  5. Today's scripture reading is from Paul's letter to the Romans, chapter 8, verses 9 through 17, as printed in the liturgy.

    Romans 8:9–17

  6. You, however, are not in the realm of the flesh, but are in the realm of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.

  7. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

  8. But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin,

  9. the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.

  10. And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you,

  11. he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies

  12. because of his Spirit who lives in you.

  13. Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation,

  14. but it's not to the flesh to live according to it.

  15. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die.

  16. But if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live.

  17. For those who are fed by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

  18. The Spirit you received does not make slaves so that you live in fear again.

  19. Rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.

  20. And by him we cry, Abba, Father.

  21. The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.

  22. Now, if we are children, then we are heirs.

  23. Heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ.

  24. If indeed we share in his sufferings, in order that we may also share in his glory.

  25. This is the word of the Lord.

  26. Thanks be to God.

  27. Good morning, Christ Church.

  28. Thanks to the few of you who encouraged me to take my jacket off this Sunday.

  29. I appreciate your compassion and permission to do that.

  30. We are continuing today just preaching through the Apostle Paul's great epistle to the church in Rome.

  31. And I just want to begin asking this question.

  32. Like, why is it important for us to know the Apostle Paul and to know his writings?

  33. And I want to start with a quote from a British historian.

  34. His name is Tom Holland.

  35. He's got a great podcast called The Rest is History.

  36. Oxford and sort of Cambridge-trained historian.

  37. He says this.

  38. Paul's letters are like a collection of acorns from which mighty oaks have grown.

  39. They are the most influential pieces of writing to have survived from antiquity.

  40. And their influence on Christian history and the present-day character and assumptions of the West are incalculable.

  41. Not just our earliest sources for Christianity, they are also the most influential.

  42. If the European philosophical tradition can be characterized as a series of footnotes to Plato,

  43. then even more so can Christian theology be characterized as a series of footnotes to Paul.

  44. Yet that does not mean he should be regarded as the founder of Christianity.

  45. Without Jesus, we would never have heard of Paul.

  46. The figure of Christ stands at the heart of Paul's letters just as he stands at the heart of the later Gospels.

  47. That is why Christianity, although it may be Pauline, is not named after Paul.

  48. And Holland goes on elsewhere and he says,

  49. I think of Paul as a kind of depth charge deep beneath the foundations of the classical world.

  50. He sets up ripple effects of revolution throughout Western history.

  51. And I think this is interesting because even if you're here and you don't agree with all the things that the Apostle Paul is saying,

  52. Holland would say that, you know, you can't even understand the present character and assumptions of Western culture.

  53. You can't appreciate the various ripple effects of revolution that have happened through Western history without Paul.

  54. So just on an intellectual level, looking at what Paul has to say is just a matter of historical and cultural literacy.

  55. But of course, what we're doing today goes way beyond the intellectual level because we're talking about matters of both the head and the heart.

  56. And we saw this great theme in Romans 8 last week is about the comfort and the security that a Christian believer has with an assurance of their salvation.

  57. The absolute certainty of the absolute certainty of the final perseverance of all who are truly justified in Jesus Christ by faith.

  58. That's what Romans 8 is all about.

  59. And I want to encourage you, as I did last week, to put this chapter of the Bible, or at least parts of it, into your memory bank to meditate upon.

  60. Everything we read about in Romans 8 is made possible and is put into effect by the ministry of the Holy Spirit.

  61. God the Father planned our salvation.

  62. God the Son carried it out.

  63. But God the Holy Spirit is the one who applies that salvation to us.

  64. And this is why the Holy Spirit is mentioned in this chapter 21 times.

  65. It tells us that the Christian life is essentially life in the Spirit.

  66. Life animated, empowered, sustained, directed, and enriched by the Holy Spirit.

  67. Without the Holy Spirit.

  68. True Christian discipleship would be inconceivable and impossible.

  69. And in fact, the hallmark of any authentic believer, the hallmark of any true Christian and real disciple of Jesus is are you filled with the Holy Spirit?

  70. Are you indwelled by the Holy Spirit?

  71. Are you being led by the Holy Spirit?

  72. And what we want to look at today is the way that the Holy Spirit applies God's salvation to us.

  73. And particularly the way he gives us these three gifts.

  74. We're going to limit ourselves to just three.

  75. But he gives us three gifts.

  76. And what he says, particularly in verses 14 to 17, is that God's Spirit gives you a stable identity, a vital relationship, and a future hope.

  77. God's Spirit gives you a stable identity, a vital relationship, and a future hope.

  78. As Andrew said, this is a special sermon where we're installing Andrew Ong as our associate pastor and ordaining and installing Jesus Arseneaga as our ruling elder.

  79. So this is a particular word to you two guys today as shepherds of God's flock.

  80. But really to all of the leaders of God's church is that it's our task to serve the people of God by helping them discover and treasure and nurture these three gifts from the Spirit.

  81. A stable identity, a vital relationship, and a future hope.

  82. So let's start with this first one.

  83. God's Spirit gives you a stable identity.

  84. Last week I said that our culture highlights freedom as the main theme and value of our society.

  85. Freedom is seen as the highest good.

  86. But it may be more accurate to say that there are two interdependent cultural narratives.

  87. First of all, there's freedom, which is that no one has the right to tell me how to live my life unless I hamper the freedom of others.

  88. But in addition to freedom, there's identity.

  89. Identity says I ought to be true to myself and express my deepest desires and dreams no matter what others say.

  90. And these are the two narratives of our culture, freedom and identity.

  91. I have one slide.

  92. I don't know if we can bring it up.

  93. But it's from a psychologist at San Diego State who talks about the ways, looks at all the different books that have been written in the last many years.

  94. And the way that this word identity has skyrocketed in our imaginations.

  95. We're kind of obsessed about identity.

  96. And what is identity?

  97. Identity consists of two things.

  98. First of all, an identity is about a sense of self that's durable.

  99. Right?

  100. We live in many different spheres at once.

  101. We live with our family at home and we're a colleague at work and we're with our friends and we're alone in solitude.

  102. But an identity is that sustained sense of self that's true of you in all spheres no matter where you go and what you're doing.

  103. And the second thing is that identity is not only about a sense of self, but it's also about a sense of worth.

  104. A sense of dignity and honor.

  105. And we don't have time this morning to talk about and to examine the dynamics of identity formation.

  106. But I would argue that modern identities are inherently unstable.

  107. Modern identities are inherently insecure because they're based on one of two things.

  108. They're either based on what my society or my group says about me or they're based on what I think about myself.

  109. And I want to challenge that approach to identity this morning and say, what if identity is about more than that?

  110. What if identity is not about what society and my group says about me or about what I think about myself?

  111. But what if identity is about what God says about me and what God thinks about me?

  112. And the gospel tells us that we can have a stable and secure identity that cannot be shaken.

  113. And this is what Paul says in verse 14.

  114. He says that those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

  115. Now the negative truth of that, first of all, is that not all people are the children of God.

  116. Those who are led by the Spirit of God, they and they alone are the sons and the daughters of God.

  117. And there's some circles that will talk about, you know, the universal fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man.

  118. There are people who will take that further and talk about universal salvation, that in the end, everyone is going to be saved.

  119. But the teaching of Jesus, the teaching of the Bible says otherwise.

  120. Jesus himself divides humanity into two groups and to use his language, he talks about the saved and the lost.

  121. He talks about those who are perishing and those who are alive.

  122. And that's a hard truth.

  123. That's why Jesus got rejected.

  124. But Paul is bringing that up here for us again in verse 9.

  125. He says,

  126. You, however, are not controlled by the sinful nature but are in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God lives in you.

  127. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ.

  128. So Paul is saying,

  129. Not all people have the Spirit of God, therefore they don't all belong to Christ.

  130. Therefore, they don't all have God as their father.

  131. They're not children of the Father.

  132. And Paul has been making this case since Romans 5 that none of us by nature are a child of God.

  133. We are rather the children of Adam.

  134. That's our parentage.

  135. That's where we belong by nature.

  136. And the Scriptures tell us that on the other hand, Jesus is the only begotten Son of God.

  137. And so he stands alone and unique in this category over here.

  138. And this poses a great question for us.

  139. How then does anyone become a son or a daughter of God?

  140. And Paul tells us, he says,

  141. Adoption is this great word.

  142. It's an act of God in which by grace he deliberately chooses us and takes us in so that we belong to him.

  143. And with adoption we come to bear the family name.

  144. And we come to eat at the family table and we work in the family business and we share in the family inheritance.

  145. To be someone who's adopted is to be given an exalted position with immense privileges as sons and daughters.

  146. Now to come and to share the status and all the benefits of God's only begotten Son, Jesus.

  147. If you're adopted, that means that you are as secure in the Father's love as Jesus is secure in the Father's love.

  148. Paul is saying that if we're in Jesus Christ and if we're led by the Holy Spirit,

  149. then your true identity, your enduring sense of self in all spheres of life,

  150. that identity that gives you a sense of worth and dignity is that you are the sons and the daughters of God.

  151. And your identity is defined not by yourself, not by your group, but by someone beyond you and someone much greater than you.

  152. And this is vastly different than modern approaches to identity formation because on the one hand,

  153. in modern life you look inside yourself to discover your deepest desires and dreams and to express them.

  154. And then you'll know who you truly are.

  155. Or on the other hand, you essentialize your gender, your race, your class, your age, your sexuality,

  156. and you say, this is who I am, and you define yourself either by what you're not or by who's against you.

  157. And the reason both of these approaches to identity are so unstable is that they do not start high enough and they do not go deep enough.

  158. We need someone from outside of ourselves on the one hand and someone outside of our group and our society on the other hand

  159. to instill in us a sense of self and a sense of worth and to try to rely on our own self-affirmations

  160. or to try to rely on the affirmations and the agendas of our group or our society is inherently unstable because that's constantly changing.

  161. But the gospel says that someone from outside of ourselves, someone from outside of our group,

  162. has conferred upon us a sense of self and a sense of worth that can never change and that can never be taken away.

  163. If you're exploring Christianity and you're open to the idea that there is a God

  164. and that that God is a good and a trustworthy and a loving God,

  165. that if he made you and if he's the source of your life,

  166. you have to ask the question, is it possible for me to have a stable sense of self and worth apart from that God?

  167. And the offer of the gospel is that you need no longer be a stranger to that God.

  168. You need no longer be even an enemy of that God, but you can become his child.

  169. And the apostle Paul says it like this in Romans chapter 10.

    Romans 10 chapter mention

  170. He says, if you declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and you believe in your heart

  171. that God raised him from the dead, then you can be saved.

  172. You can become a child of God and have this identity that's stable and secure.

  173. And if you're a Christian today, I want to say that you need not look for your identity in here, in yourself.

  174. Nor do you need to go look for your identity over here in your group or in society.

  175. But rather, you already have an identity that comes from up here,

  176. that comes from this spirit of adoption who's brought you in.

  177. You've been deliberately chosen.

  178. You've been proactively taken in.

  179. You belong.

  180. You're a beloved son and daughter.

  181. That is who you fundamentally are.

  182. God loves you as much as he loves his only begotten son, Jesus,

  183. and he can't love anyone more than that.

  184. So your task, if that's true of you,

  185. your task is not to go in search of an identity.

  186. Your task is to spend time on a daily basis cultivating and nurturing this God-given identity

  187. that you already have,

  188. exulting in the status that you have as an adopted, chosen, and beloved child of God.

  189. Thank you so much.

  190. I'm always waiting, you know, just to see.

  191. God's spirit gives you a stable identity,

  192. and you can't get that identity anywhere else.

  193. But God's spirit not only gives you a stable identity,

  194. he also gives you a vital relationship.

  195. He gives you this vital relationship.

  196. He continues that verse.

  197. He says,

  198. The spirit enables you to cry,

  199. Abba, Father.

  200. The spirit enables you to cry,

  201. Abba, Father.

  202. It's within this stable identity as a son or a daughter,

  203. as someone who's an adopted and a beloved child,

  204. that you have the confidence now

  205. of knowing who and whose you are

  206. to actively and regularly cry to God.

  207. Because with this new identity and this new position,

  208. this new status,

  209. you've been given a new voice and a new tongue.

  210. And with that voice and with that tongue,

  211. you cry out to God.

  212. And this is not a generic God or a distant God.

  213. No, he's a very specific God

  214. and a cloud who is very close.

  215. Because what do we say to him?

  216. We say,

  217. Abba, Father.

  218. Abba, Father.

  219. Abba, of course, is the Aramaic

  220. and pater is the Greek.

  221. And Abba is this homely word

  222. used by children

  223. who are talking familiarly with their fathers.

  224. It's like the word papa or daddy

  225. or opa or baba.

  226. That's how Jesus talks to his father.

  227. In the Garden of Gethsemane, for example,

  228. he says,

  229. Abba, Father,

  230. all things are possible for you.

  231. And what the Spirit does

  232. is he comes into our lives

  233. and he enables us to talk to God

  234. like Jesus talks to God.

  235. And what does it mean for us

  236. to cry out,

  237. Abba, Father?

  238. Well, it means that the Holy Spirit

  239. has granted you

  240. an especially close and personal

  241. and loving relationship with God

  242. as your heavenly father.

  243. So that whatever your family of origin,

  244. whoever your parents were,

  245. you now have the father of Jesus Christ

  246. as your father.

  247. And I know some of you

  248. and I know your stories.

  249. You didn't have the father you wanted

  250. or the father you needed.

  251. Some of you weren't provided for

  252. and protected.

  253. Some of you weren't cherished

  254. and treasured.

  255. But look who you've been given now.

  256. And how do we relate to him?

  257. It says that we cry.

  258. We cry,

  259. which suggests vulnerability.

  260. It suggests a safety

  261. and an earnestness

  262. and a deep emotion

  263. and fervency

  264. that we can bring

  265. all of ourselves to him.

  266. And when we cry,

  267. what do we say?

  268. We say,

  269. Abba,

  270. which suggests warmth

  271. and affection

  272. and rejoicing

  273. and happiness

  274. and exuberance.

  275. when my kids were little,

  276. some of you remember that time,

  277. and they would run up to me

  278. and they'd throw themselves at me.

  279. And they would just grab hold of my leg

  280. and just cling on

  281. and they would hang there.

  282. They would just hang.

  283. And if any of you did that today,

  284. that would be strange.

  285. That would be overly familiar.

  286. But these are my children.

  287. I'm their daddy.

  288. That is their rightful place.

  289. Right?

  290. Now, if they came

  291. and tried to do that today,

  292. they'd break my legs.

  293. You know,

  294. they would break my hip.

  295. So now that they're bigger and older,

  296. they still know that

  297. even when I'm in the middle

  298. of something extremely important,

  299. they can walk right in.

  300. They can call me up

  301. and I'm going to interrupt

  302. and I'm going to answer their call.

  303. And they know

  304. that they have access to me.

  305. They know that they can come up

  306. right up next to my side

  307. and grab hold of my hand

  308. and whisper something into my ear

  309. and I'm going to give them

  310. my full attention.

  311. They come to me

  312. with the boldness

  313. of a child

  314. who knows their daddy.

  315. And what the Holy Spirit

  316. gives to you

  317. as a Christian

  318. is he enables you

  319. to talk intimately

  320. and confidently

  321. to God.

  322. And notice that I said

  323. intimately and confidently,

  324. not irreverently

  325. and flippantly.

  326. Right?

  327. Because some people read this

  328. and they start to pray,

  329. hey dad.

  330. I don't know if you've ever heard

  331. someone say,

  332. hey dad.

  333. And if that's you,

  334. I love you,

  335. just stop doing that.

  336. When Jesus prays in the Gospels,

  337. he prays,

  338. holy father,

  339. righteous father.

  340. In the Sermon on the Mount,

  341. he teaches us to pray,

  342. say,

  343. our heavenly father.

  344. Father.

  345. Because this is a transcendent

  346. and an exalted God,

  347. a sovereign and supreme God.

  348. But,

  349. we can cry out to him,

  350. Abba,

  351. Father.

  352. And when we do,

  353. we have immediate

  354. and bold access to him.

  355. Not as fearful,

  356. cowering slaves,

  357. but as cheerful,

  358. confident sons

  359. and daughters.

  360. And what happens

  361. when we do that?

  362. What happens

  363. when we cry out,

  364. Abba,

  365. Father?

  366. Paul says in verse 16

  367. that the spirit

  368. bears witness

  369. with our spirit

  370. that we are the children of God.

  371. When we cry,

  372. Abba,

  373. Father,

  374. and when we take upon our lips

  375. the very words

  376. that Jesus used,

  377. when we come to these

  378. spirit-inspired scriptures

  379. and we say,

  380. Abba,

  381. Father,

  382. show me more of your glory

  383. through your word,

  384. the Holy Spirit shows up

  385. and he begins to bear witness

  386. with our spirit

  387. that we are the children of God.

  388. God.

  389. And I don't know about you,

  390. but sometimes when that happens,

  391. I become so overwhelmed

  392. with a fresh realization

  393. that my Father knows me.

  394. That my Father,

  395. in fact,

  396. knows me more

  397. than I know myself.

  398. He knows the very number

  399. of hairs on my head,

  400. which is getting easier

  401. and easier year by year.

  402. He knows reality

  403. and history

  404. way more than I do.

  405. He knows my past

  406. and my present

  407. and my future.

  408. He has plans for me.

  409. He has great plans for me

  410. that include trials and troubles.

  411. He has plans

  412. that include my pain

  413. and my suffering.

  414. He has plans to correct me

  415. and to discipline me,

  416. but I become overwhelmed

  417. by this realization

  418. with the spirit

  419. bearing witness to my spirit

  420. that I am his child

  421. and he is my Father

  422. and he can even make

  423. the worst things in my life

  424. work out for my good

  425. and for his glory.

  426. And it's just

  427. an amazing experience.

  428. And if you've never had

  429. that experience,

  430. if you don't know

  431. what verse 16

  432. is talking about,

  433. I want to encourage you,

  434. ask for it.

  435. Ask for the spirit

  436. to bear witness

  437. with your spirit

  438. that you are a child of God.

  439. Jesus says in Luke chapter 11,

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  440. he says,

  441. if you,

  442. though you are evil,

  443. know how to give good gifts

  444. to your children,

  445. how much more

  446. will your Father in heaven

  447. give the Holy Spirit

  448. to those who ask him?

  449. I was reading this week

  450. an old Puritan preacher,

  451. probably from about 400 years ago,

  452. and he says this,

  453. he says,

  454. picture a man

  455. who's walking along a road

  456. with his little boy

  457. holding hands,

  458. father and son,

  459. son and father.

  460. And the little boy knows

  461. that this man and his father

  462. and that his father loves him,

  463. but suddenly the father stops

  464. and picks up the boy

  465. and lifts him up into his arms

  466. and embraces him

  467. and kisses him.

  468. And then the father

  469. puts him down again

  470. and they continue walking.

  471. And this man said,

  472. he said,

  473. the boy is no more a son

  474. when he's being embraced

  475. than he was before.

  476. And the father's action

  477. has not changed the relationship,

  478. but oh,

  479. how much greater

  480. is the enjoyment

  481. of that relationship.

  482. It is a wonderful thing

  483. to be walking along

  484. holding your father's hand,

  485. but it's an incomparably

  486. greater thing

  487. to have his arms

  488. enfolded around you.

  489. And that's what Jesus means

  490. when he says,

  491. ask your father

  492. to give you more

  493. of the Holy Spirit.

  494. It's what Paul means

  495. when he says

  496. the Holy Spirit

  497. bears witness

  498. with our spirit

  499. that we are the children

  500. of God.

  501. Just say,

  502. Lord,

  503. I know you love me,

  504. but give me more

  505. of your love.

  506. Of course,

  507. if you do this,

  508. fair warning,

  509. there's ethical

  510. and moral consequences

  511. to crying out,

  512. Abba, Father.

  513. Because along with this

  514. comes a desire

  515. that others would see

  516. in us

  517. a life reminiscent

  518. of the Father himself.

  519. That we would imitate him

  520. and that people would want,

  521. people would be able

  522. to see in us

  523. no consistency

  524. between our conduct

  525. and the Father's character.

  526. And so a spirit-filled,

  527. spirit-led Christian

  528. hears Paul saying,

  529. you need to put to death

  530. the misdeeds of the body.

  531. You need to kill off

  532. all that pride

  533. and you need to mortify

  534. all that self-centeredness.

  535. And you say,

  536. well, of course,

  537. that's what I want to do.

  538. Of course,

  539. that's what I want to do

  540. because I'm so grateful

  541. to be an adopted child.

  542. I'm so grateful

  543. to be a beloved son

  544. and a daughter.

  545. I want absolutely

  546. no dishonor

  547. to come to my Father

  548. on my account.

  549. I just want to

  550. adequately reflect

  551. and express

  552. and represent

  553. his glory

  554. and his excellencies

  555. to all the people

  556. around me.

  557. That's what it means

  558. to cry out

  559. and have this vital relationship

  560. and say,

  561. Abba, Father.

  562. Now, I want to close

  563. talking about

  564. one final thing

  565. and that is that

  566. God's spirit

  567. not only gives you

  568. a stable identity

  569. and a vital relationship

  570. but he also

  571. gives us a future hope.

  572. He gives us a future hope.

  573. You're probably aware

  574. that there's an increasing

  575. number of people

  576. in our society

  577. who are filled

  578. with despair.

  579. Right?

  580. They look at the future

  581. and the future

  582. is utterly bleak

  583. and hopeless.

  584. And on the one hand,

  585. that's a bad thing.

  586. It's not good

  587. to live in a society

  588. that's so charged

  589. with pessimism

  590. and nihilism

  591. and doom

  592. and gloom.

  593. But of course,

  594. on the other hand,

  595. this is often

  596. what's required

  597. to come

  598. to the end

  599. of ourselves

  600. and the end

  601. of our schemes.

  602. Right?

  603. And to begin

  604. to look beyond

  605. this material world

  606. to a hope

  607. above and beyond

  608. this world

  609. and this life.

  610. And that's what

  611. Paul is getting at

  612. in verse 17.

  613. He says,

  614. Now if we are children,

  615. then we are heirs,

  616. heirs of God

  617. and co-heirs with Christ,

  618. if indeed we share

  619. in his sufferings

  620. in order that we may

  621. also share

  622. in his glory.

  623. Many people

  624. have been writing today

  625. about the great

  626. wealth transfer.

  627. Have you read

  628. about the great

  629. wealth transfer?

  630. The silent

  631. and boomer

  632. generations

  633. are going to

  634. bequest a total

  635. of $84.4 trillion

  636. in assets

  637. through 2045.

  638. And $72.6 trillion

  639. is going to go

  640. directly to their heirs.

  641. Right?

  642. And so,

  643. maybe a few of you

  644. are going to be

  645. so blessed

  646. to be heirs

  647. to inherit

  648. a bit of that windfall.

  649. So I hope you'll

  650. invite me to dinner.

  651. But let's assume

  652. that you are set

  653. to receive $0

  654. of that great

  655. wealth transfer.

  656. The good news

  657. for you

  658. this morning

  659. is that if you're

  660. in Jesus Christ

  661. and if you're led

  662. by the Holy Spirit

  663. and God

  664. is your Abba Father,

  665. then you are

  666. the heir

  667. of an inheritance

  668. that's beyond

  669. your wildest

  670. imagination.

  671. This great

  672. wealth transfer

  673. that's going to happen

  674. is just pennies

  675. in comparison

  676. with what you're

  677. going to get.

  678. And what does

  679. the Apostle Paul mean

  680. when he says

  681. we are heirs of God

  682. and we're going to

  683. share in the glory

  684. of Jesus Christ?

  685. If you go back

  686. to verse 11,

  687. he says,

  688. if the spirit of him

  689. who raised Jesus

  690. from the dead

  691. is living in you,

  692. he who raised Christ

  693. from the dead

  694. will also give life

  695. to your mortal bodies

  696. because of his spirit

  697. who lives in you.

  698. This means that

  699. Christ's resurrection

  700. is the pledge

  701. and pattern

  702. of our coming

  703. resurrection.

  704. That the same spirit

  705. who raised Jesus

  706. from the dead

  707. will also raise us.

  708. And the same spirit

  709. who's already given life

  710. to our spirits

  711. will also give life

  712. to our bodies.

  713. And that does not mean

  714. that our dead bodies

  715. will be revivified

  716. and resuscitated

  717. so that we're restored

  718. to the present

  719. material existence

  720. that we have

  721. only to die again

  722. which would be a complete

  723. and total bummer.

  724. No, Jesus was raised

  725. in such a way

  726. that he can never die again.

  727. And if you're in Jesus Christ,

  728. your future hope,

  729. your coming inheritance

  730. is that you are going

  731. to be raised up

  732. with a new body.

  733. And your body

  734. is going to be transformed

  735. into this glorious,

  736. powerful,

  737. spiritual,

  738. imperishable,

  739. immortal body

  740. like the body

  741. of Jesus.

  742. You're going to be liberated

  743. from all the vestiges

  744. of sin

  745. and frailty

  746. and disease

  747. and pain

  748. and decay

  749. and death.

  750. And this is why

  751. Christians are people

  752. who are eagerly

  753. and fearlessly

  754. awaiting this future hope

  755. as we endure

  756. this world

  757. and this life

  758. that's marked by death.

  759. But that's only one aspect

  760. of our future hope.

  761. Paul says in verse 17,

  762. he says,

  763. now if we are children

  764. then we are heirs,

  765. heirs of God

  766. and co-heirs

  767. with Christ.

  768. What are we set

  769. to inherit?

  770. Well,

  771. as I close,

  772. Jesus,

  773. when he was talking

  774. with his disciples

  775. on the night

  776. before he was

  777. to be crucified,

  778. he told them a parable

  779. just before the last supper

  780. and he ended that parable

  781. saying this,

  782. he said,

  783. then the king will say

  784. to those on his right,

  785. come you who are blessed

  786. by my father,

  787. take your inheritance,

  788. the kingdom prepared for you

  789. since the creation

  790. of the world.

  791. Your inheritance

  792. is an entire kingdom.

  793. He said to them

  794. at the end

  795. of that last supper,

  796. he said,

  797. I confer on you

  798. a kingdom

  799. just as my father

  800. conferred one on me

  801. so that you may

  802. eat and drink

  803. at my table

  804. in my kingdom

  805. and sit on thrones.

  806. So you not only

  807. have a kingdom

  808. but you have the table

  809. of the king

  810. and you have the throne

  811. of the king.

  812. And then after that supper

  813. Jesus said to them

  814. additionally,

  815. he said,

  816. my father's house

  817. has many rooms

  818. and I am going there

  819. to prepare a place

  820. for you

  821. and if I go

  822. and prepare a place

  823. for you,

  824. I will come back

  825. and take you

  826. to be with me

  827. that you also may be

  828. where I am.

  829. And that is so crucial

  830. for us to hear

  831. because Jesus is telling us there

  832. that I want you

  833. to be with me

  834. that you might be

  835. where I am.

  836. Your inheritance

  837. is not necessarily

  838. a something.

  839. Your inheritance

  840. is a someone.

  841. You're not just set

  842. to receive

  843. a resurrection body

  844. and a kingdom

  845. and a table

  846. of the king

  847. and a throne

  848. with the king.

  849. You're going to get

  850. all those things

  851. but what you're set

  852. to receive

  853. is the king himself.

  854. The triune God

  855. infinite

  856. and eternal

  857. and all of his glory

  858. and power

  859. all of his excellencies

  860. and all of his strength

  861. and all of his life

  862. and all of his goodness

  863. that is what you

  864. the heirs of God

  865. and co-heirs with Christ

  866. are set to inherit.

  867. And so my friends

  868. we who are filled

  869. with the spirit of God

  870. we who cry out to him

  871. Abba Father

  872. we who know Jesus

  873. as our king

  874. we have no right

  875. to despair.

  876. We have no right

  877. to be people

  878. who are just utterly sad.

  879. God

  880. we are called

  881. to be a people

  882. of joy

  883. and a people

  884. of hope

  885. in the midst

  886. of this world

  887. that's despairing daily.

  888. So may God

  889. empower us

  890. to be that.

  891. May God empower us

  892. to do that.

  893. That this future hope

  894. would outweigh

  895. all the current

  896. sufferings

  897. that we currently

  898. share with Christ

  899. because it says

  900. we are going to share

  901. in his glory.

  902. In the name of the Father,

  903. Son, and Holy Spirit.

  904. Amen.

  905. Amen.

  906. Thank you.
