  5. This is a reading from the letter of Paul to the Romans.

    Romans 1:16–18

  6. Chapter 1, verses 16 to 18, and chapter 2, verses 1 to 16, as printed in your liturgy.

  7. For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes,

  8. first to the Jew, then to the Gentile.

  9. For in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed,

  10. a righteousness that is by faith from first to last,

  11. just as it is written, the righteous will live by faith.

  12. The wrath of God is being revealed,

  13. from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people,

  14. who suppress the truth by their wickedness.

  15. You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else.

  16. For at whatever point you judge another,

  17. you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things.

  18. Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.

  19. So when you, a mere human being, pass judgment on them, and yet do the same things,

  20. do you think you will escape God's judgment?

  21. Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance, and patience,

  22. not realizing that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?

  23. But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart,

  24. you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath,

  25. when his righteous judgment will be revealed.

  26. God will repay each person according to what they have done.

  27. To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor, and immortality,

  28. he will give eternal life.

  29. But for those who are self-seeking, and who reject the truth and follow evil,

  30. there will be wrath and anger.

  31. There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil,

  32. first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

  33. But glory, honor, and peace for everyone who does good,

  34. first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.

  35. For God does not show favoritism.

  36. All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law,

  37. and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law.

  38. For it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight,

  39. but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.

  40. Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the law,

  41. do by nature things required by the law,

  42. they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the law.

  43. They show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts.

  44. Their conscience is also bearing witness,

  45. and their thoughts sometimes accusing them,

  46. and at other times even defending them.

  47. This will take place on the day when God judges people's secrets

  48. through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

  49. This is the word of the Lord.

  50. Thanks be to God.

  51. Good morning, Christ Church.

  52. I do want to, like Andrew, just take a brief moment

  53. to honor Reverend Tim Keller,

  54. who departed this life on Friday

  55. and is now with his Savior at home in heaven.

  56. Tim planted Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City in 1989,

  57. and by the time I graduated from Reform Theological Seminary in 2005

  58. and accepted this call to come and plant a church in Berkeley,

  59. an Urban University church with my brother-in-law,

  60. the whole reason we did that was because

  61. we had accepted Tim Keller into our hearts.

  62. And we are here.

  63. I'm grateful for his model, his voice.

  64. I'm grateful for the money that Redeemer invested into Christ Church,

  65. the training Tim gave to us in those early days,

  66. the wisdom and resources that he's left behind.

  67. Tim loved Lord of the Rings,

  68. and in many ways he was like Gandalf in the Shire.

  69. You know, on the surface of things,

  70. you just thought he was there to set off fireworks at the birthday party,

  71. but really he was out in the world slaying dragons and fighting evil wizards.

  72. You know, and when you read the things that he wrote,

  73. especially in these last few years,

  74. you can see that he's doing very, very deep work.

  75. So we're super grateful for that,

  76. and I think Tim would be pleased that we are studying today

  77. the epistle to the Romans.

  78. So that's what we're going to keep doing.

  79. We're trying to get through the end of Romans chapter 8,

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  80. by the end of the summer, Lord willing.

  81. And we've done a slow burn here in Romans 1,

  82. and now we're going to go at a bit of a faster clip.

  83. So buckle up, because the Apostle Paul is taking us through these great doctrines,

  84. these great truths of the Christian faith,

  85. God's creation, the fall and depravity of human beings,

  86. the wrath and the righteousness of God,

  87. the atonement, justification, and all these wonderful truths.

  88. But so far, the Apostle Paul has told us that there are two ages,

  89. two realms that are being revealed.

  90. In verse 17 it says,

  91. in the gospel, the righteousness of God is revealed.

  92. And in verse 17 it says that the wrath of God is being revealed.

  93. And so there's this old age, this old realm of God's wrath,

  94. and there's this new age, this new realm of God's righteousness

  95. in the gospel of his Son.

  96. And Romans chapters 1 through 3 is showing us

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  97. what it means to be under God's wrath,

  98. so that we will see the necessity of and the power of the gospel

  99. to bring us out from under his wrath

  100. and to bring us up under the righteousness of God.

  101. Now, I know some of you weren't here last week,

  102. so let me repeat a few things that we said.

  103. We don't like to talk about wrath and condemnation and judgment,

  104. because it's super uncomfortable.

  105. But Jesus talked about it all the time,

  106. in fact, more than anybody else in the Bible.

  107. This is one of the greatest known texts in the Scriptures,

  108. John 3, 16.

  109. It says,

  110. God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son.

  111. Why?

  112. That whoever believes in him should not perish,

  113. should not perish spiritually and eternally

  114. under the condemnation and judgment of God.

  115. That text goes on and it says,

  116. whoever rejects the Son will not see life,

  117. for God's wrath remains on them.

  118. That's from John, the apostle of love.

  119. Right?

  120. Jesus goes on in John 5.

  121. He says,

  122. The Father judges no one,

  123. but has entrusted all judgment to the Son.

  124. Whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me

  125. has eternal life and will not be judged,

  126. but is crossed over from death to life.

  127. And Jesus' assumption and implication there

  128. is that until we've crossed over,

  129. we're still in death and we're still in judgment.

  130. So what is this wrath of God that Jesus insists upon over and over?

  131. We defined it last week as God's holy hatred of evil,

  132. his settled righteous opposition to the darkness,

  133. his uncompromising hostility against sin.

  134. And if we see love in God,

  135. we also need to see hatred in God

  136. because God hates whatever opposes that

  137. which is true and good and beautiful.

  138. God hates whatever defaces and damages

  139. and destroys his creation and his creatures.

  140. And if he didn't hate these things,

  141. he wouldn't be a God of love.

  142. He wouldn't necessarily be even God at all,

  143. a God worthy to be worshipped.

  144. And so Paul is laying out this argument for us

  145. that on the one hand,

  146. God's wrath, even now in human history,

  147. is being revealed as we give God up

  148. so God gives us up to our own self-centeredness.

  149. But he says there's coming a day

  150. when God's wrath will be revealed finally and fully

  151. on the final day of judgment.

  152. And this judgment of God is not peripheral

  153. to the story of Scripture.

  154. It's absolutely central to the Bible.

  155. And in this chapter, more than anywhere else,

  156. Paul outlines his picture of the final day of judgment.

  157. The word judge or judgment comes up nine times

  158. and he's saying that everybody is going to be judged

  159. by God separately, individually, and distinctly.

  160. And again, that's super uncomfortable for us,

  161. but the secular alternative of just getting rid of God

  162. and therefore getting rid of the wrath of God

  163. and substituting in the place of this doctrine

  164. a doctrine of materialism and nihilism,

  165. that actually creates way more problems than it solves.

  166. And so I'd like for you to just at least consider

  167. what Paul is saying here in Romans chapter two.

  168. And the gist is this,

  169. that God's judgment is universal,

  170. works righteousness is inconceivable,

  171. and gospel repentance is essential.

  172. God's judgment is universal,

  173. works righteousness is inconceivable,

  174. and gospel repentance is essential.

  175. First of all, God's judgment is universal.

  176. Verse one says,

  177. you therefore have no excuse,

  178. you who pass judgment on someone else,

  179. for at whatever point you judge another,

  180. you are condemning yourself,

  181. because you who pass judgment do the very same things.

  182. Paul turns his attention from these pagan Gentiles

  183. in Romans one to now talk about these Jews

  184. and moralists in Romans two.

  185. All these people who are ready to agree

  186. that yes, Paul,

  187. all these people in Romans one you just described

  188. who are vile and violent and vicious,

  189. all of those people deserve the wrath of God.

  190. They deserve to be judged.

  191. But their objection is that not everybody's like that.

  192. And some people have wonderful ideas about morality,

  193. and God has been very kind and good

  194. to give us these insights,

  195. and so surely we are not going to be judged

  196. and condemned by God.

  197. Because after all, we go to church,

  198. and we're good people,

  199. and we believe the Bible,

  200. and we offer prayers,

  201. and we have this religious and moral life,

  202. and surely we are living up to the God's standards

  203. of godliness and righteousness.

  204. Yes, the rest of humanity should be judged by God,

  205. but we over here ought to be protected and delivered.

  206. And Paul's dealing with people

  207. who have a false sense of assurance

  208. and a false sense of confidence before God.

  209. People who are smug,

  210. have a smug self-satisfaction and self-contentment,

  211. thinking that we're over here in this special category,

  212. and because we're special,

  213. we're therefore superior to other people.

  214. And how does Paul respond to this group?

  215. He says to them in verse one,

  216. he says,

  217. you have no excuse.

  218. Paul's setting out to prove in these three chapters

  219. that there's not one righteous person,

  220. not even one.

  221. There's no exception to that rule.

  222. And he wants to convince and convict

  223. these religious moralists of their own sinfulness,

  224. and that they too are going to be judged

  225. by the wrath of God,

  226. unless God acts,

  227. unless God intervenes.

  228. And so he says in verse three,

  229. so when you, a mere human,

  230. pass judgment on them,

  231. and yet do the same things,

  232. do you think you will escape God's judgment?

  233. Two times Paul's been talking about,

  234. you do the same things.

  235. You do the very same things.

  236. What is that?

  237. Well, the thesis of this entire section of this letter

  238. says that God is revealing his wrath

  239. against all godlessness and wickedness,

  240. all ungodliness and all unrighteousness.

  241. And we saw last week how that unfolds

  242. into deceitful idols

  243. and degraded bodies and depraved minds

  244. and decaying societies.

  245. And Paul's saying,

  246. you Jews,

  247. you religious and moral people,

  248. you do the very same things.

  249. If you just read the Old Testament,

  250. you'll see that the people of God

  251. sank down into these very same things.

  252. Prophet after prophet

  253. had to come to the people of God

  254. and list off their deplorable sins

  255. to these people who were claiming

  256. to have a special relationship with God,

  257. these people who were claiming

  258. to be utterly different

  259. than all the Gentile nations.

  260. God says,

  261. you're no different,

  262. you're doing the same things.

  263. And people would object to Paul

  264. and say,

  265. but Paul,

  266. that was then

  267. and that was their exceptions to that rule.

  268. And we are,

  269. we're not guilty of all those things.

  270. And Paul is at pains

  271. to say in this text

  272. that it's possible

  273. to be highly respectable people morally

  274. and yet to be ungodly.

  275. It's possible to be highly respectable people morally

  276. and yet to be ungodly.

  277. For as we saw last week,

  278. ungodliness is a failure

  279. to make God supreme in our lives

  280. and in the lives of other people.

  281. And there's no greater instance

  282. of ungodliness

  283. than the failure to see

  284. your need for a righteousness

  285. that comes not from you

  286. but from outside of yourself

  287. from God.

  288. The height of ungodliness

  289. is to think that you

  290. and your religious practices

  291. and you and your morality

  292. are enough to satisfy

  293. the demands of God.

  294. And so Paul says

  295. be very, very careful

  296. that you don't rely

  297. on your external

  298. and visible expressions

  299. of godliness and righteousness

  300. when internally

  301. and invisibly

  302. you church people,

  303. you Bible believing,

  304. praying people,

  305. you're doing the same things.

  306. And what are those same things?

  307. If you open your Bible

  308. and you turn back

  309. to Romans 1.29,

  310. Paul says

  311. they have become filled

  312. with every kind of wickedness,

  313. evil, greed, and depravity.

  314. They are full of envy,

  315. murder, strife, deceit, and malice.

  316. They are gossips, slanderers,

  317. God-haters,

  318. insolent, arrogant, and boastful.

  319. They invent ways of doing evil.

  320. They disobey their parents.

  321. They have no understanding,

  322. no fidelity,

  323. no love, no mercy.

  324. Paul is saying

  325. look inside of your own heart.

  326. You may not actually

  327. murder your neighbor,

  328. but look at the things

  329. in your heart

  330. that diminish other people

  331. and kill relationships

  332. with other people.

  333. Do you see inside

  334. of your own heart

  335. the things that Paul lists

  336. where he talks about greed,

  337. envy, deceit, and malice?

  338. Do you ever argue

  339. or gossip or slander?

  340. Do you ever feel

  341. a prideful sense

  342. of superiority

  343. to other people?

  344. You know,

  345. Paul is doing

  346. the exact same thing

  347. that Jesus does

  348. in the Sermon on the Mount

  349. when he talks about murder.

  350. Right?

  351. Jesus says

  352. in Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  353. he says,

  354. if you say

  355. to your brother

  356. or your sister,

  357. rakah,

  358. or you fool,

  359. you are in danger

  360. of the fire of hell,

  361. Jesus says.

  362. To say to another person,

  363. rakah,

  364. means you're a nobody.

  365. You're a nothing.

  366. And if you look

  367. at other people

  368. and you say

  369. you're not important

  370. and you look down

  371. your nose at them

  372. and you hold them

  373. in contempt

  374. and you're indifferent

  375. toward them,

  376. Jesus is saying

  377. you have the seed

  378. of murder in your heart.

  379. You have the spirit

  380. and the attitude

  381. of murder in your heart

  382. and that contempt,

  383. that disdain

  384. that calls other people

  385. nothings and nobodies,

  386. that little acorn

  387. can very easily

  388. grow into an oak tree

  389. of murder.

  390. And so he's calling us

  391. to look inside our hearts.

  392. I was reminded this week

  393. of C.S. Lewis.

  394. He wrote a great book

  395. called Mere Christianity

  396. and if you've not read it,

  397. I encourage you to read it.

  398. He's an Oxford professor

  399. and he said this.

  400. He said,

  401. though I've had to speak

  402. at some length

  403. about sex,

  404. I want to make it

  405. as clear as I possibly can

  406. that the center

  407. of Christian morality

  408. is not here.

  409. The sins of the flesh

  410. are bad

  411. but they are the least bad

  412. of all sins.

  413. All the worst pleasures

  414. are purely spiritual.

  415. The pleasure of putting

  416. other people in the wrong,

  417. of bossing

  418. and patronizing

  419. and spoiling sport

  420. and backbiting,

  421. the pleasures of power,

  422. of hatred.

  423. For there are two things

  424. inside me

  425. competing with the human self

  426. which I must try to become.

  427. They are the animal self

  428. and the diabolical self.

  429. And the diabolical self

  430. is the worst of the two.

  431. That is why a cold,

  432. self-righteous prig

  433. who regularly goes to church

  434. may be far nearer to hell

  435. than a prostitute.

  436. But of course,

  437. it is better to be neither.

  438. A cold, self-righteous prig

  439. who regularly goes to church

  440. may be far nearer to hell

  441. than a prostitute.

  442. This is what Jesus is saying

  443. in Luke chapter 15

    Luke 15 chapter mention

  444. when he tells that great story

  445. about the father

  446. and his two sons.

  447. Right?

  448. And there's that elder brother

  449. who's kind of the religious

  450. and the moral one

  451. and he condemns

  452. his younger brother

  453. who's the irreligious

  454. and the immoral one.

  455. And yet Jesus says

  456. both of these sons

  457. are equally alienated

  458. from their father.

  459. The father needs to go out

  460. to both of these sons

  461. and invite them

  462. into his feast.

  463. And what happens?

  464. Jesus says

  465. the bad, irreligious,

  466. immoral son

  467. enters in

  468. and the good,

  469. religious,

  470. or the good,

  471. religious,

  472. immoral son

  473. does not.

  474. The son of moral rectitude

  475. stays outside

  476. and the rebel

  477. goes inside.

  478. And that's what Paul

  479. is talking to here.

  480. He's talking to elder brothers

  481. who condemn

  482. their younger brothers.

  483. And he says in verse 1

  484. you therefore have no excuse

  485. you who pass judgment

  486. on someone else

  487. for at whatever point

  488. you judge another

  489. you are condemning yourself.

  490. I was thinking this week too

  491. about Alexander Solzhenitsyn.

  492. He was a Russian novelist

  493. and historian

  494. and he wrote

  495. The Gulag Archipelago

  496. and he said this.

  497. You may have heard this.

  498. He says the line

  499. separating good and evil

  500. passes not through states

  501. nor between classes

  502. nor between political parties either

  503. but right through

  504. every human heart

  505. and through all human hearts.

  506. If only there were

  507. evil people

  508. somewhere insidiously

  509. committing evil deeds

  510. and it were necessary

  511. only to separate them

  512. from the rest of us

  513. and destroy them.

  514. But the line

  515. dividing good and evil

  516. cuts through the heart

  517. of every human being

  518. and who is willing

  519. to destroy a piece

  520. of his own heart.

  521. See Solzhenitsyn

  522. and Lewis

  523. and the Apostle Paul

  524. and the Lord Jesus Christ

  525. they're all saying

  526. the same thing

  527. that the religious people

  528. and the irreligious people

  529. the moral people

  530. and the immoral people

  531. were all in the same boat.

  532. And God's judgment

  533. is universal

  534. for all of us.

  535. And some people

  536. would object to that

  537. and say well wait a minute

  538. if God's good

  539. and if God is a God of love

  540. how can he judge us?

  541. How can he judge me?

  542. And that's what Paul

  543. is getting at in verse 4

  544. where he says

  545. do you show contempt

  546. for the riches

  547. of his kindness

  548. forbearance and patience

  549. not realizing

  550. that God's kindness

  551. is intended to lead you

  552. to repentance.

  553. You know some people

  554. will do that

  555. will appeal to

  556. the riches

  557. of the kindness of God.

  558. this great treasury

  559. of the endless

  560. inexhaustible wealth

  561. of God's tolerance

  562. and his long suffering

  563. all of his goodness

  564. and say God is love

  565. and therefore

  566. he cannot judge me.

  567. And Paul would say

  568. yes it's true

  569. that the kindness

  570. and the forbearance

  571. and the patience of God

  572. are the reason

  573. that the world

  574. even still exists today.

  575. But to use

  576. the kindness of God

  577. as an appeal

  578. to excuse my sin

  579. or to escape

  580. his judgment

  581. Paul says

  582. that's to hold

  583. the kindness of God

  584. in contempt.

  585. That's to despise

  586. the goodness of God

  587. to regard all the attributes

  588. of God

  589. as quite cheap.

  590. And he says

  591. yes God is kind

  592. but his kindness

  593. will not cancel out

  594. his judgment

  595. because he's also

  596. a God

  597. of righteousness

  598. and justice.

  599. So God's judgment

  600. is universal.

  601. You tracking with me?

  602. This is a hard passage.

  603. Okay?

  604. I'm trying my hardest

  605. up here.

  606. God's judgment

  607. is universal.

  608. Works righteousness

  609. is inconceivable.

  610. And I gotta

  611. work even harder now

  612. because Romans 2

  613. particularly verses 7

  614. through 10

  615. seems to say

  616. that it's possible

  617. to be righteous

  618. by the works

  619. that we do.

  620. And it's possible

  621. to be saved

  622. by the righteous actions

  623. that we produce

  624. and achieve.

  625. If you just look

  626. at verse 7

  627. it says

  628. seek glory

  629. do good

  630. and you'll be rewarded

  631. with eternal life.

  632. And verse 8 says

  633. seek yourself

  634. do evil

  635. you'll be rewarded

  636. with eternal wrath.

  637. Verse 9 says

  638. do evil

  639. and the result

  640. will be unending

  641. trouble and distress.

  642. Verse 10 says

  643. do good

  644. and the result

  645. will be glory

  646. honor and peace

  647. forever.

  648. And then verse 13

  649. says if you obey

  650. the law

  651. God will declare

  652. you righteous.

  653. And it's so easy

  654. to misinterpret this

  655. if you're not careful.

  656. To say okay

  657. I get you

  658. in verses 1 to 4

  659. that I do

  660. the very same things

  661. that other

  662. quote unquote

  663. evil people are doing

  664. but

  665. this seems to say

  666. if I just try

  667. a little harder

  668. and if I just

  669. work a little bit

  670. I can maybe

  671. balance the scales

  672. I can tip

  673. the scales

  674. and if I just

  675. seek God

  676. a little bit more

  677. than I seek myself

  678. and if I just do

  679. a little bit more good

  680. so that my good

  681. outweighs my bad

  682. and if I just try

  683. to obey the law

  684. of God

  685. maybe then I can

  686. cancel out

  687. this judgment of God.

  688. And that

  689. I understand

  690. how you might get there

  691. but that would

  692. completely contradict

  693. Paul's entire letter.

  694. So let me

  695. explain.

  696. Paul says

  697. on judgment day

  698. there's going to be

  699. two groups of people

  700. the righteous

  701. and the unrighteous.

  702. And he says

  703. in verse 6

  704. that God is going

  705. to repay

  706. every person

  707. according to

  708. what they have done.

  709. And so you're

  710. going to be able

  711. to tell the righteous

  712. and the unrighteous

  713. apart

  714. by their general

  715. attitude toward God

  716. their tenor of life

  717. their actual conduct

  718. and behavior

  719. and this is what

  720. Paul describes

  721. in verse 7

  722. he says

  723. the righteous

  724. to those who

  725. by persistence

  726. in doing good

  727. seek glory

  728. honor

  729. and immortality

  730. he will give

  731. eternal life.

  732. Right?

  733. The righteous person

  734. seeks God.

  735. the righteous person

  736. desires to be

  737. with God

  738. the righteous person

  739. wants to behold

  740. these glorious

  741. attributes

  742. of God

  743. to spend eternity

  744. in the presence

  745. of God

  746. adoring

  747. the majesty

  748. of God.

  749. The righteous person

  750. seeks

  751. from God

  752. honor

  753. he seeks God

  754. to confer

  755. honor and blessing

  756. and dignity

  757. upon him

  758. the righteous person

  759. seeks immortality

  760. the state of

  761. incorruptibility

  762. glory

  763. they want

  764. to be pure

  765. and holy

  766. and to be above

  767. and beyond sin

  768. and eternally perfect

  769. in the presence

  770. of God

  771. that's the righteous

  772. person's attitude

  773. toward God

  774. and what then

  775. is the righteous

  776. person's tenor

  777. of life?

  778. Paul says

  779. they persist

  780. in doing good

  781. they patiently

  782. persevere

  783. in reading their

  784. Bible

  785. and praying

  786. and wanting to know

  787. the will of God

  788. and walk with God

  789. and fight the good

  790. fight of the faith

  791. that's their attitude

  792. toward God

  793. that's their tenor

  794. of life

  795. and what about

  796. their actual conduct

  797. and behavior?

  798. Paul says

  799. they persist

  800. in doing good

  801. they work good

  802. they keep

  803. all the commandments

  804. of God

  805. they love God

  806. with all their heart

  807. soul

  808. mind and strength

  809. and they love

  810. their neighbor

  811. as they love

  812. themselves

  813. that's the righteous

  814. and Paul then

  815. goes on

  816. in verse 8

  817. and he describes

  818. the unrighteous

  819. as the exact

  820. opposite of this

  821. an unrighteous person

  822. does not seek God

  823. and his glory

  824. but they rather

  825. seek themselves

  826. the unrighteous person

  827. does not seek

  828. the honor

  829. that comes from God

  830. they in fact

  831. turn away

  832. from the truth

  833. of God

  834. and he says

  835. the unrighteous person

  836. doesn't seek

  837. immortality

  838. and purity

  839. in God

  840. they rather

  841. follow evil

  842. instead

  843. and so Paul

  844. is putting this

  845. question before us

  846. he says

  847. which group

  848. or which camp

  849. are you going to be

  850. in on judgment day?

  851. if you think

  852. you're going to be

  853. in the righteous group

  854. that means

  855. that you trust

  856. that your life

  857. and everything

  858. that you've done

  859. and do

  860. and will do

  861. is able to meet

  862. God's very very

  863. high standards

  864. but Paul's argument

  865. from

  866. Romans 1 18

  867. and onward

  868. says that

  869. all of us

  870. are godless

  871. and wicked

  872. all of us

  873. are ungodly

  874. and unrighteous

  875. there is

  876. no one

  877. righteous

  878. it doesn't

  879. matter how

  880. much you

  881. go to church

  882. it doesn't

  883. matter how

  884. much

  885. you pray

  886. yes

  887. if

  888. the gospel

  889. of God

  890. enters in

  891. and the grace

  892. of God

  893. comes and

  894. justifies you

  895. and declares

  896. you righteous

  897. and new life

  898. comes into you

  899. through Jesus

  900. Christ

  901. and the power

  902. of the Holy

  903. Spirit

  904. comes over you

  905. you will begin

  906. to experience

  907. the Christian life

  908. which is being

  909. described in

  910. verse 7

  911. and this attitude

  912. toward God

  913. and your tenor

  914. of life

  915. and your actual

  916. conduct

  917. will begin

  918. to look like

  919. verse 7

  920. but unless

  921. and until

  922. God gives us

  923. his own

  924. righteousness

  925. all of us

  926. Paul says

  927. are going to

  928. enter into

  929. judgment day

  930. in a state

  931. of unrighteousness

  932. now why is that

  933. why is that

  934. it's because

  935. the control

  936. center of our

  937. lives

  938. are completely

  939. jacked up

  940. he says

  941. in verse 5

  942. but because

  943. of your

  944. stubbornness

  945. and your

  946. unrepentant

  947. heart

  948. literally the

  949. word there

  950. for stubbornness

  951. in the Greek

  952. is because

  953. of your

  954. sclerosis

  955. because you

  956. have a

  957. sclerotic

  958. and a

  959. hard

  960. heart

  961. modern people

  962. say that

  963. we're really

  964. alright in

  965. our heart

  966. it's just

  967. that we

  968. go wrong

  969. from time

  970. to time

  971. here and

  972. there on

  973. the surface

  974. of things

  975. but Paul

  976. is saying

  977. the exact

  978. opposite

  979. he says

  980. we're wrong

  981. in our

  982. heart

  983. and our

  984. lives only

  985. go right

  986. in patches

  987. on the

  988. surface

  989. and what

  990. he's saying

  991. is that

  992. the kindness

  993. of God

  994. our experience

  995. of the

  996. forbearance

  997. of God

  998. and the

  999. patience

  1000. of God

  1001. these

  1002. experiences

  1003. in our

  1004. lives

  1005. are meant

  1006. to soften

  1007. our hearts

  1008. and melt

  1009. our hearts

  1010. and cause

  1011. us to have

  1012. repentant

  1013. hearts

  1014. but what

  1015. actually happens

  1016. in our

  1017. lives

  1018. is that

  1019. we hold

  1020. the kindness

  1021. and the

  1022. goodness

  1023. of God

  1024. and contempt

  1025. with hard

  1026. and impenitent

  1027. hearts

  1028. and so he

  1029. says

  1030. because of

  1031. your stubbornness

  1032. and your

  1033. unrepentant

  1034. heart

  1035. you are

  1036. storing up

  1037. wrath

  1038. against yourself

  1039. for the

  1040. day of

  1041. God's

  1042. wrath

  1043. when his

  1044. righteous

  1045. judgment

  1046. will be

  1047. revealed

  1048. we're meant

  1049. to store up

  1050. as treasure

  1051. the kindness

  1052. of God

  1053. the riches

  1054. of God

  1055. the forbearance

  1056. of God

  1057. the patience

  1058. of God

  1059. but what

  1060. do we do

  1061. instead

  1062. we store up

  1063. wrath

  1064. against

  1065. ourselves

  1066. and this

  1067. is truly

  1068. alarming

  1069. to me

  1070. because it

  1071. says that

  1072. it's not

  1073. God

  1074. storing up

  1075. wrath

  1076. against us

  1077. it's we

  1078. ourselves

  1079. who are

  1080. storing up

  1081. wrath

  1082. against

  1083. ourselves

  1084. and he

  1085. says this

  1086. day is

  1087. going to

  1088. come when

  1089. all of

  1090. this wrath

  1091. that we've

  1092. been storing

  1093. up against

  1094. ourselves

  1095. is going

  1096. to be

  1097. produced

  1098. in evidence

  1099. against

  1100. us

  1101. and what

  1102. in the

  1103. world does

  1104. that mean

  1105. well

  1106. imagine

  1107. an invisible

  1108. recorder

  1109. and imagine

  1110. from the time

  1111. you're a baby

  1112. this invisible

  1113. recorder has

  1114. been hung

  1115. around your

  1116. neck

  1117. and you

  1118. get to

  1119. judgment day

  1120. and you

  1121. appear before

  1122. God

  1123. and you

  1124. don't even

  1125. know this

  1126. recorder

  1127. ever even

  1128. existed

  1129. and you're

  1130. tempted to

  1131. say to

  1132. God

  1133. hey God

  1134. you can't

  1135. hold me

  1136. responsible

  1137. for all

  1138. the stuff

  1139. I didn't

  1140. know

  1141. and you

  1142. can't judge

  1143. me

  1144. for something

  1145. that I

  1146. never really

  1147. believed

  1148. in

  1149. and God

  1150. will say

  1151. okay well

  1152. let's play

  1153. back this

  1154. recorder

  1155. and he'll

  1156. play it

  1157. back for

  1158. you

  1159. as the

  1160. fairest

  1161. judge

  1162. you could

  1163. possibly

  1164. imagine

  1165. right

  1166. verse 2

  1167. says that

  1168. we know

  1169. that God's

  1170. judgment

  1171. is based

  1172. on truth

  1173. he's not

  1174. going to

  1175. judge people

  1176. according to

  1177. the Bible

  1178. they didn't

  1179. know

  1180. he's not

  1181. going to

  1182. judge people

  1183. according to

  1184. the Christ

  1185. they didn't

  1186. know

  1187. he's just

  1188. going to

  1189. judge us

  1190. by our

  1191. own words

  1192. and he's

  1193. going to

  1194. play back

  1195. this recording

  1196. of whenever

  1197. you bound

  1198. other people

  1199. by

  1200. your own

  1201. moral judgments

  1202. whenever

  1203. you said

  1204. to someone

  1205. else

  1206. you should

  1207. do this

  1208. or you

  1209. ought to

  1210. do

  1211. that

  1212. or

  1213. whenever

  1214. those

  1215. thoughts

  1216. ran

  1217. through

  1218. your

  1219. mind

  1220. and

  1221. God's

  1222. just

  1223. going to

  1224. play

  1225. that

  1226. back

  1227. for us

  1228. isn't

  1229. that

  1230. going to

  1231. be

  1232. fun

  1233. for some

  1234. of us

  1235. that recorder

  1236. is going

  1237. to be

  1238. playing

  1239. back

  1240. for years

  1241. and years

  1242. on end

  1243. thousands

  1244. and thousands

  1245. and thousands

  1246. of moral

  1247. judgments

  1248. that we

  1249. made

  1250. against

  1251. other

  1252. people

  1253. and God's

  1254. going

  1255. to say

  1256. okay

  1257. your standards

  1258. for other

  1259. people

  1260. are going

  1261. to be

  1262. the standard

  1263. by which

  1264. you're

  1265. you are

  1266. storing up

  1267. wrath

  1268. against

  1269. yourselves

  1270. for the

  1271. day

  1272. of God's

  1273. wrath

  1274. if God

  1275. judges

  1276. us

  1277. by our

  1278. own

  1279. standards

  1280. no one's

  1281. going to

  1282. think that's

  1283. unfair

  1284. and he

  1285. says that

  1286. when God

  1287. judges us

  1288. on judgment

  1289. day

  1290. none of us

  1291. are going

  1292. to stand

  1293. all of us

  1294. are going

  1295. to be judged

  1296. and found

  1297. wanting

  1298. even according

  1299. to our

  1300. own words

  1301. and our

  1302. own standards

  1303. much less

  1304. God's words

  1305. and God's

  1306. standards

  1307. all of us

  1308. are going

  1309. to stand

  1310. there

  1311. just

  1312. hopeless

  1313. and helpless

  1314. and utterly

  1315. condemned

  1316. even the

  1317. works

  1318. righteousness

  1319. that we

  1320. thought

  1321. we could

  1322. achieve

  1323. on that

  1324. day

  1325. is going

  1326. to all

  1327. the best

  1328. stuff

  1329. that we

  1330. produced

  1331. all of

  1332. our

  1333. goodness

  1334. all of

  1335. our

  1336. righteousness

  1337. even

  1338. according

  1339. to our

  1340. own

  1341. standards

  1342. is going

  1343. to appear

  1344. as

  1345. filthy

  1346. rags

  1347. isn't

  1348. this

  1349. great

  1350. God's

  1351. judgment

  1352. is universal

  1353. works

  1354. righteousness

  1355. is inconceivable

  1356. but here

  1357. comes the

  1358. good news

  1359. gospel

  1360. repentance

  1361. is possible

  1362. and gospel

  1363. repentance

  1364. is essential

  1365. right

  1366. verse 16

  1367. says that

  1368. this is all

  1369. going to take

  1370. place on the

  1371. day when God

  1372. judges everyone's

  1373. secrets through

  1374. Jesus Christ

  1375. as my gospel

  1376. declares

  1377. all of

  1378. our secrets

  1379. all the

  1380. hidden areas

  1381. of our

  1382. lives

  1383. all of

  1384. my

  1385. motives

  1386. all my

  1387. thoughts

  1388. all the

  1389. facts are

  1390. going to be

  1391. known

  1392. everything I

  1393. thought

  1394. everything I

  1395. said

  1396. everything I

  1397. did

  1398. everything I

  1399. ought to

  1400. have done

  1401. but yet

  1402. left undone

  1403. do you see

  1404. why Paul

  1405. is so

  1406. anxious for

  1407. us to

  1408. realize

  1409. right now

  1410. that we're

  1411. under the

  1412. wrath of

  1413. God

  1414. because he

  1415. wants us to

  1416. hide ourselves

  1417. right now

  1418. under the

  1419. righteousness

  1420. that God

  1421. has provided

  1422. and that's

  1423. the thesis

  1424. of this

  1425. whole letter

  1426. that I'm

  1427. not ashamed

  1428. of the

  1429. gospel

  1430. because it

  1431. is the

  1432. power of

  1433. God that

  1434. brings

  1435. salvation

  1436. to everyone

  1437. who believes

  1438. it

  1439. first for the

  1440. Jew then

  1441. for the

  1442. Gentile

  1443. for in

  1444. the gospel

  1445. the righteousness

  1446. of God

  1447. has been

  1448. revealed

  1449. the righteousness

  1450. that comes

  1451. by faith

  1452. and is

  1453. by faith

  1454. from first

  1455. to last

  1456. as it is

  1457. written the

  1458. righteous will

  1459. live

  1460. by faith

  1461. brothers and

  1462. sisters

  1463. the bad

  1464. news is

  1465. that

  1466. God's

  1467. judgment

  1468. is universal

  1469. and works

  1470. righteousness

  1471. is inconceivable

  1472. and impossible

  1473. but the

  1474. good news

  1475. is that

  1476. God has

  1477. provided a

  1478. righteousness

  1479. for us

  1480. in the

  1481. life and

  1482. death

  1483. of his

  1484. son

  1485. Jesus

  1486. Christ

  1487. it's not

  1488. a righteousness

  1489. that we

  1490. need to

  1491. go and

  1492. work out

  1493. it's a

  1494. righteousness

  1495. that has

  1496. already been

  1497. worked out

  1498. for us

  1499. by God

  1500. God

  1501. the gospel

  1502. says that

  1503. yes

  1504. this

  1505. resurrected

  1506. Jesus

  1507. who conquered

  1508. death

  1509. is going

  1510. to be

  1511. your judge

  1512. on the

  1513. last day

  1514. but it's

  1515. possible

  1516. to get

  1517. there

  1518. and to

  1519. look into

  1520. your judge's

  1521. face

  1522. and to

  1523. see

  1524. your savior

  1525. there

  1526. to appear

  1527. before him

  1528. and say

  1529. I'm already

  1530. in the

  1531. right

  1532. God has

  1533. already

  1534. declared

  1535. me to

  1536. be

  1537. righteous

  1538. he's

  1539. already

  1540. given

  1541. to me

  1542. and imputed

  1543. upon me

  1544. the righteousness

  1545. of Christ

  1546. himself

  1547. isn't that

  1548. good news

  1549. but what

  1550. must we do

  1551. to respond

  1552. to this

  1553. good news

  1554. Paul says

  1555. it's the

  1556. kindness

  1557. of God

  1558. that's meant

  1559. to lead us

  1560. to repentance

  1561. God's

  1562. kindness

  1563. is intended

  1564. to lead us

  1565. to

  1566. repentance

  1567. and repentance

  1568. is that

  1569. key word

  1570. it's that

  1571. crucial

  1572. word

  1573. what does

  1574. it mean

  1575. to repent

  1576. well I'll

  1577. end with

  1578. a story

  1579. from

  1580. Jesus

  1581. in Luke

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  1582. chapter 18

  1583. he talks

  1584. about a

  1585. Pharisee

  1586. and a

  1587. tax collector

  1588. somebody

  1589. who's very

  1590. religious

  1591. and moral

  1592. and somebody

  1593. who's very

  1594. irreligious

  1595. and immoral

  1596. and he says

  1597. that the

  1598. Pharisee

  1599. goes

  1600. and he

  1601. prays

  1602. to God

  1603. and he

  1604. says

  1605. God

  1606. I thank

  1607. you

  1608. that I'm

  1609. not like

  1610. all these

  1611. other people

  1612. because

  1613. they do

  1614. evil

  1615. but I

  1616. pray

  1617. I fast

  1618. I give

  1619. all my

  1620. money

  1621. and he

  1622. thinks

  1623. he's

  1624. completely

  1625. satisfied

  1626. the demands

  1627. of God

  1628. full

  1629. of self

  1630. satisfaction

  1631. and self

  1632. confidence

  1633. he doesn't

  1634. even ask

  1635. God

  1636. for any

  1637. help

  1638. he doesn't

  1639. ask God

  1640. for anything

  1641. he just

  1642. is there

  1643. telling God

  1644. how he is

  1645. everything

  1646. he needs

  1647. to be

  1648. and he's

  1649. done

  1650. everything

  1651. he needs

  1652. to do

  1653. and that

  1654. really isn't

  1655. even praying

  1656. Jesus says

  1657. it's just

  1658. kind of

  1659. talking to

  1660. yourself

  1661. he says

  1662. that kind

  1663. of prayer

  1664. doesn't get

  1665. through

  1666. but what

  1667. kind of

  1668. prayer

  1669. does get

  1670. through

  1671. this tax

  1672. collector

  1673. comes

  1674. and he

  1675. knows

  1676. all about

  1677. the kindness

  1678. of God

  1679. and the

  1680. forbearance

  1681. of God

  1682. and the

  1683. patience

  1684. of God

  1685. and yet

  1686. even still

  1687. he knows

  1688. he's not

  1689. worthy of

  1690. God

  1691. he knows

  1692. his whole

  1693. life has

  1694. been utterly

  1695. corrupted by

  1696. sin

  1697. and so

  1698. he stands

  1699. far off

  1700. and he

  1701. doesn't even

  1702. look up to

  1703. heaven

  1704. he just

  1705. beats

  1706. his breast

  1707. he beats

  1708. his heart

  1709. and how

  1710. does he

  1711. pray

  1712. he says

  1713. God

  1714. have mercy

  1715. on me

  1716. a sinner

  1717. can we

  1718. say that

  1719. together

  1720. God

  1721. have mercy

  1722. on me

  1723. a sinner

  1724. in the

  1725. Greek

  1726. he says

  1727. God

  1728. have mercy

  1729. on me

  1730. the sinner

  1731. which means

  1732. he's blocked

  1733. everybody else

  1734. in the world

  1735. out

  1736. he's not

  1737. focused on

  1738. them and

  1739. their sin

  1740. he just

  1741. says

  1742. God

  1743. have mercy

  1744. on me

  1745. the

  1746. sinner

  1747. and that's

  1748. the prayer

  1749. that gets

  1750. through

  1751. because that's

  1752. the prayer

  1753. of repentance

  1754. God's

  1755. kindness

  1756. is meant

  1757. to lead

  1758. us

  1759. into

  1760. repentance

  1761. and having

  1762. repented

  1763. having

  1764. rejected

  1765. all of

  1766. our own

  1767. self-righteousness

  1768. and embraced

  1769. this righteousness

  1770. of God

  1771. that he's

  1772. provided for

  1773. us in

  1774. Jesus

  1775. Christ

  1776. now we

  1777. can begin

  1778. to live

  1779. this new

  1780. life

  1781. now we

  1782. can start

  1783. to lean

  1784. in to

  1785. what

  1786. verse 7

  1787. is all

  1788. about

  1789. to those

  1790. who by

  1791. persistence

  1792. in doing

  1793. good

  1794. seek glory

  1795. honor

  1796. and immortality

  1797. he will

  1798. give

  1799. eternal

  1800. life

  1801. those are

  1802. not the

  1803. works that

  1804. save you

  1805. but they

  1806. are the

  1807. necessary

  1808. outcome

  1809. and evidence

  1810. of a

  1811. saving

  1812. faith

  1813. so friends

  1814. God's

  1815. kindness

  1816. is meant

  1817. to lead

  1818. us to

  1819. repentance

  1820. and we

  1821. have

  1822. every

  1823. opportunity

  1824. today

  1825. to

  1826. repent

  1827. and to

  1828. believe

  1829. this

  1830. glorious

  1831. gospel

  1832. of the

  1833. righteousness

  1834. of God

  1835. in the name

  1836. of the

  1837. Father

  1838. Son

  1839. and Holy

  1840. Spirit

  1841. Amen

  1842. Amen

  1843. Amen

  1844. .

  1845. Amen
