. of ultimate

  406. importance

  407. or of no

  408. importance

  409. whatsoever

  410. but the one

  411. thing I cannot

  412. be is of

  413. marginal importance

  414. to any of you.

  415. Jesus is saying,

  416. I've not come

  417. to be admired,

  418. no,

  419. I've come to force

  420. my identity

  421. upon you.

  422. I've come

  423. to be a supreme

  424. and absolute monarch

  425. who's to be worshipped

  426. and to be obeyed.

  427. And so if you're

  428. here today

  429. and you're exploring

  430. Christianity,

  431. I want to ask you

  432. as you hear

  433. about these mass

  434. shootings,

  435. you know,

  436. as you take in

  437. the news

  438. about these

  439. school shootings

  440. with these

  441. small children

  442. and their teachers,

  443. isn't there

  444. something inside

  445. of you

  446. that's crying

  447. out and longing

  448. for evil

  449. to be trampled

  450. upon

  451. and to be triumphed

  452. over?

  453. And my question

  454. to you is,

  455. if that longing

  456. is in your heart,

  457. how in the world

  458. is that going

  459. to happen?

  460. How will that

  461. possibly happen

  462. within the reigning

  463. plausibility structures

  464. and paradigms

  465. of modernity

  466. and post-modernity?

  467. Who will make

  468. it happen?

  469. Who will usher

  470. in a new age?

  471. And if you can't

  472. come up with anyone

  473. to fill in that blank,

  474. I want to ask you,

  475. might it be

  476. that Jesus

  477. really is the king

  478. who's come to undo

  479. all the powers

  480. of evil

  481. and Jesus is the king

  482. who's come to

  483. ultimately eradicate

  484. the presence of evil

  485. in this world?

  486. Your heart is crying

  487. out for that.

  488. If you're a Christian,

  489. you've come to see

  490. that Jesus is

  491. your supreme

  492. and absolute monarch,

  493. but the question

  494. for you today is,

  495. how are you going

  496. to roll out

  497. the red carpet

  498. for your king

  499. this week

  500. and in this next season?

  501. How will you put

  502. your donkey

  503. at his service,

  504. as it were?

  505. How will you put

  506. all of your possessions

  507. at his disposal

  508. for him to use

  509. as he sees fit?

  510. How will we spread

  511. out our cloaks

  512. for him to walk upon

  513. and give him

  514. our highest

  515. and our best

  516. to honor him

  517. this week?

  518. How will we wave

  519. our palm branches

  520. and give him

  521. public allegiance

  522. and let the world

  523. know that all

  524. of our hopes

  525. for freedom

  526. and liberation

  527. are found in him

  528. and him alone?

  529. How will we sing

  530. these psalms

  531. and hymns

  532. and songs of the Spirit

  533. giving him

  534. the passionate worship

  535. that he deserves?

  536. I want to encourage

  537. you this week,

  538. if you do see Jesus

  539. as your king,

  540. to wake up every morning

  541. praying this prayer,

  542. blessed are you.

  543. Blessed are you

  544. who's come

  545. in the name

  546. of the Lord.

  547. Hosanna.

  548. Save us.

  549. Lord, save us.

  550. Friends, Jesus is the king.

  551. But Jesus is not just any king.

  552. He's the king

  553. who rides a donkey.

  554. Jesus is the king

  555. who rides a donkey.

  556. Now, many of us,

  557. this idea,

  558. this notion

  559. of living under a sovereign

  560. is perhaps threatening.

  561. I mean, I'm like you.

  562. I want to be in control.

  563. I don't want to submit

  564. my will and my desires

  565. to the will and desires

  566. of another.

  567. And I've read enough

  568. history like you

  569. to know that history

  570. is full of kings

  571. and queens

  572. that are marked

  573. by overweening pride

  574. and oppressive power.

  575. Kings who rule

  576. not to enhance human life

  577. but to diminish

  578. human life.

  579. But I want to suggest

  580. to you today

  581. that Jesus is different.

  582. I want you to notice

  583. his chosen means

  584. of transportation.

  585. It's not a war horse.

  586. It's a donkey.

  587. And in the first century

  588. and in our century,

  589. everybody looks at that

  590. and goes,

  591. what?

  592. Jesus,

  593. what are you thinking?

  594. This is your moment

  595. to make history.

  596. This is your moment

  597. to be like Alexander the Great

  598. and Caesar Augustus.

  599. This is your moment

  600. to have your name up there

  601. with Attila the Hun

  602. and Charlemagne

  603. and William the Conqueror

  604. and Genghis Khan

  605. and Napoleon.

  606. Jesus,

  607. don't you realize

  608. that right now

  609. is your moment.

  610. You can either triumph

  611. and deliver

  612. or you can be trampled upon

  613. and demolished.

  614. But this is the moment.

  615. This is a do or die situation.

  616. So Jesus,

  617. let us come around you

  618. with all of our wisdom

  619. and be your PR consultants

  620. for a moment.

  621. Let us be your marketing team.

  622. If we're going to give you a brand,

  623. if we're going to give you a logo,

  624. if we're going to give you a message,

  625. we really want to encourage you,

  626. Jesus,

  627. to come up with something

  628. that exudes power and pride.

  629. And what does Jesus do?

  630. How does he respond

  631. to this great advice

  632. that we have to give him?

  633. He chooses a little baby donkey.

  634. And he says,

  635. I don't need the mighty steed

  636. of a triumphant king.

  637. I want this donkey.

  638. And Jesus,

  639. when he says that,

  640. he's making a statement

  641. about the kind of king

  642. he would be

  643. because he's a serious student

  644. of the Bible.

  645. His main purpose and aim

  646. is to bring his life

  647. under the authority

  648. of the Bible

  649. and to live in alignment

  650. with the power

  651. of God's word.

  652. And he knows,

  653. since he's been

  654. a small child,

  655. he's memorized

  656. the prophecies of the Bible

  657. like this one

  658. in Genesis 49.

  659. It says,

  660. the scepter of the king

  661. will not depart from Judah

  662. nor the ruler's staff

  663. from between his feet

  664. until he to whom it belongs

  665. shall come

  666. and the obedience

  667. of the nation

  668. shall be his.

  669. He will tether his donkey

  670. to a vine,

  671. his colt

  672. to the choicest branch.

  673. Jesus also probably

  674. memorized these words

  675. that are in our text today,

  676. Zechariah chapter 9.

    Zechariah 9 chapter mention

  677. which says,

  678. Rejoice greatly,

  679. daughter Zion.

  680. Shout,

  681. daughter Jerusalem.

  682. See,

  683. your king comes to you

  684. righteous and victorious,

  685. lowly

  686. and riding on a donkey,

  687. on a colt,

  688. the foal of a donkey.

  689. And then the next verse

  690. that's not printed for us,

  691. it says this.

  692. It says,

  693. I will take away

  694. the chariots

  695. from Ephraim,

  696. the war horses

  697. from Jerusalem.

  698. The battle bow

  699. will be broken.

  700. He will proclaim peace

  701. to the nations.

  702. His rule will extend

  703. from sea to sea

  704. and from the river

  705. to the ends

  706. of the earth.

  707. Jesus says,

  708. my brand,

  709. my logo,

  710. my message

  711. is definitively

  712. not the chariot

  713. and not the war horse

  714. and not the battle bow.

  715. And Jesus has so arranged

  716. this moment

  717. to deliberately fulfill

  718. these prophecies.

  719. He says,

  720. don't get me wrong,

  721. I have come to rule

  722. and to reign

  723. as your king,

  724. but I've not come

  725. to rule

  726. in any of the ways

  727. you're used to ruling.

  728. He says,

  729. I've not come

  730. in the shining armor

  731. of a war horse.

  732. He says,

  733. I've come to make

  734. donkeys great again.

  735. This is a king

  736. who's going to ride Eeyore.

  737. He's riding this beast

  738. that's fit for a child,

  739. that's fit for a hobbit.

  740. A beast of such

  741. extraordinary humility.

  742. Now,

  743. I want us to think

  744. for a second.

  745. Why do we resist

  746. submitting to a sovereign?

  747. Well,

  748. we resist

  749. because a sovereign

  750. by nature

  751. demands

  752. total surrender,

  753. an exclusive allegiance,

  754. an absolute obedience.

  755. And Jesus says,

  756. I have,

  757. in fact,

  758. come to demand

  759. those things of you,

  760. but I'm unlike

  761. any king

  762. the world has ever seen.

  763. Again,

  764. if you go back

  765. and read the Gospels,

  766. you see Jesus

  767. time and time again.

  768. First of all,

  769. he resists

  770. the offer of the devil

  771. to rule over

  772. the kingdoms

  773. of this world

  774. through illicit means.

  775. And then,

  776. having resisted

  777. that offer,

  778. he goes out

  779. and he preaches

  780. the Sermon on the Mount

  781. where he says,

  782. love your enemies,

  783. do good to those

  784. who hate you,

  785. pray for those

  786. who persecute you,

  787. and blessed

  788. are the peacemakers

  789. for they will be called

  790. the children of God.

  791. At one point,

  792. they tried to come

  793. and make Jesus king

  794. by force,

  795. but he resisted

  796. that as well

  797. and he withdrew himself

  798. into the wilderness.

  799. And we'll see

  800. later this week

  801. when he's on trial

  802. before the Roman Empire,

  803. on trial under

  804. Pontius Pilate,

  805. he tells Pilate,

  806. he says,

  807. if my kingdom

  808. were of this world,

  809. my people would fight

  810. for me.

  811. But as it is,

  812. my kingdom

  813. is from another place

  814. and therefore,

  815. it's altogether

  816. different

  817. from your kingdom.

  818. Friends,

  819. Jesus rides

  820. in humble

  821. and meek

  822. and gentle

  823. and lowly

  824. on a donkey

  825. to tell us,

  826. I'm a king

  827. that you can trust.

  828. My power

  829. is the power

  830. of my lowliness.

  831. My power

  832. is the power

  833. of giving up

  834. my power.

  835. Friedrich Nietzsche

  836. philosophized

  837. in the 19th century,

  838. he philosophized

  839. about the will

  840. to power.

  841. He said,

  842. modernity

  843. should be marked

  844. by dominating,

  845. an ethic

  846. of dominating power.

  847. And then

  848. in Nietzsche's wake

  849. came another philosopher,

  850. his successor,

  851. Michel Foucault

  852. in the 20th century

  853. and he said,

  854. we should unmask

  855. all of these

  856. power relations,

  857. these pervasive,

  858. internalized,

  859. structured powers

  860. of modernity

  861. need to be

  862. subverted

  863. into a post-modernity

  864. if any of us

  865. are going to survive.

  866. And of course,

  867. the world we're living in

  868. in the 21st century

  869. is some strange brew,

  870. some powerful cocktail

  871. between Nietzsche

  872. and Foucault,

  873. is it not?

  874. But what if the world

  875. needs not

  876. the uber power

  877. of Nietzsche

  878. or the deconstructed

  879. power

  880. of Foucault?

  881. No.

  882. But what if the world

  883. needs a different kind

  884. of power altogether?

  885. The power of a sovereign

  886. who comes not to take life

  887. but to give life.

  888. The power of a sovereign

  889. who comes not bearing arms

  890. but comes to disarm us all.

  891. This donkey king

  892. comes to us

  893. not saying

  894. surrender or else.

  895. No,

  896. he comes with no horse,

  897. no sword,

  898. no army.

  899. He does not use

  900. any brute force

  901. to seize

  902. and coerce

  903. and demolish

  904. and pillage

  905. and enslave

  906. and oppress.

  907. He comes vulnerable

  908. and defenseless

  909. on a donkey.

  910. And he says,

  911. I've come to serve you

  912. as a gentle

  913. and a lowly

  914. prince of peace.

  915. I've come not to threaten you

  916. and to surrender.

  917. I've come,

  918. in fact,

  919. to surrender myself

  920. and my life

  921. to you.

  922. And we're going to see that

  923. this next week

  924. as we go through the events

  925. of Holy Week.

  926. Jesus washing

  927. the feet of his disciples.

  928. Jesus giving

  929. the poured out

  930. wine

  931. and the broken bread.

  932. And Jesus literally

  933. doing that

  934. on the cross.

  935. Taking our judgment

  936. upon himself.

  937. God's just judgment

  938. for our sins.

  939. And again,

  940. if you're exploring

  941. Christianity,

  942. is there any other

  943. power like this?

  944. Is this not utterly

  945. unique in all the world,

  946. all the philosophies

  947. of this world,

  948. all the religions,

  949. all the life systems

  950. of this world?

  951. Is there any other

  952. kind of power

  953. like this?

  954. And even more

  955. to the point,

  956. what are you afraid

  957. is going to happen

  958. to you

  959. if you submit yourself

  960. to this donkey king?

  961. He's not going

  962. to oppress you.

  963. He's going to liberate you

  964. and humanize you.

  965. He's not going

  966. to disempower you.

  967. He's going to empower you

  968. with this sacrificial love.

  969. And so,

  970. I want to implore you,

  971. open the gates

  972. of your city.

  973. Open the doors

  974. of your heart

  975. to welcome this king

  976. of lowliness,

  977. this king of gentleness

  978. to come and be your king

  979. even this week.

  980. Jesus is the king

  981. and he rides

  982. on a donkey.

  983. but he also comes

  984. to transform the temple

  985. and I just want to say

  986. a final word

  987. about this transformation

  988. of the temple.

  989. Jesus comes

  990. and he comes over

  991. the Mount of Olives.

  992. He comes in full view

  993. of Jerusalem

  994. and its magnificent temple

  995. at the center

  996. which is not only

  997. the beating heart

  998. of Israel,

  999. it's the center

  1000. of the cosmos.

  1001. This is the place

  1002. where heaven and earth

  1003. come together,

  1004. the house of

  1005. I am who I am

  1006. where he dwells

  1007. among his people.

  1008. And it says

  1009. Jesus in verse 12,

1010. he entered into that place,

1011. he entered the temple courts

  1012. and he drove out

  1013. all who were buying

  1014. and selling there.

  1015. He overturned the tables

  1016. and the money changers

  1017. and the benches

  1018. of those selling doves.

  1019. Why in the world

  1020. is Jesus relocating

  1021. all the people

  1022. and rearranging

  1023. all the furniture?

  1024. Why is he disrupting

  1025. this sacrificial system?

  1026. Doesn't he know

  1027. this is not how

  1028. to win friends

  1029. and influence people?

  1030. Why in the world

  1031. is he making

  1032. such a ruckus

  1033. in the temple

  1034. of Almighty God?

  1035. Well he says

  1036. in verse 12,

  1037. he says,

  1038. verse 13,

  1039. he says,

  1040. it is written,

1041. my house will be called

  1042. a house of prayer

  1043. but you're making it

  1044. a den of robbers.

  1045. That's a provocative quote

  1046. from the prophet Jeremiah

  1047. where Jesus is begging

  1048. the question,

  1049. whose house is this?

  1050. And Jesus says,

  1051. well it's my house.

  1052. Wait,

  1053. what do you mean?

  1054. Jesus,

  1055. God's house

  1056. or your house?

  1057. Yes,

  1058. Jesus says.

  1059. This is the place

  1060. where you're to come

  1061. in contact

  1062. with your creator God.

  1063. The place where

  1064. by his word

  1065. and by prayer

  1066. and by the sacrifices

  1067. of blood

  1068. you can have

  1069. a personal,

  1070. intimate communion

  1071. and relationship

  1072. with God himself.

  1073. But Jesus is signaling

  1074. to us

  1075. that something

  1076. has gone deeply wrong

  1077. with this place

  1078. of sacrifice

  1079. and this place

  1080. of worship

  1081. and this is why

  1082. he's come

  1083. to enter Jerusalem.

  1084. This is why

  1085. he's marching

  1086. to Good Friday

  1087. so that he

  1088. can become

  1089. the true temple.

1090. So that he can become

  1091. the true priest

  1092. and the true sacrifice

  1093. and the true place

  1094. of communion

  1095. between humanity

  1096. and God.

  1097. He's come

  1098. so that people

  1099. who are far away

  1100. from this temple

  1101. can be brought near

  1102. to God

  1103. so that people

  1104. who are enemies

  1105. of this temple

  1106. can be made

  1107. children of God

  1108. and that's why

  1109. Jesus is not surprised

  1110. at all

  1111. by this great turn

  1112. from Palm Sunday

  1113. to Good Friday.

  1114. He comes in

  1115. as a king

  1116. on Palm Sunday

  1117. but he leaves

  1118. as a criminal

  1119. on Good Friday.

1120. He comes on a donkey

  1121. but he leaves

  1122. under a cross.

  1123. He comes hailed

  1124. with palms

  1125. but he leaves

  1126. bearing a crown

  1127. yet it's a crown

  1128. of thorns.

  1129. He comes in

  1130. hearing hosannas

  1131. but he leaves

  1132. with this cry

  1133. of crucify.

  1134. He comes in

  1135. bearing our praises

  1136. and yet he leaves

  1137. bearing our reproach.

  1138. So why Jesus?

  1139. Why?

1140. Why would you do that?

  1141. Why would you

  1142. so deliberately

  1143. and even joyfully

  1144. enter into

  1145. all of this suffering?

  1146. Well we'll learn

  1147. and hear it

1148. at the end of this week

  1149. from Matthew chapter 27

    Matthew 27:51

  1150. verse 51.

  1151. It says that

  1152. when Jesus Christ

  1153. our king

  1154. died on his cross

  1155. the veil

  1156. in this great

  1157. magnificent temple

  1158. that separated

  1159. a holy God

  1160. from unholy humanity

1161. would be torn in two

  1162. from top to bottom.

  1163. And that's a picture

  1164. of the very hands

  1165. of God

  1166. rending

  1167. this separation

  1168. between us.

  1169. Of God saying

  1170. as it were

  1171. my innocent sons

  1172. once for all

  1173. sacrifice

  1174. of himself

  1175. on his cross

  1176. is throwing down

  1177. the sin barriers

  1178. throwing down

  1179. this separation

  1180. so that the way

  1181. in

  1182. the way

  1183. into my holy

  1184. presence

  1185. is opened up

  1186. for all people.

  1187. The whole

  1188. wide world

  1189. can come back in

  1190. and that's why

  1191. our king

  1192. came

  1193. riding

  1194. on a donkey

  1195. to transform

  1196. this temple.

  1197. Jesus has come

  1198. to bring us

  1199. back to the

  1200. house

  1201. of almighty

  1202. God.

  1203. Jesus has come

  1204. so that

  1205. each of us

  1206. could be at home

  1207. again with our

  1208. heavenly father.

  1209. Jesus has come

  1210. so that we can

  1211. enjoy a relationship

  1212. with him

  1213. as dearly

  1214. loved

  1215. and dependent

  1216. children.

  1217. Each of us

  1218. enjoying such a

  1219. personal and intimate

  1220. communion with God

  1221. that our church

  1222. and our homes

  1223. and our very

  1224. hearts

  1225. might be called

  1226. a house

  1227. of prayer

  1228. so that God

  1229. can look upon us

  1230. that God can look

  1231. upon you

  1232. God can look

  1233. upon me

  1234. and he can say

  1235. that's

  1236. my house

  1237. that's the place

  1238. where I delight

  1239. to dwell

  1240. among these people

  1241. and in this place

  1242. this

  1243. is my home

  1244. and this is where

  1245. God wants us

  1246. to be at home

  1247. with him.

  1248. May it be so

  1249. as we enter

  1250. into this

  1251. most holy of weeks
